- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Bucco Territory, presented by
- 0:13Speaker 2: the Foul Territory Network. I'm your host, Noah Jiles, and
- 0:16Speaker 2: as always, joining me on this fine program are our
- 0:19Speaker 2: two co hosts, Jay Hey aka Josh Harrison and Mark
- 0:23Speaker 2: aka Platinum Key Fellas.
- 0:25Speaker 1: How are we doing?
- 0:27Speaker 3: Doing good? Excited to be here.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Loving it almost some Thanksgiving time, So getting ready for
- 0:34Speaker 4: some turkey with the family.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I was gonna say, so Thanksgiving week coming up? What's
- 0:38Speaker 2: everyone's favorite go to dish? We'll start with you, Mark,
- 0:40Speaker 2: since you brought it up.
- 0:42Speaker 4: It's stuffing. My dad makes this phenomenal stuffing and I
- 0:46Speaker 4: eat like a whole entire plate of just that. It's
- 0:48Speaker 4: my go to. I love it.
- 0:52Speaker 5: Well. I ain't mad at that, so I get, you know,
- 0:57Speaker 5: the liberty of usually frying a turkey the past couple
- 1:00Speaker 5: of years, but not doing that this year. I've been
- 1:03Speaker 5: someone with smoking some ribs, But what I really care
- 1:07Speaker 5: for the sides. You give me some macaroni, cheese, some yams,
- 1:10Speaker 5: and some greens. That's all I care for. Like, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 5: the main course, you know, turkey, chicken, whatever, that's cool,
- 1:16Speaker 5: But you know, if I'm going back for seconds. I'm
- 1:18Speaker 5: getting some jams, some macaroni cheese, some greens.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Mark.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, like stuffing to me, Like I don't understand why
- 1:29Speaker 2: we don't eat stuffing more like we only eat it
- 1:32Speaker 2: one day a year, yeah, or like you know, like
- 1:35Speaker 2: certain restaurants will have like, oh, try our Thanksgiving special meal,
- 1:39Speaker 2: you know, like when November rolls around.
- 1:41Speaker 1: But it's like Stuffing's genuinely good.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I like it.
- 1:46Speaker 2: My favorite thing about Thanksgiving, well aside from like you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: the traditional things, is like I think it's some of
- 1:53Speaker 2: the best leftover food you can get. So many different
- 1:57Speaker 2: variations of it too, Like I think, like the hold
- 2:00Speaker 2: turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and stuffing everything.
- 2:07Speaker 5: My grandma makes this turkey hash with leftover turkey is
- 2:10Speaker 5: like potatoes carrots, makes it into like this like broth
- 2:13Speaker 5: of soup.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yes, please, how you do it? Man.
- 2:17Speaker 2: That's the other part of it that's cool too, is
- 2:19Speaker 2: like everyone's family has their own different things, you know,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and that's it's awesome to be a.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Part of all.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Right, on the note of Thanksgiving, actually, I don't even
- 2:30Speaker 2: have a smooth transition transition not connected at all to Thanksgiving. Actually,
- 2:36Speaker 2: some roster moves were made last week non tender decisions. Mark,
- 2:42Speaker 2: We're going to talk about non tender decisions all throughout
- 2:45Speaker 2: the league on this show, but before we do that,
- 2:49Speaker 2: just give us a rundown of some of the moves
- 2:50Speaker 2: the Pirates made last week.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Yeah, so the Pirates four guys that nothing really too shocking.
- 2:57Speaker 4: It was Darry Moretta, Colin Holderman, Ronnie Simon, and Alexander Canario.
- 3:03Speaker 4: So a couple of the position players that were right
- 3:06Speaker 4: on the borderline of the roster never really clicked. And
- 3:09Speaker 4: then two of the relief pitchers with Holderman and Moretta.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Holderman had a really solid twenty three back when he
- 3:17Speaker 4: was traded for Vogelbach and then just has really struggled
- 3:21Speaker 4: ever since then. But it may have just been I
- 3:24Speaker 4: don't know if the Pirates wanted to pay what he's
- 3:26Speaker 4: gonna cost, but it was probably time to move on.
- 3:29Speaker 4: And then Dari Moretta nasty slider, one of the most
- 3:34Speaker 4: unique pitches in baseball. Josh, his slider breaks arms side
- 3:38Speaker 4: and he doesn't know why, but he throws it like
- 3:41Speaker 4: a slider, calls a slider. But he had Tom John
- 3:44Speaker 4: surgery in twenty twenty four, and so ever since coming
- 3:47Speaker 4: back from that, he just hit the slider hasn't been
- 3:51Speaker 4: nearly as effectives. Yeah, and he throws it like sixty
- 3:54Speaker 4: five percent of the time, so if that isn't as effective,
- 3:58Speaker 4: he's just overall on this effect. But he is the
- 4:00Speaker 4: most electric relief pitcher. He's the guy that does.
- 4:04Speaker 1: The Yeah, exactly.
- 4:08Speaker 4: So yeah, de Naro, Dari, money, Moretta, big bank, just
- 4:13Speaker 4: unlimited aura. But yeah, it struggled a little bit this year,
- 4:16Speaker 4: so we'll see where he lands. But those are the
- 4:18Speaker 4: four people off the Pirates roster. And then they offered
- 4:22Speaker 4: Jack Zwinsky a one point five million dollar deal to
- 4:27Speaker 4: buy out before arbitration, so kind of gives the Pirates
- 4:30Speaker 4: an extra option year with him just because he's out
- 4:33Speaker 4: of options. So gives it a level where other teams
- 4:36Speaker 4: might not want to sign him if they do end
- 4:39Speaker 4: up moving him down.
- 4:40Speaker 2: So yeah, nothing really surprising there, and I didn't anticipate
- 4:46Speaker 2: anything much different. I mean, the Murray any thing, I
- 4:48Speaker 2: think was probably the most surprising of the bunch. But overall, yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 2: I'm not too shocked about that. But around baseball, there
- 4:57Speaker 2: were some shocking non tender moves and we're going to
- 5:00Speaker 2: get into those, but first, before we do, you're going
- 5:03Speaker 2: to take a quick break here from our sponsor.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Hey, for all the parents out there with teens, it's

- 6:07Speaker 2: All Right, so looking around the league fellas obviously, every
- 6:11Speaker 2: team had to get its roster in place for the
- 6:14Speaker 2: offseason ahead, and there were some notable names that were
- 6:18Speaker 2: non tendered this winter.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I feel like probably.
- 6:23Speaker 2: A better group than normal seasons as far as just
- 6:27Speaker 2: name recognition. Guys who might not have had the best
- 6:30Speaker 2: year in twenty twenty five, but aren't far from removed
- 6:34Speaker 2: from some significant seasons. And when you look at these
- 6:39Speaker 2: lists of this list of names, I see a handful
- 6:42Speaker 2: of guys who I think would be intriguing pickups for
- 6:45Speaker 2: the Pirates. Now, do I see any names that are
- 6:49Speaker 2: like true difference makers that will like get fans super excited?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Maybe probably not. But do I see names of guys
- 6:58Speaker 2: who could come in and be a tune player or
- 7:02Speaker 2: you know, the first guy off the bench utility man
- 7:05Speaker 2: type player, or maybe just someone on a rebound contract
- 7:09Speaker 2: that could potentially add depth to the active roster. Yeah,
- 7:14Speaker 2: I think there are people out there who just became
- 7:17Speaker 2: free agents because they got non tendered that could make
- 7:20Speaker 2: the Pirates a better baseball team. And would probably be
- 7:23Speaker 2: in a reasonable price range, probably be looking to sign
- 7:26Speaker 2: one of those one year, ten million or less dollar
- 7:30Speaker 2: deals that they've been so familiar with. So, guys, we
- 7:34Speaker 2: looked over the list of all of these players. I
- 7:36Speaker 2: want to go around everyone throw out one name. Will
- 7:39Speaker 2: start with you, Josh, who's a guy who got non
- 7:43Speaker 2: tendered last week that you think would make sense for
- 7:45Speaker 2: the Pirates to kick the tires on.
- 7:50Speaker 5: So looking through the list, I saw some names and
- 7:52Speaker 5: there were a few that popped out, but one, and
- 7:55Speaker 5: you're going to have to let me know based off
- 7:57Speaker 5: of you know, positioning and what's there. But the one
- 8:00Speaker 5: that stuck out to me was Jonah Hie switching and catcher.
- 8:05Speaker 5: You talk about a guy who's got a World Series,
- 8:07Speaker 5: who's dealt with, you know, multiple veteran pitchers at different
- 8:10Speaker 5: you know.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Stages of their career.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Pittsburgh could be a fresh start with you know and
- 8:14Speaker 5: already established Paul Schemes and some other you know, Mitch
- 8:18Speaker 5: Keller if he's still there, but you know the likes
- 8:21Speaker 5: of the pitching that has been a strength for the Pirates.
- 8:23Speaker 5: You know, you can bring in a veteran backstop that
- 8:26Speaker 5: can help on that defensive side, but also can provide
- 8:29Speaker 5: you some you know, timely pop, you know, from both
- 8:32Speaker 5: sides of the plate, and you know you're only as
- 8:34Speaker 5: good as your defense, and catching is one of the
- 8:36Speaker 5: most important, if not the most important position on the field.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, him is an intriguing guy.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I mean, the switch hitter element of it I think
- 8:45Speaker 2: is interesting. I mean the defense I think has declined
- 8:48Speaker 2: for him, and in recent seasons in the offense isn't
- 8:51Speaker 2: where he's at. I mean, he's not far removed from
- 8:53Speaker 2: an All Star campaign. I want to say that was
- 8:56Speaker 2: in twenty three, yep, the year they won the World Series,
- 9:00Speaker 2: which is an additional value.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I think he makes the team better.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I just think if you're bringing in him, you're probably
- 9:07Speaker 2: getting rid of Joey Bart, which I don't necessarily hate.
- 9:11Speaker 1: The idea of I would be open to it.
- 9:13Speaker 2: It would just it would be an interesting conversation because
- 9:17Speaker 2: I mean, the bat has been declining. Like you look
- 9:19Speaker 2: at the swing metrics, they're not necessarily pretty under the
- 9:23Speaker 2: hood right now. But I mean he's putting up better
- 9:27Speaker 2: offensive numbers than their primary catcher did last year, So
- 9:30Speaker 2: I don't hate that one.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Mark. What are your thoughts on it, and then you
- 9:34Speaker 1: go ahead and throw out a name as well.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm a little apprehensive on him. He's his ops
- 9:40Speaker 4: has been like six hundred the last two seasons, but again,
- 9:44Speaker 4: you look at twenty twenty three and that's an all
- 9:46Speaker 4: star city in there, just if you can retap into that,
- 9:50Speaker 4: especially a position of needs. So it's intriguing that you're
- 9:54Speaker 4: not going to find any perfect fits in this non
- 9:57Speaker 4: tenderpool necessarily, but he's definitely t and along the same
- 10:02Speaker 4: lines of Tim. Another twenty twenty three World Series winner
- 10:07Speaker 4: Adulas Garcia. I mean, he had thirty nine homers in
- 10:11Speaker 4: twenty twenty three, had a legendary postseason where he was
- 10:14Speaker 4: the World Series hero, and then has pretty much just
- 10:19Speaker 4: dropped off the past two years six eighty four ops
- 10:22Speaker 4: and twenty twenty four, and then he had like a
- 10:25Speaker 4: ninety three ops plus this past year, which not great.
- 10:31Speaker 4: But if you have that kind of pop sitting in there,
- 10:34Speaker 4: I mean, the pirates need every chance at power and
- 10:37Speaker 4: slugging that they can get. So that's that's pretty intriguing.
- 10:40Speaker 4: But he's probably I think he's projected to make around
- 10:42Speaker 4: like twelve million this year, so you have to factor
- 10:45Speaker 4: that into is if the Pirates have a limited budget,
- 10:48Speaker 4: do you want to risk twelve million on hoping that
- 10:50Speaker 4: a Doulas Garcia gets back to where he was in
- 10:53Speaker 4: twenty twenty three.
- 10:54Speaker 3: I just thought he might have been the most expensive.
- 10:56Speaker 5: That was the only crazy, you know, because you know,
- 10:59Speaker 5: I've been saying we need to impact back, but I
- 11:01Speaker 5: thought he was the most expensive on the list that
- 11:03Speaker 5: I saw. Absolutely, but I'm not against it either. I
- 11:07Speaker 5: was just trying to stay within the budget, but also
- 11:09Speaker 5: looking at other places that if I must spend money
- 11:11Speaker 5: on the bat, I want to spend money on it
- 11:12Speaker 5: and not hope for a bounce back year.
- 11:14Speaker 4: And I think Tim was projected for like six million,
- 11:17Speaker 4: so half the cost of Garcia.
- 11:19Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean a lot of the same things
- 11:23Speaker 2: that we just valued him, or like all the good
- 11:25Speaker 2: traits that we kind of talked about with him, aside
- 11:27Speaker 2: from the catcher element obviously, but you're talking about a
- 11:30Speaker 2: veteran guy who's not far removed from some of the
- 11:33Speaker 2: best years of his career, a guy who's won a championship.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I also think there's value in Adulas Garcia because they've
- 11:42Speaker 2: been missing a leadership presence from the Latin community. On
- 11:47Speaker 2: this team, I think someone who might connect a little
- 11:50Speaker 2: better with a guy like O'Neil Cruz. We saw the
- 11:53Speaker 2: benefit of having a rold As Chapman and what that
- 11:56Speaker 2: did for young pitchers in the organization the Latin Pictures
- 12:00Speaker 2: twenty twenty four, the way he connected with Luis Ortiz,
- 12:03Speaker 2: the way he connected with Dennis Santana.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I think that O'Neil really hasn't had.
- 12:09Speaker 2: That type of older figure to play alongside, and a
- 12:14Speaker 2: Doulas Garcia. I mean, I wouldn't pay twelve million for
- 12:17Speaker 2: a Dolas Garcia, but if I could get him for
- 12:19Speaker 2: one year under ten, I definitely would. I think he's
- 12:24Speaker 2: I mean, his glove is definitely not what it was,
- 12:28Speaker 2: but it's still probably an upgrade defensively compared to Reynolds
- 12:32Speaker 2: and right field.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Reynolds probably would rather.
- 12:35Speaker 3: He's got an absolute cannon.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he's got a cannon of which which is
- 12:39Speaker 2: what you want.
- 12:40Speaker 1: At pans apartment, right, you.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Can you can steal a lot of outs at second base,
- 12:47Speaker 2: and guys trying to get an extra ninety feet on
- 12:49Speaker 2: you probably don't know how deep that is, right, And
- 12:52Speaker 2: then you get a little too aggressive, you can get
- 12:54Speaker 2: a lot of outs that way, He's someone I could
- 12:57Speaker 2: even see platooning Reynolds with, where if it's against a
- 13:01Speaker 2: lefty on the mound, you could just Dhm and Reynolds
- 13:05Speaker 2: can play in right field or vice versa, give each
- 13:07Speaker 2: other some off days.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Don't hate that one.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Uh.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I was also thinking along the lines of outfielders I have.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I'm gonna throw two names out here. My number one person,
- 13:18Speaker 2: probably out of anyone, would be Mike talking just just
- 13:22Speaker 2: looking at it. And again, this is not a sexy
- 13:24Speaker 2: name by any means. He's he has. His numbers don't
- 13:27Speaker 2: necessarily jump off the page. But Mike Takman went and
- 13:30Speaker 2: played in Korea in twenty twenty two. Since then, his
- 13:33Speaker 2: last three seasons, his ops plus has have been one thirteen,
- 13:36Speaker 2: one eight, and one seventeen.
- 13:38Speaker 1: So he's been a bet.
- 13:39Speaker 2: He's been an above league gaverage hitter since going over
- 13:44Speaker 2: to the KBO and kind of reinventing the offensive side
- 13:48Speaker 2: of his game.
- 13:50Speaker 1: He is an average glove.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I think he was like exactly average as a defender
- 13:54Speaker 2: left side left hits from the left side.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I think he's a perfect platoon guy.
- 13:59Speaker 2: I think you acquire him and you can get the
- 14:01Speaker 2: equivalent of value that you got from like Connor Joe
- 14:04Speaker 2: in twenty twenty three, someone who's slightly above league average
- 14:08Speaker 2: at the plate, someone who can maybe hit you twenty doubles,
- 14:10Speaker 2: a guy who won't hurt you defensively, and if you
- 14:13Speaker 2: platoon him with the right guy, I mean.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Heck, you could platoon Garcia and Tuckman.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I guess in a way right in one world, like
- 14:21Speaker 2: you can make that work where righty lefty. I don't
- 14:25Speaker 2: know if I love that exact platoon, but I think
- 14:27Speaker 2: he would be like a perfect platoon guy to look into,
- 14:31Speaker 2: and someone who would absolutely not break your bank at all.
- 14:36Speaker 2: The other guy that I would look at as far
- 14:38Speaker 2: as the outfield situation is concerned, is JJ Bledet someone
- 14:43Speaker 2: who too like twenty four.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Yeah, he had a great.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Season for Oakland in twenty twenty four, their final year
- 14:50Speaker 2: in Oakland, so I can say that historic and it's
- 14:53Speaker 2: historically accurate. Yeah he was not Yeah, he was not
- 14:57Speaker 2: good last year. He was a negative war player at
- 15:00Speaker 2: a sub one hundred ohps plus. And he's that's kind
- 15:03Speaker 2: of been more connected to his career trends. I mean,
- 15:08Speaker 2: he's been up and down, more down than up. But
- 15:11Speaker 2: he's he's twenty seven. I think you could get him
- 15:14Speaker 2: for a very reasonable price. He's from western Pennsylvania, he
- 15:18Speaker 2: grew up near the Eerie area, so I don't think
- 15:22Speaker 2: it would be hard to sell him to come here.
- 15:25Speaker 2: And the reason I'm honing in on these two left
- 15:27Speaker 2: handed outfielders, left handed hitting outfielders, is because I'm looking
- 15:31Speaker 2: for Jacksonwinski replacements. And this isn't to say I'm like
- 15:35Speaker 2: chasing Jacksoninsky out of town, but there's not a lot
- 15:38Speaker 2: of confidence in him right now, and there shouldn't be.
- 15:42Speaker 2: He hasn't played good baseball in years. And I mean,
- 15:45Speaker 2: like Mark kind of laid out in the last segment,
- 15:48Speaker 2: Swinsky's a guy that they basically just created a fourth
- 15:51Speaker 2: option year for by paying him one point twenty five
- 15:54Speaker 2: mil so they can dfam and no one's probably gonna
- 15:57Speaker 2: claim that contract. Yeah, and you look at Takman and Bladet.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I look at those guys. I think those are better
- 16:03Speaker 2: baseball players than jack Sowinsky right now. And I would
- 16:06Speaker 2: bring them in to kind of create a competition. Yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 2: and just yeah, and just say I would. I mean,
- 16:13Speaker 2: I wouldn't even be opposed of signing all three. I'm
- 16:16Speaker 2: sure Bludey might even sign like a minor league deal,
- 16:18Speaker 2: who knows, and just have them compete in camp and say,
- 16:21Speaker 2: you know, one of you is gonna be our starting
- 16:23Speaker 2: right fielder or at least gonna be an opening day
- 16:26Speaker 2: roster guy.
- 16:27Speaker 1: The other two we'll see. I mean one of the other,
- 16:29Speaker 1: one of you might make the team.
- 16:31Speaker 2: One of you's gonna get DFA and not make the
- 16:33Speaker 2: team out of camp and create that competition.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I don't.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Again, that's not gonna make this team reach the next level,
- 16:40Speaker 2: but building that depth I think.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Is a good thing.
- 16:44Speaker 2: And those guys have all shown traits that give me
- 16:47Speaker 2: a lot more confidence in their ability to produce than
- 16:50Speaker 2: some of the guys they have at their position right now.
- 16:52Speaker 4: I really like the talkman pickup. I mean he's had
- 16:55Speaker 4: a three p fifty on base percentage every single year,
- 16:58Speaker 4: are higher since coming over from Korea. You don't had
- 17:01Speaker 4: nine home runs last year, But I mean the guy
- 17:03Speaker 4: gets on base, yeah, and that's all that might drive him.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Man.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Yeah, So I really like it. Good fit should be
- 17:11Speaker 4: pretty cheap, so.
- 17:12Speaker 5: I mean, I'm not opposed to either or just to
- 17:14Speaker 5: hit on a blue day. I understand he had the
- 17:16Speaker 5: great year in twenty four you said this past year
- 17:18Speaker 5: might have been more back to what he's more been
- 17:21Speaker 5: in line with with his career, but also taking a
- 17:23Speaker 5: step further. Could be a change of scene ory getting
- 17:25Speaker 5: closer to home, not playing in Oakland, playing you know,
- 17:29Speaker 5: not a big league stadium. It's a lot that goes on.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Not making an excuse for him, but as you said,
- 17:34Speaker 5: you might you might be able to find, you know,
- 17:36Speaker 5: lightning in a bottle where it's like, oh man, he's
- 17:38Speaker 5: got it. Not that he doesn't have something to play for,
- 17:40Speaker 5: but now instead of being like going from Oakland to
- 17:43Speaker 5: wherever he playing, now I'm close to home. Could be
- 17:46Speaker 5: you know a little incentive that you know, he's like,
- 17:48Speaker 5: oh man, I'm close to home, and that that could
- 17:51Speaker 5: be something at least something I've played against, you know,
- 17:54Speaker 5: Topman he as well too when he came back.
- 17:56Speaker 3: I thinks with the Yankees, very good at that.
- 17:59Speaker 5: I thought he was a solid outfielder, gave good at bats,
- 18:01Speaker 5: and uh, I mean that's ultimately what you want, is
- 18:04Speaker 5: they lineup that can produce good at bats, put you know,
- 18:06Speaker 5: pitcher in a tough spot and get on base.
- 18:09Speaker 3: So I'm not opposed either one.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I just look at some of these guys, and I
- 18:12Speaker 1: think that.
- 18:14Speaker 2: The Pirates could gain a lot from just deepening their
- 18:22Speaker 2: I think a lot of people believe this team already
- 18:24Speaker 2: has a lot of quada players, and they're not wrong.
- 18:27Speaker 2: But I think having established guys who aren't far removed
- 18:31Speaker 2: from being everyday big leaguers probably start the year in
- 18:34Speaker 2: Triple A, I think that's a sign.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Of a decent baseball team too.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Whereas, like you know, we look at last April, where
- 18:40Speaker 2: a couple of guys go down and there are players
- 18:43Speaker 2: playing every day in the major leagues for this team
- 18:46Speaker 2: who just should not be playing every day major league baseball.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Who have never done that before.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Where and if you load up on these guys who
- 18:53Speaker 2: are going to be cheap again, guys like Blade, guys
- 18:56Speaker 2: like Talkman, you load your system up with that, and
- 18:59Speaker 2: you structure their on track to say, hey, you know what,
- 19:01Speaker 2: you're gonna be a highly paid minor leaguer if we
- 19:04Speaker 2: keep you you know, uh, and you're and you're gonna
- 19:06Speaker 2: contribute at some point. I think that's something that a
- 19:09Speaker 2: lot of good organizations do. And uh again, yeah, it's
- 19:15Speaker 2: not gonna be the sexy move you make. But I
- 19:16Speaker 2: think if you know, an injury or two happens and
- 19:21Speaker 2: you need a center fielder, having JJ Bledet as a
- 19:24Speaker 2: backup option as opposed to who is yeah, yeah, like
- 19:29Speaker 2: I don't even know who would be the backup center
- 19:31Speaker 2: field right now? Yeah obviously yeah, but like, yeah, last
- 19:33Speaker 2: year you're relying on guys like Matt Gorsky, g Wan Day,
- 19:37Speaker 2: Alexander Canario. I think these are better options than those guys,
- 19:41Speaker 2: and they and they shouldn't cost much more.
- 19:44Speaker 5: I mean, that makes a lot of sense. I'm gonna
- 19:46Speaker 5: be honest with you, you know, hearing the list of
- 19:50Speaker 5: names that just threw out there, not trying to be funny,
- 19:52Speaker 5: I don't know any of those guys. And you know
- 19:56Speaker 5: I'm big on the defense side of I've been talking
- 19:58Speaker 5: big with you know. We need a power back, need
- 20:00Speaker 5: a parabat, need a parabat. But also, you're only as
- 20:03Speaker 5: good as your depth is. So to your point, though,
- 20:06Speaker 5: you do have to take care of depth pieces and
- 20:08Speaker 5: do not let that be the last thing you take
- 20:09Speaker 5: care of. If that's something you can get out ahead of,
- 20:13Speaker 5: that is definitely something that you need because every team
- 20:15Speaker 5: is going to go through.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Injuries and something the Pirates cantrue.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is this is the money that
- 20:22Speaker 2: you invested in Tommy fam and Andrew Hany last year.
- 20:27Speaker 1: You could sign two of these guys probably with that money.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Another guy that I want to highlight before we move
- 20:32Speaker 2: on another depth piece. I think this is a guy
- 20:35Speaker 2: who if you sign him, he's absolutely on your major
- 20:39Speaker 2: league team, is.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Ramon your ISAs.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I love what he provides defensively, I think you're essentially
- 20:46Speaker 2: adding another Triolo, maybe someone who's a more veteran version
- 20:50Speaker 2: of a.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Little bit more been around a little bit more though, Yeah.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Been around a little bit more, played some more meaningful baseball,
- 20:58Speaker 2: and I like the versus utility there. I think that
- 21:02Speaker 2: he could be a good placeholder. It's certain infield positions
- 21:04Speaker 2: if you want, if you want to have a guy
- 21:06Speaker 2: waiting there until Carr Griffin gets caught up. I know
- 21:09Speaker 2: he's primarily a third baseman, but if you if you're
- 21:12Speaker 2: not confident in Jared Triolo being your everyday third basement,
- 21:15Speaker 2: or if you acquire a marquee third base prospects, say
- 21:20Speaker 2: they get a Mayo example for example, in this uh
- 21:24Speaker 2: in this hypothetical Mitch Keller trade with the Orioles that
- 21:27Speaker 2: we've discussed in prior shows. If you don't want to
- 21:30Speaker 2: just commit third base to this newcomer, or even if
- 21:34Speaker 2: they signed someone from Japan or whoever else, if they
- 21:36Speaker 2: have a young guy that they bring in to be
- 21:38Speaker 2: the future at third base, I think a guy like
- 21:41Speaker 2: your Eya is signing him to kind of be that
- 21:43Speaker 2: placeholder doesn't hurt the team.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Again, Yeah, it's a it's a veteran, it's I think
- 21:50Speaker 1: it's it's something.
- 21:51Speaker 2: It's a guy that good teams have, like Miguel Rojas
- 21:54Speaker 2: on the Dodgers, someone like that, who you don't sign
- 21:57Speaker 2: him to be your everyday player.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But having those guys on the bench.
- 21:59Speaker 2: No knowing that, you know what, one of your infielders
- 22:02Speaker 2: is gonna pull a hammy at some point this year.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Someone is gonna get hit by a pitch on the
- 22:06Speaker 2: hand and have the miss six weeks. Someone is gonna
- 22:09Speaker 2: go through a slump, someone's gonna go on the paternity list,
- 22:13Speaker 2: or you know, there's gonna stuff's gonna happen throughout.
- 22:15Speaker 1: One hundred and sixty two game seasons.
- 22:17Speaker 2: And when you have more of these guys who are
- 22:19Speaker 2: everyday players, and some of them everyday players on playoff
- 22:22Speaker 2: teams last year, I think that that just it makes
- 22:25Speaker 2: your floor a lot lower. And we saw last year
- 22:28Speaker 2: that the floor can get pretty low when you don't
- 22:32Speaker 2: spend on contracts like this. Yes, so all right, we're
- 22:38Speaker 2: gonna take another quick break, and then once we get back,
- 22:40Speaker 2: we're gonna review the first big trade of the Major
- 22:44Speaker 2: league off season and how it is impacting the Pirates.
- 22:48Speaker 1: But first a word from our sponsors.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Kratz.
- 22:51Speaker 6: We picked you to talk about Meundi's not just because
- 22:54Speaker 6: they're ridiculously comfortable, but also because they are very festive.
- 22:59Speaker 6: When the holiday season hits, you go on the website
- 23:02Speaker 6: and there are just so many more designs to check out,
- 23:04Speaker 6: and they just scream. Eric Kratz getting little matching sets
- 23:09Speaker 6: with everybody that he knows, you know what.
- 23:13Speaker 5: They're called me Yundies, not you undies.
- 23:15Speaker 1: So you go in and.
- 23:16Speaker 6: You say, this one's for me, this set is for me,
- 23:19Speaker 6: this is what is good for me, not you undies.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Me Undies, a lot of different ones that choose from.
- 23:26Speaker 6: I'm so confused, But what I do know is that
- 23:28Speaker 6: you can knock out all of your holiday gifting needs
- 23:31Speaker 6: today with me Undies and to get the exclusive holiday
- 23:34Speaker 6: deals up to fifty percent off meyundies dot com slash
- 23:37Speaker 6: foul enter promo code foul. That's me undies dot com
- 23:42Speaker 6: slash foul promo code is foul for up to fifty
- 23:46Speaker 6: percent off matching holiday prints with your person.
- 23:50Speaker 2: You can't beat that, all right, So, guys, first big
- 23:56Speaker 2: trade of the twenty twenty five off season took place
- 24:02Speaker 2: last week. Grayson Rodriguez, arguably the best starter on the
- 24:07Speaker 2: Oriel staff, gets traded away to the Angels for Taylor Ward,
- 24:13Speaker 2: a slugger that we talked about already on this show.
- 24:16Speaker 2: A guy in the final year of his contract, someone
- 24:18Speaker 2: who's gonna make around probably twelve million is at his
- 24:20Speaker 2: production around there twelve to fourteen in arbitration. An interesting
- 24:26Speaker 2: move because I mean, Rodriguez is pre arb right, is
- 24:30Speaker 2: he pre arbor and he's still on his rookie deal
- 24:32Speaker 2: for sure, had a really really strong year. I thought
- 24:38Speaker 2: this year obviously has the arm history or the issues
- 24:42Speaker 2: of injuries. The Baltimore needs pitching and they just traded
- 24:49Speaker 2: for another bat. I guess we'll start by asking you this, Josh,
- 24:54Speaker 2: I mean, what do you think of this move in general?
- 24:58Speaker 3: To be honest.
- 24:59Speaker 5: I I mean, all trades can make you raise an
- 25:02Speaker 5: eyebrow or say it makes sense whatever, but uh not
- 25:05Speaker 5: that I covered the Angel with the Riders, but I
- 25:06Speaker 5: didn't see this one, especially for you know, Ward being
- 25:08Speaker 5: last year's contract and a guy like Grayson Rodriguez, as
- 25:12Speaker 5: you said, still under arbitration, but also you know, an
- 25:14Speaker 5: electric arm. Nothing taken away from Taylor Ward, but you know,
- 25:18Speaker 5: do they plan does Baltimore plan to keep Taylor past that?
- 25:22Speaker 5: But that obviously usually those deals are work out once
- 25:25Speaker 5: is traded, you know, unless something was to come out.
- 25:27Speaker 5: But you know that's also something that Baltimore probably saw,
- 25:31Speaker 5: where we want to upgrade our outfit.
- 25:33Speaker 3: We we're going for.
- 25:34Speaker 5: You know, they were just in the playoffs, not this
- 25:36Speaker 5: past year, but last year, and I'm sure they were
- 25:39Speaker 5: trying to find ways to retoot their team to get
- 25:41Speaker 5: back to where it was, and you know, they probably
- 25:44Speaker 5: feel confident that they could you know, upgrade their outfield
- 25:47Speaker 5: while letting go of you know, I w't won't to
- 25:49Speaker 5: say letting go of you know, Grayson Rodriguez because you know,
- 25:52Speaker 5: he's got some electric stuff. Had a great year, but
- 25:56Speaker 5: as you said, arm issues, maybe there's something there that
- 25:58Speaker 5: Baltimore was like, you know, maybe we don't want to
- 26:01Speaker 5: deal with the what if, or you know, maybe there's
- 26:03Speaker 5: something a little bit more concerning. But you know, for Pittsburgh,
- 26:07Speaker 5: you know, hey, Baltimore, y'all just lost Grayson or you know,
- 26:10Speaker 5: you trade a picture, you need an arm, we need
- 26:12Speaker 5: a bad It could line up. I'm sure there's some
- 26:15Speaker 5: other teams are gonna be calling too, but definitely makes
- 26:18Speaker 5: you look a little bit more to say Baltimore and
- 26:21Speaker 5: Pittsburgh could be lining up because you I would like
- 26:23Speaker 5: to think that Baltimore be looking to replace or you know,
- 26:26Speaker 5: fill in the spot for Grayson.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I believe I read something on the Athletic I
- 26:31Speaker 2: think it was I think it was Jim Bowden, a
- 26:34Speaker 2: frequent contributor to this very network, who said the Angels
- 26:37Speaker 2: didn't look into the the arm injury history.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I don't think he before making this.
- 26:43Speaker 4: I don't think he had like a medical clearance before
- 26:45Speaker 4: the trade or anything like that. I don't know. I
- 26:49Speaker 4: saw something along that those lines.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and Mark, you know what, why don't you look
- 26:56Speaker 1: that up real quick?
- 26:57Speaker 2: While I while I, uh, well, I'm pretty sure when.
- 27:02Speaker 3: You get traded, you know, they're talking. Hey, let's real,
- 27:04Speaker 3: we get off with his history.
- 27:06Speaker 2: What what treatment does get you know that we are
- 27:09Speaker 2: talking about We are talking about the Angels right now,
- 27:12Speaker 2: and that's the Angels have been trying to put together
- 27:17Speaker 2: a pitching staff for Josh. I mean since you were playing, really,
- 27:21Speaker 2: I mean, it's been.
- 27:22Speaker 1: A lot of time, long ago. Yeah, so you're playing
- 27:27Speaker 1: here in Pittsburgh.
- 27:29Speaker 3: There you go.
- 27:30Speaker 4: I I just got it. Yeah, I on foul Territory.
- 27:33Speaker 4: They were interviewing Grayson Rodriguez and he said he wasn't
- 27:37Speaker 4: required to get a physical before being traded to the Angels.
- 27:41Speaker 5: Is that I don't think that's necessary. There's nothing because
- 27:45Speaker 5: I've been traded. I got traded from Washington to Oakland
- 27:48Speaker 5: in twenty one and I remember walking in when I
- 27:53Speaker 5: was traded. You know, they just hey, you got traded
- 27:55Speaker 5: to Oakland. But I know amongst the teams there's some
- 27:58Speaker 5: medical things that they send.
- 27:59Speaker 3: To each other.
- 28:00Speaker 5: I didn't necessarily, you know obviously, when I got to Oakland,
- 28:03Speaker 5: A put you through Okay, let's check your file that
- 28:05Speaker 5: they said, Okay, how's this feel?
- 28:07Speaker 3: How's is that good?
- 28:08Speaker 5: But I mean, but that's always one of the things
- 28:12Speaker 5: that can hold up a trade or make a trade
- 28:14Speaker 5: and not go through now so here that they didn't
- 28:16Speaker 5: even want to.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Look at him.
- 28:17Speaker 5: That's I mean, I don't want to say it, but
- 28:20Speaker 5: that sounds like desperation.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:21Speaker 4: So yeah, physicals aren't required for MB trades, but I
- 28:25Speaker 4: mean you do have to send the medical paperwork to
- 28:27Speaker 4: the other team, like the medical records, so they at
- 28:31Speaker 4: least got that. But yeah, it given his concern especially
- 28:34Speaker 4: with like the prinsipers and his elbow and everything that
- 28:37Speaker 4: kind of led to all the other issues, I'd want
- 28:40Speaker 4: to check that out if I'm the Angels and giving
- 28:41Speaker 4: up ward for him, I mean, but I mean, and
- 28:45Speaker 4: just going into the Grayson Rodriguez real quick. He was
- 28:48Speaker 4: the second best pitching prospect in twenty twenty three, behind
- 28:53Speaker 4: obviously Paul Skeens. So this guy has a lot of talent,
- 28:59Speaker 4: was obviously has been hampered by injuries a lot. But
- 29:03Speaker 4: it's a crazy trade that it just I can't believe what.
- 29:07Speaker 4: I did not think the starting pitcher market was going
- 29:10Speaker 4: to be like that. Pretty shocking trade from the Orioles.
- 29:14Speaker 4: I think that was kind of the general reaction across
- 29:16Speaker 4: the league. That's hows Grease and Rodriguez has to be hurt,
- 29:20Speaker 4: because otherwise this does not make sense.
- 29:23Speaker 3: Makes sense?
- 29:24Speaker 2: Well, I have three takeaways from this steal, all of
- 29:26Speaker 2: them kind of pertaining the Pirates. One, I think this
- 29:31Speaker 2: trade opens up a need for pitching in Baltimore, right,
- 29:36Speaker 2: I mean they they already were going to have to
- 29:39Speaker 2: add pitching this offseason, and now they have an even
- 29:42Speaker 2: greater need for that. And uh, I mean they did
- 29:46Speaker 2: so by taking on salary, which is interesting. I mean
- 29:49Speaker 2: like they take they take on more salary with Ward contract,
- 29:52Speaker 2: like for trading away a preord pitcher, So like they're
- 29:56Speaker 2: adding to their payroll and still haven't really addressed their
- 29:58Speaker 2: big their big team needs, which maybe means they're looking
- 30:02Speaker 2: for affordable pitching and.
- 30:03Speaker 1: I know a team that has a lot of that.
- 30:04Speaker 1: That's my first big takeaway.
- 30:06Speaker 2: My second big takeaway is, man, people are willing to
- 30:13Speaker 2: pay something for young pitching, you know, like I don't,
- 30:18Speaker 2: I don't know, like Rodriguez to me, like that's that's
- 30:22Speaker 2: a valuable asset. But with the arm injury history like
- 30:25Speaker 2: Taylor Ward, I don't, I don't know who overpaid here, right,
- 30:28Speaker 2: Like I could make an argument for both sides, but
- 30:32Speaker 2: I think this is a very unique intro to like
- 30:36Speaker 2: how this market's gonna be set. And I think the
- 30:39Speaker 2: third thing is you see how desperate the Angels are
- 30:42Speaker 2: to get more young pitching, so maybe they could be
- 30:45Speaker 2: a potential trade partner as well for the Pirates. And
- 30:49Speaker 2: and I guess I'll open up the Florida to ask
- 30:51Speaker 2: this question, when you look at this trade, do you
- 30:54Speaker 2: think that it's gonna Do you think this trade shows
- 30:58Speaker 2: that a veteran pitcher like Keller is going to be
- 31:01Speaker 2: more valuable? Or maybe the Pirates should pivot and start
- 31:04Speaker 2: looking to trade some of their younger arms who similar
- 31:07Speaker 2: to Rodriguez. I mean, some of these guys haven't had
- 31:09Speaker 2: the same level of major league success, but are high
- 31:12Speaker 2: rated pitching prospects with a history of arm history. If
- 31:16Speaker 2: you could get something like this for those guys, you
- 31:18Speaker 2: consider doing that and keeping Mitch Keller.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Is that at me or Mark go ahead?
- 31:27Speaker 1: It's all of our show ye.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Good question.
- 31:31Speaker 5: But my question with that is pitching is something that
- 31:37Speaker 5: the Pirates have a lot of, so holding onto that
- 31:40Speaker 5: doesn't really make your team better if you're trying to
- 31:42Speaker 5: better the offense. So that would be my only rebuttal
- 31:46Speaker 5: to that because I mean, I think it makes Mitch
- 31:49Speaker 5: that much more valuable because one, you don't have the
- 31:52Speaker 5: question of juries, but you also know what you're getting
- 31:53Speaker 5: a consistent guy that's going to go out there every
- 31:55Speaker 5: fifth day, eat innings and take the ball. So I
- 31:59Speaker 5: think it makes it a little tricky because, as I said,
- 32:03Speaker 5: I didn't want to say it sounded like desperation, but
- 32:06Speaker 5: if you're taking that on, there's a lot of risk
- 32:08Speaker 5: with it, but the reward can be great and that's
- 32:11Speaker 5: something that they're probably willing to, you know, deal with.
- 32:14Speaker 5: And I guess with Baltimore they have a lot of
- 32:17Speaker 5: prospects if they want to go get another picture.
- 32:18Speaker 3: I guess they figure they you.
- 32:20Speaker 5: Know, can not necessarily replace Grayson Rodriguez. But you know,
- 32:25Speaker 5: one picture doesn't make its team. You know, you're only
- 32:27Speaker 5: as good as your whole team, your staff, everything. So
- 32:30Speaker 5: you know, maybe it's a situation where they're looking to
- 32:32Speaker 5: bring back somebody that's you know a little bit more
- 32:34Speaker 5: proven and that they know that they could possibly count on.
- 32:37Speaker 3: That's just something that I would say.
- 32:38Speaker 5: But for me, I feel like the Pirates with Kellor,
- 32:40Speaker 5: it makes them that much more valuable just because you know,
- 32:43Speaker 5: what you're getting with them, there's no question mark of health,
- 32:45Speaker 5: there's no question mark of consistency.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, if you can get the same return
- 32:51Speaker 4: package for Mitch Keller as say, like a younger guy
- 32:54Speaker 4: that's controllable with upside, like Ashcraft and Burrows pair together,
- 32:57Speaker 4: I'm giving I'm keeping Mitch undred percent, that would be awesome.
- 33:02Speaker 4: I don't necessarily know it without the Pirates giving up
- 33:06Speaker 4: like Abobb, a Chandler or like a Seth Hernandez, like
- 33:10Speaker 4: those really top tier prospects that might be closer to
- 33:13Speaker 4: what Grayson Rodriguez was back in twenty twenty three and
- 33:17Speaker 4: closer to the what he is now. But yeah, I mean,
- 33:20Speaker 4: if you can send some of the younger guys and
- 33:22Speaker 4: keep Mitch Keller, that makes the Pirates a better team,
- 33:24Speaker 4: I think. And if you again, it's I really think
- 33:28Speaker 4: Mitch Keller is going to bring the biggest return just
- 33:31Speaker 4: because he's so so reliable, so consistent, everything you want
- 33:36Speaker 4: if you're a contending team. But that's even more reason
- 33:39Speaker 4: for the Pirates to keep him.
- 33:40Speaker 2: So all right, Well, about to wrap this show up,
- 33:44Speaker 2: but before we do, want to remind everyone hit that
