Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Are You Overlooking The Most Important Part?
Transcript
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hey, hurdlers, it's me popping in with a new installment
- 0:20Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. Now here's the thing,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and I'd actually be really curious to hear from many
- 0:28Speaker 1: of you about where you're at and how you feel
- 0:32Speaker 1: about the content that's coming on the feed, because obviously
- 0:37Speaker 1: you know the rundown on me. I am a freelance journalist.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I have Hurdle. I work on all things Hurdle, So
- 0:44Speaker 1: whether that's hurdle sessions, the newsletter, the podcast, you get
- 0:49Speaker 1: the gist. And I'm also a big runner, I love cycling,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm active, I live in New York City.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I'm like, what other bullet points should I give you here?
- 1:00Speaker 1: So that means that a lot of the time on
- 1:01Speaker 1: the podcast, I'm going to talk about running and being
- 1:05Speaker 1: active and being an entrepreneur and being a single woman
- 1:07Speaker 1: in her thirties. And I never want to over deliver
- 1:10Speaker 1: in one way or another. I want to make sure
- 1:13Speaker 1: that if you might not fall into one of those buckets,
- 1:16Speaker 1: that you feel happy and satisfied and good coming back
- 1:21Speaker 1: to Hurdle on the regular. So this week I'm going
- 1:25Speaker 1: to talk a little bit about running again. And the
- 1:27Speaker 1: thing is when I talk about running when it comes
- 1:31Speaker 1: to either the solo episodes or these five minute Fridays,
- 1:34Speaker 1: is that I had just found that the themes and
- 1:37Speaker 1: the things that I learn about life and myself when
- 1:41Speaker 1: it comes to the run, it really changes me. It
- 1:46Speaker 1: really makes a big impact. And so for five Minute
- 1:49Speaker 1: Friday this week, I want to talk to you about
- 1:52Speaker 1: something that has everything to do with the run and
- 1:55Speaker 1: nothing to do with the run, and.
- 1:56Speaker 2: That's the moments before. It's so funny.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So I live at the bottom of a hill and
- 2:03Speaker 1: I typically, as part of my warm up, walk up
- 2:07Speaker 1: the hill, because honestly, who wants to start their run
- 2:10Speaker 1: going up a hill? I think no one. And so
- 2:12Speaker 1: I walk up the hill, I get to the top,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and I never get to the top and immediately start running.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I get to the top, and I have those few
- 2:21Speaker 1: moments before the effort begins. And I would argue that
- 2:27Speaker 1: those moments before the run actually begins, those are the
- 2:31Speaker 1: most important moments. I mean, think about how you feel
- 2:36Speaker 1: before you go to do something that scares you. It's
- 2:40Speaker 1: I mean again, you're scared, you're worried, you might have
- 2:44Speaker 1: your reservations about whatever task is at hand, and that
- 2:49Speaker 1: anxiety that like little bit of excitement. It's kind of
- 2:55Speaker 1: a rush, right these days when it's like hat and
- 3:00Speaker 1: human and it feels heavy a lot of the time,
- 3:03Speaker 1: like the run is actually the last thing that I
- 3:07Speaker 1: really really want to do, But I get out there
- 3:09Speaker 1: because I know that after it's done, I'm going to
- 3:11Speaker 1: be so so satisfied. And so the moments though before
- 3:18Speaker 1: the run, I would argue that these are the most
- 3:20Speaker 1: important moments because this is like your opportunity to commit.
- 3:25Speaker 1: This is your opportunity to show up for yourself and
- 3:28Speaker 1: to prove to yourself that you are worthy of this
- 3:32Speaker 1: investment and you that you are worthy of this dedicated time.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Right because once you get going on the run, even
- 3:40Speaker 1: if it doesn't feel that good, again, in these summer conditions,
- 3:43Speaker 1: it might not feel that good, it's okay because you're
- 3:47Speaker 1: already going. I can count very few times, although there
- 3:51Speaker 1: are times that it happens that I totally bail out
- 3:55Speaker 1: on a run. I would say, on average, in a
- 3:57Speaker 1: month with all of the yucky days included, maybe I
- 4:01Speaker 1: bail out twice.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And it's okay to bail out. You know, it happens.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Sometimes You've just gotta listen But what I will say
- 4:11Speaker 1: is that in the moments before the run, when you
- 4:13Speaker 1: make that big decision, like taking that deep breath, you
- 4:18Speaker 1: hype yourself up and you say, all right, I'm gonna
- 4:22Speaker 1: do this, that is really frickin' important. And that is
- 4:28Speaker 1: the stuff that encourages you right and reminds you that
- 4:33Speaker 1: you are capable to show up everywhere else, that you
- 4:36Speaker 1: are capable to just keep moving forward, that you get
- 4:41Speaker 1: to make that powerful decision. And so that was just
- 4:45Speaker 1: something I was thinking about this week that I wanted
- 4:47Speaker 1: to share with you. My prompt for you guys this week,
- 4:52Speaker 1: what was the last time you had to psych yourself
- 4:56Speaker 1: up to do something?
- 4:57Speaker 2: Again?
- 4:58Speaker 1: What was the last time you had to psych yourself
- 5:02Speaker 1: up to do something? And how did you feel once
- 5:06Speaker 1: that big to do was done? Highlights of the week.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Links to all of these highlights can be found in
- 5:13Speaker 1: the link with the description to this episode. First up,
- 5:17Speaker 1: a watch Friends, a new series from my friend Nick Dio.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Nick's a close friend of mine and he's launched a
- 5:24Speaker 1: new series on his Instagram called Friends, and in it,
- 5:28Speaker 1: he's sharing his platform with people he believes that are
- 5:31Speaker 1: building amazing things. And this can be anything from companies, communities, apps,
- 5:37Speaker 1: even buildings, which I know sounds a little bit crazy
- 5:39Speaker 1: but awesome. Sure, seeing someone else on someone else's feed,
- 5:44Speaker 1: that's kind of a weird way to put that. But
- 5:46Speaker 1: it can be a little bit like you're unsure about
- 5:48Speaker 1: what's going on. But I really really dig this. So far,
- 5:52Speaker 1: he has had a meditation coach and the founder of
- 5:55Speaker 1: an app called Gratitude Plus on the feed and upcoming
- 5:59Speaker 1: episodes include Colleen Brooks, she's the founder of High Court,
- 6:02Speaker 1: which is a new membership leisure club in Tribeca. Benjamin Goldman,
- 6:07Speaker 1: he's the head chef at the vegan restaurant Planta in
- 6:10Speaker 1: South Beach. And Ty Richards, who is a cannabis athlete
- 6:14Speaker 1: that's a fun thing and a founder of a cannabis
- 6:16Speaker 1: focused run club called Rage and Release. Next up, the
- 6:21Speaker 1: Perfect Bike Shorts. I was asking about this on Instagram
- 6:24Speaker 1: this week. I got tons of responses. A few of
- 6:27Speaker 1: the ones that I will highlight again links in the
- 6:29Speaker 1: show notes Lulemon a Line six inch they just released it.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I bought it myself this week. Obsessed athleta Elation short,
- 6:39Speaker 1: the under Armour Meridian short, and the Nike one Bike short.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I just envision many of you taking notes on your
- 6:46Speaker 1: iPhone right now. A good listen for you this week
- 6:50Speaker 1: catching up with Chris Heisler. He's on the alley on
- 6:53Speaker 1: the Run Show. The first thing I have to say
- 6:55Speaker 1: about this is wow. I have known Chris for a
- 6:58Speaker 1: while now. We both were in the run industry in
- 7:01Speaker 1: some capacity, him as the one School Will Run Weston
- 7:05Speaker 1: at Concierge and me as a fitness journalist. We met
- 7:08Speaker 1: years ago and this week he is on the alley
- 7:11Speaker 1: on the Run Show. Now you know me, you know
- 7:13Speaker 1: I love Ali Feller. She has been a guest on
- 7:16Speaker 1: Hurdle before and for her podcast. This week she is
- 7:20Speaker 1: chatting with Chris and their conversation is a must must listen.
- 7:26Speaker 1: He opens up for the first time about his long
- 7:29Speaker 1: battle with alcoholism, and he talks about getting sober and
- 7:33Speaker 1: is just his honesty and it's so vulnerable, and it's
- 7:37Speaker 1: just a really powerful, powerful conversation that I know, I
- 7:43Speaker 1: know my audience could really really benefit from. Another slightly
- 7:47Speaker 1: somber note. Donate this week to the Rest Up Tommy
- 7:50Speaker 1: We'll see you soon. Go fund me. Tommy Ribs. He's
- 7:54Speaker 1: a well known nut trailer runner and he was also
- 7:56Speaker 1: admitted to the ICU several weeks ago with like respiratory issues.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Although he's still undiagnosed, so Rivers has sustained significant damage
- 8:06Speaker 1: to his lungs. He spent the last few days sedated
- 8:09Speaker 1: and on a ventilator, And if you have the means,
- 8:13Speaker 1: definitely consider donating to his family. I know he has
- 8:15Speaker 1: a loving wife, three girls, and I'm sure his family
- 8:19Speaker 1: can use all of the help on the burden of
- 8:21Speaker 1: ongoing hospital bills. And last but not least, this week,
- 8:26Speaker 1: I am highlighting a giveaway of a Whoop plus a
- 8:29Speaker 1: six month membership. As you know, last week I hosted
- 8:33Speaker 1: another giveaway for the premiere of season three, and the winner, Haley,
- 8:37Speaker 1: graciously offered to split up her winnings and donate the
- 8:40Speaker 1: Whoop to another lucky hurdler. So if you don't know
- 8:44Speaker 1: about whoop, whoop is a wrist worn heart rate monitor.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I wear mine religiously to track things like stream and
- 8:51Speaker 1: sleep and recovery. Especially during the pandemic. I've been monitoring
- 8:55Speaker 1: my respiratory rate like crazy, and so I I know
- 9:00Speaker 1: that if you have not tried the Whoop yet, you
- 9:04Speaker 1: too would love it. Tender to win head on over
- 9:08Speaker 1: to the Weekly Hurdle Newsletter and enter your answer in
- 9:13Speaker 1: the comments section to this week's prompt again, what was
- 9:17Speaker 1: the last time you had to psych yourself up to
- 9:20Speaker 1: do something? And how did it feel once that big
- 9:23Speaker 1: to do was done. I'll be announcing the winner of
- 9:27Speaker 1: this giveaway and next week's installment of the Weekly Hurdle Newsletter,
- 9:31Speaker 1: so please, if you haven't subscribed to that just yet,
- 9:34Speaker 1: make sure to get in there and do that. And
- 9:38Speaker 1: I think that's it for now. Thanks so much as
- 9:40Speaker 1: always for everyone's support of the pod this week. I
- 9:44Speaker 1: got so much outrageous, awesome feedback on Jess Simms and
- 9:48Speaker 1: her positive outlook and man, she is such a delight
- 9:52Speaker 1: One last thank you as well to everyone that attended
- 9:55Speaker 1: the Intro to Freelance Writing Hurdle session this week. You
- 9:59Speaker 1: really just filled up my cup. I'll be honest, this
- 10:01Speaker 1: is the first time in a long time that I
- 10:03Speaker 1: just feel like I'm me again, productive and happy and
- 10:07Speaker 1: giving back to my community and it really just makes
- 10:11Speaker 1: me feel whole. So thank you for that. If you
- 10:14Speaker 1: want to check out either of the past hurdle sessions
- 10:17Speaker 1: from the last two weeks Intro to Podcasting, Intro to
- 10:20Speaker 1: freelance writing. They're both up on the Hurdle website right now,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and upcoming in August is how to start and stay running,
- 10:27Speaker 1: as well as how to turn your side hustle into
