- 0:00Hey, everybody, it's Jeff. Just wanted to let you know that this
- 0:02podcast episode was recorded on Wednesday, August ninth, twenty twenty three. By
- 0:07the time you hear this, things may have changed a little bit here and
- 0:10there, but we hope you enjoy the show. All right, everybody,
- 0:38you're listening to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:41sports podcast show in the world. That's right over ten years strong. It
- 0:47is Wednesday, August nine, twenty twenty three when we are recording this episode.
- 0:51And we got a great discussion coming your way. My gosh, I
- 0:55feel tired already, and I'll get to that for in just a second.
- 0:58My throat my voice. Dear freaking lord, I'm Jeff Warren and I'm here
- 1:02at my good buddy Eric Leonard. Oh my gosh, Eric, how you
- 1:04how you doing? I know we were talking before I hit the record button.
- 1:07How are you doing? I'm fine. I think we should start to
- 1:11show over. I didn't feel for you. It was lackluster the interest.
- 1:18I don't feel welcome to the show. You really set the stage for me,
- 1:22and I feel like I'm walking out to a paltry crowd. Can you
- 1:25let's do it again. I feel like hell. I can't believe I'm a
- 1:32want to laugh like that too. Okay, folks, So yeah, I've
- 1:34been dealing with it. If you all can, for you long time listeners,
- 1:38if you remember back to the Super Bowl and I could barely talk,
- 1:41I had a virus on my vocal box. I've had some bizarre and weird
- 1:46like upper gi stuff going on. Long story short, things are still persisting
- 1:49here. And I have this catheter that has these sensors in it going up
- 1:55my nose, down my throat, into my esophaguess right at the top of
- 1:59my stomach. And it is a horrendous feeling right now. I almost wasn't
- 2:04able to get that out right there because of my throat. Oh hold on
- 2:09for a second. I'm serious. I gotta take a drink. I'm gonna
- 2:12have to drink like constantly throughout the show. Here, Eric, we're all
- 2:16waiting, Okay, sorry, there we go. I got to drink.
- 2:20This is the most this is hell. This is actually hell right now,
- 2:23what I'm dealing with. Do you want me to step in? I mean,
- 2:27I'll help it out. You're good, You're good, I mean,
- 2:30we're good. So anyway, if I if I have some issues throughout the
- 2:35show, folks, that is why I have this thing coming out of my
- 2:38freaking nose. And it's up my nose and down my throat and into my
- 2:40sofa guess, and it's not fun. I'll wow the audience with some just
- 2:45classic Carrick leonards. Okay, start us off. Well, you know when
- 2:49Uncle Lenn watch my dog back in the day in Philadelphia, I asked me,
- 2:53babysit my dog. Greatest story ever, folks, you're gonna hear right
- 2:55now about so while Jeff gets a drink. It's two thousand and two,
- 3:00I think somewhere in there, and I went up to Jeff's to go see
- 3:02Hate Bread live in a concert and I std Uncle Len, because you're still
- 3:06living with his parents. I say, do you want to come and watch
- 3:07my dog for me? I know you got you know, you want to
- 3:08get out of the house. You can hang out and drink and watch TV.
- 3:12And I was gone for three or four hours, maybe four or five.
- 3:15I get home from my apartment and the TV's blaring, the lights are
- 3:20on. I opened the door. I opened my apartment door and there's no
- 3:23one around, and my dog's laying in front of the bathroom door, and
- 3:27this is a pretty cell phone, and I just go Len, and all
- 3:30I hear from the bathroom is get me the fuck out of here. My
- 3:36bathroom door broke, The door knob broke, and Lynn was stuck. Lynn
- 3:39was trapped in my bathroom for three hours. He sat in the bathtub and
- 3:44looked at some magazines I had in there and drank water out of the sink
- 3:46until I got home and let him out. The greatest Len's story of all
- 3:53time. It's my favorite story ever. I think of him well because he's
- 3:57Charlie Brown. It's the most Charlie Brown story of all times. Yeah.
- 4:00And my dog, my poor dog's whimpering in front of the door, and
- 4:02I'm like, the dog had free range of the apartment and the human we
- 4:06stuck in the bathroom, right, Yeah, And of course it was lend.
- 4:11What a great story, fantastic story. I appreciate that I was able
- 4:14to take a few SIPs here of my beverage and just to let everybody to
- 4:18know, we've got a great show. We're certainly gonna be talking about this
- 4:20Philadelphia Phillies team and the fact that Michael Lorenzen just now hit or he pitched
- 4:28a no hitter, my gosh, the fourteenth no hitter in Philadelphia Phillies history.
- 4:32Eric and I are going to get into that and just really kind of
- 4:35also talk about this team and where they can still improve for the remainder of
- 4:41the season. Definitely got a ton of Phillies talk coming your way right off
- 4:44the bat, and then got to get into some football talk as well.
- 4:47We know the preseason is here, training camp for all thirty two NFL teams
- 4:53is here. We see in the coverage. However, I know that we're
- 4:57getting tired of hearing about certain players, So we're gonna talk about which NFL
- 5:01player just from any team we are getting incredibly tired of hearing about. And
- 5:06then from there got a ton of Eagles talk. Eric and I are going
- 5:10to talk about the signing of linebackers Miles Jack and Zach Cunningham after Nakobe Dean's
- 5:17ankle injury and the cutting of davey On Taylor, and just how we're gonna
- 5:20be feeling about this linebacker position heading into the season with these acquisitions. And
- 5:26then when we're thrown down on the table this week, I'm gonna be talking
- 5:29with Oj Spivey, the award winning sports and culture journalists from the Philadelphia Tribune.
- 5:34He is going to join us for a look at this Eagles team as
- 5:36they're in a thicket training camp here. So that's gonna be a great discussion
- 5:40with Oj Spivey and Eric. I do have to say, man, like
- 5:44I have been to get us to get us talking first here about like an
- 5:49experience that we just had. And I know we've talked music on this show
- 5:53and our PST specials, which folks, you can go on to our website
- 5:56Philadelphia Sportstable dot com and check out the PSD specials there. I've done some
- 6:00music stuff here, but music is so important to you and I and we
- 6:03had a fantastic experience this past week and listen, I know that metal music
- 6:06might not be you know, everybody's you know, cup of tea or whatever,
- 6:12and metal music might not be everybody's favorite genre out there, but we
- 6:15had an amazing experience this past weekend and we kind of just wanted to talk
- 6:20about it here and get into getting up in the mid forties here our age
- 6:26and having that type of experience was really cool. It was really great and
- 6:30just there were some little little things here, a little nuances here and there,
- 6:34and little stories about our experience that we wanted to get into. So
- 6:40buddy, why why don't you let folks know what I'm talking about here and
- 6:43we'll kind of just talk about the experience. Yeah, it was fun.
- 6:46Saturday night, Lamb of God and Pantera played Hershey Park Arena or I'm sorry
- 6:53stadium and uh. Through my daughter's dance school, you could volunteer to be
- 6:58an usher, and I volunte tire Jeff and I to be an ushroom.
- 7:00We got in and it was it was weird. We got there and we
- 7:05didn't know where to go. We walked all over the place, finally found
- 7:09we're supposed to be and it was a lot of like older people, so
- 7:14I think, do it all the time out of fun, out of the
- 7:16house, and a lot of i'll just say it, mouth breathers with tattoos
- 7:21who wanted to go to the show. Yes, it was. It was
- 7:25an interesting crowd, and I think Jeff and I stood out right away as
- 7:28like two people that kind of were able bodied and kind of had our ship
- 7:30together. So we we kind of finagled our way up to probably the best
- 7:36spot in the house. We were right by the pit and we were handing
- 7:41out wristbands to go in and out of the pit, and it was hilarious
- 7:46because Pantera's in their upper fifties. The remaining members are their upper fifties.
- 7:50Lamb of Gods, you know my age. This is my fourteenth time seeing
- 7:54Lamb of God. I mean I had beers with them back in the day
- 7:57in Philadelphia, like in two thousand and two thousand and one. And uh.
- 8:01But the security guy came over and he's like, listen, this is
- 8:05a metal crowd. People. They're gonna be ripping chairs apart and throwing fists
- 8:09and punching, and this is gonna be an ugly, ugly crowd. Yeah,
- 8:13you gotta watch for the chairs. Man. You gotta hear this older
- 8:16guy I've got his name is Larry. I don't care, I'm gonna say
- 8:20his name name. Good old hey Larry. He's like, seriously, you
- 8:26gotta watch out for the chairs. There's been reports that this band, you
- 8:30know, their fans are just ripping apart chairs it shows, and just throwing
- 8:33them around and stuff. Meanwhile, Eric, you and I are kind of
- 8:37like looking at each other and thinking to ourselves, what God's name is this
- 8:43guy talking about? Like what is he talking about? It's like I've actually,
- 8:46you've seen Lamb of God fourteen times. I think. I think this
- 8:50past week was my tenth time seeing them, and I do not ever remember
- 8:54anything like that happening, even like fifteen years ago when we were seeing them.
- 9:00I mean, I remember an O two you broke your nose at the
- 9:03Hatebread show. Yes, I've been to some violent metal Slayer being really violent.
- 9:09I've been to hardcore shows where people got punched in the face. And
- 9:13to me, like, this was a this was a hard this was like
- 9:16a classic metal rock show where the audience was going to be like in their
- 9:22forties and fifties. And I think Larry was reading headlines from ninety three nineteen
- 9:26ninety three when Panteri shows were really violent and we were just leak there like
- 9:33this is no And within twenty minutes of people come into the show, Jeff
- 9:37and I were like, oh my god, there were people who needed There
- 9:39were guys who needed help to their chairs. Yes they had a braces on,
- 9:43yes, canes, And I'm like, these they're not going to take
- 9:48the chairs apart they need them from balance. Yes, like Jeff at one
- 9:52point like there's no wait, there's any violent there was, nothing had happened
- 9:56that was wild. There were a couple of drunk people. One guy offered
- 9:58Jeff twenty bucks get into the pit area. Yep, that was pretty much
- 10:01the wildest thing we saw and u but but still it was really cool to
- 10:07be that close to the show. Lambagow was fantastic. It was a cool
- 10:11experience and it was kind of it was really cool just kind of seeing the
- 10:13backstage kind of happened behind you before a show. And then unfortunately, I
- 10:20mean Pantera came on and it was quickly realized like, oh, this is
- 10:24like a Panteric cover band. Yeah, there's still two live members, and
- 10:28it was sad really quickly. Actually, it was interesting for me that what
- 10:35the lambagad drummer of Art Cruise I think is his name correct, Yeah,
- 10:39yeah, Art Cruise. He we saw him a number of times just walking
- 10:45out in the in the general public. And I know that that may sound
- 10:48like, Okay, who cares he's walking around, but you know, he
- 10:52probably did have one of the security guys with it. I don't even know
- 10:56if the guy was a security guy, but all he wanted to do was
- 10:58take pictures of the coasters at Hershey Park. And he's walked, sorry,
- 11:05and he's walked walking around and he is just he walked through the pit and
- 11:11nobody knew him. Nobody even recognized the guys. So it was exactly,
- 11:16yes, exactly, And what amazed me is that people need to see famous
- 11:22people at times, or very well known people at times within a certain genre,
- 11:26whether it's music, acting, whatever art form it is, you need
- 11:30to see them doing that performance within that art form in order to recognize them.
- 11:35Again, he was walking through the pit and nobody recognized him at all,
- 11:39to be like, oh my god, art, how you doing?
- 11:41Man? Do you mind signing this or whatever? It was amazing and I
- 11:45really just kind of took a step back from that and was like, wow,
- 11:48this guy has First off, not that he would have any fear of
- 11:52going out in public or anything, but you know, you could get a
- 11:54bunch of people just around you when you're not in that headspace. You know,
- 11:58you don't want to you with the general public at times because you are
- 12:03famous in that certain realm. But he didn't care. He didn't care,
- 12:07and it was really cool and interesting to see. Well, let's let's not
- 12:11forget why guys get into bands to begin with, what's the genesis of it?
- 12:15Typically right, talent, the music, and girls. Right. And
- 12:18he's the youngest member of the band. He's single, the only single member
- 12:22of the band. Glick and dude tatted up good shape. He was definitely
- 12:26looking. I think he was like scoping out girls. I think that was
- 12:30definitely what he was doing. That, yes, for sure, because I
- 12:33mean he picked out the wrong crowd in hindsight, Oh yes he did.
- 12:37We kind of walked. Yeah, I've used this term on the show before.
- 12:41Rode hard and put Away wet. Quite a bit of that going on.
- 12:46Some girls that have you know, or some women that have not been
- 12:48out to a show in twenty years. God bless him. You know,
- 12:52they were out. But it was funny watching because I thought the same thing,
- 12:54like, wow, he's just walking around, but you know, at
- 12:58the same time, like he's he's probably looking for girls. Yeah, yeah,
- 13:03we have to talk about We worked with this woman. We have talked
- 13:05about Joe, Joe, We love Joe, Joe is fantastic. Joe's an
- 13:09older woman. She had no clue what Lamb of God and Pantera was like
- 13:16even his band. She had no concept of it at all. And she
- 13:18works a lot of shows, and after Lamb of God played, she came
- 13:22to Jeff and I and just said, excuse me, are you into this
- 13:28music? Yeah? Do you like this music? Yeah? We're like,
- 13:31oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I's my fourteen time just seeing them.
- 13:33She's like, really, that's Satanic band. You really enjoy that music.
- 13:39It's like, ohoh, it's like, wait, wait a minute, where
- 13:41did you go with this? Like sat no ken, She goes, look
- 13:46at those symbols. Look at those symbols on the stage that they have,
- 13:50like the art work up there, look at those symbols. That's Satanic.
- 13:52And I said, Joe, Joe, I go, come on, I
- 13:54go no, No, I said, they're not. I said, I
- 13:56said, I absolutely promise they are not say tanic. I said, we've
- 14:01been listening to this band basically since they started, and you know, it's
- 14:05been decades that we've been listening to this band and buying their music and listening
- 14:09to it. I said, they're not Satanic. I promise. I don't
- 14:11think I convinced her, but I was. I was. I was trying
- 14:13to make light of it. In a way of my gosh, this is
- 14:16utterly ridiculous right now, that this woman is trying to tell us that this
- 14:22band who who, We know their catalog very well, we understand this band
- 14:28very well, Eric, and she's trying to tell us that they're Satanic just
- 14:33because they had a few symbols with their artwork on stage. And at one
- 14:37point I was trying to hide the tattoo on my left arm because one of
- 14:39the symbols she was talking about the bird from Ashes of the Wake, and
- 14:43I have a text in my left bicep, and I was like, I
- 14:46hope she doesn't think I'm Satanic. I'm like that bird is like anti war,
- 14:50it has nothing to do with Satan. And I heard some of her
- 14:54symbolism she was trying to describe and I was just like, ah, Joe,
- 14:58I love you love Christian music. You told us, you know.
- 15:01And it was very funny when she said her son in law when she said
- 15:07she was going to see or work the pantry Lamba Goot show, and someone
- 15:09was like, do you have any idea what that is? She didn't even
- 15:13like she didn't she didn't know. I mean, yeah, she was very
- 15:18concerned and because she did tell us that she listened to Christian music. I
- 15:22genuinely think. We asked her about it, and she she claimed, no,
- 15:26that it wasn't like that, it wasn't like this, but she was
- 15:28like, I could have she signed up for that because she thought Lamb of
- 15:31God was actually a Christian band. She had to him, I know,
- 15:35and I wanted to ask her that question, but I didn't want to make
- 15:37it feel stupid, so I didn't say it. Yeah, but Joe wonderful
- 15:41woman. I absolutely like, I love my time with her. Hanging out
- 15:45with her at the show very sweet and uh and if I if I you
- 15:50know, I worked another show, I hope she's there. Yeah. That
- 15:52was fun. Man, it was man like just to see the machine that
- 15:58goes into it and that's like a small that was what eight thousand to ten
- 16:02thousand people, eight to ten thousand, yep. You can only imagine what
- 16:04goes into like a Taylor Swift show, Metallica, the Metallica shows that are
- 16:08going on. Lee hell Man, there was so many trucks and people and
- 16:12just and just just watching it all and listening to I mean, it's so
- 16:17freaking loud that close and like even the warm ups are so I don't know,
- 16:22and just to think we're that band, like I go back with them,
- 16:25way way back, and just you know, you were early truck shows
- 16:29with me ye Philly, and just to hear them warm up and you're just
- 16:33like, holy shit, it come a long way. Man had like four
- 16:37Marshall stacks. Maybe you know, it's not just a wall of them,
- 16:41and it just blows your mind. It was cool seeing them and it was
- 16:44kind of a neat experience. It absolutely was highly recommend folks if you're in
- 16:48the metal out there. I know not everybody is. It's not everybody's cup
- 16:51of tea, like I said before, but if you're in the medal,
- 16:52you got to see a Lamb of God show. And like Eric said,
- 16:55the pan Terror show, it was a little bizarre. It was great for
- 16:57me as a guitarist to see Zach Wild playing the first time I ever saw
- 17:00him play. And but it really was like a cover band playing Pantera songs
- 17:06like Eric said, and I was. We were kind of just like,
- 17:07it's really weird. And Charlie Benante from Anthrax was the drummers. Drummer,
- 17:12he was really freaking. The band was good, but Phil and Salmo kind
- 17:18of turned me off. He and he and the you know, the Paul
- 17:23brothers didn't exactly, you know, leave on good terms, right and every
- 17:29song, after every song he was like, we love you brothers, And
- 17:32I'm like, didn't they hate you? Shit about both of them? And
- 17:37it's such a cash grab and just and he just kind of stands there and
- 17:38sings the songs. Now it doesn't move, right, I mean I understand
- 17:41that. Like we you know, we talked about Henry Rollins how he can't
- 17:45move anymore, and how Randy from lam mcgod wears his knee braces now because
- 17:48he does his huge jumps and he knew for twenty some years. And you
- 17:52kind of see the side effects of that kind of music and and you saw
- 17:56it with Phil and Salmo's just standing there. It's like that's kind of blows
- 18:00yeah, run around, you know exactly. Yeah, all right, Well
- 18:04we loved to talking about that right there. Obviously. I just it was
- 18:08a great, great experience and and my man, I thank you so much
- 18:11for invite me out. That was really great. It was a great,
- 18:15great time. So you can hear it in my voice there, right,
- 18:18folks, you can hear it. You can hear the catheter and rate in
- 18:22my freaking throat. Oh my gosh, well, listen, we gotta talk
- 18:26about this Philadelphia Phillies team. We have to talk about the fact that one
- 18:30Michael Lorenzen, his second start as a Philadelphia Philly he threw the fourteenth no
- 18:37hitter in Phillies history, the first no hitter since two thousand fifteen, and
- 18:42the first no hitter at Citizens Bank Park since Roy Halliday did that on October
- 18:48sixth, two thousand and ten, in Game one of the two thousand and
- 18:51ten National League Division Series against the Reds. My gosh, Eric, you
- 18:56said you were out, You were with your son, and you were watching
- 19:00game. It was muted where you were app and you were looking up at
- 19:03a fifth ending like, holy cow, there's there's something special possibly going on
- 19:07here. But my gosh, Lorenz and he is going to go down in
- 19:11Philly sports folk history, and we are all going to remember this for the
- 19:17rest of our lives. What a freaking monumental night. I mean, my
- 19:21son and I were at I take him to this baseball clinic place where we
- 19:26work on his game. We left there, I went to my buddy macros
- 19:29Had. I had a beer, we got food, and it's just like
- 19:33fourth inning. I'm like, do I see uh runs, hits airs,
- 19:37all balls across across the line, all, you know, all zeros And
- 19:40I'm like okay, and then we by the time we leave its sixth inning,
- 19:42it's still the same, like, holy shit, dude, we gotta
- 19:45go home, like this is I can't least this happening. And I'm talking
- 19:48to Mac and he's like, I think this is really a no hitter.
- 19:51I'm like, wow, okay, it's been like you said, twenty fifteen,
- 19:53right, yeah, was asked that that my goodness. I mean we're
- 19:57eight years, yes, twenty fifteen the last time. Yeah, I was
- 20:03in my thirties. That's how long it's been. And I was just what
- 20:08a performance. And I think I text you in Len when they made the
- 20:11trade that I was like, I love this trade. Yeah, I mean,
- 20:15this is you need arms, I was all. I was already for
- 20:19the show to talk about getting him. Is it gives you one of the
- 20:23better starting pitching lineups in in based in the National League, and it probably
- 20:30helps your middle relief. I didn't see this coming and I was texting my
- 20:33brother too. Beyond you know, beyond tonight, like his first starting against
- 20:37some Marlins on the the third, Yeah, August third, he won eight
- 20:41innings, gave up what six hits I think and two runs and uh and
- 20:48is this the best Phillies debut ever? Like the over over two games,
- 20:52it seems like it would be. I mean, I'm I'm having trouble remembering
- 20:57what could have been, like a bigger, better debut. Was there a
- 21:03bat that maybe did something? Seriously I'm not I'm not remembering well what my
- 21:08brother did. Text me one back, but real quick, Lorenzen stats and
- 21:14and I'll go with it bat because like a pitcher, you kind of count
- 21:17that as what ten games because they only start two over five or six days?
- 21:21Yeah, but two and oho one oh six r a two games started,
- 21:26seventeen innings, six six, six hits, two and runs, ten
- 21:30strikeouts with a whip of point six five. That is insane. Yes,
- 21:34he made the All Star Game, but everyone kind of I mean, some
- 21:37people in the in the press called it a fluke because he's not been that
- 21:41good in his whole career. He I mean, you look at his splits
- 21:44for the last two months. It's insane, especially for August now, but
- 21:48my brother did hit me up with uh Reese Hoskins ten homers in seventeen games
- 21:53when he first came up seven consecutive games with the home run eleven home runs
- 21:57and sixty four bats. That's true. Yeah, yeah, that's I think
- 22:03it's I think those are the those are the top two over the past.
- 22:04My god, would it be ten years, fifteen years? But if we
- 22:07had to put one guy like the best at this point, the best debut,
- 22:12like, what would it be Reese? I don't know over over that
- 22:17time period, do you know what I mean? Yeah? But I I
- 22:19you gotta got Rens in because it's pitching is more meaningful, and it's that's
- 22:23true. His last start is is historic, right right, They're both fantastic,
- 22:30But I gotta put the Rens in at number one because I'm sure I'm
- 22:34missing one. Maybe that will you know, probably kick me in the butt,
- 22:38but I that is a that is a monumental start. I'm sure his
- 22:41third start is going to be horrendous. Who cares? He'll be giving for
- 22:45it, right, But man, that that's that is we didn't had the
- 22:49Marlins start. Yeah, but I mean that that he crushed the Marlins and
- 22:52everyone was thrilled. And then he does this, and and against two teams
- 22:56in your division. That is gigantic. I no, I'm with you.
- 23:00Yeah, I absolutely did. You know, thinking about it now, that
- 23:03run that Reese had when he was brought up, I mean, it was
- 23:07it was incredible, It was great. We're like, my gosh, we
- 23:10have the first basement of the future. And then we got to know Reese
- 23:12Hoskins a little bit more, of course, and just how streaky he could
- 23:18be. But yeah, when you look at it at the end of the
- 23:21day, it's a no hitter. You know, there's only fourteen now no
- 23:25hitters in Philly's history. Michael Lorenzen has one of them. So yeah,
- 23:29I absolutely agree with you. Definitely the best debut for sure. But but
- 23:34Eric, I also wonder too about this team as we're moving on here,
- 23:37that like, what how they can improve for the remainder of this season,
- 23:42because certainly not everything is perfect. Not everything's perfect with every team out there.
- 23:45I mean even the Braves, you know, things aren't necessarily perfect with
- 23:49them, even though they're killing it. I'm wondering could they improve even more
- 23:55because they do have a weak schedule here at this during the second half of
- 24:00the season. And you know, I even put in our outline here,
- 24:03you know, perhaps lean on pitching even more now with that six man rotation.
- 24:08Look what Michael Lorenzen just to hit, of course, you know.
- 24:11So, I don't know, how do you think that they're going to be
- 24:14able to improve for the remainder of the season. I think it's a combination
- 24:18of things. If I had to put one thing on it, I would
- 24:21certainly put a week's schedule, of course, But then again, this team
- 24:26needs to be able to hit home runs in certain situations. They seem to
- 24:30be doing that now, and of course they're playing teams like the Royals and
- 24:33the Nationals at this moment. But again, I think the schedule is very
- 24:37much in their favor down the stretch. I don't know what are your thoughts
- 24:41about how they can still improve for the remainder of the season. Here,
- 24:45the offense was dreary for a while, and it's a classic. It can
- 24:51only get better, you know. Yeah, I think it's really important because
- 24:56it was already starting to get hot before the trade deadline, and then he
- 24:59made the moves that they did. And again I gotta give Dombrowski a lot
- 25:03of credit. He's actually the perfect GM for this team because they're a veteran
- 25:07team. They don't need the farm system right now. That's just, you
- 25:11know, that's just kind of where the Phillies are at. And to trade
- 25:15away prospects for what they got was really smart. And the offense is going
- 25:19to come around, man, And if Trey Turner can start to hit and
- 25:25the rest of the guys can stay consistent, hope Brandon Marsh comes back soon.
- 25:30The schedule is just it's paltry, it really is. I mean,
- 25:33the Twins. Twins are a decent team, but they're in Philly. The
- 25:37Blue Jays. I kind of consider the Blue Jays and Phillies kind of be
- 25:41the same same level they got the Nats Giants, we're kind of on the
- 25:45same level as then. The Cardinals are having a bad year, Angels are
- 25:48subpar. They have plenty of time to kind of get in that groove offensively,
- 25:52and if the Arms can keep doing what they're doing, I'm hoping a
- 25:56lot of momentum happened tonight with with Lorenz's performance. That was thank god it
- 26:00happened at home. That was pretty big. It really got the crowd,
- 26:03you know, into it and going. And I I can't say enough about
- 26:07him. I've never really watched him pitch too much. He was one of
- 26:11those prospects that came up I think in the Oh my god, it was
- 26:15a Tiger system, I forget, but he was a name when he first
- 26:18came out. He was one of those guys, we'll pick him up in
- 26:21the fantasy thing. He's he's going to be something else, and he kind
- 26:23of never panned out. Maybe he's shaping into form. And he's really interesting
- 26:29as a right handed pitcher because he goes he goes fastball, slider, changeup.
- 26:34He has no curveball, and he does it cutter sometimes, but his
- 26:38slider is sick. And the combo of that fastball slider and then the change
- 26:44up, the kind of the slider drops one direction, the change goes in
- 26:47the other direction. That's really unique for right hander. A lot of them
- 26:51do the curveball thing, and his slider is kind of his curveball. It
- 26:55really works for him. And you know, there's a long history of team
- 27:00players changing leagues. Yeah, and American in to National and vice versa.
- 27:07And yeah, I know teams play each other across across the league now but
- 27:11there's always been a decent history with that of players changing, and he's already
- 27:15he's already playing really well. I think he's I think he's gonna be perfect
- 27:18for the Phillies down the stretch. And I'd honestly be afraid if I was
- 27:22another team in the wild card hunt, because you're kindly gonna catch the Braves.
- 27:26There's just too damn good. But if I was the Braves and we
- 27:30face them again in the playoffs so we did last year, I'd be scared
- 27:33to death with If the lineup's going and we have those arms, Yeah,
- 27:37like that, Phillies would be a really formidable opponent. Absolutely, absolutely,
- 27:41Lorenzen said after the game. He said, I've watched every single one of
- 27:45Nolan Ryan's no hitters because I've always wanted to throw a no hitter. And
- 27:48the fact that I just did it in front of this fan base, I
- 27:51can't believe it. And I love that he mentioned the fan base in his
- 27:56comments after the game. Eric, I love that, and I love the
- 28:00fact too that each and every time we see these Phillies games on our televisions,
- 28:06the stadium is packed. Citizens Bank Park is packed on a Wednesday night,
- 28:11it's packed on a freaking Tuesday night. Also, it's incredible how the
- 28:17fans and these players have been connecting with each other. I talked to our
- 28:21good friend Jeff Kerr from CBS Sports on our table talk show this past week
- 28:26about the fact that the most bizarre thing that we have seen from the fan
- 28:30base ensure it was pushed by ninety four w ip, but the standing ovation
- 28:36for Trey Turner and it got him to a point after he smacked that home
- 28:40run shortly thereafter and he buys some billboard real estate in Philadelphia thanking the fan
- 28:45base. I have never seen anything like that ever in sports. I have
- 28:49never seen anything like that, I should say Major League Baseball, can't say
- 28:52in sports in general, but because I haven't. But still, it was
- 28:56the fan base and the connection with this team is something I think that is
- 29:00pretty special. Whether it's with Michael Rensen, what he did tonight and how
- 29:04he mentioned the fan base, whether it's Trey Turner saga in situation, and
- 29:08just how we're seeing Citizens Bank Parrot Park full every single night. It's it's
- 29:15really it's been a really cool season. Man. Yeah, and I okay,
- 29:19I hate talking about the Philly fan thing. We're a Philadelphi sports podcast,
- 29:26and I hate talking about the fan stuff that we're the worst fans in
- 29:29the world. Yes, we're askals. Sure, I've seen it, Okay,
- 29:33I've been Eagles games. I've seen Vikings fans almost getting their jerseys lit
- 29:40on fire. I've seen it. Okay, it's really shitty. I've seen
- 29:42Cowboys fans get punched out. They deserve it. But I've been to Sixers
- 29:48games, with six Er Celtics games and it gets ugly as how. Having
- 29:52said that, we're in a new era of fandom where positivity is just kind
- 29:59of universal across most fandom now right, Younger people not as negative, and
- 30:07it's definitely kind of reverberated through Philadelphia. How many like I have I have
- 30:12not heard bad Eagles fans stories in a long time, A very long time.
- 30:17Yeah, I'm talking. I'm talking like kids getting punched out. I'm
- 30:21talking like beers thrown on old ladies. Like I'm talking about the shitty stuff
- 30:23that I've seen in my day at the bed and even at the at the
- 30:26link back in the day early on. But that's kind of gone away,
- 30:30and the Phillies fans and I will I'll give Bryce Harper a ton of credit
- 30:36for this, for when he signed a couple of years ago with the team,
- 30:40and he has talked up Philly fans like he is by far probably their
- 30:45best co sponsor and biggest cheerleader. He has said like from day one,
- 30:51I wish I would have started my career here. I love the fans,
- 30:52They're amazing, And he really has kind of kickstarted the fandom in a more
- 30:56positive tone for you know, for the Phillies and man, you know last
- 31:03year when Alec Bomb said I fucking hates his place and the next day everyone
- 31:08was cheering him on man like, it was weird. It was like it
- 31:12was an amalgamation of like the negativity in the past, going yeah, I
- 31:15get it, it sucks here sometimes, but we love you. You're one
- 31:18of us, and like kind of it kind of morphed into what it is
- 31:22now where Alec Bomb can do that and he gets cheered the next day.
- 31:26Trey Turner shits the bed. He lost that game a couple of weeks,
- 31:30a couple of nights ago. Man, I text you guys, going,
- 31:32God damn Tray turn him so pissed him right when he makes he screwed up
- 31:34in the field, and what do the fans do. He comes home,
- 31:37they cheer him on, he hits a home run and he puts a billboard
- 31:41up, thank you. Things have changed, it really has. Eagles are
- 31:44winning super Bowls and Super Bowls that Phantom has changed. The Sixers can do
- 31:48no wrong in terms of fandom. It's just I don't even speak to the
- 31:51Flyers, but like, it's just kind of it is absolutely morphed into what
- 31:56it is now. I'm still getting used to it. I mean I every
- 32:00now and again, I'm like, somebody punch somebody. Man, this is
- 32:01weird. Like I come from more of an old school, you know.
- 32:05Yeah, but but it's way cooler as a fan to kind of watch a
- 32:09player falter and then you see what happening trade turn. It is pretty cool.
- 32:15Yeah, absolutely is it absolutely is. Let us know what you're thinking
- 32:17about this Phillies team. Let us know what you're thinking about Michael Lorenzen his
- 32:21no hitter, What that means in terms of Philly sports history. Do you

- 33:06to take that break now and we'll be back in just a bit with a
- 33:08bunch of football talk. Stick with us, all right, We are back
- 33:14and Eric, NFL season just around the corner. Of the regular season is
- 33:17right around the corner. Had the first preseason game this past week, Jets
- 33:22Browns at the Hall of Fame game, which was I mean, it's a
- 33:25garbage game. We know that everybody knows that, but it's good a football
- 33:29at least for me. I love that it's back on my television screen love
- 33:34following various storylines throughout the course of this preseason, but like, I'm also
- 33:39getting tired already already of certain players in this league who, of course get
- 33:46hype, and it's a thing that happens. Of course, it's natural.
- 33:51You're starting off a sports season, a professional sporting season, certain players are
- 33:55going to be getting more hype than others. Certain players are going to be
- 33:59talked about out more amongst the national media outlets and whether it's on podcasts as
- 34:05well articles written about them, to the point where it's like, man,
- 34:07I'm really getting tired of hearing about this guy already in this season. The
- 34:12regular season hasn't even started. So that being said, we wanted to get
- 34:15into which player we are incredibly tired of hearing about. So I'm gonna let
- 34:22you start off with this, buddy, What is there a player for you
- 34:25that you're just You're just like, oh my god, he's gotta go away
- 34:28or the story's gotta go away at this point, what are you thinking?
- 34:36Right out the bat, I'll say, uh, sorry, I was gonna
- 34:38mess with you, but I'm not going to Okay, yeah, I was
- 34:40gonna say I messed up a sentence in the first part. Can we start
- 34:44over because you're a you're you're esophagus, pipe down, you're thrown. I'm
- 34:50so uncomfortable right now, man, I'm going as fast as I can.
- 34:55It's fine. I mean, I'm not gonna talk about Aaron Jersey because that's
- 35:00probably the obvious answer, because that's you know, with his he's with the
- 35:05Jets. He bought a house in New Jersey. What an asshole you're at.
- 35:09You were in Green Bay your entire career, and you buy a spot
- 35:12in New Jersey, no offense in New Jersey, buy an apartment in New
- 35:15York and date women and just beyond the news, Like what are you doing
- 35:17dude? Anyway, that's beyond I would honestly say my least favorite right now.
- 35:25And this I almost said this is no fault of his own, but
- 35:29it is. It's it's is it is his fault because his actions are fucking
- 35:32deplorable. Deshaun Watson, Oh yeah, yeah, I've heard so many like
- 35:39I flipped through the NFL network coming out on ESPN sometimes and and it's just
- 35:44to hear. Can Deshaun Watson come back from from from the hardships of last
- 35:52year, and he's gone through a lot, and I'm like, and he
- 35:55has some issues. Excuse me, what what are we talking about? Some
- 36:00issues? Yeah, he had hardships. He uh, he paid off what
- 36:07twenty some women that he probably sexually harassed and they're not his issues at this
- 36:12point? Is that what I'm trying to understand. Shame on you NFL network
- 36:15for being apologist once again for Roger Goodell and the league. Do better.
- 36:22But you can because you actually worked for the league. Yeah, the whole
- 36:25Deshaun Watson apology, not a not his apology tour, which he never did,
- 36:30the the Deshaun watching Deshaun Watson apology tour by the media. I watched
- 36:38Phil sims Kid do an interview the other day and he was like, if
- 36:43he can just get past these issues, he's got a bright future this season.
- 36:46I'm like, his issues. What, Yeah, it's not like he's
- 36:51overcoming Lukemi or some shit. Dude Like, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 36:54he kind of put it on himself. He kind of responsible for this shit,
- 36:58So I'm not sure he has to get over He's he's a talented athletic
- 37:04quarterback and he did some shitty things. So I'm really sick of hearing about
- 37:07him, but more so the media kind of underplaying what caused his own issues
- 37:13and that are his own fault. So coincidentally, I'm assuming you're probably not
- 37:17going to listen to the Opposition Territory Show this week because of focused on the
- 37:22Cleveland Browns. Well, whoever you're talking to, I hope they say,
- 37:27guess what, we just get to get this out of the way. Deshaun
- 37:30Watson's a piece of shit. Now we can talk. I'll be honest with
- 37:34you. LJ basically was like I could tell during the interview He's like,
- 37:37I have talked about Deshaun Watson so much. I am so tired of it.
- 37:40We start talking about the defense and he like lit up. I'd be
- 37:45dying for that. Can you imagine like like being responsible for like trying to
- 37:51think, like, say, you own the Reds back in the day and
- 37:52Pete Rose's your manager, that piece of shit. Yeah, and he just
- 37:57I don't want to talk about him. We just talk about the Air Davis
- 38:00and the rest of the team, Like, I don't want to talk about
- 38:01the one. But that's but that's the Brown's responsibility. He had to talk
- 38:06about it. So yep, yep. Absolutely for me. And this may
- 38:09seem like an obvious one because I had been watching the Quarterback documentary on Netflix,
- 38:16and I'm just it's just it's not just him that I'm tired of.
- 38:22It's the narrative around him. And of course it's Patrick Mahomes who I'm talking
- 38:25about here, but the narrative with him of whether or not he actually is
- 38:30the goat at this point, And I'm sitting here thinking to myself, are
- 38:35you are you fucking kidding me? Like, are we actually having these conversations?
- 38:38Are conversations on the internet actually happening about this? And are people actually
- 38:44making the case for this, because at the end of the day, yes,
- 38:47he is a dominant football player in this league right now at this point.
- 38:52He's got two Super Bowls. There is at this particular point in time
- 38:55no stopping him. However, like him or not, Tom Brady's got seven
- 39:00super Bowls and had the greatest of all time career of any football player in
- 39:07NFL history. And that is that I am tired of hearing about how Patrick
- 39:13Mahome is, that is that greatest greatest of all time at the and maybe
- 39:19maybe he's the greatest on the field now here in twenty twenty three. That
- 39:22is fine, make the case for that, But I'm not gonna sit here
- 39:25and let people say that he is the goat when it comes to the overall
- 39:31game of professional football and what the history of this league has been pumped the
- 39:37brakes a little bit. I'd love to see it's. You know, you
- 39:40can even say this about Tom Brady to a certain extent, like, you
- 39:44know, what would his stats have been if he didn't have Randy Moss,
- 39:46if he didn't have Rob Gronkowski, if he didn't have really good coaching,
- 39:52if he didn't do this and that or have this and that. You can
- 39:54say that for all NFL players. You can good ones, bad ones.
- 39:59You can say that for all players. But the fact of the matter is,
- 40:04I mean Mahomes, just like a Brady had as well, you know,
- 40:07had fantastic receivers, and specifically one in Travis Kelsey, a great coach,
- 40:13and Andy Reid. You take Andy Reid away and Travis Kelsey, and
- 40:16I wonder what type of quarterback play you're gonna get from Patrick Mahomes. It's
- 40:21probably gonna be pretty good, But I don't know if we would be having
- 40:23those he's the greatest of all time, which is ridiculous type of conversations that
- 40:29we're having now. And it's just it's it really bothers me for some reason,
- 40:32because I'm a I love history in general, I certainly love sports history.
- 40:37It's particularly NFL history, and it's just it's getting it's bothering me.
- 40:42It bothers me. That I'm defending Tom Brady here too, never really bothers
- 40:46me. But I don't know. That's where I'm at with a guy.
- 40:50I'm getting so tired of hearing about Eric. Okay, I'll push back a
- 40:54little bit. I just want to ask a few questions. So are they
- 40:58seeing grace of all time quarterback or Grace of all time player? Like ever,
- 41:02it's it's a goat. What I have been seeing isn't necessarily a designation
- 41:07of quarterback. They're just saying he's the goat, he's the greatest of all
- 41:10time at this Well, okay, and I've heard people say, like,
- 41:15takeaway Travis Kelcey from him, what does he have? Well, he probably
- 41:17win a Super Bowl er too. I think he's that fucking good. I
- 41:21think he's an all timer. Yeah, but we're in that instant gratification social
- 41:27media world. Now that a guy wins two super Bowls and he's talented as
- 41:31hell, and he's all of a sudden the goat. I hate how quickly
- 41:36we forget history. Yeah. In terms of players, I mean, dude,
- 41:40Jerry Rice, Lawrence Taylor, yeah, White, where do I you
- 41:44know? And I'm not even going to the modern era like we're. I
- 41:47mean, shit, give me Ray Lewis, for God's sakes, right of
- 41:51all time players. In terms of quarterbacks, Tom Brady just retired seven super
- 41:55Bowls. I don't care if you want to say I can't stand the guy
- 41:58either, but come on, that's a surd Joe Montana is still better than
- 42:01Patrick Mahomes talent wise, probably not, we're in a different era, but
- 42:06you know, resume wise, I don't think it's even close. He's destined
- 42:10to become the best of all time. He's that talented. But to give
- 42:15him that crown, it's silly. And I don't like doing that either,
- 42:21But they put a documentary out there and they got to do that shit,
- 42:24And I'm with you. I mean, it's really silly to give a guy.
- 42:30I mean, the guy might wind up with five Super Bowls and He's
- 42:34throwing eighty yard passes behind his back at some point and we're just like,
- 42:37wow, yeah, how are we run? But because much like technology,
- 42:43I think sports is also like like moving moving exponentially. I think we're going
- 42:50to have another Patrick Mahomes in like five years. I don't think it's impossible.
- 42:53The quarterback game, with the way the rules have changed, actually kind
- 42:58of leave it leave it open for someone to become the next Patrick Mahomes are
- 43:02even better. Yeah, right now, he's the best player in the league.
- 43:07Sure, you can't argue that. I will absolutely defend that that point.
- 43:13But I hate the we got a goat here, and you ignore what
- 43:17sixty years of NFL history? Yes, exactly, Well, I think you've
- 43:22said it right. You know, he may be destined to be the greatest
- 43:24of all time. He may be in the future, the goat, but
- 43:28it's not now, it's not here in twenty twenty three. So let's pump
- 43:31the brakes, folks. So let's keep going with some football talk here,
- 43:36Eric, because we're gonna have Oj Spivey from the Philadelphia Tribune on in just
- 43:42a little bit here to talk about Eagles preseason, what he's seeing some storylines
- 43:46as well. But the Eagles just signed linebackers Miles Jack Zach Cunningham after the
- 43:52Kobe Dean's ankle injury. They cut davey On Taylor, third round pick from
- 43:55a few years ago just did not work out and just didn't develop at all.
- 44:00So I was always feeling that the linebacker position going into this season,
- 44:06aside from the safety position, was just one of the weakest position units on
- 44:09this field, And now I'm feeling perhaps a little bit different. Do I
- 44:14think Miles Jack is the same Miles Jack that he was from a few years
- 44:16ago. No, not at all. Even with Zach Cunningham. I do
- 44:20think Zach Cunningham could potentially have some starting reps in the future and be a
- 44:24significant contributor to that linebacker corps. I am feeling a little bit better now
- 44:30in terms of the depth at this position than I did before, because,
- 44:36you know, Nicholas Morrow, I don't know what the heck he was going
- 44:38to really do in terms of his on the field play. So just just
- 44:45wondering what your thoughts were on this. I'm feeling a little bit better about
- 44:47the linebacker position heading into this season, are you as well? I mean,
- 44:52I don't know a ton about Zach Cunningham, but Miles Jack and know
- 44:57the name. I remember when he was drafted by the Jags and what twenty
- 45:00sixteen. Yeah, he was going to be just an all time stopper.
- 45:05Didn't happen, but he's still a good player, very athletic. The linebacking
- 45:09the linebacker positions is just never been important to the Eagles. In my thirty
- 45:15some years being a fan, I've never been in all that concerned with the
- 45:17position. It's always been the D line kind of like helps out the linebackers
- 45:22and as long as they're just as stalwart as they are, that's the That
- 45:28position This year is going to be frightening from everything I've heard about training camp.
- 45:31And I want to ask you some questions because you were there Sunday at
- 45:35the first public practice. Can I just give a shout out there to Davy
- 45:38and Taylor just it warms my heart to hear a third round linebacker didn't work
- 45:44out and they cut them. That goes back to my nineteen eighties nineteen nineties
- 45:50Eagles fandom, where they they would draft a linebacker in the second or third
- 45:52round. He'd be like, finally they care the linebacker position and that guy
- 45:58sucked ass yep, yep, and he was cutting three years yep. It
- 46:01makes me feel really nice inside as a fan. But I mean, their
- 46:07names, their bodies, but they have you know, Miles Jack was just
- 46:10you know what, seven years in league, eight years in league, just
- 46:14played for the Steelers. Wasn't too bad. What else are we going to
- 46:17do at that position, especially with Dean's injuries? Yeah, exactly, I'm
- 46:22good with it. I'm good with these acquisitions. And I think I think
- 46:25these preseason games coming up, we're gonna see these guys a little bit more.
- 46:29These names, Miles Jack, Zach Cunningham, and you know, hopefully
- 46:32Nakobe Dean is going to be good to go. I doubting he's going to
- 46:36be able to really get maybe get into some of these preseason games. Who
- 46:39knows, maybe the last one. But they're gonna need to preserve his health
- 46:43because he is going to be from all indications, he's gonna be wearing that
- 46:46radio out there. He's gonna be calling those defensive plays that are coming in
- 46:51from Seawan to say so, it's gonna be interesting for sure. And like
- 46:54you said, Eric, I was down at the public practice and I'm gonna
- 46:59get into it with OJ Spivey in a bit here, But man, fifty
- 47:02thousand for a practice. Fifty thousand fans for a freaking practice. It was.
- 47:08It was a sight. It really was. Man, it was.
- 47:12It was just amazing electricity in the link and just man, it was.
- 47:17It was a feeling of, you know what, this team is special,
- 47:21and I think we're going to see something else special happen this season. It
- 47:23was really it was really cool. My kids absolutely love going down there.
- 47:28The Unfortunately, the face painting line was just so freaking long. Even they
- 47:31were like, all right, this is ridiculous. Let's go to the seats,
- 47:35let's just watch some stuff. And but it was. It was just
- 47:37an overall great time. Did you see anything in practice or like the practice
- 47:43kind of just like show for the it was a show. It was a
- 47:45show practice. Yeah, well I really do miss you. Tell me you're
- 47:52going down to that really made me miss the times of when they're in Lehigh
- 47:55Valley. Oh and going to see him in the My dad took me my
- 48:00brother what ninety ninety like for three years in a row. We went nice
- 48:05and you basically like you can almost get in the field at getting onto the
- 48:08field as Yeah, it was so cool and like meeting meeting the offensive linemen
- 48:14up close, like in person, and just being like, holy shit,
- 48:17these guys are big. Oh my god, I've got Todd. Yeah,
- 48:21I've got Todd Harriman's autograph on a hat from from yeah, from from Lee
- 48:24High Valley. Yeah. When they were up at Lehigh University, I was
- 48:28able to actually get on the sidelines once and they were doing some autograph stuff
- 48:31on the sidelines and I got Todd Harriman's autograph there, Like you're absolutely right.
- 48:36Lehigh Valley training camp was fantastic. It was phenomenal. It was really
- 48:39up close and personal, and it just it allowed you to feel like you
- 48:44were even that much more part of the team. I remember standing next to
- 48:46Antone Davis and just being like, I'm barely a human, Like I can't
- 48:54imagine, i can't believe what's happening in front of me. Just throw that
- 48:59old name out. But I did see on Twitter the videos of of Kelsey
- 49:05this belly out yes, and some and some very horny moms saying like he's
- 49:10very sexy. There's a lot, Yeah, well he's he's kind of the
- 49:15I mean, he's he's probably the most famous Eagle to like non Eagles fans,
- 49:20I would say, yep, and just I guess because his kids were
- 49:23there properly and just yeah, it seems like you know, the the meme
- 49:29like bonk your horny me. Yeah, I kind of wanted to throw that
- 49:31out there a little bit on Twitter like whoa or x whatever you call it
- 49:35now, like whoa, Okay, he's a married man with two kids,
- 49:37Like let's let's relax, like I know, and it just it was just
- 49:43like like I was belly was that he's so cute but his but oh my
- 49:46goodness, gracious, like is your first football game? They all have tight
- 49:54like a tight pants on. Yes, all right, great way to end
- 50:00up. Body follow Eric on Twitter at Brick Pollitt and gonna let Eric head
- 50:05out here. And we still got some more Eagles talk for you coming up.
- 50:08We're gonna take a quick break. We'll be back in just a bit.
- 50:13All right, we are back now we gotta get to what we were
- 50:15thrown down on the table. We got a great interview more Eagles talk.
- 50:19Let's get to it and now on the table. It is great to have
- 50:24on the podcast for the very first time. He is an award winning sports
- 50:29and culture journalist from the Philadelphia Tribune. I absolutely love following him on the
- 50:35Twitter dot com and just his content is absolutely fantastic all the time. We've
- 50:40got the one and only oj Spivey. How you doing, oj Hi,
- 50:44Jeff, thank you so much for that great introduction first, and I appreciate
- 50:49you having me on your show. Yeah. Absolutely, it is great to
- 50:51finally have you on. I've been wanting to have you on for some time,
- 50:54and I want to thank our good friend of the podcast, Matt Rodgers,
- 50:57for making the connection, and I want I wanted to have you on
- 51:00because your perspective on sports, especially Philly sports, is always so fantastic.
- 51:07Quite frankly, Ojay and I wanted to start off, as we're talking about
- 51:10the Philadelphia Eagles, about the fact that over fifty thousand Eagles fans attended the
- 51:16public practice this past week and it was the only practice, the only public
- 51:21practice, I should say, being offered to the fans this preseason. But
- 51:24man, nothing ever ceases to amaze me with this fan base. The love
- 51:29devotion to this team is always just unwavering, and it did help that they
- 51:35got to the Super Bowl this past season, and they're looking to do it
- 51:37again this year again over fifty thousand strong for a practice here. Oh,
- 51:43Jay, how do you characterize what this symbolizes for the team, for the
- 51:45organization, and especially for the fans. What are your thoughts? Well,
- 51:51first thing, Jeff, I happened to be there that evening as a member
- 51:57of the media, and you know, it was great to see. And
- 52:00I'll tell you that I first noticed that it was something different about this particular
- 52:07practice as opposed to past years because while I was watching the Eagles warm up
- 52:12and you know, do their opening drills before they kicked us off the field
- 52:15for the actual practice, right, But no, that's that's fine. But
- 52:20you know, I happened to look up towards the upper deck and you know,
- 52:23sometimes you know, you're just happened to look up by chance. Not
- 52:27that I was looking for anything, but I noticed, okay, wait a
- 52:30minute, the upper bowl is starting to fill a little bit. I said
- 52:34that to my wife as well, because you were there too, and I
- 52:37said, Hunt, I go look at the upper bowl here. I said,
- 52:38it's starting to fill up. I said, this is incredible exactly.
- 52:43And I was like, okay, this is something different. And you know,
- 52:45and I've been to plenty of open practices, even when they would have
- 52:50multiple throughout the preseason or training camp, and it was definitely something different.
- 52:57And I don't know if it broke a record. We probably had to go
- 52:59back, you know, quite a few years to see. But to see
- 53:01over fifty thousand fans on, you know, to see the Upper Bowl starting
- 53:06to be filled and all that was, that was a pleasant surprise. And
- 53:10to answer your question, Jeff, what it means is it's just excitement.
- 53:15It's overall excitement and as you as you began to categorize it. Of course,
- 53:22going to the Super Bowl helps, but they did go to the Super
- 53:24Bowl and win it back in twenty seventeen, and in twenty eighteen, I
- 53:28don't recall that many people being at the open press, but you know,
- 53:34I just think it's just excitement for the team. And I also think you
- 53:37got someone to, you know, the excitement for the Kelly Green jerseys too.
- 53:40Absolutely, absolutely, yep. And when I was there, you know,
- 53:46I had a couple of friends, uh you know, text me or
- 53:50uh you know, DM me said oh get me a jersey too, I'll
- 53:52figure abouddy get everything. So and I you know, when I go in
- 53:58as a member of the media, sometimes I like to walk through the tailgat.
- 54:02I like to walk through the concourse or the bowl of the stadium,
- 54:07and I just like to I like to get the fan reaction because you know,
- 54:09being a lifelong Philadelphian, I'm a fan too, And of course you
- 54:13have to you have to balance that as a as a journalist, of course,
- 54:19but you know, I like to see a fan reaction. And in
- 54:22fact, you know, we'll talk about this another time another day. I
- 54:24actually worked for the game the staff at one time, you know, but
- 54:29but I guess that's entrenched in me, just seeing a fan reaction. But
- 54:31there's just so much excitement and just going around to the pro shops and you
- 54:36know, of course they have different pro shops. Oh yeah along the stadium,
- 54:40you know, within the stadium, and you couldn't even get up.
- 54:44The lines were packed. They were you know, maybe maybe people just wanted
- 54:47to pay the admission, of course for the for the charitable cause, but
- 54:52maybe they wanted to pay the admission just so they can get their hands for
- 54:54the Kelly greet. Absolutely absolutely, I know, I know I'm going to
- 54:58be getting mine online. I still agotten it. I don't know whether or
- 55:00not it's going to be DeVante Smith or Dallas Goddard. It's gonna be one
- 55:05of those guys they do. I'm leaning towards Davante Smith at this point for
- 55:09Mike Kelly Green Jersey. But yeah, you're absolutely right, Oja. It
- 55:13was a fantastic atmosphere, a great experience overall. I mean, it's a
- 55:16family tradition for us. I take my kids down every year while my wife
- 55:21is there as well. It is a fan friendly and just fun atmosphere for
- 55:24everybody. And really quick, folks, if you're not following oj on Twitter,
- 55:29he is a great, great follow at oj Philly. Give him a
- 55:31follow. You will not be sorry. And Ojay, let's move along here
- 55:36in terms of the team. Here, what we're going to be seeing on
- 55:38the field, and let's start off from a defensive perspective here, because there's
- 55:43some recent acquisitions that I wanted to get into with you. Howie Roseman made
- 55:46a couple of acquisitions to bolster the linebacker position. They finally got rid of
- 55:52Davian Taylor, who just hasn't developed after so many years here and then we're
- 55:57all looking forward to seeing Nakobe Dean and now he's got an ankle injury.
- 56:00So they signed Miles Jack and Zach Cunningham to one year deals. The team
- 56:05also signed in the off season Christian Ellis and Nicholas Morrow. Remains to be
- 56:09seen what they're going to do on the field, especially during the regular season.
- 56:13But how do you see this linebacker core shaping up with these new additions?
- 56:20And also I'm wondering what realistic expectations there are now for Nakobe Dean at
- 56:23this point as he's nursing his injury. This was a position o j that
- 56:28it was one of my top concerns heading into this season. So what are
- 56:30your thoughts on these signings Nakobe Dean, Where this unit goes from here?
- 56:36Well, anytime, Jeff, you have he knew what we see it.
- 56:39As a new linebacking corps, they're always it's going to be some questions.
- 56:45But I am optimistic because of the youth. I am opidistic because of the
- 56:49talent. But you know, there are some concerns. But I'll give Nakobe
- 56:53Dean a lot. Is going to be on the Kobe gin this year.
- 56:57Yep, you know, if he starts with I project him to still be
- 57:00the starter. Uh, come week one, there's gonna be a lot on
- 57:05him because you know, he's going to be the one he has, the
- 57:07one with the with the with the the headset and the SMIT, so he's
- 57:12going to be calling this the signals. But from what I'm told and you
- 57:15know what I've read about him and what a teammates says, his George fellow
- 57:20Georgia teammates have said about him that he's very intelligent, he's very articulate.
- 57:27He's done a lot of calling the signals while he was at Georgia. So
- 57:31that's not my concern. My more my concern is, Okay, let's get
- 57:36him healthy. Let's see what he can do. Is he has, he
- 57:40progresses into this position, you know, he may struggle because again it's this
- 57:46is his first year actually being a start, and a lot is going to
- 57:50be put on him. And you also, uh, you know, we
- 57:53presume that it's going to be a bit of a newer system with showing Decide
- 57:58being the new decels A coordinator. So the whole defense really is learning a
- 58:02new verbiage and learning essentially a new system. But it may still be just
- 58:07similar of what Nick Siriani wants as a defensive philosophy Harry Rosen as well.
- 58:15But I think we should give him a bit of a learning period along with
- 58:21the rest of the team, and even more so because he's essentially going to
- 58:24be a rookie being in that starting inside linebacker position. But my biggest cust
- 58:30start is just from being healthy. Let's see how his need progresses. Let's
- 58:34see if we get to see him on the field, perhaps at some point
- 58:37I don't even want to say a preseason game, but if we can see
- 58:39him on the field during the tail end of training camp and practice, that's
- 58:45going to be a good sign because I do think he's going to start,
- 58:47and I think gonna give him every opportunity because he is talented enough to hold
- 58:52a position. Even though they did pick up cutting hand, they did pick
- 58:55up mouse jack. That's for depth. And then you also look at Patrick
- 58:59Johnson, one of the other linebackers he's hurt to actually saw him get hurt,
- 59:04you know, right in front of us at training campugn suit, So
- 59:07you get the depth issue of them bringing those guys in. But I wouldn't
- 59:09go as far as saying Okay, Nakobe Dean's job is in jeopardy right now.
- 59:15It's it's a great segue into the next topic, oj because depth really
- 59:19is important, not just for this Eagles team, but for every team in
- 59:22the NFL. And I think what's important as we're looking at this Eagles defense
- 59:27and looking at Nakoby Dean, looking at Sewan Desai, I like the fact
- 59:30that they are first year you know, Nakoby's Dean is going to be a
- 59:34first year starting linebacker. Sean Desai his first year with this team, whether
- 59:38it's Jordan Davis or whether it's a Jalen Carter, these quote first year type
- 59:45of guys who are going to be on the field a significant amount. You're
- 59:47gonna be able to really expand upon that relationship with Seawan Desaid. And I
- 59:52think that relationship building is so important to what actually happens on the field is
- 59:57you know it's absolutely but again, injuries will happen with this team throughout the
- 1:00:00course of the season. We hope they're not a lot. But I'd like
- 1:00:06to talk about the week spots perhaps on the team when it comes to death,
- 1:00:08and it might be the linebacker position that we just talked about. I
- 1:00:12mean, who might be some of the most important backups on this team,
- 1:00:15not just from a defensive perspective, even an offensive perspective. If injuries do
- 1:00:20start to happen. Well, if I had to point to a week spot,
- 1:00:27if you will, Jeff, I would say, will be the safety
- 1:00:30position. I'm totally fine with red blanket shit. I really I was really
- 1:00:37impressed how he stepped in last year. When was it Si Garnergott Johnson who
- 1:00:44got who got hurt last year? Okay, yeah, so I was very
- 1:00:47impressed how he stepped in, not only just as far as coverage, as
- 1:00:52far as you know, being a hitter, but coverage as well. So
- 1:00:55I'm impressed with him. I think he's locked in at one of the safe
- 1:00:59positions. It just all depends who's going to be the other the other safety
- 1:01:04alongside him. It's going to be Edmonds, is going to be uh,
- 1:01:07guys, tell me right now. Came round Wallace. I'm not as optimistic
- 1:01:14about him being a starter and everything, but you know, if that's one
- 1:01:17position I had to point to, the linebackers is one thing, but at
- 1:01:22least you know you have a lot of talent there at that position, whether
- 1:01:25it be Nicole Dean uh, and I'm very excited about Nolan Smith. I
- 1:01:30can't wait and you know, go on to record saying that you know he
- 1:01:32wants, he wants, he can't wait to hit the crap out of sometimes.
- 1:01:37But that's as a as a Eagles fan, some of the covers of
- 1:01:42Thieve but everything, you love to hear that Eagles defender, right. But
- 1:01:46yeah, I would just keep eye on the safety position what they decide to
- 1:01:50do there because as much as with all the uh, with all the bus
- 1:01:57arounding senior Gardner Johnson's are sure how it happened contract wise and everything, I
- 1:02:04do think do you miss something with him not being in a lineup, So
- 1:02:07hopefully it's just not a big drop ball. Yep, all right, I
- 1:02:10agree with you completely here and let's move over to the offense. Okay,
- 1:02:15let's talk receivers here, OJ because we know this team is stacked with A
- 1:02:20J. Brown, DeVante Smith, Dallas Goddard and everyone is making some predictions,
- 1:02:25you know, about what's going to happen with this wide receiver corps in
- 1:02:29terms of the depth we were just talking about, and there's one gentleman that's
- 1:02:32getting a lot of buzz and that is one Quas Watkins and what he may
- 1:02:37produce on the field this season. And personally I'm very high on Quaz.
- 1:02:40Maybe I shouldn't be. I don't know, and I think it could.
- 1:02:45I think he could potentially have six hundred and fifty yards season, say maybe
- 1:02:49about five six touchdowns over the course of seventeen games. I do not think
- 1:02:52that is out of the realm of possibility at all with him. And I
- 1:02:58do think based on a what he would probably even consider himself to be a
- 1:03:00disappointing season last year, some key drops throughout the season, key turnovers,
- 1:03:06he's gonna want to improve and he's gonna want to make his mark not just
- 1:03:08on this Eagles team, but in the NFL. What are your thoughts on
- 1:03:13Quas Watkins development and what kind of expectations do you have for Quaz this season?
- 1:03:20Well, I will say this, for one, the Eagles themselves seem
- 1:03:23to be very high on Quiz, seem to believe a lot in him,
- 1:03:29and I think they're going to give him every opportunity to still secure the the
- 1:03:36slot wipery receiver position. They do believe in him and he has a pretty
- 1:03:42good encant. But I will also say that as a Kiss is just as
- 1:03:45good as well. But I do project them both being on a roster.
- 1:03:50I project ze Kiss being on the roster as well because he does give a
- 1:03:54lot of similar qualities that Quas Watkins has not. I don't believe he's as
- 1:04:00tall as Watkins is, but Zakias he might be someone who will step in
- 1:04:06and maybe filling that rule and maybe a Zach Pascal did. Yep. But
- 1:04:10if Watkins doesn't be struggle, I do think Zakias is just ready to step
- 1:04:14in. And of course he's a local guy too. Yeah, I'm having
- 1:04:16going to Saint Jules Fret. I'm along with DeAndre Swift who be acquired as
- 1:04:20well. Yep. All right, Well, we know that Nick Sirianni and
- 1:04:25Jalen Hurts are gonna be you know, we know they're gonna be running the
- 1:04:28shotgun, the RPO based offense again this season, o J. And by
- 1:04:31using Hurts as we know as a runner in this offense, you know,
- 1:04:34they're always finding ways to generate reads, which forces defenses to really think and
- 1:04:40try to react on the fly. And and and it's there are a lot
- 1:04:45of struggles for a lot of defensive teams in the NFL, and I love,
- 1:04:47I just love the split zone lead plays because it's such a numbers advantage
- 1:04:54for this Eagles offense. They work it well, they have honed in on
- 1:04:57that and it produces volts on the field. But I do wonder if NFL
- 1:05:02teams and other defenses are gonna really start figuring this out to an extent.
- 1:05:06Do you have any concerns about that happening, you know, why or why
- 1:05:10not? Uh No, not necessarily, at least not this year. Of
- 1:05:15course, defensive are always are always scheming, always trying to develop the next
- 1:05:20thing. Because I remember early on to stop dating the Hurts, a lot
- 1:05:27of teams tried to institute a spy. And remember, you know, going
- 1:05:31back in the day, speaking of Kelly Greene U in Random Cunningham days,
- 1:05:34he kind of, you know, and directly invented the position of spy.
- 1:05:41Because you know, so many teams, so many defenses, you know,
- 1:05:44the Giants, you know, Washington, Dallas, they all try to you
- 1:05:48know, keep a guy study to watch Random Cunningham is every move and people
- 1:05:53try to do that. We're hurts and it was unsuccessful. But to really
- 1:05:58like dig into your question and Jeff. I think because of the weapons around
- 1:06:02Jalen Hurts, it's it's going to be very difficult to team four teams to
- 1:06:06just hone in on one thing, because if you're holding on Jalen Hurts,
- 1:06:11you're holding on his you know, the RPOs, his running ability and everything.
- 1:06:15He's gonna He's gonna find a J. Brown, He's going to find
- 1:06:17Delandi Smith and to get a new element that I just mentioned, DeAndre Swift,
- 1:06:24if he can stay healthy and coming out of that backfield. It's seems
- 1:06:28to me just from watching training camp that the Eagles are going to be very,
- 1:06:34very meticulous and trying to get DeAndre Swift the ball out of the backfield,
- 1:06:41whether it be screen passes, circle passes, yea, and it that
- 1:06:45just seems to be going to be an integral part of their office this year.
- 1:06:48And I think that's really something that they wanted to do over the past
- 1:06:51couple of years and perhaps might been able to do it with a Miles Sanders.
- 1:06:56But DeAndre Swift is Taylor made for catching the ball out of the backfield,
- 1:07:00and you want to see that. I mean, he even beat them
- 1:07:02last year almost in Detroit the first game of the season Week one of twenty
- 1:07:08twenty two. So I just think it's just going to be very difficult,
- 1:07:11and it's it's why you want to take at least a couple of years for
- 1:07:14defensive to really try to figure out what the Eagles are doing offensively. I
- 1:07:18can't wait to see how this RPO based defense or offense, I'm sorry,
- 1:07:21is going to develop this season, and specifically, again, those split zone
- 1:07:26lead plays. I love watching them. Whatever they whenever we're running them.
- 1:07:30Beautiful to see that really are they really are? Again? Folks. OJ
- 1:07:33Spivey from the Philadelphia Tribune follow them on Twitter at OJ Philly. And are
- 1:07:40you on some other social sites out there where people can follow OJ? Yeah,
- 1:07:44so I'm trying to keep up with everything. I'm also on the same
- 1:07:47name. I'm on Blue Sky. Let's see what else I want. I
- 1:07:51also have a Facebook page two more importantly, which I really put my all
- 1:07:57of my articles on as well. Great, we don't catch and on Twitter.
- 1:08:00You just go to my Facebook page and it's just simply OJ Spivey dast
- 1:08:04to journalists, so you can't follow me there as well. So I put
- 1:08:08my articles up there, different articles as well, so you can also find
- 1:08:13my stuff in detail on Facebook as well. Get it done folks follow OJ
- 1:08:16on the socials out there. Get it done all right. To close us
- 1:08:20out here, OJ talking about the Eagles defense again, kind of getting into
- 1:08:25that because last season, of course, we know they set a team record
- 1:08:29with seventy total sacks and they almost broke the all time sack record last season.
- 1:08:33It was it was fun to watch. They came close, certainly,
- 1:08:35But I'm wondering if they're going to need to do something similar this season to
- 1:08:42remain that dominant force in the NFC and the NFL in general in terms of
- 1:08:46those sacks. In terms of course, we know they're gonna be able to
- 1:08:49get pressure, but do they need to put up seventy sacks or more in
- 1:08:53order to replicate what they did last season? What are your thoughts? I
- 1:08:58don't think so, because seventy sex is really I mean, they set a
- 1:09:01franchise record. Ye, they shatter it, and that says a lot.
- 1:09:05You know, you go back to the game green days of you know,
- 1:09:09Reggie Why, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, all those guys. You know,
- 1:09:13those guys wrecked up a lot of steps too. You go back to
- 1:09:16the Hugh Douglas days and later Trent Cole and even the days you know Flexure
- 1:09:20Cox going to say that, but it's going to be hard to repulicate that,
- 1:09:24just because you know history tells us so. But they don't necessarily have
- 1:09:28to get another seventy sacks. Another fifty five or sixty were by v sufficient
- 1:09:32because you know, it all matters with game situation. You know, when
- 1:09:39do they get those sacks the critical times and when they get those how many
- 1:09:44are those gonna be? Sack fumbles and everything. You probably want to see
- 1:09:46as many sex fumbles as we saw last year with sign Ready leading their charge.
- 1:09:50But you know it's it's kind of c seventy, but I don't think
- 1:09:56it's unrealistic to see fifty five or sixty. All right, sounds good again,
- 1:10:00folks. OJ Spivey the Philadelphia Tribune. OJ was great talking to you
- 1:10:04about this Phillies, Phillies, this Eagles team. I'd love to talk Phillies
- 1:10:09with you at some point as well. Down the ball too, man,
- 1:10:14Yes, any time, Thank you, Jeff, my pleasure, buddy.
- 1:10:17That was a fantastic discussion with OJ. And I'm so excited, folks.
- 1:10:24I'm just so excited. I think all of us in the Eagles Nation are
- 1:10:28so excited for where this team could go this season. And I know that
- 1:10:31an ongoing theme that we've been having on this podcast over the course of several
- 1:10:34weeks now is are we getting too too hyped for it? I don't know.
- 1:10:39I don't think so. I just don't think so, folks. I
- 1:10:42think that the hype is real and for good reason when it comes to this
- 1:10:45Philadelphia Eagles team. And we were talking about that public practice, over fifty
- 1:10:49thousand fans in attendance, the energy that was there, and yes, it
- 1:10:54wasn't the greatest practice for some of the members of this Philadelphia Eagles team.
- 1:10:58You know, we didn't see a lot of fantastic stuff on the field from
- 1:11:01them. You know, it was more of a show that was being put
- 1:11:03on for US fans. But man, it's just the talent on this team,
- 1:11:10and as OJ was talking about, the depth is really incredible. So
- 1:11:14we're gonna keep keep on keeping on here with regard to this Philadelphi Eagles team
- 1:11:18and covering it here on the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show. So that being
- 1:11:23said, folks, thanks so much for taking the time to listen and if
- 1:11:27you're new to the show, give us a follow on Twitter at Philadelphia PST.
