- 0:25Speaker 3: the opening faceoff right now, which is one hour and
- 0:28Speaker 3: 11 minutes away from Climate Pledge Arena for the home
- 0:31Speaker 3: opener of the 2026 and 27 NHL hockey season. The
- 0:36Speaker 3: Seattle Kraken taking on the Calgary Flames. Mike Benton with
- 0:39Speaker 3: you for a special one-hour pregame leading up here to
- 0:43Speaker 3: the opening puck drop. We are live across the street

- 0:59Speaker 3: We'll look forward to seeing you once again throughout the
- 1:01Speaker 3: entire year. But what a great place to hang out
- 1:03Speaker 3: as It's a busy sports day across the Seattle landscape
- 1:06Speaker 3: with the Seahawks going on right now, not too far
- 1:08Speaker 3: south of us, and the Kraken and Flames, who will
- 1:10Speaker 3: drop the puck in about roughly one hour and ten
- 1:13Speaker 3: minutes from now. 49451 is where you can text us
- 1:17Speaker 3: on the Tacoma Dodge text line, and I want to
- 1:19Speaker 3: hear from you right now. Who do you want to
- 1:21Speaker 3: see a big game from today? 49451, text us on
- 1:25Speaker 3: the Tacoma Dodge text line. We'll get to more of
- 1:27Speaker 3: your reaction leading up here. into network coverage. We'll tap
- 1:31Speaker 3: into what happened here for the first two games of
- 1:33Speaker 3: the season. Plus also, Patrick Alvin joining us here in
- 1:37Speaker 3: just a matter of moments. Before he joins us, a
- 1:40Speaker 3: recap here from the last couple of days. The Kraken
- 1:42Speaker 3: getting off to a hot start, 6-1 win over Calgary.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Vince Dunn, Jared McCann, three-point games, and that may be
- 1:49Speaker 3: a blueprint here as far as how wild and chaotic
- 1:52Speaker 3: things can get for regular season play. Last night, a
- 1:55Speaker 3: bit of a tougher ending. 3-1 losing to Edmonton, but
- 1:58Speaker 3: the Kraken were in it from the get-go all the
- 2:01Speaker 3: way to nearly the end of it. Leon Drysaddle scoring
- 2:03Speaker 3: a go-ahead goal with 2.27 left in regulation before Connor
- 2:07Speaker 3: McDavid sealed things up with an empty net goal. But
- 2:10Speaker 3: the Kraken getting Bobby McMahon on the board. That was big.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Perhaps high expectations for him. And McMahon showing up early
- 2:18Speaker 3: on the score sheet is definitely a good sign as
- 2:21Speaker 3: the Kraken, though, taking a 3-1 loss to Edmonton. And
- 2:24Speaker 3: they come home now, trying to get back on the
- 2:26Speaker 3: winning track in front of their own home crowd here
- 2:29Speaker 3: in Seattle with a 1-1 record and facing a Flames
- 2:32Speaker 3: team who they just saw back on Thursday. And in preseason,
- 2:36Speaker 3: things got quite chaotic. What that could mean here for
- 2:39Speaker 3: the lineup, we'll get some more of that coming up
- 2:41Speaker 3: here later on in our coverage, but certainly a lot
- 2:43Speaker 3: to get to as far as top story lines here
- 2:46Speaker 3: for this team. and for this season as well. We
- 2:49Speaker 3: turn our attention because this man is prompt. Joining us
- 2:52Speaker 3: live now on set, he has had experience in front
- 2:56Speaker 3: offices from Montreal, from Pittsburgh, from Vancouver, and now making
- 3:00Speaker 3: Seattle his next stop. This is Patrick Alvin joining us,
- 3:03Speaker 3: VP and Assistant GM here for the Seattle Kraken, and
- 3:06Speaker 3: just a few months already on the job. Very well
- 3:09Speaker 3: situated here into this scene, into this city as well. Patrick,
- 3:12Speaker 3: first off, thank you very much for a few moments
- 3:14Speaker 3: here with us. What are you enjoying so far about
- 3:17Speaker 3: working in this town here and for the Saki team.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Thank you very much.
- 3:20Speaker 2: This is a great day.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Home opener, fans here, the weather is awesome. The excitement
- 3:27Speaker 4: around the team, seeing the fans showing up for training
- 3:30Speaker 4: camp and meeting a lot of new staff members and players.
- 3:35Speaker 4: It's been super exciting and refreshing for me.
- 3:38Speaker 3: And we'll get into things here as far as how
- 3:39Speaker 3: this team is building from the ground up. And Jason
- 3:41Speaker 3: Botter will use that word today. build at the end
- 3:44Speaker 3: of the regular season from this last year and it
- 3:46Speaker 3: certainly applies for how the crack and want to you
- 3:48Speaker 3: know stack their youth and help them develop here as
- 3:51Speaker 3: time marches on with them but you just mentioned everything
- 3:54Speaker 3: around the edges here from the weather to the building
- 3:57Speaker 3: to the fans as this team wants to build itself
- 4:00Speaker 3: more and more into a perennial contender how can all
- 4:04Speaker 3: of this around the edges around the arena work to
- 4:08Speaker 3: their advantage You know what?
- 4:10Speaker 4: I think that the ownership and the fans of Seattle
- 4:14Speaker 4: set this franchise up really well. As a visiting team
- 4:18Speaker 4: coming in here for years, the building was always loud
- 4:21Speaker 4: and the players always enjoyed coming in here and playing.
- 4:25Speaker 4: The city is great. I mean, they have all the
- 4:27Speaker 4: sports teams here. The support is unbelievable. I think that
- 4:31Speaker 4: the Kraken has done a good job building down in
- 4:33Speaker 4: Coachella and we're starting to see those players coming in here,
- 4:36Speaker 4: which is really exciting for the fans that, you know,
- 4:39Speaker 4: I've been tracking the players since the draft, and now
- 4:41Speaker 4: they're going to see them in the big stage here.
- 4:43Speaker 4: So we'll continue to push and excited to see some
- 4:47Speaker 4: of the young players taking the next step.
- 4:49Speaker 3: When did you realize that this job was the right
- 4:51Speaker 3: kind of fit for you?
- 4:53Speaker 4: You know what? I, you know, it feels like starting
- 4:58Speaker 4: pre-COVID or during COVID, it's been a couple of years
- 5:03Speaker 4: here in that I, you know, going in a high octane,
- 5:07Speaker 4: I felt that I needed to take a little bit
- 5:09Speaker 4: of a breather and reflect it and decompress it and
- 5:14Speaker 4: Jason kept calling me. You know, and he wanted to
- 5:18Speaker 4: give me space. He wanted me to take my time
- 5:20Speaker 4: to be ready for it. But I felt the more
- 5:24Speaker 4: I talked to Jason and what he laid it out
- 5:27Speaker 4: for the mission and what he wanted to utilize me
- 5:31Speaker 4: and the resources we have here and the excitement moving
- 5:35Speaker 4: forward and where we want to be, that I thought
- 5:38Speaker 4: that this was a great opportunity to join this organization.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Well, you know you're a wanted man when you have
- 5:43Speaker 3: the man upstairs calling you over and over and say, hey,
- 5:45Speaker 3: are you interested? Are you interested? Here is Patrick Albine
- 5:47Speaker 3: joins us live on set at Tom's Watch Bar as
- 5:50Speaker 3: we get closer and closer to the opening face-off of
- 5:52Speaker 3: the Kraken and the Calgary Flames. But dive back into
- 5:55Speaker 3: more of things. You and Jason Botterill, how far back
- 5:58Speaker 3: does this relationship go and how does he help make
- 6:01Speaker 3: a difference in you?
- 6:02Speaker 2: You know what?
- 6:03Speaker 4: I first started to work with Jason, I believe, 2007, probably,
- 6:09Speaker 4: almost 20 years ago, where he was coming in my
- 6:12Speaker 4: second year in Pittsburgh. You know, Jason has always been
- 6:16Speaker 4: a person that has been very detailed, forward thinker, always
- 6:22Speaker 4: collaborated and gave me, right away, their opportunities to.
- 6:29Speaker 4: To be around and learn from, from the office people.
- 6:32Speaker 4: I had, uh, different, uh, titles, uh, my years in Pittsburgh,
- 6:36Speaker 4: but I was always included in, in different, uh, uh,
- 6:39Speaker 4: part of the building, the hockey ops and building the team. So, uh, we,
- 6:44Speaker 4: we obviously stayed in touch over the years and see
- 6:47Speaker 4: each other on the road. And whenever I had a, uh,
- 6:49Speaker 4: you know, a question or thoughts as a general manager
- 6:54Speaker 4: in the past, I always would, uh, reach out to
- 6:56Speaker 4: Jason and, and just, uh, pick his brain, what he
- 6:59Speaker 4: thought about it. It was regarding player acquisition, path for
- 7:05Speaker 4: a player or building a staff or something. So we
- 7:08Speaker 4: obviously connected really well, and I'm here to help and
- 7:12Speaker 4: support him in any way here.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Voices can go a long, long way with forming a vision,
- 7:19Speaker 3: and this team certainly is in the middle of that.
- 7:21Speaker 3: And they've said over and over the identity is to
- 7:23Speaker 3: be a fast team, to be a relentless team, to
- 7:26Speaker 3: use skating effectively, so to speak, as a weapon. I
- 7:29Speaker 3: think to you, from looking back at this, how much
- 7:31Speaker 3: is training camp? How much is preseason? And how much
- 7:34Speaker 3: has the first couple of games told you about where
- 7:36Speaker 3: this team is going and where they also want to go?
- 7:39Speaker 4: I was really impressed with Coach Lane, how he was
- 7:42Speaker 4: running training camp here. Short camp this year, so you
- 7:46Speaker 4: have to adjust. I thought he had the players dialed in.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I thought they had the system dialed in. And, uh,
- 7:53Speaker 4: very good in delivering his message to the players to
- 7:56Speaker 4: buy in. I thought practices were fast and when this
- 8:02Speaker 4: team is playing fast, we play predictable, we play within
- 8:08Speaker 4: the system and the structure and it makes it easier
- 8:10Speaker 4: for the players. I think we have several players that
- 8:12Speaker 4: can skate really well and And we have a lot
- 8:15Speaker 4: of guys that think the game really well, too. So
- 8:18Speaker 4: we have a good combination there.
- 8:19Speaker 3: And I think to that point, two games, 1-0-1. It
- 8:22Speaker 3: is early in the season, but impressive as it gets
- 8:25Speaker 3: for the win at Calgary. And this team gets so
- 8:27Speaker 3: close at Edmonton as well last night. Special teams look great.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Bobby McMahon already producing, just like he picked up right
- 8:33Speaker 3: where he left off last year. The goalies look great
- 8:36Speaker 3: as well. What's your takeaway with how the personnel and
- 8:39Speaker 3: coaching are moving this along here cohesively?
- 8:42Speaker 4: Yeah, two things. just what you said, I think in
- 8:44Speaker 4: order to be successful in the league today, special teams
- 8:47Speaker 4: need to be about average. So far, I've been impressed
- 8:51Speaker 4: with how the coaches have been running the special teams.
- 8:55Speaker 4: The players have been bought in. The players understand to
- 8:58Speaker 4: execute it. I think our power play, it's going to be,
- 9:03Speaker 4: it's going to take a little bit of time here
- 9:04Speaker 4: with getting more touches as the training camp was a
- 9:08Speaker 4: little bit shorter, but definitely intriguing players on the two
- 9:12Speaker 4: units we have, and we're sipping the puck around pretty
- 9:16Speaker 4: good here, so I think they definitely have taken the
- 9:21Speaker 4: knowledge from last year and want to take a step forward,
- 9:26Speaker 4: and both of us have played excellent in both games.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Youth is also a big part of this conversation with
- 9:32Speaker 3: this team's direction, and I think a lot walked away
- 9:34Speaker 3: from watching and listening to Thursday night's game, just marveled
- 9:37Speaker 3: at Just how much Ryan Winterton, Berkley Catton, even Shane
- 9:41Speaker 3: Wright were creating. And then we go to the young
- 9:43Speaker 3: kids as well in Coachella Valley, where you said that
- 9:46Speaker 3: you'll have your eye on them. Jagger-Ferkus and Yanni Newman,
- 9:49Speaker 3: not too shabby so far. Newman had a hat trick
- 9:51Speaker 3: last night. They both have six points in two games.
- 9:54Speaker 3: You mentioned before, as part of the core of this team,
- 9:57Speaker 3: you have to build here through the draft. the strength
- 10:00Speaker 3: and Coachella Valley. Apparently it's growing as far as how
- 10:03Speaker 3: they can produce. Ultimately, what's the vision with how that
- 10:07Speaker 3: team can also help prep these players to get ready
- 10:09Speaker 3: here for this level?
- 10:10Speaker 4: Well, first and foremost, I was really impressed with the
- 10:13Speaker 4: players you mentioned and a couple other ones, uh, Molgaard, Nelson, Jugnut,
- 10:20Speaker 4: Coco the goalie. I think they, what my experience coming
- 10:25Speaker 4: from Pittsburgh and Vancouver, I think those guys grow together
- 10:29Speaker 4: and they're kind of forming their next core and how
- 10:35Speaker 4: much it means to be a Kraken. When you've been
- 10:38Speaker 4: in the organization, you've been drafted, you've been developed down
- 10:41Speaker 4: in Coachella and now you're coming up as a almost
- 10:44Speaker 4: like a pack mentality and you feel comfortable. You understand
- 10:47Speaker 4: what it takes and the Kraken logo means something for
- 10:50Speaker 4: the players too. Those particular players you mentioned here, I
- 10:55Speaker 4: think any one of them today can come up and
- 10:58Speaker 4: play games for us. Our job is to set them
- 11:02Speaker 4: up to be full-time NHL players. So it's a fine
- 11:06Speaker 4: balance where you don't want to bring up a player
- 11:08Speaker 4: too early. You want to make sure... in a perfect well,
- 11:11Speaker 4: in a perfect way, you can almost overcook them down there.
- 11:14Speaker 4: So they, you build them up with the confidence, strength,
- 11:17Speaker 4: and also making sure they got enough puck, puck touches to,
- 11:21Speaker 4: to really hit their ceilings. But, uh, I'm excited. I'm
- 11:25Speaker 4: going to head down to Coachella here next weekend, and
- 11:29Speaker 4: I'm excited to be with Troy Boldy and the staff
- 11:33Speaker 4: and watch the young players there.
- 11:34Speaker 3: I heard you're a big golf guy also.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Is that right? I wouldn't say big one, but I'm
- 11:38Speaker 4: a pretty good 17er.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yeah, if you're picking the litter out there as far
- 11:40Speaker 3: as golf courses are concerned, I'll tell you.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:43Speaker 3: One of my favorite phrases was from Harvey Peanut, the
- 11:46Speaker 3: old golf instructor, if you play golf, you're my friend.
- 11:48Speaker 3: So that's a big, big thing for me. You're going
- 11:50Speaker 3: to have a lot of enjoyment out there hitting the
- 11:52Speaker 3: links of it. I guess whenever you can. But Patrick
- 11:55Speaker 3: Albin joining us here. I want to get back to
- 11:58Speaker 3: the kids in Coachella Valley because you mentioned. You know,
- 12:01Speaker 3: some teams can maybe have a tendency to kind of
- 12:03Speaker 3: overcook these kids, and you have to give them the
- 12:05Speaker 3: right kind of puck touches. Hockey players, from what we've learned,
- 12:09Speaker 3: can be very goal-oriented creatures. No one likes getting cut.
- 12:12Speaker 3: So when it comes to the conversation of maybe not
- 12:16Speaker 3: now but soon, what's the biggest key to handling those
- 12:20Speaker 3: conversations with them and giving them the roadmap that they
- 12:22Speaker 3: need to succeed before coming back here?
- 12:25Speaker 4: I believe in trust. I think when you can establish
- 12:28Speaker 4: a trust from Corey Murphy, the director of player development
- 12:32Speaker 4: and his staff to the young players, get to know
- 12:35Speaker 4: the young players before we get them into CV really help.
- 12:40Speaker 4: And I think the open line and direct communication, where
- 12:44Speaker 4: we see them and where we want them to be,
- 12:48Speaker 4: we don't want to bring them up to have short-term success.
- 12:51Speaker 4: We don't want to put anybody in a position to fail.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Our job as an organization is to put every single
- 12:57Speaker 4: kid in a position to succeed. And we all know
- 13:00Speaker 4: that National Hockey League is the best league in the
- 13:03Speaker 4: world and it's hard. You've got to be mentally ready
- 13:07Speaker 4: and prepared for it as long as with the physicality.
- 13:10Speaker 4: So I think there is no rush to get there.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Once you get there, we want to make sure you stay.
- 13:16Speaker 3: When it comes to front office transactions and finding a
- 13:19Speaker 3: way to help out the big club immediately, there's a
- 13:21Speaker 3: lot that goes into it. Sometimes we hear, though, that
- 13:24Speaker 3: you can have conversations with the coaching staff, and that
- 13:27Speaker 3: might kind of be a big part of the equation.
- 13:29Speaker 3: So as this team looks at the market, how much
- 13:32Speaker 3: is communication so important that the coaches have to understand
- 13:35Speaker 3: what their needs are and how player A or player
- 13:38Speaker 3: B could fit down in the future?
- 13:41Speaker 4: Well, as a former GM now, I can sit back
- 13:45Speaker 4: and just support Jason and Lane, and I see their
- 13:49Speaker 4: interaction daily, and I think that's the way you're setting
- 13:53Speaker 4: yourself up for success. The interaction between the general manager
- 13:57Speaker 4: and the coach, in my opinion, is very important for
- 14:00Speaker 4: the vision of the franchise, and I see how close
- 14:06Speaker 4: they work together and how they communicate and understand each other,
- 14:09Speaker 4: and we're where we want this team to be. So
- 14:13Speaker 4: the Kraken is in a really good position there with
- 14:15Speaker 4: Jason Botterell and Coach Lambert working together.
- 14:19Speaker 3: We're about one month out here from going to Finland.
- 14:21Speaker 3: What's the part that you're looking forward to the most
- 14:22Speaker 3: on that trip?
- 14:25Speaker 2: You know what?
- 14:25Speaker 4: It's always great to grow the brand of hockey. And
- 14:29Speaker 4: for the Europeans to be able to watch NHL hockey,
- 14:32Speaker 4: it's great. You know, for us going over there, um,
- 14:37Speaker 4: as a team to have a chance to bond and, and, uh,
- 14:40Speaker 4: be together. Uh, I guess we're going to try to
- 14:43Speaker 4: finish sauna, uh, try to be, I've heard a lot
- 14:46Speaker 4: about the sauna out there. I think we have a
- 14:49Speaker 4: pretty good one here too, but, but it's different over there. And,
- 14:52Speaker 4: and obviously you see a different culture and try some
- 14:54Speaker 4: different foods. So, I'm sure the players are excited about
- 14:58Speaker 4: it too.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Well, let the countdown begin. In the meantime, a lot
- 15:01Speaker 3: of folks are waiting here in anticipation for the countdown
- 15:04Speaker 3: to opening face-off. We've almost made it. It's almost here,
- 15:07Speaker 3: but appreciate the insight, Patrick.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Thank you very much here.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Thank you for joining us. That's Patrick Alvin joining us
- 15:12Speaker 3: once again here on Talkin' Kraken. We are live at
- 15:15Speaker 3: Tom's Watch Park, countdown to opening face-off. Back in a
- 15:18Speaker 3: bit with more on 93.3 KJRFM. All right, faceoff is
- 15:30Speaker 3: coming up in about 54 minutes for the Seattle Kraken
- 15:32Speaker 3: and the Calgary Flames as you have made it. The
- 15:34Speaker 3: six-month wait here for home games once again in the
- 15:37Speaker 3: deep is about to come to an end. Mike Benton
- 15:40Speaker 3: again with you live right back here at Tom's Watch Bar.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Great place to hang out throughout the entire season. Once again,
- 15:46Speaker 3: for a majority of... Our home games, post-game coverage, we're
- 15:50Speaker 3: right back here. If you're around the area, don't go home.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Make one trek. Come on in. Stop on in. Grab
- 15:56Speaker 3: a beverage. Grab a burger. Say hello and enjoy the scene.
- 16:00Speaker 3: It is wall-to-wall packed right now with the Seattle sports
- 16:03Speaker 3: landscape absolutely hopping here before the opening faceoff. And a
- 16:06Speaker 3: lot of that has to do with what's going on
- 16:08Speaker 3: between the Seahawks and the Chargers right now. So, again,
- 16:11Speaker 3: you're getting your fill as far as Seattle sports going.
- 16:14Speaker 3: for this entire day as we're getting set here for
- 16:16Speaker 3: the opening face-off. Big thanks once again to Patrick Alveen
- 16:19Speaker 3: for joining us a few moments ago. That conversation, you can,
- 16:22Speaker 3: by the way, catch that via the iHeartRadio app by
- 16:25Speaker 3: finding the Kraken Audio Network. And once again, just sign
- 16:28Speaker 3: up for free to get it at sportsradiokjr.com. We're getting
- 16:32Speaker 3: closer here to diving into more about this game, this team,
- 16:36Speaker 3: the lineup and whatnot. For the meantime, we're going to
- 16:39Speaker 3: dive into some reaction. 49451 via the Tacoma Dodge text line,
- 16:43Speaker 3: your place to hit us up here every game, postgame
- 16:47Speaker 3: as well, for your reaction. 49451, we are the show
- 16:50Speaker 3: for community, we are the show for reaction, and we
- 16:53Speaker 3: certainly want your voice here to be heard. So again, 49451.
- 16:57Speaker 3: is the place here to get at us each and
- 16:59Speaker 3: every postgame. As far as pregame matters is concerned, I
- 17:03Speaker 3: asked you once again about a few moments ago, who's
- 17:06Speaker 3: the player that you want to see the biggest game
- 17:08Speaker 3: from today on the Kraken?
- 17:10Speaker 6: 49451.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Text us right now, 49451. From the 619, it's Berkley Catton,
- 17:16Speaker 3: and he says he needs to shoot the puck more.
- 17:18Speaker 3: He is the best shooter here on this entire line.
- 17:21Speaker 3: That from Berkley. the 619. I think to your point
- 17:24Speaker 3: on that, Berkley Catton's a guy who's going to have
- 17:26Speaker 3: to really rely on his line mates to be in
- 17:29Speaker 3: the right position. At center, he's more of a playmaker.
- 17:32Speaker 3: He can certainly shoot, but if he has an open look,
- 17:35Speaker 3: you cannot pass open shots, and that maybe at times
- 17:38Speaker 3: has played the crack in a little bit in the
- 17:40Speaker 3: recent years, passing up quality shot opportunities, but Catton in
- 17:44Speaker 3: his position, he is a distributor and certainly Assuming that
- 17:48Speaker 3: things are basically the same as the last two games,
- 17:51Speaker 3: it could be him with Ryan Winterton and Shane Wright
- 17:54Speaker 3: as well on the opposite wing. So part of Catton's game,
- 17:57Speaker 3: tracking back a full 200 feet defensively and being a
- 18:00Speaker 3: facilitator for those guys who can certainly make a big,
- 18:03Speaker 3: big difference, especially Wright and his shot as well. 49451
- 18:08Speaker 3: Texas here on the Tacoma Dodge text line. I did
- 18:10Speaker 3: get some reaction also last night via Twitter at Benton
- 18:13Speaker 3: underscore Mike, and despite the 3-1 loss the Kraken had
- 18:16Speaker 3: to the Edmonton Oilers, the question was put out, what
- 18:19Speaker 3: did you make out of the execution and also the effort?
- 18:24Speaker 3: And we had a lot of pan responses here across
- 18:27Speaker 3: the board because, you know, there is some recognition that
- 18:30Speaker 3: it is early in this regular season and you can't
- 18:32Speaker 3: expect perfection out of game two of 84. On top
- 18:37Speaker 3: of that, you're going into a lion's den in facing
- 18:39Speaker 3: Edmonton at Rogers Place. And that's a place where it
- 18:42Speaker 3: has been nearly darn impossible to win and except for
- 18:45Speaker 3: just one time in franchise history. That was back in 2022. 23,
- 18:50Speaker 3: but the way that the Oilers can dispatch McDavid, they
- 18:53Speaker 3: can dispatch Dreisaitl, it is a tough matchup over and
- 18:57Speaker 3: over and over, and the Kraken certainly had their handful,
- 18:59Speaker 3: so to get to a point where that game was 1-1,
- 19:02Speaker 3: you take it as a win, and the Kraken walked
- 19:05Speaker 3: away from That game last night, despite losing 3-1 on
- 19:09Speaker 3: a couple of late goals, they felt fine about their
- 19:12Speaker 3: play at 5-on-5, and the numbers certainly say so. Example,
- 19:16Speaker 3: he had only 14 shots allowed in the first two
- 19:18Speaker 3: periods of play. They only allowed eight shots to Edmonton
- 19:22Speaker 3: at 5-on-5 through two periods. So for a team in
- 19:26Speaker 3: the Oilers who can certainly fill the net with guys
- 19:29Speaker 3: like McDavid, guys like Drysaddle, who are global superstars, and
- 19:33Speaker 3: maybe they are top-heavy, but yet They found no problems
- 19:38Speaker 3: hanging five goals on the Canucks one night and nine
- 19:41Speaker 3: on the very next night as well. So maybe you
- 19:43Speaker 3: had their heads spinning a bit in the room thinking, hey,
- 19:46Speaker 3: what's going on a little bit right now? So to
- 19:48Speaker 3: hold them to 1-1 that late. not too shabby for
- 19:51Speaker 3: game two of 84. And that's kind of the mindset
- 19:53Speaker 3: the Kraken have to have heading into the back end
- 19:56Speaker 3: of back to back here for today in game three
- 19:59Speaker 3: of 84. A short memory, but yet a little bit
- 20:03Speaker 3: of a recognition that your game is right now coming
- 20:06Speaker 3: along as it should be. And so certainly that was
- 20:09Speaker 3: a big help. on the Kraken side. Steven on Twitter
- 20:12Speaker 3: saying it was hard fought, but clearly Edmonton had the
- 20:14Speaker 3: better legs near the end. A bit of bad luck
- 20:17Speaker 3: in that bounce that went to the right player at
- 20:19Speaker 3: the right time. That was certainly Leon Dreisaitl who did
- 20:22Speaker 3: just that. Jim on Twitter saying it was mildly encouraging,
- 20:26Speaker 3: just appreciated that they didn't really get blown out of
- 20:28Speaker 3: that game. Robbie as well checking in saying that the
- 20:32Speaker 3: Kraken effort and execution, it was excellent. They battled very,
- 20:35Speaker 3: very hard last night. We get one here from the
- 20:39Speaker 3: handle SundanceKid1701. It was pretty competitive and the Kraken could
- 20:44Speaker 3: have easily run that one or won that one as well.
- 20:48Speaker 3: SoCal Redlegs offers that. The third period was a bit
- 20:50Speaker 3: sloppy as far as the passing game. You were trying
- 20:53Speaker 3: to find covered guys when a lot of the time
- 20:55Speaker 3: they could have just held on to the puck. Overall though,
- 20:57Speaker 3: good game. Fought hard and very, very, very impressed as
- 21:01Speaker 3: well with Philip Grubauer. So this is what we do
- 21:05Speaker 3: all season long on Talkin' Kraken. We're here for your reaction.
- 21:08Speaker 3: 49451 Tacoma Dosh text line. We'll also take your reaction
- 21:11Speaker 3: here via Twitter. One more text I did want to
- 21:14Speaker 3: get to here from the 206. Just saying that he's
- 21:18Speaker 3: looking at seeing if Ryan Winterton can make a big
- 21:20Speaker 3: difference here on Berkeley Catton's line. Certainly we see the
- 21:24Speaker 3: benefits of that and how Catton can certainly dish the puck.
- 21:28Speaker 3: As far as the Kraken and Calgary, second matchup already
- 21:32Speaker 3: since Thursday. It's going to be a lot of fun
- 21:34Speaker 3: to see this game evolve because you're seeing two teams
- 21:37Speaker 3: who are very, very familiar with each other. And the
- 21:41Speaker 3: fact that you had a lot of bad blood maybe shed,
- 21:45Speaker 3: so to speak, back in preseason play, depending upon who
- 21:48Speaker 3: suits up. We'll confirm that coming up here a little
- 21:50Speaker 3: bit in our pregame show coverage as that rolls along.
- 21:54Speaker 3: There's a potential that fireworks could be brewing. The Kraken
- 21:57Speaker 3: are seeing a Calgary team that, again, is 0-2. They're
- 22:01Speaker 3: desperate for a win as well. They haven't done so,
- 22:04Speaker 3: and yet we hear over and over and over, hockey
- 22:07Speaker 3: players have very, very long memories as far as the opponents.
- 22:13Speaker 3: So it will be certainly interesting here in game three
- 22:16Speaker 3: of this series of the opening faceoff coming up in
- 22:18Speaker 3: about roughly two 47 minutes from now. We'll get you
- 22:21Speaker 3: caught up on everything, but again, a big thanks to
- 22:24Speaker 3: Patrick Alveen for joining us. We're back in a bit
- 22:26Speaker 3: with more right here on your home of the Kraken,
- 22:28Speaker 3: 93.3 KJRFM.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Welcome to Seattle Kraken Hockey on the Global Credit Union
- 22:37Speaker 1: Kraken Audio Network. Brought to you by Coors Light, your
- 22:41Speaker 1: Western Washington Toyota dealers, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, Muckleshoot Casino Resort,
- 22:48Speaker 1: by Liuna, Symetra, and by McDonald's.
- 22:53Speaker 7: The Seattle Kraken overcame a slow start last night in Edmonton,
- 22:58Speaker 7: however fell victim to some unfortunate Oilers puck luck late
- 23:02Speaker 7: in the third to split their.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Season opening road trip.
- 23:05Speaker 7: Bobby McMahon tied the game at one midway through the second,
- 23:08Speaker 7: however late in the third Leon Dreisaitl found the puck
- 23:12Speaker 7: in the slot after an errant ricochet and scored and
- 23:16Speaker 7: Connor McDavid added the empty netter to seal the 3-1
- 23:19Speaker 7: Oiler win. This afternoon after a 174 day absence, the
- 23:25Speaker 7: Kraken are back under our roof for their home opener
- 23:29Speaker 7: against the Calgary Flames team that was doused by Seattle
- 23:33Speaker 7: on Thursday 6-1 in their home opener and are coming
- 23:37Speaker 7: off of a 4-1 loss not 24 hours ago up
- 23:41Speaker 7: the road in Vancouver.
- 23:43Speaker 8: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
- 23:45Speaker 7: Happy Sunday. Happy opening day. Welcome back inside of Climate
- 23:50Speaker 7: Pledge Arena. Alongside Big Al Kaniski, I am Everett Fitzhugh.
- 23:53Speaker 7: This is Seattle Kraken Hockey on the Global Credit Union
- 23:57Speaker 7: Kraken Audio Network. You are listening to the pregame show
- 24:00Speaker 7: served up by Frost Brew Coors Light, Juice Chill. Partner,
- 24:03Speaker 7: it was a 3-1 loss last night in Edmonton. The
- 24:06Speaker 7: Kraken looked good in that game. They overcame a slow
- 24:10Speaker 7: start in the first period, but unfortunately for Seattle, the
- 24:14Speaker 7: speed of McDavid and Dreisaitl may be a little bit
- 24:17Speaker 7: too much for the Kraken to handle.
- 24:19Speaker 9: Well, they had their hands full with them all night,
- 24:20Speaker 9: and I thought they did a pretty good job holding
- 24:23Speaker 9: them at bay. It wasn't until late in the game,
- 24:25Speaker 9: a lucky bounce ended up on Dreisel's stick that he
- 24:28Speaker 9: was able to really have an impact on the outcome
- 24:30Speaker 9: of the game. But I thought defensively they played really
- 24:33Speaker 9: well last night.
- 24:33Speaker 7: I was going to say normally those games have a
- 24:36Speaker 7: tendency to get a little squirrely. You look at the
- 24:39Speaker 7: first couple games, the Oilers and Canucks played against each other.
- 24:42Speaker 7: Edmonton losing 6-5 in overtime in the opener. Then they
- 24:46Speaker 7: won on Thursday by a 9-7 score in a game
- 24:50Speaker 7: in which they led 8-2 at one point. So Defense
- 24:53Speaker 7: was optional in their first two games before Seattle.
- 24:56Speaker 2: It was a.
- 24:57Speaker 7: Nice change of pace compared to the last handful of
- 24:59Speaker 7: games with the Oilers to see the crack and really
- 25:02Speaker 7: only limiting the Oilers to two goals, not including that
- 25:05Speaker 7: third empty netter.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Well, if you look at the first two games, three
- 25:08Speaker 2: goals over the first two games.
- 25:09Speaker 9: So clearly, not only the defensive Lane Lambert structure is working,
- 25:13Speaker 9: but also goaltending. We've seen both goaltenders now. They both
- 25:16Speaker 9: had save percentages above 900 in those games. And Joey
- 25:20Speaker 9: Decord's known for having really good games and back-to-back games
- 25:24Speaker 9: as well, so I'm.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Looking forward to seeing what he does tonight.
- 25:26Speaker 7: Across the red line, the Calgary Flames have not gotten
- 25:29Speaker 7: off to the start this season that they have won it.
- 25:31Speaker 7: They lost 6-1 Thursday at home to the Seattle Kraken.
- 25:34Speaker 7: Then last night, a 4-1 loss in Vancouver.
- 25:37Speaker 8: They have now scored 10-2, partner, in their first two games.
- 25:41Speaker 7: We know it's a rebuilding year for them, but Ryan Hushka,
- 25:44Speaker 7: you and I popped into the Flames post-game press conference.
- 25:47Speaker 7: He was not happy about that on Thursday, and I
- 25:49Speaker 7: have to imagine more of the same here tonight. This
- 25:51Speaker 7: is a Flames team that is hungry here tonight, and
- 25:54Speaker 7: the Kraken can ill afford to take them lightly.
- 25:57Speaker 9: No, absolutely, and special teams will come into play tonight,
- 26:00Speaker 9: just like they have the first two games. I thought
- 26:02Speaker 9: those have been good for the Kraken as well, but
- 26:04Speaker 9: Calgary's penalty kills at 90% right now. Seattle's power play
- 26:08Speaker 9: is surging in the high 20s, 28.6%, so something's got
- 26:12Speaker 9: to give there, and it'll be a big test tonight
- 26:14Speaker 9: for the Kraken.
- 26:14Speaker 7: Kraken played two in a row on the road. Now
- 26:17Speaker 7: they're back for their first of two in a row
- 26:19Speaker 7: at home. Welcome back to Seattle. Year six under our
- 26:23Speaker 7: roof here at Climate Pledge Arena. It's the Kraken and
- 26:26Speaker 7: the Calgary Flames coming up in a matter of moments.

- 30:00Speaker 3: can join us at some point here throughout the day
- 30:02Speaker 3: as the Kraken right now entering this home opener, one
- 30:05Speaker 3: and one looking for their second straight home opening win.
- 30:08Speaker 3: They have won. carried a 1-4 record in that situation
- 30:12Speaker 3: into this contest, and they are playing in their second
- 30:15Speaker 3: game back-to-backs for the first time this season. Calgary's also
- 30:19Speaker 3: doing likewise. They come in, though, with an 0-2 record,
- 30:22Speaker 3: and already this matchup marking number two of the regular season.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Last night in Edmonton for the Kraken, we go here
- 30:30Speaker 3: to a face who could be a major part of
- 30:32Speaker 3: their offense, and he found pay dirt at the right time.
- 30:39Speaker 7: Here's McCann, his shot off the stick of Ekholm almost
- 30:42Speaker 7: slid in as he caught Levi leaning.
- 30:45Speaker 8: Now the Kraken get it.
- 30:46Speaker 4: They score!
- 30:48Speaker 7: Bobby McMahon under the crossbar, in and out, and the
- 30:52Speaker 7: Kraken tie the game on the power play.
- 30:55Speaker 8: 10-54 left here in the second.
- 30:57Speaker 2: 1-1, we're even.
- 30:58Speaker 9: But once again, it's Jordan Eberle with some great work
- 31:01Speaker 9: below the goal line. Chandler Stephenson pokes the puck down over.
- 31:04Speaker 9: He finds Bobby McMahon. Bottom circles, right side. He puts
- 31:08Speaker 9: it in the same place Edmonton scored their first goal.
- 31:10Speaker 9: This game's tied at one.
- 31:12Speaker 3: The Kraken had to hang on at some points of
- 31:14Speaker 3: last night, and that goal came in timely fashion as
- 31:17Speaker 3: the Kraken also had Jordan Eberle earn his 450th career
- 31:21Speaker 3: NHL assist on that play. And for a game that
- 31:24Speaker 3: could have easily gotten out of hand after the first period,
- 31:27Speaker 3: they found a way to fight back and took it
- 31:29Speaker 3: all the way nearly down to the end. But Edmonton
- 31:31Speaker 3: got two late goals to pull away. Leon Dreistadl had
- 31:35Speaker 3: the go-ahead goal with 2.27 left in regulation. Connor McDavid
- 31:38Speaker 3: sealing things up.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Who else?
- 31:40Speaker 3: With an empty net goal, the Kraken fell 3-1 in
- 31:44Speaker 3: that contest. A spike getting out of a bumpy first
- 31:47Speaker 3: period where they were shorthanded three times for sticking fractions.
- 31:51Speaker 3: But nonetheless, a penalty kill was great. Philip Grubauer was great.
- 31:54Speaker 3: But it's all moral victories from that game. But the
- 31:56Speaker 3: Kraken now have to wait until November 27th to beat
- 32:01Speaker 3: Edmonton in Edmonton for the first time since then. 2023
- 32:05Speaker 3: so players have to have short memories as far as
- 32:07Speaker 3: results are concerned and that takes a cracking into this
- 32:09Speaker 3: evening here where part of the meaning of this game
- 32:12Speaker 3: is about making a great impression it is their first
- 32:15Speaker 3: official home game in six months and mostly you get
- 32:18Speaker 3: a lineup back here that returns except for Bobby McMahon
- 32:21Speaker 3: of course added late from last season and the question
- 32:24Speaker 3: bears can he elevate his production Mackie Samaskevich also a
- 32:27Speaker 3: big part of this. Can he make a first impression?
- 32:30Speaker 3: And presuming that Curtis Douglas does suit up, he could
- 32:33Speaker 3: be an impact as far as a physical element here
- 32:37Speaker 3: for this game because Calgary can certainly play physical. For
- 32:41Speaker 3: the Kraken, it's also about playing within their means for
- 32:43Speaker 3: a back-to-back situation. today marking the end of the first
- 32:47Speaker 3: of 13 back-to-backs for this entire season. Last year, they
- 32:51Speaker 3: weren't too bad, getting 12 of a possible 26 points
- 32:55Speaker 3: in 13 games, which was a big step up from
- 32:58Speaker 3: going 0-12 in back-to-backs. from the previous season. So the
- 33:02Speaker 3: eye could be here on Vince Dunn and Adam Larson.
- 33:04Speaker 3: That pairing, they both got over 23 minutes of ice
- 33:07Speaker 3: time last night. Brandon Montour also 23-21 of ice time.
- 33:11Speaker 3: And also the penalty kill could have an impact on
- 33:14Speaker 3: that because Montour played nearly three minutes shorthanded in that game.
- 33:18Speaker 3: Adam Larson. over four minutes as well. And finally, it's
- 33:21Speaker 3: about the awareness here of the opposition because the Flames
- 33:24Speaker 3: come in aching for their first win. The Kraken beat
- 33:27Speaker 3: them on the ice 6-1, but in these kinds of matchups,
- 33:30Speaker 3: you never know what's going to happen, and the Kraken
- 33:32Speaker 3: have found themselves pretty banged up recently coming out. these
- 33:37Speaker 3: kinds of games because you go back to preseason Mackie
- 33:40Speaker 3: Samaskevich knocked out of the game on a clean hit
- 33:42Speaker 3: but a high one toward the shoulder he was knocked
- 33:45Speaker 3: out for the remainder of the preseason finally debuted last
- 33:48Speaker 3: night but then also Jacob Melanson didn't survive the season
- 33:52Speaker 3: opener he is week to week as well so could
- 33:55Speaker 3: there be a powder keg that could be in tap
- 33:57Speaker 3: here for this game waiting to erupt We'll have to
- 34:00Speaker 3: wait and see. First off, your Kraken storylines begin with
- 34:03Speaker 3: Chandler Stevenson and his impact. He is aiming for a
- 34:06Speaker 3: three-game point streak to begin the season. He had a
- 34:09Speaker 3: highlight reel goal in the first game against Calgary that
- 34:11Speaker 3: put the game away Thursday, and against the Flames, he
- 34:14Speaker 3: carries points in five consecutive games, and he could try
- 34:17Speaker 3: to make an impact here with Bobby McMahon and Jordan Eberle.
- 34:21Speaker 3: as his line mates. Secondly, his special teams and for
- 34:24Speaker 3: the power play, how many chances could they earn today?
- 34:27Speaker 3: Because they're facing a Flames team who have taken a
- 34:30Speaker 3: ton of penalties. And the Kraken right now, two of
- 34:33Speaker 3: seven on the man advantage to begin the regular season.
- 34:36Speaker 3: The penalty kill on the flip side, no issues so far.
- 34:40Speaker 3: They are four for four. And in goal, it'll be
- 34:42Speaker 3: Joey Decord once again, who came within four minutes of
- 34:45Speaker 3: a shutout Thursday. And against Calgary, 4-2-2 record with a
- 34:50Speaker 3: 9-1-8 save percentage. This puck handling ability could come in
- 34:53Speaker 3: handy here for this game. Let's hear more on the
- 34:55Speaker 3: Kraken side. And Captain Jordan Eberle said one lesson to
- 34:58Speaker 3: take away was for the Kraken... Don't get too down
- 35:01Speaker 3: from the previous night.
- 35:03Speaker 16: Second period, I thought we were, you know, good. Third period,
- 35:05Speaker 16: we were good.
- 35:06Speaker 17: Obviously, they get the bounce there, but we had our
- 35:08Speaker 17: opportunities before that. I had one back door. I think
- 35:11Speaker 17: Bobby had one on the power play. Yeah, I think,
- 35:15Speaker 17: you know, you give teams respect and too much room,
- 35:18Speaker 17: you know, they're going to create chances like they did
- 35:20Speaker 17: in the first and then, you know, cause you to
- 35:22Speaker 17: take some penalties and then we were kind of on
- 35:23Speaker 17: our heels. But, you know, I liked our response after that.
- 35:26Speaker 16: I think we got it.
- 35:27Speaker 17: You know, continue to keep building. That's what, you know,
- 35:29Speaker 17: this season, I think I said it yesterday, it's a marathon,
- 35:32Speaker 17: it's not a sprint. So we just keep building here
- 35:34Speaker 17: and get some confidence and keep rolling.
- 35:37Speaker 3: And to that point, Eberle said you can't overreact here
- 35:39Speaker 3: to game two of 84. And there is a feel
- 35:42Speaker 3: the Kraken right now are going the right way.
- 35:44Speaker 16: We can play with anybody. We just got to believe
- 35:46Speaker 16: it in ourselves. Just keep building.
- 35:48Speaker 17: You know, that's what this season is all about. Just
- 35:51Speaker 17: building growth and just everyone, you know, one step at
- 35:55Speaker 17: a time here. You know, you're not going to win
- 35:56Speaker 17: every hockey game. The biggest thing is you want to
- 35:58Speaker 17: leave games, you know, with an impression on other teams
- 36:00Speaker 17: that these guys are good.
- 36:01Speaker 16: I thought we did that tonight. So it's a matter
- 36:04Speaker 16: of doing that every single night. It's consistency. It's hard
- 36:06Speaker 16: to do, but we're up for it.
- 36:09Speaker 3: The way the lineup is shaken up right now, it
- 36:11Speaker 3: looks as if it could be Viliato Vinen in making
- 36:14Speaker 3: his season debut. Don't forget he was involved in that
- 36:16Speaker 3: tussle back in the preseason with Brennan Offman. given an
- 36:21Speaker 3: aggressor penalty as far as his altercation, then fined over
- 36:25Speaker 3: $ 2, 000 after that. But Ottobinen did not play first two games.
- 36:28Speaker 3: It looks like he could be suiting up here for tonight,
- 36:32Speaker 3: and it appears Curtis Douglas, Ben Myers could be game-time
- 36:34Speaker 3: decisions on that side with Cale Fleury and Josh Mahura
- 36:38Speaker 3: as scratches, while Jacob Melanson and Jake O'Brien sit right
- 36:41Speaker 3: now out week to week. We're back in a bit
- 36:44Speaker 3: with a look at the Flames. You're listening to the
- 36:46Speaker 3: Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network.

- 39:33Speaker 3: carpet up. Everett Fitzhugh absolutely nailed it with MC duties
- 39:37Speaker 3: with the players arriving here a while ago. He and
- 39:40Speaker 3: Al Koniski have our three keys coming up. in just
- 39:43Speaker 3: a matter of moments here for this one. But time
- 39:45Speaker 3: now for a look at Calgary, and they are off
- 39:47Speaker 3: to a turbulent start. No surprise at 0-2 with a
- 39:50Speaker 3: very young squad. Goals against, 10 already allowed in two games.
- 39:55Speaker 3: Goals for, just two scored as well in the first
- 39:58Speaker 3: two games. Penalties have been a bit of an issue,
- 40:00Speaker 3: needless to say. They have taken 12 minor penalty infractions
- 40:04Speaker 3: in two games, so they've had issues of staying out
- 40:06Speaker 3: of the box and issues already of keeping the puck
- 40:10Speaker 3: out of their own net. Last evening... Madders reared an
- 40:13Speaker 3: ugly head once again when the Flames lost 4-1 to Vancouver,
- 40:17Speaker 3: yet they had a 1-0 lead through two periods of play,
- 40:20Speaker 3: but the Canucks rallied for four goals in the final
- 40:23Speaker 3: 20 minutes of play, which was not without some controversy.
- 40:27Speaker 3: Liam Ogren had a goal which needed a video review
- 40:29Speaker 3: to confirm, and that had the game tied up at one,
- 40:33Speaker 3: and then the Canucks ran away with it after that.
- 40:36Speaker 3: After the game, Flames head coach Ryan Hushka had his
- 40:39Speaker 3: own thoughts here on the overturned goal.
- 40:41Speaker 20: Obviously, they had a view of it. We didn't see
- 40:43Speaker 20: the view from what we saw. You couldn't tell if
- 40:45Speaker 20: it was over the line, but there must have been
- 40:47Speaker 20: one for them to see it. What I don't like is,
- 40:51Speaker 20: no problem, but you miss coverage on the four-on-four, and
- 40:54Speaker 20: that's the challenge because you're in a 1-1 game on
- 40:57Speaker 20: the road. You want to end with a point, and
- 40:59Speaker 20: that's a big thing. So you have to make sure
- 41:01Speaker 20: that your next play or whatever situation may be is
- 41:03Speaker 20: that you're ready for that. We lost coverage on that goal, unfortunately,
- 41:07Speaker 20: and it bit us.
- 41:08Speaker 3: So no excuses, just the search here for solutions. That's
- 41:12Speaker 3: on Ryan Hushka's mind. And you can bet the Flames
- 41:14Speaker 3: will bring a certain edge here to play today. They
- 41:17Speaker 3: have been living on the edge. Here's Hushka's thoughts on
- 41:20Speaker 3: how it looked from last evening.
- 41:22Speaker 20: I thought there was a lot of good. Adam Klopka
- 41:24Speaker 20: getting involved the way he did. I thought we were edgy.
- 41:27Speaker 20: And that's the way our team has to play now.
- 41:31Speaker 20: Can't take five minor.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Penalties, right?
- 41:32Speaker 20: So again, it's two nights in a row we're in
- 41:35Speaker 20: the same situation. And The biggest part for me tonight
- 41:38Speaker 20: is I felt we lost rhythm with some of our
- 41:39Speaker 20: players again because of the penalties that were taken. So
- 41:42Speaker 20: we have to do a much better job.
- 41:46Speaker 3: And as far as a team that can play on
- 41:48Speaker 3: the edge, be on the lookout right here because the
- 41:50Speaker 3: Flames are suiting up the likes of Brennan Offman here
- 41:53Speaker 3: for tonight, Martin Pospisil, and the big Adam Klapka. You
- 41:57Speaker 3: can certainly expect the Kraken to have to be ready
- 41:59Speaker 3: here for a very, very physical matchup for this evening.
- 42:02Speaker 3: As far as Calgary is concerned, their storylines begin with
- 42:05Speaker 3: Dustin Wolfe, and which one shows up right here as
- 42:07Speaker 3: far as the goaltender? It is his second start in
- 42:10Speaker 3: three games, the Kraken getting on him for six goals
- 42:13Speaker 3: on 32 shots Thursday, and in his career, 2-2-1 record.
- 42:17Speaker 3: in five games with an 8-7-0 save percentage. But he
- 42:21Speaker 3: is a career 9-0-2 save percentage goalie in just 129 games. Secondly,
- 42:27Speaker 3: the eye on Morgan Frost and his line. Last season,
- 42:29Speaker 3: he led the Flames with 22 goals. That was a
- 42:32Speaker 3: career high. But his first two games, no points and
- 42:36Speaker 3: minus six as well on his side. The Kraken also
- 42:39Speaker 3: holding him at just six points in 13 games. So
- 42:41Speaker 3: you can expect maybe Frost is pretty fired up here potentially.
- 42:45Speaker 3: to get his own game going and the Kraken trying
- 42:47Speaker 3: to put up a wall to that measure. Everett and Al,
- 42:51Speaker 3: happy for you. Three keys coming up after this. You're

- 45:08Speaker 7: We're back inside of Climate Plage Arena. Everett Fitzhugh, Big
- 45:11Speaker 7: Al Kaniski, Ryan Shotgun. Al, it is season six, the
- 45:16Speaker 7: sixth home opener here at Climate Plage Arena. The Kraken
- 45:19Speaker 7: have got their first two games out of the way,
- 45:21Speaker 7: but man, It feels good to be home.
- 45:23Speaker 2: 174 days ago, April 13th.
- 45:27Speaker 7: A Monday night against the LA Kings.
- 45:29Speaker 8: Last time Seattle was in this building.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Feels good to be back.
- 45:32Speaker 9: Oh, it feels so good. And this place is filling up.
- 45:35Speaker 9: It feels well past half full already.

- 45:40Speaker 7: Chill Kraken at home for the first of two Vegas
- 45:43Speaker 7: in here on Tuesday. But first things first, partner, a
- 45:46Speaker 7: 3-1 loss last night in Edmonton. The Kraken defensively had
- 45:50Speaker 7: a strong performance. Their ticket on Calgary here tonight, who
- 45:53Speaker 7: they put six up on the board in their home opener,
- 45:57Speaker 7: the 44th and final home opener in the history of
- 46:00Speaker 7: the Scotiabank Saddle Dome.
- 46:01Speaker 8: Crackin' Brew and the party with a 6-1 win.
- 46:04Speaker 7: They're going to need some more strong defensive play here tonight.
- 46:08Speaker 7: How in the world are they going to get that done?
- 46:10Speaker 9: One of the best ways to play defensive hockey is
- 46:13Speaker 9: to play physical. You're in your home opener in front
- 46:16Speaker 9: of Kraken Nation. Now make the Flames wish they'd worn
- 46:19Speaker 9: bubble wrap tonight. The Kraken need to finish checks and
- 46:22Speaker 9: make every trip through the middle feel like getting tossed
- 46:24Speaker 9: in the cement mixer. Don't go looking for trouble, but
- 46:27Speaker 9: if trouble shows up wearing red, give it a Kraken-sized welcome. Secondly,
- 46:33Speaker 9: win your puck battles.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Pucks are loose change tonight. Go and pick them up.
- 46:37Speaker 2: The Kraken have to win the wall battles.
- 46:39Speaker 9: Get underneath Calgary sticks and come out of the scrum
- 46:41Speaker 9: with possession instead of empty pockets. Be first, be nasty,
- 46:45Speaker 9: and make the Flames feel the pressure. Because if you're
- 46:48Speaker 9: going to lose puck battles, you're handing Calgary high octane
- 46:50Speaker 9: fuel to pour on their fire.
- 46:53Speaker 2: And then third, play with speed.
- 46:55Speaker 9: This is where the Kraken can make some waves. Get
- 46:58Speaker 9: the puck moving north with a good first pass into
- 47:00Speaker 9: the D zone. Attack with pace and put Calgary on
- 47:03Speaker 9: their heels. Speed needs to be the Kraken's fastball tonight.
- 47:07Speaker 9: Throw up by the flames before they can even set
- 47:09Speaker 9: their feet. Don't turn Climate Pledge Arena into a Sunday drive.
- 47:13Speaker 9: Make it a high-octane speed chase instead. In sum, the
- 47:18Speaker 9: Kraken are home for their season opener. The barn is
- 47:21Speaker 9: packed and it's time to make Calgary feel like they
- 47:23Speaker 9: wandered into the wrong neighborhood. Get physical, win the dirty battles,
- 47:27Speaker 9: and then hit the gas before the flames can catch
- 47:29Speaker 9: their breath. In short, bring the thunder, own the puck,
- 47:33Speaker 9: and turn the deep into the Bermuda Triangle.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Oh, you don't want to get lost in there. Nothing
- 47:39Speaker 2: comes out of the Bermuda Triangle. Nothing comes out of
- 47:41Speaker 2: the Bermuda Triangle. Bermuda Triangle.
- 47:44Speaker 7: Last night, we saw the Kraken in a strong defensive
- 47:47Speaker 7: game against the Edmonton Oilers.
- 47:49Speaker 8: There were a lot of good battle plays.
- 47:51Speaker 7: I go back to a Connor McDavid, Berkeley Cat and
- 47:54Speaker 7: Wall battle that was very exciting to watch. What did
- 47:58Speaker 7: you notice were the biggest differences between the game Thursday
- 48:02Speaker 7: in Calgary and.
- 48:03Speaker 2: The one last night?
- 48:04Speaker 9: Well, the one last night, you know, you've got to
- 48:05Speaker 9: defend a lot more superstar talent, right? And that's not
- 48:09Speaker 9: to take anybody away from Calgary. They're coming in here
- 48:11Speaker 9: for some redemption. And so you've got to play them hard.
- 48:13Speaker 9: But that Edmonton team is stacked. And if you're not
- 48:16Speaker 9: aware of where guys like Connor McDavid and Leon Dreisaitl
- 48:19Speaker 9: and a handful of other guys are, when they're on
- 48:21Speaker 9: the ice, they're going to burn you. And I thought
- 48:23Speaker 9: the Kraken did a good job keeping gaps tight, playing
- 48:26Speaker 9: those guys tight, and then when there was an opportunity
- 48:29Speaker 9: to play physical doing that, we saw Brandon Montour put
- 48:32Speaker 9: Connor McDavid over the boards on one hit.
- 48:34Speaker 2: He had his feet in the air. He went up
- 48:36Speaker 2: and over.
- 48:37Speaker 9: Yeah, so I think playing that same way physically, playing
- 48:40Speaker 9: that same tight defensive game.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Here against Calgary tonight is going to result in a win.
- 48:45Speaker 7: It's hard to beat a team twice, and especially a
- 48:47Speaker 7: team like the Calgary Flames who Yes, they're young.
- 48:49Speaker 2: They're struggling. They've only scored two goals all season long.
- 48:53Speaker 7: But you know that they're not going to be happy
- 48:57Speaker 7: about their last two games.
- 48:58Speaker 8: We saw the three-season fireworks between those two teams as
- 49:01Speaker 8: well for Seattle.
- 49:03Speaker 7: How important is it to not only play physical, but
- 49:07Speaker 7: not get caught maybe in a little bit of the
- 49:09Speaker 7: extracurriculars that you're sure Calgary is going to try to
- 49:13Speaker 7: put up?
- 49:13Speaker 2: I mean, you've got to pick your spots.
- 49:15Speaker 9: Sometimes your spots are chosen for you because if somebody
- 49:17Speaker 9: takes out one of your players, you've got to do
- 49:19Speaker 9: something about it. But you're not going to go looking
- 49:21Speaker 9: for it. I think protecting the middle of the ice,
- 49:24Speaker 9: and lots of times when teams play physical, they're trying
- 49:26Speaker 9: to get to your net. So protecting the middle of
- 49:28Speaker 9: the ice is going to be a big part of that,
- 49:30Speaker 9: and not going looking for those extra curriculars.
- 49:32Speaker 7: Lane Lambert putting the lines in a bit of a
- 49:34Speaker 7: blender here tonight. We're going to have the top line
- 49:37Speaker 7: of McCann, Beneers, and Mackie Samuskevich will move up top.
- 49:41Speaker 8: McMahon, Stevenson, and Eberle will stay together.
- 49:43Speaker 7: Capococco Berkeley Cat and Shane Wright, they were together during
- 49:47Speaker 7: training camp. That line looked pretty good in the preseason.
- 49:50Speaker 7: But what did you make of Sam Miskevich's debut last night?
- 49:53Speaker 7: And what can we expect out of him here today
- 49:56Speaker 7: on that top line with Jared McCann and Matty Beneers?
- 49:59Speaker 9: Well, again, just like we've talked a lot about Bobby
- 50:01Speaker 9: McMahon and his game, I think Matthew Sam Miskevich is
- 50:04Speaker 9: similar in that he likes to play fast. He likes
- 50:07Speaker 9: to shoot the puck, and just like Bobby McMahon, he
- 50:08Speaker 9: likes to play physical as well. He's not a big guy,
- 50:11Speaker 9: but he has no issue going into guys' chests in
- 50:13Speaker 9: the corner, winning those puck battles by maybe being intense
- 50:18Speaker 9: and being physical. So the fact that those two guys
- 50:20Speaker 9: are going to be on a line together, that's exciting
- 50:22Speaker 9: to see tonight.
- 50:23Speaker 8: You know, he might not be the biggest guy, but
- 50:25Speaker 8: he's intense. He goes into the corners. He's physical.
- 50:28Speaker 2: You know who he is.
- 50:29Speaker 8: Mike Benton! Mike Benton back across the street. He's at
- 50:32Speaker 8: Tom's Wash Bar.

- 53:23Speaker 3: for now, downstairs we go. Wherever it fits, he was
- 53:26Speaker 3: joined by head coach Lane Lambert.
- 53:28Speaker 14: Thanks, Mike.
- 53:29Speaker 7: Happy home opener. Lane, happy home opener to you as well.
- 53:32Speaker 7: You wrapped up a quick two-game season opening road trip
- 53:35Speaker 7: last night. Quite a lot of fight in the game
- 53:38Speaker 7: against the Edmonton Oilers and probably going deserved a little
- 53:42Speaker 7: more than you got just take us through your thoughts
- 53:45Speaker 7: you overcame a pretty slow start in the first period
- 53:48Speaker 7: to to come close to a point at least last.
- 53:51Speaker 21: Night yeah I thought you know the slow start a
- 53:55Speaker 21: little bit of a byproduct of penalty trouble early on
- 54:00Speaker 21: and you know I think that the first goal I
- 54:05Speaker 21: think you know was a bit of a tough one
- 54:07Speaker 21: to give up But from there, I thought Groovy played really,
- 54:11Speaker 21: really well. You know, we had a little bit of
- 54:14Speaker 21: trouble getting into rhythm because of the penalties in the
- 54:16Speaker 21: first period. But then I thought we got our legs going.
- 54:19Speaker 21: And I thought that, to your point, I thought there
- 54:23Speaker 21: was a lot of battle level from our hockey team.
- 54:25Speaker 21: You know, those guys on that team, 97 and 29,
- 54:31Speaker 21: are super good.
- 54:34Speaker 14: And I thought we played them hard all night.
- 54:36Speaker 21: I know that they... Probably walked out of there feeling
- 54:39Speaker 21: like they were in a hockey game. And, you know,
- 54:43Speaker 21: it was unfortunate that it turned out.
- 54:46Speaker 2: The way it did.
- 54:46Speaker 21: It was a bad bounce to the slot on the
- 54:48Speaker 21: winning goal with, you know, just over two and a
- 54:50Speaker 21: half minutes left. But, you know, the one thing about
- 54:53Speaker 21: that and the one thing we have to do as
- 54:54Speaker 21: a team is, you know, there's a cause and effect
- 54:57Speaker 21: to certain situations. And if you put yourself in those situations,
- 55:01Speaker 21: sometimes you get unlucky. And I think that, you know,
- 55:05Speaker 21: from a growth and from a learning standpoint.
- 55:08Speaker 21: Talk about consistency rate from day one. And I didn't
- 55:12Speaker 21: think we were consistent enough in our execution in the
- 55:15Speaker 21: third period as a whole. I thought there was some
- 55:18Speaker 21: plays that were fairly simple tape-to-tape passes that we missed
- 55:21Speaker 21: that ended up, instead of us going down and pressuring
- 55:24Speaker 21: them on the offense, they transitioned and came back and
- 55:28Speaker 21: pressured us. So it's a learning curve for us, you know,
- 55:33Speaker 21: but at some point here, We've got to find a
- 55:37Speaker 21: way to get points when.
- 55:38Speaker 4: We get into those situations.
- 55:40Speaker 7: I want to get your thoughts on the battle level
- 55:41Speaker 7: last night for Seattle. There seemed to be a number
- 55:43Speaker 7: of net front battles. I remember a wall battle with
- 55:47Speaker 7: Berkley Catton and Connor McDavid. What did you make of
- 55:51Speaker 7: the guys' willingness to go to the front of the net,
- 55:55Speaker 7: to skate with the Edmonton Oilers, knowing that they're a
- 55:58Speaker 7: fast team, you've got two of the best players in
- 55:59Speaker 7: the world on the other side. What did you make
- 56:01Speaker 7: of that part of the game for Seattle?
- 56:03Speaker 21: Well, I made of it what I expected of it.
- 56:06Speaker 21: We're a fast team too. We should battle every night.
- 56:11Speaker 21: It doesn't matter who we're playing, whether it's Edmonton, Colorado, Calgary, Vegas, whoever.
- 56:18Speaker 21: Our team, we believe in our team. They believe in
- 56:26Speaker 21: each other. To me, that's just a given right there.
- 56:30Speaker 21: That's the entry ticket to the game.
- 56:33Speaker 7: What did you feel were the two biggest differences between
- 56:37Speaker 7: the win in Calgary and the loss last night? Obviously
- 56:40Speaker 7: two different teams, but still, you did a lot of
- 56:43Speaker 7: the same things in both games very, very well. Where
- 56:45Speaker 7: did you find the turning points in both of those
- 56:48Speaker 7: games or between those two games?
- 56:50Speaker 21: Well, I think that we managed to capitalize on our
- 56:53Speaker 21: chances in Calgary, whereas we had.
- 56:54Speaker 14: Some really good chances in Edmonton.
- 56:56Speaker 21: You know, McCann on the second period on a great
- 56:59Speaker 21: play from Kako across the crease. certainly Eberle in the
- 57:03Speaker 21: third period. You know, those plays in Calgary went in
- 57:08Speaker 21: the net. So that was a little bit of the difference.
- 57:12Speaker 21: You know, and then I do believe that we were
- 57:15Speaker 21: a little more committed to get to their net in
- 57:19Speaker 21: Calgary than we were in Edmonton. And we were a
- 57:22Speaker 21: little better keeping the Calgary Flames away from our net
- 57:25Speaker 21: than we were last night. I thought Groovy had some
- 57:29Speaker 21: traffic in front of him, which, you know, created some
- 57:33Speaker 21: frustration on his part. So we have to do a
- 57:36Speaker 21: better job of controlling the paint at both ends of
- 57:38Speaker 21: the ice, and tonight's game is going to.
- 57:40Speaker 2: Be a battle.
- 57:41Speaker 14: You know, obviously they're coachless.
- 57:43Speaker 3: That's Lane Lambert and more of that conversation up right
- 57:46Speaker 3: now via the Kraken Audio Network on the iHeartRadio app.
