- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05The JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the five o'clock
- 0:08shadow.
- 0:08And as always, on Wednesday, I speak to Skullclo, Portfolio Manager at PSG Wealth
- 0:15Old Oak in
- 0:17Cape Town.
- 0:19I want to start with the JSC today for a change, Skullc,
- 0:21not going on some tangent about my geopolitical views.
- 0:23That will come later.
- 0:25JSC today, I noticed 91's results came out and I noticed the market didn't
- 0:29particularly like it.
- 0:31Them rather.
- 0:33This is a company we both know well.
- 0:35And like.
- 0:35I mean, let's make no mistake.
- 0:38I've got a massive respect for Fuen.
- 0:41I think he's one of the best leaders, CEOs,
- 0:48not just in South Africa, but in the world.
- 0:50I really, I mean, this is a...
- 0:52This is a great company, and as the name implies, 1991 or 91.
- 0:57And, yeah, it's been a company in existence this year for 35 years, and it's
- 1:03been run really, really well.
- 1:05Yes, it got really hammered today.
- 1:07At the moment, a share retraced by 5% or more,
- 1:13and at one stage it was down quite a bit more.
- 1:17Then you ask yourself the questions, you know, is why?
- 1:20And.
- 1:21I looked at the results.
- 1:22I think, you know, for somebody that's reading through the results would
- 1:28immediately say, but it doesn't look too bad.
- 1:30I mean, they mention all the right buzzwords.
- 1:31I mean, how the assets under management have improved.
- 1:37We're talking about 172 billion.
- 1:39I mean, that's up to 172 billion.
- 1:44So that is up from… Which currency?
- 1:47Let's make it clear.
- 1:48Which currency are you talking about?
- 1:49Pounds.
- 1:50Pounds.
- 1:53So, yes, but then when you look at it,
- 1:57because it's up from £131 billion.
- 2:00Remember the Sunlum transaction that added £2.8 billion to them.
- 2:07And they talk about the market and
- 2:11FX impact was close to £20 billion.
- 2:15So the moment you look at that, then suddenly it...
- 2:18The net flows didn't look too attractive.
- 2:19And I think that's what the markets say, well, why?
- 2:22So I call this results, you know, looking forward and looking into the rear view
- 2:28mirror.
- 2:30You know, looking in the rear view mirror, one can see, yes, asset management's up,
- 2:34but it's up really on the back of acquisitions and some market movement.
- 2:41And foreign exchange, so it's not money coming in.
- 2:43There we go.
- 2:44It's not really money coming in.
- 2:45Now looking ahead.
- 2:47They mentioned in this results, and that was a bit worried.
- 2:52When you look at an asset management company, in this case, like 91,
- 2:57the most important product you're selling is the ability to outperform your
- 3:03benchmarks.
- 3:05This is what you sell.
- 3:06We know that active management is constantly under threat from passive
- 3:12management, as we speak.
- 3:14But when you look at the, you know,
- 3:16performances they mention it the the the the one year outperformance softened
- 3:23from
- 3:2468 last year to 56 now now that's a that's to me looking ahead
- 3:31is why the market's saying well now we worry it because yes we didn't see any
- 3:38solid flows this year but
- 3:40for any of their big clients attracting
- 3:41new money for the next year is going to be tough if you're selling something that's
- 3:45only barely been able to manage to outperform its benchmarks.
- 3:51And also, you know, we know it's been tough.
- 3:54I mean, there's going to be some, you know, worries on the current SSN and
- 4:00management.
- 4:01The presentation scope will be terribly important because it's very, very easy to
- 4:06explain this.
- 4:08It's because the benchmarks are the S&P and the NASDAQ and the FTSE and the JSC,
- 4:13et cetera.
- 4:15Very, very narrow markets.
- 4:15In other words, dominated by not a handful, but a couple of handfuls of
- 4:20stocks.
- 4:20And that's where the passive managers during this time, this is where they make
- 4:26hay, these passive managers,
- 4:28because the sun is shining for them, because the indexes are going up.
- 4:29It doesn't mean, doesn't tell the full picture.
- 4:32So a very diverse active manager like 91 doesn't do quite so well in these times.
- 4:37That's my assessment.
- 4:39I totally agree with you.
- 4:40So it was sort of the perfect storm.
- 4:42So listeners out there, Lindsay, you've actually hit the nail on its head.
- 4:47You couldn't do it better.
- 4:48The problem is just I would say more than 90% of the world is not as knowledgeable
- 4:54as you.
- 4:56And they look at a fact sheet and they look, they skip straight to two things.
- 5:01They go to the performance and they go to the fees.
- 5:04And, you know, when they struggle, they don't ask the questions.
- 5:07and listeners out there Go and pull a graph.
- 5:10It's very easy.
- 5:10You can actually look.
- 5:11There's some ETFs on them.
- 5:15Just go pull a fact sheet from one of these ETFs and put in
- 5:22MSCI World Momentum ETF, MSCI
- 5:28World Quality ETF.
- 5:30Compare the two's performances and there you'll see your answer.
- 5:3391 is a quality manager.
- 5:35They invest in very… quality type of model where when you look at the likes of the
- 5:41allen gray they're
- 5:43more value orientated when you've got a market
- 5:44like we've seen over the past few months which just gone one direction and that's
- 5:51momentum it's momentum type of stocks
- 5:53it's the tech stocks it's the semiconductors that
- 5:55is not going to be an environment that's going to be conducive or positive for for
- 6:02the last 90 months yes i agree i would
- 6:04set it out i think they've got one of the most quality teams in the world But, yeah,
- 6:08I think the market is a tough one currently.
- 6:10The last thing I'll say about 91 is that I'm still speaking to the same people I
- 6:16was speaking to 10 years ago,
- 6:1815 years ago in some cases.
- 6:19They're still there at the company managing money on behalf of their clients.
- 6:23So it's not one of those high churn, high turnover businesses when it comes to
- 6:28staff.
- 6:29And they incentivize their staff with equity in the company.
- 6:34A good chunk of the company is owned by the people.
- 6:37that work there.
- 6:37They keep their really good quality people.
- 6:40Right, enough of 91.
- 6:41Share price down.
- 6:42We'll come to that in a moment.
- 6:43This is my geopolitical rant.
- 6:47This war's going nowhere, Skalk.
- 6:49This war is going nowhere.
- 6:50There's no such thing as a ceasefire.
- 6:52Netanyahu is not listening to Trump.
- 6:54Trump is not listening to Netanyahu.
- 6:56Trump has got bored with Iran.
- 6:59There's no negotiations going on.
- 7:00The Strait of Hormuz is still essentially closed.
- 7:03A few tankers are slipping through because...
- 7:07They're important ones like the ones going to China, etc.
- 7:10But on the other hand, the key here is Lebanon, I think.
- 7:16And Netanyahu and his right-wing cabinet who are prodding him are not going to
- 7:22listen to anyone.
- 7:24There was supposed to be a ceasefire starting 36 hours ago.
- 7:26It's being broken every hour.
- 7:28And the same with the ceasefire between Iran and the U.S.
- 7:31and Israel.
- 7:32So this war's not stopping.
- 7:34No one's listening to each other.
- 7:36And there's vested interests there that mean that we are going to be enduring high
- 7:41oil prices for a long time.
- 7:43And I'm very, very fearful that eventually this is going to come out in the wash.
- 7:47Yeah, I had a great saying this week.
- 7:55The war's now been named, and I think this is a beautiful name, Infinity Wars.
- 8:02It's the Infinity War.
- 8:03Because every...
- 8:05Second day, we've got some peace deal negotiated.
- 8:11It is so close.
- 8:13I can feel it.
- 8:14And then the next day, there's some drone or some ship that's been sunk.
- 8:19This is the infinity war.
- 8:20This is not going to end anytime soon.
- 8:23Not if you look at the trend over the past few months.
- 8:26And I think for the listeners out there that want to try and just protect
- 8:33themselves, I would say
- 8:35And I had this conversation today, and this is an interesting one.
- 8:36I know we time constrained, so I'm just going to do this very, very quickly.
- 8:40I ran through, you know, we've often had this conversation, but
- 8:45I looked at performances historically for the market
- 8:54when the prime rate went up and when the prime rate went down.
- 8:59And when you look at it over the past few years, Let me quickly open this because
- 9:05this is actually,
- 9:07just hold me for a second.
- 9:09I'm waiting for you.
- 9:11Yeah, just hold me.
- 9:13By the way, while you're doing that, I can tell you two things, because I have to get
- 9:15my Trump rant in as well.
- 9:17Very, very briefly, Trump said he has spoken to the supreme leader of Iran.
- 9:20No, he hasn't.
- 9:21He says he has spoken to the leader of Hezbollah.
- 9:23No, he hasn't either.
- 9:25He doesn't know why he feels as though he must say these things because they are
- 9:31pure fantasy.
- 9:33or as real people say, complete lies.
- 9:35Sorry, carry on, Skull.
- 9:38So what I've done is, and we've had this conversation for the listeners that's got
- 9:43the first time,
- 9:45I've been running a model where I look at what the JSE has done in a rising interest
- 9:50rate environment
- 9:52and what it's done in a declining interest rate environment compared to money market,
- 9:55for example.
- 9:57And it was interesting with the interest rates that actually kicked up for the
- 10:01first time last week.
- 10:03It's also exactly, it's the exact same playbook as the previous times.
- 10:07They always say this will be just the interim thing.
- 10:11The trend is downward.
- 10:13Do not worry.
- 10:14It's going to be a month or two, then we'll see the interest rates being lowered
- 10:18again.
- 10:18Well, when you look at over the past 35 years, and why I've used the 35 years,
- 10:24is that was the final stretch, or as we went into a democracy in 1994.
- 10:29That final, let's call it cycle.
- 10:32was 35 years ago.
- 10:33That's where it started.
- 10:34So 35 years ago, over the past 35, an average declining cycle,
- 10:40this is where the interest rate dropped for the first time and would go up for the
- 10:46first time again, that period between them,
- 10:48that average was 32 months.
- 10:49An average hiking cycle, 32 months.
- 10:51So by no means should anybody listening to this podcast think that this might just be
- 10:58a quick one because historically
- 11:00it was run by the 32.
- 11:02But here's the very, very interesting point.
- 11:04If you invested in the JSE only in the declining cycles,
- 11:08your average annualized return on the JSE was just over 20% per annum.
- 11:15While money market over that same period was 8%.
- 11:19If you invested in a hiking cycle, I'm going to start with the money market
- 11:25first.
- 11:27The average money market yields over that hiking cycle was, it should be higher.
- 11:31was higher, 9% per annum, while the market only 3% per annum.
- 11:36So this is a very, very important point.
- 11:40I'd just like to highlight, I'm not trying to scare the listeners out there to go and
- 11:46sell all this stock now.
- 11:48All that I'm saying is while we have infinity wars, while we're going to have
- 11:53pressure on inflation going upwards,
- 11:55there's going to be pressure on the central banks and our reserve bank to also
- 11:59kick up interest rates.
- 12:01even further.
- 12:03And there's another 25 basis points coming following the 25 basis points we've
- 12:04already had.
- 12:04The ECB is going to raise.
- 12:07The US won't raise because of political pressure and the new man Walsh going in
- 12:11there.
- 12:11But anyway, you make a very good point and we'll expand on that when we've got more
- 12:15time.
- 12:15Dollar-Rand is 16.29.
- 12:17British Pound against the Rand is 21.88.
- 12:19Euro-Rand 18.91.
- 12:21Euro-Dollar 1.16.05.
- 12:23The gold price...
- 12:25It's just doing its thing, isn't it?
- 12:26It just carries on doing this.
- 12:28It's $44.50, let's call it, down $36 an ounce platinum, down 2.5%
- 12:33to $18.94.
- 12:36Hmm.
- 12:36$13.52 is the palladium price,
- 12:39and that's down 2.9%.
- 12:43Oil, it's come off a bit, but it's still up.
- 12:47We're getting to the bottom of the barrel, literally, when it comes to stocks.
- 12:50It's $97.67 for Brent crude, up 1.75% in West Texas, up 2% to $95.68.
- 12:58The copper price down 2.2% to just over $6.50 per pound.
- 13:03South African 10-year bond, 8.485% on the close.
- 13:08The U.S.
- 13:0910-year bond is 4.492, to be precise.
- 13:14S&P 500 futures down about 0.4%, 75.91%.
- 13:20And what else have we got?
- 13:22Bitcoin.
- 13:22I was looking at that.
- 13:23It's gone down from 82,000 to its current level of 66,500.
- 13:29That's a bear market from that 82,000 recent peak to where it is now.
- 13:33Bitcoin is a bear market.
- 13:36What were your ups and downs on the JSC today, please, Skulk?
- 13:39Yeah, just very quickly, just one final say on Bitcoin.
- 13:43It's clearly not the new gold yet, because I listened to you calling the gold price
- 13:48earlier.
- 13:50And then, yeah.
- 13:52When you look at the ups and downs of markets, the market originally started the
- 13:56day pretty good,
- 13:58but with the retracement in world markets, we've seen a big retracement.
- 14:02So, Telcom today gave pretty much back what they took last week.
- 14:09That was down 7.2%, 91% as we mentioned earlier, down over 5%.
- 14:16Process, I mean, this is a bad one.
- 14:18Oh, Process done.
- 14:194.4% after the good news yesterday.
- 14:21NASPAR is down 3.8%. And Sabania Stillwater, that was down 3.9%.
- 14:28When we look at the winners for today, we had Tungela.
- 14:31That was up 3.9%.
- 14:33Sassel, naturally, the two energy players again.
- 14:37Sassel, that was up 3.7%.
- 14:40RCL, that was up 2.7%.
- 14:43And we had, what was it, Spa.
- 14:45Why?
- 14:46Can you believe it?
- 14:46Spa, that was up 2% for today.
- 14:49So give us the closing indices before we close the show, please.
- 14:54JSE also closed the day at 112,987 points.
- 14:59That was down 89 basis points.
- 15:02Resources down 77 basis points.
- 15:05The industrials down 1.3%.
- 15:08Financials down 0.58%.
- 15:10And SA Property, that was down 0.33%.
- 15:13Scott Glow is a portfolio manager at PSG Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 15:17And that was the 5 o'clock shadow.
