- 0:00Speaker 1: We're here live in the music lounge here at iHeart.
- 0:06Speaker 1: And let's talk about this team now. You get 47%
- 0:10Speaker 1: of the minutes back. You get 48% of the points
- 0:13Speaker 1: scoring from last year. But you lose two guys. Terrace Reed,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Alex Caravan. It's tough to replace not only the value
- 0:21Speaker 1: of their athleticism and their basketball savvy. but their character.
- 0:26Speaker 1: When you try to do that, how do you start?
- 0:29Speaker 1: How do you begin that process?
- 0:30Speaker 2: You replace them with the closest version of what you
- 0:34Speaker 2: had without overreaching and making a mistake by thinking you
- 0:41Speaker 2: could absolutely repeat it. You have a template, prototype, or
- 0:47Speaker 2: archetype of a type of player. For us, it's like that.
- 0:53Speaker 2: that four spot, that three, four combination forward that, you know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: like you don't want to change too much about how
- 1:00Speaker 2: we play in our system because the way we play
- 1:03Speaker 2: has been very effective. So you've got to try to
- 1:06Speaker 2: find a player that blends skills, approach, you know, understanding
- 1:15Speaker 2: a basketball that could replace some of the things that
- 1:19Speaker 2: Alex brought to the table. So like, You know, when
- 1:22Speaker 2: you know you can't find that as a high school
- 1:26Speaker 2: freshman coming into college. So, you know, you're just praying
- 1:29Speaker 2: that when the portal opens, because, like, we are bad
- 1:33Speaker 2: at tampering. There's a lot of programs that are good
- 1:36Speaker 2: at it.
- 1:36Speaker 1: We're bad at tampering.
- 1:37Speaker 2: With other rosters. So we actually have to wait until
- 1:41Speaker 2: the portal opens and then hope that a fit comes in,
- 1:45Speaker 2: like a Cam Spencer when Hawk goes, like a Nick Hamid.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Thank you for that. Now I know what his name is.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I know, I know, I'm trying. But, yeah, like Nick
- 2:01Speaker 2: was a guy that you target once you, you know,
- 2:04Speaker 2: and we had some familiarity preparing for Duke. We watched
- 2:08Speaker 2: him play in high school. We saw him overseas where
- 2:10Speaker 2: we went to watch Furphy in Switzerland the summer before
- 2:15Speaker 2: his freshman year. And then, you know, like Tarras, Adama Sonogo,
- 2:20Speaker 2: Hines has a lot of– Najai's got a lot of
- 2:22Speaker 2: the same traits, qualities. And then Oscar, you know, like
- 2:27Speaker 2: a second center that's got more movement type of guy
- 2:31Speaker 2: to complement it. So, you know, we're trying to– obviously
- 2:35Speaker 2: you can't, you know, like– Duplicate it.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't.
- 2:39Speaker 2: But, you know, you still need to find the traits
- 2:42Speaker 2: that fit the way that we play.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. So let's talk about Nick Hemenya. I
- 2:48Speaker 1: got that one right. Bobby Mullins helped me with that one.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Your second, your aide to comp there. How'd you get
- 2:55Speaker 1: him out of Duke? Come on, Dan. Beating Duke, we
- 2:58Speaker 1: love to do that. We love beating them. We like
- 3:02Speaker 1: to beat them on the court, off the court. Come on.
- 3:05Speaker 1: How'd you get him out of Duke?
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean, the reality is, I think, you know,
- 3:12Speaker 2: Nick's situation wasn't one where I think he knew a
- 3:15Speaker 2: month later before the season was over, like I'm going
- 3:18Speaker 2: in at the end of the year. I think he literally,
- 3:20Speaker 2: I don't think he envisioned when the season was over
- 3:23Speaker 2: that he was necessarily going to leave Duke. You know,
- 3:26Speaker 2: I just think it gets to the end of the year.
- 3:28Speaker 2: All of us coaches, we get with our players and
- 3:31Speaker 2: we have a meeting about, you know, what is your
- 3:34Speaker 2: role going to be? You know, like what's the vision
- 3:38Speaker 2: we have for you? And I'd imagine that, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 2: it just didn't, what he saw for himself as a
- 3:44Speaker 2: sophomore was, Maybe it didn't align with the way they
- 3:46Speaker 2: saw it. It's not like he hated Duke. Couldn't wait
- 3:48Speaker 2: to get out of there. So, you know, he ends
- 3:51Speaker 2: up going in the portal. And, you know, we got
- 3:54Speaker 2: him on campus, obviously, as quickly as possible. And it's uncanny.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And you could see it already, even though it's two
- 3:59Speaker 2: exhibition games. Just IQ, processing, versatility, you know, toughness, ability
- 4:09Speaker 2: to make shots. Just how great, I mean, just how
- 4:13Speaker 2: clean a fit he is It's almost like we were
- 4:16Speaker 2: really stupid for not really recruiting him hard at high school.
- 4:20Speaker 2: You should have tried harder. Well, no, Luke was messing
- 4:22Speaker 2: with him out of high school. Luke was recruiting him.
- 4:25Speaker 2: But then we heard, I think, in summer, because he
- 4:29Speaker 2: played on the Puma circuit. So it was very inconvenient
- 4:33Speaker 2: to go see a player on the Puma circuit because
- 4:35Speaker 2: there's only like one or two players. There's way more
- 4:38Speaker 2: players on the Nike circuit. There's like 20 players recruiting
- 4:41Speaker 2: on Nike and two on Puma. And it's like way
- 4:45Speaker 2: far away. And then you've got the rumor that he's
- 4:48Speaker 2: kind of leaning Duke. So you're like, am I really
- 4:52Speaker 2: going to make a trip all the way to this
- 4:53Speaker 2: Puma circuit where he's literally like the only player? And
- 4:58Speaker 2: he may be going to Duke anyway. Or should I
- 5:00Speaker 2: just stay here at Nike? We just stayed at Nike.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Did you have flashbacks of Cooper Flagg? because he's another
- 5:08Speaker 1: guy that everyone loved. I thought he might come here,
- 5:11Speaker 1: but let's not talk about Cooper. All right, we're moving
- 5:14Speaker 1: on from that.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It's like 8 million things you could talk about. Stu's
- 5:17Speaker 2: bringing up Cooper. All right.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Moving on to the Jai Hines. We got a good
- 5:24Speaker 1: look at him. I have a good seat. Most of
- 5:27Speaker 1: the time we play Seton hall down there. And, uh,
- 5:30Speaker 1: man i saw him on a court and i said
- 5:32Speaker 1: wow i'd love to see him in one of our
- 5:33Speaker 1: uniforms the dude was big he was agile he was
- 5:37Speaker 1: he had a lot of good qualities and he's here
- 5:39Speaker 1: now yeah i mean like i mean we wanted to
- 5:41Speaker 1: recruit him out of high school if he stayed in
- 5:44Speaker 1: his class and didn't reclass up we would have we
- 5:49Speaker 1: would have been a major priority when he reclassed up
- 5:51Speaker 1: we already had an incoming freshman center that we committed
- 5:54Speaker 1: to in in big eric and um You know, he
- 5:58Speaker 1: played great against us as a freshman both times.
- 6:00Speaker 2: He really kicked our butt on senior day with AK,
- 6:04Speaker 2: where AK saved us from a really bad loss. But,
- 6:08Speaker 2: you know, we trapped him in the post. That's how
- 6:11Speaker 2: much respect we had for him in terms of his
- 6:13Speaker 2: ability when Tarras was not in the game. You know,
- 6:16Speaker 2: we post-trapped him because we didn't feel like we could
- 6:19Speaker 2: handle a one-on-one there. He just got the traits and
- 6:22Speaker 2: the attributes. He's got offensive ability. He's got defensive ability.
- 6:26Speaker 2: He's got rebounding ability at both ends. It's just the
- 6:30Speaker 2: adjustment and the fact that we need him to be
- 6:33Speaker 2: there as a 19-year-old. We need him to be there
- 6:38Speaker 2: as Tarras was in his sophomore year at Michigan. If
- 6:42Speaker 2: you go back and look at what Tarras looked like
- 6:45Speaker 2: sophomore year at Michigan, it did not resemble what he
- 6:48Speaker 2: looked like junior year and then eventually senior year. So
- 6:52Speaker 2: With Oscar and Jai, I think you see that there's
- 6:54Speaker 2: talent there, but there's also been some not as efficient
- 7:02Speaker 2: in foul trouble both games. I mean, there's going to
- 7:03Speaker 2: be some growing pains with them, and we've got to
- 7:08Speaker 2: be a little bit patient, but we don't have that
- 7:10Speaker 2: much time to be patient.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Yeah, you've got a big schedule ahead of you. There
- 7:13Speaker 1: is a learning curve. We're going to take a quick
- 7:16Speaker 1: commercial break here and be back. Maybe we'll talk about
- 7:18Speaker 1: that and much more.
