Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's almost Famas podcast. We're here with April sat down
- 0:09Speaker 2: and she said, let's make this quick. Why do you
- 0:12Speaker 2: want to make this quick?
- 0:14Speaker 3: Well, it's getting late and I have to catch a
- 0:17Speaker 3: flight tomorrow. So and I've been interviewing all night, so
- 0:21Speaker 3: I'm ready and I'm fired up. So I'm all warmed
- 0:25Speaker 3: up for you. So you eat to get the best
- 0:27Speaker 3: of me.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 0:30Speaker 2: How does it feel to be being interviewed all night
- 0:32Speaker 2: and to be so busy at ten forty?
- 0:38Speaker 3: Actually, when I did have a radio show with Cumulus,
- 0:42Speaker 3: I did work till midnight.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Every night.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I did the drive five home, so I would start
- 0:47Speaker 3: at five and end up. Of course, we'd go home
- 0:49Speaker 3: a little bit early, pre tape some of the endings,
- 0:52Speaker 3: and I'd be home in bed by eleven thirty.
- 0:54Speaker 4: But yeah, I like it. I'm cool, I'm down.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Well, we're here at the Bachelor Mansion.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Yes we are.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Feel good to be back.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Yeah, bittersweet. I had a great time here. It was
- 1:07Speaker 3: very healing.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It was.
- 1:11Speaker 3: An experience that for me I got to go back
- 1:16Speaker 3: and pick up things I had missed as a younger person.
- 1:20Speaker 4: I mean it was really healing.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It's been a theme tonight April where people have came
- 1:25Speaker 2: in and said a few different ways. You're the first
- 1:27Speaker 2: one that say healing. One person said they felt less alone.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Another said they kind of found their like tribe or
- 1:32Speaker 2: their people. Uh when they walked in the house. Why
- 1:35Speaker 2: do you use the word healing.
- 1:37Speaker 3: For Well, I'm a therapist, so I'm always looking at areas.
- 1:44Speaker 4: That I still need work on.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I mean, we're human beings and this is a lifetime process,
- 1:49Speaker 3: and so I don't think that healing is ever finished.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So when I came in, we got to stay in
- 1:57Speaker 3: these bunk beds. I'll give you an example. I had
- 2:00Speaker 3: never had the opportunity to go away to college. I
- 2:03Speaker 3: went to a local college. My mother had mental health issues.
- 2:07Speaker 3: I never got to be a freshman in college. So
- 2:11Speaker 3: when I got here and I was up there with
- 2:14Speaker 3: those girls and we were rowdy and I was crazy,
- 2:18Speaker 3: and they took those mics off us, I just went
- 2:22Speaker 3: I had so much fun, and it was like I
- 2:25Speaker 3: was given an opportunity to go back and catch up.
- 2:29Speaker 3: And there was other things that I had realized that
- 2:32Speaker 3: it was time to let go of Ralph my significant
- 2:35Speaker 3: other that I had been with for twenty years, that
- 2:37Speaker 3: he had passed away, that Gary. That interaction with Gary
- 2:43Speaker 3: gave me the opportunity to realize that it was time
- 2:46Speaker 3: for me to move on women issues that I thought
- 2:51Speaker 3: I struggled with alone. I realized that it was a
- 2:55Speaker 3: universal kind of feeling that I was going through and
- 2:59Speaker 3: many aspects of my life. Also, I saw people getting
- 3:04Speaker 3: triggered a lot. And what really helped me is to
- 3:09Speaker 3: know everybody, even at our age, has issues. Nobody's ever
- 3:15Speaker 3: completely healed. I mean, be afraid. If someone says they
- 3:19Speaker 3: don't need a counselor and they got it together, they're
- 3:22Speaker 3: a bat crazy run the other way, because we are
- 3:26Speaker 3: all constantly learning and struggling and catching things. And it's
- 3:31Speaker 3: like peeling a lemon, you know, just keep you know,
- 3:34Speaker 3: you keep peeling it and peeling it and peeling it
- 3:36Speaker 3: until you get to the center.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Well, this is obviously something that you aren't unfamiliar with.
- 3:42Speaker 2: This isn't something that you knew, uh, just because you
- 3:46Speaker 2: walked into the mansion. You've known this obviously for for
- 3:49Speaker 2: a long time. When you come across people, you're like, hey,
- 3:52Speaker 2: we're all working on something. We're all trying to figure
- 3:54Speaker 2: it out. So you come into the mansion, you meet
- 3:57Speaker 2: all these women, they're all beautiful. What's your first kind
- 4:01Speaker 2: of then reaction to once you kind of got comfortable
- 4:04Speaker 2: with them, Like what you were learning from being around
- 4:07Speaker 2: all of them?
- 4:07Speaker 3: Well, first of all, I've always had issues with women
- 4:11Speaker 3: because I've always First of all, I was raised as
- 4:14Speaker 3: an only child, so I really never had siblings. I
- 4:19Speaker 3: had a brother eight years younger than myself, but so
- 4:22Speaker 3: I really never had to share or really get along
- 4:26Speaker 3: with a lot of women. Second of all, it was
- 4:27Speaker 3: always very spoiled and loved and pampered, and I always
- 4:31Speaker 3: had everything.
- 4:32Speaker 4: So girls always picked on me. I got beat up.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I had lots of you know, bullying. They would put
- 4:38Speaker 3: fish in my locker, they would throw stones at me.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I was feature twirler, I was Miss Ohio and.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Blah blah blah blah blah.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So I have fear intrepidation of women. I much rather
- 4:51Speaker 3: work with men. Women scare the shit out of me
- 4:54Speaker 3: because they're vicious. They can be vicious, let's put it
- 4:58Speaker 3: that way. So when I I came here, I really
- 5:01Speaker 3: didn't know what to think. And I had seen some
- 5:04Speaker 3: of the episodes of the younger Bachelor shows, and I
- 5:08Speaker 3: saw those young girls going at each other like you know.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Little coyotes, baby coyotes.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Ah, And I was pleasantly surprised at how nice everybody
- 5:23Speaker 3: was and how I did really make some friends. So
- 5:26Speaker 3: that was another aspect of me going there are nice girls.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Oh, girls will like me. Oh. If I put myself out.
- 5:34Speaker 3: There, good things can happen in relationships with women. So
- 5:41Speaker 3: I really didn't know what to expect. I was leary
- 5:44Speaker 3: of working being here in a house with women.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And then when you mean, for the most part, it
- 5:49Speaker 2: sounds like most of these women are very kind.
- 5:51Speaker 3: They're very, very very nice. They only got nasty after
- 5:57Speaker 3: the show was over. That was enlightening to me, and
- 6:01Speaker 3: that so you can imagine the few things we touched already,
- 6:05Speaker 3: how much internally was going on within each of us,
- 6:09Speaker 3: whether they consciously know it or not. I'm a little
- 6:12Speaker 3: bit more conscious of it because of my career, but
- 6:17Speaker 3: I was watching all of it.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, So you mentioned something earlier you were in a
- 6:23Speaker 2: blasting went up to like the bunk rooms, right, something
- 6:26Speaker 2: that is not a secret, but pretty much most of
- 6:31Speaker 2: the people at stay in this house, men or women
- 6:33Speaker 2: when they're a contestant. You're living in a bunk and
- 6:36Speaker 2: at the start, you're definitely having somebody on the top,
- 6:38Speaker 2: you're definitely having somebody at the bottom. It's kind of
- 6:41Speaker 2: spread out all over. Who was the wildest, like, okay,
- 6:45Speaker 2: give us a picture of what this mansion look like.
- 6:49Speaker 4: I was the wildest.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Okay, wildest, Because the wildest I called the ladies that
- 6:55Speaker 3: took care of us outside that would make sure we
- 6:57Speaker 3: didn't go anywhere, I called them my ra And when
- 6:59Speaker 3: I got that mic off, and then I would, I
- 7:01Speaker 3: hate to say this, I would imitate.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Gary all night.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I had those women cracking up, and I'm dancing on
- 7:08Speaker 3: the lake in Indiana and the mud and I'm doing
- 7:12Speaker 3: the dance and you know, and I just had so
- 7:15Speaker 3: much freaking fun.
- 7:18Speaker 4: It was a blast.
- 7:19Speaker 3: And then I got as people got, you know, take
- 7:23Speaker 3: didn't get the rose, and they had to leave. I
- 7:25Speaker 3: took my bed and I pushed it against the other's
- 7:28Speaker 3: beds and we had a big California bed.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Across the whole room. Yeah, we put roses all over them.
- 7:34Speaker 3: And when we got a rose, so I really got
- 7:38Speaker 3: to be silly and funny. Yeah, and I just loved it,
- 7:41Speaker 3: and I like but I like to be silly and
- 7:43Speaker 3: funny anyhow. If I can make you laugh or somebody
- 7:46Speaker 3: laugh every day, then to me, it's a good day.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Oh it's great. So then cameras come off, they leave,
- 7:53Speaker 2: mikes come off. This place just gets even more fun
- 7:56Speaker 2: than it is. Even when the cameras.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Are outd in our room, everybody else went to bed.
- 8:01Speaker 2: What room were you in?
- 8:02Speaker 3: We were upstairs in that top room. It was the
- 8:06Speaker 3: big room with the nice bathroom. But I guess the
- 8:10Speaker 3: other ladies complained about us. At this point, I was
- 8:13Speaker 3: just happy I was here having the experience. Girls are
- 8:17Speaker 3: being nice to me. This is a pretty cool place.
- 8:20Speaker 3: The producers treat you like your gods. I mean, they
- 8:24Speaker 3: really treat you wonderful. I mean, they can't be any nicer.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I mean, so I was having the time of my life.
- 8:32Speaker 3: But you know, I guess other people didn't appreciate us
- 8:36Speaker 3: being up till four am.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I love it it is. It's literally a ct Purney house.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Nothing changes even at our age. Nothing change changes.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Every in one house. Let them have this common interest
- 8:51Speaker 2: in competing for romance, and good things.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Happen, aren't you glad? To hear that this will not
- 8:57Speaker 4: change when you get older.
- 8:58Speaker 2: No, so happy. Well, I have one really one final
- 9:12Speaker 2: question for you, April. So obviously the show's over, yes
- 9:18Speaker 2: it is. What does life look like now for you?
- 9:19Speaker 2: What are you excited about? Oh?
- 9:22Speaker 3: God, okay, right now, after seeing the show tonight, I'm
- 9:28Speaker 3: rethinking again. The real reason I went. I came to
- 9:33Speaker 3: The Bachelor was to find love. And when I saw
- 9:37Speaker 3: the connection with Gary and Teresa and I saw the
- 9:40Speaker 3: love that they did seem to have and all of
- 9:43Speaker 3: that happening, I was deeply immoved and impressed that the
- 9:48Speaker 3: Bachelor did work. I mean, they did seem to find
- 9:52Speaker 3: their person. So I kind of am I'm going to
- 9:57Speaker 3: revisit if I should try to date, because I'm not
- 10:02Speaker 3: dating right now.
- 10:03Speaker 4: I work part time. I work at a drug addiction center.
- 10:06Speaker 4: I do the groups.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Also, I'm still doing a few things for The Bachelor,
- 10:14Speaker 3: and I do a lot of social media. Now I'm
- 10:17Speaker 3: you know, hired someone to help me, and I'm kicking
- 10:20Speaker 3: ass and and I'm just I am rethinking everything, honestly, rethinking,
- 10:28Speaker 3: sitting back and seeing where this goes.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I once Scott Wise advice. I used to work on
- 10:33Speaker 2: the show. They said, use this to enhance the life
- 10:37Speaker 2: you already had, change your life completely.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's what I think I'm doing. I think
- 10:43Speaker 3: I have an audition on Tuesday for a podcast through them.
- 10:48Speaker 3: And but I also know that people can turn on
- 10:55Speaker 3: a dime. They could change their their mind in a minute.
- 10:58Speaker 3: So I'm staying grounded in what I have. I have
- 11:02Speaker 3: a beautiful home, I have a beautiful house. I'm in Florida.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I have a nice little job. I got a nice
- 11:07Speaker 3: gig going on. But I am going to pursue. I'm
- 11:11Speaker 3: going to take dance class. Well I was a dancer
- 11:13Speaker 3: of my whole life, but I'm going to go back
- 11:15Speaker 3: and do that. And falling in love. I don't know
- 11:18Speaker 3: how you guys do it, Like the swipe left and
- 11:21Speaker 3: right and shit and asking.
- 11:22Speaker 4: People out on you know, texting luck. Yeah, it's stupid.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I want to hear your voice. I mean, you're not
- 11:31Speaker 4: using any of your senses. You're using a finger.
- 11:34Speaker 2: It's all physical.
- 11:36Speaker 4: I want to hear you know.
- 11:37Speaker 3: I want to look in your eyes. I want to
- 11:39Speaker 3: hear that voice. I want to, you know, manipulate me.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Come on moves, you know, be nice, not oh baby,
- 11:45Speaker 3: or send me some stupid hearts. How long does it
- 11:48Speaker 3: take you to send a heart like you can do
- 11:50Speaker 3: one hundred and fifty women in two minutes? Come on,
- 11:54Speaker 3: I look stupid, April. Yeah, I mean like, come on, guys,
- 11:58Speaker 3: give me.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Your additions here.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Yeah. And girls don't.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Sleep with everybody right away? No wonder they don't want
- 12:04Speaker 3: to marry you. Why should they? Well, God almighty, I
- 12:08Speaker 3: mean women ruined it for themselves.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Well, this is your show. Your show is going to
- 12:15Speaker 2: be one that I would like to listen to. I
- 12:17Speaker 2: believe we could learn. We can laugh with you, and
- 12:20Speaker 2: we can be surprised with you and buy you, which
- 12:24Speaker 2: would be something.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and love yourself too. And I will say this
- 12:27Speaker 3: for anyone who is listening. You are perfect just the
- 12:31Speaker 3: way you are. You're human. You have done nothing wrong
- 12:35Speaker 3: no matter what has happened in your life. I really
- 12:37Speaker 3: believe it was meant to happen for you to gain
- 12:41Speaker 3: more insight about your truth and live your truth as
- 12:44Speaker 3: long as it doesn't harm anybody. And no matter what, yes,
- 12:48Speaker 3: we will harm people, but it's your intention.
- 12:52Speaker 4: People.
- 12:53Speaker 3: You will be judged inside of your heart, inside of
- 12:55Speaker 3: your own head by I didn't intend for that to happen.
- 12:59Speaker 3: There's a difference in being vicious and an intention. You know,
- 13:03Speaker 3: I have no intention to harm anyone.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Well, one of the beautiful parts about The Golden Bachelor
- 13:08Speaker 2: because I believe a lot of people are going to
- 13:10Speaker 2: benefit from the stories of the women, Gary's story, the
- 13:14Speaker 2: love that came from it. I think it's going to
- 13:16Speaker 2: be a really it has been, at least from my experience,
- 13:21Speaker 2: a lot of people have benefited from this airing on television.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I agree.
- 13:26Speaker 2: So I'm excited.
- 13:26Speaker 3: For years ago, I think we're breaking the glass ceiling.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I think there's women and men sitting alone wondering is
- 13:33Speaker 3: there anything left for them? And yes, there is something,
- 13:36Speaker 3: even if it's just to love yourself and to be
- 13:39Speaker 3: happy and to and to try new things. Whatever it is.
- 13:43Speaker 3: It doesn't even have to be dating. It could just
- 13:45Speaker 3: be living better, living larger. Don't lean in, fall in.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Ooh, that's worth ending on God bless don't lean in.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Don't lean in, baby, you fall in? What's that's the
- 14:00Speaker 3: worst that can happen? You've already been hurt before.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Well, I've got a wife. It's eleven o'clock at night.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I'm about to not lean in. I'm about to fall in.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Oh good, Yes it is, yes, it is. You can
- 14:12Speaker 3: use anything I have. I'm here to share.
- 14:15Speaker 2: This has been another episode of the Almost Famous podcast.
- 14:17Speaker 2: We have April here. It's eleven o'clock at night. We're
- 14:20Speaker 2: getting ready to go home. Thank you for joining us.

- 14:24Speaker 2: lot to us that you came tonight, that you're here,
