- 0:00Chapter 40 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:04Dear Lord, please be with us as we read through this chapter and
- 0:07let the Holy Spirit open our eyes and ears to what you want
- 0:10us to take away from this. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:15The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebu Zoraidan,
- 0:21commander of the Imperial Guard, had released him at Rama.
- 0:25He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the other
- 0:28captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried
- 0:32into exile to Babylon. When the commander of the guard
- 0:35found Jeremiah, he said to him, The Lord your God decreed this
- 0:40disaster for this place, and now the Lord has brought it about.
- 0:43He has done just as He said He would.
- 0:46All this happened because you people sinned against the Lord
- 0:51and did not obey Him. But today I am freeing you from
- 0:55the chains on your wrist. Come with me to Babylon if you
- 0:59like, and I will look after you. But if you do not want to, then
- 1:03don't come. Look, The whole country lies
- 1:05before you. Go wherever you please.
- 1:07However, before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzzaraydin added, Go
- 1:13back to Gidalia, son of Ahikam, the son of Shafan, whom the king
- 1:21of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live
- 1:24with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.
- 1:28Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let
- 1:32him go. Don't you think that's weird?
- 1:35I mean, that he gave them provisions and a present and let
- 1:38him go. I mean, maybe there's something
- 1:40cultural about that, but he picks Jeremiah out and it just
- 1:44seems interesting. Like, again, God can assist
- 1:49things in happening or can make things, you know, influence
- 1:53people to do certain things. So Jeremiah went to Gaddelia son
- 2:00of Ahikum at Mizpah, and stayed with him among the people who
- 2:04were left behind in the land. When all the army officers and
- 2:08their men who were still in the open country heard that the king
- 2:11of Babylon had appointed Gadalia son of Ahikum as governor over
- 2:17the land and had put him in charge of the men, women, and
- 2:20children who were the poorest in the land and who had not been
- 2:23carried into exile to Babylon, they came to Gadalia at Mizpah.
- 2:29Ishmael son of Nathania, Johannan and Jonathan the son of
- 2:39Karya, Seriaya son of Tahumith the sons of Ephiah the
- 2:46Neidophathite and Jazania the son of Makethite and their men.
- 2:57Gadalia son of Ahikum, the son of Shafan, took an oath to
- 3:02reassure them and their men. Do not be afraid to serve the
- 3:06Babylonians, he said. Settle down in the land and
- 3:08serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.
- 3:11I myself will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the
- 3:16Babylonians who come to us. But you are to harvest the wine,
- 3:19summer fruit, and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars,
- 3:23and live in the towns you have taken over.
- 3:26When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom, and all other
- 3:31countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in
- 3:35Judah and had appointed Gadalia son of Ahikam the son of
- 3:39Chaffan, as governor over them, they all came back to the land
- 3:43of Judah, to Gadalia at Mizpah from all the countries where
- 3:47they had been scattered, and they harvested an abundance of
- 3:50wine and summer fruit. Jonathan son of Korea and all
- 3:55the army officers still in the open country, came to Gadalia at
- 3:59Mizpah and said to him, Don't you know that Bailes, king of
- 4:04the Ammonites, has sent Ishmael son of Nathania to take your
- 4:11life? But Gadalia's son of Ahikim did
- 4:15not believe them. Then Johannan son of Karia said
- 4:20privately to Gadalia in Mizpah, Let me go and kill Ishmael son
- 4:26of Nathania, and no one will ever know it.
- 4:29Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are
- 4:33gathered around you to be scattered, and the remnant of
- 4:36Judah to perish? But Gadalia son of Ahikam said
- 4:40to Johannan, son of Karia, don't do such a thing.
- 4:45What you say, what you are saying about Ishmael is not
- 4:48true. And that's the end of chapter
- 4:5140. So I will read chapter 41 and
- 4:58we'll continue on that. Well, actually I'll do the
- 5:02questions and answers 1st and then we'll go through chapter 41
- 5:05also. So for chapter 40, how did
- 5:08Jerusalem get caught after? How did Jeremiah get caught
- 5:12after being released? The events of chapter 40
- 5:14probably occurred before those in chapter 39.
- 5:18Throughout the book of Jeremiah, the sequence of events is
- 5:20difficult to reconstruct. The writers and editors of the
- 5:24Hebrew Scriptures were not as concerned about chronology as we
- 5:28are today. They were more concerned about
- 5:30the message. Sometimes they used events as a
- 5:33literary device by arranging narratives with the most
- 5:36important events first or by placing the most important event
- 5:39last. There is no right or wrong way,
- 5:41just different cultural methods. How did the Babylonians know God
- 5:45was behind Jerusalem's fall? The Babylonians heard about the
- 5:50God of Israel and his reputation.
- 5:52They'd also heard Jeremiah's message from the prisoners they
- 5:55had captured or from the people who had surrendered.
- 6:01Since they believed they there were many gods throughout the
- 6:04earth, they could easily believe that the God of Israel was
- 6:07permitting them to punish Jerusalem.
- 6:10How much of the population of Judah had fled?
- 6:14The people of power and influence and minority were
- 6:17primarily the ones who have had the means to escape.
- 6:21Most of the poor, however, would not have been.
- 6:23It would have been unable to flee.
- 6:26Though they probably wanted to avoid the dangers of war, they
- 6:30had to take their chances with the invading army.
- 6:34Where was mizpah? Mizpah means watchtower or
- 6:39lookout point. There was several locations with
- 6:42this name. This was probably the Mizpah of
- 6:44Joshua from chapter 18, verse 26.
- 6:48Located in the territory belonging to Benjamin.
- 6:51It was apparently the site of a religious shrine and had been a
- 6:55Center for administration or government.
- 7:02Why did Ishmael work for the Ammonites?
- 7:05Ishmael's rampage is a sad and tragic story of deceit and
- 7:10intrigue. His name suggests he may have
- 7:14been a Jew, but this cannot be proven.
- 7:17He may have been loyal to Zedekiah, the Last King of
- 7:20Judah. He may also have been an
- 7:23Ammonite, A Moabite, or an Edomite.
- 7:26His actions, apparently prompted by political opportunism, made
- 7:31him a failure in the long run. Why was Gaudelia so naive?
- 7:38We aren't told why Gaudelia chose to ignore the warnings he
- 7:42received, nor are we told how Ishmael managed to deceive him
- 7:46so completely. Perhaps Gaudelia assumed that
- 7:49his own standard of behavior based on the Law of Moses was
- 7:53the standards others lived by as well.
- 7:56Cadalia seems to have been a decent, trusting person, but
- 8:00that made him an easy mark for an unscrupulous person like
- 8:04Ishmael. That's something that to think
- 8:07about also that I did look this, I was looking up something else
- 8:15about this group of people, about this incident that
- 8:19happened. And actually I don't even know
- 8:22if I saved it. I think I might have deleted it.
- 8:27OK, so no, I did have it. So about Ishmael, the son of
- 8:31Nathaniel. He was.
- 8:34This is what I looked up and found.
- 8:37He was a royal commander from the House of David who
- 8:40assassinated Gaddalia, the Jewish governor appointed by the
- 8:44Babylonians. His actions were part of a plot
- 8:47possibly instigated by the king of the Ammonites and LED to
- 8:51further chaos and instability in Judah after the Babylonian
- 8:55conquest. It says he was of royal
- 8:57background and he was of royal lineage, a descendant of King
- 9:01David. The assassination he and 10 men
- 9:04came to Gadalia at Mizpah under the pretense of a friendly meal,
- 9:08but then murdered him and all the Judeans and Babylonian
- 9:11soldiers who were with him. As far as the motive goes, his
- 9:14actions were driven by resentment against Babylon rule
- 9:18and Gadalia, whom he saw as a collaborator.
- 9:23Aftermath, Ishmael took captives and fled, but he was pursued by
- 9:28another military leader, Johannan, son of Korea.
- 9:32Ishmael was eventually defeated and escaped to the Ammonites
- 9:36with a small number of followers.
- 9:39And he is not to be confused with Ishmael, the son of
- 9:42Abraham, who lived centuries earlier.
- 9:45So moving on to chapter 41, the set in the seventh month,
- 9:52Ishmael son of Nathaniel the son of Elisha Mama, who was of royal
- 9:58blood and had been one of the King's officers, came with 10
- 10:02men to Godalia son of Ahikum at Mizpah.
- 10:06While they were eating together there, Ishmael son of Nathaniel
- 10:12and the 10 men who were with him, got up and struck down
- 10:16Gadalia son of Ahikum the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing
- 10:23the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over
- 10:26the land. Ishmael also killed all the men
- 10:30of Judah who are with Gadalia at Mizpah, as well as the
- 10:35Babylonian soldiers who were there.
- 10:37So we can see he wasn't part of Babylon and he also was against
- 10:43these other people that were his own.
- 10:47Really. The day after Gaudelli's
- 10:50assassination, before anyone knew about it, 80 men who had
- 10:54shaved up their beards, torn their clothes, and cut
- 10:57themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria, bringing
- 11:03grain offerings and incense with them to the House of the Lord.
- 11:07Ishmael son of Nathania went out from Mizpah to meet them,
- 11:12weeping as he went. When he met them, he said Come
- 11:17to Gidalia son of Ahikum. When they went into the city,
- 11:21Ishmael son of Nathania, and the men who were with him,
- 11:26slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.
- 11:30But ten of them said to Ishmael, don't kill us.
- 11:34We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey hidden in a field.
- 11:40So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others.
- 11:44Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had
- 11:47killed, along with Cadelia, was the one King ASA had made as
- 11:53part of his defense against Basha, king of Israel.
- 11:58The Ishmael son of Nathaniel filled it with the dead.
- 12:04Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people who were in
- 12:07Mizpah, the King's daughters, along with all others who were
- 12:11leftover, whom Nebu Zuraidan, commander of the Imperial Guard,
- 12:17had appointed Gadalia son of Ahikim.
- 12:21Ishmael son of Nathaniel took them captive and set out to
- 12:26crossover to the Ammonites. When Johannon son of Korea and
- 12:33all the army officers who were with him heard about all the
- 12:36crimes Ishmael son of Nathania had committed, they took all
- 12:41their men and went to fight Ishmael son of Nathania.
- 12:46They caught up with him near the great pool in Gibeon.
- 12:51When all the people Ishmael had with him saw Johannan's son of
- 12:56Korea and the army officers who were with him.
- 12:59They were glad all the people Ishmael had taken captive at
- 13:03Mizpah turned and went over to Johannan's son of Korea.
- 13:07But Ishmael son of Nathania, and eight of his men escaped from
- 13:13Johannan and fled to the Ammonites.
- 13:16So it's interesting because he was with 10 men originally, and
- 13:19then he had eight. So I don't know what happened to
- 13:21two of them. So then Johannon son of Korea
- 13:26and all his army officers who were with him, LED away all the
- 13:29people of Mizpah who had survived, whom Johannan had
- 13:34recovered from Ishmael son of Nathania, after Ishmael had
- 13:38assassinated Gadalia son of Ahiyakim.
- 13:42The soldiers, women, children and court officials he recovered
- 13:46from Gibeon and they went on stopping at Guruth Kimim near
- 13:51Bethlehem on their way to Egypt to escape the Babulonians.
- 13:57They were afraid of afraid of them because Ishmael, son of
- 14:00Nathaniel, had killed Gaddelia son of Ahikim, whom the king of
- 14:05Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.
- 14:09And that's the end of chapter 41.
- 14:12I'll read the questions and answers for this chapter 2.
- 14:17How many are? How did only 11 men overpower so
- 14:22many? Ishmael used Gadalia's trusting
- 14:25nature to his best advantage. He increased his chance for
- 14:29success with the surprise attack.
- 14:31He may also have gained an edge over Gadalia's forces by
- 14:34attacking during a banquet, when some may have put their weapons
- 14:37aside to indulge in food and wine.
- 14:40Why did they shave their beards, tear off their clothes, and cut
- 14:43themselves? While we dress in black in our
- 14:46culture to express sorrow, people in the ancient Near East
- 14:49express sorrow in other ways. Since a beard signified a man's
- 14:53maturity and dignity to shave, it was to suggest humility and
- 14:58great loss. To tear one's clothing, which
- 15:01was handmade and more valuable in their culture than ours,
- 15:05demonstrated the depth of a tragedy greater than mere
- 15:08clothing. Cutting oneself was forbidden by
- 15:12the law according to Leviticus 19 and 21 those chapters.
- 15:17But it's not too surprising that some adopted this Pagan custom
- 15:21just as others adopted the worship of idols.
- 15:25Was the House of the Lord still standing?
- 15:28When Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, the Temple was destroyed with
- 15:33the rest of the city, but the temple site, though covered with
- 15:37debris, was still considered the House of the Lord and therefore
- 15:41sacred. Even before the Temple was
- 15:44built, David had offered a sacrifice at that exact spot to
- 15:49halt the plague against Israel. Some think it was the same
- 15:53location where Abraham had prepared to sacrifice his son.
- 15:57Why did Ishmael put on the weeping act as he as he had done
- 16:03before in verse 3, Ishmael used deception and surprise to gain
- 16:08the advantage over his unsuspecting victims.
- 16:12By pretending to join the 80 mourners in their sorrow, he was
- 16:17able to win their confidence and catch them off guard.
- 16:21How were cisterns used as a military defense?
- 16:25Water, typically scarce in Judah, was an even greater
- 16:28necessity during times of war. Cisterns were dug to collect the
- 16:33runoff of rainwater, or the flow of water from a spring.
- 16:37Cisterns that supplied the army and their animals with water
- 16:40were critical to the defense of the land.
- 16:42Cisterns were also essential for storing water during times of
- 16:45siege, when access to water was often cut off.
- 16:49How could captives simply walk away?
- 16:53Ishmael is and his men probably recognized they could not defeat
- 16:56the band of rescuers led by Johannon.
- 17:00Concerned primarily with their own escape, they apparently left
- 17:04their prisoners unguarded. 2 of Ishmael's original 10 were not
- 17:08able to get away. OK so that's what it says verse
- 17:13verse 2 and 15. So I let's see verse 2, it just
- 17:20talks about the 10 men in verse 15 it talks about eight.
- 17:25Yeah, that's just, you don't know what happened to them.
- 17:28It doesn't really say that they went, but I guess that's an
- 17:31assumption there that two were missing.
- 17:33I you know, the, the Scripture doesn't say what happened to
- 17:37them. So anyway, that is the end of
- 17:40chapters 40 and 41. I maybe you have time to read 42
- 17:49also. I'll do I'll go ahead with that
- 17:51one. OK, so then, then all the army
- 17:54officers including Johannon son of Korea and Josania son of
- 18:01Hoshey Aya, and all the people from the least to the greatest
- 18:05approached Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, Please hear our
- 18:09petition and pray to the Lord your God for this entire
- 18:12remnant, for as you now see those, well we were once many,
- 18:17now only a few are left. Pray that the Lord your God will
- 18:22tell us where we should go and what we should do.
- 18:26I have heard you, replied Jeremiah the prophet.
- 18:28I will certainly pray to the Lord your God as you have
- 18:31requested. I will tell you everything the
- 18:34Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.
- 18:37Then they said to Jeremiah, May the Lord be a true and faithful
- 18:42witness against us if we do not act in accordance with
- 18:46everything the Lord your God sends you to tell us, whether it
- 18:51is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God to
- 18:57whom we are sending you so that it will go well with us for we
- 19:02will obey the Lord our God. So that's really interesting
- 19:07that we see here. First of all, they're, they're
- 19:08asking God, they're making a vow, they're actually committing
- 19:14their, I mean, they're showing their seriousness about their
- 19:17vow, but if they break it, they're going to have punishment
- 19:21against them on this based on what they said.
- 19:25And they're saying that they're going to going to obey God.
- 19:29So here's what happens. 10 days later, the word of the Lord came
- 19:33to Jeremiah. So they had to wait, they had to
- 19:35have patience, because Jeremiah didn't get an answer right away,
- 19:40continuing at verse 8. So he called together Johannon's
- 19:43son of Korea and all the army officers who were with him, and
- 19:46all the people from the least to the greatest.
- 19:49He said to them, This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, to
- 19:52whom you sent me to present your petition, says.
- 19:55If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you
- 19:59down. I will plant you and not uproot
- 20:01you, for I have relented concerning the disaster I have
- 20:05inflicted on you. Do not be afraid of the king of
- 20:08Babylon, whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him,
- 20:11declares the Lord, for I am with you and will save you and
- 20:16deliver you from his hands. So this is going to make them
- 20:22have to trust God again, and God's saying he's going to be
- 20:25with them. And this is another thing that
- 20:27is very common with God. Do not be afraid.
- 20:31And the Holy Spirit gives us, you know, there's No Fear when
- 20:35we have the Holy Spirit. So he gives courage to people
- 20:41and then God further says in verse 12, I will show you
- 20:44compassion so that he will have compassion on you and restore
- 20:49you to your land. Now here's the here's the catch
- 20:54here. However, if you say we will not
- 20:58stay in this land and so disobey the Lord your God, and if you
- 21:04say no, we will go and live in Egypt where we will not see war
- 21:10or hear the trumpet, or be hungry for bread, then hear the
- 21:15word of the Lord, you remnant of Judah.
- 21:18This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says.
- 21:21If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go settle
- 21:25there, then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the
- 21:30famine you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will
- 21:34die. Indeed, all who are determined
- 21:38to go to Egypt to settle there will die by the sword, famine
- 21:42and plague. Not one of them will survive or
- 21:46escape the disaster I will bring on them.
- 21:48This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel says.
- 21:51As my anger and wrath have been poured out on those who lived in
- 21:57Jerusalem, so will My wrath be poured out on you.
- 22:02When you go to Egypt. You will be a curse and an
- 22:06object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach.
- 22:10You will never see this place again.
- 22:14Remnant of Judah, The Lord has told you, do not go to Egypt.
- 22:20Be sure of this. I warn you today that you made a
- 22:24fatal mistake when you sent me to the Lord your God and said,
- 22:28Pray to the Lord our God for us. Tell us everything he says and
- 22:32we will do it. I have told you today, but you
- 22:36still have not obeyed the Lord your God in all he sent me to
- 22:42tell you. So now be sure of this.
- 22:45You will die by the sword, famine and plague in the place
- 22:48where you want to go settle. So this continues on and I will
- 22:56read the questions and answers for this.
- 22:58So it is. Yeah, that's to say anything to
- 23:02God to make a vow like that has consequences.
- 23:07There was or where was Jeremiah during Ishmael's attack?
- 23:13Jeremiah's whereabouts during Ishmael's violent rampage are
- 23:16not mentioned. Some speculate that Jeremiah may
- 23:19have been one of the captives held by Ishmael and freed by
- 23:22Johanna and Gibbian. Why did the people ask for
- 23:25divine guidance if the decision was already made?
- 23:29Apparently they assumed God wanted them to escape to Egypt.
- 23:32They probably came to Jeremiah to discover not whether to go,
- 23:37but how to go. Perhaps they wanted to be
- 23:40assured God was with them. That's something that we could
- 23:44definitely learn from, that we should try not to act by our own
- 23:50thoughts and make sure it's from God and not just something we
- 23:53want to do and something we're trying to justify because it,
- 23:59you know, God's will prevails. And if God says it, it's going
- 24:02to happen. And these people are learning
- 24:04that. And that's another thing that
- 24:06God does these things to cause people to repent.
- 24:11But if they don't, they're just refusing him.
- 24:13They're rebellion. They don't care about him.
- 24:15So God is also a God of justice. So what was their fatal mistake?
- 24:22Promising to listen to God when they had already decided what
- 24:27they were going to do. They would only obey God if He
- 24:31endorsed their plans. Since His instructions
- 24:34conflicted with their desire to head to Egypt, they changed
- 24:38their tune. They were hypocrites.
- 24:40They said one thing and did another.
- 24:43They had planned to go to Egypt all along, with or without God's
- 24:46approval. How did Jeremiah know their
- 24:49minds were made-up? Jeremiah probably sensed their
- 24:53restless mood, even though they had not not yet responded
- 24:57verbally. He could see the expressions and
- 25:00read their body language. Or when the word of the Lord
- 25:03came to Jeremiah, God may have told Jeremiah what their
- 25:06response would be. And that's the end of chapters
- 25:12up to chapter 42.
