Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is a special KJR Sports presentation. Welcome to the Draft,
- 0:05Speaker 1: the krak NHL Draft Show live from thirty two bar
- 0:08Speaker 1: and Grew with Ian Forness, Everett Fitzier, Al Kiniski and
- 0:12Speaker 1: your host Mike Benton, proudly presented by your home for
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Kraking Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ R FN.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Well, the Kraken picking Chase Reeds seventh overall in the
- 0:25Speaker 2: NHL Entry Draft that continues here into the six pm hour.
- 0:28Speaker 2: As we're about roughly I want to say, about fifteen
- 0:33Speaker 2: picks deep, and there are still namesteen.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Hours fifteen picks into the first round. We will this
- 0:38Speaker 3: is the old NFL draft.
- 0:39Speaker 4: We just might make development camp.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Trades are still happening. We saw Mason mctavis officially has
- 0:48Speaker 2: been moved to the Saint Louis Blues. Not one but
- 0:51Speaker 2: two first round picks involved as well.
- 0:54Speaker 3: JJ Patka got two first j.
- 0:56Speaker 4: J Paturca off to Boston.
- 0:57Speaker 3: So it's got first round pick.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yeah, It's is getting pretty busy right now because he
- 1:02Speaker 2: was moved. Pad del dora Fev was also moved. Andre Borakowski,
- 1:05Speaker 2: old friend, also on the move. By the way, Burkie
- 1:08Speaker 2: is the only guy in the league that doesn't have
- 1:10Speaker 2: a no movement. Claus might be because where he went,
- 1:13Speaker 2: what they got for him, he obviously doesn't have a
- 1:15Speaker 2: no trade Class.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Six six out of Ottawa.
- 1:19Speaker 5: And then just coming down the pipe that Wrenski and
- 1:22Speaker 5: Marchenko in Columbus are both on the block and one.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Out of Columbus.
- 1:27Speaker 6: Wait what Yeah, I thought I thought Seattle was the
- 1:29Speaker 6: only place to people that want to Yeah, exactly, that's weird, weird, strange.
- 1:32Speaker 4: That's not the narrative though, get in the way of
- 1:34Speaker 4: a good story, right.
- 1:36Speaker 5: All I'm saying is Robo turned down Saint Louis, he
- 1:40Speaker 5: turned down Ottawa, like I mean, but but sure hammer Seattle.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Why not because the Kraken weent youth and they got
- 1:49Speaker 2: Chase reed at seventh. Overall, we're gonna recept this for
- 1:52Speaker 2: you right now, because we're also expecting Jason Botterol to
- 1:54Speaker 2: be joining us here inside thirty two Bar and Grill,
- 1:57Speaker 2: and we're gonna keep you posted because the Crackner are
- 1:59Speaker 2: still a parent, are hard at work with what could
- 2:02Speaker 2: be coming up here for round two potential moves made.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But also Chase Reid, my goodness, did they get a
- 2:08Speaker 2: good one seventh overall out of the Sue Greyhounds of
- 2:12Speaker 2: the Ontario Hockey League. We just heard from Chase read
- 2:14Speaker 2: by the way, big thanks to the crew for helping
- 2:16Speaker 2: get him on as well to say hi to the
- 2:18Speaker 2: folks here at thirty two Bar and grill. He's a
- 2:20Speaker 2: Michigan State commit. But you know, you can often sometimes
- 2:24Speaker 2: I think tell not always, but sometimes about a player's
- 2:27Speaker 2: makeup mentally with just how he articulates. And for an
- 2:31Speaker 2: eighteen year old, it just seems like he's got a
- 2:34Speaker 2: lot of it figured out.
- 2:34Speaker 4: As far as the confidence side of things, yeah, he does.
- 2:37Speaker 5: And listen, all of these players nowadays, you've gotten media training.
- 2:41Speaker 5: They've been in front of cameras since they were ten
- 2:44Speaker 5: twelve years old, so they know how to respond and
- 2:47Speaker 5: act in front of a microphone in front of a camera.
- 2:49Speaker 5: That said, when you hear a player speak as eloquently
- 2:53Speaker 5: as he does, when you hear him talk about the
- 2:57Speaker 5: what he needs to work on, when you hear him
- 2:59Speaker 5: talk about things other than just oh, I want to
- 3:02Speaker 5: come help the team win, score goals and have success.
- 3:04Speaker 5: When you have those and you're getting that conversation and
- 3:08Speaker 5: those answers out of him. It really gives you a
- 3:11Speaker 5: peek into the type of person that he is. And
- 3:13Speaker 5: I said it before, a number of players in this
- 3:16Speaker 5: organization have been captains elsewhere. They've won let they've worn letters,
- 3:20Speaker 5: they've won championships, they've been leaders. That has been something
- 3:23Speaker 5: about the Kraken in which we've had leaders in this
- 3:26Speaker 5: dressing room in this organization. And he's another guy that
- 3:29Speaker 5: I think speaks well and is gonna play well for
- 3:31Speaker 5: this team.
- 3:31Speaker 4: So how does Chase rate help turn the Patriot this
- 3:33Speaker 4: roster well?
- 3:34Speaker 2: Joining us right now on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline is
- 3:36Speaker 2: the man, the myth, the legend, the one and only
- 3:39Speaker 2: John Forestland TV play by play voice. Joining us right now,
- 3:43Speaker 2: we have gott enim piped in here at thirty two
- 3:45Speaker 2: bar and grilled Johnny. I know Seattle misses you. It's
- 3:48Speaker 2: Mike Everett al Ian. How much do you miss us?
- 3:50Speaker 4: My friend?
- 3:52Speaker 7: Oh?
- 3:53Speaker 8: Say that one more time. Why don't you say it again?
- 3:55Speaker 8: It sounds good? Michael, Hi, boys, how are you hey?
- 3:58Speaker 9: J J?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Johnny?
- 4:00Speaker 8: All right, all right, long time we missed.
- 4:03Speaker 3: To be missed.
- 4:04Speaker 4: But it's great talking to you once again.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And I think with the this whole small clearing of
- 4:08Speaker 2: Chase Reid going seventh overall, Johnny, And we'll get to
- 4:11Speaker 2: some roster talk here. First out, there was a big
- 4:14Speaker 2: conversation with the whole new cycle spinning out of control
- 4:17Speaker 2: in the last twenty four hours, what do the krakend
- 4:19Speaker 2: do do they keep taking the whole run swing, maybe
- 4:21Speaker 2: with a seventh overall pick, but they leaned into it
- 4:24Speaker 2: and got a guy by some accounts, could have gone
- 4:27Speaker 2: second or maybe even third overall. So what you take
- 4:30Speaker 2: away with adding Chase Reid here to the pipeline.
- 4:33Speaker 9: Well, I mean, obviously everybody's excited about this, and the
- 4:37Speaker 9: fans should be, and the organization obviously is and you know,
- 4:41Speaker 9: sometimes things just happen, and this is you know, a
- 4:44Speaker 9: player that was said to be as high as I
- 4:48Speaker 9: think second rated by some some scouting bureaus or whatever.
- 4:52Speaker 9: So you know, good for him. I mean, there's a
- 4:54Speaker 9: ton of great kids that are going to get drafted tonight.
- 4:57Speaker 9: They all have promised it's a wonderful night everybody. But
- 5:00Speaker 9: he's you know, giddy with potential and that's tremendous. But
- 5:03Speaker 9: it's a positional need number one. It's a player that
- 5:05Speaker 9: can skate. He said, to be a guy that can,
- 5:08Speaker 9: you know, play today's game from the back end.
- 5:10Speaker 8: So all of that is good.
- 5:12Speaker 9: I just hope he gets an opportunity to do what's
- 5:14Speaker 9: right for him, develop the right way and see where
- 5:17Speaker 9: it takes them.
- 5:17Speaker 8: But it's a great night for the Crack.
- 5:19Speaker 9: And there's no question because you know, he was high
- 5:22Speaker 9: on everybody else's list, and the way the chips fell,
- 5:25Speaker 9: you know here he is at number seven, So that's
- 5:28Speaker 9: that's great.
- 5:28Speaker 8: Good good job, John.
- 5:30Speaker 6: Good to hear your voice. I'm lucky enough to get
- 5:33Speaker 6: a hang out with the Crack and Audio Network crew.
- 5:36Speaker 6: These guys let me hang out with them today. I
- 5:38Speaker 6: appreciate of that, so it's good to hear your voice.
- 5:40Speaker 3: They've been buying.
- 5:40Speaker 8: They're nice guys.
- 5:41Speaker 6: Sometimes well they're making they're making me buy drinks and dinner,
- 5:45Speaker 6: so I guess.
- 5:45Speaker 8: Usually on Friday nights they're really good guys.
- 5:50Speaker 6: Hey, John, what's your read on the Jason Robertson thing?
- 5:53Speaker 6: And we were just talking before you came on, Everett
- 5:56Speaker 6: and I specifically about it's interesting that Columbus is, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 6: seeing two of their best players, a Norris Trophy winner
- 6:02Speaker 6: and maybe a top winger that can score maybe one
- 6:05Speaker 6: out of Columbus, and yet Seattle's the one that seems
- 6:08Speaker 6: to be in the crosshairs of many national media and
- 6:10Speaker 6: others like, hey, guys, don't want to go there and
- 6:13Speaker 6: what have you. I know, you've got to change the
- 6:15Speaker 6: perception by winning on the ice. But you're around this league.
- 6:18Speaker 6: You just did the Stanley Cup finals. What's your read
- 6:20Speaker 6: on the Jason Robertson thing and how Seattle looks in
- 6:23Speaker 6: this situation?
- 6:25Speaker 9: Hey, listen, and Ian I endured ten years in Carolina
- 6:29Speaker 9: where it was a barren waste slang where nobody wanted
- 6:32Speaker 9: to play there, okay, where relocation rumors were abounding, where
- 6:36Speaker 9: there's an ownership situation. They finally settled that and they
- 6:40Speaker 9: turned the corner and they cycled into an eight year
- 6:43Speaker 9: run of greatness and now a Stanley Cup championship. Right,
- 6:46Speaker 9: So this is kind of the way the league is.
- 6:48Speaker 9: And I think once you get over the personal aspect,
- 6:52Speaker 9: when a player like this says no, and I'm like
- 6:56Speaker 9: the fans, I'm like you guys, you know, everybody's like, really,
- 6:59Speaker 9: you know what's going on? And then everybody kind of
- 7:02Speaker 9: piles on and they're slamming Seattle and all these different things.
- 7:06Speaker 8: I basically look at it this way.
- 7:08Speaker 9: You know, I really believe, and I haven't talked to
- 7:12Speaker 9: anybody about this, but I got a feeling that part
- 7:15Speaker 9: of Jason Robertson's decision to say no to the Kraken
- 7:19Speaker 9: and Saint Louis and if there was another team okay,
- 7:22Speaker 9: is the fact that he might not want out of
- 7:24Speaker 9: Dallas at all.
- 7:26Speaker 8: And the only way for him to leverage.
- 7:29Speaker 9: The kind of money that he wants once the Stars
- 7:32Speaker 9: wouldn't go there, and why would they because he's a
- 7:34Speaker 9: restricted free agent. So the Stars are using the system too,
- 7:38Speaker 9: they're playing the game. He's going to do this and
- 7:41Speaker 9: unless there's some deal that strikes before July one, and
- 7:45Speaker 9: I don't think there will be because the two deals
- 7:48Speaker 9: that were on the table, and I believe there were multiple.
- 7:50Speaker 8: First round draft choices.
- 7:52Speaker 9: Going the other way out of Seattle for this player
- 7:55Speaker 9: in addition to all that money, you know, what's going
- 7:57Speaker 9: to happen is he might have to accept his qualifying
- 8:00Speaker 9: and if he does, then he'll become a restricted free
- 8:03Speaker 9: agent and they can go to arbitration if they want.
- 8:06Speaker 9: They can entertain a situation as they get closer to
- 8:10Speaker 9: camp where the team has more leverage on him, or
- 8:13Speaker 9: he then holds out and has leverage on the Dallas Stars,
- 8:18Speaker 9: or it's a situation where he gets off for sheeted
- 8:21Speaker 9: and if he gets offer sheeted, then Dallas will have
- 8:24Speaker 9: two choices match.
- 8:25Speaker 8: It, keep the player, which they might do, or get.
- 8:28Speaker 9: The four draft choices, not two first round picks three
- 8:31Speaker 9: first round picks before. So I really believe this was
- 8:35Speaker 9: a great effort by whatever team got in there, and
- 8:38Speaker 9: certainly for the Kraken to swing big, because they should.
- 8:42Speaker 9: And if you strike out, you go to the dugout
- 8:44Speaker 9: and you bat again. You don't just quit the game.
- 8:46Speaker 9: So hopefully they'll keep on swinging. And it shows the fans,
- 8:50Speaker 9: it shows everybody around the team, the players especially that
- 8:53Speaker 9: they're serious about trying to turn the ship around.
- 8:56Speaker 8: And you go from there.
- 8:58Speaker 9: But this is you know, Jason Robert and really isn't
- 9:00Speaker 9: public enemy number one either.
- 9:02Speaker 8: This is his right too as a player. And we're
- 9:06Speaker 8: seeing a change.
- 9:07Speaker 9: Now in the league where the players are getting more
- 9:09Speaker 9: control of their own destiny and as a growing team,
- 9:13Speaker 9: and I hate to remind everybody, but the Cracking are
- 9:15Speaker 9: still growing, you know, you're going to have to live
- 9:18Speaker 9: with it until you reach that level. And once everybody
- 9:23Speaker 9: accepts the reality, not just different perceptions of what it might.
- 9:27Speaker 8: Be, everything will be okay, you know.
- 9:30Speaker 9: And it starts by getting an opportunity to have a
- 9:34Speaker 9: kid like Chase Red, you know, join the fold. That's
- 9:38Speaker 9: a step, that's a big step in the right direction
- 9:40Speaker 9: if he pans out like everybody believes he will. So
- 9:44Speaker 9: that's my take on it. I think it's part of
- 9:46Speaker 9: the business right now.
- 9:47Speaker 8: We'll see where it goes.
- 9:49Speaker 9: I would hope the crack and continue to try and
- 9:52Speaker 9: make some things happen they need to, and we'll just
- 9:55Speaker 9: see what happens down the pike.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Here, Johnny.
- 9:58Speaker 10: Player development has been a hot top coming out of
- 10:00Speaker 10: the audit as of late. The krack and addam Justin
- 10:02Speaker 10: Schultz from Cracking Player to the mix to help improve that.
- 10:07Speaker 10: We've talked a little bit about player development over the
- 10:09Speaker 10: over the years. How important is it to add a
- 10:12Speaker 10: guy like Justin Schultz and continue to look for ways
- 10:15Speaker 10: to improve player development, especially with the kracken now getting
- 10:19Speaker 10: one more young prospect and read.
- 10:25Speaker 8: That's a great question.
- 10:26Speaker 9: Now, I think you know the by adding a player
- 10:30Speaker 9: that's recently retired, you get a better handle on where
- 10:34Speaker 9: it needs to be for some of these younger players.
- 10:37Speaker 9: So the for the younger player, it's someone that they
- 10:40Speaker 9: can look to that's highly relatable, that they probably remember,
- 10:45Speaker 9: and that's important.
- 10:47Speaker 8: And most importantly, I just think.
- 10:49Speaker 9: You know, the more, the merrier, you know, the more
- 10:51Speaker 9: they can fortify that area of the organization, the better.
- 10:54Speaker 8: I think in my own opinion, I have no idea.
- 10:57Speaker 9: If what the audit showed as far as they're pro
- 10:59Speaker 9: scouting is concerned, but I think they could look at that,
- 11:02Speaker 9: you know, because we're not just talking about the home
- 11:05Speaker 9: run hit.
- 11:06Speaker 8: We're talking about.
- 11:08Speaker 9: Doubles and singles that add up in different slots down
- 11:11Speaker 9: your lineup, and you know, and we talked about this
- 11:15Speaker 9: at the end of the season. I still believe it.
- 11:18Speaker 9: I for one, and I said it at the time.
- 11:20Speaker 9: Was disappointed they didn't they didn't move on from a
- 11:23Speaker 9: lot of their said to be free agents at the
- 11:25Speaker 9: trading deadline. I thought that would have been a way
- 11:28Speaker 9: to go. They elected to kind of hold their ground
- 11:30Speaker 9: and hope.
- 11:31Speaker 8: For the best.
- 11:32Speaker 9: Now some of those players are likely to move on,
- 11:34Speaker 9: and that's okay because I think the crack and need
- 11:36Speaker 9: a bit of a facelift, and so you have to
- 11:39Speaker 9: have a strong pro scouting department. If you look at
- 11:41Speaker 9: the best team in the league right now, the Hurricanes
- 11:44Speaker 9: do a lot.
- 11:44Speaker 8: Of things right and one of the things they do really.
- 11:46Speaker 9: Really well is scout the pros and slot guys where
- 11:50Speaker 9: they need to slot. So if you need a fourth
- 11:52Speaker 9: line player that fits your system, you know where to
- 11:55Speaker 9: go for that. If you need a high end guy,
- 11:57Speaker 9: then you know how to shoot for that too. So
- 12:00Speaker 9: to me, that's a big part of the game today
- 12:02Speaker 9: in scouting. It is player development, no question. But as
- 12:06Speaker 9: you developed those players and allow them to marinate, you
- 12:09Speaker 9: got to make sure that your your your eighteen is fortified,
- 12:14Speaker 9: you know, and that's that's that's sometimes very small moves.
- 12:18Speaker 9: You look at the role again, I go back as
- 12:20Speaker 9: they just saw them about a week ago.
- 12:22Speaker 8: Eric Robinson with Carolina on their fourth line.
- 12:24Speaker 9: Jankowski will carry a All three guys had different journeys
- 12:28Speaker 9: to get to where they're at. But Robinson was in
- 12:30Speaker 9: the American Hockey League when they signed him. He wasn't
- 12:33Speaker 9: even in the NHL, and he slots into their system.
- 12:36Speaker 9: You know, that seems to be part of the trick
- 12:38Speaker 9: today in the NHL.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Always insightful. We appreciate you.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Johnny Banks a mus get caught up here on some
- 12:44Speaker 2: rest and we'll get you back out here to Seattle
- 12:46Speaker 2: sooner here then later looking forward to a budon.
- 12:49Speaker 8: Okay, you guys, keep up the great work. Good luck.
- 12:52Speaker 9: You're on all day tomorrow or are they gonna let
- 12:53Speaker 9: you go tonight?
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we're going as deep as we can here for tonight.
- 12:57Speaker 2: But where we're going to find that the end the
- 12:59Speaker 2: end zone of this at some point somehow. But appreciate you.
- 13:02Speaker 8: The other guys. Go home, Mike, and you work. You
- 13:04Speaker 8: work all day tomorrow, Michael.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Okay, that's right. Second, all right.
- 13:10Speaker 8: Round and God bless you.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Take care guys, you too, John Forestland joining us here
- 13:15Speaker 2: on the Beacon Plumbing hotline once again as we're back
- 13:17Speaker 2: at thirty two Bar and grill, Mike Benton Everett fits
- 13:19Speaker 2: you Al Kaniski as well, and please to be joined
- 13:23Speaker 2: live here at the set by Robert Kronk, kind of
- 13:25Speaker 2: keeping the Carolina Hurricanes connection going here for the past
- 13:28Speaker 2: now to the future. Of course, he is the cracking
- 13:30Speaker 2: director of Amateur Scouting. Robert, Thank you. Very much for
- 13:33Speaker 2: joining us. How are things holding up here on the
- 13:35Speaker 2: on the very back end.
- 13:37Speaker 11: No, it's it's really good.
- 13:38Speaker 7: You know, we're really happy with what it just happened
- 13:41Speaker 7: for us, so that the room was excited. Uh, you know,
- 13:45Speaker 7: we're enjoying this moment. And yeah, we're having good time
- 13:48Speaker 7: right now.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Take us through Chase reed number seven.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Overall, by many accounts, he could have been gone by
- 13:54Speaker 2: about second or third.
- 13:56Speaker 4: But what kind of player are you getting here for
- 13:58Speaker 4: the future.
- 13:59Speaker 7: Yeah, we're getting a really really good two way, offensive
- 14:02Speaker 7: minded defenseman, excellent skater, great kid, hard working kid, confident.
- 14:08Speaker 7: You know, we're throat like, we're really happy that, you know,
- 14:11Speaker 7: we didn't really expect that, uh, that that Chase is
- 14:14Speaker 7: gonna be there for us, and and and he worked
- 14:16Speaker 7: out perfectly for us. I think that, you know, the
- 14:18Speaker 7: whole scouting staff is so excited to have this guy
- 14:21Speaker 7: in our organization.
- 14:22Speaker 6: There, Robert, what's the thank you mikey? Uh, Mike, he
- 14:26Speaker 6: likes to turn me down. I don't think he wasn't
- 14:27Speaker 6: talking today.
- 14:28Speaker 8: I don't know what you know.
- 14:30Speaker 6: I don't believe him, Robert, what's the path for what's
- 14:33Speaker 6: the realistic path for Chase?
- 14:34Speaker 3: Reek.
- 14:34Speaker 6: He's a late birthday young player, but he's gonna go
- 14:37Speaker 6: play at Michigan State next season. Do we see him
- 14:39Speaker 6: here next week? Can he come back in the fall?
- 14:41Speaker 6: What's the path and what could you tell fans about
- 14:43Speaker 6: kind of what you think? I mean, you don't know,
- 14:45Speaker 6: but just in the near future, what's the path for him?
- 14:47Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 14:47Speaker 7: Obviously, like he's going to Michigan State, which is a
- 14:50Speaker 7: great place for him to be. We'll see how how
- 14:53Speaker 7: that develops for him. Uh, you know, Corey Murphy and
- 14:56Speaker 7: and our development stuff. We'll we'll get our hands on
- 15:00Speaker 7: him and they'll be talking to him. So we'll see how
- 15:03Speaker 7: that plays out. And it's like really new right now,
- 15:06Speaker 7: but we're excited for Chase to be with the organization
- 15:11Speaker 7: and I think that he's going to be here suited
- 15:14Speaker 7: earlier Robert coming into the draft.
- 15:17Speaker 10: One of the things we've heard in past drafts is
- 15:20Speaker 10: that the krackt like to pick best available at their pick.
- 15:24Speaker 10: I also think that I don't know this, but you
- 15:27Speaker 10: tell me. There seemed to be maybe a focus on
- 15:29Speaker 10: the blue line going to this draft. Could both things
- 15:32Speaker 10: be true in the case of Chase Read that not
- 15:35Speaker 10: only were you considering a blue liner. But in this case,
- 15:39Speaker 10: it was the best available in that you probably expected
- 15:42Speaker 10: him to be off the board by the time it
- 15:43Speaker 10: got the number seven.
- 15:45Speaker 7: Yeah, we we'd like to stick with the best available
- 15:48Speaker 7: the way we see it, you know, we're built out
- 15:50Speaker 7: a board, and Chase was the next man up basically,
- 15:54Speaker 7: and and you know, we really don't want to say
- 15:58Speaker 7: where we had him, but no, the excitement of having
- 16:03Speaker 7: chased you know, the room just exploded. So yeah, no,
- 16:09Speaker 7: it was the best player in our best player available
- 16:12Speaker 7: in our minds at that point.
- 16:13Speaker 3: And yeah, the excitement. HOWI right now.
- 16:16Speaker 11: Robert joining us?
- 16:17Speaker 5: Robert, I ask you this question every year, and I
- 16:19Speaker 5: think it's still relevant because this is still a very
- 16:22Speaker 5: a new NHL fan base. And now folks will say
- 16:25Speaker 5: that day two, that's when the hard work begins, trying
- 16:28Speaker 5: to identify those diamonds in the rough. And again, without
- 16:32Speaker 5: giving away too much of your strategy, what is that
- 16:35Speaker 5: plan going into tomorrow?
- 16:37Speaker 3: Do you have a list of.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Names it is it a need base, is it a
- 16:41Speaker 5: we were we're looking for a guy who can't help
- 16:44Speaker 5: us down the road long term as opposed to to
- 16:47Speaker 5: next season. What's that philosophy for rounds two through seven.
- 16:50Speaker 7: Yeah, well, basically we have a board that goes all
- 16:53Speaker 7: the way through the seventh round, and you know, the
- 16:55Speaker 7: players that are being selected today, they're going off that board.
- 16:59Speaker 7: So this day is over, we're going to revisit that
- 17:03Speaker 7: board look at it. But we do have a plan
- 17:04Speaker 7: for tomorrow. If history we're going at thirty eight pick
- 17:07Speaker 7: right now and we don't have a third, we have
- 17:10Speaker 7: two picks into fourth, So yeah, we have a plan
- 17:12Speaker 7: for tomorrow. We'll see how this is developed over the
- 17:16Speaker 7: next few hours and how many players are left and
- 17:19Speaker 7: outer board from top fifty.
- 17:21Speaker 5: And for you as director image scouting and for your staff,
- 17:25Speaker 5: what determines a successful draft. Obviously these players, we won't
- 17:30Speaker 5: know what they can bring, what they can do for
- 17:32Speaker 5: a few years down the road. But tomorrow afternoon, when
- 17:35Speaker 5: you guys wrap up in an ESPN turns the cameras off,
- 17:38Speaker 5: what in your mind will consider touch your success?
- 17:44Speaker 7: Well, for us, it's looking for the future. You know,
- 17:47Speaker 7: you'd like to walk away from from a draft day
- 17:50Speaker 7: with the one or two players that will play, you know,
- 17:52Speaker 7: over two hundred games in NHL and make it. And
- 17:55Speaker 7: then you know, as you all know, this is a
- 17:57Speaker 7: difficult league to crack. Yeah, these young men, they have
- 18:01Speaker 7: a road ahead of them. This is just the first step.
- 18:04Speaker 7: But for us as a scouting staff and the organization,
- 18:06Speaker 7: if you can grab a player that plays one or
- 18:09Speaker 7: two players from a draft, then that's successful draft.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Robert, we heard Jason Botterol talk a lot about the
- 18:14Speaker 2: youth and how much potential is there down the road,
- 18:17Speaker 2: what the future means here for this franchise, and this
- 18:20Speaker 2: kind of comes off the heels of getting Berkeley Catton
- 18:23Speaker 2: two years ago. Jacobrien, a year ago you had Chase Reed,
- 18:26Speaker 2: and we've heard a lot more about a guy like
- 18:28Speaker 2: Oscar Fisco Muleguard.
- 18:29Speaker 4: What are you building?
- 18:30Speaker 2: What does the Kraken system look like right now as
- 18:34Speaker 2: far as what it could translate to a year here
- 18:36Speaker 2: here for a few years down the road.
- 18:37Speaker 7: Well, I think this is kind of a more question
- 18:40Speaker 7: for Jason, but we believe that we have pieces in
- 18:45Speaker 7: our organization right now that the future looks bright.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Like we're really.
- 18:49Speaker 7: Happy what's materializing for us here. And you know, the
- 18:52Speaker 7: young guys growing up together, even in CV and even
- 18:55Speaker 7: adding Chase and like you mentioned Barkley, you know, you
- 18:59Speaker 7: know O'Brien and all these guys like plus mogart Is.
- 19:04Speaker 7: You know, he's played in men's hockey Olympic Games. You know,
- 19:08Speaker 7: World Championship is making stride. So I think we have
- 19:12Speaker 7: really good young bass here and fans should be excited
- 19:15Speaker 7: for future.
- 19:16Speaker 6: Robert Kron Directorimetris kind of the cracking with us. Don't worry,
- 19:18Speaker 6: Box is coming up. We're gonna put him on the
- 19:20Speaker 6: grill in just a second once we once we turn
- 19:23Speaker 6: you loose, I want to go back just to chase
- 19:25Speaker 6: for a second. First of all, what I heard from
- 19:27Speaker 6: you is he was the number one player on your board.
- 19:28Speaker 6: You would have taken him number one overall. Right, I
- 19:32Speaker 6: think that's what I was reading into what you said.
- 19:34Speaker 6: I just young co signed that for you. Yeah, oh
- 19:37Speaker 6: young player. But every player is different, like not all
- 19:41Speaker 6: sixteen or seventeen or eighteen year olds are made the same.
- 19:44Speaker 6: You're you're kind of insinuator. You think he's kind of
- 19:46Speaker 6: a fast track. He played World Juniors last year as
- 19:48Speaker 6: a young player, which is that's impressive, Like you, I
- 19:51Speaker 6: was gonna look at that kind of a barometer. He
- 19:53Speaker 6: just turned seventeen. Yeah, yeah, just turn seventeen. When you
- 19:56Speaker 6: watch him physically does does that up out it? Does
- 20:00Speaker 6: he look like a seventeen year old? Is he kind
- 20:02Speaker 6: of developing already in that regard.
- 20:04Speaker 7: Well, what's exciting about him is he's still not physically
- 20:08Speaker 7: completely mature, like he's almost sixty three, but there's there's
- 20:12Speaker 7: room to grow, you know, muscles to put on. He
- 20:15Speaker 7: is a strong kid already. But like you said, playing
- 20:18Speaker 7: at the young age at the World Junior that's not easy,
- 20:21Speaker 7: especially for defenseman. And and he was arguably the best
- 20:24Speaker 7: defenseman for the US team over there, So you know,
- 20:28Speaker 7: it's very exciting. Like obviously this is you gotta be
- 20:31Speaker 7: careful for these kids. They they think it's easy to
- 20:34Speaker 7: do it, but it's not that easy. So you know,
- 20:38Speaker 7: it's really up to him now, and well will help
- 20:40Speaker 7: him anyway possible. We'll give him all the opportunities to
- 20:43Speaker 7: get there.
- 20:43Speaker 6: That jumps out at me what you just said. I
- 20:45Speaker 6: think that's important for fans to know you're you're saying it.
- 20:48Speaker 6: As the youngest defenseman on that team USA roster, he
- 20:51Speaker 6: might have been their best defenseman. That's really that jumps out.
- 20:54Speaker 3: You don't see that you.
- 20:55Speaker 6: Watch these tournaments every year, Yeah, you don't see that often.
- 20:58Speaker 3: No, like that.
- 20:59Speaker 7: You know, that's for really, he kind of put himself
- 21:01Speaker 7: from the mop. I think in a lot of teams boards,
- 21:04Speaker 7: I think that you know, I don't want to speak
- 21:06Speaker 7: for others, but uh, you know.
- 21:08Speaker 11: This kid, this kid gets it.
- 21:10Speaker 7: He had a set bag when he was younger, and
- 21:12Speaker 7: Waterloo got to oh how became a point per game
- 21:15Speaker 7: defense from back to back and you know, there's lots
- 21:18Speaker 7: to like about his spot and where he's going.
- 21:20Speaker 3: And we're we're really excited about.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Robert, you and others are building quite the trail of
- 21:25Speaker 2: talent right now. And go ahead and celebrate Chase freet seventh. Overall,
- 21:28Speaker 2: I know it's getting still getting pretty busy back there
- 21:30Speaker 2: for day two, but I appreciate your time.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Thanks Robert.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Robert Cron joining us here Crack and director of Amateurs
- 21:36Speaker 2: Scouting as Night number one of the NHL Draft rolls
- 21:40Speaker 2: on Where You're Expecting GM Jason Botterol Right around the
- 21:43Speaker 2: Corner Heroes Covers continues live from thirty two Bar and
- 21:45Speaker 2: Real right here on ninety three to three kJ RFM.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Now back to the NHL Draft Show with your host
- 22:06Speaker 1: Mike Benton, live from thirty two Bar and Grill presented
- 22:09Speaker 1: by your Home for the Kraken. Sports Radio ninety three
- 22:12Speaker 1: point three kjr FM.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Eighteen picks into the NHL draft of the Krack and
- 22:18Speaker 2: we're on the run to find potentially a game breaker.
- 22:21Speaker 2: And let's just say that Chase was on and they
- 22:24Speaker 2: got their guy, Mike Benton ever fits you al koniski
- 22:27Speaker 2: Ian forness lie back at thirty two Bar and Grill
- 22:30Speaker 2: is Chase reed to the Kraken at seventh overall and
- 22:33Speaker 2: the guy who got him joins us now.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Without further ado.
- 22:36Speaker 2: This is cracking, GM Jason Botterol live inside thirty two
- 22:40Speaker 2: Bar and Grill Jason, great to have you, but also
- 22:43Speaker 2: the folks also great to have you as well here
- 22:45Speaker 2: at the at the A set.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Appreciate you joining us there.
- 22:47Speaker 12: No, thank you very much. Excited night for our entire organization.
- 22:50Speaker 12: Just wanted to thank everybody for coming out here tonight.
- 22:53Speaker 12: It's great the passion that we have in this city.
- 22:56Speaker 12: You know, we see it in at Climate Pledgering every night.
- 22:59Speaker 12: But it's also so that when we were talking a
- 23:01Speaker 12: lot with Bobby McMahon on just why he wanted to
- 23:03Speaker 12: re sign with us, the energy of the fan base,
- 23:06Speaker 12: the passion from the fan base, So thank you so much.
- 23:08Speaker 11: Really do appreciate it.
- 23:09Speaker 2: The energy spike that was Bobby McMahon he got earlier
- 23:12Speaker 2: on Sunday, and now it is Chase Reid. Also around
- 23:15Speaker 2: the Mackie Samuskeavish Traders, Jason Bottle again joining us live
- 23:18Speaker 2: here at the set. But we were talking to Robert
- 23:20Speaker 2: Cron a few moments ago, just glowing about the guy
- 23:23Speaker 2: that this team got to you at number seven.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Ye, Chase Reid. What doesn't mean for this organization?
- 23:30Speaker 12: Well, you know, going into the draft, you try to
- 23:32Speaker 12: figure out all these different scenarios, all these mock drafts,
- 23:35Speaker 12: and obviously we didn't expect Chase to drop to us,
- 23:38Speaker 12: but ecstatic to have him on board here. We just
- 23:40Speaker 12: think his game fits lane system so well. From that
- 23:42Speaker 12: standpoint you watched the videos. He always has his head up.
- 23:46Speaker 12: He has a bit the skating ability to get out
- 23:47Speaker 12: of trouble. He also has the hockey sense to make
- 23:50Speaker 12: the right play to get up very quickly goes forwards.
- 23:52Speaker 12: You look at him as a late bloomer. He can
- 23:55Speaker 12: continue to improve his game that sort of heads up mentally,
- 23:58Speaker 12: that hockey sense that he had, as I think allowed
- 24:01Speaker 12: him to make the easy transition to playing at the
- 24:03Speaker 12: World Juniors this year at Christmas time. So we just
- 24:07Speaker 12: think his natural game, how he plays, is going to
- 24:10Speaker 12: be fit perfectly into our group.
- 24:12Speaker 6: Bot's how surprised were you that he slipped down to
- 24:15Speaker 6: where you were picking, because a lot of folks had
- 24:17Speaker 6: him and who knows what the marks, But I mean,
- 24:19Speaker 6: we just talked to Robert Cron a moment ago and
- 24:22Speaker 6: it's he was elated. Yeah, is this one of those
- 24:24Speaker 6: situations where you had a guy that slipped and you
- 24:27Speaker 6: were like, Wow, I can't believe he's there.
- 24:29Speaker 12: Well, I have to use I just sat it downstairs
- 24:31Speaker 12: to the media, you know, I have to use the line,
- 24:33Speaker 12: the GM line that everyone says at every draft, I
- 24:35Speaker 12: can't believe he was still there, right, you know, everyone
- 24:37Speaker 12: just says that.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Is just the time.
- 24:38Speaker 12: It's true that, you know, but we were high five
- 24:41Speaker 12: in each other for sure, and there like there was
- 24:42Speaker 12: a lot of excitement just to fit with our organization.
- 24:45Speaker 12: The fact that it's been well document we've used a
- 24:47Speaker 12: lot of high picks on on centermen and forwards, and
- 24:52Speaker 12: the fact that we didn't have to force this, that
- 24:54Speaker 12: this was the best player on our board and it
- 24:56Speaker 12: fits a real need for us in our organization. Just
- 24:59Speaker 12: made it, you know, a great night for our group.
- 25:01Speaker 12: So these amateur scouts, the amount of hours that they
- 25:04Speaker 12: put in not only just going to games, you know,
- 25:08Speaker 12: flying all over the world, but then doing the due
- 25:11Speaker 12: diligence finding out about these players, going through the meetings,
- 25:14Speaker 12: and you know, trying to evaluate a player from like
- 25:17Speaker 12: Chase from Sue Saint Marie and compared that to a
- 25:21Speaker 12: player in Minnesota high school, compare that to a player
- 25:23Speaker 12: in you know.
- 25:24Speaker 11: The Swedish Elite League.
- 25:25Speaker 12: It's very very difficult, and they put a lot of
- 25:28Speaker 12: time in, they work extremely hard, and for to sort
- 25:31Speaker 12: of fall our way in our minds and get a
- 25:33Speaker 12: player like Chase is very rewarding and very exciting.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Piggybacking off that, do you go into drafts with a plan,
- 25:40Speaker 5: and I'll use this year as an example. You knew
- 25:43Speaker 5: that defense was an area of organizational need. Did you
- 25:46Speaker 5: go into this draft saying we need to address the
- 25:48Speaker 5: defenseman or what? Is it truly a best player available
- 25:53Speaker 5: or is it a case by case basis.
- 25:55Speaker 12: I truly believe it has to be best player available,
- 25:58Speaker 12: And just look where our team's at right now. Need
- 26:00Speaker 12: to continue to improve in a lot of different areas, right,
- 26:02Speaker 12: But you know the biggest thing is you start going
- 26:04Speaker 12: by need. At the end of the day, there's still
- 26:06Speaker 12: eighteen year old kids. It's still going to be a progression.
- 26:09Speaker 12: When Chase makes the National Hockey League, you know whatever,
- 26:11Speaker 12: the timeframe is, one, two, three years, like so many
- 26:14Speaker 12: different things can change, but this is not the NFL.
- 26:17Speaker 12: This is not where they're stepping the next year, and
- 26:18Speaker 12: there's a specific role exactly that all the time, you know.
- 26:21Speaker 12: But that's what God doess say, is that we didn't
- 26:24Speaker 12: force it here and it did help us with a
- 26:26Speaker 12: positional need and within our organization too.
- 26:28Speaker 10: Jason, his hockey sense and skating seem to be two
- 26:31Speaker 10: of his best attributes. Maybe you agree, maybe you don't,
- 26:34Speaker 10: but just talk a little bit about what you think
- 26:36Speaker 10: some of his best attributes are and what maybe you're
- 26:39Speaker 10: going to be leading into a little bit this summer
- 26:40Speaker 10: to say, hey, let's let's work on this stuff.
- 26:42Speaker 12: Well as an eighteen year old kid, they all can
- 26:44Speaker 12: get stronger, right, It's the same things we're talking to
- 26:47Speaker 12: Berkeley Caton about, or Shane Wright or Maddy Benier's and
- 26:50Speaker 12: even talking to a player like Jordan Eberley, even in
- 26:53Speaker 12: late stages and his career get stronger, finding different ways
- 26:56Speaker 12: to do that in the summer. But with someone like
- 26:57Speaker 12: Chase you're talking about that, it's going to be great
- 26:59Speaker 12: for him to be here next week, get to see
- 27:01Speaker 12: the Pacific Northwest, get to see our facilities here.
- 27:04Speaker 11: But if you're talking.
- 27:05Speaker 12: About his strength, it certainly is his speed, right, his
- 27:07Speaker 12: skating ability in his hockey sense, you know, and I
- 27:10Speaker 12: touched on it a little bit before, you know the
- 27:12Speaker 12: fact that he can, you know, handle a four check.
- 27:15Speaker 12: He can you know, do a great job because his
- 27:17Speaker 12: head is always up. It's just natural for him to
- 27:19Speaker 12: skate with his head up. And then you look at
- 27:22Speaker 12: him sort of just how he moves across the blue
- 27:24Speaker 12: line very well.
- 27:25Speaker 10: You know.
- 27:25Speaker 12: We can see that attributes of being a good power
- 27:27Speaker 12: play guy even at the next level too. So those
- 27:29Speaker 12: sort of type of elements I think are going to
- 27:31Speaker 12: look really good.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Jason Bodrool joining a slide here at thirty two bar
- 27:34Speaker 2: and grills the crack and picking Chase Reid at number
- 27:37Speaker 2: seven overall out of the OHL you mentioned development camp,
- 27:40Speaker 2: How fun is it going to be? To watch these
- 27:42Speaker 2: guys and have him jump into the mix. And I
- 27:44Speaker 2: think just from an overall scope, now that you've got him,
- 27:47Speaker 2: you've got Berkeley Katton now in this farm system, Jacobrien,
- 27:50Speaker 2: what could the krack and organization look like a few
- 27:54Speaker 2: years down the road from this pipeline that they are growing.
- 27:56Speaker 12: Well, it's exciting part of it, right, and there's always
- 27:59Speaker 12: a delay aspect of but you want them to get
- 28:01Speaker 12: to the National Hockey League so quickly. We were spoiled
- 28:04Speaker 12: with Matty Benier's right off the bat, right in this
- 28:06Speaker 12: first year, coming out and getting into the National Hockeyue
- 28:08Speaker 12: right away, But it takes time for so many other players.
- 28:11Speaker 12: And you finally saw that this past year with Jacob
- 28:14Speaker 12: Malants and Ryan Windard and being ready for the National
- 28:17Speaker 12: Hockey League. Those are kids from our first draft. It
- 28:20Speaker 12: takes that much long from that from them to to
- 28:22Speaker 12: develop there. But you know, you look at different mock
- 28:25Speaker 12: sort of scenarios we have with our roster next year,
- 28:28Speaker 12: you know, in our forward groups. You know, we'll see
- 28:30Speaker 12: how things progress over the next couple of weeks here,
- 28:32Speaker 12: but there's different scenarios where we could have six or
- 28:34Speaker 12: seven kids, you know, twenty three or younger in our
- 28:37Speaker 12: forward group on opening night and just having that many
- 28:40Speaker 12: young players, you know, I think it's going to be
- 28:42Speaker 12: great for our organization. One, there's an opportunity for development,
- 28:45Speaker 12: but there's there's a speed aspect, there's an energy aspect
- 28:48Speaker 12: of youthfulness that I think they can really bring to
- 28:50Speaker 12: our group. And it's going to be important that we
- 28:52Speaker 12: surround them with the right leaders, the right players to say,
- 28:55Speaker 12: alleviate some of the pressures on it. That's why we
- 28:57Speaker 12: were excited to certainly get our captain last year, arch
- 29:00Speaker 12: and and Jordan Emily resign. That's why we're excited to
- 29:02Speaker 12: bring in Bobby McMahon again because we think he can
- 29:05Speaker 12: be a good mentor and not only being a good
- 29:06Speaker 12: player on the ice for our group.
- 29:08Speaker 6: Well, Jason, it's been eventful five days for sure, starting Sunday.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Sunday was a great day, awesome day.
- 29:13Speaker 6: We'll get to some of those guys, not just Bobby,
- 29:15Speaker 6: but yep, the other new edition. What can you tell
- 29:17Speaker 6: us about the Jason Robertson situation that you guys kind
- 29:20Speaker 6: of felt like got drug into a little bit.
- 29:22Speaker 3: I'm sure not by your choice.
- 29:23Speaker 12: No, Look, it's a situation where I'm not going to
- 29:26Speaker 12: talk about another players and another team's player right now
- 29:29Speaker 12: from that standpoint, but I'll just talk in bigger sort
- 29:32Speaker 12: of the bigger picture of things. We're going to continue
- 29:34Speaker 12: to be very aggressive across the board and trying to
- 29:36Speaker 12: find different ways to help our organization. And you know,
- 29:39Speaker 12: we've been from a trade standpoint, from a free agent
- 29:42Speaker 12: standpoint in the past. We'll continue to be aggressive and
- 29:45Speaker 12: trying to find ways to help our group. And like
- 29:47Speaker 12: we said, we think we have a lot of great
- 29:49Speaker 12: young pieces coming. We want to make sure that we're
- 29:51Speaker 12: supporting those young pieces that the burden's not all on
- 29:54Speaker 12: them from a development standpoint, And you know, the last
- 29:57Speaker 12: few days we've been aggressive and trying to do different things.
- 29:59Speaker 12: Look the free agent market, there's not a lot of
- 30:02Speaker 12: sort of high end elite players this year with the
- 30:04Speaker 12: cap escalating, most players or most teams have signed their
- 30:07Speaker 12: own guys. So I think you're seeing throughout the league
- 30:10Speaker 12: a lot of trades going on right now. That's how
- 30:13Speaker 12: teams see that how they can improve their team. One
- 30:16Speaker 12: of the reasons I think too, a lot of teams
- 30:18Speaker 12: right now aren't looking for draft capital in trades. They're
- 30:20Speaker 12: looking for players, a lot of hockey for hockey trades.
- 30:23Speaker 12: It's part of the reason why we jumped on the
- 30:24Speaker 12: trade for Mackey Samuskevitch, just because we felt that was
- 30:27Speaker 12: a draft capitol trade that we could certainly improve our
- 30:29Speaker 12: team on from that bit. And hey, we'll continue to
- 30:32Speaker 12: look at those things as we move forward here next
- 30:33Speaker 12: week or two.
- 30:34Speaker 2: There's the raid still there where you know, some of
- 30:36Speaker 2: these toss could easily continue, you know, not just into
- 30:39Speaker 2: this next week, but also into July as well.
- 30:41Speaker 12: I think it's one percent for sure, right there's never
- 30:43Speaker 12: you're never sure about the time flame on all these
- 30:46Speaker 12: different trades. Sometimes it takes five minutes and gets done.
- 30:49Speaker 12: Sometimes it's a progression over months. We had some discussions
- 30:53Speaker 12: about samas Kevitch at the trade deadline and then it,
- 30:55Speaker 12: you know, im materialized obviously last week. I think with
- 30:59Speaker 12: the lack of free out there, you know, sometimes it
- 31:01Speaker 12: gets to the big trade time is right around the draft.
- 31:04Speaker 12: I think that's going to actually progress throughout most of
- 31:06Speaker 12: the summer.
- 31:07Speaker 5: Jason, you talked about the guys coming up. We've seen
- 31:10Speaker 5: Oscar Fisker, Mulgar, Jacob Malonson, Ryan Winterton, you just re
- 31:13Speaker 5: signed Logan Morrison, who haven't we seen yet that you
- 31:17Speaker 5: are excited to potentially get here full time in Seattle.
- 31:21Speaker 12: Well, I think you touch base a little bit on
- 31:23Speaker 12: Oscar Molguard. I think Oscar, you know what was so
- 31:26Speaker 12: good was he got a taste of the National.
- 31:28Speaker 11: Hockey League last year.
- 31:30Speaker 12: You look back in his entire year, comes over in
- 31:32Speaker 12: North America, gets a sort of involved with the American
- 31:35Speaker 12: Hockey League, goes to the Olympics, plays National Hockey League games,
- 31:38Speaker 12: and then in the HL playoffs. He was probably one
- 31:41Speaker 12: of the best players in American Hockey League through two
- 31:43Speaker 12: rounds and stuff this year. So not only playing that
- 31:45Speaker 12: good two way game that he can certainly do, he
- 31:47Speaker 12: started being more of an offensive force out there. That
- 31:49Speaker 12: got us really excited. You know, I think to just
- 31:52Speaker 12: looking at our team. You saw at the end of
- 31:54Speaker 12: the season there bringing up players like Cocoa. Obviously Victor
- 31:57Speaker 12: Ausmin did a nice job. Yanni got some more games.
- 32:00Speaker 12: They're the one that we weren't able to get up
- 32:01Speaker 12: was Furcus, Right, he was injured a little bit at
- 32:04Speaker 12: the end of the year.
- 32:05Speaker 11: I think he took a really big step.
- 32:06Speaker 12: You look at that line of Morrison, Fercus and Yanni
- 32:09Speaker 12: throughout the entire playoffs, they were the sort of our
- 32:13Speaker 12: go to line down there and stuff, And I think
- 32:15Speaker 12: that's what got us really excited about the playoff un
- 32:17Speaker 12: in Coachilla Valley is that in every key spot, whether
- 32:20Speaker 12: it's our top players and forward, our top defenseman are number,
- 32:24Speaker 12: our starting goalie, all young players. And that's the big
- 32:26Speaker 12: difference from where Coachella Valley had their first two playoff runs.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Jason, before we let you go, how fired up are
- 32:31Speaker 2: you to see where Matkie Samoskevich fits into this?
- 32:34Speaker 12: Well, we think he's a player that has some same
- 32:37Speaker 12: sort of attributes as Bobby McMahon, great speed and a
- 32:41Speaker 12: great shot, sort of a shot first mentality. Obviously having
- 32:45Speaker 12: a he has a relationship with with Matty Benier's from
- 32:47Speaker 12: the Michigan days there, so I think it just allows
- 32:49Speaker 12: him to make that interaction to our group that much
- 32:51Speaker 12: easier and stuff from that perspective. But look, he's won
- 32:54Speaker 12: a Stanley Cup, He's been a part of a great
- 32:56Speaker 12: organization in Florida. We've talked about it before, trying to
- 32:59Speaker 12: bring people into our organization that have won at different organizations,
- 33:02Speaker 12: whether that's Brendan montro Chanler, Stevenson, Vince Dunn. Bringing someone
- 33:07Speaker 12: like Mackie in here aged twenty three, to me, there's
- 33:10Speaker 12: so much more potential in him and so very excited.
- 33:13Speaker 12: We look at re signing Bobby, bringing in Mackie. Our
- 33:16Speaker 12: team's got faster, our team's got more of a shot mentality.
- 33:19Speaker 12: We've talked a lot about getting creating more offense by
- 33:21Speaker 12: get pucks the net.
- 33:22Speaker 11: That's what these two players do.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Products of a very busy week, it continues the cracking
- 33:27Speaker 2: getting Chase reed Jason, thank you very much. Congratulations by
- 33:30Speaker 2: the way on his Prase seventh overall pick, and for
- 33:32Speaker 2: joining us as well, Thank you as well.
- 33:34Speaker 11: Thank you very much.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Havev good evening, Jays, Jason Bottererold cracking GM joining us.
- 33:37Speaker 2: We're back in a bit with more right here from
- 33:39Speaker 2: thirty two Bar and Grill on ninety three to three KJRFM.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Now back to the NHL Draft Show with your host
- 33:54Speaker 1: Mike Benton, live from thirty two Bar and Grill, presented
- 33:57Speaker 1: by your home for the Krack in Sports Radio ninety
- 34:00Speaker 1: three point three kJ r FM.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Well, this has been a pretty fun first day, hasn't
- 34:06Speaker 2: it for the NHL Draft. Back at thirty two Bar
- 34:08Speaker 2: and Grill, Mike Ian Everett al as well big.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Things once again.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Jason Bodil Robert Crown also sneaking out from the draft
- 34:16Speaker 2: room to join us here for a few minutes because
- 34:19Speaker 2: potentially a big day begins right here on the crack
- 34:22Speaker 2: and back end with Chase Reed, picked at seventh overall draft,
- 34:26Speaker 2: by the way, is still going into pick number twenty
- 34:29Speaker 2: B of the piers that.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Week twenty Yes, I have no doubt.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Yeah, looks like right now maybe we can look forward
- 34:35Speaker 2: to day two as far as more to add here
- 34:37Speaker 2: to the pipeline. But I'll just kind of jump into
- 34:39Speaker 2: our our final thoughts of this with a quick check
- 34:42Speaker 2: of the Ta Komanash text line four nine four five
- 34:44Speaker 2: one two oh six said, the vast majority of teams
- 34:47Speaker 2: in the NHL are income tax days. The difference is
- 34:49Speaker 2: winning tax is just an excuse.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Okay, I don't know what you want to say.
- 34:56Speaker 4: You know what, I disagree, But let's listen.
- 34:58Speaker 5: I've stated that that I think winning above all matters. Yes,
- 35:05Speaker 5: were you as an athlete are making bukoo dollars. But
- 35:08Speaker 5: and I've said this before as someone who can only
- 35:11Speaker 5: dream of being in a position to make fifteen million
- 35:15Speaker 5: dollars a year. I find it hard to believe that
- 35:18Speaker 5: I'm not gonna sign somewhere where my Washington take home
- 35:22Speaker 5: is only thirteen and a half Like, again, this is
- 35:25Speaker 5: this is a poor man ever talking here. Thirteen and
- 35:28Speaker 5: a half million after a ten percent millionaire. Stax is
- 35:33Speaker 5: still generational wealth. And I'm sorry, I'm not buying it.
- 35:37Speaker 5: It helps, it plays a factor, but everyone's saying that
- 35:41Speaker 5: the only reason why they want to go to Florida.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Tampa, Vegas and Dallas.
- 35:47Speaker 5: I'm not buying it, and I think it's blown so
- 35:50Speaker 5: much out of proportion. Those teams win those but also
- 35:54Speaker 5: too like they've been bad before, right Dallas until this
- 35:59Speaker 5: most recent on the last five six years they were on,
- 36:02Speaker 5: they didn't even sniff the playoffs.
- 36:04Speaker 10: That's what That's why the players have to update their
- 36:06Speaker 10: clauses every year.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Yeah, because the teams change.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Three six oh saying the prediction here for Chase Reed
- 36:12Speaker 2: full rookie season won't be until twenty eight twenty nine,
- 36:14Speaker 2: but by twenty nine thirty he'll be a top pair
- 36:16Speaker 2: of defenseman here for the Kraken and maybe at least
- 36:19Speaker 2: here for the next ten years.
- 36:21Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, listen, I'm looking forward to seeing this
- 36:23Speaker 10: kid next week.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Yeah, like.
- 36:26Speaker 10: If you're interested in seeing development camp, but this could be,
- 36:29Speaker 10: you know, one for the ages, because not just Chase Reid,
- 36:32Speaker 10: but obviously you're gonna see Jake O'Brien and you're gonna
- 36:34Speaker 10: see Berkeley Catton.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Know that you're gonna see a lot of.
- 36:37Speaker 10: Youth and at a very plane, at a very high
- 36:41Speaker 10: speed because a lot of these guys they can boogie well.
- 36:43Speaker 5: And also to you saying that you know, we're hoping
- 36:46Speaker 5: to see this, you know, and I love that that
- 36:47Speaker 5: take from from that call from that Texter, but it's
- 36:50Speaker 5: also he has to be there, right, Like part of
- 36:52Speaker 5: this audit was player development and looking at how these
- 36:56Speaker 5: guys are developing.
- 36:57Speaker 3: So now you're at a point where you.
- 36:59Speaker 5: Know, what, if you have a high top eight, top
- 37:03Speaker 5: ten draft pick, they need to be here in the
- 37:05Speaker 5: next two to three years. And I think some of
- 37:07Speaker 5: the players that you have taken in the first round,
- 37:10Speaker 5: second round the last couple of years, you need to
- 37:12Speaker 5: start seeing what you have with those guys as well.
- 37:16Speaker 11: On it.
- 37:21Speaker 6: I don't just gave me chills, listen. I think one
- 37:25Speaker 6: of the things that two things jump out about like
- 37:28Speaker 6: I like the last five days and we'll just work
- 37:31Speaker 6: backwards today as we've all been talking to different people
- 37:35Speaker 6: here in commercial breaks and the hockey ops folks and
- 37:38Speaker 6: some of the behind the scenes. This was a massive win. Yeah,
- 37:42Speaker 6: there is, and and Bot said it. I love he
- 37:46Speaker 6: gets it, he understands it. Yeah, I'm not gonna give
- 37:49Speaker 6: you the cliche about hey, you know, we're surprised that
- 37:52Speaker 6: guy was there. And that's true. You hear every GM
- 37:55Speaker 6: and every draft say that this was the real thing.
- 37:57Speaker 6: They were shocked he was there. Everyone's shocked he was there.
- 38:01Speaker 6: It was very real. They did not.
- 38:03Speaker 5: Expect him before. They didn't expect Jason to go to seven.
- 38:06Speaker 6: And the fact that this guy played World Juniors and
- 38:08Speaker 6: was Robert Cronson the best defenseman on Team USA at
- 38:11Speaker 6: World Juniors at sixteen, at seventh, sixteen, seventeen is amazing.
- 38:15Speaker 6: So that's a win for Seattle. I'm with al Jacobrian watching.
- 38:20Speaker 6: I want to see what he looks like in development
- 38:22Speaker 6: camp next week as well. See what Jacobrian looks like.
- 38:24Speaker 6: I think I think development camp next year, this next
- 38:26Speaker 6: week's gonna be a ton of fun. Blake Fiddler, what
- 38:28Speaker 6: does he look like last years second round pick, the
- 38:30Speaker 6: big defenseman and going on on.
- 38:32Speaker 3: But this was a win.
- 38:33Speaker 6: Going back to Sunday, the Jason Roberts and stuff aside,
- 38:37Speaker 6: and we're seeing across the league right now palm trees,
- 38:41Speaker 6: sunshine and a chance to win the Stanley Cup today.
- 38:45Speaker 6: That's where Columbus is going through that all those things
- 38:48Speaker 6: are happening. Let's go back to Sunday. They added a
- 38:51Speaker 6: player for the twenty seventh pick that is going to
- 38:54Speaker 6: help them and make them better right now today, right,
- 38:57Speaker 6: I think we all agree upon that, right, like they
- 38:58Speaker 6: are better. I think they kept one too and backman, Yeah,
- 39:02Speaker 6: so I would say you could say they're slightly better
- 39:05Speaker 6: than they were to end last season.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Would you agree, yes? With what they've added.
- 39:08Speaker 6: Yes, And there's still a long way to go, and
- 39:10Speaker 6: if we're being honest, we know what they're gonna do.
- 39:12Speaker 6: There's probably gonna be some deletions with the roster, and
- 39:14Speaker 6: you know number seventeen and twenty four probably not gonna
- 39:17Speaker 6: be here, but there's some guys ready to step up
- 39:19Speaker 6: and take those positions. So I think it all in all,
- 39:22Speaker 6: the last five days have been a very good five
- 39:25Speaker 6: days for the Seattle.
- 39:27Speaker 4: Craft up against the clock here.
- 39:28Speaker 5: Ever, in Albi, I was gonna say, I go back
- 39:30Speaker 5: to what we said earlier today. You know, a guy
- 39:32Speaker 5: like McMahon wants to be here. Those are the guys
- 39:35Speaker 5: you want to build around. And you talked about guys
- 39:37Speaker 5: wanting to go to Palm Trees and and go to
- 39:39Speaker 5: an Instant Cup contender. I'm a big Kevin Hart fan
- 39:42Speaker 5: and one of his biggest lines is everybody wants to
- 39:45Speaker 5: be famous, but nobody wants to put in the work.
- 39:47Speaker 5: And a guy like Bobby McMahon, he's shown he wants
- 39:50Speaker 5: to put in the work. He's committed here. I go
- 39:52Speaker 5: back to Brandon Montour put he wants to be here,
- 39:55Speaker 5: he signed here, he wants to be a part of
- 39:57Speaker 5: what's going. Those are the type of players you got
- 40:00Speaker 5: to build around. Internally, You're Chase Reed, Jacobrien.
- 40:03Speaker 6: That should be the focus. That should be the focus,
- 40:05Speaker 6: Like who wants to be here? Yeah, you mentioned a
- 40:07Speaker 6: ton of time again. I don't want guys that aren't
- 40:08Speaker 6: here yep.
- 40:09Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 3: Next week.
- 40:10Speaker 10: Final thought for me is, I'm looking for this development camp.
- 40:12Speaker 10: I want to see these players. Obviously, I want to
- 40:15Speaker 10: see Chase Reid. I wanna I want to. I want
- 40:16Speaker 10: to see Jacobrian Fidler. I also want to see who
- 40:19Speaker 10: else shows up next week to develop camp that might
- 40:21Speaker 10: not be on the on the younger side.
- 40:23Speaker 4: We're looking forward to it. That's all the time we
- 40:25Speaker 4: have been.
- 40:26Speaker 2: That's a professional Teamber Crown, Jason, Gregor, Gee Flaming, John Foresland,
- 40:32Speaker 2: Jacobrien Thanks folks for hanging out forever at al ian
- 40:35Speaker 2: I might see you
