- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi, get everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth podcast, The Pick yourself up, dust yourself off,
- 0:13Speaker 1: and start all over again. Addition, going all the way
- 0:18Speaker 1: back to Nat King Cole for that intro, and it
- 0:21Speaker 1: feels like you have to go back that far to
- 0:23Speaker 1: remember a Bengals win. As Cincinnati fell to Owen seven
- 0:27Speaker 1: on Sunday. With a twenty seven seventeen loss to Jacksonville
- 0:32Speaker 1: coming up, you'll hear radio replays, locker room comments, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: Dave Lapham will join me for postgame analysis plus and
- 0:40Speaker 1: this week's fun facts conversation. We'll meet the person under
- 0:43Speaker 1: the pads as I'll talk to William Wilson Webb better
- 0:48Speaker 1: known as b W Webb, a Bengals newcomer this year
- 0:52Speaker 1: who is out there playing every week with a broken
- 0:55Speaker 1: bone in his right arm. All of that is straight ahead,
- 0:58Speaker 1: but first, here's a quick reminder that you can have
- 1:01Speaker 1: the latest edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 1:05Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify,

- 1:17Speaker 1: On Wednesday nights, when Dave Lapham and I take the
- 1:19Speaker 1: Bengals game Plan show on the road. We see many
- 1:23Speaker 1: loyal Bengals fans who have become our friends, and more
- 1:26Speaker 1: often than not, they include a lovely woman named Nita.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And when Nita's at the show, she brings each of
- 1:34Speaker 1: us a big pan of her homemade brownies. I am
- 1:38Speaker 1: here to tell you they are the best brownies I
- 1:41Speaker 1: have ever had in my life. They're moist, they're delicious,
- 1:46Speaker 1: they're fattening, and it's worth it. So thank you Nita
- 1:51Speaker 1: for making life in the Horde household a little sweeter. Now,
- 1:55Speaker 1: let's get to football. The first quarter of Sunday's game
- 1:59Speaker 1: against jackson could have been a disaster. The Jags out
- 2:03Speaker 1: gained the Bengals one ten to eleven. Cincinnati's four running
- 2:08Speaker 1: plays went for minus six yards, but thanks to a
- 2:12Speaker 1: great goal line stand, Jacksonville didn't score. Now they're going
- 2:17Speaker 1: to give it to Fournette. He leaps and he did
- 2:20Speaker 1: not get in. No Bengals with a goal stop Preston
- 2:24Speaker 1: Brown bub meeting Leonard Fournette in mid air and perfecting
- 2:28Speaker 1: the Jaguars from scoring. It starts with the defensive line.
- 2:31Speaker 1: You have to get penetration and push re established the
- 2:34Speaker 1: line of scrimmage backwards. They do that and allows Preston
- 2:37Speaker 1: Brown to get airborne and meet him before the goal line.
- 2:40Speaker 1: He jumped Mike Tournette did a couple of Brahma bulls
- 2:43Speaker 1: hitting above the line of scrimmage. That's basically how the
- 2:46Speaker 1: first half went for the Bengals defense. They allowed a
- 2:49Speaker 1: whopping three hundred nine yards in the half, but Jacksonville
- 2:52Speaker 1: drove into the red zone three times and came away
- 2:55Speaker 1: with just six points. Here's Jesse Bates, I thought we
- 2:59Speaker 1: did a really good at field goals. You know, it
- 3:02Speaker 1: looks kind of bad on papers. We give up a
- 3:04Speaker 1: lot of yards and stuff like that, but um, I
- 3:06Speaker 1: think we did a really good job of field goals, um,
- 3:10Speaker 1: you know, and just continue to fight. The Bengals, on
- 3:12Speaker 1: the other hand, struggled to move the ball in the
- 3:15Speaker 1: first half, hunting on their first five possessions, but with
- 3:19Speaker 1: two fourteen left in the half, they finally got something going.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Dalton back to throw against the four man rush. The
- 3:26Speaker 1: protection is good. Fires a fastball over the by ericson
- 3:30Speaker 1: you get into Jack's territory at the forty near sideline.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Thirty pushed out of bounds at the twenty. A big
- 3:36Speaker 1: play at last, Jared Wilson shoves Alex Rikson out of
- 3:41Speaker 1: bounds right at the twenty yard line forty eight yards
- 3:45Speaker 1: on the play. Andy Dalton's first six pass completions all
- 3:48Speaker 1: went to Alex Erickson for one hundred ten yards, and
- 3:53Speaker 1: he's only other pass completion of the first half gave
- 3:56Speaker 1: Cincinnati the lead. Dalton throws a pass it is caught
- 4:01Speaker 1: touchdown Joe Mixon. If you can't run it in, throw
- 4:06Speaker 1: it to all right, and he catches a two yard
- 4:09Speaker 1: touchdown pass to give Cincinnati the lead. The Bengals had
- 4:13Speaker 1: a seven six halftime lead and got the ball to
- 4:15Speaker 1: begin the third quarter. To put it mildly, they did
- 4:19Speaker 1: not capitalize. First, Alex Rikson dropped a perfectly thrown deep
- 4:24Speaker 1: ball that would have gained at least thirty yards. Then,
- 4:28Speaker 1: after a long pass was completed to Audumn Tate, the
- 4:31Speaker 1: Bengals had a free play when Jacksonville jumped off sides
- 4:35Speaker 1: and Dalton tried to pull an Aaron Rodgers by throwing deep.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Not only was his pass incomplete, but the Bengals didn't
- 4:42Speaker 1: even get the five yard penalty because a chop block
- 4:46Speaker 1: by Joe Mixon superseded it for a loss of fifteen.
- 4:51Speaker 1: What else could go wrong? The Bengals found out on
- 4:55Speaker 1: the very next play, tightly clustered formation, quick throw out
- 4:59Speaker 1: to Tyler boy boy breaking a tackle right, he did
- 5:01Speaker 1: a fifty still on his feet to the Jacksonville forty
- 5:04Speaker 1: five ball. The ball comes out Jacksonville recover at the
- 5:09Speaker 1: forty four yard line. Tyler Boyd also dropped at least
- 5:12Speaker 1: two passes, and his fumble led to a field goal
- 5:15Speaker 1: that gave the Jags and nine to seven lead. Here's
- 5:18Speaker 1: Alex ericson on the Bengals offensive ineptitude. That's been our problem.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Can't make the plays, you know, looking at myself right there. Um,
- 5:26Speaker 1: gotta make that play. Gotta you know, get his jump
- 5:29Speaker 1: start in the second half, and UM, you know it's
- 5:32Speaker 1: just it's been sort of over season, not building making
- 5:34Speaker 1: enough plays, and um, today it was no different. Um
- 5:37Speaker 1: just pointing out myself on that one. You know, I
- 5:38Speaker 1: gotta make that play. And I know a lot of
- 5:40Speaker 1: other guys are saying the same thing about other players
- 5:42Speaker 1: out the game, and UM, you know, when it's you're
- 5:45Speaker 1: in the battle of you know, trying to get a win. Um,
- 5:48Speaker 1: every plays every play matters, um and we're not good
- 5:52Speaker 1: enough to overcome, you know, the bad plays right now,
- 5:55Speaker 1: So we gotta be able to really locked in and
- 5:57Speaker 1: just make every play. It was ten nine Cincinnati going
- 6:00Speaker 1: to the fourth the third time this year the Bengals
- 6:02Speaker 1: have had a lead in the fourth quarter, but as
- 6:05Speaker 1: was the case against Seattle and Buffalo, they could not
- 6:09Speaker 1: hold on to it. Mins she was ready, catches the ball,
- 6:12Speaker 1: drops to throw Lobs went toward the back right corner
- 6:14Speaker 1: of the end zone. It is caught and it's a touchdown.
- 6:18Speaker 1: A two point conversion made its seventeen ten Jacksonville, but
- 6:21Speaker 1: the Bengals immediately answered by driving into the red zone.
- 6:26Speaker 1: The Bengals habit first and ten at the fifteen yard line,
- 6:28Speaker 1: Bernard and Mixon both in the game. Dalton is back
- 6:32Speaker 1: to throw Cocks the arms intercepted by Miles Jack. Linebacker
- 6:37Speaker 1: Miles Jack cutting in front of Tyler Boyd to pick
- 6:40Speaker 1: off a pass that was slightly underthrown. It was only
- 6:44Speaker 1: the tenth red zone interception in Dalton's nine NFL seasons,
- 6:49Speaker 1: and it was a killer. The offense got the ball
- 6:53Speaker 1: back with about five minutes left, and things went from
- 6:55Speaker 1: bad to brutal Dalton sets up a screen. Is it
- 6:59Speaker 1: right to Jacksonville? It's a pick six for Yannique in Goackway. Well,
- 7:05Speaker 1: I'll tell you who the key guy was on that one,
- 7:08Speaker 1: Brian Travan. Brian had the quick pressure and as a
- 7:12Speaker 1: result of the quick pressure, Andy Dalton throws it where
- 7:14Speaker 1: he thinks he's going to have a receiver and instead
- 7:18Speaker 1: of a receiver it turns out to be in Gotway.
- 7:22Speaker 1: The defensive ends twenty three yard pick six made it
- 7:26Speaker 1: twenty four to ten. And when it rains it pours.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Andy Dalton is ready for the shotgun, Snap catches the ball,
- 7:32Speaker 1: he is back to throw, flames it off of the middle.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It is intercept and can running it back to the
- 7:38Speaker 1: fifty down to the Bengals forty and the Bengals will
- 7:41Speaker 1: bring down Ronnie Harrison after Jacksonville's third interception in the
- 7:47Speaker 1: fourth quarter, Wow, that led to a field goal and
- 7:51Speaker 1: made it twenty seven ten and the game was out
- 7:53Speaker 1: of reach. The Bengals made the final score a bit
- 7:56Speaker 1: more respectable with less than a minute to go, third
- 8:00Speaker 1: and goal from the one. It is a quarterback sneak.
- 8:02Speaker 1: They pushed Dalton from behind and he goes into the
- 8:05Speaker 1: end zone for his third rushing touchdown of the year.
- 8:09Speaker 1: The only Bengal who has scored a touchdown on the
- 8:13Speaker 1: ground in twenty nineteen. Crazy Joe Mixon leads the AFC
- 8:20Speaker 1: and rushing last season. Joe Mixon far from a threat
- 8:25Speaker 1: to do that this year and doesn't have a rushing
- 8:27Speaker 1: touchdown in seven football games. Speaking of Mixon, he carried
- 8:32Speaker 1: ten times for two yards. Giovanni Bernard had four carries
- 8:37Speaker 1: for zero two. Jets sweeps for Alex Erickson went from
- 8:41Speaker 1: minus two that sixteen running plays for a total of
- 8:46Speaker 1: zero yards. Here's offensive lineman Alex Redman on the sad
- 8:51Speaker 1: state of the Bengals running game. I mean, every football
- 8:54Speaker 1: team has got to assert some kind of run game,
- 8:57Speaker 1: unless obviously you're one of the aired out kind of teams.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean that's crucial for us just to
- 9:03Speaker 1: find that rhythm and flow. Unfortunately we haven't been able
- 9:06Speaker 1: to find it. No, they have not. The Bengals are
- 9:10Speaker 1: on a pace to rush for eight hundred fifty yards
- 9:13Speaker 1: this season. The lowest rushing total for a season in
- 9:17Speaker 1: team history was nine hundred forty nine yards, set back
- 9:20Speaker 1: in nineteen eighty two. So that was ninety nine more
- 9:24Speaker 1: yards than the bengals current pace. Are you ready for this?
- 9:29Speaker 1: Nineteen eighty two was a strike season and the Bengals
- 9:33Speaker 1: only played nine games. The final score Sunday was twenty
- 9:38Speaker 1: seven seventeen as the Bengals fell to O and seven.
- 9:41Speaker 1: In case you're wondering, the worst start in team history
- 9:44Speaker 1: is and ten in nineteen ninety three. The bengals next
- 9:48Speaker 1: three games are against the Rams in London, the Ravens
- 9:51Speaker 1: at home, and the Raiders in Oakland. Barring something unforeseen,
- 9:56Speaker 1: Cincinnati will be an underdog in all three games. After
- 10:00Speaker 1: Sunday's loss, Lap spent three and a half minutes with
- 10:03Speaker 1: head coach Zach Taylor. Coach a tough one, particularly in
- 10:08Speaker 1: that in that fourth quarter when you have, you know,
- 10:11Speaker 1: three interceptions in like a five pass attempt sequence. I mean,
- 10:14Speaker 1: it's hard to hard to stay stay in a game
- 10:16Speaker 1: in the NFL. Really, sorry, you know, we knew it
- 10:18Speaker 1: was gonna be tough. Game is gonna be come down
- 10:19Speaker 1: a field position and turnovers, and unfortunately we had four.
- 10:23Speaker 1: They had none, and that's what it comes down to.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Fuel position. In the early stage of the game, Kevin
- 10:28Speaker 1: Hubert was pinning them. He was booming kicks. I mean,
- 10:31Speaker 1: you guys had a big, huge field position advantage even
- 10:34Speaker 1: though they were generating yards. I mean, defense is playing
- 10:36Speaker 1: good red zone defense enough putting points on the board,
- 10:39Speaker 1: you get your you know, first red zone opportunity to
- 10:40Speaker 1: throw seven on the board and take a lead. So,
- 10:43Speaker 1: you know, the field position part of it, you know,
- 10:45Speaker 1: was working pretty well. But again, you know, the turnovers
- 10:48Speaker 1: basically unfold everything. Yeah, I thought the defense, you know,
- 10:51Speaker 1: they gave a lot of yards on the first drive.
- 10:52Speaker 1: They had the great goal on stand. They've done a
- 10:54Speaker 1: good job in the little red zone, and then they
- 10:57Speaker 1: got some good backed up stands back there and then
- 11:00Speaker 1: having the pun team, we're doing a great job put
- 11:01Speaker 1: him down. We just didn't get anything going on offense
- 11:03Speaker 1: give ourselves a chance to get points on the board.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Particularly you know, the running game once again, I mean
- 11:08Speaker 1: I think Joe had two yards on ten carries. I
- 11:10Speaker 1: think the positive yards I mean Andy Dalton had. I
- 11:13Speaker 1: think he ended up with thirty Stomwad yards and they
- 11:15Speaker 1: were all Andy Dalton. I mean, the running backs were
- 11:17Speaker 1: negated by tackler for loss. Any positives they had on
- 11:20Speaker 1: attempts was negated by by negatives. So I mean when
- 11:23Speaker 1: you can't get the running game unlocked at all, I mean,
- 11:25Speaker 1: playing one hand behind your back like that is tough
- 11:27Speaker 1: in this league, and it's hard. We gotta win our
- 11:29Speaker 1: matchups up front. And there are plenty of times when
- 11:33Speaker 1: you could see there, there's a good run there, and
- 11:34Speaker 1: at the last second we're getting defeated on a block.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And so we got to step up and take ownership
- 11:39Speaker 1: and figure out a way to fix it, because that's frustrating.
- 11:42Speaker 1: That's a tough way to play when you can't run
- 11:44Speaker 1: the ball. So Alex Erickson steps up and makes some
- 11:47Speaker 1: plays for you. Eight catches one hundred and thirty seven
- 11:49Speaker 1: yards And talked to him earlier, and you know, he's
- 11:52Speaker 1: obviously the kind of guy he is. He's lamenting the
- 11:54Speaker 1: ones that he could have had. You know, he could
- 11:55Speaker 1: have had about a two hundred yard day if he
- 11:57Speaker 1: catches everything. And but that's I guess, you know, that's
- 12:00Speaker 1: that's kind of the story. You know. It's like when
- 12:03Speaker 1: you when you need to have plays made, they're not
- 12:05Speaker 1: always being made, are there? In these tight games, every
- 12:08Speaker 1: play matters, And so h felt like we maybe had
- 12:11Speaker 1: six or seven drops today that hurt us a couple
- 12:14Speaker 1: times up front. You know, maybe a guy went the
- 12:16Speaker 1: wrong way on some runs. That hurt us. And so
- 12:19Speaker 1: that's a tough way to play game. And a game
- 12:20Speaker 1: like this, when you know it's gonna be tough, it's
- 12:21Speaker 1: a tough to you're funny, gets a good defense, and
- 12:24Speaker 1: that hurt us. You played the position. When a quarterback
- 12:27Speaker 1: is trying to make a play in the fourth quarter
- 12:29Speaker 1: and maybe trying to do too much to make a
- 12:31Speaker 1: play in the fourth quarter, is that what you have
- 12:33Speaker 1: to fight. It's hard well to take a look at
- 12:35Speaker 1: you know, one of them is a screen pass the
- 12:37Speaker 1: backgut picked off and um, so it's a pick six.
- 12:40Speaker 1: You know, that's that's not what I put on the quarterback.
- 12:41Speaker 1: That's that's everybody up front. And then the other two
- 12:44Speaker 1: we got to look at those. Those are tough. You know.
- 12:46Speaker 1: It's we're in the red zone, um, about to score,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and defense made a play and it was a real
- 12:51Speaker 1: drive killer. So you're looking at everybody's defense up front
- 12:56Speaker 1: seems to be you know, a cut above. I mean,
- 12:59Speaker 1: they're every every card carrying giant seems to be playing
- 13:02Speaker 1: in the National Football League and their athletes to boot
- 13:05Speaker 1: you know on that side of the football. You know,
- 13:07Speaker 1: next time, next week's game in London against Aaron Donald,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you're all familiar with that. I mean that dude defensive
- 13:14Speaker 1: MVP twice as a defensive tackle. I mean, people are
- 13:17Speaker 1: putting four hands and four eyes on him and he's
- 13:19Speaker 1: still he's still killing people. That that guy's He's a
- 13:22Speaker 1: unique talent, a real challenge in her hands. He's one
- 13:24Speaker 1: of the best players I've ever been around. Um, I
- 13:27Speaker 1: think anyone who's ever coach on the same team he's
- 13:30Speaker 1: on played again, someone would say that. And so let's
- 13:32Speaker 1: figure out a way to be a ficial on offense.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Now time for some postgame analysis, and we start with
- 13:37Speaker 1: the bengals sputtering offense. Cincinnati is averaging sixteen points and
- 13:43Speaker 1: three hundred five yards a game, only fifty three of
- 13:46Speaker 1: those yards on the ground, and the problems begin up front.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Lap We know the offensive line isn't good. They've been
- 13:54Speaker 1: battered by injury. They got some guys out there that
- 13:57Speaker 1: have not done well in a Bengals for him since
- 14:00Speaker 1: they've been here. But is that it is that the
- 14:04Speaker 1: reason why the Bengals offense is struggling, or as the
- 14:08Speaker 1: play calling doesn't question the ball. Has Andy Dalton been
- 14:11Speaker 1: bad bad? What would you say? I would say all
- 14:14Speaker 1: of the above is true, but it starts with the
- 14:15Speaker 1: offensive line is the head of the snake. When the
- 14:18Speaker 1: offensive line is struggling, everybody else struggles. When the offensive
- 14:21Speaker 1: line plays well, everybody eats. Everybody plays well. When the
- 14:24Speaker 1: offensive line is playing well, your whole playbook's open to you.
- 14:27Speaker 1: As a play caller, you can call anything you want.
- 14:30Speaker 1: When it's not playing well for you. As a play caller,
- 14:33Speaker 1: you're limited, and you're struggling. As a quarterback, your clock
- 14:37Speaker 1: has changed. You're struggling even when you're not being pressured.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Do you think you are? You're seeing ghosts, you know,
- 14:42Speaker 1: in the pocket and all those kind of things. I mean,
- 14:45Speaker 1: it has such a huge ripple effect. Receivers running routes.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Who is the indy under pressure? Who I need to
- 14:51Speaker 1: I better try to you know, cut this rout off
- 14:53Speaker 1: maybe a little bit soon, a little bit quicker. It
- 14:55Speaker 1: just has a huge trickle down effect, and it leads
- 14:58Speaker 1: to what happened in the in the fourth quarter three
- 15:00Speaker 1: interceptions because you know, Jacksonville's just pinning their ears back
- 15:04Speaker 1: and teeing off. You know the Bengals defense was on
- 15:07Speaker 1: the field too long because the offense of ineptitude. And
- 15:10Speaker 1: again it all starts with not getting enough done up
- 15:13Speaker 1: front on a consistent basis, and it's got a huge
- 15:16Speaker 1: ripple effect throughout the whole team. The rushing numbers were
- 15:19Speaker 1: mind boggling in this game. It's been a problem all year,
- 15:23Speaker 1: but nothing like it was in this game. To sixteen
- 15:26Speaker 1: rushing yard for Jackson Bill, thirty three for Cincinnati, all
- 15:30Speaker 1: thirty three for Andy Dalton. The Bengals tried sixteen running
- 15:34Speaker 1: plays to either Joe Mixon, Giovanni Bernard and Alex Erickson
- 15:38Speaker 1: and did not gain a single yard. Incredible. I mean,
- 15:42Speaker 1: you can't make it up. It's almost impossible to comprehend.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And Andy Dalton had his third rushing touchdown. Joe Mixon,
- 15:49Speaker 1: Giovanni Bernard none. They don't have a rushing touchdown other
- 15:53Speaker 1: than the quarterback. So it's I don't care who you're
- 15:58Speaker 1: playing against defense in the National Football League, when you
- 16:02Speaker 1: have no running game, I don't mean just you're struggling
- 16:05Speaker 1: running it. I mean no running game zero other than
- 16:07Speaker 1: your quarterback running in the football that's one and a
- 16:10Speaker 1: half hands tied behind your back. You're in trouble. And
- 16:14Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter it finally, you know, the dam
- 16:16Speaker 1: broke and Andy threw the interceptions. You know, the one
- 16:19Speaker 1: screen pass, he's under pressure. They don't even slowing up
- 16:21Speaker 1: guys on the screen pass, and the back gets picked
- 16:24Speaker 1: out of the backfield, runs into a defensive lineman and
- 16:27Speaker 1: he's just trying to get rid of the ball to
- 16:28Speaker 1: the screen area. There's no screen receiver and it's a
- 16:31Speaker 1: pick six. So you know, that's the drive that kind
- 16:37Speaker 1: of is a nutshell of the season. And me, it
- 16:40Speaker 1: was the first drive at the third quarter, Alex Derickson
- 16:43Speaker 1: drops the ball that was for big yards, comes right
- 16:46Speaker 1: back to Audum Tate completes the ball down the football field.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Defense Jaguars jump offside. They call him a legal chop
- 16:53Speaker 1: block on Joe Mixon. So Andy thinks he's got a
- 16:56Speaker 1: free play. It doesn't take advantage of the free play
- 16:58Speaker 1: down the field. But instead of the five yard penalty
- 17:02Speaker 1: first and five, they were kind of lized fifteen yards
- 17:04Speaker 1: and it's first and twenty five and then the fumble,
- 17:09Speaker 1: So yeah, should have had that completion. I'm still going forward.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I'm going to get one penalty sets me back behind
- 17:17Speaker 1: the chains like I've been almost all year long, and
- 17:20Speaker 1: then a fumble, So that to me encapsulates the offensive
- 17:25Speaker 1: struggles all year long, setting themselves back behind the chains,
- 17:29Speaker 1: you know, turning the football over. Whatever it may be,
- 17:32Speaker 1: it's just not good enough. You mentioned that fumble early
- 17:35Speaker 1: in the third quarter. It was committed by Tyler Boyd,
- 17:37Speaker 1: who had a rough game couple of drops plus the fumble.
- 17:41Speaker 1: He's obviously been the Bengals best offensive player to this
- 17:43Speaker 1: point of the season, but he wasn't today. After the game,
- 17:46Speaker 1: sat at his locker, back to the rest of the room,
- 17:49Speaker 1: staring down. I asked him if he was up for
- 17:52Speaker 1: talking about the game. He said no, which I guess
- 17:55Speaker 1: is understandable. But if Tyler Boyd struggles the way this
- 17:59Speaker 1: offence is going right now, it is going to be
- 18:01Speaker 1: hard to get anything going. Yeah, And then that's where
- 18:04Speaker 1: Alex Rikson tried to step up. Tyler Boyd was struggling.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Alex Rikson eight catches f one hundred and twenty three yards,
- 18:09Speaker 1: one hundred twenty seven yards whatever it was. But he'll
- 18:12Speaker 1: be the first to tell you he could have a
- 18:14Speaker 1: couple of hundred if he catches everything, and he had
- 18:16Speaker 1: you know, a couple of drops, Tyler Boyd, A couple
- 18:20Speaker 1: of drops, you know, that's the thing. I mean, Andy
- 18:22Speaker 1: Dalton probably suffered half a dozen drops or more during
- 18:26Speaker 1: the course of the game. And then you start to press,
- 18:28Speaker 1: You start to press as a quarterback in the fourth quarter,
- 18:30Speaker 1: trying to make plays. Tyler Boyd starts to press. You know,
- 18:33Speaker 1: he let's one drop turn into another. And that's that's
- 18:36Speaker 1: where you have to have that selective amnesia. Put it aside.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I can't let one bad play turn into multiple bad plays.
- 18:43Speaker 1: And that's what's happening to this football team individually and
- 18:46Speaker 1: collectively right now, offensively, and it happened on defense too.
- 18:50Speaker 1: B W. Webb, who's out there gutting it out with
- 18:52Speaker 1: a broken bone in his right forearm. He missed an
- 18:54Speaker 1: opportunity to possible pick six on Jacksonville's opening possession and
- 18:59Speaker 1: had another opp tunity at an interception later in the game. Yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and you know, Jesse Bates was saying that Minshew put
- 19:06Speaker 1: three up there. There's three that they had their hands
- 19:08Speaker 1: on that they feel like, you get your hands on him,
- 19:10Speaker 1: you got to catch the football. And it's ironic that
- 19:13Speaker 1: the great Ken Riley was here as one of the
- 19:15Speaker 1: legends for this football game because he had sixty five
- 19:17Speaker 1: interceptions where people throwing the ball maybe twenty times a game,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and he had sixty five picks. So when it was
- 19:24Speaker 1: there for him to catch it, he caught it. And
- 19:26Speaker 1: that's the bottom line. When opportunities there, take full advantage.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Don't let them fall by the wayside. There was a
- 19:33Speaker 1: positive on Sunday against Jacksonville. The old Geno Atkins was bad.
- 19:38Speaker 1: He was I mean, he bowled a couple of offensive
- 19:41Speaker 1: lineman big time, threw him around. He had two quarterback
- 19:44Speaker 1: sacks early in the football game. Gino played played pretty
- 19:47Speaker 1: darn well. The other guy, I'm going to give a
- 19:50Speaker 1: nod to Kevin Huber. He dictated field position now, I
- 19:53Speaker 1: mean Kevin Huber boom the ball. His average was forty
- 19:57Speaker 1: eight point three, his net was forty five point eight
- 20:00Speaker 1: inside the twenty no touchbacks. So he pinned. He pinned
- 20:03Speaker 1: them back. I mean he was making them go long field,
- 20:06Speaker 1: you know, and they were. They were gained in yards.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I mean they had an over three hundred yards in
- 20:10Speaker 1: the first half and had six points. And it was
- 20:12Speaker 1: all because Huber was pinning them back so deep they
- 20:15Speaker 1: had to go more first downs than they really felt
- 20:18Speaker 1: like they were going to have to score points. So
- 20:21Speaker 1: Kevin Huber played well as well Alex Darks, and there's
- 20:23Speaker 1: a few you know, spots guys that you can say
- 20:27Speaker 1: played played decently, but as as as a totality, nowhere
- 20:31Speaker 1: near good enough. Next, Zach Taylor's current team faces his
- 20:37Speaker 1: former team, the defending NFC champion La Rams, who improved
- 20:41Speaker 1: to four and three on Sunday by blowing out the
- 20:44Speaker 1: Falcons thirty seven to ted. Now time for this week's
- 20:48Speaker 1: fun facts interview, where we get to know the person
- 20:51Speaker 1: under the pads. This week, it's a defensive back who
- 20:54Speaker 1: joined the Bengals as a free agent this offseason and
- 20:58Speaker 1: has been playing since Week two with a broken bone
- 21:01Speaker 1: in his right arm. Time for some fun facts with
- 21:04Speaker 1: Bengals cornerback b W Webb. Your given name is William
- 21:09Speaker 1: Wilson Webb. Why b W? People always forget the junior? Sorry,
- 21:14Speaker 1: it's all good, but um um named under my father.
- 21:18Speaker 1: So uh no, he goes by Bill and Bill sore
- 21:22Speaker 1: for williams. So I just go I should go by
- 21:24Speaker 1: b W. It's got a nice ring to it, I
- 21:26Speaker 1: must say, Oh yeah, sure, sure your parents have a
- 21:30Speaker 1: military background. Is that correct? Yeah, yeah, both retired military,
- 21:34Speaker 1: military and army. So the stereotype is military parents are
- 21:38Speaker 1: very strict. Was that the case with you? I couldn't
- 21:42Speaker 1: get away with anything. I feel like I couldn't do
- 21:44Speaker 1: anything when I was younger, But it is what it is.
- 21:47Speaker 1: We're doing fun facts with b W web. You're from
- 21:50Speaker 1: the Tidewater region of Virginia, Newport News, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, etc.
- 21:56Speaker 1: It's a pipeline for great athletes. Michael Vick, Bruce Smith,
- 22:00Speaker 1: Alan I ver Send, Purnell Whittaker. Is that a big
- 22:03Speaker 1: point of pride for you for sure? Man? You know,
- 22:06Speaker 1: always tell people man like yo, your favorite athlete is
- 22:08Speaker 1: probably from a seven five seven. But h yeah, man,
- 22:12Speaker 1: we breathe, we breathe athletes down there. Man. Something we
- 22:15Speaker 1: take a lot of pride about. And most of the
- 22:18Speaker 1: guys who make it out get it tatted somewhere on them,
- 22:21Speaker 1: you know, either they're a city or the seven five seven,
- 22:24Speaker 1: So we take big pride in Is there a seven
- 22:27Speaker 1: five seven tattooed on Knew somewhere one one hundred percent
- 22:30Speaker 1: right over my chest? In addition to being a great
- 22:32Speaker 1: high school football player. You were an All American in track.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Were you always the fastest kid in the neighborhood going up? Uh? Yeah,
- 22:40Speaker 1: pretty much. Manum, it was crazy. I was always the
- 22:43Speaker 1: smallest guy too. Man. I didn't hit my little gross
- 22:45Speaker 1: spurt until college. But yeah, I was always a fast guy. Man.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I think I got it from a mom. So you
- 22:51Speaker 1: went to William and Mary, and one of the reasons
- 22:53Speaker 1: why you wound up there was the fact that you
- 22:55Speaker 1: weren't very big. I have read five nine, one hundred
- 22:59Speaker 1: and fifty five pounds when you went to college. Is
- 23:01Speaker 1: that accurate? Yeah, it might have been even you know,
- 23:05Speaker 1: they try to give you a couple of pounds. So
- 23:08Speaker 1: one I really remember is like when I first got there,
- 23:11Speaker 1: I think I was like five nine one forty seven.
- 23:15Speaker 1: It was It was crazy. Man. I never really lived
- 23:17Speaker 1: at ways until I got to UH college, so I
- 23:20Speaker 1: helped out. We're talking to B. W. Webb. Few players
- 23:24Speaker 1: in college football history have had a better first game
- 23:28Speaker 1: than you had. Describe what you did in your college debut. Man,
- 23:33Speaker 1: we were playing UVA at their place. First game. Had
- 23:38Speaker 1: the Jitters ended up with three interceptions, one took back
- 23:44Speaker 1: all the way for a touchdown, man, and gave us
- 23:46Speaker 1: to win. So, uh yeah, it was great. It was
- 23:49Speaker 1: a great first in present. So William and Mary knocks
- 23:52Speaker 1: off Virginia. You have three interceptions, including a pick six,
- 23:56Speaker 1: and after your very first college football game, you were
- 23:59Speaker 1: the National d Offensive Player of the week. Yes, sir, man, Man,
- 24:03Speaker 1: it was a dream come true. Man, all the hard
- 24:04Speaker 1: work I put in and man, just a chip I
- 24:07Speaker 1: had on my shoulder. Man from other colleges that overlooked
- 24:11Speaker 1: me told me I was too small, So that was
- 24:14Speaker 1: my thing. I wanted to prove everybody wrong. You had
- 24:16Speaker 1: eight interceptions your freshman year, and then teams started throwing
- 24:20Speaker 1: at the opposite direction. Right, you didn't have many passes
- 24:22Speaker 1: thrown in your direction. Oh yeah, for sure. They learned
- 24:25Speaker 1: their lesson that first year. Well man, they went a
- 24:28Speaker 1: smart way. But uh yeah, I mean that was that
- 24:31Speaker 1: was big for me, man. It kind of show that
- 24:34Speaker 1: teams respected me. We're chatting at b W Webb. William
- 24:37Speaker 1: and Mary is a very prestigious academic institution. It's the
- 24:41Speaker 1: second oldest college university in the country behind Harvard. How
- 24:45Speaker 1: challenging was the school work for you? It was tough, man,
- 24:49Speaker 1: you know it wasn't a big like football school, so
- 24:53Speaker 1: you know, we really didn't get passes on you know,
- 24:57Speaker 1: no teachers looking out for grades or everything. Man. Everything
- 25:00Speaker 1: we had to do ourselves. Man. So uh you know,
- 25:04Speaker 1: going from class to practice and trying to get your
- 25:06Speaker 1: work done, trying to watch film. And it was tough, man,
- 25:09Speaker 1: you know, but I got the hang of him in,
- 25:11Speaker 1: stayed on top of everything and just made the best
- 25:14Speaker 1: of my opportunity. What does a William and Mary degree
- 25:17Speaker 1: mean to you everything? Uh No, It's it's kind of
- 25:22Speaker 1: crazy because you know, it's such a small school, but
- 25:24Speaker 1: a lot of people knew a lot about it. And
- 25:27Speaker 1: I really didn't understand that until after I graduated, and
- 25:30Speaker 1: you know, I got to speak with people in they
- 25:32Speaker 1: would like, oh, you want to William and Mary. But
- 25:34Speaker 1: um man, it's big, man. So many connections people that
- 25:40Speaker 1: you you meet at school. Uh No, Coach Duffner here,
- 25:44Speaker 1: he went to William Mary. Robert Livingston went to William Mary.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Potts went to William and Mary. So it's a big,
- 25:51Speaker 1: traditional school. Man. So after a great college career, there
- 25:55Speaker 1: you are a fourth round draft picked by the Dallas Cowboys,
- 25:57Speaker 1: America's team in twenty thirteen. What was your draft experience? Like?
- 26:01Speaker 1: It was amazing, man, it was a dream come true,
- 26:04Speaker 1: something that I wanted to do for a long time.
- 26:08Speaker 1: But it was kind of it sounds weird, man. It
- 26:11Speaker 1: was kind of bittersweet because on the plane ride, like
- 26:15Speaker 1: actually going to Dallas, I was sad, man because it
- 26:17Speaker 1: was my first time like being away from home, Like, uh,
- 26:21Speaker 1: you know, home from whim Mary was thirty minutes so
- 26:24Speaker 1: I could drop by get a meal from my mom. Man. Man,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I think, Man, I went to Dallas. It was like
- 26:30Speaker 1: twenty two hours away and it was just crazy. Man.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You know, I was gonna miss my parents, family and friends.
- 26:37Speaker 1: But man, I got over it. So I'm s all right.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You have had an unusual NFL career because you basically
- 26:43Speaker 1: changed teams every year, six teams in six years. What
- 26:47Speaker 1: is the most difficult thing about that? And Arthur any
- 26:51Speaker 1: positives to bouncing around from place to place? For sure? Um,
- 26:56Speaker 1: the most challenging thing, man. You have to pick up
- 26:58Speaker 1: the playbook and go ahead and be able to roll
- 27:01Speaker 1: with the punches. But I don't know for me. I
- 27:04Speaker 1: mean I took it as a challenge, man, Um. I
- 27:06Speaker 1: didn't hang my head. I didn't feel bad for myself.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I just seemed as another opportunity to go out there
- 27:11Speaker 1: and showcase my skills. It mean you meet a lot
- 27:13Speaker 1: of people, So I mean I've definitely met a lot
- 27:16Speaker 1: of people in the league. Man, been around a lot
- 27:18Speaker 1: of places, became good friends with a lot of people. So, uh,
- 27:23Speaker 1: some positives that came out of it. Looks like you're
- 27:25Speaker 1: traveling days are over for a while. The bank all
- 27:27Speaker 1: signed you to a three year contract as a free agent.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Was that a relief to have that stability one hundred percent? Man?
- 27:34Speaker 1: Just to be able to grow with the team was
- 27:37Speaker 1: big to me. And be able to have that relationship
- 27:39Speaker 1: with coaches and you know, for them to actually learn
- 27:43Speaker 1: like who I am and not gonna learn who they are,
- 27:45Speaker 1: what they like, what they don't like. It was very
- 27:48Speaker 1: big to me. And you know, God bless me to
- 27:52Speaker 1: sign that contract for three years, so I was looking
- 27:55Speaker 1: looking forward to it. A few more fun facts for
- 27:57Speaker 1: b W Web. If people in Cincinnati see a guy
- 28:00Speaker 1: with long drags riding around on a motorized unicycle, chances
- 28:05Speaker 1: are it's you. You seem to really enjoy that thing.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's it's easy man. I don't gotta you know,
- 28:12Speaker 1: I don't spend too much money on gas. I get
- 28:15Speaker 1: I get from here to my apartment. Quit not in
- 28:18Speaker 1: any traffic. I don't have to wait in any traffic.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So it's all good for me. Man. I get around
- 28:24Speaker 1: the city, man, because I have a big truck, so
- 28:25Speaker 1: it's hard to park it everywhere. And Man, with my
- 28:28Speaker 1: little scooter, I just get in and out. I read
- 28:31Speaker 1: somewhere that you were a roller skater as a kids.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Who have you always been into things on wheels like that? Uh? Yeah, yeah,
- 28:38Speaker 1: you know Newport News every Sunday. You know, we all
- 28:41Speaker 1: go to the roller skating ring. Man have a time.
- 28:43Speaker 1: So that's what we did in my area. Man, everybody
- 28:47Speaker 1: seems like roller skated, and uh that was my thing.
- 28:51Speaker 1: That was our little getaway from from sports or something
- 28:53Speaker 1: back in the day. I can I still do it
- 28:56Speaker 1: to this day. If you could meet anybody in history, athlete, actor, politician,
- 29:03Speaker 1: religious figure, whomever it might be, who would that person be?
- 29:07Speaker 1: Tupac Corp. I don't know him ever since I was younger, man,
- 29:10Speaker 1: I mean I loved his music. Man. He was a
- 29:13Speaker 1: very smart person man, very gifted person. And I mean
- 29:17Speaker 1: I just always just wanted to sit down with him, man,
- 29:19Speaker 1: just kind of pick his brain. Man. But that's one
- 29:21Speaker 1: person for sure. You've done some great things in the
- 29:24Speaker 1: community back home where you're from, celebrity basketball, game, football
- 29:28Speaker 1: camp for kids. What is the crux of your message
- 29:31Speaker 1: when you talk to young people coming out of Newport
- 29:33Speaker 1: News in a seven five seven area. Everybody knows it's
- 29:36Speaker 1: not the best area in the world, and a lot
- 29:38Speaker 1: of kids get caught up, you know, doing dumb things,
- 29:41Speaker 1: getting caught in crimes and everything like that. And I
- 29:44Speaker 1: just want to show him that it's a way out. Man.
- 29:45Speaker 1: You don't have to be a part of all that.
- 29:48Speaker 1: You know, it's guys like myself, Michael fitt Al Narverson
- 29:51Speaker 1: who who came out of this area and we followed
- 29:54Speaker 1: our our dreams, our goals and got to where we
- 29:56Speaker 1: wanted to get. And you know, at times it seems like,
- 30:00Speaker 1: you know, we might just be a face on TV
- 30:03Speaker 1: and and we're not real people. But you know, I
- 30:06Speaker 1: just want to come back and show him that, hey, man,
- 30:08Speaker 1: like I was in the same situation y'all was, and no,
- 30:12Speaker 1: I found the way I made it out. Got a
- 30:14Speaker 1: scholarship so my parents didn't have to pay for a
- 30:17Speaker 1: school because I was the biggest thing. And man, just
- 30:20Speaker 1: to keep grinding, man and no sin, it's gonna be
- 30:22Speaker 1: doubters along the way and everything that happens along the way.
- 30:26Speaker 1: May just use that as motivation. I've enjoyed this. Welcome
- 30:29Speaker 1: to us, Cincinnati. Great to have you part of the
- 30:31Speaker 1: team and the best of luck going forward. Definitely thank you.
