- 0:53Our true algorithm is the Holy Spirit, and
- 0:56let's begin by renewing our total consecration to
- 0:59Jesus through Mary, that we may do everything
- 1:02with, in, through, and for Mary as her
- 1:05instrument, so that she can lead us to
- 1:07more perfectly do everything with, in, through, and
- 1:10for Jesus.
- 1:12I, Marco Sandoval, a repentant sinner, renew and
- 1:16ratify today in your hands, O Immaculate Mother,
- 1:21the vows of my baptism.
- 1:23I renounce Satan and resolve to follow Jesus
- 1:26Christ even more closely than before.
- 1:28Mary, I give you my heart.
- 1:31Please set it on fire with love for
- 1:33Jesus.
- 1:34Make it always attentive to his burning thirst
- 1:37for love and for souls.
- 1:39Keep my heart in your most pure heart,
- 1:41that I may love Jesus and the members
- 1:43of his body with your own perfect love.
- 1:47Mary, I entrust myself totally to you, my
- 1:50body and soul, my goods, both interior and
- 1:54exterior, and even the value of all my
- 1:56good actions.
- 1:58Please make of me, of all that I
- 2:00am and have, whatever most pleases you.
- 2:03Let me be a fit instrument in your
- 2:05immaculate and merciful hands for bringing the greatest
- 2:08possible glory to God.
- 2:10If I fall, please lead me back to
- 2:13Jesus.
- 2:14Wash me in the blood and water that
- 2:16flow from his pure side, and help me
- 2:18never to lose my trust in this fountain
- 2:21of love and mercy.
- 2:23With you, O Immaculate Mother, you who always
- 2:26do the will of God, I unite myself
- 2:29to the perfect consecration of Jesus as he
- 2:32offers himself in the Spirit to the Father
- 2:34for the life of the world.
- 2:36Amen.
- 2:37Okay, so today we're joined by Father Carney.
- 2:41He'll be going over the manual of the
- 2:44Archon Fraternity of the Holy Face.
- 2:46This will be the third installment walking through
- 2:49the manual.
- 2:50So I'll turn it over to Father Carney.
- 2:53Yeah, so we've covered the beginning of the
- 2:58manual, and we're on page four, and we
- 3:01just went over last time about the Archbishop
- 3:06giving his blessing to, well I guess it
- 3:15was earlier, oh yeah, the approbation of the
- 3:18Archbishop.
- 3:20So today we're going to talk about how
- 3:23the devotion to Holy Face reached the Holy
- 3:27Father for the first time in 1884.
- 3:30That would be Pope Leo XIII.
- 3:33So they petitioned his holiness to see if
- 3:37this group in Tours could have some indulgences.
- 3:41And so it was pretty much protocol and
- 3:43canon law back then to do it like
- 3:45this.
- 3:46And so members that joined got a plenary
- 3:50indulgence on the day they joined, and then
- 3:53members that were already in it got a
- 3:55plenary indulgence when they died.
- 3:59Now, a plenary indulgence, that means full remission
- 4:01from punishment.
- 4:03So if someone dies in the state of
- 4:04grace and they have a plenary indulgence, that
- 4:07means they don't go to purgatory.
- 4:09So popes would decorate devotions and confraternities so
- 4:17that people would join them, so that they
- 4:19could have that benefit of not having to
- 4:21go to purgatory.
- 4:22Also, his holiness made the Feast of St.
- 4:26Peter an indulgence for the arch confraternity, for
- 4:30the members, plenary indulgence.
- 4:33And then he had some other small indulgences
- 4:37granted, and this all happened on the 9th
- 4:41of December 1884.
- 4:43So we'll find out there's going to be
- 4:45a few more briefs like that in the
- 4:47future, and eventually it's going to lead to
- 4:50erecting this confraternity at the time in 1884
- 4:54to an arch confraternity.
- 4:56And so it's very powerful that the Holy
- 4:59Father got involved in this, and so this
- 5:02devotion, the arch confraternity of the Holy Faith,
- 5:05is not a private devotion, it is a
- 5:07public devotion.
- 5:09And so stay tuned for future episodes where
- 5:12we'll discuss how it got elevated through a
- 5:16few steps before that point.
- 5:18And so that's all for now.
- 5:20So I'm curious just about confraternities in general.
- 5:24I think people may be not familiar with
- 5:27that terminology.
- 5:28Could you kind of explain what a confraternity
- 5:31is?
- 5:33Sure.
- 5:34So Catholics have a right to unite and
- 5:39form Catholic groups.
- 5:41We call them pious associations of the faithful.
- 5:44That doesn't mean the people are holy, that
- 5:45just means the people are trying to do
- 5:47things that are pious, pray, make reparation.
- 5:53And so the highest form of gatherings are
- 5:58first-order religious, so those are priests that
- 6:01have a rule of life and constitutions.
- 6:04A second order are nuns or sisters.
- 6:08And then a third order are lay people,
- 6:11and priests that are not religious can join
- 6:14those groups.
- 6:14And so an arch confraternity would be considered
- 6:17a fourth, but there is no such thing
- 6:19as a fourth, but it would be like
- 6:20the fourth level in canon law of how
- 6:23people can unite under a certain constitution, certain
- 6:28banner.
- 6:29So that's basically what an arch confraternity is.
- 6:34And the way that the arch confraternity of
- 6:37the Holy Faith is set up is that
- 6:38confraternities can be started in the diocese by
- 6:42the Bishop of the Holy Faith, and they
- 6:45can become aggregated to the arch confraternity, and
- 6:48that is underneath the Archbishop of Tours jurisdiction.
- 6:54And so he assigns a priest who's the
- 6:56director of the arch confraternity who works on
- 7:00these instruments in canon law to unite them.
- 7:03And so there's a lot of specifics that
- 7:04I can't get into about indulgences and how
- 7:06all that mechanics works.
- 7:09So that's what a confraternity is.
- 7:11In general, do you know about how many
- 7:13confraternities there are?
- 7:15I know there's a confraternity to the Rosary,
- 7:18which is also kind of a part of,
- 7:20you're encouraged to join the confraternity of the
- 7:23Rosary as part of this.
- 7:26And then do we have any idea how
- 7:29many confraternities of the Holy Faith there are
- 7:32spread out that are under the umbrella of
- 7:35Tours, or how many are in the United
- 7:36States at least?
- 7:38Yeah, in the United States there's roughly between
- 7:40100 and 200.
- 7:43A lot of them are not active.
- 7:46There might be five active out of all
- 7:49those.
- 7:50Around the world I would say there's somewhere
- 7:51between 500 and 1,000.
- 7:53I looked at the records back in 2024
- 7:56and I can't remember the details, but that
- 7:59gives you kind of an idea of that.
- 8:01Okay, and you mentioned indulgence.
- 8:04I think that's something out there that people
- 8:07that aren't Catholic aren't super familiar with, and
- 8:10sometimes I feel like there's a, oh there's
- 8:13a maybe some bad energy around that in
- 8:19the Protestant world.
- 8:20So could you just like kind of give
- 8:22a little short brief on what an indulgence
- 8:26is?
- 8:27So an indulgence means that the suffering of
- 8:32Jesus Christ and all his merits of redemption
- 8:34can be applied to certain souls specifically, and
- 8:38the Church has the power to do that.
- 8:42And so the reason why it gets a
- 8:44bad name is because Martin Luther, the first
- 8:48Protestant, brought it up as a bone to
- 8:51pick, and he really violated the truth of
- 8:56the matter of indulgences.
- 8:59So there is a purgatory, and there are
- 9:04times when our Lord talks about there's serious
- 9:07sin and not such serious sin, and so
- 9:10with mortal sin we know that if someone
- 9:12dies in mortal sin they will go to
- 9:14hell.
- 9:15But if someone dies with venial sin that
- 9:17hasn't had the satisfaction necessary to make up
- 9:22for it, then they have to go to
- 9:22purgatory.
- 9:23So what does satisfaction mean?
- 9:24I use the analogy of a boy who
- 9:27hits a baseball into the window of a
- 9:29neighbor, and he goes up to the neighbors
- 9:32and knocks and says, I busted your window
- 9:34and I'm sorry.
- 9:36Well the neighbor can say, yeah I forgive
- 9:38you but you still owe me $100, and
- 9:40so the boy needs to go and make
- 9:41$100 to satisfy his offense, even though he's
- 9:46been given forgiveness.
- 9:47That's what happens when Jesus forgives us when
- 9:50we are sorry for our sins.
- 9:53There's still payment that needs to be done,
- 9:55and the payment isn't from so much from
- 9:57us, but it's from the redemption of Jesus
- 9:59Christ.
- 10:00And so we give a little bit into
- 10:02that and then Jesus pays the rest for
- 10:03us, basically.
- 10:06Yeah, it's a pretty wonderful thing.
- 10:09The last thing I'm curious about, Pope Leo
- 10:12XIII.
- 10:14I've been doing quite a bit of research
- 10:16and study on other matters, and it's striking
- 10:19to me how often Pope Leo XIII continues
- 10:22to come up in all these various different
- 10:25things.
- 10:27I've been reading a lot about basically the
- 10:30Catholic state or the Christian state, and Pope
- 10:35Leo XIII figures so predominantly in that.
- 10:40So just a word about Pope Leo XIII
- 10:43and who he was and how important he
- 10:47was to the Church at the turn of
- 10:48the century.
- 10:48He was right at the 18 to 1900s.
- 10:52Yeah, he was one of the longest reigning
- 10:55Popes for decades.
- 10:56He was the Pope.
- 10:58He was the first man to be caught
- 10:59on motion film, so that might be interesting
- 11:02to filmmakers.
- 11:05And he was also the Pope of the
- 11:07Rosary.
- 11:07He wrote around a dozen encyclicals on the
- 11:11Rosary.
- 11:13So he's also the Pope that elevated the
- 11:21confraternity, the Holy Face, to an arch confraternity.
- 11:24And so he stamped his seal of approval,
- 11:27which we'll talk about later in other episodes,
- 11:30to the devotion to the Holy Face, which
- 11:32I spread all over the world.
- 11:37So Pope Leo XIII, I think, is a
- 11:39great Pope, and I hope someday that he'll
- 11:41get canonized.
- 11:43Yeah, that's one thing that struck me in
- 11:46reading about this devotion is like it took
- 11:48a long time to get recognized, and then
- 11:51once it was recognized, it went from confraternity
- 11:54to arch confraternity relatively quickly under Pope Leo
- 11:57XIII.
- 11:57Yeah, they asked Pope Leo XIII if he
- 12:01would consider making an arch confraternity, and it
- 12:03should have taken about a decade, but he
- 12:07elevated it at an instant.
- 12:10And so an arch confraternity elevated by a
- 12:12Pope means that it will exist until the
- 12:15end of time, so there's no destroying this.
- 12:19All right, very good.
- 12:20Until next time.
- 12:21Great.
- 12:22All right.
