- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland saying the decision not to hold a
- 0:03Speaker 1: referendum on the new Churchill Falls deal was a difficult one.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Premier Tony wakem acknowledges that some people will be disappointed
- 0:11Speaker 1: with the move. The promise of a referendum was a
- 0:14Speaker 1: key commitment in the PC election platform. Yesterday, wakem revealed
- 0:19Speaker 1: that a public vote will not be held, instead replacing
- 0:22Speaker 1: it with a special debate in the legislature. When asked
- 0:26Speaker 1: why he changed course, Wakem states that the time is
- 0:29Speaker 1: now and the urgency is there. That statement is very
- 0:34Speaker 1: different from Wakem's position leading up to this point, where
- 0:37Speaker 1: he repeatedly said he would not be held to any
- 0:40Speaker 1: artificial deadlines and would not be rushed into making any deals.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Well, what's happened is I also said that I wouldn't
- 0:48Speaker 2: make a decision until we reached a deal. So we
- 0:50Speaker 2: have reached a deal and when I look at the
- 0:52Speaker 2: opportunities in front of New Finland and Larbador, that's what
- 0:56Speaker 2: we're talking about, you know. I turned around and asked
- 0:59Speaker 2: for an if any review. We have followed the recommendations
- 1:02Speaker 2: of that independent review and we have come up with
- 1:05Speaker 2: more power, more transmission, and more value, more jobs, a
- 1:10Speaker 2: federal government who wants to be involved in the project,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and right now is the opportunity for us to move.
- 1:16Speaker 1: The Premiere of Quebec says a Churchill Falls agreement is
- 1:20Speaker 1: important for her province, and she cautions the Party of
- 1:23Speaker 1: Quebec WA against making good on their promise to scrap
- 1:26Speaker 1: the deal if there is a change in government following
- 1:29Speaker 1: the upcoming Quebec election. The agreement announced yesterday is non
- 1:34Speaker 1: binding and is scheduled to be finalized by the end
- 1:37Speaker 1: of the year. Christine Furschett was asked about what assurances
- 1:40Speaker 1: she can provide that the same thing doesn't happen in
- 1:43Speaker 1: her province as just happened in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Of course, our government will make sure to implement that
- 1:50Speaker 3: agreement because it brings to Quebec thousands of new megawats
- 1:55Speaker 3: and we need those megawetes for residents, for businesses, for
- 2:00Speaker 3: regions in Quebec. And I see that the Particle BEQUI
- 2:03Speaker 3: is interested in tearing up disagreement. They don't want to
- 2:06Speaker 3: implement it, okay, So what do they offer to Quebecers
- 2:10Speaker 3: if it's not disagreement? Where will they find the ten
- 2:13Speaker 3: thousand megawats we are bringing to Quebec with that agreement.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Lapress reporter Joelle Denise Bellvance says it would be folly
- 2:22Speaker 1: for the Party of Quebec WA to rip up the
- 2:24Speaker 1: Churchill Falls deal should they win the next Quebec election.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He says that Churchill Falls represent fifteen percent of the
- 2:31Speaker 1: electricity that flows to Quebec and that needs to be doubled.
- 2:35Speaker 1: He says getting similar energy capacity without Newfoundland and Labrador
- 2:39Speaker 1: is just not possible.
- 2:41Speaker 4: What will be the alternatives, Well, they're pretty bleak if
- 2:44Speaker 4: you don't have New Finland Labrador in to that solution.
- 2:48Speaker 4: And so it's going to be a major, major push
- 2:50Speaker 4: by the CAC government to make sure that this deal
- 2:53Speaker 4: is actually seeing the light of the day.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Bellevance says he subsequently learned that the CEO of Hydro
- 2:59Speaker 1: Quebec is reaching out to party leaders in that province
- 3:02Speaker 1: ahead of the provincial election to explain the importance of
- 3:05Speaker 1: the deal.
- 3:06Speaker 4: This is a win win deal, that it's in the
- 3:11Speaker 4: best interests of Quebec and it has to be approved.
- 3:14Speaker 4: So what will the pacubquad do with that kind of information?
- 3:18Speaker 4: The pundits, I would argue there to mention to you,
- 3:22Speaker 4: the pundits, the commentators, the experts are saying that the
- 3:26Speaker 4: Pascubicua has no choice but to say that they will
- 3:30Speaker 4: follow and side with this deal. Otherwise they're going to
- 3:33Speaker 4: be caught in a bind and they're going to be
- 3:35Speaker 4: bringing the whole population of Quebec with it.
- 3:38Speaker 1: The Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Criminal Lawyers Association
- 3:43Speaker 1: are challenging the constitutionality of a new cash bail system
- 3:47Speaker 1: in Ontario. Here's Lisa Laporte.
- 3:50Speaker 5: New rules, first announced last fall by Premier Doug Ford's
- 3:54Speaker 5: government that take effect this week, require people accused of
- 3:58Speaker 5: a crime and granted bail to a cash security deposit
- 4:02Speaker 5: upon release. They or their sureties Previously only had to
- 4:06Speaker 5: forfeit the money if the accused breached their release conditions
- 4:10Speaker 5: and the court ordered payment. The two legal organizations filed
- 4:14Speaker 5: a court challenge against the law on Monday, arguing that
- 4:18Speaker 5: people accused of a crime who can't afford to pay
- 4:21Speaker 5: a security deposit will be more likely to be left
- 4:24Speaker 5: in jail, even though they are at that point presumed innocent.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Lisa lapport The Canadian Press Toronto.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Hand painted beaver statues representing different countries in the FIFA
- 4:37Speaker 1: World Cup and Toronto are now up for auction. The
- 4:40Speaker 1: auction began on Friday, and online bidding on fifty beaver
- 4:44Speaker 1: installations has already received more than thirty thousand dollars in bids.
- 4:50Speaker 1: It's set to close on August twenty four. Proceeds will
- 4:54Speaker 1: be split equally between two charitable organizations, Toronto's First Post
- 4:59Speaker 1: Office and CA Kids Sport Ontario. That's your news. I'm
- 5:03Speaker 1: Sarah Strickland.
