- 0:32Hey, I actually don't know if we are live because I'm looking at
- 0:36the YouTube, but we're going to start as if we are and hope
- 0:40there's no there's no tech problems.
- 0:42Welcome to spooky anime club Season of the Vampire. 2
- 0:52settings, two set. I'll just, I'll just press call
- 0:55live, yeah. Hey, hey.
- 1:37Nothing to see, In fact, everything is smooth and
- 1:39professional. Welcome to this week's episode
- 1:45of Anime Club and we are fully in our spooky girl era.
- 1:51Welcome to our coven. Isn't that right, my fellow
- 1:55spooky girl Chris? Of course I forgot me witch's
- 2:00heart. Does that mean I have to cast
- 2:01spells in me pants? No.
- 2:04Yeah, it does. It does.
- 2:05It means you have to cut spells in your pants.
- 2:08Scared, alone and afraid. Get some.
- 2:10Pimpsels. Oh, I lost in found I think.
- 2:14Maybe you can see my nails this week are blood tipped because we
- 2:19are doing one of the most famous vampire animes.
- 2:24Is that fair to say? Yeah, dumping on the D Helsing,
- 2:29yeah. Yeah, yeah, we're going.
- 2:31We're leaning into the full vampire experience this spooky
- 2:35season. But before we dive into that,
- 2:38what are you sucking on this week, Chris?
- 2:42Because it's vampires. All right, I was going to say,
- 2:46should we not leave that till I press end life?
- 2:50No, we leave that until we set up our only fans.
- 2:53Page. Oh well, do you know what I do
- 2:58have? I've been talking about serene
- 3:02all day in the Discord, so I've got a special cookies and cream
- 3:08instead of serene. They're called Scream.
- 3:12And also, do you call it serene? Serene.
- 3:15Yeah, not Sorene. Oh no, this is revenge.
- 3:21Because what's that Internet cable you call?
- 3:25What? An Ethernet cable.
- 3:26Ethernet shut up, right? And what else I've got is.
- 3:31What else have you got to snack on?
- 3:33Oh, look, it's a little ghost guy.
- 3:35Oh my God, that's so good. Oh.
- 3:40Plug that in the Ethernet cable. It would be a ghost in the
- 3:46machine if I did. Oh, oh, oh, I've done that yet.
- 3:52Puns, we haven't done that because I was we couldn't do
- 3:56that because that was a week I couldn't do.
- 3:58But we will be doing that come November.
- 4:00Oh, Spyler. Oh.
- 4:02I didn't know that for me. Did you not?
- 4:06Have I not told you what we're doing?
- 4:08This probably. Club I just decide and then tell
- 4:13Chris to turn up or else. Yeah, I don't even know what
- 4:16we're doing next week, but I didn't even talk about it.
- 4:18Or might have, but I forgot. We've actually recorded what
- 4:22we're doing next week already. So it's like a very that's
- 4:25actually like a special type of forgetfulness.
- 4:29Yeah. Oh, is it like white chocolate
- 4:32all the way through? Are we talking cake pop?
- 4:34What's the situation? Sorry, chocolate.
- 4:38Oh, excellent. That's what you would want it to
- 4:40be, Yeah. White white chocolate is my
- 4:42favorite chocolate to be fair. Do you know what?
- 4:44White chocolate is my favorite chocolate, too, and all those
- 4:46people who say it's not real chocolate can chalk on.
- 4:54But Helsing Ultimate, this was a blast from a past for me.
- 4:59How? Yeah.
- 5:00Yeah. And can I just say I'd like a
- 5:02loving the background with the gloves, the Helsing Alucard
- 5:07gloves. Very cool.
- 5:10You're welcome. How would you describe Helsing
- 5:15Ultimate to someone who's never seen it before?
- 5:18What happens? Like clockwise or just if I
- 5:22wanted to pitch it to someone who's never watched anime
- 5:25before? I think both.
- 5:29Give me the plot 1st and then we'll have to pitch it, yeah?
- 5:35I'll just get it up here. It's set in modern day England.
- 5:39Modern day. It's not really.
- 5:41It's in the past and well, modern past. 90s, maybe late
- 5:4690s. I would say, yeah, like 80s,
- 5:50it's Queen Elizabeth because Queen Elizabeth makes an
- 5:52appearance at one point, isn't it?
- 5:57No mobile phones though. No mobile phones.
- 6:01I think it's like seventies, 80s, really out of time, Yeah.
- 6:07I'm final anyway. Certainly UK.
- 6:12It follows Sir Integra Wingate Helsing and her because she's
- 6:18female but she's been knighted so she's a Sir, which I got
- 6:22confused at the. Start Chris was like, I don't
- 6:25think you can be, I don't think you can have a title and be a
- 6:28woman. Notoriously, he thinks women
- 6:31shouldn't have titles or land. Just my opinion.
- 6:35No, I forgot we're not in the discord.
- 6:39I can't talk later. Yeah.
- 6:42Yeah, they've got this Helsing organization which protects the
- 6:47United Kingdom and the Queen Elizabeth.
- 6:51I don't know if they're branches to the Commonwealth, but the UK
- 6:55anyway, and it protects them from beasties, ghoulies,
- 7:01supernatural forces like vampires, zombies that they call
- 7:05ghouls in this and in all manner of things that crop up like
- 7:10that. And the Hellsen organization and
- 7:14one of their ancestors, who is Sir Integra's Great Granda,
- 7:23Greek maybe, and Great Granda actually captured a vampire
- 7:29called Alucod, which if you spell that backwards, that
- 7:32spells Frankenstein. And he I stole that from Jake.
- 7:37Jake, I was going to say thank you, Jake, for the joke.
- 7:43Yeah. Here on Anime Club, we like to
- 7:45credit people who are entertaining.
- 7:47Yeah. Saves me a job.
- 7:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. So they've captured this.
- 7:56He's basically Dracula, one of the original vampires.
- 7:59He's he's Guitar D and so the idea is to defeat a monster
- 8:07rollback. Geethard, can you translate that
- 8:10for the not northerners? What geet?
- 8:13Something like very. Oh, sorry.
- 8:15Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK.
- 8:17Yeah, OK. Ballard it's.
- 8:19Ballard, Mate. Sorry, is extremely Ethernet.
- 8:23And then, yeah, sorry, I've got what I was saying there.
- 8:33Oh yeah, captured a vampire. Sorry, I think it's pronounced
- 8:36soaring. So the Hells an organization
- 8:43think that to defeat a monster like a vampire you need to use a
- 8:48stronger vampire. So obviously there is some
- 8:52strong people who are normal humans.
- 8:54They've got their own militia and eventually they've got they
- 8:58conscript mercenaries and stuff like that and protecting the
- 9:02United Kingdom. But shock, horror and there's a
- 9:08spate of new vampires who are synthetic vampires.
- 9:13They find out that these vampires are being created with
- 9:18a microchip that they keep finding in the brains called a
- 9:21freak chip. So they need to get to the
- 9:24bottom of it whilst also competing with the very Irish.
- 9:30Oh, what they're called again. Irish priest.
- 9:35And no the the organization. It's not it's it's.
- 9:42Iscariot, the Iscariot Iscariot organization.
- 9:47So basically they are sent from the Pope.
- 9:50They're in another sect, but they are like these Hells and
- 9:53lots. They can't be used in monsters.
- 9:56So then they basically synthetically augment their
- 10:02people. Yeah.
- 10:03So one of the main ones who is called, I can't remember his
- 10:08name, Andrew or something, who is kind of a priest, but he's
- 10:11like the opposite side of the coin to other cards.
- 10:16So they've got this evil vampire and they've got this evil robot
- 10:20priest. Basically they, and I think they
- 10:23basically describe him like a Palladin, don't they?
- 10:25In it, he's the yeah, yeah. He's like the kind of like
- 10:30warrior priest, kind of. Yeah, he's he's like the the
- 10:34loose cannon, the same as Alucard where it's just like a
- 10:38he is bound to serve the Iscariot organization, but they
- 10:42cannot control them that very that well.
- 10:44They just point them in a general direction and say kill
- 10:47that that that is that goes the Pope wants that dead.
- 10:51So go, go and take care of it and.
- 10:54And by day, when he's not doing that, he seems to be in charge
- 10:57of an orphanage, which seems like a wild choice for someone
- 11:00so with such killing intent. I mean, I don't want to get to
- 11:10pill it. Also, I'll leave it there.
- 11:12Yeah, yeah, yeah. Safeguarding questions for the
- 11:15Vatican aside. Yeah, yeah, great description.
- 11:21And that's where we get up to is them facing off really.
- 11:25And in the third episode, you see the the there's like an
- 11:31ambush on the Helsing organization's headquarters.
- 11:38And you have like a kind of board of directors are all
- 11:40there. And obviously they're all these
- 11:42like very posh toffs who are falling apart.
- 11:45And then Integris like badass being like, pull your shit
- 11:49together, Like sort this out. My people are dying.
- 11:53So like, suck it up. Yeah.
- 11:57Yeah. Because Integra, which is she's
- 12:02a badass, basically, she's a cigar smoking gun Toten.
- 12:06She's she's the kind of she's the kind of character that puts
- 12:09her feet up on a big orc desk. She like exceeds.
- 12:13Power and. You're like, yeah, she's the
- 12:16boss. She's the boss from the
- 12:18beginning. She's the boss and also a little
- 12:20bit gender fucky, like gender nonconforming in terms of her
- 12:25depiction of the character. And you have other like female
- 12:28characters in this that are very typical anime hyper, hyper
- 12:33feminine, hyper sexualized characters like Sarah's
- 12:36Victoria. And Integra has nothing of that
- 12:40in her, which we'll get into in a bit more.
- 12:43But like, how would you pitch this to like a non anime
- 12:46watching fan? What's your like elevator pitch
- 12:49for Helsing Ultimate? I would say right sorry for the
- 12:55monsters up north community, but do you know how Nosferatu is
- 12:58boring? Yes.
- 13:02Yeah. Yes, and Sami and Dama.
- 13:05I love you, but yes. I'm only apologizing to them,
- 13:11not for me opinion and but you know how that's.
- 13:15I'd like to apologize for Chris's opinion, but I do agree
- 13:18with that. Yeah, so imagine if they took
- 13:24them key concepts where it's like a monster and violence and
- 13:28mystery and horror, blood goods, gore, and cranked it up to 10
- 13:32and made it interesting. Yeah.
- 13:35And then you get Helsing Ultimate.
- 13:37Yeah, because even even Dracula, it hasn't got that slow
- 13:42suspenseful horror or the creepiness.
- 13:44It is literally blood, good score and a cult.
- 13:48It's got Nazis in it as well. Yeah, it hasn't.
- 13:52It's got Nazis. And a blimp, yes.
- 13:56Which makes it really hard to place as like the time period of
- 14:01like what the hell is happening? Yeah, yeah.
- 14:06Yeah, yeah. But because of that, I kind of
- 14:08loved it that. And actually there is something
- 14:11that happens in this where you're seeing the reason.
- 14:15One of the reasons I love this so much, and I find it so funny,
- 14:19is that you're seeing England through Japan's eyes.
- 14:25Yeah, yes. So you're seeing.
- 14:27All of the stereotypes about that we aren't aware of about
- 14:31ourselves. Yeah.
- 14:33And some of them are like wild, like the blimp.
- 14:37Thing I like that stereotype. I I'm here for a vessel and also
- 14:44I'm here for like the in according to Helsing Ultimate.
- 14:48You're either from one of the Celtic countries, but you will
- 14:53sound Irish no matter what, or you're posh or cockney.
- 14:58That is it that those are the only stereotypes that you have
- 15:02in this and everyone, everyone conforms to one of one of those
- 15:063. Whore.
- 15:09Blimey, is that a vampire? Bollocks.
- 15:11Literally at one point, literally once someone says call
- 15:15Blimey and I died laughing because it's like, I think I had
- 15:21the same experience watching this that you had watching
- 15:23Steamboy where you're hearing like your native accent being
- 15:28done questionably. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:33But like it's so like it's, it's not great voice acting, but it
- 15:38is funny voice acting and it doesn't, I don't think it
- 15:41detracts from the actual story of it because all the the very
- 15:45dramatic bits, the acting is great.
- 15:48It's just like the random background characters are
- 15:50sometimes a bit questionable. Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 15:55I mean, even the guy, the Andrew guy from the Iscari
- 15:58organization, he's from Northern Ireland.
- 16:01He runs an orphanarium or an orphanage in Northern Ireland
- 16:05or. Yeah, that's the new word for
- 16:09it. Yeah, or child soldier camp.
- 16:13I don't know what's. Orphanarium.
- 16:15It sounds very whimsical, doesn't it?
- 16:18And this isn't where sad children live.
- 16:22Smile, smile. Smile, children, smile for the
- 16:26organ grinder. I'm sure it's our feature of
- 16:30ours. But yeah, he's got a very
- 16:35Scottish accent as well. But he is working for an Italian
- 16:39organization for the Pope. At some point, he's speaking.
- 16:43He's actually speaking Latin at some point.
- 16:46And you're like, that's interesting.
- 16:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. Didn't call that.
- 16:52I have seen this many many years ago but I cannot remember it and
- 16:59I forgot that each episodes like 50 minutes long because it's
- 17:03like feature length episodes. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:05And it's a lot. It's actually, there's only one
- 17:08series, right. But it's it's actually quite a
- 17:12meaty series because of the episode length.
- 17:15And quite a lot happens in each episode, like they don't sit
- 17:18around for long and you start right in the middle of a fight
- 17:22basically. Yeah.
- 17:26Because you start with like, the ghoul takeover of that church
- 17:31and the police trying to like, Scotland Yard.
- 17:36Scotland Yard, yeah, yeah, they've come to stop them.
- 17:40Stop them nasties. Stop them nasties.
- 17:48From nasties and and immediately you introduce to this character
- 17:55who is I think Sarah's Victoria is a bit Mary Sue, especially
- 18:00the first couple of episodes because she's used almost purely
- 18:04for exposition. She's she's got very little
- 18:07character of her own and she asks a lot of very stupid
- 18:10questions because she's there to get information for the
- 18:14audience. She's more of a plot device than
- 18:15a character. And it's not until you see her
- 18:17later, her on when she started to come into her own kind of
- 18:21powers that she actually had get some meat on her bones.
- 18:25Yeah. But yeah, there are some very
- 18:29good characters from the start. Did you have a favorite?
- 18:34Who's your favorite character? Integra.
- 18:38Yeah. She's cool.
- 18:39I think when I was first thinking about this, I was
- 18:43struggling to find a good character and because I look
- 18:48hard, he's a he's OP. Like any situation, it's just
- 18:54like he's got he's going to get out of it and he knows it.
- 18:57You know it. And sometimes even the guys he's
- 18:59fighting know it. It's just the way he does it.
- 19:02You watch it for and and it's. So dramatic.
- 19:07It's very gothic in terms of the type of yeah.
- 19:11Oh yeah, definitely the. Type of special effects.
- 19:14And then what's the I'm blanking on her name.
- 19:20The the new vampire. Sarah.
- 19:23Sarah. Sarah's Victoria.
- 19:25Yeah, I don't like her, even if if she's used for exposition.
- 19:30Just just have a voice over Couple of blobs.
- 19:36A test next. Damning when one of the main
- 19:40characters could just be replaced with voice over awesome
- 19:44subtitles. Yeah, she.
- 19:47Is a bit that and I also find her like it's.
- 19:54I find it weird how hyper sexualized she is for someone
- 19:56who is supposed to be like virginal.
- 20:00But she literally is. She's literally virgin virgin
- 20:05and very she's she's very high pitched.
- 20:10I find her hard to like care whether she lives or dies to.
- 20:15Be honest in the beginning. I just don't care.
- 20:20I mean, I don't think she says a word before she is transformed
- 20:24into a vampire because is it it's the first first episode
- 20:27where basically Alacord has been sent to deal with it with
- 20:31another vampire that's in Venus Town or a church or whatever,
- 20:35and she's a police woman and all of the other policemen or police
- 20:41people are have been slaughters to the ghouls, etcetera.
- 20:46And the bad guy vampire that really has Sarah's by the throat
- 20:51being like I'm going to kill her, What you're going to do?
- 20:54And I look conscious to say, all right, shoot, you owe me half a
- 20:58mile long. Good.
- 20:59And he was like before this. He's like.
- 21:05Are you a virgin? That's.
- 21:07Are you a virgin? He.
- 21:08Asks her. And then the bad guy vampires
- 21:10say you can't. It's like, I'm sorry, what?
- 21:17And the vampire the the bad guy vampire's right.
- 21:19You can't ask a woman that in the middle of a gunfight.
- 21:22It's inappropriate. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:29Yeah, yeah. But what he knows is that if
- 21:30she's a virgin, she can be turned into a vampire, whereas
- 21:33apparently if you are not a virgin, you just become some
- 21:36sort of mindless zombie ghoul. Yeah, that's how.
- 21:40That's how new vampires are made in this.
- 21:42That's how that's part of this vampire law, which I think I, I
- 21:49think is kind of a nod to some of the Bram Stoker stuff with
- 21:54Mina, Mina Harper. I've no clue about this.
- 22:00OK, so Bram Stoker's vampire. So you've got Dracula, who kind
- 22:09of falls into this very sort of strange toxic seduction with
- 22:14Mina Harper, who is the main characters fiance and one of the
- 22:19and he kind of does some sort of probing about the nature of
- 22:22their relationship before he starts to prey on her in the
- 22:25night. And I think it's that kind of,
- 22:28you know, can she be my bride kind of vibe.
- 22:36That was my Tasmanian voice. So thanks for explaining.
- 22:41Impressions are always good if you have to explain them
- 22:43afterwards. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:44I feel like it really adds a level of integrity to it, don't
- 22:47you? Integra, right?
- 22:50Talking of Integra, Integra is my favorite character as well.
- 22:54She's by far the coolest one of the coolest women in anime, full
- 22:59stop. I think she's best character.
- 23:02She's the best character. She's incredibly unlikable to
- 23:05start with as well. And you see some like like in I
- 23:09think they I think they use flashbacks very effectively in
- 23:12this to kind of give, give you her back story.
- 23:16And then you realize how much of A badass she is and how she's
- 23:20always been a bit of a badass. And we're here for it.
- 23:25How's your how's your your sorret N loaf?
- 23:31Me what? You're sorret N Loaf.
- 23:35I'm now deliberately mispronouncing it.
- 23:37It's it's all right, it's cookies and cream.
- 23:39I would I would have preferred like the original brown flavour.
- 23:45Nothing says flavour like brown. Stop me, dear, with a cup of
- 23:52brown. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:56I love how it feels like it sticks to your ribs.
- 23:59A saurine loaf. Do you know what I mean?
- 24:03Yeah, this doesn't have that end squidginess.
- 24:07Yeah. So.
- 24:09That's all right. It's a decent cake bar, but you
- 24:12know. To me it's a serene loaf.
- 24:17Should stick to the window. If you took it off it, this
- 24:19wouldn't. Yes.
- 24:21And it should have butter so thick that you're like, you're
- 24:26not quite sure when you're going to get to the the.
- 24:27Do you know what I mean? It should be like a slab of
- 24:29butter. Yeah.
- 24:32Yeah. Healthy snack.
- 24:35Yeah, yeah, healthy snack. Yeah.
- 24:38So Integra is amazing. Alicard is Opie and a bit and a
- 24:43bit edge lordy. He's a bit like, he reminds me
- 24:47of like my first DND character. Do you know what I mean?
- 24:50Like he's like, I'm going to play a creature of the night and
- 24:53they're going to be amazingly powerful and they're going to be
- 24:56able to do all these cool things.
- 25:01And really his own only weaknesses.
- 25:03He can't go outside during the day.
- 25:05He. Can't though, he's just a bit
- 25:09weaker. He's just a bit weaker.
- 25:13Do you know, I totally agree And do you know what sealed the deal
- 25:16for me for the edge load? Little look, me, I'm dark and
- 25:20brooding and I'm mental kind of like it was, do you know in the
- 25:25in the hotel room and he's talking to Integra and he's just
- 25:30like I'm being surrounded by a SWAT team.
- 25:32If they come in here, I'm going to RIP them a whole new water.
- 25:34I'm going to do this, and I'm going to feast on their blood
- 25:37and, I don't know, tickle their insides, all this kind of stuff.
- 25:42And he's like, all I need is your permission.
- 25:45Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:46I might have had a different dub to you.
- 25:48Yeah. I think you might have done.
- 25:52I also don't remember the hotel room, so I'm kind of curious
- 25:55what the you're watching oh do. You know when they're in.
- 26:00Is it Brazil? Oh, yeah, Yeah, you're OK.
- 26:03Yeah, yeah. So the SWAT team storms a
- 26:06building and he just. Just annihilates everyone.
- 26:10Yeah, and they're like, but they're innocent policemen.
- 26:13They might be stupid, but they're innocent.
- 26:16Is that all right, mate? Whatever.
- 26:20The outside, didn't they? Yeah.
- 26:22I'm Alucod bitch, that's basically what he does.
- 26:30Yeah, and there is something about Vampire I so I because I
- 26:35was thinking about this, like is it good or bad that Alucard is
- 26:38Opie? And I think there is something
- 26:43about vampires where they're always a little bit Opie because
- 26:46do you know who else was Opie? Vampire Hunter D Vampire Hunter
- 26:51D is like massively Opie. Like he's like killing all these
- 26:54monsters, like as if it's no thing.
- 26:58Right, if we're comparing those two right, Vampire Hunter D had
- 27:03his weakness was probably compassion because you could
- 27:06have just walked away if that was if that was Alacord and he
- 27:10saw that last he. Still had a human heart.
- 27:13Yeah, and that last came out of with a whip and said, oh, can
- 27:17you help us? I've been bitten.
- 27:18You'd be like Nah, and credits roll.
- 27:22And then you would have asked if she was a virgin.
- 27:24Let. Me just check first.
- 27:28Are you who's the last person you dated?
- 27:35It reminds me a little bit of like awkward first dates where
- 27:37you're trying to do like relationship history, but
- 27:40without giving too much away, that's what the first episode
- 27:43where he's like, are you a virgin?
- 27:45It's like, oh, this is this dates going badly.
- 27:49Have you ever seen them toast? Oh yeah, do.
- 27:54You know what he's saying, Curry.
- 27:55Do you know what he's to say? Do you know when he does things
- 27:58like carries drinks for women? And then I mentioned the
- 28:01girlfriend and boyfriend and he goes fuck off and chucks on the
- 28:04ground. That's what it's.
- 28:07There's a touch of the and also because he's in what we do in
- 28:10the shadows talk about great vampire shows.
- 28:14Matt Berry plays and he's kind of he's kind of like toast as a
- 28:18vampire in that. But there is a touch of the
- 28:21avocado, like, very dramatic. Yeah.
- 28:26Great great show currently. Watching that a little bit.
- 28:29Actually, are you? Oh that's a good one to watch
- 28:32over Halloween I reckon. German, Yeah.
- 28:40Yeah. Anyway, Helsing.
- 28:41So good with her tiny doll. So funny.
- 28:48I also love the witch hat. Anyway, Helsing a lot about
- 28:52those other vampires, back to Helsing.
- 28:55So one of the beautiful things in this is you're watching like
- 28:58all of the English stereotypes thrown back at you from from
- 29:04Japan's perspective. What do you think they get
- 29:06really right? What do you think they get
- 29:08really wrong? And what is a stereotype that
- 29:10you think is missing from Helsing Ultimate that you would
- 29:14like to see in there? Oh, right, so stereotypes are
- 29:22the accents aren't there really. Because, I mean, there's nothing
- 29:28stereotypical about a private militia.
- 29:30They've got the castles as well. Yeah.
- 29:38What I would like to see though, I don't know, maybe it's more
- 29:45people complaining about mundane things, but yeah, there's a
- 29:50vampire. But it's raining, isn't it?
- 29:54No. 70 pence for a stump now just my.
- 29:57Luck. I left my umbrella in the car.
- 30:04Next door neighbors been eaten by a ghoul, but you see the
- 30:06price of bread. Literally I was having that
- 30:10conversation earlier today. Not the Gulbert, all right.
- 30:17Oh yes, we were. Bread bet Yeah, we literally
- 30:20weren't complaining about the price of bread.
- 30:23The north-south divide. Bread down here is really
- 30:27expensive, is what I learned and it made me angry.
- 30:31You were genuinely angry though. I was genuinely angry.
- 30:37Next time you come up, bring your keys and.
- 30:41Just load up. It'll be like people who go to
- 30:43France. I'll be going to get white up
- 30:46north. Just to go to the bakery.
- 30:48Yeah. And instead of coming back with
- 30:50cigarettes and wine, I'll just come back with a load of Hovis.
- 30:55Literally. It's not even like this is what
- 30:58made me mad is it's not even like just like a local bakery,
- 31:01price of bread. This is like something that
- 31:04should nationally be a price. Yeah, infuriating.
- 31:10Anyway, price of living. Closer to London.
- 31:18Yeah, you're right. I think it doesn't need more
- 31:20complaining to be truly English. And also the the stereotypes for
- 31:28the, the kind of run with a lot of it.
- 31:30And they're like, oh, those, those Catholics don't like the
- 31:34Protestants in Ireland, do they? This is this was something that
- 31:40I also thought was interesting about seeing your culture
- 31:43through someone else's eyes. It could because I was like,
- 31:45off, like, this is what it feels like to be culturally
- 31:49appropriated, which is an unusual experience.
- 31:51Usually as white people, we don't have to worry about that
- 31:53because we're usually the criminals doing it.
- 31:58But it's this history of like, Catholics and Protestants,
- 32:01Protestants. It's like all of the surface
- 32:04themes and that they hit all the notes for Catholics hating
- 32:08Protestants and vice versa, but without any of the historical
- 32:12context. So like to like why that is the
- 32:16case. And that's kind of a beautiful
- 32:18thing. I found that quite entertaining.
- 32:23It's a novelty when it happens. To you, it's a novelty when it
- 32:27happens to me And isn't that a good like, isn't that a lovely
- 32:30position to be? And I feel very privileged that
- 32:32it's a novelty. Some would call it a privilege.
- 32:36I, I don't think some would, I think we should all call it a
- 32:39privilege. I, I definitely, I'm owning it.
- 32:45I know it's a privilege, but as a lapsed Catholic, it did make
- 32:49me, there were a few times where I'm like, I don't think that's,
- 32:51I don't think that's actually, that's not quite Catholic.
- 32:55Like it's like, it's like nearly Catholic, but not quite.
- 33:02Do Catholics not carry around blessed swords and throw Bible
- 33:06pages at them on dead creatures? Yes, but not quite the same.
- 33:11Not quite the same way. OK, OK.
- 33:16Yeah, yeah. So no, I kind of like, I do kind
- 33:20of love it and for it beings like for the Catholic Church as
- 33:23well-being in Northern Ireland. I was like, that needs to be
- 33:26more of a thing, especially when this was this was like first
- 33:31released. Yeah, which I can't remember.
- 33:35I think it was like 2006 or something.
- 33:39I don't. I don't actually have the date.
- 33:42Oh, that's off the top of my head. 2001. 2001 here we go.
- 33:51How do you feel like in terms of animation wise?
- 33:54How do you feel it held up? Because 2001. 24 years ago.
- 34:01Yeah M it it's held up amazed that it looks spot on and even
- 34:07for like the budget must have been quite big on this because
- 34:10it's not like 50 minutes of like high quality anime, especially
- 34:14then. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:16And the time as well. I think so.
- 34:19And also the colouring is is gorgeous in this.
- 34:23It's very, very like stylish. A lot of black, a lot of red,
- 34:27which is exactly what you want in a gothic E vampire delight.
- 34:32But I also love the character design in this.
- 34:36Right. And there are some other
- 34:38characters that crop up later on, like Pip.
- 34:44Pip was his name. Benedict, Benedict, Benedict
- 34:46Benedict. He's.
- 34:50One of the yes. Who's just a great, great
- 34:56character and and actually might be like if we were doing more
- 35:00than episode like 3 episodes would have like could have been
- 35:04a contender for my favorite character.
- 35:08Jordan is I forgot about him because he he's introduced
- 35:11episode 3 or 4. He's introduced at the episode
- 35:154, I think when it's when they get all the mercenaries
- 35:18together. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:22And then Sarah is kind of Chins 1.
- 35:25Yeah, yeah. But yeah, he's like, he reminded
- 35:30me so much. Kind of like Spike Spiegel.
- 35:34Very Spike Spiegel character. Very like cool, but without
- 35:37being like. Incompetent.
- 35:41That makes sense. He's.
- 35:42Competent. He's competent.
- 35:44He's competent and goofy enough that you're like, oh, this guy
- 35:47doesn't care what anyone thinks. It's but you know, like those.
- 35:50People who are effortlessly cool.
- 35:53Yeah, he is like a very severe disadvantage because he's just a
- 35:58normal human. He's he's got a lot of
- 36:00experience fighting as a mercenary, but he's never going
- 36:04to live up to a vampire and strength wise or so he's kind of
- 36:09got to do the the background sneaky, sneaky parts and
- 36:14navigate the human world as opposed to Alucard who goes in
- 36:17guns blazing. Yeah, and he also has to do
- 36:20teamwork as well. So that's where you see like you
- 36:24see him as like a kind of like the face of the human side of
- 36:28the Helsing organization almost, even though it's mostly
- 36:31mercenaries, which I kind of. Yeah, you can't.
- 36:35I kind of love because Integra is the only kind of really other
- 36:38main human character. And you, you don't ever see like
- 36:44goofiness or softness from her because she's the boss and
- 36:47she's. A boss bitch.
- 36:48From start to finish. There's Walter.
- 36:54Oh, there's also Walter. He's another great character.
- 36:58I kind of love him. I can't remember what his his
- 37:01nickname is. I'm just looking for it now.
- 37:04Yeah, so he's so good and he's like Integra's Butler, who you
- 37:11then find out is crazy, like a crazy strong assassin, which I
- 37:18can't again really love. And he's like an older guy as
- 37:21well. An Angel of death.
- 37:25The Angel of Death. As if the Angel of death rides
- 37:27again. Do they water?
- 37:29One of the most dramatic lines ever to be acted in an anime.
- 37:32So good. I found that crazy.
- 37:37No. Oh, I loved it.
- 37:40I loved that. No, I just, so what's this,
- 37:442001? I imagined I was 11 when this
- 37:46came out. So I can imagine like a 12/11/12
- 37:49year old saying, oh, so the Angel of death rides again, my
- 37:52lady? Kind of, yeah.
- 37:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But, but I kind of love that.
- 37:59There's part of me that's like, Oh no, give me the real gothic
- 38:02dramatic. Like if you can't say it in a
- 38:05show like Helsing, when can you say it?
- 38:08True, true you. Know what I mean?
- 38:11Like, I get that it is cringy in any other show, but in this it's
- 38:14perfect for the setting because it's a little bit Hammer Horror
- 38:18in its delivery at times. And I can imagine Walter being,
- 38:23you know, who's that famous Hammer Horror actor, you know
- 38:29the one. Tooty help a girl out.
- 38:31Are you in the chat? Tooty knows what I mean.
- 38:37Vincent Price. Oh, Vincent Price, the famous
- 38:41kook. I can imagine famous kook, I can
- 38:45imagine, I can imagine Walter being played by a Vincent Price
- 38:52type actor. Do you know what I mean?
- 38:54Like someone who's got like, who's like very classically
- 38:57trained. So I can see where you're coming
- 39:00from, but looking at the, it could be basically uses string
- 39:04and very impressive feats of like athleticism.
- 39:08I can't see him doing that because when I think of, I think
- 39:12of Vincent Price. I think of a very like, nobody
- 39:17looks like Vincent Price. It'd be impossible to stand
- 39:23double for. Yeah, it'd be like, do you know
- 39:27them horrible like the B films, B movie films where they have
- 39:31like someone who's too old doodle and stunts and they don't
- 39:33have any equivalent looking and it does a quick look where
- 39:36someone's wearing a dodgy wig for a second.
- 39:38It'll be one of them. I'll be so into it.
- 39:43OK, so here's here's my other question.
- 39:45If you were going to cast actors, As for like the main
- 39:48characters, who are you casting? So who are you casting for
- 39:52Walter then? If it's not Vincent Price, who's
- 39:58your fantasy? Fantasy live action.
- 40:03Race because. I'll tell you who my second
- 40:04person is for, for Walter Gary Oldman.
- 40:10Oh yeah, see, I was thinking to the guy that voices Solid Snake,
- 40:14but yeah, Gary Oldman. Oh, the guy who voices Solid
- 40:18Snakes? A good shout.
- 40:20Yeah, yeah, yeah, I. Can't remember what he's called
- 40:23now. I love you.
- 40:28Mr. Mr. Solid himself. Mr. Solid himself, I know who
- 40:32you. Mean David Hayter.
- 40:34Yeah, that's it. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:37Yeah, he'd be a good shout. Him or Gary Oldman would be
- 40:40great. Integra.
- 40:42And the, the I can only sometimes remember her name and
- 40:48the she's in Constantine, she plays Gabriel, She's the very
- 40:53asexual Tilda Swinton. Tilda Swinton.
- 40:56So I was. Thinking Tilda Swinton.
- 40:58Do you know the other person? I thought, who's the one who
- 41:00plays the very tall one in Game of Thrones and she's also
- 41:04Phasma. Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 41:06I don't know what name but it. Would be amazing, you know?
- 41:08Who? I mean, yes.
- 41:10Who plays what? Brianna of Brianna of Tarth,
- 41:13Yeah, Yeah, that's who I would also choose for an.
- 41:18Intellectual. Would you give her a long?
- 41:20Hair. Yeah, and I reckon she'd still
- 41:23look asexual and amazing. OK.
- 41:28And also, who's the other person who's in Lord of the Rings who I
- 41:31always get mixed up with? Tilda.
- 41:32Sweet. Cate Blanchett would also be a
- 41:34good shout if Tilda and I always get her and Tilda mixed up.
- 41:39And if Tilda's not around, let's call get Cate Blanchett and get
- 41:42her in the role. Who you?
- 41:47Who are you casting as Alucard? The guy who plays Lucifer in
- 41:55Lucifer, yes. Excellent shout.
- 42:00Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a good one.
- 42:03Yeah. Do you know who I'll find with
- 42:06my cast? Henry Cavill.
- 42:08Just because If you're going to get someone to be OP, get in
- 42:12Henry Cavill. He'll make it likable.
- 42:16I think he's too beefy and not he hasn't got to, he hasn't got
- 42:20a last turn it off. You think?
- 42:23Yeah, he hasn't got that slick. Needs to be a bit more slick.
- 42:28Slick talking. Charming.
- 42:30Yeah, I think he could. Be a bit too rough and rugged
- 42:33for you for an Alicard. Yeah, he needs to be like a bit
- 42:37sleek. A bit.
- 42:39Oh, who's your man? Who's in?
- 42:42Oh, is it the book? Who's the guy who's in like
- 42:51those Wes Anderson films? Adrian something Childs.
- 43:05I would get Adrian Childs. Is it bro?
- 43:12Is Adrian Brody? Yeah.
- 43:14You know. What I mean?
- 43:16I'm absolutely rubbish with actor actors names.
- 43:20Oh, I think he might be in the pianist as well.
- 43:22Oh, him. With the yeah, with the yeah,
- 43:26he's good. He's just like a tall.
- 43:29Very good face, yeah. Tall, lanky guy.
- 43:33Yeah, yeah, yeah, very tall, very lanky.
- 43:35I think he would actually do quite a good out of card as
- 43:37well. I mean I think he's also like
- 43:40massively out class Oscar winning.
- 43:46I'm doing this at live action anime film.
- 43:49Maybe as a kid who likes it. Maybe.
- 43:52And then Sarah's Victoria. I'd cast Scarlett Johansson.
- 43:56For the boobs. Because of the boobs, Yeah.
- 44:00And she's quite cute, yeah. I agree with that.
- 44:07OK. Yeah, yeah, nice, good casting.
- 44:12Get me? So we think.
- 44:15Let's get it made. I'll send the emails.
- 44:18You, me and nerdy up north. So will you be watching past
- 44:26episode 3? Are you going to finish it off
- 44:30or you do you think a couple like get you?
- 44:32Well you watched into episode 4, so you have already watched past
- 44:36episode 3. I think I'm up to six.
- 44:39So yeah, yeah. Well, join it.
- 44:44I really like it. I know it's it's, it is quite
- 44:47gory, quite violent, but it is a very switch off an away for me.
- 44:55Do you know what? Weirdly, me too.
- 44:56And I think it's because the violence is so like, it's
- 45:01graphic violence. It's not like hyper realistic.
- 45:05Do you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah.
- 45:07Yeah, yeah, it's cartoon violence at its best.
- 45:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, agree with that.
- 45:15But yeah, I think it's like it's one of them ones that you can't
- 45:18put on the background. Plus the violets are kind of
- 45:21like you kind of get numb to it after a little bit as well
- 45:26because you're like, oh, that that like a la carte gets
- 45:29riddled with bullets and constantly it's just like he's
- 45:33not even trying to dodge anyway. But.
- 45:36By the end of episode 1, he's Swiss cheese.
- 45:39Yeah, literally. It's to say, oh, my body parts
- 45:42fall off and everything regenerate, whatever.
- 45:48Amala God. At one point, he writes a
- 45:50message to Sarah's Victoria in his own blood, with a severed
- 45:54hand. Yeah, which drink is just saying
- 45:58drink my blood. Saying drink my blood if you
- 46:01want to live. Yeah.
- 46:07I love this anime. I.
- 46:09Do I really love it? It's so cheesy and it's so edgy,
- 46:13like in sometimes in a cringy way, but I just love it.
- 46:17I think it's a good time and if you like violence and you like
- 46:19gothic horror then Helsing I think is probably one of the
- 46:24better animes for you. Yeah, actually I did forget the
- 46:29mention as well. Do you know how we're talking
- 46:31about like the view, the English stereotype with all the accents
- 46:37and stuff that let's talk about the German stereotypes that are
- 46:41on here? Right, There is only one German
- 46:44stereotype in here, and it's bad.
- 46:48I know, but it's comically done because obviously, obviously the
- 46:52Nazis, right. So in in one of the episodes
- 46:55they're meant to do like a Recon thing where they're meant to be
- 46:58meeting in secret. And it's just like, what mode of
- 47:00transport would you take? I know a big Zeppelin.
- 47:06They've got over the top German. Accents notorious for stealth.
- 47:12Yeah, Zeppelin. Yeah.
- 47:15No, no, Let's see that coming. Yeah, they're trying to make a
- 47:19quick getaway and it's like, oh, let's go.
- 47:22Let's go to our emergency. Zeppelin, if you must.
- 47:27Go to Zeppelin. It is that.
- 47:29That's the accent as well. It is that's pain that's not
- 47:32painful at times. The other thing I can't love to
- 47:35say One last thing before we wrap up.
- 47:38You know how in in manga at the back, you always have like a
- 47:40message from the manga car and they do like a little like
- 47:43version of themselves and sometimes they're like a cute
- 47:45dog or it's their cat talking to you as like from the manga car.
- 47:50In this, it's the Baron Harkonnen from June, which is I
- 47:56know, so all of the like behind the scenes information that they
- 48:00give you at the back of the mango is it's all delivered to
- 48:02you by the Baron Harkonnen from June.
- 48:05But from from the sting, like the 1970s version, the 1970s,
- 48:10like the David Lynch version of June, it's that version of the
- 48:13Baron Harkonnen and it's wild. It doesn't make any sense, but I
- 48:18love it. And that's another reason to
- 48:19love this. Because clearly.
- 48:22I didn't know that. Back to June.
- 48:24I've never actually seen the original Dune as well.
- 48:28Have you not? No.
- 48:29It's weird, it's surreal. That's a good.
- 48:32It'd be a good Top Grumps one actually.
- 48:34To be fair, I remember a long time ago, you know, when the
- 48:37remix came out and I did ask me dad, I was like, oh, have you
- 48:41seen this before? You went yet?
- 48:42Shit, don't watch it. I actually don't love it as a
- 48:48version of G. Like I love it because for a
- 48:50while it was the only version of June, but it's not.
- 48:54I think the newest cinematic adaptations are better but like
- 48:58a long shot. Yeah.
- 49:01Yeah, yeah, but David, David Lynch puts his own stamp on it
- 49:05and makes it weird and that's fun.
- 49:08But yeah, so everything comes back to June.
- 49:10Go watch Helsing Ultimate. We recommend it.
- 49:13Sandworms. Happy nearly Halloween.
- 49:17What we got coming up next week, Chris.
- 49:21I don't know. Yes you do.
- 49:24We filmed it on Wednesday. Oh, next week, Oh yes, we've got
- 49:27the we've got an amazing guest next week and we are going to do
- 49:32Junji Idos Uzumaki, who's an amazing manga horror artist.
- 49:38And even if you don't watch the episode, have a look at some of
- 49:42these stuff if you do, because everything is so detailed and so
- 49:45amazing. The like imagery, which kind of
- 49:49shows off in this Man anime adaptation looks absolutely
- 49:53unreal. We talk about it with an artist
- 49:56next week, so we get that kind of prescribing.
- 49:59I'm not saying that you're not an artist, Phoebe, because I
- 50:00know you do art. No, but like I'm nothing
- 50:03compelled to. So we've got LJ Matthews who
- 50:06genuinely is like an actual very talented artist and off is
- 50:10inspired like some of their work she was saying is inspired by
