- 0:22Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast, to the
- 0:25perhaps more familiar, more familiar sound of my voice,
- 0:30Ryan. And I'm joined as always by the
- 0:33other two fellas, Dean and Owen. So, Dean, how are you doing
- 0:37Sunday evening? Goodbye night fare and well
- 0:41excited to to chat to you guys. Yeah.
- 0:45How are you? What's been going on with the
- 0:47weather the past couple of days? Because I mean, conscious not to
- 0:50complain about the 25 and 26° days, but there's noticeably
- 0:55cooler than it may have been next week even.
- 0:59Yeah, I think there's been a lot of comments just generally about
- 1:02it being pretty mild. Guys, get a grip.
- 1:07Oh my God. I haven't introduced you yet,
- 1:13but yeah, that hasn't got hot yet, I think.
- 1:15I think there might be some warm days ahead, is what I'm saying.
- 1:18Like, summer's going to hit like, just like the Irish summer
- 1:23element, you know, piping hot. It's funny, last week when I was
- 1:281, the evenings I was in Melbourne was in this bar and
- 1:31maybe it had been 23° in the day.
- 1:33So obviously not like hot. And then the evening like
- 1:37temperatures kind of drop quickly once the sun goes away
- 1:40anyway, don't they? So I had, I had a hoodie on and
- 1:42there's this Victorian lad there and he was asking where I was
- 1:45from. I was explaining an 11 path and
- 1:48then he started taking the piss out and me like, oh, you soft WA
- 1:52blokes, like don't be pretending like you're cold.
- 1:54Get that hoodie off. You don't really need that
- 1:56hoodie. It's different over there.
- 1:58It's like Four Seasons in a day in Melbourne.
- 2:01We're not used to it. So that's right.
- 2:02It has been uncharacteristically cool.
- 2:06It's like got down to 20°, might even be 19 at the minute
- 2:10freezing on. On them blood thinners over
- 2:14here. But yeah Owen, how you doing?
- 2:16How you surviving mid January? Yeah, heating on wrapped in a
- 2:20blanket, finished my long run and warm cup of tea beside me
- 2:24trying to keep me warm. Nah, look, I can't complain,
- 2:28it's not the worst. This morning I woke up, it was
- 2:30like 4° feels like 1. So at least we're not in the in
- 2:33the minuses anymore. But like the mornings are
- 2:36getting a slight bit brighter. So it won't be too long until I
- 2:41won't have to wear the head torch in the mornings in the
- 2:43evenings. Will you have a nice English
- 2:47Sunday roast on the menu later on?
- 2:50No, that's fine. That's not really.
- 2:52I don't really go for one of them most Sundays now.
- 2:58What's on my menu? I hardly literally just have
- 3:00like a Turkey steak, some egg, some leaves.
- 3:06I'm trying to cut some weight still, so now I have to still be
- 3:10good. The Armour diet is in full
- 3:12swing. Yeah, 4 weeks till go time.
- 3:17It's good, but I look forward to hearing about your training
- 3:19because Dean, I'll tease you and the and the listeners at the
- 3:22same time, because offline before you joined, he was, he
- 3:25was just telling me about one of his killer sessions during the
- 3:29week. So you'll, you'll enjoy
- 3:31listening to that as we get into the show.
- 3:33Off the back of the race, he's tightening, tightening the
- 3:37screws. Don't run too much of A calorie
- 3:39deficit. We you know.
- 3:41When I say I was wrote off Saturday night, I was so wrote
- 3:45off, Oh my God. Yeah.
- 3:51Yeah, we'll get into it later. All right, good.
- 3:54Well, on that, how how has the week been recovering from
- 3:59Valencia and stuff and how does the the result sit with you now
- 4:02a week later? Yeah, so my quads were like mush
- 4:08until like Wednesday. They sort of came back around.
- 4:11But like the result, like, yeah, it's other than like super happy
- 4:15to say I'm a 29 minute 10K guy. Like obviously after the race,
- 4:22like you see, you came under and 89th and you see like you're so
- 4:25far, like I was only a 9th Irish.
- 4:27So there's still like they're still, so I'm still so not far
- 4:33off. But in my running journey it was
- 4:36a big step. So literally just needed a stage
- 4:42free. That's the thing.
- 4:44Like there's so many more elements I can add to my
- 4:45training. There's so much more, like room
- 4:49for improvement. I just need to keep stuck in the
- 4:51weeks and like, I feel like I can improve more.
- 4:56So yeah, no, I'm really, really happy.
- 4:59And that's why I'm so excited for ARM as well now.
- 5:03Yeah. And you're having fun with it?
- 5:05Yeah, enjoying the week to week. Yeah, loving it.
- 5:08I've sort of settled back in a sort of nice routine, like
- 5:10working the 9:00 to 5:00 and like training around.
- 5:15So yeah, I sort of have a nice balance at the moment.
- 5:18Like that's another thing you have to take into account.
- 5:20Like a lot of them boys that would have beat me, like they're
- 5:23all like full time athletes, like they're not working a nine
- 5:25to five job. So yeah, no, it's good.
- 5:28It's good. Did you see side tangent into
- 5:32YouTube Diaries somewhat. Team Macau done a video about
- 5:36like a Valencia wrap up because there's a couple of them there.
- 5:39And Scott BC was talking after the race.
- 5:42He ran like was it 27404142? Like just a couple of seconds
- 5:47behind Joe Wigfield with the equal British record.
- 5:51And we've seen that Scott BC is been in like good form at the
- 5:56European cross country and stuff, but I wouldn't have known
- 6:00he was in good, good enough form to be he.
- 6:03After the race, he was basically saying, Oh yeah, it was all
- 6:05right, but I'm a little bit disappointed, really.
- 6:08So that says to me he had plans to run that British record and
- 6:14he considers it a bad day because someone else beat him to
- 6:16the line basically. Yeah, I think he was third
- 6:19Brett, I think Wickfield, I think Man Talk might have beaten
- 6:23him as well. But apparently, apparently he
- 6:25was pretty sick. He was, he was wrote off as well
- 6:28leading up to the race so he was just happy to run and he
- 6:32probably held himself but held himself back in the 1st 5K just
- 6:36to see who he was and kicked home.
- 6:37But yes, still like to call that a bad race.
- 6:42He's in good form and I think he'll be running an indoor 5K
- 6:45now pretty soon in America, so it'll be cool to see how he gets
- 6:48on. Yeah, that's what he's saying.
- 6:50He should in hindsight, perhaps gone with he was referring to
- 6:54Ephraim. Good days group.
- 6:55Must have been the group just a little bit ahead of them.
- 6:59And right then how this episode looks.
- 7:01We've got down marathon results. We've got a couple of results
- 7:05starting to come through from the indoor season over in the
- 7:08US. And then we're going to look
- 7:10ahead at some of the races to come next week in the in the
- 7:14indoors because there's races dropping thick and fast and the
- 7:18fields are absolutely star-studded like these guys are
- 7:22getting after it early on in the season.
- 7:24So next week and beyond is going to be unbelievable because I
- 7:29can't believe they've they've put these fields together like
- 7:31so early on in the season. It's very exciting from a fan's
- 7:35point of view. So I wouldn't you want to talk
- 7:38about Doha? Yeah, so this man sort of popped
- 7:42up, that popped up out of nowhere.
- 7:43I think I've seen on Thursday night something about like
- 7:48Tamara Tola. So he won the Olympics in Paris.
- 7:51He was running a marathon in Doha and immediately think it's
- 7:55a cash grab. And the pro there was like
- 8:00€250,000, which is like 400 odd thousand AUD prize money across
- 8:05like all the races. So yeah.
- 8:09And like, Doha wouldn't be renowned for being like a fast
- 8:12race. You presume it's going to be hot
- 8:14and humid, but Tamara Tola ended up winning in 20540.
- 8:19Second was Asafa Boki from Ethiopia in 20555 and third was
- 8:26Boki Durba in a two O 626. I'm on the women's side.
- 8:32Tis Tis gets a Gezig Hanggen from Ethiopia ran 22114, Tisket
- 8:42Germa from Ethiopia around 22233, and Mahuva Tisca from
- 8:50Ethiopia around 2/23/21. So yeah, I've absolutely
- 8:54butchered them names. It looks like an Ethiopian time
- 8:57trial. They're all Ethiopians and but
- 8:59yeah, super fast times as well. So yeah, I don't know what to
- 9:05make for us. You Ryan's done well to allow
- 9:10you to. Shop.
- 9:12That one. But yeah, super fast times for
- 9:16like a January marathon, I don't know.
- 9:18And like, they're definitely well looked after.
- 9:20I think, I think this one typically gets a pretty big
- 9:24Ethiopian contingent, like it's often dominated by Ethiopians as
- 9:28opposed to like traditionally where a lot of them are
- 9:30dominated by Kenyans. But I had a look at the the
- 9:33weather and it seems pretty moderate, which like you say,
- 9:37normally for Doha, you associate it with, you know, desert super
- 9:41hot. Whereas I think today it's like
- 9:43a top of 21, low overnight, low of 11.
- 9:45So not too bad. Which probably explains why
- 9:49there's a few guys running 205. Just on that with half the well,
- 9:54not half the field, all of the podium men and women being
- 9:57Ethiopia like you said. And then on on the results
- 9:59there, we can even see down to 5th and even down to 5th,
- 10:03there's only one non Ethiopian there.
- 10:05Remember last week talking about, well, Cross and Houston
- 10:10half and the marathon results and Ethiopia was absolutely
- 10:14everywhere? So what the hell is going on in
- 10:17this Ethiopian distance scene? Little bit of depth.
- 10:21Just a little bit of depth, not much testing and that's what you
- 10:25get. They're all coming out of the
- 10:28woodwork. Bit of a mad one with Tol as
- 10:31well. Obviously you said he was the he
- 10:35is the reigning Olympic champion from Paris.
- 10:38I was looking before what he's done since then.
- 10:40So later on that year in 2024, he ran New York, finished fourth
- 10:46in two O 8. Last year, his only race was
- 10:51London where he finished fifth in OK.
- 10:54He's ran pretty fast, two O 442, but still finished fifth Olympic
- 10:59champ, perhaps not the greatest result.
- 11:01And then twenty. Well, obviously 2026 the only
- 11:05race he's done is that one. But yeah, he's only he only
- 11:08raced 11 race last year, but he started this year off pretty
- 11:14strongly winning there in two O 5.
- 11:17To be fair, I always find it difficult to kind of follow the
- 11:22a lot of the women's names from Ethiopia and stuff because they
- 11:27know some reason I can just like told her, for example, I have an
- 11:31understanding and some background on him.
- 11:33But then the rest of those guys on the podium and stuff, yeah,
- 11:37there's just there's so many, it's hard to follow.
- 11:40There's just so many and they're all like super fast.
- 11:44Like every week there's a new one just popping up, which,
- 11:49yeah, it's a crazy depth. As we have, it's almost like if
- 11:52you're not as a male running like 201 or 202 or a female
- 11:58running like sub 250 and then you kind of just blend in, which
- 12:02is obscene to say. Which is like, you can, I can't
- 12:09justify this, but like, can you sort of understand why they, a
- 12:13lot of them like take drugs, like to try and like get an edge
- 12:19on the others. I don't know, like it's, it's
- 12:21wrong, But there's, there's so many good runners over there.
- 12:26Well, especially when they see probably like the lad who they
- 12:29went to school with or the girl who they sat next to and maths
- 12:32building a village because they've just won bloody Chicago
- 12:35Marathon or something. Yeah, like that's money.
- 12:38That chapter got popped and last week was an Albert career or
- 12:43something like that. Like.
- 12:45Him, he has one or he's got on like top finishes in all these
- 12:51major marathons. It is totally irrelevant.
- 12:54Team getting popped now like he has.
- 12:56He's made for a life, so he could not care less.
- 13:01Like he's like, all right, finally he's got me.
- 13:05The damage is done. I can literally retire now.
- 13:09Yeah, so it's sad to see, but yeah, there's like, I don't
- 13:18know, it's just super strange everyone getting popped in Kenya
- 13:20and no one getting popped in Ethiopia and then you hear about
- 13:24your one, the 1500 meter one. Well, Taji and the way she got
- 13:29popped, like Ethiopia, we're going to stand there.
- 13:32But while they were like, wait a minute.
- 13:35So yeah, I don't know. It's just something's not right
- 13:38over there. Yeah, you would be surprised if
- 13:412026 like kind of carried on this way and Ethiopia's name
- 13:47stayed relatively clean. Yeah, but that was the only,
- 13:50like, notable road race over the last week.
- 13:54Yeah, and then to kick off the the indoors, Cam Myers seems
- 13:59like bit of a random race really.
- 14:01University of Washington, he ran from the front by himself, won
- 14:07by was it 5 seconds? I think it's a run 349.81, which
- 14:14I was looking at kind of like the all time list for the
- 14:16Aussies. And he's actually got the the
- 14:19joint record with Ollie Hall 347.48.
- 14:24So it wasn't quite APB. But if you ignore, if you ignore
- 14:29Cam's time already and then this was APB forum that would still
- 14:33slot in our number seven all time for the Australians.
- 14:38So obviously still insanely fast mile to win by 5 seconds as well
- 14:43is like even more crazy. But yeah, what's what's he doing
- 14:49over there racing? Like he was in the world cross
- 14:53country team. He he won the trials.
- 14:56He chose to do the mixed relay off his own back.
- 14:59So you like he had to all his own way.
- 15:03And then obviously, like towards the start of the race, it was
- 15:07announced that Jack Anthony had been running in his replacement
- 15:09maybe on two weeks notice. So yeah, perhaps a bit of a
- 15:13shock to see him racing so soon after that, but obviously
- 15:17something going on we're not aware of.
- 15:19What would you hypothesize? Did did Crokes say and then was
- 15:24did they say it was an illness or something like that or did
- 15:28anything ever come out? I think there was a comment and
- 15:32indirect comment which kind of suggested it was like, but
- 15:37there's something going on or there's been things going on or
- 15:40something which made you think obviously there's there's
- 15:44something going on, but didn't exactly say what.
- 15:46Because obviously he had that bit of a medical episode, didn't
- 15:49he? When, when would that have been?
- 15:50Towards the back end of last European summer season where he
- 15:55like passed out or collapsed on it on a run.
- 15:59Health related but. But what could change in a week?
- 16:04Like like he's obviously clearly super fit, like a 349 in
- 16:08January. Is is serious going and like
- 16:12from the front as well. Yeah, I don't.
- 16:16I wish they'd just say it like just.
- 16:18It's weird that they didn't say anything like as a reason.
- 16:21Yeah, you would. One suggestion could be like it
- 16:26was a career choice, as in looking long term and into the
- 16:29future. Maybe he'll get more from
- 16:32focusing on the indoor season and getting sometimes on the
- 16:35board and potentially helping his profile and win more prize
- 16:38money than going to, well, cross country would.
- 16:41But. Just say that.
- 16:42Why would you nominate? Yeah.
- 16:44Just say that or come out clean. Like I disrespect that.
- 16:47The fact that like he didn't say anything unless it's something
- 16:52super private where fair enough, like 19 year old kid, like it's
- 16:56up to him. But yeah, it's just weird.
- 16:58Yeah, you hope it's that. You hope it's a private just a
- 17:01personal reason and that's why they chose not to disclose it,
- 17:04but doesn't make a lot of sense. Yeah, it's crazy how he is still
- 17:08only 19. Like he's just like one of the
- 17:12best in the world. Crazy girl.
- 17:15The standards that he's held against are crazy, unlike I am
- 17:20victim of that as well as in like potentially saying a run
- 17:23that is obscurely good isn't that good because of kind of
- 17:27like what he's done at age 14151617.
- 17:30You just expect him to stay on this Yahoo being a Britain
- 17:35trajectory. Yeah, and someone on that
- 17:38similar trajectory would be your man from across the pond, Sam
- 17:43route. He's flying.
- 17:45Hey. Yeah, he he ran in this pot
- 17:48classic in Hastings and 100m and he ran 145.86 where Sam Tanner
- 17:57breeding down his neck. But yeah, again, like what age
- 18:02is he 1617? Like to run a 145?
- 18:07Not a generation of talent. Which like is mind blowing but
- 18:13then it just makes that is it looked in house, locked in
- 18:18house. Yeah.
- 18:19Who's 16 and ran, what, 142? Yeah, but that was Olympic
- 18:24trials as well. Like this is in some lookout.
- 18:26Yeah, back ass New Zealand track.
- 18:28Fair, fair, fair. Yeah, all all fair.
- 18:30But like 1:45 not that long ago was an outstanding performance
- 18:37like national, national close to national record type performance
- 18:42that 142 is to feel just you know.
- 18:44Yeah, it's crazy. Like, you know, it's a different
- 18:46level, isn't it, between 1:42 and 1:45?
- 18:49So, but it just talks to how the game is changing.
- 18:53Like you're talking about with like rather than just the winner
- 18:57of a race running 2730 at Valencia, you've got a pack or
- 19:02sprinting, you know, like the the depth is.
- 19:06Yeah, it's really cool. Pretty deep.
- 19:11Connor, sorry, just before we move on completely, I was just
- 19:14looking on Cam Strawberry just then and scrolled back a little
- 19:19bit. And last Saturday, which would
- 19:22be the 10th of January, I think that is coincidentally exactly
- 19:26when well, cross country was or maybe well cross country was on
- 19:30the the Friday. But anyway, on the 10th or
- 19:32Saturday he Cam done a run. And in the caption, he put three
- 19:36weeks 3 races UW mile, which is this one he's just run this
- 19:41weekend in the 349 Boston 3K and Milrose Mile.
- 19:46So although the kind of prestigiousness of this race
- 19:50wasn't really there, if you exclude that and look at a
- 19:55Boston 3K when we're going to get to these fields as well and
- 19:59the Milrose Mile, they are like kind of two of the standout
- 20:03indoor meets. So I don't know it the fact that
- 20:07he he knows he was getting into those fields, but lead me to
- 20:10suggest it was just purely A strategic move.
- 20:13Then like, how much would 2K cross country take out?
- 20:16Yeah, especially with the team like Australia had.
- 20:19Like you could literally jog around that place and got a
- 20:22handy word medal. Like it's probably the easiest
- 20:24world medal he probably ever would have got.
- 20:26Yeah. And what, what are you in it
- 20:27for? I suppose it's probably the the
- 20:30questions you want to ask yourself.
- 20:32But like, because I understand the prize money wasn't very
- 20:36good. So you're not in that.
- 20:38Winning that gold medal didn't result in a lot of financial
- 20:40gain, but winning a world gold medal, you keep that forever no
- 20:46matter how fast you run. But you know, if you want to be
- 20:50competitive, you need to run faster and faster.
- 20:53Yeah, and what's the thing this year?
- 20:55Com games you'd think like no disrespect to anyone who's going
- 21:00to be going to the con games you you'd think even if he did do
- 21:03the world cross country, he would still be able to qualify
- 21:06for the con games team in later in January or in February.
- 21:11Like he probably does it in one shot basically, doesn't he?
- 21:15If next time he gets on the start line if he goes for the
- 21:18time, he probably gets it. Yeah, it'd be interesting to see
- 21:22how this ages with the likes of Olly Horror and Jack Anstee in
- 21:25terms of how their season goes on.
- 21:27And then people might look back and comment differently on on
- 21:32some of this. But yeah, over on our side of
- 21:37the world in Ireland, there was a few.
- 21:40There was an indoor event on Wednesday.
- 21:43And then Mark English, he's an 800m runner for Ireland.
- 21:47He was the national record holder before Kane Mcphillips
- 21:51ran in the world champs there in Tokyo.
- 21:55But he broke the Irish record, the 600 meter record.
- 21:58He ran 115.8, which again is him a solo run, serious going and
- 22:08like he he's a doctor by trade, but he's no spring chicken.
- 22:13Like he's he's 32 currently. And yeah, I noticed that.
- 22:21He was 32. That's funny because I knew that
- 22:27was coming, so I just googled his age whilst I was like
- 22:30speaking about him. I was expecting it to say like
- 22:3238 and I knew that that would maybe like rub steam up the
- 22:37wrong way. I wouldn't talk like he's like
- 22:40Cam. Are you the same birth year as
- 22:42Cam Mars? No.
- 22:47But then when you said he's there, he's no spring chicken,
- 22:50he's 32. I was like, shit, I'm almost
- 22:52getting offended now. But for the 800 meters.
- 22:55For two more weeks you won't. And then trust me, once you
- 22:59crossover, you realize all these 30 past year olds you know.
- 23:05But I'm just so I noticed in this race he wasn't wearing his
- 23:09ASICS kit so I'm presuming he's either left ASICS or he's been
- 23:14dropped by ASICS. But I'm just like his 2025.
- 23:19He ran a national record of 145 indoors.
- 23:24Then he came third in the European Indoor Championships.
- 23:27Then he won a race in 144. He got a national record of
- 23:32144.34. He then got bet that again and
- 23:35got a nodal national record of 143.92.
- 23:40These are all the 800 by the way.
- 23:42He won the Irish nationals in 148.
- 23:46He then came second in Budapest in a 143.37, another national
- 23:52record. He won a race in Beijing and
- 23:551:44 and then he got he got to the world semifinals in a 145,
- 24:04which like he got and then obviously Kimi Phillips sort of
- 24:11just knocked him off his feet and round 142.
- 24:15And but like for the year, he had to be unsponsored.
- 24:20Is is is pretty nuts. Like in the race in New Zealand,
- 24:27I noticed them. Sam Tanner, he wasn't wearing
- 24:30his Puma kit, so he must have gotten dropped as well.
- 24:34And like this week Zac Faggione, the Aussie distance runner came
- 24:40out that he lost his contract to a OAC on which like I understand
- 24:47there's no like a main event this year for brands, but I just
- 24:51feel like it's awful. It's harsh, Unlike the athletes,
- 24:55like especially like Mark English, like he had such a good
- 24:57year last year and for him to be like unsponsored at the moment,
- 25:02it's it's crazy. And like the likes of Acacione,
- 25:05like I think he got a two year contract would on and you can
- 25:09only like in that two years. Fair enough.
- 25:13The first year you're sort of building and building and
- 25:15building. If you get any injury at all,
- 25:17it's sort of like derails your progress.
- 25:20So like for a brand to only give you 2 years, like I feel like
- 25:23they should be giving you 4 years because at least four
- 25:26years, it's a long enough period to let's say if you do have an
- 25:30an injury or a little blip, you can still like regain fitness
- 25:33and like kick on. But I feel like they're not
- 25:38fully investing in like the athletes long term to like give
- 25:42them a chance. Like Zach of John, he had
- 25:44really, he was really unfortunate.
- 25:46He got a few injuries and then was it one of the cross country
- 25:49races he had? He collapsed something before
- 25:51it. Like I feel like just you can
- 25:53get really, really unlucky and like, it is a super cultural
- 25:57sport. But yeah, it's just it's not
- 26:00nice to see like loads of really good runners, like unsponsored.
- 26:04Yeah, I don't know what's making me think this way right now, but
- 26:08I mean, tell me I'm wider than Mark.
- 26:11But I think often we kind of sing from the athlete side and
- 26:16like, really fight for athlete like demands and rights and
- 26:21entitlements, prize money, sponsorships, whatever it may
- 26:23be. But also you do have to think of
- 26:26it from the brand's point of view, like the the game, if you
- 26:30would call it as such. Like just moves on so fast,
- 26:33doesn't it? Like if you're not performing
- 26:35and running PBS, yeah, unfortunately that might be
- 26:39because you've had an injury, but someone else is.
- 26:41And the brands want to have all those people signed.
- 26:45So if an opportunity comes up to maybe sign someone else who's
- 26:48like doing really well at that time, whilst you're potentially
- 26:52going to be taking six months to come back from an injury and it
- 26:55being unknown whether you'll get back to those levels, it's it's
- 26:59a tough world out there. And do you think some of these
- 27:02brands are looking at the athlete as a bit of a package
- 27:05deal, So in terms of what they're presence is broader
- 27:09presence in terms of social media and how like the following
- 27:14an influence I have? I think nowadays that does come
- 27:18into account, like they'd rather like drop Zac Faggione and hire
- 27:24some young Instagram influencer with 100 RK followers that is
- 27:29going to like have more reach. But like the size of these
- 27:35companies like Puma and Nike on like giving little Zac Fagioni a
- 27:41couple of pairs of shoes a year and some kit.
- 27:42Like that's nothing off their back.
- 27:45And I don't know, I just doesn't sit well with me.
- 27:48I feel like if you're buying into someone, you need to give
- 27:51them more than two years. I mean on the mark English one
- 27:54that does seem harsh like national record holder multiple
- 27:57multiple times. If if he can't get a deal over
- 28:00the line like how can anyone else from the 800 CNN Ireland
- 28:05like be optimistic of securing themselves a contract?
- 28:09And that's only spec like he was wearing a Brooke singlet.
- 28:12So I'm I don't know if he cut himself, he wanted more money
- 28:15and cut himself or Isaac dropped him.
- 28:18But yes, I think it's crazy that he wasn't wearing like a
- 28:24sponsored singlet. With I'm just jumping back and
- 28:28forth here between Zach Factioner and Mark English as
- 28:31well. But I know if you compare it to
- 28:33another sport like Zach Factioner, if you're talking
- 28:36about Premier League footballer, I don't know.
- 28:39Would you compare them to like think about people who maybe
- 28:43just signed their like first pro deal out of the Academy.
- 28:46The chances of you then ending up in like the Championship or
- 28:49League One within a couple of years is pretty high and like
- 28:54there's no guarantee that that short term deal in the 1st place
- 28:58will eventuate to anything crazy.
- 29:01Maybe it's just fallen victim to a bit of that, but I mean I do
- 29:05get what you're saying as well. Brands should throw more cash at
- 29:08it overall, make more athletes happy.
- 29:13Yeah. Or just give them a chance.
- 29:17Two years, like a little bit like an Olympic cycle, that's
- 29:20all. Like if they can't do over 4
- 29:21years, OK, that's OK. But 2 years is just, it is
- 29:25pretty short and like an athlete's like all you need is
- 29:29one injury and that knocks your total track season off.
- 29:32Like that's, yeah. Also as well, I'm just I'm just
- 29:36thinking out loud here general public was we have no idea what
- 29:41clauses go into these contracts. So like he could have just not
- 29:45hit clauses which he would have known ages ago he was never
- 29:49going to hit. But yeah, we we don't know kind
- 29:52of what goes into them, what doesn't go into them.
- 29:56I'd love to get like an archive of expired contracts or
- 30:00something and just see how they're kind of made or.
- 30:03Yeah, what they actually look like, because we have an iota of
- 30:06what any of them look like. Not even like rumour mill like
- 30:13performance bonuses or if you don't do this then you dropped
- 30:17or your salary goes down by X amounts.
- 30:20But you know, that's kind of all the things that will be written
- 30:23into them. Yeah, it's pretty cut throat
- 30:26though, as we see. And even like obviously some of
- 30:29the top athletes, there will be occasions where they have offers
- 30:33to switch brands and like some of the decision making and
- 30:37thought process that goes into like weighing up the vow, not
- 30:41necessarily the value, but like the the terms that are written
- 30:45into one contract versus another and why they choose one over
- 30:49another. I know lots of this is bound by
- 30:52like NDA's and stuff, but surely once the contracts have ceased
- 30:56and expired there's potential to talk about it?
- 31:00Your man Isaac Canelli, he I think he got silver in the 5K in
- 31:05worlds, but he was a Puma and as of January that contract was up
- 31:12and now he's a Hoga. So he was lucky to go from 1
- 31:15branch straight to another. But like you'd love to see the
- 31:18difference or if the contract is like the same or what's the
- 31:22story? Did you see him on that Team
- 31:25Macau video with some of the boys?
- 31:28Yeah, yeah, I seen him. He he was doing like a stride in
- 31:32front of my wave and I was like Isaac, hi.
- 31:38Didn't you say Vamos? No, no, that's only to Andres
- 31:43and my friend. Yeah, He was like, oh, I don't
- 31:45know what this shoe is called. I don't know.
- 31:49Yeah, he was asking them like, what are you racing or whatever?
- 31:51And he's like, yeah, yes. Oh, sorry, I've only just
- 31:53joined. I don't know what it's called
- 31:55because they're on about like the Cielo or whatever.
- 31:58I mean, they're like good couple of recruits and for Hoka Camelli
- 32:03have Tom like yeah, good signings.
- 32:07Good investments. Their little slogan is like
- 32:10something about fly, isn't it? Like.
- 32:12I think it's fly, human fly. Fly, human fly, yeah.
- 32:17That will be in those whatever shoes they put on.
- 32:20Imagine how how simple life must be if you're in Camelli shoes
- 32:24there and you're like, you're literally a pro runner, a
- 32:27medallist at the recent championships, you've signed
- 32:31with a new brand, and you don't even know what the Super shoe is
- 32:34called because you don't even care, clearly.
- 32:36Like, it's a good shoe. You're going to put it on
- 32:39regardless. You're being paid to put it on
- 32:41you just like, yeah, boys, what's this shoe again, by the
- 32:44way? I'm not.
- 32:46Getting caught up in the wades of it all.
- 32:48Yeah, that's like just trust in his ability.
- 32:50Like he doesn't really care what he's putting on his feet.
- 32:52He knows how good he is. Did he ran all right?
- 32:56I think only 2740 odd I think. Stinker.
- 33:00I mean actually it's in and I'm sure it's not the shoes but but
- 33:07that's a fake because was he second in the 10K?
- 33:14He was. Here on 27/29.
- 33:18Around 2729 he where did he finish then?
- 33:22Fourth or something? Eighth.
- 33:25Wow. Imagine 2729 coming 8th.
- 33:27Yeah, didn't didn't even get a shout out last week, but like,
- 33:32but that's the still. Was he second behind?
- 33:36Hand in the 5K behind Cole. Was he?
- 33:39Yeah, OK, so ahead of arm Green, but I suppose over the 5K and
- 33:45Arm Green's just absolutely spanked him over 10K put what,
- 33:5150, you know, 45 seconds into him.
- 33:54Have you seen there's someone like the interviews and stuff
- 33:57that have come out with him since that Valencia run last
- 34:01week? Like he's so switched on and
- 34:04like he explains stuff so well. Like there's AI think the Sunday
- 34:08podcast put up a video interview with him asking him about double
- 34:12threshold and stuff. And for anyone who has used
- 34:16double threshold or is looking to use double threshold to
- 34:19really interest in watch because he kind of explains the benefits
- 34:23of it, but also like when you should and when you shouldn't be
- 34:27using it. I you need to be like a really
- 34:29strong runner in order to be able to handle it and use it to
- 34:34then layer in the specific stuff on top of it's like kind of the
- 34:38strength building exercise. Your double threshold is like
- 34:41the base and then you do your your speed like to sort of like
- 34:45spring like sprinkling of speed on top to.
- 34:48But again, you need to be doing like stupid.
- 34:51I think there's so much more an athlete can do a long time,
- 34:54yeah. There's so much more an athlete
- 34:55can do before they get to that double threshold, like stage of
- 35:00their athlete career. Like there's so many more
- 35:02benefits to do before you get to that.
- 35:04He strikes me as the sort of guy that will know every shoe that
- 35:08he's putting on his feet. Absolutely, yeah.
- 35:12It's very light, thorough. Scientific everything's to do.
- 35:15Like millisecond I'd say. Miller Mole.
- 35:20Hey. Yeah, he'll know all his, like,
- 35:23treadmill efficiencies on every single shoe.
- 35:26Only the way he speaks. You, you think like when he
- 35:32retires, he's going to be a coach for sure.
- 35:34Like he's so passionate about the technical and scientific
- 35:38side of it. He wore the vapor flies for
- 35:42Valencia, which a lot of people would rather the alpha fly, but
- 35:47yeah, he's pretty good at running, eh?
- 35:50We shared between the three of us a video of him this week.
- 35:53And he's like, what are you going to do?
- 35:56This is obviously ahead of the the race.
- 35:58And they ask him what you're going to do if you break the
- 36:00record. And he, like, starts pretending
- 36:02to flick sheets of cash out. And then he's like, no.
- 36:06And they're joking. Now I'm going back to altitude
- 36:09and I'll eat another bowl of pasta.
- 36:11He says he's only joking, but it felt to me like he wasn't
- 36:16joking. Like basically I get a stack of
- 36:19cash if I it might per my contract if I break the record.
- 36:23That's how that's how it read to me.
- 36:26What did you say? Talking about clauses and
- 36:29contracts, he knows what his is, doesn't.
- 36:31Exactly, he knows what he's getting.
- 36:33He broke it by just enough too. It was about 8 seconds.
- 36:36Like he'll he'll chip off a little bit more next year.
- 36:40Those bloody sweets, they know what to do with these.
- 36:42Rafty bastards. Yeah.
- 36:45Yeah, No, I think he played that, played that very nicely.
- 36:49Although. Did you?
- 36:51I thought when they went through, we didn't speak about
- 36:52it last week. I thought when they went through
- 36:54halfway they said 1307. Did you?
- 36:58Yeah, wasn't it like almost looked as though from what he
- 37:01was saying that he was on for world record pace?
- 37:04It felt like that and then that K that that went forever.
- 37:08I mean, if he stopped in that first shoot, he would have, I
- 37:10think he was at 2615 or something.
- 37:12But yeah, it felt I, I don't know if he positive split
- 37:15because it certainly didn't look like the intensity came out of
- 37:18the race in the second-half. I think he was like literally
- 37:22perfect. His first half was the exact
- 37:25same as the second-half. So that they've probably just
- 37:28got that slightly wrong the the commentary rather than his
- 37:31official, but his official time is even.
- 37:34Yeah, which would make sense. That's how it looked.
- 37:37It looked like he was on that, you know, 240 odd pace the whole
- 37:40way, pressing the whole time. Yeah, I think the commentators
- 37:43just had a bit of a bit of a Boo Boo there with his split, and
- 37:47then Andres himself had had one in the last K when he thought
- 37:52he'd finished 200 meters before he did.
- 37:54That'll be so hard to get going after thinking you've just hit
- 37:58the line. From a lad who's there, it is
- 38:03demoralizing when you see people that are still running when they
- 38:07pass that first like Arch and they're still running from the
- 38:10like 150 meters. You're like no, because you're
- 38:15just you've after giving it all. Because was there a corner as
- 38:19well? And then maybe like a four or
- 38:21500 meter straight. Yeah, so corner.
- 38:24And then I think you've like 600 meters, but yeah, you can see
- 38:28one shoe, so you bomb it and then you see people still
- 38:32running when they're past the shoot and you're like, fuck, sit
- 38:37down for that 150 meters. You're literally just yeah,
- 38:40struggling. Well.
- 38:41I was. So even even if you're on the
- 38:44red line coming into that corner, I don't know what it is,
- 38:47but automatically once you turn a corner and can then see the
- 38:52finish, you can drop the hammer again, can't you?
- 38:54You can just like find something on the back of a corner.
- 38:57It's weird. And it helps when the street is
- 39:00lined like 3D of people just screaming at you as well.
- 39:04So he then would have dropped that hammer thinking he was
- 39:08dropping it for 300 meters, emptied the tank entirely to
- 39:12then have to find another hundred or two.
- 39:16Yeah, yeah. And fair enough.
- 39:18Like I had, I could see people still running like he was first.
- 39:21He would have not have known, which is, yeah, super super.
- 39:25Painful for him, but yeah, he'll be back up in altitude now
- 39:29eating a few more bowls of pasta, so life is good.
- 39:33Yeah, I think he's up there. There's a few of them going up
- 39:35there. Afim Antwerp seems to be doing a
- 39:37lot of running with him. And this the Norwegian guy as
- 39:41well. That Puma Norwegian guy.
- 39:44I did see Alfie was there is that Sierra Nevada?
- 39:47Yeah, super. High as well.
- 39:50Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's super high up there, which
- 39:53is did is off human a marathon. I think he's doing a marathon
- 39:57pretty soon, even though that might have changed now that he's
- 40:01got the European standards and the all that sort of stuff.
- 40:04But I think he was training for a marathon.
- 40:07I think Jordan Donnelly might coach him.
- 40:09You know, I know he seems to be attached to everyone, but he he
- 40:13reshares a lot of his posts and stuff.
- 40:16And like Candace, I don't know how you would suggest that
- 40:19you're someone's coach, but you know, through like
- 40:21congratulating him and stuff. I think he's like an advisor
- 40:25really. He just bounces ideas off them.
- 40:27But I think Alfie would be like a soft coached.
- 40:31But yeah, Donnelly helps out a little bit.
- 40:35That might be what he goes with the line of advisor coaching
- 40:39consultancy. Yeah, right.
- 40:42What's up next? We've got the fields ahead of
- 40:45the New Balance Grand Prix next week, 24th of January over there
- 40:50in these are in Boston, NY Grand Prix.
- 40:54New Balance is Boston, yeah. Boston So the men's 3000 meters
- 40:59is filled with three Irish athletes.
- 41:02In fact, Owens very good friends.
- 41:05Andrew Costgren, Brian Faye, Nick Griggs and then there's
- 41:10Australian Cam Myers and the rest is US athletes including
- 41:14Graham Blanks, Morgan Bieldscomb, Matt Wilkinson.
- 41:20So interest in Irish contingent heading over there anywhere on
- 41:24the ground on what the boys are up to there.
- 41:27No, I know Andrew was in Flagstaff, so he's done a lot of
- 41:30campus Flagstaff and we'll head to Boston.
- 41:33But out of all of them, I'm most excited about seeing as Marco
- 41:37Langan. He's the guy.
- 41:40He's an NCAA guy, but he pushed habitum right to the end, not 5K
- 41:46indoors. And then he gave that he gave a
- 41:49really funny interview after and what was he saying?
- 41:55He full on like believes he will win NCAA outdoor 5K and him, you
- 42:01know that Gary Martin guy, he's another young lad.
- 42:04The. Glasses.
- 42:05Yeah, he was saying like, oh, Gary wouldn't move his flat
- 42:10house or something like that. You have to go find it.
- 42:13It's so. Funny because it was a full
- 42:15Sprint, wasn't They're all thrown themselves over the line
- 42:18and he came over the top of him, didn't he, The Irish lad, These
- 42:22fucking hung shit hung poor Gary out to dry because, but Gary's
- 42:26just tying up like there's nothing of it.
- 42:28He did anything wrong? And then Mark was like, oh, I'm
- 42:32not even upset, but losing. He lost his earring as well.
- 42:35He's like, I'm more upset about losing what you he's he's a real
- 42:38character anyway, but super, super fast.
- 42:41But yeah, that's a stacked field.
- 42:43Do you hear the coffee Cup guys recap their world cross country
- 42:47experience? And they mentioned the race, the
- 42:50run of the day in the senior man's in terms of not at the
- 42:53pointy end, but you know, in terms of judging their effort.
- 42:56They mentioned Brian Fay. Well, yeah, judged it to
- 43:01perfection. Yeah.
- 43:03And I think Morgan McDonald was commenting on that, on someone
- 43:06who he, he saw it unfold. Yeah.
- 43:09And so I saw him judge it very well, which is interesting.
- 43:13And this is what I suppose Cam's doing in terms of having a first
- 43:16hit out running the 349 for the mile to set himself up for this
- 43:19race. And it's the same with Brian Fay
- 43:21in terms of he he learned a lot from EUR and it set him up for
- 43:25World Cross. But I still can't see anyone in
- 43:29that field sort of be in Andrew Costkran.
- 43:31I think 3K is Andrew Costkran's like best distance really
- 43:35because he's got salvage speed over the 15 and he's super
- 43:38strong from the 5 S. My money's on Andrew Costkran
- 43:41there, to be honest. And he he did he run well in one
- 43:47of those Grand Slam three KS as well.
- 43:50Yes, he came second to Grant Fisher only, I think, and fair
- 43:57enough that this will be more of a time trial.
- 44:00I'm guessing they'll be like wave lights and all that sort of
- 44:02stuff. But yeah, stack field.
- 44:05Do you reckon you've got a bit of a soft spot for Graham
- 44:07Blanks? You're going to allow Owen to
- 44:10give Koster and favouritism here?
- 44:12Well, Graham Blank turned a little bit.
- 44:16He was a little bit off, wasn't he?
- 44:17At World Cross? He wasn't doing anything super
- 44:21spectacular. I think his interview post race
- 44:23was better then. Well then he's run where he was
- 44:26like, that sucked. I hated it.
- 44:29I got smoked, which was awesome. So I think he yeah.
- 44:36So I'm excited for him. Hopefully he bounces back.
- 44:39On getting smoked and stuff at World Cross or people saying
- 44:43that they did, it's funny because in hindsight, like
- 44:47through that Macau video, Rory Leonard features in it and he
- 44:50talks about his results. So if you can remember, he
- 44:52finished 79th, which by his own admission isn't like a great
- 44:57result. And you look at the results when
- 45:00they come through and all you see is that he finished 79th and
- 45:03you're like, well, that's a bit of a bad run.
- 45:06You're kind of judging it like asking questions and stuff.
- 45:09And then when you hear his explanation of like, I mean, it
- 45:12was there wasn't really much in the way of explaining why it was
- 45:16a bad run, but he just basically said I was redlining from the
- 45:19start. I felt like I couldn't move past
- 45:22three 30s. And I was amazed that when I
- 45:27crossed the line, there was actually still people behind me.
- 45:31Like I thought based on how I was running, I must be dead
- 45:35last. And then when you hear like a
- 45:37kind of an honest and a humble reflection and critical
- 45:41reflection, it's a lot more relatable and you're like, well,
- 45:45you know what it feels like to have a shit run when you don't
- 45:48expect to have a shit run or you don't think you deserve to have
- 45:51one. So I can then kind of take my
- 45:54critical lenses out and be like, yeah, OK, fair play.
- 45:57Everyone can have a shit day. And like it can just happen as
- 46:02well. Like you can do everything, like
- 46:04perfectly up everything and it's on the day you just you just
- 46:09don't have it. It's just happens, which is a
- 46:12strange thing like with what our sport, but that's, yeah,
- 46:17sometimes just happens. You don't have on the day.
- 46:20It's funny as well though because when it's you you feel
- 46:22like oh shit like I'm I'm just like making excuses or trying to
- 46:27justify but it literally in the end it does happen to everyone
- 46:31at some point or other. Yeah.
- 46:34So it's like, because when you're training like he's like,
- 46:37again, just under that red line and like anything at all could
- 46:41just throw you over and lead to like a poor race or even like
- 46:46mentally as well. You have to be on the ball.
- 46:49So yet there's so many, so many little things go into it like
- 46:53running the perfect race. And if one of them's off, you
- 46:56can just derail. Yeah, back to New Balance.
- 47:00It's weird the way they've they've a 3K but they also have
- 47:03a 2K and in the 2K they've got the likes of like Grant Fisher,
- 47:08Sam Gillman, Luke Houser, Hobbs Kessler and Jake Whiteman.
- 47:13So they're probably the the big names there.
- 47:17And yeah, who was your put your money on?
- 47:21Jake White, my Grand Fisher or Hobbs Kessler, as a matter of
- 47:24fact. Exciting to see Whiteman back on
- 47:27the start lines like kind of semi regularly, at least,
- 47:31because the the World Athletics champs was almost like a it
- 47:36wasn't his comeback because he'd raced in the lead up to that.
- 47:39But now that he's kind of got through those championships and
- 47:42then he's on the start line again at the start of like the
- 47:44next season, you're like, OK, he's he's actually back now for
- 47:48the foreseeable as well. And yeah, going up against
- 47:53Graham Fisher is not an easy way to start it off. 2 Ki mean you
- 48:01would say that on the distance Whiteman.
- 48:04It potentially suits Whiteman a bit more, but we've seen Fisher
- 48:07do pathetic things over the 3000, so I'm sure he can still
- 48:12run a bizarre 2000. Pathetic things.
- 48:18By pathetic you mean very good, right?
- 48:20Pathetically good, yeah. Yeah.
- 48:23So here's your tip. How's everyone if everyone gets
- 48:26to pick one? I'm picking Whiteman.
- 48:29Chop's too good, especially like 2K is more like, I don't know,
- 48:33815 hundred. Yeah, my mind's and Jake
- 48:37Whiteman. I'll go Fisher.
- 48:39So Fish is obviously going to go to the front and see if he can
- 48:42burn him off, get rid of his kick, but I don't know if he if
- 48:462000 meters is long enough for him to.
- 48:49I reckon Whiteman can still be there and just run past him.
- 48:53My logic is fishes like peaks and troughs, often a lower,
- 48:58whereas Jack Wightman normally gets very fit at the right time.
- 49:02I'm not sure how fit will be in his first indoor race of the
- 49:05season. Didn't Fisher run a world record
- 49:09in indoors last last year as well?
- 49:11Yeah. Or the 5K.
- 49:14Yeah, I think he was fit to it. Well, he may have.
- 49:17He's fit so early in the year. And then Kessler's kind of like
- 49:21the wild card, right? Because he didn't end the season
- 49:23very great. He didn't make the US team.
- 49:26How's he going to come back? Yeah, yeah.
- 49:30And he's had a bit of a tough time of it.
- 49:33USA has been so competitive and it was, I think he was a bit
- 49:36bewildered, wasn't it? He passed comment that it wasn't
- 49:41like I had a bad year. I did.
- 49:42I did what I thought was helping me improve, yet I wasn't good
- 49:46enough to make the team, so it sounded like.
- 49:50So he either goes one or two ways.
- 49:52Maybe he gets a bit, you know, dejected or he uses it as fuel.
- 49:57So he could, hopefully he comes out and goes back.
- 50:00He's one of those characters that you'd root for as well
- 50:02though, isn't he? Yeah, 100%.
- 50:06And Hobbs Castor super young still like he's been on the
- 50:09scene for a while. Yeah, he had 32. 600 meters.
- 50:13Then again, we're talking about Owens Countryman.
- 50:15Kane Mcphillips toes the line with Donovan Brazier and Bryce
- 50:20Hochul of the USA and Mehdi Yaniri also of the USA.
- 50:27So is that the full field? Yeah, there's.
- 50:30More people, despite the fact there's only four that is.
- 50:35It's funny because maybe a year ago you'd be saying that as a
- 50:37random field. Like just to US guns, a random
- 50:42Irish kid and another US person you don't know well.
- 50:45But now after what Mcphillips done in the summer, you're like,
- 50:49shit, that's a sick field. And I feel like it's like
- 50:53they've asked for this to be like specifically put on for
- 50:57them to try and get like a standard or something like that.
- 51:00Cause yeah, 600 meters ain't run that often.
- 51:04And like, yeah, I don't know, it's just super specific, like
- 51:07Donovan Razor, Bryce Hop or Kimmy Phillips, like super fast
- 51:11guys. Well, didn't Josh how we run a
- 51:14600 meter US or world record? Were indoor world records, Yeah.
- 51:20Was it? I think in Rise at 112, that'd
- 51:25be right. That that was last month, that
- 51:28was in December. And I saw a, there's a YouTube
- 51:31clip off the back of that about it This that came out this week
- 51:36talking about how I think in a podcast he referenced he wants
- 51:39to target the indoor world record.
- 51:42That is it Kip Kata, Kenyan who ran for I think Denmark.
- 51:48It's like 30 years old. The 800 meter world record is
- 51:51like, I think it's 142.6 thereabouts, but maybe these
- 51:56guys are having a crack at that, the 600 meter world record.
- 52:00Yeah, like you say, with it being a random distance usually,
- 52:03like even the two KS and stuff, they're not.
- 52:07And the 1K is another one. They're not running these random
- 52:10distances unless there's someone in the field who is taking a
- 52:13stab at some sort of European country or world record is like
- 52:20the kind of set up deliberately for these records to fall,
- 52:24aren't they? So, yeah, watch the space on
- 52:27that one. I mean, who would you pick?
- 52:29Maybe Donovan Brazier giving his comeback And then like, he's
- 52:34still there again this year. He's clearly fancies himself on
- 52:37the upward trajectory. Yeah, my money's on him as well,
- 52:41but alter on super fast. The I'm just rating up a little
- 52:46bit on it and it looks like Joshua broke Donovan Brazier's
- 52:50600 meter world record. There you go.
- 52:54Mr. Brazier wasn't too happy. Perhaps not redemption.
- 53:00And that's funny, right? This time last year, maybe if
- 53:03how he had to broke his record, he wouldn't have really been
- 53:06able to do anything about it because he may he may have tried
- 53:09to get a field together, get himself into a race and
- 53:13organisers and other athletes would probably would have been
- 53:15like, no, what? Why?
- 53:18Why would I get behind you like you've kind of been, you've been
- 53:21finished for the past three or four years, mate.
- 53:24And then now he's fully back on the scene, he's calling the
- 53:27shots again. But like that's all how I don't
- 53:31understand like how did he hold his Nike contract?
- 53:35Like fair enough, he won worlds in 2019 but he literally only
- 53:40returned in 2025 which is like 6 years.
- 53:46Like I don't get head like to him.
- 53:48I don't know. Yeah.
- 53:50To be fair, yeah, some of those night contracts do seem to go on
- 53:53for a while when it's clearly passed the the athletes peak or
- 53:57whatever. So maybe they do have some long
- 54:01term what like Craig Angles? I think he's probably still a
- 54:03night athlete now. Speaking to him, he's running in
- 54:07Dublin like next week or really, really soon.
- 54:09So here he's doing like a European Tour.
- 54:12I'm. Like he's a legend, you need to
- 54:14go and meet him. In 100 meters in Dublin, yeah.
- 54:17Remember that guy was like one of the first kind of like people
- 54:20I started following when I was getting into running because
- 54:23he's just a bit of a Mad Dog, isn't He's wild.
- 54:25Yeah, just crazy shit. I think he was living in a van.
- 54:29They're like running across America or something.
- 54:32He was breaking like a 4 minute mile in every state or
- 54:35something. The way runners are like quite
- 54:38introverted and like nerdy and stuff.
- 54:41He's just not that guy. He's like this wild outgoing
- 54:44explorer and bloody wild bastard.
- 54:48His his Instagram bio is like your mom's favorite runner or
- 54:51something like that. So the women's 1500 meter field,
- 54:57we've taken our time with this preview but given in depth
- 55:00insights here. Who who stands out here?
- 55:04Sarah Billings of Australia And did you say Jess Hall earlier,
- 55:09Owen? She's in the 3K.
- 55:13She's in the 3K Sarah Calvis of Great Britain is also in the
- 55:171500 meters, as well as Sinclair Johnson, the homegrown athlete
- 55:22from the US, Isabel Buffy from Great Britain, and Gracie
- 55:26Morris, who's also just represented the US.
- 55:30Yeah, I presume, like all these New Balance athletes are like,
- 55:34made to come over for this one because, like, your one Naomi
- 55:37Tanaka, that woman races like everything.
- 55:40She's over. Sarah's a New Balance out late.
- 55:48But yeah, I don't know. I think Sarah is going to have a
- 55:51massive year this year, and she had a really big year last year.
- 55:54So building on to that, you'd love to see her do well.
- 55:57I'll I'll go Sinclair Johnson for the for the win then.
- 56:03She won that road mile in Hawaii, didn't she?
- 56:07Yeah, and by a bit of a straight cry.
- 56:11Yeah, she was she she beat the man as well, didn't she?
- 56:13That was the like kind of first across the line 1.
- 56:16Yeah, I don't think I'll be getting much from the bookies on
- 56:19that one. No, but you always go for the
- 56:21favorite. Didn't hurt you going for the
- 56:26writing. Silver medalist in the in the
- 56:31men's Rats, No. And the gold medalist isn't
- 56:35running real risk taker Ryan. Who have you got for the long
- 56:43odds? Who's the juicy option?
- 56:48Dorcas Awoi. Oh.
- 56:52Just go as long as Owen. As long as Owen and his drug
- 56:54testers aren't there. Jeez.
- 56:59You better have gone for the Ethiopian then.
- 57:05Oh dear. All right, 3K.
- 57:07Women's 3K and Jess Hall is toeing the line here as well as
- 57:12Alex Millard of Great Britain. Hannah not all of Great Britain,
- 57:15Ellie Saint Pierre of USA, so bit of a studded field, this
- 57:20one. Your money's undressed.
- 57:22Although I think Ellie Saint Pierre, she's come back from her
- 57:26second kid, isn't she? Is she?
- 57:28I know. Something.
- 57:29But yeah, just all just a class above the rest.
- 57:32I'll go Saint Pierre and upset. And Ryan, you're in trouble
- 57:35here. I'm pretty sure Turkey could be
- 57:42the most eclotic country in the in the start list, but didn't
- 57:47Ellie Saint Pierre? Did she beat Jess Hull World
- 57:52indoors last year? Oh yeah, she's good in the
- 57:54indoors I. Think that was last year, maybe
- 57:57it was the year before, but I feel like they've definitely
- 58:00raced off in a 3K before. Well, let's put a watch on the
- 58:04Australian women's 3000 metre record here because Georgia
- 58:08Griffith is the current record holder with 824.2 and Jess Hall
- 58:15has the second fastest time of 824.39 from both times from
- 58:202024. So I mean she's there about
- 58:23already and I dare say she is in shape to lower that.
- 58:27Yeah, that's fast, especially, I don't know, is it easier to run
- 58:30a 3K indoor? No, yeah.
- 58:32I think Georgia Bell, Georgia Griffith won that by a lot as
- 58:36well. She was out on her own, I think
- 58:39I remember. So hopefully.
- 58:41And Jess will have like Ellie Saint Pierre toner around or
- 58:44something like that. Yeah, that's all from New Bones.
- 58:49I'll just have a look what Ellie Saint Pierre has run previously.
- 58:53She's the reigning US record holder as well.
- 58:55She's run 820.87 so around 4 seconds quicker than Jess.
- 59:01Shocked didn't go for the favorite again.
- 59:04I think, I think let her away with it.
- 59:06She might have had a had a kid. I mean, if you're going to give
- 59:08me the options, pick in second, I'll take him.
- 59:13I'm just playing sweeper. And next, so that event is on
- 59:19the 24th. So a day later is did Doctor
- 59:23Sanders meet, which this is a mile, and the winner of the
- 59:30Doctor Sanders meet gets thrown in the what's the name of that
- 59:36one in America? The one Melrose.
- 59:40Melrose. Game.
- 59:41Yeah, yeah, yeah. The one Maker Mile, so the
- 59:45winner of this one gets put on that, but this one it feels
- 59:47pretty stacked as well. So you've got Cam Myers and he's
- 59:51a long week, busy weekend, and you've got Festus Liga from he
- 59:57runs with Under Armour, Adam Fogg, another Under Armour guy,
- 1:00:02Amon Camboy, Eric Holt, Adam Spencer, He's still in college,
- 1:00:07that kid. And Luke Houser, another big
- 1:00:12American name. But yeah, yet, Dean, I'm going
- 1:00:16to let you pick Cam Myers first here.
- 1:00:19Well, I'm going to go out in a limb and say maybe he doesn't
- 1:00:22race like what he's. Do you think he's going to race
- 1:00:25both? If he's got a start list, do you
- 1:00:28reckon he's maybe he ran the 3:49 to get a start in the
- 1:00:32Wanamaker Mile? Maybe.
- 1:00:34I think he was in that Wanamaker mile already to be honest.
- 1:00:36Yeah. So I if he's, I don't think he's
- 1:00:38going to be in because this is in two different states.
- 1:00:41I think Boston and is Doctor Sanders New York.
- 1:00:45And what did you call Ryan Perry?
- 1:00:48Strava post as to which race he'd be doing.
- 1:00:51Did he say Boston and Melrose? Yeah.
- 1:00:55So what does that mean he's doing?
- 1:00:57Not this. Yeah, he's doing the 3K more
- 1:00:59likely are you needs a scratch for this because this is like a
- 1:01:02tear down. And I thought that Adam Fogg
- 1:01:04maybe won this last year to get himself a star in the Wanna make
- 1:01:08a mile. Yeah, you'd love to see him win
- 1:01:11it again, wouldn't you? Or is this was this fairy water
- 1:01:15in the the new kit is that? White one, Yeah, I was told
- 1:01:21about that. He really liked that kit though.
- 1:01:23Mate he he peaked early in the in the ear didn't he with that
- 1:01:27kit in that run. This is the grey half tights.
- 1:01:33Yeah, borderline. See through.
- 1:01:36Is it that was it a mark We're talking about Under Armour
- 1:01:39shoes, like flying under the radar.
- 1:01:41That was a good marketing stump from Under Armour there.
- 1:01:44Yeah, yeah. And he was flying in that race.
- 1:01:51Took, pardon the pun, took some balls to wear them.
- 1:01:57Yeah. I think maybe that Eric Holt is
- 1:02:01like a bit of a dark horse in this.
- 1:02:03Another bit of a a Mad Dog. I can't remember.
- 1:02:06Was it the coffee Club Interviewed him a while ago.
- 1:02:09And his back story is like so interesting.
- 1:02:11He's kind of he was a nobody and then he just turned up on the
- 1:02:15scene and was like started smacking people up but didn't
- 1:02:18really understand running. And he's kind of like just went
- 1:02:22with it as it's gone. So yeah, he's he's an
- 1:02:25interesting character. Yeah.
- 1:02:27And the US trials, I think they talk about in that podcast, but
- 1:02:31he sort of, he was building a bit of momentum ahead of those
- 1:02:34trials, getting fitter and fitter and then was mixing it
- 1:02:39with guys that are completely decked out and heap a good kit.
- 1:02:42And he was, yeah, unattached. And I think it was a mixture of
- 1:02:48both his performance but also his persona that he ended up
- 1:02:51landing a deal which was really cool off the back of some good
- 1:02:54performances at the US Olympic trials.
- 1:02:58I'm pretty sure he's unattached again.
- 1:02:59I don't think he's with PM anymore.
- 1:03:01I think that's what he said. Enough Coffee Club podcast,
- 1:03:05yeah. But yeah, I think that's all.
- 1:03:07The Indoors are coming up next week.
- 1:03:09Pardon the pun, but my tip will be Adam Fogg.
- 1:03:12Oh yeah. Or like, yeah, like Adam Spencer
- 1:03:16always does well in these races. Feel like you can see Adam Fogg
- 1:03:20coming through the pack here, or Adam Spencer.
- 1:03:23Who's who Are you going to go? You're going to go there.
- 1:03:26Oh, I'm going friend and fog. Fog Dog.
- 1:03:29Yeah, fog dog Woof. We have to be team fog dog,
- 1:03:32don't we? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:35Back our boy training weeks then we are, only you're in a bit of
- 1:03:42a rush. I know I'm just going to enter.
- 1:03:46Basically I've got a race. I have to enter a 2 so you guys
- 1:03:49can talk about your training weeks and I'll just enter this
- 1:03:51race because it's sold out in 15 minutes last year so.
- 1:03:54No way. Yeah.
- 1:03:55I need to be on the ball. It's a 3K, it's the Belfast
- 1:03:59Classic. So yeah, I'm really on my phone
- 1:04:03refreshing and on the web browser refreshing to try and
- 1:04:06get into this. So basically he's tuning into
- 1:04:10our wakes as per normal. I'm super interested.
- 1:04:16Literally, you're doing running. It used to be a hamstring in the
- 1:04:19air. It just.
- 1:04:22Going. Across the screen.
- 1:04:24That's right. Where are those hard boiled
- 1:04:26eggs? Too early.
- 1:04:28Well, actually it's 2:00 here now, so I'm nearly due a bit of
- 1:04:32lunch. Brian, did you want to go
- 1:04:34through your wake or you want us to?
- 1:04:37I can go quickly and then you can give us a full training week
- 1:04:41because I've had a sneaky peek at your Strava.
- 1:04:45Yes, obviously I was away so kind of running took priority.
- 1:04:50Didn't have access to a bike. So the kind of the cross train,
- 1:04:53cross training has gone on the back burners a little bit.
- 1:04:56This week or the week prior I was able to through the gym,
- 1:04:59gyms in the hotels. But this week there's just been,
- 1:05:03I think I'd done four runs in the end, one of them had 10
- 1:05:08minutes of like steady in it. It's annoying because my heart
- 1:05:12rate monitor, right. I took it off to wash the strap
- 1:05:15in the shower and then it was on the washing line outside drying
- 1:05:19out. And then I went to pack my bag
- 1:05:21to leave and the the strap had miraculously disappeared off the
- 1:05:26washing line when Becky brought the washing in, but she claims
- 1:05:31that she she hadn't sighted it. So there's, there's a few
- 1:05:35unconfirmed stories going on, but I wasn't able to therefore
- 1:05:38take my heart rate monitor away with me.
- 1:05:40So any cross training that I was doing, I wasn't able to actually
- 1:05:45understand what sort of volume I was doing.
- 1:05:47But anyway, I'd done four runs each of 35 minutes.
- 1:05:51One of them had like 10 minutes of steady efforts in it, which
- 1:05:56was almost like threshold effort, which is good fun
- 1:05:58considering it's like 4 minute case.
- 1:06:01And then two of those runs were actually on back-to-back days,
- 1:06:05which to be honest is pretty naughty of me because it was I
- 1:06:08haven't seen Steve for like 3 weeks.
- 1:06:10So the program had went up until this point where I'm running
- 1:06:14half an hour every other day. And yeah, maybe I will get told
- 1:06:20off for doing that, but it's kinda to, this isn't really a
- 1:06:24justification. We are running with our friend
- 1:06:27up there the next day. And I was kind of at the point
- 1:06:30where like I've just been getting so much positive
- 1:06:32reinforcement for the past month or so.
- 1:06:34I was like, well, I'll just try a back-to-back day and kind of
- 1:06:37see I'm going to have to try it eventually.
- 1:06:40But Steve probably would have said we'll do half an hour today
- 1:06:43and then if you're going to run tomorrow, just do like 15
- 1:06:46minutes. But I've done 35 back-to-back.
- 1:06:49And I think it was OK, to be honest with you, no different
- 1:06:52than how it's felt all the way along.
- 1:06:54And then I've just resumed back and going every other day
- 1:06:58because I think I'm due in with Steve next week to kind of look
- 1:07:02at how we increase the frequency now seen as the volume is up to
- 1:07:0640 minutes tomorrow. So yeah, certainly getting back
- 1:07:10to where we want to be. And how is the how do you feel
- 1:07:14just getting up to that steady pace a bit of fun?
- 1:07:17Yeah, good fun because you're not going fast, but you're
- 1:07:20working hard so it doesn't really matter.
- 1:07:22Yeah. The the effect is the effect and
- 1:07:26it's good fun because you, you just know that you get faster
- 1:07:29anyway just off doing that sort of shit.
- 1:07:32That's awesome. I failed to admit that, you
- 1:07:35know, last week I'd done the Centennial Park run in Sydney.
- 1:07:39My plan was to just run like 4 fifteens or something because 5K
- 1:07:44then would have, I know it would have been within my targeted
- 1:07:49allowance of like running time. And then I was doing so and then
- 1:07:54the last Ki was like, oh this has been fine, I'll just pick it
- 1:07:57up a bit towards the line and run past a few people.
- 1:08:00Like what a fucking idiot and what am I even saying out loud
- 1:08:03here? And then I looked at my watch
- 1:08:06after the race and I ran the last K in 326 and I was like, Oh
- 1:08:09yeah, that's a bit naughty. So yeah, back to normal now.
- 1:08:18The the the the fire still burnt bright but then just wanted to
- 1:08:23check. Still got that smoke somewhere
- 1:08:25there. Yeah, was back up back on the
- 1:08:27old two wheels today. Did say that.
- 1:08:32Yeah, the boys cycling club was scared to see me back on two
- 1:08:37wheels. See that?
- 1:08:40No. Were you back on there yesterday
- 1:08:42or? No, but I rode today and I've
- 1:08:45made it public on Strava and Ant.
- 1:08:49He post comment did he? He tagged Santi and said we're
- 1:08:54in trouble again. Fucking hell, the fact that you
- 1:08:59know, you've got cycling Bros, like, what have you become?
- 1:09:03Well, this is it. This morning I joined you for a
- 1:09:06coffee after your run, didn't I? And I was copping a bit of shit
- 1:09:09off Susie because I was stood there in full lycra.
- 1:09:12Lycra bottoms. I couldn't believe it.
- 1:09:15Santa has been all Father. Christmas has been very kind to
- 1:09:19you. The sad transition has been
- 1:09:22made, but now we're going to try and transition back.
- 1:09:26So yeah, it's good we're getting there.
- 1:09:29How about you? Yeah, another another week of
- 1:09:33progress. I think I can whip through it,
- 1:09:38but yeah, this week, at the moment, this time of year,
- 1:09:42there's a couple of times a year where work's particularly busy.
- 1:09:46So what that's meant is, yeah, just a lot of commutes, really.
- 1:09:51Not that I was going to do much else, but yeah, commuted into
- 1:09:55the office as per just like old times on a Monday and then that.
- 1:10:00Means you're back. It look, in some ways it is,
- 1:10:03yeah. So this must be the second or
- 1:10:06third week where I've started commuting again.
- 1:10:08And, and I did say to a couple of months ago how how excited I
- 1:10:13would be just at the ability to be able to commute.
- 1:10:15So it has been really nice. Yeah.
- 1:10:18Commuted into the office on Monday and then commuted to the
- 1:10:21gym, did a full lift like session there and then ran home
- 1:10:27from there. And even that's an improvement.
- 1:10:29Like I had attempted that about three or four weeks ago.
- 1:10:34And the run after the gym after doing a heap of like a exercises
- 1:10:39in and around that area was too much and I regretted running
- 1:10:43home after that was a bit sore. So yeah, for that to all be
- 1:10:48pleasant, it was nice. Tuesday just 30 minutes in the
- 1:10:51morning and then in the afternoon I did 3K warm up and
- 1:10:56then 3 by 8 minutes on the treadmill at 17 1/2 KS, an hour
- 1:11:01on the tready and then yeah, 3K cooldown.
- 1:11:06What 17 1/2 KS an hour pays. 33 to 25 per K.
- 1:11:13How's that feeling? Yeah it feels fine, maybe half
- 1:11:17but fairly much like a mild degree of discomfort but not
- 1:11:21anything too severe. But I just find if I the quicker
- 1:11:27I go the the more likely it is to be a bit uncomfortable.
- 1:11:31So I'm just trying to do as much as I can without getting going
- 1:11:35too quick and and so these moderate work, this moderate
- 1:11:38work seems to be the safest way to do it.
- 1:11:40And I'm just trying to layer in training load and and jogging
- 1:11:44seems the easiest way to layer in load without angering my
- 1:11:48pelvis. So.
- 1:11:49And how does that sort of pace feel on your lungs and reflect
- 1:11:53on your heart rate? On the treaty, it's really hard
- 1:11:57to tell because it's not very high, but I think that's often a
- 1:12:01function of the trendy treadmill running for me.
- 1:12:03Like it's harder to get the heart rate as high, but I did
- 1:12:06the same workout on Saturday so I get a bit more of an
- 1:12:10indication there. I'm the same on the treadmill.
- 1:12:13I struggled to get my heart rate high because I think the
- 1:12:16treadmill does a lot more work. Yeah.
- 1:12:18Does like work for you? Yeah.
- 1:12:20But like, that's not a bad thing either because just way more
- 1:12:23controlled so. So yeah.
- 1:12:26So my heart rate average was 150.
- 1:12:29One beats average pace was 336 with my the two-minute jog in
- 1:12:37between. But yeah, maybe it got up to
- 1:12:41like 160 heart rate, which is that that's like steady for you
- 1:12:46typically, isn't it? That's what.
- 1:12:48I mean, yeah, whereas so. I mean, I take that, but it
- 1:12:53wasn't that it wasn't that flattering when I was on the on
- 1:12:56the ground. Later on, later in the week,
- 1:13:00Wednesday ran into the office and then yeah, they start
- 1:13:03turning into night runs so late running home.
- 1:13:09And then again Thursday. I was going to do another steady
- 1:13:13do something on Thursday but I didn't leave the office till
- 1:13:15about 11:00 so I just jogged straight home.
- 1:13:20So you in the office there from 8:30?
- 1:13:24AM ish until 11:00 PM Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:29It's a long day. So literally just and so when
- 1:13:31they were getting that long, like I was working the night
- 1:13:34some other other nights, I was just wrecked by the end of the
- 1:13:36week. So I just jogged again Thursday.
- 1:13:39Just in and out of the office Friday.
- 1:13:41The same in and out of the. Office on that 11:00 PM day, how
- 1:13:46much money you're. Spending on food in the office
- 1:13:48there we get end of year like snacks so.
- 1:13:53We have like and none of it's good like a lot of like
- 1:13:57chocolates and lollies and those sorts of things.
- 1:13:59So between that and then we will order in food.
- 1:14:03So yeah, I wouldn't say it's the most nutritious meals, but
- 1:14:11certainly caloric intakes out there.
- 1:14:14But like, you don't really work for the rest of the year then,
- 1:14:16so it's alright, isn't that? But it says the.
- 1:14:21Bloke that you just you just got in from your sleep pod with that
- 1:14:24one or. The LIT team is, I think, bigger
- 1:14:30than like. Our engineering team at the
- 1:14:33minute, it's crazy. It's what a what a world.
- 1:14:37Hey, what a skill set I have. Oh, you're busy, Flat out
- 1:14:40cybersecurity, all that sort of stuff.
- 1:14:42If these are hiring, I'll come back over to Perth mate, you
- 1:14:45know, come join. Me.
- 1:14:47Communicate with me. Yeah, man, we could.
- 1:14:49Have so much fun. We could double double T.
- 1:14:52There's a guy. There's a guy who's got system.
- 1:14:55Issues now and Owens just had. Them on hold for the past 90
- 1:14:57minutes. Just turn on and off.
- 1:15:06It took us 40 episodes for me to sort my for you to get me to
- 1:15:09sort. My audio out so tired remotely
- 1:15:14have you? Tried changing the settings.
- 1:15:20So. Yeah, Saturday, Bit of a.
- 1:15:22Sleep in and then I went out to Lake Mungo for a on foot semi
- 1:15:26workout. So I did a lap as a warm up, few
- 1:15:30strides and then yeah, same 3 by 8 minutes.
- 1:15:33Tried to keep it around that 325 pace for the 8 minutes and then
- 1:15:37around 4 minutes or just under for the for the jogs felt
- 1:15:41decent. Like didn't didn't feel
- 1:15:43completely not uncomfortable, but didn't feel felt like I
- 1:15:49still got out and did 90 minutes today, but heart rate up.
- 1:15:53So heart rate at 171 to 20 beats higher for that one, albeit
- 1:15:57around lunchtime, but it wasn't particularly hot and I'm
- 1:16:00probably a bit tired to be honest after a pretty big
- 1:16:03working week. How does it feel like
- 1:16:05mechanically to hit 320? Fives.
- 1:16:08Obviously it's a little bit tough on the breathing side of
- 1:16:12things. Not too bad.
- 1:16:14Like not not, you know. It's taken a while though, like
- 1:16:19the first time, you know, when I did those strides maybe a month
- 1:16:21ago at the track, felt awful. I felt those hundred and 50s
- 1:16:26felt terrible like mechanically and stuff.
- 1:16:28But now like that sort of pace doesn't feel unpleasant, feels
- 1:16:32fine. So the hope is just to try and
- 1:16:35do a bit more of it really. I'm still, it's just like I did
- 1:16:4090 minutes. So then I've done 90 minutes
- 1:16:42cool down, did 90 minutes today and it just feels I'm just a bit
- 1:16:45tight. Like my hammy gets a bit tight,
- 1:16:47my doctor gets a bit tight, my right glute gets a bit tight.
- 1:16:50Like it's all as I'm loading everything up.
- 1:16:53Everything's a bit unpleasant, but it's not.
- 1:16:58Terrible SO. Week of about 120 something
- 1:17:03case. Yeah.
- 1:17:05Ticket. You know, ticking boxes better
- 1:17:08than the week before. Yeah.
- 1:17:11Hopefully. Onwards and upwards.
- 1:17:13You're good. Nice week.
- 1:17:17And you, you took. You took my.
- 1:17:18Friend on a little tour of Perth.
- 1:17:20This morning, didn't you? We did.
- 1:17:22In the long run, yeah. Do you say if?
- 1:17:25He enjoyed that, Yeah, he said. He loved the roost and he loved.
- 1:17:30He loved the easy pace because otherwise he would have been
- 1:17:34flogging himself. I think he was fearful of like 4
- 1:17:37fifteens or something and it being a bit of a grind for 90
- 1:17:39minutes. Yeah, that was what I was hoping
- 1:17:42to do. But the will be the bit.
- 1:17:44Of a group so kept it social. Who's your friend?
- 1:17:47Wasn't there to just drop everyone.
- 1:17:52Who's this friend? Like a friend from school is
- 1:17:57over. Visiting at the minute and he
- 1:17:59runs, he's run 17 low or. Something but he kind of like.
- 1:18:04Dips in and out, like he'll train for a bit, maybe do one
- 1:18:07race and then go to weightlifting and then come back
- 1:18:10to running. So at the minute he's in his
- 1:18:12little running spell. So you let him off with Dean of
- 1:18:15our people? Fed into the wolves?
- 1:18:18No, I wasn't very kind. We're we're, we're we Josh and
- 1:18:23and a bit of his training group. So we had a yeah, it was maybe
- 1:18:28what, six of us, Suzanne, like a yeah, like a maybe, yeah, 68.
- 1:18:38So it's quite it was very nice. Yeah.
- 1:18:40Josh is a good regulator of pace, isn't he?
- 1:18:43Keeps it. Sensible kept it very, very,
- 1:18:45very sensible, so we all stayed together.
- 1:18:48But yeah, that's my week, right? Like a crack on mine.
- 1:18:53Yeah, we want to hear about this super session.
- 1:18:56It's not super. It was super painful, but all
- 1:18:59right. Starting Monday, so I took the
- 1:19:02morning off and then in the evening I am done. 45 minutes
- 1:19:08easy. I yeah, 45 minutes, 9.5 K and
- 1:19:15then I actually went to the physio after this just to get
- 1:19:20some like needle dry needling done just to try and help my
- 1:19:23legs recover as much as possible because my quads were were wrote
- 1:19:28off. Put it that way.
- 1:19:30Tuesday then I was actually meant to have my first sort of
- 1:19:34like session back, but I said I'd scrap that so I don't have
- 1:19:3945 minute elliptical in the morning.
- 1:19:41And then I jogged for 45 minutes in the evening again and that
- 1:19:45was like 10K at 4:20 sixes. So the legs were starting to
- 1:19:50come around, but I feel like if I'd done the session on the
- 1:19:53Tuesday, it just would have put me in a hole like that.
- 1:19:57Couple of hours extra recovery does the world to you.
- 1:20:00So yeah, Wednesday morning. Treadmill run so it was 3 by 8
- 1:20:07minutes off 3 minute float and so yeah, the quads start.
- 1:20:13I felt after the race the quads were the part of my body, quads
- 1:20:16on my ankle and sort of hurt the most.
- 1:20:19And so yeah, I think I started off at like 315 on the
- 1:20:23treadmill. The second 8 minutes was 310 and
- 1:20:26then at the last 8 minutes was like three O 8 or something like
- 1:20:30that. And with the ankle, like it was
- 1:20:32sore at the start. But as you get, as it warms up,
- 1:20:34it gets better. I think it's a little bit of
- 1:20:36tendonitis on my ankle because I was compensating on when I
- 1:20:39rolled it. So like I'm able to run on it.
- 1:20:42So it's and hop and all that sort of stuff.
- 1:20:44So it should be. I think she need to run through
- 1:20:46it. And on Wednesday evening I done
- 1:20:49my circuit class. Thursday I've done some more
- 1:20:54threshold. So I done 2 by 10 minutes.
- 1:20:58And this was outside. So yeah, the 10 normally like
- 1:21:05before the race I was thresholding around like 3O93O8
- 1:21:11let's say. But this Thursday morning it was
- 1:21:15the the like effort was super high for what I was running.
- 1:21:19So I think I was running like 315, but like my heart rate was
- 1:21:22super high. So I'm putting it down to
- 1:21:24fatigue, like still sort of being in the legs from the race
- 1:21:27and like a super cold morning, like up a half five and making
- 1:21:33loads of excuses. But yeah, that's one.
- 1:21:36It was 16 K wiping warp cool down and session.
- 1:21:40It was 16 K at like 4 or fives. And how come Josh should?
- 1:21:44Josh had commented. 20 question mark.
- 1:21:47I don't know because that was third, then Thursday.
- 1:21:50Evening I started doing gym again, so leading up to Valencia
- 1:21:54I said I didn't do gym for like 3 weeks and normally I do it
- 1:21:57like sort of twice a week between circuits and then a
- 1:22:00heavy sort of lift. So I've introduced that back
- 1:22:03into this session this week, my training this week.
- 1:22:06So that was Thursday evening, Friday totally off I went for,
- 1:22:12got a massage and then Saturday. So Saturday was a pretty
- 1:22:19straightforward session. It was just 8 * 400 meters with
- 1:22:25a 3 minute break in between each 400.
- 1:22:28So if you like, yeah. How fast are these four
- 1:22:32hundreds? So the set the whole aim of this
- 1:22:35session was. To basically just go as hard as
- 1:22:40I could, like dig myself a hole. You sound 62.
- 1:22:43I said to you. Hold on a minute.
- 1:22:45Oh, no. Yeah, usual warm up, cool down
- 1:22:48and all that. Sort of stuff.
- 1:22:50And you like I had Sarah, my Sarah training partner, she was,
- 1:22:57she'd run the 1st 200 and drop off with me drop off and then I
- 1:23:00carry on for 200. And so yes, started off 1st 400
- 1:23:0860 Oh yeah, perfect flood that system.
- 1:23:13Second 459. Oh no, because you know when you
- 1:23:19start a. Session 1, whatever you say is
- 1:23:22your. First one you now.
- 1:23:23Always want to better it as you know.
- 1:23:25I know I should have started like a 64 or something anyway.
- 1:23:296060 and guys when I say every time I hit 200 meters I felt
- 1:23:35like I wanted to get sick like tight sniper Oh my God like.
- 1:23:41When I'd finish. I just, I couldn't catch my
- 1:23:43breath, even though I had three minutes to catch my breath.
- 1:23:46My legs were flooded. So then the fifth one was 63,
- 1:23:53the 6th 1 was a 62. Well, the rest of them were 60
- 1:23:58twos. So I sort of held it together.
- 1:23:59That's not bad at all. I forgot like every time I hit.
- 1:24:04So we. Started on a bend.
- 1:24:08We we yeah. So I started on like, let's say
- 1:24:12where the 300m mark is, if you get me.
- 1:24:17So I finished like coming around the bend and I, I don't know, I
- 1:24:20feel like it's easier to finish on a straight, but anyway, umm.
- 1:24:24But yeah, for the last like 300 meters, I genuinely felt I was
- 1:24:27like running a quicksand like my arms.
- 1:24:29I felt accepted on with the arms, just arms going
- 1:24:31everywhere. Did you guys ever do workouts in
- 1:24:35high school or when you were younger like.
- 1:24:37So I I did a bit of like running as a kid and you would get to
- 1:24:41the end of the session and that last 400 almost be that feeling
- 1:24:44where it's like, OK, I I wouldn't be able to do another
- 1:24:47Rep. You know, like I'm that flooded
- 1:24:50that if you asked me to try, I just wouldn't finish.
- 1:24:53Like that's what you the talks for taking me back to those
- 1:24:56sorts of just high lactate. Yeah, so.
- 1:25:01After the last. One, it was pissing.
- 1:25:03Rain as well, because typical so do you know the way when you see
- 1:25:06them in like dull strum and all this and they're finished they
- 1:25:10can just lie on the ground yeah we can't lie on the ground here
- 1:25:12because it's fucking so so umm I went into the clubhouse and I
- 1:25:16literally just. Sat on the.
- 1:25:17Stairs for like 10-15 minutes I couldn't lift my head up by such
- 1:25:21a headache I felt like getting sick.
- 1:25:23I Gen. I'd never done a session like
- 1:25:25this before in my life and I don't know how people train like
- 1:25:28that like that. I'm eleven Lac trap club.
- 1:25:31They do a load to them lactic sessions like I don't know how.
- 1:25:34No, it'll do me the world of good, but because I've never
- 1:25:37like put my body like true that stimulus before, but umm, yeah,
- 1:25:42I wouldn't want to be doing that often.
- 1:25:44Did you, did you take any bicarb or nomio or anything like that?
- 1:25:48Ahead of it, no, I see. I I felt like the point of this.
- 1:25:52Session was to suffer so tick I just yeah, yeah, tick.
- 1:25:58It was ticked after Rep 2 after I was like just going to be a
- 1:26:02long more 6 reps but yeah, it's super, super hard.
- 1:26:07I'm like on my cool down. My first K was like a 640, which
- 1:26:15yeah, it's not normally what the speed I got right cool down
- 1:26:19that. But look, it was grand that
- 1:26:22evening. I came around and I I don't 45
- 1:26:26minutes. So 10K four 30s and I was grand.
- 1:26:30It was just like for that like half an hour after the session I
- 1:26:33was just totally wrote off like in bits.
- 1:26:37Any dumbs in like your arms or your shoulders off all?
- 1:26:40The swinging because I can remember like one or two
- 1:26:43occasions of having Dom's in my arms the next day, just swimming
- 1:26:47down that last straight my arms weren't that bad, but this
- 1:26:51morning when I woke up my. Hamstrings, I felt like I'm
- 1:26:54like, that was the first time I've used my hamstrings like
- 1:26:56ever have Yeah, they're tight. So for my long run this morning,
- 1:27:01I got up like 7 just like stretched them out and like
- 1:27:03rolled them out just to get the moving again.
- 1:27:06But yeah, this morning I got out and done 90 minutes and with a
- 1:27:1115 minute like bit of threshold in the middle.
- 1:27:15So that was 23 kilometers in 350 sevens average.
- 1:27:19So yeah, I think that's 96 K for the week.
- 1:27:25And yeah, just slowly pick it back up now for a little while
- 1:27:31until arm, I think of a 1500 meter in two week, in two weeks.
- 1:27:35So that'll be interesting to see.
- 1:27:37Try and break 4 minutes. Hopefully we'll see what
- 1:27:40happens. But yeah, just wants to go with
- 1:27:44the 1500 just to a bit more. Fun than than than serious, but
- 1:27:49hopefully just prime you for the 5K.
- 1:27:51Yeah, basically see what I can do or feel like I've never ran
- 1:27:53one before and. I feel like it's such like AI
- 1:27:56don't know, let's say a sexy event like everyone like likes
- 1:28:00the 1500. So just to see what I can do in
- 1:28:02it. And yeah, it won't like it'll
- 1:28:05help the light speed because like, yeah, like that again,
- 1:28:08like if you're running 60s or 60 twos when you go back to the 5K
- 1:28:13then you're like 6867. That should feel like easier.
- 1:28:16So that's the plan. But yeah, I just have to be
- 1:28:21careful. Like again, this, I'm going to
- 1:28:22be super cautious now for the next couple of days because like
- 1:28:25I'd like 10K like only this time last week, hard chest in hard
- 1:28:29session yesterday. So that's why you took it easy
- 1:28:32in that 15 minutes or? Threshold today.
- 1:28:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did. Heart rate looked looked like it
- 1:28:44was up a. Bit in that long run, but that's
- 1:28:46why I have. Yeah, it was, but I'm carrying
- 1:28:48the fatigue down from yesterday. As well, and it looked like it
- 1:28:51was hilly as well. Hey, yeah, it's sort of hilly.
- 1:28:54Not hard. That's a.
- 1:28:55That's a solid 90. Minutes of work.
- 1:28:58And what was the elevation 100 and. 44 meters.
- 1:29:01So yeah, that's that's decent amount.
- 1:29:05What was the average heart? Rate, can you see that?
- 1:29:07I don't know, I just you can. Just say yeah, 152 average high.
- 1:29:11Rate, so that's high for. Like.
- 1:29:15That's like a moderate run. Not unusual.
- 1:29:17It's like your normal long. Run, but it's yeah, the
- 1:29:21threshold I'm allowed get up. Well, the aim for the threshold.
- 1:29:23Is to get up like mid high one 70s yeah, so.
- 1:29:28That would have, yeah. So look what I, what I wanted to
- 1:29:32do with the long run. I sort of got out of it.
- 1:29:33So just now for the rest, try and loosen out the hamstrings
- 1:29:36again because they started to seize up in that bit of
- 1:29:39threshold. And yeah, it was super icy.
- 1:29:42So I, I normally have a different route for this long
- 1:29:45run and but I just don't my threshold around the track
- 1:29:48because I was afraid of like slipping or freaking twist my
- 1:29:51ankle or something stupid. Good way, Yeah.
- 1:29:54Although you're laughing about that session even though.
- 1:29:56You regressed. Ever.
- 1:29:57So slightly in the reps are still a ridiculous session
- 1:30:01really average what like 60.5 or something yeah but when you
- 1:30:05think about like the. Good boys who are running like
- 1:30:101245, like are they holding them like they're holding like 62 for
- 1:30:15like 12 1/2 laps, which is like, it's actually hard to
- 1:30:20comprehend. When I'm doing A to them and
- 1:30:24I've 3 minutes break in between. It's phenomenal.
- 1:30:27It's just, yeah. It's crazy conditioning.
- 1:30:31Them boys. But yeah, look, it was decent.
- 1:30:34I won't be doing it again for a little while.
- 1:30:36Thank God. I'm like how 800 meter runners
- 1:30:40train and all that. Like, yeah, it's just torture.
- 1:30:43But also really fun. I feel like you've, you know,
- 1:30:46you and your coach. Are doing a good job of like how
- 1:30:49much fun is it to in terms of just mentally and stuff you get
- 1:30:53to try something that's completely different new
- 1:30:55stimulant, you know, very different stimulus for your body
- 1:30:58will help you for the 5K Yeah, but also just fun to RIP with
- 1:31:03the big, big recoveries like you've done a few now where
- 1:31:06those those longer recoveries and you know what is required of
- 1:31:10you, which is to suffer. Yeah.
- 1:31:13And I feel like it's a a certain type of training I've never done
- 1:31:15before, like I've never done 1. Alactic session like that.
- 1:31:18So sort of like another thing that will hopefully like sort of
- 1:31:22improve me long term. So yeah, but I feel like I just
- 1:31:25had to get the base in or my coaches, like you have to get a
- 1:31:27base in to before you do that type of stuff or else you just
- 1:31:30breakdown. So yeah, we'll know in a couple
- 1:31:33of weeks if I was strong enough. She sounds like a very wise man,
- 1:31:37Mr. Pass. That's it.
- 1:31:40Very wise. Did you say what?
- 1:31:42Shoes you wore for this? Were you in Spikes?
- 1:31:45Also I oh before that. Before the 8 by 400, I don't a 6
- 1:31:51minute threshold as well. So I don't the six minute
- 1:31:53threshold in my Romeros, just my standard Romeros.
- 1:31:59And then I done the session in Streak Flies.
- 1:32:03So basically a spike, the closest thing to a spike without
- 1:32:07wearing a spike. But yeah, I really like them.
- 1:32:11But I'll wear the I'll wear the Puma ones again for for armor,
- 1:32:17Yeah. Did we talk about the shoes for
- 1:32:18the rest? I don't even.
- 1:32:20Know, but yeah, I wore. That Puma fast or threes, Yeah.
- 1:32:25And what do you what were your impressions out of?
- 1:32:29All the Super SO. Super shoes I've tried are some
- 1:32:32old Nike Alpha Flies and wore them in 10 mile when I came home
- 1:32:39and they gave me blisters so they're never going to be worn
- 1:32:42again. I've got these like second
- 1:32:45generation ASIC super shoes which I got when as soon as I
- 1:32:48arrived to Australia and I do some my treasure work in them.
- 1:32:52I do like them. I like when I feel the ground.
- 1:32:54That's why I think I'd like the Brooks ones that Jake wears
- 1:32:58because he says you can feel the ground in them a little bit more
- 1:33:00traditional type shoe. Yeah, I've got the New Balance.
- 1:33:04Super comfy for. Not a fan of them, they're too
- 1:33:06soft and then I've got these Puma ones, but I read they're
- 1:33:10firm on the ground so you can sort of feel the ground like
- 1:33:13feel the spring off. Whereas I'd love to try the ASIC
- 1:33:17ones as well, but umm, I'm they look super soft and squishy,
- 1:33:22which I don't think I'll like the New Balance ones, The new
- 1:33:25New Balance ones. I'd like to try them.
- 1:33:26I tried on Andrew's ones. He was changing his shoes and I
- 1:33:30just grabbed a pair and like tried them on.
- 1:33:32He was probably like, what the folks he doing, but umm, yeah,
- 1:33:37yeah, no. But I'm just so interested.
- 1:33:42In the shoes. But I feel like I'd like them as
- 1:33:44well. But yeah, I'm up for trying.
- 1:33:48I think I've seen a picture of him.
- 1:33:52He what? He ran Houston.
- 1:33:54He's a Brooks athlete. He trains with Connor Mance,
- 1:33:58Casey Clinger. I think he was wearing the new
- 1:34:00Brooks super shoe. And again, it looks like a firm
- 1:34:04or super shoot that's not too spongy and but I'd have to try
- 1:34:08them Hoker ones as well. Like they must be half decent if
- 1:34:11all the boys are running super fast.
- 1:34:13And that's just the issue that, yeah, that's another one I'd
- 1:34:18like to turn. Yeah, like that feels like to
- 1:34:21talking. About something that's a bit
- 1:34:22more. Traditional under foot like
- 1:34:25really grippy but but is a bit more neutral and you have to
- 1:34:29generate a bit of your own. But super responsive and snappy
- 1:34:32and lot like I think good shooter and they're also too
- 1:34:37expensive. You don't want to cough up.
- 1:34:39And that's important. But there's they're more sense
- 1:34:41of an Ireland than they're on Australia.
- 1:34:43Like an Ireland. They could be like €200, which
- 1:34:45is insane, $500 Australian dollars, which is fucking
- 1:34:49stupid. So you.
- 1:34:50Don't want to buy one and. Then not like it like you have
- 1:34:52to try them on the shop whilst on this The Shoe talk on last
- 1:34:56week's episode. Where we don't like the kind of
- 1:34:59the villain shoes of last year, the shit ones are the ones that
- 1:35:01we didn't get along with and we're talking about needing like
- 1:35:04some independent analysis and reviews of shoes.
- 1:35:08Chris from the WA Running podcast sent us a link to a
- 1:35:12website calledrunrepeat.com and he says check out this website
- 1:35:17for independent reviews of just about every shoe on the market.
- 1:35:20Reviewed to the absolute NTH degree, this website is the best
- 1:35:23genuine scientific analysis of every shoe.
- 1:35:26So yeah, that's runrepeat.com for any listeners who are
- 1:35:30interested. Could be a useful tool.
- 1:35:33Absolutely, because there's so much.
- 1:35:34Thanks for sending the shy out there.

- 1:35:53like that. Wasn't it just for clarity for
- 1:35:55listeners contract situations? Like we just need more clarity.
- 1:36:00Just yeah, send your contracts through to the.
- 1:36:03To the DMS and we'll we'll review them for you.
