- 0:11Thank you for the worship tonight.
- 0:12Thank you for your voice is tonight.
- 0:16Sometimes when we have music and it's powerful and we have gifted
- 0:20people, it can almost you can almost distract us from
- 0:25participating. And so, every time I'm up here
- 0:27and I hear the voices behind me, it's always an encouragement.
- 0:31It's always a bomb to my soul. So thank you for singing
- 0:33tonight. And now we're going to continue
- 0:35to Worship in the hearing of God's word.
- 0:38And so if you have your Bibles meet First Samuel chapter 22 as
- 0:41we continue in our Bible study in this wonderful exciting
- 0:46riveting. Portion of scripture in the
- 0:49library of God's word, we're going to pray again and we're
- 0:57going to read the first five verses because that's all we're
- 1:00going to discuss tonight, and it will be enough.
- 1:01I hope I'm sure that it will be enough especially if we
- 1:05participate and engage with the text.
- 1:07So, let's just pray one more time as we, as we come before
- 1:11God and His word. Lord, we are.
- 1:13Humbled, we are so, Hungry for your word.
- 1:19We thank you that we can sit in a place like this and look to
- 1:23our left and to the right and see people with Bibles and their
- 1:26hands. And with eagerness in their
- 1:28hearts to receive your word and we pray that we would sense your
- 1:33voice. That this Bible study would not
- 1:37be muddied by opinion. It would not be muddied by the
- 1:42the the weaknesses of a vessel. That is not depending on you.
- 1:47But Lord, we depend on you, I depend on you and we ask Lord
- 1:51for the sake of your name, navigate and lead us through
- 1:55this. Portion of scripture, the way
- 1:56you intended it to be delivered, to the Saints.
- 2:00We give you all the glory and thinks that we have your word at
- 2:04our disposal. We do not take it for granted,
- 2:06but more importantly, though, we asked you would help us obey it
- 2:09to really obey it. We trust in you tonight in Jesus
- 2:13name, amen. First one.
- 2:19David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adam.
- 2:23And when his brothers and all his father's house, heard it,
- 2:26they went down there to him and everyone who is in distress and
- 2:31everyone who was in debt and everyone who was bitter insole
- 2:35gather to him and he became Commander over them.
- 2:40And there are with them about 400 men and David went from
- 2:44there to misbah of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab,
- 2:47please let my father and my mother stay with you.
- 2:51Till I know what God will do for me, and he left them with the
- 2:55king of Moab and stayed with him all the time.
- 2:58That David was in the stronghold.
- 3:01Then the prophet God said to David, do not remain in the
- 3:04stronghold depart and go into the land of Judah.
- 3:07So David departed and went into the forest of harith.
- 3:13Now last week we touched on first Samuel, 21.
- 3:17And first Samuel 21 was the introduction to a new season and
- 3:20David's life up to that point. We heard of David, The Humble
- 3:24Shepherd of Israel. Then we discovered David, the
- 3:27the unexpected hero of Israel. And now we see David as The
- 3:32Fugitive of Israel and in chapter 21, we are introduced to
- 3:37the first steps of David as an exile as an outlaw.
- 3:42And as we examine those verses, we came to the humble
- 3:46conclusion, that David did not prove himself.
- 3:51As praiseworthy. He was driven by much fear.
- 3:56He was driven by much anxiety and it showed itself because he
- 4:00just lied and lied and lied. And we look at that and we think
- 4:07this, this is not seem like the same man that we witnessed a few
- 4:11chapters earlier, who stood before towering Philistine and
- 4:16with a slingshot and simple Faith overcame. and now we see
- 4:23David fearful of King Saul and I believe that that speaks of the
- 4:29complexities of our weaknesses as individuals, I just find an
- 4:34amazing you could stand before a giant and not hesitate to move
- 4:40forward and to fight him. But when it came to King Saul,
- 4:45You running away. And you're lying, and you're
- 4:50sinning, and you're pretending, and you're using fleshly ideas
- 4:56to try to accomplish things. And we think this is
- 5:00inconsistent, but we should not be quick to condemn the man
- 5:03because it describes again, many of us.
- 5:08There's some perhaps in this room that are that are more
- 5:11inclined to be fearful about anything, that poses a threat,
- 5:14even your own shadow scares. You sometimes, whereas there are
- 5:18others who who are generally courageous, but when it comes to
- 5:21certain circumstances they they fall the crush their confused,
- 5:27the thrown into bewilderment but no matter what our disposition
- 5:31is, no matter what the meter of fear is in your life, it is
- 5:36God's will for all of us that whatever fear visits us, it
- 5:40would bow to the faith that you have in the one who is in
- 5:43control of all things, that's God's will fear.
- 5:47Should be a foreign feeling to us, but God is gracious.
- 5:52As we see with David that even though it might be a familiar
- 5:54thing, he takes his time to work on us until becomes Concord And
- 6:00is submits to the truth that we are convinced of and David's
- 6:04going to learn that he's learning that quickly, he
- 6:06actually learns it. By the end of chapter 21, do you
- 6:08remember that he wrote to Psalms and light of his Escape of those
- 6:13men at God? He wrote two songs and those
- 6:15psalms proved that he had repented that after letting
- 6:19saliva slide down his beard and after trying to act like a crazy
- 6:23person so that they can just let him go.
- 6:25He realizes the foolishness of such a thing and he confesses to
- 6:29God, Lies have only brought me to this point.
- 6:32He doesn't say as directly as that, but you know, that he has
- 6:36turned from his ways and he chooses to trust in God, from
- 6:41that moment on and though we see it in those psalms we're going
- 6:44to actually see it in action as we come to chapter 22.
- 6:48So what do we read? What we read in verse 1.
- 6:51He escapes gath, he escapes the Philistines and he finds refuge
- 6:56in a cave in an area called Adam.
- 7:00And this alone shows us just how desperate things got for David
- 7:06because there was no other place that promised him security.
- 7:10There is no other Refuge that he can calculate in his mind that
- 7:12would be that would be enough for him.
- 7:16That would be safe for him. That would be a stronghold for
- 7:19him. So you know where he goes, he
- 7:20goes into a naturally craved hole in some area and some
- 7:26Wilderness and he tucks himself in there and the dark cold damp
- 7:30This of that thing. And it's a sad sight to us,
- 7:33isn't it? I mean, where's your family?
- 7:36You can't go to your wife. You can't go to your parents.
- 7:41You probably question the soldiers that you once worked
- 7:44with because they're under Saul's rule.
- 7:46Where do you go? And this man has settled and
- 7:51it's hard. I have to whether this all by
- 7:52myself and I'm not guessing, I'm not, I'm not trying to speculate
- 7:57here because we are told that, we know that David believe that
- 8:01this point I'm I have to do this all alone and he expresses that
- 8:06utter loneliness, would, you know, it in a Psalm that he
- 8:10wrote while in this cave? How many songs did David right
- 8:14in light of this chapter? Does anybody know?
- 8:18Two. Some 57 Psalm 142, you have your
- 8:24Bibles right? Let's go to Psalm 142 and let's
- 8:26see what he says in that. Psalm in light of this, this is
- 8:29why again, we read the entirety of scripture because we see the
- 8:33Glorious Harmony of the word of God Psalm 142, look at the title
- 8:38of his psalm. In verse 1, it says a masculine
- 8:42of David when he was in the cave a prayer.
- 8:46So just imagine David writing this out, crying out to God.
- 8:52As he is hiding in a cave and look what he says here in verse
- 8:574. He's praying to God, he's he's
- 9:00crying out to the Lord. Look to the right.
- 9:02And see there is none who takes notice of Me, no, refuge remains
- 9:08to me. No one cares for my soul.
- 9:15He's convinced of that and his circumstances seem to prove that
- 9:20I can't go anywhere as he's traveling from gath, he's
- 9:22thinking, where can I go? And because of such a destitute
- 9:26State, he is convinced nobody. Nobody cares for me, and I
- 9:32believe that although many people have experienced
- 9:35different levels of trauma. One of the greatest pains you
- 9:38can know in this life is when you have convinced yourself that
- 9:42you are not loved. We are relational creatures, God
- 9:46made us in His image, he is relational within himself and so
- 9:50you and I need contact with other humans, but not just
- 9:53contact with, I mean, help. We need to know that we are we
- 9:57are cared for and we are cherished.
- 10:00There's healing in that there is there's some sort of anchor in
- 10:05that. And David here, he believes that
- 10:10that is not the case. His circumstances have have told
- 10:14them and convince him otherwise. And so he's in this place where
- 10:19he's expressing himself to God, no one cares for my soul and I
- 10:23find that quite fascinating, because as he's expressing, the
- 10:27lack of compassion of those around him, he's speaking to the
- 10:30one who cares about him the most He's communicating his ache, but
- 10:36he's also coming to the one who will love him more than if all
- 10:41of Israel had come to his help. And that is one of the treasures
- 10:46that you and I have in Jesus Christ.
- 10:49That is one of the great jewels of the Gospel.
- 10:53Yes. Safe from the wrath of God.
- 10:54Yes, saved for heaven. Yes, saved from hell but also
- 10:59saved to be brought to God. And every single one of you in
- 11:05this place tonight, if you have put your faith in Jesus,
- 11:08genuinely, if you have repented and believed on God, you can
- 11:12claim a personal intimate relationship with the Risen Lord
- 11:18and because of your faith, you so honors, your faith that he
- 11:22has committed himself to you. As he did to David.
- 11:28He has committed himself, he is bound himself to you, not just
- 11:32to secure your salvation, but to govern your life and to lead
- 11:37you, and to shape you and to allow everything that comes
- 11:41against you to be filtered through his Sovereign purpose,
- 11:45so that it can only do good to you.
- 11:49So here's David though, sharing his pain.
- 11:54He's actually sharing it with the friend of friends.
- 11:59The one that will care for him the most and that's your
- 12:03inheritance in mind, in fact. we see that although he believes
- 12:07this at first, His beliefs are going to change by the end of
- 12:12the song. Look at the last verse, and what
- 12:14does he say here? As he pours out his heart?
- 12:17To God, he says, in verse 7, bring me out of prison that I
- 12:22may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me
- 12:26for, you will deal bountifully with me.
- 12:30That's the beauty of the Psalms because yes there are honest and
- 12:34yes we see the transparency of a man although he's a man of God
- 12:38of the Brokenness that he knows. But oftentimes in those psalms
- 12:42of lament, they end with faith. They end with a trust.
- 12:47A declaration of confidence in the Lord.
- 12:51And although you and I listen, you can discover a knowledge of
- 12:55Christ, not just theologically though that's important.
- 12:59And I just theoretically and not just through cramming certain
- 13:03verses together, but you can know, you can discover something
- 13:06about Jesus, where you tangibly know his faithfulness to you and
- 13:10it actually heals you and comforts you And Paul himself.
- 13:15That's not a foreign idea. Paul himself says in.
- 13:17Second Timothy, everyone has deserted me but the Lord stood
- 13:21by me. He wasn't just speaking into the
- 13:25air that he wasn't being poetic. He was like I really sense God's
- 13:28nearness to me even though my fellow missionaries have
- 13:32abandoned me those who have served have left me the Lord
- 13:36stood by me you can you can know Jesus that way.
- 13:41That's true in the old. That's true in the new, that's
- 13:43true today, but we cannot limit how God dispenses his comfort.
- 13:50We cannot be narrow in our understanding of how God
- 13:52manifests his goodness in your life and mine because God could
- 13:56have sent a torrent of peace to flood.
- 13:59The soul of David. But we realize that David here,
- 14:02recognizes how God is going to embrace him.
- 14:09And make his comfort known to him.
- 14:11Did you see it? The righteous will surround me
- 14:16for. You will deal bountifully with
- 14:20me. See what David realized, David
- 14:25made the connection that the actual physical emotional
- 14:31support that he would know from actual people was a direct
- 14:37expression of God's goodness. His life.
- 14:41In other words, the fact that David is going to as we read
- 14:46have his parents come to him and his brothers come to him.
- 14:51He sees that as God's direct means of comforting him.
- 14:58In other words, the righteous in David's life are God's provision
- 15:03for the relief in this pressing season.
- 15:08And you and I have to see it that way, we have to understand
- 15:11that this is how God's work that when you and I are surrounded by
- 15:14Christ. Honoring God fearing people who
- 15:17live to reflect his character. That is not disconnected from
- 15:22God. Loving you, that is not
- 15:25disconnect from God showing Mercy to you actually caring for
- 15:30you. So don't limit it to some
- 15:33mystical Supernatural experience, where you're
- 15:35showered with almost this coating that You're almost
- 15:39Untouchable, God can do that. But look what David says you're
- 15:42going to deal bountifully to me, I'm gonna know you're
- 15:45overwhelming favor because I'm going to be able to pick up my
- 15:48phone and call somebody and they're going to be able to give
- 15:50me some wisdom. Or I'm going to be visited by
- 15:54some people from church and they're going to, they're going
- 15:56to bring me food and they're going to sit beside me.
- 16:00And I see that as you dealing. So bountifully with me, And this
- 16:07is not just an idea. This is theological.
- 16:11This is true throughout scripture.
- 16:14You don't have to turn there but listen to what Paul says about
- 16:16his friend Titus, he says in 2nd Corinthians 7 6 but God who
- 16:22comforts the downcast. Now how would you finish that
- 16:25sentence? But God who comforts the
- 16:28downcast provides a peace that surpasses all understanding and
- 16:33he does opens your mind to understand the height the depth,
- 16:36the breadth of the love of Christ and he dies but it's not
- 16:40what Paul says. But God who comforts the
- 16:42downcast comforted Us by the Meaning of Titus.
- 16:47Titus showed up. Titus knocked on the door.
- 16:51Titus arrived. And as Titus came, his presence
- 16:56was a manifestation of God's comfort.
- 17:00To a downcast people. What I'm trying to communicate
- 17:04to you tonight, is that you would see God behind those acts
- 17:08of love. From familiar people.
- 17:12Hey, you would be able to identify God's personal care for
- 17:17you through things, that move your heart from those that you
- 17:22do life with. But you and I just think that
- 17:25person you and I just have a stir of affection for that
- 17:28individual, but you would be able to worship God even more.
- 17:32As you are, able to receive the encouragement and the life
- 17:36giving gifts of other people in your life.
- 17:39I hope you see that some of you have have gone through difficult
- 17:43seasons in life. And so what you did was you
- 17:47either reached out or someone reached out to you as a minister
- 17:49or counselor and they sat with you and they listen to you and
- 17:52they pray with you. Can I ask you something tonight?
- 17:54Did you Consider that that was God.
- 17:57Introducing that vessel into your life.
- 17:59Because God loved you in that season.
- 18:04Some of you have known the warmth and the healing of the
- 18:09Simplicity of the Believers presence in your living room.
- 18:13When you had a difficult week and them just sitting there and
- 18:18making you laugh brought relief to your heart but can I ask you?
- 18:24Did you recognize that? That was God dealing bountifully
- 18:28with you. because my Bible says, it is It is God's doing, it's
- 18:37not separated from his doing. See God through that.
- 18:42And you will know worship with a greater intensity that you
- 18:46didn't know before but this brings up another point that
- 18:50although God is responsible for the righteous who stand with us
- 18:54when we can barely stand. Our own, there is a
- 18:56responsibility that you and I carry.
- 18:58So let's go back to First same and we're still in verse 11.
- 19:01And look at verse 1, of chapter, 22, David departed from there
- 19:04and escaped. To the cave of Adam, we must
- 19:07read our Bible slowly and when his brothers and all his How's
- 19:12did, what? What did they do?
- 19:17They heard it. They heard about it.
- 19:22And when this news came to them, they went down there to him,
- 19:26this is for our instruction. Yes, God is responsible for
- 19:31those people in our lives, but there's a responsibility that
- 19:34you and I carry, and that is to be so aware of the situation and
- 19:40the circumstances, and the things that are brothers and
- 19:43sisters are enduring that when this news becomes known to us,
- 19:47it moves us to action that should be our reflex as the body
- 19:51of Christ. That should be our response.
- 19:54We should be so we should be so intricately woven together.
- 19:59In RIT that there is an immediate support.
- 20:02There's an immediate reaction of needing to know what to do to
- 20:06help. That's the beauty of the body of
- 20:08Christ. And, you know, there's a there's
- 20:11a portion in the Old Testament in the book of Exodus.
- 20:14It's it's after chapter VII given after chapter after
- 20:18chapter 15, chapters about the Tabernacle being built, and
- 20:20there's a little verse in there that never ceases to bless my
- 20:25heart and make me, pray, a certain prayer when I come to
- 20:28him because Moses receives the instructions for the Tabernacle
- 20:32and he even received the list of the materials and their costly
- 20:36materials, he makes it known to the nation of Israel and so
- 20:39every Go morning, the people of Israel, line up to give to the
- 20:43Craftsman, the material needed to make this structure possible.
- 20:49And something happens, at one point the support the
- 20:53contribution was so great. That the servants come to Moses
- 20:57and I want you to hear what they said.
- 20:59You don't have to turn there but just listen to these words in
- 21:01Exodus 30 65 They said to Moses, the people bring much more than
- 21:08enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.
- 21:15So here's Pastor Moses. Standing there.
- 21:19Receiving instruction from Heaven about how to build this
- 21:21dwelling place for God, and the people are so excited.
- 21:26There's so in tune. They're so willing that it came
- 21:29to the point where the servants approach Moses said, hey Moses,
- 21:32you got to tell them to stop giving because we have more than
- 21:36enough and then we re later on that.
- 21:38He restrains, the people from bringing And every time I read,
- 21:43I say Lord may this church May. Our church have the same
- 21:49attitude when it comes to building your house in the New
- 21:51Covenant. the as we are the temple of God and as God is
- 21:56building us and and Furnishing us and fashioning us to be the
- 22:01bride that Jesus purchased That every time there is someone who
- 22:05is sick, weak broken, missing in need of assistance, the support
- 22:11would be overwhelming. I'm not talking about financial
- 22:15giving here. I'm talking about the, the
- 22:18stones that make up the house of God, not the physical structure.
- 22:21There's a time and place for that.
- 22:23I'm talking about as God is building this house, that
- 22:25whenever we see a piece missing broken that the support the
- 22:30participation would be so overwhelming that we would say
- 22:33brothers and sisters. So, and so asked, stop blowing
- 22:35up their phone. They're doing great.
- 22:38They're doing wonderful. Thank you.
- 22:40May that be The culture of MBC. God is able to do it, and that's
- 22:47what we see with them. They they heard that their
- 22:49brother Was in some obscure place all by himself and it move
- 22:54them to action and this brings up the second point of this
- 22:58verse. Yes, we see.
- 23:01We see that David realized that in his suffering God expresses
- 23:05his means of comfort in different ways but we also see
- 23:07the wisdom of God in suffering. Can anybody hear help us
- 23:13understand the family, dynamics of David and his household?
- 23:18What do we know about Dave and his household?
- 23:26How would you, how would you feel?
- 23:28If the prophet of God comes? And he says, God has told me,
- 23:31one of your son's has an important duty to fulfill and
- 23:35your father doesn't consider you out of all the sun's.
- 23:37Everybody else comes to the party, but your left into the
- 23:40field. Would that make you feel good?
- 23:43No, I'm sure somebody like that would have to go through many
- 23:45counseling sessions. Actually.
- 23:47I'm serious. What else?
- 23:50Tommy? Family Dynamics, what else?
- 23:51Have we learned up to this point with David and his family that
- 23:54gives us an idea of what it's like, and his household.
- 24:00Yeah, so David comes to the battlefield and he provides
- 24:05goods for his brothers and Elijah, criticizes him, and even
- 24:09falsely accused him of pride and arrogance.
- 24:13So those are the two snapshots, the main snapshots that you and
- 24:16I get of David's family and it makes us realize and gives us an
- 24:21impression that it's not the most healthy household.
- 24:26But what happens here? David is in a low place and his
- 24:33family comes together. His brothers come together.
- 24:38What does that say about what they did with Saul?
- 24:40Does anybody know? Who are the three older ones and
- 24:46what were they doing? Were they serving in Saul's
- 24:47army? Yes, they were.
- 24:50So what do they do? They cut ties with him.
- 24:53Because to now come and support David.
- 24:55At this point, is to make a declaration, we side with David
- 24:59and we stand against all. And so the three all this along
- 25:04with the others and the parents now come to support David.
- 25:11And here's the beauty of this because I read that, I thought
- 25:14here's Saul creating havoc in Israel breaking up homes,
- 25:19causing confusion and chaos. And in the midst of all of that
- 25:25David's families, coming closer together.
- 25:29I don't know if they've ever been this supportive of each
- 25:32other. I don't know if David has ever
- 25:33seen and observed such love and care and Sacrifice from his
- 25:38loved ones. But it's happening in the midst
- 25:40of all of this. Here's the thing, if you and I
- 25:43really believe that all things work together for the good of
- 25:45those who love him who are called according to his purpose.
- 25:47Then you and I by the spirits, help must be able to recognize
- 25:51the good even in the midst of suffering.
- 25:54Because while David is, in during a personal trial, God is
- 25:57healing his family. And so, why why resist a
- 26:05semester of suffering in the school of God?
- 26:08When you know that this illustration among so many
- 26:11proves to us that God is doing a deeper and greater work than we
- 26:14can perceive? And so, the brothers come.
- 26:20And the parents come. And yeah, it's a mystery of God,
- 26:23why why God allows the righteous to suffer.
- 26:25But here's something that's never a mystery, there's always
- 26:28sanctifying purpose in it. Always.
- 26:32And sometimes in ways that we don't realize immediately,
- 26:35that's what's happening here. But these are not the only ones
- 26:38that have come to look at verse 2 now.
- 26:39And everyone who is in this dress and everyone who is in
- 26:43debt and everyone who was bitter and soul gathered to him and he
- 26:47became Commander over them. And there are Some of about 400
- 26:52men. So now we read this interesting
- 26:55description of this band of men that joined David and the cave.
- 26:59One thing we hear is that there's 400 and that seems
- 27:03encouraging in itself, but it's not much when you compare it to
- 27:07Saul's Army. But what's worthy of our
- 27:10discussion tonight is is what kind of men they are.
- 27:15Look at this, distressed in debt, Bitter and soul.
- 27:23When you read that, you have to be careful.
- 27:26Not to think that this is just a raggedy bunch of rebels that see
- 27:31an opportunity to come against all and David's the way to make
- 27:35it possible. So let's start a coupe here and
- 27:37let's just gather around them, and maybe we can overtake this
- 27:41Kingdom. That's not the description of
- 27:43these men at all. Who thinks you're that?
- 27:48These men have come to encourage David.
- 27:53Because we might read it that way, right?
- 27:54Like God God sent the brothers and God sent the parents.
- 27:58And look at this. Now, here's another way. 400
- 28:01men. That makes an exile Journey.
- 28:03A lot more comfortable. That makes you feel a lot more
- 28:06safe, but I don't think the primary purpose of this being
- 28:09given to us. Is to show that David is
- 28:12receiving more encouragement. I believe it's to show that
- 28:15these men have come to receive comfort from David.
- 28:22Could it be possible that this description they were in
- 28:24distress? They were in debt.
- 28:26They were bitter and soul was because they've lived under the
- 28:28rule and reign of Saul and this was the consequence of it.
- 28:34And so, when they, when they saw David and that they could see
- 28:37this tension and David fleeing they recognize in the heart,
- 28:41that's that's the true king. That's the one that God's really
- 28:44chosen. That's one was really able to
- 28:46bring Israel to God's intent for us as a people.
- 28:51And so, we're going to follow David.
- 28:54We're going to choose to stay with him, even though it will
- 28:56cost us very much. And that is the case that is
- 29:01exactly what's happening. So let's let's look at another
- 29:03important element of personal suffering here. but even though
- 29:08he's in during a certain trial, God is allowing that this season
- 29:15of suffering to actually minister to other people.
- 29:20So while David is being comforted, it doesn't take very
- 29:23long until God uses David to be Comfort to others.
- 29:28Because of there's anybody who can help a group of men who are
- 29:32bitter distress and in debt because of a king, it's this
- 29:36man. It's this man.
- 29:40So here's the thing suffering of any kind.
- 29:42Listen, very carefully tonight for the sake of your
- 29:45encouragement, suffering of any kind.
- 29:49If it's physical, emotional mental, there is nothing that
- 29:53you've endured that will be wasted.
- 29:56There is nothing that you've endured that as sabotage your
- 29:59usefulness to God. God will use all of that
- 30:04suffering, all of that pain, all of those tears.
- 30:08With circumstances that were beyond your control to
- 30:11immediately, recycle it, if not, then then soon enough to
- 30:15actually bless and uplift and build others.
- 30:19Because that's what the Bible says the same.
- 30:22Paul who said, God, who comforts the downcast as comfort Us by
- 30:25the coming of Titus. You know what he said, he said
- 30:28in that same book early on So that we may be able to comfort
- 30:34those. Who are in any Affliction with
- 30:37the comfort, with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
- 30:40And second Corinthians 14, we were comforted by God, not just
- 30:45for our sake, but for the sake of others, so that we can share
- 30:49that same comfort with those who are in any Affliction.
- 30:52So, here's the beauty. When you suffer, God, intends to
- 30:56recycle that suffering in order for it to be a weapon to Aid and
- 31:01to assist others who are suffering.
- 31:05And this is what I often tell people who are sit with on a
- 31:08personal level that needs some counselor.
- 31:09Anything I tend to say, especially when they are
- 31:12responding with with a desire to obey and Trust in God's wisdom,
- 31:16one day, though, you may not be a pastor one day, you will sit
- 31:19on this side of the room and you will look into the eyes of
- 31:22another desperate soul and you can tell them, God brought me
- 31:25through the same thing. You'll be able to bring you
- 31:27through it as well. So these four hundred men come
- 31:32David early on said the righteous will surround me, not
- 31:36just for the sake of being built up himself.
- 31:38But now he's about to, he's about to build up, 400 guys that
- 31:41are just tired or tired of living under the reign of Saul.
- 31:47Do you see the prophetic imagery here?
- 31:51Do you see Jesus in this verse? Do you see the description of
- 31:56such men paralleling? The description of the soul that
- 32:01comes to Christ. Do you not see it?
- 32:05How often it is for people to come to this point in life.
- 32:10Distressed aware of their bankruptcy in the soul, bitter
- 32:15and spirit, bitter with life bitter because they realize that
- 32:19they are a terrible master of their own existence.
- 32:24They then began to explore the possibility of Jesus, actually
- 32:28being the true king of kings and the Lord of lords.
- 32:32You see these men come to David to find relief and the same
- 32:36description of men today. Come to the son of David to find
- 32:40that same relief. I can't tell you the amount of
- 32:44people that I have even had conversations with And some of
- 32:48them have converted to the faith.
- 32:49And some of them have come very close, but we're not convinced
- 32:52enough. When they only have realized the
- 32:57lack of satisfaction that comes. From living for themselves.
- 33:04Do they then entertain Jesus Christ as Lord?
- 33:10And that's that's I believe one of the main ways in which a
- 33:13person truly surrenders to Jesus Christ when you have learned, I
- 33:23can't do this. This world has nothing to offer
- 33:26me. I I can't find pleasure.
- 33:30I can't find Joy. I can't find peace.
- 33:32I can't find a security in my eternal destination.
- 33:35I can't arrive. There I am exhausted, I am
- 33:38distressed. I find myself no matter how much
- 33:41I give, no matter what kind of projects I create the matter.
- 33:44How much I change my luck, no matter how much I change my
- 33:47house, no matter how I changed my car, my friends, my
- 33:51destination, my place of a dress, no matter how much I
- 33:54change. Why am I still empty?
- 33:57It's been years. It's only then where the gospel
- 34:01begins to sound very attractive. Not for all, but for many, and
- 34:07let me tell you tonight, why many people do not forsake, the
- 34:12reign of Satan and of the Flesh, and of the world, because they
- 34:17still believe. That's all has something to
- 34:20offer them. They still believe that living
- 34:27as the Lord of their own lives, will promise something greater
- 34:31than bowing, your knee, at the foot of the cross.
- 34:34Can I prove that to you in this text scroll down to verse 7.
- 34:36We're not going to be there tonight, but look how saw speaks
- 34:38to some of his other men when he realizes that people are leaving
- 34:42his ranks and saw said to his servants who stood about him
- 34:46here? Now people have Benjamin, will
- 34:48the son of Jesse give everyone of you fields and Vineyards.
- 34:52Will he make you all? There's of thousands of
- 34:54commanders of hundreds. What a liar.
- 35:01What a manipulator. What a deceiver and saw here is
- 35:04a picture of Satan who Whispers false promises in the ears of
- 35:10men, including those who have grown up in the church so that
- 35:13they would not come to the conclusion that Jesus Christ is
- 35:16Worthy. He is worthy.
- 35:20To be crowned as the Lord Of My Life.
- 35:25That's what it really is down deep inside.
- 35:28There's something still out there.
- 35:30There's something I still have to explore.
- 35:31There's something I still want to Endeavor to accomplish and I
- 35:35just believe that Jesus will ruin my plans.
- 35:41You know what I appreciate about ministering to youth talking
- 35:44about high school early, High School, Middle School, is how
- 35:47honest they are, how honest they are.
- 35:50And I can't tell you the times that I've talked to Youth and
- 35:53how they've told me, I'm just scared that Jesus is going to
- 35:56ruin my plans. He's going to give me a wife
- 35:59that I don't want as though. God works that way.
- 36:03He's going to give me a job that I don't want he's going to call
- 36:05me to a place that's too cold. I've had these conversation.
- 36:08I'm looking like You're going to destroy your life.
- 36:18Not only are you going to destroy your life?
- 36:20Now you're going to destroy your soul for all eternity.
- 36:24I've even had a conversation with one person who said let me
- 36:26just try it out, I said that's not how it works.
- 36:32It's not how it works. You hope that it works that way,
- 36:35you think that you are so Sovereign that you can determine
- 36:37the consequence of your sin. I said you will come out with
- 36:40scars for sure. But you might never come out at
- 36:44all and be totally destroyed. And we, as people should love
- 36:50people enough to tell them that, because this is what Satan is
- 36:53telling other people look, look at what you're going to miss out
- 36:55on. Look at where you going to
- 36:56forsake, look at what I'm able to give you.
- 37:01And sometimes it's not Satan directly obviously he
- 37:03masquerades as an angel of Light, he uses people, he uses
- 37:07false teachers. And these men do have come to
- 37:13the conclusion that Saul is a liar.
- 37:17Salt is a liar. And so, look at this other point
- 37:20here. They choose to pledge their
- 37:24allegiance to David. When it was the least
- 37:26convenient, it was David wasn't on a throne.
- 37:31David and I have this impressive Army know.
- 37:35He was he was at zero. You can say he was all by
- 37:39himself and yet they so believe that Destiny of God for David.
- 37:44They sold believe the hand of God, the anointing on him that
- 37:47they came to him when there is nothing profitable for them and
- 37:51choosing to do so at least initially.
- 37:55In fact that this put them in greater risk, you have a
- 37:58demented man who's ready to kill his son-in-law.
- 38:02Surely he's willing to kill all of us and yet still they truly
- 38:06believe in the heart of hearts that he is worthy.
- 38:09God is worthy. This plan that God has for David
- 38:12and for all of us is more precious than our own lives.
- 38:15So we will surrender to the purposes of God in David.
- 38:20And we will come to him. If this is the attitude, towards
- 38:24a man for a temporary Kingdom, how much more the Christ and how
- 38:28much more his eternal Kingdom and how much more the
- 38:31willingness to follow him. Even if it doesn't benefit you
- 38:34one bit in the physical, even if it doesn't promise you, one
- 38:38thing in this world, he is still worthy to be followed in a cave.
- 38:45As these men illustrate. So they do.
- 38:50And we read in verse 3 and David went from there to miss pay of
- 38:55Moab and he said to the king of Moab, please let my father and
- 39:00my mother stay with you till I know what God will do for me.
- 39:06What do you see there? What do you see here?
- 39:11I see another element of suffering.
- 39:13I see another ingredient of How To Suffer.
- 39:15Well, I see a man who was pressed by great anxieties who
- 39:21is constantly looking over his shoulder because at any time saw
- 39:24can can appear with a band of men with arrows and Spears.
- 39:28And yet, in the midst of all of that, he has a concern.
- 39:33And what's his concern, the well-being of my parents,
- 39:38They're elderly, they can't travel with this robust.
- 39:42Youthful band of men, And so even before David moves on in
- 39:49his Exile, he sets it as a priority to take care of his
- 39:54parents. He suffering he is suffering,
- 39:59but here's the thing about suffering suffering should never
- 40:01make us selfish. That even though you and I might
- 40:07be in during certain things that you might be fighting a private
- 40:11war, that others do not know about in your mind, in your
- 40:14heart as you lay in bed, all by yourself.
- 40:17Even though such things may be real, and sometimes
- 40:20overwhelming, they never should encourage us to neglect our
- 40:24duties. Never.
- 40:27There are some unique moments and Urgent circumstances that
- 40:31would cause you to receive help and that give it out as much.
- 40:36But I'm not speaking about those circumstances.
- 40:38I'm speaking about how you and I will through many tribulations
- 40:42enter the kingdom of God. And through those tribulations,
- 40:45we must still be aware that we can still be of help to others.
- 40:49And there are still responsibilities.
- 40:51That God has called me to. And David realized that there
- 40:55was a law written in the book of Exodus that you shall honor your
- 40:58father and mother. So I'm going to take care of
- 41:03them. And he does.
- 41:07And that's the essence of obedience.
- 41:08It doesn't feel good all the time.
- 41:09It's not convenient, but there's a duty to fulfill.
- 41:13And even though we are enduring something God supplies, the
- 41:16grace in the strength, to still be faithful to his commands.
- 41:20And that's what this man does. And you know what's amazing here
- 41:25is that his character shining because it reflects the
- 41:28character of God, he's honoring his parents.
- 41:30And we just heard that his father didn't give him the best
- 41:32treatment as a Young Man. Because the essence of honoring,
- 41:38your parents is not, it's not I fry and tooth for tooth.
- 41:41The faith element of honoring. Your parents is that even though
- 41:45they might have not honored me, even though I can find many
- 41:48faults even though I can point back to moments where they've
- 41:50really hurt me. God commanded me to honor them.
- 41:53And so I will honor them. And what is honor?
- 41:56Look like, it doesn't look like you just overlooking their sins.
- 42:01It looks like you despite what they've done to you, to still
- 42:04love them and love. Is to care for them and their
- 42:08need to provide the basic necessities for them as they
- 42:12come to a place in life where they can't take care of
- 42:14themselves. And so, David says, before we
- 42:19even move on, guys, I know we have a plan.
- 42:21I know we're trying to figure this out.
- 42:22My mom and dad need to be at a different place because it's
- 42:26going to hurt them more if they come.
- 42:28And so what does he do? He goes to Moab, but look at
- 42:31this. Look at the quality of his care.
- 42:33He doesn't just go to Moab and drop him off at a hotel.
- 42:35He goes, Goes to the king of Moab, Royal Treatment.
- 42:39No pun intended. I'm going to take you to the
- 42:42king of Moab, the most secure place, the most profitable, the
- 42:47most The most safe place for my parents and he goes and he
- 42:52offers an invitation for this King to take care of his parents
- 42:56and it worked she when you and I obey God's commands, we don't
- 43:01try to do the bare minimum. We don't just try to quiet our
- 43:05conscience and do something poorly.
- 43:07We try to do it with the greatest effort.
- 43:11And the greatest strength and the greatest option and that's
- 43:16what he's doing with his parents.
- 43:20Why did he go to Moab? So if you remember in Ruth, we
- 43:29read a mini genealogy and and David is related to a moabite is
- 43:34named Ruth. And so, he's hoping that as he
- 43:37goes to this people group, though, they are not the people
- 43:40of God that because of his his mixed-race, they would be able
- 43:43to relate and, and provide some assistance, and it worked.
- 43:47So he goes to the moabites and he asked for help with his
- 43:51parents. and God honored that But look at his faith.
- 43:56Where's the faith of David? The faith that we did not see in
- 43:59chapter 21 and verse 3. Look what he says to the man
- 44:04What does he say? It's right there.
- 44:13Till I know what God will do for me.
- 44:16Unashamedly telling this Pagan king, would you take care of my
- 44:20parents until the true God? Reveals to me, the next step.
- 44:25This is a this is a different David than the one who came
- 44:28before the king of gath and shook, like a crazy man and let
- 44:32saliva out of his mouth, he learned, he truly repented, he
- 44:37knew personal Revival and faith in God, he comes to this King.
- 44:41He says, would you take care of my parents?
- 44:43Until God shows me the next step and I'll tell you why, that is
- 44:46so encouraging and exemplary for us.
- 44:50He's not just speaking in generalities here until God
- 44:52shows me there. There's a man about to find you.
- 44:56There's a king chasing you and you're willing you're willing to
- 45:00stop in your place and wait on God, to give you the next step.
- 45:06That's trust, that's Trust. And so already, we are convinced
- 45:11that from chapter 21 to this chapter, he has made a great
- 45:15development in his trust in God. I'm not going to move until God
- 45:20shows me what to do next and you're going to see that faith
- 45:23strengthened will be couple of episodes where he falls back
- 45:26again, but you're gonna see him strengthened and strengthened in
- 45:28his trust in God. And he does, he does here.
- 45:34And God Honors that Faith because God is so pleased with
- 45:38faith. That is heart is moved by that.
- 45:42It's moved into action. Look at verse 4.
- 45:45He left them with the king of Moab and they stayed with him
- 45:47all the time. That David was in the
- 45:49stronghold. Then the prophet God said to
- 45:52David, do not remain in the stronghold, the part and go into
- 45:56the land of Judah. This is this is a blessing and
- 46:02I'll tell you why. Because David here, although as
- 46:08we read in the Psalms he was living in the unknown, it was a
- 46:12very dark place. He could not even believe that
- 46:16people loved him. God was watching him the whole
- 46:19time. God was observing him.
- 46:22God was providing means of comfort to him.
- 46:25And finally at the right time when the faith was there, when
- 46:29that trust remained. God showed him where to go next.
- 46:36That is. a promise for you and I That you and I can trust that
- 46:42his leadership is perfect. It may not be convenient, it may
- 46:47not be free from challenges but it is perfect.
- 46:50It is absolutely perfect. And in this case with David, It
- 46:57was Supernatural a true, Prophet comes and tells them what to do
- 47:02in your case in mind. Can God do it.
- 47:03Supernaturally. Absolutely.
- 47:05But oftentimes God does a providentially and it's just as
- 47:08impressive. He loves circumstances to come
- 47:12doors to shut doors to open. And we say, ah, but one thing
- 47:15that he will guarantee you and me is that he will never leave
- 47:19us. He will never abandon us.
- 47:22You always move us forward as we continue to trust in him.
- 47:27And here's where the faith is shown even more, God says, what
- 47:31do not remain in the stronghold depart and go into the land of
- 47:34Judea? Why is that a troubling command?
- 47:38Why is that troubling command? It was safe there.
- 47:46Are you sure you heard from God? God, this is a really good
- 47:49place. I got 400 men and not only is it
- 47:52safe here. He's telling him to go back to
- 47:55the land. Where Saul is ruling and
- 47:57reigning. Go back to Judah.
- 48:03Wouldn't you tell me to go a different direction?
- 48:05Maybe further this way? No gold back to the area that
- 48:09would make you more vulnerable and observable.
- 48:13And David doesn't hesitate. He goes, He departs into that
- 48:19area. And here is here's a lesson
- 48:22about obedience as you heard it before.
- 48:26It doesn't always appease. Our senses doesn't always
- 48:31satisfy reason doesn't contradict reason, but it
- 48:36doesn't always satisfy what we think is best our own
- 48:40calculations in our own ideas of how to bring about the best
- 48:43result of something. God will put us in circumstances
- 48:48and situations and dilemmas, where there is a clear word of
- 48:52how to deal with it. But there will be a pressure it
- 48:55within and outside to do it differently sometimes.
- 48:58Even sinfully and the faith is, will you trust me in this?
- 49:03Will you trust me? And David has learned from
- 49:05chapter 21 when I try to do it my way I lied.
- 49:09I pretended to be insane and it brought me know where I'm going
- 49:13to trust God even though to the watching eyes.
- 49:15They look insane. It may look simplistic.
- 49:18It may look silly, I'm going to trust the word of God, and
- 49:22that's what he does. He goes into that place and it's
- 49:26in that place. Where, as next week we come,
- 49:30we're going to see We're going to see how his faith is going to
- 49:33be tested even more. His leadership is perfect
- 49:36brothers and sisters. It's absolutely perfect, but
- 49:38it's not free from challenges. It's not free from emotional and
- 49:47even physical pain, but it is free from unnecessary grief.
- 49:52It is free from unnecessary, shame and regret.
- 49:59But challenging chapters, you signed up to follow Christ.
- 50:02It's inevitable, it's promised and David understood that at
- 50:06this point of his Exile. I've learned that it's not going
- 50:09to be easy, but if I'm holding onto his hand, I will be safe.
- 50:13And he does, he goes, let me end with this thought.
- 50:17David had how many men? What else did David have?
- 50:23I'll tell you what. He had.
- 50:25He had God's spirit on his life. Saul, we're going to find out
- 50:30have thousands of men. Thousands.
- 50:33He had a palace. He had chariots, he had
- 50:37Authority. But he didn't have the spirit of
- 50:41God. Numbers and resources.
- 50:48Are not the Criterion of God's blessing, on a Ministry, or on
- 50:53the minister. If we looked at this in the
- 51:00flesh, we would see David with 400 raggedy guys.
- 51:04Depressed, face, fallen in a cave, wandering, and then we
- 51:10would look at saw in his Palace. And all the weaponry.
- 51:16You know how many people would would estimate that?
- 51:18Here's a man who is successful for God.
- 51:20And here's a man who is questionable.
- 51:23He had all the while God was with this group and not with
- 51:25this group. How do you measure success?
- 51:31Do not be fooled by packed stadiums.
- 51:34Do not be fooled by YouTube views.
- 51:35Not be fooled by even the money coming into a certain Ministry.
- 51:40It's the spirit of God. It's the fruit of the holy
- 51:44spirit. It's the people who represent
- 51:46that Ministry. Is the people that represent
- 51:49that church, that movement and the character that they hold in
- 51:54The Obedience of the word of God that determines.
- 51:56If they are truly successful and truly have favor in the eyes of
- 51:59God, don't forget that. With all that being said, oh, we
- 52:04can go on, but we'll hold off until next week, so let's pray.
- 52:32Florida. It might be very well.
- 52:34True. That there are some in here who
- 52:35are enduring a trial, a Dark Night of the Soul, Lord there,
- 52:43maybe even some in here who who feel the absence of the love and
- 52:47the care of people in their lives.
- 52:52But Lord, you are able to stand by us in a way that it is
- 52:54recognizable. As Paul as Paul wrote about.
- 52:58But you're also able to surround us with the righteous that is
- 53:03nothing less, but the same love that you would show if you had
- 53:07manifested your goodness in our hearts, help us see, even the
- 53:12people in our own lives. Those who are truly righteous
- 53:16and love you that are in our lives.
- 53:18Help us see that this is an expression of your care for us.
- 53:24Lord help us at the same time. If we are suffering to not think
- 53:28that our lives are being wasted, even though our bodies might be
- 53:32decaying, even though our resources might be drained, even
- 53:36though their must there might be much pain.
- 53:38Oh God, it's never to sabotage our ministry but only to make it
- 53:43more effective and to enhance the mercy and the love in our
- 53:48own hearts for other people. Hello.
- 53:51We think about how suffering or great trials in life.
- 53:56Carries its own Temptation. That's the temptation of being
- 53:59so focused on ourselves that we fail to honor our own duties.
- 54:05And to fail to tap into the strength that you can give us as
- 54:10Paul experienced that he preached in the midst of much
- 54:12conflict. He's still preached.
- 54:14He still served the church. Help us to know that strength to
- 54:20still be in attendance, to still be, prayerful to still be
- 54:24faithful to our Ministries, even though we are enduring great
- 54:27trouble. And Lord we ask as all of us can
- 54:33relate to for reminder, that you are faithful in your leadership
- 54:39that at the right time, you will make the next step perfectly
- 54:42known and your perfect way. And all you asked us to do is
- 54:47remain faithful where we're at until that comes though.
- 54:50We are blessed by the word of the lord.
- 54:53We are blessed by David's life up to this point.
- 54:56We thank you for the provision of this story and the
- 55:00Application, it carries for our lives.
- 55:02We give you glory tonight. In Jesus name, we pray.
- 55:06Amen.
