- 0:00What's up, everybody? We are live.
- 0:02You are live. You are looking live.
- 0:04Charlie Marlow here talking about a crazy, crazy weekend of
- 0:09college football. Not just the games, of course.
- 0:13The biggest news, James Franklin fired.
- 0:18You're fired. You're fired at Penn State.
- 0:22This dude, James Franklin, they get to the Final Four last year,
- 0:28play couple plays, whatever it is.
- 0:30They're they're playing Notre Dame from being in the College
- 0:33Football Playoff national championship game and James
- 0:37Franklin fired. What's he getting, 49 million,
- 0:4250 million, whatever, whatever the number is, whatever that
- 0:45buyout number is, James Franklin being told, see you later, see
- 0:51you, Jimmy, see you, James, take your 50, schmill.
- 0:55Whatever it is, we're going to move on without you.
- 0:58And that happened Sunday. Just a crazy, crazy story.
- 1:03Penn State losing to Northwestern.
- 1:06And when you see all the pictures and video of James
- 1:09Franklin hugging his players after the game, you just got to
- 1:14wonder if he knew it was coming. So when I saw the news Saturday,
- 1:18I was kind of shocked. Maybe I shouldn't have been just
- 1:22for it to happen that fast. And I always wonder too, like,
- 1:26how are those calls made? If you're going to sign a check
- 1:30for $50 million, not all at once, but still, if you're going
- 1:33to pay a coach $50,000,000 to leave, does the big oil tycoon
- 1:37booster call somebody up and go, hey, let's make the move, I'll
- 1:41pay, I'll pay half. It's a terrible accent.
- 1:44And also it's Pennsylvania, probably don't have an accent.
- 1:47I don't know where the money comes from.
- 1:49Maybe Tech, whatever it is. When I say Tech, not Georgia
- 1:51Tech, I mean like Tech AI. Maybe it's AI money, who knows.
- 1:57But James Franklin, 53 years young, He was at Penn State
- 2:02longer than I thought. Since 2014, a record of 104 and
- 2:0745 with the Nittany Lions, 64 and 36 in the Big 10.
- 2:15Remember, he was at Vanderbilt before that, helped turn
- 2:19Vanderbilt into a top 25 team for two years.
- 2:23And look at Penn State the last three seasons, finishing fifth
- 2:28in the polls last year, 13th the year before, 7th the year before
- 2:34that. As I'm looking at his Wikipedia,
- 2:37I see they finished ranked seven of his years in the top 10, five
- 2:43of his years. But look, Penn State, they think
- 2:49they can do better. It's hard to argue with that.
- 2:53Penn State's a powerhouse. Is it fair to call it a?
- 2:56Is it a blue blood? I mean, it's not Ohio State,
- 2:59it's not Alabama. Obviously, Joe Paterno took it
- 3:03to a different level, I think in the Big 10.
- 3:08I know Michigan's kind of down this year, but Big 10
- 3:11traditionally, always Ohio State, Michigan.
- 3:13I always looked at Penn State. Just a tick below.
- 3:16Now you have Oregon in there. Whatever happens with USCUSC is
- 3:21not obviously where they were during the Pete Carroll era.
- 3:26I just wonder though, I just wonder if if Penn State is
- 3:31really that great of a job. It's a very, very good job,
- 3:34don't get me wrong. I think it's one tick below a
- 3:38blue blood. And again, that's no disrespect
- 3:41whatsoever. Can they find a better coach to
- 3:44take them to the promised land? I feel like maybe they already
- 3:48know they can. Look, I saw that comment from
- 3:50Matt Rule. Matt Rule obviously coaches
- 3:54Nebraska. When you look at Matt Rule
- 3:57turning programs around, like look at his overall record in
- 4:02college football, it's not that great.
- 4:05He was bad in the NFL with Carolina, but his overall record
- 4:09in college is not that great because he's turned programs
- 4:12around, Turned around Temple and then left and went to Baylor,
- 4:15Turned around Baylor, goes to the NFL, comes to Nebraska.
- 4:20In the process of turning Nebraska around.
- 4:23I believe Nebraska is five and one.
- 4:26Yes, Nebraska right now, five and one ranked 25th in the AP
- 4:33poll. They are technically 27th.
- 4:36They're receiving votes in the coaches poll.
- 4:41But I bring that up because Matt Rule is a guy who went to Penn
- 4:44State. He was asked about it.
- 4:46He said I love Penn State, met his wife there.
- 4:49He didn't say no. He said he wants to build
- 4:51Nebraska up. He surely didn't say no, though.
- 4:55To me, that's probably your guy. You go after Matt Rule.
- 4:59Does Matt Rule leave for his alma mater?
- 5:02I think he would. And I think people, even at
- 5:05Nebraska, they'd be pissed about it.
- 5:07Nebraska, you're no longer a blue blood either.
- 5:10Maybe you could become one again, but you're not right now.
- 5:13I think even, look, I know college football fans are crazy.
- 5:17I think even if you're a reasonable person, you'd
- 5:20understand why Matt Rule would feel the calling to go to his
- 5:24alma mater, Penn State. There's probably very few jobs
- 5:27Matt Rule leaves Nebraska for. Penn State is most likely one of
- 5:33them. We'll see what happens there.
- 5:36James Franklin, you know, all the numbers, could never win the
- 5:39big one. Terrible record versus top five,
- 5:43top ten, top 25, whatever it is. I think I saw Ohio State, he was
- 5:48one in 10 versus Ohio State. And that's what I'm saying.
- 5:52I've never really looked at Penn State.
- 5:55And I'm, I'm an Ohio State fan. I think most people know that.
- 5:57But I never really looked at Penn State as a big game.
- 6:01And I don't mean that disrespectfully.
- 6:04A lot of those years, Penn State was ranked very high.
- 6:07Just as an Ohio State fan, you're judged by Michigan and
- 6:11national championships. That's just the way it is now.
- 6:15In some years, you have schools come in.
- 6:17Penn State's really good. I mean, look at Indiana.
- 6:20We're going to talk about Indiana.
- 6:21Obviously the Big 10 is bigger now you have Oregon and all
- 6:24that. We'll get to it.
- 6:26But I, I can't be really mad at Penn State.
- 6:29They, they probably said, look, we were #2 in the country, we
- 6:32thought it was our year. They play a close game versus
- 6:36Oregon, but then they go and they lose 2 more.
- 6:41You lose against Northwestern. Is this guy, is this the guy
- 6:47that can ever take us over the hump, over the mountaintop?
- 6:54And I think it's fair to say that after whatever it is 1112
- 6:58seasons, Penn State said, you know what, James?
- 7:02Nothing personal. You're not the guy.
- 7:04We need someone else. You you've taken us very far.
- 7:08You've taken us to the final Four, top 10, whatever it is, we
- 7:12need to hire the guy that can take us to the College Football
- 7:16Playoff national championship game and win the national
- 7:19championship. So yeah, Penn State, they were
- 7:23three and O, they lose to Oregon and double OT.
- 7:28Think about that couple 3 weeks ago, they're number two, number
- 7:33three in the country, whatever it is, Oregon double OT in front
- 7:39of 111,000 people. Then you lose at UCLA 4237, you
- 7:44lose to frickin Northwestern at home and see you later.
- 7:50Take your $50 million. Nice to know you.
- 7:54They got Iowa, they got Ohio State at Ohio State coming up
- 7:57here in a couple of 2-3 weeks. So there you go.
- 8:02Penn State, though, 3 losses, you're not going to make the
- 8:04College Football Playoff. The season is essentially over.
- 8:09Moving on to who you're going to hire as your head coach, Matt
- 8:12Rule, I think is going to be the guy.
- 8:15Kurt Zignetti. If you're Kurt Zignetti, why
- 8:17would you leave Indiana at this point?
- 8:19And we'll talk about that. We'll talk about Kurt Zignetti
- 8:23in Indiana. Obviously with the huge
- 8:25statement win over Oregon, Jeff Castle says Afternoon, Charlie.
- 8:32Good afternoon, Jeff. Thank you for watching the live
- 8:36stream. I appreciate you and your other
- 8:38buddy watching right now. We're building this channel up,
- 8:41OK? We're building up.
- 8:43Podcasted on Kenny Wallace Media as well.
- 8:47OK, I did watch a good amount of college football on Saturday.
- 8:52I made a video. I was joking.
- 8:53I hope people know I was joking because my kids had soccer.
- 8:57The 11 AM window Central time was the window for me.
- 9:01Ohio State at Illinois ranked versus ranked Alabama.
- 9:06Alabama at Mizzou. I live here in Saint Louis.
- 9:10Ranked versus ranked 11 AM window.
- 9:14But guess what my my son had soccer at 10:30, ends at 11:15.
- 9:19Don't get home till 11:30. Then my daughter had a soccer
- 9:22game at 2:00, so I had to leave the house at 1:30.
- 9:27That gave me a nice two hour window to watch kind of the the
- 9:32second and third quarters of those games.
- 9:35I have to say, as a Buckeye fan, I was on that game.
- 9:39I never really felt like Ohio State was ever going to lose
- 9:42that game, so I was more locked into Mizzou and Alabama.
- 9:47Ohio State, they did what they do versus Illinois.
- 9:52Illinois kept it relatively close in terms of the spread.
- 9:56Whatever the final score was, I don't even remember something
- 9:58like what was it, 34 to 34 to 16?
- 10:03Buckeyes, it was 34 to 16. I believe that was a 14 1/2
- 10:08point spread. Ohio State looks like the class
- 10:12of the country again. Again, they look really, really
- 10:16good. And also you're seeing some
- 10:19other teams falling off a bit like in Oregon that you thought
- 10:22might be elite. What teams are actually elite?
- 10:25Think it's fair to say the Buckeyes, Miami, I never would
- 10:29have said Indiana until this weekend.
- 10:32You got to give them credit. And then I mean, who in the
- 10:34SECANM, Ole Miss, Alabama, We shall see.
- 10:39Texas Tech. I just saw Texas Tech.
- 10:42Did I read that right that they're spending like $28
- 10:44million on NIL? Texas Tech ranked 7th, 6 and O
- 10:49on the season. They're 8th in the coaches pole.
- 10:53So OK, so yeah, Ohio State look and I and I like Illinois, a lot
- 10:59of Illinois fans here in in Saint Louis.
- 11:02Illinois is not a big game for Ohio State, even when they're
- 11:05ranked like they were. I never thought Ohio State was
- 11:08going to lose that game. I was watching.
- 11:10It was like 10 zip, whatever the score was.
- 11:13Was it 20 to 3 at half something like that?
- 11:16I can't even remember, so I focus more on Alabama, Mizzou.
- 11:21I really wanted Mizzou to beat Alabama.
- 11:24This was just one of those years for Mizzou where it looked like
- 11:27everything was going great. You got a good team, you're at
- 11:30home. Maybe Bama's not as great as in
- 11:33years past. They obviously lost to Florida
- 11:35State earlier in the year. They've turned things around
- 11:38since then and Mizzou played tough.
- 11:41They played them very, very tough.
- 11:43They lose by three, so not embarrassing at all.
- 11:46I think Mizzou is deserving of of whatever ranking.
- 11:49They are right around 15 or so. I know they dropped a little
- 11:52bit, probably really shouldn't have dropped if you think about
- 11:55it. So Mizzou is 16.
- 11:58In the AP poll, they dropped two spots.
- 12:00Mizzou is 16. In the coaches poll, they
- 12:02dropped two spots. So they were 14th, which is
- 12:06fair. I guess if you're going to drop
- 12:08them, whatever, not a huge deal, but you do lose by three points
- 12:12to the number 8 team in the country, Alabama, which is now
- 12:15the number six team. So Mizzou being around #15 feels
- 12:21fair to me. So Mizzou, Eli Drinkwitz, by the
- 12:26way, this kind of gets us back to the coaching talk.
- 12:30Eli Drinkwitz and anybody else, lot of other people in Eli
- 12:35Drinkwitz's tier of coaches and that's a good tier to be in.
- 12:39Eli Drinkwood. I'm, I'm saying he's not, he's
- 12:41not Ryan Day, he's not Kirby Smart, but he's, he's below them
- 12:44a little bit, but still really, really good.
- 12:47Makes a lot of money at Mizzou. I believe it's 9,000,000 bucks.
- 12:50But all those dudes are going to get nice raises or they're going
- 12:54to leave. I'm not saying Eli Drinkwood is
- 12:56going to leave, but there's lots of openings and when you have
- 13:00the coaching carousel and Penn State opens and I mean, who else
- 13:05there's, there's so many openings going to probably be
- 13:09more openings with Florida. And then you just start to see
- 13:14coaches jump in here, coaches jump in there and all of them
- 13:18are going to leverage those openings to a nice raise at
- 13:21their school. Like Eli Drink, what's at the
- 13:24zoo or they could go somewhere else, who knows?
- 13:27But I think you're going to have a lot of interesting coaching
- 13:33movement. Let's see.
- 13:35Let me just let me look this up real quick.
- 13:38How many college football coaches have been fired already
- 13:45have been fired this season? What do we got?
- 13:49I couldn't remember off the top of my head.
- 13:50So, OK. James Franklin, we mentioned
- 13:53that. Brett Pry, Virginia Tech.
- 13:55That's a damn good job. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State.
- 13:59It's a damn good job. Sam Pittman, Arkansas.
- 14:02Damn good job. Trent Bray, Oregon State, Pretty
- 14:06good job. Deshawn Foster, UCLA.
- 14:09Dang, good job. Has Billy Napier already been
- 14:13fired? Did I miss that?
- 14:17Am I dumb? Has he already been fired?
- 14:21This is going to give me no credibility.
- 14:26OK, I'm seeing all these articles.
- 14:31Florida expected to fire head coach Billy Napier in the near
- 14:35future. I was like, did I miss that?
- 14:38This is where you can't really trust AI.
- 14:41That was the AI overview. So now I feel like I need to
- 14:44check all of those. But obviously Franklin, yes,
- 14:48Gundy, yes, Pittman, I don't know about Bray.
- 14:51This is where you can't trust. AII didn't I didn't think Billy
- 14:55Napier had been fired yet, but that's probably common.
- 14:58So just think about that. Those are some big time
- 15:00openings, some big time openings.
- 15:02There's going to be a lot of coaching movement.
- 15:04A lot of coaching movement, OK. I mean, game ball of the week,
- 15:09Kurt Zignetti and Indiana. I always thought Indiana was
- 15:15kind of a paper tiger the last couple years.
- 15:17Also, they play Ohio State played them pretty close last
- 15:20year. Never thought they were going to
- 15:22beat Ohio State. Indiana's one of those teams
- 15:25where, and again, I'm, I'm saying this as an Ohio State
- 15:28fan, I look this up. Ohio State hasn't lost Indiana
- 15:32since 1988. We're we're pushing 40 years, 37
- 15:37years, whatever that is. But that's my point.
- 15:40Indiana's a nice program, has had some nice seasons.
- 15:44You had 2020 COVID with Michael Pennix.
- 15:47They're pretty Dang good. And I just thought last year
- 15:50they're kind of a nice story, probably overrated in my
- 15:52opinion. And they get beat by Ohio State.
- 15:56They get beat by Notre Dame. Pretty good losses though.
- 15:59I thought they were kind of similar this year, but Dang, you
- 16:03go into Oregon. I think most people thought
- 16:06Oregon was one of the elite teams in the country.
- 16:10Maybe they still are. Look, Ohio State last year they
- 16:13lost early to Oregon. They lost a bad loss to Michigan
- 16:17and still won the national championship.
- 16:19So I'm not going to. I'm not going to write off any
- 16:21team for one loss. I thought Oregon was legit and
- 16:26Indiana went to their house and didn't just barely beat them,
- 16:32beaten by 10 points. That was an absolute statement
- 16:37to everybody, to the college football world, that we IU, we
- 16:42are for real. And a lot of people are making
- 16:45fun of Kurt Zignetti with Google me and all that.
- 16:47Well, yeah, Google him, Google him.
- 16:50He wins. He wins everywhere he goes.
- 16:53Had a great season last year and made the statement.
- 16:58I think it's fair to say the statement so far.
- 17:00Now you can say Florida, Alabama, excuse me, Florida
- 17:03State, Alabama, but but Indiana winning at Oregon.
- 17:06I think the statement certainly of the weekend and the statement
- 17:10of the season. In my opinion, although I can't
- 17:13really remember everything because I don't have the
- 17:16greatest memory, but it is what it is.
- 17:19OK, a lot of talk. I like to kind of follow the
- 17:22college football narratives. Is there an SEC bias with the
- 17:26polls? Are some of these Big 10 schools
- 17:29not getting the love they deserve?
- 17:31You know, I'm kind of a Big 10 honk, but I try to be fair,
- 17:34right? And a lot of people are talking
- 17:37about Washington. I agree with that one.
- 17:40I did watch a lot of the Washington Ohio State game.
- 17:43Washington is a Dang good team. Washington is essentially 28th
- 17:49in the country in the AP poll. Same with the coaches poll.
- 17:54You got some Big 10 teams right at the end there.
- 17:56AP poll, you got Nebraska 25. Then you got Illinois receiving
- 18:00votes, Michigan receiving votes, Washington receiving votes.
- 18:04And in the coaches poll, Illinois 25th, Michigan,
- 18:06Nebraska, Washington receiving votes.
- 18:10So the argument there from the Big 10 is you got all these
- 18:13teams that are whatever what, 5 and 1, four and two.
- 18:18Washington has a really good loss.
- 18:21Now we don't like talking about that, but a good loss to Ohio
- 18:23State. So should those teams be ranked?
- 18:26Is there an SEC bias where if a Big 10 loses to a Big 10 team,
- 18:29you're like, oh, the league sucks, SEC loses to an SEC team.
- 18:34Like oh, it's such a hard fought conference.
- 18:36I do think there's something to that.
- 18:39I do a little bit more so now. I think for years, for about a
- 18:44decade there, the SEC was so good, it was hard to ignore that
- 18:49the SEC was so good that yeah, I I think the the wins and losses
- 18:53meant more in the SEC. You can still make the argument
- 18:58the SEC is probably deeper, I would think than the Big 10 this
- 19:01year. We'll see at the end of the
- 19:03year. But I do think there is some of
- 19:05that where it seems like if a, if a crap or a lower Big 10 team
- 19:10beats a better Big 10 team, it's always like the conference
- 19:13sucks. That happens in the SEC.
- 19:15It's like it's such a great conference top to bottom.
- 19:19I do think there's some truth to that.
- 19:21I don't watch all these games, but just going through let's
- 19:25look at the rankings. Let's look at the rankings.
- 19:28So like Texas, Texas beats Oklahoma, Texas is four and two.
- 19:33I mean, is Texas better than Washington, IL?
- 19:37I mean, I think Texas would beat Illinois.
- 19:39I think Texas would beat Michigan.
- 19:42Washington's a fun team to watch and think about.
- 19:45South, Vanderbilt, Mizzou again, Mizzou.
- 19:49It's hard to go against Mizzou when you're one loss is a
- 19:52three-point loss to Alabama. I think Mizzou deserves to be
- 19:56where they are. Vanderbilt five and one, they
- 20:01lose at Alabama by 16 points. I think that's pretty fair.
- 20:07So I don't know. I don't know if this year that
- 20:11narrative is accurate. Now, if you want to talk about
- 20:15some of these other teams, I'm not going to pretend like I
- 20:17watch Cincinnati, Utah, Memphis, South Florida and all that.
- 20:24Washington's the one team I feel like is more legit than their
- 20:29ranking. And I say that also because I
- 20:31did see Washington in person and they were impressive.
- 20:34They were impressive versus my Buckeyes.
- 20:38I appreciate everybody watching here, all three of you live and
- 20:42then podcasted later at Kenny Wallace Media.
- 20:45Want to tell you about my local sponsors.
- 20:48You see right there in the corner, Triad Bank.
- 20:51Triad Bank celebrating 20 years, 20 years as a bank.
- 20:56I went there last week. Actually it was what, Thursday,
- 21:00I believe Thursday they had their twenty year anniversary
- 21:03party. It was awesome outside,
- 21:05beautiful weather. They had a band.
- 21:07They had salt and smoke BBQ brisket.
- 21:10If you know salt and smoke and our guy Tom, it's top notch.
- 21:13Their brisket is unbelievable. They also had some was it
- 21:18pulled? It was pulled chicken.
- 21:20I had potato salad. Mac and cheese was great.
- 21:22But Triad bank. They had bean bags for the kids
- 21:27playing cornhole. They had little basketballs for
- 21:29the kids. My my kids were there running
- 21:30around having fun. It was a fantastic time.
- 21:33It's relationship based banking. I should 5 koozies they gave.
- 21:37They gave out koozies, regular koozie cans and the skinnier
- 21:42koozie cans for the seltzers. How smart is that?
- 21:45That's triad bank OK relationship based banking.
- 21:48Best thing I ever did for my rental property business.
- 21:50Taking all my commercial loans from a big National Bank that
- 21:53didn't care about me to a local bank in Triad bank.
- 21:57Fantastic. Working with my guy Matthew
- 22:00Tobin. Just opened up a new loan.
- 22:03Bought a rental property this year.
- 22:04Just closed one out. So we're always doing
- 22:06transactions with Triad Bank. I bet you we've done, I don't
- 22:10know. I mean total we've probably done
- 22:1220 transactions if you count some some jumbo kind of bulk
- 22:17loans there. I think we've probably done 20
- 22:18different transactions with Triad Bank.
- 22:21They are top notch. I go to the Frontenac location.
- 22:23They also have one in Creed core relationship based banking.
- 22:27Try a bank, you can't beat it. Also, you got Saint Louis
- 22:30Equipment Saint Louis lawn Care. Saint Louis lawn Care been doing
