- 0:31All right, open your Bibles to a couple of places, if you will.
- 0:33You can go to Second Samuel, Second Samuel, Chapter 6.
- 0:37We're gonna start there and then we're gonna weave into Acts
- 0:41Chapter 15, looking at the first couple of verses and the Bible
- 0:46study today is entitled Not everyone likes the doctrine of
- 0:52grace. It's a little long, but very
- 0:54descriptive because not everyone likes the freedom that you have
- 0:57in Christ. Not everyone likes your worship
- 1:00of Jesus. There are always those that want
- 1:04to take control of someone living in freedom.
- 1:07And you need to know that whenever you begin to see the
- 1:10hand of God's blessing, there are always those that push back.
- 1:14There are always those that aren't so happy.
- 1:16And there are a few people that show up in your life in the
- 1:19midst of great things or in the midst of great things in a
- 1:22church life, and they want to take control.
- 1:25They don't like freedom and they don't especially like your
- 1:29freedom. There are those that like to
- 1:31argue. They like to argue against the
- 1:34clear work of God. It happens now.
- 1:37It happened in the early church, and by the time we get to Acts
- 1:41chapter 15, the church couldn't be at a happier time.
- 1:47Not without difficulties, but just filled with the joy of the
- 1:50Lord. People are getting saved all
- 1:52over the place. The very first missionary
- 1:55journey, which was brand new, thinking just like you as a new
- 1:59believer so much in the church. It's brand new, brand new.
- 2:01Never heard it before, didn't know anything about it.
- 2:04That's how the early church is as we study in the book of Acts.
- 2:07These are brand new things. They don't know anything about a
- 2:09mission journey. They didn't know anything about
- 2:11going around the world. They were given direction by
- 2:14Jesus, but didn't know how it was going to live out.
- 2:16So you remember the they gathered together in the Church
- 2:20of Antioch. The Holy Spirit spoke separate
- 2:23to me, Paul and Barnabas. They sent them out on this first
- 2:26missionary journey, and it was an absolute success.
- 2:29A lot of warfare, a lot of resistance, but a lot of
- 2:33success. People are getting saved,
- 2:36Churches are being planted, leaderships being appointed,
- 2:39Cities are being literally turned upside down for Jesus.
- 2:44And you can jot it down in John chapter 14 and verse 12.
- 2:48They're living out the promises of God.
- 2:51We emphasize greatly here when I when I emphasize greatly when I
- 2:54teach the Bible that you hold on to the promises of God.
- 2:58Hold on to them even if you can't see them, even if they
- 3:01don't seem like they're realistic to you.
- 3:04The promises of God. Everything in Christ is yes and
- 3:07Amen and you can trust him and they're living this out because
- 3:11it would be hard to go wow, how Jesus would say something go I
- 3:14don't even I don't even understand what you're meaning.
- 3:17How could I do something greater than you?
- 3:19Jesus. But notice what he said in John
- 3:2114 and verse 12, he says. Most assuredly I say to you, he
- 3:25who believes in me, the works I do, he'll do also, and greater
- 3:30works than these he will do because I go to my father,
- 3:33they're doing greater works. The more ministry's taken place
- 3:37in the first few years of the church in in terms of churches,
- 3:41planet and people reached, than the three years, all the years
- 3:44that Jesus was on the earth. And he intended it to be so as
- 3:48he was training and preparing them so wherever they went and
- 3:52preach the gospel Jesus through them.
- 3:55Save people, families being rescued, marriage is being
- 3:59healed. Kids waking up to a different
- 4:01home. Imagine that.
- 4:03One night kids go home, their kids, their parents are lost, as
- 4:06lost can be, and the very next morning it's a brand new house.
- 4:11Generational change. But not everyone's happy about
- 4:14this. You need to have your eyes wide
- 4:17open on this. Not everybody is happy with
- 4:20progress or with change, or when God is moving in a wonderful
- 4:27way. And it's a good reminder today
- 4:30that we understand conflicts and disagreements happen among
- 4:34believers, especially in the room right now.
- 4:37If you just think in the room right now, or people connected
- 4:39to us by the thousands outside of this room, you got to just
- 4:43think. We all don't think the same
- 4:45thing about everything. There will be conflict and
- 4:48disagreements among us in the body of Christ.
- 4:51I mean, the best way to describe this, I guess is you could talk
- 4:54to newlyweds, let's give them about six months, and then we'll
- 4:57interview them six months later. And and you, you talk to them.
- 5:02And one of the things that they found out is that they're very
- 5:05different people. They do the the toilet paper
- 5:09over under wrong. They do toothpaste different.
- 5:12They like their eggs cooked this way.
- 5:14I mean, Maria and I, we've been married 34 years and we still
- 5:17like our eggs cooked differently.
- 5:19Like, it's just like, do you want breakfast?
- 5:20I don't know. I don't like really Well, I'm
- 5:22not cooking using anything. Well, that's fine.
- 5:24I could cook my own eggs. It's fine.
- 5:26It's all right. I disagree with you.
- 5:28I don't think scrambled eggs are the best way to cook eggs and
- 5:34that just. I know how to divide the room
- 5:36very quickly, you know, but you know, you just don't agree.
- 5:42It doesn't mean it's bad. I don't necessarily mean, like
- 5:45on the worst scale, you just find out you're different.
- 5:50It's not bad yet. It's just normal because it
- 5:55can't get bad. It can be bad here, like you
- 5:58think of the things in this room right now.
- 6:00The disagreements in the room doesn't aren't necessarily bad
- 6:04yet, because the real issue with disagreements is not that they
- 6:10exist. And the real issue with
- 6:12disagreements is not that they happen.
- 6:15The real issue is how you respond to them.
- 6:19That's the key, how we respond and react.
- 6:23Now, I want you to remember that because, you know the
- 6:26disagreements of things are highlighted for us, you need to
- 6:29understand that the people that God uses are imperfect people,
- 6:35imperfect. All of us.
- 6:37We're all imperfect. That's all God has to work with.
- 6:40He He doesn't have any perfect people.
- 6:42There's no one that just arrived ready to go.
- 6:45We're all imperfect. And So what does God do with our
- 6:48imperfections? I guess the Let me let me step
- 6:52back for a second and say this. The real root of the
- 6:55imperfections in our lives, the real cause of most issues in our
- 6:59lives is we like to do things our way and we just have it our
- 7:04way. You notice how I describe the
- 7:06egg situation favoring my way. I just thinking of that right
- 7:11now. I didn't mean to do that, but
- 7:13that's one of my imperfections. I favored my way.
- 7:17Marie's way is still wrong, but I favored my way.
- 7:21It's fine if she might watch it online.
- 7:22And sorry, honey, but you know, don't stop cooking me breakfast,
- 7:26please. Every 3rd day.
- 7:28I'm all right with it, you know? But we like things our way, and
- 7:31that causes a lot of friction. My way or the highway even can
- 7:35be really bad, and that's not helpful.
- 7:37We need to learn how to meet in the middle.
- 7:40You know, what God does. God allows us to do our own
- 7:42thing and then suffer the consequences so that we can
- 7:45learn that His way is better. We'll learn that.
- 7:49But the only way to learn it is to go through it.
- 7:51I want to show you, I asked you to open a second Samuel.
- 7:53I want to show you a time in King David's life where God
- 7:57allowed him to do something his way and he suffered the
- 8:00consequences for it. Notice in Second Samuel chapter
- 8:036 and verse 3. It's a very glorious time in the
- 8:07nation of Israel. The Ark of the Covenant's coming
- 8:09back. And so notice it says, they set
- 8:12the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the House of
- 8:15Abinadab that was on a hill. And Uzza and Ohio, the sons of
- 8:21Abinadab drove the new cart and they brought it out of the House
- 8:26of Abinadab, which was on the hill accompanying the Ark of
- 8:29God. And Ohio went before the Ark.
- 8:31Then David and all the House of Israel played music before the
- 8:35Lord, and all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on
- 8:38harps, string instruments, tambourines, sistrums, and on
- 8:41symbols. And when they came to Natan's
- 8:44threshing floor, Uzza put out his hand to the ark of God and
- 8:48took hold of it, for the oxen had stumbled.
- 8:51But the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzza, and God
- 8:55struck him there for his error, and he died there by the ark of
- 8:58God. And you're like man, that's a
- 9:00dramatic situation. And it is.
- 9:04And if you know the Old Testament, it's one of the
- 9:05reason why we studied through the entire Bible here.
- 9:08And it's been many years since we went verse by verse through
- 9:10these books, but they're all up online.
- 9:13All the New Testament I've taught through and about half of
- 9:16the Old Testament, I've made it through.
- 9:17We studied this. And if you know the scriptures,
- 9:21you know that they're transporting the ark of the
- 9:23covenant the wrong way. They were not to put it on a
- 9:27cart. They weren't to roll it around.
- 9:29They weren't just to let anybody's sons go with it, but
- 9:33they nonetheless did it at David's instruction.
- 9:38And it makes sense. There's nothing here really
- 9:41would be cause for alarm. David was in the place of
- 9:44authority. He gave the instruction.
- 9:46They're going along. It's going fine until the oxen
- 9:50stumbles and the ark of the covenant falls and other does
- 9:53what is very natural. He stand, he takes out his hand
- 9:56and he steadies it. So it would be worse for it to
- 9:59fall than than anything. So they don't want it on the
- 10:02floor he touches, which is it? And that was a great failure on
- 10:06his part, and he lost his life as a result.
- 10:09You see, God allowed David and these men to go their own way.
- 10:13This is a classic example. This is a classic example in the
- 10:17Bible. There's many of them where David
- 10:20is doing the right thing, get that Ark of the covenant back to
- 10:24Jerusalem the wrong way. And I want you to notice, God
- 10:28allows you. He allows you and me to do the
- 10:31right things, even the wrong way so that we can learn.
- 10:36Because, you know, David, he goes back into the word of God
- 10:38at the rest of the chapter, and he finds out, you know what, we
- 10:41were wrong. We needed to do it this way.
- 10:43And he gets things right. He figures out that he had gone
- 10:47against God's command because the word of God shed light on
- 10:51this. And of course, we all, you know,
- 10:54you're in a church that emphasizes the Bible, wants you
- 10:56to read it, pray every day. Like like you, that this is the
- 10:59major failure of the church today.
- 11:02The major failure of the church today is that men and women
- 11:04don't know the Bible. And you don't want to know the
- 11:07Bible. And I don't know who I'm
- 11:08speaking to in particular, but you don't want to play.
- 11:11You don't want to spend the time investing in the word of God.
- 11:14You don't want to spend the time to go a little bit extra.
- 11:16And it's just hurting you more than you realize.
- 11:19And it's hurting our culture. It's hurting our church because
- 11:23you don't know the word. You go, But I'm doing the right
- 11:24thing. I'm doing the right thing.
- 11:25I know. But you're doing it wrong.
- 11:28And how would you ever know that You need to know the word of
- 11:31God. It's very, very important
- 11:35because eventually, you know, as you're a true believer, if you
- 11:37do the right thing the wrong way, I'm telling you you'll get
- 11:40back into the word of God. How many people this New Year is
- 11:43going to come back to the things of the Lord?
- 11:45Because 2023 was so bad, Because they were apart from God's word.
- 11:50Because they were apart from walking with Jesus closely,
- 11:53Because they did dabble over here and they did try this over
- 11:56here and they used their freedom over there only to find out what
- 11:59we've been warning them and warning them and warning them
- 12:02and warning them for here in Colorado, 24 years, we just
- 12:05celebrated it. 24 years I've spent my life teaching,
- 12:09instructing, correcting and warning anyone that'll listen to
- 12:13me. But now, you know, welcome back.
- 12:16I'm glad you're back. But it was a painful way to
- 12:19learn, wasn't it? You know, we can learn by
- 12:21example, but it doesn't have to be our example, and it doesn't
- 12:24even have to be example of the people with us.
- 12:26We can learn from the examples in God's Word.
- 12:29These are real people, and if they made a mistake, we don't
- 12:32want to repeat it. And one of the mistakes David
- 12:34made is he got too excited, too emotional, and he just jumped in
- 12:39and did something and and did something.
- 12:42But he did the right thing, the wrong way, and we want to be
- 12:45careful. And that's one thing I've always
- 12:46appreciated about this particular family of churches,
- 12:49family of churches I'm a part of because I got saved in a Calvary
- 12:52Chapel. And one of the things I've
- 12:53always appreciated is our desire, our desire to go God's
- 12:59way with our, with our church philosophy and leadership.
- 13:02Are we perfect? No, never.
- 13:05We're of course, we're not perfect, but our desire is to
- 13:08stick as close to the word as possible, to be led by the
- 13:12Spirit. You know, being led by the
- 13:14Spirit has two parts to it, a very exciting part where God's
- 13:18opening doors and amazing things are happening, and also a very
- 13:23exciting thing when God is closing doors.
- 13:25But we don't really appreciate the closed doors as much as the
- 13:28open doors. But sometimes we just got to let
- 13:31things go. And sometimes God is just
- 13:33saying, OK, enough, it's time, it's time to move forward, time
- 13:37to move on. You can't go in this direction.
- 13:40Hey, either one is from the Lord and we need that to try to stick
- 13:44as close to the Lord as possible disagreements among us.
- 13:49And I know I'm building up a a strong introduction because
- 13:52we've got a few more studies in chapter 15.
- 13:55But I want you to understand disagreements happen in the
- 13:58church. One of the ways the Bible
- 13:59describes the church is as a family.
- 14:02And you know as well as I do and all of our families there have
- 14:05been, there have been and maybe our current disagreements.
- 14:09Is there an Amen on that? We all have families.
- 14:12And you know, the world kind of has put families into two
- 14:16categories. There are the dysfunctional
- 14:18families and the not so dysfunctional families, I guess,
- 14:21or whatever. But the Bible doesn't have two
- 14:23categories. There's only one category of
- 14:25family. You want to know what it is
- 14:26Dysfunctional. Every single one of our families
- 14:29is not what a God intended. And we're all been marred by
- 14:33sin, Some unfortunately, more than others.
- 14:36Some of you have experienced great, great the greatest source
- 14:39of pain has been in your family. And I'm sorry, that's not God's
- 14:43ideal. But you know, you made it
- 14:46through God's healing you, and you're strong, Some of you, some
- 14:50of the greatest pain you've ever felt has been in a church
- 14:53family. And you know, I'm sorry, but
- 14:56pain happens in families and God is healing you, and you're
- 14:59moving forward. But I have to say this, Whatever
- 15:02pain you're facing, how you respond is most important,
- 15:06because you can make things worse.
- 15:08You can make things worse for yourself.
- 15:10Something happened. You don't like a decision made,
- 15:13a situation happening, a conflict.
- 15:16If you don't handle it correctly, you're going to make
- 15:18it worse for yourself. And here's something that
- 15:21happens in our culture that you got to understand you.
- 15:23You you have to. It's just like a reminder today,
- 15:25right? Because you live in the culture,
- 15:28you shop in the culture, you work in the culture.
- 15:30Like you breathe it in and out all the time.
- 15:31Don't you think for a moment that it doesn't affect you?
- 15:35Don't you think for a moment that you don't walk into this
- 15:37room with thoughts that are completely unbiblical because of
- 15:41the world that we live in, the social media you're on all the
- 15:43time? Of course the the world tries to
- 15:46describe, or the church describes that as the world view
- 15:49and it just comes in and out. We have to, we have to
- 15:51acknowledge it. We have to open the word of God,
- 15:53let it be a mirror in our lives, and let God speak to us and
- 15:57change the way we think and renew our minds.
- 15:59And here's one thing that really you have to come to terms with
- 16:02if you want to make progress in walking with the Lord.
- 16:06And that is the world doesn't like to take personal
- 16:09responsibility for their own actions.
- 16:12They like to blame others. They like to play the martyr and
- 16:15the victim. And that will hurt you because
- 16:19there's only one martyr in the Bible and his name is Jesus
- 16:22Christ. And he took the pain and the
- 16:25penalty of your sin and mine. And until you and I learn how to
- 16:29take personal responsibility for our own decisions, then you're
- 16:34going to keep making things worse for yourself.
- 16:37And you're going to become angry, frustrated, bitter,
- 16:40depressed, discouraged because you're not allowing God to do
- 16:44his perfect work in your life. And I have to ask you, you know,
- 16:49and it's worth asking. You don't have to answer it.
- 16:51I'm not asking for an out loud answer but you you've been
- 16:54blaming people and it's some always someone else's fault and
- 16:57and I'm and I'm not even talking about like like like it's like
- 17:01what happened to you is real. So yes it's fine what happened
- 17:05to you is real but by always blaming them and being upset
- 17:09with them and not forgiving them how's that working out for you?
- 17:13What's the end result? What are you doing for the
- 17:16Kingdom of God? How is it affecting you
- 17:19emotionally or your spiritual life?
- 17:22I wonder what what kind of spiritual battles you've been
- 17:25losing lately. Just to say, you know what?
- 17:28What, what? Really what's what?
- 17:29What I control is how I responded.
- 17:32And you know, Lord, I just got so mad.
- 17:34I wasn't. I wasn't.
- 17:35I wasn't in the spirit. I was sinning in my anger.
- 17:39And Lord, I just come to you. I don't want to be angry anymore
- 17:43and you don't got to answer that prayer.
- 17:45But if you continue down this path, it's only going to get
- 17:47worse. You've got to take
- 17:49responsibility and let the Lord do that work, especially in
- 17:53disagreements, because the enemy loves division.
- 17:56He loves to perpetuate division. He loves to do it personally.
- 18:00He wants everybody not liking each other.
- 18:02He likes to do it doctrinally. So there's confusion.
- 18:05And that's where Acts 15 is. There's a doctrinal division
- 18:08coming on into the church that's carried by people, and we're
- 18:14going to spend some time looking at these verses today that it's
- 18:17important that you realize that disagreements happen, but how
- 18:21you respond to them is the most important part of the
- 18:25disagreement. It's the way it is.
- 18:27So we need to learn how to respond to them.
- 18:29The key is exactly where do we draw the line, especially
- 18:32doctrinally. And someone once said it's been
- 18:35attributed to many people, but I'll quote it here in Essentials
- 18:38Unity. In non Essentials Liberty and in
- 18:42all things Charity or love and the dangers of disagreements is
- 18:46how we respond. So let's pick up now chapter 15.
- 18:50That's an introduction for most of the rest of the studies in
- 18:5315. But notice in verse one and
- 18:57certain men. OK, let's pause there.
- 19:00Let's go back a couple verses and remember where we are.
- 19:03Chapter 14, verse 27. When they'd come together, when
- 19:07they had come and gathered the church together, reported all
- 19:11that God had done and that he had opened the door of fate to
- 19:14the Gentiles. They stayed there a long time
- 19:16with the disciples, and certain men came down.
- 19:20This is an exciting time in the life of the church.
- 19:22Paul and Barnabas came back. They had this great testimony.
- 19:26We looked at it last time. I doubt that they shared all the
- 19:28difficulties, although I'm sure they shared some of them.
- 19:31But it's like, you won't believe this.
- 19:32There's salvation happening. People are listening.
- 19:35They try to stop it, But then we just moved on.
- 19:37And. And you know, Paul, man, you
- 19:39won't believe it. He almost died, but he ran right
- 19:40back into the city. It was amazing.
- 19:42They're sharing all that God had done.
- 19:45And then certain men mark that in your Bibles you like to
- 19:49write. In your Bibles, it's always
- 19:51certain men. It's always a small group of
- 19:54people that like to stir up strife.
- 19:56In the church. It's never the majority.
- 19:58It's always just a few people, Certain men.
- 20:02I don't want you to read over this word.
- 20:03This is very significant because there are certain people that
- 20:06like to stir up strife in your life too.
- 20:09They just don't want to submit their lives to God.
- 20:12Now these certain men, there might be a genuineness in them.
- 20:16We don't quite know, but what message they brought was really
- 20:20bad, and it's in contrast to the testimony in verse 27.
- 20:24Notice again, certain men came down from Judea.
- 20:27They started to teach the Brethren.
- 20:30Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of
- 20:33Moses, you cannot be saved. Wow, circumcision in order to be
- 20:43saved. I don't think I want to be
- 20:45saved. I mean, that's what that's what
- 20:50they're teaching here. You need to go through a
- 20:52physical, painful process in order to be saved.
- 20:58It can't. They're basically coming and
- 20:59saying it can't be as easy as what Paul and Barnabas are
- 21:03teaching that Jesus died on the cross and forgave you of your
- 21:06sins and you can follow him. No, no, no, no, no.
- 21:08If you really want to be saved, you need to be cut and follow
- 21:13the law. Then you can be saved.
- 21:17And this is a very dangerous moment in the life of the
- 21:20church. There are always those that want
- 21:23to throw a wet blanket on the joy and the progress of the
- 21:26Christian faith. And if again, if you like to
- 21:29write in your bibles, you could write next to verse one,
- 21:31legalism. There is a a hint of legalism
- 21:35here. And what is legalism?
- 21:37They give you a simple definition.
- 21:39It's adding anything to the simple gospel in order to be
- 21:43saved. That's what legalism is.
- 21:45When you start making rules and regulations as a requirement of
- 21:50salvation, then you become a legalist.
- 21:53And there are many, many, many that hold the legalism today.
- 21:58And that's what they're doing here It you can't be saved that
- 22:01easy. You can't.
- 22:03That's not. That's what they're saying.
- 22:04And they started teaching them. No, no, no.
- 22:06This is how you're saved circumcision, and you need to
- 22:09keep the law. Which circumcision could be
- 22:13done. Keeping the law couldn't be
- 22:16done. Paul spent the whole time in the
- 22:18book of Romans teaching us that he told us what the purpose of
- 22:21the law was. For the purpose of the law was
- 22:24to show us that we can't keep the law.
- 22:28Just like when you drove to church today a little faster
- 22:30than you should have. You know what busted you?
- 22:34Not your speedometer and maybe not even an Aurora police
- 22:38officer. You know what busted you?
- 22:40The sign. When you drove past the sign and
- 22:44the sign had a number that didn't match your speedometer,
- 22:46the law revealed to you that you were a lawbreaker, you bunch of
- 22:51sinners on your way to church. Some of you didn't even pay.
- 22:56I didn't even know there were signs.
- 22:57There are signs that tell you how fast to drive the law.
- 23:02You can't keep the law. We're all lawbreakers.
- 23:05Every single one of us, even if we did our best efforts, there
- 23:09may be some moment, you know, you're trying to get a pregnant
- 23:11woman to the hospital or you're trying to out.
- 23:13Like there's always exceptions, but even an exception is still
- 23:18breaking the law, and that's the way it is.
- 23:21So what they're what what they're doing here is they're
- 23:24bringing in false teaching into the new church.
- 23:28And we know if you want to look at verse 24 of chapter 15, they
- 23:32came from Jerusalem. They came from Jerusalem, but
- 23:36Jerusalem didn't send them. Now let me just say I'm using
- 23:39city names here. When I mentioned Jerusalem in
- 23:42the early church, that was the headquarters of the early
- 23:45church, predominantly a Jewish. That's where the Holy Spirit was
- 23:49poured out. That's where the first church
- 23:50was planted. That's where persecution came
- 23:53and believers left Jerusalem. Do you guys remember we've
- 23:55studied through the book of Acts.
- 23:57So when I mentioned Jerusalem here in the context of Acts,
- 23:59this is headquarters for the early church.
- 24:02So they came from headquarters, the region of headquarters.
- 24:06But they weren't sent you notice in verse 24 as they're
- 24:09answering. So we're going to get into this
- 24:11later. But they're answering the issue.
- 24:13And it says, since we have heard that some of you went out from
- 24:16us, troubled you with words, unsettling your soul, saying you
- 24:20must be circumcised to keep the law.
- 24:23To whom? We gave no such commandment.
- 24:27They were not authorized messengers of the headquarters
- 24:30of the church, if you will. They were speaking on their own
- 24:33behalf and sometimes people will do that here.
- 24:36They'll speak as if they're speaking for our church, but
- 24:37they're not. Has nothing to do with our
- 24:40church. Well, you know, I go to church
- 24:42there and they're name dropping, but they have no relationship
- 24:45here. And they might have come through
- 24:47and they might have attended, they might even been in
- 24:49leadership. But there are those.
- 24:51You just have to understand that the churches are places where
- 24:54false doctrine are always trying to be sprinkled.
- 24:58There are. We've seen our fair share over
- 25:00the years of false teachers here.
- 25:01You know that. We've seen our fair share in the
- 25:04past, and we will see our fair share in the future.
- 25:07That's why God has established the elders and the pastors to
- 25:11make sure that false teaching doesn't take root in this
- 25:14church. It's not like it won't show up.
- 25:16It'll always show up. People come here all the time
- 25:19wanting to spread their own little deal.
- 25:21I mean, last night I came in because we had the week off.
- 25:24So Pastor Everett's not feeling well.
- 25:25So I I had to open all his mail as the administrator of the
- 25:28church and open all my mail, and wouldn't you know it, there was
- 25:32a package. He actually got two of them
- 25:35addressed to Pastor Everett, two big thick envelopes.
- 25:38And I counted last night. I thought there were 30, but
- 25:41there were actually 16 page letter of doctrinal nonsense
- 25:46addressed to Everett. I don't know what he subscribed
- 25:48to, but he's getting all the letters.
- 25:51And we don't have time for that nonsense.
- 25:53But you get letters. That's why.
- 25:55That's why we. You know, I remember back in, I
- 25:57started thinking back in the first time I was exposed to this
- 26:00was at the Harvest Crusades. You familiar with them?
- 26:03Pastor Greg Laurie. They started in Southern Cal as
- 26:06a new believer. We got saved just when they were
- 26:09starting. And we would go and take the
- 26:10kids and we'd invite people to harvest Crusades.
- 26:13And I'm telling you, every single Harvest Crusade has
- 26:17people in the parking lot protesting, yelling, screaming
- 26:21with big signs. Not a really effective
- 26:23evangelism tool, but I promise you, they're picking people off.
- 26:27They're picking. It may not be many, but how many
- 26:29is too many? One is too many to get ripped
- 26:33off with false teaching, but they're there.
- 26:35And then I thought back to California again when I was
- 26:38serving there, where they used to be, there were people that
- 26:40would go through the parking lot putting things on windshields.
- 26:43And then it happened here. And then it happened when we
- 26:47were meeting on Thursday nights, Wednesday nights.
- 26:49And that's why we have a brand new ministry, just scrolling
- 26:51through, strolling through the parking lot, making sure you
- 26:54don't get ripped off by some weird doctrine on your
- 26:56windshield, like why? Why would they come to a church?
- 27:00Is that how strong their message is?
- 27:02Their message is so strong, they would come to people, people who
- 27:05were already committed to the word of God, to try to rip you
- 27:07off. And it's true.
- 27:09They do. They want two things from you.
- 27:12They want two things from you #1 You know what?
- 27:14They want your money. They want your money.
- 27:19They want to rip you off financially.
- 27:21They they want it to catch your year so that you so believe in
- 27:25their nonsense that you begin to follow them.
- 27:28But you know what they want more than your money.
- 27:30It's interesting. They want something even more
- 27:32than your money. You know what they want you.
- 27:36They want you. The enemy wants to destroy your
- 27:40life. And one of the tools that he'll
- 27:42use is false teaching. And so we don't allow that here.
- 27:46That's why we don't allow anything to be just put on the
- 27:48counters around here or passed out around here.
- 27:51The answer is no. You can't do that here, Even
- 27:54good or bad, you can't do that here because the people in our
- 27:57church are not for you to take advantage of with whatever
- 28:01you're into, whether it's good or bad.
- 28:04We don't. We, we everything has to be
- 28:05approved. It has to go through the right
- 28:08authority because, look, we have one singular purpose here, and
- 28:12it's not so. You walk out with 30 Flyers.
- 28:14It's so you come to hear the Bible and you're changed.
- 28:17That's it. And you, you, you.
- 28:19I don't know. You might hear you go, man, Ed,
- 28:21you're kind of strong on that. I am.
- 28:24You're right. I am.
- 28:25I hope you're happy you're in a church that a pastor cares that
- 28:28you don't get ripped off by false teaching.
- 28:29Well, Ed, you're a little overboard.
- 28:31Yeah. I don't know.
- 28:31I don't know how overboard you can.
- 28:33Jesus went into the temple and he flipped tables over.
- 28:36So I don't know, but I I have. You just got to understand the
- 28:39weirdness that I deal with all the time.
- 28:40I deal with this stuff all the time, All the time.
- 28:45I can tell you a story because I remember it right down this
- 28:48right down this middle section here few years ago and probably
- 28:52right right after we moved in pretty close to when we moved
- 28:55in. There's a guy at the end of
- 28:57service walking in with a big black trench coat, bad idea.
- 29:01It was summertime you know all the security surrounding him and
- 29:05and he's like he wanted he came in he wanted a lot of attention.
- 29:08One of the things I like to do is I like to engage people if I
- 29:10can welcome him. How you doing?
- 29:12So I went, I went down. It was after service.
- 29:14I went down and gauged and back in the I'm not pointing at any
- 29:17of you. You guys are all clear.
- 29:18Everything's fine. I'm pointing down the middle.
- 29:20And so I am going gauge him and he introduces himself.
- 29:23He says Hello, I'm Michael the Archangel.
- 29:28Welcome to our church. Michael the Archangel went into
- 29:31his back pocket, pulled out a business card.
- 29:34You know what it said, Michael, the Archangel Angels carry
- 29:39business cards. And he came with some weird
- 29:41thing. And he's like, I'm like, bro, I
- 29:43don't think God sent you here. Who do you think you are?
- 29:46I'm the pastor of this church. I don't think God sent you here.
- 29:49And unless you repent, we're going to walk you right out the
- 29:51doors. You're not welcome here.
- 29:53You're out of your mind. I don't know what I said, but
- 29:55that's what I'm thinking right now.
- 29:57Says, this church is not for you to do anything to the people of
- 30:00this church. And if you don't change, we're
- 30:02going to. And that's exactly what they
- 30:04did. They walked him out all the way.
- 30:06And we pray that he would repent before he got to the sidewalk
- 30:09because that's the only way he'd be welcome here is if he
- 30:12repented and came to know the Lord.
- 30:14He's not Michael the Archangel. He had no wings.
- 30:16He didn't even carry a Bible. But people like that.
- 30:19They, I mean, and some of you guys, you guys remember we had
- 30:22the protester out here for a while screaming and yelling at
- 30:25you. That's a great way to win you
- 30:27over. You guys, he's a liar.
- 30:30He's a liar. The one of the guys that
- 30:32protests here, he's just mad at me because he didn't like my
- 30:35answer on the radio. That's it.
- 30:37And he doesn't want to handle it biblically.
- 30:39So he's into some weird teaching and he's once he thinks the best
- 30:42way to get his teaching across is to scream and yell at your
- 30:46kids when you drive to church. That doesn't sound like Jesus to
- 30:49me. Like we can have a disagreement
- 30:51and it's OK to have disagreements, but I really
- 30:54disagree with a guy that he, you know, obviously he can do it
- 30:57legally. We try to get the cops.
- 30:58We try to can't do anything to him.
- 31:01So we start giving him doughnuts.
- 31:02That didn't work. Start giving him water that
- 31:04didn't work. You know, the guys are out there
- 31:06trying to hug him. That doesn't work.
- 31:09But what we just need to do is pray.
- 31:10Because those types of people have, I made my point clear
- 31:13enough. They they just hang around the
- 31:15church all the time and you've got to be careful.
- 31:18But not it's not just the church anymore.
- 31:20The pandemic. When we were going through the
- 31:22pandemic together, you heard this over and over again and and
- 31:26I know I kind of get laughs. I need to get some kind of
- 31:28laughter here because what I'm saying is hard.
- 31:32But YouTube? And all the guys out there, they
- 31:34also can rip you off. The Bible says such, says that
- 31:39in the last days the church won't endure sound doctrine and
- 31:43they're going to go looking for people that'll itch and scratch
- 31:45the itch in their ears doctrinally.
- 31:47And many people have been ripped off.
- 31:49I mean some real special, wonderful people in our church
- 31:52have been ripped off during that time because they got some.
- 31:56Somebody got their ear, and really from the ear to the
- 32:00pocketbook to the life, and now they're off on weird doctrine
- 32:04and weird stuff. Where church, if you knew your
- 32:09Bible. You would know.
- 32:13That you're saved by grace. You would know that it it
- 32:16doesn't. I'll show you by the end of our
- 32:18Bible study. It's very simple, but people
- 32:21love to do this. The Colts love to do this, and I
- 32:23know it's hard. I know it's challenging that
- 32:26when you make a decision like you make a decision to leave
- 32:29something like that, there's a lot of pressure and a lot of lot
- 32:32of stuff that come against you. But you've got to stick to the
- 32:35word. So if somebody came, I mean,
- 32:38think about this again, Acts, chapter 15, verse one.
- 32:41I had a guest here. Let's just say I had a guest
- 32:43here filling this pulpit because I'm off teaching at a conference
- 32:46or something and he gets up here and goes Oak Church.
- 32:48I just want to let you know Pastor Ed has been wrong all
- 32:51these years. We are now going to have a
- 32:53circumcision service because you can't be saved just by faith in
- 32:58the blood of Jesus. You also have to be circumcised.
- 33:01And I'm like, man, I hope you just get up.
- 33:04If you're in any church like that, leave.
- 33:08Leave. Call me If something ever
- 33:09happens like that, call me. Go.
- 33:11Ed, you will not believe you had some dude in the Pope that went.
- 33:14I know. I don't know where he got that,
- 33:15Bro, I'm so sorry. It's my fault.
- 33:17I can't believe he dropped out on you.
- 33:19That's not what the Bible says. If you would just know your.
- 33:23Bible. You could dismiss this right
- 33:25away, but this is a serious moment in the early church.
- 33:29It's going to require as you read the rest of chapter 15,
- 33:31they're going to have a conference together to really
- 33:34wrestle this out and and really come to the conclusion that we
- 33:39now, because they don't have the book of Ephesians, they don't
- 33:41have Titus yet, they don't have it all written out.
- 33:44They just have the teachings of Jesus, which was enough, but
- 33:47they've got to talk it out and they're going to notice verse 2
- 33:50now. So these guys come down, these
- 33:52certain men, they come down. And therefore, when Paul and
- 33:56Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they
- 34:00determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of
- 34:03them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about
- 34:07this question. So being sent on their way by
- 34:10the church, they pass through Phoenicia and Samaria,
- 34:13describing the conversion of the Gentiles, and they cause great
- 34:16joy to all the brethren. This is so cool.
- 34:20So Paul and Barnabas, they take a stand and you know Luke as
- 34:24he's writing here in Acts. He uses that phrase.
- 34:28No small He does this a few times.
- 34:30He's using the diminutive to emphasize something.
- 34:33So when you say, hey, that's no small argument, that means it's
- 34:36huge. It wasn't little.
- 34:39And there's two things here I don't want you to think of right
- 34:42away. Like, they're arguing.
- 34:43Like screaming and yelling. They're not.
- 34:45First of all, in verse 2, the word dissension actually means
- 34:50reasoning. So Paul and Barnabas, they stand
- 34:53up and they stop this teaching by trying to reason with these
- 34:57certain men. But the certain men almost
- 35:00always like Michael the Archangel.
- 35:02They're unreasonable. And I'm sorry I said that he.
- 35:05Wasn't the dude. I don't know what his name was,
- 35:07but the dude in the jacket, he's not.
- 35:10He's not reasonable. He he would.
- 35:12The first thing we did with him was not walk him outside.
- 35:15The first thing we did with him was try to reason with him, tell
- 35:18him the truth and see where he stands.
- 35:20So there was a reasoning there where they took a stand for the
- 35:24truth. When that didn't work, notice
- 35:26the next word there. And again, you can write this in
- 35:28in your Bible. The original Greek for
- 35:31dissension is reasoning. And then the original Greek for
- 35:35dispute is now. They took a strong stand.
- 35:38They became stronger. It's like enough is enough.
- 35:41And because of that they go, you know what, I think we need to go
- 35:44to Jerusalem. They're disrupting.
- 35:46This was missionary journey, missionary journey, missionary
- 35:49journey. And now the enemy's throwing a
- 35:51wrench into it. Now they're stopping the
- 35:52progress, and that happens. It happens all the time.
- 35:57I mean, I I wish we would have wrote down over the years the
- 35:59times that happened here. I'd have a whole list, Progress,
- 36:02progress. Now I got to spend 2 weeks
- 36:04taking care of this problem, when really I should be moving
- 36:07in this direction, studying, praying, preparing, launching
- 36:11outreaches. But then we got this over here
- 36:12we got to take care of. And that's what they're doing
- 36:15here. It's not that we won't take care
- 36:17of it, we will. But it hinders the progress.
- 36:23It's like, come on. What's going on?
- 36:26Well, they're. Going to go to Jerusalem and I
- 36:28wonder if Paul thought for a moment, man, they're not going
- 36:31to listen to me in Jerusalem. They're not.
- 36:34They're not going to I'm not going to get a fair shake.
- 36:36Now we're going on their home territory.
- 36:38But he goes nonetheless. And notice in verse three it
- 36:41says being sent on their way, they passed through Phoenicia
- 36:44and Samaria and they just kept sharing the gospel and they
- 36:47talked about the conversion of the Gentiles and and they caused
- 36:50great joy to the Brethren. So these false brethren, the
- 36:57certain men, they thought and they taught that you had to 1st
- 37:01become a Jew, then you could be saved like Gentiles had to be
- 37:04Jewish first. But then we learn in Romans
- 37:07that's not God's will. God's will was to take Gentiles
- 37:09and graft them in and that most of us were all Gentiles and so
- 37:14they're were grafted. And you don't have to become a
- 37:16Jew first. That's the old covenant.
- 37:20The old covenant We again we learn in the Bible was replaced
- 37:23by what? The new covenant.
- 37:27Every time we share communion together, we are declaring the
- 37:30new covenant of God, not the old.
- 37:33The old has been replaced with the new.
- 37:38So by faith in Jesus Christ, you and I actually keep the entirety
- 37:43of the old covenant. Did you know that?
- 37:45Like some people will go, you know, why don't you?
- 37:47Why don't you worship on the Sabbath?
- 37:49You know you don't keep the 10 commandments by faith in Jesus
- 37:52Christ. I actually do as a matter of
- 37:55fact. The worship on the Sabbath,
- 37:56that's that's not what you think it is.
- 37:58The Bible actually says you should worship God in every day
- 38:01of the week. Do you do that?
- 38:03Well you know and so it's got some weird teaching doctrine
- 38:07that's been developed over the years that isn't in the Bible
- 38:11church. If he would just did I say this
- 38:13already if you would just know your Bible.
- 38:15Most of the false teaching you just dismiss like you're out of
- 38:18your mind. That's you aren't Michael the
- 38:20Archangel. You are not.
- 38:23You go, Ed. How can you be so mean to him?
- 38:24Wasn't mean to him telling somebody the truth and not to
- 38:27rip off the church. That's not mean.
- 38:30And maybe God will. Get to him and go stop this.
- 38:32All your energy and efforts could be used for something for
- 38:35the gospel and not your own thing.
- 38:38Here, Paul and Barnabas, they're causing great joy, which tells
- 38:41me that they handled the conflict properly, because when
- 38:44you handle conflicts properly in the church and with each other,
- 38:48there's joy as a result. These guys didn't bring.
- 38:51Joy. It's no joy to be told you're
- 38:53not saved. You're not saved.
- 38:55I know how you can get saved. I'm going to cut you.
- 38:59Literally lay down. It's time to cut you.
- 39:02It's going to be painful, but then you can be saved.
- 39:04After you heal, then you can just keep the law of the rest of
- 39:07your life and then maybe you'll be saved.
- 39:09That's not joy, that's bondage. But when you talk about the work
- 39:13of God, that's joy. And I think about think about
- 39:16you marry couples when you solve something wisely, aren't you
- 39:19happy afterwards? Like it's this is so good.
- 39:21I'm so sorry. I can't believe I was so wrong
- 39:24and no, I was wrong. No, I now you're arguing about
- 39:26who is more wrong. But there's great joy when you
- 39:31and I handle things properly. And that's where they are here.
- 39:36Verse four, it says. And when they come to Jerusalem,
- 39:39they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders,
- 39:43and they reported all the things that God had done with them.
- 39:46What else are they going to say? But some?
- 39:48Now there's another group that shows up, some of the sect of
- 39:52the Pharisees. And you guys that study with us,
- 39:55you know the Pharisees were the religious elite.
- 39:59They were ones. There were two big groups that
- 40:02were mentioned during the time of Jesus, the Pharisees and the
- 40:05Sadducees. The difference between the two
- 40:07is the Pharisees. This group of dedicated men
- 40:10studying the scriptures believed in miracles.
- 40:12So some when some Pharisees saw the resurrection of Christ, they
- 40:15became believers. That's what it says here.
- 40:18Notice it says some of the sect of Pharisees who believed they
- 40:22rose up and said it's necessary to circumcise them and command
- 40:27them to keep the Law of Moses. So you can see this doctrine is
- 40:31floating around and it's popular among a group of people and it's
- 40:35really popular in Jerusalem among the Jewish church.
- 40:40This is no. Side issue.
- 40:43This is what we would call in the church today, an essential
- 40:46of the faith. And what's the essential?
- 40:48How is a person saved? And there's two options.
- 40:52By works or by grace. That's it.
- 40:56There's only two options. You either save yourself or you
- 41:01surrender yourself to the one who saved you.
- 41:03Those are your only two options. And #1, the option number one,
- 41:07is impossible. You cannot save yourself.
- 41:11Only innocent blood shed for you can save you.
- 41:14You can't forgive yourself in the sense of your relationship
- 41:17with God. Only Jesus Christ.
- 41:19Remember the gospel? We we heard it during our
- 41:21Christmas services. For God so loved the world that
- 41:25he sent His only begotten Son. You and I were not his only
- 41:28begotten Son and so therefore only through Jesus can you be
- 41:33saved. This is a big issue and because
- 41:36Paul and Barnabas are going there, you're going to see in
- 41:40our next studies in acts, they have a council together and they
- 41:43start wrestling this out. They're received, it says in
- 41:46verse 4 by the church. They're spreading joy on their
- 41:49journey. And these Pharisees now I want
- 41:53you to see. I want you to understand
- 41:54something here. Before we head out, just.
- 41:58A couple more things and we head out.
- 42:00First of all, I want you to notice with the Pharisees,
- 42:03they're talking about what they already believe.
- 42:05It's necessary to circumcise them, and they command them to
- 42:08keep the Law of Moses. I believe they believed us.
- 42:11But I also want to point out something.
- 42:13They're new believers. The Pharisees are new believers.
- 42:17So they're talking like new believers because as new
- 42:20believers, there is a lot of baggage that you bring with you
- 42:23to the church. You don't know everything right
- 42:26away, and even the entirety of your whole life you're not going
- 42:30to know everything. So they bring in the baggage of
- 42:32their previous beliefs. So it makes sense that they
- 42:35believe this. It doesn't mean it's right.
- 42:38It just means it makes sense. And I would think of some of
- 42:41you, whether you're a new believer or maybe you came out
- 42:43of a cult or you came out of a real difficult church, you're
- 42:46gonna bring some of that baggage with you.
- 42:47It's gonna be hard to get rid of it, to take it and measure it by
- 42:52the word of God. It's going to be challenging.
- 42:54But it's not impossible. It's not impossible because
- 42:58there are people that God has given us that will help us
- 43:01understand the Bible, pastors and teachers.
- 43:03But you know, you don't even need a pastor or a teacher.
- 43:05You have the Holy Spirit and the Bible.
- 43:08The Holy Spirit can be your teacher.
- 43:10You can bring any question of the Bible, and the Spirit of God
- 43:12will help you. Now don't misunderstand that
- 43:14that doesn't mean that we don't need pastors or teachers.
- 43:16We do. They're God's gift to us.
- 43:18But you don't have to rely. God is not calling you out of a
- 43:21cold so you can follow another man.
- 43:24You're supposed to follow the Lord.
- 43:26You're not called out of one group, so you can follow another
- 43:28group and you can follow another group.
- 43:30You know, you and I, we need to learn to follow Jesus Christ.
- 43:35And then when you're in a church family, there's a like
- 43:37mindedness. That even though there might.
- 43:40Be disagreements. There's a like mindedness and
- 43:42there's an absolute belief in the essentials, and that's why
- 43:48we can dismiss other groups by their teachings.
- 43:50You know, false teachings exist and we've got to call out false
- 43:53teaching. The way that we've approached
- 43:55this here is we don't have a service every week about false
- 43:59teaching. You know what?
- 44:00You get the truth. You get the truth every week.
- 44:03And when you get a steady dose of the truth, any false thing
- 44:06that comes along, you're just like, oh, it doesn't sound
- 44:09right. That doesn't sound like Jesus.
- 44:11You know, I was just reading my devotions this morning.
- 44:12What you're saying right now is wrong.
- 44:14I even got a text last week. I got a text from a friend.
- 44:18He reached out to me and says, hey, I'm talking to some guy and
- 44:20he's telling me that hell doesn't exist.
- 44:22Is there anywhere? He says there's no verse in the
- 44:24whole Old Testament or New Testament that says hell is
- 44:27eternal. Can you share me it with?
- 44:30Can you tell me a verse? I'm like yes.
- 44:35It's all over the. Bible it's everywhere.
- 44:39But on questions like that, the place to go to is always go to
- 44:43Jesus. What did Jesus teach?
- 44:46Because if you believe something that you believe that something
- 44:50doesn't exist or is different than what Jesus taught and you
- 44:53got a big problem, How can you follow Jesus and at the same
- 44:56time be Jesus's master? Sorry Jesus, you got this one
- 45:00wrong. Because I've read the Bible like
- 45:02Jesus goes. I wrote the Bible bro, like what
- 45:05are you talking about? And so I just sent the brother a
- 45:08test. I said here I'll give you one
- 45:09verse, there are many more, but I'll give you He wants one, I'll
- 45:12give you one and here it is. You got to know the scriptures.
- 45:17So the Pharisees, you might be a new believer today.
- 45:20Or maybe you come out of a church and it's been hard for
- 45:22you. You're going to carry stuff with
- 45:24you. Don't be too hard on yourself.
- 45:27It takes time to learn, and you will.
- 45:30You will learn. Week by week, month by month,
- 45:33year by year, you will learn. And I believe these Pharisees
- 45:37will come to the conclusion of the early church, even
- 45:40themselves. So with our Bible study, let me
- 45:44give you a pop quiz. Are you saved by?
- 45:47Grace or by work? Say it Allah.
- 45:50Can you prove it? Well, I haven't given you the
- 45:52scriptures yet. Go over to Ephesians chapter 2
- 45:54and let me help you. I just sound like a guy.
- 45:58That showed up at your doorstep. I've got a false teaching for
- 46:01you. You're saved by works and your
- 46:03immediate response is Nah bro. Nope.
- 46:07And then I say prove it to me. Then you go to Ephesians chapter
- 46:102 and they'll be equipped on this one question.
- 46:14Or you say you know somebody comes to your door.
- 46:16I've got a new doctrine. I want to circumcise you.
- 46:19Nah bro. Get out of my neighborhood and
- 46:21you get on next door and put on. Hey there's a dude that wants
- 46:25like no. You just answer them right here.
- 46:27Ready. Ephesians Chapter 2, Verse 8.
- 46:31And by the way, circumcision is the physical cutting of the
- 46:34private parts as a sign unto the Lord.
- 46:37It was given by God. It was part of the old Covenant.
- 46:40It it, it was real and valid. But it's not so relatable to us
- 46:44today. It doesn't happen today
- 46:46religiously and especially in the in the in the church.
- 46:50But here's how you might hear it.
- 46:52You might hear it like this. Hey, you can't be saved unless
- 46:55you're water baptized. And like, what?
- 46:58Water baptism saves me. Yes.
- 47:00And some churches even say you can't be water baptized unless
- 47:03it's in our water and our ministers.
- 47:08It's the only way you can be saved.
- 47:10You can't be saved. You can't be baptized in the
- 47:11reservoir. Nope.
- 47:12Dirty water. And you can't be baptized in the
- 47:15ocean. Nope.
- 47:16Like it's it's almost comical, but many, many people get
- 47:22tripped up by this stuff. And so you're not.
- 47:25Saved by works. If you're an unbeliever, like we
- 47:28have our baptisms here with Aurora.
- 47:30Water from the reservoir actually comes right in here.
- 47:33It's cleaned up by the time it gets into our sanctuary.
- 47:35If you're an unbeliever and you get into the water with and into
- 47:38the water and get out of the water as an unbeliever, the only
- 47:41thing that happened is you got wet.
- 47:43The water did not save you. Water never saved anybody in the
- 47:46Bible, only the blood of Jesus Christ, because you're not saved
- 47:50by works. Listen.
- 47:52Verse eight, Chapter 2. For by grace you've been saved
- 47:56through, say with me, faith, not of yourselves.
- 47:59It's the gift of God. And now say this with me, not of
- 48:04works. Lest anyone should boast, we're
- 48:06his workmanship created in Christ Jesus 4.
- 48:09Good works. Not by good works, but four good
- 48:12works which God prepared beforehand.
- 48:14So you're saved by faith, not by works.
- 48:17Turn over to Titus. Now back toward the end of your
- 48:19Bible. I'll give you one more Titus,
- 48:21Chapter 3. This is a.
- 48:24Principle throughout the scriptures.
- 48:27But Titus chapter 3, you know one of the most popular
- 48:31religions around is Roman Catholicism, And Roman
- 48:34Catholicism is a system based on works from birth to death.
- 48:40And if you don't finish all the works properly, then you don't
- 48:43really even know if you're saved.
- 48:45That is not the Bible. A simple reading of the Bible.
- 48:48I don't know why, once you see what the Bible says, that you
- 48:51would still hold on to a workspace.
- 48:53Religion. God wants to free you from that.
- 48:56That you don't need a cower, or the fear of a system, or that
- 48:59you did things right. Or that may be purgatory.
- 49:02Maybe you get a second chance in purgatory.
- 49:05You don't know. You don't there.
- 49:06First of all, there's no such thing as purgatory.
- 49:08It was invented by man. There's no such thing, and there
- 49:12are no second chances. You're either saved by grace,
- 49:14now or never. That's it.
- 49:18There's no other option. It doesn't matter how many good
- 49:20works you do, no matter what kind of good person you might
- 49:22be. Doesn't matter.
- 49:24Only by the blood of Jesus Christ, which requires humility
- 49:28and surrender. And so I ask you to open the
- 49:30Titus. And so I will get there with
- 49:34you. Titus, chapter 3 and verse 4.
- 49:38It says. But when the kindness and the
- 49:40love of God our Savior toward man appeared not by, what does
- 49:45your say? Works of righteousness.
- 49:49Works of righteousness. What is a work of righteousness?
- 49:53Water baptism. It is a work of righteousness.
- 49:57A believer steps into the waters of obedience.
- 50:01It's a work. You are doing it for the Lord,
- 50:03but you're not saved by it. A work of righteousness, giving
- 50:07you your tithes and offerings. A work of righteousness, being
- 50:10kind, helping people. Those are all works of
- 50:12righteousness. You've been changed.
- 50:14Now you've got a different life, but you're not saved by these.
- 50:19They come because you are saved. It's not by anything we've done.
- 50:24But at verse five, according to his mercy, he saved us through
- 50:27the washing and regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.
- 50:31So now you know, and this will get into the depth of what
- 50:34happened in the early church. But you know, you just thank God
- 50:37for the early church council because we don't have
- 50:40circumcision services now. Because they.
- 50:44Settled it, they settled. And for that I say thank God
- 50:49that Jesus, that God put leaders in the church to make the hard
- 50:51decisions so that they would retain the teachings of Jesus
- 50:55and the freedom that he gives by faith.
- 50:57That's what we're seeing in Acts 15.
- 50:58So, Father, thank you for your word and the reality of of this
- 51:03section of Scripture. Thank you for.
- 51:06These men throughout the years, not just in the early church,
- 51:10but believers throughout the years, that would stand strong,
- 51:13I think of all of Protestantism for one Lord that would stand in
- 51:17the gap and say, no, this is not what the Bible teaches.
- 51:23And Lord, we know we don't hit it right all the time and we
- 51:26know that even in this church we aren't.
- 51:28We don't hit it right on every single minor doctrine, but our
- 51:34heart's desire is to know you and to be as close to right as
- 51:39possible. And if we're wrong, to admit it
- 51:43and to humble ourselves before you and to move forward in
- 51:46humility. So bless your church today as we
- 51:49head out in Jesus name. Amen.
- 51:52We pray that you've. Been encouraged by this Bible
