- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:14Good to have you company. Thanks for tapping on play and
- 0:17inviting me into your day. Busy or spacious, However it
- 0:21looks, and today we are in the very last day of October,
- 0:27November, just around the corner.
- 0:29Where has the year gone? I don't even know.
- 0:34I don't know when you decide that it's time to start
- 0:37decorating for Christmas. I was well, a few weeks ago when
- 0:40I was collecting my army uniforms.
- 0:42People there were saying, Padre tell me when is it not too early
- 0:46to put up the Christmas tree and well, they were not happy when I
- 0:49suggested late November. So I don't know when your
- 0:51tradition is. If you want to put up your
- 0:53Christmas tree at the beginning of November, knock yourself out.
- 0:56I'm sure the shops somewhere have already started decorating.
- 1:00So it's a Tuesday and this is a Tuesday where we are reading the
- 1:04second last chapter of the book of Acts and this is when Paul is
- 1:09going to be tossed around at sea.
- 1:12I hope this is not a week where you are going to be sailing,
- 1:15because if you are, this story is going to sound awfully
- 1:19ominous as the weather gets a little bit nasty.
- 1:26So join. Me friends, as we read together
- 1:29Acts Chapter 27. When the time came, we set sail
- 1:40for Italy. Paul and several other prisoners
- 1:43were placed in the custody of a Roman officer named Julius, a
- 1:47captain of the Imperial Regiment.
- 1:50Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was also with us.
- 1:55We left on a ship whose home port was Adramiteum, on the
- 1:59northwest coast of the province of Asia.
- 2:01It was scheduled to make several stops at ports along the coast
- 2:04of the province the next day when we docked inside on Julius,
- 2:10was very kind to Paul and let him go ashore to visit with
- 2:13friends so they could provide for his needs.
- 2:17Putting out the sea from there, we encountered strong headwinds
- 2:21that made it difficult to keep the ship on course, so we sailed
- 2:24north of Cyprus between the island and the mainland.
- 2:28Keeping to the open sea, we passed along the coast of
- 2:31Sicilia and Pamphylia, landing at Myra in the province of
- 2:36Lycia. There the commanding officer
- 2:39found an Egyptian ship from Alexandria that was bound for
- 2:42Italy, and he put us on board. We had several days of slow
- 2:47sailing and after great difficulty we finally neared
- 2:52Snyders. But the wind was against us.
- 2:55So we sailed across the Crete and along the sheltered coast of
- 2:59the island, past the Cape of Salmon.
- 3:03We struggled along the coast with great difficulty and
- 3:06finally arrived at fair havens near the town of Lascia.
- 3:11We had lost a lot of time. The weather was becoming
- 3:14dangerous for sea travel because it was so late in the fall and
- 3:18Paul spoke to the ship's officers about it.
- 3:21Men, he said. I believe there is trouble ahead
- 3:25if we go on shipwreck, loss of cargo and danger to our lives as
- 3:30well. But the officer in charge of the
- 3:33prisoners listen more to the ship's captain and the owner
- 3:36than to Paul. And since Fair Havens was an
- 3:39exposed harbour, a poor place to spend the winter, most of the
- 3:43crew wanted to go on to Phoenix, farther up the coast of Crete,
- 3:47and spend the winter there. Phoenix was a good harbour with
- 3:51only a southwest and NW exposure.
- 3:55When a light wind began blowing from the South, the sailors
- 3:59thought they could make it, so they pulled up anchor and sailed
- 4:02close to the shore of Crete. But the weather changed abruptly
- 4:07and a wind of typhoon strength called the northeaster burst
- 4:12across the island and blew us out to sea.
- 4:15The sailors couldn't turn the ship into the wind, so they gave
- 4:18up and let it run before the Gale who sailed along the
- 4:22sheltered side of a small island named Corda, where with great
- 4:27difficulty we hoisted aboard the lifeboat being towed behind us.
- 4:31Then the sailors bound ropes around the hull of the ship to
- 4:35strengthen it. They were afraid of being driven
- 4:38across to the sandbars of Certus off the African coast, so they
- 4:42lowered the sea anchor to slow the ship and were driven before
- 4:46the wind. The next day, as Gale force
- 4:50winds continued to batter the ship, the crew began throwing
- 4:54the cargo overboard. The following day they even took
- 4:58some of the ship's gear and threw it overboard.
- 5:00The terrible storm raged for many days, blotting out the sun
- 5:05and the stars, until at last all hope was gone.
- 5:10No one had eaten for a long time.
- 5:13Finally, Paul called the crew together and said, Men, you
- 5:17should have listened to me in the 1st place and not left
- 5:20Crete. You would have avoided all this
- 5:23damage and loss. But take courage.
- 5:26None of you will lose your lives, even though the ship will
- 5:30go down. For last night, an Angel of the
- 5:33God to whom I belong and to whom I serve stood beside me and he
- 5:38said, Don't be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial
- 5:43before Caesar. What's more, God in his goodness
- 5:48has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.
- 5:51So take courage, for I believe God it will be just as he said.
- 5:58But we will be shipwrecked on an island about midnight on the
- 6:0214th night of the storm. As we were being driven across
- 6:06the Sea of Adria, the sailors sensed land was near.
- 6:10They dropped a waited line and found the water was 120 feet
- 6:14deep. But a little later, they
- 6:16measured again and found it was only 90 feet deep.
- 6:20At this rate, they were afraid we would soon be driven against
- 6:23the rocks along the shore. So they threw out four anchors
- 6:27from the back of the ship and prayed for daylight.
- 6:30Then the sailors tried to abandon ship.
- 6:33They lowered the lifeboat as though they were going to put
- 6:36out anchors from the front of the ship.
- 6:38But Paul said to the commanding officer and the soldiers, you
- 6:41will all die unless the sailors stay aboard.
- 6:46So the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat and let it drift
- 6:49away. Just as day was dawning, Paul
- 6:53urged everyone to eat. You have been so worried that
- 6:56you haven't touched food for two weeks, he said.
- 7:00Please eat something now for your own good, for not a hair of
- 7:04your heads will perish. Then he took some bread, gave
- 7:09thanks to God before them all, and broke off a piece and ate
- 7:12it. Then everyone was encouraged and
- 7:14began to eat. All 276 of us were on board.
- 7:20After eating, the crew lightened the ship further by throwing the
- 7:23cargo of wheat overboard. When morning dawned, they didn't
- 7:28recognize the coastline, but they saw a Bay with the beach
- 7:31and wondered if they could get to shore by running the ship
- 7:34aground. So they cut off the anchors and
- 7:37left them in the sea. Then they lowered the rudders,
- 7:40raised the for sail and headed towards shore, but they hit a
- 7:45Shoal and ran the ship aground too soon.
- 7:48The bow of the ship stuck fast while the stern was repeatedly
- 7:52smashed by the force of the waves and began to break apart.
- 7:57The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to make sure they
- 7:59didn't swim ashore and escape, but the commanding officer
- 8:03wanted to spare Paul, so he didn't let them carry out their
- 8:06plan. Then he ordered all who could
- 8:08swim to jump overboard first and make for land.
- 8:17The others held onto planks or debris from the.
- 8:19Broken ship so everyone escaped safely to shore.
- 8:29Jesus, it can be hard to trust you sometimes.
- 8:32When we are on board a ship and we feel as though everything is
- 8:36going to be lost, and you tell us that we are safe, Gee, it's
- 8:41hard to hear your words over the din of the storm in our lives
- 8:45Sometimes, Jesus, I pray for perspective that the volumes of
- 8:53all the different voices are appropriately calibrated.
- 8:57So when the world is shouting its priorities at us, may that
- 9:01be dialed down. And when your Kingdom speaks to
- 9:06us, may that be amplified, so that your voice is so convincing
- 9:11that we are not tempted to listen to the voice of the world
- 9:14around us. Thank you that you give us a
- 9:19different way of being, That when the world shouts at us, you
- 9:23are useless unless you do these things.
- 9:28That your voice that says you are my beloved child may ring
- 9:32louder. And when the world screams about
- 9:36the importance of the now, may we hear your voice that speaks
- 9:41gently about the promises of eternity.
- 9:44We are so safely held in your embrace.
- 9:50Please continue to attune our ears to Your voice.
- 9:55We pray. All of this in your mighty name,
- 9:57Jesus. Amen.
