- 0:00Speaker 1: We'll be right back.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst.
- 0:24Speaker 3: We are so.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Excited about our first show, NBC Sports Now Peacock.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Paul, tell them about the show.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Pearl, great to have you back. A lot of people
- 0:32Speaker 1: said this would never happen. A lot of people said
- 0:34Speaker 1: this should never happen. DP gave us our show. We're
- 0:36Speaker 1: right down the hall.
- 0:37Speaker 4: It's great.
- 0:38Speaker 1: An hour every day, chopping it up. College football, pro football, PCA.
- 0:42Speaker 1: You know I'm getting that in. A lot to hit to.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But you and I, we've been doing this forever. We've
- 0:46Speaker 1: known you from the Dan Patrick Show days. Good to
- 0:48Speaker 1: have you back. You know, I always chop it up.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We're always texting.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 2: So I left this show, Dan Patrick Show, at the
- 0:53Speaker 2: end of 21. And we texted pretty much every day
- 0:56Speaker 2: in between. We're old friends and we're not an embrace
- 1:00Speaker 2: debate type. Like we like to argue about things.
- 1:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 3: But we keep it friendly.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Keep it friendly. Warm takes coming up. But you and I,
- 1:06Speaker 1: they kind of want to do that odd couple thing
- 1:08Speaker 1: on TV. And you are from just to give people
- 1:11Speaker 1: the background. Lower Marion, Pennsylvania, kind of a bougie neighborhood.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Home of?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant, you went to high school.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Kobe Bryant's high school.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Then you went to Dartmouth.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:20Speaker 1: JV on the basketball team, former athlete.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Well, I think that's a stretch, but you're a former
- 1:24Speaker 3: athlete as well.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I was a two-time varsity archer, and where you stand motionless,
- 1:29Speaker 1: but you know.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Is that a thing?
- 1:31Speaker 1: It is. Southern Illinois University State School, five and a
- 1:34Speaker 1: half years. So that means I'm smarter than you. I
- 1:36Speaker 1: was in college for a longer time.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I kind of view things from an analytical point
- 1:40Speaker 2: of view, or at least try to.
- 1:41Speaker 3: You might call me a sports nerd. Paul, you're more
- 1:43Speaker 3: of an everyman. Is that what we're going for?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Man of the people, C's get degrees type guy.
- 1:47Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Well, you're going to get a lot of that on
- 1:50Speaker 2: Not So Fast. It's very similar. The DNA of the
- 1:52Speaker 2: Dan Patrick Show is what we have. Chemistry and fun.
- 1:55Speaker 1: The great thing is Dan is right down the hall.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So if something happens on the Dan Patrick Show, we're
- 1:59Speaker 1: going to call to the pen. Just wave Dan down.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Hopefully call the pen because things are going well and
- 2:05Speaker 2: not because we need. rescuing but of course i'm not
- 2:08Speaker 2: the only person who is back back in the dp
- 2:11Speaker 2: show man cave aaron donald returned to the rams officially
- 2:15Speaker 2: returned on sunday 20 million dollars for this year up
- 2:18Speaker 2: to 30 million dollars with bonuses paul what was your
- 2:20Speaker 2: reaction when you saw donald was official well they ran.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I know it wasn't a surprise but all month i've
- 2:25Speaker 1: been thinking this is like uh It's like Warren Buffett
- 2:27Speaker 1: winning the Powerball. The Rams didn't even need it. They
- 2:29Speaker 1: got Trent McDuffie in the offseason. They get Miles Garrett
- 2:32Speaker 1: in the offseason. Then this guy, he just turned 35,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Aaron Donald. And I don't look at him as old.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I look at him as rested and ready. And he's
- 2:40Speaker 1: probably sitting there at home going, I'm in the drop-off
- 2:42Speaker 1: line with my kids and I could bench 450 pounds.
- 2:44Speaker 1: What am I doing here?
- 2:46Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. I like that. He's not old. He's rested.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I would have used that for myself.
- 2:51Speaker 2: But, you know, everybody's reacting the same way to this.
- 2:54Speaker 2: The Rams moved up to plus 500 as Super Bowl favorites.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Everyone just assumes this is going to work. Paul, I'm
- 3:01Speaker 2: going to say not so fast.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Are you poo-pooing?
- 3:02Speaker 1: Are you throwing off the first not so fast?
- 3:04Speaker 3: I'm going with the first not so fast.
- 3:06Speaker 1: All right, checking that.
- 3:07Speaker 3: My problem with the Rams is... It's obvious. Age and
- 3:10Speaker 3: they're thin at some positions.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Okay.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Donald is 35.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Quarterback Matthew Stafford is 38. Devontae Adam is 33 at
- 3:17Speaker 2: wide receiver.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Thin on the O-line. Thin at receiver.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Everyone is so excited right now, but I think this
- 3:23Speaker 2: is more emotion than logic.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But they scored 500 points last year. If they had
- 3:26Speaker 1: just a little bit more defense, they would have been
- 3:28Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl. They were almost in the Super
- 3:29Speaker 1: Bowl anyway. But now with McDuffie, who doesn't get enough
- 3:33Speaker 1: credit for being a great defensive back, My only concern
- 3:35Speaker 1: would be Matthew Stafford staying healthy. Stetson Bennett is a backup.
- 3:39Speaker 1: He's almost 30 years old. He's not fantastic. But you've
- 3:42Speaker 1: got Puka Nakua. If he doesn't get in trouble off
- 3:44Speaker 1: the field, he's fantastic. I can't see a way other
- 3:48Speaker 1: than health. that this team isn't there.
- 3:50Speaker 6: At the end.
- 3:50Speaker 1: It's hard to picture.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Well, here's my issue.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It's really a bigger NFL topic. Is there ever really
- 3:55Speaker 2: a team to beat in the NFL?
- 3:56Speaker 3: Maybe the Chiefs a few years ago. Chiefs.
- 3:58Speaker 2: But it's so wide open. You need to get through
- 4:00Speaker 2: 17 regular season games. I need to get through the playoffs. Listen,
- 4:03Speaker 2: the Rams were awesome last year and Seattle took them down.
- 4:06Speaker 2: How do you know there's not going to be another
- 4:07Speaker 2: Seattle this year?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Well, yeah, you can't say there's nobody else going to
- 4:10Speaker 1: challenge them. Or I saw a show earlier today said
- 4:12Speaker 1: they could go 16-0, 17-0. Let's pump the brakes a
- 4:15Speaker 1: little bit on that. But again, Aaron Donald, This guy
- 4:19Speaker 1: had a sack off in the Super Bowl. Rams plus 500,
- 4:22Speaker 1: Bills plus 1,000, Ravens, they're in that mix. Seahawks got
- 4:26Speaker 1: to be a little bit upset. But Aaron Donald, you
- 4:28Speaker 1: look at his career, he left a little bit early,
- 4:30Speaker 1: 32 years old. But if he doesn't get the pressure
- 4:33Speaker 1: on Joe Burrow in that Super Bowl, they're probably losing
- 4:35Speaker 1: that one. They're probably losing it. They only sack off
- 4:38Speaker 1: in Super Bowl.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I mean, listen.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I'm not going to question Aaron Donald. He's one of
- 4:40Speaker 2: the three best defensive linemen I've ever seen play.
- 4:43Speaker 3: He's incredible. But that plus 500 number makes me nervous.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Usually when a team is that heavy in the preseason,
- 4:49Speaker 2: it does not work out. So, yeah, I'm going to
- 4:51Speaker 2: say not so fast. All right, Paul, yesterday was cut-down
- 4:55Speaker 2: day in the NFL, and a lot of teams... kept
- 4:58Speaker 2: four quarterbacks, which is interesting. We'll get to that later.
- 5:00Speaker 2: What other stories stood out to you on Sunday in
- 5:03Speaker 2: the NFL?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Well, this is not getting a lot of pub because
- 5:05Speaker 1: it's not the prettiest story of all time, but Josh Jacobs,
- 5:07Speaker 1: the star running back of the Packers, is on the
- 5:08Speaker 1: commissioner's exempt list. Not the list you want to be
- 5:11Speaker 1: on because that list is infinite. It could be four weeks.
- 5:13Speaker 3: It could be eight weeks.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Remember Adrian Peterson back in the day? We're not going
- 5:17Speaker 1: to get too into the weeds on the details, but
- 5:19Speaker 1: the bigger picture is for Packer fans. It seems like
- 5:21Speaker 1: every year there's somebody missing. Christian Watson, the wide receiver.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Tucker Kraft last year. And Jordan Love, who is a
- 5:28Speaker 1: very good quarterback, but no one's calling a great quarterback,
- 5:31Speaker 1: seems to need all hands on deck. That'd be very
- 5:33Speaker 1: concerning in that division.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Ooh, I'm going to call Jordan Love close to great.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Close to great is fine.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Now, Josh Jacobs, very good running back.
- 5:41Speaker 2: 4.0 yards per carry last year. Paul, is that really
- 5:44Speaker 2: making that big a difference?
- 5:45Speaker 1: Oh, you need him in the hardcore days in December
- 5:48Speaker 1: when it's snowing out. He is not Jameer Gibbs. He
- 5:50Speaker 1: doesn't have that breakaway speed. He's not Bijan Robinson. But that,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you don't know when he's coming back. And that not knowing,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I think, is a big problem for the Packers.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, if they stay healthy, I think
- 5:59Speaker 2: they're going to be a very good team. People are
- 6:01Speaker 2: dismissing them. And Josh Jacobs will probably be back. Last
- 6:04Speaker 2: few players on Commissioner's list, about six to seven weeks.
- 6:06Speaker 2: So we'll probably see him again.
- 6:08Speaker 1: A lot of other things happened. Will Levis got cut.
- 6:10Speaker 3: J.J.
- 6:10Speaker 1: McCarthy staying. A little bit of a surprise there.
- 6:12Speaker 3: For now.
- 6:12Speaker 6: For now.
- 6:13Speaker 3: For now.
- 6:13Speaker 1: All right, let's get to some college football. There's college
- 6:15Speaker 1: football week zero yesterday. And, you know, week zero is
- 6:19Speaker 1: not always the greatest thing in the world. It's a
- 6:20Speaker 1: mishmash of games. And You're going to watch Virginia versus
- 6:23Speaker 1: NC State. You might not watch that in Week 5.
- 6:25Speaker 1: But North Carolina TCU in Dublin, 12 o'clock game, everybody watched.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Not pretty, bit of a slugfest. Bill Belichick pulled it out,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and they really do have a good defensive line down there.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And I think that's what's interesting, that their defense is
- 6:36Speaker 1: much improved. And Belichick is a defensive first guy. Not
- 6:40Speaker 1: the greatest game of all time, and I know you're
- 6:41Speaker 1: getting ready to just pour cold water all over this one.
- 6:45Speaker 1: But a comparison last year, which had tons of expectations
- 6:48Speaker 1: and a disappointing game versus TCU, Lesser expectations and a win.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Here's a little bit of Bill Belichick, out of his mind,
- 6:54Speaker 1: thrilled after the victory.
- 6:57Speaker 7: You're always trying to strive for perfection. You never achieve it,
- 7:01Speaker 7: but you try to get as close as you can.
- 7:02Speaker 7: You try to be excellent. You try to be really
- 7:05Speaker 7: consistently good. That's what we try to do individually. That's
- 7:08Speaker 7: what we try to do as a team. There's plenty
- 7:11Speaker 7: of times when we fell short of that, but certainly
- 7:15Speaker 7: we've made progress. I feel like this is a good
- 7:18Speaker 7: step for us.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Wow, no jet lag on that guy. I'm ready to
- 7:22Speaker 1: run through a wall for him. But, you know, everything
- 7:25Speaker 1: cooled down. Remember Dion a couple years ago, and then
- 7:28Speaker 1: it cooled off a little bit. Last year it was
- 7:30Speaker 1: all Belichick all the time, and it cooled off a
- 7:31Speaker 1: little bit. They've got a tough schedule, but it sets
- 7:33Speaker 1: up really nice for them. You know what's coming up, right?
- 7:35Speaker 3: Oh, they've got a couple. They've got a gimme and
- 7:37Speaker 3: then Clemson down the road.
- 7:39Speaker 1: If they can get past Clemson, you set up early October,
- 7:42Speaker 1: Notre Dame at home. Everybody will be back in if
- 7:45Speaker 1: they're undefeated.
- 7:46Speaker 3: I'm going to go to my second pick. Not so fast.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Way too early.
- 7:50Speaker 3: It's kind of like a Heisman pose. Not so fast.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Come on.
- 7:54Speaker 2: They beat TCU 15-10 in the pouring rain in Dublin.
- 7:57Speaker 2: TCU had been practicing in 105 degree weather. They had
- 8:00Speaker 2: no idea what was going on over there. They didn't
- 8:02Speaker 2: want to be there. They had their own locker room issues.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And Belichick wins 15-10. Yes, their defensive line finally sort
- 8:08Speaker 2: of woke up after the first half because they were.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Getting run all over.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Quarterback Billy Edwards was fine, but the hype is back
- 8:17Speaker 2: because last.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Year there was so much hype.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Remember, North Carolina scored on their first drive against TCU.
- 8:21Speaker 3: They got blown out.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Everybody was in the building.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Everyone's back.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I think it's been a little slower after that win,
- 8:26Speaker 2: but people are looking at a 15-10 win, which in
- 8:29Speaker 2: a way they probably should have lost. TCU had some
- 8:32Speaker 2: fourth down opportunities that they blew. had so many mistakes,
- 8:35Speaker 2: so many penalties. I'm definitely not so fasting this one.
- 8:38Speaker 1: But I got to say, it's good for college football
- 8:40Speaker 1: to have Bill Belichick and his team relevant because it
- 8:42Speaker 1: went away so fast. And you need these characters in
- 8:44Speaker 1: college football. Like Lane Kiffin, he might be a villain,
- 8:46Speaker 1: but you need these villains.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Wait, so does that mean you're rooting for Bill Belichick
- 8:50Speaker 2: or you're just rooting for the story?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Rooting for the story. Bill and I aren't that close.
- 8:54Speaker 1: But I like the fact that Bill Belichick might set
- 8:56Speaker 1: up a situation where if they could be undefeated versus
- 8:59Speaker 1: Notre Dame, that's fantastic. By the way, bonus coverage. Love
- 9:01Speaker 1: the Ronald Curry-era UNC uniforms they wore in Dublin the
- 9:04Speaker 1: other days. Those are gorgeous.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I see, again, the hype. The hype around Bill Belichick.
- 9:09Speaker 2: You know who is going to have something to say
- 9:10Speaker 2: about the uniforms, of course? Bill's girlfriend, Jordan Hudson. And
- 9:13Speaker 2: maybe that's why it seems like I'm rooting against UNC.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Way too soon for that one. A little bit more
- 9:17Speaker 1: college football. USC the other day, in front of a
- 9:20Speaker 1: sparse crowd at the Coliseum, took care of San Jose State.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Not a great second half. Great first half. Their quarterback
- 9:26Speaker 1: was great. A lot of good young players on the team,
- 9:29Speaker 1: but That's a team where we're going to talk about
- 9:31Speaker 1: the people in the stands, all of them, both of them, later.
- 9:34Speaker 1: But USC needs to get back in the mix. They've
- 9:36Speaker 1: had one 10-plus win season in the past eight years,
- 9:39Speaker 1: and that's not very USC-ish. They've got this freshman. You've
- 9:43Speaker 1: got to watch this kid. Check this out. I love
- 9:45Speaker 1: this guy. Luke Waffle, the Waffle House, as I call him,
- 9:47Speaker 1: he is a monster. He looks like a— Wow, look
- 9:51Speaker 1: at that monster, number 94.
- 9:53Speaker 3: A little J.J. Watt or Buddy J.J. Watt, maybe?
- 9:55Speaker 1: It's very Watt-ish.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the whole freshman class is insane at USC.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Hard to tell against San Jose State. They completely outclassed them.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I was thrilled about Jaden Maiava, quarterback. I'm not going
- 10:07Speaker 2: to say Heisman yet.
- 10:08Speaker 3: You can't go Heisman after week zero.
- 10:09Speaker 4: But you're calling.
- 10:10Speaker 1: That's your guy, Maiava.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Oh, I'm so into him.
- 10:12Speaker 2: There's tons of quarterbacks that are going to next year's draft.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I mean, Jaden Maiava is definitely one of them. You
- 10:18Speaker 2: got the star freshman tight end. You got a young receiver.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Now listen, in 90 degree heat, beating San Jose State's
- 10:24Speaker 2: one thing. Are they going to travel in the Big Ten?
- 10:26Speaker 2: Tough schedule for USC. But you said something interesting.
- 10:29Speaker 3: You know, they need this. Lincoln Riley needs a big season.
- 10:32Speaker 1: And they need buzz.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Yeah, they need buzz. I'm not going to say Lincoln
- 10:35Speaker 3: Riley's in trouble.
- 10:36Speaker 2: But it feels like USC definitely at least needs a challenge.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I'm not saying they have to be national title contenders.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I really think they might need to make the playoffs, Paul,
- 10:45Speaker 2: or they're going to get sick of Lincoln Riley.
- 10:47Speaker 3: But that was a great start.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Luke Waffle looked like Jefferson at Fast Times at Ridgemont
- 10:50Speaker 1: High out there yesterday.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Absolutely. Absolutely. All right.
- 10:53Speaker 2: We're going to have plenty of college football on the show,
- 10:55Speaker 2: including Yogi Roth from NBC Sports.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Awesome college football analyst. We're talking a little more week
- 11:01Speaker 3: zero action, but let's look big picture. Who's going to
- 11:04Speaker 3: be this year's Indiana? We'll discuss next. Not so fast.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Welcome to the show. Crush that. That was amazingly good.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Your hair looks pretty good.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Which is, I know, your priority.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Of course.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Pearl, check this out. A little midday pick-me-up for you.
- 11:27Speaker 1: This is a flyover during a South African soccer match.
- 11:31Speaker 4: What?
- 11:31Speaker 1: That seems a little close.
- 11:34Speaker 3: You think? It's one of the most incredible things I've
- 11:36Speaker 3: ever seen.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Can someone in the control tower tell Maverick and Goose
- 11:38Speaker 1: to pump the brakes a little bit?
- 11:39Speaker 4: Because that is.
- 11:41Speaker 1: That is snug.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I would have had a full panic attack if I
- 11:44Speaker 2: was in the crowd. You know at Auburn when the
- 11:46Speaker 2: hawk goes around?
- 11:47Speaker 3: Oh, I love that.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I'm always like, everyone run, there's a hawk on the loose.
- 11:51Speaker 2: That plane would have sent me into a panic. I
- 11:52Speaker 2: would have said, everyone get out of here.
- 11:54Speaker 1: War Eagle. All right, back on Not So Fast.
- 11:56Speaker 3: I'm Paps.
- 11:56Speaker 1: He's Pearl up right here on NBC Sports Now. We're
- 11:58Speaker 1: doing a little thing every day here called Warm Takes. Now,
- 12:02Speaker 1: you might be used to hot takes. We don't want
- 12:04Speaker 1: any of you kids out there getting burned. Stay away
- 12:06Speaker 1: from the stove. These are called Warm Takes. Waving you in,
- 12:08Speaker 1: nice and cuddly. I'll go first, you're second.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Saw an article the other day. Who is this year's
- 12:14Speaker 1: Indiana of college football? Who's the next surprise team? So
- 12:17Speaker 1: I got it for you. The next Indiana is nobody.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Let's not move on from what Indiana did. Let's take
- 12:22Speaker 1: a beat here before the 2026 season and look what
- 12:25Speaker 1: Indiana football did last year. They were good in 2024. Right.
- 12:28Speaker 1: And they're like, oh, cute story. In 2025, 16-0 with
- 12:31Speaker 1: Kurt Cignetti. They get the Heisman Trophy with Mendoza. They
- 12:35Speaker 1: run through the playoffs. They really bury everybody. And they
- 12:38Speaker 1: do it against the heavyweights, Ohio State, Penn State, everybody.
- 12:41Speaker 1: What Indiana football did is galactic. It's an all-time college
- 12:45Speaker 1: football story.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Pearl, do you want me.
- 12:47Speaker 1: 10 win seasons Indiana football had before Curt Cignetti got there?
- 12:51Speaker 3: I'm guessing not a lot.
- 12:52Speaker 1: None. None 10 win seasons. None 10 win seasons. So
- 12:56Speaker 1: before we move on and try to find the next Indiana,
- 12:59Speaker 1: let's look back and say that was one of the
- 13:00Speaker 1: more special college football seasons of all time.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I have an option. Could Indiana be the next Indiana?
- 13:08Speaker 1: I'm giving that to you. Okay, because no one's excited.
- 13:10Speaker 3: About this team.
- 13:10Speaker 2: They're number six in the polls, and I don't think
- 13:13Speaker 2: anyone's talking about them repeating. I think it's hard to
- 13:15Speaker 2: imagine them repeating, considering they never won before.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:17Speaker 1: This goes back to the old Indiana sentiment. Remember back
- 13:20Speaker 1: in the day when they'd have Antoine Randall-El, and you'd
- 13:22Speaker 1: be like, oh, they're six and five, and they made
- 13:24Speaker 1: the Blue Bonnet Bowl. This is not those days anymore.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Kurt Cignetti is going to make them consistently good.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, in the NIL era, though, you're going
- 13:31Speaker 2: to see teams like this. I'm not sure I totally
- 13:34Speaker 2: agree that there's not going to be a next Indiana.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I don't know if the basketball schools, I don't know
- 13:38Speaker 2: if Kentucky can do it, but I think we're going
- 13:39Speaker 2: to see some weird results. All right, I'm going to
- 13:41Speaker 2: turn to the NFL. Yesterday was cut-down day, and five
- 13:44Speaker 2: teams kept four quarterbacks on their roster. Well, really, four
- 13:47Speaker 2: and a half because Cleveland snuck Dylan Gabriel onto the IR.
- 13:51Speaker 2: But this is a really interesting move to me. That
- 13:52Speaker 2: means some sixth linebacker out there is not getting a job.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I love it when teams do this. Because quarterback development
- 13:58Speaker 2: is the most important thing in the entire NFL. The
- 14:02Speaker 2: only way to be consistent is to have great quarterback play.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And there's a couple teams that have done this over
- 14:06Speaker 2: the years. The New England Patriots. Remember when they kept
- 14:09Speaker 2: four quarterbacks in the year 2000, Paul? You know who
- 14:11Speaker 2: the fourth quarterback was?
- 14:13Speaker 4: Don't.
- 14:14Speaker 3: His name was Tom Brady.
- 14:15Speaker 2: He went on to win multiple Super Bowls.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Heard of him.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah, he was behind Rohan Davey, I believe.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Oh, LSU.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Eagles always keep a bunch of quarterbacks.
- 14:22Speaker 2: The year they won their first Super Bowl in 2017,
- 14:25Speaker 2: they had three quarterbacks play.
- 14:26Speaker 3: You need depth, but it's not just about depth.
- 14:28Speaker 2: There are some really interesting players the teams want to
- 14:31Speaker 2: hold on to in Cleveland.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Talon Green out of Arkansas. He's 6'6.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I saw this dude at the Senior Bowl. He is
- 14:38Speaker 2: very talented. I just think he hasn't really learned how
- 14:41Speaker 2: to play the position yet. You've got Cole Payton in Philly.
- 14:44Speaker 2: You've got Jack Strand in Atlanta. A big kid out
- 14:47Speaker 2: of Minnesota State played really well. I love being aggressive
- 14:51Speaker 2: at quarterback and sort of stockpiling these players.
- 14:54Speaker 1: What are the old cliches? If you have two quarterbacks,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you have Dunn. If you have three quarterbacks, you have Depth.
- 14:58Speaker 1: What do you have if you have four quarterbacks? I'm
- 15:00Speaker 1: not sure what the hell we have there. But here's
- 15:02Speaker 1: the thing. Except for your Eagles, I would say any
- 15:04Speaker 1: of those teams on that list that have four quarterbacks,
- 15:06Speaker 1: they don't have a quarterback of the future. If you
- 15:09Speaker 1: look at the Steelers, they're in kind of a good
- 15:11Speaker 1: position because they know that Rodgers is going in a
- 15:13Speaker 1: little bit. But Drew Aller, do they want him? Will Howard,
- 15:16Speaker 1: do they want him? That's a good position to be in.
- 15:19Speaker 1: But then I look at the Viking situation. Kyler Murray
- 15:23Speaker 1: is a test drive.
- 15:24Speaker 3: J.J.
- 15:24Speaker 1: McCarthy is a move on from pretty soon if they
- 15:26Speaker 1: find someone. You know, the Steelers, I think, are in
- 15:29Speaker 1: better shape than others. But when you have four quarterbacks,
- 15:31Speaker 1: I think you're in the perpetual development mode.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Wow. Let's see if J.J. McCarthy's on the Vikings roster
- 15:36Speaker 3: by the end of the preseason.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I was surprised he was yesterday.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Yeah, but they could make a trade.
- 15:41Speaker 2: I think Carson Wentz is really the natural backup there
- 15:43Speaker 2: to Kyler Murray.
- 15:44Speaker 3: All right, Paul, you're up.
- 15:45Speaker 1: All right, here's my next warm take, and this goes
- 15:46Speaker 1: back to college football. All right, we have a rule
- 15:49Speaker 1: on Not So Fast, and it's two rules.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Here we go. Here it is.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Never say before a game, they have no chance, and
- 15:54Speaker 1: never say this one's over. Especially in college football. If you,
- 15:58Speaker 1: like me, were watching William & Mary vs. Villanova the
- 16:01Speaker 1: other night, and William & Mary is down 10 with
- 16:04Speaker 1: 57 seconds left, you don't turn the channel. You stick
- 16:06Speaker 1: with it. Bill & Mary found a way to pull
- 16:09Speaker 1: out this comeback against Villanova with 57 seconds left. They
- 16:12Speaker 1: scored 13 points in 57 seconds. It doesn't seem mathematically possible.
- 16:16Speaker 1: So don't be one of those guys who say they
- 16:18Speaker 1: have no chance or this game's over because you're going
- 16:22Speaker 1: to get burned. I go back to Appalachian State. The
- 16:24Speaker 1: home of, they have no chance, beating Michigan over a
- 16:27Speaker 1: decade ago.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I mean, that really goes back to my early days
- 16:30Speaker 2: at the Dan Patrick Show. Dan's always been held up
- 16:32Speaker 2: on that. I don't want to hear no chance or
- 16:35Speaker 2: it's a done deal because it never is.
- 16:36Speaker 3: It's sports. It's totally crazy.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Yeah, by the way, anyone who doesn't know, Paul actually
- 16:41Speaker 2: does watch these crazy games. Not that it's crazy to
- 16:43Speaker 2: watch William & Mary Villanova, but it's crazy to text
- 16:46Speaker 2: me at 1 a.m. because some school that I've never
- 16:49Speaker 2: heard of is in a close game.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I'm glad you tuned in. I'm glad you tuned in.
- 16:52Speaker 2: All right, my next warm take is about Fernando Mendoza,
- 16:54Speaker 2: the number one overall pick. As of right now, we
- 16:57Speaker 2: don't know who the Raiders starter is. It's going to
- 16:59Speaker 2: be Kirk Cousins. In fact, Mendoza could be third string.
- 17:02Speaker 2: He had a rough preseason. Under 50% completion. Got hit
- 17:07Speaker 2: more than any quarterback in the entire NFL in the preseason.
- 17:10Speaker 3: But Paul... If you're going to bury him, I'm going
- 17:12Speaker 3: to say not so fast.
- 17:14Speaker 1: That's your third not so fast.
- 17:15Speaker 3: That's my third not so fast.
- 17:17Speaker 2: The Raiders O-line, their second string O-line that was protecting Mendoza,
- 17:20Speaker 2: did not protect him. He had no time whatsoever. The
- 17:24Speaker 2: Raiders starting line was pretty good for Kirk Cousins. So
- 17:27Speaker 2: you cannot read too much into preseason. I've made this
- 17:30Speaker 2: mistake so many times in the past. Remember when I
- 17:32Speaker 2: told you Kenny Pickett was going to be in the
- 17:33Speaker 2: Hall of Fame because he was lighting up the.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Preseason for the Steelers?
- 17:36Speaker 8: Sure.
- 17:36Speaker 3: The opposite is true. If you struggle a little.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Bit, you have no idea what the coaches were trying
- 17:40Speaker 2: to do. They're probably going to want to see Fernando
- 17:42Speaker 2: Mendoza under some live fire. I've seen a lot of
- 17:45Speaker 2: people say, ooh, maybe they made a mistake at number
- 17:48Speaker 2: one overall. Do not say that. He made a lot
- 17:50Speaker 2: of great plays in the preseason. Clearly can see the field,
- 17:53Speaker 2: has great tools. I don't know when he's going to start.
- 17:56Speaker 2: I would guess midseason, Paul, but I'm not worried at all.
- 17:59Speaker 3: About Fernando Mendoza.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I really like the Raiders' plan, if it is
- 18:03Speaker 1: the plan. They haven't announced who the starter is yet,
- 18:04Speaker 1: but I assume it's going to be, as Dan Patrick
- 18:06Speaker 1: said on the show, it better not be Fernando Mendoza.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It better be Cousins. You bring Cousins in with the
- 18:11Speaker 1: thought of starting him. It goes back to, remember Jared
- 18:14Speaker 1: Goff years ago and Case Keenum? They let Goff sit.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I think this is a great plan by the Raiders.
- 18:18Speaker 1: If they say to Mendoza, We're not interested in you starting.
- 18:22Speaker 1: It's a little apples and oranges back in the Alex Smith,
- 18:24Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes days. Mahomes sit 90% of that season. But
- 18:28Speaker 1: let's be smart. Let's let Kirk Cousins take the hits,
- 18:30Speaker 1: especially there's like a four-game stretch in October where the
- 18:33Speaker 1: Raiders have some tough games. My prediction for this, I'm
- 18:36Speaker 1: calling my shot here on Not So Fast. By the way,
- 18:38Speaker 1: you're up 3-0 Not So Fast on me. I will
- 18:40Speaker 1: go week eight at the Jets. That is Fernando Mendoza's
- 18:44Speaker 1: first start. My guess is the Raiders will be under. 500,
- 18:47Speaker 1: well under. 500 at that point. You put them against
- 18:50Speaker 1: the Jets, who are not known for picking off people
- 18:53Speaker 1: a lot, and pretty decent defense, but that's your spot.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Mendoza starts, gets it for the rest of the season,
- 18:58Speaker 1: unless something good happens, like... Kirk Cousins is leading you
- 19:02Speaker 1: to an above 500 record.
- 19:03Speaker 3: You know what worries me? After that Jets game, which
- 19:06Speaker 3: I like that. Jets defense is not terrible, by the way.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Not terrible.
- 19:08Speaker 3: You got Seattle and Denver sitting there.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Can you start them against the Jets and then put
- 19:12Speaker 2: Cousins back in to be the sacrificial lamb for those games?
- 19:15Speaker 3: That's not easy, Paul.
- 19:16Speaker 1: That's a fair point. I like where you're going there.
- 19:18Speaker 1: All right, let's play a little game here. We like
- 19:19Speaker 1: to play games on Not So Fast.
- 19:21Speaker 4: I'm Pabst.
- 19:21Speaker 1: He's Perloff.
- 19:22Speaker 6: Here we go.
- 19:22Speaker 1: This game is called Who Said It? That silhouette is
- 19:25Speaker 1: not Robert Redford. It is some football person, from what
- 19:28Speaker 1: I'm told in my ear, who said this. This kid's
- 19:32Speaker 1: not going to fail, obviously. I put my job on
- 19:34Speaker 1: that one. But he's not going to fail. He's special.
- 19:37Speaker 8: Ooh.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Well.
- 19:38Speaker 1: My job on the line.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Maybe off my warm take, this was Raiders coach Clint
- 19:44Speaker 2: Kubiak talking about Fernando Mendoza.
- 19:47Speaker 1: I'm going to go, I'm going to go, man, I
- 19:50Speaker 1: don't know on this one. I'm going to say Bill
- 19:51Speaker 1: Belichick talking about his new starting quarterback, but I don't
- 19:54Speaker 1: feel good about that pick.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Oh, okay, okay. Here we go.
- 19:56Speaker 1: This kid's not going to fail.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Obviously, I put my job on that one.
- 20:04Speaker 4: But he's not going to fail. He's special.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Robert Sala, Mr. Buff, great skull, very happy about his quarterback,
- 20:12Speaker 1: Cam Ward.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Paul, I watched him in preseason. I am a big
- 20:17Speaker 2: Cam Ward supporter. He did not play well at all.
- 20:20Speaker 2: So hopefully Sala is right, though, because Cam Ward has
- 20:22Speaker 2: a lot of talent, but it was not coming together
- 20:24Speaker 2: in the preseason.
- 20:24Speaker 1: You know, what else is the head coach going to say?
- 20:26Speaker 1: You know, Cam Ward, I don't feel good about this
- 20:28Speaker 1: season at all, but I've inherited this kid, and he's
- 20:31Speaker 1: under contract. Robert Sala's got to be positive. All right,
- 20:33Speaker 1: let's go one more round. We're both 0 for 2 there.
- 20:35Speaker 1: This is round two.
- 20:36Speaker 6: Who said it?
- 20:37Speaker 1: Here's a quote. Had a Pro Bowl here, had a
- 20:40Speaker 1: good amount of accolades. So regardless of the reaction, I
- 20:43Speaker 1: love the city. We have a home out here, we
- 20:45Speaker 1: still have a house and whatnot.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Oh, okay, so that's somebody who returned to their city.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I'd like to go first. I'm going to go Odell
- 20:53Speaker 1: Beckham with the Giants. He still has a house there.
- 20:56Speaker 1: He seems like a sensible man, homeowner.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Ooh, I don't know.
- 21:00Speaker 2: I'm going to go Eagles backup quarterback Andy Dalton because
- 21:02Speaker 2: they played the Bengals in week three of the preseason.
- 21:04Speaker 1: God, that's a deep cut.
- 21:04Speaker 3: But I think it might have been in Philly. I
- 21:06Speaker 3: have to check that.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Let's check it out.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Had a Pro Bowl here. Like, had a good amount
- 21:13Speaker 5: of accolades. So, regardless of the reaction, like, I mean,
- 21:18Speaker 5: I had I love the city. We have a home
- 21:23Speaker 5: out here.
- 21:24Speaker 6: We still have our house and whatnot.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Keeping the house in Miami, smart move by him. Smart
- 21:29Speaker 1: move by him.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Tua played a little better against his former team, but
- 21:33Speaker 2: I'm really worried about that situation. As we sit here today,
- 21:36Speaker 2: we don't have a Falcons starter. I think there are
- 21:38Speaker 2: some Falcons fans who are going to wish that he
- 21:40Speaker 2: was back in Miami.
- 21:41Speaker 3: I don't think he's going to get the job done.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Do you think it's a done deal? The other day
- 21:43Speaker 1: you were saying you think it's Pennix until.
- 21:45Speaker 2: You know, Pettis didn't start his final preseason game, so
- 21:48Speaker 2: it depends on health.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I always thought that was a good thing if you're
- 21:50Speaker 1: not starting your final.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Well, not when you're coming off another major injury. So
- 21:54Speaker 2: that's a deal with Michael Pettis.
- 21:55Speaker 1: All right, stick around. Coming up, Yogi Roth of NBC
- 21:57Speaker 1: Sports to get you all set up for the college
- 21:59Speaker 1: football season. Paffs and Perloff, stick around. Not so fast.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Over two.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Yeah, we should have gotten two up. I remembered. I
- 22:07Speaker 3: saw that. I think I heard that quote.
- 22:08Speaker 1: That should have been Odell Beckham. That was a good call.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Wrong, but a good call. No, I'll give you half
- 22:13Speaker 3: a point. Oh, thanks. Welcome back.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Not so fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst. Now, Paul,
- 22:19Speaker 2: I understand we're not the only new show on NBC
- 22:22Speaker 2: Sports Now.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Our boy John Fanta, Fanta in 60 tonight, 6 p.m. Eastern,
- 22:26Speaker 1: right here, right here on NBC. Can't wait for Fanta.
- 22:29Speaker 3: I love John Fanta. I also love our upcoming guest.
- 22:33Speaker 2: He's one of the smartest minds in college football, former
- 22:36Speaker 2: Pitt receiver, former USC quarterback coach, Yogi Roth, who is
- 22:41Speaker 2: going to be calling Big Ten games for NBC.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Yogi, we are so excited. You're our new teammate. How
- 22:46Speaker 3: are you doing?
- 22:47Speaker 6: Hey, you know what? I'm just showering you guys with love.
- 22:50Speaker 9: I mean, I've been listening to you for a while,
- 22:53Speaker 9: and to see this show come out, to watch it
- 22:55Speaker 9: now in real person, to see that set behind you,
- 22:57Speaker 9: I mean, This is not like Dan's garage anymore.
- 22:59Speaker 6: I mean, you guys are killing it, man. Congratulations. Just
- 23:02Speaker 6: thrilled for you and all the work you put into
- 23:04Speaker 6: it and what you have now.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Thank you, brother. It's great to have you on this show.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I want to go back before we go forward and
- 23:08Speaker 1: look at the 2026 season. I was saying the other day,
- 23:11Speaker 1: I saw an article that said, who's the next Indiana
- 23:14Speaker 1: that come from nowhere team that does it? I don't
- 23:16Speaker 1: want to skip past what Indiana's done the past two years.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Winning the national title, 16-0, Mendoza gets the Heisman, Kurt Cignetti.
- 23:23Speaker 1: You remember the days. You're not that old, but you're
- 23:25Speaker 1: old enough to remember when Indiana winning six games was
- 23:27Speaker 1: a big deal. It was galactic what they did last year,
- 23:30Speaker 1: wasn't it?
- 23:32Speaker 9: It was beautiful on every front, and it's given everybody
- 23:35Speaker 9: hope and also given a lot of head coaches a
- 23:38Speaker 9: lot of stress because now you've got to win. If
- 23:39Speaker 9: they can do it in Indiana, why can't you do
- 23:41Speaker 9: it at insert school X, if you will? But to me,
- 23:44Speaker 9: so many core memories come up. I was at the
- 23:47Speaker 9: Heisman Trophy. And I've been covering the Heisman for probably
- 23:50Speaker 9: 15 years now. And Fernando wins it, of course. And
- 23:53Speaker 9: he walks into this room that's like the media room.
- 23:56Speaker 9: And he doesn't know it, but about 12, 15 of
- 23:58Speaker 9: his teammates, you know, at NIL, you're flying on a PJ.
- 24:01Speaker 9: You find your way to New York City. And they're
- 24:02Speaker 9: all kind of waiting for him there. And he walks in. And,
- 24:06Speaker 9: you know, the last time we were at like a
- 24:08Speaker 9: crazy house party was probably a while ago.
- 24:10Speaker 6: It felt like that because he rolls in. They surprise him.
- 24:13Speaker 9: They start mosh pitting, jumping up and down like only
- 24:15Speaker 9: bros can do in football, like a postgame celebration, if
- 24:18Speaker 9: you will. And it was just such an innocent but
- 24:21Speaker 9: amazing moment to watch that happen in real time. And
- 24:24Speaker 9: I've known Fernando since he was a two star recruit
- 24:26Speaker 9: coming out of Miami. He went to Cal and I
- 24:27Speaker 9: called a bunch of his games back in the day.
- 24:29Speaker 9: So to watch that arc and then you add Insignetti, who,
- 24:33Speaker 9: you know, Pittsburgh guy, you know, legendary Pittsburgh family coach
- 24:36Speaker 9: at Pitt back in the day as well.
- 24:38Speaker 6: To watch him do it the long road. I mean,
- 24:40Speaker 6: it's kind of like you guys. You've been doing this,
- 24:42Speaker 6: you know, your careers forever.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yeah, we're just like Fernando Mendoza. We're just like Chris Cignetti. Exactly.
- 24:47Speaker 6: You're Cignetti. Show of the year.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Crown him. Let's go.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I like that comparison.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Yogi, you have a podcast, The Why Option, with Todd Blackledge,
- 24:55Speaker 2: and you did a fall camp tour.
- 24:56Speaker 3: I know you stopped by Indiana this fall. Any chance
- 25:00Speaker 3: that they can repeat?
- 25:01Speaker 2: I mean, they hadn't won a title ever, and now
- 25:04Speaker 2: two in 100 years would be amazing.
- 25:06Speaker 9: Yeah, well, I asked Todd that question. That was kind
- 25:08Speaker 9: of our first segment earlier this week or last week.
- 25:10Speaker 9: I said, hey, what's going to stop him? And his
- 25:13Speaker 9: line was great. He goes, definitely not themselves. And I
- 25:15Speaker 9: think that's Indiana. They're as well coached of an outfit
- 25:18Speaker 9: in any sport that we have seen. I think Kurt
- 25:21Speaker 9: Cignetti is the modern day Bill Walsh and studying Bill
- 25:23Speaker 9: Walsh all summer for a bunch of random reasons. But
- 25:27Speaker 9: he's got a conviction. to him and his approach. You
- 25:30Speaker 9: go to practice, you don't hear music. Not many places
- 25:32Speaker 9: in America that happens. You go to practice, you see ones-on-ones,
- 25:36Speaker 9: best versus best. You go to practice and you look
- 25:38Speaker 9: at the offensive line and you think after the run
- 25:40Speaker 9: you just referenced, it's four 50-year seniors and one third-year
- 25:45Speaker 9: player who started a bunch of games.
- 25:46Speaker 6: I mean, they're not going to take a drop.
- 25:48Speaker 9: There is not a reason that we should not be
- 25:50Speaker 9: talking about Indiana repeating. They're going to be in the mix.
- 25:53Speaker 9: They should be a playoff team again. It's not going
- 25:55Speaker 9: to be easy in the Big Ten, as you know.
- 25:57Speaker 9: But this team hasn't fallen off, and as Cignetti always says,
- 26:00Speaker 9: he's hunting for complacency. From what I saw last week,
- 26:03Speaker 9: no complacency in Bloomington right now.
- 26:05Speaker 1: All right, Yogi, let's stay in the same state. I
- 26:07Speaker 1: want to get to the Big Ten in a second,
- 26:08Speaker 1: but Notre Dame football, they have a friendly, comfortable schedule. Wisconsin,
- 26:14Speaker 1: Michigan State, but then Miami later in the season. CJ Carr,
- 26:16Speaker 1: everybody loves him. I want to ask you about him.
- 26:18Speaker 1: But they lost a couple running backs last year, high-end
- 26:21Speaker 1: running backs. One thing I'm concerned about, other people are
- 26:24Speaker 1: concerned about, if Notre Dame has this breezy schedule, will
- 26:27Speaker 1: they be prepared for the playoffs?
- 26:29Speaker 9: Yeah, that's a fair question. I'll say this, having visited
- 26:32Speaker 9: them as well this offseason. For whatever it's worth, from
- 26:35Speaker 9: my eyes, them and Oregon were the two best teams
- 26:39Speaker 9: that I saw. And then right below that's Indiana, Ohio State.
- 26:42Speaker 9: You kind of make an argument for either one of those.
- 26:45Speaker 9: Not a lot separating, but enough for me to at
- 26:47Speaker 9: least make that statement. When I look at Notre Dame,
- 26:50Speaker 9: the defensive front, Tian Gray, is going to be an
- 26:52Speaker 9: absolute beast.
- 26:52Speaker 6: His offensive line is real.
- 26:54Speaker 4: C.J.
- 26:54Speaker 9: Carr, as you referenced, he's a real Heisman contender. I mean,
- 26:57Speaker 9: he's one of the best quarterbacks in America, much like
- 26:59Speaker 9: Dante Moore is. Receiving court, they're loaded there. And what's
- 27:02Speaker 9: fun is they got like four or five guys with
- 27:04Speaker 9: NFL last names, which is kind of fun, whether it's
- 27:06Speaker 9: Burris or Bettis or Fitzgerald, which is amazing with Larry
- 27:10Speaker 9: being inducted and Devin being on the team now. But
- 27:12Speaker 9: then to your point at running back, when I watched it,
- 27:14Speaker 9: you know, you talk to Marcus Freeman about the backs
- 27:16Speaker 9: in that situation.
- 27:17Speaker 6: He's like, look, I believe in development.
- 27:20Speaker 9: And I think when I look at Notre Dame in general,
- 27:22Speaker 9: they've got old school values, but they are a modern operation,
- 27:26Speaker 9: whether that's portal, NIL, facilities, of course, with what they
- 27:30Speaker 9: just unveiled. But point being, they also lean on like,
- 27:33Speaker 9: if we recruited you and we believe in you, we're
- 27:36Speaker 9: going to develop you and let you play. So I
- 27:38Speaker 9: think they're going to be just fine in that regard.
- 27:40Speaker 9: They are one of the best corners, not the best
- 27:41Speaker 9: corner in the country. So yeah, the schedule, it's a
- 27:44Speaker 9: good point, but That's the part of a head coach, right?
- 27:47Speaker 9: You have to create a standard where every Tuesday and Wednesday,
- 27:50Speaker 9: it's the most challenging thing you do all week. So
- 27:52Speaker 9: I expect them to meet that moment when Miami comes
- 27:55Speaker 9: to town.
- 27:55Speaker 6: It'll be a hell of a game.
- 27:56Speaker 1: All right, the Big Ten, NBC has the Big Ten
- 27:58Speaker 1: all year. Ohio State just loaded and loaded with talent.
- 28:02Speaker 1: If not Ohio State, who?
- 28:06Speaker 9: In the league, you either go in Indiana or you
- 28:08Speaker 9: go in Oregon, and I'd probably go Oregon. You're going
- 28:11Speaker 9: to see them play each other. That's the really interesting
- 28:14Speaker 9: part about this league here. The teams at the top,
- 28:16Speaker 9: for the most part, there's a round robin if you
- 28:18Speaker 9: want to take the preseason polls or just the teams
- 28:21Speaker 9: that we think are going to be the best teams
- 28:22Speaker 9: in this league.
- 28:23Speaker 6: I wonder what happens. Do they all beat each other up?
- 28:25Speaker 6: I think that's a fair possibility.
- 28:27Speaker 9: I mean, this is much more NFL-lite than the Big
- 28:29Speaker 9: Ten we grew up in. I mean, the talent is
- 28:31Speaker 9: so premium. And then the teams right below, Iowa, Minnesota,
- 28:36Speaker 9: Penn State, Michigan, USC. I mean, USC, they are built
- 28:40Speaker 9: for it, in my eyes, this year to take a
- 28:42Speaker 9: real run. Point being, it's just not going to be
- 28:45Speaker 9: an easy week. Somebody's going to get one of those
- 28:47Speaker 9: big ones throughout the season.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yogi, we're like six minutes into this segment, and we
- 28:50Speaker 1: haven't talked about an SEC team. The SEC being down
- 28:53Speaker 1: is kind of this trending topic the past three years.
- 28:57Speaker 1: It doesn't feel, though, that there is a heavyweight at
- 29:00Speaker 1: LSU with Joe Burrow. There doesn't feel like a heavyweight
- 29:02Speaker 1: in the SEC. Georgia might be close, but is there
- 29:05Speaker 1: a heavyweight in the SEC?
- 29:08Speaker 6: They might say they're all heavyweights. They do, but do you? Yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 9: No, I don't think so, but I'm not on the
- 29:15Speaker 9: bandwagon that the SEC is down.
- 29:18Speaker 6: I don't believe that.
- 29:18Speaker 9: I think what Kalen DeBoer has done at Alabama, he's
- 29:21Speaker 9: the one every other day he's trending for, is he
- 29:23Speaker 9: going to make.
- 29:23Speaker 6: It through the season?
- 29:24Speaker 9: Folks, he's one of the best coaches in America. Crimson Tide,
- 29:27Speaker 9: you are so lucky to have him because he's going
- 29:29Speaker 9: to the playoff, winning double-digit games in an era that
- 29:34Speaker 9: Nick Saban had never had to live. Alabama had the
- 29:36Speaker 9: ability to recruit the best in the world, and it
- 29:38Speaker 9: was them versus everybody.
- 29:39Speaker 6: That is not.
- 29:40Speaker 9: the planet that we operate in right now. So, yeah,
- 29:42Speaker 9: I think Alabama's real. Keelan Russell, look out. He's an
- 29:45Speaker 9: absolute baller. He's the guy they just named quarterback. LSU
- 29:49Speaker 9: and Lane, I mean, it's the storyline of the entire offseason.
- 29:53Speaker 9: Can they hit the ground running? How quickly can he
- 29:55Speaker 9: pull so many new faces and get them together? They
- 29:57Speaker 9: obviously have a tough opener. And then you've got to
- 29:59Speaker 9: navigate what I like to call praise and blame. I
- 30:02Speaker 9: just believe praise and blame are all the same. But
- 30:05Speaker 9: it's not easy. It's a discipline to live like that.
- 30:07Speaker 9: So can Lane get his team to operate like that?
- 30:09Speaker 9: So I think there's a lot of heavyweights that play
- 30:12Speaker 9: very impressive football. And much like Missouri. Missouri and Iowa.
- 30:15Speaker 9: Missouri and Illinois. We saw what happened in the bowl games.
- 30:18Speaker 9: And that's why I think I go Big Ten over SEC.
- 30:20Speaker 9: Because we've seen it. We've seen too many data points
- 30:22Speaker 9: over the last couple seasons to... I get the NFL draft,
- 30:26Speaker 9: but you look at the games actually in play, and
- 30:28Speaker 9: Indiana-Alabama was really the tipping point where you're like, okay,
- 30:31Speaker 9: if Alabama's a heavyweight, Indiana might be the champ.
- 30:34Speaker 1: All right, before we get you out of here, and
- 30:35Speaker 1: not so fast, we don't break down the games quite
- 30:37Speaker 1: like you do. We like to look at things like uniforms.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Right now, to start the current season, 2026, who has
- 30:44Speaker 1: the best uniforms in college football? And I'm taking Pitt
- 30:47Speaker 1: off the board for two reasons. First, your uniforms are awesome,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and you went there.
- 30:51Speaker 3: What do you got?
- 30:52Speaker 6: Yeah, understand. Part of me goes classic. Michigan, Ohio State.
- 30:57Speaker 1: But you're better than that.
- 30:58Speaker 6: But I'm better than that.
- 30:59Speaker 9: I'm going to go, and it might even be lazy,
- 31:02Speaker 9: low-hanging fruit, but I think the creativity that comes out
- 31:04Speaker 9: of Eugene, and again, back to the substance from Dan Lanning,
- 31:07Speaker 9: I think it's next level because it's not just flash.
- 31:09Speaker 9: There's stories behind it, whether it's stomping out cancer and
- 31:13Speaker 9: the design around the jerseys in that regard and bringing
- 31:16Speaker 9: that individual in to tell a story to the team
- 31:18Speaker 9: to inspire them.
- 31:19Speaker 6: Every week, that to me is the must look. Like,
- 31:22Speaker 6: that's the team. I'm on Instagram. I'm like, all right,
- 31:23Speaker 6: what are they rolling with on Monday? So I'm going
- 31:25Speaker 6: Oregon Ducks.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going to go with Tulane, the green wave,
- 31:28Speaker 1: the colors pop, the helmets pop. The football's pretty good.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I don't really care if the football's good, but the
- 31:33Speaker 1: uniforms are spotless.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I'm old school. Penn State.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Yogi, you grew up a Penn State fan. I know this,
- 31:38Speaker 2: like I did. How do you get better than this simple,
- 31:41Speaker 2: you know, blue and white?
- 31:43Speaker 6: I'm with you.
- 31:43Speaker 9: I mean, I could also argue the Cardinal and Gold
- 31:45Speaker 9: from the Trojans. Like, there's something iconic about that. As
- 31:48Speaker 9: a Pitt guy, picking Penn State as the uniforms after
- 31:50Speaker 9: you took Pitt off the board, that was going to
- 31:51Speaker 9: be a hard one for me, so I'm staying with
- 31:53Speaker 9: the Ducks.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Last thing on this show, every guest we ask a question,
- 31:55Speaker 1: it's called such thing as a dumb question. We invented
- 31:58Speaker 1: it here on Not So Fast. You played at Pitt.
- 32:00Speaker 1: You're a walk-on, and I don't know how much you
- 32:02Speaker 1: played or didn't play, but we don't know much about walk-ons.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Does a walk-on actually shoot up and stand on the sidelines,
- 32:09Speaker 1: or does somehow, maybe sometimes a walk-on has to sit
- 32:12Speaker 1: in the stands or not get a ticket to the game?
- 32:13Speaker 4: How does that work?
- 32:15Speaker 6: That's a great question. It depends on how you play.
- 32:19Speaker 6: I was lucky.
- 32:20Speaker 9: I played in my second game as a true freshman
- 32:22Speaker 9: and then started and got put on scholarship. So I
- 32:24Speaker 9: was kind of like that walk-on story that you hear about.
- 32:26Speaker 9: Some guys don't, and a lot of it goes to
- 32:28Speaker 9: roster limits. Some schools say, all right, only 105 are
- 32:30Speaker 9: allowed on the sideline.
- 32:32Speaker 6: And this was back in the day. We have 125
- 32:34Speaker 6: on the team. You're in Nebraska.
- 32:35Speaker 9: You've got to watch from the stands. Or you can
- 32:37Speaker 9: maybe stand on the sideline with a jersey on. But
- 32:42Speaker 9: right now, walk-ons, sadly, are suitably being phased out in
- 32:45Speaker 9: college football, which part of that's good because that means
- 32:47Speaker 9: everybody's getting a scholarship or some sort of support when
- 32:50Speaker 9: they're in college. But to me, walk-ons are a lifeblood
- 32:53Speaker 9: of the game, and I hope that they remain.
- 32:55Speaker 1: To put a bow on this, you're saying that was
- 32:57Speaker 1: not a dumb question.
- 32:58Speaker 6: No, not a dumb question.
- 32:59Speaker 9: That was a great question. And on behalf of all
- 33:02Speaker 9: the walk-ons, I love a good walk-on story. If there's
- 33:04Speaker 9: a game I'm calling and there's.
- 33:05Speaker 6: A former walk-on earned.
- 33:06Speaker 9: Scholarship— 99.9% of the time, that name is getting dropped,
- 33:11Speaker 9: even if it doesn't play.
- 33:12Speaker 6: Got to tell the story about this guy. Got to
- 33:14Speaker 6: tell him, man. Got to love him.
- 33:15Speaker 2: By the way, one of your teammates was inducted into
- 33:17Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame in Ken Larry Fitzgerald, of course.
- 33:20Speaker 3: I know you were there this summer. Can you tell
- 33:22Speaker 3: us the coolest Hall of Famer you met while you
- 33:24Speaker 3: were in Ken?
- 33:26Speaker 6: I'm going to say Larry Fitzgerald. I'll start with that.
- 33:29Speaker 9: Kurt Warner was kind of fun just because he was
- 33:31Speaker 9: his quarterback. But really what was so cool is you
- 33:33Speaker 9: look around the party and you're like, Oh, my. Everybody
- 33:37Speaker 9: there is a Hall of Famer. And everybody's so cool.
- 33:40Speaker 9: And I think I really walked out of there believing
- 33:42Speaker 9: this even stronger.
- 33:44Speaker 6: You guys.
- 33:44Speaker 9: You guys are icons in our profession. Dan, who you
- 33:47Speaker 9: work with, is an icon in the profession. You treat
- 33:49Speaker 9: everybody like you should be treated. And I think it's
- 33:52Speaker 9: the same way with Hall of Famers. Nobody was acting
- 33:53Speaker 9: too cool for school. Nobody was brushing by you. They
- 33:56Speaker 9: always knew you kind of wanted to say hello and
- 33:58Speaker 9: give a handshake. And Larry was the best at that
- 34:00Speaker 9: and might be the best of all time at that.
- 34:02Speaker 9: So to see him there and celebrate him with all
- 34:04Speaker 9: of our teammates– I was telling my wife, like it
- 34:07Speaker 9: was one of the coolest moments of my life to
- 34:10Speaker 9: be with guys that you created all these memories with.
- 34:12Speaker 9: I mean, they saw me get a scholarship. They were
- 34:14Speaker 9: with you in a loss on the road. They were
- 34:16Speaker 9: with you when you broke up with a girlfriend and
- 34:18Speaker 9: you graduate, had your first baby or whatever. And we
- 34:21Speaker 9: stayed up until 3.30 in the morning just talking shop
- 34:24Speaker 9: all night. Man, I need Andy Lee to get in
- 34:26Speaker 9: as a punter so I can go back to Canton.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Oh, that's awesome. Yogi, we're so excited for this season.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Starting Thursday, Eastern Illinois and Minnesota. I hope you get
- 34:34Speaker 2: to join us all season long. There's going to be
- 34:36Speaker 2: so much great Big Ten football.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Thanks, buddy.
- 34:39Speaker 6: I'm all in, fellas. And congratulations to both of you
- 34:42Speaker 6: on creating this new show.
- 34:43Speaker 3: All right. Thank you so much, Yogi. That's Yogi Roth.
- 34:46Speaker 3: That's our boy. On Big Ten.
- 34:47Speaker 2: There are so many good games on his schedule. And
- 34:50Speaker 2: he's got me so fired up, Paul.
- 34:52Speaker 3: That's incredible.
- 34:53Speaker 1: I'm ready to hit someone. I'm actually ready to lightly
- 34:55Speaker 1: hit someone. All right.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Coming up next, we have a new segment. Of course,
- 34:59Speaker 3: all our segments are new.
- 35:00Speaker 2: It's a new show called The Clip Joint, where we're
- 35:02Speaker 2: going to hear from Dan Patrick and many other famous
- 35:04Speaker 2: people from around the sports world.
- 35:06Speaker 3: That's next. Not so fast.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Why do we have to bring our first guest to
- 35:11Speaker 1: be someone that good looking?
- 35:12Speaker 3: Yeah, the hair was a problem.
- 35:13Speaker 1: It's a problem for us.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Definitely for us. Not him.
- 35:16Speaker 1: We dressed up too.
- 35:22Speaker 4: How would you use him? I would take it slow
- 35:25Speaker 4: at first.
- 35:27Speaker 8: One thing I learned in my days working for New
- 35:30Speaker 8: England in the short term I was there.
- 35:32Speaker 4: Is that we would have weeks, right?
- 35:34Speaker 8: And you remember this, like Gronkowski had like the, I
- 35:37Speaker 8: don't know, some metal thing in his wrist or whatever, right?
- 35:40Speaker 4: And one of his bionic injury moments.
- 35:44Speaker 8: And I remember he came back and I was like,
- 35:46Speaker 8: oh gosh, he practiced this week. He's going to play. Oh,
- 35:50Speaker 8: he's not going to play. All right, next week. All right,
- 35:52Speaker 8: practice all week. Look pretty good.
- 35:54Speaker 4: I guess he's going to. Oh, no, he's not going
- 35:55Speaker 4: to play.
- 35:56Speaker 8: Bill was great at making sure the guys were ready
- 35:59Speaker 8: and in game shape, not just throwing them out there
- 36:01Speaker 8: because he's available again. And hopefully they take the same approach.
- 36:06Speaker 8: I'm surprised it took him this long to get into
- 36:08Speaker 8: training camp because I would have thought he'd want to
- 36:10Speaker 8: get into some of the combative situations and just feel
- 36:14Speaker 8: and get his body into football shape that way. I
- 36:16Speaker 8: think first game, you know, 15, 25 snaps on big
- 36:21Speaker 8: passing downs. That's what I would envision. But who knows?
- 36:24Speaker 8: He is such a freak of nature. Maybe he's capable
- 36:26Speaker 8: of more.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Back on Not So Fast, Pabst and Perloff here. Already
- 36:30Speaker 1: getting a reaction on the new show. Just got a
- 36:32Speaker 1: text from the daughter. Dad, can I get some gas money?
- 36:35Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 36:35Speaker 2: I was during break talking to the backroom guys at
- 36:37Speaker 2: the EP show.
- 36:38Speaker 3: I asked one, how's the show going? He said, fine.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Fine.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Like, fine?
- 36:42Speaker 3: Like, she's fine?
- 36:44Speaker 1: You guys are fine.
- 36:46Speaker 3: Serviceable.
- 36:47Speaker 1: All right, let's get to it. Aaron Donald is now
- 36:48Speaker 1: a Ram. There's Chris Sims talking about it. Chris said,
- 36:51Speaker 1: You've got to be careful with how you use this guy,
- 36:53Speaker 1: especially early. It seems like that's the plan.
- 36:55Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 36:56Speaker 2: And, Paul, I know you reached out to our good buddy, J.J. Watt, who,
- 37:00Speaker 2: you know, an aging defensive lineman. What did he say
- 37:02Speaker 2: about what Aaron Donald should do?
- 37:03Speaker 3: So, yeah, we texted J.J.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Watt a couple weeks ago on the Dan Patrick Show,
- 37:06Speaker 1: and he said the thing with Aaron Donald is you
- 37:09Speaker 1: can be in shape, and you can be in football shape,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and then you can be in season shape. And season
- 37:13Speaker 1: shape takes a little longer. And he goes, Aaron Donald's
- 37:15Speaker 1: probably getting in season shape right now, but you don't
- 37:18Speaker 1: want to mess with that. He goes, under 40 plays
- 37:20Speaker 1: a game is ideal. because you want him in the
- 37:23Speaker 1: back half of the season more so than the first half.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Of the season.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the thing about Aaron Donald, though, you
- 37:28Speaker 2: saw those Instagram clips where he was basically bench-pressing 500 pounds.
- 37:33Speaker 3: I don't know that he ever got out of shape, Paul.
- 37:35Speaker 3: I think he's going to be okay.
- 37:37Speaker 1: We know about getting out of shape. He was not
- 37:39Speaker 1: out of shape.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I understand what Chris is saying, but I feel
- 37:41Speaker 2: like he's such an exception to every rule.
- 37:43Speaker 3: I think Aaron Donald is going to be okay pretty soon.
- 37:45Speaker 1: You know, and Chris Sims had some flamethrowing takes today,
- 37:47Speaker 1: a little too warm. We like warm takes, not hot takes,
- 37:49Speaker 1: but Chris went hot. Check this one out. Here's Chris
- 37:52Speaker 1: Sims talking about the Bills, who everyone thinks is a favorite.
- 37:55Speaker 8: To me, the Buffalo Bills have been overrated for quite
- 37:58Speaker 8: some time. You know, I do not think they should
- 38:01Speaker 8: have fired Sean McDermott. That would be the first thing.
- 38:04Speaker 8: And anybody that knows me or listens to me, I
- 38:07Speaker 8: always say it. I mean, they're in the window. It feels,
- 38:10Speaker 8: and you and I have had this conversation, very John Elway-ish,
- 38:13Speaker 8: where I go, wait, the team, you know, they're good,
- 38:16Speaker 8: but we're going to put them in the Super Bowl window?
- 38:18Speaker 8: Why is that? Oh, because the quarterback is the best
- 38:20Speaker 8: player in the NFL right now. And I just look
- 38:23Speaker 8: at it, hey, I like DJ Moore. Are they going
- 38:25Speaker 8: to get a new coach energy bump with a guy
- 38:28Speaker 8: that was already there and part of the regime as is?
- 38:31Speaker 4: I don't know about that.
- 38:32Speaker 8: And I still come away, and as compared to most
- 38:35Speaker 8: of the top teams in football, I go, if we
- 38:38Speaker 8: walk down the street in New York City, Dan, And
- 38:41Speaker 8: I asked, you know, Johnny on 52nd and 5th and go, hey,
- 38:43Speaker 8: who's the best player on the Bills defense? I think
- 38:46Speaker 8: you'd get a lot of, hold on, they got.
- 38:51Speaker 4: That Ed Oliver guy.
- 38:53Speaker 8: And so that, to me, says a lot right there.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Wow. You know, I love Chris Simms' hot take. He's
- 39:01Speaker 3: had some huge ones over the years. I remember he
- 39:04Speaker 3: hits on a lot of them. Lamar Jackson, he was
- 39:05Speaker 3: way ahead of everyone. Yep. I think he's right, Paul,
- 39:08Speaker 3: because I do that too.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Actually, when you pull back and you look at the Bills,
- 39:12Speaker 2: they have not gotten to the Super Bowl with Josh Allen.
- 39:14Speaker 3: That's a reality.
- 39:15Speaker 2: They had their chance last year where no Patrick Mahomes
- 39:17Speaker 2: did not do it. I have a tendency to overrate
- 39:20Speaker 2: them because I love Josh Allen. As a whole team,
- 39:22Speaker 2: I'm not sure they're there.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought Chris was going to pop that top
- 39:25Speaker 1: button on that take. Here's the thing. They've got a
- 39:27Speaker 1: good running game, the Bills. They've lost in defense. over
- 39:30Speaker 1: the past three years, and something has to go. When
- 39:33Speaker 1: Josh Allen's making $ 275 million, something has to go. It
- 39:36Speaker 1: reminds me of when Russell Wilson got paid, and they
- 39:38Speaker 1: lost some defenders, and they got further from the Super Bowl.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you could say it was Sean McDermott
- 39:42Speaker 2: was the problem, but they brought in.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Joe Brady, who was the OC there. So I don't
- 39:46Speaker 3: know if that's a radical enough move I'm with Chris.
- 39:48Speaker 3: I'm going to fade them. We're going to do a
- 39:50Speaker 3: Super Bowl pick next week, I believe.
- 39:51Speaker 1: For sure.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I don't think I'm going to have Buffalo on there.
- 39:54Speaker 2: All right, let's turn back to college. Joel Klatt, the
- 39:57Speaker 2: great college football broadcaster, was on the DP show today,
- 40:00Speaker 2: and he explained why he's not concerned about the rather
- 40:03Speaker 2: low attendance at the USC game.
- 40:05Speaker 10: I don't think it's indicative of the wider support that
- 40:08Speaker 10: they get. I live in Orange County, south of Los Angeles,
- 40:11Speaker 10: and I can tell you everybody is talking about USC.
- 40:15Speaker 10: I think it's over 90 degrees. And in LA, when
- 40:18Speaker 10: it's over 90 degrees, it might as well be 150.
- 40:20Speaker 10: No one does anything. You should see when it rains
- 40:23Speaker 10: out here, Dan, like it's like a blizzard in the
- 40:26Speaker 10: East coast.
- 40:27Speaker 4: No one drives when it rains.
- 40:29Speaker 10: So you can call us on the West coast fair weather,
- 40:32Speaker 10: and that might be accurate, but I wasn't concerned necessarily
- 40:35Speaker 10: with the lack of fans in the stands in a week,
- 40:38Speaker 10: zero game when it's, you know, in the Coliseum, it
- 40:40Speaker 10: had to feel like it was 105 degrees.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Oh, my God. What an apologist. I'm sorry, Paul.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Listen, I'm no warrior, but I can handle 90 degrees
- 40:49Speaker 2: to watch my team.
- 40:51Speaker 1: With your skin tone?
- 40:52Speaker 2: Yeah, no, listen, I would have been well sunscreened. I
- 40:54Speaker 2: would have had one of those big sun hats. But
- 40:56Speaker 2: come on, the SEC, I would say even a worse
- 41:00Speaker 2: game than that, you'd have 80,000 people.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it was pretty sad. I feel bad for the
- 41:03Speaker 1: fans who did sit there in the heat and got
- 41:05Speaker 1: scalded to watch football because they get lumped in with
- 41:07Speaker 1: the other L.A.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Fans.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Look, it won't matter if they win a couple ballgames
- 41:10Speaker 1: in a row, but yeah, it wasn't great. Look, it
- 41:12Speaker 1: was a great broadcast by NBC. NBC opens the broadcast
- 41:15Speaker 1: with this sweeping move, and they show a bunch of
- 41:17Speaker 1: stands that were empty. I was like, there it is.
- 41:20Speaker 1: And there's... You know, friends and family only.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Oh, there's a lot. Unless everyone's wearing a red shirt.
- 41:24Speaker 3: It was a red out. There's a lot of room there.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it was a red out.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see.
- 41:28Speaker 2: When USC is really good at the end of the
- 41:29Speaker 2: year and everyone jumps on it, I'm going to be like,
- 41:32Speaker 2: where were you in August?
- 41:32Speaker 3: By the way, it's not a great sign for August football, Paul.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Oh, we love August football. All right, next thing. Here's
- 41:39Speaker 1: a team that's going in a pretty good direction. Charles
- 41:41Speaker 1: Huff is the new head coach at University of Memphis football.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Memphis football, good and bad. You never know how they're
- 41:46Speaker 1: going to be. They had a big win against UNLV,
- 41:49Speaker 1: a really good game for Memphis football. Charles Huff, the
- 41:51Speaker 1: new coach, talked about his philosophy.
- 41:54Speaker 11: In order for you to be successful in life, you've
- 41:55Speaker 11: got to be tough. And you've got to be able
- 41:58Speaker 11: to find the young men who believe in that, understand that.
- 42:00Speaker 11: We don't play music at practice. So if you want music,
- 42:04Speaker 11: you're not going to play for me. So we get
- 42:05Speaker 11: the kids who are worried about football and creating value
- 42:08Speaker 11: for themselves. We don't do ice cream trucks anymore. We
- 42:11Speaker 11: don't do fun things. You know what's fun? That locker
- 42:15Speaker 11: room right now is fun.
- 42:17Speaker 1: That's my guy. I'm calling him. Charles. That's my guy.
- 42:20Speaker 3: I'm calling it.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Not so fast. We love that. We're tough guys, men
- 42:23Speaker 1: of the people. But I love that. I think the
- 42:26Speaker 1: new Memphis t-shirt this year, no ice cream trucks. Blue, black.
- 42:30Speaker 3: There you go.
- 42:31Speaker 2: My reaction was, there are other programs that have ice
- 42:33Speaker 2: cream trucks? I want to play a school that has
- 42:35Speaker 2: an ice cream truck.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Yeah, what is that, Pepperdine? I don't even think they
- 42:37Speaker 1: have a football team.
- 42:38Speaker 2: You know, at the end of practice, you start hearing
- 42:39Speaker 2: that song from the ice cream truck? Yeah, I understand
- 42:42Speaker 2: what you're saying, but other schools play music.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Because you get used to the music.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Yeah, thumping music.
- 42:47Speaker 3: This is great in August.
- 42:49Speaker 2: If they start out 3-6, everyone's going to be like,
- 42:51Speaker 2: bring in the ice cream trucks.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Doesn't matter. He won the press conference. He won the
- 42:54Speaker 1: game against UNLV. All right, a little thing we do
- 42:55Speaker 1: on Not So Fast. We take input from you. Something
- 42:58Speaker 1: random you saw on the internet that makes us laugh
- 43:00Speaker 1: or makes us think.
- 43:01Speaker 4: Here it is.
- 43:02Speaker 1: This guy is a comedian named Daniel LaBelle. And he
- 43:05Speaker 1: and his friend... I've been watching this on a loop.
- 43:08Speaker 1: He and his friend run and play board games. I
- 43:11Speaker 1: could watch this all day.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, we would be doing it, but much slower.
- 43:15Speaker 2: One of the reasons we're called Not So Fast is
- 43:17Speaker 2: because neither of us had this kind of speed.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Factual name.
- 43:19Speaker 3: But I love it when the games go completely sideways.
- 43:21Speaker 3: You're right, it's mesmerizing.
- 43:22Speaker 1: I like Twister. I think Twister is coming up here.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Running and playing. There it is, running and playing Twister.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Are we going to recreate this? I mean, Operation,
- 43:31Speaker 3: that's impossible as is.
- 43:32Speaker 1: I pulled a hammy just watching that. But that was fun.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Daniel the Bella Comedian with the rando. Send in your
- 43:37Speaker 1: thoughts to us, Not So Fast, on Twitter. All right,
- 43:39Speaker 1: coming up next... PCA MVP. I'm down for that and
- 43:43Speaker 1: a lot, lot more. The feel good. Stick around. Not
- 43:45Speaker 1: So Fast. A lot more coming up.
- 43:47Speaker 4: I love those guys.
- 43:48Speaker 3: That's so good. Are they going to do a follow-up?
- 43:50Speaker 4: I hope so.
- 43:51Speaker 1: I could watch that for a living.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if there are any more games.
- 43:54Speaker 3: Hit the big ones.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Back on Not So Fast.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Bingo. There he is.
- 44:01Speaker 1: My boy, PCA. That's all he does is hit home
- 44:04Speaker 1: runs and run fast.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Okay, okay.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Now, Paul, if you don't know, it's a Chicago native.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Is this you forcing your hometown team into the show,
- 44:12Speaker 2: or do.
- 44:13Speaker 3: You really think he's going to secure the NL MVP?
- 44:15Speaker 1: You know, Pete and I don't need any help winning
- 44:17Speaker 1: the MVP. Shohei took a few months off pitching. It's
- 44:20Speaker 1: on a T for him. It's almost over, Johnny.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Yeah, what's it mean, by the way, PCA does win
- 44:25Speaker 2: the MVP, which looks like an inevitable, that he won
- 44:28Speaker 2: during the Shohei era.
- 44:29Speaker 3: Is this like Karl Malone and Charles Barkley winning in
- 44:31Speaker 3: the NBA?
- 44:32Speaker 1: I think it's a compliment. If you're Pete Crow Armstrong
- 44:34Speaker 1: and you win an MVP during Otani, you're like, how'd
- 44:37Speaker 1: you beat Otani? It's like conquering something.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think we know how he beat Otani.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Otani's a little bit down. I don't think he's 100% healthy,
- 44:44Speaker 2: and he's not really pitching.
- 44:45Speaker 1: All right, another issue this weekend, you have issues with
- 44:47Speaker 1: the Scrolls.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Oh, boy, don't get me started.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Give me a little bit on it.
- 44:51Speaker 3: Okay, so ESPN made a big announcement.
- 44:53Speaker 2: They are not going to do the score scroll at
- 44:54Speaker 2: the bottom of their game, and they had the North
- 44:56Speaker 2: Carolina TCU game. Not much was going on in Week 0,
- 45:00Speaker 2: but it was an adjustment for me because I wanted
- 45:02Speaker 2: to say to myself.
- 45:02Speaker 3: What's next?
- 45:03Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to talk more about this tomorrow, but
- 45:05Speaker 1: it was weird not having a lot of stuff on
- 45:06Speaker 1: the screen. Nice, clean looks.
- 45:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:09Speaker 1: But I had to go to the phone for the scores.
- 45:11Speaker 3: I think we'll get used to it, but you know
- 45:13Speaker 3: I don't like change.
- 45:14Speaker 1: First show, not so fast, Pabst and Perloff. We already
- 45:17Speaker 1: have criticism coming in.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Shocker.
- 45:19Speaker 1: We're calling this constructive criticism. We want to hear from you. Twitter, Instagram, MySpace,
- 45:23Speaker 1: whatever it is. Here's a little constructive criticism, Perl. Here's
- 45:26Speaker 1: the first one.
- 45:27Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 45:29Speaker 1: From Michael, where would you want to see a college
- 45:31Speaker 1: football game played outside the U.S.? I think there's one
- 45:33Speaker 1: coming up in a couple weeks. I've always wanted to
- 45:36Speaker 1: see college football at Wembley Stadium, and it's coming up.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Ireland's had it for a while now with that Aer
- 45:41Speaker 1: Lingus game they've had every year. But I'm thinking Wembley.
- 45:44Speaker 3: You know, I'm going to go off the board here. Argentina, Paul.
- 45:47Speaker 3: Because college football reminds me a little bit of soccer.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Those crazy soccer crowds.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Can you imagine them for a Big Ten game or
- 45:53Speaker 2: an SEC game? I know it's actually a long flight.
- 45:56Speaker 2: I've been there for my honeymoon, not to brag. But
- 45:58Speaker 2: I went to a soccer game. It's the most electric
- 46:01Speaker 2: atmosphere I've ever seen. I'd love to see what they
- 46:02Speaker 2: did with the college game.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Good job.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Shout out to your wife.
- 46:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Next constructive criticism.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 46:07Speaker 1: Threat level midnight.
- 46:07Speaker 3: Love that.
- 46:08Speaker 1: With an afternoon to evening slate of college football games,
- 46:11Speaker 1: when is the best time to bring out the main course?
- 46:13Speaker 1: Now he's saying main course, not like a sit-down meal.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Like if the wings are the main course or ribs.
- 46:19Speaker 1: I would say 6.30. You got the 3 p.m. Eastern
- 46:22Speaker 1: slate of games. If they're done, you have that little
- 46:25Speaker 1: window between 6.30 and 7.30 before the night game. So
- 46:27Speaker 1: I'd say after 6.30, before 8 p.m.
- 46:29Speaker 3: No, I mean, it's a long day. It starts at noon. Yep.
- 46:32Speaker 2: And you could go to 2 a.m. And often we
- 46:34Speaker 2: do go to 2 a.m. I actually say no main meal.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Just nibble, nibble, nibble, nibble. And drink if you want.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Graze and graze.
- 46:40Speaker 3: All right.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Our next criticism.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 46:43Speaker 1: From our boy, John Fanta. Fanta coming up. What is that? Tonight,
- 46:46Speaker 1: Fanta in 60 debuts tonight. NBC Sports Now. Fanta says,
- 46:50Speaker 1: the NFL team you think everybody is underestimating this season.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Let's tease that for tomorrow.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Let's see. We've got to think about that, John.
- 46:57Speaker 2: John, by the way, did an incredible job this weekend
- 47:00Speaker 2: hosting the studio show.
- 47:01Speaker 3: Brought so much energy. I loved it. So we've got
- 47:04Speaker 3: to do justice to that question. We can't just throw
- 47:05Speaker 3: something out.
- 47:06Speaker 1: That was a nice, light amount of criticism. All right,
- 47:08Speaker 1: it's time for leftovers. Everyone's got room for leftovers. They're
- 47:10Speaker 1: in the fridge. Not past three days, though. Not past
- 47:13Speaker 1: three days of leftovers. Let's check out. Oh, you love this, Pearl.
- 47:16Speaker 1: The Heisman Campaign for Ole Miss quarterback Trinidadan Chambliss and
- 47:19Speaker 1: Kiwan Lacy, the running back. at the Sphere in Vegas.
- 47:23Speaker 3: I love this.
- 47:24Speaker 2: You know, I'm a huge fan of when Heisman candidates
- 47:27Speaker 2: go up in Times Square in New York, but the
- 47:29Speaker 2: Sphere is so much bigger.
- 47:31Speaker 3: You can see it from anywhere in the city. It's incredible.
- 47:33Speaker 2: It's on the outside of the sphere. And this is
- 47:35Speaker 2: going to get those guys so much hype. Now, usually
- 47:38Speaker 2: the hype guys don't usually work out. And they obviously,
- 47:41Speaker 2: they have a major problem.
- 47:42Speaker 3: It's Lane Kiffin's down in Louisiana.
- 47:43Speaker 2: So I don't know if their offense is going to
- 47:45Speaker 2: be the same.
- 47:46Speaker 3: But I like the preseason approach.
- 47:47Speaker 1: This is a throwback to almost maybe 20, 20 plus
- 47:50Speaker 1: years ago when Joey Harrington of Oregon was in Times
- 47:53Speaker 1: Square on the side of Madison Square Garden. And that
- 47:54Speaker 1: was a gutsy play by Oregon. He got invited to,
- 47:57Speaker 1: but did not win the Heisman.
- 47:58Speaker 3: We got Paps and Perloff on the sphere. Absolutely not.
- 48:00Speaker 1: They just responded and said, absolutely not. All right, next thing. Oh,
- 48:03Speaker 1: this is not so good. Djokovic, not feeling good during
- 48:07Speaker 1: the game.
- 48:08Speaker 3: U.S.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Open, he was struggling. He finished out. You got to
- 48:11Speaker 1: give him credit as being a warrior. But that's one
- 48:13Speaker 1: of those guys you never know when it could be
- 48:15Speaker 1: the last call.
- 48:15Speaker 3: So I tuned in for this game. Not a lot
- 48:17Speaker 3: of sports going on. He was playing a guy who
- 48:18Speaker 3: had no success at all in hard.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Court and still lost. The end is nigh, Paul. I'm
- 48:24Speaker 2: a fan of Novak Djokovic.
- 48:25Speaker 3: I like the way he plays. I don't ever see
- 48:27Speaker 3: him getting back to the championship level. And, you know,
- 48:29Speaker 3: Venus Williams played last night, too.
- 48:31Speaker 2: It kind of stinks, but I think it's time to
- 48:33Speaker 2: move on in tennis past that golden era.
- 48:35Speaker 1: You know, Sampras gone, Dahl gone, people gone. We need
- 48:39Speaker 1: Federer gone. You need some new blood. You need some
- 48:41Speaker 1: new people.
- 48:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw a promo last night. It was Venus
- 48:43Speaker 2: and Joker. That's what you got right now?
- 48:46Speaker 1: You know, before we go, a lot of people were
- 48:48Speaker 1: asking where you could see our show. NBC Sports Now,
- 48:50Speaker 1: NBC Sports Network, Peacock. Sirius XM, NBC Radio. We'll come
- 48:55Speaker 1: to your house.
- 48:55Speaker 3: We'll do it directly. I actually might have to do
- 48:58Speaker 3: that for my parents to figure it out. They are watching.
- 49:00Speaker 1: To feel good. Every day on this show, we leave
- 49:02Speaker 1: you feeling good. Kittle, McCaffrey, and the other 49ers go
- 49:07Speaker 1: to Kyle Shanahan's kids' football game. There they are in
- 49:10Speaker 1: lawn chairs.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Can you imagine being in a high school game and
- 49:12Speaker 2: Christian McCaffrey sits next to you? I love the spirit.
- 49:15Speaker 2: I love that George Kittle looks healthy. This actually bodes well.
- 49:19Speaker 2: I'm upping my win total. on SF by one game.
- 49:22Speaker 1: That is all for us. Great job today, Perla. Thanks,
- 49:24Speaker 1: DP and everyone at the Dan Patrick Show for making
- 49:26Speaker 1: this all happen. Tune in to the DP Show every
- 49:28Speaker 1: morning right here, 9 a.m.
- 49:29Speaker 8: Eastern.
- 49:30Speaker 1: And then, not so fast, every day right after that,
- 49:33Speaker 1: NBC Sports Now. That's it. We're done. Talk to you tomorrow.
