- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Hiya! Welcome to Seeking Authenticity.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: My name is Flint Mitchell.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I was born and raised in the Bay Area in California, where I fell in love with soccer, the Sierra Nevadas, and the ocean.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: After studying electrical engineering in college and spending several years working as a scientist in a research lab for Roche, I left and went on a near year-long hiking and surf adventure, exploring the west coast of the United States, Hawaii, and Australia.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: When COVID-19 struck, I made the unfortunate but correct call to stop my journey from going further west than Oz, come home, and reset my waypoints.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: As I look towards the future, I still see my path leading towards research.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I love building and reading and inventing.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: However, the trip allowed me to dive into another passion of mine, which is genuinely connecting with and learning from others.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Looking back, this trip gave me a perspective on how much I value making strong bonds with the people I look up to.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Especially those people who I admire and who even make me a bit nervous to talk to because of how much I respect them.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: This compelled me to think of ways I might add that value of connecting with people to my career, and just to be intentional about it.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Hence this podcast.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I've found that wherever I go, I've fallen into wonderful and profound conversations with people of all different backgrounds.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: These discussions have inspired and motivated me, helped me reflect, changed my ideas and opinions on a variety of topics, compelled me to have better conversations with my close friends, and made me grow as a person by challenging myself, thinking about if my actions actually line up with the way I want them to be.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I thought that since these conversations bring me so much joy, because I receive so much from them, and because I have them so often, that maybe recording them in a bit more of a formal format would allow me to share these results with others.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: The meaning of the title, Seeking Authenticity, is exactly what it sounds like.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: I am on a constant search for authentic people.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: I define authenticity as the alignment between your values, right, your real priorities in life, and your actions, the way you actually interact with the world.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Now, don't confuse this with agreeableness or indifference.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Being authentic is not about agreeing with or pleasing other people.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: It's about acting the way you truly believe you should act, and saying the things you really believe in.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And no, this is also not saying that anyone, especially not me, is or should be perfect.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: I make tons of mistakes and say plenty of stupid stuff.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: But my failings, well, our failings, our mistakes, our errors, our imperfections, they're a large part of what makes us human.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: To my point though, you know those people who, regardless of the circumstance, and even if they mess up every once in a while, clearly value integrity because they are actively honest, or who obviously value connecting with others because they invest their time in you and genuinely care about what you have to say.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Or take responsibility for all their actions because it's important to them to be accountable.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: That effort to act well?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: I love that shit, dog.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I feed off of it.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: It inspires me to act like the person I want to be like.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: And maybe, by listening to these conversations, you might also get inspired or motivated.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: You might also reflect, or change your opinion, or grow as a person, or ask your friends why, just a little more often.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: I think it's important to mention here that while I certainly have my beliefs and opinions, this in no way is aimed at forcing any of my or my guests' ideas onto you as a listener.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: But I know that if you truly listen to what these guests have to say and take their words into your own mind, you might find something important.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: You might realize a bit more clearly what your priorities and goals are.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Your values might become a bit more clear, and you might try to act a bit more authentically.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: And the reason I know that is because that's exactly what they do for me.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So get stoked, get excited, get psyched, get amped, feel that shit.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: This whole life thing is just too damn good to pass through without diving a little bit deeper with the people around you that you love.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Now, moving on from the purpose of this podcast to the details and my commitment to it.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: My goal with this podcast is to create and publish 50 episodes, starting in August and ending in December, where I hope to reflect and see what to do next.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: After the first two weeks, where I'll add a whole bunch of content, I'll be publishing one episode every Monday and Wednesday at 5 a.m.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Eastern Time.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: For me, having these discussions is already a success.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: I absolutely love them.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And if I'm able to become a better host, ask better questions, and reflect on the topics my guests find important, that's already more than I could ask for.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And finally, if you, the listener, enjoy these episodes and you find that they are helping you in any aspect of life, whether it's strictly for entertainment or on a deeper level, helping you reflect on what you value in life, or a combination of both, then every goal I have for this podcast will have been met.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: And if come December, people are interested in it continuing, either just like it is or pivoting in a slightly different direction, I would be incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Also, along the way, I would love it if you left me some feedback.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Whether it's a compliment or a criticism, I'd like to hear it.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: One of the best ways I grow as a person is when I hear from others, honestly, what they think I could do better.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I'll think about your feedback, and it might just make the following episodes more enjoyable for you.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Anyways, thank you to my guests, and thank you for listening.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: I genuinely hope that you can enjoy these conversations as much as I do.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Peace.
