[Rebecca] Welcome to Most Fascinating Stories, where we uncover the real, well-sourced, and lesser-known tales behind history's most prominent figures.
• 0:10
  [Rebecca] I'm your host, Rebecca.
• 0:12
[Rebecca] Today, we enter the stormy political crucible of the Holy Roman Empire at the height of the Middle Ages.
• 0:18
[Rebecca] For centuries, European kings and emperors claimed absolute authority by divine right, ruling both church and state with unquestioned power.
• 0:27
[Rebecca] That illusion was shattered in the winter of 1077, high in the frozen Apennine Mountains of northern Italy.
• 0:34
[Rebecca] There, the most powerful secular monarch in Christendom, Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV, found himself standing barefoot in the snow, begging an uncompromising pope for mercy.
• 0:45
[Rebecca] It was a spectacle that shocked the medieval world and permanently redrew the boundaries between church and state.
• 0:52
[Rebecca] Here is George with the story.
• 0:55
[George] In the 11th century, the Holy Roman Empire was the preeminent military and political powerhouse in Western Europe.
• 1:02
[George] Ruling over modern Germany, Northern Italy, and Burgundy, the Salian dynasty considered themselves the direct heirs to Charlemagne and the Caesars of ancient Rome.
• 1:13
[George] For generations, emperors had treated the Catholic Church not as an independent spiritual authority, but as an administrative branch of imperial government.
• 1:22
[George] Emperors appointed their own loyal cousins, wealthy counts, and military advisors as bishops and abbots, investing them with the spiritual ring and staff.
• 1:32
[George] These prince-bishops controlled vast estates, levied taxes, and provided thousands of armored knights for the emperor's imperial campaigns.
• 1:41
[George] In 1073, however, the papal throne was ascended by a radical, ascetic monk named Hildebrand, who took the name Pope Gregory V.
• 1:50
  [George] I.I.
• 1:50
[George] Gregory was a spiritual revolutionary.
• 1:53
[George] He issued the famous Dictatus Papi, declaring that the Roman Church was founded by God alone, that the Pope held universal supremacy over all earthly rulers, and that the Pope possessed the absolute right to depose kings and emperors.
• 2:08
[George] The twenty six-year-old Emperor Henry IV was incandescent with fury.
• 2:12
[George] Viewing Gregory as an upstart priest attempting to dismantle royal sovereignty, Henry convened a synod of loyal German bishops at Worms, formally pronouncing Gregory deposed as a false monk.
• 2:24
[George] Gregory struck back with the ultimate spiritual thunderbolt.
• 2:28
[George] He placed Henry under excommunication, cutting him off from the sacraments, and releasing all Christian subjects from their solemn oaths of feudal loyalty to the emperor.
• 2:37
[George] In medieval Europe, an imperial excommunication was not merely a spiritual penalty, it was a political death sentence.
• 2:45
[George] Across the German heartland, ambitious dukes and princes seized upon the Pope's decree to throw off the imperial yoke.
• 2:53
[George] Led by Duke Rudolf of Swabia and the Duke of Bavaria, the German nobility formed an armed confederation.
• 3:00
[George] Meeting at the Diet of Trebor in October of 1076, the rebel princes issued Henry an icy, non-negotiable ultimatum.
• 3:08
[George] Unless he received formal papal absolution within one year and a day of his excommunication, by February 2, 1077, his imperial crown would be declared permanently vacant, and the princes would elect a new monarch.
• 3:22
[George] Worse still, Pope Gregory announced that he was traveling north through the Alps to the imperial city of Augsburg, Germany, where he would personally preside over an assembly to judge Henry's sins and formally strip him of the crown.
• 3:36
  [George] Henry was completely trapped.
• 3:38
[George] His armies were melting away, his bishops were scurrying to make private peace with Rome, and winter was closing in.
• 3:44
[George] Henry realized that if the Pope met with the rebel princes on German soil, his reign was over.
• 3:51
[George] He had only one desperate gamble.
• 3:54
[George] He had to secretly flee Germany, intercept the Pope on Italian soil, and force him to grant absolution before the Augsburg summit could take place.
• 4:03
[George] In the winter of 1076, Europe was gripped by what chroniclers recorded as the coldest winter in living memory.
• 4:10
[George] From November to April, the Rhine River froze solid from bank to bank, with merchant wagons driving across the ice.
• 4:17
[George] The rebel German princes blocked all the standard, well-travelled alpine passes through the Brenner and St.
• 4:23
[George] Gotthard routes, hoping to trap Henry in Germany until his fatal deadline expired.
• 4:29
[George] Undeterred, Henry departed secretly with his twenty five-year-old wife Queen Bertha, their infant son Prince Conrad, and a tiny escort of loyal knights.
• 4:39
[George] They were forced to attempt the perilous, untracked western crossing over Montseny's pass into Savoy.
• 4:45
[George] The mountain slopes were sheer cliffs of blue, wind-scoured ice.
• 4:50
[George] Local mountain guides warned the king that crossing in January was sheer madness.
• 4:55
[George] Yet, with time running out, Henry paid the guides in gold to lead them up into the howling blizzards.
• 5:00
[George] The crossing was a nightmare of frozen terror.
• 5:03
[George] Pack horses slipped on the glare ice and tumbled thousands of feet into rocky ravines.
• 5:09
[George] To descend the sheer southern precipices, the guides bound Queen Bertha and her infant baby inside heavy ox hides, lowering them down frozen cliffs with ropes like bundles of timber.
• 5:20
[George] Henry and his knights scrambled down on their hands and knees, sliding on their bellies through snowdrifts, their fingers and toes frost-bitten.
• 5:29
[George] Miraculously, against all odds, the royal family survived the descent and emerged onto the plains of Lombardy.
• 5:36
[George] When Pope Gregory learned that the Emperor had crossed the frozen Alps and was marching south, he was terrified that Henry had come with an army to sack Rome.
• 5:45
[George] Gregory immediately retreated into the mountain fortress of Canossa Castle, the impregnable stronghold of his staunch ally, Countess Matilda of Tuscany.
• 5:55
[George] Canassa Castle sat upon a jagged, windswept limestone ridge in the northern foothills of the Apennine Mountains, surrounded by three rings of massive stone battlements.
• 6:06
[George] Inside the fortress, Gregory felt completely secure, guarded by Countess Matilda's veteran Italian men at arms.
• 6:13
[George] On January 25, 1077, Henry arrived before the outer gates.
• 6:19
[George] To the Pope's utter astonishment, Henry arrived not at the head of an armored cavalry host, but accompanied only by a handful of weeping priests.
• 6:28
[George] Outside the inner castle gate, in the outer ward between the walls, Henry performed an act of staggering theatre.
• 6:35
[George] He stripped off his imperial mantle of Tyrian purple, his gold embroidered tunic, his sword, and his leather riding boots.
• 6:43
[George] He dressed himself in a coarse, scratchy woollen penitential tunic, a haircloth garment typically reserved for the lowest beggars and lepers.
• 6:52
[George] Barefoot in the freezing slush and drifting snow, Emperor Henry stood outside the closed oak doors, weeping aloud and begging the Pope to hear his confession.
• 7:01
[George] Inside the castle, Gregory refused to open the gate.
• 7:05
[George] A ferocious winter gale blew through the mountain passes.
• 7:09
[George] For three full days, the 25th, 26th, and 27 January, the Supreme secular ruler of Western civilization stood in the snow, fasting from sunrise to sunset, shivering uncontrollably, with his bare feet turning purple from frostbite.
• 7:25
[George] The scene horrified everyone inside the castle.
• 7:29
[George] Countess Matilda of Tuscany, along with Abbot Hugh of Cluny, wept openly at the sight of the barefoot emperor, falling on their knees before Gregory and pleading with the Pope to show Christian mercy.
• 7:40
[George] Henry's groveling was not mere brokenness, it was a devastating political trap.
• 7:46
[George] As Pope and Vicar of Christ, Gregory was bound by canonical law.
• 7:50
[George] He could not refuse absolution to a penitent sinner who stood in haircloth begging for forgiveness.
• 7:56
[George] If Gregory turned him away to freeze to death outside the gates, the Pope would be denounced across Christendom as a cold-blooded tyrant rather than a spiritual shepherd.
• 8:05
[George] On the morning of January 28, Gregory capitulated.
• 8:09
[George] The heavy iron reinforced gates creaked open.
• 8:12
[George] Henry crawled on his knees through the slush into the castle chapel, falling prostrate at Gregory's feet and crying, Holy Father, spare me, Gregory raised him up, kissed him on the cheek, administered holy communion, and formally revoked the excommunication.
• 8:28
[George] Henry had achieved exactly what he needed.
• 8:31
[George] The legal pretext for his deposition by the German princes was dissolved.
• 8:35
[George] He returned to Germany, rallied loyalist forces, defeated the rebel princes in battle, and eventually drove Pope Gregory into exile from Rome.
• 8:45
[George] Yet, the long-term cost of Canossa was catastrophic for the monarchy.
• 8:49
[George] The spectacle of an emperor standing barefoot in the snow for three days permanently demystified the divine aura of kings, establishing that no earthly crown was sovereign above the universal moral authority of human conscience.
• 9:03
[George] The dramatic reconciliation at Canossa brought no true peace.
• 9:07
[George] Back in Germany, the rebel princes felt betrayed by the Pope's sudden absolution of their enemy.
• 9:13
[George] Refusing to accept Henry's restoration, the princes met at Forchheim in March of 1077 and elected Duke Rudolf of Swabia as anti-king.
• 9:23
[George] Civil war erupted across the German duchies with savage intensity.
• 9:27
[George] Villages were burned, cathedrals looted, and brother fought against brother in the mud of Thuringia and Saxony.
• 9:34
[George] When Henry demanded that the Pope excommunicate the usurper Rudolf, Gregory hesitated, attempting to act as a neutral arbitrator.
• 9:42
[George] Realizing that Gregory was wavering, Henry threatened to install his own pope.
• 9:47
[George] In 1080, Gregory excommunicated Henry a second time.
• 9:51
[George] This time, however, the papal thunderbolt had lost its terrifying magic.
• 9:56
[George] The German people recognized that the second excommunication was driven by cynical politics rather than moral theology.
• 10:03
[George] Henry marched his veteran armies into Italy, laid siege to Rome, captured the city, and forced Pope Gregory to flee into the fortress of Castel Santangelo.
• 10:13
[George] Henry installed his own antipope, Clement III, who officially crowned Henry as Holy Roman Emperor in St.
• 10:20
  [George] Peter's Basilica.
• 10:21
[George] Pope Gregory died in bitter exile in Salerno in 1085, his famous dying words echoing through history.
• 10:29
[George] I have loved justice and hated iniquity.
• 10:32
[George] Therefore, I die in exile.
• 10:34
[George] The legacy of Canossa echoed through European history for nine centuries.
• 10:39
[George] In the German language, the phrase knack Canossa Jehan, to go to Canossa became the universal idiom for suffering total, humiliating submission.
• 10:48
[George] 800 years later, during the Kulturkampf of the 1870s, when Chancellor Otto von Bismarck clashed with the Catholic Church over the secular authority of the German Empire.
• 10:59
[George] Bismarck famously declared to the Reichstag, be in no doubt.
• 11:04
[George] We shall not go to Canasa, neither in body nor in spirit.
• 11:08
[George] The walk to Canassa was the foundational moment of modern Western secularism.
• 11:13
[George] By proving that an emperor could be challenged, judged, and brought to his knees, it began the long, agonizing medieval process of separating the spiritual power of the church from the temporal power of the state.
• 11:25
[George] It demonstrated that supreme power is never absolute, and that even the mightiest rulers on earth must eventually answer to principles greater than their own thrones.
• 11:43
[Rebecca] It proves that sometimes the willingness to swallow one's pride can disarm the most unyielding adversary and alter the course of empires.
