- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, it's Alex Garrett One Leg Up Alex and we
- 0:07Speaker 1: are in twenty twenty six, which means One Lug Up
- 0:09Speaker 1: Alex in twenty twenty six. Tune in. We've just published
- 0:13Speaker 1: over fifteen hundred episodes in twelve years, with more TOICOM
- 0:17Speaker 1: thanks to you out there listening One Leg Up Alex
- 0:20Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six. Oh yeah, we are now kicking
- 0:24Speaker 1: off year thirteen on the main vein of the podcast
- 0:29Speaker 1: One Leg Up with Alex Garrett. But it used to
- 0:31Speaker 1: be the Sports Hour back in twenty fourteen and thirteen
- 0:35Speaker 1: years later, after many many evolutions and horizons broadened and
- 0:40Speaker 1: tax dollars accounted for, here we are and speaking of
- 0:46Speaker 1: tax dollars accounted for, this is the One Leg Up
- 0:48Speaker 1: Alex Update. Now this is gonna be a little different.
- 0:52Speaker 1: The One Leg Up Alex Update will be like a
- 0:54Speaker 1: two or three minute rant or talk about something that, yeah,
- 0:58Speaker 1: I don't want to get two in depth of, but
- 1:00Speaker 1: I feel like you should know. And this update today
- 1:03Speaker 1: is about what's happening in Washington as House Republicans moved
- 1:07Speaker 1: toward reopening, yes, reopening the US government. Fully, if you
- 1:12Speaker 1: weren't aware, some of the government has been closed over
- 1:19Speaker 1: the weekend, including the part where the Senate removed funding
- 1:23Speaker 1: for the Department of Homeland Security and replace it with
- 1:28Speaker 1: two week stopgap funding. But but House of Representatives on
- 1:36Speaker 1: Tuesday clear to key procedural hurdle on a package of
- 1:40Speaker 1: bills to reopen most of the government, which shut down
- 1:43Speaker 1: Saturday morning. House Speaker Mike Johnson held the vote open
- 1:47Speaker 1: while trying to flip hardline Republicans voting against the rule.
- 1:51Speaker 1: The vote was very narrow today seventeen, two fifteen, and
- 1:57Speaker 1: cleared the way for the House to vote on the
- 1:59Speaker 1: package and Senator Trump's government Trump's desk to reopen in
- 2:04Speaker 1: the government, which has been shuttered since Saturday morning. It's
- 2:07Speaker 1: a mini shutdown, but it's been shut down since Saturday morning.
- 2:11Speaker 1: That vote expected later today. Johnson kept the House open
- 2:15Speaker 1: much longer than expected, according to CNBC, to clear the
- 2:21Speaker 1: procedural vote where he could only afford to lose one
- 2:24Speaker 1: Republican and so he got holdouts to flip. And the
- 2:40Speaker 1: whole difference here is about dealing with whether the DHS,
- 2:48Speaker 1: led by Christinomes should still be funded and to me,
- 2:55Speaker 1: if she's still leading it, no matter what I think
- 2:57Speaker 1: they should still fund it. But beyond that, again, holding
- 3:02Speaker 1: Americans of all kinds hostage over politics, That's what this
- 3:08Speaker 1: is about. And that's why we have to make sure
- 3:14Speaker 1: as advocates, as people disabilities, and as Americans, we have
- 3:19Speaker 1: to be in these people's ears about said politics and
- 3:26Speaker 1: about being held hostage. That's why I encourage you, if
- 3:30Speaker 1: you are a person, especially with a digestive disease, but
- 3:36Speaker 1: really who cares about healthcare in America, to register for
- 3:39Speaker 1: the twenty twenty six d DNC Spring Pugbook Policy Forum.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Remember I went in to see last year. My mom
- 3:46Speaker 1: was there. We advocated to keep key provisions in place,
- 3:53Speaker 1: specifically for those who need medical supplies like myself, are
- 3:57Speaker 1: not shortchanged by having a different set of medical supplies
- 4:05Speaker 1: that's dictated by the healthcare Like, oh, if we can't
- 4:07Speaker 1: cover this, hey you can get that because we'll cover that.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Like no, that shouldn't be it. You should be able
- 4:12Speaker 1: to get coverage for the supplies you're most comfortable for,
- 4:15Speaker 1: for the doctors you're most comfortable with. And I'll always
- 4:19Speaker 1: say that, but now you have a chance to say
- 4:20Speaker 1: it to different Senate and House off off you know,
- 4:30Speaker 1: Senate offices and House offices. Last year we saw on
- 4:34Speaker 1: the House side Van Drew, Grace Mang. We then on
- 4:37Speaker 1: the Senate side saw Booker and Schumer's office. So it's
- 4:42Speaker 1: a good way to make our voice heard. Someone call
- 4:45Speaker 1: it lobbying. I call it advocacy. But now it's almost
- 4:49Speaker 1: here again March first and March second. On the heels
- 4:52Speaker 1: of all this shutdown talk is the thirty sixth annual
- 4:55Speaker 1: d d n C Spring Public Policy Forum. Attendees, we
- 5:00Speaker 1: must register by February ninth. That's this Sunday, that's this Monday.
- 5:08Speaker 1: A hotel reservation is using the code DNC should be
- 5:13Speaker 1: made by February eighth. Stipend requests must be made by
- 5:16Speaker 1: the organization by corresponding deadlines. I was fortunate to have
- 5:20Speaker 1: the stipend last year on behalf of the United Austome Association,
- 5:25Speaker 1: which celebrated twenty years, by the way, and now now
- 5:30Speaker 1: I'm encouraging others to apply and advocate. It's a very
- 5:36Speaker 1: informative weekend and also a fun weekend in DC. A
- 5:39Speaker 1: low cult, but a fun weekend none. The last March first,
- 5:42Speaker 1: March second, d DNC Spring Policy Form is back, and
- 5:46Speaker 1: if you sign up today, you'll be locked in. All
- 5:50Speaker 1: attendees must register by Monday, February ninth. The d and
- 6:02Speaker 1: C is also looking for patient speakers, So do you
- 6:04Speaker 1: have a patient advocate who would like to share their
- 6:06Speaker 1: personal story. They're on the lookout for patient speakers for
- 6:09Speaker 1: the panel. Reach out to Josh. That's Josh Fine, ad
- 6:13Speaker 1: Fine at h MCW dot org. That's Fine at h
- 6:21Speaker 1: MCW dot org for more information. Many things for all
- 6:25Speaker 1: d dn c's members and supporters to make to work
- 6:28Speaker 1: to make this year's forum a success. And so it
- 6:36Speaker 1: was a very beautiful process to watch our government work
- 6:41Speaker 1: for us as we work to keep the government open,
- 6:45Speaker 1: as we work to share our story like we did
- 6:50Speaker 1: last spring, and the DNC does at Fall one too.
- 6:53Speaker 1: But the spring was just a very informative experience, and
- 6:57Speaker 1: I recommend those who do have a disability and want
- 7:00Speaker 1: to advocate to step up and sign up because how
- 7:06Speaker 1: many times could we keep hearing about shutdown talking DC?
- 7:10Speaker 1: How many times before it gets sickening? So that's the one.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Like a BLEX update, shutdowns should be averted by later
- 7:20Speaker 1: today and the DNC Policy Forum on the adapting side
- 7:25Speaker 1: is ready to go in five weeks from now, so
- 7:29Speaker 1: reserve your spot today with the d D and c
- 7:32Speaker 1: Alhandra Treano and uh Toledo and Josh Fine are your
- 7:40Speaker 1: point people for that. And we can only pray that
- 7:47Speaker 1: this shutdown gets averted, that people disabilities are protected. We
- 7:50Speaker 1: saw how bad it was during that longest shutdown I
- 7:53Speaker 1: think forty three days. We don't want that again. And
- 7:57Speaker 1: to be in our in the ears of our political
- 8:01Speaker 1: leaders makes a difference. I mean, I remember last year
- 8:06Speaker 1: we were in Schumer's office a week or two before
- 8:08Speaker 1: he had a vote for the to avoid a shutdown
- 8:10Speaker 1: then and despite pushback, he voted to avert a shutdown,
- 8:15Speaker 1: agreeing with Republicans. Last fall, despite pushback, you had Republicans
- 8:23Speaker 1: agree with Democrats and they were threatened with their jobs.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? By parsons still works. By Parsonship
- 8:32Speaker 1: needs to work to make our government function so they
- 8:34Speaker 1: can help fund those in need. And that's why this
- 8:38Speaker 1: forum is so important and why I'm encouraging you to
- 8:41Speaker 1: sign up for the DNC Public Policy Forum because how
- 8:47Speaker 1: many times can we deal with a shutdown talk and
- 8:50Speaker 1: it not wear on us? Right? That's different. Now that's
- 8:53Speaker 1: my onely got ballox update a bit later I'll drop
- 8:56Speaker 1: my interview with Caleb and y see Money Underscore three,
- 9:00Speaker 1: n Y Underscore, NYC Underscore Money three or one about
- 9:03Speaker 1: his time a pin Stripe Pride, and then we'll see
- 9:06Speaker 1: what else this week goes. I still have to do
- 9:08Speaker 1: one leg up on the Big Game feature, but we'll
- 9:10Speaker 1: get to that. This is the one like a Balox update,
- 9:13Speaker 1: shutdown nearly averted. Prayers for Savannah Guthrie as they try
- 9:17Speaker 1: and find her mom, Nancy Guthrie, and also prayers that
- 9:27Speaker 1: the shutdown gets averted so those are disabilities and those
- 9:31Speaker 1: who need the healthcare are provided for, because we don't
- 9:37Speaker 1: want to go through another extended shutdown, do we. That's
- 9:39Speaker 1: not having one look up for Americans, is it,
