Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: There should be instant fines for loss of data
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yesterday was a bad day for me for some of
- 0:02Speaker 1: my pet peeves. I had trouble getting a car park,
- 0:05Speaker 1: probably half an hour wasted there, I had to go
- 0:08Speaker 1: to the supermarket, which you know that I hate doing,
- 0:12Speaker 1: and Quantus had a data hack. Nothing drives me more
- 0:17Speaker 1: crazy than a business, big or small, although in this
- 0:20Speaker 1: case very big, asking too many personal questions of us
- 0:23Speaker 1: and getting too many personal details about their customers unnecessarily.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So now there is a good argument for why Quantas
- 0:32Speaker 1: of all companies, would need your details. You know, if
- 0:34Speaker 1: you're flying, you need a passport number, you need your
- 0:36Speaker 1: date of birth, your address in case things go wrong,
- 0:39Speaker 1: et cetera, et cetera. I get that, But if they
- 0:41Speaker 1: are collecting such sensitive information, our secrets and essentially the
- 0:46Speaker 1: secret to our identity, then can they not keep that safe? Please? No,
- 0:50Speaker 1: they can't, No, they can't. Yesterday, six million Quantus customers names,
- 0:56Speaker 1: email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, frequent flyer numbers, you
- 1:01Speaker 1: name it. Apparently everything but the credit card data. Thank god. Now,
- 1:06Speaker 1: if you can keep your credit card data safe but
- 1:08Speaker 1: not the rest of it, then why not the added
- 1:11Speaker 1: layers of protection for everything else? The date of birth?
- 1:14Speaker 1: Please Honestly, at this point, who cares the information that
- 1:19Speaker 1: was taken is bad enough? And what will they do? Apologize,
- 1:22Speaker 1: send a letter, and then move on until it all
- 1:25Speaker 1: happens again, which it will. We should have instant and
- 1:29Speaker 1: highly aggressive fines for this type of thing happening. Once
- 1:33Speaker 1: your private data is hacked from your third party customer
- 1:36Speaker 1: service center, there is no getting it back. It can
- 1:40Speaker 1: and will be used sold on the black market to
- 1:44Speaker 1: gangs of losers wanting to rip us off. They've opened
- 1:47Speaker 1: a can of worms for us. The sooner these guys
- 1:50Speaker 1: get properly punished, and I'm not talking just about Quantus,
- 1:53Speaker 1: but multinationals and big companies in particular, for being so
- 1:57Speaker 1: cavalier with our information. This sooner it might stop getting stolen,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and then they might also start asking themselves whether they
- 2:06Speaker 1: really need our personal details and so many of them
- 2:10Speaker 1: in the first place. For more from Early Edition with
