- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in Welcome back
- 0:16to Tabernacle talk. Hope that you're having a great
- 0:17day Today. We are in Psalm 119 and we are
- 0:22looking at the the verses, the section that all begins with the
- 0:28Hebrew letter kef. Kef.
- 0:31Sometimes in Scripture you will see especially in the Old
- 0:35Testament words that start with chapter and you should always
- 0:40pronounce those like AK. Don't pronounce it like as in
- 0:44church it is K. So the brook Careth, I had a
- 0:49friend of mine in college whose name was Kareth.
- 0:52And that was something in her life that her dad loved that
- 0:58name of. It's that water that that stream
- 1:02that Elijah is by that gives him provision from the Lord for
- 1:06about the the span of a year. And so her dad just really loved
- 1:11that, that river in Scripture. And so he named his daughter
- 1:14Kareth, but everyone always pronounced it Cherith because
- 1:19it's chapter in English. Most of the time we do that with
- 1:22a cha. And so that's just one little
- 1:25Hebrew thing that I'll give you guys for today that is neither
- 1:28here nor there. We are in Psalm 119, verses 57
- 1:32through 64, verses 57 through 64, All of Psalm 119 is
- 1:37basically Hebrew A-Z going through the Word of God and what
- 1:42it means for us. And there's one main thought
- 1:44that I want us to look at today from this portion of Scripture.
- 1:48But read with me, beginning in verse #57 Yahweh is my portion.
- 1:54I have promised to keep your words.
- 1:56I have sought Your favor with all my heart.
- 2:00Be gracious to me according to Your promise.
- 2:03I thought about my ways and turn my steps back to your decrees.
- 2:09I hurried, not hesitating to keep Your commands.
- 2:12Though the ropes of the wicked were wrapped around me, I did
- 2:15not forget Your instruction. I rise at midnight to thank you
- 2:20for Your righteous judgments. I am a friend to all who fear
- 2:24you, to those who keep your precepts.
- 2:28Yahweh, the earth is filled with your faithful love.
- 2:32Teach me your statutes well. I love this portion.
- 2:37This is just a great one that the consistent theme that I see
- 2:42running all through this is the amazing gifts that are given as
- 2:49a result of the Word of God. The gifts that are given as a
- 2:53result of the Word of God. See this beginning in verse #57
- 2:56The greatest gift of the Word of God is Yahweh, is the Lord is
- 3:02Jesus Himself. He is the greatest gift that is
- 3:06given to us through the Word of God, that we realize who He is,
- 3:10what He has done for us, what His character is.
- 3:12We understand all of it through the Word of God.
- 3:16Without the word of God we, we might be able to hear from word
- 3:21of mouth some things about Jesus and we might have some
- 3:25assumptions. The, the certainly the cross and
- 3:29the empty tomb and the resurrection.
- 3:31Those are all historical facts that even if we did not have the
- 3:36word of God, we would still know about those things.
- 3:39How can I say that? Well, you go back to the 1st
- 3:41century and before any of the stuff was written down, it was
- 3:45word of mouth. People told each other the
- 3:47testimony. Even when Paul was writing First
- 3:50Corinthians 15 about the resurrection, he says there were
- 3:53over 500 people at one time who saw Jesus after he was risen
- 3:59from the dead. And the majority of those people
- 4:01were still alive at the time that Paul was writing.
- 4:04Basically saying you can go talk to the eyewitnesses, they can
- 4:07tell you about Jesus. So we could know some things
- 4:11about God. Even Romans one would tell us
- 4:13that among other places, the heavens declare the glory of
- 4:18God. And we can understand some
- 4:20things about nature, about God's wonderful power and his eternal
- 4:25Godhead. As a result of what we see in
- 4:28nature, we can know that He's powerful, He created the world,
- 4:32and we can know that He is different than us because it had
- 4:36to be someone unlike us. It had to be someone greater and
- 4:40stronger and outside of our universe in order to create our
- 4:45universe. So even without the Word, we
- 4:47could know some things about God, but we wouldn't know Him
- 4:51relationally in the way that we do through Scripture.
- 4:55Here the phrase Yahweh is my portion.
- 4:58This is David would use this phrase, Psalm 16.
- 5:02And I know I've mentioned you guys before as one of my
- 5:04favorite Psalms. It's it's one of the ones that
- 5:06really meant a lot to me in my early adult life.
- 5:11There you have inheritance portions that were given to
- 5:15different kids. David was like the 7th or 8th
- 5:19born son of Jesse. And so as a result, he was going
- 5:22to get, you know, some tiny portion of anything.
- 5:25He wasn't like the first born that was going to get a lot of
- 5:28what his dad had. But God describes himself as
- 5:33being the portion of his people. Or you can think back to the 12
- 5:37tribes of Israel and as they go into the land, all of these
- 5:41different, you know, descendants of Jacob, named after the sons
- 5:45of Jacob, they have their portions of the land.
- 5:48But God said that the Levites, those that were part of the
- 5:53tribe of Levi, the descendants of Aaron, the family members of
- 5:58Aaron and Moses, they had not a specific portion of the land
- 6:04that was theirs. There was no portion of Israel
- 6:07that you could go to and say this is the portion of the tribe
- 6:10of Levi and all of the Levites live here.
- 6:13Instead, God said I am the portion of the tribe of Levi.
- 6:17I'm the inheritance. I am what you get out of this
- 6:21life. If God was all that you had,
- 6:24would you be happy with that? If you knew that God loved you,
- 6:28that He had a plan for you, that He had a purpose for you, that
- 6:31He would be with you each and every moment, would that make
- 6:34you satisfied or happy? Because can I tell you, friend,
- 6:38God has given Himself to you fully and completely, and He is
- 6:42your inheritance. There's a great song How He
- 6:45Loves that the the I believe it's the bridge of it.
- 6:49He is our portion and we are his prize drawn to redemption by the
- 6:55grace in his eyes. If grace is an ocean, we are all
- 6:59sinking. I just love how how poetic that
- 7:02line is there that God is our portion.
- 7:07I'll connect with this episode in the show notes and the
- 7:11description thing on on YouTube and Facebook and all that.
- 7:15There's a song by Shane and Shane written by an old Fanny
- 7:18Crosby poem called my portion. And so I'm going to link that.
- 7:23That poem will make this thought stick around in your head a lot
- 7:27more than me just going on and on about it.
- 7:29But I love this that what do we get from the word of God?
- 7:32We get that relationship with the Lord then verse 58 he says I
- 7:36have sought your favor with all my heart.
- 7:39Be gracious to me according to your promise.
- 7:41What do we get from the word of God?
- 7:43We get the favor, the grace of God through the word of God,
- 7:48that we recognize what behaviors that we can do that will invite
- 7:54grace and things that will reject grace, that God wants to
- 7:58extend his grace to us. But we're told in James four
- 8:01that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
- 8:04And so we know if I am humble before my God, I am receiving
- 8:09grace. And if I am proud, I am
- 8:11resisting the grace of God and I don't want anything to do with
- 8:15it. And so we can receive favor
- 8:17grace in that way. You can think about all of what
- 8:21people call the regular means of grace that God encourages and
- 8:26strengthens us through reading the word of God that we are able
- 8:32to experience grace, know about God's encouragement and favor
- 8:39through the word. We're able to hear about it
- 8:41through prayer, we are able to experience grace through
- 8:45regularly like worshipping with our brothers and sisters in the
- 8:48Lord. Many of us would say yes, that's
- 8:50the time when I feel most strengthened is in times of
- 8:55corporate worship and when I'm hearing preaching from the Word
- 8:57and when we are praying together over needs and over hardships.
- 9:01Yeah, I I feel God's grace, his strengthening during those
- 9:06times, even when we think about like baptism and the Lord's
- 9:10Supper that those are times we we just observed it this past
- 9:14Sunday at Tabernacle as I'm recording this.
- 9:17And I can think of very few things that so encourage and
- 9:22fortify and strengthen me spiritually as when we when we
- 9:28partake of the bread and the cup together as a body and remember
- 9:33what Jesus has done and remember that we are currently Christ's
- 9:37body and that one day we will partake of the Lord's Supper
- 9:41with him. And when I get to baptize
- 9:44someone, man, there is, there is nothing else like those that so
- 9:48encourages and invigorates me for the work of God.
- 9:53And so we can find favor in the Word.
- 9:55The Word tells us what will strengthen us in our walks with
- 9:59the Lord and what will not hinder us.
- 10:03Verse 60 I see there I hurried not hesitating to keep your
- 10:08commands here. What do we get from the word of
- 10:10God? We get an urgency and excitement
- 10:16of following the Lord. If you're lethargic in your walk
- 10:20with God, can I encourage you spend time in the Word here the
- 10:24psalmist experience that I hurried not hesitating to keep
- 10:28your commands. He says God back in verse 59, he
- 10:32says I thought about my ways and I turn my steps back to your
- 10:36decrees and he says God, when I look at my life and when I think
- 10:39about the way that you want to me to live my life, I am running
- 10:42towards your commands, your way. Your way is better.
- 10:48There's a great little song that I had just heard like the bridge
- 10:53of prior to I think earlier this week, maybe last week.
- 10:57And the song is called Make Room, Make room.
- 11:01There's a Christmas song that's labeled make room that is also
- 11:04tremendous. But this particular one is
- 11:07there's a version of it by the worship initiative.
- 11:09So the worship initiative and the song is make room and I'll
- 11:13tag it there as well. But I love just the the prayer
- 11:17of that song is God tear down like my ways of doing things,
- 11:21tear down my tradition, my religion and God, your way is
- 11:26better. Show me what I actually should
- 11:28be walking in. Don't just show me what I create
- 11:31for myself. I think it was Luther Calvin
- 11:35that said that the human heart is an idol factory.
- 11:38And all the time we, we make mountains out of mole hills and
- 11:43we think that our, our intellect, our habits are God
- 11:50ordained and perfect and that everyone else just needs to fall
- 11:53in line with everything that we think.
- 11:56When the truth is, we all need to go back to the word over and
- 11:59over and over again. God, tear down my way, give me
- 12:04your way. And so the word of God gives us
- 12:06a passion and an excitement to see my life doesn't have to be
- 12:11consistently ruined through the way that I live.
- 12:15Instead, I can rush back to the Word, I can rush back to you,
- 12:19and I can find out that your decrees and your commands are so
- 12:22much better. So first, what do we get from
- 12:26the Word of God? We get the Lord as our portion.
- 12:28We get God Himself. What do we get from the Word?
- 12:31We get to see where God's grace and His favor can be found.
- 12:36What do we get from the Word? We get to have an excitement
- 12:40about turning to God's way instead of our own.
- 12:44And then verse 62, I rise at midnight to thank you for your
- 12:48righteous judgments. What do we get from God's Word?
- 12:51A spirit of gratitude. A spirit of gratitude that we
- 12:55are able even during times when you don't really want to be
- 12:58awake, you most people don't want to be awake at midnight,
- 13:02but when you wake up at midnight when you know and love the Lord,
- 13:05it can be an opportunity for you to show gratitude for the Lord.
- 13:09And certainly in the daytime you can thank the Lord.
- 13:12Earlier today I was at the time of recording, I was over at our
- 13:17local Denny's and I love being able to just meet, share a meal
- 13:22with people in our community or from my church and that's always
- 13:26just a wonderful time of fellowship.
- 13:29But as I was starting off today, I was able to just spend some
- 13:33time actually pouring through Revelation and through Luke
- 13:38chapter 2, and I was just so grateful.
- 13:41God, thank you for your word. Thank you that it can strengthen
- 13:45me every single day because every day has new problems, but
- 13:48every day the word of God is there.
- 13:50And so I can react with joy and gratitude as a result of the
- 13:56word of God. The word of God gives me
- 13:57something to be thankful for. Verse 63 says I am a friend to
- 14:03all who fear you, to those who keep your precepts.
- 14:06What can the Word of God give us?
- 14:08The Word of God gives us friendships, godly friendships.
- 14:13And this is one of the things that I'm most thankful for.
- 14:16Yesterday, again, at the time of recording, I was able to meet
- 14:20with some local pastors who are a part of my local Baltimore
- 14:25Baptist Association. And that's just some pastors.
- 14:28We've got about 66 or so churches in the Baltimore area
- 14:33that we all get together a couple different times a year.
- 14:37And I'm on the leadership team there at the moment.
- 14:40And incredibly thankful for the brothers that some of them have
- 14:45decades of ministry experience, Others of them are are kind of
- 14:49starting off in ministry in a little bit like myself.
- 14:52And it is so great to have godly friends.
- 14:56I mentioned earlier I was at Denny's and I got to share a
- 15:00meal and talk through the Bible and pray together with some
- 15:04people from my church. And I am so thankful for the
- 15:09friendships that God gives us. Worldly friendships can be
- 15:15enjoyable. And you can have people that
- 15:18share similar political views, people that share similar
- 15:21hobbies, people that share, you know, even DNA.
- 15:24You can have your family. But there is nothing like the
- 15:27connection that is given as a result of being a fellow
- 15:30Christian, being a child of God together.
- 15:33That is the best kind of friendship that there is,
- 15:36because that's a friendship that no matter what the circumstances
- 15:39are, no matter what changes what when that's the center of the
- 15:44friendship, when the relationship with God is the
- 15:46center, that's a friendship that can last for a lifetime and will
- 15:50last into eternity. So I'm thankful for that.
- 15:53And then as we end today, verse 64, Yahweh, the earth is filled
- 15:57with your faithful love. Teach me your statutes there.
- 16:00That word, faithful love, it's said it's loving kindness.
- 16:04It's God's steadfast, covenant, loyal, faithful love, and I love
- 16:11this is not directly what the psalmist has in mind here.
- 16:14He's saying God, you're, you're faithful love is everywhere all
- 16:17over the earth. And so I can have a praise and a
- 16:21gratitude for that. But when I think about the word
- 16:23of God, it gives us a different look at the world around us.
- 16:28It gives us a different look at at nature.
- 16:30I've loved being able to be out on walks.
- 16:34Even as I was walking a little bit today, I, I was experiencing
- 16:39the cool, brisk winter air and the kind of foggy skies
- 16:44overhead. And I just said, God, thank you.
- 16:48Thank you that it's not raining crazy right now.
- 16:50I, I didn't have a, a hood or a umbrella or something at the
- 16:54moment. And so I was like, God, thank
- 16:55you that it's not raining. Thank you for the cool air.
- 16:58Thank you for the the ability to be able to walk.
- 17:03And it's just such an enriching view when we look at Scripture
- 17:07and when we look at life through the lens of God, that every
- 17:11moment is a moment where we can give thanks.
- 17:14Every moment is a moment where we can be grateful to God.
- 17:18Every moment, every person that we interact with is a possible
- 17:21new friend in the Lord. Each breath we take, every
- 17:26morning devotion and every prayer, and every time meeting
- 17:29with God's Saints is an opportunity to experience the
- 17:33grace and favor of the Lord. And at the, you know, core of it
- 17:38all, we get God Himself. There is just so much that we
- 17:44gain from being in the Word. I hope this has been an
- 17:48encouragement to you today. Looking forward to next episode
- 17:51when we're going to be in verses 65 through 72, looking at the
- 17:56verses that start with the Hebrew letter TEF.
- 17:59Thanks for tuning in. Have a wonderful day.
