Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Mitch McCann: US Correspondent on Joe Biden's response to the comments on Puerto Rico
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Mitch McCann is a US correspondent, Mitch, Joe Biden sending
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Harris campaign into not quite meltdown, but certainly into
- 0:08Speaker 1: damage control.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, Good morning, Ryan. At this stage of
- 0:12Speaker 2: the campaign, it really isn't time to be making major
- 0:15Speaker 2: mistakes now. At that Trump rally here in New York,
- 0:18Speaker 2: which I attended on Sunday, the campaign received a huge
- 0:21Speaker 2: amount of backlash for the comedian who suggested that Porto
- 0:24Speaker 2: Rico is a floating island of garbage. So in some
- 0:28Speaker 2: ways that's a win politically for the Democrats. However, Joe
- 0:31Speaker 2: Biden has managed to create what has become a bit
- 0:34Speaker 2: of a pr mess over here when responding to those
- 0:36Speaker 2: comments on a Zoom call last night. This is what
- 0:39Speaker 2: the current president had to say in response to suggestions
- 0:43Speaker 2: that Porto Rico is a floating island of garbage.
- 0:45Speaker 3: They're good, decent, honorable people. The only garbage I see
- 0:49Speaker 3: floating out there is his supporters. His demonizational STIs I'm constable.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah, the only garbage I see out there are his supporters.
- 0:59Speaker 2: He's been criticized saying that the White House says he
- 1:02Speaker 2: was describing the racist language as garbage. Not Trump supporters,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and Kamala Harris has even distanced herself from those comments,
- 1:09Speaker 2: saying she disagrees with any criticism of people based on
- 1:12Speaker 2: who they vote for. Storming a teacup Ryan maybe, but
- 1:16Speaker 2: not helpful.
- 1:16Speaker 1: No, And I can remember the twenty sixteen election when
- 1:20Speaker 1: Hillary Clinton said this, and it was went down like
- 1:23Speaker 1: a cup of cold sick.
- 1:24Speaker 3: You could put half of Trump's supportors and doing what
- 1:27Speaker 3: I called the mass of Lauras.
- 1:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:32Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:32Speaker 1: It was funny to the supporters who were there, but
- 1:35Speaker 1: most Americans, particularly those swingers, felt that that was a
- 1:38Speaker 1: disgusting thing to say. So it'd be interesting to see
- 1:40Speaker 1: how this plays out. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has closed her
- 1:44Speaker 1: We'll not quite closed the campaign, but she's given her
- 1:45Speaker 1: closing address.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. She took to the same stage in
- 1:49Speaker 2: Washington last night where Democrats say Donald Trump and cited
- 1:52Speaker 2: those riots on the Capitol in twenty twenty one. She
- 1:55Speaker 2: called it her closing address. Her campaign sees the crowd,
- 1:59Speaker 2: it was seven twenty five thousand people. She said on
- 2:02Speaker 2: day one, if elected, Donald Trump would walk into the
- 2:04Speaker 2: Oval office with an enemy's list. When elected, I will
- 2:07Speaker 2: walk in with a to do lit and Trump's campaign
- 2:10Speaker 2: has responded by say Kamala Harris is lying, name calling
- 2:13Speaker 2: and clinging to the past. And with six days to
- 2:16Speaker 2: go now, Ryan, the polls are extremely close. Trump and
- 2:19Speaker 2: Harris are making their final swing through the Swing States.
- 2:22Speaker 2: At the moment, she's visiting three today. Will He'll be
- 2:25Speaker 2: in two match.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Thank you very much that much we can stateside for.
