- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, a WAVE original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:23Speaker 1: have a guest join us, an old friend that I
- 0:25Speaker 1: realized I ain't called him long enough because he used
- 0:27Speaker 1: to be so busy. He'd be hollering at us from
- 0:30Speaker 1: the car, driving people around in the morning and everything.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Live from San Antonio, Bruce Bowen, what's going on, man?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Bomani, it's good to be here, my man.
- 0:38Speaker 3: You threw out something there, you know, live, driving the
- 0:41Speaker 3: kids around.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I didn't say kids. I didn't say kids. I just
- 0:45Speaker 1: said driving.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Oh, okay. My bad.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Because it seems like in retirement, that's all I do.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I drive my kids to tournaments. I mean, they sit
- 0:56Speaker 3: in the back seat like I'm their chauffeur.
- 0:59Speaker 2: So... I'd have to get that off my chest.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's so funny you mentioned that, though. I was staying
- 1:06Speaker 1: at a hotel in Houston because I did the commencement address.
- 1:09Speaker 1: at Prairie View, and as I'm walking out, who do
- 1:12Speaker 1: I see pulling up in the Navigator? Gerald McCoy. Why?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Driving his kids to a tournament.
- 1:18Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Like, every time I feel like if I see an athlete, like,
- 1:22Speaker 1: in the wild, in the natural world, y'all got them
- 1:25Speaker 1: kids in the back going to some game.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Now, I'll say this.
- 1:31Speaker 3: It's impressive to see the amount of NBA kids that
- 1:34Speaker 3: play in these summer leagues and these different circuits. It's
- 1:38Speaker 3: impressive from the standpoint that, Bomana, you're a Californian.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I'm a Californian.
- 1:44Speaker 3: When we were coming up, or I should say when
- 1:46Speaker 3: I was coming up, we would go from Fresno to L.A.
- 1:50Speaker 3: for the weekend to play in Slammin' Jam. This guy
- 1:54Speaker 3: by the name of Izzy Washington ran this program. And
- 1:57Speaker 3: you would find so many individuals. But you didn't have
- 2:01Speaker 3: middle schoolers or elementary kids playing. Now you got this.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It's ridiculous.
- 2:07Speaker 3: I mean, these kids are saying, I want to be
- 2:08Speaker 3: an NBA player. I didn't think that when I was
- 2:11Speaker 3: seven years old or 18.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Years old, it just didn't happen.
- 2:16Speaker 3: But it's a great outlet for kids and we support
- 2:19Speaker 3: our kids in any way, shape or form we can.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Now, see, I'm a Texas guy. And the way the
- 2:23Speaker 1: kids got down on that was just running, hit each
- 2:26Speaker 1: other in the backyard. You know what I'm saying? Just
- 2:28Speaker 1: playing unsanctioned football. But everybody I know, man, all y'all
- 2:32Speaker 1: with these kids and y'all taking them out all weekend
- 2:35Speaker 1: doing all of this. And I feel like explaining to people.
- 2:38Speaker 1: It's still only 30 teams. It's all these kids doing
- 2:41Speaker 1: more and more. It's still only 30 teams in the league. Now, look,
- 2:46Speaker 1: it's a big old world. And this college money is
- 2:48Speaker 1: about to completely change the game where, look, you come
- 2:51Speaker 1: out of college and you made $ 8 million or something
- 2:54Speaker 1: like that while you were in school. You're not set
- 2:55Speaker 1: for life, but you shouldn't have to worry if you
- 2:58Speaker 1: play this right.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You know, and this is where parenting comes into play.
- 3:03Speaker 3: You know, your kid go to college for three years
- 3:05Speaker 3: and they come out with $ 6 million. there's they shouldn't
- 3:09Speaker 3: be going into the NBA saying, oh, I'm struggling. I
- 3:12Speaker 3: got to take care of my family. No, that should
- 3:14Speaker 3: be that should be one of their goals of, hey,
- 3:18Speaker 3: I've always wanted to play in the NBA. But it
- 3:20Speaker 3: is really something to see where the game's evolved in.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And it also makes you kind of look at it
- 3:26Speaker 3: from another perspective to Bomani as far as, OK, if
- 3:31Speaker 3: my kid is 22 years old and he has eight
- 3:35Speaker 3: million dollars, What are the chances that he's going to
- 3:40Speaker 3: turn that into 16 million by the time he's 30, 35?
- 3:44Speaker 3: You know, I think it kind of takes away that
- 3:47Speaker 3: drive to learn and to want to earn when you're
- 3:52Speaker 3: giving things quite like that without necessarily working for it.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I was having a conversation with a buddy of mine yesterday,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and he's got a son that's a high-level player that's
- 4:02Speaker 1: looking like he'll be able, if nothing else, to make
- 4:04Speaker 1: a lot of money in college. And again, good for
- 4:06Speaker 1: them because they was getting work for so long. So
- 4:09Speaker 1: being able to say that you can get that money
- 4:11Speaker 1: in college, I'm happy for him. money has never made
- 4:17Speaker 1: a teenager a likable person. It has not happened one time, right?
- 4:21Speaker 1: This is where this is all going to get a
- 4:23Speaker 1: little bit weird because the parenting game, and it's interesting
- 4:26Speaker 1: because the level of helicopter parenting that we see with people,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and I want to see how many people figure out,
- 4:30Speaker 1: you need to set it to where them kids ain't
- 4:34Speaker 1: struggling in college, not hurting in college, but they ain't
- 4:37Speaker 1: got to be walking around in college with no $ 100, 000
- 4:39Speaker 1: chain because ultimately you're going to have to have something
- 4:41Speaker 1: in life to look forward to. If it is better
- 4:43Speaker 1: for you at this point in life than it ever is,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and I know you know those guys who lived good
- 4:48Speaker 1: while they was in the league and how hard it
- 4:49Speaker 1: is now if they ain't got that money no more
- 4:51Speaker 1: because what is there to look forward to? You have
- 4:54Speaker 1: nothing left to look forward to. You did it all
- 4:56Speaker 1: that fast.
- 4:57Speaker 3: My thoughts on it Bomani is that, okay, after basketball,
- 5:00Speaker 3: then what? If you didn't take college seriously, if you
- 5:03Speaker 3: didn't get out of there with a degree, because the
- 5:07Speaker 3: degree for me was always after basketball. I was fortunate
- 5:11Speaker 3: to do what I did, but I knew that I
- 5:13Speaker 3: would need to rely on something afterwards because I'm not
- 5:16Speaker 3: going to be able to do that forever.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And there's a lot of guys that are thinking.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Like, oh, I'll just do a podcast like Bomani Jones.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I can do what he does. Really?
- 5:25Speaker 1: Really?
- 5:26Speaker 2: I mean, it's competitive out there.
- 5:28Speaker 3: And so what are you going to study where you
- 5:31Speaker 3: can necessarily go in that field? And you talked about
- 5:35Speaker 3: walking around with a $ 100, 000 chain. What about the cars?
- 5:38Speaker 3: What about the place of residence? What about how they
- 5:42Speaker 3: look at a dorm room or an apartment now? Those
- 5:45Speaker 3: are all, I believe, those are part of the journey
- 5:49Speaker 3: of where you're going. So you start small and you
- 5:52Speaker 3: end up big. But if you start big, what do
- 5:54Speaker 3: you go to from that?
- 5:56Speaker 1: It's the toughest thing like this. It's going to be
- 5:58Speaker 1: interesting watching all of this get navigated. It's somebody who
- 6:02Speaker 1: advocated strongly for a very long time for this day
- 6:05Speaker 1: to come. Right. It's like good for all of you.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But man, I hope you put some if you put
- 6:11Speaker 1: this bread away, you go wind up in so much
- 6:14Speaker 1: of a better position and situation. I'm going to tell
- 6:17Speaker 1: you this, too. Not that them college boys got money.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It's a whole different game of shark that's coming at them.
- 6:22Speaker 1: It's sharks coming at them in high school to get
- 6:25Speaker 1: their hands on their financial, you know, financial management type
- 6:28Speaker 1: stuff and everything else. And then if we be a
- 6:31Speaker 1: real man, there's sharks that be waiting in the tunnel
- 6:34Speaker 1: in the NBA are now going to be on campus.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Not even on campus. They're at the AU level, baby.
- 6:42Speaker 3: And this is where, unfortunately, you had parents. that were
- 6:47Speaker 3: pimping their kids to be able to get this bread.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Now you look at the dichotomy of a family situation
- 6:56Speaker 3: because whenever an athlete feels like they've been taken advantage of,
- 7:00Speaker 3: not just by somebody from outside, but from family, it
- 7:04Speaker 3: creates a whole nother level of distrust and it creates
- 7:07Speaker 3: a level of separate, people separating themselves from their families.
- 7:13Speaker 3: So what was looked at as a great opportunity Now
- 7:16Speaker 3: they're going to, you know, and it just came to
- 7:19Speaker 3: me right now, Beasley. Michael Beasley has been through a
- 7:22Speaker 3: lot of things.
- 7:23Speaker 2: That we have seen for ages.
- 7:27Speaker 3: He has been, I think, strong and brave enough to
- 7:32Speaker 3: put it out there because I remember his situations. I
- 7:36Speaker 3: remember him being a go-to guy in Phoenix and then
- 7:40Speaker 3: wanted to change his world and all the things he
- 7:43Speaker 3: had coming at him. We're talking about Michael Beasley, who
- 7:46Speaker 3: could handle his business on the basketball court. But you
- 7:49Speaker 3: look at him now, you look at the things that
- 7:51Speaker 3: he's had to go through, that's unfortunate. And I don't
- 7:54Speaker 3: wish that on anyone, but that's what we bring into effect,
- 7:59Speaker 3: all this money now. And what about this, Romani? How
- 8:02Speaker 3: about figuring out something where they can get their money
- 8:05Speaker 3: later in life? Once you hit 30, you get a
- 8:08Speaker 3: certain amount of that money that you got early on.
- 8:11Speaker 3: And I know that this is something that they'd have
- 8:13Speaker 3: to do with them their circle of trust. But I
- 8:16Speaker 3: just think that you give kids too much money early on,
- 8:19Speaker 3: it's nothing positive after that.
- 8:21Speaker 1: The one thing I do think, though, where Michael Beasley
- 8:24Speaker 1: is an interesting case, and I think most of the
- 8:26Speaker 1: people who listen to this podcast are old enough to
- 8:29Speaker 1: have remembered seeing Michael Beasley at Kansas State. But if
- 8:33Speaker 1: you did not. Woo! Woo!
- 8:38Speaker 2: You know, it was so easy for him.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I mean, it was it was just there are people
- 8:46Speaker 3: that you look that I looked at when I got
- 8:48Speaker 3: to the NBA.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I was like, dang, if he didn't have basketball, I
- 8:52Speaker 2: don't know what he would have. Yeah. He's one of them.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Antoine Walker.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I mean, the easiness with what they did and how
- 9:00Speaker 3: they did things, man. You know, I just think that
- 9:04Speaker 3: so many times we don't see that in individuals. And
- 9:08Speaker 3: I'm going to go one more. Rudy Gay, the way
- 9:11Speaker 3: that Rudy played, you were just like, man. Is it
- 9:14Speaker 3: difficult for you? You were born a basketball player.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 1: The thing I wonder, though, about Beasley, I remember that
- 9:21Speaker 1: year that Beasley was at Kansas State. I want to
- 9:24Speaker 1: say Dana O'Neill wrote this profile of him for ESPN
- 9:28Speaker 1: and it was really long and it was really good.
- 9:30Speaker 1: But the quotes from Michael Beasley screamed out. I don't
- 9:35Speaker 1: want to leave school. I'm not quite ready for the world.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I would like to stay here and keep having fun.
- 9:42Speaker 1: But obviously the money that was on the other side
- 9:45Speaker 1: was too much. Do you know how badly somebody is
- 9:48Speaker 1: saying that they want to stay somewhere? If they want
- 9:50Speaker 1: to stay in Manhattan, Kansas, like you realize what, like
- 9:52Speaker 1: with somebody, if they cry for help is I want
- 9:54Speaker 1: to stay here and stay there. But I wonder for
- 9:56Speaker 1: a guy like that, if he can get that bread
- 10:00Speaker 1: in college then maybe you don't feel like you got
- 10:04Speaker 1: to go to the league at 19 years old maybe
- 10:06Speaker 1: you can take that time in college and grow up
- 10:09Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I think it was what college life gave him it
- 10:14Speaker 3: was secluded it was secluded He didn't have to worry
- 10:17Speaker 3: about them streets. He didn't have to worry about folks
- 10:20Speaker 3: coming at him left or right. He was able to
- 10:22Speaker 3: just be happy and play basketball as he did in
- 10:25Speaker 3: his early youth. So those are also some of the
- 10:28Speaker 3: things that scream out during that time, because, you know,
- 10:32Speaker 3: it's something else, Bomani. Like when guys realize those that
- 10:36Speaker 3: you were close to, their hands are out or their
- 10:40Speaker 3: hands were in your pockets and it was unbeknownst to you.
- 10:43Speaker 3: That's that's a that's a. That's a situation that I've seen,
- 10:50Speaker 3: I've been in, and it really breaks the trust to
- 10:53Speaker 3: another level.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Listen to this quote from that article I was just
- 10:56Speaker 1: talking about from Beasley. And this is Michael Beasley at,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I want to say, 20 years old, 19 or 20.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm still a kid. I'm still irresponsible. And I want
- 11:05Speaker 1: to still be irresponsible sometimes. When I go to the NBA,
- 11:08Speaker 1: that's over. My life is America's life. LeBron James gets
- 11:12Speaker 1: a speeding ticket, the cop goes on with his day,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and LeBron is all over SportsCenter. Britney Spears shaves her head,
- 11:17Speaker 1: it's everywhere. You shave your hair, who cares? That's why
- 11:21Speaker 1: I'm not sure I'm ready for the NBA. Yo, he
- 11:24Speaker 1: was telling you, and that first year for him in
- 11:27Speaker 1: Miami was like, oh, him, Pat Riley has taken him, right?
- 11:33Speaker 1: And all the way to the end, Pat Riley told people,
- 11:35Speaker 1: that someday that boy's going to figure it out and
- 11:38Speaker 1: everybody's going to pay for it. He was so good
- 11:41Speaker 1: that everybody had to try, but it was just a
- 11:43Speaker 1: little bit more than he could handle.
- 11:46Speaker 3: And unfortunately, when you don't have that, what you said
- 11:49Speaker 3: in the beginning, that support system, that support system that
- 11:52Speaker 3: allows you to receive those nuggets from a Hall of
- 11:55Speaker 3: Fame coach and individual like Pat Riley, if he sees
- 12:00Speaker 3: something in you, you got to remember, this is the
- 12:02Speaker 3: same man that had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar This is the same
- 12:05Speaker 3: man who had Magic Johnson. This is the same guy
- 12:09Speaker 3: who had LeBron James and Dwayne Wade at one time.
- 12:12Speaker 3: So when you hear those things coming from someone quite
- 12:15Speaker 3: like that, you have to take into account of what's
- 12:18Speaker 3: being said and how good this individual is.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Last thing I will also say is I can't
- 12:24Speaker 1: think of a worse idea than sending that boy to
- 12:27Speaker 1: Miami to get it started.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I concur.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I was about to say, you had your run as
- 12:36Speaker 1: a youngster in Miami, you know what I'm saying?
- 12:38Speaker 3: But you know what, Bomani, I was not... So let's
- 12:41Speaker 3: take that into account. My time in Miami compared to
- 12:45Speaker 3: his early days in Miami. People don't know me. People
- 12:50Speaker 3: don't know me as a player of the year in college.
- 12:53Speaker 3: People don't know me as any of those things. He
- 12:56Speaker 3: came out with, you know... The dollar signs was on
- 13:02Speaker 3: his shoulders when he was coming out. Whereas I walk
- 13:06Speaker 3: into a place, they're like, oh, Mina, que grande tu eres.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And that was it.
- 13:14Speaker 2: So, you know, when someone did ask me what I did, no,
- 13:17Speaker 2: I played basketball. Oh yeah, for who? Oh, Miami Heat.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Like, oh, we got a team, huh? That's what's up.
- 13:27Speaker 1: That's what's up. But, yo, let me ask you, before
- 13:29Speaker 1: we go too far on this, man, you have to
- 13:32Speaker 1: love the Thunder. Like, I watched them play defense, and
- 13:35Speaker 1: I just think to myself, that's a team that Bruce
- 13:37Speaker 1: Bowen would love to play.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Oh, you know.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Let's take this into account. You look at each series
- 13:44Speaker 3: they've been in and what they've done to the opponents,
- 13:48Speaker 3: from a defensive standpoint, just that alone, they're number one
- 13:51Speaker 3: in defense this whole year during the season. And they
- 13:55Speaker 3: take pride in it. They understand that when things aren't
- 13:59Speaker 3: going well, it's not about our offense. Nine times out
- 14:03Speaker 3: of 10, it's the defense that has not been felt
- 14:07Speaker 3: for your opponent.
- 14:08Speaker 2: And I just love it, man.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I think about this where People talk about, oh, and
- 14:15Speaker 3: he struggled.
- 14:16Speaker 2: He did this, he did that.
- 14:19Speaker 3: The struggle was the fact that he always had somebody
- 14:22Speaker 3: on him when he was coming off a pick and roll.
- 14:24Speaker 2: That was the struggle.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Not going under, they were wedging themselves between the screener
- 14:30Speaker 3: and him and being physical. That's what I love about
- 14:35Speaker 3: that series concerning Minnesota.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Let's talk about Denver.
- 14:41Speaker 3: MVP got a team that is doing bigger and better things.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Man, look here.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Yes, Jokic looked good for half the time, but the
- 14:52Speaker 3: other half of the time, he was laboring because of
- 14:55Speaker 3: the physicality of the game.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Now, people talk about, oh, you know, they're being too physical.
- 15:01Speaker 3: No, this is basketball. We're talking about the best players
- 15:04Speaker 3: in the world. We don't want to give touch fouls.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Let's see how good they really are being able to
- 15:09Speaker 3: create for themselves and deal with the physicality of the game.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Shea Gilchrist, I mean, I watch him initiate contact quite
- 15:19Speaker 3: like Anthony Edwards initiated contact in his one-on-one moves. But
- 15:25Speaker 3: it's just impressive for him that he gets just enough
- 15:29Speaker 3: separation to go ahead and do what's necessary. And I
- 15:32Speaker 3: haven't spoken about Williams yet because I figure we're going
- 15:35Speaker 3: to have a lot of time to talk about how
- 15:37Speaker 3: special he is.
- 15:39Speaker 1: So actually, I kind of want to start there because
- 15:41Speaker 1: we're talking now coming off of Game 5 with the
- 15:44Speaker 1: Thunder up 3-2 and Jalen Williams scored 40 points in
- 15:49Speaker 1: Game 5. And look, I realize... I believe that there's
- 15:53Speaker 1: a world where there's two kinds of people, people who
- 15:55Speaker 1: think Scottie Pippen is overrated, people who think Scottie Pippen
- 15:57Speaker 1: is underrated. There is no in-between. But after he put
- 16:00Speaker 1: up 40 points and people were then making the Scottie
- 16:02Speaker 1: Pippen comparison, I'm like, no, no, no, no, no. Scottie
- 16:06Speaker 1: ain't giving you 40 in that game.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Scottie wasn't that.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Scottie couldn't initiate the offense and still be an offensive threat.
- 16:17Speaker 3: The beauty about it, and I was thinking about this,
- 16:19Speaker 3: knowing that I was going to be on your show,
- 16:22Speaker 3: thinking about two types of scores that you need on
- 16:27Speaker 3: the floor and also someone else who can benefit from
- 16:30Speaker 3: those scores. And you look at Gilchrist and Williams, they're
- 16:34Speaker 3: two different type of scores.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Both can get downhill. One's a little bigger in Williams.
- 16:40Speaker 2: But the fact that he is bigger, he doesn't settle
- 16:44Speaker 2: for the jump shots.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And I love that they get them moving instead of
- 16:48Speaker 3: an ISO post-up. So you look at his points in
- 16:53Speaker 3: the paint last night.
- 16:55Speaker 2: That's the part that.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Really demoralizes a team because someone just keeps coming that's
- 17:02Speaker 3: what we remember about kobe with shat he kept on
- 17:06Speaker 3: putting pressure on the defense getting in the paint it
- 17:09Speaker 3: wasn't about settling for jump shots it was about getting
- 17:13Speaker 3: to a point where now when you do take that
- 17:15Speaker 3: jump shot you have so much space but i.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Love what williams was able to do in addition to
- 17:21Speaker 2: you never saw williams looking at Gilchrist kind of like, no, no, no,
- 17:27Speaker 2: it's my turn. It's my turn. No, he knows that's
- 17:30Speaker 2: the MVP.
- 17:31Speaker 3: So when they did their screen and roll, it was
- 17:35Speaker 3: more about, okay, I've taken the burden off of Shea
- 17:39Speaker 3: because I've been able to.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Do these things.
- 17:42Speaker 3: So now let me go ahead and get it to
- 17:43Speaker 3: him because the team, or I should say the defense,
- 17:46Speaker 3: is preoccupied with what I'm doing because of the attacking.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I feel like I saw... both of those guys make
- 17:53Speaker 1: like a graduation type step in this postseason. Because I
- 17:56Speaker 1: had questions about, in spite of how good Shea Gilgis was,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and he won the MVP, obviously, and didn't, it wasn't like,
- 18:03Speaker 1: if he, I thought Jokic was the MVP, but it's
- 18:06Speaker 1: not a, I'm mad this other guy won it. You
- 18:08Speaker 1: know what I mean? Like he was, he was right
- 18:10Speaker 1: there in the same space. And with Williams, my question was, okay,
- 18:13Speaker 1: are we really talking about a number two? Though what
- 18:15Speaker 1: it means to be a championship number two is different
- 18:17Speaker 1: in this era of parity, right? but did I think
- 18:20Speaker 1: given what I had seen earlier in this postseason that
- 18:23Speaker 1: Jalen Williams could give you 40 in the must win
- 18:25Speaker 1: game five no I didn't did I think that Shea
- 18:28Speaker 1: could be the guy to will like get that 15
- 18:31Speaker 1: in the last five minutes not because he was just
- 18:33Speaker 1: hot but because he was going and getting it did
- 18:35Speaker 1: I think he could do those things no now that
- 18:38Speaker 1: I have seen these things oh oh oh like I
- 18:43Speaker 1: I didn't think he couldn't do it.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But it was over.
- 18:46Speaker 2: You didn't think he could, though.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, you think about it. This team is
- 18:49Speaker 1: only in the playoffs for the second year. That's it.
- 18:52Speaker 3: So let me share something with you about Sam Presi.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Sam has developed a great environment there where all the
- 19:00Speaker 3: players want to do is become better. And they have
- 19:04Speaker 3: the opportunity to do that there. I know it sounds minimal, but.
- 19:07Speaker 3: It's not a lot of distractions in OKC. If you
- 19:10Speaker 3: truly love the game of basketball, you'll be in the
- 19:12Speaker 3: gym working on your game, a la Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook,
- 19:18Speaker 3: James Harden.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Hold on, hold on, hold on. And which one of
- 19:21Speaker 1: them needed to get out of there?
- 19:24Speaker 2: Come on now.
- 19:26Speaker 3: And the one that needed to get out, it was
- 19:29Speaker 3: contractual things early on with James, you know.
- 19:33Speaker 2: But once he got out, he was like, my eyes.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Have seen the glory of what adult establishments are.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Right there.
- 19:44Speaker 3: But they've been able to create that environment there, you know,
- 19:51Speaker 3: and when you have kids today because you have a
- 19:54Speaker 3: lot of players today who love the game and they
- 19:57Speaker 3: just want to be in the gym i remember when
- 20:00Speaker 3: victor oladipo was drafted to orlando Jack had to send him,
- 20:04Speaker 3: Jack Vaughn at the time was the.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Coach, he had to send him out of the gym
- 20:07Speaker 2: because he'd.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Stay in the gym. You had gym rats. And there
- 20:11Speaker 3: was a time where guys would work out for a while,
- 20:14Speaker 3: but then it was like, hey, what are we doing tonight?
- 20:17Speaker 3: You see kind of the effect and impact of what
- 20:21Speaker 3: Kobe was. You see the impact of what MJ was
- 20:28Speaker 3: as far as, hey, man, you got to get better.
- 20:30Speaker 3: How do you get better? You put time in on
- 20:32Speaker 3: your game. And so for me, I see what they're
- 20:36Speaker 3: doing in that culture because if it's truly about basketball,
- 20:41Speaker 3: then this is your Madison Square Garden.
- 20:45Speaker 2: You can become any and everything that you want here.
- 20:49Speaker 3: We've seen others that's done it, and it's no coincidence
- 20:52Speaker 3: that you've had three MVPs to come out of there
- 20:55Speaker 3: as far as Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, and Gilchrist.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I was talking about the Desmond Bay trade on Monday,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and I still don't know if that's a guy you
- 21:06Speaker 1: give up four first-round picks for. I don't care. You
- 21:08Speaker 1: can explain all the nuances and all of that stuff,
- 21:11Speaker 1: you know what I mean? But I'm still not sure
- 21:13Speaker 1: that's what you do. But the point that I made
- 21:16Speaker 1: was I don't know if Orlando– I'm not as wild
- 21:20Speaker 1: about Paolo as other people. I think Wagner is good,
- 21:23Speaker 1: but I don't feel like they have like that frontline guy.
- 21:25Speaker 1: But what they put together is a collection of pretty
- 21:27Speaker 1: good players. Right. Low space. I think Paolo is better
- 21:30Speaker 1: than pretty good. But, you know, I don't see that
- 21:32Speaker 1: that that top top guy, except in this new NBA.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I don't know how important that is because of the
- 21:38Speaker 1: level of parity that's across the league, except Oklahoma City
- 21:42Speaker 1: does have that top line guy. And it looks like
- 21:44Speaker 1: they might have that classic number two guy. And then
- 21:48Speaker 1: we start talking about Chet and they got all the
- 21:52Speaker 1: first round picks and they got a deep team with
- 21:55Speaker 1: a bunch of guys who just do stuff. This could
- 21:57Speaker 1: be terrifying for a long time. Like, I don't want
- 22:00Speaker 1: to act like these finals are over, but even if
- 22:02Speaker 1: they not over next year, I know who I think
- 22:05Speaker 1: go win the championship.
- 22:08Speaker 3: So yeah, Again, I was going into something about having
- 22:12Speaker 3: two dynamic scores on your team.
- 22:14Speaker 2: We saw it in Shaq and Kobe.
- 22:16Speaker 3: You saw it where Shaq was the most dominant person
- 22:21Speaker 3: that he can get the ball inside to him. And
- 22:24Speaker 3: you had Kobe that was able to do things. But
- 22:27Speaker 3: it was their system that allowed just two guys to
- 22:30Speaker 3: be the dominant forces. But you also had guys that
- 22:33Speaker 3: could knock down three point shot, as you see with OKC.
- 22:38Speaker 3: I have to say this. When you think about the
- 22:41Speaker 3: dynamics of what's going on in OKC, it's kind of
- 22:45Speaker 3: a la San Antonio. When you have Tony who can
- 22:49Speaker 3: get downhill, you have Manu who can get downhill.
- 22:52Speaker 2: They get downhill in different types of ways, but they
- 22:56Speaker 2: continue to keep the pressure on the defense. Then when
- 23:00Speaker 2: it gets to San too consuming, you can dump it
- 23:03Speaker 2: to TD on the block and he can be that
- 23:06Speaker 2: force there as well. So when you look at OKC,
- 23:09Speaker 2: I see a lot of the similarities.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Chet Holmgren right now, he's doing his part, but he's
- 23:17Speaker 3: not required to try to be something else.
- 23:20Speaker 2: He is interesting.
- 23:22Speaker 3: I thought he was going to have a career night
- 23:23Speaker 3: in Indy the other night when he had 15, I
- 23:25Speaker 3: think it was, in the first quarter or the first half.
- 23:28Speaker 3: And then it kind of went silent. But he gave
- 23:31Speaker 3: you something then. And what happens with that is as
- 23:34Speaker 3: he continues to mature, he's going to find other ways
- 23:37Speaker 3: to get involved as well. You were saying that not
- 23:42Speaker 3: no matter what happens now, but looking at OKC's team,
- 23:45Speaker 3: the only thing that will hold.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Them back, Bomani, is when someone, if someone decides, yeah,
- 23:56Speaker 2: I've had enough of this. I want to go be
- 23:58Speaker 2: the guy.
- 24:01Speaker 1: But then they got 13 first-round picks in the next
- 24:05Speaker 1: six years.
- 24:10Speaker 3: And, again, I credit Sam. Sam Pressey. You know, I
- 24:15Speaker 3: saw him in a clip yesterday when it was either
- 24:19Speaker 3: out of bounds or something, but I saw him. He
- 24:21Speaker 3: looked like he was ready to run on the floor.
- 24:23Speaker 3: I remember Sam when he was in his infant stages
- 24:26Speaker 3: here in San Antonio playing And I'm just proud of
- 24:29Speaker 3: what he's been able to do there. But again, you
- 24:32Speaker 3: look at what they have going on. They keep it simple, man.
- 24:36Speaker 3: They keep it simple. Kids come in there to work,
- 24:39Speaker 3: but they understand how important the defensive side is.
- 24:42Speaker 2: And, you know, quiet is kept.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Indiana, for East Coast team, they're doing it really good
- 24:51Speaker 3: on the defensive side as well.
- 24:52Speaker 2: They're making them feel.
- 24:54Speaker 3: I felt like they had a chance last night.
- 24:57Speaker 2: But I think they cut it to four or six.
- 25:02Speaker 3: And you saw OKC settling for a couple of jump
- 25:06Speaker 3: shots and maybe shouldn't or trying to force the issue
- 25:10Speaker 3: and having turnovers. But then they got back to that
- 25:12Speaker 3: ball movement, body movement, and it was all she wrote.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw Sam at Summer League, I want to
- 25:19Speaker 1: say in 21. And he was like, you know, I
- 25:25Speaker 1: pushed back against the allegations that they were tanking. I
- 25:28Speaker 1: thought they were going young. And that's not necessarily the
- 25:31Speaker 1: same thing. The process game, they were intentionally trying to
- 25:34Speaker 1: be as terrible as possible. That was not the same
- 25:37Speaker 1: thing that was going on in Oklahoma City. And Sam
- 25:39Speaker 1: was like, you know, I can explain what's going on.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I'm like, dude, you don't have to explain nothing to me.
- 25:42Speaker 1: It's very simple. You got a place where you got
- 25:46Speaker 1: to draft the guys and you got to make it
- 25:48Speaker 1: worth it for them to stay. And so you're getting
- 25:50Speaker 1: all the picks you can so that you can increase
- 25:52Speaker 1: the likelihood that you find the guy and show up.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And this is, again, different between Philadelphia because in Philadelphia
- 25:57Speaker 1: they were building losers, right? Oklahoma City was like, we
- 26:01Speaker 1: may be losing games, but we are not building losers.
- 26:05Speaker 2: You know, it's interesting how you worded that. I like that.
- 26:08Speaker 3: You know, you're building, you're also auditioning kids to see
- 26:15Speaker 3: who can handle what.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Do you truly love the game? Do I see fight
- 26:20Speaker 2: in you right now?
- 26:21Speaker 3: Because it's not that you find the fight later on
- 26:24Speaker 3: once you get a couple of pieces. It's It's what
- 26:28Speaker 3: happens in the process of the building up. And then
- 26:31Speaker 3: you go out and you get the big from, shoot,
- 26:35Speaker 3: kid now. Yes, that came from New York.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Yep.
- 26:39Speaker 3: You know, it's interesting how you look at the dynamics,
- 26:43Speaker 3: how things have changed with him on the floor. You know,
- 26:47Speaker 3: I love the fact that people talk about guys can't
- 26:49Speaker 3: do something in the NBA, but yet still they're on
- 26:52Speaker 3: the winning team and they're a great part of that
- 26:54Speaker 3: winning formula. So to all those that hear the naysayers
- 26:59Speaker 3: of what they say, y'all keep doing what you're doing
- 27:01Speaker 3: because it's not about what others think.
- 27:03Speaker 2: It's about what the organization thinks.
- 27:06Speaker 3: But again, these auditions, this is the same, well, kind
- 27:11Speaker 3: of the same scenario when David Robinson was shut down.
- 27:15Speaker 3: At that time, he had a bunch of guys, Courtney Alexander.
- 27:18Speaker 3: He had all these guys in San Antonio that were
- 27:21Speaker 3: getting a lot of minutes. Derek Dial, you know, and
- 27:25Speaker 3: people that, Folks won't know today, but they happened to
- 27:29Speaker 3: get that number one pick and those pieces that play
- 27:32Speaker 3: really well.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Were able to fit right along with those guys.
- 27:36Speaker 1: All right, coming up next, we're going to talk a
- 27:37Speaker 1: little bit about what's going on with the Pacers and
- 27:40Speaker 1: also the possibility that the Spurs might be making a
- 27:43Speaker 1: move to get a certain dude. Talk about that coming

- 30:29Speaker 1: Z-Biotics Pre-Alcohol Probiotic drink is the world's first genetically engineered probiotic.
- 30:34Speaker 1: It was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings
- 30:38Speaker 1: after drinking. Here's how it works. When you drink, alcohol
- 30:42Speaker 1: gets converted into a toxic byproduct in the gut. It's
- 30:45Speaker 1: a buildup of this byproduct, not dehydration, that's to blame
- 30:49Speaker 1: for rough days after drinking. Pre-alcohol produces an enzyme to
- 30:53Speaker 1: break this byproduct down. Just remember to make pre-alcohol your
- 30:57Speaker 1: first drink of the night, drink responsibly, and you'll feel
- 31:00Speaker 1: your best tomorrow. Summer is here, which means more opportunities
- 31:04Speaker 1: to celebrate the warm weather. Before that backyard barbecue, glass
- 31:08Speaker 1: of pinot watching the sunset at the beach, or cocktail
- 31:11Speaker 1: by the campfire, don't forget your Zebiotics pre-alcohol. Drink one
- 31:15Speaker 1: before drinking and wake up feeling great and ready to
- 31:18Speaker 1: take on the world the next day and everything summer

- 31:49Speaker 1: Mental health awareness is growing, but there's still progress to
- 31:53Speaker 1: be made. 26% of Americans who participated in a recent

- 31:59Speaker 1: to fear of judgment. When people hesitate to get help,

- 32:46Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Bruce Bowen coming into
- 32:49Speaker 1: game six for the Pacers. You think they got any chance?
- 32:51Speaker 3: I do think they have a chance. I love what
- 32:54Speaker 3: Carlisle is able to do with this team. And in
- 32:57Speaker 3: this team, you just find that they fight to the end.
- 33:00Speaker 3: They You know, it started, obviously, with the Knicks series
- 33:05Speaker 3: and being down. And you saw in that group, man, like, hey,
- 33:10Speaker 3: we still got a chance.
- 33:11Speaker 2: It's OK.
- 33:12Speaker 3: They extend their defense. And I think that's something that
- 33:15Speaker 3: gives OKC a problem. And thank goodness you have two
- 33:19Speaker 3: ball handlers that can handle the ball and initiate offense
- 33:21Speaker 3: for OKC.
- 33:22Speaker 2: But I love the fact.
- 33:24Speaker 3: That he has these young boys pressing up and really
- 33:29Speaker 3: doing a fantastic job. against some talented individuals. So with Carlisle,
- 33:36Speaker 3: if it wasn't him, I might have a different opinion,
- 33:39Speaker 3: but I still think that this group can still possibly
- 33:45Speaker 3: win the championship. Now, I didn't pick them to win
- 33:48Speaker 3: the championship, but I do feel they can. And obviously
- 33:52Speaker 3: a lot of that depends on Halliburton and how he's playing.
- 33:56Speaker 3: And I was watching him last night and man, So
- 34:00Speaker 3: there's moments where if you're not scoring the ball or
- 34:04Speaker 3: you're not doing something, it impacts all your game and you.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Just look like a slug out there. I'll say this.
- 34:12Speaker 3: He got a little apprehensive on his shot last night,
- 34:15Speaker 3: but I still saw him making plays for others. It
- 34:20Speaker 3: wasn't the so-called, oh, man, my game ain't right and
- 34:24Speaker 3: I'm just over here. No, I still saw him in
- 34:27Speaker 3: a competitive way trying to get things done. But unfortunately
- 34:31Speaker 3: for him, it got a little bit in his head
- 34:34Speaker 3: with his shooting the ball yesterday.
- 34:36Speaker 1: So you think that it was okay to leave him
- 34:38Speaker 1: out there even though he was physically clearly not there?
- 34:42Speaker 3: Well, I think it's okay because he's the leader of
- 34:45Speaker 3: that team. He's one of the leaders. No one else
- 34:47Speaker 3: can do what he does.
- 34:49Speaker 2: And so, you know, it's just.
- 34:51Speaker 3: One of those situations, unfortunately, where The next day, if
- 34:55Speaker 3: he doesn't play and they get smashed, what does that
- 34:58Speaker 3: do to the morale of everyone else then? So you
- 35:01Speaker 3: have to take those things into account. I don't think
- 35:04Speaker 3: this was a situation like a 1997 Pat Riley keeping
- 35:14Speaker 3: guys out.
- 35:15Speaker 2: There too long.
- 35:16Speaker 3: This was just a situation where he's not playing well
- 35:20Speaker 3: and he said he's hobbled a little bit. But he
- 35:22Speaker 3: didn't look bad to me in the second half as
- 35:25Speaker 3: far as his movement. Now, they said something in the
- 35:28Speaker 3: first half, but in the second half, he didn't.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Look as bad. It was just the fact that he
- 35:31Speaker 2: wasn't making shots.
- 35:33Speaker 1: I will say this. I thought early that for the
- 35:37Speaker 1: first time that the fight had been beat out of them.
- 35:42Speaker 1: And that is what has been so impressive about them.
- 35:44Speaker 1: But nope, incorrect. The fight was still there. They still
- 35:48Speaker 1: came and they still brought it. And look, they had
- 35:51Speaker 1: these moments where they seemed to be a bit flustered
- 35:53Speaker 1: in the first half. This wasn't a game where the
- 35:57Speaker 1: Thunder was taking the ball from them. It was where
- 36:00Speaker 1: they were giving the ball away, right? But they pulled
- 36:03Speaker 1: it back together. They got it there. In the second half,
- 36:05Speaker 1: they pulled the lead into two. And that's the part
- 36:08Speaker 1: that gets me. It's just like, I think Oklahoma City
- 36:10Speaker 1: is a better team, but you can't lapse against them.
- 36:15Speaker 1: That's the thing on both sides is you're really going
- 36:17Speaker 1: to need to bring it for 48 because they're going
- 36:19Speaker 1: to be.
- 36:20Speaker 2: On you for 48.
- 36:21Speaker 3: And you look at the bench and the bench production
- 36:25Speaker 3: for Indiana yesterday. That's who led the Cowboys. I believe
- 36:30Speaker 3: it was– Little guard.
- 36:35Speaker 2: McConnell.
- 36:35Speaker 3: McConnell.
- 36:36Speaker 2: McConnell.
- 36:37Speaker 1: McConnell Ladova. McConnell Ladova out there, boy.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Man. And the thing is, they play without fear. And
- 36:45Speaker 2: they're competitive.
- 36:47Speaker 3: You look at and those are the games where coaches
- 36:50Speaker 3: come back and they're talking amongst themselves and they say,
- 36:52Speaker 3: I wish we had more McConnell's out there.
- 36:55Speaker 2: But it wasn't a dog effort from the others. So
- 36:59Speaker 2: you don't say that. You're just happy that you have him.
- 37:01Speaker 2: But that's what I mean, Bomani.
- 37:03Speaker 3: It's like he got going and I think it sends
- 37:07Speaker 3: the message to OKC like, hey, hey, hey, remember, they
- 37:12Speaker 3: beat us game one because we were up. And I
- 37:15Speaker 3: felt like there's moments with OKC that they're looking for
- 37:19Speaker 3: the knockout and the blowout. And that's when you start
- 37:22Speaker 3: settling for some of those jump shots. That's when you
- 37:24Speaker 3: become a little less protective with the basketball or a
- 37:28Speaker 3: little less careless with the basketball. So you see, it's
- 37:33Speaker 3: still interesting how Matham still hasn't had that consistent three-game
- 37:41Speaker 3: stretch for Indiana.
- 37:43Speaker 2: We see he has a physicality, but I saw his
- 37:46Speaker 2: youth yesterday.
- 37:48Speaker 3: And in that, his youth was, he got bumped on
- 37:51Speaker 3: the shot and he kind of, hey, I got bumped.
- 37:56Speaker 3: You're not a star in this game. You're going to
- 37:59Speaker 3: go through some bumps. You're not Siakam. And man, let
- 38:02Speaker 3: me tell you this, for Siakam still to be playing
- 38:05Speaker 3: at this high level in season, I don't know what
- 38:08Speaker 3: season this is for him, but he's still a problem.
- 38:14Speaker 3: And I mean, like, Problem like Manu Ginobili problem because
- 38:18Speaker 3: they seem so wow, but they're finishing at the basket.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Him in transition, they don't know what to do.
- 38:25Speaker 3: You got to meet a guy like that in transit
- 38:27Speaker 3: because he gets going with a head of steam and
- 38:30Speaker 3: you think, oh man, he's just wow. No, it's purposeful
- 38:34Speaker 3: with what he's doing and he's finishing at the basket.
- 38:38Speaker 1: It still always look like Siakam about to elbow somebody
- 38:40Speaker 1: in the face. I would hate to guard him. It
- 38:42Speaker 1: always look like it's this close.
- 38:44Speaker 2: You know what? This is basketball.
- 38:46Speaker 3: I get tired of y'all talking about now we review
- 38:49Speaker 3: things and was it a basketball play?
- 38:52Speaker 2: You know what?
- 38:53Speaker 3: You think Charles Oakley made basketball plays all the time?
- 38:57Speaker 1: No.
- 38:58Speaker 2: You run across the bench, ah, take that young fella.
- 39:01Speaker 2: You know, they need that in their life, man.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Did you just say they need it in their lives?
- 39:12Speaker 1: They need it, bruh.
- 39:14Speaker 3: You need a little of this. This helps you remember, like,
- 39:17Speaker 3: I better not go over there like that again. And
- 39:21Speaker 3: my grandmother said hard, hard hit, make it soft behind it.
- 39:25Speaker 3: And she used to always use this phrase with me.
- 39:27Speaker 3: You don't believe fat meat is greasy.
- 39:29Speaker 2: It's not like... I do. No, you don't because you
- 39:32Speaker 2: keep doing wrong.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Hey, man, I do believe in the playoff foul. Like
- 39:37Speaker 1: we've seen, I had a couple of good fouls. I'm like, nope,
- 39:39Speaker 1: playoff foul. And they were respected as being playoff fouls.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Now, you know, Bomani, I'm not a lover of officials.
- 39:48Speaker 3: But I mean, I hate that every single time people
- 39:51Speaker 3: want to do this. You know what this does? This
- 39:55Speaker 3: takes the onus off the ref. This tells the ref,
- 39:58Speaker 3: you're not good at doing your job. We want to
- 40:00Speaker 3: see something in second time, slower time to see if, yeah,
- 40:05Speaker 3: we can get it right then. But I just feel
- 40:09Speaker 3: this way is that just as many as what people
- 40:13Speaker 3: call bad calls, there's just as many good calls. And
- 40:17Speaker 3: It's not one-sided except with that one official who's no
- 40:21Speaker 3: longer officiating the sport of basketball anymore. I'm not talking
- 40:25Speaker 3: about him. I'm talking about these guys that we have
- 40:28Speaker 3: out there. And I love the fact that, you know,
- 40:31Speaker 3: if they make a mistake, they make a mistake. But
- 40:33Speaker 3: I guarantee you this. A mistake is not just made
- 40:36Speaker 3: for the opponents. It's also for the home team as well.
- 40:41Speaker 3: And I just wish we would stop that with the
- 40:44Speaker 3: whole thing when something happens.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Oh, let's go to replay. Let's go to replay. It
- 40:47Speaker 2: stops the Florida game.
- 40:49Speaker 3: And then you're taking the onus off of the refs
- 40:52Speaker 3: and not saying that they can do a good job.
- 40:54Speaker 2: My goodness, we got three of them out there on
- 40:56Speaker 2: the floor, man.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I want to switch gears a little bit and I
- 41:00Speaker 1: will start general and then bring it back to specific.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Generally speaking, do you think. that teams should still be
- 41:09Speaker 1: in the market for Kevin Durant, given that your options
- 41:12Speaker 1: are really either a one-year rental or you're going to
- 41:14Speaker 1: probably need to give him a two-year extension. So let's
- 41:16Speaker 1: say you're signing up for three more years of Kevin Durant.
- 41:18Speaker 3: I don't think so. And I say it with this. But, Monty,
- 41:23Speaker 3: there was a time where guys hung around the NBA,
- 41:28Speaker 3: maybe for financial reasons, you know, bad investment. This is
- 41:33Speaker 3: kind of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar kind of thing.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Or.
- 41:37Speaker 2: You know, the send off, you know, with Julius Irving.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Nowadays, I think you have too many guys hanging around
- 41:46Speaker 3: because they love what it does for them. It is
- 41:50Speaker 3: not about the finances. It is not about anything other
- 41:54Speaker 3: than wanting to be in that limelight. And I guess
- 41:59Speaker 3: it's their high to be still involved in basketball. When
- 42:04Speaker 3: you hit 40 in the NBA or 37, if you
- 42:08Speaker 3: got a lot of minutes, you shouldn't have a lot
- 42:10Speaker 3: of minutes. If you are being that mentor a la
- 42:14Speaker 3: Vince Carter, who bounced around all over the place, bounced
- 42:17Speaker 3: around all over the place, but he was mentoring on
- 42:20Speaker 3: that bench. He was that other coach for that team
- 42:23Speaker 3: to help, you know, pass that message on what's necessary
- 42:27Speaker 3: in the game of basketball. So I think there's a
- 42:31Speaker 3: lot of guys hanging around too much right now. and
- 42:33Speaker 3: it takes away from others developing and being a better
- 42:36Speaker 3: opportunity for them. But you're older, you're talking about wearing
- 42:41Speaker 3: tear on the body, and you see them breaking down
- 42:44Speaker 3: at the most inopportune times. That only happens because you
- 42:47Speaker 3: shouldn't be playing a sport like that at that age
- 42:50Speaker 3: with all the miles that you might have on your body.
- 42:53Speaker 1: You know, I have, mostly in the context of LeBron,
- 42:57Speaker 1: people have gotten upset with me where I've said this,
- 42:59Speaker 1: where I'm like, I'm ready for the next generation to
- 43:02Speaker 1: have their place. I don't think that guys are supposed
- 43:05Speaker 1: to be at the top of mind for this long, right?
- 43:10Speaker 1: And so it's incredible that LeBron has done it and
- 43:12Speaker 1: I can't blame him for not stopping because he can
- 43:14Speaker 1: still play. Like I'm not saying he should quit because
- 43:17Speaker 1: I'm ready for something new, but I am saying in
- 43:20Speaker 1: terms of like how we consume the product or the
- 43:22Speaker 1: natural rhythm of a league, it's odd that the guys
- 43:27Speaker 1: that are still at top of mind are Steph Curry
- 43:29Speaker 1: after 16 years in the NBA, LeBron after 21 years,
- 43:33Speaker 1: in the NBA or 22 years in the NBA I'm
- 43:35Speaker 1: sorry James Harden 16 years in the NBA and we
- 43:39Speaker 1: could go on with guys that are in the same
- 43:41Speaker 1: neighborhood and so it is a big change that guys
- 43:44Speaker 1: are staying this long and I think the point that
- 43:46Speaker 1: you hit that kind of explains something that I had
- 43:48Speaker 1: not properly expressed was that guys didn't always play until
- 43:53Speaker 1: literally they could not play anymore Right now with Durant,
- 43:56Speaker 1: it's interesting, though, because he doesn't play a lot of games.
- 43:59Speaker 1: He's still really good when he plays. And it's hard
- 44:02Speaker 1: to imagine there's ever going to be a world where
- 44:04Speaker 1: he can't get shots up. But at some point, being
- 44:07Speaker 1: Kevin Durant in year 19, whether it be year 19
- 44:10Speaker 1: or near year 20, at some point, the payoff is
- 44:13Speaker 1: going to change.
- 44:14Speaker 3: And to add to that, I just want everyone to
- 44:18Speaker 3: understand this.
- 44:19Speaker 2: You're not saying that he cannot do it. You're not
- 44:23Speaker 2: saying he's not talented.
- 44:25Speaker 3: Enough to do it but i go into this the
- 44:27Speaker 3: wear and tear on the bodies like i don't know
- 44:32Speaker 3: off the top of my head but kevin's average minutes
- 44:36Speaker 3: per game for his career has got to be in
- 44:39Speaker 3: the high 30s and we're already talking about someone who's
- 44:44Speaker 3: had an achilles issue and the frame of kevin is
- 44:48Speaker 3: not one of bulk that that's the thing that's impressive
- 44:51Speaker 3: about lebron it allows him to It allows LeBron to
- 44:56Speaker 3: move over to another position.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Whereas LeBron's not, he's not on the wing anymore.
- 45:02Speaker 3: He's guarding the fours and the fives now. So because
- 45:06Speaker 3: of his physical being, he could do that. Kevin is,
- 45:11Speaker 3: he is not that big guy. Now, you might get
- 45:15Speaker 3: him a good one, two years maybe, but if you're building,
- 45:20Speaker 3: who's going to replace that? Those are the things that
- 45:23Speaker 3: come to my mind when you talk about what he's doing.
- 45:25Speaker 3: We're not talking about his skill set. But what happens
- 45:28Speaker 3: after two years when you have vested a lot into him?
- 45:33Speaker 2: And now what do you do in year three?
- 45:37Speaker 1: By the way, Kevin Durant averaged 36 and a half
- 45:39Speaker 1: minutes last season. And in year 18, 36 and a
- 45:47Speaker 1: half minutes a game.
- 45:48Speaker 3: I got to say this, but that's impressive. It really
- 45:52Speaker 3: is impressive from the standpoint of all the years and
- 45:56Speaker 3: all the minutes that he's played.
- 45:59Speaker 2: He has never.
- 46:01Speaker 3: Been a role guy, you know, where he got 12
- 46:04Speaker 3: minutes and had a solid 12.
- 46:06Speaker 2: I went three for four.
- 46:09Speaker 3: That's the thing is that he doesn't know how to
- 46:12Speaker 3: be anything else, which is a credit to who he is.
- 46:17Speaker 3: But that is truly amazing. Like the minutes that I play,
- 46:22Speaker 3: I was looking at the Olympic team last year and
- 46:27Speaker 3: with him, Steph and LeBron, those three individuals, I was like, wow,
- 46:35Speaker 3: that's a lot of.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Years on the floor.
- 46:40Speaker 3: But the beauty of the IQ, I don't think you
- 46:43Speaker 3: could ever ever get something like that anywhere else.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Now, then you have, you know, you had Joel Embiid. Like,
- 46:54Speaker 2: he didn't look right to me on that team.
- 46:56Speaker 3: It was just, it was moving too fast. And that
- 47:00Speaker 3: FIBA game is different. And to be able to adjust
- 47:06Speaker 3: to what it is there, ball movement, body movement, ball movement,
- 47:10Speaker 3: body movement, it is not for everybody.
- 47:12Speaker 2: And I think that's where the struggle was. with Tatum.
- 47:16Speaker 3: And I remember he got into the game and he
- 47:18Speaker 3: had a rip opportunity, just rip and go to the basket.
- 47:22Speaker 3: He was trying to figure out what he wanted to do.
- 47:25Speaker 3: And I know a lot of people are on Steve Kerr, like, oh,
- 47:29Speaker 3: he should have played this, this, and that. But I
- 47:30Speaker 3: just see the difference in that game over there. You
- 47:34Speaker 3: can't just plug NBA guys in and say.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Hey, we got him.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Now, I'm asking this, you're a San Antonio guy, the
- 47:42Speaker 1: Spurs got the number two pick two years after they
- 47:46Speaker 1: got the number one-est pick of the last however many years,
- 47:51Speaker 1: do you think that they should take Dylan Harper?
- 47:53Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Woo.
- 47:55Speaker 2: No question.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 47:57Speaker 3: Man.
- 47:58Speaker 2: And I say it for this. Dylan Daddy and I,
- 48:01Speaker 2: we real close.
- 48:03Speaker 3: And one of the things that Ron talks about is
- 48:06Speaker 3: the culture of San Antonio for my son being a
- 48:10Speaker 3: professional basketball player. He's going to learn things about being professional.
- 48:19Speaker 3: And there's always a point in life when you see
- 48:23Speaker 3: your son playing at the highest level that you just
- 48:26Speaker 3: realize that you can't do nothing for him. And you
- 48:29Speaker 3: want him in an environment where things can help him
- 48:32Speaker 3: continuously improve, not just as a basketball player, but as
- 48:35Speaker 3: an individual as well. We saw that with Dale Curry
- 48:38Speaker 3: when Steph Went to Golden State. Dale wasn't in the
- 48:42Speaker 3: gym with him with all them shots doing that anymore.
- 48:45Speaker 3: Dale was kicking balls to him because he couldn't reach it. Now,
- 48:49Speaker 3: here you go. So when you have these types of scenarios,
- 48:54Speaker 3: I think it only helps. And his skill, I look
- 48:57Speaker 3: at it like this. A deer and fox, you have Castle,
- 49:03Speaker 3: you have Wimby. There's not going to be pressure for him.
- 49:09Speaker 3: He's going to have a lot of one-on-one opportunities where
- 49:11Speaker 3: he just play the game.
- 49:14Speaker 2: It's not a lot of places you can do that.
- 49:16Speaker 3: And people tend to learn that later in life when
- 49:19Speaker 3: they want to be the man and then they become
- 49:21Speaker 3: the man. Then they realize, oh, wow, it's two people
- 49:25Speaker 3: on me all the time. I no longer have the
- 49:27Speaker 3: freedom to do those other things. So I'm all for
- 49:31Speaker 3: Dylan being a spur because of what it can do
- 49:34Speaker 3: for the club, but also what it can do for him.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Yeah. So you mentioned Fox and I thought that trading
- 49:41Speaker 1: for Fox was a good idea for them when they
- 49:43Speaker 1: did it, but I'm also not the biggest fan of
- 49:46Speaker 1: Fox's game. I do feel good about, like, if you
- 49:49Speaker 1: need somebody to get it done when it matters, Fox
- 49:51Speaker 1: isn't going to be scared. But I feel like there's,
- 49:53Speaker 1: you know what I mean? And there's a value to that,
- 49:55Speaker 1: but there's also a certain inefficiency to his game. I
- 49:59Speaker 1: always wonder, like, what exactly are we going to get here? Like,
- 50:01Speaker 1: I think if they knew that Dylan Harper was going
- 50:03Speaker 1: to be available... for them to take in this draft,
- 50:05Speaker 1: they probably don't go get Fox.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Well, but that's the thing. That's the beauty of having
- 50:12Speaker 2: these type of problems.
- 50:14Speaker 3: Because I think what Fox will add is that he's
- 50:20Speaker 3: never had a group quite like this. He's never been
- 50:23Speaker 3: in a, I think, a surrounding as far as an
- 50:27Speaker 3: organization that Is continuously trying to allow you to be
- 50:31Speaker 3: the best version of you, but more importantly, allowing winning
- 50:36Speaker 3: situations to take place.
- 50:38Speaker 2: That's what it has to be, first and foremost.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Yeah, this is. I've been looking at Victor over there
- 50:46Speaker 1: with the monks. You know what I'm saying? You know,
- 50:48Speaker 1: seeing him down over there with the Shaolin monks. I
- 50:51Speaker 1: like this. Like, I dig the I dig the fact
- 50:54Speaker 1: that at his age, he's thinking about the world in
- 50:57Speaker 1: this way. It is really over there, like kicking it
- 51:00Speaker 1: with the monks.
- 51:01Speaker 3: And you know what, Bomani? How does he learn that?
- 51:05Speaker 3: Who influences that? That's another opportunity. That's a Greg Popovich
- 51:09Speaker 3: deal right there. Getting you outside of yourself to be
- 51:13Speaker 3: a better version of yourself and dig deeper into something.
- 51:17Speaker 3: You know, that's the thing that I was always impressed
- 51:19Speaker 3: about with Pop is his education, all the reading that
- 51:24Speaker 3: he did. He's always handing books out. My thoughts are,
- 51:28Speaker 3: how do you know that.
- 51:28Speaker 2: That book is for me?
- 51:30Speaker 3: That's because you've taken an interest in me And you
- 51:34Speaker 3: feel like this will enhance what I do. When it
- 51:38Speaker 3: comes to Victor, it's slowing the game down in a
- 51:42Speaker 3: way that allows him to see it differently, but also
- 51:47Speaker 3: understand what's required around him as well. The responsibility that
- 51:51Speaker 3: you have. And I think him going around in monks,
- 51:54Speaker 3: he's learning a lot of things to be able to
- 51:57Speaker 3: go there and do that.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Now, this this is the year with the Spurs, because
- 52:00Speaker 1: to be honest, they've been bad for a little bit
- 52:03Speaker 1: too long. This is the time. Before they got Victor,
- 52:08Speaker 1: I didn't think they had any excuse to be as
- 52:10Speaker 1: bad as they were. Now this is a team that
- 52:13Speaker 1: should be top six.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Okay. We'll say top eight at least.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Because it still takes time too with guys that have
- 52:24Speaker 3: never been in that environment as far as playoffs. Understanding
- 52:28Speaker 3: that that back-to-back game, even though you're playing a last
- 52:31Speaker 3: place team in the league on your back-to-back the second
- 52:35Speaker 3: leg of the back-to-back, you still have to prepare as
- 52:38Speaker 3: if that's the top team in the league. And understanding
- 52:41Speaker 3: that it is a requirement now that you give your
- 52:43Speaker 3: best effort night in, night out. Not that you didn't before,
- 52:47Speaker 3: but sometimes you had lapses in thoughts and felt like, oh, okay,
- 52:52Speaker 3: it was just one turnover. I'll get it back in
- 52:54Speaker 3: the third quarter. Now it brings everything into view as
- 53:00Speaker 3: far as, This is what's necessary for us to be
- 53:03Speaker 3: the best version of us. And we can't take steps
- 53:07Speaker 3: backwards and we can't take nights off.
- 53:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Last thing for you. The Knicks need a head coach.
- 53:14Speaker 1: You doubt? I was going to ask who you think
- 53:16Speaker 1: they should hire, but you over there looking like, I
- 53:19Speaker 1: love the idea of you coaching Carl Anthony Towles. That's
- 53:21Speaker 1: what you want to do? You want to get in there?
- 53:23Speaker 2: Honestly, you know what, Bo?
- 53:27Speaker 3: Bo.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Bo Mahoney, I enjoy connecting with guys.
- 53:31Speaker 3: And I believe that it's my connection with individuals that
- 53:36Speaker 3: allows them to see past what they see. It's being
- 53:40Speaker 3: able to encourage guys and say, hey man, no, you're
- 53:42Speaker 3: not just that, you're this. And so if you have that,
- 53:46Speaker 3: if I ever had that type of opportunity, I'd love
- 53:49Speaker 3: to do it because it's what we do. It's you
- 53:53Speaker 3: giving back to the game. It's not just about, oh,
- 53:57Speaker 3: I got this guy. I want him to shoot threes
- 53:59Speaker 3: all the time. No, let's make it where they don't
- 54:02Speaker 3: have to work so hard for their baskets. I watched
- 54:06Speaker 3: Jalen Brunson do what he did this year. And yes,
- 54:09Speaker 3: it was impressive. But all I kept thinking was, he's
- 54:13Speaker 3: so tired. Man, he has to work so hard for
- 54:17Speaker 3: his baskets. I think when you're able to simplify things
- 54:23Speaker 3: and make it where a guy can get a quick
- 54:25Speaker 3: layup or a quick post-up right into their play or
- 54:28Speaker 3: a quick shot because of the movement, that's what you
- 54:32Speaker 3: have to figure out, especially at the NBA level. It
- 54:36Speaker 3: can't be AAU on steroids because that's kind of what
- 54:41Speaker 3: I saw with Houston a little bit this year.
- 54:44Speaker 2: I saw it. an AAU squad.
- 54:47Speaker 3: Going up against a high IQ squad against Golden State.
- 54:50Speaker 3: And you can have all the athletes in the world.
- 54:54Speaker 3: But if they can't play with one another, if they
- 54:56Speaker 3: can't get the ball from one side of the floor
- 54:58Speaker 3: to the other, if they can't set a screen for
- 55:00Speaker 3: one another, then what good is having those athletes? Jalen
- 55:04Speaker 3: Green looked real good when he scored a bunch of points.
- 55:07Speaker 3: But what happened after game two or one? And we
- 55:11Speaker 3: didn't see the same Jalen. And those are the things
- 55:14Speaker 3: where I think it's about getting into that, the brain
- 55:17Speaker 3: of that player and say, hey, no, we can't skip steps.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Come on.
- 55:21Speaker 3: This is how they're playing you. You have to be
- 55:23Speaker 3: able to fight through it. If someone make mention about
- 55:26Speaker 3: your nail color, don't worry about that. It's just something
- 55:29Speaker 3: they're saying to try to get you off your game.
- 55:31Speaker 3: And you're talking about the one who does it the
- 55:33Speaker 3: best in the NBA as far as Draymond Green. So
- 55:36Speaker 3: understand everything he says, you just got to take with
- 55:39Speaker 3: a grain of salt. Those are the things I enjoy
- 55:42Speaker 3: about this game.
- 55:43Speaker 1: And I tell you, I think about watching the Knicks
- 55:46Speaker 1: and Brunson and all that flopping and stuff he do
- 55:49Speaker 1: on defense. I think he halfway there, he ready for
- 55:53Speaker 1: that Bruce Bowen touch on defense. He ready for it. See,
- 55:56Speaker 1: he made me get close to the iPad right now.
- 56:03Speaker 3: Every time I do this, I end up having to
- 56:05Speaker 3: tell my therapist that you know what?
- 56:08Speaker 2: He got to me. It's been years. He hasn't been
- 56:11Speaker 2: on all the stuff that I'm feeling right now.
- 56:13Speaker 3: I knew, but I didn't know exactly when.
- 56:20Speaker 1: I've been waiting for an hour trying to figure out
- 56:24Speaker 1: how I'm going to be able to get this in.
- 56:26Speaker 1: I've been double-dutching. I've been like, how could I get
- 56:29Speaker 1: to it? But New York would love it, Bruce. New
- 56:32Speaker 1: York would love that Bruce Bowen defense.
- 56:34Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 56:36Speaker 3: Not only would Oak be able to come back in
- 56:40Speaker 3: the building if I was there.
- 56:41Speaker 1: This is what I'm saying, man. I'm going to go
- 56:43Speaker 1: over there and they'll let me in the building. I
- 56:45Speaker 1: asked them for a press pass for Whitby's first game.
- 56:48Speaker 1: They didn't even return my email. I'm like, oh, baby,
- 56:51Speaker 1: I think I'm on the list.
- 56:52Speaker 2: What'd you do? What did you say about them?
- 56:55Speaker 1: Probably just said something honest about the Knicks.
- 57:00Speaker 3: Well, you know, what I was happy about is that
- 57:04Speaker 3: they didn't talk about the double dribble with Halliburton in
- 57:08Speaker 3: that game where they end up losing because it was
- 57:11Speaker 3: It was a faux pas, but I remember a time
- 57:15Speaker 3: where they would have complained about that and complained about
- 57:18Speaker 3: it and forgot that they had a game two to
- 57:20Speaker 3: play as well. So, you know, but that next thing, unfortunately,
- 57:26Speaker 3: I would love to know what is it exactly that
- 57:30Speaker 3: you want to accomplish? Because too many times in today's game,
- 57:35Speaker 3: unless you're with an established organization like San Antonio, Golden State,
- 57:42Speaker 3: Miami Heat, OKC. Too many times these players go to
- 57:47Speaker 3: the owner. You know, there's a time where a player
- 57:49Speaker 3: will go to the owner and the first thing the
- 57:51Speaker 3: owner would say is, have you spoken to coach? They're
- 57:54Speaker 3: allowed to backdoor the coach and now they're running things.
- 57:58Speaker 2: I get it. It's a player's league. But you know what?
- 58:01Speaker 3: Just because you have a smart student in the classroom,
- 58:04Speaker 3: he still needs a teacher. He still needs a professor.
- 58:08Speaker 3: And these young boys need the guidance. It's not AAU
- 58:13Speaker 3: and you're going to jump to another team because the
- 58:16Speaker 3: coach took you out. He took you out because you
- 58:18Speaker 3: weren't playing defense or he took you out because you
- 58:21Speaker 3: didn't run the play.
- 58:22Speaker 2: You still need accountability in this.
- 58:24Speaker 3: And it's getting lost because people want to be buddy
- 58:28Speaker 3: up with the owners.
- 58:29Speaker 2: And some of the owners are falling for it.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Bruce Bowen, my man, always a pleasure. And I apologize
- 58:37Speaker 1: for waiting so long, brother. That's on me, man.
- 58:40Speaker 3: But, hey, I did tell you. You got a job, baby.
- 58:43Speaker 3: And I get it. If you were just chilling, man,
- 58:47Speaker 3: I might have a problem.
- 58:49Speaker 1: No, man. Like I said, I know you a busy
- 58:51Speaker 1: man down there. Are you doing your coaching? You doing
- 58:54Speaker 1: your daddying? You know what I'm saying? You got things
- 58:58Speaker 1: to do, brother. That's on me.
- 59:00Speaker 2: Well, hey, let's make sure it doesn't go so long
- 59:02Speaker 2: next time.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Hey, man, you got it, brother. I appreciate it. And
- 59:05Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen, oh, you got something else?
- 59:07Speaker 3: Well, I was going to say, and you can take
- 59:09Speaker 3: me out to dinner. And next time I'm in your area.
- 59:14Speaker 1: You do that. You let me know when you're in
- 59:16Speaker 1: New York. You know what I'm saying? You make it
- 59:17Speaker 1: up here. I got you. I even know the spot.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Big time.
- 59:22Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying, my brother.
- 59:25Speaker 1: I appreciate you. All right, Ryan, you got DraftKings picks
- 59:28Speaker 1: for the people.
- 59:29Speaker 2: Sure do.
- 59:29Speaker 4: We're looking ahead to Game 6 on Thursday. I like
- 59:31Speaker 4: OKC to close it out, so I'm going to take
- 59:34Speaker 4: Shane Gildress-Alexander to have more than 33.5 points. I don't
- 59:37Speaker 4: think Tyrese Halliburton is going to do well, so I
- 59:39Speaker 4: like under 15.5 points for him. The NBA Finals are
