- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:18Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. In this episode three and today
- 0:22Speaker 1: the show, We've got Dan in Fault back with us,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and today we're running through the what would you do?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Gauntlet of hypothetical deer hunting scenarios. All right, welcome to
- 0:40Speaker 1: the wire to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Today we're back with our third installment of this what
- 0:47Speaker 1: would so and so do? Format series of sorts. This
- 0:53Speaker 1: new idea that I started a few weeks ago, as
- 0:55Speaker 1: you've heard me discuss, in which I'm trying to find
- 0:58Speaker 1: new ways to get inside the minds of some of
- 1:02Speaker 1: the best deer hunters in the country. Right, We've been
- 1:04Speaker 1: doing this for seven years. We've talked to hundreds of
- 1:06Speaker 1: different deer hunters. There's hundreds of different deer hunting podcasts
- 1:10Speaker 1: out there now, and a lot of it's the kind
- 1:13Speaker 1: of same thing. So how can we get to that
- 1:17Speaker 1: next level? That's what I'm wondering, and that's what this story,
- 1:21Speaker 1: this situational type approach attempts to do. If you haven't
- 1:25Speaker 1: listened to the last couple episodes of John Eberhardt or
- 1:28Speaker 1: Steve Bartilla, here's the gist. Basically, I'm going to present
- 1:33Speaker 1: our guest today as Dan in fault with a hypothetical scenario,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and then I'm going to ask him to explain what
- 1:39Speaker 1: he would do and why he would do it. Now.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Dan is probably familiar to a lot of you. He's
- 1:44Speaker 1: been on the show I think three different times, um
- 1:47Speaker 1: and he's just well known across many other platforms. He's
- 1:50Speaker 1: the founder of the Hunting Beast forum and YouTube channel
- 1:54Speaker 1: uh Hunting Beast Gear. He's been all over the place.
- 1:57Speaker 1: He's really popularized, popular rised much of the much of
- 2:03Speaker 1: the strategy around hunting buck beds and how you can
- 2:08Speaker 1: really form your whole hunting premise around that. Um. So,
- 2:13Speaker 1: if you are into hunting beds, if you're wanting to
- 2:16Speaker 1: better understand buck betting ears, if you're interested in hunting
- 2:19Speaker 1: hill country or swamp country, all these things are things
- 2:23Speaker 1: that Dan really specializes in. He's a tremendous resource. If
- 2:28Speaker 1: you have not heard our first couple episodes with him,
- 2:30Speaker 1: I would recommend listening to those first, because that's where
- 2:34Speaker 1: we kind of cover off on his basic things, like
- 2:36Speaker 1: that's where we get to understand how he thinks about
- 2:38Speaker 1: hill country betting, what he thinks about swamp betting, what
- 2:42Speaker 1: he thinks about how you can predict where these betting
- 2:44Speaker 1: locations are, and how to properly scout and things like that.
- 2:46Speaker 1: That's where you get the foundational stuff. I kind of
- 2:49Speaker 1: assume that knowledge in this conversation, and so I start
- 2:52Speaker 1: asking Dan kind of the next level questions. I put
- 2:55Speaker 1: out that scenario and then I asked, you know, what
- 2:57Speaker 1: would you do if I put you with this slight
- 3:00Speaker 1: variation or that variation. So having the background will help you. UM.
- 3:06Speaker 1: That said, you don't have to do that. You can listen.
- 3:09Speaker 1: You're probably gonna still get a lot from today too.
- 3:11Speaker 1: But go back and search for Dan Infault in the
- 3:13Speaker 1: Wired Done archives. He was in one of the first
- 3:15Speaker 1: couple episodes. UM, and then he came back on again
- 3:19Speaker 1: the following year in two thousand fifteen, and then finally
- 3:22Speaker 1: he was on I think two summers ago. I brought
- 3:24Speaker 1: him on and Andy May and Joe L. Singer helped
- 3:27Speaker 1: me ask a bunch of questions and that was really
- 3:29Speaker 1: helpful too. So today we cover a lot of different ground.
- 3:35Speaker 1: We dive into some different approaches Dan has to hunting,
- 3:39Speaker 1: farm ground. We do talk about swamp and hill country bedding.
- 3:43Speaker 1: We examined some different scenarios with how Dan handles hunting
- 3:47Speaker 1: pressure and different situations where other people mess up his
- 3:50Speaker 1: hunts or where he messes up his hunts. UM. I
- 3:53Speaker 1: do ask him some of the same questions I asked
- 3:56Speaker 1: John Steve, so it's interesting to compare their responses, um
- 4:00Speaker 1: and and just in general, I think this one is
- 4:04Speaker 1: is fascinating to end up being, um just as good
- 4:07Speaker 1: as I was hoping it was going to be. I
- 4:08Speaker 1: hope you enjoy it. I think we'll just get right
- 4:12Speaker 1: into it. Let you enjoy this one. We're going to
- 4:14Speaker 1: do at least one more of these what would you
- 4:16Speaker 1: do podcasts with someone very different. My goal here is
- 4:20Speaker 1: to have like two guys that were very public land
- 4:23Speaker 1: focused and two guys that have a little bit more
- 4:25Speaker 1: of a management uh set of experiences, so we can
- 4:28Speaker 1: compare and contrast those two styles, and I think it's
- 4:32Speaker 1: gonna be helpful so well that all the way, I
- 4:36Speaker 1: just want to mention one more thing, and that is
- 4:38Speaker 1: just you know, every once in a while I want
- 4:41Speaker 1: to make sure to thank everybody in the front of
- 4:43Speaker 1: the episode for listening. I always mentioned at the end,
- 4:46Speaker 1: but maybe some of you shut it off before then.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So I just want to say, Hey, I appreciate you guys.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I appreciate you listening. I appreciate you picking up copies
- 4:54Speaker 1: of my book That Wild Country. I appreciate you guys
- 4:57Speaker 1: following wire done on social media and engaging and commenting
- 5:00Speaker 1: and you know, sending me messages and feedback, all of
- 5:03Speaker 1: that stuff. It is. It's amazing. I appreciate it. It
- 5:07Speaker 1: makes this whole thing a community, and that's a special thing.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And I think that those of you that listen and
- 5:13Speaker 1: that are part of this Wired Hunt community, you guys
- 5:16Speaker 1: and girls are just some of the coolest hunters out
- 5:20Speaker 1: there as far as I'm concerned. And I'm just glad
- 5:23Speaker 1: to be able to do this thing called life and
- 5:26Speaker 1: hunting with you guys uh here at least once a
- 5:29Speaker 1: week on the show. So thanks for all that. I
- 5:31Speaker 1: will also thank you for bearing with the advertisements, right,
- 5:36Speaker 1: we have got to do these ads in the podcast.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I know that's annoying. Um, I bring this up, and
- 5:42Speaker 1: I know I brought this up before. I bring it
- 5:44Speaker 1: up because it's something that can be annoying to me too,
- 5:46Speaker 1: all right. I know, listen to a show, I'm enjoying
- 5:48Speaker 1: it and all of a sudden someone busts in with
- 5:50Speaker 1: a life insurance ad. That's like, really, I feel that
- 5:54Speaker 1: way too. I get it. It's just kind of what
- 5:58Speaker 1: you gotta do to keep these things on the air
- 5:59Speaker 1: these days. And so thank you. Thank you for your patience,
- 6:03Speaker 1: thanks for smiling and laughing along when you hear me
- 6:06Speaker 1: pitching you on some new thing. Um, it is what
- 6:10Speaker 1: it is. I'm doing my best to keep this stuff
- 6:11Speaker 1: interesting to give you lots and lots of value for free.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And uh, thanks for coming along for the ride for
- 6:17Speaker 1: the rest of it. So that is out of the way.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I've talked for too long. I know you want to
- 6:22Speaker 1: hear from Dan in Fault, So let's get right to
- 6:26Speaker 1: it with our conversation with Dan in Fault, and we're
- 6:29Speaker 1: gonna figure out what would Dan in Fault do. Alright,
- 6:33Speaker 1: back with me on the line. We've got the one
- 6:35Speaker 1: and only Dan in Fault. Dan, thank you for for
- 6:38Speaker 1: hopping on the show. Agun, You're no problem. I was.
- 6:42Speaker 1: We were just talking a second ago about you know,
- 6:45Speaker 1: how times have changed a little bit for for you
- 6:47Speaker 1: and what I've got going on over here. And gosh,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I think the first time I had you on the
- 6:52Speaker 1: podcast was one of the first maybe five or episodes
- 6:56Speaker 1: of Wired Hunt ever, so that would have been back
- 6:59Speaker 1: in two thousand fourteen, So that was seven years ago
- 7:02Speaker 1: that we did our first podcast together. Um, which is
- 7:06Speaker 1: kind of crazy how fast that whole time period is gone.
- 7:09Speaker 1: But but since I didn't realize that, Yeah, aren't that
- 7:12Speaker 1: crazy since that point? How many different podcast episodes do
- 7:17Speaker 1: you think you've done? Because you've been on our show,
- 7:19Speaker 1: I think five times, four or five times, but I
- 7:21Speaker 1: know there've been eight billion different podcasts out there. How
- 7:24Speaker 1: many interviews like this have you had to do? I know,
- 7:28Speaker 1: I don't know. I uh, I usually say yes. Sstantly
- 7:31Speaker 1: asked me, Um, you know if I have time, and
- 7:35Speaker 1: I probably end up on at least one a week. Wow,
- 7:38Speaker 1: that's amazing. That's that's just people probably people definitely don't
- 7:43Speaker 1: realize what a what a commitment that is, like, what
- 7:47Speaker 1: a time How generous you are with your time to
- 7:49Speaker 1: do that. That's that's substantial. Thank you Dan for not
- 7:52Speaker 1: only doing my podcast, but for doing everybody else's too,
- 7:55Speaker 1: because I'm sure a lot of people are benefiting from that.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Um that that is funny though, because it perfectly fits
- 8:04Speaker 1: into my idea for today's show, because I've been thinking
- 8:07Speaker 1: a lot lately about how you know, I've been doing
- 8:09Speaker 1: this podcast for seven years, and since that, there's been
- 8:13Speaker 1: all sorts of other podcasts that have started up, and
- 8:16Speaker 1: everyone's chatting with everyone, and I've been trying to figure
- 8:18Speaker 1: out new ways to kind of dig into that next level.
- 8:21Speaker 1: How can we learn something new from people even if
- 8:23Speaker 1: we've talked to them before. How do we kind of
- 8:26Speaker 1: dig in even deeper? And the idea I had was
- 8:30Speaker 1: to start focusing more on specific scenarios. So I've started
- 8:35Speaker 1: to do a kind of a what would so and
- 8:37Speaker 1: so do? Series that meaning basically, out get someone like
- 8:41Speaker 1: you on. And we've had a handful of the people already.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna do a few more folks after you, in
- 8:46Speaker 1: which our whole chat is going to be specific situations.
- 8:50Speaker 1: So I'm gonna paint you a picture like it's this date,
- 8:53Speaker 1: it's this time of month, and this is this scenario.
- 8:58Speaker 1: What would you do? And so I'm gonna throw a
- 8:59Speaker 1: bunch of hih patheticals, and then what I'm hoping you
- 9:02Speaker 1: can do is is explain to me what you would
- 9:04Speaker 1: do and why you would do that, what's your thought process,
- 9:08Speaker 1: how would you do it? Um, and then we'll kind
- 9:11Speaker 1: of dig in from there. It'll be kind of a
- 9:12Speaker 1: starting point to talk about a whole bunch of different things.
- 9:15Speaker 1: But um, but I think that I think that makes
- 9:17Speaker 1: for an interesting and different kind of conversation and maybe
- 9:20Speaker 1: a more interesting one for you too, after having done
- 9:22Speaker 1: so many of these, does that does that sound interesting
- 9:25Speaker 1: to you? Yeah? Absolutely? I mean the way questions are
- 9:30Speaker 1: asked to make a breakup podcast obviously, and uh, being
- 9:34Speaker 1: on a lot of them, meat, I noticed a lot
- 9:36Speaker 1: of people just ask you the same questions over and
- 9:38Speaker 1: over again, and it's pretty boring, you know. Um, You've
- 9:42Speaker 1: always done a really good job of mixing things up.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I'm always uh, I always have fun coming out with
- 9:46Speaker 1: you because I never know what to expect. Good. Well,
- 9:49Speaker 1: that's what I want. Try to keep you on your
- 9:52Speaker 1: toes on this one too, So so good. I'm excited
- 9:56Speaker 1: for it to Um. I've been trying to go back
- 9:59Speaker 1: and watch some of the old videos and I've been
- 10:01Speaker 1: reading some old threads I've been looking back at old
- 10:04Speaker 1: things we've talked about and kind of just got a
- 10:06Speaker 1: whole bunch of different ideas and situations percolating, as well
- 10:09Speaker 1: as some situations that I've been in personally, or even
- 10:13Speaker 1: some of my friends, some folks that are hunting Beast,
- 10:17Speaker 1: very active hunting Beast members. We've kind of all put
- 10:19Speaker 1: together a bunch of different situations that we're gonna throw
- 10:22Speaker 1: you in and see what you do. So I'm I'm
- 10:26Speaker 1: thinking we should just jump into it. If you're if
- 10:28Speaker 1: you're ready to rock, I'm ready, all right, So we're
- 10:32Speaker 1: gonna start kind of right now. It's as we're talking,
- 10:35Speaker 1: it's August three. So let's say tonight, if you had
- 10:40Speaker 1: time after we stopped, if we stopped talking, you decide
- 10:43Speaker 1: that you're gonna go out driving around just kind of
- 10:46Speaker 1: doing some general glassing. Maybe after dark you'll do a
- 10:50Speaker 1: little bit shining. And you get out in your within
- 10:54Speaker 1: the ballpark of some public land, but not right next
- 10:57Speaker 1: to it. Maybe you're about a mile or so away
- 10:59Speaker 1: from the nearest public end, and you glass at a
- 11:01Speaker 1: truly world class buck uh, like a two inch deer,
- 11:06Speaker 1: something that is not normal to see, and right away
- 11:11Speaker 1: you see him, you see where he's at. He's in private,
- 11:14Speaker 1: but there is public about aom mile away. In this
- 11:16Speaker 1: scenario on August three, what do you do? Do you
- 11:20Speaker 1: immediately seek permission on that private land or do you
- 11:22Speaker 1: go and try to focus on could he possibly be
- 11:25Speaker 1: in that public kind of what's your what's your next
- 11:28Speaker 1: steps over the next couple of days. If you decided like, hey,
- 11:31Speaker 1: I really want to try to get a chance of this, dear, well,
- 11:36Speaker 1: I've been in that situation a few times and usually
- 11:39Speaker 1: involves a little of everything you just said. I mean,
- 11:42Speaker 1: you try to gain permission without without putting a spotlight
- 11:47Speaker 1: of why you want to hunt there. Um because dear
- 11:50Speaker 1: like that caused a lot of attention obviously, UM. But
- 11:53Speaker 1: I'm also going to, um keep an eye on them, monitoring.
- 11:57Speaker 1: So I'm gonna start looking for that deer. I'm I'm
- 12:00Speaker 1: gonna shift my efforts to that area, shine around, glass around,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and try to put together as he's going on any
- 12:07Speaker 1: other farms, A is he going onto the public? Is
- 12:09Speaker 1: here going in that direction? Um? In some cases, a
- 12:13Speaker 1: deer like that's an impossible there to hunt. He never
- 12:15Speaker 1: leaves the area that he you know, he's on and
- 12:18Speaker 1: the reason he's that biggest because they don't allow hunting
- 12:20Speaker 1: or something like that. But in a lot of cases
- 12:22Speaker 1: there they will have enough of a travel room where
- 12:25Speaker 1: they do go onto the public a little bit, or
- 12:27Speaker 1: to go onto some some small property off of the
- 12:29Speaker 1: side where you have a little bit at him. And
- 12:32Speaker 1: then it's you know, then it's that cat and mollest
- 12:34Speaker 1: thing where you gotta be careful of all when you
- 12:37Speaker 1: go in after him. If he's staying out of property
- 12:39Speaker 1: you really don't have access to, you know, just coming
- 12:42Speaker 1: over right now, and then too much pressure is gonna
- 12:43Speaker 1: put more there all the time. So a lot of
- 12:46Speaker 1: that's watching from a distance. But really, my my main
- 12:49Speaker 1: plan would be to keep an eye on that deer
- 12:52Speaker 1: and and if I'm not finding I'm just keeping monitoring
- 12:54Speaker 1: all the fields around They're working my way out until
- 12:57Speaker 1: I find him again, and just keeping track of where
- 12:59Speaker 1: I'm seeing him and you know where he's tending to go.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And uh, in Wisconsin, here I can shine. So I
- 13:07Speaker 1: would be shining him at all different hours of the night,
- 13:09Speaker 1: trying to catch him in the morning, trying to get
- 13:11Speaker 1: the middle of night, try to catch him in the
- 13:12Speaker 1: evening without really putting too much pressure on him with
- 13:15Speaker 1: the shining either because that makes him go back further,
- 13:18Speaker 1: you know, um or stay hidden a little more, but
- 13:22Speaker 1: just getting a glimpse here and there and keeping tabs
- 13:26Speaker 1: um and really getting the pair going if you know,
- 13:30Speaker 1: I know when it comes to shining right here at night,
- 13:32Speaker 1: that you're doing that at night and draw Maybe maybe
- 13:35Speaker 1: I take that back. I guess I'll just stick with
- 13:36Speaker 1: my question, which is, how do you keep tabs on
- 13:38Speaker 1: a deer like that without drawing attention to it? Because
- 13:41Speaker 1: if you're trying to glass in the evenings, or even
- 13:44Speaker 1: if you're driving by a night and stopping for a
- 13:46Speaker 1: minute or so, inevitably there's that warrior. Someone's gonna see you.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Someone's gonna wonder, why is there this blue pickup truck
- 13:53Speaker 1: pulled off the side of the road. How do you
- 13:55Speaker 1: try to minimize that, because, like you said, you don't
- 13:57Speaker 1: want word to get out that the steers out there. Yeah,
- 14:02Speaker 1: I mean there's different ways. I mean, most of the time,
- 14:04Speaker 1: when I find a real big buck like that, it's
- 14:05Speaker 1: not real close to traffic, you know, so you do
- 14:08Speaker 1: get away with a little and I just make sure
- 14:09Speaker 1: that I'm not shining, not glassing, not doing anything with
- 14:12Speaker 1: someone drives by. I don't drive around on a truck
- 14:15Speaker 1: with stickers all over and about about hunting. Um and uh.
- 14:21Speaker 1: In a lot of cases, I use one of the
- 14:23Speaker 1: cars that we have that no sts hunt. Doesn't look
- 14:25Speaker 1: like a hunting vehicle, and I don't dress like a hunter.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Um when I'm out looking at deer. Um. So you know, Um,
- 14:34Speaker 1: sometimes in the past, UM, one real big deer I
- 14:37Speaker 1: got was hanging right next to the public land parking lot. Um.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I had a station wagon at the time. I mean
- 14:43Speaker 1: it's been talked about a lot. I had I break
- 14:46Speaker 1: for raccoon stickers out of them parking parking lot. And
- 14:50Speaker 1: I believe I'm reading the paper when I monitor that
- 14:52Speaker 1: buck whenever somebody come in here, I just picked the
- 14:54Speaker 1: paper up and look at it. Um. But you know
- 14:58Speaker 1: it does take being a little cover and and and careful. Yeah,
- 15:04Speaker 1: that's that is the That's a fine line to try
- 15:07Speaker 1: to walk between getting the intel and possibly all for
- 15:10Speaker 1: doing it. Though. UM. Now let's say you well, you
- 15:15Speaker 1: mentioned sometimes they've got this travel, They travel enough that
- 15:20Speaker 1: maybe he would dip into the edge of that public
- 15:23Speaker 1: What would you do to try to determine that. Would
- 15:25Speaker 1: you just go and actually walk that piece of public
- 15:29Speaker 1: that's closest and look for incredible sign there or look
- 15:33Speaker 1: or put cameras there and just kind of hope that
- 15:35Speaker 1: maybe that happens to be or is there anything else
- 15:37Speaker 1: different you would do specifically to try to ascertain if
- 15:40Speaker 1: he's on public at all. Well, if if it's public,
- 15:44Speaker 1: I know, um, and near my home. A lot of
- 15:48Speaker 1: times it is, Um, I'll know the better areas and stuff,
- 15:52Speaker 1: and I might just throw some contet and anyways, no
- 15:53Speaker 1: one he's in the area, you know, Um, No, we're
- 15:57Speaker 1: mature books still want to go over there. Um. But
- 15:59Speaker 1: in a lot of key since it is trying to
- 16:01Speaker 1: catch him, see him crossing the road or going over
- 16:03Speaker 1: there or something. Um. In some cases I'll drop a camera. Um.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Usually if I'm dropping one at this time of the year,
- 16:11Speaker 1: it's to sell camp because if you're going and check
- 16:13Speaker 1: it in, you're you're blowing it. You know, you get
- 16:15Speaker 1: one crack getting there and dropped the camera and don't
- 16:18Speaker 1: go back. And then if he's coming across the main
- 16:20Speaker 1: crossing coming out of that property or something, hopefully you
- 16:22Speaker 1: can get a capture some sort of image of him
- 16:25Speaker 1: and a time frame. Um, but it's you know, it's
- 16:30Speaker 1: really trying to catch him going over there and knowing
- 16:33Speaker 1: that he's over there. I'm so you're not wasting your time.
- 16:36Speaker 1: But if he's that big, and I'm not, I'm not sure.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I mean a lot of guys listening right now probably
- 16:43Speaker 1: can't shine. There's only a few states where you can
- 16:46Speaker 1: and glass, and a lot of times those big bucks
- 16:48Speaker 1: don't come into open areas and daylight. So you gotta
- 16:51Speaker 1: throw a camera at it, or you gotta throw a
- 16:53Speaker 1: hunt at it and and just try. I mean, I
- 16:56Speaker 1: would rather throw a hunt at a possibility that might
- 17:00Speaker 1: be coming across the road over there, then to go
- 17:02Speaker 1: hunt and known one forty you know, so why not?
- 17:05Speaker 1: I mean, just throw some hunts at it, do you
- 17:07Speaker 1: worst thing can happen if you don't get a deer. Yeah. So,
- 17:10Speaker 1: I know some guys that have been in a situation
- 17:12Speaker 1: like this, and they'll they'll spot a deer somewhere like this,
- 17:16Speaker 1: and then they will look at a radius of like
- 17:19Speaker 1: a mile about and and try to get ahold of
- 17:21Speaker 1: every single landowner they possibly can within that mile and
- 17:24Speaker 1: see if they can get permission. Do you will you
- 17:27Speaker 1: ever ask that many people for permission? Or is it
- 17:30Speaker 1: more so like you find the best property and you're
- 17:33Speaker 1: willing to put in the time to try to get
- 17:34Speaker 1: permission there? Um, I guess how how much are you
- 17:38Speaker 1: willing to try to get access to private in that
- 17:40Speaker 1: kind of situation? And how do you do that? Usually?
- 17:43Speaker 1: I don't ask a lot of permission. Um. If I do,
- 17:46Speaker 1: it's because I'm seeing a right on a property. Um.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Most of my hunting is on public or it's on
- 17:51Speaker 1: somebody properly where I'm invited. Um. I don't usually ask,
- 17:55Speaker 1: but I do if I'm seeing one on it. But
- 17:57Speaker 1: I don't do that whole ask all to me burds
- 18:00Speaker 1: and all that stuff. Usually No, Okay, Okay, I have
- 18:03Speaker 1: to know that the bucks going over there before I
- 18:04Speaker 1: would even um put myself through that headache. I fail
- 18:09Speaker 1: you there, I agree with you there. Um Okay, let's
- 18:15Speaker 1: fast forward a little bit and maybe we just keep
- 18:18Speaker 1: on playing this scenario. Um, it's opening day in Wisconsin.
- 18:23Speaker 1: What septem yep? Okay, So it's the night before opening day,
- 18:28Speaker 1: so September, on a typical September evening, and maybe this
- 18:35Speaker 1: particular one with US world class deer somewhere. What are
- 18:39Speaker 1: you doing on the night before opening day? And why
- 18:43Speaker 1: and how are you doing it? Is it something I'm
- 18:45Speaker 1: assuming it's some kind of scouting or something, or do
- 18:47Speaker 1: you take the night off and prepare yourself for hunting season?
- 18:50Speaker 1: Or what do you do the night before? Um? Usually,
- 18:55Speaker 1: you know, if I was onto something really big and
- 18:57Speaker 1: I was seen him on a regular basis, I probably
- 18:59Speaker 1: go check common for sure, and I'd probably look around
- 19:03Speaker 1: and see if anybody else is watching or anything like that,
- 19:06Speaker 1: just kind of, you know, do a drive by. But really,
- 19:10Speaker 1: usually the day before hunting season, I'm kissing my old ladies,
- 19:14Speaker 1: I ask, because they're not gonna fear for four months.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Too happy with smart smart man. Maybe Thursday, I'm scouting
- 19:23Speaker 1: a little harder. That's smart. Okay. That might be the
- 19:28Speaker 1: best advice we get all night here. Um okay, So
- 19:34Speaker 1: let's I got one more kind of jumping off of that,
- 19:38Speaker 1: because a buddy of mine had a question that I
- 19:41Speaker 1: think relates to this. Let's let's keep with our hypothetical
- 19:47Speaker 1: and let's say that now you actually do have permission
- 19:52Speaker 1: on a property what this buck is living on? So
- 19:55Speaker 1: the properties about two acres of private land you were
- 19:58Speaker 1: invited to hunt it? My friend, it's a mixture of
- 20:02Speaker 1: farm grounds, some thick brush and the small swamp with
- 20:06Speaker 1: multiple quality betting locations scattered throughout, and there's this legit,
- 20:11Speaker 1: world class deer out there. How would your hunting style
- 20:15Speaker 1: once the season opened? How would your hunting style differ
- 20:19Speaker 1: if you were the only one who had access to
- 20:21Speaker 1: the farm versus if ten other guys also got invited.
- 20:25Speaker 1: So ten other guys are hunting the two acres with
- 20:28Speaker 1: you versus just you had access to it. How would
- 20:32Speaker 1: you hunt it differently as the season progressed? How would
- 20:35Speaker 1: your style change? You know, I don't think the pressure
- 20:39Speaker 1: makes a huge difference to me. Actually, Um, if the
- 20:43Speaker 1: deer actually lives there, I think the pressure helps me.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Not the pressure pushes the deer off the property. I
- 20:49Speaker 1: think it hurts me. But actual pressure in a spot
- 20:52Speaker 1: where I'm hunting, if it's not kicking the deer out
- 20:54Speaker 1: of there, I think helps me because I think it
- 20:56Speaker 1: makes a deer follow the rules. Um, you see deer
- 20:59Speaker 1: and unpressured areas where they they're bet a little easier,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and you know, um, up on higher ground a little
- 21:06Speaker 1: further out from where they normally do they get a
- 21:08Speaker 1: little laxed and you walk in to hunt some bednary
- 21:12Speaker 1: and kick them out fifty yards for you to the
- 21:14Speaker 1: bed in area were normally it would be satellite bucks.
- 21:17Speaker 1: So it actually it gets a little harder with no
- 21:19Speaker 1: pressure sometimes. But my my actual style of hunting probably
- 21:23Speaker 1: wouldn't change at all. I would still be very aggressive.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I don't think any boo gets to be two years old.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I mean by by uh, you know, running around in
- 21:34Speaker 1: daylight all over the place, not unpressured or private, you know. Um,
- 21:39Speaker 1: So for me, it's still a matter of inches getting
- 21:42Speaker 1: in close. And I would say there's other ten people, um,
- 21:45Speaker 1: if they're your average hunters, pretty much all of them
- 21:48Speaker 1: are probably hunting set stands, and they're just probably worried
- 21:51Speaker 1: about me hunting in their corner of the field or
- 21:54Speaker 1: something where I'm just gonna skirt around them and go
- 21:56Speaker 1: to the edges of those swamps and and really hit
- 21:59Speaker 1: the point going out there and stuff that's spot the
- 22:01Speaker 1: spots where a big buck should be betting. I'll be
- 22:04Speaker 1: looking for sign coming out, setting up and hunting, and
- 22:06Speaker 1: then the next day movement if I didn't see it,
- 22:09Speaker 1: and I'm gonna hunt that property down until I see
- 22:12Speaker 1: that buck. We'll get on. Now, would that be any
- 22:16Speaker 1: different at all if the hunting pressure wasn't on you
- 22:19Speaker 1: at all? But you did have this extreme pressure on
- 22:21Speaker 1: the outside. So let's say all the neighboring properties have
- 22:25Speaker 1: got a lot of pressure. But they're they're good hunters.
- 22:28Speaker 1: We're gonna say they're not just your average ho hum,
- 22:30Speaker 1: but they're actually they know what they're doing. They listen,
- 22:33Speaker 1: they're maybe they're members of the Hunting Beast. Maybe they've
- 22:36Speaker 1: listened to the wire Tump podcast. They know what to do.
- 22:39Speaker 1: At least they know what to do. I'm not saying
- 22:41Speaker 1: they do the right thing all the time, but at
- 22:42Speaker 1: least they know what to do, and they're hunting the
- 22:44Speaker 1: edges and they know about this buck too. In that case,
- 22:48Speaker 1: would you do the exact same thing or would you
- 22:51Speaker 1: be a little bit more conservative? Now, how would that
- 22:54Speaker 1: switch it up at all? Well? I would you don't?
- 23:00Speaker 1: I think I still hunt the same. Um. I think
- 23:02Speaker 1: you gotta you gotta get in there when I hunt.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I mean, everybody thinks it's so aggressive. They're going in,
- 23:08Speaker 1: you know, close to these bed and areas is really
- 23:09Speaker 1: super aggressive. I't remember I go in there once, I
- 23:12Speaker 1: slide out and then I move and I'm someplace else.
- 23:15Speaker 1: And I don't think I hunt those places overly aggressive.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Um for the most part, And in my eyes, um, yeah,
- 23:23Speaker 1: I think if you don't take a shot. I think
- 23:25Speaker 1: a lot of guys are so worried about kicking the
- 23:28Speaker 1: gear off of a property, but they never give him
- 23:31Speaker 1: a chance to kill it. You know, they sit back
- 23:33Speaker 1: too much. I really think that the aggressiveness is what
- 23:38Speaker 1: gets me the action, and it's whether there's other hunters
- 23:41Speaker 1: or not surrounding that property. Um. You know that dear me,
- 23:47Speaker 1: pushing it off on another property could mean somebody else
- 23:50Speaker 1: kills that. I've had that happened to me. But I've
- 23:53Speaker 1: also gone and killed deer, and I think it's worth
- 23:56Speaker 1: the risk because I think if you don't go in
- 23:58Speaker 1: there and spoke a field deer or have a neighbor
- 24:00Speaker 1: killed one on here or something, you're probably not hunting
- 24:03Speaker 1: hard enough. Um, sitting back too much, you know, it's
- 24:07Speaker 1: a catch twenty two. I've been on like really well
- 24:11Speaker 1: managed ranches and and Seymour. You know, big bucks move
- 24:16Speaker 1: around daylight pretty easy. But for the most part, most
- 24:23Speaker 1: of the stuff that most of your average listeners have.
- 24:27Speaker 1: If they don't get aggressive, they're never gonna be a chance.
- 24:29Speaker 1: And they'll see you guys on TV that are on
- 24:31Speaker 1: this big ranches sitting back on field edges and stuff.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And it's not too often in the areas where I
- 24:37Speaker 1: hunt you see a big buck on the field that
- 24:39Speaker 1: I mean, it happens, but not too often. If you do,
- 24:42Speaker 1: it's usually a younger buck that's got a bigger rack.
- 24:45Speaker 1: The mature bucks just don't come out like that. You know, Um,
- 24:49Speaker 1: you gotta get aggressive. You've gotta go in your after him.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Most of the huge bucks that I've killed, i've killed within,
- 24:55Speaker 1: you know, within a hundred fifty two hundred yards of
- 24:58Speaker 1: the veinry most of the time close her and I'm
- 25:01Speaker 1: shooting them at closing time. So I mean, if you're
- 25:04Speaker 1: kicking too far back because you're afraid of kicking them
- 25:06Speaker 1: on the neighbors, you're just not gonna see that deer.
- 25:09Speaker 1: And I think you're putting you're still putting the pressure on.
- 25:12Speaker 1: If you're back, you know, four yards, the buck's gonna
- 25:14Speaker 1: get out there, smell that you're there, and obviously gonna
- 25:17Speaker 1: come out even later, he's gonna come out smarter. It's
- 25:20Speaker 1: the you know, um, it's like slapping him on the
- 25:22Speaker 1: ass and saying, game on, I'm hunting you. I want
- 25:25Speaker 1: the first time that he has an opportunity to smell
- 25:27Speaker 1: me if he comes out of that bed, n he
- 25:29Speaker 1: gets an arrow through him. So does that make right away? Yeah,
- 25:33Speaker 1: so that kind of makes me wonder though, right. I
- 25:36Speaker 1: think you've talked about sometimes like hunting your way in,
- 25:40Speaker 1: you know, is you you'll you'll try and get close
- 25:42Speaker 1: and then maybe you spot them or you learn something
- 25:44Speaker 1: and you move in sixty or sixty yards closer or
- 25:47Speaker 1: something like that. Is is there sometimes the time when
- 25:50Speaker 1: you should actually just go all the way for the
- 25:52Speaker 1: home run, go right to the edge because you know
- 25:54Speaker 1: that you know, like you just said it, man, it
- 25:58Speaker 1: matters what you have for intel. You know. Um, there's
- 26:02Speaker 1: spots where I'm unsure of something. I try to find
- 26:06Speaker 1: a situation where I can sit back where I don't
- 26:08Speaker 1: think that deer is gonna get to where I am.
- 26:09Speaker 1: It's not gonna smell where I was, The wind is
- 26:11Speaker 1: gonna be right where I can watch an area, see
- 26:14Speaker 1: what happens, and then moving for a kill if I
- 26:16Speaker 1: need to, um and I've had, you know, and like,
- 26:20Speaker 1: if I'm hunting a spot that you know, I'm really
- 26:23Speaker 1: unsure of kinda but I got a planned area I'm hunting.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I never walk that trail. I don't take that you know,
- 26:29Speaker 1: path that cut path from point to point B. I
- 26:32Speaker 1: always plan out a route and try to scout my
- 26:36Speaker 1: way in and find fast sign. You find first sign
- 26:38Speaker 1: coming out of something that looks like betting, and I'll
- 26:40Speaker 1: set right up on it. And uh, I've done okay
- 26:43Speaker 1: doing that. A lot of times. I don't make it
- 26:44Speaker 1: to where I was planning on going. Um, but I'm
- 26:49Speaker 1: still you know, hunting that aggressive making my way in there,
- 26:53Speaker 1: you know, in that whole hunch your way in thing.
- 26:56Speaker 1: What I mean by that is is don't walk through
- 26:59Speaker 1: a bed and area to hunt a betterary you think
- 27:01Speaker 1: might be a little bit better. You might want to
- 27:03Speaker 1: hunt point eight before you walk walk past it and
- 27:06Speaker 1: ruin it, you know what I mean. Yeah, that's part
- 27:09Speaker 1: of that hunting your way in thing. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Kind of related to all this. I've heard you talking, uh,
- 27:17Speaker 1: you know about people that maybe own a small farm
- 27:19Speaker 1: and how there's this temptation. I think you could probably
- 27:24Speaker 1: say this temptation that you want to hunt it as
- 27:27Speaker 1: often as you can or whenever you have the chance
- 27:29Speaker 1: to hunt it, you should hunt it because you've got
- 27:31Speaker 1: all this money dumped into it, right you bought this farm,
- 27:33Speaker 1: You've put it all this time and effort. You want
- 27:35Speaker 1: to enjoy it, so you want to do it. But
- 27:39Speaker 1: your your recommendation in this I think it was one
- 27:41Speaker 1: of your videos I was watching, you said, hey, why
- 27:44Speaker 1: don't you go throw some hunts at the public land
- 27:46Speaker 1: and just hunt your private sparingly at the right times,
- 27:50Speaker 1: with the right conditions, and then you'll actually get more
- 27:52Speaker 1: out of that hunt than you would otherwise with fifteen hunts.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Um and so you talked about, you know, scattering your
- 27:59Speaker 1: hunts from public other properties, and I know that with
- 28:02Speaker 1: your own personal hunting you bounced to a lot of
- 28:04Speaker 1: different places as you just it is described. You'll you'll
- 28:06Speaker 1: be aggressive, but it's a one time in maybe and
- 28:09Speaker 1: then off to another place. Would you or I guess,
- 28:14Speaker 1: let me say this, what would it look like for
- 28:17Speaker 1: you though, if you happen to become one of these
- 28:19Speaker 1: people I just described. Let's say someone let's say we've
- 28:24Speaker 1: got a listener or know we've got a viewer of
- 28:26Speaker 1: the Hunting Beast YouTube channel, and you've been so helpful
- 28:29Speaker 1: to him that he decides he's gonna give you a
- 28:31Speaker 1: sixty acre piece of ground as a thank you gift.
- 28:34Speaker 1: He gives you sixty acres of prime ground. Dan. Now
- 28:38Speaker 1: you are a private property owner and you also have
- 28:41Speaker 1: all the public land you can hunt two. How would
- 28:43Speaker 1: you personally mix that into your schedule? Would you say, well,
- 28:48Speaker 1: I got that sixty acre piece now, um? Would you
- 28:50Speaker 1: do things differently? Or would you still just hunting your
- 28:52Speaker 1: own personal piece of property a couple of times a
- 28:55Speaker 1: year and spend the rest of it everywhere else? How
- 28:57Speaker 1: would you? How would you do that? How would you
- 28:59Speaker 1: figure that? Well? I kind of have that scenario. I
- 29:04Speaker 1: think the property seventy acres, not sixty, but I don't
- 29:07Speaker 1: own it. A good friend owns it, and only me
- 29:11Speaker 1: and him hunted. UM. But it's not primary acres either.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I mean the whole surrounding area around is really heavy pressured,
- 29:18Speaker 1: so it's it's harder hunting. But it is private and
- 29:20Speaker 1: you know nobody's been in there. And how I hunt
- 29:23Speaker 1: that different is that we have observation stands here and
- 29:29Speaker 1: we watch UM open areas that are adjacent to betting
- 29:34Speaker 1: from a distance, and we see something, we'll move in
- 29:36Speaker 1: for the kill UM and me and him. You usually
- 29:39Speaker 1: do it as a team. If we see something, we
- 29:41Speaker 1: both go into the next day to kill it. But
- 29:45Speaker 1: UM we try to hunt that um uh once a week,
- 29:52Speaker 1: which I think is way too much. But but the
- 29:55Speaker 1: guy who wants probably that the hunt was UM is
- 29:59Speaker 1: a key answer survivor, and he doesn't. He doesn't have
- 30:02Speaker 1: the energy anymore. He used to when he's younger, go
- 30:04Speaker 1: out to the public with me and stuff. So that's
- 30:06Speaker 1: all the apps. So so we hunted a little overhunting
- 30:10Speaker 1: by hunting it once a week. UM. But those hunts
- 30:14Speaker 1: are including sitting back on those observations stands watching UM.
- 30:20Speaker 1: And that might sound you know, fruitless. You know, you
- 30:23Speaker 1: put a food plot there and maybe get lucky and
- 30:25Speaker 1: sometimes it wanders by, But we're really trying to get
- 30:28Speaker 1: eyes on a on a big one. What's interesting about
- 30:30Speaker 1: that is that seventy acres um as you'd imagine I've
- 30:34Speaker 1: been hunting there for about I don't know years with
- 30:40Speaker 1: him and uh as you'd imagine it's really open terrain,
- 30:45Speaker 1: so all the prime spots have stands in him by
- 30:47Speaker 1: now right. But yet every time we kill something big,
- 30:51Speaker 1: which is very often, but when we do, it's from
- 30:56Speaker 1: an aggressive move when we see something to move to it.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Those big box I mean, if they've lived on that farm,
- 31:03Speaker 1: they've gone past you when they're they're you know, one,
- 31:05Speaker 1: two or three, and they've they've learned where the stands
- 31:09Speaker 1: already smelled where you walk and stuff. And now now
- 31:12Speaker 1: they're mature and they walk through there and avoid the stands.
- 31:15Speaker 1: I mean, you go intro in wintertime and look at
- 31:16Speaker 1: the tracks and what shall they just go through the
- 31:17Speaker 1: woods and never go by a guy's tree stand. But
- 31:21Speaker 1: what I do is I mix it up a lot,
- 31:23Speaker 1: and I'm always, um looking at the public. I'm always
- 31:25Speaker 1: looking at the adventures, trips and stuff, go and trying
- 31:27Speaker 1: something new, and to me, um, I really love challenges,
- 31:31Speaker 1: going to new places. And it really isn't about killing
- 31:34Speaker 1: buck anymore. It's more about you know, testing yourself and
- 31:37Speaker 1: testing what you can do and which you can accomplish. Um.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And I think what a big thing a lot of
- 31:44Speaker 1: people are missing if they're so worried about their their
- 31:48Speaker 1: success and being somebody in the hunting industry, Because now
- 31:51Speaker 1: it's all about who you are in the hunting industry.
- 31:53Speaker 1: You know, it's no longer about your personal goals, it seems,
- 31:56Speaker 1: which is sad. But if you get out of that,
- 32:00Speaker 1: you can invest in yourself. Hunting on the public land
- 32:04Speaker 1: along with your farm, makes you grow. You don't grow
- 32:07Speaker 1: by hunting the same stuff. You know, you don't grow
- 32:09Speaker 1: by going to the same tree stand in the back.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I mean, I've I've listened to people tell me how
- 32:15Speaker 1: great they are as you have to, I know, and
- 32:20Speaker 1: you listen to them talk and they're telling you how
- 32:22Speaker 1: they they got this farm that the hunt on, that
- 32:25Speaker 1: the hunter acres that your dad owns, and they're so
- 32:28Speaker 1: great because they killed all these books. Well, it's the
- 32:29Speaker 1: same spot. What are you gonna do? And now you
- 32:32Speaker 1: get off that flat land, your hunt hill land? What
- 32:34Speaker 1: you canna do when you go find a swamp? You know,
- 32:37Speaker 1: um testing yourself and putting yourself in new scenarios. When
- 32:40Speaker 1: you when you learn how dear go through a swamp,
- 32:43Speaker 1: you learn a few things about your farm too. You
- 32:46Speaker 1: learn how they go through hills. You learn a few
- 32:48Speaker 1: things about your farm too. And every time you try
- 32:51Speaker 1: something new, you learn something new. Either that or you're blind.
- 32:55Speaker 1: You know, there are people that go out there and
- 32:57Speaker 1: they you know, they'll come back and they'll tell you
- 32:59Speaker 1: they saw a big buck. You'll be like, oh, really,
- 33:01Speaker 1: you know, where was it? Well? I was over there.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Well we're on the transition, or I don't know, it's
- 33:06Speaker 1: about hundred yards over there. What was the wind doing?
- 33:09Speaker 1: Oh I don't know. You know where I'm I'm getting
- 33:11Speaker 1: there going? What's the window? Why is that deer there?
- 33:13Speaker 1: You know? What? Where is he coming from? Where's he going?
- 33:16Speaker 1: Some people just see deer? You know. I think asking
- 33:20Speaker 1: those questions all the time and really stretching yourself out
- 33:22Speaker 1: and trying new things, trying new properties. Um, you know,
- 33:27Speaker 1: if you if you kill your buck on your farm,
- 33:30Speaker 1: why quit hunting? I mean, go to another state, try
- 33:33Speaker 1: some new places, try some new spots. You know. Yeah,
- 33:36Speaker 1: I couldn't agree with you more that Just simply putting
- 33:39Speaker 1: yourself in new situations and and then trying to figure
- 33:42Speaker 1: it out and asking why that is you could you
- 33:46Speaker 1: could accomplish a whole lot if you just kept doing that.
- 33:48Speaker 1: You don't need to listen to this podcast. You can
- 33:50Speaker 1: learn a whole lot just by doing that. Um, that's good. Stuff. Um,
- 33:56Speaker 1: something you mentioned there made me think of of another
- 34:01Speaker 1: aspect of of what you do. That's that's pretty interesting
- 34:04Speaker 1: to me. And I think that's your some of your
- 34:06Speaker 1: decision making process. I'm always interested in trying to kind
- 34:11Speaker 1: of look into that a little bit further. And and
- 34:15Speaker 1: I guess I'll give you this example scenario and then
- 34:18Speaker 1: maybe you can try to help talk through what your
- 34:21Speaker 1: decision making processes to help me understand it. Let's say
- 34:25Speaker 1: it's it's opening night in Michigan, October one, and you
- 34:30Speaker 1: have to decide between your different possible places to hunt
- 34:35Speaker 1: on opening day in Michigan. Um, I'm gonna lay it
- 34:39Speaker 1: out for you and just say that there's there's a
- 34:42Speaker 1: public land piece where you found a great bedding area
- 34:45Speaker 1: on some high ground and swamp. There's another piece of
- 34:48Speaker 1: public land in the same general area where you found
- 34:52Speaker 1: some loan white oaks on the edge of a swamp
- 34:56Speaker 1: that are dropped and that seems pretty good. And you know,
- 35:01Speaker 1: maybe then maybe that's all you know about and the
- 35:02Speaker 1: rest is up in the air, But maybe that part
- 35:05Speaker 1: isn't as as important as just the larger question, which
- 35:09Speaker 1: it's October one, the first day of the season, how
- 35:13Speaker 1: would you determine what is the best option to hunting
- 35:17Speaker 1: without prior information Where I say, you don't have trail cameras,
- 35:19Speaker 1: this is not your home turf, this is a new area,
- 35:22Speaker 1: but you have a little bit information. How would you
- 35:24Speaker 1: go through thinking through Okay, all the different variables. There's
- 35:28Speaker 1: there's wind, there's access, there's hunting pressure, there's the information
- 35:32Speaker 1: about these two locations and anything else you might know about.
- 35:35Speaker 1: I'm just kind of curious what kind of the what's
- 35:38Speaker 1: going on in your mind is just sitting in the
- 35:40Speaker 1: truck the night before or that morning and decided, Okay,
- 35:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna go to Place A or Place B or
- 35:46Speaker 1: something else. Can you talk me through that? I think
- 35:50Speaker 1: if if I didn't know of any of the box
- 35:53Speaker 1: in the area, and I was going out there and hunting,
- 35:57Speaker 1: kind of in a scenario you're talking, I would probably
- 36:01Speaker 1: look at a a property and I'd try to figure
- 36:04Speaker 1: out based on the wind, where I think they would
- 36:07Speaker 1: be betting and if acorns are dropping. I would probably
- 36:11Speaker 1: in its early season open day, I'd probably be looking
- 36:15Speaker 1: for something around oaks. I'd probably looking for isolated oaks. Um.
- 36:20Speaker 1: You're a thick cover um, especially most of Michigan. I
- 36:25Speaker 1: think i'd be looking for betting isolated by water in Michigan,
- 36:31Speaker 1: um uh and fixed stuff, so that water isolated betting
- 36:37Speaker 1: is not gonna have oak trees because oaks don't grow
- 36:39Speaker 1: that low. They're gonna come up to the oak trees
- 36:42Speaker 1: and eat, and they've been doing it, you know, prior
- 36:46Speaker 1: to season before people are out there. I'm gonna walk
- 36:49Speaker 1: those transition lines um between the oak trees and swamps,
- 36:54Speaker 1: and I'm gonna look for sign coming out. I'm gonna
- 36:57Speaker 1: try and look for a wind that kind blows in
- 37:00Speaker 1: the buck's favor, the quartering into it, so that when
- 37:04Speaker 1: I hit the trail, the wind ain't quite hitting that
- 37:06Speaker 1: buck yet. And the reason I'm gonna do that is
- 37:08Speaker 1: because the wind's blown from the swamp most of the time.
- 37:10Speaker 1: To bed right on the edge of the swamp and
- 37:12Speaker 1: look at the oak trees. When it's blown in, they
- 37:15Speaker 1: bed in further and smell the approaching danger. That's been
- 37:19Speaker 1: my experience with them. So because they like to look
- 37:22Speaker 1: down wind and um, I'll follow that transition until I
- 37:27Speaker 1: find the sign coming out. That sign might be really
- 37:31Speaker 1: heavy brows on the acorns, for everything's torn up and
- 37:34Speaker 1: it might be some um rubs, and it might be
- 37:38Speaker 1: a combination of rubs and in Toro up acorns and leaves. UM,
- 37:45Speaker 1: hopefully you got a combination of those. Sometimes the rubs
- 37:48Speaker 1: are hard to see at that time time front of
- 37:50Speaker 1: the year, but just see little marks in the trees,
- 37:53Speaker 1: or maybe there'll be a scrape or two even though
- 37:54Speaker 1: it's early, because they're marking, because multiple bucks are coming in,
- 37:57Speaker 1: they're sort of kind of claiming the area. So I
- 38:00Speaker 1: look for some sort of sign like that. And if
- 38:03Speaker 1: I'm on a travel trip, UM, and you know, or
- 38:08Speaker 1: I'm there for the weekend, I might scout a large
- 38:12Speaker 1: area and walk right through signed that. I might walk
- 38:14Speaker 1: through sign and say, who this might be a good spot,
- 38:19Speaker 1: and walk right through and keep going and start out
- 38:22Speaker 1: my scouting early, like ten in the morning, and then
- 38:27Speaker 1: by two in the afternoon, pick which spot was the best,
- 38:30Speaker 1: and go back and hunted, and then repeat the next day. UM.
- 38:35Speaker 1: That way, you're getting onto the to the best sign
- 38:38Speaker 1: that you found, you know, uh fastest. Now, in one
- 38:43Speaker 1: of those scenarios, I think, I think I know what
- 38:45Speaker 1: you would do. But you you find this, you go
- 38:49Speaker 1: in there doing the scouting. You you come up on
- 38:51Speaker 1: some dynamite sign and what you think is like the bedroom,
- 38:55Speaker 1: you're right there at the bedroom or right in the
- 38:57Speaker 1: edge of it, and you see the sign, Um, look dynamite.
- 39:00Speaker 1: But you pass boot tracks relatively fresh, not saying that
- 39:05Speaker 1: came in that morning, but relatively fresh boot tracks. So
- 39:08Speaker 1: there has been somebody back here. But at the same time,
- 39:11Speaker 1: you're thinking, man, but I'm in the bedroom. Do you
- 39:13Speaker 1: cross that off the list completely because of that pressure
- 39:16Speaker 1: or do you think that you could still maybe get
- 39:18Speaker 1: away with a hunt um given the fact that you're
- 39:21Speaker 1: you're right there, What what would your thoughts be there?
- 39:25Speaker 1: I would probably keep going. I don't think I would
- 39:27Speaker 1: stop if somebody's already hunted there. If I thought those
- 39:30Speaker 1: tracks were from a day or two before. I think
- 39:36Speaker 1: if anything um or shooting came out and ran across
- 39:39Speaker 1: those tracks, it's it's altered its path. Yeah, Okay, that's
- 39:45Speaker 1: that's what I figured. I want to I want to
- 39:48Speaker 1: back out a little bit and switch the scenario, switch
- 39:52Speaker 1: up our habitat a little bit um because I know
- 39:55Speaker 1: in past podcast we've talked a lot about um Marsh
- 39:59Speaker 1: country type stuff. I know we talked a lot about
- 40:01Speaker 1: your hill country type stuff. Um, but I want to
- 40:03Speaker 1: talk a little bit about kind of generic farmland. Yeah,
- 40:08Speaker 1: it's it's something that I know is pretty easy for
- 40:10Speaker 1: you when it comes to marsh or swamp or hill
- 40:13Speaker 1: country to pick out where buck probably is betted. Right,
- 40:16Speaker 1: there's certain terrain features in hill country where you think
- 40:19Speaker 1: that's probably gonna be the best spot there should be
- 40:21Speaker 1: bucks betting there. And then when it comes to swamps
- 40:23Speaker 1: or marshes, there's certain terrain features those islands, those points
- 40:26Speaker 1: where you can say, oh, there's a pretty good chance
- 40:27Speaker 1: that could be bucks there. Um, it seems like it's
- 40:31Speaker 1: a little bit harder to do that with farmland. I'm curious.
- 40:35Speaker 1: So let's say we've were in Michigan again. We'll keep
- 40:38Speaker 1: keep rolling with that. You're dropped off now, and we've
- 40:42Speaker 1: got a random flat set of farm ground and I
- 40:46Speaker 1: told you you're gonna hunt it today, but you've never
- 40:49Speaker 1: seen it before. We don't have a marsh, we don't
- 40:52Speaker 1: have big hills, we don't have a swamp. It's just
- 40:54Speaker 1: kind of scattered timber and crops, some brushy stuff. And
- 40:58Speaker 1: what I'm curious first about is could you pick out
- 41:03Speaker 1: the betting areas of buck buck betting ears from a map, like,
- 41:07Speaker 1: do you think you could do that with some kind
- 41:08Speaker 1: of degree of confidence without those big obvious terrain features,
- 41:12Speaker 1: And if so, could you walk me through what you
- 41:14Speaker 1: would be looking for on that flat farmland and how
- 41:17Speaker 1: you go about picking the spots. What I look for
- 41:21Speaker 1: on a flat farmland is I do not expect bucks
- 41:25Speaker 1: to be bedding in the middle of wood lucks, which
- 41:29Speaker 1: is what everybody else seems to expect. I think bucks
- 41:32Speaker 1: are more edge creatures, and you're gonna find your mature
- 41:36Speaker 1: books on tree lines where you can see across fields.
- 41:39Speaker 1: You're gonna see them in little patches off to the side. Um. Really,
- 41:43Speaker 1: really often on farms, everybody that hunts and has the
- 41:47Speaker 1: same access in parts in the same spot, walks on
- 41:49Speaker 1: the same path back into the farm the same way.
- 41:52Speaker 1: And I find the mature bucks often have a betting
- 41:56Speaker 1: spot that overlooks watching that access. UM. And then you
- 42:01Speaker 1: have to mix it up and how you come in. UM.
- 42:05Speaker 1: When they do bed in square like wood lot rains,
- 42:10Speaker 1: there's two ways they bed. One of them is that
- 42:13Speaker 1: they bed on the outside edge whichever whichever edges down wind.
- 42:19Speaker 1: They smell the woods behind them, and they watched the
- 42:21Speaker 1: fields in front of them. Um. The other one is
- 42:23Speaker 1: to get into the inside of that woods to an
- 42:26Speaker 1: opening or a low spot where it's a little letter marshy,
- 42:31Speaker 1: get on the edges of that um m hmm. But
- 42:37Speaker 1: typically um, it's the tree lines sort of stuff off
- 42:41Speaker 1: to the side where I find the biggest stuff. So
- 42:44Speaker 1: that can be hard to hunt and it can be
- 42:45Speaker 1: hard to predict. But another thing that's really really important
- 42:51Speaker 1: with flat farmland is nothing is really perfectly flat, and
- 42:57Speaker 1: I find that a little bit of elevation change makes
- 42:59Speaker 1: a much difference and what you'd call flat farms, I
- 43:04Speaker 1: find the best betting is usually at the lowest point
- 43:07Speaker 1: in the highest point on the farm. Interesting, and if
- 43:13Speaker 1: if then you had a spot like this, and we're
- 43:18Speaker 1: predicting that there's gonna be some betting near those edges
- 43:21Speaker 1: probably and these bucks are going to try to watch
- 43:24Speaker 1: those openings. What if it's uh, what if it's one
- 43:29Speaker 1: of those farms that is impossible to access without coming
- 43:33Speaker 1: across that open field, like it's it's a big farm
- 43:36Speaker 1: field near the road, and then the back half of
- 43:39Speaker 1: the farm is the timber and you don't have access
- 43:43Speaker 1: to the backset. So the only way you can access
- 43:45Speaker 1: it is across the field. Um do you just get
- 43:50Speaker 1: as far away from the sexual I don't know. How
- 43:52Speaker 1: do you? How would you try to deal with that
- 43:53Speaker 1: scenario where you know that, Hey, there's that scenario where
- 43:57Speaker 1: I know that there's bucks watching, you know, get the
- 44:00Speaker 1: wind to their back, watching the farmhouse and there's no
- 44:06Speaker 1: other way in there because it's all open field on
- 44:08Speaker 1: that side. And what I've done is try walking past
- 44:11Speaker 1: them like may believe you don't know they're there, and
- 44:15Speaker 1: it's circling around someplace else to hunt them, like doing
- 44:17Speaker 1: a big j hooker on the farm to come through
- 44:20Speaker 1: cover to get back to them. Um. Another thing is
- 44:23Speaker 1: a lot of times when they bed watching the farm,
- 44:26Speaker 1: they are watching the access route they bed there. If
- 44:30Speaker 1: they're watching that route, they get the wind to their back.
- 44:33Speaker 1: They have the wind to the back, they're smelling behind them,
- 44:35Speaker 1: and they're watching with their eyes the trail. So when
- 44:40Speaker 1: the wind changes, they can't bed like that. They're not
- 44:43Speaker 1: going to bed facing the wind, you know, watching for
- 44:46Speaker 1: you and smelling for you, because then something could come
- 44:48Speaker 1: up from behind them and get them. It's all about safety.
- 44:51Speaker 1: So they bet with the wind that they're back. So
- 44:53Speaker 1: when you're access and they're watching you. So if those
- 44:55Speaker 1: beds are close to one edge or something, you can
- 44:58Speaker 1: just wait till the winds different, you know, to access.
- 45:01Speaker 1: Like like when I said that they bet on the
- 45:02Speaker 1: down one side of a wood lot. You seet time
- 45:06Speaker 1: and time again. Guys will get camera pictures over and
- 45:08Speaker 1: over and over these bucks in the field. They're like,
- 45:10Speaker 1: every time I hunt there, they don't come out. Well, yeah,
- 45:12Speaker 1: they're sitting on the edge watching you, and you wait
- 45:14Speaker 1: for the window in your face, which is when they're
- 45:17Speaker 1: betting on the edge watching the field. You know, go
- 45:21Speaker 1: hunt there when they're betting on the other side of
- 45:23Speaker 1: the wood lot, and then they're gonna come over there.
- 45:25Speaker 1: You know. Yeah, that's uh, that's the catch twenty two.
- 45:29Speaker 1: When you want to be safe about the wind right now,
- 45:33Speaker 1: speaking of wind um, you know, historically from everything I
- 45:38Speaker 1: remember us ever talking about in other things, you've typically
- 45:42Speaker 1: put all your cards or most of them at least
- 45:45Speaker 1: in playing the wind, not worrying too much about sink
- 45:48Speaker 1: control and just saying, hey, yeah, you can't beat the
- 45:50Speaker 1: bucks nose, see Mizel, just focused on the thing you
- 45:53Speaker 1: can to some degree control, which is being in the
- 45:57Speaker 1: right place in relation to wind. Uh. Um, I guess
- 46:01Speaker 1: question number one this isn't the scenario is right? The
- 46:03Speaker 1: question question number one is that still true to this
- 46:06Speaker 1: date or is that evolved it all over the last
- 46:08Speaker 1: five years or so? Um? And then question number two
- 46:12Speaker 1: then would be you heading for a hunt, and let's
- 46:16Speaker 1: say it's in one of these scenarios that we're talking
- 46:19Speaker 1: about where it's farmland flat and you went in with
- 46:23Speaker 1: a certain window actually you felt confident with. But then
- 46:26Speaker 1: in the last hour hour and a half a day
- 46:28Speaker 1: light or still let's say sneaping hunt, last hour, hour
- 46:31Speaker 1: and a half a daylight, that wind dies down and
- 46:34Speaker 1: all of a sudden, your sense doing wonky things. You
- 46:37Speaker 1: put your milky out there and sometimes it's going to
- 46:39Speaker 1: the north and sometimes it drops down, goes to the
- 46:42Speaker 1: south and you're getting some weird stuff going on there.
- 46:45Speaker 1: What would you do in that scenario? So question number
- 46:47Speaker 1: one is is your thinking changed it all on side control?
- 46:50Speaker 1: Question number two is that scenario? So the question number one, UM,
- 46:55Speaker 1: I still believe there's no way you're fooling the DearS. No,
- 46:58Speaker 1: I don't think you can do it. I think if
- 47:01Speaker 1: they smell your ground something, you know, how long ago
- 47:02Speaker 1: you're there, they smell your something to work exactly where
- 47:05Speaker 1: you're at. Um. I do believe some dear ignore you,
- 47:08Speaker 1: and I've had that. I've had a deer with my
- 47:09Speaker 1: wind blowing right at him and I know I stink
- 47:12Speaker 1: and they just don't care. No padam where they get
- 47:15Speaker 1: the first whiffle you blow out of there? But my
- 47:20Speaker 1: my attitude and that has never changed. Um okay, Well
- 47:25Speaker 1: number two. Number two was that last hour, hour and
- 47:28Speaker 1: a half a daylight, the wind dies down and all
- 47:30Speaker 1: of a sudden, you're wind kind of starts swirling. Now
- 47:33Speaker 1: it's not doing what you thought. So your whole game
- 47:35Speaker 1: plan was based off of this certain wind direction. But
- 47:38Speaker 1: now the wind dies and it's swirling. Do you do
- 47:42Speaker 1: you stick it out for the last hour, hour and
- 47:44Speaker 1: a half or do you bail completely? Here's how that
- 47:47Speaker 1: works with me. I mean there was a time when
- 47:48Speaker 1: I would bail out of there, and my might change.
- 47:52Speaker 1: My thinking has changed. Um, probably like ten years ago
- 47:56Speaker 1: or so, it started to change. And it's got to
- 47:59Speaker 1: the point now where I feel like, once I'm in
- 48:02Speaker 1: there and I've gotten my sent in there, I was
- 48:04Speaker 1: there for a reason, I might as well as just stay.
- 48:06Speaker 1: And I've had plenty of times when the winds blown
- 48:08Speaker 1: right out of here and you kill them. Anyways, I
- 48:10Speaker 1: would never set up in that scenario. But once you're there,
- 48:13Speaker 1: what the heck, your scents already in there, you've already
- 48:16Speaker 1: burned the area. You might as well sit there. And
- 48:19Speaker 1: there's been plenty of times where that has paid off
- 48:22Speaker 1: from me. Where you're are, it just goes over them
- 48:25Speaker 1: or something, you know, um in a lot of cases
- 48:28Speaker 1: for people, though, there's a reason for that stuff. And
- 48:30Speaker 1: that doesn't happen to me as much as other people
- 48:32Speaker 1: because I look at the terrain before I set up,
- 48:34Speaker 1: and I try to set up not into trains that
- 48:38Speaker 1: are gonna cause swirling or or you're gonna get thermal poles.
- 48:42Speaker 1: There's a lot of guys that think that think a
- 48:44Speaker 1: deer has a sixth sense, because right before dark, the
- 48:47Speaker 1: wind's been in your face all day. That deer comes from,
- 48:50Speaker 1: you know, up wind, and all of a sudden it's freezes,
- 48:53Speaker 1: locks and turns around, runs off and you're like, oh
- 48:56Speaker 1: my god, that that deer knew I was here somehow,
- 48:59Speaker 1: and only it smelled you. And if you use the
- 49:02Speaker 1: milk weed, you'll see that your thermals change, you know,
- 49:05Speaker 1: at the com spots. But if you've got any kind
- 49:08Speaker 1: of downward slope, if you're hunting a pillow of the deer,
- 49:11Speaker 1: as soon as the sun goes down or before the
- 49:13Speaker 1: sun goes up, every time it's calm, your scent is
- 49:16Speaker 1: gonna pulled on that hill. It could be just like
- 49:18Speaker 1: pouring water in that hill, and you might not even
- 49:21Speaker 1: feel it. If it's just rolling hills or you know,
- 49:24Speaker 1: you know, just slight elevation changes, you probably won't even
- 49:28Speaker 1: feel it, but you'd see it if you use milk weed. Now,
- 49:33Speaker 1: another scenario I've heard you talk about there being a
- 49:35Speaker 1: thermal impact is when you're by water, but I don't
- 49:38Speaker 1: think that's something we've covered in the podcast. Is that
- 49:40Speaker 1: could you elaborate a little bit how how a water
- 49:43Speaker 1: scenario could cause a thermal pull because I'm envisioning like
- 49:46Speaker 1: a you're in a swamp, there's a lot of standing water.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Maybe you're right in the edge of a little piece
- 49:51Speaker 1: of high ground and it's water everywhere else. What would
- 49:54Speaker 1: happen in that scenario or something like it? So it's
- 49:57Speaker 1: got to be like stagnant shallow water that's you know
- 50:01Speaker 1: a lot of times it's on black mud or whatever.
- 50:03Speaker 1: When that water gets warm, like swamp water or like
- 50:06Speaker 1: a real shallow pond, when it gets warm, because like
- 50:11Speaker 1: bathtub water, the sun goes down, the water stays warm,
- 50:14Speaker 1: but the air cools, so right above that pond or
- 50:19Speaker 1: or that water source of that swamp, that air will
- 50:22Speaker 1: just go straight up. And when it does that, it
- 50:24Speaker 1: displaces the air above the water, so pulls wall air
- 50:28Speaker 1: in from the sides, and that cooler air heats as
- 50:33Speaker 1: it goes over the water and then rises and just
- 50:35Speaker 1: pulls more in, so it changes the um the air
- 50:38Speaker 1: current with that thermal pull. And you usually you know,
- 50:41Speaker 1: that's another one where you have a hard time feeling it,
- 50:44Speaker 1: but if you check it, you'll see it. You see
- 50:46Speaker 1: your milk. We float over there, float float over the water,
- 50:48Speaker 1: and then shoot straight up. So what I try to
- 50:50Speaker 1: do is if I go hunt the point or something,
- 50:53Speaker 1: is I try to set myself up right up against
- 50:55Speaker 1: the water. Um sort of my scent pulls that way
- 50:58Speaker 1: and up rather than being up from the like if
- 51:02Speaker 1: being the center and the deer goes between you and
- 51:04Speaker 1: the water, you sent pulls to the deer, you know,
- 51:07Speaker 1: so I try to get right up against the water
- 51:09Speaker 1: where I can predict for them where the thermal will be.
- 51:13Speaker 1: It's interesting, this fits in perfectly with the question that
- 51:17Speaker 1: a listener sent in a scenario. Um, but this rather
- 51:20Speaker 1: than a stagnant water, this is moving water. And so
- 51:23Speaker 1: we're talking a river. And so let's let's apply what
- 51:26Speaker 1: you just described to a little bit more specific situation here.
- 51:30Speaker 1: It's late October, let's say October, and you've located a
- 51:34Speaker 1: piece of public land that's got this floodplain river bottom,
- 51:38Speaker 1: and it's being used for kind of everything. It's being
- 51:41Speaker 1: used for bedding and travel, and some food sources in there.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Maybe I don't know, maybe there's an oak tree or
- 51:46Speaker 1: something that's dropping. But then there's these ridges that lead
- 51:50Speaker 1: up out of the river bottom up to private land
- 51:53Speaker 1: crop fields up high. Could you describe how you would
- 51:58Speaker 1: think about accessing and setting up in that kind of
- 52:01Speaker 1: general scenario laid out till we'd given what you just mentioned,
- 52:05Speaker 1: the possible impacts of thermals in that scenario, any other
- 52:08Speaker 1: things you'd be thinking about in that hypothetical. Uh, I
- 52:16Speaker 1: would think that should probably still get some thermal rise
- 52:19Speaker 1: on the hill, even though they get the river at
- 52:20Speaker 1: the base because the side of the hill is gonna
- 52:22Speaker 1: heat up. UM. But rivers, I haven't seen a lot
- 52:27Speaker 1: of thermal impact UM with them. With the moving water,
- 52:32Speaker 1: I think it stays colder. UM. Colder water should expand
- 52:37Speaker 1: and push outward. UM. But I just I haven't really
- 52:41Speaker 1: seen much of an impact with it except for that
- 52:44Speaker 1: if it's at a base of a hill to hill
- 52:46Speaker 1: small you don't seem to get that thermal rise on
- 52:48Speaker 1: the hill UM as much. But I still think it's there,
- 52:53Speaker 1: just it's slighter, you know, UM coming in there. Again,
- 52:57Speaker 1: it would be more based on how that dear is
- 53:00Speaker 1: bedding in there where I think he's at and looking
- 53:03Speaker 1: at what that wind is doing and where it's rising,
- 53:04Speaker 1: where it's fallen, and which direction is actually blowing, and
- 53:08Speaker 1: trying to figure out which direction the deer is going
- 53:10Speaker 1: and get them in front of I mean, it sounds basic,
- 53:13Speaker 1: but but that's basically how I look at it. Yeah,
- 53:16Speaker 1: have you had much experience with river bottom bedding or
- 53:20Speaker 1: creek bottom bedding if you're kind of seen how they're
- 53:22Speaker 1: using that terrain in any kind of consistent way. Yeah,
- 53:26Speaker 1: I mean big river bottoms that are all flat like
- 53:30Speaker 1: floodplains are really hard. Um. Again, you're looking for like
- 53:38Speaker 1: little island clumps of trees where's just a little higher
- 53:40Speaker 1: elevation on that grassy crap you know. Um, you're looking
- 53:44Speaker 1: for ox bows in the river. I mean oxbows have
- 53:47Speaker 1: done really well on UM. What they'll do in an
- 53:50Speaker 1: oxbow is they'll get in there in a monitor, that
- 53:52Speaker 1: little opening, that little land bridge going in there, and
- 53:56Speaker 1: then it comes in there they go through the river
- 53:58Speaker 1: to the other side to get just game. Um, one
- 54:02Speaker 1: of those in the ox bowls, Um, you really got
- 54:04Speaker 1: to look for those edges, um, which in a lot
- 54:08Speaker 1: of cases are going to be worders, little clumps of
- 54:11Speaker 1: trees or something you know, out there, and they're not
- 54:13Speaker 1: going to just bed out in the middle of open grass.
- 54:15Speaker 1: I mean, you probably find beds out there, but it's
- 54:17Speaker 1: not the consistent type of stuff that you can hunt.
- 54:20Speaker 1: And one of the problems is that I've been in
- 54:23Speaker 1: some river bottoms in western Wisconsin where you get in
- 54:25Speaker 1: there and you really learn a buk and then you
- 54:27Speaker 1: come back to the next year you gotta learn it
- 54:29Speaker 1: over again because the flooding puts chamber all over you know,
- 54:33Speaker 1: displaces that all over the place, and the betting changes
- 54:36Speaker 1: because of it. So it is a hard not to hunt,
- 54:40Speaker 1: but it's it's doable. And and again you have to
- 54:42Speaker 1: look at the terrain and um look at how the
- 54:47Speaker 1: land lays out, because they are edged creatures, and that's
- 54:50Speaker 1: you think they're on those transition lines. They're not just
- 54:53Speaker 1: you know, beted out in the middle of grass. Better
- 54:55Speaker 1: there because there's an elevation or because of a clump
- 54:57Speaker 1: of trees, because they have some sort of um vantage
- 55:00Speaker 1: with wind in sight? How do you think that they
- 55:05Speaker 1: use the wind when it comes to bedding in those
- 55:08Speaker 1: oxbowt situations? So I think to correct if I'm wrong here,
- 55:11Speaker 1: but you're kind of talking about those outside big bends
- 55:14Speaker 1: of those s curves in rivers, and then they'll be
- 55:17Speaker 1: where they come together. Are they setting up, you're saying,
- 55:22Speaker 1: facing how creates almost a peninsula. Are they facing out
- 55:27Speaker 1: from that peninsula or are they facing the water and
- 55:29Speaker 1: smelling the bit of land behind him. I've seen him.
- 55:32Speaker 1: I've seen him bed two ways, one with the wind
- 55:35Speaker 1: blowing down the lamb channel into it, and one with
- 55:39Speaker 1: the blowing out where they watched the os, they watched
- 55:42Speaker 1: the land open or to smell it. But most of
- 55:45Speaker 1: the time what I've seen is um where they're smelling it.
- 55:48Speaker 1: They're looking out across the river and the winds blowing
- 55:51Speaker 1: in and they're smelling it. That's been my best scenarios. UM,
- 55:57Speaker 1: that's helpful. I've I've got a couple of public land
- 56:00Speaker 1: river bottom spots I'm gonna be hunting this year, and
- 56:02Speaker 1: I've been thinking through that and scouting that situation and
- 56:06Speaker 1: being curious to see what will play out in real time.
- 56:09Speaker 1: So that's that's interesting. Let's they were really they were
- 56:15Speaker 1: really a key when I hunted in um southwestern Iowa,
- 56:19Speaker 1: where it was all like, we'll open farmland lots of
- 56:23Speaker 1: big bucks that there's hardly any terrain for him. Well
- 56:26Speaker 1: we have to bed ale on those rivers, and those
- 56:28Speaker 1: oxples were just loaded with good bucks. M And then
- 56:33Speaker 1: how do you typically see him travel out of there?
- 56:37Speaker 1: I don't know if this is I'm trying as I'm
- 56:39Speaker 1: just spit ball on here, but I'm wondering would they
- 56:41Speaker 1: usually be bedded on the opposite side. I guess it's
- 56:45Speaker 1: probably wind dependent, but opposite side of the food, like
- 56:48Speaker 1: if if there's a main I'm imagining kind of that
- 56:50Speaker 1: scenario is laid out there where there's these crowd fields
- 56:53Speaker 1: up high and then there's this river bottom down low,
- 56:56Speaker 1: and I'm wondering what they usually bed across the river
- 57:00Speaker 1: from their feeding destination. They then they come up in
- 57:02Speaker 1: the afternoon, they leave their bed cross the river head
- 57:05Speaker 1: up Um or would they be more? I guess it
- 57:08Speaker 1: probably depends on how large the rivers to Um. But
- 57:11Speaker 1: have you seen any tendencies there? Yeah, I've seen him
- 57:16Speaker 1: go through the river to get the crops, and I've
- 57:18Speaker 1: seen him go um the other way to Um and
- 57:21Speaker 1: just walk to the land bridge out Um. The biggest
- 57:26Speaker 1: book I ever shot I didn't recover, but that was
- 57:29Speaker 1: on an oxbow in Iowa. It was a giant twelve
- 57:32Speaker 1: pointer that book. I've seen him in the oxbow. I
- 57:36Speaker 1: jumped him out of it the day before the next day,
- 57:39Speaker 1: I went during the morning and set up before light
- 57:41Speaker 1: went from to come back. It came back at gray
- 57:42Speaker 1: light and he was gonna walk great in the oxbover
- 57:45Speaker 1: to the land bridge get in there, and uh, I
- 57:49Speaker 1: didn't make it. But but yeah, I've seen a lot
- 57:53Speaker 1: of where they just walk the land bridge out, but
- 57:56Speaker 1: they crossed the river too. And in a lot of cases,
- 57:58Speaker 1: the um if the river is deep and fast, they
- 58:02Speaker 1: only want to go through that if they have to escape,
- 58:04Speaker 1: you know. But that's another thing is they won't go
- 58:06Speaker 1: across a huge river. You know, there's gotta be a
- 58:11Speaker 1: valid escape if you've got to be like a quick
- 58:13Speaker 1: couple of bounds and they're out of there. Um. And
- 58:16Speaker 1: another thing is if the river with nowadays how many
- 58:19Speaker 1: people boat and canoe and kayak and stuff. If the
- 58:21Speaker 1: river is getting used by boaters and stuff a lot,
- 58:23Speaker 1: they won't bend those oxpos. So a river that's jammed
- 58:27Speaker 1: up with crap that's smaller usually works better, you know,
- 58:30Speaker 1: kind of a ditch river or something, you know. You know,
- 58:34Speaker 1: let's let's let's jump to a totally different situation now. Um,
- 58:39Speaker 1: let's let's say we are going to you know, I
- 58:44Speaker 1: know no one time. I want to look at how
- 58:46Speaker 1: you would go about zeroing in on a specific buck.
- 58:49Speaker 1: Let's put you on oct and you get word from
- 58:56Speaker 1: another hunter, maybe it's a neighbor, maybe it's another person
- 58:59Speaker 1: to hunt the public that this buck that you spotted
- 59:03Speaker 1: in the summer, or that you saw last year, this
- 59:06Speaker 1: buck's back. Finally, you haven't been a seam all season,
- 59:08Speaker 1: but someone else saw him and said, Hey, that buck's
- 59:12Speaker 1: out there. I saw him. But you personally haven't had
- 59:14Speaker 1: any sightings of him yet this year. You personally have
- 59:17Speaker 1: no trail camera pictures of him this year. Um, and
- 59:20Speaker 1: it's you know, it's well into the season. It's over
- 59:22Speaker 1: a month into the Wisconsin season for you, and he
- 59:25Speaker 1: hasn't been the spots you thought he would be, right
- 59:27Speaker 1: because you you assumed he'd be back, so you would
- 59:30Speaker 1: you scouted for beds and you found where you thought
- 59:32Speaker 1: he'd be. You've hunted them now maybe once, maybe twice,
- 59:35Speaker 1: I don't know. Um, he wasn't there, but now he's alive.
- 59:39Speaker 1: What would you do with this new piece of intel
- 59:43Speaker 1: starting on October to go about try to locate him?
- 59:46Speaker 1: Would it be all right, I'm gonna go hund those
- 59:48Speaker 1: betting areas now because he's back. Or would you go
- 59:50Speaker 1: to Shining or all of a sudden bust out a
- 59:53Speaker 1: bunch of trail cameras. What would you do to to
- 59:56Speaker 1: zero in? Now? So I probably um go over and
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: i'd I try to either see the book or see
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: some sign of them, because there's a little bit of
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: a mistrust with other people. You don't know if somebody's
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: trying to throw you off, so you don't hunt their
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: area by telling you something you want to you know
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: that you want to hear. Um. You don't know if
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: um uh, somebody's a little eight pointer to you is
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: a giant to them. Um. If it's somebody that you
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: trust and the intel is trustable, I'm gonna probably end
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: up going straight over there and hunting. But if it's
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: like the time and that there's a little bit of doubt,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: I want to see some sign. I want to see
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: that the rub line is appeared, that there's some huge
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: tracks over there, that there's there's something going on to
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: tell me that that deer is indeed where this person
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: saw it. And then once I know a deer is
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: over there, I'm just gonna hunt that deer down. I'm
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: gonna go from Bedon area to Beddon area to Bedon
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: area and just punt that whole area down until I
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: run grown across him and and to me that that
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: hasn't been too hard of a scenario. If you know
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: what there is in a certain section and he's not
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: partially on private or something like that, if it's a
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: big section of public and you know he's there. It's
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: really not too hard to just start, you know, figuring
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: out where he should be and just going from section
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: to section section, you know, and if you can't find them,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: figure out what work didn't I go? Work didn't I check?
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: And go through a stand at that, you know, and
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: just keep moving. And that gets me on deer pretty fast.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Can you I know this is kind of tricky to
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: try to pull or sorry to pull together imagine imaginary
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: situation here, but maybe there's even a specific example. But
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: could you just describe in detail what that first hunt
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: in would be like. We've talked about it in generalities
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: many times in the past, but I mean specifically, you know,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: tell me about what you found on the map and
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: what you found previously, and when you sneak in there, um,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: you're gonna walk, you know, tippy toes in the last
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: hundred yards and then you set up with an x
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: number of yards where you know that bed isn't it.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Just walked me through the whole nitty gritty of that
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: first hunt, and just for people that haven't heard in
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: the past, how you would do this, I'd like to
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: just get really detailed on one example, of it Um
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: to kind of color this just a little bit more
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: for people and maybe get into more detail than we
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: have in the past for for folks to have heard that. Okay,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: so what's the train We're going to say that this
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: is this is one of those marshy situations. I've gotta
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I've gotta here you go. Here's an exact scenario. You
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: do know of a spot this buck has been bedded.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: It is marshy stuff. But there is a piece of
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: high ground in this marsh about thirty by thirty yards wide.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: There's a couple of cotton woods on it, let's say,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: a couple of little brushy I don't know, uh, red
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: ocean dog wood type shrubs or something. Maybe a telephone
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: poultry on there too. And then the rest of it
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: surrounded by cattails and water and and I'm gonna give
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: you one more detail. There is a one access road
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: and it's actually relatively close where you can get to UM,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: but it's to the what direction would this be This
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: spot would be to the west of the access road.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: That too much information. That's a very specific scenario. I'm
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: I'm waving in some example data from a from other
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: question into this one, so we'll get double duty here. Okay.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: So I'm gonna make sure the wind's right first of all.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I'm not going into on um something I don't like.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: So if I got the wind right, I'm gonna go
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: into and I'm gonna take that access road as far
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: as I can, and then i'm gonna bust off of it.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna trying not to walk up the deer trails.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna try and trying here on an angle and
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: slide and real slow for the as t yards or
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: so I'm gonna go in the needles. I'm gonna go
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: out if I think it's a kill day, and I'm
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: going into the spot that I want to keep kind
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: of covert. I'm going midday. I don't want to walk
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: past the hunter um, so I want to get If
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: a hunter goes out there, I don't want him to
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: have no idea where I'm at. So I'm gonna go
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: in there and i'm gonna get as close as I can,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: probably to a tree have already picked out. If I
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: know the bed in areas as well as you described it,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: I probably do, So I have a tree in mind already,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: or at least a specific area because I don't always
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: end up in the same tree based on the wind
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: or or the exact wind or whatever or sign. I'm
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: gonna go into slide in her and I'm gonna really
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: slowly put my stand down, take the uh, take it apart,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: start putting the sticks on real slow, quiet, and I'm
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: gonna come up that tree facing the bed in area
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: because I'm probably going to be, if it's marshy situation,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: approximately seventy or eight yards in that bed, and i
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: want the tree between me and the bedding. And I'm
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: gonna go up that tree facing the bed, looking at
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: the bed and one stick at a time, and keep
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: an eye over there for movement for if I'm getting
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: too high or whatever. And then i get to the
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: height where I want to be uh, and I'm not
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: gonna saw anything because I don't want to cause a
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: commotion or noise. And you know, so I'm gonna get
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: to a point where I'm high enough where I'm not
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: gonna get spotted. But I'm not so high and got
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: a shot. I'm gonna try and put the stand right.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: We're in a position where I have natural shooting lines,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: and I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna put the last
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: stick up. I'm gonna have a stand in my back.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna put the stick up, climbant that real slow,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: you know, no fast quick movements, and when I get
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: up there, I'm gonna take the stand up my back
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: and I'm gonna slide around to the front of the
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: tree facing the deer, facing directly at him, and I
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: want to put the stand on that way, and then
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna slide up up that that last stick as
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: far as I can get and just slide around into
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: that stand and from there I'm waiting for that buck
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: to come in. You. You are one of the people
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: who is definitely most popularized this kind of hunting where
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: you'll slip in there close to a bedding area, hang us,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: hang sticks in the stand right there, and hunt it. Um.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: A lot more people are hunting that way now than
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: they were a decade ago. What what's the biggest mistake
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: you are hearing about or that you know that must
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: be happening from these these newer guys and girls trying
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: to do it the way you do it. Um, I
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: gotta believe you're hearing from a lot of these people,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: and there must be some of those like head shaking
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: moments for you where they can keep busy. They're not
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: doing it right. Is there anything that sticks out when
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: you when you think about that. I think the biggest
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: thing is um when people here to details on how
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: dear bed and there's a there's a shadow of doubt
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: if you haven't seen it, and going out and walked
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: out and looked at these beds in the scenarios that
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: have described them, you're probably saying, this guy's nuts. I mean,
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: you know, I haven't seen that or whatever. Then they
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: go out there and they walk out there and they
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: run into it and they find some good bed there
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: and it's just load over rubs and it's exactly where
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: they thought it would be based on what I told him.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Where you look and Victor all our eggs at that basket,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: and they think this is the greatest spot in the world.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: And I see this over and over and over again,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: where guys just think because they found one spot that
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: looks great, I mean just to worn out beds and
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: you know, big robs coming in and out and they're like,
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna kill this deer. And once they're not taken
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: into considerations two things. Number One, there's a specific timing too,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: when it's that bed is getting used. You know, it
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: might be the end of October, it might be wrong, Rod,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: it might be when a certain crop is in. Then
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: if you get that down, uh, then you got to
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: remember that I'm hunting a scenario like that just about
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: every day and on the whole season, you know, get
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: five cracks, you know what I mean? Eighty times a
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: year different, right, every day I had a different spot
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: like that, and they're thinking that that one spot is
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: there kill spots, you know? And Uh. The other thing
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: is is when they find one or two spots like that,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: they can't bring themselves to go walk on a transition
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: set up on a on a road becoming out of
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: a swamp or something. They want to go back to
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: that spot and then they burn it out and then
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: the spot I'm good anymore. Yeah, you mentioned that an
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: important part there is understanding when that beds getting used.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: How like, what are the things that you're looking for
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: to make that determination? How do you figure that out?
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: You really got to be a detective when you look
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: at that in areas like when I look at him
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: in the spring, I'm thinking a lot of things into consideration.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I'm looking at how old beds are, like if you're
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: looking at them after the snow hold, the feces are
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: that are underground, Um, You're you're looking at them to cover. Um.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: Sometimes the beds are hard to see um, and they
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: look like they're older, maybe from early season. Maybe it's
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: right up against on oak flat. Um. Maybe the beds
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: look like they're really fresh when you find them. Maybe
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: they're right at the end of the season. Um. Some
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Beton areas get used all year. Some Betton areas are
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: right up against doll beddings and you start figuring or
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: during the rut. And another thing is that the betton
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: as are just torn up with rubs. You can figure
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: towards the end of October early November. Um. Before. What
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: I've seen from hunting these Beton areas, I've seen this
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: more and more and more as I get older and
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: do more of this, is that there's some really specific timing.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: You go back and you look at there's there's Betan
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: areas that I've hunted for years and years and years,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: and you look at the bucks I've shot there and
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I've hunted them, you know, you know, like throw three
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: sits at them. You hunt them early season and hunt
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: them in November, and you hunting weight season. And it
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: seems to be like when you look back a the past,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: the time and when you killed the deer was you know,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: pretty much the same days. You know, there's a certain
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: time per land you're inner. And you know, even my
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: my primary bed and areas where I have killed deer
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: at all different times of the season, there's specific times
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: when we're the best for giants um. And you know,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: and I've got some bet in areas that look great. Uh,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: some of these bedon areas have like that I would
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: call like nurseries that holds like a lot of two
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: year old bucks um. And those two year olds will
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: rip up a bed in area that put rubs all
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: over the place, and I'll have rubble lots going in
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: and out, and they'll fool people that kills all the
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: sign You know, guys want to hunt there where. You know,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: I look at a big area, like a big marsh hunt,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: and if I've hunted there for a few years, I
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: start to realize that when I kill a monster there,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: it's in one of five or six bet in areas.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: Even though I know of a hundred fifty bet areas
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: out there. You know those are really big old box
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: get to choose the best spots, and some of that
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: takes a little time. I mean, this isn't something you're
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: gonna learn overnight. It's something that you have to work
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: at and be willing to invest time. And two, I
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: mean everybody seems to want that quick fix and that
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: instant success. You know, doesn't It doesn't usually come that easy, right. Um,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: So this this betting area situation, let's dig in here
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: a little bit further with a couple different outcomes. Maybe
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: let's say that you've we've snuck into one of these
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: betting ears you described, You've hung the stand the way
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: you've described. Just as you swing your tree stand to
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: the other side of the tree to get set up,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: you hear a dear blow. You look up and there's
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: a big rack running away in a white tail flagon.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: What are you do in that scenario? Do you bail?
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: Do you you spook the buck? The hunts done onto
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: new place? Or would you think maybe I could reposition
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: and he'll come back in. What would you do if
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: I think you saw me in that trip, I probably
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: will just move. Um, something they'll come back in, but
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: usually not if they see you know, it's a whole
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: different bet in area. If it's the target book, I
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: might try to figure out where he went and move there,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: you know, and circle around someplace to get to where
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: I think he's going. Um, But if you don't, if
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe I'll just go to a different
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: bet in area or something. But I think if you
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: saw me, it's over. Um. You know, if I kick
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: a gear up and I'm walking in or to set up,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I don't think you've seen me. The winds in my favor,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: but it just didn't like something of the sounds I made,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: or something any any soft bumps rather than hard and
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: kind of trots out of there. Well, then I'm gonna
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: probably think about he might come back, and I might
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: look at how is he going to come back? And
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: I've set up on that in the past, and um,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: I've had limited success. And most of the time if
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: I'm busted, it's because the dear circles and downwind and
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: I'm not far enough downwind. So UM, I can think
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: of a few different instances right off the top of
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: my head where I had jumped the buck out of
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: a bed and had set up anyways, and had that
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: buck come back that same day, um and circle way
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: around down wind and bust me. And UM, now I
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: kind of look at it as like, if I jumped
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: that buck and I think he's gonna come back, I'm
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: gonna look down wind and think, Okay, what what is
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: he gonna do when he comes back? Because you are
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: gonna follow a transition or something, And so I want
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: to get on that downwind transition and get him circling
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: around to come back in. But if he saw me
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: or smelled me not moving, here's another mover don't move
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: A scenario. If we're just continuing on here. Let's say
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: you get up in that tree. Fine, you haven't spooked anything,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: but you see another hunter. Maybe another hunter walks by
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: a couple hundred yards away or something, um, hundred hundred
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: fifty yards close enough that you're like, oh, ship, but
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: not so close that he necessarily blew everything out that
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: might be around you. Um, are you gonna wait it out?
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Do you just get out of there? What's your stance
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: or how what's that distance? Source? Situation have to be
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: where you would stay or go and make that decision
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: if you didn't tenetrate the betting, if he didn't get
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: his win into the bedding or whatever, or if he
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: just kept walking past and everyone in there. I just say,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: I just sit there and hunted. And I've had people
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: walk by and had there come up and get up
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: and come past me afterwards. I'm and that's happened quite
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: a few times. And I've even kicked satellite deer that
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: aren't your target here and have them run right through
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: the bedding area, and you think your your hunt's over.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: In a little while later the buck gets upright with
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: those deer ran comes in you know. Um. But I've
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: also had that buck get up and PRONTI there. You know.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: I can remember hunt gun hunting, um, where I want
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: to set up in a bed in area, and I
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: got in there. There's people a little too close for
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: my comfort, but I was already in there. It was late,
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: so I sat there, and right at closing time, a
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: two and a half year old buck got up like
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: thirty yards for me out of the thick dogwood and
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: one step at the time, real if I wanted to
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: shoot him, koto, But it was actually probably right at
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: closing time, the snuck out of there. And uh, you know,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: you'd never dreamed that buck was sitting there with people around,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: you know, But but they'll do that. What's what's too close?
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: Like you mentioned, there's people too close to comfort, too
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: close for comfort for you? What's at range? Where I
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: mean a public land. Sometimes the other guys out there
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: and I've I've hunted and there's somebody within sight. Maybe
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: it's way far away, but you can see a little
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: patch of orange or something. How do you think about that?
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Are you out of there if you can see someone
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: at all, or if you know they're within a couple
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: hundred yards or what's that range of comfort for you?
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: You know, more it's a matter of what what they're
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: getting into, not really where they're at. You don't have
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: a person pretty close to you, and it doesn't bother
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: me at all. Um, I don't like them knowing where
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: I'm at, But that's a different story. But to me,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: I mean, if they're infringing on your beding area, if
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: they're infringing on your box, that's where they're kind of
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: blowing your hunt. Um. But like you said, when a
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: person walks by, there's two kinds of walks by. They
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: walk the trail, at every hundred it walks through their
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: walks where do you expects them? Or they wander off
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: into the water real close to the bedding and through there.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: I mean you can walk right past it here if
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: you're on a trail, or or expects you, but you
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: should start getting off of it. They get real nervous
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: if you go where you don't belong. So if if
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: a hunter is just out there kind of wandering around,
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: like trying to kick up ducks or something duck hunting
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: and walks into the water a little bit and stuff
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: around the beding area, there's no way I'm staying around.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: Or if the guy's hunting and fringing at um or
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: say he's a hundred yards away and his wind is
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: blown right into my beding area and he's gonna stay
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: a little dark, that would probably talk me into getting
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: down and moving. Yeah, those are frustrating moments, that's for sure. Yeah,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: it happens to everybody eventually. Yes, yes it does. Let's
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: let's look at to a instead of circumstances that I
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: think a lot of people do with, and I'm what
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: I'm most interested in is is how you would approach
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: this situation at different points in the year. The situation
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: in general, let's say is you've gone in and you're
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: hunting a location that you've you've previously picked out into something.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: It's a betting area that you snuck in instead of
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: stand on um, or it's it's a spot that you
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: came to specifically to hunt this spot, and then you
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: spot a mature buck move out of range where you
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: didn't expect him. Maybe let's say he's eighty yards away
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: or a hundred yards of way, so you've seen him
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: do something outside of what you expected. What would you
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: do the next day? In if this sighting was in
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: early season, so let's say October one, versus if it
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: was in the middle of the rut, we'll say November eight,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: versus if it was late season, we'll say end of December.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: Would you do the exact same thing every one of
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: those days? Would you think about stay or go decision
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: differently depending um what's your take on that. If the
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: deer was doing the same thing in each one of
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: those scenarios, like not chasing a door or something, I
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: think I would do the exact same thing in each scenario.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: I would I would get down. The next day, I'd
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: move over and hunt with that book was I think
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: your odds are probably a little higher in the late
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: season scenario. They're really patternable at that time, and then
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: their second most patternable in the early season um, and
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: then they're in the ruts, still patternable, but it sure
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: won't lasts long. Yeah, that's that's my biggest curiosity was
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: the right situation, because it's it's possible that what they're
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: doing is totally random at that time of the year,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: but at the same time, sometimes it's not um alright
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: for you as it all just based off of their behavior.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Is are they with a dough do they look at
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: their cruising or they wandering or you know what? You know,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: even if it's within the doll, I gotta wonder if
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: the doll is going to do the same thing. I
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: really like Hunton patterns um and and you know a
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: lot of the times you're wrong, maybe maybe three out
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: of four times that deer doesn't show up again the
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: next day in the same spot. But you know, I
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: like the odds of want of four. These aren't bad. Now,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: is that only if you've got the exact same or
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: similar wind, or would you do it even if the
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: wind changes? Well, that's a good question. I mean, he
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: might not even be bed near or on that scenario
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: if the wind changes. But I certainly am going to
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: change if the wind changes for the bad, But I
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: might give it a shot if it If it's not
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: the same A lot of times um, and especially in
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: certain terrains, UH, they'll have other bed and areas real
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: close to where they were betted and still come out
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: using the same trail, still stage the same areas, UH,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: and do the same things. So there's a very good
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: chance that he'll still walk down that trail the next
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: day if the wind's wrong. Um. However, that's another one
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: where I think the odds are even lowered during rout
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: because in rout, a lot of times you're betting the
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: trail went based on the wind a lot more than
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: the art o the times of the year. HM. Let's
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: look at this slightly different version of this, which is
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: something that a lot of people deal to where it's
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: trail camera based intel. So rather than you're seeing a
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: deer somewhere and you want to move there, let's now
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: say instead you've got a daylight trail camera picture of
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: a buck doing something, and he's doing it yesterday and
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: either you've got a cell phone picture or you checked
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: it this morning or something. You know, Hey, he moved
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: in daylight here yesterday, but today I've got different conditions.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: Let's say he did two days in a row, or
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: two out of two out of three days he moved
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: in daylight in this spot with a westerly wind of
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: some kind. Today you find out about it. But you've
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: got easterly winds or some variation. Do you think the
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: winds different. I'm not going in or do you have
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: to try? Because hey, he was in the area and
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: he was daylight. I gotta try. What are your thoughts there?
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: Usually I'm waiting for that that wind to repeat. Um. However, um,
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: I guess said, ah, that could be that could change it.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: Like say, stay at the morning picture and he's he's
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: under in daylight in the morning, I'm gonna say, Okay,
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: well he's better really close, right, So then I might
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: try and slip in there. Um. But I think if
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: I have a pattern to wind, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: wait for that wind to be the same. I'm not
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: gonna go in there and disrupt a good thing. If
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: the wind's wrong, I'm gonna try and wait for the
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: same pattern. Um, I really don't want to wait too
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: long because you see, and you know this as well
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: as I do, those patterns in those betters. They might
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: be there four or five days and then they're gone
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: for two weeks, you know. I had a scenario like
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: that last year. I mean, I had a cell camo
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: and it was on a little tiny island on a
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: place about, you know, for five minutes from my house,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: and I put the cell camera there and then I
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: travel over and hunt. When you know the bucks are there,
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: there's this real big twelve point on one to get,
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: but there's other bucks I didn't even know about. And
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: it turned out like sixteen different pope and young bucks
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: were within in the swamp or going past that camera.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: And that camera get real active at times, and it
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: was so hard to pattern those deer because you'd pattern
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: him and then you go in there and they're bedded
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: so close you'd kick him out. But it was the
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: only place you could hunt. Everything was up to your
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: waist and water, you know, until you're on that island
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: and the islands a quarter eight here. Um. One time
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: I had that twelve point on there in daylight in
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: the morning in front of that camera, walked past with
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: a doll right around Halloween. Uh So I thought, well,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: he's got to be bedding right there. And I'm speak
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: of the wind. It is perfect. It was a rare
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: east wind, and it gave me a chance to get
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: right in there. And I'm saying I could just slip
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: out of the water right up a tree. I said,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: on the tree that thing was bed at ten yards
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: from the camera. But you can't see them because the
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: camera's not aiming at him. Sometimes those cameras frustrate you
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: more than they help you. Yeah, sure, man. So did
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: you ever figure out a way to try to hunt
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: in there without blowing them out? Or was that every year?
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: I've been hunting that deer for four years. Um. This
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: last year, I really spent some time in our winter
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: swimming around, and uh, I really got into the area,
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: found a couple of new uh ways to get at them.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: Um going from a canal without with a kayak, I'm
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: gonna I found a spot where or some just a
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: couple of trees off to the side where there's a
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: killer bedder I didn't even know about. Um, And uh
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: it was a tangle I got earned the middle of
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: the summer and opened it up, and and I had
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: to cut a trail to get to it, um in
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: July because it's so thick with cat tells you could
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: not get to it quietly. So I have some other
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: asset ways to it in r U try. I don't
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: know how much longer this here is going to be alive.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: He's pretty old, um, but I believe he's still alive.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: I I got a glimpse of a giant there shining
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: two weeks ago coming out of that stuff that I
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: think with him, But I'm not absolutely positive he speaking
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: of shining. This is something that, um, that I've been
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: thinking about a little bit more. And I know what
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: you we've talked about a little bit in the past.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: But are there any things, um, for people that want
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: to add that as something they can do, which in
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: some states, as you mentioned, you cannot do. In some
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: states you can do, but there are certain windows of
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: time when you're allowed to versus not, So make sure
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: you check your regulations, um, But can you just elaborate
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: a little bit on some specific times you should do
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: that or ways you should do it in in such
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: a fashion that actually helps you. So basically we're talking
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: about shining a spotlight and fields, but can you dive
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: into that a little bit more deeply and how you
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: can make that most useful from a hunting perspective. Yeah,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: I try to. I try not to waste my time
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: shining areas where I can't hunt. To me, it's not
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: about to sightseeing or you know, and then if it's
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: private lands and as you kiss people off, So I
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: try to stick to the to the public or to
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: land adjacent to the public where I hunt, and or
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: the farm that I have permission on, and I just
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: try to catch the deer. I think a lot of times,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: you know, here up until like I think it's uh
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: September tenth or fifteenth or something like that, you can
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: you shine all night and then and then there's a
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: limit at ten o'clock. When you shine all night, I mean,
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: wait until about ten or eleven o'clock at night or
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: even later is sometimes a good thing because they're pretty
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: shy about getting to the roadsides until later. And often
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: if you go too early, as you see, is green
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: eyes a half mile back? You know, Um, catching by
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: the roads is better. I feel a lot of my
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: biggest stuff, you find a lot of my biggest stuf
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: fearing like three or four in the morning, UM, usually
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: on my way to work. UM. So once I find something,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: I narrowed down. So I'll go look at public properties
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: all over the place that I know about, and I'll
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: start narrowing my focus. First it will be a really
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: wide neck. And then when I locate some good stuff,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I'll start, you know, really start looking around the area
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: where that good stuff is and narrowing my focus and
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: then trying to figure out what fields they're going into,
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: or that the particular buck is going into, how wide
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: his pattern is, and I just try to Once I've
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: got that kind of down, I try to keep a
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: rough eye on him, you know where I'm not harassing him,
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: but I just keep caps so if his pattern starts
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: changing before season, that I'm onto it and I know
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: where he's moving to or what's going on with him,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: and then you can pin that setting down to, well,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: if he's feeding out in this field at three in
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: the morning, there's a decent chance that he's betted in
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: this place. Three quarters of a mile away in this
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: place is the other direction that that's kind of how
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: you start picking where he's mostly spending time. So you
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: might be seeing him in a field at like three
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: in the morning, and a couple of nights in a
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: row you're seeing three in the morning. Then you know, Um,
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: the next night you go out at ten pm and
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: he's two fields over. The next day you go out,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: you know, just before daylight, at like five in the morning,
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: you catch him on the other side of field over.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: I think the direction of travel, you know, so the
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: different time frames and stuff helped too. Yeah, that's a
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: good point, because that's that's the probably the biggest thing
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: is is you can you need point A and point
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: B is great, but if you don't know direction to
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: travel and when he's traveling that direction, you don't have
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: that connecting part of the puzzle. Yeah. Now, this is
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: a situation that maybe shining would be the answer to
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: to some degree. Um, maybe not, But what about this
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: totally different set of circumstances. This maybe is more of
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: a mental thing than anything. Your season open September. Right,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: Let's say we get all the way to November. It's
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: been November, you've hunted in early season, you've hunted through October.
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: You put in a bunch of long days during the
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: first part of the rut, and you've yet to get
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: eyes on the mature buck, nothing that you want to
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: shoot yet. You've seen young ones, you've seen lots of doughs,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: but you've had other hunters coming and muck your stuff up.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: Just stuff's been going wrong. It's been a bad year.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: How do you mentally handle that? I don't know if
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: you had maybe you've had a year like that at
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: some point in your experience and you can talk to
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: me about how you handled that situation. And then secondly,
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: from a tactical standpoint, at this point, you've been hunting
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: weeks and weeks and weeks and nothing. Do you think
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: that it's a keep on, keeping on kind of situation? Like, Hey,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: if you just keep doing the right things long enough,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: it'll finally come together. Or is it? No? I need
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: to call them major audible and really change things up. So,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: I mean, everybody has hard times in their hunting. Um,
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: I think they affect me a lot less. Now. I
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: think if you grow with confidence you know what I mean,
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: as as you grow as a hunter, and I know
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: my tactics work. I know what I'm doing works, So
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: a streak of bad luck doesn't really bother me as
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: much as it probably bothers other people, And uh I
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: can kind of laugh at those mistakes more than other people,
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: I think. But I just keep going. And uh, I
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: really don't worry about yesterday. I worry about tomorrow. I think,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: to me, the only thing that really matters is what's
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: going on tomorrow. You can't change the past. So I've
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: got a different attitude than most people too. Um Usually
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: if I go if I'm hunting a certain bucket, I'm
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: hunting an area down and there's you know, ten spot.
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: He could be about nine spots, and I'm smiling. I
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: feel like my my aunts are going up. I've eliminated
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: a lot of spots, you know. And if I go
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: through all ten, then I'm thinking of all case hiding
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: some spot that I'm not expecting. I'm gonna go search
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: a little harder, you know. But I do feel like
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: I'm getting closer. Even if I'm not seeing something. If
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I know he's there, I'm gonna home down and find them.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: And if I'm not onto something that or anything, I'll
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: just go off on a mission and find something, you know,
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: if it means us skipping a day of hunting and
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: putting a hard disk out and I'll go find something,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: you know, and you get to that November time frame,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: you can tell if a buck has been in an
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: area it's ripped up, you know. And I'll just go
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: and check public lands and maybe the spots I haven't
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: been to and just start going on admission to get
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: out them. You know. Yeah, yeah, So is that a
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: situation that's ever? Like you said, it's it's almost invigorating
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: maybe because you know you've you've you've crossed all these
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: different things off the map and you can finally say
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: you're narrating down when you get into a deal like that.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: Do you are you at the point yet where that's
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: like a fun challenge like ship, I'm gonna figure it
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: out no matter what. Yeah, you know, UM, I do
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: get that way. I get it. I get kind of
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: like a cocky attitude where it's like, oh, you think
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: you got me out smarted. You know I'm gonna get you.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: You know. Um, I do get that way. And sometimes
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: you fail anyways, but it really doesn't feel like you fail,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: I mean to me, or is something, um there's like
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: an inner drive with me, like a like we're I
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: love to chase more than to kill and and uh,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: as long as I'm on something, I'm on a buck
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: and I'm I'm out there trying, I'm happy. You know.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: It's almost like, uh, anti climatic when you wouldn't shoot
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: your thing, or you get one early season and you're like,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: well now what you know, it's like I can't be
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: out of state for the whole next three months. But yeah,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: it isn't the same it was when I was younger.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: I think a young guy goes out there, he's got
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: something to prove. He doesn't have a lot of bucks
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: under his belt, and he wants to show everybody that
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: he's he's a good hunter and he's adequate at what
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: he does, um, and that he's capable of doing it,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: and that he's not just all talk. So he's going
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: out there really trying to kill something. When you see
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: those young guys where you know they'll miss a shot
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: or something'll swear it themselves to throw the boat down
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: on the piste, you know, or a guy that has
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: done this for a while and just laugh at it
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: and go, you won this time, you know, um. And
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: so it's a different ballgame when you get to when
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: you're becoming an accomplished hunter. I think you're stages you
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: go through in life, and I guess some people probably
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: don't get all the way into stages, but you know,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: some people do. You mentioned the specific example of missing
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: a buck. What do you do now when you miss
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: a buck? What's how do you handle that? Mentally? How
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: do you and there was there anything you do in
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: the days afterwards to get your mind right again, or
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: to get your shooting right or anything. I know you
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: had a season I don't know if it was last year,
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: a couple of years ago where he had a little
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: bit of that streak like that. How do you mentally
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: and tactically handle that? Yeah, I had a pretty bad
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: streak last year. Um. I think I I blew five
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: opportunities in a row. Um, and that's a really nice box. Uh,
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: one of them at sixteen points at least that I
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: could count from the tree. And uh, you just you know,
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: it was frustrating more more than I'd like to admit.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: I'd like to tell you that. Uh, you know, I
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: laughed it all off, but you know I laughed probably
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: the first two off everyone's glass. But then you're starting
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: to realize there's something off in your game, you know. Um,
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: I just there's something that wasn't right with between me
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: and my bowl. Um. I know I had an issue
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: with my um my peep. I think my vision is
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: starting to get bad as I get older, and uh
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: to topple that. I had some string twist problems and
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: I kept twisting it, um, and I wasn't going to
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: change it right in the middle of the season, and
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: it got pretty frustrating. Um. But what I did was
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: I went back home and I worked at it. I practice,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: you know, I try to make sure everything's on, you know,
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: and and UH just go out there and get back
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: on the saddle and do it again, you know. And
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: I do think that or some people just get really frustrated.
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: I do get in the mode where you kind of
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: get like, this ain't gonna happen to me, and I'm
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: going to prove I can't do this. And I and
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: I hunt harder, you know, I scout harder. I pushed harder.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: And even though I had all those failures last year, man,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: I sure got him to deer. You know how I
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: was on I'm like crazy. Yeah. What about the opposite
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: situation from the one we're kind of talking about where
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: you have a bad run of luck and you either
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: miss some bucks or just can't get them on them
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: all season without the opposite you. You just kind of
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: mentioned it in passing a second ago, where you fill
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: your tag early early, you kill on opening day, maybe
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: you kill your buck September and it's a one buck
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: state and yeah, maybe you can do an out of
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: state trip, but most people can't go out of state
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: for two months or three months or whatever. How would
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: you recommend or I guess you, what would you do
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: to make the most of your time over the coming
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: weeks and months after you've filled that tag and you've
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: taken your out of state trip? Um, what specifically could
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: you do in a season like that? Well, Um, for me,
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: I can't just I'm a different breed and I can't.
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: I just can't go out and just hunt those But
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: you just say an enemy. I love shooting them when
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: they come buy Walmoutton or whatever. But I just can't
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: bring myself to go out get doe hunter. So what
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: I like to do is, um, I do the out
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: of state trips, and then when I'm not doing out
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: of state trips, I'm either scouting or I'm taking from
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: I love to put guys that I know on on
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: Boxer or guys that I know are having a hard time.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: I just randomly say I want to go hunt, and
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: then I take about and put him some wors and
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: helped get a deer and I feel really good about that. Um.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: But the scouting is really key, um, because there's not
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: too often that you have time where you can go
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: scout during season and look at those beds while they're
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: being used and not have to worry. You know, So
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: go in and scout those beding areas right during season
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: and look at what's going on. UM, I can really
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: teach you a lot more than looking at them two
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: months later after season. You know, yes, so is is
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: the best thing due to literally boots on ground, hit
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: all your good stuff in season to see exactly what's happening. Um?
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: Or do you have to worry? Does does observation factor
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: at all into the type of scouting you want to
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: do in season two? Because I'm I mean there's value
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: in watching too. UM. Do you try to balance that
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: at all? Or what are your thoughts there? Not sure
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: but you know you know, UM, not as much. But
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: I do glass a little bit um after my tags
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: are filled. But I really like to just get in
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: and look at the bed nears um too, and see
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: what's being used and what's not at at specific time frames.
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: You know, kick a nice tear out of something and
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: look at it where you really wouldn't want to do
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: that in season otherwise. I hope that I have a
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: ear like that. Someday I had one. Yet when I've
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: got a whole bunch of season left where I don't
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: have a dag, just out a bunch of somehow, always
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: find myself still chasing my tail around. But one of
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: the years I hope to put that into practice. Um.
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: But speaking of the end of things, um to final
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: questions before I let you get back to your evening, Dan,
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: two scenarios of sorts. Um, here's here's the last one.
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: And we we talked about this a little bit. That
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: being the fact that right there's more people that hunt
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: like you do now than probably ever before, because of
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: the media you put out, because of podcast like this one,
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: because of all these other things where people are talking
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: about how to hunt in a mobile fashion, how to
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: key in on betting areas, how to be aggressive. Um,
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: it's a different world now than it was in two
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: thousand five. So what if I were to tell you
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: and you've kind of had a situation like this, if
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: you look at the public land challenges, where there's a
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: bunch of guys that kind of hunt like you. But
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: let's say that we're hunting one piece of public land.
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: Let's say it's pretty big, but there's a bunch of
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: guys that hunt like you. There's a bunch of really
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: good beast mode deer hunters, like a lot more of
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: us are dealing with. Now we're all dealing with more
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: effective hunters. What are you doing now differently in that
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: scenario than you had to do ten or fifteen years ago,
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: because everyone's doing it like this. Welcome to my life,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: especially around my Alice. I mean, you gotta remember around
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: where I live, um is all Marsh Train and those
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: original Marsh Hunting DVDs, especially at Blood Brothers one. I
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: probably sold those videos around here. Um, it used to
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: be all of all the islands out here and stuff,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: we're all pretty much mine. Um. And now there's trails
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: going out to there's guys hunting on him every weekend
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: and stuff. And what happens is the deer change and
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: you have to adapt with them. Um, So gear are
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: still here. It's just a pressure puss of a different spots.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: So you've got to find the spots that are a
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: little more hidden, a little more overlooked, a little more
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: off to the side. Um, and you've gotta work a
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: little harder. The good part is is usually, um, the
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: pressure from those guys puts those deer in pretty specific spots.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: I mean, there's very little spots that aren't getting hit anymore. Um,
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: and that's where they're at, you know. Um. And and
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: another good thing is is it used to be on
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: public land, every guy you ran into shot any deer
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: they saw because you're you're you're, you're so called good
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: hunters were all hunting private land. Which there's people now
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: that have private land that really would rather hunt on
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: public which, um, kind of surprising that people are tending
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: that wrong. But I'm running into a lot better hunters
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: on public than I used to, a lot more knowledgeable guys,
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: guys doing it the right way, and uh um, some
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: pretty cool hunters. Um, but they are infiltrating all the
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: spots used to hunt. So I just I have to
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: help my game and figure out that you're a little better.
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: Can you describe an example of what that um less
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: obvious spot might be. Like, let's say, like the obvious
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: stuff is what we learned about in that first DVD,
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: which is your your islands in a marsh or a
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: point extending out into a marsh. Like everyone knows that now,
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: so that's obvious to most guys or girls. What what
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: would be the dan infalt pro move? And now maybe
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: you don't want to give us away, Maybe maybe you
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: need to hold this one back then, But what's like
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: that off the beaten path adjustment? Now that's where you
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: have to adjust to. Well. Um, there's still betting on
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: the points, the islands, things like that, but they're betting
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: on ones that aren't as obvious. You can't seem as
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: well on a on a map. Um, Sometimes you gotta
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: get your eyes on to really see what's going on. UM.
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: Spots you find, um that you really can't see unless
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: you walk them. So you go through there in winter,
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: I've still not seeing many guys doing the winter scouting. Um.
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: For how many guys I've seen out there on the
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: island and stuff, it's it's pretty impressive, But I go
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: out there and in winter spring I'm not seeing people.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: So people still aren't adapting in that manner very well.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: But they are hunting the obvious stuff that they didn't
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: used to hunt. So putting some boots on the ground
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: and really scouring those those transitions, I found a lot
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: of really really good stuff that's like thick transitions with
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: mixed um dogwood and tamaracks, stuff that slowly mix us
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: into cattails and stuff. And there's a point but it's
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: really hard to see when you get in there and
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: you find this little hole that's perfect for a deer,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: but you really couldn't see it unless you walked inner
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: and looked. But you know, and some of those spots,
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: believe paid off a lot more nice I can. I
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: can envision a spot just like that on a place
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: I hunt that I've kind of discovered something similar. So
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: it's interesting you say that. Um, okay, here's my last one. Dan,
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: You've been a good sport. Thank you for for tackling
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: all these these various ideas that I'm sending your way.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: But here's the last one. Um, I'm an asshole, and
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: I am going to take away your hunting rights for
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: all of the next ten years. Dan. You can't hunt
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: at all for ten years unless unless this coming season.
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: You're able to kill a four and a half year
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: old er older buck, but I'm not gonna give you
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: one day to do it. You've got one day to
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: save the next ten years of your hunting life. What
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: day are you going to choose for that very high
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: stakes hunt? And then, with as much detail as you
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: can possibly describe, describe the ideal spot you are going
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: to hunt on that specific day to kill this buff
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: that's gonna save your next ten years. Um, probably December one? Wow?
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: And uh, probably I'm gonna hunt at a food source
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: that I've been glassing. Interesting, I would have not have
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: expected that late season. So okay, give me a little
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: more detail on this. So you've been glassing of food source.
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: It's super late season. Um, how are you setting up
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: on this food source on December thirty one? You've been
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: glassing so Um. What I found is the most patternable
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: time to kill him mature bulk in daylight is right
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: at the end of our season up here. If you're
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: talking Wisconsin, I think it changes if you get to
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: the south because of the warmer weather, but usually that
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: coincid sides with us getting really cold, and usually right
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: about the last week of the season here, it just
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: really gets on fire and there's nobody else out there. Um,
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: but it is um feast your famine. So you're either
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: in the deer or not. But um, if you drive around,
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: you you scout a lot, you go check a lot
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: of spots. You'll find a spot or um a lot
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: of deer kyrie and there'll be some big bucks in there.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: And it takes watching them from a distance to kind
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: of pinpoint and then make a move. And uh Um.
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: I haven't killed a ton of bucks doing that, mainly
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: because I'm usually tagged out at that time of the year.
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: But I put some of my friends on some really
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: good ones and I have taken a few at that
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: time frame and had a lot of fun. Triumph. Um.
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: There are some downfalls, Like I can remember a couple
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: of years back when I was onto a group of
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: deer that were feeding in some dogwoods and they'd show
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: up every night, and I was using a human access
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: trail to get back here, and I climb up a
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: tree dlo that access and people would walk that trail
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: during the day and once or twice a week and
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: deer were used to human scent on him and I
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: would get in there and these boxes start coming out
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: and there was there's at least three deer in the
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: one sixties and uh one big ten point. I really
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: wanted to shoot. And I finally got that deer rennerneath me,
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: and he came walking right under the base in my
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: tree and got out to about ten or eleven yards
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: and turned quartern away and turned his head face and
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: the other way as it drew, and like I got him.
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: And right when I came to full draw, I heard
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: a snort beside me and an eight pointer had spotted
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: me in the tree, and as I squeezed the trigger,
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: the tent pointer to run him. Luckily I completely missed
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: them because because dropping the string. But that's the downfall
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: is you have a lot of deer on you have
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: a lot of eyes on you, there's no cover in
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: the trees. Yeah, but it is probably the best time
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: to shoot immature book is at the end of the season,
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: and you can drive around during a car in any
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: perk and lunter and and sole in the woods, especially
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: if you gets done to like ten degrees. But man
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: of the deer out, well, that is has a good answer.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: It is not what I was expecting. So I like
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: a little surprise here at the end. Dan, it's good stuff. UM,
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: I appreciate it. I appreciate you playing along with this idea.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: And I learned some new things here today about you,
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: which which is cool. UM for people listening that want
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: to get more from you, who want to see your
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: videos or read your forum or FOLLO along with anything
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: you've got going on or any of your different products
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: and things like that. What do you want people to
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: know about? Where should they go? I got a great
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: YouTube page that's got some really good videos of the
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: hunts that I do. Um. You can follow me on Facebook, UM,
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: I tell some cool stories, or you can communicate with you.
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: There have a website called uh dock the Hunting Beast
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: dot com that's a foreign base. UM and uh I
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: sell climbing sticks and I'm gonna have a lot of
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: stock at the end of next month, the sticks that
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: everybody's looking for. And what's the website to find the
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: sticks Hunting Beast gear dot com. Perfect? All right, Dan,
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: you passed the what would you do challenge with line colors?
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: That's fun fun. Yeah, I'm glad you enjoyed. I enjoyed
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: it too. So if we enjoyed it. That's all that matters, right,
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: all right, Dan, Well, thank you and best of luck.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: I hope that you don't have one of those seasons
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: where it's mid November and you're still trying favre out
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: what to do? You know? Then ideal situation, you pounded
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: all year and you shoot, you shoot your book on
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: December thirty one and the last day. There is nothing
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: sweeter than that. You're right, that is the uh, the
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: slow build, that's the slow build. All right, Dan, this
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: has been great, Thanks again, Okay, thank you, and that's
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: gonna do it. I hope you guys enjoyed that one.
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: Make sure check out all the rest of Dan's content
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: across The Hunting Beast and elsewhere. And as I mentioned
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: at the top, listen to the other episodes that we
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: have a Dan in Fault. They're really good. They cover
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: different ground in what we covered today and uh And honestly,
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: even if you already listened to it, it might be
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: worth re listening to. With this new information in your head,
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: I think stuff will start to make more sense. So
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: check it out. Search for Dan and fault. Um, he's
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: he's been on a bunch. They're all great. So with
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: that said, thanks for listening, good luck with your summer scouting,
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: or if it's during the hunting season when you're listening
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: to this, good luck with your hunting and until next time,
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: stay wired to hunt.
