Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / X and Bluesky Launch Vertical Video Feeds
Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:08shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neurolink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. How is Tik Tok's uncertain
- 0:18future in the United States fueling competition in social
- 0:22media right now? Also, what makes Blue Skies
- 0:26decentralized model a unique approach in video?
- 0:29And can X and Blue Sky truly attract Tik Tok's user base by
- 0:33mimicking its short form video format?
- 0:37Now X has unveiled a new vertical video feed added to
- 0:42their X United States app. It's accessible via a dedicated
- 0:47video tab in the bottom navigation bar and it's very
- 0:50similar to TikTok in some ways. There's a continuous scroll
- 0:54through short form videos similar also to YouTube and
- 0:58Instagram and all the other short form TikTok style video
- 1:02platforms out there right now, and it integrates into Axis
- 1:06video first multimedia approach. They've had live video for a
- 1:10while. They used to have live video a
- 1:12long time ago too. When I was doing my Space news
- 1:15pod channel on YouTube, I specifically went over to
- 1:19Twitter when it was Twitter to do their live video streaming.
- 1:23You couldn't make any money on it.
- 1:25It wasn't like it is now where it's all monetized.
- 1:27You could get things called stars, I believe, and you could
- 1:32earn stars, which then turned into something which we didn't
- 1:35know what it was, but it was kind of like magical fairy dust.
- 1:37Nobody really got any money from it, but you could become popular
- 1:41if you did a bunch of live stuff on Twitter at that point.
- 1:44But you know, because it was all there's always video is called
- 1:47Periscope back then, but now short form video has taken over.
- 1:51TikTok is in the dumps because of the new administration and
- 1:55because of the Supreme Court. But are they going to come back?
- 1:59Well, Apple's App Store has kicked them off.
- 2:03We don't think they're going to go back in the App Store because
- 2:06why would they risk it? Also, Android App Store out of
- 2:11there, too. There's huge, huge penalties if
- 2:16you break the law. And Apple and Google would both.
- 2:21The Google Play Store would both see huge fines for this.
- 2:27So the these new additions to X aim to attract Tik Tok's user
- 2:32base during its period of uncertainty.
- 2:35So even if they could capture some of that millions of
- 2:38followers, that's a plus for X right now.
- 2:42But here's another thing. Blue Sky, the kind of direct
- 2:48competitor to X Basically it's it was what Twitter used to be.
- 2:53Blue Sky now features a vertical video feed under the Explore
- 2:57tab. Users can swipe through training
- 3:00videos, pin feeds to their home screen, or create targeted feeds
- 3:04based on specific hashtags. So when you do that, you don't
- 3:09have to worry about an algorithm.
- 3:11Videos are capped at 59 seconds, so under one minute.
- 3:15And it's built on Blue Skies decentralized AET protocol
- 3:19enabling developer customization.
- 3:22It's customizable and user driver driven video experience
- 3:26tailored to individual preferences as opposed to them
- 3:30feeding you a bunch of stuff like TikTok used to do.
- 3:34Now TikTok faces on scrutiny or scrutiny now and uncertainty in
- 3:37the United States over data security concerns and ties to
- 3:41its Chinese parent company. Excuse me, it's kind of late
- 3:45here. So if I stumble a little bit,
- 3:47that's why Chinese parent company Byte Dance.
- 3:51US ban narrowly avoided in the past, but future restrictions
- 3:56remain possible in the coming months.
- 4:00You know, platforms like X and Blue Sky are responding to Tik
- 4:04Tok's ban by basically mimicking TikTok features that other
- 4:08people might want to use. If you don't think you'll ever
- 4:13be. I mean, the, the App Store is
- 4:15you can't download the apps anymore.
- 4:16You can't download TikTok anymore and if X can get some of
- 4:21that user base because they do something very similar to
- 4:24TikTok, it's not the same. It won't feel the same.
- 4:26And Blue skies doesn't feel the same either.
- 4:29But it is vertical short form video, so some people might move
- 4:33over. Social media giants accelerating
- 4:35their rollout of short form video features increases
- 4:39competition. It's not just TikTok against
- 4:42Instagram anymore YouTube Shorts jumped in X, of course, a little
- 4:47bit late in the blue sky, a little bit late too.
- 4:49But X and blue sky positioning themselves as alternatives for
- 4:53TikTok users that haven't migrated over to YouTube Shorts
- 4:57at this point. But YouTube Shorts is kind of
- 4:59like the graveyard for TikTok videos.
- 5:03So the short perform video tools becoming central to platform
- 5:07development is key for people to move to these platforms.
- 5:12Cap cut is huge on TikTok. What does X offer?
- 5:16They don't offer anything like that.
- 5:18Now that does Blue Sky YouTube has the YouTube app, which you
- 5:21can record in and you know, they don't have anything like cap cut
- 5:25though. So you can record and do some
- 5:27very simple editing. But X and Blue Sky don't have
- 5:32anything compared to what TikTok has.
- 5:34Companies adapting to the potential absence of a major
- 5:38player like TikTok are going to see a short burst in new users
- 5:44when users cannot download TikTok, So we'll see how that
- 5:48works out for them. Blue Sky is built on the AT
- 5:52protocol. The AT protocol, which allows
- 5:53developers to create custom video and content feeds.
- 5:57Independent tools like Grey's Social and Skyfeed are being
- 6:01developed to enhance video capabilities.
- 6:04So not only is this open, unlike Elon Musk's X, which we all
- 6:10love, but you can have independent tools attached
- 6:14directly to an app that you use. You don't have to use Blue Sky
- 6:18because it's on the app protocol.
- 6:22There's more analytics, blending of text and video on Blue Sky
- 6:27and personalized user experiences.
- 6:29You can personalize everything on Blue Sky.
- 6:32So Speaking of decentralization, it fosters innovation and
- 6:37diverse use cases now. So what were we talking about
- 6:41before? The developers can develop on
- 6:44top of the platform, unlike X where you can't because it's
- 6:49owned by Elon Musk. It's a closed garden.
- 6:52You know, it's kind of a kind of a mood point, but also a little
- 6:56bit funny is that Elon Musk is a bastion for free speech and it
- 7:03oh, so I think of software as speech.
- 7:07I'm a web developer by trade. Check out my website,
- 7:10willwalden.com if you need any help or any work done.
- 7:13And also, I believe in open source, I believe in open source
- 7:18software. And I'm sure Twitter and X have
- 7:22used parts of open source software.
- 7:23I believe language is code and code is language.
- 7:28So I don't understand why Elon Musk hasn't opened up X to, I
- 7:33mean, there there's an API, but he charges for it.
- 7:36It costs money. So that's not free speech in my,
- 7:41in my own opinion, if you have to charge for something that's
- 7:45not free anymore. So think about that.
- 7:49So is Blue Sky doing free speech better than X?
- 7:53Just think about it for a second.
- 7:54I don't know. I don't know.
- 7:55It's a, it's an interesting topic to think about though.
- 7:58So integration of vertical video on X though, it's part of the
- 8:03larger multimedia ecosystem that Elon is building.
- 8:07So he's building an everything app.
- 8:09It's similar to Facebook in many regards.
- 8:13Facebook has Reels, Facebook has a news feed, Facebook has
- 8:19favorites, Facebook has live. They've had it for a while.
- 8:22They had payment integrations. And Elon Musk, a lot of people
- 8:27are thinking that he's just copying Zuck, you know, and
- 8:31that's, that's an opinion from some people because Facebook
- 8:34kind of has everything already. And Elon is trying to make
- 8:38something that's similar to Facebook.
- 8:40And he says it's going to be more than that where you can
- 8:43hail an Uber or hail a Tesla, things like that, which is going
- 8:47to be very cool when it does happen.
- 8:51So then let's go back to the integration of this vertical
- 8:55video. And I'm not a Elon heater, by
- 8:56the way. I love, I love the the companies
- 8:59that he's built. So I'm just putting some points
- 9:04about the apps and the way that things are structured just so we
- 9:08can think about this together. It's seamless navigation though
- 9:12on the X app bottom bar, super easy.
- 9:15Tap it real quick. I don't like things in the top
- 9:17bar. I don't know about you or like
- 9:19on a sidebar or anything like that in your apps.
- 9:21Put it at the bottom where my thumbs already at because if I
- 9:23have to reach over, I have a kind of, I have a bigger phone
- 9:27with iPhone Pro Max and it's like kind of a big phone.
- 9:31So if I have to reach like up, the phone gets a little floppy
- 9:35in my hand. So at the bottom is perfect spot
- 9:37for that. It's focused on simplicity.
- 9:40The the interface is very simple.
- 9:43So it's really easy to pick up and use.
- 9:46And it's going to be a comprehensive content platform
- 9:51in the future. Because of vertical video, we
- 9:53had horizontal video. You can upload as long a video
- 9:57as you want to as long as you pay for it.
- 10:00So think about that too. If you have to pay to speak
- 10:04freely through video on a platform, is that still free
- 10:09speech platform? I just like to think about these
- 10:12things sometimes I like to think about them, but I want you to
- 10:15think about them too. So that's why I bring them up.
- 10:17It's not about hate, not I'm not hating on anybody.
- 10:21But so far, they both had a positive reaction.
- 10:23Many users appreciate the added functionality and the TikTok
- 10:27like experience on X Suggestions for improvement from a bunch of
- 10:31users. Extended video length limits and
- 10:34editing features. That's one of the big ones.
- 10:36The editing features, TikTok has a lot of those which these other
- 10:40apps don't have yet. But this is version A1.
- 10:45So in the near future, probably going to get some extended video
- 10:50lengths maybe and some TikTok like editing features as well.
- 10:55So let me know if you've used these app in the comments on
- 10:58whatever podcast platform that you're listening on right now.
- 11:01I'd like to hear what you think about it.
- 11:03I'm a big proponent of XI love free speech.
- 11:06I think it's a great thing. I love short form video.
- 11:09You'll find me some mornings when I wake up earlier than the
- 11:12wife. Then I'm just scrolling through
- 11:14Tiktok or skipping through some YouTube Shorts and you'll hear
- 11:18me talk about them here and there.
- 11:21So I'm a huge proponent of short form video and I can't wait to
- 11:25dig into all the short form video that I can find on X and
- 11:29also Blue Sky and check out our Discord.
- 11:32If you want some other information, we can continue
- 11:35this conversation over there and there's a link in the show notes
- 11:39for you. Also, I'm going to leave a link
