- 1:18episode, but we're saving that for actually a Christmas time. So this episode
- 1:23is from January eighth, nineteen forty four, and the title is double Disguise.
- 1:46What's the matter? What is another case for the Cutter? Yes,
- 1:59it's another case for that most famous of all manhunters, the detective was ability
- 2:01of solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective fiction. Nick Carter,
- 2:07Master Detective The Night's Curious Adventure a double the guy our Nick Carter and the
- 2:15mystery of the kidnapped ares. Pardon me? Could you tell me which way
- 2:29to Bond Avenue? Please? Bond Avenue? Why? Yes, we'll just
- 2:31walk three blocks? Is a stick up? What? Yeah? Hand it
- 2:36over and be quick about it? And what over your wallet? Of course?
- 2:39Come on, come now? Isn't it quite late in the evening for
- 2:43this sort of thing? That's funny about this? I mean business. You
- 2:47haven't been in the business very long, have you. That's enough talk.
- 2:51Just hand it over, hand it over. I'll shoot you really would shoot
- 2:54me, would you? Yes? This is your last chance. Please.
- 2:59I don't want you, okay, but you won't find very much all right,
- 3:06I'll take that toy personally. Now, oh oh, you knew all
- 3:13the well sure with the fool most people. But you're just happen to pick
- 3:16on the wrong man. I'm Nick Carter, Nick Carter, Gosh, I
- 3:21guess I did. My name is Brown, Chester Brown. Well, mister
- 3:24Brown, let's have it. What's the story. You're no gunman? You're
- 3:28right, mister Carter. I've never done this sort of thing before. And
- 3:30why did you try to hold me up? Then? I was desperate I've
- 3:35been out of work for three months now. In times like these, yes,
- 3:38I know, but I'm a salesman. There's no need for them.
- 3:40Now, how about manual work? I tried that, but my heart isn't
- 3:44very strong. I see married? Yes, I was married six months ago.
- 3:49Where do you live? You live in a couple of rooms in the
- 3:51boarding house, only a few blocks from here. Mister Carter, why do
- 3:54you ask? I'd like to go home with you and meet your wife.
- 4:00That means you're going to turn me over to the police. No, not
- 4:02yet, at least, thanks, But one never knows, mister Brown.
- 4:05That's cool right this way, mister Carter. Stella O stella, stella.
- 4:28That's strange. She's home. Maybe she went out for a while. This
- 4:31time of night. She'd be back by Now what does it mean? Well,
- 4:36it probably doesn't mean up. I'll wait a minute, is it not?
- 4:41Rehaps this will explain to her. Let me have it your chit be
- 4:45gone for a few days. Don't worry about me. All our troubles will
- 4:49soon be over. We're coming into a fortune. I can't explain anymore now
- 4:56you are, Stella. Well, congratulations. Look what's enclosed? Hmmm?
- 5:02One hundred dollars bill, I see it? Please? Oh here you are,
- 5:08Gosha. I can't believe it. It's too good to be true.
- 5:11Tell me, mister Brown, is your wife any rich relatives, rich relatives
- 5:15never heard of? Speak of any mother and father no longer living. While
- 5:19she has an uncle, man by the name of James Spear. He lived
- 5:24somewhere out in Colorado. Maybe it's he yes. Maybe What are you doing,
- 5:30mister Carter? Just checking the number on this bill against the list I
- 5:33have here? Why? What is it? Mister Brown? I'm afraid my
- 5:41congratulations were a bit premature. What do you mean? Have you read the
- 5:45evening paper? No? I haven't seen a paper all day. Why Michael
- 5:48Steelefield, a banker, was murdered last night. Ten thousand dollars were stolen
- 5:51from his private vault and one of the cleverest safe cracking jobs seen here in
- 5:55years. What's that got to do with this? I stolen money consisted of
- 5:59one hundred dollars bill, So what the bill your wife lived for you with
- 6:01one of those stolen by the murder room. Oh but mister Cotter, she
- 6:04had nothing to do with that. I feel sure of that. Mister Brown,
- 6:08then why should you want to Suppose you went out tomorrow morning and try
- 6:10to spend that bill. What would have happened? Why? Oh, oh,
- 6:15I see, I'd have probably been arrested as the murderer exactly. But
- 6:23why did she leave that bill for me? Because she's as much the victim
- 6:26of this frame up as you are Brown Up. My hunch is correct,
- 6:30someone's trying to make trouble for you and for her. Oh but mister Cotter,
- 6:32why should I don't ask questions yet? Just listen to me, Pack
- 6:36up a bag and get out of here tonight. Go to seventy three Bleaker
- 6:40Revenue. That's a rooming house run by friends of mine on the other side
- 6:43of town. Sit tight until you hear from me. Don't tell anyone where
- 6:46you are, and don't use your right name. But suppose my wife comes
- 6:48back. I said to leave it all in my hands. But why you
- 6:51don't be a fool. If you don't follow my directions, you may be
- 6:54dead before morning. So you don't think either Brown or his wife had anything
- 7:08to do with the murder? Nick, No, Patsy, I don't too
- 7:10obvious. A frame up A frame up, yes, So you see the
- 7:14murderer persuades missus Brown to go summer with him on some pretext or other,
- 7:16and gives her one of the stolen bills to leave for her husband, who
- 7:19was sure to be arrested if he tries suspend it. But why should the
- 7:23murderer want to pin the job on mister Brown? Glad? I don't know
- 7:25the answer to Patsy, except that, for some reason rather he wants to
- 7:29get Brown out of the way. Hello, Hello, Nick, I'm oh
- 7:33Riley. What is it You still say you're not interested in this? Till
- 7:38Field kill him? As a matter of fact, Riley, something's happened since
- 7:41you spoke to me about it. I've changed my mind. So you've heard
- 7:45already heard? What about the big Portal Express robbery down on Front Street?
- 7:49That's where I'm calling from. No, that's news to me. What do
- 7:53they get rally forty thousand dollars in negotiable bonds right out of the vart,
- 7:58Nick, not bad? This is the interesting part. Yeah, do you
- 8:03know who those bonds were being shipped to? Michael Stillfield? Still Field?
- 8:07Okay, Riley, thanks, I'll be right down. Well, Patsy,
- 8:13this thing gets more interesting by the minute. Let's go. Ah, here
- 8:26you are, Nick, Hello, Patsy, well Riley, let's have a
- 8:31look sure thing, Nick, come on inside. Now. This is mister
- 8:37Johnson. Nick, he's in charge of the express office. How are you
- 8:39do so glad you came, mister Carter. Nothing like this has happened in
- 8:43the thirty years I've been with the company. Well, I suppose there's always
- 8:46the first time, mister Johnson. That's the bold over there, mister Carter.
- 8:48No thanks, m certainly don't come any finer. That's true, mister
- 8:56Cutter, absolutely burglar proof. Who are so? We've was anything else taken?
- 9:01No, just the bonds and there as good as cash. You know,
- 9:05why did it discover that they were missing this morning? They were putting
- 9:07that vault last night. I watched the book keeper do it myself, I
- 9:11see, And you were the one who closed the vaults. That's right.
- 9:16I closed it and adjusted the time mechanism myself. Seems to be intact.
- 9:22It's just it, mister Carter. I can't understand it. Neither the vault
- 9:28lock nor the time attachment had been tampered with. It looks like the devil's
- 9:31own work. It's absolutely incredible, mister Carter, And there you have it.
- 9:35I say it was open and the bonds are gone. What do you
- 9:39make of it? Nick? There aren't many men who could have pulled off
- 9:41this kind of a job. You're right there, Nick. As a matter
- 9:45of fact, I don't know anybody but Nick Carter could have done it.
- 9:48He's not handed with locks. Of all times, you have some idea,
- 9:52mister Carter. You say the bonds were put in the vault last night.
- 9:56Yes, that's right. But what time did you say? Well, we
- 10:00received him from the west on the five o'clock train. Did you say from
- 10:03the west. For yes, they came from Colorado and they were addressed to
- 10:07Michael Steelefield. That's right. And they were putting the vall a little after
- 10:11five, and as you already know, that's the last we were seeing them.
- 10:15Thank you, mister Johnson. I don't think we need bother you any
- 10:18further. I do hope you'll be able to track down that thief. It's
- 10:22more than a thief. You've put me on the track of the man we're
- 10:24looking for, mister Johnson, as a murderer. What was that's tough you
- 10:37were given Johnson about looking for a murderer? Nick, that's exactly what I
- 10:41meant rallying. You mean there's a connection between the murder of Michael Stillfield and
- 10:45this robbery, Nick, you catch on fast, Patsy. How do you
- 10:48figure it, Nick? Well, on both cases there was Stillefield's property that
- 10:50was stolen, and in both cases there was a remarkable safe cracking job.
- 10:54Right, there's no doubt about it. Looks like it could be the same
- 10:58ones, all right, And you recall where Johnson said those bonds came from,
- 11:01Yes, from colorado' it sure. I remember his saying that. But
- 11:05what's that got to do with it? Just a hunt? Rally by judging
- 11:09by the way these two safes are broken into, I think I know who
- 11:11probably did it, Clint Bartow. Clint Barto, you're having me believe in
- 11:18the dead come to life again? Nick, Why don't you remember he was
- 11:22reported dead five years ago up in Canada someplace. Yes, but where Clint
- 11:26Bartow's concerned, I don't have much faith in that kind of a report.
- 11:28He's the most dangerous and resourceful criminal in the contents Riley. I wouldn't be
- 11:33surprised that he had that report circulated purposely. No, I hadn't thought of
- 11:37it that way. Furthermore, I suggest you make a thorough check on the
- 11:41background of Michael Stielfield, the murdered banker an idea, there may be some
- 11:43interesting facts turned. I'm okay, Nick, it's as good as done when
- 11:46you got the infomt Wow, what is it? Nick? We're being followed?
- 11:52Huh, well not for long. We won't be, you know.
- 11:54Just let I want to handle this my own way. Rally, you continue
- 11:58on the word you're going, Patsy, and I'll turn up this side street.
- 12:01Okay, Nick, I'll be seeing you so long. All right,
- 12:07come along this way? Is still following me? He's hanging on all right,
- 12:13Yeah, enter this doorway here? Okay, Now we'll just wait.
- 12:18He'll be along. Yeah, here it comes down. Stay here, Betsy,
- 12:26be careful. Nick. Hey you what's the idea following me? Wh
- 12:35me? Yes? You you've been tailing me ever since? Oh no,
- 12:37you don't. I ain't done nothing, mister, No, not yet.
- 12:43You have it. Now talk my friend, and let's hear something interesting.
- 12:48Okay, I was tailing you, that's what I thought. What's your game?
- 12:52Oh? Not my game. It was some bloke I met near the
- 12:56Express office. Yes, what about this bloke, Well, he says,
- 12:58is it spot in it for me? If I keep an eye on you
- 13:01all day, you know, see where you go and what you do?
- 13:05Well, then what Well that's all mister, And I was supposed to report
- 13:09back to night at eight with a dope and get paid. I see where
- 13:13were you supposed to report back? Beach Street, opposite the railway station.
- 13:18What did this man look like? Oh? You can't miss him, mister.
- 13:20He's about six foot six, dark hair, he has long caved nose.
- 13:26Wow, so he's the one. Oh you know him? Huh yes,
- 13:30I think I do. You were off at ten dollars, you say,
- 13:33here's twenty? What for? We're forgetting all about reporting back? See?
- 13:39Oh I get it? Sure thing. Thanks? Wait a minute,
- 13:41yeah, I want to get a good look at you. Huh m hmm.
- 13:48Yeah, Okay, I shan't forget what you look like. In a
- 13:50hurry, I'll beat it and remember stay out of my way, okay,
- 13:56mister, All right, Patsy, come on, what now, Nick,
- 14:01We're going back to the office. I've got a special job to do now
- 14:03that requires a complete change of wardrobe. In fact, Patsy, a complete
- 14:05change of everything that does it handle that mirror? Will you? Patsy here?
- 14:20Nick? Hmm, not bad? Well, Patsy, do you think
- 14:24I looked like the man who was following us? Simply perfect? Nick,
- 14:28I positively couldn't tell the two in your part? Now now the voice?
- 14:31Okay, lady, thanks? Well, I guess I better blow it.
- 14:35The mob's waiting for me, Nick, Yes, what is it, Betsy.
- 14:41I'm afraid of what you may be letting yourself in for. Oh no,
- 14:45don't worry. I'll be watching my step. You better like one false
- 14:48move with bottle, Betsy. I know the kind of man I'm up against.
- 14:52Hello. Oh yes, Riley, Oh you there what you find?
- 15:00I see? Yeah? That's fine. Rally Oh no, no, no,
- 15:03I've got a plan on my own. Yeah, I'll do that all
- 15:07right, Riley. Thanks? Hye, what is it? Nick? I'd
- 15:11see my suspicions were right. The report came through and Michael Steelefield he proves
- 15:15to be none other than James spear Steer. You mean missus Brown's uncle,
- 15:18right. Seems he made his money out West many years ago, then got
- 15:20into some difficulties there, changed his name and came east, and he never
- 15:24got in touch with his knee apparently not well. Then that fortune Missus Brown
- 15:28spoke about in her note is true. Yes, according to his will,
- 15:31she becomes sol air to the entire estate, being his only surviving relative.
- 15:35Well not be if she lives, Patsy. If she lives, why shouldn't
- 15:41she live? Nick? The person she left home with last night must be
- 15:43the same person who killed Stalefield. The hundred dollar bill she left her husband
- 15:46proves that you think that. I think that if that person is Barto,
- 15:50she's in very real danger. Steelfield on the fortune was killed. Now missus
- 15:54Brown owns it, and she may very well be next on the list.
- 15:56I see what you mean. What time is it not, Patsy? Okay,
- 16:00I better be off. I'm going to keep my eight o'clock date.
- 16:03You will be careful, Nick, Yes, of course I will. You
- 16:04know what you're to do. Yes, I'll do just what you're telling me.
- 16:07While so long, Patsy, I'll be seeing you. I hope,
- 16:10so, Nick, I hope so eight o'clock And this is the corner,
- 16:27all right. Nobody seems to be sure. Oh you're waiting for someone.
- 16:37But yeah, I was supposed to meet a guy here at eight. Okay,
- 16:41I guess you other one? All? I mean, where we're going
- 16:45taking out of the boys. Why it's that you'll find out? Come on?
- 16:59Oh yeah, I'm just a minute. It's me boys, just a
- 17:08guy. Boys, Yeah, come in, close the door alone. Well
- 17:15what'd you find out? I followed the guy like you said? Well,
- 17:19how about that ten spotch you promises where you'll get it? Now? What
- 17:23happened? Nothing? What do you mean? I tell the guy to a
- 17:29house on Elm Street. They went in. I didn't see him come out
- 17:30all day? I see it. Well, okay, you did a good
- 17:34job. Here's a ten anything else, mister? I could use more,
- 17:40though, and I ain't particular how I make it. If you get what
- 17:44I mean? Yeah, I get what you mean. You see. I
- 17:45figured you must have some kind of a racket, mister, very clever reasoning
- 17:51on your part. Yeah, I'd sort of like to get in on it.
- 17:55That is, if you could use a guy like me, maybe I
- 17:56could. You will. You don't happen to know the name of that man
- 18:02you were following. Do you never seen him before? Oh? It was
- 18:04Nick Carter? Nick Carter? Who's he never heard of him? Eh?
- 18:10Well, he's just about the greatest detective the side of the Atlantic. This
- 18:14Carter must be quite a guy, quite a guy who's right, quite a
- 18:18bag of tricks. He's the one man who stood between me and a fortune
- 18:22on three different occasions. Put you in the jug. Eh no, not
- 18:26quite when on econna him. I've had to lay low the last five years.
- 18:30Now I've got another fortune within my grasp, and he's not gonna stand
- 18:33in my way again, No, sir, I'll see to that. Yeah,
- 18:37wiped out of scheme. Euh yeah, beautiful one, beautiful and simple.
- 18:44He's gonna be hoist by his own petard come again. One of his
- 18:49own great tricks is going to be his undoing. I don't get you,
- 18:55all right, Nick Carter, you can come out from one of that trick
- 18:56voice. Now he can covered alone. Right. Well, congratulations, Barrow.
- 19:03I was sure I had your fool. It was a neat job,
- 19:06Carter. Your resemblance to trigger is absolutely uncanny. Trigger. Yeah, one
- 19:11of my own men. It was all a frame and you fell for it.
- 19:15Knowing you and your tricks, I figured that's exactly what you do.
- 19:18And now that I'm here, what are you proposed to do? Something I
- 19:22should have done a long time ago. This is the end of the road
- 19:26for you, Carter, ba I think you're bluffing. Oh you do,
- 19:30Yes, I do. Why do you have to go to all this trouble.
- 19:34You could have had one of your men shoot me in the street.
- 19:37Oh God, I had a special reason for wanting to bring you here alive.
- 19:40Yeah, what's that? I wanted to see the look on your face
- 19:44when I opened the door to this inner room and you saw this what Chester
- 19:49Brown? Yeah? And I assure you he wouldn't be sleeping so peacefully if
- 19:53he knew what I was planning for him and for you. Hey, you
- 19:57wake up, wake up, you company. You gave him too much of
- 20:03that dope, Alan, You might have killed him. So what what you
- 20:07want? Yeah? But I want him to wait until mister Carter could keep
- 20:10him company. I want them to go out together. Come on, you
- 20:12wake up. What's all? You may not believe it. Brown with this
- 20:18tough looking thug is really our old friend Nick Carter. Oh, oh,
- 20:23so it's you, mister Carter. I thought I told you to hide away
- 20:26that address I gave you. I did these guys found out where I was.
- 20:30Did you tell anybody where you were? No? No, nobody.
- 20:33Just keep my address my old land ladies, so she could forward my mail,
- 20:37right, boy, is Nick Carter? Well, now that I've got
- 20:41you both here together, I'm going to hang you both together. Figure.
- 20:45Yeah, boss, come in here, help me alone. Tie this great
- 20:47detective up. Well, I keep him covered. It'll be a pleasure.
- 20:49Boss. Hello that detective and thanks again for that twenty don't mention it.
- 20:55I want this other guy too, boy, Yeah, I get him up
- 20:57on his feet. I want to watch him dance together. Yeah, come
- 21:00on, you came on? Okay, boss or set? Did you frisk
- 21:06him? Yeah? He's clean? Is he gone? All right? God?
- 21:11What are they gonna do? Looks as if they mean to hang us?
- 21:14No, no, no, can they can't do that? Squeek like
- 21:19a stuck pick like Carter. He isn't saying a word. I still don't
- 21:23believe you're going through with this. Barttle, Now get Carter's rope over the
- 21:26rafter at this end. Put Browns rope over the other end. They now
- 21:34a couple of chairs. Wanted to stand down, hair bottle with nothing to
- 21:37gain by murdering us in cold blood. This way, you've killed one man
- 21:41already, You've stolen fifty thousand dollars. What more do you want? Fifty
- 21:44thousand? That's pin money. Still Field is worth five million? What about
- 21:48it? That fortune is gonna be mine, every cent of it, and
- 21:52you're the only man that might stop me. So I'm taking no chances.
- 21:56I know you're a clever barttle, but I can't see how you're going to
- 21:57get your hands on steal field money now that he's dead. On the contrary,
- 22:02Carter, that's what makes it all so simple, because it makes Missus
- 22:06Brown his sole heir. And Missus Brown has been let to believe by something
- 22:10that I said. But I'm a lawyer, and she's ready turned over to
- 22:14me all the credentials necessary to claim her uncle's fortune. I'm sure my own
- 22:18wife will have no trouble at all convincing the real lawyers that she is Missus
- 22:23Brown, the real Missus Brown. Poor woman won't be with us very long.
- 22:29I'm afraid you don't after you? So that's your devilish game, is
- 22:33it? Yes? And it's a scheme that I'm sure is gonna pay off.
- 22:36I don't think so about Oh what do you mean? You really don't
- 22:38think I was foolish enough to come up here without taking certain precautions, such
- 22:41as what the police know exactly where I am? I'm afraid the laugh's on
- 22:45you A bottle? Yeah, I got out of the window. Trigger.
- 22:48Okay, I don't say nothing. Hey, wait, say there is a
- 22:53cop crosses to what's it doing? Hey? Maybe there's something to it.
- 22:57Bosh. Let's get the singing over with and beat it. Okay, maybe
- 23:02what you said was Ocarter. It isn't going to help you much. Get
- 23:04them up in the chairs. Boys, There you go. That's it.
- 23:11Other ropes died fast alone. Yeah, boys, the moroke. Well,
- 23:15goodbye, mister Brown and mister Carter. Kick the chairs away, boys,
- 23:23dance Cotter dance, dance. All right, boys, let's go back to
- 23:27the hideaway. So that was his plan, Patchy, I see Nick didn't
- 23:42come out in a half an hour. We were to go in after him.
- 23:45The times just about what is it, pat there's three men leaving the
- 23:49building. You're getting into that car and in a novel? Hurry too,
- 23:53Come on, Patty, let's go in. Nick. Nick? Where are
- 24:00you? Nick? Carter? Are you here? Try this door? He's
- 24:04not here. Try that one over there, he's not here. It's getting
- 24:08so talk again, patchy? Listen? Oh? Nick, are you all
- 24:12right? Let me find the light here? Nick? What's happened? What
- 24:18you try to hang us? That's Brown nearly passed out, but I think
- 24:22he's going to pull through now, Nick, are you all right now?
- 24:26Yeah? I'm okay. My throat's pretty sore, but I live long enough
- 24:30to see Bartow and his men behind bar. Take it easy, Think there's
- 24:33time enough for that. There isn't rally? You stay here with Brown?
- 24:37A cot for him? Rally? Where's yours? Just on the block?
- 24:40Why we're having a second to lose? We gotta follow Barto every minute counts
- 24:42now. The woman's life set stake. There's no sign of them yet,
- 24:57Nick. Oh that's all right right it keepstraight ahead on this road. Hey,
- 25:00do you have an extra gun in the car? Yeah? Yeah,
- 25:02you'll find one under the seat there? Good? Oh, yes, here
- 25:07it is. How does your head feel? Nick? How much better?
- 25:10Now? How did you ever get loose? Nick? They actually had just
- 25:12strung up, didn't they? They sure did? I can still feel it.
- 25:15Well, how did you do it? After they tied my wrist?
- 25:18I got barted in talking and gave me time to work them loose? Oh?
- 25:22You mean you swear your wrists when they tied them, so that when
- 25:23you relaxed, it'd be so much smaller. Huh, Except that having my
- 25:27hands free wouldn't have helped me much if bart On his man hadn't left right
- 25:30away. Fortunately, they saw you coming across the street and they ran soon
- 25:33as they strung us up. What did you do then, Nick? By
- 25:36that time, i'd work my hands loose, so I grabbed the rope above
- 25:38my head, pulled myself up. That was close as it was. I
- 25:42cut the rope with a little trick knife that's built into my thie class that
- 25:45I ever thought to look for one there, and I cut Brown down.
- 25:49Poor fellow. He was almost gone. Take Heaven's out. Smarter them,
- 25:52Nick, there's Herbarto, that dirty murdering no goods count h it's a car
- 25:57ahead of us. Oh, who's that the right one? Nick? Let
- 26:00me see someone's dust on that J two? Oh? Our seven? Is
- 26:08that last? Or six? Yes? That's a car? All right?
- 26:11Not take it easy, rally, I don't want to get suspicious, right.
- 26:15Yeah, they're turning up that dirt road, then, Nick, you
- 26:18shall I follow him? Say? I know where that hideout is? Now
- 26:22how you do. Yes, must be the old Fairbanks Cave not far from
- 26:25here, bart use it before you stop the car. Here. If luck's
- 26:27with us, this is the end of the trail and the end of Barto.
- 26:41Yeah, that's it over there, Rally see it now here. We
- 26:44got him cornered like retch, Nick, all we have to do now we
- 26:47sit tight and wait for him to come out. That won't do. May
- 26:49We got missus Brown and then we've got to get in before it's too late.
- 26:52Nick, there's something coming out. It's a trigger. Come on,
- 26:56Rally, this is that chance. Quiet Now, we'll creep up. I'm
- 27:00right with you. Nick, you'll get behind him. Oh that was worth
- 27:11twenty dollars. Now for the boss himself. Oh Boss, what are we
- 27:22gonna get it over with right now? Malone? Did you take a look
- 27:26at her? Yeah, she's all tied up the way we left it all
- 27:27right? Hey, trigger grigger? Yeah, boys coming, watched up that
- 27:33special little job on the lady inside. We're gonna take care of that right
- 27:37now. Then what, Boss, well do you mean then? What?
- 27:40Then we bury her? Of course, that's the end of missus Brown.
- 27:41Then my wife takes overclaims the fortune and we're all set for life. Oh
- 27:45yeah, yeah, I was forgetting that. You're gonna palm the wife off
- 27:48as Missus Brown. You talk too much trigger. I prefer action, and
- 27:51so do I get your hands up? Playing bart on you to own?
- 27:52Hey? What is this? Boys is by by his own b They caught
- 27:57it. It can't be boss, what it is? Now? Back up,
- 28:00both of you and keep those hands up high. Alrighty, come on
- 28:04in good work, Nick? What are you in time? Yes, Missus
- 28:08Brown's okay, she's inside there. I guess we can call it a day.
- 28:12Nick is saved the lives of the Browns, and we got butto and
- 28:15his gang where we can put him away forever. That's right, that's true.
- 28:19Clint Barter and his tricks hoist by his own pretid What in the world
- 28:25does that expression mean? Nick? That Oh, it's an old Hindu proverb
- 28:27Raley. It means man who make news for other fellow sometime find it around
- 28:33own Nick. This has been another of the strange adventures of Nick Carter,
- 28:53Master Detective, which are brought to you regularly at the same time by w
- 28:59R. Mutual. What's on the menu for next week? Nick? Imagine
- 29:02a murderer sitting in the death cell it States prison. It's just eight hours
- 29:06before he's scheduled to die in the electric chair, and then suddenly he sends
- 29:08for Nick Carter to prove he's innocent. Why he waits long before he sent
- 29:11for Nick, Well, that's all I part of the story, Joe.
- 29:15But I want to tell you that the next eight hours are about the busiest
- 29:18eight hours that Nick ever spent. And was he innocent? That's also a
- 29:21part of next week's story. In other words, mister Ripley, we're just
- 29:23not telling anymore until next week, so I see. But I think when
- 29:26you've heard it, you'll agree that it's a story well worth hearing. So
- 29:30long, So long, Folk, So long to both of you for another
- 29:33week. In the strange adventure you have just heard, Nick Carter was impersonated
- 29:37by Lon Clark, Patsy by Helen Choate. The story was written for Nick
- 29:42Carter by Ralph Burkey. Original music was played by Lou White. The entire
- 29:47production was under the direction of Jack McGregor. Next week, at the same
- 30:00time, listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter, entitled nine Hours to
- 30:06Live Our Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Deathhouse. This story is a
- 30:17copyrighted feature of Street and Smith's Publications Incorporated. The Return of Nick Carter is
- 30:22produced in the studios of WR and is broadcast over most of these stations every
- 30:26Saturday evening at seven o'clock Eastern wartime. This is mutual welcome back. Well,
- 30:49a little shock that it didn't quite work out for Nick, even though
- 30:55we ought to see more of that Master of Disguss thing. It was almost
- 30:57like they were trying to build this guy up as almost an American Moriarty.
- 31:03Of course, it's kind of hard to do that if you dispose of them
- 31:06in the same episode you introduce him in. But nevertheless, a pretty interesting
- 31:14episode. I should mention that the lost episodes we had from November twenty fourth,
- 31:21the Disappearing Corpse, the December fourth, the West Dock Street murders,
- 31:27then the Secret of the Ruined Fort and the Newsrael Crime. Then they had
- 31:32the Christmas episode, and then this long I'm looking at otrsite dot com list
- 31:38the Newsreel Crime again. So whether there was an error in the log or
- 31:42they opted to play it twice, I do not know, but anyway,
- 31:52that was that for this episode. In Nick Carter. Well, now we
- 31:55turned to some listener comments and feedback, and we have Dawn says just simply
- 32:01love the shows. Cody offers a comment on the first Nick Carter show,
- 32:08Nick Carter is not my favorite show, but it's not the worst. However,
- 32:14this episode was bad. I think they took the script from an old
- 32:16Loan Arranger episode. That being said, I like what you're doing, Adam.
- 32:21Keep up the great work, Thanks so much. Not certain if I'm
- 32:25not an expert in the Loan Ranger, but any listeners out there who are,
- 32:30it'd be interesting to pinpoint the script because I love it. You know,
- 32:34it's kind of easy to do a straightforward adaptation from one type of detective
- 32:39to another. I always find it interesting when a program is adapted from an
- 32:45entirely different genre. For example, there was an episode of Voyage of the
- 32:51Scarlet Queen that was later adapted into an episode of Johnny Doller, and an
- 32:55episode of Sam Spay turned into an episode of Mister Moto. Those are all
- 33:00fun to actually see an execution. And then we have an email in from
- 33:05Mirth who says, mister g at the end of your plate again at a
- 33:13extra series, you asked for ideas for future extras. Here are a couple.
- 33:15What about shows that feature very famous actors who might not fit precisely into
- 33:21the Great Detector's format. For example, Lionel, Barrymore and Nuares did Doctor
- 33:25Kildare on the radio in the early fifties. It wasn't a detective series,
- 33:29but add a good bit of crime, a mystery, and of course Barrymore
- 33:31was one of the biggest names in Hollywood from year. You could also include
- 33:36an episode of Bold Venture Bullgard and MacCall. I'm sure you could find other
- 33:42actors. I suspect you might be introducing some of your listeners to the work
- 33:45they may have heard, but they may have heard of but not seen or
- 33:50heard themselves. This is actually a pretty interesting idea. I'm instrigued by it,
- 33:58and I already have is for shows where I would kind of like it
- 34:02to be something that it has a mystery format, even if the show's not
- 34:09typically a mystery, where there's some sort of mystery in the episode. That's
- 34:15my first two ideas come from Doctor Christian and from Mayor of the Town.
- 34:22But there might be something I could use for Bold Venture too. Many of
- 34:27those scripts written by Fine and Freaking. That's a good suggestion, and it
- 34:34says here's another idea. I imagine you could find shows in which some of
- 34:37our actors are playing very different sort of roles. I don't have examples,
- 34:40but I imagine there were some of Dick Poll and Allen Land shows where their
- 34:45characters were different from what we know from Richard Diamond and Box thirteen. As
- 34:51you know, a lot of radio actors were extremely versatile. This would be
- 34:55could be a way to highlight their versatility. Uh. Actually that's what we
- 35:01do with a lot of the app extras, and we found some very interesting
- 35:07ones with Richard Diamond, I mean with Dick Powell and with Alan Ladd.
- 35:14Both they were of course more movie actors who appeared on the radio, so
- 35:20they those were not as versatile as some of those we found, for example
- 35:23for Jack Webb or for William Johnstone. But it could be a thought to
- 35:31bring some of that material to listeners in a special I know, like with
- 35:39Alan Ladd, we found his guest appearances on Abbott and Costello, and there
- 35:46was one of Dick Powell playing Avengeful fight trainer, and then another one quite
- 35:53a few from his musical comedy days, which are kind of interesting. So
- 35:59uh, those are both good suggestions and we'll see what listener feedback is and
- 36:04what seems like a finalist. But I appreciate you contributing to discussion, and
- 36:10he mentions that thanks for the great work you're doing sorting and appreciating the funding
- 36:15drive. But I'm a creature of having and we'll keep to my end of
- 36:21your schedule for sending a contribution. Well, thanks so much, Murph,
- 36:24And that's part of the reason why we do actually have some extras that we'll
- 36:30give throughout the year now because if to say thank you to all those listeners
- 36:37who contribute throughout the year in addition to the premium side. All right,
- 36:40well, thanks so much for all your feedback, all your comments, and
- 36:45I appreciate particularly those two really good suggestions for Mirph, and I love your
- 36:50suggestions for what we could do play it again. We could definitely do again.
- 36:54I wouldn't want to do it too soon, just because when you're only
- 37:00doing one hundred odds shows every half year, it's best not to look back
- 37:07that way more than once a year. So if you have any other suggestions,
- 37:09love to hear hear it all. Right. We'll send your comments to
- 37:13Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net. Follow us on Twitter Radio Detectives,
- 37:16and be sure and rate the show on iTunes. From Boise, Idaho,
- 37:22this is your host, Adam Graham signing off.
