Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The government's planning to hand tradees the power to consent
- 0:03Speaker 1: basic housing projects. Businesses with a proven track record, such
- 0:08Speaker 1: as those building hundreds of near identical homes each year,
- 0:11Speaker 1: will be able to access a streamlined consent process. Plumbers
- 0:14Speaker 1: and drain layers will also be able to certify their
- 0:17Speaker 1: own low and general risk work without needing the council
- 0:19Speaker 1: concent or inspection or anything like that, just like electricians
- 0:23Speaker 1: and gas fitters, who can already self certify at the moment.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Greg Wallace is the Master Plumber's chief executive. He's with
- 0:29Speaker 1: us live this morning. Greg, Good morning, Welcome to the show.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Good morning, Ryan, great to be on, Thanks for.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Being with me. What types of jobs are we talking
- 0:37Speaker 3: about here?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Look, it's low risk. It's normally your DJ, your Jenny
- 0:42Speaker 2: in or your single level new house build awesome minor
- 0:49Speaker 2: renovations we're talking about, Ryan, We like.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You could if you're putting new to shower and etc.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Does that need to be go through hoops at the moment?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Well, if we if a bomber comes into your house,
- 1:01Speaker 2: Ryan and just moves the bathroom fixes around existing bathroom,
- 1:05Speaker 2: the schedule one, you need no consent for that, so
- 1:08Speaker 2: you can move the toilet, shower base and all around
- 1:11Speaker 2: in different positions, and then the schedule one the Building
- 1:13Speaker 2: Act allows you to do that. If you add one
- 1:17Speaker 2: foot onto your bathroom at home, you then have to
- 1:20Speaker 2: go through a consent and get about the four inspections,
- 1:23Speaker 2: which really does add to the cost and time for construction.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So the whole concept about this is getting more productivity
- 1:30Speaker 2: in the construction industry and lowering costs for consumers.
- 1:35Speaker 3: So those types of renolds would be included here if
- 1:38Speaker 3: you were moving a bathroom or you were making a
- 1:40Speaker 3: bathroom bigger look.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Extensions, when you're adding an on site to bathroom, we
- 1:45Speaker 2: hope they will be included. Those are the details that
- 1:48Speaker 2: the government still has to come through with their consultation,
- 1:52Speaker 2: but we deem that as low risk, absolutely, And it's
- 1:55Speaker 2: a bit like the granny flat Ryan where there's sixty
- 1:59Speaker 2: square meata and obviously they have a bathroom in a
- 2:01Speaker 2: kitchen and they're going to be non consented and non
- 2:04Speaker 2: inspected as well.
- 2:05Speaker 3: True, so it's kind of apples and apples there, isn't it.
- 2:08Speaker 3: How much time and or money do you think this
- 2:11Speaker 3: could save us?
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well, the significant delays and consenting and inspections, particularly when
- 2:18Speaker 2: we had an eight year high of the construction sector.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So we're talking you know, consent from million dollar home
- 2:26Speaker 2: can be anything north of ten thousand dollars, But it's
- 2:29Speaker 2: really the productivity goings that we'll get. You can rate
- 2:33Speaker 2: now in clean sand between fifteen and twenty days for
- 2:36Speaker 2: a pre line inspection and sometimes because there's four inspections.
- 2:40Speaker 2: You know, you're getting to high levels of productivity that
- 2:44Speaker 2: you're waiting around for a process to happen of red
- 2:47Speaker 2: tape that you've got to trust your trades people to
- 2:50Speaker 2: be able to do it and then back them with
- 2:52Speaker 2: good guarantees and insurance programs.
- 2:54Speaker 3: How do we separate the good eggs from the bad eggs,
- 2:56Speaker 3: the good trades from the bad ones.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's what creditation program that the Prime Minister
- 3:02Speaker 2: and Minister Ping talked about. You'll have to prove your quality.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I mean what I would say is guest that's been
- 3:09Speaker 2: self certified for fourteen years now along with our friends
- 3:13Speaker 2: the electricians, and we just don't have significant issues for
- 3:18Speaker 2: that trade. A guest is ninety nine percent also a
- 3:22Speaker 2: plumber and a dream rayer. So we're hoping that the
- 3:27Speaker 2: quality that the guests for the industry has shown New
- 3:30Speaker 2: Zealand consumers will flow through to plumbing and joy.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Greg.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I'm really hopeful that this will speed up the renners
- 3:36Speaker 3: I want to do in my house. So I'm very
- 3:37Speaker 3: appreciative of you're coming on this morning. Appreciate it, Greg,
- 3:40Speaker 3: Thank you, Thanks Ron. Greg wallis Master Plumber's chief executive.
- 3:44Speaker 3: These changes are as Greg mentioned, They've still got a
- 3:48Speaker 3: lot of hoops to get through, but hopefully they will
- 3:50Speaker 3: be coming into force next year sometime. For more from
- 3:53Speaker 3: Early Edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live to news talks.
