- 0:00Speaker 1: This is The Bad Hire, the show with the best
- 0:02Speaker 1: stories about the worst employees. We fired him, of course.
- 0:06Speaker 1: People are crazy. It's like an HR nightmare. Right? One
- 0:10Speaker 1: bad hire stole all of it. Crazy stuff.
- 0:13Speaker 2: She got what she deserved.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Oh. I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we
- 0:19Speaker 1: dive into real-life stories... from the wild world of work
- 0:23Speaker 1: and what can happen when the wrong person gets the job.
- 0:27Speaker 1: These stories aren't just crazy. They're cautionary tales about lessons
- 0:31Speaker 1: learned the hard way. Let's get started.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Hey, everyone.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Welcome to The Bad Hire, episode 10. We're loving it.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Good to be back. And we've got Nathan with us.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Hello.
- 0:42Speaker 1: How you doing, brother? I'm good. Yeah, good stuff. And
- 0:46Speaker 1: Dallin Wortham, he's the CEO of Charter Connect.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, happy to be here. He's back.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You were here last time. Yeah. We're knocking him out today.
- 0:53Speaker 1: So let's remind everybody, if they didn't listen to the
- 0:57Speaker 1: last episode, tell me a little bit about your business,
- 0:59Speaker 1: what you're doing, all that kind of fun stuff.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I think it's really cool. I love what you're doing.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Love the mission of the business and the mission of
- 1:06Speaker 1: the market you serve.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so pretty much it's just... a market agency that
- 1:10Speaker 2: helps charter schools grow. And as we've grown, we've had
- 1:14Speaker 2: to start hiring people, bringing people from all walks of life.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And it's been a wild ride to be on top
- 1:20Speaker 2: of a business that kind of just is like on
- 1:23Speaker 2: a rocket engine. It wants to go. It wants to fly.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And we're kind of learning to fly it as we go.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And it's been really, really fun. And that's why I
- 1:33Speaker 2: think this podcast is so interesting because man do i
- 1:38Speaker 2: have a few stories.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Right if you've been around if you've been around a
- 1:42Speaker 1: little bit you you get you get stories if you've
- 1:45Speaker 1: hired people yeah you got you got even if you
- 1:48Speaker 1: haven't you started yeah you got interview stories you got
- 1:51Speaker 1: bad hire stories stories yeah you got good hire term
- 1:54Speaker 1: bad hire stories you know i mean i've had them
- 1:57Speaker 1: all over the years and um you know whenever i'm
- 2:00Speaker 1: hanging out with whenever i'm hanging out with my boat
- 2:04Speaker 1: my folks that are like recruiting and just hiring all
- 2:06Speaker 1: the time or it's like it always it's always turns
- 2:10Speaker 1: to oh you should hear that story you know what
- 2:13Speaker 1: happened this guy just melted down on better right so
- 2:17Speaker 1: yes that's the purpose of the banner so it's it's
- 2:19Speaker 1: pretty cool so don i love your business man it's
- 2:21Speaker 1: super cool thank you um i love what you've done
- 2:24Speaker 1: with it your you know your background is is an
- 2:27Speaker 1: airline pilot yeah yeah airline pilot turned entrepreneur yeah right
- 2:31Speaker 1: that is cool and then turn marketer too you would
- 2:34Speaker 1: expect like turned engineering something.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Well, we should check out down on LinkedIn because it
- 2:39Speaker 3: has pretty much your full life.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Story in bullet points. Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 3: And we mentioned you at a conference a couple months
- 2:45Speaker 3: ago and we're like, this guy might be like the
- 2:47Speaker 3: most interesting guy.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Right at the conference.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Y'all are too crazy, too nice. Y'all are buttering my bread.
- 2:54Speaker 2: But yeah, it's been fun and I mean, tons of
- 2:57Speaker 2: funny customer service stories in the airline space with delays
- 3:01Speaker 2: and whatnot. And so being able to take that and
- 3:05Speaker 2: then hiring stories, ooh.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah, so as a reminder, Dallin, here's what we do
- 3:09Speaker 1: every week. We unpack some bad hire stories, whether they're interview,
- 3:13Speaker 1: good hire, term bad hire, bad hire from the beginning,
- 3:15Speaker 1: whatever it is, we unpack the stories. We go out
- 3:17Speaker 1: and source them and try to find them. But what
- 3:19Speaker 1: we're really after is creating a pipeline of people sending
- 3:24Speaker 1: us stories that are out there in the trenches that
- 3:26Speaker 1: are experiencing this kind of stuff and then sending them
- 3:29Speaker 1: to us. And so we created a contest. It's a $ 10, 000 contest.
- 3:32Speaker 1: If you send us the best story for this season,
- 3:34Speaker 1: We're going to give away $ 10, 000. We're going to give
- 3:36Speaker 1: the best story a $ 10, 000 award. And so, you know,
- 3:42Speaker 1: the stories can be crazy, wild, funny, you know, tragic.
- 3:47Speaker 1: There's a range, right? It's not just about fun. Sometimes
- 3:51Speaker 1: it's about, like, just understanding the importance of hiring and
- 3:54Speaker 1: recruiting and doing due diligence. And, you know, when something
- 3:59Speaker 1: bad happens, it's, you know, those are really bad hire stories. Yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 1: But we give away the $ 10, 000. That's our way. And so,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you know, you'll see us on LinkedIn. We're running ads
- 4:09Speaker 1: on LinkedIn and some other things, trying to get the
- 4:11Speaker 1: word out and participate. Send us your stuff and we'll
- 4:14Speaker 1: tell it. And if you send us a story, we'll
- 4:16Speaker 1: tell the story. We could invite you onto the show
- 4:18Speaker 1: if it's a really cool story. Yeah, you might even
- 4:21Speaker 1: be brought in to be a host for a couple episodes.
- 4:23Speaker 1: It'd be fun. You know, we're just looking to engage,
- 4:25Speaker 1: chop it up with people who are in. Yeah, just
- 4:28Speaker 1: want to chop it up. People are in this business
- 4:29Speaker 1: of hiring. You know, that's it. And so I know,
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know, You're growing your business and you just have
- 4:35Speaker 1: a career. By the time you've had a career, you've
- 4:39Speaker 1: either worked alongside a bad hire, you've made a bad hire, whatever.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Maybe you've been to bad hire.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Let's get started. This is one that was provided to me.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Back when I was a shift leader at a restaurant,
- 4:53Speaker 1: we had this high school hostess who came in with
- 4:57Speaker 1: a serious attitude problem. She wasn't a terrible worker at first,
- 5:02Speaker 1: but Anytime I asked her to do something simple, sweeping,
- 5:07Speaker 1: wiping down menus, resetting tables, sounds like someone working in
- 5:10Speaker 1: a restaurant, right? So like typical things you would ask.
- 5:13Speaker 1: She'd huff and roll her eyes like I was singling
- 5:15Speaker 1: her out. She'd mutter under her breath that I was
- 5:18Speaker 1: always picking on her, even though I was just assigning
- 5:21Speaker 1: some normal tasks. Hey, I got this job that you,
- 5:24Speaker 1: this task that you do at this job regularly, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: you've turned it into picking, so. It built up over time,
- 5:32Speaker 1: and one night it came to a head. She got
- 5:34Speaker 1: so loud and belligerent on the floor, the manager had
- 5:37Speaker 1: no choice but to send her home mid-shift. I remember thinking, well,
- 5:42Speaker 1: that's probably the last straw. About 20 minutes later, it's
- 5:46Speaker 1: another one of these return stories. Please tell us one
- 5:49Speaker 1: of these return stories. Like where they leave and they
- 5:52Speaker 1: come back, like the Batman guy.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah, they didn't get it out of the system yet.
- 5:56Speaker 1: About 20 minutes later, the restaurant phone rings. I pick
- 5:59Speaker 1: it up, assuming it's a customer placing a takeout order. Instead,
- 6:02Speaker 1: a woman's voice comes through, calm but threatening. You better
- 6:05Speaker 1: watch your back when you walk to your car tonight. Oh, wow.
- 6:12Speaker 1: That went from wiping menus to seriousness really quick. For
- 6:20Speaker 1: a second, I froze, and then it clicked. This wasn't
- 6:23Speaker 1: some random prank call. I recognized that voice. This was
- 6:26Speaker 1: the hostess's Older sister. We called the police right away
- 6:31Speaker 1: and filed a report just to be safe. But that
- 6:33Speaker 1: night when I left, I made sure someone walked me
- 6:35Speaker 1: out of my car because honestly, I didn't know if
- 6:37Speaker 1: she actually showed up in the parking lot. But after that,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I never saw her again. Months later, though, I heard
- 6:43Speaker 1: from someone still at the restaurant. Oh, she must have.
- 6:47Speaker 1: She must have left. I heard from someone still at
- 6:49Speaker 1: the restaurant that she'd actually been rehired. OK. After I left.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Same girl, same attitude back on the schedule like nothing
- 6:57Speaker 1: had ever happened. And the older sister was probably watching
- 7:01Speaker 1: at a distance. Probably watching nearby. Man, there's somebody sitting
- 7:05Speaker 1: in the corner booth. Who is that? What is this
- 7:07Speaker 1: thing about this retaliation thing? I don't know. You get
- 7:11Speaker 1: in trouble, and this rehire thing really speaks to how
- 7:15Speaker 1: hard it is to find people. It just does. I
- 7:17Speaker 1: guess so.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Even when they're not that great.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I got a complainer. Yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 2: All right. Well, I feel like that... is it gets
- 7:29Speaker 2: so much more dangerous when one person is on their
- 7:33Speaker 2: team and they've heard one side of the story. And
- 7:36Speaker 2: so now they are coming in with all the rage
- 7:38Speaker 2: that they have from that one-sided storytelling. And that's even
- 7:42Speaker 2: more dangerous than the person that was going crazy because
- 7:46Speaker 2: at least they kind of maybe figured out later on, like, okay,
- 7:49Speaker 2: maybe I overreacted. But once you deliver that seed of
- 7:53Speaker 2: vengeance to someone that loves you, whoo!
- 7:57Speaker 1: What do you got, Nathan or Dallin? What do you guys? Actually,
- 8:02Speaker 1: you go.
- 8:02Speaker 2: All right, cool. So this will be actually a Charter Connect,
- 8:07Speaker 2: my company's story. And because, I mean, as a young entrepreneur,
- 8:14Speaker 2: we're needing to hire faster than we know how to.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And we were trying to figure it out. And maybe
- 8:22Speaker 2: later in the episode, if you'd like, I could explain
- 8:24Speaker 2: how we've kind of evolutionized our process to avoid this.
- 8:27Speaker 2: But I was, before starting Charter Connect, I was a missionary.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And I met someone that was serving with me as
- 8:36Speaker 2: another missionary. Like, oh, he's got to be a good guy, right?
- 8:39Speaker 2: Because he's out doing volunteer work. And we're down in
- 8:43Speaker 2: South America doing some missionary work. And then he goes
- 8:47Speaker 2: back to his home country of Guatemala. I go back
- 8:51Speaker 2: to my home. And we.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Send messages we stay close he actually names one of
- 8:58Speaker 2: his kids after me oh wow and he says i
- 9:01Speaker 2: just want to let you know i named my like
- 9:03Speaker 2: youngest son after you i was like i didn't wow
- 9:06Speaker 2: what an honor i don't even know what to say
- 9:08Speaker 2: um and he reaches out says hey i'm you know
- 9:12Speaker 2: struggling i would love you know if there's anything i
- 9:15Speaker 2: could do i know that you just started this new
- 9:17Speaker 2: company like heck yeah like that's why i started this
- 9:21Speaker 2: thing in the first place is to to help my
- 9:23Speaker 2: tribe so of course like Completely, no background check, no, hey,
- 9:28Speaker 2: have you been, it's been five years since we've spoken.
- 9:31Speaker 2: And he hops on this interview with my twin brother
- 9:35Speaker 2: who doesn't know him. And he's wearing, he looks like
- 9:40Speaker 2: Osama Bin Laden, like in a cape. Like he's got
- 9:42Speaker 2: this big old beard and this army jacket. And there's
- 9:45Speaker 2: just like goats behind him. Like, I'm like, where are you?
- 9:49Speaker 2: And he's like, I'm in the mountains of Guatemala. Like
- 9:52Speaker 2: this is where I live. And like the connection was
- 9:55Speaker 2: really bad because he's in a hot spot. And I
- 9:58Speaker 2: was like, whoa, this is insane. You're living like a
- 10:01Speaker 2: mountain man and not like a house, but like a.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Yeah, some type of vod shelter.
- 10:07Speaker 2: But I'm thinking, okay, you know what? Yeah, he's just
- 10:12Speaker 2: like all of us. We can't judge him based off
- 10:14Speaker 2: of where he lives or his economic condition. So kind
- 10:19Speaker 2: of just keep moving forward with him. We bring him
- 10:23Speaker 2: on and he is just like not showing up for anything.
- 10:29Speaker 2: And eventually he says, you know what? I want to
- 10:33Speaker 2: go to a city that's about like eight hour drive
- 10:37Speaker 2: called Quetzaltenango. And I want to go there and I
- 10:39Speaker 2: want to try to see if I can sell our
- 10:41Speaker 2: services to schools here in Guatemala. And I know a
- 10:43Speaker 2: few schools there like, uh, sure. Yeah, whatever. Like here's,
- 10:47Speaker 2: I'll pay your bus fee or whatever. And we don't
- 10:50Speaker 2: hear anything from him. And a few weeks later, I
- 10:54Speaker 2: get a call from this international number that I don't know.
- 10:59Speaker 2: And I'm like, hello? And it's his beautiful sweetheart wife.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And says, do you know of our friend, like where
- 11:09Speaker 2: he is? I'm like, I know that he went to Quetzaltenango.
- 11:12Speaker 1: She's like, oh, well.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Stop sending him money because that's where his other girl lives.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And we haven't seen him in months. I was like, okay.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And then as soon as the money stops flowing to
- 11:29Speaker 2: my friend, that's when he gets on the call. He's like, hey,
- 11:31Speaker 2: where's my paycheck?
- 11:32Speaker 1: Oh, wow. I'm trying to sell your stuff.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Yeah. And so then.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Well, that's the nice thing about taking a sales job
- 11:37Speaker 1: is you can last a while. I've got to build
- 11:39Speaker 1: a nice pipeline.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Build a nice pipeline.
- 11:42Speaker 2: It's coming.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Get away three or four months from that.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I'm planting seeds. The harvest comes later. And so, yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 2: And then when we let him go, he was so confused.
- 11:51Speaker 2: He had no idea why.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:54Speaker 2: And so, and my friend, if you're listening to this
- 11:57Speaker 2: or watching this, I still care about you, love you,
- 11:59Speaker 2: but yeah, man, that was, it did me dirty. You
- 12:02Speaker 2: did me dirty. So.
- 12:04Speaker 1: That's great. How long ago was that?
- 12:06Speaker 2: That was at the very beginning of Charter Connect. That
- 12:09Speaker 2: was when we were little babies crawling out of our
- 12:11Speaker 2: little cribs. It was probably 2022. And we started in
- 12:15Speaker 2: November of 2021. All right.
- 12:18Speaker 1: So what about you, Nathan? What'd you got, baby? That
- 12:20Speaker 1: was good, man. All right.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Right?
- 12:22Speaker 1: The disappearing goat man. The goat man who ran away
- 12:27Speaker 1: to be with another. Yeah. All right. So here's what
- 12:30Speaker 1: I got. I got two stories. Got time for two stories.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 12:34Speaker 3: A friend of mine in HR at a museum once
- 12:37Speaker 3: told me about one of the strangest cases that they've
- 12:40Speaker 3: ever dealt with.
- 12:41Speaker 1: They had a senior staff member whose specialty at the
- 12:44Speaker 1: museum was Alexander Hamilton.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Right?
- 12:47Speaker 3: At first, it was just a passion for the subject.
- 12:50Speaker 3: But over time, it went from passion to something else entirely.
- 12:53Speaker 3: He stopped just studying Hamilton and started actually behaving like
- 12:57Speaker 3: he was Hamilton. So no one could tell if he
- 13:00Speaker 3: thought that he was him reincarnated or if he was
- 13:03Speaker 3: really deep in character. And even his emails over time
- 13:07Speaker 3: became almost impossible to read because he stopped writing in
- 13:10Speaker 3: plain English. He's only using 18th century language taken from
- 13:14Speaker 3: Hamilton's letters and writings. And if someone disagreed with him
- 13:18Speaker 3: in a meeting, he'd accuse him of insulting his honor
- 13:21Speaker 3: and he would fire back with period appropriate insults like, sir,
- 13:24Speaker 3: how dare you besmirch my honor with such slander?
- 13:27Speaker 2: You know, that kind of thing.
- 13:29Speaker 3: He even tried to rewrite the museum signage and exhibits to,
- 13:33Speaker 3: exhibits to reflect his personal version.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Of Hamilton's story.
- 13:36Speaker 3: So not even like, you know, the historical one, regardless
- 13:39Speaker 3: of whether or not it was actually historically accurate. So
- 13:43Speaker 3: the breaking point came when he challenged a coworker to
- 13:46Speaker 3: a duel.
- 13:46Speaker 1: And Seriously, like over disagreement. That's very Hamilton. About wordy
- 13:52Speaker 1: on one of the exhibits. So that was it.
- 13:54Speaker 3: HR had to step in at that point because of
- 13:56Speaker 3: the duel. And then the police were called after the duel.
- 13:59Speaker 3: And then after the duel, he was escorted outside of
- 14:01Speaker 3: the building. So I guess they never heard back from
- 14:04Speaker 3: him again.
- 14:04Speaker 1: That's crazy. The character acting is real, I guess.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Dang, man. I mean, I feel like they probably should
- 14:12Speaker 2: have said, taking him to the public square for a flogging,
- 14:16Speaker 2: more like time appropriate.
- 14:18Speaker 1: He'll actually like that time period. Just put him in
- 14:19Speaker 1: the stockade. Is that what it is when you put
- 14:22Speaker 1: the people in the stocks? Yeah, the stocks. Yeah, that's right.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Put him in the stocks. Put him in the stocks.
- 14:28Speaker 1: He'll be okay after that.
- 14:30Speaker 3: It's just funny, that picture of him going onto Microsoft Teams,
- 14:34Speaker 3: sending emails as Alexander Hamilton.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yo, this is A.H.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Just checking in.
- 14:39Speaker 1: That's right. This is Hammy. Before we dive back into
- 14:43Speaker 1: the chaos on the bad hire, this episode is brought
- 14:46Speaker 1: to you by B-Checks. Hiring shouldn't feel like rolling the dice.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Background checks should come with great tech, seamless integration, and
- 14:54Speaker 1: customer service that delivers. That's B-Checks. Lightning-fast results, unmatched accuracy,
- 15:00Speaker 1: built-in fraud prevention. We help you hire the right people.
- 15:06Speaker 1: B-Checks plugs into over 100 HRIS and ATS systems. So
- 15:11Speaker 1: your background checks run smooth, fast, and backed by top
- 15:14Speaker 1: level service. Protect your team, protect your reputation, protect your sanity.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Go to bchex.io. That's B-C-H-E-X.io. Score number two for me.
- 15:28Speaker 3: So every HR manager has a hiring horror story of
- 15:31Speaker 3: their own.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And ours came in when.
- 15:34Speaker 3: We were desperate to fill a critical role in our team.
- 15:37Speaker 3: We'd interviewed dozens and dozens of candidates, but none.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Of them were really the right fit. After weeks of searching,
- 15:43Speaker 1: we were starting to lose hope.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Then finally, someone came along who seemed to check every
- 15:48Speaker 3: box that we needed. They're smart, personable, confident, at least
- 15:52Speaker 3: on paper, and they are exactly the skill set that
- 15:54Speaker 3: we needed. After back-to-back interviews, we were convinced it's like
- 15:58Speaker 3: we struck gold. We made an offer on the spot,
- 16:01Speaker 3: and for a moment, everything looked great. But then the
- 16:04Speaker 3: background check came back.
- 16:05Speaker 2: That's kind of a common theme.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Okay. And that's when the bottom fell out.
- 16:09Speaker 3: It turns out that they fabricated almost everything, their qualifications,
- 16:14Speaker 3: their experience, all those specific skills that they swore that
- 16:17Speaker 3: they had. More than half of what they claimed to
- 16:20Speaker 3: be able to do, they couldn't do at all. So
- 16:22Speaker 3: it looked like the perfect fit ended up being complete fraud.
- 16:26Speaker 3: And just a reminder that sometimes even the best looking
- 16:28Speaker 3: resume is a very creative piece of fiction.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Yeah. I think recruiters deal with this all the time. Yeah.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Just like. We found a perfect. And yeah, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I was telling you that long ago about that, that
- 16:43Speaker 1: like thread I read and, and, and it was in Reddit.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It was like people like telling people how to lie.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:51Speaker 1: You know, like just make it up. And just like
- 16:54Speaker 1: people were coming on there and saying, yeah, I told
- 16:55Speaker 1: him I did this and none of it was true.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And they were like congratulating each other on being so
- 17:00Speaker 1: great that it was so wrong of these companies to
- 17:02Speaker 1: actually look into this stuff. And I was like, wow,
- 17:06Speaker 1: what a mentality to have. This is how you defraud
- 17:09Speaker 1: the system. Just say that you have the experience. Just
- 17:13Speaker 1: make up that you work. Cover any gap in your
- 17:17Speaker 1: work history. Just make up something.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Well, it's crazy how you can say one thing and
- 17:22Speaker 2: two people can take it totally differently. Like if you
- 17:24Speaker 2: say like, hey, like, fake it till you make it.
- 17:26Speaker 2: One person might be like, okay, like, I just need
- 17:28Speaker 2: to have confidence and understand that we're all trying to
- 17:31Speaker 2: figure that out.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:32Speaker 2: And then other people are like, okay.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Oh, you mean fake it.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I'm just following.
- 17:36Speaker 1: No, we meant fake it till you make it. We meant, like,
- 17:38Speaker 1: you know, have the confidence that you don't. Prep yourself up.
- 17:41Speaker 1: I can fake it all day, yeah. Right. You know, bro,
- 17:45Speaker 1: I was, you know, I was a senior vice president.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I think you're 22 years old. Very accomplished.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I'm just doing what my life coach is telling me. Right.
- 17:53Speaker 1: You see, It's crazy. Yeah, you're right on. I do
- 17:57Speaker 1: think it's like it is prolific, the amount of of
- 18:02Speaker 1: of and it happens even you get to like it
- 18:07Speaker 1: gets revealed sometimes when somebody makes it to like a
- 18:09Speaker 1: really senior position. There's several CEOs here, you know, popped
- 18:13Speaker 1: who like in Charlotte who made it to the top
- 18:17Speaker 1: of their organization. Then their their story of their education
- 18:20Speaker 1: or their story of their job or their history unravels
- 18:23Speaker 1: on them. You know, and, you know, they get caught
- 18:26Speaker 1: up much earlier in their career when there wasn't so
- 18:28Speaker 1: much at stake.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:29Speaker 1: But then they drag it along with them. You know,
- 18:32Speaker 1: they can't change the story. Yeah. You know, so the
- 18:34Speaker 1: more successful they become, you know, it just, it must
- 18:38Speaker 1: be incredibly taxing to have this kind of, this thing
- 18:42Speaker 1: coming up over you, just getting larger and larger in life,
- 18:45Speaker 1: knowing I got here on a lie.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Just more rocks in your backpack.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Terrible. Yeah.
- 18:52Speaker 2: All right, man.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Well, that was good, man. I'm like, bro, appreciate it.
- 18:56Speaker 1: You were fun. That was good stuff. Yeah. You were
- 19:00Speaker 1: cruising through town and, and I guess you turned it
- 19:02Speaker 1: into a, when we said, Hey, let's, let's, let's do
- 19:05Speaker 1: this thing. You, you like turned it into visiting some
- 19:07Speaker 1: of your customers and seeing and meeting some, some new ones.
- 19:11Speaker 1: So we're, we're, I'm glad you made dual use of
- 19:13Speaker 1: your time.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Yeah. It's, it's cool because all the time we will hear, Oh,
- 19:18Speaker 2: we'd love to partner. We'd love to partner. We'd love
- 19:20Speaker 2: to partner. And people forget that partnering means partnering. And
- 19:25Speaker 2: you guys actually partner. I said, hey, if I can
- 19:29Speaker 2: help out in any way. And you're like, sure, yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 2: come on in. We'd love to show you.
- 19:32Speaker 1: We'll take up on that.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And then we went out to lunch. And it's like,
- 19:35Speaker 2: these guys actually mean what they say. So it's cool.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Glad to be here.
- 19:39Speaker 1: We're trying to get some free advertising agency stuff for them. Eventually,
- 19:41Speaker 1: we're going to ask. Because we hear you're really good
- 19:45Speaker 1: at it. And so charter schools should absolutely use your company,
- 19:48Speaker 1: for sure, if they want to grow. Yeah, that's really cool.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I know you care, right? And having a leadership that
- 19:57Speaker 1: cares about executing for customers, that's like high on the
- 20:00Speaker 1: list of things to do. And so, you know, just
- 20:03Speaker 1: getting to know you personally, I know that you really
- 20:05Speaker 1: care about the mission of charter school. And, you know,
- 20:09Speaker 1: nothing would speak more volumes to them than having somebody
- 20:11Speaker 1: running the company, helping them grow. They're really, really curious
- 20:13Speaker 1: about it.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Would it be OK if just for maybe like 30 seconds,
- 20:17Speaker 2: I just pound through like what we've learned?
- 20:20Speaker 1: Yeah, go for it.
- 20:21Speaker 2: So and I haven't told anyone this.
- 20:24Speaker 1: OK, all right. All right.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Top secret stuff that is no longer top secret. Like
- 20:28Speaker 2: this is declassified. Like I'm leaking this right now on
- 20:32Speaker 2: this episode. That's awesome. And I'm not saying this is
- 20:35Speaker 2: a perfect system. I'm just saying it's what we're doing now.
- 20:38Speaker 2: We would just kind of hire whoever. And that was
- 20:40Speaker 2: awful in our business. Since then, what we do is
- 20:45Speaker 2: we invite people to a first interview and we ask
- 20:49Speaker 2: them three questions. We ask them, why are manhole covers round?
- 20:53Speaker 2: We give them a really hard calculus problem of the
- 20:56Speaker 2: day that they can simply just Google to find the answer.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Because that's what we want to see is just that
- 21:00Speaker 2: they're willing to Google. And then we give them like
- 21:03Speaker 2: an angry client email to answer and how they'd respond.
- 21:06Speaker 2: And then after they do that, we give them two
- 21:08Speaker 2: books to read. And if they're really interested, they'll read
- 21:11Speaker 2: those books and they'll schedule their second interview. And before
- 21:14Speaker 2: they even get in our candidate pool, we'll take from whoever,
- 21:17Speaker 2: but the most success we've ever had, and here's the
- 21:20Speaker 2: big secret, is my brother's Air Force pilot. We post
- 21:26Speaker 2: our job postings on the Air Force fighter pilot spouse page.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Because they are men and women who are following their
- 21:35Speaker 2: husband or wife They can't really get a job anywhere
- 21:39Speaker 2: because they're always moving. They need a remote gig. They
- 21:42Speaker 2: need flexibility. They're taking care of a family. They don't need,
- 21:46Speaker 2: you know, 401Ks and health insurance. So it's a great
- 21:49Speaker 2: fit for us. And they're so intelligent. Most of them
- 21:52Speaker 2: have master's degrees. They're so accomplished, but they just are
- 21:55Speaker 2: looking for a job because... And the reason I say
- 21:59Speaker 2: that is not for everyone to go on the Fire
- 22:01Speaker 2: Your Pilot spouse page. Right. But just... Ask yourself, like.
- 22:05Speaker 1: You know, just get washed out of that, brother. You're
- 22:07Speaker 1: not one of a million hands. You're like, dude, what
- 22:10Speaker 1: did I say that for?
- 22:11Speaker 2: But the point is just figure out what do you offer? Like,
- 22:15Speaker 2: we offer flexibility. We offer a good hourly wage, maybe
- 22:18Speaker 2: not an incredible salary, but for someone that's looking for, like,
- 22:22Speaker 2: a part-time solid, like, $ 40 an hour, it's like, wow.
- 22:27Speaker 2: And I have two hours a day, like... And intelligent
- 22:30Speaker 2: people who are integrable, like... So whatever you need, try
- 22:36Speaker 2: to find that space and ask yourself, where are the
- 22:39Speaker 2: people that I need? Who do they talk to? And
- 22:42Speaker 2: then find those spaces.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I love that process. When you're growing a business, it's
- 22:47Speaker 1: the people part. It's always important. It's always important. But
- 22:51Speaker 1: when you are this big instead of this big, it's
- 22:55Speaker 1: like mission critical. Yeah, right. You can't have any misses, right?
- 23:02Speaker 1: And everybody... affects your culture. And so what a great
- 23:05Speaker 1: way to do that. That's super cool. Thanks for sharing that.
- 23:06Speaker 1: That was super cool. All right, man, I enjoyed it.
- 23:09Speaker 1: That was good. Well, I hope to see you again soon.
- 23:11Speaker 2: All right, so much.
- 23:11Speaker 1: We'll talk to you later. Thanks for joining us.
