- 0:00Speaker 1: And now, Effective Communication with Phil Zeller, CEO, Dale Carnegie,
- 0:05Speaker 1: Southwest Michigan. I do so love deep, intentional conversations, especially
- 0:15Speaker 1: with people that I love in my life. Hello, Phil Zeller,
- 0:18Speaker 1: Effective Communication. Honor and privilege to be with you. When's
- 0:21Speaker 1: the last time you sat down with a good friend
- 0:24Speaker 1: or family member and had a very intentional conversation, a
- 0:28Speaker 1: deep conversation? That conversation where you question the.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Meaning of life and thought, how do I make life better?
- 0:36Speaker 1: So that's a conversation I had just a few days
- 0:38Speaker 1: ago with my son.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It was an amazing conversation.
- 0:42Speaker 1: And it was prompted because I'm constantly studying out there
- 0:44Speaker 1: and looking at, okay, what does history teach us?
- 0:49Speaker 2: What do we learn?
- 0:51Speaker 1: And when we look at history, we can learn a
- 0:53Speaker 1: lot of things if we open our mind to it.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Not to judge it, but to understand it and understand
- 1:00Speaker 1: What happened?
- 1:02Speaker 2: Why do you think it happened? And what can you
- 1:04Speaker 2: garner from it? And so I was.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Listening to some of the work of Napoleon Hill a
- 1:11Speaker 1: couple weeks ago. And of course, Napoleon Hill is an
- 1:15Speaker 1: author of Think and Grow Rich. And like Dale Carnegie,
- 1:18Speaker 1: he had a lot of insight to human behavior. And
- 1:22Speaker 1: as I was listening to some of the thoughts that
- 1:25Speaker 1: Napoleon was putting out there, I shared with my son.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I said, you know, here's somebody like Dale Carnegie that
- 1:32Speaker 1: I want you to listen to. So my son listened
- 1:35Speaker 1: to some of the audio books from Napoleon Hill. And
- 1:40Speaker 1: it set up a great conversation for him and I
- 1:42Speaker 1: to have. And really, one of the things that came
- 1:46Speaker 1: out of it was the simplistic approach that people before
- 1:51Speaker 1: us had with a way to address life.
- 1:53Speaker 2: They didn't become overwhelmed with life. They didn't. They didn't
- 1:56Speaker 2: freak out. They didn't have anxiety attacks.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I've shared with you before, the term anxiety as it
- 2:01Speaker 1: comes to human beings, that's a relatively new phenomenon in
- 2:05Speaker 1: human behavior. Only within the past few decades has it
- 2:09Speaker 1: become part of popular culture. Anxiety wasn't something in popular
- 2:13Speaker 1: culture when I was a child, and.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yet it is every day now. People face anxiety.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So the reality is when you Look at history and
- 2:22Speaker 1: look at people who have studied history and what other
- 2:23Speaker 1: great people did to be successful.
- 2:26Speaker 2: It's great to learn from them.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And one of the analogies I love that Napoleon Hill
- 2:32Speaker 1: shared was the farmer analogy. And the farmer analogy, my
- 2:36Speaker 1: son talked about it, was that the farmer prepares for
- 2:40Speaker 1: the harvest. Okay, they prepare for the harvest. So the
- 2:43Speaker 1: harvest is, of course, harvest. what they're going to produce,
- 2:47Speaker 1: whatever they're going to produce on the farm. What is
- 2:49Speaker 1: it that they're going to produce? That's the harvest. So
- 2:51Speaker 1: maybe it's a certain type of crop, a vegetable. Maybe
- 2:54Speaker 1: it's a dairy farm and they have cows and they're
- 2:59Speaker 1: producing milk. There's lots of different things that a farmer
- 3:03Speaker 1: could produce. And so they take into consideration everything in
- 3:06Speaker 1: their life and they say, okay, this is what I'm
- 3:09Speaker 1: going to.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Produce as a farmer.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So their goal is to reach that harvest where they
- 3:13Speaker 1: have a great bumper crop, as they say, which is
- 3:15Speaker 1: a great crop, especially a big crop, that they can
- 3:20Speaker 1: take to market and sell and, of course, make a
- 3:22Speaker 1: good income on selling it. But as Napoleon Hill shares,
- 3:26Speaker 1: long before the farmer can harvest the crop, you have
- 3:32Speaker 1: to start with preparing the soil. So if you're going
- 3:35Speaker 1: to plant something in soil, what did you do to
- 3:38Speaker 1: prepare the soil? And Napoleon Hill relates that to your mind.
- 3:42Speaker 1: What are you doing to prepare your mind to be successful,
- 3:46Speaker 1: to create a successful life? Because, you know, your attitude
- 3:50Speaker 1: is what your thoughts make it, as Dale Carnegie said.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So did you cultivate that soil? It's like the farmer
- 3:56Speaker 1: cultivates the soil. Did you open your mind to possibilities?
- 4:01Speaker 1: Much like the farmer cultivated the soil to get it
- 4:04Speaker 1: prepared to accept the seed. Are you opening your mind
- 4:08Speaker 1: to the possibilities? And did you tend it as the
- 4:11Speaker 1: farmer does? Do you water it? Do you fertilize it?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Do you pull the weeds out, the negative things out
- 4:17Speaker 1: of your mind? And do you make sure you're putting
- 4:19Speaker 1: positive things in your mind, not negative things, in order to.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Create that harvest?
- 4:26Speaker 1: Now, if you do all these things and prepare them,
- 4:28Speaker 1: the idea is that you're going to have a great
- 4:31Speaker 1: harvest as a farmer. But there's thousands of decisions to
- 4:35Speaker 1: go into it. But the relationship is back to your mind.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Is your mind prepared to grow? Is your mind open
- 4:45Speaker 1: to growth? Is your mind leading you in a direction
- 4:49Speaker 1: that is going to make your life better? Because that's
- 4:53Speaker 1: what we have to do. We have to align our
- 4:55Speaker 1: thoughts with our actions. So the actions that you do,
- 4:59Speaker 1: just like the farmer, know that today is not going
- 5:02Speaker 1: to be the harvest.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Today is the work. And one day we'll get the
- 5:06Speaker 2: harvest we want. But you have to put.
- 5:09Speaker 1: The actions in every day to create the outcome you want.
- 5:14Speaker 1: But it all begins with your thoughts. So two days later,
- 5:18Speaker 1: my son shared with me after our conversation, Dad, I've
- 5:21Speaker 1: got an action plan. I've got things I'm going to
- 5:24Speaker 1: do to lead that intentional life. And what a proud
- 5:27Speaker 1: moment that was for me that I hope you have
- 5:29Speaker 1: with the people you love in your family to help
- 5:31Speaker 1: them to get to where they want to go to
- 5:33Speaker 1: have an intentional life.
- 5:34Speaker 2: But remember, the law of the harvest. Don't count your
- 5:37Speaker 2: chickens before they hatch.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Rather, create a work plan that's going to produce more chickens.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Hey, that's wisdom of a farmer, not mine. Now go
- 5:47Speaker 2: make it happen.
