Transcript
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation podcast network.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall, and Tristan Matt Wells owns West Virginia.
- 0:56SPEAKER_07: Sorry, my voice is a little hoarse from telling everyone about a four-in-one Texas Tech football team.
- 1:02SPEAKER_07: Um, I and did I mention before that John Denver attended Texas Tech University?
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: Was that I heard that yeah, I heard that once or twice uh throughout.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: I heard that was was that a rumor, or is that is that the truth?
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: No, I think that's the stone cold truth, my friend.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: The people are talking about the people are saying the people are saying that John Denver went to Texas Tech and Matt Wells is now 3-0 against the Mountaineers.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech pulls out a win 23 to not or 23 to nothing, 23.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: I wish it was 23 to nothing, 23 to 20 on that game.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: Um, dude, I I mean, you know, it's so it's so weird as a fan because uh it it's kind of how you go into the game, is how your mood is gonna be.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: So, like UT game, we're we're riding high, we're three and oh.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: We're like, okay, you know, UT, we're gonna put up a fight.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: We're probably we might win this game.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: You know, I I expect us to win almost.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: And then boom, we get smacked in the face.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: Terrible game all around.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: And then we go into this West Virginia game and we're like, okay, I'm not expecting a win.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: I'm expecting our team to be bad and just repeat what we've been doing the last few years.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: And lo and behold, they pull out a win in Morgantown, uh, injuries all over the place, backup quarterback, and and we pulled out a gutsy win, man.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: What else is there to say?
- 2:27SPEAKER_07: I'm sorry, I don't know what this UT game you're talking about is because all I know is we got a big dub and a tough place to play in the Big 12.
- 2:37SPEAKER_07: No, very impressive, and you you're right.
- 2:39SPEAKER_07: It's it's it's weird to go from an absolute demoralizing day that was the Longhorn one and just see us turn it around and get it done, man.
- 2:48SPEAKER_07: We led the entire game, we were never trailing.
- 2:51SPEAKER_07: Uh very impressive uh from the Red Raiders in Morgantown.
- 2:54SPEAKER_07: I it's hard to criticize this game.
- 2:57SPEAKER_07: I'm sure I know we can nitpick at it, but going it's a road game in Morgantown, and you're missing practically every best starter you have, and he's gonna W pretty comfortably for the most part.
- 3:11SPEAKER_07: You know, got a little got a little got a little scary towards the end, but uh it still came together.
- 3:16SPEAKER_07: And like I said, we led the whole time, never trailed.
- 3:19SPEAKER_07: It's it's it was great to see us respond because this team could have been easily defeated after that UT game.
- 3:25SPEAKER_07: They could have gone in for the losers' mentality, but they didn't.
- 3:28SPEAKER_07: They were fighting for their team, they were fighting for Matt Wells, they're fighting for a better record, and here we are sitting at a very comfortable four and one.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: And and you know, one thing we should do this before we move on with the rest of the game.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: We have to do a certain thing here on Talking Tech Pod after Texas Tech gets a dub.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Holy cow! And we aren't forgetting that today, we are playing the song.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Play the song!
- 3:54SPEAKER_06: Take me home.
- 4:02SPEAKER_06: With a few red latest red raiders right again.
- 4:23SPEAKER_07: I know that's the song everyone was expecting that to hear, because that's what we do after a dub, is we play our alumni's music.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes, we have to do it every single win.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: And dude, if you were to tell me that Texas Tech is four and one, five games into the season, before the season, I would have been ecstatic.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: And I am ecstatic because right now we have a great record.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: We are four and one, one and one in conference play.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: We get a huge road win against a good West Virginia team.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: I know they're two and three right now, but they are good, they're solid.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: They just this is the same team that just took Oklahoma down to the wire and only lost by three to them, beat a good Virginia Tech team.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, I this is a solid win for the program.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: And and I just I just want to say something about Matt Wells because that man took so much crap this last week and he deserved it.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying he didn't.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: That UT game was pitiful and we weren't prepared and everything like that.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: But for him to get his team to respond in the way that they did with all the injuries that we had and go into hostile territory and pull out a win is impressive.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: And I don't care what anybody says about it.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: You can talk about that third quarter all you want, but for three out of the four quarters of that game, we looked impressive.
- 5:45SPEAKER_07: This is arguably Matt Wells' most impressive uh career win at Texas Tech because, like you said, we we were missing everyone, and it's hard to find wins that way.
- 5:57SPEAKER_07: You know, you put your best players on the field to win, and when you can't do that, you're in a you're already starting from behind.
- 6:03SPEAKER_07: West Virginia wasn't missing anybody, they were going in full force.
- 6:07SPEAKER_07: Yeah, we still had to deal with Letty Brown and the uh the and worse daggy, so it's not like it's not like we were playing an equally battered West Virginia team in their own place.
- 6:18SPEAKER_07: We went to the mountains to do this.
- 6:20SPEAKER_07: It's I I'm very impressed with this win because this to pull this team through and just with the worst stakes possible, because you know, you're coming off of a terrible loss where everyone's laughing at you, and we're feeling so defeated as a fan base to just turn it around like that.
- 6:35SPEAKER_07: Matt Wells is three and oh against this West Virginia team somehow.
- 6:38SPEAKER_07: It's really impressive.
- 6:39SPEAKER_07: Like, I it it's I know everyone's gonna be complaining about the third quarter, and it's it it was tough, but that's football, you know.
- 6:46SPEAKER_07: And and with the with how the team responded during all of it and being able to play with just a complete lack of starters was incredibly impressive.
- 6:56SPEAKER_07: The way the players stepped up and filled the roles that they needed to was just nothing short but applauseworthy.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: And and this just wasn't just a win that they did for themselves.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: If you saw that picture, I don't know if you did it, that picture of Josh Berger hugging Matt Wells after the game, these players are fighting for him.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, you talk about a guy who has not lost the locker room, has been a good leader for this team and this program, it's Matt Wells.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, he hasn't put up the wins to prove it yet, but you could tell this team loves playing for the guy and that he loves coaching this team.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: And so that's something I cannot crap on Matt Wells for.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, and and I mean, seeing seeing the way this team responded, and I think played not only for themselves but for him, uh, was was really cool to see.
- 7:52SPEAKER_07: That's a great point.
- 7:54SPEAKER_07: And I think that's probably the most important point to take from this.
- 7:56SPEAKER_07: Is so we'll hopefully be able to see us just fight here from here on because I'm sure the players know the states too.
- 8:00SPEAKER_07: They know this is year three for him, and they know after that UT uh loss, it's just that kind of play is unacceptable.
- 8:07SPEAKER_07: And uh no matter no matter what state the team is in, you cannot be giving up 70 points.
- 8:13SPEAKER_07: Uh, it is just completely as a tech fan base, you just cannot accept that.
- 8:17SPEAKER_07: And they understand that, and they and they brought it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_07: And like we said the last episode that if we go to Morgantown and win this game, UT's forgotten, or at least mostly forgiven.
- 8:27SPEAKER_07: So, and I that's how I feel right now.
- 8:30SPEAKER_07: Like you guys, we went to Morgantown and we beat West Virginia.
- 8:34SPEAKER_07: It's this is not like we we went and beat some FCS or G5 team, we beat a conference opponent who everyone thought was gonna beat us.
- 8:42SPEAKER_07: They were favored, and everyone thought West Virginia was gonna have a decent year, and everyone thought we were gonna be a bottom dweller.
- 8:48SPEAKER_07: So I it's we're kind of throwing the p being picked ninth in the conference to the side right now because I'm feeling damn good about this team.
- 8:55SPEAKER_07: We are one and one in conference and we are four and one overall.
- 8:58SPEAKER_07: Well, West Virginia cannot say the same thing.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: It's fine to be skeptical of this team because we have been very up and down.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, you've seen it throughout the year, but this is why I I said what I said on last week's episode.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: We were three and one after that UT game, and now we're four and one.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: We're in a prime position to make a bowl game with now seven games left.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, and one of those is Kansas.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: And so I I I'm just really I'm I'm happy with the response more than anything from this team.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: It shows that they don't just fold.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, it's a team full of veterans that aren't gonna, you know, for the most part, they're they're gonna give up or you know, they're gonna forget about what happened against UT and move on.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: That's what the good teams do, that's what the good players do, take it week by week and move on from there.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: And now I hope after this good win against West Virginia, you forget about that and you move on to TCU and you make that your priority.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: You know, you don't dwell on the past, you look forward to the future.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: And I think, you know, this West Virginia win shows a lot about where our team, where their heads are at and where their thought process is going into practice, having a good week after a bad loss, and responding in a great way.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: Um, I I did I did want to emphasize these injuries because uh, you know, a lot of people that we, a lot of Big 12 outlets that we've been, you know, podcasting stuff that we've been listening to this week have have put it more as a loss for West Virginia and less of a of a win for Texas Tech.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: And for us to go in there without Tyler Shuck, without Taj Brooks, without Eric Ezukama, without Dawson Deaton, without Muddy Waters, without Demarcus Fields, without Malik Dunlap, and then during the game, Reggie Pearson gets hurt, Kosi Eldridge gets hurt, Chadarius Townsend gets hurt.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: That's eight or nine guys right there that are out that play significant roles on this team.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: And uh for us to respond, for these guys to come in and fill those positions, fill those spots, and hold West Virginia to 20 points when you have that many defensive guys out, that's damn impressive.
- 11:02SPEAKER_07: Bro, short of Sir Roger Thompson, every one of our immediate record immediately recognizable stars was hurt and out.
- 11:10SPEAKER_07: Like you just listed the entire list of anyone that's not a Texas Tech fan would probably recognize if they're you know a general Big 12 fan.
- 11:17SPEAKER_07: And that's damn impressive for us to go and do what we did because most teams would lose in that game, but that's just that just shows the way the coaches got our players up for this and uh the way we were able to develop the play calling to to complement it because I think Henry Columbi went in and had a great game.
- 11:32SPEAKER_07: Our defense shut them out for the whole first half.
- 11:35SPEAKER_07: So it was just I it's hard to be mad right now as a fan because at this point you'll take the wins, and and in conference play, no matter how they look, you'll take them.
- 11:46SPEAKER_07: So West Virginia looks a lot like a lot of teams we're gonna be playing this year.
- 11:49SPEAKER_07: So I think this should give us a little confidence, thinking that you know, we do have some battle in us, and when we go into this this game against TCU, who's going who's on a two loss streak, you gotta feel pretty good about your chances, you know.
- 12:01SPEAKER_07: Like I'm sure a lot of people are still penciling in easy win for TCU.
- 12:06SPEAKER_07: But I I would kind of hope for Red Raider fans after we get this ups with it.
- 12:10SPEAKER_07: What was an upset win?
- 12:11SPEAKER_07: They were favored by seven points uh against Western Virginia.
- 12:14SPEAKER_07: You can have some confidence going forward.
- 12:16SPEAKER_07: Like, don't give up on this team is basically my long-winded like that's just way too long to say don't give up on this team.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and you shouldn't.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: Three four games into the year, people were so ready to give up on them because they had one bad loss.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: And yes, it's against some rival, it's against Texas.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: You hate to see it, but I'm glad you brought that up that we shut them out in the first half because you go one week giving up 70 to Texas, they don't punt one time to go against West Virginia the next week, shut them out the entire first quarter.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: You only allow three points in the first, second, and fourth quarters combined.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, what a response from this defense.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: These guys uh really brought it.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, from Colin Schooler, who was named Big 12 defensive player of the week.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: Spectacular.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: He was awesome.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: Rico Jeffers had a fantastic game.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: The defensive lineman, uh, Matt Wells uh singled out those three guys when he was asked a question at his at his uh uh weekly press conference.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: Um, basically about who who you know impressed you the most from that game after watching the film.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: He was like Jalen Hutchings, Tony Bradford, and uh Tyree Wilson.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: He was like those three defensive linemen uh with the with the type of defense that we run for this three-man front.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: I'm not a big fan of it, but uh, you know, that's what they're rolling with.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, they really impressed, uh, impressed me and and proved uh that they can you know get to the quarterback and make uh you know them work and have to force them to make plays.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: Jalen uh Jalen Hutchings got in there, had a sack on the day.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Tyree Wilson got to the quarterback a few times.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: We held Letty Brown to 3.4 yards a carry.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: That's one of the best running backs in the Big 12 there.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: And that's the defensive line, and that's the linebackers getting at it.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: So uh the response from this defense after a terrible week to go in and play a really damn good game is is awesome.
- 14:08SPEAKER_07: Dallas Collins Gouler's best game, and that says a ton.
- 14:10SPEAKER_07: He played spectacularly.
- 14:13SPEAKER_07: It's hard to say which unit did better.
- 14:15SPEAKER_07: Was it the defense or the special teams?
- 14:17SPEAKER_07: And it's a really hard conversation to have because the special teams went off as well.
- 14:22SPEAKER_07: I was unbelievably impressed with the way we got that field goal off in the second quarter within like under 20 seconds.
- 14:29SPEAKER_07: Like I was floored.
- 14:30SPEAKER_07: I thought that was one of the coolest things I've seen this team ever pull off.
- 14:34SPEAKER_07: Um, and it's it's it was awesome to see that because it's not like the offense played badly either, it's just that the defense and the special teams they shined, man.
- 14:43SPEAKER_07: And that is so cool to see for a Texas Tech team that is so used to just the offense carrying the squad because this defense owes we owe the win to them without question because they held them to shut them out for all half, and you hold the team to 20 points at Texas Tech.
- 14:58SPEAKER_07: We'll take that every single week.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and offense did fine.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: There's nothing, yeah, you know, they did enough to win the game, and that's what you like to see.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Henry Columbi was poised back there.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: He made some great plays, he made some great throws when he needed to the most.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: Could they have been better?
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you know, you're missing your starting center on the offensive line, you're missing the best wide receiver in the Big 12, you're missing your leading rusher on the year, you're missing your quarterback.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, what are you expecting that to do on any team?
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: You take just a generic team and say, hey, you're missing uh three, four of your best players on offense, go win a game.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: And not a lot of teams are gonna go do that.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: And we win, did that.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: And uh, I guess I guess let's talk about the offense a little bit because uh, you know, Eric Ezekama was a surprise, Dawson Dean was a surprise miss.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, guys that didn't even make the trip to Morgantown that we were like, okay, here we go.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: This is it just has to happen.
- 15:55SPEAKER_03: There's always some major key players that we're gonna miss for the game.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, uh I'm not gonna say we didn't skip a beat because we did struggle at times, but uh the wide receiver stepped up, man.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Caitlin Geiger stepped up.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: Uh the young guys, Loick Fungi, had a great game.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, Trey Cleveland, true freshman Joran Bradley caught a few balls.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh, just great job by the receivers for stepping up this game, missing the best wide receiver in the Big 12.
- 16:26SPEAKER_07: Hats off to Sonny Cumbey for developing a playbook that really played to these guys' strength because I think we were this close to putting West Virginia away in the first half.
- 16:35SPEAKER_07: Had we scored a touchdown in the second quarter, I think it probably would have been over.
- 16:38SPEAKER_07: Uh, we just uh unfortunately, West Virginia was kind of buckling down and understanding how we were working, but we saw at least we got the two touchdowns of the first.
- 16:45SPEAKER_07: Uh, just seriously, hats off off to Sunny.
- 16:47SPEAKER_07: Third was a little slow, so was the fourth.
- 16:49SPEAKER_07: But like you said, what with the arsenal we had, it was impressive that we put it together enough to win.
- 16:57SPEAKER_07: So they were they they did enough to put enough points on the board to win.
- 17:00SPEAKER_07: And I I just just full applause.
- 17:02SPEAKER_07: So I really please.
- 17:04SPEAKER_07: I hope Texas Tech Athletic Trainers are taking care of our boys because I don't know if that's going to cut it every single week.
- 17:11SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, especially whenever you play some more talented teams, but it's just you you can't be mad at the way it played out offensively.
- 17:21SPEAKER_07: It's it's hard to criticize it.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: Well, and I don't think we're giving enough credit to how good West Virginia's defense is.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: That's a team that held OU to 16 points.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is a good defense that they have here.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, they have some really solid players, one of the best defensive lines in the Big 12.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: Um, some great safeties and everything back there.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, they've been really solid this whole season.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, and you know, we we go in and and make the plays that we need to uh make the throws downfield in timely spots.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: Um, you talk about uh, I thought what was the biggest play of the game was right there, start of the fourth quarter.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: So we just come off having a pretty bad third quarter.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: We get outscored 17-0.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: Uh West Virginia has almost completed the full comeback.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: They're at home, they have all the momentum, and then boom, quarter break.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Start of the fourth quarter.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: We're third and six.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: We need a huge play.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: We need something to get going to get our offense back into it.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: And boom, Sonny Cumbey runs a great play.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: Henry Columbi outside, long pass, Loick Fungi uh makes a great catch down there.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: Almost could have almost scored there.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: He got tripped up by the defender, but uh what a play call.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: Timely.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: That's what that's really what I'm trying to say with all this is just timely plays.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Henry Columbi makes the huge pass to Kalen Geiger there at the end to set up for the field for the game winning field goal in Garabay, knocking that in.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: So um, there was just a lot of really good stuff that went on and at the right times.
- 18:54SPEAKER_07: Good call out.
- 18:55SPEAKER_07: I mean, well, that was like Bungie's coming out game.
- 18:57SPEAKER_07: He he really shined at some super clutch moments.
- 19:00SPEAKER_07: We we suddenly know we have some good receivers on this team because remember, early in our season, we were like, where the heck is everybody?
- 19:07SPEAKER_07: And it's it's good to see that we're finally uh using some of our weapons that we have, and it just it only took easy being taken out to do so.
- 19:15SPEAKER_07: But I obviously I just think it's more of a lesson learned.
- 19:17SPEAKER_07: Uh, and talk about McClain Mannix kind of coming back into his own.
- 19:20SPEAKER_07: I manically being benched was good for him.
- 19:23SPEAKER_07: He was pretty clutch, so it's just good to see some of these names popping back up into the lineup because our we're known for our receivers, and it's disappointing wherever you try to rely on one guy.
- 19:34SPEAKER_07: Well, he's probably the best in the conference, he can't do everything for you, like we keep harping on every single episode, it seems.
- 19:40SPEAKER_07: Um, kind of and another kind of crazy thing with the the offense was we saw lots of like quarterback swapping.
- 19:46SPEAKER_07: You know, we were seeing some Donovan Smith out there as well to do some rushing plays.
- 19:51SPEAKER_07: Interesting play calls.
- 19:52SPEAKER_07: I guess it kind of worked, but you know, every time uh Columbia was out there, we're like, whoa, what?
- 19:56SPEAKER_07: It's it was just interesting to see.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's definitely something that's that's happening more and more in uh college football and NFL.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: You know, you'll see like with the Saints, they throw in Taysom Hill in there and he just goes and runs for a few yards.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: It throws them off, if anything.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: And West Virginia was doing that before this game.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: They kind of just went with Dagey in the second half, but they threw uh Garrett Green in there a few times, and he's got that running ability.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it may it keeps the defense on their toes.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: And uh, we did the same thing there with Donovan Smith.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: So I'm sure we'll see plenty of plenty of Donovan Smith as we move forward with like big third down plays, some red zone stuff.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: I'm sure Matt Wells is trying to throw them off a little bit, and that's a weapon that you need to utilize.
- 20:39SPEAKER_07: Absolutely.
- 20:40SPEAKER_07: Before we move on from talk about the quarterbacks, I just want to give a a 10 out of 10 to Henry Columbi for taking care of the ball.
- 20:45SPEAKER_07: That was probably the best thing he did all day.
- 20:47SPEAKER_07: Not a single turnover.
- 20:48SPEAKER_07: He really he really chose his pass as well.
- 20:50SPEAKER_07: And uh the literally the only turnover was that bizarre trick play in the first quarter that all of us probably disagree with.
- 20:59SPEAKER_07: Obviously, we'd be like, that was sick if it worked, but it just it seemed completely unnecessary.
- 21:03SPEAKER_07: We were marching down the field, like we weren't having issues getting first downs.
- 21:07SPEAKER_07: I I mean, I guess that's there's an argument to be made, like that's when they're least expecting something like that.
- 21:12SPEAKER_07: But I don't really understand the thought process in that move because we we had plenty of momentum going forward.
- 21:17SPEAKER_07: It's not like you know, we still scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, but it could have been three the way we look at it that way, you know, with the way we were moving.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, that was really the only mistake uh of Sonny Cumbie's play calling there in the first half.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, you know, those are forgivable.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: Um, if it was on our side of the field, it would have been more of a detriment to us.
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, you kind of turn it over and make them go down the field, and uh, you know, they can't we stop them there on uh uh anyway.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, eventually the first half plays out how it played.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: So it wasn't, you know, a crucial mistake.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: It was uh, you know, some would say take a shot early, whatever, you know, we're missing everybody, just try something.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: But uh no, I think I think our offense played well enough to win and They played well enough to to beat a really good defense.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: And uh they moved the ball, like you said, during that whole first drive.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: And then uh, you know, when when Schooler pulled out the strip, uh the strip fumble, uh, and we marched down, we still had to go 45 yards and get to the end zone, and we did it.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: So uh taking advantage and building off momentum.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: That was something Matt Wells talked about.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Um, that we we did in the first half, and uh, I was really happy with uh how it played out for sure.
- 22:27SPEAKER_07: And as we wrap this up, I'm sure we split spent plenty of time on this game.
- 22:30SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's a W.
- 22:31SPEAKER_07: You love to talk about it, but before we move on, we gotta talk about our guy, Garabay.
- 22:36SPEAKER_07: The guy came in so clutch, he went for a perfect three and three, man.
- 22:40SPEAKER_07: And it's just it was so great to see him win yet another game.
- 22:44SPEAKER_07: That's two, that is two clutch, like basically buzzer beater games he's got for him in his in his uh in his history, you know.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: No, he was great.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, like and you mentioned it already, the uh the one at the end of the half where you're rushing out there.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, you don't have any timeouts left.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: You got to get out there and you got to you know be clutch and just kick a field goal right away in the span of 12 seconds, and he wouldn't knock that thing in.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, he didn't have any field goals that were super far, but I mean, in in pretty extreme situations, you know, you got uh the game winner on the line as well, and he knocked it right through.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, credit to our our guy, friend of the pod, Austin McNamara, had some great punts this game, put them in some bad position, uh to where they had to march their offense down the field and they couldn't do it.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: So, uh man, special teams is so crucial, and we've had a lot of mistakes on that from that unit to start this season.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: So it was nice seeing a pretty complete uh special team's performance here.
- 23:41SPEAKER_07: Have you ever seen Matt Wells more fired up than after that first half in dirt?
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: He showed he showed the most emotion I've ever seen.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: It was crazy.
- 23:50SPEAKER_07: I loved it.
- 23:51SPEAKER_07: He deserved it, he deserved to be on fire because at that point we were 17 and oh, like everyone's feeling dang good, man.
- 23:59SPEAKER_07: Uh, obviously, we came out of the gates a little slower in the second half, but dude, let's go ahead and wrap this up.
- 24:03SPEAKER_07: The Red Raiders went to Morgan Town and got a W.
- 24:05SPEAKER_07: We are we've gotten three in a row on the Mountaineers, a team that during our college career, we really struggled against.
- 24:11SPEAKER_07: We really struggled against Dana's West Virginia.
- 24:13SPEAKER_07: So I'm really happy to see these guys get it done on the road.
- 24:16SPEAKER_07: You those are never a given, no matter who they are.
- 24:19SPEAKER_07: So I'm just applause all around from the talking tech squad, I would say.
- 24:22SPEAKER_07: What do you think on your final thoughts?
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I you I tried to look at this and I was comparing.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, I listened to some West Virginia pods this morning because you know, I like to hear pain from the other side every once in a while.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: Or once.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: Um, every once in a while.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, look at this, look at some of these other coaches in the Big 12 that started the same time that Matt Wells did.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, and Matt Wells is four and one in his third year.
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: Neil Brown is two and three currently, and uh Chris Kleim in a K-State, I think is two and two.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: He may be two and three or three and two, something like that.
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: But that's that's a group that all started at the same time.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: And my Matt Wells has the best record out of all of them in his third year.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: So uh that's something I know there's context behind that.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: I know some of these other teams have played pretty good, uh, better teams to start off the year, whatever.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: But uh man, uh a four-and-one record.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: I am not gonna complain in any way for the start of this season so far.
- 25:20SPEAKER_07: That's a good way to look at it, is comparing the the basically the same class of coaches.
- 25:24SPEAKER_07: Uh, because everyone thinks that Chris Kleiman and Neil Brown are better coaches than uh than Matt Wells in in the general media sphere, not here.
- 25:31SPEAKER_07: So it's good to see him three and oh against one of the said guys that's supposedly better than him.
- 25:37SPEAKER_07: So it's it's gonna be nice to see maybe us earn some respect.
- 25:40SPEAKER_07: And but heck, I like playing with the chip on the shoulder.
- 25:43SPEAKER_07: I like everyone thinking that there's still tons and tons and tons of outlets are still picking us ninth.
- 25:47SPEAKER_07: There's there's seriously, everyone's like power rankings, still put tech second at ninth.
- 25:51SPEAKER_07: A little weird.
- 25:52SPEAKER_07: We're one and one in the conference, we just beat a decent Big 12 team.
- 25:54SPEAKER_07: So, but hey, whatever, man.
- 25:56SPEAKER_07: If if we end up top half of the conference of the season, they can they can eat it, you know.
- 26:01SPEAKER_07: I like I like the chip that he gives the team.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: And he got one of the what could be a pretty good team in this conference out of the way in Texas.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: So, you know, a pretty pretty favorable schedule.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: I know we still have to play OU, we still got to play Iowa State, but uh, you know, K-State, Oklahoma State's looking pretty decent.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: Start off the year, Baylor's looking pretty decent.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I I I just think there's a lot of evenly matched teams and a lot of evenly matched games coming up for us.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: A lot of parody.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, a lot of parody.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: Uh just a just a fun league to be in right now, a good position that we're starting off in, and we have some momentum, so let's build on it.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, you're right.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: Let's let's let's end it for the West Virginia recap and let's talk about the rest of the Big 12.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, because there were some really good games and and a lot of stuff that uh um we saw out of the Big 12 that you know kind of made us think some different things about certain teams and everything like that.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: So uh let's start with Baylor falling to Oklahoma State.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: It was the battle of undefeated, both were four and oh going into this game, and Oklahoma State kind of dominated.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, I know the score doesn't necessarily reflect, but they played a dang good game.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: That defense is something to worry about uh with the Cowboys.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: Uh they win 24 to 14.
- 27:15SPEAKER_07: Dang good defenses could apply to both of those teams.
- 27:18SPEAKER_07: It was definitely a game of who has the better defense, and that's what it came down to.
- 27:22SPEAKER_07: Uh, so that's that that's what you take from that game is that both of those defenses are no joke.
- 27:27SPEAKER_07: And Oklahoma State might have the best in the conference.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they were they were really solid.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: Their linebackers are fantastic.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm still I'm still iffy on Spencer Sanders.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: I think even Oklahoma State fans are iffy on Spencer Sanders right now.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: But uh, I think dad may come back and bite him in the butt.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: But you can't again, you cannot complain about a five and oh start.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: You really can't, even with the rough, the really rough start at the beginning uh of those three wins that they really just kind of pulled out of their ass.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, and they they go and beat a good Baylor team.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: So uh shouts out to the Cowboys.
- 28:03SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I was about to say, I mean, you even even for Baylor, you can't really be hanging your head too low.
- 28:07SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's a it was a good game against a good team, and he dominated a good uh Iowa State team last week.
- 28:13SPEAKER_07: So Baylor is still a team to watch.
- 28:15SPEAKER_07: So it's like we said before, there's gonna be a lot of parody in this league, but that was definitely a game of probably the some of the two best defenses in the conference.
- 28:22SPEAKER_07: So there'll be uh a couple of units to watch.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: So moving on, uh Kansas, your Jayhawks falling uh very badly to the Iowa State Cyclones.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, 59 to 7 was the final on this one.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: It wasn't their fault, man.
- 28:40SPEAKER_07: While we were on the road, anything happened, okay?
- 28:43SPEAKER_07: Sheesh.
- 28:44SPEAKER_07: Iowa State finally did what they're supposed to for probably the first time this whole season.
- 28:49SPEAKER_07: And I'm sure they feel pretty good about that.
- 28:51SPEAKER_07: But at the end of the day, they have to look at the scoreboard and say, okay, it was against Kansas.
- 28:55SPEAKER_07: So it's I don't know.
- 28:56SPEAKER_07: I don't think you can really take anything from this game other than Kansas is still really bad.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: Kansas is very bad.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, this was the first complete game I've seen at Iowa State this season, so that's something they could build on.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: You know, anytime you get a massive win like this, you're feeling good, at least uh going into next week.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: So uh we'll see how both teams respond.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: Kansas is just they're just very bad.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: It's for October, Steven.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 29:22SPEAKER_07: So we gotta keep an eye on that.
- 29:25SPEAKER_03: Keep an eye.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: Y'all just wrecked Kansas.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Nothing, not much to take from a game against Kansas.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: So uh we'll see how Iowa State does uh in the following weeks.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: But next up, Kansas State ending the streak against the Sooners.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: They fall 37 to 31 uh to OU.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: They pull it out.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: I didn't get to watch much of this game, but uh, you know, and I uh K-State put up a fight, if anything.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: Uh OU scored 37 points.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: That's something they haven't really done to start this year, so it looks like their offense got rolling a little bit.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: So uh I don't know.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: Did you get to see any of this game?
- 30:04SPEAKER_07: No, I think it was on the same time as ours was, so it's oh, wasn't it like else switching off of it?
- 30:09SPEAKER_07: So uh, but that makes two conference games in a row where OU is down to the wire trying to escape the game, and I think that just kind of shows to everybody, and it doesn't mean OU's bad by any means, but I'm just saying, like, this this I think OU is just waiting for a loss.
- 30:23SPEAKER_07: I think it's just gonna, it's just up to which Big 12 team will it be.
- 30:27SPEAKER_07: It could very well be UT this weekend.
- 30:29SPEAKER_07: Texas could be very good, um, with the with the way they've been getting getting through their games, but uh good for Kansas State, they were in it the whole time, and they're kind of off to a more disappointing start in the season.
- 30:41SPEAKER_07: Some people were hyping them up to be pretty like top half team, but they're 0-2 in conference now after dropping one to both Oklahoma schools, which probably isn't anything to be ashamed of.
- 30:51SPEAKER_07: But man, like you said, it's it came down to the wire.
- 30:54SPEAKER_07: Oklahoma State look, I mean, Oklahoma looks pretty vulnerable, and K-State looks like they're gonna contend in every game.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, an 0-2 record in conference isn't the best, but uh, you know, they're they pulled um, yeah, it's it's to the last two undefeated teams in the Big 12 right now.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, K-State is nothing to mess with, and uh, you know, OU is gonna be OU.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: So these are two teams we got to look uh look out for as the season progresses.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: But let's talk about the last uh today's Big 12 game.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Uh TCU falling to Texas, another kind of it wasn't a streak really, but TCU really they've been taking it to Texas the last seven, eight years, and uh they fall to the Longhorns 32 to 27.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, you hate to see it, even I you know I don't like either of these teams, but I I hate to see UT win.
- 31:45SPEAKER_07: No, for sure.
- 31:46SPEAKER_07: And I I was able to watch this one, and TCU did everything they could to make sure UT won this game.
- 31:52SPEAKER_07: Turn overs.
- 31:54SPEAKER_07: They I swear every time I looked up, the TCU turned the ball over to Texas.
- 31:58SPEAKER_07: So it's it's good to see as a tech fan because you want to see more of that against your team, but it's TCU kind of blew it.
- 32:06SPEAKER_07: I don't I don't know if Texas was necessarily just flat out better, but sometimes you can see when a when a team blows it, and turnovers are blowing it.
- 32:14SPEAKER_07: And sure, you can make the argument that Texas was causing these turnovers, and that's a fine argument to make too.
- 32:18SPEAKER_07: Um, but TCU should have done a better job of taking care of the ball, and that was that was I think that was really what decided it.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean I was I was listening to some of these Big 12 podcasts, and uh, you know, they were saying that Texas their offense was rolling, uh, but the TCU defense kind of held them in the red zone to a couple field goals, uh, you know, in in timely spots, kind of like what we did in the West Virginia game.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: And uh, so TCU's defense is nothing to mess with.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, the fact that Texas scored 32 and they probably could have put up almost a 50 burger on this game, uh, you know, is pretty impressive.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I mean, TCU's offense is still something that they need to work on uh pretty clearly, but that defense is still there for sure.
- 32:58SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's it's their signature, it's it's a Patterson's defense, so it'll be something to watch in our game, especially with some of our uh O-line concerns right now, even though I think the O-line played pretty good against West Virginia.
- 33:08SPEAKER_07: Um, but it's it's gonna be something to watch.
- 33:11SPEAKER_07: I really hope we're healthy against that game because that's gonna be one of the best D-lines we see all season.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 33:17SPEAKER_03: So they're coming up here pretty soon, but um, let's move on to the four new additions to the Big 12.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: BYU defeating the formerly coached by Matt Wells team in Utah State.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, 34 to 20.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: BYU stays undefeated.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, they're I think they're top 10 in the nation right now.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Uh I they continue to be a great ad to the conference.
- 33:39SPEAKER_07: Yeah, BYU stays rolling.
- 33:41SPEAKER_07: Beating Aggies, we like saying those words out loud.
- 33:43SPEAKER_07: So good for them, man.
- 33:45SPEAKER_07: They they they can really tear it up right now.
- 33:47SPEAKER_07: And hell, who knows at the end of the year, we could be talking about playoff implications for them just this year.
- 33:53SPEAKER_07: And and that only gets better once they join the Big 12.
- 33:55SPEAKER_07: But that we could really be talking about it at the end of the year.
- 33:57SPEAKER_07: They they can seriously go the rest of the schedule undefeated because whenever you look at it, it's there's not a whole lot of teams that you think that would are going to upset the BYU Cougars.
- 34:05SPEAKER_07: And yeah, if you're if you're in Utah right now, you gotta feel good about that.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but uh really the team that is, I mean, in a prime position to make a playoff spot, the one of the first G5 teams ever in a pretty solid spot is Cincinnati taking down Notre Dame this year, or last week, I should say, 24 to 13.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: They go still this year, yeah.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: It's still this year.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: I'm not technically wrong, but uh I mean, what a win from the Bearcats, man.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: They go into uh where does Notre Dame play?
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: I can't even remember.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: Uh South Bend.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, South Bend.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: They go into South Bend and beat up on a uh I think they were top 10 noted.
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: I think they were number nine or something, Notre Dame team.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: Number nine, yeah.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: Cincinnati out here, man.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: They're they're they're making a run at it.
- 34:55SPEAKER_07: Hey, with the way the other conferences are looking, I think this is the year where a G5 team crashes the playoff, which is ironic because in no more than two years, they're gonna be a power five team, and they're showing that they deserve to be in the club.
- 35:07SPEAKER_07: And whenever you turned on that TV on NBC, which is the only channel that shows Notre Dame, you saw how much red was in that stadium.
- 35:15SPEAKER_07: Their fans showed out.
- 35:17SPEAKER_07: I was really impressed with their fan presence, and I'm just excited to have them because I think they they seem every bit they look and shape of a power five program, and I think the Big 12 picked an excellent one to add to the party.
- 35:29SPEAKER_07: I'm really excited about having them.
- 35:30SPEAKER_07: Them and BYU, man, they're both having spectacular top 10 years.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I'm watching both these teams like a hawk.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: I love seeing these teams succeed.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna cheer hard against them once they join the conference and start playing our team.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: But uh, as of right now, you know, I I'm I'm happy for them.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: I'm happy for both schools.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: Um, but let's move on to Houston.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Houston taking down Tulsa.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: They've been pretty dominant these last few weeks.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: They they beat Tulsa 45 to 10.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: So uh pretty dominant win for Dana and the company.
- 36:03SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Houston's been doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing, and that's that's good to say as a team, you know.
- 36:08SPEAKER_07: Uh I think the only team that they lost to, like where they were favored to win, was us.
- 36:13SPEAKER_07: So uh we like to say that out loud.
- 36:16SPEAKER_07: And now they're getting their work done, and I think they're they're probably rolling on with perhaps division expectations.
- 36:22SPEAKER_07: So, and they looked a bit of it right now, so they've been taking care of business.
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, with with the way Houston's rolling, we could end up being their only loss on the season, and man, that just makes our win look a whole lot better.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: So, um, you know, keep on rolling coups, but uh the disappointing uh team of the group, UCF taking an L to Navy, uh 34 to 30.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Navy has not looked good this year.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Uh they played Houston pretty tight last week, but they go and beat UCF.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: Uh tough game for the Knights.
- 36:54SPEAKER_07: Yeah, unfortunately, the UCF Knights are Navy's first win.
- 36:58SPEAKER_07: They were 0-3 going into that game, so that's not a good look for the Gus bus and for uh, you know, where they're looking trying to look like every bit the P5 look, but uh yeah, you know, it's still plenty of season left, but uh, those are not games you want to be dropping.
- 37:14SPEAKER_07: But it hey, not everybody can be having a great year.
- 37:17SPEAKER_07: That's that's a part of it.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh, three if three out of these four teams are having great years, I'm I'm happy with it.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: So uh exactly, yeah, man, that'll do it.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're crazy week in the Big 12.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it's still early in conference play, but uh I'm excited to see how the rest of this unfolds.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, still want the Knights, even if they're not having great.
- 37:39SPEAKER_07: Um, absolutely uh for sure.
- 37:42SPEAKER_07: I want to bring up one more game before we move on from this.
- 37:46SPEAKER_07: I want to talk about a man who has left his stamp in Lubbock and on the sport as a whole.
- 37:51SPEAKER_07: I want to talk about the pirate, Mike Leach.
- 37:53SPEAKER_07: Do you know what he did over the weekend, Steven at his current job?
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: I did see that he beat a certain teacher we dislike very much.
- 38:01SPEAKER_07: Did you uh well, I mean, I think what was just so nice about this win is it was just you know, every Saturday, this man knows it's he is so used to walking into Kyle Field and upsetting the Yell leaders and upsetting the milkmen and all those Boy Scouts.
- 38:17SPEAKER_07: So it was it was a great, great day to be a red raider.
- 38:21SPEAKER_07: And the only thing that would have made it better if it was TCU beating UT, but we could just look at it as UT beat TCU and feel pretty good about it as well.
- 38:28SPEAKER_07: So good, thank you so much, Mike Leach.
- 38:31SPEAKER_07: You are still beloved in the LBK, and we hope nothing but the best for your Mississippi State Bulldogs.
- 38:37SPEAKER_07: Congrats on the very, very nice ranked win.
- 38:41SPEAKER_07: AM is about to go 0-3 in conference, and I am very, very happy about it.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: Look, most Texas Tech fans still love Mike Leach, they love what he brought to our program, and yeah, it was a messy divorce, but hey, you know, we both moved on from it.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: And by the way, uh Mike Leach's quarterback's name is Will Rogers.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: Uh so yeah, it was it was a lot of Texas tech here in this win uh over AM, and it's always lovely to see the Aggies go down.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: The video of the Yell leader at the Midnight Yell talking all sorts of mess about the city of Starkville and uh how AM's gonna crush them, and then they go into Kyle Field and just wreck the Aggies.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: You'd love to see it, you'd love to see it.
- 39:26SPEAKER_07: You you love to see the uh transitive since Memphis beat Mississippi State, that means AM is worse than Memphis, and Memphis just lost the Temple.
- 39:36SPEAKER_07: Uh, so Temple is better than AM as well.
- 39:38SPEAKER_07: There's a lot of teams that are better than the Aggies right now.
- 39:40SPEAKER_07: I must say it's good to see them off the ranked list.
- 39:44SPEAKER_07: And I I just I just had to celebrate our pirate doing what he does, and that's ruining Aggies' days.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean you look at AM's schedule here, Bama, Ole Miss, LSU left.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, there's not a lot of dubs left on this schedule.
- 40:00SPEAKER_07: I know the the SEC builds it to where it's very easy to go to a bowl with four pretty much four guaranteed wins.
- 40:06SPEAKER_07: But um, it's dude, you you look at this and you think that what okay, they can they have they already played South Carolina?
- 40:13SPEAKER_07: I don't think so.
- 40:14SPEAKER_07: I don't think so.
- 40:15SPEAKER_07: That's a very winnable game.
- 40:16SPEAKER_07: Um, but other than that, maybe LSU, maybe they they might not go bowling, and there's a good chance that they finished dead last in the division, and they just gave Jimbo Fisher a raise.
- 40:28SPEAKER_07: Like it just you could we could just sit back in Lubbock with our four-in-one record and just say, you know, West Texas is best Texas, AM can suck every sort of behind there is.
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: That's the funniest part of all this because Jimbo Fisher just completely robbed Texas AM of all this money, and he is connected with that team for so much longer, and it's really nice to see the steady rise of Aggie fans complaining about Jimbo, and it's only gonna happen for so much longer because he's on contract for like 12 more years.
- 41:06SPEAKER_07: I don't I don't understand the extension.
- 41:09SPEAKER_07: Like, did they think anyone was coming to buy the most expensive buyout contract, guaranteed contracts in college football?
- 41:16SPEAKER_07: Did they think that was about to happen?
- 41:18SPEAKER_07: They think, oh crap, Alabama's about to get her a Nick Saban or something like that.
- 41:23SPEAKER_07: Like, seriously, yeah, Jay Jimbo's got a good agent.
- 41:26SPEAKER_07: That's all I gotta say.
- 41:28SPEAKER_07: Because I guess they made him think that he was gonna leave that or something to to warrant an extension.
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: It was a bad, it was a bad move at the time.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be a bad move when the contract eventually ends in 2097.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, but yeah, it's it's uh it's it's not looking good for the AGs right now, and uh, you know, you love to see it.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: You absolutely love to see it for sure.
- 41:53SPEAKER_07: And as we move forward with the college football news, did you see that the conference that was going to raid the Big 12 can't even raid the Mountain West?
- 42:02SPEAKER_07: I know we were on death doorstep, right?
- 42:04SPEAKER_07: According to ESBN, you know, we we have no value, we add no uh value to the Pac-12.
- 42:09SPEAKER_07: And if you saw those games, you could totally understand why with those pool stadiums like Stanford versus Oregon.
- 42:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah, big 12 teams can't can't run with that, you know.
- 42:18SPEAKER_07: Um, but it's it's funny to see the American not even be able to add lower tier Mountain West teams, like it they are in some trouble, and I'm not just trying to like give the American a hard time, but I'm gonna try.
- 42:30SPEAKER_07: I'm just I'm just trying to like shove it in the the faces of ESB and people who totally listen to those podcasts that the Big 12 is weaker than all these other conferences.
- 42:39SPEAKER_07: Uh, you know, it's just not true.
- 42:40SPEAKER_07: And the Americans in some serious trouble.
- 42:42SPEAKER_07: I don't I don't know how they go from here, I don't know if they make it through this or not, but it's just it's good to see that the Big 12 is fine and that there's really nothing to worry about going forward like that.
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean that was all blown out of proportion.
- 42:57SPEAKER_03: Once you know, you TNOU decided then everybody's saying everything and media heads are spitting certain things, or boy stew is out here saying the Big 12 adds no uh value to anybody.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, it you know, it it was all ridiculous, it was all overblown from the start, and you're seeing it take place.
- 43:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, the Big 12 still puts out a good product.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: You're seeing the Pac-12 eat itself alive with Oregon losing to Stanford, like you know, every year they just eat themselves up in an empty stadium.
- 43:25SPEAKER_03: And I and and now you're seeing the American who ESPN owns their rights and they're only going way down.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, Memphis is the only thing worth a shit left.
- 43:34SPEAKER_03: And you know, I I mean, I I hate to I hate to crap on those other programs too, because you know Smooth's doing pretty good right now, and there's other, you know, and they could add some more pretty decent teams that have room to grow and stuff like that.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: But yeah, if they're not getting, I mean, they weren't even denied by like a Boise State, they were denied by Air Force and Colorado State and these teams, like you know, uh, and so yeah, it's it's Looking rough right now if you're the American conference uh commissioner.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, you had some other lower-tier teams that could that have room to grow, you know, some Appalachian states of the world, some UTSAs.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: I think they'll end up being fine, but it's obviously taken a major hit losing Cincinnati and Houston and uh UCF to you know the Big 12.
- 44:22SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 44:23SPEAKER_07: This isn't a podcast that rips on big uh G5 conferences and or anything like that.
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: We we think fans are fans and teams are teams in that sense.
- 44:30SPEAKER_07: It's I'm just saying that I'm just looking after for the Big 12 that just got way too much undeserved crap, and everyone listening to this knows that.
- 44:37SPEAKER_07: And whenever you're looking at the new Big 12, we have two teams in the top 10.
- 44:41SPEAKER_07: So it's it's amazing, they're not even in the conference yet.
- 44:44SPEAKER_07: So we're looking really strong coming out of this, and like you said, you know, the American does have some options, but if if if there's a possibility to draw them, uh so it's just interesting to look around the landscape as things aren't totally done shifting right now, but I think they're pretty much pretty settled for the Big 12 for a bit.
- 45:02SPEAKER_07: Um, it was interesting to hear that Boise State and South Dakota, uh, South uh South Dakota, San Diego State aren't weren't even listening to the American because they're gonna wait for something like a Big 12 or a pack to come calling eventually.
- 45:13SPEAKER_07: Uh so it's just interesting to watch the politics unfold, but the Big 12 is good and we're I'm excited for the new party.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: There's nothing to worry about as of right now.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: So um that's it for around college football, around the Big 12.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: Uh always fun to talk about these other games taking place.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: But let's get into a little shorter talk and tech breakdown.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna talk about some of the this is where we talk about the lower sports or not the lower sports, I shouldn't say that, the the smaller sports on campus, you know, the the ones that don't get uh all as much love as you know the footballs and the basketballs of the world.
- 45:47SPEAKER_03: Uh let's start with soccer.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: Uh a couple tough losses for the soccer team after starting off really solid.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: Um uh they they go down to Baylor and to UT.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, just a couple heartbreakers after you start off the season really good.
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, you move on from it.
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: You you hate to lose to these teams, but you got Oklahoma State up next on the seventh, and uh you try to build up something that you had earlier.
- 46:10SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, heart heartbreak's the word to use.
- 46:13SPEAKER_07: They they they weren't it wasn't exactly a blowout or anything, they were tight games.
- 46:16SPEAKER_07: Uh, but coming off of that blowout against OEU, it's just disappointing to see us respond to uh a couple of our biggest rivals and just you know drop the ball.
- 46:26SPEAKER_07: You know, we're we were feeling pretty high about this team, thinking that they should be ranked in the top 25.
- 46:30SPEAKER_07: But you know, now they need to start putting it back together.
- 46:33SPEAKER_07: It's because the the conference record isn't great right now, and we think the team's just better than what they what they're putting out.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean this next game's against Oklahoma State.
- 46:41SPEAKER_03: It's at home in the walker.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, we already crushed OU and we beat K-State in the Walker.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: These two losses were on the road.
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: So hopefully we can get that, you know, home crowd momentum.
- 46:51SPEAKER_03: Get out there if you're uh up in Lubbock and go support the ladies over there.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, you know, you hate to lose, but uh you move on, and the soccer team's still in a good position, still got some great players.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: So uh let's move on to volleyball, the biggest upset uh in a while for the volleyball team.
- 47:09SPEAKER_03: They take down number nine Baylor.
- 47:11SPEAKER_03: They actually they split the series, but uh win the first match.
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: And Baylor's Baylor's a dang good team, man.
- 47:19SPEAKER_03: And uh we went in there down two sets to none, and we finish off winning the last three sets and and upsetting them in Waco.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: Uh that's a big time win for Tony Graystone and and the volleyball team.
- 47:31SPEAKER_07: Yeah, bro, you're talking about number nine, Baylor.
- 47:34SPEAKER_07: We went in there and upset a top 10 team, and it was in Waco.
- 47:37SPEAKER_07: So it's just a huge upset and a huge building stone for this up-and-coming program that's looking to make some progress.
- 47:46SPEAKER_07: And there's no better way to do it than to split a series with such a great team.
- 47:50SPEAKER_07: So we'll take that all day, man.
- 47:52SPEAKER_07: I seriously, if if we can continue to build off of that and try to get more upsets here and there and try to reach a hopefully about a 500 season in conference or better, you know, you gotta feel good about the future.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: You know, you just build off these kind of performances, get those, get that momentum going, and uh, you know, hopefully we pull out a couple more dubs.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: Up next, we have a two-match series with Iowa State in Lubbock at the USA on the 7th and the 8th.
- 48:18SPEAKER_03: So, again, if you are in Lubbock, if you can, if you got some free time, go out, support the ladies, support the other programs.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: Um, finishing off with men's golf.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: They are currently playing in the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville that will go on through Wednesday.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, we have pretty good showing so far.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: Our boy, the Swedish fish himself, Ludwig, is doing really well.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, and the rest of our guys, uh, you know, we're putting up solid performances so far.
- 48:44SPEAKER_07: Love to see it.
- 48:45SPEAKER_07: We love our Swedish fish.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Gotta love it, gotta love it.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: So uh that'll do it for the talk and tech breakdown of this week.
- 48:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna try to do do that, you know, every week.
- 48:55SPEAKER_03: Shout out some of the smaller sports.
- 48:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, but let's get into TCU.
- 48:59SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about the Horn Frogs, talk about Matt Wells, a four-in-one Texas tech team playing the TCU Horn Frogs.
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, that is Saturday, October 9th, 6 p.m.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: Night game on ESPN, Jones ATT Stadium, Lubbock, Texas.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: TCU currently a one and a half point favorite right now.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, but man, that's another night game in the Jones.
- 49:24SPEAKER_07: It is a blackout game under the Lubbock lights.
- 49:28SPEAKER_07: Dude, this is the perfect opportunity to reclaim being scary in Lubbock at nights against a good TCU team, or at least a very solid one.
- 49:39SPEAKER_07: They are favored over us after all, even though we have the better record and just coming off a conference win.
- 49:44SPEAKER_07: I do like that line though.
- 49:46SPEAKER_07: I mean, uh, it's I'm very much okay with that.
- 49:48SPEAKER_07: It sounds like it's a dead even game in Vegas, and I'll take those odds right now.
- 49:52SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna be there, I'll be bringing the energy, and I I feel good about it.
- 49:56SPEAKER_07: If we can cause some havoc and force some turnovers like UT did, I feel good about our chances, especially with the way we've been taking care of the ball.
- 50:02SPEAKER_07: We haven't been turning it over much.
- 50:04SPEAKER_07: So if we win the turnover battle, that's just a huge edge over TCU.
- 50:07SPEAKER_07: I know that's a very tired saying, but it's definitely the truth if you watch the UT game.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 50:13SPEAKER_03: And I mean, you know, we had all these injuries last week.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, it looks like at least some of those guys that were hurt last week are gonna play this week.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells hasn't uh said anything about any of them, but he expects a few of them to be back, didn't name any, so we don't know if that's gonna be an Eric Azukama or a Dawson Deaton back or anything like that.
- 50:31SPEAKER_03: So hopefully Taj Brooks is getting back.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: He's had about two weeks now to rest that lower leg injury.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: So hopefully, you know, just adding to our running back depth.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: But as of right now, we're not sure on uh guys that got hurt in the West Virginia game, like Reggie Pearson.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: That would be a tough loss.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, he had a great game.
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then Koseye Eldridge as well.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: Uh Demarcus Fields, we can we could love to have back.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: Malik Dunlap.
- 50:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh, we just need to get some of these guys back because you know, we're gonna have to start digging into the freshmen and the sophomores a little more than what we originally planned on doing.
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, man, you know, I uh TCU two and two on the year losses to uh SMU in Texas, wins against Cal and Duquesne, the mighty Duquesne Duquesneers.
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: Uh so I really TCU doesn't have that good win yet this year.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, they've lost to uh and and these games are tight, like SMU is a tight game, Texas was a tight game, but they didn't pull them out, and so they've only had a couple wins against some bad teams, so it's kind of tough to judge this TCU team right now.
- 51:31SPEAKER_07: Yeah, if Cal's your best win, your resume is very weak because Cal stinks, Cal's really bad.
- 51:37SPEAKER_07: Um, but it's it's still a Gary Patterson TCU.
- 51:40SPEAKER_07: And yes, they haven't been that awesome over the years, but they've still been beating us, so it's it'll be time for us to bounce back.
- 51:47SPEAKER_07: And I really do hope.
- 51:49SPEAKER_07: Obviously, I hope everyone does, is that our our injuries are marked down this this week.
- 51:54SPEAKER_07: You would hope after a few weeks of these guys being out.
- 51:57SPEAKER_07: We know that some of the ones are obviously not coming back like a Tyler Shuck.
- 52:01SPEAKER_07: Um, but I I hope everybody else is able to hopefully make the work their way back in.
- 52:06SPEAKER_07: But obviously, you don't want to force anything that would cause them to be out even longer.
- 52:10SPEAKER_07: Um, I I feel good about yet another week of working with the the offense that we know we have to work with, you know, with a Henry Columbi quarterback and perhaps a lack of easy in Tosh Brooks uh uh offense in general.
- 52:24SPEAKER_07: So I I feel good about it.
- 52:26SPEAKER_07: And I and something to think about, and I know this is more of a non-tangible, is this is Sonny Cumbie's first game against TCU since he departed.
- 52:35SPEAKER_07: And I don't think there's a single team on this list that Sonny Cumby would rather beat more than his former coach or his former boss, Gary Patterson.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is the Sonny Cumby revenge game, baby.
- 52:48SPEAKER_03: This is where he pulls out what and and really the whole thing of Sonny Cumby at TCU, he was co-offensive coordinator with Doug Meachum for a while.
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: Then Gary Patterson never really gave him the reins to do what he does, and that's something that is completely different from Matt Wells.
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells, as soon as Sonny Cumbey was hired, said, Hey, this is your offense.
- 53:09SPEAKER_03: We're gonna live and die by you.
- 53:11SPEAKER_03: You know, you're gonna call the plays.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: This is your offense to run.
- 53:15SPEAKER_03: That's something Gary Patterson was never okay with doing.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: And, you know, to his credit, Gary Patterson, you know, has the resume to show that he, you know, can take the full control.
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, I think Sonny Cumby will have something to prove this game.
- 53:28SPEAKER_03: And I think uh he knows Henry Columbi, he likes him.
- 53:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, he likes his weapons that he does have.
- 53:34SPEAKER_03: We will have Sir Roderick Thompson again.
- 53:36SPEAKER_03: Caitlin Geiger has been fantastic the last few games.
- 53:39SPEAKER_03: The young guys are getting in there and getting involved.
- 53:41SPEAKER_03: Loick Fungi just had a coming out party.
- 53:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, he still has weapons, even if we are missing Eric Ezukama for another week.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, the we have guys that can make these plays and and you know, potentially pull out a dub here.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: So uh I know I know Sonny Cumbee and TJ Storman, who came in transferred from TCU, both of them are gonna have that in their minds.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: You know, it's not that it's not something that you can just like not talk about and not think about.
- 54:06SPEAKER_03: You know, you just spent seven years of your life there, you know, you're gonna think about it.
- 54:11SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Gary Patterson is not thinking the same thing, like it's it's much different since since uh uh Sonny Cummy was the coordinator who felt like he just wasn't getting his due at TCU, so he was looking for somewhere to go, and he got to go back to his alma mater.
- 54:24SPEAKER_07: So that's really it's so it's like a double meaning, you know.
- 54:26SPEAKER_07: He gets to go from his new job to beat him, but also he's winning for his school, and it's the first conference game at home this year, so that's gonna be it's gonna be a rock and jones since we're coming off that dub.
- 54:37SPEAKER_07: I really do think this is gonna be a great crowd, especially since it's at night, it's gonna be a blackout.
- 54:41SPEAKER_07: Our record is pretty good.
- 54:42SPEAKER_07: So I feel good about the energy coming back in this game.
- 54:45SPEAKER_07: And I don't know if TCU's played in that environment yet.
- 54:48SPEAKER_07: I I don't think they have, I don't think they played in a uh uh environment this hostile this season yet.
- 54:52SPEAKER_07: So that'd be gets another bonus for us.
- 54:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:55SPEAKER_03: We're gonna see how they respond.
- 54:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, TCU, we we do talk about the defense.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: Uh it's stellar, but it's not amazing.
- 55:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh, besides the Duquesne game, they've been giving up about 32 points a game, which is significant, you know.
- 55:07SPEAKER_03: Cal put up 32 on them, uh UT put up 30, I think 32 on them.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: Uh SMU put up 34 on them.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: So they're giving up points.
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, it's not like they're completely shutting down offenses.
- 55:19SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I comparing them to West Virginia, I'd probably say West Virginia still has the better defense.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: Not saying the TCU's defense is any slouch by any means, but uh teams have found a way to score on them.
- 55:31SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I I think I think we can do that.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: And I think if Sonny Cumby pulls out a great game like what he did in uh the first half and the fourth quarter of of the West Virginia game, I think we have a lot, uh a pretty good shot at this one.
- 55:44SPEAKER_07: You know, what if my memory serves right?
- 55:47SPEAKER_07: Last year, what really killed us is we let Max Duggan, the freaking quarterback, run all over us.
- 55:52SPEAKER_07: And the good news is our run defense has been pretty good.
- 55:55SPEAKER_07: I mean, our our run defense against West Virginia was pretty awesome.
- 55:57SPEAKER_07: I know the UT game is a bit of an outlier in that sense with Bijan Robinson.
- 56:01SPEAKER_07: B.
- 56:01SPEAKER_07: John Robinson's a different kind of beast, but um, and and plus we just played so bad, and that was not Sonny's fault in that game either, which is another plus to look at.
- 56:09SPEAKER_07: Uh, but we we shot down Letty Brown in the West Virginia game.
- 56:12SPEAKER_07: Letty Brown didn't get to do much, and Letty Brown's awesome.
- 56:14SPEAKER_07: Like that guy is no slouch, he's one of the best in the conference.
- 56:17SPEAKER_07: So I feel pretty good about stopping Max Duggan in the run if that's gonna be an issue.
- 56:22SPEAKER_07: So I I feel like there's just a lot of pluses going our way this season against TCU.
- 56:28SPEAKER_07: It's gonna be a tight game.
- 56:29SPEAKER_07: I don't think it'll be a blowout either way.
- 56:31SPEAKER_07: So these games always seem to come down to the wire with the frogs.
- 56:35SPEAKER_07: So I I feel I feel pretty good about our chances, man.
- 56:38SPEAKER_07: I I want to see us get this dub in the Jones, it'll do wonders for the Jones, man.
- 56:43SPEAKER_07: We gotta make that place scary again.
- 56:44SPEAKER_07: That was that was what make my that's that's what made Mike Leach so good, is he won at home.
- 56:49SPEAKER_07: So Matt Wells needs to replicate that and let's get that play scary again.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's something Kingsbury could never do.
- 56:56SPEAKER_03: He can never win the big one at home and and you know get the crowd involved, and he would lose big games at home and just couldn't pull it out.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: So uh hopefully Matt Wells kind of changes that narrative as the season goes on.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, I I'm glad you brought up Max Stugggan because he's back again.
- 57:11SPEAKER_03: He's going, he's the starting quarterback still for TCU.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: And dude can run, dude can escape the pocket.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: He's a he's a quarterback that really we haven't really played a running quarterback this season.
- 57:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, Casey Thompson can get out there, but he kind of stayed in the pocket.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: That UT game, like you said, I'm hoping is more of just an outlier.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: But it's it's it's hard to give analysis for this Texas Tech team because we've seen opposite ends of the spectrum, man.
- 57:38SPEAKER_03: We've seen uh an SFA game and a UT game where we didn't come prepared, and then we've seen you know, this West Virginia game where we look motivated and we look like a dang good team.
- 57:47SPEAKER_03: So Houston and Houston, you know, second half Houston was great, second half FIU was great.
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, it's just gonna come down to what our team pulls out and then how we if we stay motivated and the the play calling and the scheme and uh you know all your normal things that you that you think about going into this game.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, we not only have to worry about Max Duggan running on us, uh, they have a pretty good running back in Zach Evans, a guy that's averaging 7.8 yards a carry this season so far.
- 58:16SPEAKER_03: So he is awesome.
- 58:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, if you don't know his story, we kind of talked about it in the offseason a little bit, but uh this is a guy who was originally gonna go to Georgia, I believe, and was recruited to be an I mean, he was a five-star guy and had some issues.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: I think uh I don't he may have gotten in some trouble or anything, decommitted from a few areas and then ended up at TCU.
- 58:39SPEAKER_03: So he's a talented guy, and he's a guy that we have to watch as well.
- 58:42SPEAKER_03: Um, and hopefully it's gonna end up being more of a Letty Brown situation than a B.
- 58:47SPEAKER_03: John Robinson situation.
- 58:49SPEAKER_07: It's 100% the year of the quarterback, uh the running back in the Big 12, is not the year of the quarterback, it's the year of the running back.
- 58:55SPEAKER_07: Uh seems every team we're playing as a scary quarterback.
- 58:58SPEAKER_07: That makes, I mean, God, I keep saying quarterback, running back.
- 59:01SPEAKER_07: That makes three in a row.
- 59:03SPEAKER_07: I mean, that we we we had Bijan, Letty, and now Evans.
- 59:06SPEAKER_07: Oh my gosh.
- 59:08SPEAKER_07: But hey, like like you said, I hope it's more of a Letty Brown situation.
- 59:11SPEAKER_07: Uh, because I don't uh even though Zach Evans is great, he's not Bijan Robinson.
- 59:16SPEAKER_07: So, because I'm sure B.
- 59:17SPEAKER_07: John Robinson's gonna start being an Heisman uh talk.
- 59:19SPEAKER_07: So, like we keep saying, we keep hoping the Longhorn game is an outlier, but I I still feel good about the way our defense has responded.
- 59:26SPEAKER_07: I think they still have a whole year to prove themselves again because they did get embarrassed.
- 59:30SPEAKER_07: So, and they gotta keep playing for Matt Wells, like you were we mentioned in the West Virginia game.
- 59:34SPEAKER_07: Um, I I like the word you used was motivated.
- 59:37SPEAKER_07: I just hope that applies to the defense, especially.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man, no doubt.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, the it's it's rushing attacks all over the place in the Big 12.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, we get we gotta stop them.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: And uh it starts with the defensive line, it starts with guys like Jalen Hutchings, it starts with guys like Tony Bradford and Tyree Wilson being able to stop the line of scrimmage and not letting them you know take off for these huge runs and and uh you know pass outs, drop downs, and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_03: So uh the the thing with with TCU is their defense, though.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_03: Uh their offense, you know, has been it they showed flashes of being pretty decent, a solid ground game.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, but this defense is really good.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_03: They're uh their cornerback, they have uh uh Travius Hodges Tomlinson, uh Ladanian's uh nephew, I believe.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: Uh so I shut down corner by all means.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_03: Um, and then you got guys, uh linebackers like uh D Winters and uh guys on the defensive line like Oshawn Mathis and Dylan Horton, guys that are are really good.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: Uh so we're gonna have to work our way around it, kind of pull out the same kind of stuff that we did um uh against West Virginia.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_07: For sure.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_07: I these are probably very comparable defenses between West Virginia and TCU with uh talent-wise.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_07: So it's it's gonna be interesting to see if we can put together another good offensive plan against them.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_07: And like we we already touched on this before, that we think this is gonna be the sunny game.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_07: And I think we're gonna see some pretty cool plays.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm hoping so.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: I'm hoping not too much trickery because we don't want to pull out a whole first uh first possession against West Virginia, Caitlin Geiger throwing an interception hole deal.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, I think if we play our game, if we uh we know Sunny or well, we know Henry Columbia enough uh to know his limitations and and what he succeeds at.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, if we pull out the big plays like we did against West Virginia, I think we'll be okay uh here in this one.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_03: You got a score prediction?
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna roll with what you know.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: I I pulled a little uh reverse psychology here against West Virginia, put predicted a West Virginia win.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: Turns out Texas Tech won that game.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna do that again here.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: And no, I am not rooting for TCU to win this game.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_03: I am most definitely rooting for Texas Tech to win this game, but I am gonna say TCU 28, Texas Tech 27 in a one-point win for TCU, and that's my reverse psychology here going on.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_07: Hey, I appreciate that because as a fan, the entire result of the game is on you and what you do.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_07: Exactly.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_07: I understand you got you gotta keep doing what we're doing to keep the dub.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go 31-28, Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: Gotta love it, gotta love it, my man.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_03: I I I 1000% hope I'm wrong, and I 1000 hope you're right.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_03: But we'll just have to see.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_03: So, you know, sports fans are weird.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_03: We think we affect the game in any way.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, if you obviously obviously, if you're a fan at the game, you do affect the game.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_03: But me sitting on my couch, I'm not doing anything.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_03: I'm sitting over here on Twitter tweeting about it.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, no, I'm not doing anything.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_03: And my, you know, ridiculous sports fandom think I have something to do with it.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_03: So that's my score prediction, and I'm standing by it.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_07: Well, I hope mine is the correct one.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_07: And I think we've probably wasted our listeners' time enough, man.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_07: We want to bring it home.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_03: I did have a couple shouts out before we go song of the week here.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, shouts out Cliff Kingsbury.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_03: Shouts out to the Arizona Cardinals and Cliff Kingsbury, who are four and oh, one of the two undefeated teams left in the NFL.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: Cliff's making moves, man.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_03: We always root for Cliff, so I want to do that shout out.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_07: Love seeing it, man.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_07: He's he's a red raider to the to the bone.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_07: So I love seeing it as well.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_03: And then second shout out to the hometown squad.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: UTSA.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: Look at them.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_03: Bunch of AP voters are out here being cowards and not ranking the roadrunners.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_03: They need to stop it, they need to rank the roadrunners, they deserve it.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_07: I was about to say, I was about to put a hole through my wall saying, right, rank the runners, you cowards.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_07: They deserve it, man.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_07: They are undefeated, and I love seeing it, man.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_07: They they are just rocking and rolling.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_07: And I hope I hope they can have a special season because this is a season to prove something.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_07: Maybe they can make their move up to the American conference or something because man, it's it's cool.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_07: It's cool to see the runners do well.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_03: No doubt, no doubt.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_03: So I want to do a quick shout-out to them.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_03: And also, one more shout-out that you're not gonna love.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, I kicked your ass in fantasy this week.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_03: Relax.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_03: Why the heck?
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_03: Why does this team be included on your ass?
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_03: That is private information.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_03: I didn't, I didn't, I didn't permit it.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_03: Y'all gotta understand this.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: Y'all gotta understand that Tristan got destroyed by yours truly this week in fantasy.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_03: And uh no, you you're not done yet because I still have Justin Herbert and Darren Waller playing tonight, and I hope to ice you, my friend.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_07: You know what?
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_07: I take the ices with pride and honor.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_07: So if I'm iced, I'm ice, but I'm just a little offended that you had to bring this up on our our safe place podcast.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_02: No, this is no safe place.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_02: I have to get there because you because I pulled it out and I've got to talk a little mess.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_07: Whatever.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_07: Can we just do the song of the week already?
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_07: That's it.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_07: We're doing song of the week.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_03: Go ahead, your turn.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_07: So my song of the week is one I'm surprised I haven't done yet, man.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_07: And the reason why it comes to my mind is because I'm going to Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_07: This is a song that always kind of reminds me of that place.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_07: I'm doing South Side of Heaven by Ryan Bingham.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_07: And it's just it's if you listen to it, it sounds like West Texas, it's its most popular song, but it's a beautifully written song, and it just brings you back to Lubbock.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_07: And I can't wait to get there this weekend.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_07: I'll be there early, I'll be there on Thursday.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_07: If y'all see me, say hey, and uh, let's get a dub at and the Jones.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_03: Very nice, man.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_03: Another one.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, you you always love the Lubbock songs, you always love the West Texas stuff.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, so that's a good one that you chose.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_03: My song of the week.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, I I was at the LSU game this past week.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_03: I am living in Baton Rouge, so we have the opportunity to go to these games, uh, which is cool.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_03: You know, LSU lost, but you know, I'm not I'm I'm not heartbroken about it.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you know, going to these games and being in Baton Rouge, uh, you you don't feel disconnected from Texas Tech, but you definitely uh there's just not a lot of tech fans here, to be honest.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_03: So my song of the week kind of speaks to that.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_03: It is, I've already done a Bill Withers song, but I'm doing another one right here, just the two of us, because I feel like it's just me and my fiance rooting on Texas Tech here in this whole city.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_03: Uh, and after going to that game, I get uh that LSU game, you know, it's just it's just a different vibe, man.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_03: And I miss Texas Tech, I miss Lubbock.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, just the two of us by Bill Withers kind of speaks to one where my head's at right now.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_03: So that's my song of the week.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_03: Just the two of us.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_06: We can make it if we try just the two of us.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_08: Just the two of us.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_06: Just the two of us building catchers in the sky.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_07: Poetically put, my friend, I feel I know how you feel whenever I lived in Nashville.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_07: So it's it's it's a tough going, but uh we we appreciate your your cheers from Lysiana.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_03: So let's end her off like we always do with some plugs.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_03: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_03: Tristan is at Tristan Mick.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_03: I'm at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_03: Follow the pod on Twitter at talking tech pod.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_03: Follow our songs of the week playlist on Spotify and Apple Music.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, let's hope we wreck TCU this weekend.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_03: Let's start off five and one.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_03: Let's play the song again.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_03: I want to do everything, I want to be happy like I am right now.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_03: I'm happy right now.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_03: So uh we're gonna end it off always wreck em tech.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_05: Wreck'em tech.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_05: Uh wow.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_05: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_05: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_00: I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_01: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan thanks for coming out.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_04: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_04: Uh we fed off of it.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_04: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_04: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
