- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33Take a minute and consider how many times
- 0:37have you used electricity today?
- 0:41If you're like me, you're using electricity even
- 0:44when you're asleep, because I've got my alarm
- 0:46clock plugged in, my phone is charging, so
- 0:49things are happening with electricity in my house,
- 0:51the fridge is running, even when I'm asleep.
- 0:55Maybe you use electricity for heating your home
- 0:57too, so there's probably lots of ways that
- 0:59you're benefiting even when you're not fully conscious.
- 1:02And then as soon as I'm waking up,
- 1:03I'm using electricity for the water to run.
- 1:06We're on a well, and so when the
- 1:08electricity goes out, we don't get water pressure.
- 1:12And so even every time I flip on
- 1:14the sink or the shower, I'm using electricity,
- 1:17that water pump is using it.
- 1:19And then when I'm starting my car, obviously
- 1:20there's electrical components there.
- 1:21When I walk into my workplace, there's the
- 1:23lights.
- 1:25I'm using electricity all day, every day, and
- 1:28usually I don't think about it at all.
- 1:30I don't even give it a second thought.
- 1:33And now what I want you to think
- 1:34about, because if you're like me, if you're
- 1:36using electricity all the time, is how many
- 1:39electricians have served you in your life?
- 1:42Wouldn't that be an amazing statistic to find
- 1:44out how many different electricians have been involved
- 1:47in the electrical systems that have served you
- 1:50in your life somehow?
- 1:51This is one of my fantasies.
- 1:53It's kind of like having video game stats
- 1:54about my life, like how many pounds of
- 1:56cheese have I eaten in my life?
- 1:58That might be a scary one for me
- 2:00to see.
- 2:00But how many electricians have served me in
- 2:03my life?
- 2:04In our modern, complex, advanced technological society, we
- 2:09often don't see the human beings who have
- 2:12been involved in very direct care for ourselves.
- 2:15Way back in the ancient world, when it
- 2:17was small tribal communities, if somebody did anything
- 2:20technological to help you, you probably knew them.
- 2:22You were probably related to them.
- 2:24But now there's thousands of strangers that we
- 2:27don't know who in their daily work have
- 2:29served us.
- 2:30That's how interconnected, how interdependent we are.
- 2:33And that could be good for us to
- 2:34remember.
- 2:36There's a writer who I really appreciate named
- 2:38John Van Sloten.
- 2:39He's a pastor up in Calgary.
- 2:42And he writes about this role of electricians
- 2:45specifically in his book, Every Job a Parable.
- 2:48What Walmart greeters, nurses, and astronauts tell us
- 2:51about God.
- 2:53So let me read his notes here.
- 2:56Consider the job of an electrician.
- 2:59Tough work, hard on the hands, often working
- 3:02out in the elements, at times dangerous, surely
- 3:05a bit tedious once you've wired in your
- 3:07500th wall receptacle.
- 3:09And still, God is moving there.
- 3:12What electricians love, I have learned, is energizing
- 3:15and enlivening things.
- 3:16They get excited by the light and power
- 3:18that they bring through their work.
- 3:20There is something about the moment when the
- 3:22lights first come on in a newly constructed
- 3:24building that is just right to them.
- 3:27And then he's actually got a couple quotes
- 3:29from electricians.
- 3:30So this is a quote from Corey Adams,
- 3:32a master electrician.
- 3:34There's this feeling that was the final touch
- 3:36that the room needed.
- 3:38You've got beautiful carpet, paint, and finishes, and
- 3:40now you've lit it up.
- 3:41It's one of the most satisfying things to
- 3:43hit that switch and see everything go, ah.
- 3:47And then another quote here from Arnold Dees,
- 3:49also a master electrician.
- 3:51I take tremendous satisfaction in turning on the
- 3:53lights, but there's also great joy in hooking
- 3:55up big motors or compressors or cranes.
- 3:58This unit just sits there dormant until we
- 4:01hook it up, and then it comes to
- 4:02life.
- 4:03The other day we hooked up an overhead
- 4:05crane.
- 4:05It's a beautiful system, an engineering feat, and
- 4:07I applaud the engineers who designed it.
- 4:09But until we get the wire and everything
- 4:11hooked up, it's just sitting there.
- 4:13And then when you test it, and that
- 4:14motor comes to life, and it starts to
- 4:16move across the beam, that's so cool.
- 4:19That's what I love.
- 4:21So I really appreciate how John Van Sloten
- 4:24here went to the trouble of interviewing real
- 4:25life electricians, and I also love the enthusiasm
- 4:28that these two electricians bring to their work.
- 4:31Corey Adams and Arnold Dees talking about what
- 4:34it's like to turn on the lights and
- 4:36to see everything come to life.
- 4:39Now, I want to use this as an
- 4:41analogy for every type of work.
- 4:43With electricians, it's visually dramatic, right?
- 4:45You literally flip a switch, boom, and you
- 4:46can see.
- 4:47But your work in some way, I think,
- 4:50also gives that enlivening power to something.
- 4:55Otherwise, nobody would be paying you to do
- 4:56it.
- 4:57So I want to take a moment in
- 4:59this episode to think about how our work,
- 5:03when we do it to serve others, has
- 5:07deep meaning in three different ways.
- 5:09So three different ways that our work has
- 5:10deep meaning when we do it to serve
- 5:12others.
- 5:13So the first way is how our work
- 5:15contributes to what's called the common good.
- 5:18The second way is the way that it
- 5:20images God and the world.
- 5:22And then the third way is how it's
- 5:25the stuff of salvation.
- 5:26We'll get to that.
- 5:28What do I mean by the stuff of
- 5:29salvation?
- 5:29Okay, so first, how does your work serve
- 5:32the common good?
- 5:33Let me go back to John Van Sloten
- 5:35here, talking about electricians specifically.
- 5:39We are all called through our image-bearing
- 5:41work to help people thrive and flourish.
- 5:44The unique way that electricians do this is
- 5:46by building orderly connecting systems that enable an
- 5:49enlivening power to come to a not-yet
- 5:52-fully-itself device or place.
- 5:55I love that turn of phrase, not-yet
- 5:58-fully-itself device or place.
- 6:01There's this sense that once the wiring is
- 6:03in, the place is complete.
- 6:04It's full of life.
- 6:06It's able to function.
- 6:08Well, if this is true for electricians, it's
- 6:10also true for your work.
- 6:12And again, sometimes this may be indirect, right?
- 6:16With an electrician, it's kind of obvious.
- 6:18You flip the lights, the lights are on,
- 6:19the lights serve the people in that building.
- 6:21With other jobs, it may be even more
- 6:23obvious.
- 6:23Like I think about my wife's job as
- 6:25a nurse practitioner.
- 6:26She's literally right there with patients, helping them
- 6:30with their illness in very practical, hands-on
- 6:33ways.
- 6:33It's clear that she's serving that patient when
- 6:36she's with them.
- 6:37For others, it may be more abstract.
- 6:39Like think about somebody doing the work of
- 6:41finance.
- 6:42It could feel like this is kind of
- 6:44abstract.
- 6:45Like, you know, I manage investments.
- 6:48Well, how does that help the world?
- 6:49And you might also think about justice dynamics
- 6:51and how sometimes investments can contribute to things
- 6:53that are wrong with the world.
- 6:55And those reflections definitely deserve our attention.
- 6:58But it's important to note that if everybody
- 7:01who was investing in finance quit their jobs,
- 7:03the economy would collapse, right?
- 7:05There's a kind of lifeblood of movement that
- 7:08happens because there are people who are managing
- 7:10investments and making loans and helping people qualify
- 7:13for home ownership or for starting small businesses
- 7:17or for other things like that.
- 7:19The interconnected reality of the economy, while it's
- 7:22far from perfect and there's definitely room for
- 7:24reform and for approximating justice more and more
- 7:27fully over time, it is part of what
- 7:30serves human beings, right?
- 7:32The fact that people have the ability to
- 7:34go buy things and build things with cash.
- 7:37That's good.
- 7:38That serves the common good.
- 7:41So whatever your work is, whether it's kind
- 7:43of more direct and immediate, like a nurse
- 7:45or healthcare worker, or whether it's kind of
- 7:49instrumental, like an electrician where you're creating a
- 7:52tool that serves somebody, or even if it's
- 7:53more abstract, like in the world of finance,
- 7:55more indirect, think about how your work serves
- 7:59the common good.
- 8:00That's one way that your work is deeply
- 8:02meaningful.
- 8:03There's meaning that's already there in your work.
- 8:06We talked about decoding meaning, right?
- 8:08There are things that we can do to
- 8:10contribute to the meaning of our work, but
- 8:11there's also meaning that's already there.
- 8:13And I would argue that this common good
- 8:15type of meaning is already there.
- 8:18Your work exists, someone's paying you to do
- 8:20it because it contributes something good in some
- 8:22way.
- 8:22So think about what that is.
- 8:23That's one way that your work is meaningful.
- 8:26Okay, but flip side of that, you can
- 8:29also contribute to that kind of meaning in
- 8:32your work by doing it with an attitude
- 8:35of service.
- 8:36So in our last episode, we kind of
- 8:37said a good question to ask is how
- 8:40can I help, right?
- 8:41That kind of draws us towards what it
- 8:42means to be human, what it means to
- 8:43be a servant, the way that God created
- 8:45us to be.
- 8:46Well, think about that writ large with your
- 8:49job.
- 8:49How can I help in my work as
- 8:52a whole?
- 8:52How does my job help?
- 8:54If you think about how your work contributes
- 8:57to the common good and then you approach
- 8:59your work in order to serve that common
- 9:02good, it becomes a conscious motivation for you.
- 9:05Then your work is actually even more meaningful.
- 9:08Then you've added to the meaning of your
- 9:10work because now you're not just contributing to
- 9:13the common good unconsciously, you're consciously serving people
- 9:16by doing your work for the common good.
- 9:19So that's where decoding meets contributing to meeting
- 9:23right there in the common good.
- 9:24So I just encourage you, take some time
- 9:26to think about that.
- 9:27It could even empower you to bring a
- 9:29new level of motivation to your work.
- 9:32Okay, so that's one way that doing work
- 9:33as service can be deeply meaningful, contributing to
- 9:36the common good.
- 9:37Okay, what about this idea of like imaging
- 9:39God?
- 9:40We've talked about this in a number of
- 9:41different episodes.
- 9:42Let's go back to John Van Sloten, who
- 9:44just talked about the electricians flipping on the
- 9:46switch.
- 9:47He writes, In this way, electricians are like
- 9:50the God who made a way for his
- 9:52Holy Spirit, his life-giving breath, to come
- 9:55into and enliven this world.
- 9:58Isn't that a really interesting analogy?
- 10:01Maybe that God sends forth his spirit and
- 10:02things come to life.
- 10:04Electricity is kind of like that.
- 10:06Electricians, they're like imaging that life-giving power
- 10:08of God when they wire things in for
- 10:11human flourishing.
- 10:13And so again, I would encourage you, even
- 10:15if it might be a little bit more
- 10:16abstract, there is some way in which your
- 10:19work can image the life of God.
- 10:21There's something about God's creativity, his character that
- 10:24comes through in your work.
- 10:26And then again, the same dynamic, there might
- 10:28be something to decode there, but then something
- 10:30to contribute there.
- 10:31Like if you realize, oh, like God loves
- 10:34human creativity and finance makes human creativity possible
- 10:38by creating financial instruments and credit and things
- 10:41that make it possible for people to go
- 10:42build things.
- 10:43Now, you could consciously have that sense of,
- 10:47maybe even starting your day with a prayer
- 10:48like that, like God, may your creative energy
- 10:50shine through this work today.
- 10:53You're imaging God.
- 10:55So there's something to decode there, but also
- 10:56you can contribute to that imaging of God
- 10:58by doing it prayerfully, doing it consciously.
- 11:01You're imaging something about God's character through your
- 11:04work.
- 11:06Okay, third thing.
- 11:08Work is the stuff of salvation.
- 11:10What do I mean by this?
- 11:11Okay, I want to go back to the
- 11:12Philippians passage that we looked at in our
- 11:14last episode.
- 11:16Philippians 2, 1 through 13.
- 11:18Just looking at those final two verses, because
- 11:21there's a lot of work language in those
- 11:23verses.
- 11:24So let me read them here.
- 11:25Paul's writing, Therefore, my dear friends, as you
- 11:28have always obeyed, not only in my presence,
- 11:30but now much more in my absence, continue
- 11:33to work out your salvation with fear and
- 11:35trembling.
- 11:36For it is God who works in you
- 11:38to will and to act in order to
- 11:40fulfill his good purpose.
- 11:45Okay, a lot of layers there.
- 11:47There's something that we're called to do.
- 11:49We're called to work out our salvation with
- 11:52fear and trembling.
- 11:54Okay, at the same time, there's something that
- 11:55God is doing.
- 11:56For it is God who works in you
- 11:58to will and to act in order to
- 12:00fulfill his good purpose.
- 12:02So we're working as God works in us.
- 12:05This is one of those scriptural references that
- 12:06kind of inspired the liturgy where at the
- 12:08end of each episode, I pray asking Jesus
- 12:10to do his work in us as we
- 12:12do our work with him.
- 12:15But the idea there is that there's an
- 12:16interconnectedness.
- 12:18Our work is doing something, but only because
- 12:21God's work is there to meet us.
- 12:24And as usual, I want to go to
- 12:25Dallas Willard to kind of unpack this idea
- 12:27a little bit further, because there are ways
- 12:29we could get thrown off about this.
- 12:31We could think that we're somehow earning something
- 12:34from God, like earning his favor, or like
- 12:36we have to work so hard in order
- 12:37to get him to accept us.
- 12:38And those ideas are deceptions, misunderstandings, false teachings.
- 12:42And yet there is an active vision of
- 12:45life with God that this passage and many
- 12:47others give us.
- 12:49So let me read this interview from Dallas
- 12:50Willard.
- 12:52Dallas says, the enemy in our time is
- 12:54not human capacity or over activism, but the
- 12:58enemy is passivity.
- 13:00The idea that God has done everything and
- 13:02you are essentially left to be a consumer
- 13:04of the grace of God, and that the
- 13:06only thing you have to do is find
- 13:08out how to do that and do it
- 13:09regularly.
- 13:10I think this is a terrible mistake and
- 13:12accounts for the withdrawal of active Christians from
- 13:15so many areas of life where they should
- 13:16be present.
- 13:17It also accounts for the lack of spiritual
- 13:19growth, for you can be sure that if
- 13:21you do not act in an advised fashion
- 13:23consistently and resolutely, you will not grow spiritually.
- 13:26We all know that Jesus said in John
- 13:2815, without me, you can do nothing.
- 13:30We need to add, if you do nothing,
- 13:32it will most assuredly be without him.
- 13:35Of course, we must be concerned about work's
- 13:37righteousness.
- 13:38I talk a lot about the value of
- 13:40spiritual disciplines, but also the danger of using
- 13:42them as if they help us earn our
- 13:43salvation.
- 13:44But it is crucial to realize that grace
- 13:46is not opposed to effort, but to earning.
- 13:50Earning is an attitude.
- 13:52Effort is action.
- 13:55Okay, that was really dense.
- 13:57A lot of nuggets from Dallas there.
- 13:58We'll include a link to the interview like
- 13:59we always do in the show notes if
- 14:01you want to unpack that and read it
- 14:02again.
- 14:03But I want to point out this idea
- 14:05of passivity versus effort, right?
- 14:08Dallas is saying it's work's righteousness is the
- 14:10false teaching that we earn our salvation, but
- 14:12the true teaching of scripture is that we
- 14:14do apply effort.
- 14:16And again, that's what Paul is saying in
- 14:17verse 12 here.
- 14:19Continue to work out your salvation with fear
- 14:22and trembling.
- 14:23This is active language.
- 14:24This is, we could paraphrase, put effort into
- 14:27your salvation.
- 14:28Now that might sound strange because it's like,
- 14:30wait, I'm not earning my salvation, but what
- 14:32does it mean to put effort into my
- 14:33salvation?
- 14:35Well, then it says, for it is God
- 14:36who works in you.
- 14:38Dallas talks about God's grace in that quote
- 14:40as well, that grace is not opposed to
- 14:43effort.
- 14:44It's not opposed to action.
- 14:45God's grace, when it fills us, actually activates
- 14:48us.
- 14:48It energizes us like that electricity, right?
- 14:50We're coming to life with the action of
- 14:52God inside of us.
- 14:54That's grace.
- 14:56And so when we think about our workplace,
- 14:59our work is a place where we can
- 15:03work out our salvation with fear and trembling.
- 15:05In fact, it's one of the primary places
- 15:07where we can work out our salvation with
- 15:09fear and trembling if we do our work
- 15:12in order to serve others.
- 15:14Again, so I talk a lot in this
- 15:15podcast and in my writings and my courses
- 15:17about how God is at work, right?
- 15:19The title of the podcast is Finding God
- 15:21at Work.
- 15:22But I would say, even though God's already
- 15:24there, God will not automatically make your work
- 15:28what it's supposed to be.
- 15:29In other words, he won't do it without
- 15:30involving you.
- 15:31The way that our work becomes what it's
- 15:33meant to be in God is when we
- 15:35are engaged with God in working out our
- 15:38salvation in our workplace.
- 15:40So when we approach our work as service,
- 15:43as service to God, service to others, when
- 15:44we're asking that question, how can I help?
- 15:47When we're decoding that meeting of how our
- 15:48work helps other people and taking advantages of
- 15:50opportunities and doing it from that motivation of
- 15:53service and love, that is when God is
- 15:56able to energize us and make us into
- 15:59the people he intends us to be.
- 16:01He's using our work to shape us and
- 16:03to serve others in the world.
- 16:05He's filling us with that electricity, with that
- 16:07life, so that we can work out our
- 16:10salvation with fear and trembling.
- 16:13So that's what it means to work out
- 16:14your salvation.
- 16:15It's not to earn God's favor, but to
- 16:17collaborate with God in the way that he
- 16:19is continuing to save you over time.
- 16:22Because what does the word salvation mean?
- 16:24It means deliverance.
- 16:25It means rescue.
- 16:27God rescues us from a life of sin.
- 16:30He rescues us from a life of meaninglessness.
- 16:33By giving us more meaning in our lives,
- 16:36by opening up a way for us as
- 16:38he empowers us to do meaningful work, God
- 16:40is in the present rescuing us, bringing us
- 16:43into his kind of eternal life.
- 16:47Lord Jesus, thank you that you rescue us.
- 16:52Thank you that you intend to make us
- 16:54fully alive in our workplaces as much as
- 16:57anywhere else.
- 16:58So show us how to do our work
- 17:01out of service.
- 17:02Show us how to ask that question, how
- 17:04can I help?
- 17:05Help us to decode and to contribute to
- 17:08the meaning that you're giving us as we
- 17:10contribute to the common good, as we image
- 17:13you, and as we do the stuff of
- 17:16salvation.
- 17:17Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 17:19do our work with you.
- 17:25Thanks for listening.
