- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyon, and this is episode number three
- 0:20Speaker 1: and four, and today we're back for another one of
- 0:23Speaker 1: our rut Fresh radio episodes in which we are getting
- 0:27Speaker 1: hot off the press intel from all across the country
- 0:30Speaker 1: from different hunters about what's happening in the woods right now.
- 0:44Speaker 1: All right, welcome to the Wired Hunt podcast, brought to
- 0:48Speaker 1: you by Onyx. We are back for another rut fresh
- 0:51Speaker 1: radio episode in which Spencer and I are going to
- 0:55Speaker 1: be talking just a little bit here on the front
- 0:57Speaker 1: end about what's going on in our white tailed world,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and then we'll be chatting with deer hunters all across
- 1:02Speaker 1: the country to find out what is happening, what kind
- 1:05Speaker 1: of activities out there, how are the current conditions impacting
- 1:08Speaker 1: deer movement, what kind of tactics and ideas could be
- 1:11Speaker 1: working right now, and all the above. So, Spencer we
- 1:16Speaker 1: le I should say you you chatted with those folks,
- 1:19Speaker 1: Um do we get some good reason intel? We did,
- 1:22Speaker 1: And this is probably my favorite time of year for
- 1:26Speaker 1: the podcast. Because like, the intel that you get over
- 1:29Speaker 1: these next three weeks is maybe the most valuable. I think,
- 1:34Speaker 1: because although it's fun to hear guys say that activity,
- 1:38Speaker 1: you know, that first week of November is like a
- 1:40Speaker 1: nine out of ten um. You get everything else across
- 1:43Speaker 1: the board from like now October one through kind of
- 1:47Speaker 1: October fifteen, it's it's maybe the least predictable time of year,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and so I think this is maybe when the intel
- 1:54Speaker 1: is the most valuable. UM. And from the guys that
- 1:57Speaker 1: we talked to this week, everybody kind of discussed that
- 2:01Speaker 1: it was poor dear movement this past weekend, but they
- 2:05Speaker 1: are optimistic for really good dear movement this coming weekend,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and that mostly has to do with the approaching cold front.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Most of the Midwest in the Northeast has a large
- 2:14Speaker 1: cold front on the way that looks like it's supposed
- 2:17Speaker 1: to set in on Friday and kind of hang around
- 2:19Speaker 1: through Sunday. And last year mark, if you recall, we
- 2:23Speaker 1: had sort of the same conversation this same exact time
- 2:26Speaker 1: that first weekend of October, and it seemed like, although anecdotal, UH,
- 2:33Speaker 1: people were killing a ton of deer and social media
- 2:35Speaker 1: was lighting up with big bucks that were killed, maybe
- 2:39Speaker 1: at a time that you don't normally expect that. Yeah,
- 2:42Speaker 1: it's true that the cold front. I know you sometimes
- 2:46Speaker 1: are skeptical of it, but and time and time again,
- 2:49Speaker 1: whether it's the placebo effect or real it certainly seems
- 2:54Speaker 1: to help a lot of hunters. But I've got a
- 2:57Speaker 1: hot tip for you tonight. Uh, something a little bit
- 2:59Speaker 1: contrad victory to the usual report about cold fronts. Do
- 3:04Speaker 1: you want to hear the latest and greatest, the very
- 3:07Speaker 1: first update on my two thousand, nineteen Michigan hunting season. Yeah, because,
- 3:12Speaker 1: as we talked about this, today was Michigan's opener, right, Yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 1: Opening day here in Michigan, and a cold front ruined
- 3:22Speaker 1: my first night of hunting season ruined as Spencer, Because
- 3:27Speaker 1: here's the deal, it's opening night. I have hunted Opening
- 3:31Speaker 1: Night in Michigan every single year for years and years
- 3:34Speaker 1: and years, at least I can't remember the last year.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I think I might have missed Opening Day when I
- 3:39Speaker 1: was working in California just out of college, but since then,
- 3:43Speaker 1: so at least the last ten years, I've hunted Opening
- 3:45Speaker 1: Night every single time. I think, I think I know
- 3:47Speaker 1: where this is going, don't steal my thunder, Spencer, don't
- 3:52Speaker 1: steal my thunder. I saw the forecast, and I saw
- 3:56Speaker 1: that opening day it was going to be hot, hot,
- 3:59Speaker 1: hot hot, superhumid, muggy, crappy. It's like mid eighties really
- 4:05Speaker 1: warm today and then tomorrow though, by the time the
- 4:10Speaker 1: evening time rolls around, it's gonna be more than twenty
- 4:14Speaker 1: degrees cooler by tomorrow night. And I thought to myself, Wow,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I can hunt the first night like I usually do,
- 4:22Speaker 1: but I'm not feeling very good about that really warm
- 4:26Speaker 1: weather and the next day and the following couple of
- 4:28Speaker 1: days after that are gonna be so great with his
- 4:30Speaker 1: cold front running through. I don't have any kind of
- 4:32Speaker 1: really great recent intel that tells me that the buck
- 4:35Speaker 1: I'm after on my main farm is moving in daylight yet,
- 4:38Speaker 1: So why don't I watch? Why don't for the first
- 4:41Speaker 1: night ever? I'm just gonna sit back and observe opening night.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna scout, I'm gonna get better informed, and then
- 4:47Speaker 1: with a cold front coming through, I will sneak in
- 4:51Speaker 1: hunt one of my better spots the first you know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: October two and third. That was my game plan going
- 4:56Speaker 1: to this. Okay, and did this warm weather, just save
- 5:00Speaker 1: a deer's life. So there's a there's one deer, and
- 5:05Speaker 1: there's one dear only spencer that I'm interested in killing
- 5:08Speaker 1: on my main Michigan property. That's a buck I called Tran.
- 5:12Speaker 1: He's a buck I passed on last year. He is
- 5:15Speaker 1: a buck that showed back up this summer. Just an
- 5:18Speaker 1: absolute stud four year old, really tall, tight mega eight pointer.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Just like I'm smitten, absolutely smitten with this deer so
- 5:28Speaker 1: badly want to see him. I had a bunch of
- 5:30Speaker 1: encounters with the last year, lots of intel on him.
- 5:34Speaker 1: UM just excited to hunt him this year. So I
- 5:39Speaker 1: got set up near the road on a hillside where
- 5:41Speaker 1: I could look way down this property down a power
- 5:44Speaker 1: line where I can see two different little food plots
- 5:47Speaker 1: I have planted, and several different areas were deer crossed
- 5:51Speaker 1: between two chunks of timber. So I thought, all right,
- 5:54Speaker 1: this will allow me to see all the way to
- 5:55Speaker 1: the back and the back of the farmers where this
- 5:57Speaker 1: deer usually is the most active. UM, so I can
- 6:01Speaker 1: see that. Even though it's warm and I wasn't really
- 6:04Speaker 1: expecting to see much, I thought, well, I'll just observe
- 6:06Speaker 1: see what's going to happen. Maybe he'll step out at
- 6:09Speaker 1: last light way in the back. At least i'll know
- 6:12Speaker 1: when that cold front comes by tomorrow night that backspots,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you know, the spot to be well fast forward is
- 6:18Speaker 1: the evening progress as I see some dos, more doughs,
- 6:21Speaker 1: more doughs, more doughs, gets just about last light, and
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm about to pack it in and head out, and
- 6:28Speaker 1: I see a big body in the front, and I
- 6:32Speaker 1: pulled my binoculars, and I pulled up my spotting scope,
- 6:36Speaker 1: and outsteps Tran and he walks within ten yards of
- 6:40Speaker 1: the stand that I've hunted an opening night the last
- 6:43Speaker 1: three years, walked right by the spot I would have
- 6:46Speaker 1: hunted tonight if I was gonna hunt just I mean,
- 6:49Speaker 1: just as pretty as you could ever ask for. Sat there,
- 6:51Speaker 1: feeding on some clover, puts them around with at least
- 6:55Speaker 1: five minutes, maybe ten lent two ventsus shooting light left
- 7:00Speaker 1: um and I was sitting two fifty yards away watching
- 7:05Speaker 1: and a tiny part of my soul died to night Spencer.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Have you ever killed a deer on opening night? That's
- 7:11Speaker 1: that's one question. Another question is how confident are you
- 7:15Speaker 1: that he's going to be there one of these next
- 7:17Speaker 1: like three days. And then the other question is is
- 7:20Speaker 1: the wind going to participate for you to go kill
- 7:25Speaker 1: that deer? Yeah? So question number one, have I ever
- 7:28Speaker 1: killed an Opening night buck? Yes? I actually killed an
- 7:31Speaker 1: Opening night buck four or five years ago from this
- 7:35Speaker 1: exact tree stand that trand walked by tonight. It's like,
- 7:39Speaker 1: my it's my favorite little spot for Opening Night because
- 7:41Speaker 1: it's a great early season food sources tight to good betting.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I can get into it pretty easily without blowing up
- 7:47Speaker 1: the farm. It's it's near the front of the property,
- 7:50Speaker 1: but it's it's good even though it's low impact. So
- 7:52Speaker 1: it's just a really nice balance. Um. So I've hunted
- 7:55Speaker 1: an Opening Night quite a few nights. Um killed a
- 7:57Speaker 1: buck a few years ago. I saw hold field one year,
- 8:00Speaker 1: another year, so it's it's a high odd spot. But
- 8:05Speaker 1: but you know, tonight decided to save it, save it
- 8:07Speaker 1: one day. And so that leads me to question number two,
- 8:10Speaker 1: which is will the will the wind work right? That's
- 8:14Speaker 1: what you're gonna ask um and tonight, Now, this is
- 8:18Speaker 1: the only thing that makes me feel slightly better about
- 8:20Speaker 1: the situation. Tonight, we had like a west southwest wind,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and if I had hunted that tree tonight based off
- 8:28Speaker 1: the direction he came from. He came from the south,
- 8:32Speaker 1: or at least he entered the He entered my line
- 8:35Speaker 1: of sight south of that tree stand, so I might
- 8:37Speaker 1: have got away with it, but without west southwest wind.
- 8:41Speaker 1: If he was coming from the west and south, he
- 8:44Speaker 1: and based off of my previous year's worth of intel
- 8:46Speaker 1: with him, I think he beds pretty far to the
- 8:49Speaker 1: east and south of this tree stand, so I think
- 8:52Speaker 1: he would have had to be moving into that wind
- 8:55Speaker 1: unless he unless he came from due south, I don't know,
- 9:00Speaker 1: but it was There could have been a chance that
- 9:01Speaker 1: if I sat there tonight, he would have winded me,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and maybe he wouldn't have actually showed up there at all.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Now the good news is I saw him tonight. I
- 9:11Speaker 1: saw him come out to that food source in daylight,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and because of that, it changes what my plan would
- 9:17Speaker 1: have been for tomorrow's hunt. Otherwise, I was thinking I
- 9:19Speaker 1: was going to have to hunt near the back of
- 9:20Speaker 1: the farm, and I thought, because he had been in
- 9:23Speaker 1: the backs quite so often last year and conditions look good,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I was going to push back there and try hunt
- 9:29Speaker 1: for him. But now he's in the front and I've
- 9:32Speaker 1: got the perfect wind for the front of the farm
- 9:34Speaker 1: tomorrow perfect so it's still northerly ish, um, which would
- 9:42Speaker 1: give him what was it win today? It say it
- 9:45Speaker 1: was west west, it was west southwest, I think, so
- 9:48Speaker 1: tomorrow's a little more easterly, so so he maybe he
- 9:51Speaker 1: won't come out because the wind is not as much
- 9:52Speaker 1: in his favor. But the wind is better for me tomorrow,
- 9:54Speaker 1: I guess. So that'll be interesting to see if he
- 9:57Speaker 1: moved the way he did because the wind was working
- 10:00Speaker 1: for him, and if tomorrow the wind is not going
- 10:02Speaker 1: to be as much unfair, he'll steal based off where
- 10:05Speaker 1: he is. He'll still have a northerly ish wind which
- 10:07Speaker 1: will be into his face from where I typically think
- 10:09Speaker 1: he beds um. So I'm not sure what will happen.
- 10:13Speaker 1: But he didn't get pressured right, I saw him moving
- 10:17Speaker 1: comfortably tonight. Um. I snuck out of there without spooking
- 10:20Speaker 1: any deer, So I feel confident that with a good
- 10:23Speaker 1: wind where I do not think I'll get winded, I
- 10:25Speaker 1: know I can get in there without spooking deer. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: know it's a hot food source, and I know that
- 10:29Speaker 1: tomorrow evening it will well tonight it was in the
- 10:32Speaker 1: mid eighties. Tomorrow evening it's gonna be like high fifties,
- 10:35Speaker 1: low sixties by the time that prime time gets there,
- 10:38Speaker 1: so and it's gonna be lightly raining throughout the day
- 10:40Speaker 1: and just petering out during primetime, So it should be
- 10:44Speaker 1: a dynamite sit um. So I'm very excited, like frustrating that,
- 10:49Speaker 1: a little frustrated by tonight that I wasn't able to
- 10:52Speaker 1: be sitting there when he walked by, but also very
- 10:56Speaker 1: excited for tomorrow, Like this is one of those nights
- 10:58Speaker 1: where I'm gonna be sitting up texting my buddies all night,
- 11:01Speaker 1: looking at maps, thinking about tomorrow. Tomorrow is gonna be that.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Do you ever have those days? I have these every year.
- 11:08Speaker 1: We're just the conditions seem perfect. You feel like you're
- 11:11Speaker 1: going in for a kill set, like you're just kind
- 11:14Speaker 1: of tingly all day with anticipation. I have that now,
- 11:18Speaker 1: and there's nothing I enjoy more during hunting season when
- 11:22Speaker 1: you are leading up to one of those kill knights
- 11:24Speaker 1: where it just feels like this should happen. Well, I
- 11:28Speaker 1: like that you're calling your shot, but yeah, like the
- 11:30Speaker 1: feeling that you're describing, that's pretty rare for October. Second,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I think so like, I like where you're at because
- 11:38Speaker 1: I don't know your schedule or when you leave from Minnesota,
- 11:41Speaker 1: but just maybe not much that's stopping you from like
- 11:44Speaker 1: hunting this spot when the conditions are right, like while
- 11:47Speaker 1: he's still on this pattern. So it seems like it's
- 11:49Speaker 1: gonna work out. You know. I don't want to go
- 11:52Speaker 1: as far as to say that I'm gonna cross all
- 11:53Speaker 1: my fingers and toes on a knock on wood because
- 11:56Speaker 1: you know, right the odds are probably that he won't
- 11:59Speaker 1: show up again. But I feel better today than I
- 12:03Speaker 1: would have this morning. You know, now that I know
- 12:06Speaker 1: he was there, there's a good chance he might be
- 12:08Speaker 1: back again. I hadn't gotten pictures or seen him since
- 12:11Speaker 1: September four before this, and that was the day of
- 12:15Speaker 1: I think that was the day before our youth season
- 12:18Speaker 1: in Michigan, so I didn't even know if he made
- 12:20Speaker 1: it for youth season. So now I know at least
- 12:22Speaker 1: he made it to opening day. He's still here. He
- 12:24Speaker 1: was moving in daylight and on a hot day, So
- 12:27Speaker 1: that makes me think that dang, once we get a
- 12:29Speaker 1: good cold day tomorrow and the next day, um, it
- 12:33Speaker 1: sure feels good. So if nothing else, I'll be going
- 12:35Speaker 1: into a confident and excited and that's that's a good
- 12:38Speaker 1: thing on So is there anything that like threatens to
- 12:41Speaker 1: push him off his pattern? In the Midwest this time
- 12:44Speaker 1: of year, there's a lot of things that can kind
- 12:46Speaker 1: of cause the deck to be reshuffled, like, uh, some
- 12:49Speaker 1: kind of crop being harvested, or some sort of other
- 12:52Speaker 1: season opening. If you hunt in a wet area in
- 12:55Speaker 1: duck season opens, or if you hunt in a CRP
- 12:58Speaker 1: area or like an upland season opens, those things can
- 13:02Speaker 1: kind of reshuffle the deck. Is there anything like that
- 13:04Speaker 1: that threatens this buck from changing what he's doing? I
- 13:08Speaker 1: don't think he's necessary. I wouldn't go so far as
- 13:11Speaker 1: to think that he's on like a hard pattern, right
- 13:13Speaker 1: because I've been able to watch this little area a
- 13:16Speaker 1: decent amount over the last couple of weeks, and this
- 13:18Speaker 1: is the first time I've seen him come back out there.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Um Like, I saw him in this general area a
- 13:23Speaker 1: couple of times during the summer, gotten a handful of
- 13:26Speaker 1: pictures of him at the back of the farm, and now,
- 13:29Speaker 1: for the first time in weeks, I saw him back
- 13:32Speaker 1: at the front. So I'm not gonna go and be
- 13:35Speaker 1: so confident to think that this he's gonna keep doing
- 13:37Speaker 1: this over and over. I think there's a decent chance
- 13:39Speaker 1: he might do it again tomorrow simply because he did tonight.
- 13:42Speaker 1: But you know, he just as well could be back
- 13:44Speaker 1: on the back of the farm somewhere too. I think
- 13:47Speaker 1: crops could be harvested. Uh. You know, the beans are
- 13:50Speaker 1: still not fully dry down on this property, so I
- 13:53Speaker 1: don't expect that to happen anytime soon. The corn's got
- 13:56Speaker 1: a long ways to go, so that won't be anything
- 13:58Speaker 1: that will impact me, probably hill November. Um. You know,
- 14:03Speaker 1: if acorns are going to be an impact and impacting issue,
- 14:06Speaker 1: they would be already. I know there's make corns hitting
- 14:08Speaker 1: the ground around here. I'm sure he's feeding on those
- 14:10Speaker 1: at times. But you know he's he's gonna hit the
- 14:14Speaker 1: ice cream on occasion. So I can hunt the edge
- 14:16Speaker 1: of these corn fields he can hunt. I can hunt
- 14:19Speaker 1: these couple of little small food plots of green food
- 14:21Speaker 1: sources that I know he's going to hit on occasion. Um,
- 14:24Speaker 1: And so I'm just gonna play safe, hit the edges
- 14:26Speaker 1: of things a couple of times here early while the
- 14:29Speaker 1: conditions are good and then I'll be out and I've
- 14:31Speaker 1: got that Minnesota hunt, and I've got other hunts going on,
- 14:33Speaker 1: and be hunting the back forty um and then we'll
- 14:35Speaker 1: get back after him and late October and hopefully the
- 14:38Speaker 1: testosteron will be picking up. We'll hopefully he'll be dead
- 14:40Speaker 1: tomorrow night, but if not, then I'll be thinking late
- 14:43Speaker 1: October and or if a big coal front comes through
- 14:45Speaker 1: or something. So the cold front theme that we'll be
- 14:49Speaker 1: talked about by all the guests is definitely on my mind.
- 14:51Speaker 1: It's definitely um already impacted my season. Hopefully it'll influence
- 14:56Speaker 1: it for good here in the next day or two
- 14:58Speaker 1: as I'm gonna get a little bit more aggressive than
- 15:01Speaker 1: maybe I do in past years. I'll hunt the front,
- 15:03Speaker 1: but I might push into the back the day after
- 15:05Speaker 1: that or the day after that, depending on what I
- 15:06Speaker 1: see and how things go. So I'm gonna try to
- 15:09Speaker 1: take advantage of this weather. Well. Besides your report from Michigan,
- 15:12Speaker 1: we also hear from Byron Horton from White Tail Experience
- 15:14Speaker 1: in Ohio, and then John Armand in North Dakota from
- 15:18Speaker 1: Ultimate Outdoor Adventures TV, and then we talked to josh
- 15:21Speaker 1: Ganthony from cut four Outdoors in North Carolina, and then
- 15:23Speaker 1: we go to Nebraska and t talk to Bryce Lambley. Well,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I can tell your sweating already that I've been blabbering
- 15:30Speaker 1: on for fifteen minutes cutting into the normal nice, short
- 15:33Speaker 1: and sweet Spencer podcasts. So should we get to the interviews. Yes,
- 15:37Speaker 1: we'll talk to you next week. Mark, all right, I'm
- 15:39Speaker 1: gonna do my best to have good news before we
- 15:41Speaker 1: move on, though, I want to tell you about all
- 15:43Speaker 1: the new content over at the meat Eater dot com
- 15:46Speaker 1: that's available right now. If you head over there, you're
- 15:49Speaker 1: gonna find episode one of The Back Forty where Mark
- 15:53Speaker 1: and Steve investigate Mark's new Michigan property. And you're also
- 15:57Speaker 1: gonna find episode three of How to Kill a Buck,
- 16:01Speaker 1: where Mark, Tony Peterson, and I break down early October
- 16:05Speaker 1: tactics and also look at the Back forty property in
- 16:08Speaker 1: Michigan and eat scout that property talking about how we
- 16:11Speaker 1: would approach hunting that ground this time of year. While
- 16:15Speaker 1: you're there, sign up for our new white Tail weekly
- 16:17Speaker 1: news letter. It has our latest and greatest white Tail
- 16:20Speaker 1: content from Mark and I comes out on Mondays and
- 16:23Speaker 1: it will be hitting your inbox every single week. All
- 16:26Speaker 1: right Enjoining us on the line now is Byron Hornton
- 16:28Speaker 1: from the white Tail Experience in Ohio. Now Byron in Ohio,
- 16:32Speaker 1: what would you say the bucket activity has been lately
- 16:34Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. Oh I gotta
- 16:37Speaker 1: go with a two out of ten here. This last
- 16:39Speaker 1: week we've had major warren temperatures and that is just
- 16:43Speaker 1: not working for us. Have you seen any signmaking start
- 16:46Speaker 1: to show up yet in Ohio? Yeah, I would say
- 16:50Speaker 1: at least from the scouting. I did a lot of
- 16:52Speaker 1: a lot of scouting. I feel like, uh this past
- 16:54Speaker 1: weekend and noticed like in certain areas is that that
- 16:58Speaker 1: there is a concentration a buck sign and then there's
- 17:01Speaker 1: gaps where there is no concentration of buck sign. I
- 17:04Speaker 1: think the key is now finding those those areas. I
- 17:07Speaker 1: do this like seven rubs within a fifty yard area
- 17:11Speaker 1: right on the edge of this betting area, and then
- 17:13Speaker 1: walked for the next half mile and it came across
- 17:16Speaker 1: zero buck sign. So I definitely think if you can
- 17:19Speaker 1: find it, that's that's where they're they're holding up at
- 17:21Speaker 1: this time of year. What is your scouting strategy when
- 17:25Speaker 1: you're in season like this? So if it's a morning
- 17:29Speaker 1: hunt and the sun comes up, and I have zero
- 17:32Speaker 1: confidence I am getting down the first forty five minutes
- 17:34Speaker 1: or or an hour. I'm not gonna wait. Um. Generally
- 17:37Speaker 1: I go into two pre scouted betting type areas. Um
- 17:41Speaker 1: that is that I've scouted in the winter. But then
- 17:43Speaker 1: it is it is covering ground and kind of I've
- 17:46Speaker 1: used on X and marked uh known betting areas and
- 17:49Speaker 1: so that gives me like a blueprint. So I am
- 17:51Speaker 1: just trying to get toe in and around them, um
- 17:56Speaker 1: at a distance, but pick up buck signed that might
- 17:58Speaker 1: be leading back some of these bed areas, uh, some
- 18:01Speaker 1: of these oh kind of second tier spots on the
- 18:04Speaker 1: public land that all I need is to know a
- 18:06Speaker 1: good track or a couple of good rubs leading one
- 18:10Speaker 1: and hopefully I can then dive in and make the
- 18:12Speaker 1: game playing on and figure out what's going on in there.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Do you find it difficult to avoid public land pressure
- 18:18Speaker 1: on opening weekend? Oh? Yeah, Saturday morning? In fact, we
- 18:23Speaker 1: uh we we're not alone in the parking lot and
- 18:26Speaker 1: uh pulled in kind of had to make a judgment
- 18:28Speaker 1: call on me if I stuff these guys were oh
- 18:32Speaker 1: dicky mos or or legit guys and they had no stands,
- 18:35Speaker 1: there's no headlands, So it was more of I'm not
- 18:38Speaker 1: worried about these guys going very far doing anything really
- 18:41Speaker 1: to kill a big buck in this area. So I
- 18:44Speaker 1: stayed state point and went hunt at that same piece.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And um, it is something that we definitely know and
- 18:50Speaker 1: you know, the squirrel blasters or something you gotta take
- 18:52Speaker 1: account for here on the public pieces, avoiding stuff like hickory,
- 18:56Speaker 1: gros and and walnuts. Um, those guys tend to be
- 18:59Speaker 1: in the as areas and and they'll they'll hike just
- 19:02Speaker 1: as far as you because all they gotta do is
- 19:03Speaker 1: carry At twenty two, what food source are you concerned
- 19:07Speaker 1: with this time of year? Have have acorns started hitting
- 19:09Speaker 1: the ground yet? Yeah? And here it's it's it's all.
- 19:14Speaker 1: The acorn crop isn't isn't as big as what it
- 19:17Speaker 1: has in the last two to three years. So to me,
- 19:19Speaker 1: that's good. I mean, if you can find the white
- 19:22Speaker 1: oak this dropping, it's it's it's uh the money source.
- 19:26Speaker 1: I also see a decent amount of like meadows and
- 19:30Speaker 1: prows being like a popular item since all the beans
- 19:32Speaker 1: are turned and are pretty much dry at this point.
- 19:35Speaker 1: You mentioned before that the hot weather made for really
- 19:38Speaker 1: poor dear movement. Does that mean you're getting really aggressive
- 19:41Speaker 1: when we do get those cold fronts this early in
- 19:43Speaker 1: the season. Yeah. Yeah, I kind of have the philosophy,
- 19:47Speaker 1: oh that if you leave a buck's in there, you
- 19:51Speaker 1: know that at least on the public, you're gonna be
- 19:53Speaker 1: fighting other hunters. So if it's a cold front, why
- 19:56Speaker 1: not get aggressive? And then I also have the philosophy that, oh,
- 19:59Speaker 1: my in season scouting, I can go find another buck
- 20:02Speaker 1: that kind of hits what I'm looking for out there.
- 20:05Speaker 1: It's a long so if I if I bugg or
- 20:07Speaker 1: something up, I'm not just solely chasing one deer. I
- 20:10Speaker 1: think at least with where I'm at and what I'm doing,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I'm not chasing that one particular giant. As someone who
- 20:16Speaker 1: mostly does mobile setups, is there anything with your mobile
- 20:20Speaker 1: setup that changes between now and the RUT? Yeah? I
- 20:23Speaker 1: would say right now, I'm actually taking four Mini six
- 20:27Speaker 1: because I'm not you know, with with canopy coverage, I'm
- 20:29Speaker 1: not getting up as high. Um, I'm also not hunting
- 20:32Speaker 1: the big woods, so I'm not taking the full length
- 20:35Speaker 1: six at this point in time. And then uh, as
- 20:38Speaker 1: far as packing in, I don't have to bring any layers.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I just have to bring my camera gear and just
- 20:43Speaker 1: a few minimalist things. So running gun hunting, I feel
- 20:46Speaker 1: like in October is is definitely just easier. You you're
- 20:49Speaker 1: less bulky and and you have just less items going forward.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Then in a six week or so, what do you
- 20:54Speaker 1: think that bucket activity is going to be on the
- 20:56Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in Ohio? I really think
- 21:00Speaker 1: we've got this first cold front twenty degree tient drops
- 21:03Speaker 1: coming Friday, some systems pushing through, and it's gonna stay
- 21:06Speaker 1: cold for a couple of days. Um, I'm gonna go
- 21:09Speaker 1: ahead and give it an eight. I truly think if
- 21:11Speaker 1: you're gonna kill an early season buck um, this is this.
- 21:14Speaker 1: We'll see some big bucks here in Ohio hit the
- 21:16Speaker 1: ground this weekend. I like your optimism. Thanks for your time,
- 21:20Speaker 1: buying a good luck, absolutely, Spencer, thanks for having me
- 21:23Speaker 1: on alright, enjoying us on the line. Next is John
- 21:26Speaker 1: Armand in North Dakota from Ultimate Outdoor Adventures TV. Now
- 21:30Speaker 1: John in North Dakota. What would you say the bucket
- 21:32Speaker 1: activities been lately on the scale of one to ten?
- 21:34Speaker 1: I would say probably about a six. We were earlier,
- 21:38Speaker 1: I would say an eight, but we kind of slowed
- 21:40Speaker 1: down with some of the moisture coming through. Now, moisture
- 21:43Speaker 1: has kind of been a theme for the great planes
- 21:45Speaker 1: this summer in this fall. How has that affected dear
- 21:47Speaker 1: movement this season in North Dakota. Well, there's been you know,
- 21:51Speaker 1: for us getting out on the weekends, it seems like
- 21:53Speaker 1: every weekend we're getting trench or downpours. Um. I think
- 21:57Speaker 1: beer no different than we are. They don't mind the rain,
- 22:00Speaker 1: but when it's blowing thirty miles an hour and the
- 22:03Speaker 1: winds and rain is going sideways, they kind of hold up.
- 22:06Speaker 1: So Um. We've had a few weekends where the movement
- 22:10Speaker 1: has been slower, but once the weather you know, breaks,
- 22:13Speaker 1: the movement has been actually really really good this year
- 22:16Speaker 1: for us. How about the rain that we had this summer.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Has that effected anything as far as is it's going
- 22:21Speaker 1: to be a late harvest in North Dakota and how
- 22:23Speaker 1: will that change things? It is that it's gonna be
- 22:26Speaker 1: one of those It's gonna it could change a lot
- 22:28Speaker 1: of things, especially for rifle season. I think there's gonna
- 22:31Speaker 1: be a lot of crops that are still um left
- 22:35Speaker 1: um right now. We're seeing small greens. I think a
- 22:38Speaker 1: lot of them haven't been taken off and they're probably
- 22:41Speaker 1: not even going to get them off because they're ruined
- 22:43Speaker 1: right now. Um starting to see you know, soy beans
- 22:46Speaker 1: are starting to turn, but there's still a lot of
- 22:48Speaker 1: them that are still growing and still green. Um. You know,
- 22:51Speaker 1: the moisture has been kind of a blessing and occur
- 22:54Speaker 1: so I'm one that I would much rather hunt a
- 22:57Speaker 1: dry condition than the wet condition. And this year where
- 23:00Speaker 1: as wet as we've ever met. You talked about the
- 23:02Speaker 1: soybeans still being green there. Does that mean that's your
- 23:05Speaker 1: focus right now for food sources? It is. We have
- 23:08Speaker 1: a couple of fields that we're put in at different times,
- 23:12Speaker 1: and the ones that have matured and they're turning brown
- 23:16Speaker 1: don't have a lot of activity, and the one that
- 23:18Speaker 1: are green and have have all of it diering right now.
- 23:21Speaker 1: So we're still still hunting soybeans and hoping to knock
- 23:24Speaker 1: down a deer. We've we've we've gotten a couple of
- 23:26Speaker 1: opportunities early and we didn't capitalize, but we're hoping to
- 23:31Speaker 1: make something happen in the next week. Have you seen
- 23:33Speaker 1: any signmaking start to show up yet. Yes, you know,
- 23:37Speaker 1: I was just down checking pool cards the other day
- 23:39Speaker 1: and a lot of the rub lines, the scrape lines,
- 23:43Speaker 1: you know, you're starting to see a lot more activity,
- 23:46Speaker 1: you know, where they were just kind of you know,
- 23:48Speaker 1: paught up a little bit. Now they're starting to get
- 23:50Speaker 1: after them. Started some mock scrapes that are getting hit
- 23:54Speaker 1: really hard. So I think, you know, things are starting
- 23:57Speaker 1: to crank up a little bit. How concerned are you
- 23:59Speaker 1: with moon phases in early and mid October? You know,
- 24:03Speaker 1: I'm one of those guys that I get that I
- 24:05Speaker 1: only get to hunt so many days, so I hunt
- 24:07Speaker 1: no matter what. But there's definitely a difference. And you know,
- 24:11Speaker 1: this year, when we the opening weekend, the moon phase
- 24:14Speaker 1: seem to be perfect. And that's what I'm hoping for
- 24:17Speaker 1: in the next week. I think it's going to follow
- 24:19Speaker 1: the same pattern, um like the moon always does, and
- 24:21Speaker 1: you're gonna start to see that activity because to me,
- 24:24Speaker 1: there's that three or four days out of the month
- 24:27Speaker 1: that the movement is just crazy, and I'm hoping that's
- 24:30Speaker 1: going to happen. Uh And the next rself, what's your
- 24:33Speaker 1: strategy this time of year for hunting those deer that
- 24:36Speaker 1: like to bed out in the egg fields. We're you know,
- 24:40Speaker 1: we kind of know different. We hunt um the edges
- 24:43Speaker 1: of our coolies and the edges of the egg field,
- 24:48Speaker 1: so we try to get them coming out, trying to
- 24:50Speaker 1: pattern them. You know, most of the time they're going
- 24:53Speaker 1: to come out from the corn fields because they're not
- 24:55Speaker 1: really feeding in the corn fields, going to come out
- 24:57Speaker 1: hit the alfall fulfilled at the smybeans. So if we
- 25:00Speaker 1: can see that they're betting in those fields, those cornfields,
- 25:03Speaker 1: we'll try to set up, you know, and in the
- 25:06Speaker 1: way and kind of get lucky and hopefully have one
- 25:09Speaker 1: um walk bias going forward. Then in the next week
- 25:13Speaker 1: or so, what do you think that bucket activity is
- 25:15Speaker 1: going to be on a scale of one to ten
- 25:16Speaker 1: in North Dakota. Well, if it follows the suit that
- 25:19Speaker 1: we had opening weekend, we're coming around the same moon
- 25:22Speaker 1: phase and things like that, it should be excellent. Because
- 25:24Speaker 1: our our movement this year has been really really good,
- 25:27Speaker 1: almost crazy. It seems like the deer have been out
- 25:30Speaker 1: in the field earlier and I've been staying out longer.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So we're we're hoping for a ten out of tenna
- 25:36Speaker 1: the next week. Our John Well Good luck to you
- 25:38Speaker 1: and everyone else from Ultimate Outdoor Ventures TeV. Thanks for
- 25:41Speaker 1: joining me all right, buddy, thank you very much, and
- 25:43Speaker 1: good luck to you guys alright and enjoining us on
- 25:46Speaker 1: the line. Next is Josh Genty in North Carolina from
- 25:49Speaker 1: Cut four Outdoors. Now, Josh in North Carolina, what would
- 25:52Speaker 1: you say the buck activity has been lately? On a
- 25:54Speaker 1: scale of one to ten, I'd probably have to give
- 25:58Speaker 1: it probably four, maybe a three just with all the
- 26:02Speaker 1: heat it went again. I mean, we don't really haven't
- 26:05Speaker 1: been on their feet a whole lot um. They just
- 26:07Speaker 1: kind of kind of like that summer pattern where they
- 26:10Speaker 1: don't want to be far from the three, but they
- 26:11Speaker 1: ain't getting up until they absolutely have to. So probably
- 26:15Speaker 1: give him a sore on that one that Josh, you
- 26:18Speaker 1: just tagged a buck about a week ago in North Carolina.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Tell us about that set up. Well, I had my
- 26:24Speaker 1: Number one saying that I had been watching all some mean, uh,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I knew that's the tray I wanted to be in,
- 26:29Speaker 1: and opening day, which was probably two weeks before, I
- 26:34Speaker 1: noticed all the doing coming out on the other side
- 26:36Speaker 1: of the field. Which it's kind of odd considering all
- 26:38Speaker 1: the scout and I've done everything. A couple of weeks later,
- 26:41Speaker 1: the same patterns continued, so I just took a climber.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Whenever they're got in there kind of room had to
- 26:46Speaker 1: set up where I know they wanted the stage in
- 26:48Speaker 1: this other corner of the field, and they always worked
- 26:50Speaker 1: their way down. The food of this acorn had just
- 26:53Speaker 1: started dropping maybe a week before, and that's how I felt,
- 26:57Speaker 1: they're just waiting and what a who was the second
- 27:01Speaker 1: dud that came out? I mean there was a sport
- 27:03Speaker 1: before corn that came out and he was out behind it,
- 27:06Speaker 1: which was kind of weird because it was real early.
- 27:08Speaker 1: It's probably six o'clock when he came out. It just
- 27:10Speaker 1: kind of caught me off good just to see him
- 27:12Speaker 1: out that early and just kind of leave that. We
- 27:14Speaker 1: made you touch on that the acorn that just started
- 27:16Speaker 1: falling in North Carolina? What is that a corn crop?
- 27:19Speaker 1: And like this year it's honestly, I've I've never seen
- 27:23Speaker 1: this many falls. Um. You know, usually you know, you
- 27:27Speaker 1: can always tell when the white oaks and still start falling,
- 27:29Speaker 1: you can sell it they started migrating to that. But
- 27:32Speaker 1: I mean oak trees that I haven't even noticed that
- 27:36Speaker 1: they are honestly like they just never dropped until now.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I mean that's playing a huge role, especially this past week,
- 27:43Speaker 1: because now it's it's almost like they don't even want
- 27:46Speaker 1: to stage up anymore. It's like they've made their mind
- 27:48Speaker 1: up where they want to get, where they want to
- 27:49Speaker 1: be every evening or every night, like they're just that
- 27:53Speaker 1: they're determined to get to that oak tree light evenings
- 27:55Speaker 1: and stuff like that. So how does that change your
- 27:58Speaker 1: strategy for hunting to lead to mid October? When there's
- 28:01Speaker 1: so many acorns on the ground. Nicely, I couldn't use
- 28:04Speaker 1: it the same way that scouting, So then I couldn't
- 28:06Speaker 1: rely do more observation sits and kind of figure out
- 28:10Speaker 1: what's fine the field they want to be they want
- 28:12Speaker 1: to come out, and then golf of that, figure out
- 28:15Speaker 1: what acorn tree they want to be near, and then
- 28:18Speaker 1: just kind of want my way back through there trying
- 28:20Speaker 1: to find you have more of the community trails and
- 28:23Speaker 1: stuff like that. So I'm trying to figure out where
- 28:25Speaker 1: I'm catching the daylight. Now, have you noticed any signmaking
- 28:28Speaker 1: start to show up in North Carolina? Um, just just
- 28:32Speaker 1: a few robes from where they said they're velvet, another
- 28:35Speaker 1: warm one, the smallest grape, but nothing crazy. I don't
- 28:39Speaker 1: have seen any significant robes. Maybe one or two it
- 28:43Speaker 1: the most, but nothing really to think of. I feel
- 28:46Speaker 1: like they're just barely moving into the fall transition right now,
- 28:50Speaker 1: but not really fully committed to their home ranges going forward. Then,
- 28:55Speaker 1: in this next week or so, what do you think
- 28:57Speaker 1: that bucket is going to be on a scale of
- 28:59Speaker 1: one to tending North Carolina? Um, I feel like it's
- 29:02Speaker 1: gonna jail bouts approbably eight because we gotta from about
- 29:08Speaker 1: ninety grades nine of averages. It's gonna be a high.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I really feel that the bus I'll be on their
- 29:15Speaker 1: seat moving because it's just gonna be a change for them.
- 29:17Speaker 1: And I really saw they're gonna be up in lazing around,
- 29:20Speaker 1: definitely trying to get ahold of what I had been
- 29:22Speaker 1: in the past week. Alright, Joshua, thanks for joining me,
- 29:25Speaker 1: Congrats on the great deer alright and joining us on
- 29:29Speaker 1: the line. Last is Bryce Lamley from Nebraska. Now Bryce
- 29:32Speaker 1: in Nebraska, what would you say the buck activity has
- 29:35Speaker 1: been lately on a scale of one to ten? Well,
- 29:37Speaker 1: you know, I'm usually conservative, and right now I'd say five,
- 29:41Speaker 1: but it's starting to pick up. We start September one
- 29:44Speaker 1: with both season September has been pretty slow for myself
- 29:48Speaker 1: and a lot of the other guys, but it's just
- 29:49Speaker 1: starting to pick up. The last week we've been um
- 29:52Speaker 1: seeing quite a few bucks that we haven't seen before
- 29:54Speaker 1: show up on trail camera. Were starting to see some
- 29:56Speaker 1: scrapes show up. Nothing really you know big you know,
- 30:00Speaker 1: carbood types of scrapes or anything like that. But we're
- 30:03Speaker 1: starting to see scrapes and scrape line show up. And
- 30:06Speaker 1: one of my good friends from the Lincoln area killed
- 30:08Speaker 1: a really nice pope and youngrossing five by seven on
- 30:12Speaker 1: September twenty seven. And that we've had some up and
- 30:16Speaker 1: down weather we've had. I mean, yesterday was nineties three
- 30:19Speaker 1: here and today at sixty five. It's been crazy. But
- 30:21Speaker 1: when the weather has cooperated, um, the deer starting to
- 30:25Speaker 1: show up now, Bryce, you have great record keeping. That's
- 30:27Speaker 1: one of the reasons I like talking to you. You You
- 30:29Speaker 1: mentioned last year that you saw more signmaking than you've
- 30:33Speaker 1: probably ever seen in your life. Why do you think
- 30:35Speaker 1: that was and what is your kind of scrape forecast? Well,
- 30:40Speaker 1: I think last year was due to combination several factors,
- 30:43Speaker 1: but mostly because I had beans in an area that um,
- 30:48Speaker 1: it's kind of concentrated where the bucks were all coming
- 30:51Speaker 1: out in the same quarter mile to access the egg
- 30:55Speaker 1: fields to a to a bean area, and this year
- 30:58Speaker 1: I don't have that, so that may have been the
- 31:00Speaker 1: catalyst for what I saw last year. Now I'm not
- 31:03Speaker 1: seeing a whole lot of scrape activity yet, but two
- 31:06Speaker 1: of my friends, like I said, are starting to see
- 31:08Speaker 1: an uptick in that, and also seeing an uptick in
- 31:11Speaker 1: the trail camera pictures on those sites. And one of
- 31:14Speaker 1: those friends from Hall County out by Grand Island, it
- 31:17Speaker 1: seems quite a bit of sparring even on his trail
- 31:20Speaker 1: cameras in traditional like staging areas with with the scrapes
- 31:24Speaker 1: and so forth. Now, most of the great Planes were
- 31:27Speaker 1: hit with a lot of flooding in this summer. I
- 31:29Speaker 1: assume it's been the same for you in Nebraska. How
- 31:32Speaker 1: has that changed things for you this fall? Well, I
- 31:36Speaker 1: have two different places where the river literally took ten
- 31:40Speaker 1: acres of land from them, and these are betting areas
- 31:43Speaker 1: close to the river, and I've had a hard time
- 31:46Speaker 1: finding those betting areas again. But I think what's going
- 31:49Speaker 1: on is they're betting out in grassy cover, weedy coover
- 31:54Speaker 1: um in some cases three quarters of a mile from
- 31:56Speaker 1: their original betting areas. Places that aren't being pastured with
- 31:59Speaker 1: cattle have really grown up and are really good places
- 32:02Speaker 1: to hide out, and also um places where they get
- 32:05Speaker 1: away from mosquitoes that tend to concentrate on the timber bryce. Historically,
- 32:09Speaker 1: when you see that summer flooding, do you notice that
- 32:11Speaker 1: those deer kind of always returned to the same area. Well,
- 32:14Speaker 1: I've noticed that a lots of spapes are starting to
- 32:16Speaker 1: show up in those same areas, and I tend to
- 32:18Speaker 1: believe that we have I read an article this summer about,
- 32:23Speaker 1: you know, how floods affect things, and that the I
- 32:26Speaker 1: guess the theme of that article said that they would
- 32:28Speaker 1: return to their old areas, and so I'm kind of
- 32:30Speaker 1: banking on that and I'm just starting to see that
- 32:33Speaker 1: happen a little bit. Now. How do you think all
- 32:35Speaker 1: the moisture is going to affect harvest this year in Nebraska?
- 32:38Speaker 1: And how is that going to change deer hunting for you?
- 32:41Speaker 1: I haven't seen any crops coming out yet, except some
- 32:43Speaker 1: guys that are cutting from corn. Looks like for you know,
- 32:46Speaker 1: silas or something like that. Um Beans are pretty much
- 32:51Speaker 1: uh yellow now some turning brown. Although a friend of
- 32:54Speaker 1: mine has had really good luck in in a corner
- 32:57Speaker 1: of a field southwest corner where there's a low spot
- 33:00Speaker 1: and it's still green on those beans. However, my buddy
- 33:03Speaker 1: that's further west is says all the beans are yellow,
- 33:05Speaker 1: and in his case, they're walking through the beans going
- 33:09Speaker 1: to the path Afla. Now, Bryce, you hunt quite a
- 33:11Speaker 1: bit and you can kind of pick and choose your
- 33:14Speaker 1: spots when you get out there this time of year.
- 33:16Speaker 1: What are the ideal conditions you're looking for in early October? Well,
- 33:20Speaker 1: I guess I'm still looking at um. I like staging
- 33:23Speaker 1: areas just inside the timber where I can still make
- 33:26Speaker 1: a relatively secret entry and exit. Um those staging areas
- 33:31Speaker 1: where they're um kind of killing time before they go
- 33:34Speaker 1: out to the egg field. And usually in the evenings
- 33:39Speaker 1: mornings that might go to those same places, or maybe
- 33:42Speaker 1: a little bit deeper, but on like lanes in the woods,
- 33:45Speaker 1: so again I can get in and out. I really
- 33:47Speaker 1: don't want to booger up the woods too much this
- 33:49Speaker 1: time of year. That having said that, I have killed
- 33:52Speaker 1: a nice deer in in this you know, early October
- 33:55Speaker 1: first ten fifteen days. You just got to be out there.
- 33:58Speaker 1: It's true about my hunting that I hunt all the
- 34:00Speaker 1: time no matter what, and because of that, I haven't
- 34:03Speaker 1: really paid a lot of attention to moon faces. However,
- 34:06Speaker 1: I can tell you that there's a really big increase
- 34:09Speaker 1: in sightings and so forth when I see um cold
- 34:13Speaker 1: weather maybe on the back side of a low pressure
- 34:16Speaker 1: system and that type of thing. And so when we
- 34:18Speaker 1: have like this next week coming up, it's supposed to
- 34:21Speaker 1: be highs in the fifties and sixties and lows in
- 34:23Speaker 1: the forties, I'm pretty excited about that in October going forward.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Then in a sex week or so, what do you
- 34:29Speaker 1: think that buck activity is going to be on a
- 34:31Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in Nebraska. I'm gonna be
- 34:33Speaker 1: optimistic and for October and say seven, because I tend
- 34:37Speaker 1: to have a flurry of stave activity on trail cameras
- 34:41Speaker 1: in that August excuse me, the October tenth timeframe, couple
- 34:46Speaker 1: days either side, and with this cold uh weather coming
- 34:50Speaker 1: in for the time of year, I'm really encouraged to
- 34:53Speaker 1: be optimistic. I guess alright, Bryce, great info is always
- 34:58Speaker 1: good luck there in Nebraska, And thanks for to one
- 35:00Speaker 1: to me. Oh, thank you. And that concludes this week's
- 35:03Speaker 1: episode of rut Fresh Radio. Thanks to Byron, John, Josh,
- 35:08Speaker 1: and Bryce for joining me, and thank you guys for listening.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Happy October to everybody out there. Most of the states
- 35:14Speaker 1: in the country should now be open, so I hope
- 35:16Speaker 1: everybody has some hunting in by the time you hear
