A related rite is the Libera. In the tradition described here, the Libera is a sung service for the dead led by a pè savann, a lay ritual specialist, rather than by an ordained priest. Unlike a church Mass, it may be conducted at the cemetery beside the deceased’s tomb or on the family bitasyon. The service is generally followed by prayers, offerings, or other rites determined by the family’s règleman—its inherited ritual order, lineage customs, and established practices.
