Latest / Film Curious / Project Hail Mary Review - Are Major Blockbusters Back & Is Ryan Gosling Always at the Center?
Transcript
- 0:00This is a movie that could have worked with him, too.
- 0:02He’s great.
- 0:03Why am I blanking on his name, Jesus.
- 0:05Channing Tatum?
- 0:06Yeah, I could see Channing Tatum in this movie, actually.
- 0:09Really easily.
- 0:10I don't think I would enjoy it nearly as much.
- 0:12I'll be honest, I don't know.
- 0:13It'd still be fun.
- 0:15Yeah, I think it actually...
- 0:16I don’t know about the emotional punches.
- 0:18Funnier, I think.
- 0:19Yeah, yeah, it would be a straight up comedy.
- 0:36Hello all you film lovers, casual theater goers,
- 0:39at home movie watchers and streaming scrollers out there!
- 0:43You're listening to Film Curious, the podcast that invites you
- 0:46to let your intrigue guide you and explore great films across genres and time.
- 0:50At least that's what I'll be doing.
- 0:52I'm Ashley Bernhardt, and this episode I'm joined by my good friend
- 0:55Pete Tedone to dive into a fairly new release.
- 0:57You may have heard of it. Project Hail Mary.
- 1:00This heart pounding and heartwarming film may be Amazon MGM Studios most ambitious
- 1:05project yet, being its first major blockbuster
- 1:09with a budget of $248 million.
- 1:12Its story is based on another book by the same guy who wrote The Martian,
- 1:15Andy Weir, as well as the same screenwriter, Drew Goddard.
- 1:19It's directed by the duo brought you the beloved Sony
- 1:21animated Spider-Verse movies Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
- 1:25The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Huller, follows a scientist
- 1:29who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no recollection of how he got there.
- 1:33As his memory returns, he uncovers a mission
- 1:35to stop a mysterious substance from killing Earth's sun,
- 1:39and an unexpected friendship
- 1:41may be the key to saving the planet from an eternal ice age.
- 1:45So join us as we explore the film Project Hail Mary.
- 1:49I'd like to introduce my good friend, cousin through marriage, and one of the
- 1:53most knowledgeable and insightful people I personally know when it comes to film.
- 1:58If he will be so kind to me, he will hopefully be on this show often.
- 2:02You'll see him pop up from time to time.
- 2:04I have Pete Tedone here.
- 2:08Pete will probably not plug himself, so I will.
- 2:11If he will allow me to compliment, compliment
- 2:16him. He is an immensely talented photographer.
- 2:20I think he has some of the best eye for composition.
- 2:22I've seen.
- 2:24And he claims it's easy.
- 2:25And I have words for you.
- 2:27No, sir. It is not.
- 2:28It's not easy.
- 2:30You are very good at it.
- 2:33I when I see your, short films, they are incredible.
- 2:37So when he has the opportunity.
- 2:39To be a filmmaker, it's an incredible, podcaster.
- 2:43So he. Hosts a delightfully entertaining.
- 2:46Theme park podcast. But yet he is still broken.
- 2:48So go out there.
- 2:50I think if you're not following his work, look him up. He.
- 2:54It's definitely worth your time with all that said.
- 2:59You're welcome. With all that said.
- 3:01Pete. Hi.
- 3:02How's the morning treating you?
- 3:05And anything you like to say to the folks out there.
- 3:09About yourself or correct any.
- 3:11Inaccuracies that I may have?
- 3:14I did nothing to say about myself.
- 3:17No, you were not on the, Yeah. No.
- 3:20Nothing to say on that end, but thank you.
- 3:22Yeah. I'm excited to be here.
- 3:24I'm happy you finally, you know, that you're doing this and that.
- 3:27I'm here to to chat with you about a couple of things today, and.
- 3:31Yeah, let's get to it.
- 3:33Yeah.
- 3:34So we're going to be doing Project Hail Mary, and that will be what we start with.
- 3:40I mean, we'll just be honest with you behind the scenes sort of thing.
- 3:42We're probably we're recording project Hail Mary and the drama.
- 3:47At the same time.
- 3:48So, they'll most likely be separated,
- 3:51episode wise, but, they might leak.
- 3:54Into each other if you've noticed that. So just.
- 3:57Listen to both episodes. Watch both episodes.
- 3:59I feel like we're getting back on track, where every year
- 4:02there is a pretty big summer blockbuster movie,
- 4:08and it
- 4:09it's feeling more and more, common again, which is nice because there was,
- 4:15you know, the everything with Covid
- 4:18and, how it affected theater going.
- 4:20You know, we're still feeling it really.
- 4:22And, it's now so I don't I couldn't tell you what it was
- 4:26last year or the year before, but it, it feels like once or twice a year
- 4:30everyone is at the movies, whether it be, you know, when it was Barb
- 4:33being Oppenheimer or something.
- 4:35And apparently Gosling could be at the center of a lot of this.
- 4:38It's it's it's just starting to feel like more common for everyone.
- 4:44Went to go see this movie again,
- 4:46not as common as it used to be, like in the,
- 4:48you know, the heydays of like summer movies in the 90s and stuff like that.
- 4:52But it it feels like it's coming back a little bit.
- 4:54So, it's cool, it's good.
- 4:57You know?
- 4:57Yeah.
- 4:57I watched, it had a full theater.
- 5:01It was, was packed out and I think it was a Wednesday night
- 5:05when we ended up actually going to see it.
- 5:07And it was fun. The crowd. Reactions.
- 5:10And that movie definitely works for crowd reactions,
- 5:15where you're not worried if you're going to miss something or someone's going to.
- 5:20And it wasn't like they were distracting reactions.
- 5:22I've noticed that too, is like coming back to the movies
- 5:25and we've been going all through until, you know, Covid, let us we would be.
- 5:29The only people in the theater. Yeah.
- 5:32But now it seems that, movie etiquette.
- 5:35I've noticed is coming back where, like, there's not, like, side not for, you.
- 5:40Know, I mean, maybe this was like a special showing of Project
- 5:44Hail Mary that I.
- 5:45Usually, I mean, Hail Mary was fine.
- 5:47I also usually go at the most inopportune times for other people to go on purpose.
- 5:54You know, I'll go. Yeah.
- 5:55To the 1030 show on Sunday night,
- 5:58you know, which when you're talking about a movie
- 6:00that's nearly two hours and 40 minutes and you got to say 30 minutes of nonsense,
- 6:05that you have to sit through, free movie that you're talking about
- 6:08getting back home at 2 a.m. for me.
- 6:10That's if I got to wake up at seven the next day.
- 6:13Most people avoid those later shows.
- 6:15So generally that happens.
- 6:17But how it was filmed, I do remember that.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:21And yeah, I don't remember anyone really chattering about the movie.
- 6:25Doesn't give you a whole lot of moments of pause.
- 6:29No. Which is interesting for.
- 6:32A two hour movie. Yeah. 47 minute runtime.
- 6:35That it doesn't, so
- 6:39I guess, you mentioned Gosling.
- 6:41Actually, I do.
- 6:42Want to grab on that, Ryan Gosling.
- 6:45I thought it was a really great performance, actually, I think he did
- 6:48carry it.
- 6:49I mean, he has to carry a huge chunk of the movie because of his, you know,
- 6:55I guess he's one.
- 6:55Well, yeah, he you got to get into small.
- 7:00He's ugly. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:03I mean, here's, I guess spoiler warning, which I think
- 7:06at this point it's, the, the rocks out of the bag.
- 7:10But yeah, yeah, he,
- 7:13he has to interact with the rock alien for most of the film.
- 7:17He's not so. Rock. Thank goodness.
- 7:19Just Rocky.
- 7:20Yeah.
- 7:21There was a lot of.
- 7:22I'm so off track, I have.
- 7:24I had noticed there was a bunch of film.
- 7:26References and homages.
- 7:28In in Project Hail Mary.
- 7:31Yeah, yeah.
- 7:33No, no, no. I'm sorry. Go ahead.
- 7:34No. Okay. Well, I I'll.
- 7:36Finish my Ryan Gosling thought before we, we jump into that.
- 7:41Because I realize I'm off track.
- 7:42But I was thinking about it and how you mentioned like, oh,
- 7:46the last big film, you know, was a Gosling was in the film, Gosling.
- 7:51De Gosling.
- 7:52We only had Ryan.
- 7:54Yeah. And it kind of made me think that.
- 7:56I think Ryan Gosling is proving that he puts butts in seats.
- 8:01Because I think the fall guy actually performed pretty well,
- 8:04too, with Emily Blunt.
- 8:06That comedy.
- 8:08That I was actually just
- 8:09thinking of that movie, and I could not remember if it made a lot.
- 8:13I'm going to look it up right now because,
- 8:17it didn't.
- 8:20It didn't.
- 8:21It didn't do banger.
- 8:22No, not at all.
- 8:23Actually, it only approximated about 181 million
- 8:28against like a buck 40 of a million, $1 million production.
- 8:33But the thing is, the reason I remember is that the only reason that I remember
- 8:37the box office thing was people use that as like,
- 8:40oh, well, you know, he's not really, you know, a star.
- 8:43And I don't think it really has anything to do with that.
- 8:46It's like the movie was good.
- 8:49People liked it, but it didn't like
- 8:52it wasn't overly unique.
- 8:54I guess maybe to like, an audience
- 8:57who was wondering, am I going to go spend
- 9:01three and a half, you know, three hours of my day
- 9:03and a lot of money to go to the theater? You know, that
- 9:07it's just a specific
- 9:08type of movie that that'll work for that every now and then.
- 9:11And I don't know if it's just on purpose for Jesus.
- 9:14The timing of this movie coming out so close to, you know, a couple weeks
- 9:18later, we're launching out to the moon for the first time in over 30 years.
- 9:23You got to think that that might be a marketing thing.
- 9:27I was just like, can you time that was that a I because I
- 9:30really didn't know until two weeks ago that that was happening.
- 9:34This you know, this past week.
- 9:36And, so I was wondering like, oh, dude, was that on purpose?
- 9:40But yeah, I mean, it's going to get tested again
- 9:43because in two years he'll be leading Starfighter,
- 9:48new Star Wars film and
- 9:53does that matter?
- 9:54Like, does it matter who's in the lead role for that.
- 9:57In a Star Wars film?
- 9:58I don't know though. But yeah, I would.
- 10:00Does it have the no.
- 10:01One and I don't know if it's no.
- 10:03One or was it just bad receive all of solo.
- 10:08Solo was it was a tough sell for people because everyone is so stuck in.
- 10:13Well, it's gotta be Harrison Ford.
- 10:14How come you pay for it?
- 10:16And, there was, you know, the mix up,
- 10:20the changing of directors, which, ironically, was Lord Miller,
- 10:23you know, originally for the or the directors stuff for solo.
- 10:28Yeah.
- 10:28And they were then, you know, Ron Howard came in and did whatever
- 10:33the second half of that or last third of that filming took place.
- 10:37But yeah, now you're going to have, Gosling leaving one out.
- 10:40But, you know, you have you're going to be able
- 10:42to save from the director of Deadpool and Wolverine, you know,
- 10:45and stuff like that, that that will help a lot more people be like,
- 10:49I know that person, that director, and I know Ryan Gosling.
- 10:52And it'll I mean, I guess a lot of it will also depend upon
- 10:57what people react to with Mando and Grogu, that there's so many factors
- 11:02that go into whether or not someone goes to the movies that I.
- 11:06I don't think that there's
- 11:09I think it's very hard to say that there's like that Tom cruise
- 11:11factor of the 80s and 90s when like if the man was in the movie,
- 11:16most of the time, people went, it didn't matter.
- 11:19I don't know how many people exist like that anymore.
- 11:23You know, it's not Brad Pitt anymore.
- 11:24I don't think it ever really was.
- 11:27But Gosling, this is a huge,
- 11:29you know, financially, you know, for a poll, this is a huge win.
- 11:33And when you combine it with Barbie, you know, he's
- 11:36sort of got to where he could say,
- 11:39you know, in la la la la land for its,
- 11:41you know, for its budget made a shit ton of money.
- 11:46So yeah, there's a, you know, there's a lot of different factors into that. But
- 11:50yeah I guess so that.
- 11:52Yeah.
- 11:52Yeah I mean even this isn't who knows what the actual.
- 11:55I would have to look it up the,
- 11:58how. Well, the gray man did, which is, you know, it was,
- 12:02it was a streaming on Netflix or, you know,
- 12:05I didn't want to know, to be honest,
- 12:08I think a lot of people did, because it's getting a second one.
- 12:12So, I don't know.
- 12:14I don't know that streaming is, is different than a, than a box.
- 12:17Streaming is like I mean, this is like just my I don't.
- 12:20Know how they're even. Calculating.
- 12:22Jason Momoa has been in like a hundred films and they're all on streaming
- 12:27and he's in like 17 different TV shows, Apple TV shows.
- 12:31I don't know any of them.
- 12:33Can't say I've watched them.
- 12:34But I'm very happy that he's as all over the place as he could possibly be.
- 12:40Yeah, because you don't.
- 12:41The Gray man doesn't have numbers.
- 12:43Right.
- 12:43I, I did not hear great things about that.
- 12:46I don't.
- 12:47I. Particularly like the Russos,
- 12:49outside of, like, a couple of Avengers movies.
- 12:53So that just, you know, You mentioned.
- 13:00Yeah, we can drop it.
- 13:02I yeah. I'm looking at it. I'm like.
- 13:04I'm like. There's so many people in here.
- 13:06It's like a Dreamworks animated film
- 13:09where they just get every one possible to voice anything.
- 13:13Yeah.
- 13:14That's what this feels like.
- 13:16That is.
- 13:17Sidetrack aside.
- 13:18We could go on and on and on and film tangents and.
- 13:22Yeah. So back to Project Hail Mary. Yes.
- 13:25And then talking about, you know, box office numbers, production.
- 13:29It was 200 and I wrote this down and I'm going to get the number 248 million.
- 13:36And so was Amazon, MGM Studios first major,
- 13:41blockbuster that they, they put money into, like real money.
- 13:45But it also makes me a little curious.
- 13:49Because I wonder.
- 13:52I mean, I looked into, the production of it
- 13:56and the set design and, a lot of it is analog.
- 13:59Rocky is house. Puppetry house. Yeah.
- 14:02I guess an even half is like, puppetry, an animatronic they used at times.
- 14:08And then they've got the CGI aspect of him, too.
- 14:11So, I mean, yeah, he's, he has a huge rig.
- 14:15The, the puppeteering is, the same guy
- 14:18who voices him who is, James or he's.
- 14:22Yeah.
- 14:24So I mean, yeah, I guess you
- 14:25have that huge and the set is all like analog.
- 14:29Greg, why am I blanking on here?
- 14:33Greg Frazier, the cinematographer was very adamant about he needed that cockpit
- 14:40that they made to be easily
- 14:44taken apart so that he could film from every angle.
- 14:47Yeah. And get the shot that he wanted.
- 14:49So that was, I'll put that in the show notes is a really interesting video
- 14:53that, they did was like, is it Adam?
- 14:56Is it Savage? Who's the guy.
- 14:58Who does the like, debunks the,
- 15:01oh, theories or, Adam Savage?
- 15:05Yeah, I follow him on YouTube.
- 15:06I like that aspect of it.
- 15:08Oh, I have the link I'll put.
- 15:10In the show notes, but it's a very interesting.
- 15:11He was talking to, the set designer and everything.
- 15:15Yeah, it's it's Adam Savage, all right.
- 15:17So it's it was intense what they had to do.
- 15:20And like, every, every button could light up with a different LED.
- 15:24It was impressive.
- 15:26So thinking about it, I go, okay. Yeah.
- 15:29I mean, I guess that requires a pretty huge budget
- 15:32in addition to all of the CGI space scenes.
- 15:35That they then have to do. Yeah.
- 15:37So there's that. But then.
- 15:39I look up, you know, Dune, In comparison
- 15:43and they made Dune for 190.
- 15:46Million.
- 15:47So the difference in, in the production
- 15:51kind of, is curious to me.
- 15:55Yeah.
- 15:55I mean, it's sometimes I think no matter what, it's always expensive.
- 15:59I think that there's a lot more rigging
- 16:04and studio work and more hands on.
- 16:07I don't know, maybe it's something like that.
- 16:10You know, the crazy part of it,
- 16:12as a viewer, I don't give us, like, okay, like for it.
- 16:16Was it good?
- 16:17You know, it's good. Yeah.
- 16:19It's it's never like Dune looks great.
- 16:21I know people there.
- 16:23You get some people now like,
- 16:24oh the Brown movie gets takes place that goddamn desert.
- 16:28It's Yeah.
- 16:29That's it's there's this, there's.
- 16:31This like over compensation on some, some commentaries
- 16:35nowadays where it's like, oh, movies aren't colorful.
- 16:39I, there's no country for old men.
- 16:41It doesn't need to be like.
- 16:43It has to be what that film needs to look like.
- 16:46So I never really understood that that whole thing that people have,
- 16:51obsessively about that.
- 16:52But, yeah, it's it's, hand making stuff
- 16:56is expensive, you know, it's expensive doing CGI.
- 17:00And there are aspects of Dune you could not build
- 17:04and maybe nowadays or, you know, you could,
- 17:07but it would be a lot of model work and it wouldn't look the same.
- 17:10And all this other stuff, and it would probably be maybe
- 17:13at the end of the day, more expensive because of the time I did
- 17:16and the amount of if something breaks, you have to rebuild this
- 17:21entire model or, you know, rebuild this entire contraption.
- 17:24And even Dune uses, you know, a lot of models and stuff,
- 17:28or they just build, you know, the, the copter thing.
- 17:32Yeah.
- 17:33But yeah, movies are expensive.
- 17:35It's a nightmare.
- 17:36Absolute nightmare.
- 17:38But, you know, it's when.
- 17:39You see it work, you know, this is making money.
- 17:42You're like, oh, thank God.
- 17:44And then you look into how they did it and you're like, it was mainly manual.
- 17:49It was people actually making these things, designing these things.
- 17:54Shooting it with the actor, being able to interact
- 17:58with the thing that you think is that's always got to be helpful.
- 18:03Yeah.
- 18:03There's there's a kind of heartbreaking clip, of Ian McKellen.
- 18:09And I'll put in big quotes on set for, The Hobbit,
- 18:14where he is acting alone
- 18:17at a table where they're supposed to be, you know, Bilbo
- 18:20and all the dwarves, and he gets he,
- 18:25like, has a bit of an emotional breakdown because he's depressed.
- 18:28Because he was.
- 18:29He says he's like, this is not what I do.
- 18:32It's like, I, I, I like performing with people.
- 18:35And he's, you know, literally on a green screen
- 18:39table and everything by himself.
- 18:42So, yeah, I mean, it's, it's it can mean everything for the performer,
- 18:47you know, to actually be able to, to bounce
- 18:50off of people and in live time and seeing, you know, for Gosling's
- 18:55character, Grace, to see Rocky and react to him in real time.
- 19:00If, you know, Ortiz decides to do something with the movements of that
- 19:04puppet in the moment, like an actual actor would get to do on the moment,
- 19:09the set, you know, it's a it's got to be just night
- 19:13and day, for, for dealing with it, for, for some people.
- 19:17Yeah.
- 19:18Well, yeah, I'm
- 19:18hoping it's the movies are going kind of back the other way where we.
- 19:23Everything was CGI for a little bit, and now it's like, no, we need we need both.
- 19:27And you know, it's now it's a, an added value doing the, the CGI to it.
- 19:33But we'll see what happens.
- 19:35I mean, you. Can't really give.
- 19:37Yeah Hollywood a whole lot.
- 19:39I also I don't think that either one of them is a guarantee for anything.
- 19:43I, I don't think really ultimately it matters because
- 19:48just playing movies that are very CG,
- 19:51you know, reliant and they don't or they and they make a shitload of money.
- 19:55I mean, avatar is extremely CGI, and it's still,
- 19:59without anyone kind of noticing.
- 20:01Makes $1 billion every time another one comes out, which is wild.
- 20:06But that that is what happens.
- 20:07And then, you know, smaller crafted movies sometimes how hard it sells
- 20:11to people because they want this, you know,
- 20:14the see, one of the the greatest things that Project Hail Mary have for it
- 20:18in promoting it was it's very attractive visually.
- 20:23You know, there's there's a lot of scenes where you can point and go like,
- 20:25that's a hell of a poster. That's a hell of a poster.
- 20:28You know, there's a lot of stuff like that.
- 20:29Remember gravity, you know, had that a lot less flashy visually,
- 20:34but it had this image that was able to
- 20:37you knew you knew what that movie was going to be like.
- 20:42You know, you were going to see gravity because space is scary shit,
- 20:46and you're going to see Hail Mary because it was this,
- 20:50oh, I remember The Martian.
- 20:52That was fun. This seems like that.
- 20:54And Ryan Gosling looks like he's having a great time and,
- 20:58you know, space adventure and it's fun.
- 21:00And like, it's a lot of good hooks to get into people.
- 21:04It's every Andy Weir has that.
- 21:06You need two for two.
- 21:07You know, between The Martian and this, I you know, I can't
- 21:11it's incredible.
- 21:12Like how similar and how different both of those films are.
- 21:18Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:19You know, I mean they kind of it's you know, how safdies,
- 21:24you know, now, now that they've separated also
- 21:28one of the big critiques of, you know, I hear, you know, on Mardi Supreme
- 21:31and I agree with it, is it's another frantic white guy
- 21:36who's a piece of shit that we maybe root for at the end and maybe don't.
- 21:41And you could look at this as, like, Lost Man in space,
- 21:44and it's by the same writer and all that, and it has.
- 21:48And by the way, he's charming as hell and very funny.
- 21:52And it has a lot of the same elements,
- 21:56but that is kind of where it ends, you know, the,
- 22:00the whole actions within the film are very different.
- 22:04And I think that actually Lord
- 22:05Miller were aware of that, and I had never read the book.
- 22:08So actually, I wonder if it's in the book like that.
- 22:10But the way that the movie is presented to you,
- 22:14where you're jumping back and forth in time,
- 22:18it was not.
- 22:19That's something The Martian doesn't do, you know?
- 22:21So right off the bat, you're out there, you're in space.
- 22:23You starting off right, you know, right off the bat
- 22:26figuring out what's going on.
- 22:28You don't know what's going on.
- 22:29So it was a good way of separating those two things.
- 22:32So it didn't feel overly familiar to a viewer possibly.
- 22:35You know, The Martian. So.
- 22:36So how old is The Martian at this point?
- 22:39Does anyone, you know really remember 2015, 2015?
- 22:43So, you know, 11 years ago.
- 22:44So that's crazy to say. Yeah.
- 22:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:49So I guess to,
- 22:51I mean, like
- 22:52we can on so many different tangent, but I'll touch on the image thing.
- 22:57I noticed that you noticed actually, I had noticed it in theaters,
- 23:01but I didn't want to, like, interrupt and do anything loud.
- 23:07And I was like, oh, you know, my my spouse.
- 23:10Will realize it.
- 23:11I'm sure he'll realize it.
- 23:12And he.
- 23:15When he's first, communicating with Rocky, it's through, like the music.
- 23:21It's like a musicality, almost language, sound language.
- 23:24And it's it's the close encounters.
- 23:26Of the the third kind.
- 23:28When they interact with the aliens, it's the.
- 23:32Same.
- 23:33Yeah, yeah.
- 23:34So there's that.
- 23:35And then obviously Rocky himself.
- 23:37Is a film reference and.
- 23:40Rocky's made his name's Adrian.
- 23:42And so I mean they're fun.
- 23:45It's fun things.
- 23:48Yeah I was fine usually, you know.
- 23:50Hey do you remember this movie stuff?
- 23:52It's not something I'm a big fan of, but it's sit this one.
- 23:56And the bigger thing for me was the Close Encounters
- 24:01nod is a
- 24:06you can look at it as an early reveal for where that movie's going to go.
- 24:09In the end.
- 24:11Because, I mean, can we can we talk about it's okay.
- 24:16Right. But everyone a movie by now, right?
- 24:18And also we're I think I.
- 24:20Get it the, the spoiler tag and I'll make sure that it's, it's there.
- 24:24So you know spoilers also for Close Encounters,
- 24:27which is, you know, over 45 years old, almost 50 years old.
- 24:31Yeah.
- 24:33Healy, you know, Dreyfuss in that film,
- 24:35Liza's family, you don't think about it at the time.
- 24:39Right?
- 24:40But Richard Dreyfuss, after kissing another woman,
- 24:44like, leaves his wife and kids to go live with the aliens for.
- 24:49We don't know if he ever comes back or anything like that.
- 24:52We have no idea.
- 24:53And in this crossing,
- 24:56Binks, that same choice where he does not come back to Earth,
- 25:00he could.
- 25:01I mean, he could, but he is.
- 25:02I mean, the idea is he's also doing it to save,
- 25:06Rocky.
- 25:08But yeah, they they wound up actually making the same choice also.
- 25:12Yeah.
- 25:13So I think while it's a nod, it was it's
- 25:16also a little bit of a tip of the hat for if,
- 25:20if you pay attention enough, you're like, oh, these guys are true.
- 25:23They have the same finish.
- 25:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:27I didn't think about you know what?
- 25:28You don't even think about that in Close Encounters.
- 25:30Like, yeah, he just leaves. Oh, no.
- 25:32I mean, his whole his whole life is miserable, right?
- 25:36But, you know.
- 25:39I'm not saying, like, abandon
- 25:40your children, but.
- 25:43I don't see any reason for him to stick around either.
- 25:46He in that thing, that's always something that Spielberg says.
- 25:50If I would have made that movie as an older person,
- 25:54I don't know if I make the same movie
- 25:56because I would have been a lot more conscious of that decision.
- 25:59And I don't know if I would have agreed with it at the time.
- 26:03But for that character in that time, yeah, he's going
- 26:08right.
- 26:10And, and so does Gosling.
- 26:12And what's also funny is I remember when you, one of the big things about
- 26:17when they wanted to do, you know, Spielberg wanted to go back
- 26:19and touch up some scenes after the film was that was a success there.
- 26:23Like the production company was like, all right, the studio was like, all right,
- 26:26but you got to show us the inside of the ship.
- 26:29And for Spielberg, it was like you.
- 26:31That gives the whole goddamn ending out, because instead of wondering
- 26:35and having that mystery about what it is, I'm going to show you,
- 26:38and in front of a camera, you do, right?
- 26:43You see the planet that that Gosling is on,
- 26:47but you don't because he's living in a simulation of that.
- 26:50So it's a real fun way of swerving around that and
- 26:55and not getting into that, that issue of showing too much, you know.
- 27:01Yeah, I think the that actually.
- 27:03Was one of the.
- 27:05The sticking points for me that I'm like, maybe it is, it explains it in the novel.
- 27:09Maybe there's, deeper character development of of grace.
- 27:15I know that he's.
- 27:17You know.
- 27:18It's we have an ex-girlfriend that he's not with anymore.
- 27:21He doesn't have friends or family. Is like the line.
- 27:24It's kind of almost like a throwaway line of like, you don't mean anything,
- 27:28and then we're supposed to.
- 27:30Okay, then make the the jump. That
- 27:33he wants.
- 27:34No human. Connection. Ever.
- 27:37And, you know, is is not going to come back to Earth
- 27:41after you couldn't get him to leave Earth.
- 27:44Not that I, you know, it's there's enough storytelling
- 27:48to get us to the point of, like, okay, he had to be brave.
- 27:52Learn.
- 27:54Just like, crave for. Yeah, it's
- 27:58not. I went with that way too quickly.
- 28:02I just trust that he's going.
- 28:05Makes you be.
- 28:06Brave. Or.
- 28:10Okay.
- 28:11But, you know.
- 28:16Oh, man.
- 28:16I'm. I'm so off track.
- 28:18No. So you were saying, you know, that.
- 28:20Oh, that he would leave, right?
- 28:23Well, I mean, we we know now that he gets to a certain point where.
- 28:26His journey with Rocky kind of gives him connection and gives.
- 28:30Him a reason to, fight for something, you know, to.
- 28:35Exist, to stay.
- 28:37But I don't know if I believe that, you know, he's never.
- 28:41I mean, yes, I guess.
- 28:42At this point he woke up, however many years later, he doesn't.
- 28:45Really know what's happening back on Earth, I guess.
- 28:47Why would you go back to. A planet. That might.
- 28:49You know, it looked like at the end.
- 28:51With, with Sandra Haller that it's.
- 28:53Yeah, she's in the ice cave. Yeah.
- 28:55And something you're supposed to take it that like she's not trolling
- 28:59around the North Pole.
- 29:00She's like off the coast of in a deep freeze, you know, or something.
- 29:04Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:06Which means a lot of people have that.
- 29:07But, but the thing is, though, yes, I agree with you.
- 29:10They don't.
- 29:11They don't give me.
- 29:13I didn't feel like this is a guy who, at his
- 29:17if the opportunity arose, he was like, yeah, I'm never going to go back to Earth.
- 29:20But they did get around that because he can't really get back
- 29:25because it's it was either let you know Rocky die from essentially
- 29:30like the human equivalent of radiation poisoning and carbon
- 29:34dioxide poisoning.
- 29:37And because of that, it's just the going back and forth.
- 29:41He wouldn't physically make the trip.
- 29:43So they while they give him the choice,
- 29:48he makes the choice based out of affection and out of friendship.
- 29:53So I do think they stay skate around that as well.
- 30:00The movie does a really good job of skating around things.
- 30:03Just getting it to say it was kind of the theme, a bit of like, yeah,
- 30:07oh, happy, happy dance, dance like dude. Yeah.
- 30:09But you know,
- 30:10but right now I think, I think that's, I think that's why people reacted to it.
- 30:14So much because Jesus Christ kind of need a fucking w when you look at it
- 30:19until like just without an asterisk w
- 30:24right now, because it's just not good.
- 30:27No one's having a good time unless you're an awful person. So.
- 30:32So I think that's a big part of it.
- 30:35Like what I do, I do have a sticking point with the movies are actually.
- 30:39So, to kind of go on, you know, you had one.
- 30:42So I did have one.
- 30:44I, there was a maybe one too many of
- 30:47and then this went wrong, moments where
- 30:53it just was like, okay, all right.
- 30:54Can we can we wrap it up a little bit near it near the end?
- 30:58And one of them, though, was very odd to me because I watch this.
- 31:03This movie starts with an unconscious waking up, Gosling being force fed food
- 31:10and this and that, which was very funny, if you remember, back in the old days
- 31:13of the internet, the Ryan Gosling will eat his cereal bit
- 31:18that, do you remember that?
- 31:20I don't I'm going to. Have to look it up and I'm going.
- 31:22Okay, so there.
- 31:23Was this whole saying that there was this guy I forget
- 31:27because he passed, because he wound up getting cancer or something like that.
- 31:30There was this this cat who made a series of videos of him in front of a TV
- 31:36was a Ryan Gosling movie playing and him trying to feed him cereal.
- 31:42It sounds vaguely familiar.
- 31:43And in the scene it would always be Ryan Gosling,
- 31:46like moving his head away, like quickly or something like that.
- 31:49And it was, you know, Gosling won't eat his cereal.
- 31:52And actually, I remember after the guy passed, Gosling made a video of him
- 31:57eating a cereal, as,
- 32:00like a nod to, you know, as a, a little tribute to him.
- 32:03So anyways, we start off with that, and there's this ship
- 32:07I sort of, you know, voice that interacts with him.
- 32:10And the minute he sits down in his seat, he it's like pilot initiated,
- 32:15you know, all this stuff.
- 32:18But then
- 32:18later in the movie, when the ship is, like,
- 32:22going to rip itself apart,
- 32:25he has to manually slip a switch
- 32:29together.
- 32:29And since he can't do something else, it's like, why do you have to do this?
- 32:34Like, why isn't the ship just being, like, initiated and that's it?
- 32:39And not letting itself almost get destroyed?
- 32:42But that's movies, right?
- 32:44You just have, you know, you have those moments happening.
- 32:46You like movies. Right.
- 32:49I mean, I assume.
- 32:51Yeah. Yeah, I just do it.
- 32:52There are moments like that and I'm like, we are adapting this from a novel.
- 32:56And not to not that that's like a full excuse, but it,
- 33:00you know, it's like, okay, if you've got certain questions about,
- 33:03you know, how he's translating the language,
- 33:05if he's, you know, translating it through Rocky's.
- 33:08Sounds and why is it why.
- 33:10Every time is it Rocky.
- 33:12Sounds, you know, being produced when he's.
- 33:15You know, to translate and that that could drive.
- 33:18I was like, all right, just let it go.
- 33:20Just let. It go.
- 33:21Like, that's don't think about it.
- 33:23They're not going to put it in chime.
- 33:25Sounds like when over dialog like that's not
- 33:29how film works to make a nice experience for you right.
- 33:33So there's like turn your brain off.
- 33:36At least for this movie.
- 33:37It was like, don't worry about it.
- 33:40The sci fi aspect.
- 33:42Yeah. The gritty. Of it.
- 33:44And yeah, just go with it.
- 33:45Like they also they explain it, you know, they explain that,
- 33:48you know, he's worked on this now translator which is essentially,
- 33:52you know, we we don't need to see the middle ground of that.
- 33:55No. You know, it's it's funny this came up yesterday.
- 33:59Hunt for Red October had had one of the all time great.
- 34:03Like, don't worry about that.
- 34:05Where you're on this Russian submarine
- 34:07and everyone in the first couple of scenes is speaking Russian.
- 34:12But then when you go to Sean Connery's cabin and he's only
- 34:16with one other officer, Connery starts reading a book.
- 34:20I think there's a book of poetry, and the camera goes in real tight,
- 34:24all the way close up, like onto his mouth.
- 34:27And then he starts speaking English,
- 34:31and then the camera backs up and everyone
- 34:33except for Sam, you know, who actually still speaks in a Russian accent?
- 34:36Everyone just speaks in their regular voice.
- 34:40But you know that they're speaking Russian to each other.
- 34:44Right?
- 34:44It's like it's, you know, you the the towel of like, okay.
- 34:48Yeah.
- 34:48You know, it's for your brain to be like, this is what's happening now.
- 34:51We're going to get an easier viewing experience.
- 34:54They had to do that in two because technically, every time he spoke
- 34:59to anyone, there's like a half hour of time in between every sentence.
- 35:04They let you know that.
- 35:06And then the rest of the film is cut as if it's me and you talking right now.
- 35:10Yeah, I mean, it's it's.
- 35:12That sort of thing of like if I basically said to myself, because,
- 35:16you know, I have a nagging brain.
- 35:17Sometimes when it comes to like, it's not.
- 35:20That I thought I, I'm not trying to find loopholes.
- 35:22I'm definitely not. That kind of person.
- 35:24I just was like, have all these questions about the alien and about I was like.
- 35:30So I guess they have a very similar culture to Earth.
- 35:33Then if,
- 35:34you know, we're getting to the point of really talking and understanding
- 35:38each other.
- 35:38And I was like, don't worry about that.
- 35:41Like if you care about about that, maybe read the novel and see if it like,
- 35:45addresses gets a little bit more into the the detail of it.
- 35:48But yeah, it's like, that's not the purpose of the movie.
- 35:52I'm going to guess. And say it does not.
- 35:54It don't. You don't think so? I'll tell. It.
- 35:55No, I don't think so. Because I think we right.
- 35:58Like a movie.
- 36:01I think that's
- 36:02why his books have been so far, so successful in this adaptation
- 36:06is because it's it's written in a cinematic fashion.
- 36:10It's, you know, it really works, towards getting that because
- 36:15it I don't think it concerns itself with that.
- 36:18You know, it's it's interesting how Project Camilleri
- 36:22simultaneously like hard sci fi in some of the explanations
- 36:26and how this works and that works, and then in other aspects where it's
- 36:31more fantastical,
- 36:34it gives you just enough that you're like,
- 36:38And then that's it.
- 36:40And then you just don't worry about that shit
- 36:42because it doesn't matter how the fuck they communicate,
- 36:46it matters that you care about what they're communicating to each other.
- 36:50You know, that's your stuff is just it's just noise.
- 36:54It's just detail.
- 36:56But if you don't care about their connection, nothing matters.
- 37:02Like the whole movie doesn't matter.
- 37:03That's that is incredibly true.
- 37:05I mean, you get only I was going to say I think one of the highlights for me,
- 37:09is, is Sandra Heller, her character.
- 37:14And she could that character could be so monotone.
- 37:18You could feel like that's an underdeveloped character
- 37:20in anybody else's hands.
- 37:22And she she makes you you feel like this is a real woman
- 37:27with feelings, and she's not just this stone cold.
- 37:31I have no emotions.
- 37:32I'm going to save the planet.
- 37:34This is a mission she must go through.
- 37:36Like you see that she has she.
- 37:38The performance is spectacular.
- 37:40That you see, that she has underlying feelings about the actions
- 37:43that she's taking.
- 37:45Yeah, just not overtly expressing,
- 37:48to who she's interacting with because she's gotta keep her shit together.
- 37:52That's a lot of pressure, you know? So I.
- 37:55End of the day, she she knows that she has
- 37:58to complete what she is trying to do.
- 38:02I loved her.
- 38:03Walk us on the carrot.
- 38:04When do. And doing karaoke.
- 38:07Yeah, actually, I'm sure, like.
- 38:0880% through the song, she's like, that's enough now
- 38:12and just leaves, like, really enjoying that moment that.
- 38:17Because if there was, like, this big emotional
- 38:20end up to that track, it wouldn't have felt right.
- 38:24But the way that she's like, okay,
- 38:27we've had fun
- 38:29and it's like, and, and I don't want to be the center of this, like,
- 38:33just not really.
- 38:33You know, I am already the center of this.
- 38:36On another level. I can do that.
- 38:39I don't want to be this type of, center for very long.
- 38:45Yeah. So she really.
- 38:47Yeah.
- 38:48Interested me as a character.
- 38:50But I can't say that there's
- 38:51a Sandra Haller performance that doesn't captivate me.
- 38:55Yeah. She's kind of an all timer.
- 38:57Yeah.
- 38:57You know the movie the movie had me thinking something
- 39:01and it didn't it didn't happen.
- 39:03It's good because it wouldn't have really made much sense.
- 39:05But when he comes to and his two,
- 39:09co travelers are dead,
- 39:12and then later in the movie
- 39:15they're referring to like, well, hey, what's going to happen?
- 39:19Because this is a one way trip, what happens when we accomplish our goal
- 39:23and the two others are like, we're going to forget
- 39:27to like all of ourselves in a comfortable, fun way, you know?
- 39:33But we're going to off ourselves.
- 39:35And when they said that, part of me was wondering,
- 39:40did they already accomplish their mission?
- 39:42And he just didn't kill himself.
- 39:44And they did.
- 39:46And he doesn't remember it.
- 39:48But very a good question.
- 39:50I was wondering, I was like, oh, is that going to be something that's
- 39:53revealed like this reveal which I hate, you know,
- 39:56everything's going to be a twist because that's insane.
- 39:59But my brain paused on that for a second,
- 40:02or I was like, is he going to find out that he already accomplished what he meant
- 40:07to accomplish when he's at a moment where he thinks he failed?
- 40:12But that that didn't happen.
- 40:13And that's good because it makes all the actions.
- 40:15It would make all the actions with Rocky Point.
- 40:18As well, because they both don't know why their crew died.
- 40:22You know, it's so. Yeah.
- 40:23But I mean, that was a big question of mine of, oh, what did happen to them?
- 40:28But at the same time.
- 40:30There is a lot of this movie where it's like, don't worry about it.
- 40:32Don't just
- 40:33yeah, I mean, they're what they were in Cryosleep for what, how many years?
- 40:3930 years.
- 40:40Something like that. Yeah, I asleep alien.
- 40:42But you know, they're they're on this for like.
- 40:4630 years medicated coma.
- 40:48Cause they awake during.
- 40:49It wasn't one of them.
- 40:50The the pilot of the.
- 40:52No, we just had. To get them it's. Order.
- 40:54They were all. Just.
- 40:54No, it's alien like it is aliens.
- 40:56Where they go to sleep and the ship controls itself because it's,
- 41:01you know, essentially just going towards a destination,
- 41:04the ship that then couldn't slip a switch so it wouldn't rip itself apart.
- 41:08That is really my biggest fucking thing.
- 41:11Maybe something happened to the technology.
- 41:14Yeah, I meant it.
- 41:16You know, it's like maybe even.
- 41:18The it's it's part of the episode.
- 41:20You know.
- 41:21It's planet of the apes where he leaves with six,
- 41:27six or 5 or 6, astronauts.
- 41:30And they completely, you know, go nowhere because he wound up on Earth.
- 41:34Spoilers for the film from 1968.
- 41:37But the other ones,
- 41:39like something happens, the the seal on their
- 41:44the little capsules that they're in cracks or something due to the crash
- 41:48and that introduction of outside elements of non control
- 41:53something that's what kills the other astronauts in that movie.
- 41:57And that's just that's all I thought of in that I was like something went wrong.
- 42:00And you know right what one thing went wrong and you can't
- 42:04keep people preserved for 30 years if anything goes wrong.
- 42:09So something was wrong. Right. Yeah.
- 42:12The lack of the ship even being like, oh, by the way, this is what happened.
- 42:18It is weird, you know.
- 42:19He has no knowledge of it. There's no meta.
- 42:22It's supposed to be keeping you in this, this coma, right?
- 42:26This induced sleep.
- 42:28And it has no medical records of don't.
- 42:31Yeah. Don't trust, self,
- 42:34driving.
- 42:35Yeah.
- 42:37Because then that I guess you could just be be careful of I, I yeah.
- 42:41Because that's, that's what happens in 2001.
- 42:44You know, he, the how kills the,
- 42:48the sleeping astronauts, the other 2 or 3 astronauts that are on there.
- 42:52He kills all of them while they're in,
- 42:56you know, suspended and, man, whatever the fuck it would be in there.
- 43:00But, yeah, he, you know, that's how it kills him.
- 43:03So, yeah, there's a lot of again,
- 43:05you could look at a lot of the movie and point at other films.
- 43:09There's, there's obviously, you know, if you threw Interstellar
- 43:14and The Martian into a blender, you got a lot of this movie.
- 43:19You know, you've a lot of this movie,
- 43:22leaving and never and thinking that you're never going to come back
- 43:25and then making the choice at the end not to not to go back to Earth
- 43:29because, you know, McConaughey's character leaves, you know, he
- 43:33he realizes that everything that was
- 43:35his life is no longer there, and he has no reason to stay there.
- 43:38So he goes to populate a planet with Anne Hathaway.
- 43:41That's a good choice personally. And so.
- 43:44With me.
- 43:45Two highly attractive people are going to repopulate Earth.
- 43:48Good for them.
- 43:49You know, but there's a lot of that.
- 43:52And there's even the character of Rocky and the relationship
- 43:57between the two of them.
- 43:58I sort of Joe Dante's the explorers or explorers, not the explorers,
- 44:04which was, what, 84, 85?
- 44:07This is a blind spot for me. I'm going to have to.
- 44:09Oh, yeah, this is.
- 44:10Write it. Down class. I mean, it was a bomb.
- 44:13It was everyone when they were making it, I think the idea was like,
- 44:17we're going to be the next Goonies or something like that.
- 44:20Ethan Hawke is in it. River Phoenix.
- 44:23Oh, okay. And, I loved it.
- 44:26Like, I watched this shit ton as a kid, but there's a playfulness with Rocky
- 44:33that that it kind of reminded me of explorers
- 44:35a bit, which was a movie I had not thought of in a very long time.
- 44:40I'm gonna write that down.
- 44:41River and launch explorers as explorers.
- 44:43I feel like they actually had a sort of 4K,
- 44:47and this silliness is going to make me get
- 44:51explorers on 4K,
- 44:53which I'm fine. Was
- 44:55fine was.
- 44:58So what have you been?
- 44:59Pete has has told me he does not believe in, just not streaming something.
- 45:05He'll just buy it.
- 45:06I tried to explain.
- 45:07I try to explain a library app. That's quite brilliant.
- 45:10Now, where you get to watch the movie is off of it for free,
- 45:14because it's like your library card, and he's.
- 45:15Like, just buy it. Just.
- 45:17Just what?
- 45:17I got to wait.
- 45:18I'm like, for some other fucking person to return?
- 45:21No. Did you know this is the. Brilliance of this?
- 45:23I'm trying to explain this library.
- 45:25I like the brilliance of it is.
- 45:27It's a streaming app for the library of the movies.
- 45:30And it's like you can you have a certain amount of tickets a month, right?
- 45:34And you're just, you know, waiting. It's like.
- 45:35It's just like being honest when.
- 45:37I'm watching on my phone.
- 45:40No, you can't see it to your TV.
- 45:41It's it's just like my TV.
- 45:44So I want. To get across. To them. Crowdsourcing.
- 45:46Come on.
- 45:47Come on.
- 45:48I do agree with myself.
- 45:51I do agree with you that any any Blu ray
- 45:54is is a million times better than even the 4K streaming it.
- 45:58There's the physicals.
- 46:00I will advocate for that.
- 46:01But in the meantime, if you don't want to purchase
- 46:05the film, there's this great like library app.
- 46:08That you can and I.
- 46:10I would encourage like it used to.
- 46:12That's a good resource.
- 46:14I think we should update libraries.
- 46:16Yes. Fitness.
- 46:17But anyway, Pete will not be doing that.
- 46:21People just buy it. Yeah, I well.
- 46:24It's $90 right now. I can own this forever.
- 46:28It's perfect.
- 46:28Or you could stream it, right?
- 46:29You right now from the library up for free.
- 46:31It's not you're not paying for the streaming service.
- 46:33It's it's a public service.
- 46:36Okay.
- 46:37That that's.
- 46:42Yes we do.
- 46:43And anyway, we'll wrap up wrap up our discussion about.
- 46:48Project Hail Mary.
- 46:49I think I walked out of it going it was a it was enjoyable.
- 46:53But it.
- 46:54Wasn't giving me a ton of like.
- 46:58Brain food to chew on.
- 47:00And it's not like.
- 47:02A knock, though. It's like thinking about it.
- 47:04It's not a knock.
- 47:05Like I found it. It highly enjoyable, film.
- 47:08You know, it's a good blockbuster. It's a good.
- 47:11I mean, I know.
- 47:12It's April, but it. Was a good summer movie.
- 47:15You know, I'll put it in.
- 47:16Quotes are spring, you know, heading into the summer?
- 47:18Yes. Spring. Right.
- 47:20Spring break. Yeah. Is now. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:23Oh, so I mean, I maybe it hit on some like
- 47:27the Rocky and, I guess my final thought is, you know, maybe the Rocky and,
- 47:33Grace relationship at times was like, overly sentimental.
- 47:36But yeah, whatever.
- 47:40It's a. Rock puppet.
- 47:41We're
- 47:43we're basically telling a story of a rock dog.
- 47:46Yeah.
- 47:46So which is another interesting thing that I won't get into
- 47:50because I think about, like, the intellect of, of the society
- 47:53that has made it or like Rocky's people have made it with this minimal technology.
- 47:59And I'm like, wow, you know, humans are a bunch of idiots.
- 48:01And it's like these guys, I don't think it's minimal technology.
- 48:05I think they make it look, I mean, because there's.
- 48:08Something it's like it.
- 48:09Yeah, it's like a sophisticated it probably is more sophisticated.
- 48:13And that's why I said like, oh, because the humans are a bunch of idiots.
- 48:15They can't figure out certain things.
- 48:17And Rocky is like just an engineer.
- 48:20So, anyway, we don't need to get into
- 48:23we don't need to get to Rocky's character backstory behavior.
- 48:28I mean, if anything. It's all through, like a translation app, so we.
- 48:30Don't really know.
- 48:33Yeah.
- 48:33You could be like a broken language sort of thing.
- 48:36Also, you know,
- 48:39it can it?
- 48:40When you think of
- 48:43when I come into stuff like that
- 48:45where it's like, oh, this seems overly simplified for these people.
- 48:49Like, how did they do that?
- 48:49It's because it's common for them.
- 48:52You know, they're they've reached that point
- 48:54for thousands and thousands of years before we did.
- 48:58So for them, it's yeah,
- 49:01it's like me trying to explain
- 49:04what an ness's like. Yeah.
- 49:06You pop the thing in plays, video game.
- 49:09What else do you need to know?
- 49:11You know, like that kind of a thing of
- 49:13of you're talking to a child.
- 49:16So you talk.
- 49:16You talk like a child to a child.
- 49:21I actually very cynically during the movie,
- 49:23I was like, I'm amazed no one's made the joke more like crying.
- 49:29Gosling. Because, yeah, he's.
- 49:32Yeah, he's got a lot of he's got a ton of emotional moments in this.
- 49:35And I mean, it's.
- 49:36No one's picked up on this.
- 49:38His last name is very on the nose.
- 49:42You know, the movie's called Hail Mary Project.
- 49:44Hail Mary.
- 49:45His last name is Grace.
- 49:46Hail Mary, full of grace.
- 49:48It's that didn't click for you.
- 49:50Well done.
- 49:51That must be an interesting moment that you're having right now.
- 49:54Yeah, I very much enjoyed it.
- 49:56And, yeah, it's it's a fun
- 49:59summer blockbuster thing. And
- 50:04I if you were to put it to me, I prefer Martian.
- 50:07I think, yeah.
- 50:09Yeah, I probably prefer Martian.
- 50:10And if we're, you know, if I
- 50:12throw in other space like interstellar, I prefer interstellar too.
- 50:16But I thought this was just a blast.
- 50:21It's a it's a lot of fun.
- 50:22It's just a nice, good time at the movies.
- 50:25And, huzzah for me.
- 50:28Come on.
- 50:28You know.
- 50:29And it's doing well, and I love. It.
- 50:32Deserves it. And it's it's. Well.
- 50:34Yeah. Exactly.
- 50:36I want I wonder what Lord Miller will follow this up with now.
- 50:40Well, I gotta work.
- 50:41I mean, they I think they probably are
- 50:44in post-production of the the next Spider-Verse
- 50:48spider.
- 50:50I don't know.
- 50:50Yeah.
- 50:50That's, that's like 28 slated for 2027, I think.
- 50:54I mean, I as long as it's what it should be.
- 50:58Take your time.
- 51:00No ones, you know what I mean?
- 51:02I remember when they said like, oh, it's going to be delayed.
- 51:04I was like, that's fine, that's fine.
- 51:06Just make it what you want it to be.
- 51:10Yeah. Right now 2027.
- 51:11So they're, you know, probably still in production honestly.
- 51:14Yeah. Made that. They make fun. Of everything.
- 51:16Let them do another Jump Street film.
- 51:18You fucking cowards.
- 51:21That's like them.
- 51:22That's I mean I mean like legitimately I'm like, no really.
- 51:25Let them make another one. Right?
- 51:27I don't know, trying to like, tell is still,
- 51:30didn't have some weird stuff.
- 51:32I'm not sure. Something about.
- 51:36Girlfriend manipulation or.
- 51:38Some, like, crazy, I don't know.
- 51:40Yeah, he did some crazy stuff, but, yeah, it's not, you know.
- 51:44So as long as you get, you get a gambit in there or.
- 51:48Okay, that's all we need.
- 51:50Yeah. Everyone calls control gambit.
- 51:55I don't know if I do, but
- 51:57you're wrong.
- 51:58We wrong
- 52:01live and live in an errors.
- 52:05This is a movie that could have worked with him to let me script straight.
- 52:08Blanking on his name. Jesus, Channing Tatum.
- 52:11Yeah, I guess he Channing Tatum in this movie, actually.
- 52:14Really? I don't think I would enjoy it nearly as much.
- 52:17I'll be honest, I don't know.
- 52:18It's still be fun though.
- 52:20Yeah, I get actually emotional punches.
- 52:23Funnier, I think.
- 52:24Yeah, yeah, it would be a
- 52:26it would be a straight up comedy, like, yeah, I could make this.
- 52:29Yeah. The heaviness might be gone.
- 52:33But anyway.
- 52:35Well, thanks for chatting.
- 52:36The project Hail Mary, I think.
- 52:38We talked about longer than I anticipated. But.
- 52:41Again, you know, we just.
- 52:43Go on tangents about other films.
- 52:45And that's that's kind of the point of, you know, talking about film
- 52:49and this podcast, even as, you know, lead where you're
- 52:53curious, where the connections happen and have fun with it.
- 52:57And thank you for having me. Yeah, of course.
- 53:01Hey, guys.
