- 0:00Speaker 1: And then mister announced man said, we are at Bear
- 0:02Speaker 1: Smokehouse Barbecue down to Dot Hartford for another edition of
- 0:05Speaker 1: the Yukon Mets Hockey Coach of Shelton. I'm Bob Joyce
- 0:07Speaker 1: with Adam Jardino, and the guy in the middle is
- 0:09Speaker 1: a head coach, Mike Kavanaugh, whose team is four games
- 0:12Speaker 1: into the season, two up, two down, a split at
- 0:14Speaker 1: Colorado College and a split this past weekend against the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Buckeyes of Ohio State.
- 0:18Speaker 2: First of all, good to see you once again.
- 0:20Speaker 3: And how would you big picture look at your team
- 0:23Speaker 3: four games in and what your team has done so far.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it's an interesting question. We talked about that today
- 0:30Speaker 4: in the locker room before practice. You know, we've played
- 0:34Speaker 4: two really quality opponents. Colorado College is five and one.
- 0:39Speaker 4: We played them on the road. They've got a great building,
- 0:43Speaker 4: did a really good job, you know with their recruiting class,
- 0:48Speaker 4: and we played you know, I didn't love our game
- 0:51Speaker 4: Friday night out there. I thought we played well enough
- 0:55Speaker 4: to stay in the game, but it wasn't our best.
- 0:58Speaker 4: And coming out Saturday, I thought we showed how we
- 1:05Speaker 4: can truly play, you know, and we really had a
- 1:09Speaker 4: great response to what we did Friday. But part of
- 1:12Speaker 4: the problem when you don't have exhibition games or you
- 1:16Speaker 4: have a preseason that's you know, eighteen to twenty practices
- 1:20Speaker 4: long without playing against another opponent, you can never replicate
- 1:25Speaker 4: how hard another team's going to for check or how
- 1:28Speaker 4: they're going to play in the defensive zone. So you
- 1:30Speaker 4: have to sometimes, you know, you learn on the run,
- 1:36Speaker 4: and we were okay. As I said, I thought we
- 1:40Speaker 4: responded really well Saturday on the road to get that split,
- 1:46Speaker 4: and then against Ohio State. I love the way we
- 1:48Speaker 4: came out in the first period on Friday night. That
- 1:50Speaker 4: was a game that could have been three four nothing
- 1:53Speaker 4: after the first period, and every really kept them in
- 1:56Speaker 4: the game. But we found you know, in the second
- 2:00Speaker 4: I thought was a lot more even. However, we capitalized
- 2:05Speaker 4: on our chances and we're up three to one, and
- 2:07Speaker 4: the third period we played not to lose, which is understandable.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Early in the season. We got to get to the
- 2:14Speaker 4: point where we're going to just keep going and play
- 2:16Speaker 4: our game and we're going to play to win this game,
- 2:19Speaker 4: not three to one, five to one. That's how we
- 2:21Speaker 4: want to win this game, and we held on to
- 2:24Speaker 4: win the game. I thought Tyler was excellent in the
- 2:26Speaker 4: game on Saturday. I thought we played a much better
- 2:29Speaker 4: game as a team five on five, were much more
- 2:35Speaker 4: sound as a team. We didn't give up as much
- 2:38Speaker 4: as we gave up on Friday night, and it was
- 2:42Speaker 4: just one of those games where we were a little
- 2:43Speaker 4: snake bit. We had some chances. Jake Richard hit the
- 2:47Speaker 4: post and two minutes into the game and he had
- 2:50Speaker 4: a breakaway, and Perceval had a great chance and he
- 2:53Speaker 4: slipped scored a goal on a quick whistle that they
- 2:57Speaker 4: didn't count, and that happened sometimes. It was just an
- 3:03Speaker 4: unfortunate game where I thought we played well enough to win,
- 3:07Speaker 4: but we didn't. And we've learned a lot about our
- 3:09Speaker 4: team and we understand what makes us good and if
- 3:14Speaker 4: we don't play a certain way, we're going to have
- 3:17Speaker 4: to rely on our goalie to make a lot of
- 3:18Speaker 4: saves to win a hockey game. So we're learning about
- 3:22Speaker 4: our team early on. And I like the fact that
- 3:24Speaker 4: we're playing really good opponents, because sometimes when you play
- 3:27Speaker 4: teams that might be a little inferior to you, you
- 3:29Speaker 4: get away with wins and you think you're pretty good
- 3:32Speaker 4: and then you get exposed. So I think going into
- 3:35Speaker 4: this weekend, we have one heck of opponent in front
- 3:38Speaker 4: of us. I was looking at their roster today. I
- 3:41Speaker 4: think they have eighteen draft picks on the team. So
- 3:45Speaker 4: we're going to have to certainly be firing on all
- 3:48Speaker 4: cylinders if we want to have some success this weekend.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Thinking about the trip as a whole, out to Colorado
- 3:54Speaker 2: Springs with the intent of it being a bit of
- 3:57Speaker 2: a different business trip for the guys, did that get
- 4:00Speaker 2: structured in terms of playing and practice or whatever it
- 4:04Speaker 2: was that got you guys ready for a game that's
- 4:06Speaker 2: you know, a couple of time zones away.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think we factored too much into that.
- 4:13Speaker 4: You know, I've coached a bunch of teams that have
- 4:15Speaker 4: gone out to play in Denver or Colorado College, and
- 4:19Speaker 4: the altitude is just a mental thing. It's really not
- 4:23Speaker 4: a factor, not when you're going out for a quick game.
- 4:25Speaker 4: You know, if it was, we should have been worse
- 4:29Speaker 4: the second night, I think, or I don't know, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 4: like it's not a factor. We weren't tired, that wasn't
- 4:35Speaker 4: an issue at all. On the weekend. We had great
- 4:39Speaker 4: flights out. There was seamless as far as travel, So
- 4:45Speaker 4: I think it's just all how you're going to play mentally,
- 4:49Speaker 4: and our kids were good. That certainly wasn't an issue.
- 4:53Speaker 4: You just early on in the season you're still figuring out.
- 4:58Speaker 4: We've lost guys, we have new guys into our program,
- 5:01Speaker 4: we lost some really key contributors to the program, and
- 5:05Speaker 4: there's always going to be a feeling out period and
- 5:07Speaker 4: what kind of team are we going to be? And
- 5:09Speaker 4: we have new leadership and they're doing a great job,
- 5:12Speaker 4: but it takes a while. You know, we have we
- 5:17Speaker 4: have a roster of players right now, but we're not
- 5:21Speaker 4: necessarily a team yet. You know, we'll get there, but
- 5:24Speaker 4: it's going to take some time.
- 5:26Speaker 3: What would you like this identity of this team to
- 5:28Speaker 3: be ultimately? Do you make up starting to build?
- 5:32Speaker 4: I think the identity of Yukon Hockey is a team
- 5:37Speaker 4: that you know, pressures teams in all three zones and
- 5:42Speaker 4: competes like heck finishes checks, We skate, we we apply
- 5:47Speaker 4: a lot of pressure to our opponent and we you know,
- 5:51Speaker 4: we're just not necessarily connected yet in all three zones,
- 5:56Speaker 4: but we will be. It's gonna it's going to happen.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I like the fact that we have great leadership and
- 6:04Speaker 4: I like the fact that we have a really talented
- 6:06Speaker 4: freshman class that came in. I like the fact that
- 6:09Speaker 4: we're strong in goal. There's a lot of things to
- 6:11Speaker 4: like about our team. Now it's a matter of making
- 6:14Speaker 4: sure we getting everybody on the same page, and sometimes
- 6:17Speaker 4: that takes a little time. If you remember last year,
- 6:20Speaker 4: you know, yeah, we got off to a pretty good start,
- 6:22Speaker 4: but then we got swept, you know, by Merrimack, and
- 6:26Speaker 4: it took some soul searching to find out the type
- 6:29Speaker 4: of team we wanted to be.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Yep, and then you played BC and the rest, as
- 6:33Speaker 3: they say, is history.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Yeah, but even still, like we beat BC that time,
- 6:37Speaker 4: but then we split with Lowell and then we lost
- 6:39Speaker 4: to BC in overtime. You know, even over those four
- 6:42Speaker 4: games after we got swept, it wasn't like we ran
- 6:44Speaker 4: the table. It took a while to figure out what
- 6:47Speaker 4: was going to make us successful as a team, and
- 6:50Speaker 4: eventually we did. And I have confidence, the utmost confidence
- 6:56Speaker 4: in our leadership right now. And you know, the Tabor
- 7:03Speaker 4: Heath slip and Ryan Taddle and Joey Muldowney and Viking
- 7:07Speaker 4: and Jake Richard. It's laudable to me the type of
- 7:12Speaker 4: leadership that they bring to our team and that's what
- 7:16Speaker 4: you know, can lower your blood pressure as a coach,
- 7:19Speaker 4: knowing that you have that going forward.
- 7:21Speaker 3: All right, it's the Yukon Hockey Coach A Show. We'll
- 7:23Speaker 3: get into that more with Coach Cabin. Of course, Huskies
- 7:26Speaker 3: have be you on the weekend. We'll have the game
- 7:27Speaker 3: Friday night, six forty five on the radio. We're live
- 7:30Speaker 3: at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue. It's dinner and a show, The
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yukon Hockey Coach A Show on Learfield.
- 7:34Speaker 2: We be back in a minute.
