- 0:00Speaker 1: First of all, of all the sporting events you've covered
- 0:03Speaker 1: in your career, where does that Game three rank in
- 0:05Speaker 1: your history?
- 0:07Speaker 2: Well, as far as hockey, I think it's number one.
- 0:10Speaker 3: I can't even think of one that was close to
- 0:12Speaker 3: it as wild as that, and with the storylines and
- 0:15Speaker 3: just everything that happened. I mean, the records were falling
- 0:17Speaker 3: left and right. So I've been to a few Super
- 0:20Speaker 3: Bowls that I think might be higher just overall, but
- 0:23Speaker 3: hockey games, I don't think you can beat what we
- 0:25Speaker 3: saw on Saturday.
- 0:27Speaker 4: It's funny you mentioned that.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I had a discussion online with people who said, wait
- 0:31Speaker 1: a minute, you're saying this is the Stanley Cup Finals
- 0:33Speaker 1: are the best sporting events in sports, better than the
- 0:37Speaker 1: Super Bowl? And I said, yes, I've been to five
- 0:40Speaker 1: super Bowls, and I think the Stanley Cup Finals are
- 0:43Speaker 1: better because there's seven of them.
- 0:45Speaker 4: And also, the super Bowl is so corporate. There are
- 0:48Speaker 4: very few the Seahawks Super Bowls are at exception, There
- 0:51Speaker 4: are very few rabid team fans.
- 0:54Speaker 1: There are much of people that bought tickets, that are
- 0:57Speaker 1: given tickets by corporate chills and whatnot.
- 1:00Speaker 4: It is a very sterile environment at the super Bowl.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I think the Vegas environment was anything but sterile on
- 1:06Speaker 1: Saturday Night.
- 1:07Speaker 4: What is Las Vegas's embrace of the Golden Knight. I
- 1:12Speaker 4: think I used to cover the Raiders.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I think it's why Mark Davis decided to move the
- 1:16Speaker 1: Raiders to Las Vegas when he saw what the Golden
- 1:18Speaker 1: Knights were doing. But can you just talk about how
- 1:21Speaker 1: because it was the first team, the love affair that
- 1:24Speaker 1: your region has with the Golden Knights for the last
- 1:26Speaker 1: nine years.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it was certainly part of it for
- 1:30Speaker 3: the Raiders, and it's part of why we've just seen
- 1:31Speaker 3: this explosion of every league wanting to move here now.
- 1:35Speaker 2: It really is just wild.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I mean, the whole community is just so behind this team,
- 1:38Speaker 3: and we were obviously having a huge debate before the NHL.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Came is like how could hockey be the right?
- 1:42Speaker 3: First thing is there is going to be another disaster
- 1:46Speaker 3: sun Belt franchise, which I know it's kind of turned
- 1:47Speaker 3: around now and these teams are doing great, but for
- 1:49Speaker 3: a while, I mean, well we did see Phoenix move
- 1:53Speaker 3: the Arizona Coyotes, of course, so it's kind of blown
- 1:56Speaker 3: me away to being here for the whole nine years
- 1:58Speaker 3: and seeing it.
- 1:59Speaker 2: But I think it was a lot of factors.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Of course, most fans will point right too that they
- 2:03Speaker 3: started right after the October one massacre we had here
- 2:07Speaker 3: in twenty seventeen, the shooting, and then the Golden Knights
- 2:10Speaker 3: really put on a beautiful ceremony and really did all
- 2:14Speaker 3: they could or helped the community.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So I think there was a bond there.
- 2:16Speaker 3: But I think the number one biggest thing is they
- 2:18Speaker 3: were just so good right away. I mean, it's hard
- 2:20Speaker 3: not to join in when you know.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I think they put up one.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Hundred and five points or something like that in their
- 2:24Speaker 3: first season, and just night after night, right from the beginning,
- 2:26Speaker 3: it was just like the craziest story you've ever seen
- 2:29Speaker 3: in sports. This team of misfits they called themselves, were
- 2:32Speaker 3: just beating everyone left and right. So I think it
- 2:35Speaker 3: all ties back to that first year. But I see
- 2:38Speaker 3: people now, I mean, I know they're like the villains
- 2:39Speaker 3: of the NHL, and people complain about them, and the.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Fan base takes some shots. I mean, I try to
- 2:45Speaker 2: be as impartial as I can be, and I can
- 2:47Speaker 2: tell you the fan base is a rabbit here. There's
- 2:49Speaker 2: no way they.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Should It's not less than just about any of these
- 2:52Speaker 3: traditional hockey markets that they tread to strong arm everyone else.
- 2:55Speaker 1: In my opinion, so good was the first season for
- 2:59Speaker 1: the Vegas gold Nights the NHL teams, and then the
- 3:01Speaker 1: league itself changed the expansion draft rules for when the
- 3:03Speaker 1: cracking came in and said no, no, we're.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Not going to make them this loaded like the Vegas
- 3:07Speaker 4: Golden Knights.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Were, and the Kraken are really fighting the Vegas Golden
- 3:11Speaker 1: Knights what they've done first year, going to the final
- 3:15Speaker 1: Cup final, three cup finals now in their first nine
- 3:17Speaker 1: years of existence, and winning the Cup in their second one.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I wanted to ask you about Bill Foley and what
- 3:23Speaker 1: kind of presence he is either in the arena, around
- 3:25Speaker 1: the community. It's a West Point graduate, member of the
- 3:27Speaker 1: long Gray line like I am, so I have a
- 3:29Speaker 1: little partiality to that. But is he a visible owner,
- 3:34Speaker 1: is he someone who's in the locker room or is
- 3:35Speaker 1: he a more.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Behind the scenes bill Foley.
- 3:39Speaker 3: It's certainly changed over the years, and not that I
- 3:42Speaker 3: blame him or anything. He's getting older and we just
- 3:44Speaker 3: talked about the state the franchise is in. When they
- 3:46Speaker 3: were talking about coming here, even before they were awarded
- 3:48Speaker 3: the team, he was probably the most visible I guess
- 3:52Speaker 3: at that time perspective, owner you'd ever seen. He was
- 3:53Speaker 3: at events, he was speaking all the time, giving people updates.
- 3:57Speaker 3: He was readily accessible to all of them. So I'd
- 4:02Speaker 3: say that lasted through about the first couple of seasons,
- 4:04Speaker 3: and now he's definitely taken more of a back seat.
- 4:06Speaker 3: He rarely draws attention to himself. He's not definitely not
- 4:09Speaker 3: in the locker room. I know he has a good
- 4:11Speaker 3: relationship with the players, and all of the players speak.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Highly of him.
- 4:14Speaker 3: But I'd say he goes out of the way now,
- 4:16Speaker 3: very different than a decade ago, not to be seen
- 4:18Speaker 3: too much. I know he sits with Kelly mccrimman and
- 4:21Speaker 3: George mcpee, the kind of the two guys at the
- 4:23Speaker 3: head of the hockey operations during every game, so you'll
- 4:25Speaker 3: see him on TV. You'll see them reacting to the
- 4:27Speaker 3: goals and stuff. But definitely not as not as.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Ever present as he once was. But I also don't
- 4:33Speaker 2: think he's that meddling. I think he kind of lets
- 4:35Speaker 2: those guys do what they want.
- 4:36Speaker 3: From a hockey perspective, of course, he signs off on
- 4:38Speaker 3: the big decision, but I think he's obviously done a
- 4:40Speaker 3: very good job This is.
- 4:41Speaker 4: The voice of Case Kaefer.
- 4:42Speaker 1: He's from the Las Vegas Sun talking about these epics
- 4:45Speaker 1: Stanley Cup Finals between the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina
- 4:48Speaker 1: Hurricane and KGr.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Case, after what you witnessed in Game three, do you
- 4:52Speaker 5: think the momentum of the series shifted at all despite
- 4:56Speaker 5: the Golden Knights having this two to one lead.
- 5:01Speaker 2: I could see it a little bit. I feel like Carolina.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I mean, Carolina was so down after the game, but
- 5:05Speaker 3: at the same time, part of that was there, like
- 5:06Speaker 3: what they still feel like they could be the better team.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I mean, they came back from a four to zero
- 5:10Speaker 2: deficit and tied it up. So I think just with
- 5:13Speaker 2: the craziness.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Of how that ended and all the things in Vegas's factor,
- 5:16Speaker 3: like Braydon McNabb coming back after not flying back with
- 5:19Speaker 3: the team and getting thirty stitches in.
- 5:21Speaker 2: His nose, his whole nose is messed up. I do
- 5:23Speaker 2: feel like the vive Yeah, yeah, exactly. I feel like
- 5:26Speaker 2: an Ultimate Hockey Player story, we have a new one
- 5:28Speaker 2: to talk about.
- 5:29Speaker 3: So I do feel like the momentum the vibes are
- 5:30Speaker 3: a little bit more on Vegas's side.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Now, But we've seen all these games are crazy. We
- 5:34Speaker 2: talked about coin flips.
- 5:35Speaker 3: It could just easily go back the other way here
- 5:37Speaker 3: in Game four tomorrow night, because it's another one that
- 5:39Speaker 3: could go either way.
- 5:40Speaker 1: John twitter up, what was your reaction was Les Vegans
- 5:44Speaker 1: and Golden Knights fans reaction when they hired him out
- 5:47Speaker 1: of the ESPN TV analysts the lead this season to
- 5:50Speaker 1: get a spark for this team.
- 5:51Speaker 4: It's worked, obviously.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm meaning some of my words. I guess I
- 5:55Speaker 2: didn't love the move.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I'd say the fans it was split as well, but
- 5:58Speaker 3: I'd say they were more. I mean, the fans just
- 6:00Speaker 3: want to win so bad. They were probably sixty five
- 6:03Speaker 3: thirty five on getting rid of Bruce Cassidy and going
- 6:06Speaker 3: to John Tortorella. And clearly it's turned out to be
- 6:08Speaker 3: a great move. I just thought, on the surface, didn't
- 6:10Speaker 3: make a ton of sense to be I mean, you
- 6:11Speaker 3: ask anyone in hockey if who's the better hockey mind,
- 6:14Speaker 3: especially before this run, they would have said Cassidy and
- 6:17Speaker 3: Vegas re jiggers their team so much, you know, every offseason.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I felt like if there were issues with Cassidy, he
- 6:23Speaker 3: just make a few changes and he'd probably be the
- 6:25Speaker 3: guy you want going forward, but.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Clearly I mean that there were there were deeper issues there.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Tortorella's really uh talked about playing freely and really just
- 6:34Speaker 3: made great relationships and inroads with these players. So he's
- 6:36Speaker 3: done exactly what they wanted to. I still wonder what
- 6:39Speaker 3: the shelf life of it is. I mean, we see
- 6:40Speaker 3: Vegas be successful year after year and still get rid
- 6:42Speaker 3: of these coaches one after the other. The players clearly
- 6:46Speaker 3: had a falling out with Cassidy and in his messaging
- 6:49Speaker 3: wasn't the same. But it's not like Tortorella is any
- 6:51Speaker 3: easier on the players than Cassidy. So it's working well
- 6:53Speaker 3: right now. I'm sure you want to hoist the cup,
- 6:55Speaker 3: but just talks to him signing like a three year extension.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I still think it'd be favored that he's probably not
- 6:59Speaker 3: the co for three more years based on the history.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Here exactly his precedent is that he rides him hard
- 7:05Speaker 1: and then he moves on. The players just don't want
- 7:08Speaker 1: him anymore. This is case key for the Las Vegas
- 7:11Speaker 1: son joining us from Las Vegas.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Would you say Mitch Marner's arrival elevated Vegas beyond that
- 7:17Speaker 5: twenty twenty three championship team.
- 7:22Speaker 2: It's tough to say.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I still think maybe the twenty Let's see how it ends.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I guess, first of all, you know, if they beat Carolina,
- 7:29Speaker 3: Carolina is so. I think Carolina has been a much
- 7:31Speaker 3: tougher opponent in the Stanley Cup Final than the Panthers.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Not to take anything away from that twenty twenty three
- 7:36Speaker 3: Panthers team, which had.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Like the historic run through the playoffs. I think they
- 7:38Speaker 2: were the last team.
- 7:39Speaker 3: In and beat everyone up, but they were just so
- 7:41Speaker 3: injured by the time they got to the Golden Knights,
- 7:43Speaker 3: like you looked at clinching game, like all their guys
- 7:44Speaker 3: were out. Carolina is mostly about ninety five percent healthy,
- 7:49Speaker 3: so we'll see what happened. I do feel like the
- 7:51Speaker 3: twenty twenty three team at this point was a little
- 7:53Speaker 3: more dominant.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I think they're probably even a little bit better defensively.
- 7:56Speaker 2: But if they knock off Carolina, especially if.
- 7:59Speaker 3: They do it here in quick fashion, then I'll be
- 8:02Speaker 3: maybe willing to say Marner pushes him over the top
- 8:04Speaker 3: and this was even a little better at least playoff team.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Mitch Myer is about to win the con Smythe Trophy
- 8:09Speaker 1: for what he's done here in these postseason Let me
- 8:12Speaker 1: ask you case, do the Vegas Golden Knights expect it
- 8:15Speaker 1: to be Bussy or Anderson.
- 8:16Speaker 4: In Game four in goal for Carolina?
- 8:18Speaker 3: You think, I get the sense a little bit more Bussy,
- 8:22Speaker 3: but Carolina is doing a good job at you know.
- 8:24Speaker 3: They never neither side ever wants to give anything away
- 8:27Speaker 3: in the Stanley Cup Finals, and I do think that
- 8:30Speaker 3: Rod Branda Moore's comments yesterday did cast some doubts, saying
- 8:33Speaker 3: there would be no lineup changes, although then he did say,
- 8:35Speaker 3: you know, the goalie decision isn't gonna come yet, So
- 8:38Speaker 3: I think Bussy is the favorite, but I do think
- 8:40Speaker 3: they will be prepared for both, which is interesting. Mitch Marner,
- 8:44Speaker 3: I can't believe he admitted this after the games had
- 8:45Speaker 3: on his penalty shot, he did not realize that Anderson
- 8:48Speaker 3: had been pulled and it was Brandon. Bussy has a
- 8:50Speaker 3: different club hand and stuff, so I think maybe they'll
- 8:53Speaker 3: have a little more awareness going in the Game four.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the greatest mop up duty performance in
- 8:58Speaker 1: Stanley Cup Final history, to say the least. Let's shift
- 9:00Speaker 1: here's the NBA, because we're all gog up here that
- 9:03Speaker 1: the Sonics are coming back, and it was announced, of
- 9:05Speaker 1: course by Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, that Seattle and
- 9:08Speaker 1: Las Vegas were the NBA's targets to expand with a
- 9:12Speaker 1: potential vote this fall or if not sooner. What is
- 9:15Speaker 1: the fervor for the NBA down there? You've got the
- 9:18Speaker 1: A's and they're building a stadium. First of all, I
- 9:20Speaker 1: don't know where the progress is on that stadium near
- 9:22Speaker 1: the old Tropicana site. But what is the tenor of
- 9:26Speaker 1: the NBA. It has to have a new arena. It
- 9:29Speaker 1: appears Las Vegas have a stomach for that. On top
- 9:33Speaker 1: of the arena you have on top of a new
- 9:34Speaker 1: A stadium. What's the vibe about the NBA coming to
- 9:38Speaker 1: Las Vegas there?
- 9:40Speaker 3: I feel of a vibe for the NBA is like
- 9:42Speaker 3: a lot more positive other than the A's which is
- 9:44Speaker 3: kind of ironic since the A's of the stadiums going
- 9:47Speaker 3: up nicely there in town this week to play a
- 9:50Speaker 3: couple series against starting with the Brewers tonight.
- 9:52Speaker 2: But the NBA just like that was the league.
- 9:55Speaker 3: People that have been in Las Vegas a long time
- 9:57Speaker 3: just love basketball. I think it probably dates back to
- 9:59Speaker 3: the ninety and UNLV's run. They always thought the NBA
- 10:02Speaker 3: would be first.
- 10:03Speaker 2: That was kind of the league everyone always wanted. So
- 10:05Speaker 2: I think there is some real fervor about this.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Actually happening, and people are really excited with the NBA.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I feel like it's way more split on baseball. There's
- 10:12Speaker 3: still a lot of people that are skeptical baseball will
- 10:14Speaker 3: work here. I guess just with the success of the
- 10:17Speaker 3: Golden Knights, everyone's spoiled thinks they're gonna have an expansion
- 10:19Speaker 3: team that's good right away.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I think they're more excited about having their own team.
- 10:22Speaker 3: So yeah, I'd say if we get this done and
- 10:24Speaker 3: it happens as quickly as some of the timelines we've seen,
- 10:26Speaker 3: I think you'll see two new rabid fan bases in
- 10:30Speaker 3: Seattle and in Vegas with these two new teams.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Maybe Las Vegans are just smart people who know John
- 10:35Speaker 4: Fisher is a snake and they don't like the A's
- 10:38Speaker 4: for the fact that he just stole them out of Oakland. Case.
- 10:40Speaker 4: I know you got a roll.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Appreciate you joining us, enjoy what has been an absolutely
- 10:44Speaker 1: riveting Cup Finals, and appreciate what you do in the
- 10:46Speaker 1: newspaper industry and journalism thank you, sir. All right, thanks
- 10:49Speaker 1: a lot for having me case Keiefer from the Las
- 10:52Speaker 1: Vegas Sun talking about an epic Stanley Cup final. There's
- 10:56Speaker 1: only three games in and three unbelievable hockey games. Game
- 10:59Speaker 1: five four tomorrow night, right here on the air on
- 11:02Speaker 1: ninety three point three. K jar John Foresland, Eddie Olchick.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I had Eddie Elchik on the show Friday morning when
- 11:06Speaker 1: I was pinch hitting for Chuck on the morning show,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and he was just going on and on about this final.
- 11:11Speaker 1: He's like, you know, maybe nationally people didn't think Vegas,
- 11:14Speaker 1: Carolina was going to be anything.
- 11:15Speaker 4: He was just blown away. And this was before game three.
- 11:19Speaker 1: For those of you who went to the windows on
- 11:22Speaker 1: his Belmont Stakes, pick you, Eddie ol Edzone kind of
- 11:26Speaker 1: steered you wrong there.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Runnegae didn't win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I didn't mention that in the headlines, but the Kentucky
- 11:32Speaker 1: Derby winner won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. One thing
- 11:37Speaker 1: we didn't talk about christ and it's been on the
- 11:39Speaker 1: text line and we have a few minutes to talk
- 11:40Speaker 1: about it here four.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Nite, four to five.
- 11:41Speaker 2: One.
- 11:41Speaker 1: By the way, if you watch in the Cup Final.
- 11:44Speaker 1: You should watch it on CBC sports Net channel ninety nine.
- 11:46Speaker 1: If you have cable here in Seattle, as I always say,
- 11:49Speaker 1: you're paying seven hundred dollars a month or whatever Comcast
- 11:51Speaker 1: got you for anyway, Exfinity got you for anyway, some miles.
- 11:54Speaker 1: We use some of that money. And what is a
- 11:56Speaker 1: fabulous production. The noise, the in a you know, audio
- 12:00Speaker 1: just was a getting another fantastic production on Saturday night.
- 12:04Speaker 1: One thing a couple of people on the text line
- 12:06Speaker 1: wanted us to talk about. Remember we talked about Brendan Soresby,
- 12:10Speaker 1: the Texas Tech quarterback Chris who got allegedly or it
- 12:15Speaker 1: looked like apparently suspended for gambling on college sports. Well,
- 12:21Speaker 1: a judge in Texas rolled this morning that he was
- 12:25Speaker 1: going to give Soresby a preliminary injunction that prevents the
- 12:29Speaker 1: NCAA from punishing the Texas Tech quarterback for violating its
- 12:32Speaker 1: rules on sports gambling. Judge Ken Curry. This is from
- 12:37Speaker 1: the ESPN dot com story on this case. Judge Ken
- 12:40Speaker 1: Curry in Texas, maybe a Texas Tech donor for all
- 12:44Speaker 1: we know, ruled that Soarsby's attorney's demonstrated he will suffer
- 12:48Speaker 1: a quote, probable, imminent and irreparable injury if he's unable
- 12:52Speaker 1: to play for the Red Raiders in twenty twenty six
- 12:54Speaker 1: and enjoin the NCAAA. En joined meaning prohibited from practicing
- 13:00Speaker 1: or playing this fall, So the NCAA cannot suspend him
- 13:04Speaker 1: for the entire season.
- 13:06Speaker 4: According to the judge in.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Texas, Sowersby will still miss Texas Tech's first two games.
- 13:11Speaker 1: That was the penalty that had been proposed by his attorneys.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Sawersby had been ruled ineligible by the NCAAA after it
- 13:19Speaker 1: was discovered he had waged approximately ninety thousand dollars on
- 13:23Speaker 1: professional and college sports over four years, including forty bets
- 13:26Speaker 1: involving Indiana football when he was a freshman with the
- 13:29Speaker 1: Hoosiers in twenty twenty two. The NCAA denied Texas Tech's
- 13:34Speaker 1: appeal for reinstatement on Friday. But now the judge instead
- 13:37Speaker 1: is found in favor of Soreersby. And here we go
- 13:40Speaker 1: again we talk about the NCAA. Remember, the NCAA is
- 13:43Speaker 1: not just his body of building in Indianapolis. It's the
- 13:46Speaker 1: member schools and the presidents of those member schools that
- 13:48Speaker 1: vote on the legislation and what the NCAA does. But
- 13:52Speaker 1: the NCAAA can't get anything done because every time they
- 13:55Speaker 1: try to do something, they get sued or they get
- 13:57Speaker 1: a priminary in junction in court. Let's suspend the guy
- 14:00Speaker 1: who's betting on college sport. Nope, judge says, can't do that.
- 14:04Speaker 1: So the whole reason that the NCAA keeps looking at
- 14:07Speaker 1: Congress to clean up NIL and the transfer portal and
- 14:11Speaker 1: just wayward crazy money that's going around college sports to
- 14:15Speaker 1: athletes in basketball and football, is because they know they'll
- 14:18Speaker 1: get sued if they do something. If they try to
- 14:21Speaker 1: stop a player from making five million dollars or going
- 14:24Speaker 1: above the twenty point five million dollar revenue share cap
- 14:28Speaker 1: and to try to limit that and put guardrails in,
- 14:30Speaker 1: they know they're going to get sued. This is just
- 14:32Speaker 1: another example of college sports not being able to govern itself.
- 14:38Speaker 1: One because they have college presidents who are so greedy
- 14:40Speaker 1: and just the havelves want to keep getting bigger, be
- 14:43Speaker 1: bigger halves. And two because whenever they do try to
- 14:46Speaker 1: do something, the courts step in or the lawyers step
- 14:48Speaker 1: in and they sue them, Lawyers get paid, injunctions get filed,
- 14:53Speaker 1: and nothing changes. And here we are wild wild West
- 14:58Speaker 1: of money and lawlessness and what rules. So apparently you
- 15:02Speaker 1: can bet on college sports ninety thousand dollars worth and
- 15:06Speaker 1: still play because whatever rules the NCAA and it's member
- 15:10Speaker 1: schools that put in don't stand a test of the
- 15:12Speaker 1: local court.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Have all the things to fix in college sports. We
- 15:20Speaker 1: could begin by allowing the schools to fix themselves and
- 15:23Speaker 1: not have lawyers in filing injunctions and court rulings that
- 15:27Speaker 1: who knows what kind of a partisanship is. I'm just
- 15:29Speaker 1: suppositioning that if you're a Texas judge's ruling this, that
- 15:32Speaker 1: there might be some home court advantage there. But you
- 15:36Speaker 1: can sense maybe a frustration on the presidents in the universities.
- 15:41Speaker 1: What can we do, which is why they're going to Congress,
- 15:44Speaker 1: And know what Congress is trying to do is that
- 15:46Speaker 1: they're trying to have a bipartisan bill. Senator Maria Cantwell
- 15:49Speaker 1: here in Washington is part of a very unusual arrangement
- 15:52Speaker 1: with Ted Cruz, a partnership with Ted Cruz out of
- 15:55Speaker 1: Texas to try to get a bipartisan bill to fix
- 15:57Speaker 1: college sports. And even that can't get It's settled because
- 16:01Speaker 1: many people in Congress, Chris are the ones who want
- 16:04Speaker 1: to keep the halves to get even more halves because
- 16:06Speaker 1: they're like from the go to old boy network or
- 16:08Speaker 1: the Southeastern Conference or from the Big Ten. If you're
- 16:11Speaker 1: a Michigan Ohio congressman, you don't want to put in
- 16:15Speaker 1: anything that would limit the revenues and the riches from
- 16:18Speaker 1: Michigan Ohio State football.
- 16:19Speaker 4: You get voted out office. Same at Alabama or LSU.
- 16:23Speaker 4: It's just a it's a mess, to say the least.
- 16:27Speaker 1: It did start by them, not the NCAAA, the college
- 16:30Speaker 1: presidents not wanting to do anything for fear of getting sued,
- 16:33Speaker 1: and now everything happens because there are no guardrails. But
- 16:37Speaker 1: now you get to the point where they try to
- 16:38Speaker 1: put in guardrails and they can't get that done either.
- 16:42Speaker 4: It's a for those of us who love college sports.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And loved the schools we went to, and those of
- 16:49Speaker 1: you who give money to athletic department programs to support
- 16:52Speaker 1: it and to try to make keep them competitive.
- 16:54Speaker 4: It's.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Ay much more left before you just go, I'm going
- 16:59Speaker 1: to spend my money elsewhere. I'm going to give to philanthropy,
- 17:03Speaker 1: or I'm gonna give to ballet, or I'm gonna give
- 17:05Speaker 1: to the symphony, or I'm going to give to the
- 17:08Speaker 1: science department instead of the football team. It's frustrating, to
- 17:12Speaker 1: say the least, four nine four five one on the
- 17:14Speaker 1: komodage text line in your opinions on that on Soresby
- 17:17Speaker 1: being reinstated by a judge in Texas. Can you imagine
- 17:20Speaker 1: if a U dub quarterback was suspended by the NCAA
- 17:23Speaker 1: and a judge in Seattle, RU We'll.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Just think of it like this.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Player admits to gambling violations, but he's allowed to play
- 17:35Speaker 5: on Saturdays. That's embarrassing. That shows that we are far,
- 17:42Speaker 5: far worried about the wrong things.
- 17:44Speaker 4: In NLI.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Excuse me, n L, I can't get the words right.
- 17:48Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying. In IL, yes, it's an issue,
- 17:51Speaker 5: but my goodness, dude just was like, yeah, I gambled,
- 17:55Speaker 5: excuse me, and he's gonna miss two games, but on
- 17:58Speaker 5: that third game he it very well be playing.
- 18:01Speaker 1: And I don't even know what Texas Tech schedule is,
- 18:03Speaker 1: but you can bet if the lawyers for him had
- 18:05Speaker 1: proposed it that they're playing West Texas A and M
- 18:08Speaker 1: and Abilene Private School for and then they're going to
- 18:14Speaker 1: play Texas A and M or somebody in week three.
- 18:18Speaker 1: I mean that just how it works, right.
- 18:21Speaker 5: It's sad this guy is about to Scott free after
- 18:25Speaker 5: doing something where if you did an NBA you're banned
- 18:27Speaker 5: for life. Yeah, that's right, Like we're talking about a
- 18:31Speaker 5: subject those are professional. I mean, these guys are basically
- 18:33Speaker 5: professional exactly. But when it comes down to it, we're
- 18:35Speaker 5: talking about a professional. Like if a NFL player had
- 18:38Speaker 5: done these things, it wouldn't be a question.
- 18:40Speaker 4: He's out the league. College are like, we'll go, we
- 18:43Speaker 4: want to fight this.
- 18:44Speaker 5: You get a good lawyer and you win eat, which
- 18:47Speaker 5: is really really bad. It's a viol it's a violation.
- 18:51Speaker 5: You're gambling on your sport that you play in. I
- 18:53Speaker 5: can see you're gambling on tennis.
- 18:54Speaker 4: It's like, what does this.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Guy know about tennis? I mean it's not good, but okay,
- 18:58Speaker 5: what is it? Like how he does doesn't know about it?
- 19:00Speaker 5: Like that he doesn't even play it. You would have
- 19:02Speaker 5: a better argument there, and then I'd be like, Okay,
- 19:05Speaker 5: he misses two games, but that that's just that's a
- 19:09Speaker 5: big concern for college football.
- 19:10Speaker 4: I'm just gonna leave it at that.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Pete Famil of ESPN reporting today that the just made
- 19:15Speaker 1: me chuckle quote. The general tenor around college athletics overus
- 19:19Speaker 1: the Soresby ruling is one of disgust. Well, yeah, because
- 19:25Speaker 1: if you're in college athletics, you're like, what the hell
- 19:27Speaker 1: can we do? We try to suspend a guy that
- 19:30Speaker 1: judge says, throws it out? What can we do? Congress?
- 19:34Speaker 1: Please help? Congress is like, I like my fifty yard
- 19:37Speaker 1: line seats at Alabama home games. I'm not gonna put
- 19:40Speaker 1: in any guardrails that limit the Crimson Tide from their
- 19:43Speaker 1: football program, just running amuck and spending as much money
- 19:46Speaker 1: as it wants to. Come on, man, you want me
- 19:49Speaker 1: voted at office, so it goes you know who else
- 19:51Speaker 1: wins through this whole thing, Chris, the lawyers that charge
- 19:54Speaker 1: thousands of dollars an hour, the rich You're Richard, the
- 20:00Speaker 1: cynical portion of the Greg Bell Show with Christopher Kidd Up. Next,
- 20:04Speaker 1: your chance to be a part of the show, as
- 20:05Speaker 1: we do every day. At eleven thirty, we'll read back
- 20:07Speaker 1: your text on the Tacoma Dodge text line four nine,
- 20:09Speaker 1: four to five one. The mayor of Maple Valley is
- 20:11Speaker 1: lurking somewhere to talk to him before his show starts
- 20:14Speaker 1: at noon. We'll do that after text two. All that's
- 20:17Speaker 1: coming up here on ninety three point three k JRFM.
- 20:20Speaker 6: Now back to Greg Bell and Christopher Kidd on your
- 20:23Speaker 6: Home for the Huskies, Krackett and the twelfth Man Sports Radio,
- 20:27Speaker 6: ninety three point three kjr FM.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Greg Bell Show with Christopher Kidd
- 20:38Speaker 1: on ninety three point three k JRFM. In our quest,
- 20:42Speaker 1: my quest to give you good journalism to read, I
- 20:45Speaker 1: highly recommend Daniel Brown of The Athletic, who I got
- 20:49Speaker 1: to know is the husband of Susan Slusser, the A's
- 20:51Speaker 1: beat writer now the Giants beat writer for the San
- 20:53Speaker 1: Francisco Chronicle, when I used to cover the A's back
- 20:56Speaker 1: in the day, Dan Brown, if you go to twin
- 21:00Speaker 1: at Brownie Athletic, Brownie Ie Athletic, he has a gift
- 21:05Speaker 1: article posted on the Great Dusty Baker seventy seven years old.
- 21:09Speaker 1: If you like sports and you like people, good people,
- 21:13Speaker 1: it's a really good story to read Daniel Brown writing
- 21:15Speaker 1: in The Athletic about Dusty Baker, who I it was
- 21:18Speaker 1: an absolute pleasure to cover in my time crossing over
- 21:21Speaker 1: from the Giants to the a's, a's to the Giants
- 21:23Speaker 1: during my time at the sacrament will be loved.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Be some Dusty Baker.
- 21:27Speaker 1: He has some great, great stories and Dan Brown writes
- 21:31Speaker 1: on a lot of them. Go to at Brownie Athletic
- 21:34Speaker 1: on Twitter x and you can read the athletics story
- 21:37Speaker 1: for free. It's part of the now, part of the time.
- 21:40Speaker 1: To be a part of the show, is what I'm
- 21:41Speaker 1: trying to say. On the big the Tacoma Dodge tax
- 21:45Speaker 1: Line four nine four five one.
- 21:48Speaker 5: All right, I talked about my running experience over the
- 21:51Speaker 5: weekend and from the two o six Sunday was an
- 21:55Speaker 5: awesome track meet at rent And Stadium, Holpe. I'm saying
- 21:57Speaker 5: his last name right, but Dylan from and a chord
- 22:01Speaker 5: Is broke a four minute mile. He won the race
- 22:04Speaker 5: where there were four other athletes from around the US
- 22:07Speaker 5: who have broken four minutes and beat them all. Dylan
- 22:10Speaker 5: will be attending Gonzaga University. I'm sure fans like Gozags.
- 22:14Speaker 5: Gonzaga will have three sub four minute miles on the
- 22:17Speaker 5: cost country team now. But that wasn't the highlight. There
- 22:21Speaker 5: was a thirteen year old girl who broke the world
- 22:23Speaker 5: record for fourteen and under in the mile, she ran
- 22:25Speaker 5: a four to thirty eight.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Wowitness four thirty Yeah she.
- 22:30Speaker 5: A tester for Dope, y'all kidding. If if she would
- 22:35Speaker 5: have been in the race for the high school, she.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Would have beat them all.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Each year that track produces, that track me produces outstanding performances.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Wow, that's some good stuff. Theah, thank you appreciate that
- 22:46Speaker 4: and good to get some visibility on that.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Yes, sir from the four two five Stanley Cup finals.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Off the hook, Dan Wilson should be should ban a
- 22:55Speaker 5: Rosermina from ever challenging a strike ball challenge again. He
- 22:59Speaker 5: hasn't won a challenge since eighteen ninety three. Yeah, well
- 23:01Speaker 5: played there, I said, you did see.
- 23:03Speaker 1: What you did there to the first Stanley Cup in
- 23:05Speaker 1: eighteen ninety three. Well done, well done. Two five three
- 23:10Speaker 1: says I'm a huge Capital, huge old cap letters soccer
- 23:13Speaker 1: fan and the World Cup as an event I wait
- 23:15Speaker 1: for every four years.
- 23:17Speaker 4: I absolutely love all the games.
- 23:19Speaker 1: However, I will not be attending games at Seattle anywhere
- 23:21Speaker 1: else because of ticket prices, traffic, security, and just general
- 23:25Speaker 1: world and local politics. The games are on TV and
- 23:28Speaker 1: I will keep my money. This state takes on its own, Yes,
- 23:33Speaker 1: and no we don't. Yeah, we don't have an income
- 23:36Speaker 1: tax yet. For most of us.
- 23:40Speaker 5: From the two five to three, I'm excited the World
- 23:42Speaker 5: Cup is coming to the US, but personally I can't
- 23:45Speaker 5: stand the crowds already traffic ridden, shadow conditions, and I
- 23:49Speaker 5: don't want to give the FIFA cartel any of my
- 23:52Speaker 5: own money either.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Yeah, the FIFA cartel. That's not an inaccurate statement. This
- 24:02Speaker 1: is go ahead, Okay.
- 24:03Speaker 5: My biggest problem from the two five to three is
- 24:05Speaker 5: why does Dan Wilson feel like he needs to platoon
- 24:08Speaker 5: players a lot of the time.
- 24:10Speaker 4: I don't get it because it usually doesn't work. Yeah,
- 24:14Speaker 4: that's that. We weren't even talking about that subject today.
- 24:17Speaker 4: That's another one that fans are pretty excited about.
- 24:19Speaker 1: A lot of options, a lot of opinions, I should say.
- 24:22Speaker 1: On what to do about Muno's in the closing situation,
- 24:27Speaker 1: there's a lot on there. One of us wants to
- 24:31Speaker 1: one of the four to five wants to get Luisa
- 24:34Speaker 1: raise from the giants, Keith Muno's monitors pitching. Hopefully we'll
- 24:38Speaker 1: get out of it like the Rock did. Oh, that's
- 24:41Speaker 1: our buddy, the coast. Guardo day guy.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Appreciate the love well. I don't know, what do you
- 24:45Speaker 4: think about.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Louise, Louise Castillo, Lisa Rees. I don't know that they
- 24:52Speaker 1: need to add another closer candidate other than fix the
- 24:55Speaker 1: ones they have. I still think they should do a committee.
- 24:57Speaker 1: I think when the matchups, say the seventh or eighth
- 25:01Speaker 1: inning might be the highest levee.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Bring in Munios.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Then if it's not a safe situation, so be it
- 25:06Speaker 1: and not in the ninth inning, and then bring in Ferrara.
- 25:09Speaker 1: If it's favorable for a left hander to come in,
- 25:11Speaker 1: then we know that Munos eats up right handers, so
- 25:15Speaker 1: if it's a right handers in the ninth, okay, if
- 25:17Speaker 1: the right handers are in the eighth, bring him in
- 25:18Speaker 1: the eighth.
- 25:19Speaker 4: That's what I would do.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Chuck two five three Chuck gave up some brought up
- 25:26Speaker 1: some great stats this morning that Munyos needs to pitch more,
- 25:29Speaker 1: as the aria is below one when he has one
- 25:31Speaker 1: day rest and his eria is nine plus on days
- 25:34Speaker 1: of two or more rest. I agree that we need
- 25:37Speaker 1: to go back to Scott's service times and just do
- 25:39Speaker 1: matchups rather than have a closer. It's true service did
- 25:42Speaker 1: option often do that? What happens in baseball is once
- 25:46Speaker 1: a guy like Andre's Munos makes two All Star Games
- 25:49Speaker 1: as a closer and then you start paying him like that,
- 25:52Speaker 1: then you want to pay him as a closer and
- 25:55Speaker 1: keep him in closer safe situations. That's what those guys
- 25:57Speaker 1: get paid to do. And so then you get that
- 26:00Speaker 1: was a different Munos five years ago or even three
- 26:03Speaker 1: years ago, and now that he is your closer and
- 26:06Speaker 1: you're paying him as one, then you put him in
- 26:07Speaker 1: closer situations. That that's the rationale anyway. I think their
- 26:12Speaker 1: job is to win games, and if the right handers
- 26:15Speaker 1: are in the eighth, bring him in the eighth. If
- 26:17Speaker 1: it's not a safe situation, so what you still pay
- 26:19Speaker 1: him for winning games? And if he's winning games in
- 26:21Speaker 1: the eighth, to win the game in the eighth. That's
- 26:23Speaker 1: I don't know, but I understand why they do it
- 26:26Speaker 1: the way they do it. I don't think they should
- 26:27Speaker 1: always do it the way they did it.
- 26:29Speaker 4: From the five eight five.
- 26:31Speaker 5: If a foural sweep by the Knicks happened, where would
- 26:34Speaker 5: you rank this Knicks team among other NBA championship teams.
- 26:39Speaker 4: That's a fun one.
- 26:40Speaker 5: I think there's a probably a handful of teams you
- 26:43Speaker 5: just in a tier of their own. I think the
- 26:46Speaker 5: what is it, the ninety six Bulls.
- 26:50Speaker 4: Go ahead and give me.
- 26:50Speaker 5: I know this is probably unfair, but give me the
- 26:52Speaker 5: twenty seventeen Warriors, because KD and Stephan them boys, that
- 26:56Speaker 5: was I mean, they won seventy nine games, was it?
- 26:59Speaker 5: So yeah, well we'll fill them in there. The two
- 27:02Speaker 5: thousand and one Los Angeles Lakers, when Kobe and Shack
- 27:05Speaker 5: were just you guys. You guys remember that, and I
- 27:09Speaker 5: forget with Lakers team in the eighties.
- 27:11Speaker 4: You can probably help me out with that.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Greg Worthy and Magic and that seventy nine they beat
- 27:16Speaker 1: the Sixers.
- 27:17Speaker 4: That was the rookie year for Magic Johnson. But later
- 27:20Speaker 4: on later years though in the eighties didn't have another
- 27:22Speaker 4: ruly Yeah, they beat the Celtics eighty six. I think
- 27:25Speaker 4: it was the eighty seven.
- 27:26Speaker 5: So the eighty seven Lakers, I think is as one
- 27:28Speaker 5: of those tier one levels. Yeah, Knicks ain't in that.
- 27:31Speaker 5: The Knicks are probably in that, you know, I agree
- 27:33Speaker 5: with the Wade. You know, i'd have to go make
- 27:36Speaker 5: a list, but I don't think they're in. I think
- 27:38Speaker 5: the teams that I just gave you the championship teams.
- 27:41Speaker 5: You just can't match those unfortunately.
- 27:43Speaker 1: You know the story of Magic Johnson nineteen seventy nine
- 27:45Speaker 1: rookie season out of Michigan State.
- 27:46Speaker 4: When Kareem got hurt in the finals he played Cell.
- 27:49Speaker 4: You probably watched the documentary about I've read about it,
- 27:52Speaker 4: seen it. Yes, Yes, that was amazing to watch live.
- 27:55Speaker 4: I couldn't.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Here's this point guard playing low posts of Kareem and
- 27:59Speaker 1: taking the home six months of school with the rim
- 28:01Speaker 1: it was. It was amazing.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Twoo six, says moonas much pitch more. That's right to
- 28:10Speaker 4: the point. Yeah, that's that's That's what Chuck was saying earlier.
- 28:14Speaker 5: From the three six to oh last one for me
- 28:16Speaker 5: as we got the mayor on Dick. The manners are
- 28:18Speaker 5: like the casino. I swear I'm off, but it only
- 28:21Speaker 5: takes one day then I go back.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, because they're always there from now until October twoo six.
- 28:29Speaker 1: This is an interesting, interesting perspective. In nineteen ninety four,
- 28:33Speaker 1: when the World Cup was in the United States, FIFA
- 28:35Speaker 1: sold tickets to the next day matches at the box office.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Walk up prices were thirty dollars. Did this do in
- 28:42Speaker 1: discouraged scalping Boy wouldn't that be something if you could
- 28:46Speaker 1: walk up prices even even with inflation, say they were
- 28:49Speaker 1: one hundred dollars, they would still be sold out in seconds.
- 28:53Speaker 1: But the problem is today there's so many avenues for
- 28:55Speaker 1: those people to then turn around and resell them on
- 28:57Speaker 1: the secondary market.
- 28:59Speaker 4: All you need are thumbs and phone and that's the Yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 1: The Mayor Maple Valley I in fornest, so he will
- 29:06Speaker 1: join me next to talk what he's got on his show.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Maybe I'll ask him if he's going to a World
- 29:10Speaker 1: Cup match. He ends up next with me next on
- 29:13Speaker 1: ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back to the Greg
- 29:23Speaker 1: Bellt Show at Christopher Kid Live on ninety three point
- 29:25Speaker 1: three KJRFM. We've talked about the closer situation for the Mariners.
- 29:30Speaker 1: We've talked about these NBA Finals, five thousand dollars to
- 29:34Speaker 1: get in price. Tonight at Madison Square Garden for the
- 29:36Speaker 1: first Infness is rolling his eyes the first finals game
- 29:40Speaker 1: inside the world's most famous.
- 29:43Speaker 7: The sporting event, I mean NBA Finals, NHL Finals, World Cup,
- 29:46Speaker 7: I mean, god, you got money to burn? I guess
- 29:50Speaker 7: that I don't. I don't fathom, but whatever, And then
- 29:52Speaker 7: the whole thing. There else, the fact that you can't
- 29:55Speaker 7: even all those Knicks fans that want to go hang
- 29:57Speaker 7: out and stuff can't do that because the selfishness of
- 30:00Speaker 7: the guy at sixteen hundred Pennsylvania.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Yes, I just we talked about the fact that there
- 30:06Speaker 1: will be no watch party outside Madison Square.
- 30:08Speaker 7: Cards. That's messed up, man, that's messed up.
- 30:13Speaker 4: That's just not right.
- 30:15Speaker 7: This is like it's the super Bowl is a different thing,
- 30:18Speaker 7: you know, because it's football is a different thing because
- 30:20Speaker 7: they don't do those types of things. But NBA finals,
- 30:23Speaker 7: Stanley Cup finals, when people you know, because you only
- 30:24Speaker 7: get eighteen thousand people in the building, right, how many
- 30:27Speaker 7: people in New York seven eight billion, million.
- 30:29Speaker 4: Billion, I think million billion, whatever. Yeah, it's whatever.
- 30:33Speaker 7: But yeah, I just hope there's hope Antonio wins, just
- 30:36Speaker 7: to have a series because screaming, screaming sweep, right now.
- 30:40Speaker 4: I'll just watch hockey and be happy with that. That's something.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Well, that one's going to go.
- 30:44Speaker 7: That one feels like it's going at least six or seven, right, sure?
- 30:46Speaker 4: Does?
- 30:47Speaker 7: I mean at two to one? I mean if Carolina
- 30:49Speaker 7: ties tomorrow and now we know where it's going, six, so.
- 30:52Speaker 4: I'd start Bussy tomorrow. That was so fun watching him
- 30:55Speaker 4: the other night.
- 30:56Speaker 7: Good story, really good story. I'm surprised he hadn't played yet,
- 30:59Speaker 7: but they'd have so much. I mean, what were they
- 31:00Speaker 7: before the series? They were twelve and one right right
- 31:03Speaker 7: before this, before this series, So how do you go
- 31:05Speaker 7: away from him? But yeah, that no lead is safe
- 31:09Speaker 7: in that series, both teams have had two to nothing
- 31:11Speaker 7: leads and lost the game. Vegas had a four to
- 31:13Speaker 7: nothing lead and almost lost the game. So yeah, it's
- 31:16Speaker 7: it's compelling stuff for sure.
- 31:18Speaker 4: It's really cool. Yeah you have And what's your interest level?
- 31:22Speaker 4: On a scale of one to ten on the World Cup?
- 31:25Speaker 7: Probably pseudo soccer day seven, six seven somewhere there?
- 31:29Speaker 4: Would you pay? I say six to seven? I'm sorry,
- 31:31Speaker 4: my apologies all the kids, all five kids, It's okay,
- 31:36Speaker 4: six or seven? Were sure?
- 31:39Speaker 5: There's kids in the car? Six seven?
- 31:41Speaker 4: Would you pay two three to go to a World Cup? Mat?
- 31:44Speaker 7: I don't know what I would pay, to be honest
- 31:46Speaker 7: with you, I've thought about that. We talked about a
- 31:48Speaker 7: little bit last week. I don't know what my drop
- 31:50Speaker 7: dead number is. I think it would have to How
- 31:52Speaker 7: do I feel that day? Do I want to deal?
- 31:54Speaker 3: With.
- 31:54Speaker 7: I mean, I'm talking about you know, President Trump going
- 31:58Speaker 7: to to Madison Square Garden and the shoes that's causing.
- 32:00Speaker 7: I mean, every World Cup game is going to have
- 32:02Speaker 7: those same type of issues. Sure, you know, all the
- 32:04Speaker 7: stuff they've got put up down by I'm still calling
- 32:06Speaker 7: it lum and field uh and uh settle. You know, yeah,
- 32:10Speaker 7: I'm not beholding the FIFA. So the you know, I
- 32:14Speaker 7: think maybe, I mean it might be of those impulse
- 32:18Speaker 7: things at last minute that if I see something. And
- 32:20Speaker 7: the thing is is a lot of those games are
- 32:22Speaker 7: going on and weren't on the air. So you know,
- 32:24Speaker 7: a lot of a lot of our games here are midday.
- 32:26Speaker 4: Right three three noon, starts in one eight pm the
- 32:29Speaker 4: last one.
- 32:30Speaker 7: Yeah, so I mean it's probably not going to happen
- 32:32Speaker 7: for me. Yeah, So I don't even probably a moot point,
- 32:35Speaker 7: I guess in that sense, But I don't know what
- 32:37Speaker 7: I mean, probably a couple hundred bucks, you know, to
- 32:39Speaker 7: get in, But I don't know. I just I think
- 32:42Speaker 7: just for the experience of going to the World Cup,
- 32:45Speaker 7: I think that'd be fun. I think I think, you know,
- 32:47Speaker 7: if you're a sports fan, whether you're a huge soccer
- 32:50Speaker 7: fan or not, there's events you want to. I mean,
- 32:52Speaker 7: I'm lucky when when we saw the Kingdome and we
- 32:55Speaker 7: had regionals and final fours here. I went to some
- 32:57Speaker 7: of those, sat in the nosebleed and three level for
- 33:01Speaker 7: a couple of basketball games.
- 33:02Speaker 1: The year that UCLA beat was it Arkansas in the
- 33:04Speaker 1: final Yeah, And it was the year that Brian Reeves
- 33:08Speaker 1: of Oklahoma State ripped down the rim.
- 33:09Speaker 7: At the King Oh yeah, big country yeah, big country.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:13Speaker 7: I mean I I saw UNLV duke. I think it
- 33:16Speaker 7: was from the three hundred level. So yeah, I mean
- 33:18Speaker 7: that was and that was kind of just a cool experience,
- 33:20Speaker 7: right to do that. But I don't know, it's Olympics.
- 33:24Speaker 7: I've been to the you know, we went to the
- 33:25Speaker 7: Olympics in Salt Lake when we lived there, went to
- 33:27Speaker 7: we just went to one event. Actually we went to
- 33:29Speaker 7: a bunch of post events. They did a great thing there.
- 33:32Speaker 7: They did the metal ceremonies were at night, yea, in
- 33:35Speaker 7: a big area that they built right across from the
- 33:36Speaker 7: Delta Center. They had concerts there and stuff like that,
- 33:40Speaker 7: and we would so we would go down there and
- 33:42Speaker 7: hang out and just kind of get the vibe of
- 33:43Speaker 7: downtown Salt Lake because it was very much not like
- 33:45Speaker 7: normal Salt Lake. Even though it really turned into a
- 33:48Speaker 7: domestic Olympics because of nine to eleven, there was still
- 33:51Speaker 7: enough of an international flavor there that was really kind
- 33:53Speaker 7: of fun. And in Salt Lake they have a pretty
- 33:55Speaker 7: cool thing called mass transit that's actually usable and workable
- 33:59Speaker 7: for most people. So we would jump on that go down.
- 34:01Speaker 7: So we did that a couple times. Went to a
- 34:02Speaker 7: hockey game. I'm really glad we sat Canada Sweden hockey.
- 34:04Speaker 4: It was awesome.
- 34:05Speaker 7: But even that was a pain, and part of it
- 34:08Speaker 7: was just post nine to eleven, all the security getting in.
- 34:12Speaker 7: But I'm glad we did those things. And and but yeah,
- 34:14Speaker 7: the middle of Cup, I don't know what the drop
- 34:15Speaker 7: dead number is. I now you asked me my interest level.
- 34:18Speaker 7: Now I'm thinking about it. On Saturday, just kind of
- 34:21Speaker 7: after the Mariners game was kind of out of hand
- 34:24Speaker 7: and what have you like? I flipped on I watched
- 34:27Speaker 7: the friendly between Germany and US.
- 34:29Speaker 4: That was some goal at the folly in the first half.
- 34:33Speaker 7: A goal that you don't see often enough in soccer
- 34:37Speaker 7: at that level most of the time, those guys, because
- 34:39Speaker 7: of the power and the strength they have in their
- 34:41Speaker 7: in their legs. That ball ends up in the upper
- 34:44Speaker 7: deck and the fact that he went bar down and
- 34:46Speaker 7: not nail that was was sensational. So yeah, I mean
- 34:48Speaker 7: so I watched that. In fact, I watched that and
- 34:51Speaker 7: they lost two to one, and I felt really good
- 34:53Speaker 7: about the US.
- 34:53Speaker 4: To Germany, a top ten team in the world.
- 34:56Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I thought they played top Yeah, I thought
- 34:58Speaker 7: they played well and that kind of I'll be excited,
- 35:00Speaker 7: like on Friday when the US plays. I think we
- 35:03Speaker 7: might have something going on with some neighbors and and
- 35:05Speaker 7: I'd much rather watch that than America game. Yeah on Friday,
- 35:08Speaker 7: because whatever where they at Friday, The US is in
- 35:10Speaker 7: other No, No, the Mariners where they at. They're in
- 35:12Speaker 7: Baltimore in Washington. Yeah, ok, yeah, give me the US game.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Anyway, we started to show off and I gave an
- 35:20Speaker 1: ode to Bill Stevens.
- 35:22Speaker 4: Yeah you did that. Yeah, I just wanted your thoughts
- 35:25Speaker 4: on Bills.
- 35:26Speaker 7: Just for people to know. The sports information director aka
- 35:29Speaker 7: the PR guy at Wazoo for Athletics for a long
- 35:32Speaker 7: three decades, three plus decades. Great guy, challenging job at times, yes,
- 35:39Speaker 7: uniquely challenging, uniquely challenging in a lot of ways. He
- 35:42Speaker 7: doesn't have a lot of traditional media there every day.
- 35:46Speaker 7: Probably was at the forefront of having guys that are
- 35:48Speaker 7: the I hate using the terminal use it, the bloggers
- 35:51Speaker 7: and the you know kind of the website guys as
- 35:53Speaker 7: opposed to you know, traditional media. Although he would have
- 35:56Speaker 7: people come down from Spokane. They have had a beat
- 35:58Speaker 7: writer for the Spokesman. But at the same time, the
- 36:01Speaker 7: challenge is how do you promote a product that's in
- 36:04Speaker 7: a small market. And then the challenges he had over
- 36:08Speaker 7: the years with the different coaches he had. I mean,
- 36:11Speaker 7: you know it's he you know, from Mike Price awesome,
- 36:15Speaker 7: but you know, quirky to Dobe's the nicest guy on
- 36:19Speaker 7: the planet. The Paul Wolf era was awful, so was
- 36:22Speaker 7: most most so were most basketball eras, although he was
- 36:25Speaker 7: never the primary basketball guy, but outside of Tony Bennett
- 36:29Speaker 7: and a year of Kyle Smith, basketball was a challenge.
- 36:32Speaker 7: But then he had to deal with the pirate and
- 36:35Speaker 7: and I think he was the perfect guy for Mike
- 36:39Speaker 7: Leach in a lot of ways. I think he was
- 36:41Speaker 7: one of maybe the perfect guy because Bill's demeanor is
- 36:44Speaker 7: so mellow and and Leech is so out out of
- 36:48Speaker 7: the box wild. I was gonna tell a story later
- 36:50Speaker 7: this week. We'll do a little something good for Bill.
- 36:52Speaker 7: But I just had one of the greatest things is
- 36:55Speaker 7: he a handful of times went over there and kind
- 36:58Speaker 7: of combined with radio and at Fox doing stuff, and
- 37:03Speaker 7: every time Bill's like, Okay, he's got to be here here.
- 37:05Speaker 7: So you got this amount of time and it never worked.
- 37:07Speaker 7: And it wasn't because of Bill. It was because of
- 37:09Speaker 7: Leach on his own on schedule, right, Yeah, and uh,
- 37:12Speaker 7: and you know he dealt with Rollovich and the COVID thing.
- 37:15Speaker 4: That was a nightmare. Yeah, for the school.
- 37:18Speaker 7: And for Bill and for everybody the athletic department. So
- 37:20Speaker 7: departures of athletic directors, you know, the way the guy
- 37:23Speaker 7: left Bill, the way Bill Moose left in the middle
- 37:25Speaker 7: of the night to go to Nebraska.
- 37:27Speaker 1: The disintegration of the PAC twelve right and kicked it
- 37:30Speaker 1: basically kicked Washington State in Oregon State to the curve.
- 37:33Speaker 7: And at the same time, months later, had to deal
- 37:34Speaker 7: with his athletic director just bailing on the school and
- 37:37Speaker 7: having to kind of pick up the pieces from that
- 37:39Speaker 7: to go to a rival school. So yeah, it's it's
- 37:41Speaker 7: he's had some challenges and he's done it with nothing
- 37:43Speaker 7: but class and and Wazoo was better off with Bill Stevens. There,
- 37:47Speaker 7: I know who's taken over. And Bobby's gonna do a
- 37:49Speaker 7: great job. And much like you know what, Jeff does
- 37:51Speaker 7: a great job. Jeff Beck told does a great job
- 37:53Speaker 7: you does. You know, we're lucky in that. I've worked
- 37:55Speaker 7: with a lot of athletic directors a lot of different markets,
- 37:57Speaker 7: and I can tell you that that whether it be better,
- 38:00Speaker 7: I told it you to Bill at Wazoo. Those two
- 38:02Speaker 7: guys were in illeague.
- 38:03Speaker 4: Of their owns. You're here, ye, friend of mine? What
- 38:05Speaker 4: do you get today?
- 38:06Speaker 7: We're going to get into a little bit of the
- 38:08Speaker 7: rough story again. Mike Sandel's going to join us at
- 38:10Speaker 7: two o'clock. He wrote a great column in The Athletic
- 38:12Speaker 7: you reference to day on your show about Russ and
- 38:14Speaker 7: the Hall of Fame manners obviously coming up Molly Wap
- 38:17Speaker 7: at one o'clock we'll get into that. How much blame
- 38:20Speaker 7: is on Munio's how much blame is on the lack
- 38:22Speaker 7: of usage for Munyos? Yeah, I don't know, like it's
- 38:26Speaker 7: I think there's some more people that are culpable than
- 38:29Speaker 7: just the guy that couldn't throw strikes, So we'll get
- 38:30Speaker 7: into that a little bit. And then the college sport.
- 38:33Speaker 7: I just wrote this down on my notes. College sports
- 38:35Speaker 7: are broken. Oh thanks, tips, really thanks. We'll get into
- 38:39Speaker 7: that a little bit too. The Brendon Soaresby situation, and
- 38:42Speaker 7: watch you weave it into something here down Montlake as well.
- 38:45Speaker 4: We'll do that all coming out. Oh, I bet you
- 38:47Speaker 4: have a pleasure doing that.
- 38:49Speaker 1: And Forness will do that with Anderson Hurst, who has
- 38:51Speaker 1: a team USA.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Is that a roll Don jersey on? No name on
- 38:56Speaker 4: the back? Oh, no name, Yeah, just a jersey. I'm
- 39:00Speaker 4: a fan of the team on the shuter back.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Thank you, sir, Anderson Hurst is USA World Cup jersey.
- 39:06Speaker 1: They join you next, Chris Kid, Greg Bell, appreciate you listening.
- 39:09Speaker 4: We'll do it again tend a noon.
- 39:11Speaker 1: I'll be at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center with Ian
- 39:13Speaker 1: tomorrow for the start of Seahawks' training camp on ninety
- 39:15Speaker 1: three points training camp Mini camp on ninety three point
- 39:19Speaker 1: three kJ RFM
