- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
- 0:05Speaker 1: he said, It is finished. And he bowed his head
- 0:10Speaker 1: and gave up the ghost. John 19.30 Thank you, Jesus,
- 0:17Speaker 1: for carrying your cross up the hill. When my moment comes,
- 0:22Speaker 1: I will be like Simon, and I will take the
- 0:25Speaker 1: weight of your cross upon my life until I complete
- 0:29Speaker 1: my mission here on earth. reflecting on the most holy
- 0:33Speaker 1: of moments. Like Jesus, I give my life to you, God,
- 0:38Speaker 1: as a living sacrifice. May you use my life to
- 0:43Speaker 1: bring your name glory as long as I am breathing.
- 0:49Speaker 1: In the same way that Jesus brought hope to the
- 0:51Speaker 1: thief on the cross in the midst of his pain,
- 0:55Speaker 1: so too will I bring hope to others, even when
- 0:59Speaker 1: I feel the burden of life's challenges. I will remember
- 1:04Speaker 1: that the greatest act of devotion to you, God, is
- 1:07Speaker 1: to bring people into the knowledge of your saving grace
- 1:11Speaker 1: and forgiveness. Through your death and burial, Jesus, you put
- 1:17Speaker 1: into action the greatest chess play in all the cosmos.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Through your death and burial, you have given us the
- 1:25Speaker 1: ultimate checkmate over Satan and his plans. The best is
- 1:31Speaker 1: yet to come. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for
- 1:39Speaker 1: praying with us today. Continue your time with God by

- 1:56Speaker 2: Jesus' Death and Burial In our last story, Jesus was
- 2:01Speaker 2: taken before Pilate and brutally beaten. The crowd demanded Jesus
- 2:06Speaker 2: be crucified. Pilate, who knew Jesus was innocent, washed his
- 2:11Speaker 2: hands clean and released Jesus to be crucified. In this story,
- 2:15Speaker 2: we will learn about the death and burial of Jesus
- 2:19Speaker 2: as inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible

- 2:56Speaker 3: slash stress. In our previous episode, we heard how Jesus
- 3:00Speaker 3: went before Pilate, the Roman ruler, and though no fault
- 3:03Speaker 3: was found in him, the religious leaders clamored for his death,
- 3:08Speaker 3: insisting that Pilate send him to the cross and release
- 3:11Speaker 3: a criminal named Barabbas. Jesus was beaten, humiliated, mocked, tortured,
- 3:17Speaker 3: yet he remained silent, willing to fulfill God's purpose for
- 3:21Speaker 3: his life. Today we'll hear as Jesus goes to the
- 3:25Speaker 3: cross and the final words that he says as the
- 3:27Speaker 3: sin of the world bears its full weight on his shoulders.
- 3:31Speaker 3: So let's listen now to the reading of God's word.
- 3:36Speaker 2: The day grew dim and clouds began filling the skies.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Jesus was given a cross to carry up the trail
- 3:43Speaker 2: of Calvary. A hundred pound piece of wood carving a
- 3:47Speaker 2: deeper hole into his already exposed back. Jesus carried his
- 3:52Speaker 2: cross up the hill towards the place he would die.
- 3:55Speaker 2: After losing blood and oxygen, Jesus collapsed to the ground
- 3:59Speaker 2: with the cross. Unable to carry it himself, a soldier
- 4:03Speaker 2: took a man named Simon from the crowd and had
- 4:06Speaker 2: him carry Christ's cross for him up the hill. Some
- 4:10Speaker 2: cried for his death. Others cried to not have him die.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Thousands of people followed Jesus up that hill to watch
- 4:17Speaker 2: him be crucified. Many mourned for him that day. Yet
- 4:22Speaker 2: underneath the blood and sweat, Jesus walked with joy towards
- 4:25Speaker 2: the cross, knowing what it would accomplish. Legs trembling, blood dripping,
- 4:31Speaker 2: and lungs gasping for air, Jesus made his way to
- 4:34Speaker 2: the place of the skull where he would be crucified.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Soldiers grabbed him and laid him down onto the cross.
- 4:42Speaker 2: One by one they hammered nails into his wrists and feet.
- 4:46Speaker 2: and raised the cross up high for everyone to behold
- 4:49Speaker 2: his suffering. Crucifixion was designed to be a slow and
- 4:53Speaker 2: painful death. For hours men would gasp for air by
- 4:57Speaker 2: pulling up on their feet and wrists that had nails
- 5:00Speaker 2: driven through them. Slowly, Jesus began to breathe and look
- 5:04Speaker 2: upon the crowd, and the people stood by watching. But
- 5:09Speaker 2: the rulers scoffed at him, saying, He saved others, let
- 5:13Speaker 2: him save himself if he is truly Christ. The soldiers
- 5:18Speaker 2: also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine
- 5:21Speaker 2: and saying, If you are the king of the Jews,
- 5:24Speaker 2: save yourself. Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them. They do not
- 5:32Speaker 2: know what they are doing. The soldiers took his clothes
- 5:36Speaker 2: and divided it up between them by casting lots, which
- 5:39Speaker 2: fulfilled the prophecy that said that they would do so.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Pilate had a sign made in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek,
- 5:50Speaker 2: so that all the people can read it walking by,
- 5:52Speaker 2: which says, Jesus, the King of Jews. This disturbed the Jews,
- 5:57Speaker 2: yet Pilate would not remove it. Jesus' cross was placed
- 6:02Speaker 2: beside two thieves. One mocked Jesus, saying, Are you not
- 6:07Speaker 2: the Christ? Save yourself and us if you are so powerful.
- 6:12Speaker 2: But the other thief swiftly rebuked him, saying, Have you
- 6:15Speaker 2: no fear of God? We are getting what we deserve
- 6:18Speaker 2: hanging here, yet this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, please,
- 6:23Speaker 2: remember me when you enter into your kingdom. Jesus answered
- 6:27Speaker 2: and said to him, Truly, today you will be with
- 6:31Speaker 2: me in paradise. Jesus then looked down toward his mother,
- 6:38Speaker 2: who was sobbing inconsolably. Jesus, in one of his final acts,
- 6:43Speaker 2: turned to John, one of his most beloved disciples, and said, Son,
- 6:48Speaker 2: behold your mother. And he charged John to look after
- 6:52Speaker 2: his mother. Darkness had now enveloped the skies completely, as
- 6:57Speaker 2: if preparing for what was about to occur. Nine hours
- 7:01Speaker 2: had passed on the cross, and Jesus looked up to heaven. Eloi! Eloi!
- 7:08Speaker 2: Lema sabachthani! He cried, which means, My God! My God,
- 7:14Speaker 2: why have you forsaken me? For in that moment the
- 7:17Speaker 2: eternal bond between the Father and the Son was severed,
- 7:20Speaker 2: and the sins of all mankind were thrust onto Jesus
- 7:24Speaker 2: as a tsunami does to the shore. Then Jesus yelled
- 7:28Speaker 2: out one more time, Father, I give you my life.
- 7:33Speaker 2: It is now finished. Then he gave his spirit to
- 7:38Speaker 2: the Lord, the one who with a word spoke light
- 7:41Speaker 2: and life into existence forever. spoke his final word. The
- 7:46Speaker 2: same lungs that breathed life into mankind in the Garden
- 7:49Speaker 2: of Eden exhaled their final breath. Immediately, the curtain that
- 7:55Speaker 2: hung in the temple was torn in half, symbolizing the
- 7:58Speaker 2: tearing of Jesus' flesh, removing separation from man and God forever.
- 8:04Speaker 2: The ground began to shake and the skies poured forth rain.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Rocks were split in half and for a moment the
- 8:10Speaker 2: dead walked among the earth in darkness. The earth itself
- 8:14Speaker 2: was mourning the death of its creator. A Roman commander
- 8:19Speaker 2: saw these things happen and gasped in awe. Truly, this
- 8:24Speaker 2: man was the Son of God, he said. After the
- 8:27Speaker 2: chaos had passed, they brought Jesus down from the cross.
- 8:32Speaker 2: The Jewish leaders did not want the bodies to be
- 8:34Speaker 2: left up during the Sabbath, so they asked Pilate to
- 8:38Speaker 2: let the bodies be taken down. They took the criminals down,
- 8:42Speaker 2: broke their legs, and then moved on to Jesus. It
- 8:45Speaker 2: was obvious that he was dead. So they instead pierced
- 8:49Speaker 2: him with a spear, and blood and water came out
- 8:52Speaker 2: of his body. This fulfilled the scripture that Jesus' bones
- 8:56Speaker 2: would not be broken. And another scripture states that his
- 8:59Speaker 2: body will be pierced. Joseph, a wealthy follower of Jesus,
- 9:05Speaker 2: asked Pilate for his body. He feared the Jewish leaders,
- 9:09Speaker 2: so when Pilate agreed, he took the body quickly. Nicodemus
- 9:13Speaker 2: brought myrrh and aloes, and they both wrapped his body
- 9:16Speaker 2: with these elements and linen. They then placed Jesus in
- 9:20Speaker 2: a new tomb that no one had ever been in
- 9:22Speaker 2: near a garden. This was the day of preparation, and
- 9:26Speaker 2: because the tomb was close, they placed Jesus there. In
- 9:31Speaker 2: the darkness of the tomb, the Son of Man laid
- 9:33Speaker 2: his head. His followers, the city, and the whole earth
- 9:38Speaker 2: were in mourning. Sadness gripped the hearts of all who
- 9:42Speaker 2: loved him. and grief overcame them for a short while.
- 9:46Speaker 2: There was no knowledge of what was yet to come.
- 9:53Speaker 3: In today's reading, Jesus is walking the way of the cross.
- 9:58Speaker 3: It's known now as the Via Dolorosa. With the beam
- 10:01Speaker 3: of the cross on which he was to die weighing
- 10:04Speaker 3: heavily on his shoulders, Jesus walked towards Calvary. His body
- 10:08Speaker 3: was already beaten and bloodied and now he was forced
- 10:11Speaker 3: to carry the symbol of guilt and shame through the
- 10:13Speaker 3: city with people yelling and screaming and spitting at him. Finally,
- 10:18Speaker 3: the Lord collapses under the weight of the cross and
- 10:21Speaker 3: a man named Simon was pulled from the crowd and
- 10:23Speaker 3: and made to carry the wooden beam the rest of
- 10:25Speaker 3: the way. Jesus knew what awaited him when he arrived
- 10:29Speaker 3: at the place called Golgotha, the place of the skull.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Death would not come quickly or without pain. A crucifixion
- 10:37Speaker 3: could last for hours, even days. His body would endure
- 10:41Speaker 3: indescribable pain, but that would pale in comparison to the
- 10:45Speaker 3: spiritual pain that he experienced on the cross. And yet
- 10:50Speaker 3: Jesus continued step by step to accomplish God's plan of
- 10:55Speaker 3: salvation for the world. He came to die, to rise again,
- 11:00Speaker 3: that we might have eternal life. When he finally arrived
- 11:04Speaker 3: at the hill called Calvary, Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God,
- 11:08Speaker 3: was laid on the cross, arms open wide, and nailed
- 11:11Speaker 3: down by his wrists and feet. The soldiers were experts
- 11:15Speaker 3: in keeping people alive to expose them to the maximum
- 11:19Speaker 3: amount of suffering. This was all described as a deterrent
- 11:23Speaker 3: for other criminals. As Jesus was raised above the crowd,
- 11:27Speaker 3: his weight hung on the nails, his flayed back rubbed
- 11:30Speaker 3: against the rough-hewn wood of the cross, and he struggled
- 11:34Speaker 3: even to lift himself to take the next breath. The
- 11:38Speaker 3: way a person died on a Roman cross was by suffocation,
- 11:42Speaker 3: drowning in one's own fluids. Raised up above the crowds,
- 11:47Speaker 3: Jesus watched as the people mocked him even more, telling
- 11:50Speaker 3: him to draw upon the powers of God and to
- 11:52Speaker 3: save himself The soldiers joined in the insults, showing no
- 11:56Speaker 3: regard for his suffering. This was cruel beyond imagination. And yet,
- 12:01Speaker 3: as he looked on those who put him there, the
- 12:03Speaker 3: Roman soldiers, the crowds of people, even the religious leaders
- 12:07Speaker 3: who conspired to have him killed, his heart was not
- 12:10Speaker 3: filled with anger or rage or hate, but indescribable and
- 12:15Speaker 3: intense love and forgiveness. He prays, asking God to forgive them,
- 12:20Speaker 3: for they did not know what they were doing. This
- 12:24Speaker 3: was the end of the long road Jesus had walked,
- 12:26Speaker 3: the culmination of his earthly purpose. He had known all
- 12:30Speaker 3: along that many who once flocked to see him would
- 12:32Speaker 3: turn away and that he would face death alone. Even
- 12:37Speaker 3: his disciples would leave him. Still, he went there willingly
- 12:41Speaker 3: to die for you and me. We heard how there
- 12:45Speaker 3: were two men next to him, two convicted thieves, criminals
- 12:49Speaker 3: who were not innocent. They were receiving their due penalty.
- 12:54Speaker 3: One joined the mockers, failing to see Jesus for who
- 12:56Speaker 3: he truly was. But one of the thieves, one of
- 12:59Speaker 3: the men, surrendered his life to Jesus, asking him to
- 13:03Speaker 3: remember him when he entered his kingdom. This man had
- 13:06Speaker 3: no time left. No works could earn him God's favor
- 13:10Speaker 3: or salvation. There was no church to join. There was
- 13:14Speaker 3: no religious rites to perform. He was moments away from death,
- 13:18Speaker 3: hopeless and helpless. And yet, because he turned to Jesus
- 13:22Speaker 3: by faith, He heard Jesus reassured him of his eternal
- 13:26Speaker 3: hope and home in heaven. Today, you will be with
- 13:29Speaker 3: me in paradise. What happened to this thief on the
- 13:32Speaker 3: cross reminds us that it's never too late for a
- 13:35Speaker 3: new beginning and that there is nothing we can do
- 13:40Speaker 3: to earn or deserve our salvation, but to put our
- 13:43Speaker 3: lives in the nail-scarred hands of Jesus, that he and
- 13:47Speaker 3: he alone can pardon us from our sins. Even in
- 13:51Speaker 3: his moments of pain and suffering, Jesus, the glorious Savior,
- 13:56Speaker 3: the good shepherd, continued to look upon those that he loved.
- 14:00Speaker 3: He charged his disciple John with the care of Mary,
- 14:03Speaker 3: his mother. As darkness descended on the land, Jesus knew
- 14:07Speaker 3: there was still an even greater pain to face. The
- 14:10Speaker 3: Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins
- 14:12Speaker 3: of the world, felt the full weight of our sin
- 14:15Speaker 3: on his back. And in that moment, he who knew
- 14:18Speaker 3: no sin according to the Bible, became sin for us,
- 14:23Speaker 3: that we might be made the righteousness of God. Every
- 14:28Speaker 3: wrong thought, every action, impulse, desire, sinful desire of every
- 14:32Speaker 3: man and woman who has ever lived and who will
- 14:35Speaker 3: ever live was poured on Jesus that day as he
- 14:39Speaker 3: hung upon the cross. His fellowship, perfect fellowship with the
- 14:43Speaker 3: Father was broken in that moment, And he cried out
- 14:46Speaker 3: these words that we find in Mark 15, verse 34.
- 14:50Speaker 3: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? He
- 14:54Speaker 3: was speaking the words of Psalm 22. And even in
- 14:57Speaker 3: those words, as Christ acknowledged God's holiness, he was professing
- 15:01Speaker 3: his trust in his heavenly father. Finally, Jesus gave up
- 15:05Speaker 3: his spirit and breathed his last breath. It was finally finished.
- 15:09Speaker 3: He cried out, it is finished, which means accomplished, paid
- 15:13Speaker 3: in full. Tetelestai. is the word in the language of
- 15:17Speaker 3: the Bible. Christ paid in full the debt of sin
- 15:21Speaker 3: that we owed so that we could have eternal life.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Our debt was paid in full. Jesus paid it all.
- 15:30Speaker 3: At that moment, the curtain in the temple, a symbol
- 15:32Speaker 3: of the separation between man and God, was torn from
- 15:35Speaker 3: top to bottom. God himself had removed the great chasm,
- 15:39Speaker 3: the barrier between himself and those created for himself. It
- 15:44Speaker 3: was in that moment that Christ had come. It was
- 15:47Speaker 3: for this moment, this miracle, that Christ had come, and
- 15:51Speaker 3: now his purpose is fulfilled. The plan of salvation is complete.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Satan is defeated, and salvation is now offered to all
- 16:01Speaker 3: who believe and trust in Christ. As Jesus' body was
- 16:04Speaker 3: laid to rest by the few that had remained to
- 16:07Speaker 3: care for him, there was one great enemy yet to
- 16:10Speaker 3: be defeated, and that is death. He would conquer death.
- 16:15Speaker 3: There is grave sadness on that dark Friday and on
- 16:18Speaker 3: that silent Saturday, but a joyous day was coming soon.
- 16:23Speaker 3: A resurrection is promised. Dear God, we can never get
- 16:27Speaker 3: over your love for us and what you endured for
- 16:31Speaker 3: us that we might have your love and grace, salvation,
- 16:35Speaker 3: and eternal life. We will praise you forever, dear Lamb
- 16:38Speaker 3: of God, for all that you have done for us
- 16:40Speaker 3: and continue to do for us. We remember that it
- 16:44Speaker 3: is by your blood that we have redemption, salvation, and
- 16:49Speaker 3: eternal life. So we trust in you. And just let
- 16:53Speaker 3: me say to all who are listening right now, if
- 16:56Speaker 3: there's never been a moment in your life when you
- 16:59Speaker 3: have invited Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, this
- 17:03Speaker 3: is your moment. This can be your miracle. He died
- 17:06Speaker 3: for you. He rose again. The Bible says, believe on
- 17:10Speaker 3: the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. which
- 17:13Speaker 3: means that all your sins are forgiven, past, present, and future,
- 17:17Speaker 3: that Christ is alive in you and that you have
- 17:20Speaker 3: the hope of eternal life now and forever, that you
- 17:23Speaker 3: will be with him in heaven when he comes for you.
- 17:26Speaker 3: So place your faith and trust in Jesus now by
- 17:29Speaker 3: receiving him, repenting of your sin, turning to him and
- 17:33Speaker 3: trusting in him as your Lord and Savior. God bless you.
