• 1:15
Speaker 5: Got a pretty serious situation that developed in St. Albans
• 1:19
Speaker 5: earlier this morning. There is a shooting investigation. Deputy or
• 1:23
Speaker 5: police officers there were trying to execute a search warrant.
• 1:26
Speaker 5: We're going to go now and talk to Sheriff Joe Crawford. Sheriff,
• 1:30
Speaker 5: Good morning, welcome to the show.
• 1:32
Speaker 6: Good morning, Dave, thanks for having me, Thank you for.
• 1:34
Speaker 5: Being here, Thanks for being here on short notice. We
• 1:36
Speaker 5: just this happened a little after six am this morning
• 1:40
Speaker 5: at the B Street apartments in St. Albans. What can
• 1:42
Speaker 5: you tell us, Sheriff.
• 1:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, early this morning around fam the St. Albans Police
• 1:47
Speaker 6: Department was executing a search for warrant and an arrest
• 1:53
Speaker 6: warrant for the City of Charleston concerning one of their
• 1:56
Speaker 6: shootings this week. Immediately upon their entry, knocking and announcing
• 2:04
Speaker 6: and meet. Upon their entry, they started receiving heavy gun
• 2:08
Speaker 6: fire from the inside of the department that they were
• 2:11
Speaker 6: executing search one off.
• 2:14
Speaker 5: And this was the Saint Albans Police Department that was
• 2:17
Speaker 5: fired upon. Is that right?
• 2:18
Speaker 6: That is correct? Charleston p D was there with their detectives.
• 2:22
Speaker 6: They were the ones that obtained the search one had
• 2:24
Speaker 6: the arrest one. So due to the fact serious nature
• 2:28
Speaker 6: of the the incident there, they contacted Stall's PD and
• 2:33
Speaker 6: had their Special Response Team execute and search one.
• 2:37
Speaker 5: And I understand that you that that the police officers
• 2:40
Speaker 5: did not fire upon the residents. Is that right?
• 2:43
Speaker 6: That is correct. It's still early on, like I said,
• 2:46
Speaker 6: we will be processing the scene rest of the day
• 2:49
Speaker 6: and hopefully we'll have some more information available later on
• 2:52
Speaker 6: this afternoon. But uh, that's what we know so far.
• 2:55
Speaker 6: Like I said, they took heavy gunfire, did not return fire.
• 2:59
Speaker 6: I think it showed great restraint on those members of
• 3:04
Speaker 6: their SRT team, So you know, they're highly trained. They
• 3:09
Speaker 6: just did a professional job. So good thing is nobody
• 3:13
Speaker 6: was hurt and we're thankful for that. We're thankful we're
• 3:17
Speaker 6: able to go ahead and take them into custods. We've
• 3:20
Speaker 6: been called in to do the criminal side on this
• 3:22
Speaker 6: shooting incident. That's how we got involved. They notified us
• 3:25
Speaker 6: and requested us to come in and investigate this side
• 3:29
Speaker 6: of the criminal size since both of their agencies were involved.
• 3:32
Speaker 5: Do we know the identity of the person who was
• 3:34
Speaker 5: taken into custody yet?
• 3:37
Speaker 6: I don't have that information available right now, but it
• 3:39
Speaker 6: was apparently one of the charlest PD suspect that they
• 3:44
Speaker 6: had in their shooting, one of the shootings.
• 3:46
Speaker 5: Okay, and again this is an ongoing investigation. But the
• 3:50
Speaker 5: good news is is no one here was injured. The
• 3:52
Speaker 5: reports are that there was other people inside that apartment,
• 3:56
Speaker 5: but luckily no one was injured. And again this was
• 3:59
Speaker 5: a co operative effort. This was a from what I understand,
• 4:02
Speaker 5: it was a suspect wanted in a shooting in by
• 4:04
Speaker 5: the City of Charleston Police Department. Saint Albans Police Department
• 4:07
Speaker 5: was involved in this as well as the Canaw County
• 4:09
Speaker 5: Sheriff's Department. Hey, Sheriff, I appreciate you coming in on
• 4:12
Speaker 5: short notice, and we'll be expecting more details to come
• 4:15
Speaker 5: out a little bit later on today. Thanks a lot, Thanks.
• 4:18
Speaker 6: Dave for having me. Y'all take care and have a good.
• 4:20
Speaker 5: Day, all right, Sheriff Joe Crawford Again in that news
• 4:23
Speaker 5: as I said, about six six am this morning, officers
• 4:26
Speaker 5: were called to investigate. Well, what happened was they were
• 4:30
Speaker 5: trying to execute a search warm and this was the St.
• 4:33
Speaker 5: Albans Police Department, and this was a shooting that was
• 4:36
Speaker 5: that happened in the Charleston area with Charleston p D.
• 4:39
Speaker 5: But the Sheriff's officers were kind of the ones that
• 4:42
Speaker 5: kind of put all this thing together. That's why we
• 4:43
Speaker 5: had the Sheriff's department on here. And apparently as they
• 4:46
Speaker 5: were attempting to execute the warrant, shots were fired at
• 4:49
Speaker 5: police officers. Police officers did not fire back, and the
• 4:54
Speaker 5: suspect was taken into custody. We do expect further information
• 4:57
Speaker 5: to become available later today. Stories we posted at wv

Speaker 5: page for more information. We're just a couple of days
• 5:37
Speaker 5: away from the TBT, the basketball tournament with the Kyle
• 5:40
Speaker 5: Seaman Convention Center. Jared West had a little trouble hooking
• 5:43
Speaker 5: op with him yesterday. Hopefully we'll have him on the
• 5:45
Speaker 5: show today, the coach of TBT of the Best Virginia team.
• 5:49
Speaker 5: Of course, he's going to be coaching his son in
• 5:52
Speaker 5: the tournament, so we're going to talk to Coach West
• 5:54
Speaker 5: about that. Also, going back to the crime blotter, a
• 5:57
Speaker 5: very horrific story to Putnam County where there was a
• 6:02
Speaker 5: woman that was charged in the death of a sixteen
• 6:04
Speaker 5: day old baby. Now another man has been charged in
• 6:07
Speaker 5: that that information coming out yesterday. The prosecutor for Putnam County,
• 6:12
Speaker 5: Chris Raines, is going to join us to talk about
• 6:14
Speaker 5: that as well. So we got a lot to get
• 6:15
Speaker 5: to today. Let's lighten it up a little bit at
• 6:18
Speaker 5: least for a little while. I's bringing our good friend
• 6:20
  Speaker 5: Millie Snyder.
• 6:20
Speaker 7: How you doing, Melly, I'm doing great, and thank you
• 6:23
Speaker 7: for saying that. We're going to lighten it.
• 6:24
Speaker 5: Up just for a moment because we have Fortunately.
• 6:28
Speaker 7: This morning is very scary.
• 6:30
Speaker 5: Yeah it is. Yes, Happy National Hot Dog Day.
• 6:34
Speaker 7: I am so happy to hear that. I mean, it
• 6:36
Speaker 7: just fills my heart with joy. And if most people
• 6:40
Speaker 7: knew what they put into a hathorg, they would think twice,
• 6:44
Speaker 7: not about eating a second one. They would think about
• 6:48
Speaker 7: whether they want to eat the first one. But I'm
• 6:50
Speaker 7: just making that statement, okay, because see, I know so
• 6:53
Speaker 7: much about what's good for you and what's bad for you,
• 6:56
Speaker 7: because that's what I do. And you know, I want
• 6:59
Speaker 7: to tell you I'm working on podcasts here with your
• 7:03
Speaker 7: station and enjoying it very very much. But the thing
• 7:07
Speaker 7: that I am wanting to impart is the message that
• 7:12
Speaker 7: I have for so many of us, and that is
• 7:15
Speaker 7: to try and get a handle on why our weight
• 7:19
Speaker 7: is out of kilter. And by out of kilter, I
• 7:22
Speaker 7: mean that it's working against us rather than for us.
• 7:27
Speaker 7: One of the greatest compliments that I receive from people
• 7:30
Speaker 7: that I meet along the way, someone will say to me, so,
• 7:35
Speaker 7: how did you get involved with weight watchers? And to me,
• 7:38
Speaker 7: that is like magic to my ears, because I grew
• 7:42
Speaker 7: up as an obese person and I didn't make any
• 7:48
Speaker 7: real changes until I was twenty four years old, and
• 7:52
Speaker 7: I'm no longer that age, by the way, I'm now
• 7:54
Speaker 7: just twenty six and older time just.
• 7:56
Speaker 5: A little Well, what was it that made you want
• 7:58
Speaker 5: to make that change?
• 8:00
Speaker 7: Because it became my idea, And when I was ready,
• 8:04
Speaker 7: absolutely ready. I was also encouraged by the man that
• 8:09
Speaker 7: I was dating at the time, because he was he
• 8:11
Speaker 7: had a terrific, a horrific weight problem. And of course
• 8:15
Speaker 7: I was still in denial about my own I thought
• 8:18
Speaker 7: I just had big bones, and not that I had
• 8:21
Speaker 7: any that not that they were covered with any fat.
• 8:24
Speaker 5: They were just big bones, big meat on those bones.
• 8:26
Speaker 7: Yes, And so a lot of my hesitation was personal denial.
• 8:32
Speaker 7: But when I made him join, and the reason I
• 8:36
Speaker 7: made him join is because I was hoping that he
• 8:40
Speaker 7: would come back and say to me, you do not
• 8:44
Speaker 7: have to go. It's not going to work. And finally,
• 8:48
Speaker 7: after many, many many weeks of him putting it off
• 8:51
Speaker 7: and making lots of excuses, he joined. And I waited
• 8:55
Speaker 7: patiently for him to call me that evening to tell
• 8:58
Speaker 7: me what I knew he was going to say. And when
• 9:02
Speaker 7: I when my mother, because I lived with her at
• 9:04
Speaker 7: the time, when she handed me the receiver, he said
• 9:09
Speaker 7: to me, and by the way, he is Harvey. His
• 9:12
Speaker 7: name was Harvey Snyder. By the way, today, if Harvey
• 9:15
Speaker 7: had lived, would be his birthday. But he's been gone
• 9:18
Speaker 7: a long time. At any rate, he did not say
• 9:22
Speaker 7: what I wanted him to say. He said to me,
• 9:24
Speaker 7: you're going next week, and you know that falling in
• 9:27
Speaker 7: love stuff. I said, okay, But when I hung up
• 9:30
Speaker 7: the phone, I said many choice words that I cannot
• 9:33
  Speaker 7: repeat on.
• 9:34
Speaker 5: The air, Please don't.
• 9:35
Speaker 7: And the next week, from that evening until the following Thursday,
• 9:41
Speaker 7: September the eighth, when I actually joined White Watchers, I
• 9:45
Speaker 7: ate as though a famine was going to fall on
• 9:48
Speaker 7: Baltimore City, and you don't have to like it, you
• 9:51
Speaker 7: just eat it because it's not eating you. And when
• 9:55
Speaker 7: I joined, I was angry. I was angry at the
• 9:58
Speaker 7: world because it everyone else's fault. I never learned how
• 10:02
Speaker 7: to take responsibility for my own behavior. And I want
• 10:06
Speaker 7: to address the fact that so many people who have
• 10:10
Speaker 7: a weight problem, they're looking at drugs to fix it,
• 10:13
Speaker 7: but until they understand how they learned their eating habits
• 10:17
Speaker 7: and from where they came. Mother, father, sister, neighbor, So
• 10:23
Speaker 7: many of us in West Virginia live next door to
• 10:25
Speaker 7: our grandmother and our first aunt and our second uncle,
• 10:29
Speaker 7: and their eating habits are the ones that are duplicated
• 10:34
Speaker 7: and practiced day in and day out, and we develop
• 10:40
Speaker 7: our weight problem by what we see and what we
• 10:44
Speaker 7: learn and what is made available. We make sure that
• 10:47
Speaker 7: we send our children off with a good breakfast. What
• 10:51
Speaker 7: is a good breakfast as opposed to a bad breakfast?
• 10:54
Speaker 7: I mean, there's nothing wrong with toast and a poached egg,
• 10:58
Speaker 7: but so many families don't do it that way. They
• 11:03
Speaker 7: take that egg and they fry it and lar it
• 11:04
Speaker 7: along with the bacon, that the fat that comes off
• 11:07
Speaker 7: of that, with fried potatoes. They're making sure that we
• 11:10
Speaker 7: have a good breakfast.
• 11:11
Speaker 5: Or they do. You know some sort of cereal which
• 11:14
Speaker 5: is loaded with sugar, which is your natural enemy.
• 11:17
Speaker 7: Absolutely it is. It is my natural enemy on the
• 11:22
Speaker 7: Mediterranean lifestyle. But actually sugar should be more of an
• 11:26
Speaker 7: enemy to all of us because it's causing a lot
• 11:29
  Speaker 7: of havoc.
• 11:29
Speaker 5: I saw something, and I don't have the exact statistic
• 11:32
Speaker 5: in front of me, but you probably saw the story too.
• 11:34
Speaker 5: Is reported I think last week that one out of
• 11:37
Speaker 5: every four young people. And if I'm getting this wrong,
• 11:40
Speaker 5: somebody can correct me. But I think it was one
• 11:42
Speaker 5: out of every four young people is considered to be
• 11:45
Speaker 5: pre diabetic. Yes, one out of every four young people.
• 11:48
Speaker 5: This is not absolutely people my age or your age.
• 11:50
Speaker 5: We're talking about kids and that teens.
• 11:54
Speaker 7: And that wreaks havoc with their health, their ability to
• 11:57
Speaker 7: grow into a normal body and live the way they're
• 12:01
Speaker 7: supposed to, because diabetes is nothing to make light of.
• 12:07
Speaker 7: And I grew up in that whole atmosphere. My father,
• 12:11
Speaker 7: who was the mentor who made me fat. I was
• 12:14
Speaker 7: a normal sized kid. I actually have pictures to prove
• 12:17
Speaker 7: up at age five and six. Then I was a
• 12:20
Speaker 7: normal sized kid. And then my father took me under
• 12:23
Speaker 7: his wing and I learned how to eat from him,
• 12:26
Speaker 7: and eat we did. And that's one of the things
• 12:29
Speaker 7: that I'm sharing in my story because I want people
• 12:32
Speaker 7: to understand. I just didn't wake up one day and say, oh,
• 12:36
Speaker 7: I think I'm going to be fat. That's not the
• 12:38
Speaker 7: way it happens. I lived what I learned, and in
• 12:43
Speaker 7: my podcast, I'm telling that story. And my Mediterranean Mindset
• 12:48
Speaker 7: group that meets over at the Goodwill building on the
• 12:52
Speaker 7: West Side of Charleston. It's right up by the bridge,
• 12:56
Speaker 7: so it's very easy to find. We meet there Thursday
• 12:58
Speaker 7: morning at ten am, and we have people who are very,
• 13:02
Speaker 7: very successful learning and living the Mediterranean lifestyle.
• 13:07
Speaker 5: Well, tell us about this podcast because we have to
• 13:09
  Speaker 5: wrap it up.
• 13:10
Speaker 7: Well, he's not ready to be published yet.
• 13:11
Speaker 5: You've been working on it. Oh, yes, with Matt Guitar Murphy.
• 13:14
Speaker 5: Our staff here great.
• 13:16
Speaker 7: You have a great staff here, Your studios are beautiful,
• 13:20
Speaker 7: and I'm just enjoying the experience. But we're a long
• 13:23
Speaker 7: way from getting it on the air. But what I'm
• 13:25
Speaker 7: doing is telling my story and I just want people
• 13:30
Speaker 7: to know that drugs are not the answer, because you
• 13:33
Speaker 7: have to change your mind about your body. And it
• 13:37
Speaker 7: took me twenty four years to get to that place
• 13:40
Speaker 7: in my life. But I took every diet pill known
• 13:43
Speaker 7: to man and beast, and every drug medication that was
• 13:48
Speaker 7: advertised on television or in magazines, and none of them
• 13:51
Speaker 7: worked until I wanted to be different, and that happened
• 13:57
Speaker 7: in nineteen sixty six.
• 13:58
Speaker 5: Been going strong ever since.
• 14:00
Speaker 7: And I hope four years to come.

Speaker 5: indicted on five felony accounts in connection with the death
• 16:54
Speaker 5: of their sixteen day old baby. The accounts include child abuse,
• 16:58
Speaker 5: child neglect resulting in debt, malicious assault, and the death
• 17:01
Speaker 5: of a child by a parent, and murder. Prosecuting attorney

Speaker 5: for Putnam Counties Chris Raine. She joined us now. Chris,
• 17:06
Speaker 5: good morning, and welcome to the show.
• 17:08
Speaker 3: Good morning, Dave, thank you for having me on.
• 17:10
Speaker 5: Thank you for being here. And I want to start
• 17:12
Speaker 5: by saying that you have to be very careful. You
• 17:15
Speaker 5: know what it is that you say in this case,
• 17:17
Speaker 5: but it's definitely this a story I guess just hit yesterday.
• 17:21
Speaker 5: So I want to be respectful of you and what
• 17:23
Speaker 5: it is you're allowed to say and what you can't say.
• 17:25
Speaker 5: But can you take us through the timeline of this
• 17:28
Speaker 5: case as best you can realize the sensitive nature of
• 17:33
  Speaker 5: the case.
• 17:34
Speaker 3: Sure last year, I believe on June fourth, twenty twenty four,
• 17:41
Speaker 3: Brooke and Jacob Kessler had their baby. From very early on,
• 17:47
Speaker 3: Brooke was experiencing signs of postpartum, so much so that
• 17:53
Speaker 3: they decided to let the paternal grandmother take care of
• 17:57
Speaker 3: the baby for about a week of its short life,
• 18:01
Speaker 3: just because she was not really showing a lot of
• 18:03
Speaker 3: interest in the baby.
• 18:05
  Speaker 12: She was also.
• 18:05
Speaker 3: Frustrated with her lack of being able to burp the
• 18:11
Speaker 3: baby and things like that early on. When the baby
• 18:16
Speaker 3: was injured, that was about June twentieth, so, like you said,
• 18:21
Speaker 3: it was she was sixteen days old. The police were
• 18:25
Speaker 3: involved immediately they spoke to the mother Brooks. She indicated
• 18:30
Speaker 3: that she was frustrated with her efforts as a mother
• 18:34
Speaker 3: and she may have squeezed the baby harmed the baby,
• 18:38
Speaker 3: because not only did the baby have some severe head trauma,
• 18:43
Speaker 3: but she also had broken ribs and a broken arm.
• 18:47
Speaker 3: So Brooke was arrested and placed in custody shortly after
• 18:51
Speaker 3: June twentieth. I believe she's been in custody since about
• 18:53
Speaker 3: June twenty first. The father has been giving statements to
• 18:59
Speaker 3: the leaf for the last year, and we've noticed that
• 19:04
Speaker 3: there were inconsistent statements with what his recitation of the
• 19:11
Speaker 3: events were, as well as how this story led to
• 19:16
Speaker 3: the baby's injuries. And his last statement to the police
• 19:20
Speaker 3: was made a couple months ago, and it was significant
• 19:25
Speaker 3: enough for us to go forward with charges against him
• 19:28
Speaker 3: as well. So Brooke was originally indicted by Putnam County
• 19:33
Speaker 3: grand jury in November of twenty twenty four, but just
• 19:38
Speaker 3: this week, our most recent grand jury indicted both the
• 19:43
Speaker 3: parents in relation to this death of this sweet little baby.
• 19:47
Speaker 5: Talking again to the prosecuted attorney there out of Putnam County,
• 19:51
Speaker 5: Chris Rains, So, you said that there were some inconsistent
• 19:55
Speaker 5: statements in continuation in question the father in this case,
• 20:02
Speaker 5: I'm presuming you mean by that that the stories just
• 20:04
Speaker 5: weren't adding up. He was saying something at one time
• 20:07
Speaker 5: and he comes back a week letters to something else
• 20:08
Speaker 5: or something like. Is that what you mean by that?
• 20:11
Speaker 3: Yes, that's correct. Not only in what their knowledge of
• 20:15
  Speaker 3: the injuries were.
• 20:16
  Speaker 12: But just.
• 20:19
Speaker 3: Some interviews. He would indicate that he would see his
• 20:24
Speaker 3: wife shake the baby early on in the baby's life,
• 20:30
Speaker 3: and then toward it got worse and worse until the
• 20:35
Speaker 3: third statement, he indicated that she shook her violently about
• 20:39
Speaker 3: seven to eight times during during the time that she
• 20:43
Speaker 3: was at home with him. Now, again, remember that the
• 20:47
Speaker 3: baby wasn't even home with them for one week during
• 20:50
Speaker 3: the entire two weeks of her life, for two weeks
• 20:53
Speaker 3: and two days, So seven to eight violent shakes of
• 20:56
Speaker 3: this baby is something that should have been reported. But
• 21:01
Speaker 3: it was also learned that uh, he who was a
• 21:07
Speaker 3: corrections officer, had been abusing a prescription to adderall and
• 21:14
Speaker 3: was actually coming off of that adderall days before the
• 21:19
Speaker 3: baby was injured and died.
• 21:23
Speaker 5: So again, Chris, where where where is he now? And
• 21:26
Speaker 5: all this because she's been I'm assuming the mother's been
• 21:28
Speaker 5: incarcerated the whole time, Is that right?
• 21:30
  Speaker 12: She is?
• 21:31
Speaker 3: She has been. He has been incarcerated since I believe
• 21:34
Speaker 3: May seventh or May eighth, and has been. I think
• 21:39
Speaker 3: he's in a different facility than Brooke is. And also
• 21:44
Speaker 3: being a former corrections officer, I believe that he is
• 21:48
Speaker 3: in a different level of custody than than everybody else
• 21:53
Speaker 3: for his own safety.
• 21:54
Speaker 5: Yeah, for his own safety. And we do want to
• 21:56
Speaker 5: point out that everyone is innocent until until proven guilty,
• 21:58
Speaker 5: and we will see you will and this will all
• 22:01
Speaker 5: come out in the trial. What is the what's the timeline?
• 22:03
Speaker 5: What happens next? Chris?
• 22:06
Speaker 3: So, we have had some some trial dates set in
• 22:10
Speaker 3: Brooks case. Obviously, this indictment will what we call it
• 22:15
Speaker 3: the superseding indictment, so it will be start all over
• 22:20
Speaker 3: as a as a new case. And usually in Putnam County,
• 22:24
Speaker 3: we we set our cases pretty quickly. So I would
• 22:28
Speaker 3: be anticipating a late fall or an early maybe winter
• 22:35
Speaker 3: trial for these two should they decide to go to
• 22:39
Speaker 3: trial in this case.
• 22:40
Speaker 5: And I guess they have the right or whatever to decide.
• 22:44
Speaker 5: You know, what they're plea is going to be. Uh,
• 22:46
Speaker 5: I mean, you know, whatever, whatever they decide to do.
• 22:48
Speaker 5: You know, Chris, you've been You've been in in this
• 22:51
Speaker 5: field for a long time. But these cases never never
• 22:55
Speaker 5: get easy, do they.
• 22:57
Speaker 3: No, absolutely not. This is my twenty fifth year as
• 22:59
Speaker 3: a prosecutor, and you know, I've seen lots of terrible
• 23:04
Speaker 3: things that human beings do to others, but the ones
• 23:08
Speaker 3: that are done to children hit the hardest. This is
• 23:11
Speaker 3: my second baby murder case. And you just don't forget
• 23:18
Speaker 3: these injuries, You don't forget these pictures. You just don't
• 23:22
Speaker 3: forget how small and and vulnerable these children are. So
• 23:27
Speaker 3: even though I consider myself a hard and prosecutor, these
• 23:33
Speaker 3: really are like a gut punch.
• 23:34
Speaker 5: I mean. And again, we're talking about a sixteen day
• 23:37
Speaker 5: old baby in this case, and as you pointed out
• 23:40
Speaker 5: at one point, and it is alleged in this case
• 23:42
Speaker 5: that the mother was suffering from postpartum, that the grandmother
• 23:47
Speaker 5: actually had the child for a number of days.
• 23:50
Speaker 3: Yes, and I've talked with that grandmother. I really feel
• 23:55
Speaker 3: terrible for her because I think she developed a bond
• 23:58
Speaker 3: with this baby. Maybe that her mother and maybe even
• 24:01
Speaker 3: her father didn't develop with this baby, but that baby
• 24:05
Speaker 3: was loved during the time that she was born, and
• 24:08
Speaker 3: I do believe that maybe the parents did have some
• 24:11
Speaker 3: good times with her, but they were having trouble overcoming
• 24:16
Speaker 3: new parenthood, the lack of sleep. Like I said that
• 24:22
Speaker 3: there was an adderall addiction that he was coming off of,
• 24:28
Speaker 3: and perhaps some anxiety or some aggression during that time.
• 24:34
Speaker 3: So these are all things for These are all hard
• 24:38
Speaker 3: things for sober young parents anyway. But then add on
• 24:44
Speaker 3: the mental illness of postpartum and then the frustration. But
• 24:49
Speaker 3: make no mistake about it that this baby was not
• 24:52
Speaker 3: just neglected. She was rutalized. She had numerous brain injuries.
• 25:00
Speaker 3: I think ten broken ribs, a broken arm. So this
• 25:05
Speaker 3: was not one time shaking baby situation. This this baby
• 25:11
Speaker 3: was was beaten or something to cause such severe injuries
• 25:19
Speaker 3: that shaking it wouldn't just cause.
• 25:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, well, Chris Rains prosecuted. They're in Putnam County. I
• 25:26
Speaker 5: appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to be
• 25:27
Speaker 5: these These cases never get easier for folks to do
• 25:30
Speaker 5: what you do for a living. And it's very difficult
• 25:33
Speaker 5: to even hear the story. It's very difficult to talk
• 25:36
Speaker 5: about it. And as you you know you you have
• 25:38
Speaker 5: to be very careful what you're allowed to say as well.
• 25:41
Speaker 5: And and I reached out to you last night when
• 25:43
Speaker 5: I first heard the story. And I appreciate the work,
• 25:46
Speaker 5: the work that you and the others have done in
• 25:48
Speaker 5: this case, and so you'll have to keep us updated.
• 25:51
Speaker 5: I appreciate you being here thanks.
• 25:52
Speaker 3: A lot, Yes, sir, thank you for this platform.
• 25:54
Speaker 5: Yeah, Chris Rains, prosecuted attorney in Putnam County. Yeah, this story.
• 25:59
Speaker 5: And and I vaguely, you know, remember the story of
• 26:01
Speaker 5: the mother. But then it hit yesterday afternoon that the
• 26:04
Speaker 5: father has also been implicated in this story. And look,
• 26:07
Speaker 5: you know, I'm a you know me. You've listened to
• 26:10
Speaker 5: me for the last five years on this radio station.
• 26:12
Speaker 5: I've done this for thirty seven years total. I love
• 26:16
Speaker 5: to laugh, I love the joke. And you know, I
• 26:18
Speaker 5: don't take people that work with me to tell you,
• 26:20
Speaker 5: I don't take a whole lot of stuff seriously. But
• 26:22
Speaker 5: in this particular case, I mean, you're talking about a
• 26:24
Speaker 5: sixteen day old baby here, and the mother did not
• 26:31
Speaker 5: have the kid of the baby for a few of
• 26:35
Speaker 5: those days because the grandmother had custody or I guess
• 26:40
Speaker 5: it was just keeping the baby. And I thought it
• 26:42
Speaker 5: was interesting what Prosecutor Rain said there that how much
• 26:45
Speaker 5: empathy she had for the grandmother in this situation, because
• 26:50
  Speaker 5: it's just it's it's a horrible case all around, and
• 26:56
Speaker 5: I just well, you know, it's a horrible case all around.

• 27:34
Speaker 5: most of us are keeping an eye on the two
• 27:37
Speaker 5: local teams, if you will, Best Virginia and heard that
• 27:40
Speaker 5: Best Virginia representing West Virginia University and heard that with Marshall.
• 27:45
Speaker 5: And we've got Jared West on the show who is
• 27:48
Speaker 5: running a basketball camp now as we speak. So we
• 27:51
Speaker 5: had a little trouble hooking up with him yesterday. We
• 27:53

• 27:55
Speaker 5: He's coaching and he's actually coaching his son, Jared West Junior,
• 27:59
Speaker 5: who played for Marshall. But he's going he's going to
• 28:01
Speaker 5: play for Best Virginia because well, yeah, I mean opportunity.
• 28:04
Speaker 5: He played for his dad. He talked about the sports

Speaker 5: Line a couple of nights ago, So we're going to
• 28:07
Speaker 5: talk to him coming up a little bit later on.
• 28:09
Speaker 5: But our big story again this morning, as we told
• 28:11
Speaker 5: you at the top of the show, and I haven't
• 28:13
Speaker 5: had a chance to check the website. If it's not
• 28:15
Speaker 5: on the website, it soon will be that there was
• 28:19
Speaker 5: an officers fired upon situation in Saint Albans around six
• 28:22
Speaker 5: am this morning. Officers were attempting to serve a search
• 28:27
Speaker 5: warrant on a person there. This person was wanted for
• 28:30
Speaker 5: it led shooting in the city of Charlestown and Saint
• 28:34
Speaker 5: Albans Police along with detectors from the city of Charleston
• 28:36
Speaker 5: were on the scene. Uh the person inside and there
• 28:39
Speaker 5: were other people inside this this apartment allegedly, well he didn't.
• 28:43
Speaker 5: Allegedly he did. There was fire exchange. He opened up
• 28:46
Speaker 5: the fire he opened fire on the officers. The officers
• 28:48
Speaker 5: did not fire back, and he was taken into custody.
• 28:51
Speaker 5: We had to Sheriff Joe Crawford on a little bit
• 28:53
Speaker 5: earlier talking about that they were kind of facilitating the
• 28:55
Speaker 5: whole thing, being the Sheriff's Department here in Knawa County.
• 28:58
Speaker 5: But again there were official from the City of Charleston,
• 29:01
Speaker 5: from the detective with the Charleston Police Department, and also
• 29:04
Speaker 5: from the city of Saint Albans involved in that as well.
• 29:06
Speaker 5: That incident happened around six am this morning, could have
• 29:09
Speaker 5: turned out a whole lot worse. The person inside again
• 29:13
Speaker 5: did fire up on officers. Officers did not return fire,
• 29:15
Speaker 5: but they were able to take him into custody. We'll
• 29:18
Speaker 5: have full details as they become available throughout the day.

Speaker 12: the most important we got ten great guys who are
• 33:14
Speaker 12: locked in and ready to represent the state, raid to
• 33:16
Speaker 12: represent the WVU. So very very good to yesterday and
• 33:20
Speaker 12: just got to continue to build and get ready for Friday.
• 33:22
Speaker 5: Talk about that whole process of getting these guys in,
• 33:25
Speaker 5: because again, it's just not like an NBA or even
• 33:27
Speaker 5: a college you know, when you uh a college program,
• 33:30
Speaker 5: when you've had the guys throughout the year and you've
• 33:32
Speaker 5: been watching what they eat and you've been watching, you know,
• 33:34
Speaker 5: watching them in the gym and that sort of thing.
• 33:36
Speaker 5: You got guys coming in from all over and you
• 33:38
Speaker 5: got ten guys and basically you got a couple of
• 33:40
Speaker 5: days to say, okay, guys, let's pull this thing together.
• 33:43
Speaker 12: You're exactly right and getting the guy like we told,
• 33:47
Speaker 12: we had Eric and he got a try with the
• 33:49
Speaker 12: Mammy Heat. So it's you're reaching out to people and
• 33:53
Speaker 12: you just don't know if you're going to get them.
• 33:54
Speaker 12: And then the beauty of it is these are professionals.
• 33:59
Speaker 12: When we put together the team, I stressed I wanted
• 34:02
Speaker 12: to have some adults in the room and professionals, no distractions.
• 34:05
Speaker 12: So these guys came in and they're in pretty good
• 34:08
Speaker 12: shape already. Now it's just a matter of, you know,
• 34:11
Speaker 12: putting together some principals, some cores, uh, the buy in
• 34:15
Speaker 12: to what we want to do, to be comforted in
• 34:18
Speaker 12: your skin and brace your role and put the team first.
• 34:21
Speaker 12: And we have from from the last two days, we've
• 34:24
Speaker 12: done a pretty good job of seeing that from these guys.
• 34:26
Speaker 12: But they're they're true professionals. So that that's the biggest
• 34:29
Speaker 12: a difference between dealing with high school of college. Got
• 34:31
Speaker 12: these guys and professionals. They take care of their body
• 34:33
Speaker 12: and they're about their business.
• 34:35
Speaker 5: Talk about some of the players that you've got on
• 34:37
  Speaker 5: the team.
• 34:39
Speaker 12: Oh, we got a pretty good group. Obviously, we got
• 34:41
Speaker 12: Katy Key was the first, the first the first guy
• 34:45
Speaker 12: at that signed obviously played a couple of years ago.
• 34:47
Speaker 12: Is his dog on defense, brings great intensity, so we're
• 34:52
Speaker 12: gonna be relying on him. Little Jared my son, he
• 34:56
Speaker 12: he came over from from from Herd that obviously because
• 34:59
Speaker 12: I'm coaching, So you're putting in Key together two very
• 35:03
Speaker 12: very good defensive guards. They like the pressure and that
• 35:06
Speaker 12: type of thing. James Reese played at North Texas, which
• 35:11
Speaker 12: and he actually played on that Mean Green team that
• 35:13
Speaker 12: I think he went to the championship two or three
• 35:15
Speaker 12: years ago, so that was a big, big addition to us.
• 35:17
  Speaker 12: He's a he's a six to four combo guard that
• 35:20
Speaker 12: can shoot it, that that defends well. We Wesley Harris, everybody.
• 35:24
Speaker 12: Those are from W sixty nine Wing Active, Live Body.
• 35:29
Speaker 12: Three very very big pick ups we've had in the
• 35:31
Speaker 12: last three days. Tobya Connie at Dwardo and Trey Mitchell
• 35:36
Speaker 12: all w guys. Fans will know those guys. They will
• 35:40
Speaker 12: be very very big pieces to the puzzle trade with
• 35:44
Speaker 12: leaning on him there to provide some scoring for us
• 35:47
Speaker 12: and told he had a great practice yesterday. Let me
• 35:50
Speaker 12: see what miss Jay Sanders who MBC Fairmount State. People
• 35:56
Speaker 12: will know a lot he scored I think over in
• 35:57
Speaker 12: two thousand point to the NBC. He's a six four
• 35:59
Speaker 12: shooting he really lights lighted us from the outside. Who
• 36:04
Speaker 12: else jd oh, yeah, I mean the last to a
• 36:06
Speaker 12: will boy, he's uh MBC. Guys who know him. He
• 36:10
Speaker 12: was with Notre Dame College in the NBC and he
• 36:13
Speaker 12: won the Accomplience Championship with with coach Tim Kenning t
• 36:16
Speaker 12: K who's now the head coach at Farremont. So Will
• 36:19
Speaker 12: is a big guy sixteen that he maybe about six
• 36:23
Speaker 12: a six now, but very very skilled. And then J. D. Weatherford,
• 36:30
Speaker 12: he played at Ohio State sixty six, kind of pushing
• 36:35
Speaker 12: him in the in the in the mindset of of
• 36:37
Speaker 12: of a Kevin Jones type frame player. So he's a
• 36:41
Speaker 12: very very good guy, veteran. So that's the ten we have.
• 36:45
Speaker 12: We're trying to get these guys, you know, to mess
• 36:47
Speaker 12: and blend. And like I said, yesterday was very very
• 36:51
Speaker 12: good for us to put put some things together. But
• 36:55
Speaker 12: our defense, if our offense could ever match our defense,
• 36:58
Speaker 12: was gonna be scary. Right now, our defense is way
• 37:01
  Speaker 12: ahead of office.
• 37:02

• 37:15
Speaker 5: conducting your campbell. They'll let you get back to it,
• 37:17
Speaker 5: but I do have to ask you about the opportunity
• 37:19
Speaker 5: to coach your coach your son. I mean you've been
• 37:22
Speaker 5: coaching him his whole life, right.
• 37:25
Speaker 12: Oh, yes, it's funny. The last time I coached him,
• 37:30
Speaker 12: we won the state championship at the CHARLESA Civic Center.
• 37:34
Speaker 12: So and I never thought I would get a chance
• 37:36
Speaker 12: to coach him again. And then this opportunity came up.
• 37:39
Speaker 12: And obviously he's with he was with herd that and
• 37:43
Speaker 12: we were looking to get Eric Stevenson. And once Eric
• 37:45
Speaker 12: got the try with the Mammy heat John Flowers, general manager,
• 37:50
Speaker 12: he was like, we need we need little Jared. We
• 37:52
Speaker 12: got to get little Jared. He looked at me and
• 37:54
Speaker 12: I said, well, buddy, that you're gonna have to do
• 37:56
Speaker 12: that sale that that and John did a great job
• 37:59
Speaker 12: recruiting Jared. Jared. You know, he's he had four great
• 38:03
Speaker 12: years at Marshall and he loves John Elmore and Ron
• 38:06
Speaker 12: I mean, Kabon, those are all these guys. He was
• 38:08
Speaker 12: actually visiting in Huntington a couple weeks ago. So uh.
• 38:12
Speaker 12: And so then there's a lot of layers to the
• 38:14
Speaker 12: w U Marshall West family dynamic. Yeah exactly, I'll just
• 38:19
Speaker 12: I'll leave it. Yes, there's a lot of layers to it.
• 38:23
Speaker 12: So it was a it was a tough sale. But
• 38:26
Speaker 12: once Jared realized that that that float John and Greg
• 38:29
Speaker 12: the assistant GM, and I'm coaching, obviously, it made it
• 38:33
Speaker 12: a lot. It was a tough decision, but it made
• 38:35
Speaker 12: it the easier decision since I'm coaching. But I told Floe,
• 38:39
Speaker 12: if we get Little Jared, uh, it'll be dumb for us.
• 38:42
Speaker 12: We got to construct the roster to more of a
• 38:45
Speaker 12: defensive minded because with Little Jared and Keaty, they're two
• 38:48
Speaker 12: of the two of the top on ball defenders that
• 38:52
Speaker 12: that were in college basketball in the last twenty years.
• 38:54
Speaker 12: So you know, we're gonna use use what we have
• 38:57
Speaker 12: to our advantage and be a defense, a mind of team,
• 39:00
Speaker 12: but also be able to score. So, uh, it was
• 39:03
Speaker 12: a blessing. Yesterday was Yesterday was great to be on
• 39:05
Speaker 12: the sideline coaching while he was on the floor and
• 39:09
Speaker 12: you just you missed some of his leadership, his and tangibles. Uh,
• 39:13
Speaker 12: it was. It was great to be back out there
• 39:15
Speaker 12: on the floor weapons. So and he's excited. Uh, like
• 39:18
Speaker 12: I said, back to the layers of the WV DOT.
• 39:21
Speaker 12: That's the first time he's had WV on his chest.
• 39:25
Speaker 12: It was a little weird for him yesterday. I'm not
• 39:27
  Speaker 12: gonna lie.
• 39:28
Speaker 5: I imagine him like looking down at it coaching and
• 39:30
Speaker 5: what is this on me? What is this on me?
• 39:33
  Speaker 3: Man?
• 39:33
Speaker 5: Get this off me?
• 39:35
Speaker 12: Well, I tell you the layers. We can have a
• 39:37
Speaker 12: cold hour of conversation about it. But his locker, so
• 39:40
Speaker 12: my closet is full of WU. His closet is full
• 39:44
Speaker 12: of Marshall. Once he went to Marshall, mind kind of merged.
• 39:47
Speaker 12: But this was the first time him wearing it. But
• 39:50
Speaker 12: like I said, the guys Katy especially that they've done
• 39:54
Speaker 12: a great job of embracing him, bringing him into the fold.
• 39:58
Speaker 12: Because Jared is wired like W. He's a Yvonne Javon Carter,
• 40:05
Speaker 12: He's a dog on the He's wired to you know.
• 40:08
Speaker 12: So the DNA of W is kind of his DNA.
• 40:11
Speaker 12: So it was an easy transition, just a matter of
• 40:15
Speaker 12: getting used to us. So it was great. It was great,
• 40:20
Speaker 12: and we're excited to continue to move forward with it.
• 40:23
Speaker 5: All right, Hey, coach, it's been pleasure talking to you. You
• 40:26
Speaker 5: better get back to that camp and good luck with
• 40:28
Speaker 5: everything with the TBT. We'll see at the Kyle Sema
• 40:30
Speaker 5: Convention Center this weekend.
• 40:31
Speaker 12: Thanks a lot, Thank you so so much for your support.
• 40:34
Speaker 12: We appreciate it. You don't know much, we appreciate it
• 40:35
  Speaker 12: all right.
• 40:36
Speaker 5: Thank you, Coach Shed Jared West. I can just imagine though,
• 40:40
Speaker 5: the amount of crap that he's going to have to
• 40:41
Speaker 5: the Jared West Junior is going to have to put
• 40:43
Speaker 5: up with after wearing that Marshall after you know, we're
• 40:46
Speaker 5: after wearing the Kelly Green now having the blue and
• 40:49
Speaker 5: gold on. But hey, you know when your dad calls
• 40:52
Speaker 5: and as I said, he's been coaching him his whole
• 40:54
Speaker 5: life in one way or the other, you know, telling
• 40:56
Speaker 5: him to eat his vegetables or whatever. So uh, I
• 40:59
Speaker 5: do want to mention that this this thing is huge
• 41:01
Speaker 5: for Charleston. It's it's immensely popular, and we are going
• 41:05
Speaker 5: to actually broadcast those games on the Metro News radio network.
• 41:07
Speaker 5: We'll have more information on that. We'd like to have
• 41:09

Speaker 5: night watching little television, and of course I was watching
• 47:43
Speaker 5: the All Star Game. Did not stay awake for the
• 47:45
Speaker 5: dramatic finish, the home run derby finish. That's way past
• 47:50
Speaker 5: Papaal's bedtime. But I was watching some of it, and
• 47:53
Speaker 5: I flipped over at one point to a couple of
• 47:58
Speaker 5: the news shows last night, puting on Hannity for a while,
• 48:00
Speaker 5: then I went over to News Nation CNB. I like
• 48:03
Speaker 5: to see inn I like to kind of watch them all,
• 48:05
Speaker 5: and everybody seemed to be talking about the same thing
• 48:07
Speaker 5: with the Epstein files. Is if there's nothing to hide,
• 48:09
Speaker 5: why are we hiding? And there's some Republicans, including House
• 48:14
Speaker 5: Speaker Mike Johnson, and want some answers as well. We'll
• 48:17
Speaker 5: try to get into that a little bit more on
• 48:19
Speaker 5: Metro News midday. Let me see Texas breaking. Israel has
• 48:26
Speaker 5: struck several targets in Syria, including military buildings in Damascus
• 48:31
Speaker 5: after the Syrian regime forces carried out Aribic massacres. It

Speaker 5: gets the Joys community in southern Syria the regime failed
• 48:39
Speaker 5: to comply with multiple warnings from the Israeli military that,
• 48:41
Speaker 5: according to a texture. ABC News will have more on that,
• 48:44
Speaker 5: I'm sure coming up at the top of the hour. Texas.
• 48:46
Speaker 5: All of Donald Trump's biggest enemies are deathly quiet about
• 48:50
Speaker 5: the Epstein list if one exists. If they believed he
• 48:53
Speaker 5: was on the list, they'd be on the warpath to
• 48:54
Speaker 5: release it. He isn't on it, and they know it,
• 48:57
Speaker 5: but all of their friends are so. Again, bends on
• 49:01
  Speaker 5: your perspective as to who's I'm a big and I'm
• 49:04
Speaker 5: not a conspiracy theory person. People that know that about me,
• 49:06
Speaker 5: I'm not at all. However, I have watched a little
• 49:10
Speaker 5: bit a couple of documentaris at this Epstein thing. I
• 49:12
Speaker 5: think there's a whole lot of people on it. I
• 49:13
Speaker 5: think there's a whole lot of Republicans, a whole lot
• 49:15
Speaker 5: of Democrats, a whole lot of celebrities. I don't go
• 49:17
Speaker 5: as far as to say that we were eating children
• 49:20
Speaker 5: and you know, doing all in pizza shops and all
• 49:23
Speaker 5: this other stuff. I do think there's a whole lot
• 49:25
Speaker 5: of people on it, though, and I think it's probably
• 49:27
Speaker 5: an equal mix of Republicans and democrats and celebrities and
• 49:30
Speaker 5: people you never heard of too. But Dave Alan showing

Speaker 5: some of these texts, you can see trumpeters wringing their hands,

Speaker 5: it before is West Virginians have a difficult time with

Speaker 5: get my haircut, there was three and four. It's a
