Transcript
- 0:00Break fix podcast is all about capturing the living history of people from
- 0:04all over the auto sphere, from wrench turners and racers to artists, authors,
- 0:09designers, and everything in between.
- 0:11Our goal is to inspire a new generation of petrol heads that wonder.
- 0:16How did they get that job or become that person?
- 0:19The road to success is paved by all of us because everyone has a story.
- 0:28What's going on everybody tonight.
- 0:30It's your host, Brad.
- 0:31And with me as always is Eric.
- 0:34Joining us tonight for an exclusive interview is Ed Sheets
- 0:37from Bold City Motorsports.
- 0:39Maybe you've been following them for years at Bold City Motorsports on the
- 0:42Instagram, or maybe this is the first time you've heard of this Jacksonville,
- 0:45Florida based German auto shop.
- 0:47Either way, Ed's going to share the Bold City origin, which
- 0:50happens to start in Maryland,
- 0:56as well as clue us in on some exciting future projects they have in store.
- 1:00Welcome to the show, Ed.
- 1:01Thanks, guys.
- 1:02Appreciate that.
- 1:03Glad to be here.
- 1:04All right, Ed, so let's get into it.
- 1:06Tell us about your origin story there, being a Marylander.
- 1:10Gosh, being a Ravens fan, you mean.
- 1:12Relocated, yeah.
- 1:13So, started in Maryland.
- 1:15A lot of people would probably know my background through New German performance.
- 1:21And GP racing.
- 1:22So really started, uh, in the early nineties in Maryland, in Hartford County,
- 1:28let's say Bel Air, you know, area met up with some VW guys started hanging out.
- 1:34We actually formed a little VW club, which was kind of fun.
- 1:36That was in 1993, 94.
- 1:39We were having a lot of work done on our cars at a couple of the shops that were in
- 1:42the area that were just kind of pop it up.
- 1:44Dave Graff, my former partner and myself kind of got together and said,
- 1:48man, you know, the shops that are out there aren't really doing such
- 1:51a great job for the enthusiasts.
- 1:53If we put something together, got some good technicians, got,
- 1:56you know, a good foundation.
- 1:58Based in the VW scene, really, you know, putting it out there in a genuine way.
- 2:04We could really make something of it.
- 2:06We're both kind of coming from retail backgrounds.
- 2:08I was in the Marine industry.
- 2:09They've managed the audio connection, car stereo shop and
- 2:12performance center over in Towson.
- 2:15We got together and the rest is history.
- 2:17So we had a really good run.
- 2:19I was part of NGP as Dave's partner for 10 years, sold my
- 2:24half of the business in 2007.
- 2:27That's when John Martin came in, another great guy, mutual friend of ours.
- 2:31So then I kind of stepped out of the scene for a few years, relocated for a corporate
- 2:35position, ended up here in Jacksonville.
- 2:37But you know, when you're in the car business, and when you are
- 2:41such a diehard enthusiast, you never get it out of your blood.
- 2:45Probably the best story for me as far as being an enthusiast is my honeymoon.
- 2:49My wife and I have been together since we were teenagers.
- 2:52We were high school sweethearts.
- 2:53So for our honeymoon, we went to, uh, Europe for two weeks, but we started
- 2:57off in Germany and actually spent the first couple of days of our honeymoon
- 3:01in uh, Wolfsburg, you know, VW museum.
- 3:04It was before the auto stop, unfortunately.
- 3:06But so yeah, you could say it's, it runs, you know, pretty deep.
- 3:11We had a couple of kids, you know, my son was, became a teenager.
- 3:15He was almost ready to start driving.
- 3:16We decided to go out and pick up a VW and build it for him.
- 3:20And I started to reconnect with a few VW friends.
- 3:23So I really wanted to come back in to the scene and start something
- 3:27that would be, I guess you could say like a 30, 000 foot view, right?
- 3:32So stepping back from the micro focus on VW and Audi kind of go all German
- 3:39cars, you really all, you know, car enthusiasts, something that would support
- 3:44the motorsport theme, getting people interested in motorsports, having a place
- 3:49for people to come hang out and car clubs to get together and put a car on a lift
- 3:53and do a lunch and learn or whatever.
- 3:55The idea came about for Bold City Motorsport.
- 3:58Started Bold City, uh, I guess going on about three years ago now.
- 4:02We basically build a lot of project cars.
- 4:04We try to support the local scene as much as we can.
- 4:08We organize get togethers and events and, you know, support.
- 4:11Local track days and just whatever we can do to really kind of pay it forward.
- 4:16And now my son's in his second year of college.
- 4:19Now he's 19 years old.
- 4:20You know, it's fun to see that next generation get involved and
- 4:24get interested in motor sports, interested in what I consider kind
- 4:29of doing things the right way.
- 4:31I won't get into the semantics of the different types of car scenes and whatnot,
- 4:35but just genuinely appreciating the cars for what they are, the engineering aspect
- 4:39of it, the actual motorsport aspect of it.
- 4:43And a lot of that starts with respecting.
- 4:46Cars respecting what they're capable of and just the enjoyment of it as a whole.
- 4:53And again, if we do it right, the future is bright.
- 4:56We, we, it's kind of up to us at this point to pay it forward and
- 5:00present things the right way and really support it the best we can.
- 5:03You know, it's always sunny in Philadelphia, but I don't know
- 5:05that that's necessarily true.
- 5:07It's always.
- 5:08It's pretty much sunny in Jacksonville.
- 5:10So you've got the luxury of being close by to some, some very famous tracks, rubbling
- 5:15road, road Atlanta, Sebring, et cetera.
- 5:17They're pretty much in your backyard and you've talked about, you know,
- 5:19the track scene and motor sports.
- 5:21And if anybody's followed you on Instagram, we've seen your blue nine 11.
- 5:25So what is your track car of choice?
- 5:27What is your track weapon?
- 5:29Well believe it or not, the car we took to the track the most of the last couple
- 5:33of years was actually a Mark two eight valve GTI, former, uh, SCCA ITB car that
- 5:40came from Frederick, Maryland, just a couple of years ago, momentum car, just,
- 5:44you know, kind of fun to play around on, but it was perfect card to put my
- 5:47son on the track for the first time.
- 5:50Great story with that is taking him to the track, putting him in the car.
- 5:53Of course, I went out and did a couple of stints and then, uh, he goes out
- 5:58and he stays out and he stays out.
- 6:00Then it's a matter of, you know, the timing and all of a sudden
- 6:03we're keeping track of the time and, and, uh, sure enough.
- 6:06His first time on the track, he actually bested my time.
- 6:09So, uh, that was at the firm.
- 6:11That's a local track here.
- 6:12But so the 997 GT3 it's a 997.
- 6:171 GT3 super in love with that car.
- 6:19Just was out in it literally 10 minutes ago, ripping around.
- 6:23I'm excited to get that car actually out on the track.
- 6:25We're doing a few more small tweaks to it.
- 6:27We just got a couple months ago, but that will be the track car
- 6:31of choice moving forward, as well as the road trip car of choice.
- 6:34It's a really cool story.
- 6:36We're going to feature it and kind of expose the car a little bit more on
- 6:39social media here real soon, but 105, 000 miles, excellent condition, one owner
- 6:45car, a lot of people, you know, kind of love, hate the Metzger engine and yeah,
- 6:49it runs great and it's, it's incredible.
- 6:52The design, but you know, it's not good for longevity.
- 6:55This car runs great.
- 6:56We pulled the engine, compression test, leaked down, tidied up a couple small
- 7:01oil leaks, went over the whole thing.
- 7:03It is amazing.
- 7:05The car runs as good as new.
- 7:07That's the track car of choice moving forward, I guess you could say.
- 7:11So a lot of people may also know you for your infamous red R32.
- 7:17I've seen pictures of your car all over, and I know that is
- 7:20recently departed from the shop.
- 7:23So is that a?
- 7:24Pain point for you?
- 7:26Do you miss it?
- 7:27I mean, let's talk about that car a little bit.
- 7:28'cause it is a big part of your backstory.
- 7:30It is, yeah.
- 7:31So oddly enough, I just did a . I prepped for a throwback Thursday
- 7:37by posting some pictures of that car on social media last night.
- 7:40So phenomenal car.
- 7:42Again, that was kind of a reentry point into opening the shop and having fun
- 7:47with cars again on a much higher scale.
- 7:49You know, level, but I found the car up in New Jersey.
- 7:52It had an HPA kit, single turbo kit car ran phenomenal.
- 7:56I mean, it was, I think four 60 at the wheels on pump gas, 70, 000
- 8:02original miles mint condition inside.
- 8:04Now I truly have not personally seen a more mint condition car.
- 8:10And then with all the work that was done, we took it a little bit further.
- 8:12We did differentials front and rear.
- 8:15And a dual disc clutch and a couple of other things.
- 8:18Cause it was really kind of set up a little bit soft, but phenomenal
- 8:21car sold it to a collector in LA.
- 8:24He added it to a, uh, quite an awesome collection of cars, including,
- 8:29uh, Mark 5 R32 turbo and some Porsches and some crazy built BMWs.
- 8:35And it's living a good life.
- 8:38Since you're in the, in the VAG family, going back probably as far
- 8:41as my family has and a lot of other people that are listening to this.
- 8:45Favorite generation of Volkswagen's?
- 8:48If you had to pick one.
- 8:49Oh gosh, well I think we already hit it.
- 8:51A lot of people are going to get mad at me about this.
- 8:55I want to say Mark II because of my affection for the Rally Golf.
- 8:59But to be honest, I mean, And you've probably seen my son's
- 9:03Mark four, you know, Jetta wagon.
- 9:06I really love the Mark four.
- 9:07I it's so easy to engine swap.
- 9:10Uh, I guess the only complaint would be, you know, that you'd have to go R32 or
- 9:15a major swap to get the, um, independent rear, but just such a cool car.
- 9:21They're muscular.
- 9:22They they're so easy to tune.
- 9:24They're so easy to dial in.
- 9:25You don't have to spend weeks and weeks on the track to dial in a Mark four.
- 9:28Right.
- 9:29You guys know that as well as anyone.
- 9:30So yeah, they're very predictable.
- 9:33It's a good chassis.
- 9:34I mean, you know, again, we can talk about my rally golf.
- 9:37It's pretty famous car on its own, but you know, every time I put that
- 9:41car in the lift, it opens a body seat.
- 9:43You know, it's sad but true and that's a rally golf.
- 9:46So, you know, they're soft cars So mark four they really started getting tight.
- 9:51They're a fun platform I might take some heat for it, but it's got
- 9:54to be the mark four very cool So before we get into what's hot and
- 9:58what's new I gotta ask this question sexiest car Oh, gosh, sexiest car.
- 10:06I would almost say that the sexiest car I've ever contemplated would
- 10:13probably be a 48 Buick and that's crazy.
- 10:17That's gone really in a different direction.
- 10:19But as far as body lines on a car that came from the factory.
- 10:25The 48 Buick, I think, is still my all time favorite.
- 10:29It is amazing the things that we have heard, you know,
- 10:32E Type Jags, 365 Daytonas.
- 10:35I mean, people are all over the map, and so it's always a very interesting,
- 10:38you know, kind of knee jerk.
- 10:40What would you have?
- 10:41You know, what is that pinnacle car?
- 10:43Is there anything else you want to add to kind of the background, the background
- 10:46story of Bolt City or anything, any anecdotes, before we move on to really
- 10:49the meat of our conversation for tonight?
- 10:51I would say in general, some of the reasons why we decided to make the
- 10:57investment to move forward with bold city, which is not fully developed.
- 11:00There's a lot of things that we're still working on.
- 11:02There's a lot of things that we're going to be doing with bold city
- 11:04that are very, very exciting, right?
- 11:06We just landed a container of parts from the UK on Friday of last week.
- 11:11So, you know, I'm still playing in some familiar turf with things that
- 11:15I used to do at NGP and, and with.
- 11:17One of the branch off companies that I ran, which was ecode parts, you
- 11:22know, it's good and it's working and it's supporting the positive aspects
- 11:27of the enthusiast base in the area.
- 11:30But, you know, I'm still a bit concerned.
- 11:33I still want to make sure that we're doing the right thing for the younger
- 11:38crowd, people that are coming up.
- 11:40I really liked the way, uh, our local track, the firm Keystone Heights, Florida.
- 11:44I love the way they push the like teenage defensive driving
- 11:48classes, things like that.
- 11:50Right.
- 11:50So I had personal friends of mine that were killed in car accidents.
- 11:55As a teenager, my kids now, my son's 19, my daughter's 16, almost 17.
- 12:01They have friends.
- 12:03That have died in car accidents.
- 12:04I, I really, maybe it's the maturation process.
- 12:07Maybe it's the, you know, it's the age and the life experience, but I think I
- 12:12would like to do a little bit more with really bringing home, you know, there's
- 12:16a place to drive in a certain way.
- 12:18It's so rewarding.
- 12:20It's, it's such a great thing to experience.
- 12:22I remember going, you know, summit point for the first time for a Friday at the
- 12:26track day and there's nothing like it.
- 12:29I'm sorry, but there really isn't.
- 12:31I mean, when you get out on the track and you're doing it the right way you
- 12:34have a, you know, you have a fun ride.
- 12:36It's such a cool thing.
- 12:37I want people to experience that.
- 12:39I want them to enjoy it, but I don't want them to do it on the street.
- 12:41I don't want them to kill themselves or hurt other people.
- 12:44So again, Different stage of life, different mindset, maybe obviously than
- 12:4920 years ago, you know, with NGP or whatever, I love what they're still doing.
- 12:54But I think the point is with bold city, we don't have to worry about
- 12:58covering the rent next month or, We have to sell, you know, 500 exhaust
- 13:03systems to, uh, to make payroll.
- 13:05We're keeping it very, very efficient.
- 13:07We're working very slim.
- 13:09We're building project cars.
- 13:10We're having fun.
- 13:11It's a bit less of a commercialized endeavor, and it's a bit more of a
- 13:15purpose driven, pay it forward endeavor.
- 13:18So I would just leave it at saying, you know, we are selling Euro parts.
- 13:22We're bringing stuff in.
- 13:23We're building project cars.
- 13:24We're finding cool cars and flipping them and turning them
- 13:28back out to the local market.
- 13:30Definitely, you know, follow along.
- 13:31Stay tuned.
- 13:32You know, as everyone says, stay tuned.
- 13:34We have some really cool stuff in the works, some really cool projects
- 13:37and some kind of high profile and influence or people that are going
- 13:41to start being involved with what we're doing for your local shops.
- 13:44I don't want to step on anybody's toes.
- 13:46We have a couple local shops that just opened in the last
- 13:49year here in Jacksonville.
- 13:51I consulted with both the guys that started the shops.
- 13:54I gave them a ton of advice, personal experience.
- 13:56I want them to succeed, support your local shops, have fun with it, do things
- 14:01the right way, and, and we'll be good.
- 14:03We'll be good for another 20 or 30 years.
- 14:05So let's really get into it.
- 14:07Now, as we prepared for this episode, we talked ahead of time
- 14:11and what the listeners don't know.
- 14:13Is that you're taking a step into the world of IT.
- 14:17And what I mean by that is Ed is one of the principal founders of TunerLog.
- 14:23And you guys have heard this application teased for quite a while now, and Ed
- 14:27has kind of a big announcement that he wants to make, and we're going to dig
- 14:30into the product and talk about it.
- 14:31And this is an exclusive relationship here between Bold City and GTM to talk about
- 14:36TunerLog and bring this out into the wild.
- 14:39So Ed, why don't you start us off and tell us.
- 14:41All about the premise of tuner log.
- 14:44Yeah.
- 14:44So it's, it's, it's a big deal.
- 14:46It's, it's actually exciting for me to hear you introduce it in that way.
- 14:49And we have spoken about this isn't exclusive.
- 14:52This is the first time it's publicly being discussed after two years of development.
- 14:58Let's talk about that red R32 for a minute, actually, not unlike
- 15:01many cars that I've had, right?
- 15:04Really great car comes to me with a bunch of work done to it.
- 15:08I do a bunch more work to it.
- 15:10I go to move the car forward after I'm done with the ownership
- 15:13experience, I start to market the car, put it up for sale.
- 15:17Every single person I talked to said, you know, it's an amazing car and I would
- 15:23give you exactly what you're asking.
- 15:25If you had the records, if you had all the documents, if you had the
- 15:28paperwork, I mean, the car has.
- 15:30Well, the differentials I did, so that was fine.
- 15:32But, you know, it had cans, the turbo kit, it had, um, you know, the
- 15:36suspension, brakes, sway bars, everything.
- 15:38So, some parts we can see, some parts we can't see, internal engine
- 15:43parts we can't see, we don't know.
- 15:45What pistons are in the car, what camshafts are in the car, you know,
- 15:48there's a lot of things you say that the, you know, the intake manifold is
- 15:51match ported and it's extrude homes.
- 15:54Well, we can't see inside the intake manifold.
- 15:56So a few triggers like that started to come to me.
- 16:00And then of course, you know, there was a fateful trip with the family
- 16:04where we spent a couple of weeks in the car, driving through California.
- 16:07Reconnected with some awesome friends, you know, Brad Beardo, Matt Crook, um,
- 16:11the guys at 1552 people I had known from the very beginning and, uh, kind
- 16:16of got the, the thoughts flowing.
- 16:18And at the time I had the R32, you know, marketed and I was taking
- 16:22a lot of feedback and interesting observations from that process.
- 16:26And I said, you know, I really would like to work on a legacy project and I really
- 16:31would like it to pertain to improving the experience of owning a vehicle.
- 16:37To everyone.
- 16:39Now, this is no longer VW Audi specific.
- 16:42It's not Porsche specific, which I love.
- 16:45It's not German specific.
- 16:46You know, this is anyone who cares about their vehicle or even cares
- 16:51about the resale value of the vehicle.
- 16:54How can I?
- 16:55Give them something or provide them with some tool or mechanism to actually
- 17:01increase the enjoyment of the ownership and increase the resale value and really
- 17:06the lineage of the vehicle, right?
- 17:08That R32 is a phenomenal car.
- 17:11But if you don't document and carry forward the lineage of what was done,
- 17:14when it was done, how it was done, who installed it, you know, things like that
- 17:19to say that it has camshafts is one thing.
- 17:21What camshafts are they?
- 17:22What brand are they?
- 17:24What grind are they?
- 17:25You know, what's the lift?
- 17:26What's the duration?
- 17:28No one knows.
- 17:29And truthfully, I didn't know.
- 17:30I was told they were a tectonics.
- 17:32Well, great.
- 17:33You know, they make two or three different sets of camshaft.
- 17:36So the idea started to come together to create something that was very
- 17:42easy to use, very smart, intuitive, sensible, but accessible to keep
- 17:50records, to record events in the, in the cars history, something That
- 17:56would transfer from owner to owner.
- 17:58And really the idea of a log book obviously came to mind, right?
- 18:02So I've had plenty of sanctions cars.
- 18:05I've had plenty of cars that have come with log books, whether
- 18:07it be NASA or SCCA or whatever.
- 18:10And again, I have a background in the maritime industry.
- 18:13There's, you know, survey records and log books on engine
- 18:16maintenance and everything else.
- 18:18I had actually started with the idea of building a better mousetrap through
- 18:23creating a better logbook system.
- 18:25But in my mind, I was thinking of actual logbooks, right?
- 18:29Actual printed books, even did some research on how to get books
- 18:32printed, where and everything.
- 18:33So my teenage son jumped in on that and brought that up to the
- 18:3821st century for me real quick.
- 18:40So, uh, we basically turned it into an app.
- 18:43I pulled a lot of experience from my previous corporate position
- 18:48with using Concur, which is an expense program, things like that,
- 18:52that were easy to use that you could take a picture of a receipt.
- 18:56You could upload it, categorize it, save it, transfer it, email it.
- 19:01And then there's, of course, a lot of other programs that
- 19:04we're all influenced by, right?
- 19:05Amazon, eBay, even Angie's List, things like that.
- 19:09So the idea kind of grew and grew, got together about a year and a half ago with
- 19:13a couple local guys here in Jacksonville.
- 19:15They have a company called I Drive Fast.
- 19:17Their names are Thomas and Lucas, great guys.
- 19:19They're doing a lot of stuff.
- 19:20They're on social media.
- 19:21If you go to iDriveFast on Instagram or Facebook.
- 19:25So they actually are a development team as well.
- 19:29So they build websites and they do, um, you know, do apps and things like that.
- 19:34So I contracted with them.
- 19:36We partnered up.
- 19:36There's a lot of synergy there.
- 19:38They did a great job lending that motorsport.
- 19:43Lifestyle kind of thought process having owned a brand new Camaro ZL1, 1LE, M4CS.
- 19:52I mean, these guys are true car guys, really good backgrounds.
- 19:55Also have that technical side that, you know, is necessary with
- 19:58putting this kind of stuff together.
- 20:00So we worked together for about a year.
- 20:02We, you know, the, the beta programs been up and running since January.
- 20:07We're actually going out for public funding starting next week.
- 20:11So we're hoping to have the company launched TunerLog by let's say
- 20:17September, October, and then put the app out after a little bit more
- 20:22development and a few more pieces put together by the end of this year.
- 20:27So what we have ended up with is basically what I would like to describe
- 20:32as a companion to owning a vehicle.
- 20:34Right.
- 20:35And this isn't just a car.
- 20:36It's not just an enthusiast car, but it's a motorcycle, a car, a race car.
- 20:42It's, it's a boat, a jet ski, an RV.
- 20:46I've used it on my portable generator, my new flat screen TV, you know, so
- 20:50anything that you want to keep a unique serial number, you want to keep files,
- 20:57data, pictures of receipts, you Those sorts of things where they can be easily
- 21:02referenced from your phone and app format can also be used from any platform.
- 21:07So right out of the gate, it can be used on any web based platform.
- 21:11So your laptop, your ipad, your phone is already in the app
- 21:15store and beta format android.
- 21:19So it will be, uh, fantastically accessible.
- 21:24The whole point of this is there's no charge for the basic program.
- 21:28Completely free.
- 21:29It's global.
- 21:30It will be available to anyone that has the internet can
- 21:32use this sign up for free.
- 21:34It's going to take literally 10 seconds to sign up.
- 21:37You can add a receipt or a record in five seconds.
- 21:41I mean, it's it's so easy and simply functional that there should be
- 21:46no issues with the entry point.
- 21:48You know, signing up, using the product, sharing it, you know, really
- 21:53getting all the benefits, moving the cars forward or the vehicles forward,
- 21:56buying, selling those sorts of things.
- 21:59So then of course there's a million layers under that, right?
- 22:01But that's the overview of what we've created.
- 22:03So tuner log.
- 22:05So now that you're kind of.
- 22:07Telling the world that this is becoming more generally available and
- 22:10you've already said that it's really designed for the masses and it's got
- 22:14a really low entry point at free.
- 22:16I would assume that there's probably a tier to this with, you
- 22:19know, probably premium features.
- 22:21I don't know if you want to outline those or anything like that, but what I'm more
- 22:24interested in digging into, and I'm sure our listeners are interested in, is Who
- 22:28will be integrating into this platform?
- 22:31Are there any early adopters?
- 22:32Is there anybody on the back end of this thing that would make this process easier?
- 22:36Because it's one thing to go to advanced auto and get a receipt and
- 22:39take a picture of it versus going to NGP and saying, Hey, download
- 22:43your ticket right into my tuner log.
- 22:45There, obviously, there's a lot of things we can't talk about yet.
- 22:49We actually have a fantastic intellectual property attorney that consults with us.
- 22:53So, I've gotten some good guidance on what we can and can't say.
- 22:56But, I can give you some really good basic foundation of what
- 23:00the program's going to do.
- 23:02And it is phenomenal.
- 23:03It's, we're so excited.
- 23:04It's an incredible program, the way it's grown and developed.
- 23:08To be completely transparent, there are logbook apps available.
- 23:12Right?
- 23:12I mean, you can go search in the app store today.
- 23:14There's there's apps that track mileage.
- 23:17There's apps that track maintenance.
- 23:19There's apps that, you know, track spending for tax purposes.
- 23:23So there are little bits and pieces of our concept kind of
- 23:27floating out there in space.
- 23:29No one's ever put the entire ownership experience into one program, right?
- 23:35That's a big deal.
- 23:35But it would take it a step past that.
- 23:38The big difference with tuner log is integration.
- 23:41So you alluded to integrating with partners, very big partners, you
- 23:46know, big players, I should say, in the market with integrating
- 23:50processes such as receipt drop.
- 23:52We want you to be able to go to some of the largest e commerce
- 23:55retailers in the country.
- 23:57We're not going to name the names at the moment, but we want you to
- 24:00be able to, um, to make a purchase.
- 24:02And just as your receipt would be emailed to your inbox, you know, after you
- 24:07complete the purchase, Your email can be dropped right into your cloud storage on
- 24:12your tuner log app, where you can simply go in and drag it into whatever column and
- 24:16categorize it as far as you know, whether it's breaks, oil change, whatever it is.
- 24:20So that's really exciting.
- 24:22And there are some early adopters in line.
- 24:24And again, we can't really put the names out there right now.
- 24:28There's a lot of things still in discussion, but But I think we all know,
- 24:31you know, a lot of the main players in the industry, the people that are
- 24:36doing it right are the people that obviously we want to really launch with.
- 24:39We want people who reflect the genuine motivation to improve
- 24:45the ownership experience.
- 24:46That's what it's all about.
- 24:48So what, what we say with TunerLog is that, you know, we, we want to.
- 24:52Increase the the enjoyment of the vehicle ownership experience as well
- 24:57as increasing the value of the vehicle.
- 25:00So we can do this.
- 25:02It's a free program.
- 25:03The basic program is free for the expense of you taking 10 or 15 seconds to enter
- 25:10a receipt or enter a record every time there's an event with your vehicle.
- 25:14Could literally mean thousands of dollars of additional resale value at the end.
- 25:19So it's a value based program.
- 25:23There always will be value no matter what stage you use the program.
- 25:28There will be a paid premium service.
- 25:31It will only be 5 a month.
- 25:33It'll be launched, you know, sometime probably in the first six to 12 months.
- 25:37Of, uh, TunerLog going public.
- 25:39Paid premium version will have five, six, maybe even seven additional features.
- 25:46There will be, uh, additional, um, communication.
- 25:49There will be some other VIN data history reports that are discounted.
- 25:55There will be some collaboration functions.
- 25:58There's really neat stuff.
- 26:00Again, you know, we, we have had an all star team from day one and a lot of what's
- 26:05been developed and doesn't exist anywhere.
- 26:08So it's, it's exciting.
- 26:10It's, it's going to be a lot of fun to see the reaction as people start to use
- 26:14it and really, really move it forward.
- 26:16And I guess that's one, one other thought that I would like to
- 26:19add just, you know, in general.
- 26:22Is that what we're doing with tuner log is building something
- 26:25for the people that we are right?
- 26:28We're enthusiasts So we're going to start by catering to and delivering
- 26:34the product to the enthusiast market Which is one of the reasons why we're
- 26:37announcing it here first with you guys, you know, it will grow and expand
- 26:42Obviously, it works for everything.
- 26:44It's it's relevant to many different markets, different vehicles,
- 26:48different segments all over the globe.
- 26:50But the point is, we want to bring this forward in a very transparent
- 26:54way, and we want to be very honest about what the program is.
- 26:58And the program will get better with feedback, and it will get better with
- 27:02people who genuinely appreciate what it provides, using it for free, and helping
- 27:10us build it into what ultimately will be, it's already the only program of
- 27:14its kind, but will be the best possible version of this program type that it is.
- 27:19So, so that's one thing we want to make very clear from the beginning, we want
- 27:23people to use it, give us feedback.
- 27:25We will.
- 27:26Continue to work on and develop the program to be the best it can possibly be.
- 27:31And obviously we'll be evolving forever.
- 27:33It will be years and years, but we are going to roll out the prelaunch
- 27:38beta version with some very specific partners, you know, and users
- 27:42that can give us good feedback.
- 27:43And, and as we open it up, we'll continue to ask for feedback.
- 27:47We want it to be something people can take ownership of, be a part
- 27:51of, you know, not many of us got to give input to, to Facebook, right?
- 27:56Or eBay or Amazon.
- 27:58This is something that could be absolutely as big as any of those
- 28:01entities globally in the end.
- 28:03And we want people to take ownership of it.
- 28:07We want them to help us to develop it to be the best it can be.
- 28:12If you read between the lines, you shore up the age old discussion about a car is
- 28:17worth more in pieces than it is whole.
- 28:20And that's exceptionally true when you talk about a race car.
- 28:23And so I wonder how tuner log is going to benefit the motor sports community.
- 28:28Because now I have this Rosetta stone of information telling me all about the
- 28:34history of this car, much like the SCCA log books and everything you talked about.
- 28:38But now I start.
- 28:40putting two and two together, right?
- 28:42Well, this car has a hundred and fifty thousand track miles, which is
- 28:46like a million in dog years, and you got some Penske shocks on there, so
- 28:50that means that they're blown out.
- 28:51You can't ask me for a top dollar for that type of thing, right?
- 28:54So I start making these mental correlations.
- 28:57So I get the benefit and I know this is a little bit of objection handling,
- 29:01but I'm trying to think ahead of what maybe some of our listeners might
- 29:04be thinking as they're hearing this.
- 29:05So how does one now have this conversation as a buyer or a seller when you're
- 29:13armed with all this extra data?
- 29:15That's actually a great point, and maybe not the best view into human nature,
- 29:22you know, that you could take, because I'll be honest with you, and your
- 29:26points are 100 percent valid, you know, we've gone out to some focus groups and
- 29:31gotten feedback, of course, you know, in all different stages of this, there
- 29:35have been questions like, okay, well, what if someone fakes the receipts?
- 29:39Right.
- 29:40What if I tell you, you know, I have a Peliquin differential and I show
- 29:44you a receipt, but that receipts from my other car and it goes the same way
- 29:48with, uh, with track cars in general.
- 29:50Right.
- 29:51So the paid premium version will have the ability to upload video.
- 29:55Which the standard free version doesn't, right?
- 29:58Well, you know, what's more fun than uploading and sharing videos of your
- 30:02in car shots, you know, at the track?
- 30:05Well, maybe the buyer of your car doesn't want to see you spinning off the track
- 30:09and, uh, ripping the bumper off, right?
- 30:11So, you know, you go to sell the car and you start deleting videos.
- 30:16Hey, that's human nature.
- 30:17I mean, there's no way that the transparency in the program
- 30:22can be 100 percent verified or justified for that matter.
- 30:28So you always have to understand that you have to do your due diligence.
- 30:32You have to understand that maybe, like in the example you gave, Maybe showing
- 30:38a receipt that those Penske shocks were installed six years ago, you know, is not
- 30:43going to give you a lot of confidence that you should pay extra money for the Penske
- 30:47shocks, you know, because you're looking at four or 500 each to rebuild them.
- 30:51So let me put it this way.
- 30:53If I were to offer you my car and I were to put your email address in, which
- 30:59I could do today for you and send you my entire logbook on one of my cars.
- 31:04How much extra benefit or confidence would you have in purchasing it?
- 31:09If I decided to be fully transparent with you, right?
- 31:13So we're not creating.
- 31:16The idea of being transparent or to be honest, we're not creating the
- 31:20idea of keeping records on cars and sharing them with potential buyers.
- 31:24What we're doing is we're repackaging it into a 21st century platform that
- 31:30allows you to easily Keep the records, you know, secure the records for the
- 31:35future, transfer the records, and then add to the records and continue to build
- 31:40the lineage or the history of the car.
- 31:42So we can't fix human nature.
- 31:45All we can do is say that additional transparency will continue to separate.
- 31:52The good guys from the bad guys, so to speak, and we're very positive on that.
- 31:56We think that that's a very, very good thing.
- 31:58Do you think it would make sense then to aid the seller in adding a
- 32:05capability as maybe a value estimator?
- 32:08Where it could factor in depreciation, maybe some other
- 32:11things to say, what is my car worth?
- 32:13Because I think a lot of people have a hard time coming up with a number,
- 32:16but there's also a factor here to your point about the six year old Penske
- 32:20shock, or the Bilstein, or the Eibachs, or whatever you have laying around.
- 32:24You know, when you bought those six years ago, They were 1100 bucks today.
- 32:28I can get it for 400 because somebody's trying to clearance them out of
- 32:31their out of their shop brand new.
- 32:33So is there a mechanism or will be there a mechanism on the road map
- 32:37that would allow a seller to more accurately say, you know, this is what
- 32:41I've got and this is what it's worth.
- 32:43So they're not Chopping off their nose despite their face, but
- 32:46everybody's kind of getting a good deal at the end of the day.
- 32:49Yeah, so you just hit on about four primary functions of tuner log all at
- 32:54one time, which is pretty impressive.
- 32:55So one of the things that Tuner log will do in some ways is kind
- 33:02of reset some evaluation, right?
- 33:04To say that your car has a certain suspension or a certain set of
- 33:09camshafts or a certain differential or whatever, you assume that adds value.
- 33:14If you don't have the documentation, it adds absolutely nothing.
- 33:17The red R32, phenomenal car with all these aftermarket modifications, over 30,
- 33:23000 in modifications done to that car.
- 33:25Let's say that I do give you a receipt that shows camshafts.
- 33:30There should be a shop that if I care to move forward with inspecting or
- 33:36confirming modifications that have been done to the car, we've already started
- 33:41to construct the foundation for what will be called a tuner log certified shop.
- 33:47So we will vet shops and not so different away as Angie's
- 33:52list or even AAA on some level.
- 33:54But we will have the ability to point you in a direction where you can go to
- 34:01maybe spend a little bit of money to verify that the receipts are legitimate
- 34:05and that could potentially retain the value that you may or may not lose
- 34:10from how long they've been in there.
- 34:12Are they in there or not?
- 34:13You know, is it real?
- 34:14Is it not?
- 34:15But then, on the other hand, There's the aspect of, okay, well, maybe
- 34:20I'm going to buy this car and maybe the shocks are six years old.
- 34:24So I know that before I go out on the track, I really want to replace those.
- 34:27What do I do with it?
- 34:28So now we've kind of negotiated the price.
- 34:31The transparency has given me additional confidence.
- 34:34I really liked the car.
- 34:36I'm going to go in and actually open my wishlist in my logbook.
- 34:41And I will be able to identify products that I may want to purchase for the car.
- 34:46And I'm curious about what they'll cost, things like that.
- 34:49Part of the TunerLog backend will be the ability to connect with vendors who
- 34:56have products you're interested in to actually look for the best deals possible
- 35:01on the parts that you want to replace.
- 35:04So we really have gone through from one end to the other of the
- 35:09experience, whether it comes to history or or, you know, purchasing
- 35:14or then purchasing and modifying.
- 35:17There are aspects built into the program from day one that accommodate that,
- 35:21I guess, just to just to flip back on the value, though, I'll give you
- 35:25a little example of one of the things we're working on behind the scenes.
- 35:28So built into the program, even in the free version.
- 35:32is what we call a VIN ID.
- 35:34So we're partnered with a company called VIN Audit.
- 35:36VIN Audit has the most accurate VIN data history in the USA and Canada based on
- 35:43government records and insurance records.
- 35:46But the one thing VIN data does not have is self reporting or
- 35:51service reporting, such as a CARFAX.
- 35:54So Any of us who buy and sell a lot of cars know that the Carfax
- 35:59service history is always spotty.
- 36:02You might see service here, service there, a six year gap of nothing, and then all
- 36:07of a sudden it went in for an oil change.
- 36:09It's very difficult.
- 36:10Let's go back to the idea of integration.
- 36:13Self reporting.
- 36:14Using this program and filling out that data, Will actually supplement
- 36:19what's lacking in a lot of the vehicle history reports today.
- 36:24So it's a different world when it comes to evaluating vehicles, you know, yes.
- 36:29Maybe there's more transparency.
- 36:31Yes.
- 36:31Maybe it, it plays into the value a little bit, either positive or
- 36:35negative, but the fact is we're already working with the very.
- 36:39Relevant, very well established partners to supplement what they have with what
- 36:44we have, and you're going to be able to pull out vehicle history reports along
- 36:49with the tuner log log book, which will really help you make a very good decision
- 36:55on what you're willing to pay for the car.
- 36:57Our assumption is that it's going to drastically improve the value for people
- 37:02who have the very desirable cars with very, very good records, and then it
- 37:08may pull some values down to people who are transparent about less than
- 37:12great, you know, service and support.
- 37:14The bottom line is there's a user based point system where you actually earn
- 37:20badges, which will get you discounts with key vendors for using the app.
- 37:25The more frequent that you use the app, the more records you upload to
- 37:28the app, you'll earn more points and more, you know, favorable discounts
- 37:32and coupons for key vendors.
- 37:34So we're encouraging the use of the app, which is going to
- 37:37encourage the record keeping, which is going to actually kind of.
- 37:42Reset the ability to create that value properly.
- 37:45What you're saying is actually really good because I think in the motorsports
- 37:49community, one of the things that people often struggle with, and we talk about
- 37:52a lot on this show is the concept of track insurance and track insurance
- 37:56is becoming more and more prevalent at every event that goes by every year
- 38:00since track insurance has become a thing.
- 38:02Thanks to locked in and some of the other groups that are out there, I see
- 38:05the value in a tool like tuner log.
- 38:07When I set up my declared value policy.
- 38:10I can have proof to say, this is what my race car is worth.
- 38:13This is what my high performance street car, my track car, my track
- 38:16rat is worth in parts in totality.
- 38:20And when you take that to somebody like locked in and say, I need to
- 38:23declare value policy for 50 grand for a mark one rabbit, and they
- 38:26look at you sideways, you have the.
- 38:28Papers in hand to say, yes, it's worth 50 grand.
- 38:31That's how much I have sunk into it.
- 38:33So something to consider their listeners as, as we're talking more about this,
- 38:36but I want to kind of get into a little bit more tougher conversation on behalf
- 38:40of a lot of our listeners that are probably thinking this now, you know,
- 38:43how does something like tuner log.
- 38:46affect a newer vehicle?
- 38:48We're talking about warranties and dealing with OEs and even the insurance companies.
- 38:53It's a very highly sensitive and very touchy topic.
- 38:56So let's start off with that.
- 38:57How does tuner log play into that whole equation in terms
- 39:01of accessibility of the data?
- 39:03You know, when I need to go in for service or do a recall or something like that.
- 39:07Great point.
- 39:07Again, I'm going to kind of reference the human nature thing, right?
- 39:11So we're going to control what we can control.
- 39:14And one of the things we're going to have to ask for up front is trust.
- 39:19This mechanism that collects and stores data obviously would be very attractive
- 39:24to insurance companies, to OEMs that want to monitor warranties, modifications.
- 39:30We have to protect that.
- 39:32And that's a commitment that we're making very, very boldly from the beginning.
- 39:36So we've actually had quite a few conversations about this
- 39:39in the development stage.
- 39:41So we will not sell information or share information externally to anyone.
- 39:47Obviously, there's a large investment made to create this program.
- 39:50We're going out on the street next week for our first round of funding.
- 39:55There's going to be a lot of money spent to launch the company, to
- 39:58grow the program, to develop it.
- 40:00There has to be a monetizing function.
- 40:02So, the monetizing function that we focused on is to work, again, to
- 40:10reflect that enthusiast, grassroots based desire to make this valuable.
- 40:16So, we can use the data that's inside of the application to benefit
- 40:24the user and related vendors or relevant vendors to that user
- 40:30without actually sharing the data.
- 40:33We don't have to share your personal contact information.
- 40:36We don't have to share any information about your vehicle.
- 40:39So let's say you buy a new C8 Corvette.
- 40:42So if Borla, I'm sure they do already, has a, you know, a new exhaust system
- 40:46for a C8 Corvette, we can actually partner with Borla, which I'm sure
- 40:51we will at some point here soon, to be an integrated vendor partner.
- 40:55So we can actually push Borla's announcement or special tuner log
- 41:00program purchase offer for C8 Corvette exhaust systems to C8 Corvette owners.
- 41:07Because we have the ability to pull up the contact information
- 41:11and push a notification to the app based on the VIN number that
- 41:14tells us you own a C8 Corvette.
- 41:17But guess what?
- 41:17If you don't own a C8 Corvette, you're not going to get any junk
- 41:21mail or spam about exhaust systems from Borla for C8 Corvettes.
- 41:26We also, in that way, can basically use the data that's in
- 41:31the program in a positive way.
- 41:33There's no downside to that.
- 41:34If you own a C8 Corvette, you probably do want to know what's
- 41:37available for the C8 Corvette, right?
- 41:39That's very important to us that none of our plan or strategy for monetizing
- 41:44this program has anything to do with externally sharing, selling,
- 41:49or divulging anyone's information, either personally or on their vehicle.
- 41:53We just don't have to do it.
- 41:55We've looked at the financial models.
- 41:57We've looked at the growth and scale models.
- 41:59We've gone all the way out to five years plus.
- 42:02There is absolutely no need for us to share any data
- 42:05externally so we can control it.
- 42:08We can keep it internal.
- 42:10No offense to Hagerty and all the other people that were already working with.
- 42:13But we've You know, we don't have to give any of the data on modifications or any,
- 42:17any, you know, personal information on the ownership experience to those companies.
- 42:22Yes, we will work with insurance companies.
- 42:24We'll work with auction companies, but it's, it's going to be in more
- 42:28of a generalized marketing way.
- 42:30It's not going to be related to divulging any information on the
- 42:33ownership experience of the vehicle.
- 42:35And that's very important to us.
- 42:37So that leads into, I guess, a transfer of ownership questions.
- 42:42So I sell a car to you and now I transfer my tuner log to Ed.
- 42:48Ed's got my info, right?
- 42:51So you go, Hey, why did you install this cam?
- 42:53I'm getting calls in the middle of the night.
- 42:54Car runs like crap.
- 42:56You know, it's always been the five minute, five mile
- 42:58warranty with any used car.
- 42:59So how does this play into that whole equation?
- 43:02There's a couple of things.
- 43:03One is that the receipt drop integration will not include personal data.
- 43:07It won't include the last four digits of your credit card or any of those things
- 43:11developing the receipt drop integration, which will actually be in a later release.
- 43:17It's not going to be in the first release of the program.
- 43:19It's going to be very simple.
- 43:20And again, we want.
- 43:21People to take ownership.
- 43:22We want the enthusiast market to actually help us, you know,
- 43:26kind of fine tune this program.
- 43:29So a few things will, will come a little bit later, but, you know, receipt drop
- 43:32integration is going to be formatted purposely to protect personal information.
- 43:37There's not going to be addresses or phone numbers or anything.
- 43:41And what we will tell people in our tutorial, when you sign up for the program
- 43:45is that, you know, if you're taking a picture or screenshotting, You know,
- 43:50which is what I do with my log books.
- 43:52I'll take a screenshot of the receipt.
- 43:55I simply crop it, you know, any of the phones, whether it be iOS or
- 43:59Android will allow you to screenshot and then immediately go to edit.
- 44:03You just take down the whole top section.
- 44:06All your personal information is gone at that point.
- 44:08So now let's, let's answer your question directly.
- 44:11Okay.
- 44:12So, so I sell you my car or vice versa.
- 44:14What I do is I actually share it based on your email.
- 44:18Your email is actually your login for tuner log anyway.
- 44:21Yeah.
- 44:22I hate to go down this path, but if someone was really bugging
- 44:24you about something, you could always block their email.
- 44:27I mean, you know, it's not that hard to do in today's world with the basic
- 44:30email providers that we all use.
- 44:33But the thing is, there's not a, an exchange of phone numbers, addresses.
- 44:37You can still keep it very clean.
- 44:39Good.
- 44:39Now to go a step further, we are already working on a program for a marketplace
- 44:46for exchanging vehicle ownership.
- 44:48In other words, selling vehicles that does have some very progressive, very
- 44:52cool features, such as something that we see in the marine industry, which is
- 44:58like a broker purchase kind of thing.
- 45:00You know, we already do that.
- 45:01And I bought my 997 GT3 through a Florida performance cars.
- 45:05Jeff down there is phenomenal guy.
- 45:07I also bought our, our red.
- 45:09900 horsepower 996 twin turbo from them.
- 45:12The 997 GT3 came from the original owner and it wasn't even
- 45:16really a consignment type thing.
- 45:17It was a brokered type deal.
- 45:20So I've had no contact with the original owner, but I've received
- 45:22all of the receipts and all the documentation, the original window
- 45:26sticker, the manuals, everything.
- 45:28So we can create a situation where people can have that anonymity, but
- 45:32let's also look at how transactions are made these days anyway,
- 45:36which is completely hands off.
- 45:38We're dealing with a global pandemic right now.
- 45:40TunerLog actually, by its nature and by bringing the experience of
- 45:46owning, recording and transferring a vehicle to the 21st century actually
- 45:50addresses some of the problems we're dealing with right now.
- 45:53We don't want to have a lot of personal contacts, you know, you
- 45:56know, a lot of dealers now, all dealers probably at this point.
- 46:00Are doing what they call sight unseen and appraisals.
- 46:03So they'll appraise your car based on the car facts report and a couple pictures and
- 46:08things like that But the bottom line is we take, you know sight unseen appraisals
- 46:12to a whole new level and i've talked to some very good friends of mine who run
- 46:16dealerships, uh, vw and volvo and You know, they've said that what this will
- 46:21provide to us is the ability to truly do a sight unseen appraisal Which has
- 46:26not really existed to this point We can look at our All the records, you know,
- 46:31even, uh, let's say VW, for instance, what they told me is even the VW dealers,
- 46:36you know, don't all have the same service records only if it's warranty.
- 46:40So if it's basic service and you have all your oil changes done at one dealer
- 46:43and you go to another dealer, they can't necessarily pull up all of your records.
- 46:48So this platform actually allows you to truly provide a full set of
- 46:52records on the vehicle that allows you to do very intelligent transactions
- 46:58without actually having to be there in person and handle the car or
- 47:02the paperwork, you know, firsthand.
- 47:04Two use cases here.
- 47:05The first one being what if This is my new DRM, my digital records
- 47:09management system of choice.
- 47:11And I am not too keen on paper anymore.
- 47:14So what you told me in this description is I can take a picture of that receipt, crop
- 47:19it, you know, put it in there, et cetera.
- 47:21However, I can't take a cropped receipt.
- 47:24back to the store and say, Hey, I bought this and it's busted and I need it to be
- 47:28replaced without all the corresponding information that goes along with that.
- 47:33So how does that work?
- 47:35Right.
- 47:35So now we're back to the beauty of the receipt drop integration.
- 47:39If you notice anywhere you go now, e commerce is a little bit different, but
- 47:43anywhere you go retail, let's say you're going into Napa, O'Reilly's, AutoZone,
- 47:49Advanced Auto Parts, they basically take your phone number and your email
- 47:53address and you've got a loyalty program.
- 47:55You're always signed up for a loyalty program.
- 47:57Doesn't matter if you go to the grocery store, the auto parts store, whatever.
- 48:00So receipt drop integration will also be tied in with your loyalty program.
- 48:06So just having the record to reference the product, the purchase date, things like
- 48:12that, will allow them to then turn over to the loyalty program to actually pull
- 48:17up the detailed backend of the receipt.
- 48:21So if you think of it that way, we're actually not even going as deep as the
- 48:25loyalty program where you bought the, you know, you buy your wiper blades.
- 48:30They know more about you and they're actually holding more information
- 48:33on you than we are because we're not holding your credit card number.
- 48:36So I returned some bulbs for our caddy project.
- 48:40It's our little rabbit truck that we're building.
- 48:42I did some aftermarket taillight and had to, as usual, search out the bulbs
- 48:47and they're never what they should be.
- 48:49So I took the bulbs back to return them to Advanced Auto Parts yesterday
- 48:53and they didn't need anything.
- 48:55They punched in my phone number.
- 48:56They had the credit card that I used.
- 48:58They put it right back on the card.
- 49:00I didn't have to even pull my wallet out.
- 49:03That's way scarier than tuner log, you know?
- 49:05So, so we're going to leave those people alone with that information.
- 49:10What we're going to do is be able to extract and trigger enough
- 49:14of the information to keep the record and transfer the record.
- 49:18Let's face it.
- 49:19You know, if I buy a car from you and there's something as a three year warranty
- 49:22and you give me the receipt, first of all.
- 49:25You're probably not going to give me your receipt with your, uh, you know,
- 49:28last four, your sound decks and your phone number and your email and your
- 49:32home address and all that stuff anyway.
- 49:33But most purchases are only guaranteed to the original buyer anyway.
- 49:38So, you know, the, the, the relevance of what's on the receipt, the record
- 49:43of the product that was purchased for.
- 49:46The next owner's information is actually way more watered down than it would be
- 49:52if we actually needed to go back and get warranty or something like that.
- 49:55We're again, we're not replacing everything that you normally experience.
- 50:00We're really just repackaging it.
- 50:02So we're still not going to replace the data systems that retailers already use.
- 50:07Yeah.
- 50:08And what you describe is often the case.
- 50:10If you've ever bought a Kony or Bilstein shock, you must be the original owner with
- 50:14original receipt to get anything done.
- 50:16If I transferred it to, you know, to you, then your SOL, you got to buy new parts.
- 50:21So, you know, I would like to see some of that change in the future, but that's
- 50:25not the point of this conversation.
- 50:26But my second use case though, still with my, you know, devilish cyber hat
- 50:30on here is what if I'm sitting around going, remember that car I sold to Ed.
- 50:35I still got the VIN number laying around here.
- 50:38Can I go into tuner log and go look that up and figure out where the car is gone
- 50:42or where it's ended up now, or maybe it's, you know, in California all of
- 50:45a sudden, or it ended up in Manitoba.
- 50:47I don't know.
- 50:47Is there a way for me to figure that out?
- 50:49Yeah.
- 50:50So what's interesting is the short answer is no, because we're very,
- 50:54very keen again, you know, being.
- 50:57User based and building this program based on what we want as
- 51:01enthusiasts and as hardcore vehicle owners and enjoyers of these cars.
- 51:08We don't want that.
- 51:09I mean, I, you know, a great story, our rally golf, you know, the rally golf
- 51:12I built when I was still part owner of NGP that we built it with VW Vortex.
- 51:18It was everywhere.
- 51:19I lost track of that car for 13 years.
- 51:21I just found it with some help of a friend, you know, Nate Brown.
- 51:24A lot of people know, you know, is, uh, at NGP Quite a while.
- 51:28He's now working for the FCP or a race team.
- 51:31Yeah, he actually helped me find the car, figured out who had it and got
- 51:35me connected to buy the car, right?
- 51:37What we envision is much like Zillow or almost a combination of
- 51:43Zillow and LinkedIn, the ability to.
- 51:46Let the owner choose whether he wants the car to be found or whether
- 51:51he wants the car to be bought.
- 51:53So you could have the ability and some later versions may actually be
- 51:57a little bit more towards the premium offering where you can actually turn
- 52:01the car on so that people can search it by VIN number, and there's a couple
- 52:06reasons for that that may be beneficial.
- 52:09One is that, you know, let's say I have the rally golf or I have, you know,
- 52:13some, some rare car mark four R 32, you know, for instance, but which I may
- 52:18or may not be in the market for again.
- 52:20So if I want to know if there's any mark four R 30 twos within 250 miles of me
- 52:26that may be for sale, it would be nice to have the ability for an owner of that
- 52:30car to be able to, to just click a box.
- 52:33That says, you know, make me sell is the Zillow term.
- 52:36Obviously we're not going to steal that from them, but you know, make
- 52:39me an offer or whatever it is.
- 52:41And I would be able as a, let's say maybe a premium user to go out
- 52:45and search for specific cars, which are going to be referenced by VIN
- 52:48number that identifies the car.
- 52:50But it's always going to be with the owner's approval.
- 52:53They're going to have to be able to turn that on before they can be seen or found.
- 52:57And then it will have to be for specific reasons, right?
- 53:00Because they may want to sell it.
- 53:02Let's say it's a rare car, and they want to find other owners of similar rare cars,
- 53:07you know, like 997 GT3, you know, there's not many of those cars around, 997.
- 53:111 specifically, so if, uh, if I want to know if anyone else in Jacksonville has
- 53:17that car, it would be kind of cool to be able to click that off, but then again,
- 53:22We're also going to have integrated groups, like say, uh, you know, PCA.
- 53:27So if I'm a Porsche club member, you know, we could all always have
- 53:31a separate section where you could communicate with other club members of
- 53:35major, you know, significant OEM level type clubs, which would be fantastic.
- 53:40So, uh, there's quite a few things we're working on.
- 53:43Like I said, there's a lot of things in the works for some future
- 53:46features that will be rolled out.
- 53:48But the important thing is we're not exposing anyone.
- 53:51We're not selling or sharing anyone's data externally.
- 53:55We want this to be a safe, secure place where you can
- 53:59come, enjoy the benefits of it.
- 54:01The value is always going to be tremendous for the input.
- 54:04Obviously, entry point at free is, is hard to beat.
- 54:08Spend a few minutes every week or two with it, or whenever you have
- 54:11any kind of event with your vehicle, and you're going to see the benefits.
- 54:14But on the other hand, you're not going to be exposed to
- 54:17anything you're not interested in.
- 54:19And, and what you just highlighted there is.
- 54:21kind of a legacy concept being reborn, which is the idea of a registry, right?
- 54:25And so I happen to be part of the 914 registry as a 914 owner.
- 54:29And there are sites out there that probably a lot of newer motor sports
- 54:33enthusiasts don't know that they exist.
- 54:34You know, there's a Shelby Cobra registry and there's a, you
- 54:37know, Sunbeam Tiger registry.
- 54:39I mean, all, a lot of those old vintage cars, there's a lot of that out there.
- 54:42And we, you know, we're friends with the folks In the classic car club of America
- 54:46and the Packard club and stuff like that.
- 54:48And they have those types of lists where they're trying
- 54:50to keep track of famous cars.
- 54:52Like, Oh, that was the Packard that Clark Gable owned.
- 54:54Right.
- 54:54And so they have a whole history on that kind of thing.
- 54:56It's a different sort of record keeping that we're talking about here, but
- 55:00I could see that appeal in a more modern way with what you described.
- 55:05Now, I want to close out the cyber discussion here, and I
- 55:08know we didn't go too deep.
- 55:09But there is one thing that, you know, the Uber nerds are probably thinking
- 55:13about, and I'm going to throw out some acronyms here that people may or may
- 55:16not be familiar with, but it really gets down to the base concept of storage
- 55:21concerns, data at rest, things like that.
- 55:23Just.
- 55:24Touch briefly on tuner logs, compliance with regulatory
- 55:29compliances, like GDPR, the global data protection regulation, PII storage.
- 55:34You know, this is an ERM or DRM electronic records management
- 55:37or digital records management platform as, as we've discussed.
- 55:40So there's a lot of other things that you guys had to take into
- 55:42account from an it perspective.
- 55:44So just to put some of our listeners at ease, let's elaborate on that just
- 55:48a little bit so that they understand that, you know, this is, It's truly
- 55:51legit and all the painstaking process that you've had to go through.
- 55:55Yeah.
- 55:55So a couple of things on that topic.
- 55:58I mean, right now we have a, our basic security level is the same as
- 56:03using a mobile banking app, right?
- 56:05I mean, we literally have the same amount of security on
- 56:09transfer security on storage.
- 56:12We take very seriously.
- 56:13We're actually working on a data security mission statement, kind of
- 56:18an operating outline that we will share publicly that will actually
- 56:23describe how we're going to hold data.
- 56:26You know where it's placed.
- 56:28There is a cloud storage built into the app again in the basic free
- 56:32version that you actually hold.
- 56:35All of your records.
- 56:36And even after you transfer a logbook, you can still hold all the
- 56:40previous records in your cloud in case you buy that same car again.
- 56:44And you want to reference something.
- 56:46It's fantastic the way it was built out again.
- 56:49You know, there'll be a lot more details posted up and
- 56:52actually explained a little bit.
- 56:54We've looked at blockchain integration for security.
- 56:57There's some things that some of the larger investors actually are keyed
- 57:01in on and focused on when it comes to this type of program and data storage.
- 57:06We're looking at obviously, uh, as it scales and grows, moving into like an
- 57:11AWS platform, you know, for moving the data around and hosting the program.
- 57:16So, you know, there's lots of things to be decided before the program goes
- 57:21live, but most of the architecture.
- 57:23Is built.
- 57:24It's very secure again from day one.
- 57:28The free service.
- 57:29If you use a mobile banking app on your phone, you've got
- 57:32the same level of security for transferring your data as that.
- 57:37So that should give some people some peace of mind.
- 57:39But we take it very seriously, and it is something that we will
- 57:43continue to make a big investment on.
- 57:45Right.
- 57:45And the biggest thing about GDPR, there's really two pieces.
- 57:48One is not as important, but it pertains to this conversation, which is the
- 57:52ability to opt out of something, right?
- 57:54And that's been widely known in a lot of things.
- 57:57You need to be able to unsubscribe from emails and spam, all that kind of stuff.
- 58:00But the bigger part of GDPR is when I say, as the consumer, the customer, I want out.
- 58:07And I want my records and I need them expunged from the system.
- 58:11Part of that regulatory compliance is that it providers and service providers,
- 58:14application providers must comply to that.
- 58:17So I just want to make sure that, you know, if I decide tomorrow, Hey, we're
- 58:20all LGTM signing up for tuner log.
- 58:23And people want to pull out and, you know, they've uploaded, you know, what
- 58:27they identify as PII that they know for a fact that when they hit that
- 58:32delete button or I want out that it's, it's going to be completely expunged.
- 58:36So, yeah, so, so that will be part of the security, uh, commitment and agreement.
- 58:42It's important that people understand the anonymity factor to the receipts, right?
- 58:49So the thing is, when you're.
- 58:52Exchanging information, trading receipts.
- 58:56If I buy your car and you share with me your log book, which has copies
- 59:00of your, you know, like, let's say, you know, watered down copies of the
- 59:04receipts that just references the parts, maybe when they were purchased
- 59:07or they were purchased from, which is really all I have the business knowing.
- 59:11You are still retaining those copies, so I have to be okay with the fact
- 59:15that you still also have copies, right?
- 59:17So we have to I guess this is really kind of a I'm moving to a generalized type of
- 59:22statement, but we have to be conscious of the Movement of that information.
- 59:28If you say you want that information to be off of tuner log, that's fine.
- 59:33And you own that information, but you may be referencing information that two other
- 59:37people already own because they've already owned it and transferred it, right?
- 59:41So who actually owns those receipts that you've been given
- 59:45during the transfer of the vehicle two or three times or 10 times?
- 59:49You know, I'm not going to lie.
- 59:50We're working with some interesting dynamics when it comes to transferring
- 59:54data that really doesn't exist.
- 59:56But the thing is, you have to be confident that when you do something
- 59:59that's never been done before, that you'll make the right decisions for
- 1:00:03everyone that's involved long term.
- 1:00:05And that's actually something we embrace.
- 1:00:07We're very excited to almost recreate or reaffirm the confidence people can
- 1:00:14have in using modern platforms where, you know, you're uploading data.
- 1:00:21And it's up there and, you know, it's still your data, but it's, it's
- 1:00:25somewhere else and someone's keeping it and someone else is transferring
- 1:00:29it or holding it on your behalf.
- 1:00:31We take that very seriously and some of that will be further developed as
- 1:00:35we also reach out to the global market.
- 1:00:38Because there are some considerations to be made when it comes to data holding
- 1:00:43and transfer as it pertains to other countries and other regions in the world.
- 1:00:47So we will have one complete department inside of TunerLog that's just going
- 1:00:53to be data compliance and security.
- 1:00:56It's actually going to be a very important function.
- 1:00:58So let's, let's take it to a little lighter conversation, you
- 1:01:02know, our favorite conversation, which is motorsports.
- 1:01:04I want to take it back a minute.
- 1:01:06And.
- 1:01:07I don't want to divulge any secrets.
- 1:01:09So I'm going to play King for a day.
- 1:01:10So since you talked about making this, you know, amenable to the, to
- 1:01:14the motorsport community, some of the things I'd like to see in tuner
- 1:01:17log, I'm going to put it that way.
- 1:01:18It'd be really cool.
- 1:01:19If, as I have my race car in tuner log that I could keep a log of tire
- 1:01:25pressures and set up and certain tracks and things like that, I think
- 1:01:30I'd want to take that a step further.
- 1:01:32Because a lot of times you tell people, you know, I turned to 135 at Rowan Atlanta
- 1:01:37and they go, yeah, you're full of it.
- 1:01:39Well, you know what if I could upload my aim data and prove it and say here
- 1:01:43it is Here's the lap data from that car from the telemetry with this particular
- 1:01:47setup There's no doubt just like those receipts that those parts and
- 1:01:51that setup works in addition to that.
- 1:01:53I think the transfer Of a race car from one person to another.
- 1:01:57Oftentimes there's some tribal knowledge that is lost, right?
- 1:02:01That it's, it's just lost from one owner to the other.
- 1:02:04And you scratch your head and you look at it and go, why the heck did
- 1:02:07this guy set this car up this way?
- 1:02:08I just don't understand.
- 1:02:10So if there was more in depth logging than just, Oh, well, it's got a strip
- 1:02:14cam in it, and it's got, you know, iBox and, and, and ground controls,
- 1:02:18it answers the question, why?
- 1:02:20Then that means something much more to the motorsport community, uh, in the long run.
- 1:02:26Yeah, the, the, the motorsport segment is, is just phenomenally exciting.
- 1:02:31We actually had a, uh, a bit of a consultation type development meeting
- 1:02:35last week with our good friend, Nate Brown works with FCPR now on the race team.
- 1:02:40And, and he gave us some great input last week, you know, just in
- 1:02:43general of some of his observations and his experiences, but yeah.
- 1:02:47That's one of the things that we discussed in that meeting was sanctioned
- 1:02:51racing, you know, let's say club racing, amateur racing, you know, specifically,
- 1:02:56we don't just want to which we do already have in the basic format.
- 1:03:00We have a track log.
- 1:03:00One of the logbook segments inside of the logbook you create for your
- 1:03:04unique vehicle is a track log.
- 1:03:07Where you can keep tire pressures and you can keep, you know, break pads and
- 1:03:10you can make comments on how the pads worked or what you liked or didn't liked
- 1:03:14about these tires and what size you use, what wheel you used, what offset.
- 1:03:19That's the whole point of the program, right?
- 1:03:21It would be one thing to just say, okay, we created a structure, a platform
- 1:03:26that you can keep this information and it's and it's easily accessible.
- 1:03:30You can grab your phone and you can Hit one button and pull up the app and
- 1:03:33oh, that's the tire pressure I use.
- 1:03:35So that's one thing, and that's really beneficial, but that's not us.
- 1:03:39You know, we're overachievers here.
- 1:03:40So what TunerLog is looking to do is actually integrate with sanctions.
- 1:03:45Let's say amateur club racing type level organizations.
- 1:03:50To where we can actually have your sanctioned logbook
- 1:03:53for your vehicle in the app.
- 1:03:56We can have documentation in the app.
- 1:03:59You can actually transfer and upload information.
- 1:04:02And I tell you, this is something you touched on a second ago
- 1:04:05that's really interesting.
- 1:04:07There are a lot of people now, of course, in the modern world that we
- 1:04:10live in, who actually are paid to dino tune cars from 2000 miles away, right?
- 1:04:17You take your car, you put it on a dino and they log in through
- 1:04:19the internet and hook in your ECU and you're, you're running the car
- 1:04:24or the dino operators running the car and they're tweaking the map.
- 1:04:28You could actually get to the point with this ability to transfer data where you
- 1:04:32could actually transfer, you know, setups.
- 1:04:35You could transfer a complete setup on a specific car to someone, you
- 1:04:39know, whether it be in a business format where you actually sell the
- 1:04:44setup, or you're just trying to hook up a friend who's on the West Coast.
- 1:04:47He's run the same car as you.
- 1:04:49We do want to work with the tracks.
- 1:04:51Again, we don't want to claim that we're reinventing the wheel.
- 1:04:53We're not.
- 1:04:54There are apps that give you track maps and they give you the ability to
- 1:04:58log certain functions or keep records.
- 1:05:00What we're saying is, do you want five apps on your phone related to the
- 1:05:05use of your car or do you want one?
- 1:05:06Right.
- 1:05:07That's the point.
- 1:05:08We want to achieve the integration.
- 1:05:10We will achieve the integration to where this works on your VW Atlas, you know,
- 1:05:17grocery getter that takes the kids to school and takes you on family vacation
- 1:05:21to keep records of maintenance and and the ownership experience on that.
- 1:05:26And you just Scroll left one one spot and you've got your mark for, you
- 1:05:31know, race car with all your detailed information and you've got, you
- 1:05:35know, track maps and you've got video uploads on the premium version that
- 1:05:39you could transfer shared social media.
- 1:05:42The whole point is integration and the ability to have it convenient.
- 1:05:47That's the whole thing.
- 1:05:48Convenient to use and convenient to access.
- 1:05:51So with those driving forces, which come from the grassroots, you know,
- 1:05:56need to have something that's useful but easy to use in a low entry
- 1:06:01point as far as cost and complexity, that's that's what we're aiming for.
- 1:06:06And that's what the bottom line will be.
- 1:06:08So a lot of the things you're you're hinting towards have
- 1:06:11already been considered.
- 1:06:12The development process obviously takes some time, but we do look at it.
- 1:06:17The enthusiast market to begin with, because we know this is beneficial
- 1:06:21to anyone who is an automotive or, or enthusiast of any type, whether it be
- 1:06:26motorcycle, you know, boat car, and then there's the ultra enthusiasts,
- 1:06:31let's say the motor sports fans and people actually use the car for what
- 1:06:34it was built for or designed for.
- 1:06:36So we want to, we want to focus down on that, but we also at the same
- 1:06:40time, we're going to be focusing out on more of a, an overall integration,
- 1:06:45but the compliment each other.
- 1:06:47They really do.
- 1:06:48And ultimately what you'll have is, is something that does everything
- 1:06:52that you need it to do with one click.
- 1:06:55Very cool.
- 1:06:55And you, you conjured up an old memory for me because I worked
- 1:06:58at electric motor for a while.
- 1:07:00And you know, one of the biggest things there was don't
- 1:07:02forget to send them a bin file.
- 1:07:04You have to have that backup file for the ECU all the time.
- 1:07:07And so I sold one car that had an electromotive on it.
- 1:07:09And it was like, I gave the guy a laptop and like all this stuff.
- 1:07:12So it's like, if you lose this, it's on you, man.
- 1:07:15But having a backup copy somewhere, you know, even if it was in the cloud, it'd
- 1:07:18be kind of cool to say, I still got that tune laying around if you need it.
- 1:07:21Or, you know, transfer it to somebody that maybe has a similar
- 1:07:23build and say, Hey, here's my tune.
- 1:07:25Almost feels like Forza in a way.
- 1:07:26Hey, let me send you my tune real quick.
- 1:07:28And you get your car set up real quick.
- 1:07:29You know, so that's kind of cool.
- 1:07:31I like that idea.
- 1:07:32So, Ed.
- 1:07:33As we wrap things up here, is there anything else you want to talk about
- 1:07:36with respect to TunerLog, uh, you know, anything we didn't mention or didn't,
- 1:07:39or you wanted to cover or tell the world about before we decide to sign off here?
- 1:07:45Well, I would say this, it's an exciting platform.
- 1:07:48It's, it's almost a little daunting.
- 1:07:50It's grown to be such a massive scope and scale over the past couple of years
- 1:07:54as we've been putting it together.
- 1:07:56No matter how big it is, or no matter how widespread it becomes,
- 1:08:01you know, as it's becomes a global.
- 1:08:03Entity and all the things that we have planned, we are going to work very hard to
- 1:08:07make sure people understand the purpose, the intent of what it was built for every
- 1:08:14aspect of what it does and how it's used as you go through using the program.
- 1:08:21It's going to reflect our intentions and our goals.
- 1:08:24So again, you know, we're, we're not going to hide from anything where, you
- 1:08:28know, there's no smoke and mirrors.
- 1:08:29It is what it is.
- 1:08:30We're being very transparent.
- 1:08:32But I think the exciting thing is, you know, take ownership of it.
- 1:08:35You know, we're, we're going to listen.
- 1:08:37We're going to have avenues for people to give feedback.
- 1:08:39We're going to really, Work hard at making it a program for the people by the people.
- 1:08:45We're giving it a great head start.
- 1:08:47We've gotten some phenomenal feedback.
- 1:08:49We've gone in and made some major tweaks in the last six months, just based on,
- 1:08:53you know, some really good feedback that we've received and some internal.
- 1:08:57Testing we've done, it's going to be a great program.
- 1:09:00We do have a couple extra things like the collaboration function.
- 1:09:04That's going to be exciting where if you're a shop, I can drop
- 1:09:08my car off to you and click one button in the logbook and it will
- 1:09:13share the entire logbook with you.
- 1:09:16Whether you're an independent person or you're on a shop account or whatever.
- 1:09:20So when you're working on the car, you can take pictures of the install of the parts.
- 1:09:24You can take pictures of the install guide, the receipts, upload those
- 1:09:29so that I can actually go into my log book and watch you work on
- 1:09:33my car, which is really exciting.
- 1:09:35When I go to pick up the car, I'm standing there, you know, paying my bill and
- 1:09:39get my receipt and I can turn it off.
- 1:09:41You no longer have access to it.
- 1:09:43So there's some really, really smart features that are going to be in the very
- 1:09:47first version that are rolling out that I think when people start to use them
- 1:09:52and understand them, they'll, they'll see what our intentions are, you know, what
- 1:09:56we're really trying to create and, uh, We're going to have influencers building
- 1:10:00crazy project cars that will be shared through tuner log, where you'll be able
- 1:10:04to, you know, I mean, how many times have you seen something like a Ken Block, for
- 1:10:07instance, you know, builds a crazy car.
- 1:10:10And, uh, I know at least for me, you know, being a technical minded guy, I'm like,
- 1:10:14gosh, you know, what rear end is he using?
- 1:10:16That's crazy.
- 1:10:17What transmission?
- 1:10:18Yeah, I've seen flipping through the gears.
- 1:10:19Okay.
- 1:10:20So, so I've got a Raptor.
- 1:10:21With a, with a three, five twin turbo V six, what transmission
- 1:10:25is behind that three, five V six.
- 1:10:27I'd love to know what he's running, you know, pushing a thousand
- 1:10:31horsepower through that truck for people who are building those
- 1:10:34big projects and influencers that are putting out the crazy stuff.
- 1:10:38We all love to watch.
- 1:10:39How great would it be to go in and go to a public section of tuner log and actually.
- 1:10:44pull down the parts list and see what they used.
- 1:10:46What spring rates are they using?
- 1:10:48You know, what compound tires are they using?
- 1:10:51What offset wheels do they have on that, that STI or, or, you
- 1:10:54know, Evo or whatever it is.
- 1:10:56So it's going to be fun.
- 1:10:58It's going to be a lot of fun.
- 1:10:59It's going to be really exciting.
- 1:11:00And I think some of the people we have involved with TunerLog as well
- 1:11:04going to be familiar to some people.
- 1:11:06It's, it's going to be fun to see the reaction.
- 1:11:09Well, like I said, I've been, I've been keeping tabs on to the log for
- 1:11:12a while because it was, it was snuck out there into the wild a while ago.
- 1:11:16So it's been good to see its progression.
- 1:11:17It's good to see that you guys are finally coming out into the light and, you know,
- 1:11:21big smiling faces saying, Hey, we're here.
- 1:11:23We're happy.
- 1:11:24Let's get this going.
- 1:11:25So why don't you tell us a little bit as we close here on how folks like.
- 1:11:29Folks here at GTM can get a hold of TunerLog or the folks that are out there
- 1:11:33listening out on the big wide internet.
- 1:11:35How do they get dialed into TunerLog and especially how do
- 1:11:38they get dialed into Bolt City?
- 1:11:40Right.

- 1:12:07you know, the Mark two, just, that's a great way to just kind of see what we do.
- 1:12:11We're again, we're very transparent.
- 1:12:13There's nothing to hide.
- 1:12:14We're just, you know, we're just having fun.
- 1:12:16So tuner log, we've, For a lot of reasons, kind of been, you know, a
- 1:12:21little protective of some of the details.
- 1:12:23You guys are getting the exclusive, which is phenomenal.
- 1:12:26Very proud, you know, to work with you guys on, on pushing this out.
- 1:12:30We do have a, a tuner log on Instagram.
- 1:12:34That would be a good place to keep an eye out.
- 1:12:37As you said, I've dropped a couple of teasers here and there, even
- 1:12:41some screenshots of the app.
- 1:12:43Maybe we'll load a couple videos, you know, of some of the
- 1:12:46app walkthrough here shortly.
- 1:12:48So, uh, keep an eye out on that.
- 1:12:49We're going to start getting a little bit more active as things get close.
- 1:12:53We are out looking for, you know, uh, a short round of funding before
- 1:12:57the launch, just to make sure that we have what we need to go out to market.
- 1:13:01So we're going to be out on the street with that starting next week.

- 1:13:24launch, which is really exciting.

- 1:13:56the day just making our lives easier.
- 1:13:58So We wish you the best of luck with tuner log and all the successes
