- 0:00Speaker 1: And we're heading on down to Catherine because joining me
- 0:02Speaker 1: on the line right now is Trent to with good morning, Trent.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Katie, Hey doing good mate? How are you trucking along? Beautiful?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Twenty one degrees down here in Captain this morning, whisper
- 0:15Speaker 2: of the dry season coming through.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Lucky you. It didn't get that cool here we would
- 0:19Speaker 1: class that as cold. I think up here in Darwarth
- 0:23Speaker 1: we just.
- 0:24Speaker 2: We get excited because you can go outside and you
- 0:26Speaker 2: can feel there's something different in the air. So it's
- 0:29Speaker 2: not far away from those ten degree mornings. Well, we
- 0:32Speaker 2: really look.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Forward to absolutely beautiful. I love it when the weather
- 0:36Speaker 1: does start to cool down. Trent. How have things been
- 0:39Speaker 1: going in Catherine.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, we've been kicking along good. It's starting to get busy.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Starting to see a lot of tourists on the road already,
- 0:47Speaker 2: which is really exciting. The car parking you're locally starting
- 0:51Speaker 2: to fill up the vands and out of state number plates,
- 0:53Speaker 2: so there's things in wheels are in motion for the
- 0:56Speaker 2: good old dry season on floor. So yeah, definitely things
- 0:59Speaker 2: are happening. And as far as the late night activities
- 1:04Speaker 2: by a few locals, it has quieted down. It's flared
- 1:08Speaker 2: up in the last day or so, but apart from
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's actually been reasonably okay. As I touched a piece
- 1:13Speaker 2: of wood here, right, Yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 1: That's well, that is good to hear. What do you
- 1:17Speaker 1: mean it's flared up the last twenty four hours or
- 1:19Speaker 1: so though, What's happened.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Even just locally? So I just came to work yesterday
- 1:23Speaker 2: morning and motorbike shop next door to me had a
- 1:27Speaker 2: brick thrown through their window, and then when I looked
- 1:30Speaker 2: on my cameras, they tried to smash my windows as well.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So that was the only sort of you know, flare
- 1:36Speaker 2: up that I was sort of referring to wash. We
- 1:39Speaker 2: just had a few. They must have all been under twelve,
- 1:42Speaker 2: I reckon. They were young bucks and they were just
- 1:44Speaker 2: out just menacing.
- 1:46Speaker 1: It's so frustrating, you hate like I've got you know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: my kids are nine and eleven, and I just can't
- 1:51Speaker 1: imagine them being out on the street, you know, throwing
- 1:53Speaker 1: bricks at somebody's business.
- 1:56Speaker 2: No exactly. It just makes you shake your head and
- 1:58Speaker 2: wonder where the responsible adult is, where the guardians bough
- 2:01Speaker 2: and how they keep getting dropped home to air quote
- 2:05Speaker 2: responsible adult?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, you spot on and that's a question that you
- 2:09Speaker 1: know that we've had raised with us quite a few times.
- 2:11Speaker 1: This week, we had Alarakia Elder Helen Secretary on the show,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and she had said, you know, she'd said that that
- 2:19Speaker 1: that you've got to take responsibility for the kids, and
- 2:21Speaker 1: that parents need to make sure that they are taking
- 2:23Speaker 1: responsibility for the kids, and you shouldn't have to worry
- 2:26Speaker 1: about people throwing bricks at your shop, you know, in
- 2:31Speaker 1: the late hours of the night.
- 2:33Speaker 2: No, definitely not. I heard that interview and everything that
- 2:36Speaker 2: was said on I just put in't agree more is
- 2:37Speaker 2: that it was such a positive a positive way to
- 2:40Speaker 2: look at it. So yeah, yeah, definitely something needs to happen,
- 2:44Speaker 2: that's for sure.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Hey, there was a lot of love for Helen, there
- 2:47Speaker 1: is no doubt about that. Hey, let me ask you.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I know that last time you and I spoke, we'd
- 2:53Speaker 1: spoken a bit about that trailer that you were you
- 2:55Speaker 1: know that you were getting organized to go out and
- 2:57Speaker 1: help people after they had been victims of crime, maybe
- 3:00Speaker 1: to just sort of help them secure the premises and
- 3:03Speaker 1: that kind of thing. Have you got that up and
- 3:05Speaker 1: running yet or how's that all going.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah? So the trailer basically it was donated to us.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I dropped it off to a local fabricator guy in town,
- 3:15Speaker 2: Brad Buckley, and I just told him to go over
- 3:17Speaker 2: it and have a look at it, tell me what
- 3:19Speaker 2: you think. Within I don't know, two or three hours,
- 3:23Speaker 2: he sent me a message of a frame on the
- 3:25Speaker 2: ground being built from the ground up and he said,
- 3:28Speaker 2: I think this is a better way, mate. So he's
- 3:30Speaker 2: actually built a whole brand new trailer for this out
- 3:33Speaker 2: of his own time, his own money, and which was
- 3:37Speaker 2: just beyond what I ever expected. A legend from there
- 3:40Speaker 2: we've had. Ah, he's an absolute legend. But yeah, he
- 3:43Speaker 2: he just went look that. You know, by the time
- 3:46Speaker 2: I replaced this, replace that, and you know, he built
- 3:49Speaker 2: a trailer in two days for me and it was
- 3:50Speaker 2: up and running. We've got a tan blastard. It's currently
- 3:54Speaker 2: being painted. The problem I have, Katie, Yeah, it's not
- 3:58Speaker 2: a problem. It's a good issue is every time I
- 4:00Speaker 2: take it to someone, they want to make this thing
- 4:02Speaker 2: the biggest and best thing it can be. So every
- 4:05Speaker 2: time it goes to someone, they want to do their
- 4:07Speaker 2: best absolute you know, to this trailer and put little
- 4:11Speaker 2: Nicki Knaki things on it and make it so it's
- 4:13Speaker 2: really awesome. It is dragging out a bit, but that's
- 4:16Speaker 2: in a good way because it's going to be an
- 4:18Speaker 2: absolute machine once once it's out there repairing windows and stuff.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Everyone wants to pimp it out, make sure that it's
- 4:25Speaker 1: looking the best that it can.
- 4:27Speaker 2: It's pimp your trailer, cash on repair style.
- 4:32Speaker 1: That's Aughtso my love it. But how good is that?
- 4:35Speaker 1: Because I reckon. What it actually shows is that you
- 4:38Speaker 1: know that the community really wants to get behind it
- 4:42Speaker 1: and look after each.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Other absolutely, and that that is Catherine to a t.
- 4:46Speaker 2: You know, I can't describe it any better than using
- 4:49Speaker 2: this trailer as that example. Is that it just snowballs
- 4:52Speaker 2: because people just they love their town and they want
- 4:56Speaker 2: it to be the best that they can be, and
- 4:57Speaker 2: they want to help any way that they can.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, he speaking of helping any way that you can.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I know that there is a victim of crime fundraiser
- 5:06Speaker 1: this weekend, as I understand, talk us through what this
- 5:10Speaker 1: one's all about, Trent.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah, So the Catherine Community Projects Association, which is the
- 5:16Speaker 2: same group of people who are sorting out this repair trailer,
- 5:21Speaker 2: we got whisper of a lady who was assaulted on
- 5:25Speaker 2: her way home from work. She was eaten by about
- 5:27Speaker 2: five or six youths to the point where she's got
- 5:31Speaker 2: to have about five grand or so worth of dental
- 5:34Speaker 2: reconstruction done on her teeth. Now, she is a working
- 5:40Speaker 2: visa lady, so she's not really entitled to the sort
- 5:44Speaker 2: of same medical system that we're so she's had to actually,
- 5:49Speaker 2: you know, this sort of stuff is not covered by
- 5:51Speaker 2: any insurance, is not covered by anything, So she has
- 5:53Speaker 2: to come up with that money. And yeah, once we
- 5:56Speaker 2: heard about that, like, there was no way she works
- 5:58Speaker 2: three jobs already, there was no way we were and
- 6:00Speaker 2: to let her have to work more at ours try
- 6:02Speaker 2: and come up with money to prepare her teeth that
- 6:04Speaker 2: some cowards thought was a good idea to try and
- 6:07Speaker 2: knock out of her mate. I was.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I remember when I'd seen that detail emerge, and I
- 6:13Speaker 1: felt utterly disgusted that that had happened and felt really sad.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And then to hear that this person, that this woman
- 6:21Speaker 1: is juggling three jobs and that she's actually now got
- 6:24Speaker 1: to pay that medical bill herself is it's it is appalling,
- 6:31Speaker 1: but it is a really good thing that the community
- 6:34Speaker 1: is trying to support her.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, and we want it known to these people
- 6:39Speaker 2: that like, we don't accept this behavior and we don't
- 6:42Speaker 2: condone it in the slightest way at all. And if
- 6:44Speaker 2: something like this is going to happen to anyone in
- 6:46Speaker 2: our town, we're going to stand up for them and
- 6:49Speaker 2: we're going to make sure that we put them back
- 6:50Speaker 2: on the right path. Now, with her, we have had
- 6:54Speaker 2: conversations with victims of crime and stuff like that. You
- 6:57Speaker 2: know that all is in the pipework, but it's you know,
- 7:00Speaker 2: so I think she lodged that form about seventeen days
- 7:03Speaker 2: ago for an immediate payment, you know, seventeen days worth,
- 7:06Speaker 2: and it's gone nowhere for her. So, you know, we
- 7:09Speaker 2: have a good agreement with her. She doesn't want money
- 7:11Speaker 2: off us. She wants us to just pay medical bills.
- 7:13Speaker 2: She's not interested in taking people's money. She's absolutely fought
- 7:17Speaker 2: me to the death on this, and I've told her
- 7:19Speaker 2: she doesn't have a choice unfortunately.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yeah, good, good on you.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just such a it's such a Catherine thing.
- 7:27Speaker 2: You know. The outpouring of support has been amazing. You know,
- 7:30Speaker 2: we've got a fully painted buffalo skull here that's going
- 7:34Speaker 2: to be first prize in a raffle We've had the
- 7:37Speaker 2: local member come along and donate the second and third
- 7:41Speaker 2: prizes for the raffle. We've just had people walking in
- 7:45Speaker 2: giving five ten dollars. A doesn't matter, they're not going
- 7:48Speaker 2: to be here on Saturday, but they wanted to contribute
- 7:50Speaker 2: something to the younger lady. How can people the outcry
- 7:53Speaker 2: of support is unbelievable.
- 7:54Speaker 1: How can people donate? Trent? Because I reckon that people
- 7:57Speaker 1: listening this morning, whether they're based in Catherine or whether
- 8:00Speaker 1: they're based here in Darwin or any other part of
- 8:02Speaker 1: the territory that they are actually really going to that
- 8:07Speaker 1: they'll want to make a donation. Is there a way
- 8:09Speaker 1: that they can do that?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Unfortunately, I didn't think it would turn into what it did, Katie,
- 8:15Speaker 2: So I haven't got to go fund me or anything
- 8:17Speaker 2: up and running yet. Unfortunately, that's all right, and get
- 8:20Speaker 2: that I can get that on the way, because I
- 8:22Speaker 2: have had a lot of people say, you know, I
- 8:23Speaker 2: don't live there, but I want to donate to it.
- 8:26Speaker 2: And our association is still in its infancy, so our
- 8:29Speaker 2: bank account's not actually fully open yet, so I don't
- 8:32Speaker 2: even have an account for them to donate to yet.
- 8:34Speaker 2: But maybe i'll fire up a go fund me and
- 8:37Speaker 2: and we can spread that. Let us know, look, just.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Let us know. Yeah, and you know, I think that
- 8:43Speaker 1: it's by the sounds of it, it's going to be
- 8:45Speaker 1: a fantastic fundraiser anyway. So when exactly is it happening
- 8:49Speaker 1: that barbecue and that is it tomorrow?
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah, tomorrow morning, so that other people want to get involved,
- 8:55Speaker 2: come for it. Dropped down to Catherine. It is absolutely
- 8:58Speaker 2: beautiful this time of year. The pop Rocket Cafe is
- 9:01Speaker 2: going to be firing up tomorrow morning, So go and
- 9:03Speaker 2: get a coffee at the Hot Springs and then you
- 9:05Speaker 2: can come down and get a sausage sandwich or a
- 9:07Speaker 2: pulled pork burger from eight point thirty in the morning
- 9:09Speaker 2: at Roden Raffle Tackle World. So we're just on Giles
- 9:12Speaker 2: Street in Catherine. We're going to have the Raffle going.
- 9:16Speaker 2: There's going to be people. I think a lady's coming
- 9:18Speaker 2: to give away free fairy floss to the kid. There's
- 9:21Speaker 2: just yeah, there's going to be a great little buzz
- 9:23Speaker 2: down here. And so if you feel like coming for
- 9:25Speaker 2: a drive and you want to contribute to come down
- 9:27Speaker 2: and check out cakem and take it out mate.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Hang on a second, you go full gourmet for your barbecues.
- 9:32Speaker 1: By the sounds of a shol we don't muck around.
- 9:35Speaker 2: We don't muck around. Yeah. So I also do a
- 9:37Speaker 2: little side business of smoked meat and stuff like that.
- 9:40Speaker 2: And so tonight I'm going to at about eight o'clock tonight,
- 9:44Speaker 2: I'm going to put on two big, beautiful pork shoulders
- 9:47Speaker 2: which are going to smoke all night and in the
- 9:49Speaker 2: morning they're going to be ready to pull apart, and
- 9:51Speaker 2: we're going to be doing pulled pork burghers as well
- 9:54Speaker 2: as the sausage, saying is all morning, mate.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I reckon Crystal, my producer, and I am just about
- 9:58Speaker 1: ready to get in the car draftic.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Catherine loaded up and down.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I love it now before I let you go. This morning,
- 10:09Speaker 1: you did just starlight swim. You were raising money and
- 10:12Speaker 1: you were obviously swimming. I can't remember how many kilometers?
- 10:15Speaker 1: Was it forty?
- 10:17Speaker 2: Yeah it was. I think that's nice. Yet it's a
- 10:20Speaker 2: bit too many. It was sixteen kilometers.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I feel extra.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I did a kilometer a day for sixteen days. We
- 10:31Speaker 2: ended up raising a touch over seventeen thousand dollars. Yeah,
- 10:37Speaker 2: we were number four in Australia for donors, so that
- 10:41Speaker 2: was you know, from the community and everyone involved. It
- 10:43Speaker 2: was such a such a cool thing to see that
- 10:45Speaker 2: we could be in the top ten, not just the
- 10:48Speaker 2: top ten, the top five in Australia for donations. So
- 10:51Speaker 2: it was really cool and yeah, I enjoyed that swim.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I did indulge afterwards the colors fuelile in willing to
- 10:58Speaker 2: get a touch up after those swimming days. But yeah,
- 11:01Speaker 2: it was it was so good A.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Good stuff mate. I love what you're doing in Catherine,
- 11:06Speaker 1: all the great stuff that is going on, and I
- 11:09Speaker 1: particularly think that it's wonderful that the community is really
- 11:13Speaker 1: rallying for that young lady who was attagged after she
- 11:16Speaker 1: was finishing work. I just thought it was appalling when
- 11:19Speaker 1: we all sort of heard that story come through, and
- 11:22Speaker 1: the fact that the community is really rallying to support
- 11:24Speaker 1: her is a beautiful thing and shows you what kind
- 11:27Speaker 1: of community Catherine is.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Absolutely I was quite embarrassed actually when I saw that
- 11:33Speaker 2: news report about what had happened. But this takes all
- 11:36Speaker 2: that away, you know, when it has to be people
- 11:38Speaker 2: rally around her because it's not what Catherine's about, you know,
- 11:41Speaker 2: and it's a few cowards out there that are doing this,
- 11:43Speaker 2: and yeah, we're going to just let them know that
- 11:45Speaker 2: it's not okay, and we're going to get this young
- 11:47Speaker 2: girl fixed up and she'll be smiling beautifully again while
- 11:50Speaker 2: she was working at brumby VP and McDonald's.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Oh good honor. What an absolute legend. Well, Trent, you
- 11:57Speaker 1: are a legend as well, mate. It is always good
- 11:59Speaker 1: to catch up with. Thank you so much for having
- 12:01Speaker 1: a chat with us this morning.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Thanks Codie, appreciate the time. Thank you.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Thanks mate,
