- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the me Eat podcast coming at you shirtless,
- 0:12Speaker 1: severely bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening Hunt
- 0:16Speaker 1: E podcast. You can't predict anything presented by first, like
- 0:22Speaker 1: creating proven versatile hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to
- 0:26Speaker 1: technical outerwear for every hunt. First like go farther, stay longer, everybody.
- 0:38Speaker 1: You're joining us from the banks of the Niobrara River, right,
- 0:42Speaker 1: that's right near its confluence with the aptly named do
- 0:49Speaker 1: Your Creek. Yes, it does flow into it, not far
- 0:54Speaker 1: from a bridge where none other than Buffalo Bill Buffalo
- 1:00Speaker 1: Bill Cody was probably photographed. Is he the same as
- 1:04Speaker 1: wild Bill? No? No, that's Hiccock right, wild Bill Hiccock.
- 1:11Speaker 1: What was wild Bill Hiccock colden when he died the
- 1:15Speaker 1: dead Man's hand yep, Yeah, But what was it? And
- 1:20Speaker 1: what was the fifth card? I do not know that one.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Some historians argue he had a seven of Hearts or
- 1:26Speaker 1: something like that. Not a cool card. I thought it
- 1:32Speaker 1: was a full house. The interesting thing about the Nile
- 1:33Speaker 1: Brier River where we're sitting right now is if we
- 1:35Speaker 1: looked out the window and saw one, it would be
- 1:38Speaker 1: on the wrong side of the river forest. It'd have
- 1:41Speaker 1: to run through the yard to jump that river to
- 1:44Speaker 1: be in our hunt zone. And we're actively hunting right now,
- 1:47Speaker 1: taking a break. We are keep this tight. We got
- 1:52Speaker 1: unfinished business. The last evening of our hunt, Clay got
- 1:56Speaker 1: a deer first, too quick, a little too quick. It
- 2:01Speaker 1: feels bad. But he's got survivor's guilt. I really, he's
- 2:04Speaker 1: got a conversion of survivor's guilt. And he's writing a
- 2:07Speaker 1: song called should have been Me? Why isn't it the
- 2:11Speaker 1: Why would it be that? Um? I think the song
- 2:13Speaker 1: should be it should have been Steve? Well, what should
- 2:17Speaker 1: have been you? Well, it's actually favorable to you because
- 2:21Speaker 1: as we're so the way this farm sets up, Steve
- 2:25Speaker 1: has been off hunting, and because I've filled my buck
- 2:28Speaker 1: tag and we can't come back to that, and we
- 2:30Speaker 1: have been like a mile and a half away on
- 2:32Speaker 1: a hilltop, watching you hunt and watching deer and watching
- 2:37Speaker 1: what's going on. And just a phrase that comes out
- 2:39Speaker 1: of my mouth to Dirt is it should have been
- 2:43Speaker 1: me down there on the battlefield. It should have been you.
- 2:48Speaker 1: It should have been you. It should have been you
- 2:51Speaker 1: up here taking it easy. Me and Dirt having the
- 2:53Speaker 1: time of our life, just drinking coffee, writing songs, just
- 2:58Speaker 1: living in the glory of a filled buck tag because
- 3:02Speaker 1: because this but I feel like the buck was rightfully
- 3:05Speaker 1: yours because on the first morning, Jordan took you to
- 3:07Speaker 1: the honey hoole and she put me in, you know,
- 3:11Speaker 1: honey Hoole number two. Okay, you feel that that's what happened, yea.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And here's why I don't think that's what happened, because
- 3:20Speaker 1: she also goes and hunts that spot. Oh, I just killed.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It's not like she's like she I feel it's like
- 3:27Speaker 1: a toss up. Well no, and she rightfully should have
- 3:30Speaker 1: took you there. I mean, it's like there's always I know, honey,
- 3:34Speaker 1: there's always the best spot, okay, And she took you
- 3:37Speaker 1: to the best spot, and y'all saw a buck that morning.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And then that afternoon we had a guest come into
- 3:43Speaker 1: the camp and there was some decisions made, and you
- 3:46Speaker 1: wanted to go for a walk in the guests best interest. Yeah,
- 3:50Speaker 1: I know. And that's why it should have been me.
- 3:53Speaker 1: That's why you got Survivor's guild. Yeah. And so they
- 3:55Speaker 1: sent so Jordan's sent me back to where she was
- 3:59Speaker 1: gonna where he was gonna sit and I mean, like clockwork,
- 4:03Speaker 1: this really nice ten point buck came out, incredible, hunt
- 4:08Speaker 1: deer came in, killed the deer. So I mean I'm
- 4:12Speaker 1: calling I called the buck Steve's buck. That's a good
- 4:15Speaker 1: name for it. Steve for short, and then Steve and
- 4:18Speaker 1: then Steve's. You know, we've we've struggled. We just hadn't
- 4:22Speaker 1: killed a deer yet. So that's all joined also by Chester.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Chester's here. Chester's learning. Uh, he's learning a new song.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Tell everybody what song you gonna learn from me? Eat Chester?
- 4:31Speaker 1: It is tonight we ride, you know, and you're gonna
- 4:35Speaker 1: put put put. Uh, He's gonna put the who you
- 4:37Speaker 1: up a song on? On? Hold? Yep, that's a Tom
- 4:40Speaker 1: Russell song. Oh, I's just tell him Clay about Tom
- 4:44Speaker 1: Russell Man. Violent songs, definitely violent dirts here and then
- 4:49Speaker 1: Who's always say, uh, okay, it is a handful things,
- 5:02Speaker 1: oh dirt right off the bat. We gotta talk about
- 5:03Speaker 1: w D forty. So listen, that's a great story. Get
- 5:06Speaker 1: your thing out, Get your thing out. I don't know
- 5:07Speaker 1: what you're talking about. We're sitting there up at uh
- 5:13Speaker 1: my new mechanic, my new outboard motor mechanic, and catch
- 5:17Speaker 1: can Alaska. Tyler that catch Cancanda advised us too, when
- 5:25Speaker 1: you win a rising, your motors, when you're a rising,
- 5:28Speaker 1: your engines to take the cowling off and hose everything
- 5:32Speaker 1: in there with w D forty. Okay, yep. So Dirt
- 5:36Speaker 1: was doing a little winter rizing and I instructed him
- 5:39Speaker 1: to do this. He came to me and and and
- 5:43Speaker 1: I I tried to to to please him with some
- 5:47Speaker 1: trivia in which I asked if he knows about the
- 5:49Speaker 1: w D N w D forty stands for and I didn't,
- 5:52Speaker 1: but you you didn't, and I said, He said water displacement.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Then Dirt said w D at least Dirts like, well,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'll give you a little known fact. He's like, you're
- 6:03Speaker 1: not the only one who knows little known facts. Dirt says,
- 6:06Speaker 1: W four. He is not actually a lubricant, just a
- 6:09Speaker 1: water repellent. It's just a water repellent, to which I said,
- 6:11Speaker 1: that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. And as an example,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I said, Dirt, imagine you have a rusty hinge and
- 6:21Speaker 1: you put it in a kiln for a decade no moisture,
- 6:27Speaker 1: so it's is dry for nine years and three hundred
- 6:33Speaker 1: and sixty four and a half days, it's been as
- 6:36Speaker 1: dry as could possibly be dry, and you pull the
- 6:40Speaker 1: hinge out and hose it down with w D. Dirt
- 6:45Speaker 1: is saying that it won't make a difference. That caused
- 6:48Speaker 1: me some pause, because that would work so well. This
- 6:51Speaker 1: is the thing I find useful Dirt is I like
- 6:54Speaker 1: to think when I'm trying to think of something right
- 6:56Speaker 1: or wrong or whatever, I think of it in total extremes.
- 6:59Speaker 1: It's helpful. Yeah, that's good Dirt. Then it's on his mind.
- 7:05Speaker 1: A few days goes by and he comes up to
- 7:07Speaker 1: me to prove his point, and he has a screenshot
- 7:14Speaker 1: of an article he found online, very gloatingly, which said
- 7:18Speaker 1: he's all proud of it. He's all proud of it,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and it says w D forty is not a lubricant
- 7:24Speaker 1: in bold letters. And what he hadn't noticed them is
- 7:28Speaker 1: he was on a site of myths, and he hadn't
- 7:32Speaker 1: notice that the sentence he was pointing out to me
- 7:34Speaker 1: was preceded by the word myth, which Clay realized that
- 7:41Speaker 1: since Dirt's name is dirt myth, Clay thought Clay thinks
- 7:46Speaker 1: that Dirt thought it was his own quote because it
- 7:49Speaker 1: says myth col and dirts like see here right here
- 7:52Speaker 1: is me saying he smartphones man. Or it was saying, um, hey,
- 7:59Speaker 1: Durt myth. This yeah, it was like smith. It would
- 8:03Speaker 1: have been like play and then it told me something
- 8:06Speaker 1: really good. So just yeah, it's confusing when your name
- 8:10Speaker 1: is dirt myth. But the bottom of the fact of
- 8:13Speaker 1: the matter is it is just so folks don't get confused.
- 8:16Speaker 1: It is lubricant because they read great risk of being
- 8:20Speaker 1: confused and dig into it was only a water repellent.
- 8:23Speaker 1: It's also great for removing stickers. Oh really from Chester's
- 8:30Speaker 1: desk or something. If you want to remove a sticker,
- 8:34Speaker 1: use w D on your car, on your windows, what
- 8:39Speaker 1: your computer? Why would I want to remove a sticker?
- 8:42Speaker 1: I love my dad. That the buff I mean if
- 8:45Speaker 1: you had someone take off there. I don't want to
- 8:49Speaker 1: be responsible for like ruining people's computers. But you know
- 8:52Speaker 1: I've used it on windows and glass cars. Chester's onto
- 8:55Speaker 1: his ninth nickname in a month. It's all set chat,
- 9:00Speaker 1: all set chat, set chat, all set chet. Oh here's
- 9:05Speaker 1: the thing. Uh so Thanksgivings coming, and as we all know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: Thanksgiving is only there for one purpose to give us
- 9:12Speaker 1: a Black Friday. Right, So Black Friday so day after Thanksgiving,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and it's not It's become like a day where everybody
- 9:18Speaker 1: likes to buy a bunch of stuff. So if you
- 9:21Speaker 1: go on now the very hot highest selling fuds calendar,
- 9:25Speaker 1: if you go onto the Meat Eater store and make
- 9:28Speaker 1: a purchase on Black Friday, We're gonna give you the
- 9:32Speaker 1: left up old deer stands calendar for free. Oh we
- 9:37Speaker 1: got some good ones lately. One is one that beavers
- 9:40Speaker 1: cut down to cut down the stand, and another one
- 9:43Speaker 1: is a tree that got struck by lightning and the
- 9:45Speaker 1: lightning peels all the bark off down the tree and
- 9:48Speaker 1: ends at the seat. Yeah, you'd have been a dead man.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And it kind of welded the stand up a little bit.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna put that on Instagram. Do you think that
- 9:56Speaker 1: the lightning used to stand as a conductor. I think
- 10:00Speaker 1: it was something like that, and I think it probably
- 10:01Speaker 1: went the other way. But if you look at it
- 10:03Speaker 1: looks like this like bolt because it like speeled the
- 10:06Speaker 1: bark off and it sort of ends at the stand,
- 10:09Speaker 1: So almost rather than being what it was stand got
- 10:12Speaker 1: struck and then went up the tree, it looks like
- 10:15Speaker 1: it's somehow like came down the tree and split the
- 10:19Speaker 1: would be hunter's head and half had you been sitting there?
- 10:22Speaker 1: Uh so your left up old deer stands calendar free
- 10:28Speaker 1: um and also this new rifle sculpts. We got uh
- 10:33Speaker 1: hundred bucks off Vortex diamondback three by five to ten
- 10:37Speaker 1: by fifty so the perfect all purpose rifle scope. Got
- 10:41Speaker 1: it from bucks Off plus has t shirts, hoodies all
- 10:46Speaker 1: fifty off. And then we're bundling our very rare meat
- 10:49Speaker 1: crafty knife with some of our books. Go check that
- 10:51Speaker 1: stuff out. Okay, Clay, ready for this thing out of Vermont.
- 10:55Speaker 1: See people think that everyone Veront just sits around eating
- 10:57Speaker 1: Ben and Jerry's all the time, but it's not. They fight.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I didn't know about this Vermont. I feel like I'm
- 11:03Speaker 1: the only guy in the planet didn't know about what's
- 11:05Speaker 1: brewing in Vermont between the hound hunters and the non
- 11:10Speaker 1: hunt honors. Right here, this is the funny part here.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I know about this only because a listener of this
- 11:16Speaker 1: show wrote in saying that we should take the gold
- 11:22Speaker 1: Shaw what's the guy's thing Shaw gold gold Shaw Farm.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I don't know. Come on, Clay, sorry man, I told you,
- 11:31Speaker 1: like a week ago, we're gonna be talking about this
- 11:33Speaker 1: gold Shaw farm. He wrote in being like, man, you
- 11:37Speaker 1: should really have a solidarity with the gold Shaw Farm
- 11:40Speaker 1: guy because it's making Houners look bad. And I was like, oh,
- 11:43Speaker 1: what what's this now? This guy's this guy is so online,
- 11:48Speaker 1: so online. There's a there's what we're gonna talk about
- 11:51Speaker 1: here for a minute. We got a story that that
- 11:52Speaker 1: we had a story on a week's like three weeks ago,
- 11:54Speaker 1: Spencer had a someone do a story on it for
- 11:57Speaker 1: at the Mediator dot com and go read the story
- 11:59Speaker 1: about this hound hunting scandal, bear hunting scandal. Let me
- 12:06Speaker 1: give you a basic and this is the best I understand.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I've aready heard of. This guy. God bless him. Uh
- 12:11Speaker 1: you can't see him has an extraordinary uh some similarity
- 12:17Speaker 1: to jay Leno, like if jay Leno had a kid.
- 12:20Speaker 1: He apparently he uh grew up a city slicker working
- 12:26Speaker 1: various jobs and and then he's like, I'm gonna go
- 12:28Speaker 1: to Vermont have a farm. So, in the great tradition
- 12:35Speaker 1: of people who give up the urban lifestyle to go
- 12:38Speaker 1: have a farm, he starts a YouTube channel um and
- 12:43Speaker 1: makes video Here's some of his videos. He's got a
- 12:45Speaker 1: video called Puppy Versus Geese. He's got a video called
- 12:49Speaker 1: my farm dog shot this video. He's got one called
- 12:53Speaker 1: the Duckling who thought she was a goose. He's got
- 12:57Speaker 1: livestock guard puppy moves to duck farm. My old barn
- 13:02Speaker 1: cat hates my guard dog, and I risked my life
- 13:06Speaker 1: feeding these goslings. Uh. So he goes about his business.
- 13:11Speaker 1: It's like his business like he makes I think in
- 13:14Speaker 1: all fairings, you say he makes like cute, cute farm videos.
- 13:19Speaker 1: One day, a couple of local old timers show up
- 13:23Speaker 1: at his door, knock on his door, and they say,
- 13:29Speaker 1: are bear hounds. Chase the bear onto your property? Is
- 13:36Speaker 1: it okay? If we go onto your property? He says,
- 13:43Speaker 1: to retrieve their get the doc. He says, you're no way,
- 13:47Speaker 1: no how, I'm going to hurt the bear, which is
- 13:49Speaker 1: his right, totally his right, okay. And he says, I
- 13:57Speaker 1: will escort you to get your dogs, at which point
- 14:00Speaker 1: he decides, because he's in the business of making these
- 14:02Speaker 1: little videos. At this point he decides to start filming.
- 14:07Speaker 1: This gentleman, gets his name, publishes his name, and films
- 14:13Speaker 1: the guy. So a guy comes up to the house,
- 14:14Speaker 1: like like, imagine someone coming to your house to just
- 14:19Speaker 1: have a conversation about a problem, and your response is
- 14:23Speaker 1: to start filming them as they go about their business.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And is this a good place to to say that
- 14:31Speaker 1: the guy, what the guy's motives were, and how are
- 14:33Speaker 1: you getting all that next? It's a hard story to tell.
- 14:36Speaker 1: He's got so many components. Vermont has a law which
- 14:41Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not even a post. It's called
- 14:43Speaker 1: right to retrieve. They have a law that's beyond that.
- 14:48Speaker 1: If land's not posted, it's open. A landowner has an
- 14:52Speaker 1: obligation to post their land. Okay, this guy's land, this
- 14:58Speaker 1: guy's duck farm isn't properly posted. So the technically the
- 15:07Speaker 1: hound hunter didn't need to come talk to him. He
- 15:12Speaker 1: could have just gone and got his dog, could have
- 15:14Speaker 1: gone and gotten his dogs without breaking a law because
- 15:16Speaker 1: land wasn't properly posted. But he doesn't want to do
- 15:18Speaker 1: that because it's not gentlemanly. He's gonna go like a
- 15:22Speaker 1: grown up and talk to the landowner. That guy's got
- 15:26Speaker 1: good etiquette, good great chetot the downs check a story.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So the duck guy is real bent out of shape
- 15:39Speaker 1: about this because he points out. He's like, it would
- 15:42Speaker 1: be too hard. I think he's got a hundred sixty acres.
- 15:44Speaker 1: It would be too hard to post my land properly.
- 15:49Speaker 1: But I'm like, if if you're make a YouTube video
- 15:53Speaker 1: about it, if you you gonna have a video like
- 15:55Speaker 1: me and my dog post my land, it's good marketing. Yeah.
- 15:59Speaker 1: And then he'd had to be careful though, because while
- 16:02Speaker 1: he's posting the land with his dog, he needs to
- 16:05Speaker 1: be very careful that his dog doesn't walk on the
- 16:09Speaker 1: wrong side of a tree, at which point he'd be
- 16:11Speaker 1: guilty too of having his dog on someone else's property.
- 16:14Speaker 1: But let's just trust that his dog has always had
- 16:18Speaker 1: tremendous fidelity to this hundred sixty acres, never went off
- 16:21Speaker 1: the hundred sixty acres. He says, Uh, the problem is
- 16:29Speaker 1: dogs don't know when they're on private property. Ergo that's Latin. Therefore,
- 16:37Speaker 1: ergo you should not be able to hunt with hounds
- 16:40Speaker 1: in the state of her mind and has now gotten
- 16:44Speaker 1: hundreds of thousands of signatures on some petition to ban
- 16:47Speaker 1: hound hunting in Vermont because he's so concerned that a
- 16:53Speaker 1: dog would come on his land. Icky dog on his land,
- 17:01Speaker 1: I mean come on it's wild. What's also so puzzling
- 17:06Speaker 1: about it is this whole thing of like I moved
- 17:08Speaker 1: to the country to be like a country person, but
- 17:10Speaker 1: I sure hate what these country people were up to, right, Yeah,
- 17:16Speaker 1: you know that's that's the thing is that And you've
- 17:19Speaker 1: heard you've heard the phrase that people left where they
- 17:23Speaker 1: came from because they didn't like it and try to
- 17:24Speaker 1: make it like where they came from when they move
- 17:27Speaker 1: to where you are. You know. But what I was
- 17:31Speaker 1: talking about the right to retrieve. There are some states
- 17:34Speaker 1: that have how honey laws to have a right to
- 17:36Speaker 1: retrieve law because these are tree dogs. So a tree
- 17:39Speaker 1: dog scent trails game until that animal runs up a
- 17:43Speaker 1: tree that could be a raccoon, that could be a
- 17:44Speaker 1: bear other And and the right to retreat means if
- 17:49Speaker 1: your dogs are treat you have the right to You
- 17:51Speaker 1: can't take a firearm, but you have the right to
- 17:53Speaker 1: cross get your dogs. And you know, here here's the
- 17:57Speaker 1: thing that is. Yeah, that's a slight be slightly intrusive
- 18:01Speaker 1: to some people's ideas of private property, But when you
- 18:06Speaker 1: look at the broad macro picture of North American hunting
- 18:09Speaker 1: and even human existence on planet Earth, people's connection to
- 18:14Speaker 1: hunting dogs. I'm getting to the point where I'm saying
- 18:18Speaker 1: that it is a it is a legitimate argument that
- 18:22Speaker 1: it is almost a human right to express part of
- 18:25Speaker 1: our humanity by hunting with dogs. I mean, there's arguments
- 18:29Speaker 1: that put that unchanged that organ be in Jordan's they
- 18:32Speaker 1: were talking about how come everything unchanged that organ is annoying,
- 18:36Speaker 1: not anoying, and change that organ and make that like
- 18:39Speaker 1: a thing that's unchanged that way. Well, so just the
- 18:42Speaker 1: so here's all that I'm saying is that people should
- 18:45Speaker 1: make a place in their world where it's okay for
- 18:51Speaker 1: a houndsman to go get his dogs if your dogs
- 18:53Speaker 1: get on your land. In Arkansas, the old time farmers
- 18:56Speaker 1: that have long history in our region in the Ozarks,
- 19:01Speaker 1: they just kind of know that coon hunters might come
- 19:04Speaker 1: on their land at different times during the winter. That's
- 19:07Speaker 1: part of his thing that he's all been out of
- 19:08Speaker 1: shape about. This is like the guy that came to
- 19:11Speaker 1: his door to go get his dogs and on his
- 19:13Speaker 1: property was the last straw. The first straw being a
- 19:16Speaker 1: night some raccoon guys had some dogs barking on his place,
- 19:19Speaker 1: and he got his dog to barking and that is
- 19:21Speaker 1: just unacceptable when you're a real farmer. That it's just
- 19:27Speaker 1: a bridge too far. The other thing, he's like, I
- 19:32Speaker 1: you know, he's like, oh, I'm not against hunting. Come on,
- 19:35Speaker 1: I hope he comes on the show. This is an
- 19:37Speaker 1: honest thing. I know someone will send this is he'll
- 19:39Speaker 1: someone will send us to him. I would love to
- 19:41Speaker 1: have him on the show and tell me where I'm
- 19:43Speaker 1: getting this wrong. I mean a totally friendly way, like
- 19:47Speaker 1: I won't be like I got you deal, It'll just
- 19:50Speaker 1: be like I'd be like, Okay, tell me the story
- 19:52Speaker 1: just so I understand it better, like what like what happened?
- 19:55Speaker 1: Because he also gets into like he's not opposed to hunting,
- 19:57Speaker 1: he's not opposed to using bird dogs, but somehow he
- 20:00Speaker 1: doesn't like hound hunting because the hounds have a tracking
- 20:03Speaker 1: collar and you're not close to them, and so he
- 20:06Speaker 1: kind of turns into like a fair chase thing for
- 20:08Speaker 1: him as well. But I mean, aren't his ducks are
- 20:11Speaker 1: in a pen? What are their odds of getting away?
- 20:16Speaker 1: Do a lot of them get away? You know, people
- 20:20Speaker 1: people use people use the GPS thing as a way
- 20:24Speaker 1: to talk about fair chase with hounds, and I think
- 20:28Speaker 1: it's I think it's bunk because we use technology and
- 20:32Speaker 1: every other part of our life and even in every
- 20:34Speaker 1: other part of hunting to make the process safer, more efficient, easier,
- 20:40Speaker 1: more educational. Point out, because you're gonna go after you're
- 20:43Speaker 1: not You're not gonna go after trail camps. You're gonna
- 20:46Speaker 1: make it. I don't even have to go there. But
- 20:48Speaker 1: I'm just saying no, no, no, no, no, don't no,
- 20:51Speaker 1: don't let me start to make the point well, which
- 20:53Speaker 1: I was just getting excited. I was getting excited about
- 20:55Speaker 1: your point. I could I could give a thousand reasons
- 20:58Speaker 1: why GPS collars on doll dogs make it less likely
- 21:02Speaker 1: that you're gonna lose your dogs less so it's good
- 21:04Speaker 1: for the dog. It's safer for the dog. And he
- 21:06Speaker 1: cares a lot about dogs because he's got a lot
- 21:08Speaker 1: of stuff about his dog on his thing, so I
- 21:10Speaker 1: would think he'd want these dogs to make it home
- 21:12Speaker 1: to cuddle at night. If he cares about his dogs,
- 21:14Speaker 1: he will put a GPS call. Doesn't care about dogs,
- 21:17Speaker 1: so they won't cross the highway. I can tone my
- 21:20Speaker 1: dogs back off of private land. My dog's tree on
- 21:24Speaker 1: another piece of property, I can tone and tone doesn't
- 21:28Speaker 1: mean shock them. Tone means just beat their collar and
- 21:31Speaker 1: they will come back to me. A lot of really,
- 21:34Speaker 1: a lot of houndsmen have that capacity of their dogs
- 21:36Speaker 1: to long range. Give commands to their dogs that will
- 21:39Speaker 1: cause him to come back. Um. So this whole idea
- 21:42Speaker 1: that you know, GPS makes it not fair, Chase is
- 21:45Speaker 1: not is not Okay. I got another point about this
- 21:47Speaker 1: whole thing that the hopefully we can have this guy
- 21:49Speaker 1: in the show, we can ask them about not too
- 21:51Speaker 1: long ago, my kids were out shooting their bowls in
- 21:53Speaker 1: the yard and they're not they're not above just letting
- 21:58Speaker 1: one flying out and then to see what happened. Well
- 22:02Speaker 1: he I don't know. He had a whole thing about
- 22:04Speaker 1: what happened, but long and short of it is, they
- 22:06Speaker 1: launched the one and stuck it into the neighbor's garage. Okay,
- 22:12Speaker 1: out of stickboat. He didn't want to do this, but
- 22:16Speaker 1: I said, you're gonna go over and you're gonna knock
- 22:18Speaker 1: on that man's door. And I know the guy, he's
- 22:20Speaker 1: an admirable guy. I'm like, you're gonna knock on his door,
- 22:23Speaker 1: You're gonna tell him, you gotta tell him something, and
- 22:26Speaker 1: you're gonna take him and show him the arrow in
- 22:28Speaker 1: the garage. And I knew already know the guy, so
- 22:32Speaker 1: I know the guy is not he's cool and he's
- 22:34Speaker 1: gonna be like he's gonna deep down think it's funny.
- 22:38Speaker 1: But like so I'm not sending him into dany like
- 22:40Speaker 1: if I had any question, I wouldn't have done it.
- 22:43Speaker 1: But I you know what I mean, I know how
- 22:45Speaker 1: it'll be. I know how it'll go, and it'll be
- 22:47Speaker 1: a good lesson for him to go and fess up
- 22:49Speaker 1: in his body. My kid's buddy already took off crying.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Woman like the woman. My kids are out there and
- 22:57Speaker 1: his buddy's crying, and his buddy rides off on his bike.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I mean, what happened? And Jimmy's like, and you're going
- 23:08Speaker 1: over there right now, friend or no friend? Okay? Imagine
- 23:13Speaker 1: that that that he'd gone over to knock on the door,
- 23:17Speaker 1: and the guy that answered the door answers with a
- 23:19Speaker 1: cell phone and shames Jimmy and records him and then
- 23:25Speaker 1: records him going around to show the arrow, records him apologizing,
- 23:31Speaker 1: and then goes and post it to YouTube and says,
- 23:35Speaker 1: this is a boy named Jimmy and here's roughly where
- 23:38Speaker 1: he lives. Here's how to find him. He's a danger
- 23:41Speaker 1: with his arrows, complete disregard for human safety. And it
- 23:45Speaker 1: made my dog bark. No one would do that to
- 23:49Speaker 1: a person. Yeah, it's a war on Christmas. It's like,
- 23:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna get all round up about it. But just
- 24:00Speaker 1: like it just burns me. Man, Well then what the
- 24:02Speaker 1: neighbor do? Though, when Jimmy confessed, just what I thought,
- 24:07Speaker 1: So he thought it was funny. But okay, I just
- 24:09Speaker 1: don't shoot the ground anymore, like I said, it wasn't
- 24:14Speaker 1: like let me let me say something about So there's
- 24:20Speaker 1: this thing that there's a trend that happens with social
- 24:23Speaker 1: media and with where there's these isolated incidents that make
- 24:29Speaker 1: and it's a lot of times hound hunting look really
- 24:31Speaker 1: bad in the public eye. And and so this guy
- 24:35Speaker 1: got on there and started this petition to band hound
- 24:38Speaker 1: hunting Vermont. It's got a ton, it's got a ton
- 24:40Speaker 1: of traction of attraction. And but what's oh yeah, and
- 24:44Speaker 1: I guess is like social media following Now, it's like
- 24:46Speaker 1: social media failing like explodes, like explodes. It's a it's
- 24:51Speaker 1: a it's a one stop sell to tell someone that
- 24:54Speaker 1: has no history with hunting, no history with hounds, no
- 24:58Speaker 1: history with rural life. It the one step cell to
- 25:01Speaker 1: say these hillbillies out there are using dogs to hunt bears.
- 25:07Speaker 1: That equals bad because they got radio collars like sophisticated hillbillies,
- 25:13Speaker 1: which is the worst. It's a much harder cell to
- 25:17Speaker 1: take someone with no historical understanding of why would someone
- 25:22Speaker 1: use a dog to hunt a bear? They have. It's
- 25:25Speaker 1: it's a it's a five or ten steps cell for
- 25:27Speaker 1: me to say, you know, to talk about the historical
- 25:32Speaker 1: um the historical aspects of humans hunting with dogs and
- 25:35Speaker 1: the and I bet if you went and interviewed this houndsman,
- 25:38Speaker 1: I bet money that he's got family history of his
- 25:42Speaker 1: family using dogs in Vermont for years from there or
- 25:46Speaker 1: wherever he's from. But he's just it's a harder cell
- 25:54Speaker 1: to make someone even begin to understand bear hunting with hounds,
- 25:58Speaker 1: because does he think, does he think, like, you know,
- 26:00Speaker 1: like should the Cherokee not hunt with like the Cherokee
- 26:04Speaker 1: hunter bears a dog? For sure? They not be doing that?
- 26:06Speaker 1: Is that naughty if they put a collar on it
- 26:09Speaker 1: because they want it back at night? Yeah, Yeah, here's
- 26:13Speaker 1: a good story. You get more to say about that, Clay.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I'm good. That's a little sophisticated for the book of Chetakeo. Yeah,
- 26:21Speaker 1: you could probably put some kind of short in there,
- 26:26Speaker 1: like a little bar. The book of Chedaka could have
- 26:29Speaker 1: a little sidebars, a little things that happened. That would
- 26:32Speaker 1: be great etiquette. Great etiquette would be if you live
- 26:34Speaker 1: in a place where they use hunting dogs. If you
- 26:37Speaker 1: see a hunting dog, what do you do? Say hi
- 26:39Speaker 1: to it? If you if dogs are on your land, Yeah,
- 26:44Speaker 1: and typically you don't want to do anything to them.
- 26:48Speaker 1: If they have if they have a tracking collar, and
- 26:50Speaker 1: the dog looks in good health, just don't mess with it.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Mm hmm. I mean if the dog. Yeah, if the dog,
- 26:57Speaker 1: somebody knows exactly where that dog is in there trying
- 27:00Speaker 1: to get it back, if it's in some place it's
- 27:02Speaker 1: not supposed to be. If the gentleman, if the farmer
- 27:05Speaker 1: guy at the dark farmer gold Shaw farm, we will
- 27:10Speaker 1: fly you out. We will put you in a hotel,
- 27:13Speaker 1: full treatment. Did we give our special do we give
- 27:16Speaker 1: special guests? Hey, it's a nice package. Mr Goldshaw up
- 27:23Speaker 1: in a hotel. Come on the podcast, tell the story
- 27:26Speaker 1: and maybe I'll be like, yeah, you're right, that's a
- 27:28Speaker 1: good point. I don't remember, did you What about the houseman.
- 27:34Speaker 1: We're not inviting the houseman. I can't have both ought
- 27:38Speaker 1: at once. I mean, we already interviewed him for the
- 27:39Speaker 1: We already interviewed Judge Judy. We'll set and we'll set
- 27:45Speaker 1: it up like a car. And this guy, I'm not
- 27:49Speaker 1: I'm all for his story because we already interviewed the houndsman. Yeah,
- 27:53Speaker 1: we know what he did. I'm just saying he the
- 27:57Speaker 1: housemand thought he was up stay and he thought he
- 28:01Speaker 1: was He's the it's everything like, he's the head of
- 28:04Speaker 1: the local Hundsman's Association, and the the farm guy acted
- 28:08Speaker 1: condescending about the existence of days. Yes, there actually is
- 28:12Speaker 1: a thing like that's naughty. It's ignorance. That's the story
- 28:17Speaker 1: of ignorance. He's a part of the Duck Farmers Association,
- 28:20Speaker 1: and yes there is a thing like Ope, he comes up.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I'll be way ass nicer, super nice. Do you guys
- 28:41Speaker 1: listen to the show when you're not here? Where are
- 28:43Speaker 1: you on the show? When we talked about the alligator
- 28:45Speaker 1: that had the projectile points in his stomach, which is
- 28:47Speaker 1: the craziest thing in the world. But I was somewhere
- 28:51Speaker 1: when I heard that story. Well, I don't know if
- 28:54Speaker 1: his Prince of Wales or on this trip. Just recently,
- 28:57Speaker 1: a guy found h alligator's parents. I don't know this
- 28:59Speaker 1: thing he knows all about. Apparently alligators eat rocks okay
- 29:04Speaker 1: for their digestion or there something that there's even a
- 29:07Speaker 1: term for the rock. He was a guy found alligator
- 29:10Speaker 1: and alligator had full on one or two projectile points
- 29:15Speaker 1: in his stomach, like ancient stone projectile points. That's interesting.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Eating junk on the bottom of the swamp. Well, here's
- 29:24Speaker 1: a weird deal. And there's even a picture of it.
- 29:26Speaker 1: A fishing guide from montalk rode In he had a
- 29:29Speaker 1: client in the early two thousand tents he took a
- 29:32Speaker 1: client cod fishing. One of the clients was Joe Lean
- 29:37Speaker 1: l e I n Line Lean Joe Lene, Joe Lee.
- 29:44Speaker 1: That's all I would do when he was around. That's
- 29:47Speaker 1: his first and last name, Joan Joe Joe Lean l
- 29:52Speaker 1: e I n. Unfortunately, dude, he's gotta be so sick
- 29:57Speaker 1: of that joke. Man. Uh, this guy was really cool
- 30:01Speaker 1: that the guy like joelne a lot, because um, he's
- 30:05Speaker 1: a client to like to clean everybody's fish just to
- 30:08Speaker 1: save work for the god. He's cleaning one of the
- 30:13Speaker 1: cod and find something weird in his stomach and it's
- 30:16Speaker 1: like he a cod with a big gold nugget in
- 30:20Speaker 1: its stomach. Wow, someone dropped it. I don't know, like
- 30:26Speaker 1: a rugged looking gold nugget about half the size of
- 30:32Speaker 1: the z on a court size zip block bag. That's
- 30:36Speaker 1: an interesting descriptor well, it's because it's in a ziplock
- 30:39Speaker 1: bagsture in the picture. Oh okay, dang wow. So are
- 30:47Speaker 1: we going to the question of whose gold nugget is it? Us?
- 30:51Speaker 1: There's yeah, well there's whose gold sure? I mean, is
- 30:54Speaker 1: the guy that founded the guy that caught the fish?
- 30:57Speaker 1: I would say that it's definitely the guy that caught
- 30:59Speaker 1: the fish. I would say, is the guy who claimed
- 31:01Speaker 1: it he's doing and the guy who checked his stomach.
- 31:04Speaker 1: It's not a lot of people. Let's say you meet,
- 31:07Speaker 1: you're out fishing. We've done that, and you catch catch
- 31:13Speaker 1: your big halbert and we opened it up and it's
- 31:15Speaker 1: got a million dollars in it. But I'm the one
- 31:18Speaker 1: that splits its stomach open. You've caught it. I slit
- 31:21Speaker 1: his stomach open. But you're saying that that's not my
- 31:24Speaker 1: million dollars. I think we'd split it, but that'd be
- 31:28Speaker 1: generous this guy, this guy was putting in a lot
- 31:32Speaker 1: of effort more than just the one fish, right, I
- 31:35Speaker 1: bet you if it went to court, like to Judge Judy,
- 31:39Speaker 1: the gold nugget would go to the fisherman. I think
- 31:42Speaker 1: so because he owned it was his fish and legally,
- 31:45Speaker 1: like think about illegally, had that fish been taken illegally,
- 31:48Speaker 1: it would have been his responsibility and it's his legal
- 31:51Speaker 1: property by like it's it was property to the state
- 31:55Speaker 1: he caught it. It then transferred to like his legal property.
- 31:59Speaker 1: That's why I think is to make a great Judge
- 32:01Speaker 1: Judy type figure on the show. That'd be a good show.
- 32:07Speaker 1: We should judge Stevie, dude, we should make a show.
- 32:11Speaker 1: It's like just a matter if we can find enough
- 32:13Speaker 1: people fighting about stuff. Yeah, it sounds like we may
- 32:17Speaker 1: we may need to take this off of the podcast,
- 32:19Speaker 1: but this is a good podcast idea something about right
- 32:22Speaker 1: now you and we just comb the world for people
- 32:26Speaker 1: and fights about like whose buck is it? Like I
- 32:29Speaker 1: hit it in the knee and then three days later
- 32:32Speaker 1: my cousin got it hunting. I feel like it's my
- 32:35Speaker 1: book hunting spots, Like you know, we're gonna get to
- 32:39Speaker 1: one of those whom you should hunt here, kind of
- 32:40Speaker 1: like when Jordan put me in and then and the
- 32:43Speaker 1: Chatti book could be like the rule book that Steve would. Yeah,
- 32:47Speaker 1: we can do the whole combo thing. Guess what they
- 32:50Speaker 1: call that fishing spot now? Joe passed away just recently,
- 32:53Speaker 1: the angler Joelene Joe Lene passed away. I guess they
- 32:57Speaker 1: named that fishing spot Joey nuggets. That's the fish spot, dude.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Nobody's tried to claim the gold nugget. I lost that. No,
- 33:09Speaker 1: it's not a real descript No, it might be a
- 33:11Speaker 1: hard sell. You lose the raw material. It's then back
- 33:17Speaker 1: into the natural world. It's anybody now, my friend, I've
- 33:20Speaker 1: seen a nugget. I've seen a nugget similar to that.
- 33:22Speaker 1: And it was my friend uh Ron Layton, who was
- 33:27Speaker 1: on this show years ago. His late wife Joan had
- 33:32Speaker 1: a bunch of gold jewelry, not a bunch of small
- 33:35Speaker 1: amount of gold jewelry. But their house burnt down and
- 33:38Speaker 1: Ron went in there after the house burnt down and
- 33:41Speaker 1: went over to where he figured the jewelry was and
- 33:45Speaker 1: found a glob of congealed gold that the earrings and
- 33:49Speaker 1: whatnot had all melted and came in just this like
- 33:52Speaker 1: kind of amorphous blob of gold, and so Joan drilled
- 33:57Speaker 1: a whole nat She wore that around her neck. M
- 34:00Speaker 1: it was Oliver jewelry. That's interesting. Speaking of nuggets, guy
- 34:08Speaker 1: rolling in, Um, how come people don't eat squirrel nuts
- 34:13Speaker 1: squirrel oysters. I've never done that, and they're big enough
- 34:19Speaker 1: for I mean, not a fox squirrel. Yeah, he's saying that,
- 34:24Speaker 1: talks about how it seems like quite a little morsel,
- 34:27Speaker 1: and he's wondering if we've ever eaten him, and I like,
- 34:30Speaker 1: I have not neither. Uh. It takes a lot to
- 34:34Speaker 1: make a You know, my wife's been shelling a lot
- 34:37Speaker 1: of peas and beans, and it's amazing how many, how
- 34:40Speaker 1: big of a pile of beans you gotta get a meal.
- 34:43Speaker 1: That's a good point. I'm thinking about, like size of
- 34:48Speaker 1: a bean. I will see the Rocky Mountain testicles. You
- 34:53Speaker 1: gotta eat them fresh. I got a branding that you
- 34:56Speaker 1: don't like them frozen. No. We went to that testy
- 35:00Speaker 1: testical festival that all time, and they'd stockpile for the masses,
- 35:04Speaker 1: you know, frozen. Yeah, because yeah, they weren't. They didn't
- 35:07Speaker 1: have that. They had it in September. They didn't. It
- 35:09Speaker 1: wasn't during Brandon season, and that was different experience from
- 35:13Speaker 1: I always like those, though not the not the test
- 35:16Speaker 1: of chicken fried and catch up. Jordan's all about chicken fryed. Yeah,
- 35:21Speaker 1: they're good, fresh, but not stockpiled and frozen. And I'd
- 35:25Speaker 1: imagine the same with the squirrels. Jordan, how can you
- 35:27Speaker 1: never said anything about what your take is about the
- 35:29Speaker 1: guy that the Because you're you're, you're you come from
- 35:33Speaker 1: a long line of cattle ranchers, what's your take on
- 35:36Speaker 1: that whole dog thing? The dog thing? Um, give me
- 35:39Speaker 1: the landowner perspective, oh man, the land arm perspective. I
- 35:44Speaker 1: think like you should have. I think you made the
- 35:48Speaker 1: point you should have like a I want to say,
- 35:50Speaker 1: a soft spot. But the guys just trying to go
- 35:52Speaker 1: get his dogs, like he's not gonna trying to do
- 35:55Speaker 1: anything crazy extra. I mean, I don't think he had
- 35:59Speaker 1: any he didn't vous motives. Yeah, yeah, I mean that's
- 36:05Speaker 1: kind of what I think. If yeah, I just I
- 36:07Speaker 1: hate to return to it. But if the if the
- 36:08Speaker 1: story had been did all of a sudden the dark guy,
- 36:12Speaker 1: he's like, come oh oh back and runs back there
- 36:15Speaker 1: and there's some guys skinning a bear on his property.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Entirely different, different story, But then it'd come down to
- 36:22Speaker 1: that posting thing. Either way, that's not We'll not rehash
- 36:25Speaker 1: all that COVID making the news big time. We see.
- 36:28Speaker 1: This is where I don't think the show gets enough
- 36:30Speaker 1: credit because we've been talking about deer having COVID for
- 36:33Speaker 1: months now. There's all this hooplah, people being like, you
- 36:38Speaker 1: shouldn't go deer hunt, Beau, You're gonna get COVID from deer.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I'm like, y'all don't know. As I can attest, you
- 36:45Speaker 1: don't need to go deer hunt to get COVID. So
- 36:50Speaker 1: they're like, this guy's like, I always like to eat
- 36:52Speaker 1: deer tongues, but now I'm afraid I'm canna get COVID
- 36:54Speaker 1: from eating the tongue. It's like, I don't know, man,
- 36:59Speaker 1: I just you gotta cook it to us and fifty
- 37:03Speaker 1: degrees and he kills it. So here's a quote from
- 37:06Speaker 1: our article at the Mediator dot com. Here's a quote
- 37:08Speaker 1: from it, The risk of why till deer transmitting the
- 37:10Speaker 1: virus back to humans appears to be low. Although approven
- 37:13Speaker 1: instance of dear to human transmission is yet to occur,
- 37:16Speaker 1: the risk must be considered. Hunters should take precautions when
- 37:20Speaker 1: handling harvests the deer in the field, particularly tissues. Not
- 37:24Speaker 1: that it's boring. Um, you can wear a glove, you
- 37:28Speaker 1: can wear a mask when you're it's just come on,
- 37:33Speaker 1: mm hmm, right, you know, come on. The last thing
- 37:38Speaker 1: on my mind. True zoonotic diseases. Though the idea that
- 37:43Speaker 1: they're carrying the same disease to us is is kind
- 37:46Speaker 1: of spooky because we all know that, like if chronic
- 37:51Speaker 1: wasting ever transmitted to it would be major. That's why
- 37:57Speaker 1: I'm a big proponent of doing everything we can to
- 38:00Speaker 1: slow the spread of chronic wasting disease. Yeah, well, I'm
- 38:07Speaker 1: just saying that. The here's what. I'm not a doctor.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I don't know if you knew that. Just I just
- 38:17Speaker 1: feel personally, I'm at a place and I'm not I'm
- 38:21Speaker 1: not I'm not going out on a limb here because
- 38:23Speaker 1: this is a I keep seeing editorials. I even saw
- 38:26Speaker 1: an editorial in the New York Times basically to this
- 38:28Speaker 1: point that there's a there will be a point at
- 38:32Speaker 1: which we've done about everything we can do for covida.
- 38:38Speaker 1: There's a vaccine. If you want to take it, take it.
- 38:41Speaker 1: You don't want to take it, that's your call. But
- 38:44Speaker 1: at a point we're just it. It'll be like the cold.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I don't, I just I personally, I'm not. I don't
- 38:53Speaker 1: know anything. I just I don't know what I read.
- 38:54Speaker 1: I just read stuff and analyze it whatever. I just
- 38:57Speaker 1: don't think the genie is going back in the bottle
- 38:58Speaker 1: here now, c w D. That's different. Like I like
- 39:03Speaker 1: catching COVID from a deer just seems I suppose already
- 39:07Speaker 1: had it twice anyway, mm hmmis from deer hunts once. Yeah, dude,
- 39:17Speaker 1: I'm a sucker for COVID if I get it unvaccinated,
- 39:20Speaker 1: I got a vaccinated. If you had killed that deer,
- 39:23Speaker 1: you might have got a COVID third time. But I
- 39:25Speaker 1: killed it, so I skinned it. You feel I feel good,
- 39:29Speaker 1: I feel strong. The worry, and this is a legitimate worry.
- 39:34Speaker 1: The worry is that, um, the worry is that this narrative,
- 39:40Speaker 1: that there will be this narrative about deer as dangerous
- 39:45Speaker 1: or deer as you know, you know I'm I'm personally
- 39:52Speaker 1: anti glove when it comes to skin and stuff. It's
- 39:57Speaker 1: probably dumb, and I'm ready to I'm ready to change
- 40:01Speaker 1: if someone gives me the correct, you know, a better perspective.
- 40:05Speaker 1: But yeah, Spencer new Heart, he always sends me a
- 40:08Speaker 1: picture of himself when he gets a deer wearing gloves,
- 40:12Speaker 1: because I think it just kind of ultimately makes you weak.
- 40:16Speaker 1: What if you're a great argument, What if you're allergic
- 40:19Speaker 1: to the deer here, just weak, then you should be
- 40:22Speaker 1: as funny sas Morris's not here because he's sick, so
- 40:28Speaker 1: he's weak. He's in a weakened tradition, and Clay has
- 40:31Speaker 1: revealed his total weakness set is allergic to the dander
- 40:34Speaker 1: on deer, so he needs the word. Here's my take
- 40:37Speaker 1: on gloves. As a guy that doesn't wear him. It
- 40:38Speaker 1: recognizes that you probably should. I can picture a world
- 40:42Speaker 1: in which you'd regret not having more in gloves, But
- 40:49Speaker 1: I can't picture world in which you'd regret having warned them.
- 40:54Speaker 1: This from a man who does not wear them. But
- 40:57Speaker 1: that's the thing that's always in my mind. Yeah, I'll
- 41:00Speaker 1: warr him if I have to skin um for some reason,
- 41:03Speaker 1: skin in a fox or kyote makes him put gloves. Well,
- 41:08Speaker 1: you know, remember Remy Remy Warren was dealing with the
- 41:13Speaker 1: dead head, had been in the sun a couple of days.
- 41:15Speaker 1: It was anti glove. Yeah, but gloves wouldn't any difference
- 41:18Speaker 1: because he cut his hand and just bacterial infection. Though
- 41:23Speaker 1: he didn't get something blood poison Can you get a disease?
- 41:27Speaker 1: You got blood poisoning from an old deadhead? But for
- 41:29Speaker 1: some reason did he start wearing gloves after that when
- 41:31Speaker 1: he'd processed just put the fear into him. Yeah, that's
- 41:34Speaker 1: what I mean. Here's an our dear disease. And this
- 41:37Speaker 1: is the one seems to not have any implications for
- 41:39Speaker 1: but but this is gonna Jordan, you'll be able to
- 41:41Speaker 1: speak to this one. Um episodic hemorrhagic disease e h D,
- 41:47Speaker 1: which a lot of people in in the hunting communities
- 41:50Speaker 1: will say like blue tongue, which is like a form
- 41:53Speaker 1: of or version of, but e h D. Um. If
- 41:57Speaker 1: you feel like you've been hearing a lot about e
- 41:59Speaker 1: h D lately, you have. They're pointing out that, uh,
- 42:05Speaker 1: north northeastern Nebraska had bad h D this year, real
- 42:08Speaker 1: bad h D this year. Uh, North Dakota had such
- 42:13Speaker 1: an outbreak they're trying to buy back deer tags right now.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Jordan lost one of her best bucks, probably to e
- 42:21Speaker 1: h D. I think probably he was laying next to
- 42:23Speaker 1: the water. They died by the creek. Wasn't shot. No,
- 42:28Speaker 1: I mean we haven't found one since, but I just
- 42:31Speaker 1: have an inkling. North Dakota is trying to buy back
- 42:33Speaker 1: thirty thousand deer tags in the western part of the state.
- 42:38Speaker 1: So e h D s is spread by a little gnat,
- 42:41Speaker 1: like a little midge of some sort. And the reason
- 42:44Speaker 1: they think it's popping up so bad right now, well,
- 42:47Speaker 1: says e h D and blue tongue. I I need
- 42:49Speaker 1: to like take five seconds at some point to understand
- 42:52Speaker 1: the the differences if there are between h D and
- 42:56Speaker 1: blue tongue. But it's spread from deer to do er
- 43:00Speaker 1: by certain biting midges or gnats. There's smaller mosquitoes um
- 43:06Speaker 1: and water plays into this because the midges are found
- 43:10Speaker 1: near water and it gives the animal a horrible fever.
- 43:17Speaker 1: So when there's an e h D outbreak, people find
- 43:19Speaker 1: all the dead deer out on pond the edges of
- 43:23Speaker 1: ponds in stock tanks in creeks along creeks, they just
- 43:29Speaker 1: because they get a horrible fever and try to go
- 43:31Speaker 1: cool off, and it kills them quick once it sets in.
- 43:35Speaker 1: But the drought, uh is congregating deer at water, so
- 43:44Speaker 1: it's it's able to jump more like you have you know,
- 43:48Speaker 1: isolated water sources. A lot of deer congregating around isolated
- 43:52Speaker 1: water sources, and so they're all getting infected more. And
- 43:54Speaker 1: you have it. And the drought is driving work worse
- 43:57Speaker 1: e H D outbreaks and when you get to e
- 43:59Speaker 1: H the outbreak a bad one. It's not uncommon to
- 44:01Speaker 1: carry off the deer's fatal if they get that thing. Yeah, yeah,
- 44:09Speaker 1: And the incubation period is like five to seven days,
- 44:11Speaker 1: and once they start getting the effects, it kills them
- 44:14Speaker 1: within forty eight hours. Laid it off from me again. Uh,
- 44:19Speaker 1: they said the incubation period could be anywhere. I think
- 44:22Speaker 1: it said from five to seven days, the internet said,
- 44:25Speaker 1: and then they start feeling ill and they're dead within
- 44:28Speaker 1: forty eight hours. So I said, when you find them,
- 44:30Speaker 1: they're they're not. They don't like shrivel up and die
- 44:33Speaker 1: like they just die. And then the outbreak what what
- 44:38Speaker 1: ends an outbreak is the onset of sub freezing temperature frost. Yeah,
- 44:43Speaker 1: you get a frost killed the bugs. What's stopped to
- 44:46Speaker 1: the hd um North Dakota second straight year that they've
- 44:50Speaker 1: been buying back, trying to buy back tags. They the
- 44:58Speaker 1: game and fished. Their department had one thousand reports of
- 45:03Speaker 1: dead deer after e h D surface in late August.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I always thought that h D hit harder on high
- 45:11Speaker 1: water years because there's just more midges. That was my Yeah,
- 45:17Speaker 1: And it seemed like when I was floating down the river,
- 45:22Speaker 1: like the what are them? What's that? Those are turkeys?
- 45:29Speaker 1: Rock for? It's really little short deer still in a
- 45:35Speaker 1: blacktail mode. Turkey's coming down the creek anyways. Find out
- 45:40Speaker 1: you have turkey hunts here, right, Jordan Turkey Yeah, spring Mary,
- 45:44Speaker 1: I kind of want you to not book up that
- 45:46Speaker 1: one year. I'll hold it here. They come right now,
- 45:49Speaker 1: people here calling the turkeys. Yeah you can book Yeah,
- 45:54Speaker 1: you can book a turkey hunt. You' booked out for
- 45:55Speaker 1: next year, right, booked out for two. Yeah, so this
- 45:58Speaker 1: upcoming spring, someone can still go to turkey hunt. No,
- 46:03Speaker 1: I'm full full, but you have room, yes, go on dirt. Sorry,
- 46:13Speaker 1: oh that's right, you were talking about Turkey's coming down here. Um,
- 46:18Speaker 1: I was saying floating knock down the Yellowstone high water ears.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Seems like you'd find mature bucks dead next to the water,
- 46:27Speaker 1: more so high water ears. I should point out that
- 46:31Speaker 1: this feller here the veterinarian for the North Dakota Game
- 46:35Speaker 1: and Fish Wildlife. So they're veterinarian Charlie Barnson, not Charlie Bronson.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Charlie Barnson. Isn't that that guy from I think of
- 46:44Speaker 1: the right guy you're thinking of, Charles Bronson? That, yeah,
- 46:48Speaker 1: not him. This is Charlie Bonson. He's just he's throwing
- 46:53Speaker 1: it out there. He says, he's said one theory could be.
- 46:57Speaker 1: So he's not acting like he's got it all figured out.
- 46:59Speaker 1: He's just you know, making an educated, humble man making
- 47:02Speaker 1: an educated point here that record breaking heat in October,
- 47:09Speaker 1: so instead of record breaking cold, which would be killing
- 47:11Speaker 1: all the midges, it's record breaking heat extended period of time.
- 47:14Speaker 1: They can get it. And he feels that the drought,
- 47:18Speaker 1: so record breaking heat in October created conditions favorable to
- 47:23Speaker 1: midges and more viral spread. And the other thing about
- 47:27Speaker 1: the low water is just the thing about concentration of
- 47:30Speaker 1: because it's communicable, right. It's like the same way malaria spreads.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Like malaria is the mosquito moves from one person to
- 47:37Speaker 1: the next person. So a mosquito bites a person and
- 47:39Speaker 1: mosquito bites another person. That's how malarias spread. That makes
- 47:43Speaker 1: I have a lot more sense. I could see that
- 47:45Speaker 1: being valid, Like there's more than just a low water
- 47:49Speaker 1: high water year, because like the river and the creek
- 47:52Speaker 1: never change, like those water levels never change year to year,
- 47:57Speaker 1: So it has to be something else to go along
- 48:00Speaker 1: with it, you know, attempts or yeah, I don't know, man,
- 48:04Speaker 1: I uh, that would be an interesting conundrum to sell
- 48:07Speaker 1: back your tag. You want to you want to be
- 48:11Speaker 1: like a team player, and you know they're there, and
- 48:14Speaker 1: imagine that you wait and wait and wait, you know,
- 48:15Speaker 1: and they all sudden like, yeah, I'm going to the
- 48:17Speaker 1: year man. And it's just to clarify their intent is
- 48:20Speaker 1: to reduce harvest, not to e H D dear or
- 48:23Speaker 1: not intend to reduce like that they issued tags like
- 48:27Speaker 1: you know, ever, you're making an educated guess about. You know,
- 48:30Speaker 1: you wait as long as you can. Your biologists are
- 48:32Speaker 1: out there doing their surveys you're like looking at conditions
- 48:35Speaker 1: and at some point you issue tags and you're like, Okay,
- 48:38Speaker 1: it looks good, we're gonna go with ten thou And
- 48:41Speaker 1: then what oct people are still buying the tags, right,
- 48:48Speaker 1: You're like and then all of a sudden they're go
- 48:50Speaker 1: seventent your deer. But you just you issued tags because
- 48:53Speaker 1: you thought and so they're going to hit them pretty hard.
- 48:55Speaker 1: And so then you're like, man, we gotta do something
- 48:57Speaker 1: to try to rein it back. And you know, they
- 49:02Speaker 1: put it to you voluntarily, like if you want, we'd
- 49:05Speaker 1: like to buy your take back? Yeah, how to put
- 49:09Speaker 1: little bonus on there? There's some lot of tags too,
- 49:13Speaker 1: you think it should be a bonus. Well, I'm just saying.
- 49:15Speaker 1: I mean like, if if you bought something for me
- 49:18Speaker 1: from twenty bucks and you wanted it back and you're
- 49:20Speaker 1: gonna pay me. If I sold you something for twenty bucks,
- 49:23Speaker 1: you wanted to buy it back for twenty bucks, I'd
- 49:26Speaker 1: be like I'll sell for no. Yeah, it's like an incentive,
- 49:33Speaker 1: you see what I'm saying. I don't think you would
- 49:35Speaker 1: do that because you're so you're like an honorable dude.
- 49:38Speaker 1: I feel like you'd let them have it. Back. Business
- 49:40Speaker 1: is business, teve Man. Then turkeys are still piling out.
- 49:47Speaker 1: That's a nice group of turkeys. Look at them going
- 49:53Speaker 1: into the other. Here's a good one. This is this
- 49:55Speaker 1: has Chatika implications. Luke from conduct Can, Kentucky, He's he's hunts,
- 50:04Speaker 1: he hunts public land, Kentucky. He's struggling with this. He's
- 50:10Speaker 1: got an interesting thing. And he thinks I'm gonna be
- 50:12Speaker 1: on his side, but I don't know that I'm totally
- 50:13Speaker 1: on his side. He's struggling with what he is deemed
- 50:16Speaker 1: to be squatters, which is a harsh word. Is he's
- 50:21Speaker 1: rubbed the wrong way about individuals who are putting their
- 50:23Speaker 1: stands out the night before, weeks before season, placing a
- 50:30Speaker 1: stand on public land. And he he hasn't Yeah, he
- 50:36Speaker 1: hasn't encountered with the guy that took it a little
- 50:38Speaker 1: too far. A guy not only puts his stand up,
- 50:41Speaker 1: a lease's bow in it. So he gets there and
- 50:48Speaker 1: it's like the stand and the bow, that's unusual you
- 50:54Speaker 1: doing that. It's like, let's just be frank, are you
- 50:58Speaker 1: putting the stand there that you just had to face
- 51:02Speaker 1: the facts. Anybody can understand. Yep, it's public land, it's
- 51:07Speaker 1: like there's regulation in most states about how long you
- 51:14Speaker 1: can put up a stand and leave it. Well, I mean,
- 51:19Speaker 1: what does it give you the spot? No, the guy
- 51:22Speaker 1: could get in a tree right beside you. Some states
- 51:24Speaker 1: you can't leave them, that's right. And in Arkansas on
- 51:27Speaker 1: on wildlife management areas, you have to have your name
- 51:31Speaker 1: written on the stand and your phone number and you
- 51:34Speaker 1: can only leave it there for a certain amount of days.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I want to say it's two weeks, so you could
- 51:38Speaker 1: go in early and put up a stand. It would
- 51:42Speaker 1: be legal. So I would say that there's law that's
- 51:45Speaker 1: probably prescribed that would that would give this guy. I mean,
- 51:50Speaker 1: I don't think there's there's As long as it's within
- 51:52Speaker 1: the time frame that they say you can leave a stand,
- 51:54Speaker 1: I'd say he's good. Well, his deal is this, let
- 51:59Speaker 1: me hit you with the other part of it and
- 52:00Speaker 1: you can speak to the whole thing. His deal, Like,
- 52:04Speaker 1: he's not saying you shouldn't be able to put a
- 52:06Speaker 1: stand out. He's talking about interactions with other hunters in
- 52:11Speaker 1: which someone feels that that makes it their spot. Yeah,
- 52:16Speaker 1: like he had when he had to run in with
- 52:17Speaker 1: the guy. He said, that's where my tree stand is.
- 52:20Speaker 1: That's where my bow is, so that's where I'm going.
- 52:25Speaker 1: I think if it's legal to leave a tree stand
- 52:29Speaker 1: overnight in a place, just because you left your bow
- 52:34Speaker 1: up there does not mean that's your spot. The guy,
- 52:38Speaker 1: the guy, the guy who walked in there with that
- 52:41Speaker 1: ground blind, did not know for sure that that guy
- 52:44Speaker 1: was going to come back, and he was there first,
- 52:47Speaker 1: so in my opinion, they both had a talk before
- 52:51Speaker 1: they hunted, which I think is smart to do. And
- 52:55Speaker 1: he saw a light coming and waited up for the
- 52:58Speaker 1: guy because he's like, I'm gonna wait up for him
- 53:01Speaker 1: for rather little detail. He waited up for the guy
- 53:03Speaker 1: coming behind him on the trail to be like, where
- 53:05Speaker 1: you going where? Here's where I'm going. And he's like, well,
- 53:07Speaker 1: here's where I'm going. He's like, no, you're not, because
- 53:08Speaker 1: I'm going there's my bows there. Yeah. And I mean,
- 53:11Speaker 1: I'm just going off of what I would do personally.
- 53:16Speaker 1: And let's say I were the guy who left my
- 53:19Speaker 1: bow in the tree stand, which I would not do.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Let's say I left the tree stand because it was
- 53:24Speaker 1: legal in that state, and I went the night before
- 53:26Speaker 1: and set it up, and I came and there's this
- 53:29Speaker 1: guy sitting there in the ground blind. Personally, I would
- 53:32Speaker 1: not hunt my tree stand. I may quick take it down,
- 53:36Speaker 1: but I would probably be like, listen, dude, you were
- 53:39Speaker 1: here first. You didn't know I was coming to hunt
- 53:41Speaker 1: my tree stand. I'm gonna go try and find if
- 53:46Speaker 1: you were coming. But he says there first. Either way,
- 53:49Speaker 1: you know what, if he did, I mean, the bow
- 53:51Speaker 1: was up there. So they probably made me figure some
- 53:53Speaker 1: guys coming back. You know, I would have done. I
- 53:55Speaker 1: would have left my kid up there, rotate them out.
- 53:59Speaker 1: You gotta got mondays and two, don't you move when
- 54:01Speaker 1: I come up in the morning, you can run back
- 54:04Speaker 1: to school. We would you have done, Steve. Here's the deal.
- 54:09Speaker 1: Here's why it's hard for me. It's like it just
- 54:11Speaker 1: depends on it depends on a lot, Like it depends
- 54:17Speaker 1: on like how much space, how tightly people are concentrated,
- 54:20Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Yeah, I mean there's a
- 54:22Speaker 1: lot of variable. It's just like if I look and
- 54:25Speaker 1: it's and it's like an old man barely coming down
- 54:28Speaker 1: the trail. You know, he's ninety eight years old. Sure, yeah,
- 54:31Speaker 1: I might be like, just you know, that's cool man.
- 54:33Speaker 1: It's you know, he's like I had to leave my
- 54:35Speaker 1: bowl there because I can only carry my one thing
- 54:37Speaker 1: at a time, and I don't know. I'm not gonna
- 54:39Speaker 1: be like, well, tough shit. It's just it's so circumstances.
- 54:43Speaker 1: It's so situational. It's so situational. Is it that there's
- 54:49Speaker 1: four acres of land and you go out and a
- 54:52Speaker 1: guy pre did his stand? You kind of in your
- 54:55Speaker 1: head like I don't know, man, like he's got to
- 54:58Speaker 1: stand there out let me go check. But maybe it's
- 55:01Speaker 1: that there's twelve stands on acres of land. There's nowhere
- 55:05Speaker 1: to go, and at a point you gotta be like, man,
- 55:08Speaker 1: I'm just gonna have to be that it's gonna be
- 55:09Speaker 1: first come, first serving, opening morning, because I can't untangle
- 55:13Speaker 1: everything that's going on out here. Are these are these
- 55:16Speaker 1: like legitimately here? Did some guy come in and put
- 55:18Speaker 1: all these up as a way to like claim the
- 55:20Speaker 1: whole thing? You just make a little judgment calls. I'm
- 55:24Speaker 1: a big fan of the hanging hunt and like take
- 55:27Speaker 1: it down just for those reasons and people not getting
- 55:30Speaker 1: lazy and forgetting their tree stands in the woods and
- 55:34Speaker 1: leaving them up, which happens all the time you see
- 55:36Speaker 1: it in Montana. Um, but Yeah, it's a lot of
- 55:41Speaker 1: great area. Like you saying, here's another one. Ain't right there,
- 55:46Speaker 1: Jordan's skipped a lot of stuff, a lot of stuff. Okay,
- 55:52Speaker 1: just to talk to you more. Uh, here's no and
- 55:55Speaker 1: this is this is another land on our dilemma. This
- 55:58Speaker 1: is this falls outside of otic because this is just
- 56:00Speaker 1: a whole different kind of peculiar thing. But it kind
- 56:02Speaker 1: of fits what we're talking about. Cren did a great
- 56:04Speaker 1: job of bundling all like krend and I'll talk about
- 56:07Speaker 1: things we want to talk about, and she bundled a
- 56:08Speaker 1: lot of these like private property things. They're property issues,
- 56:12Speaker 1: you know. The guy wrote in he lives in St. Francisville, Louisiana.
- 56:19Speaker 1: He owns four fifty acres north of his place, un
- 56:24Speaker 1: said property. There's a creek along said creek. There are
- 56:29Speaker 1: three grave sites from the eighteen hundreds. A feller name
- 56:35Speaker 1: John J. Austin, and his wife and daughter all buried there.
- 56:40Speaker 1: John J. Austen was a decorated veteran of the War
- 56:44Speaker 1: of eighteen twelve. You know, oh, you know what that
- 56:47Speaker 1: bigot song you to learn Chester in eighteen fourteen, took
- 56:51Speaker 1: a little trip, took a little took a little beans
- 56:56Speaker 1: and whoop the mighty British at the Battle New Orleans
- 56:59Speaker 1: ar guns so John J. Austen, John Jay Austen decorated
- 57:05Speaker 1: veteran in the War twelve, presumably from the from the
- 57:08Speaker 1: Battle of New Orleans. He dies, Okay, his wife dies.
- 57:15Speaker 1: He homesteaded on this fourres he dies. Um oh man,
- 57:23Speaker 1: this story really makes his own gravy. I forgot to
- 57:26Speaker 1: mention the feller that rode in his family's own this
- 57:29Speaker 1: place for a hundred years. They've always hosted these graves
- 57:36Speaker 1: on their place of the people that homestead of the place.
- 57:39Speaker 1: This feller dies. His wife dies of typhoid fever, daughter
- 57:43Speaker 1: dies of something else. No, his daughter died of type Listen,
- 57:46Speaker 1: everybody dies. All three of them died there. They are
- 57:50Speaker 1: on the property. This guy is on the place for
- 57:52Speaker 1: a hundred years. The historical society is leaning on him.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Two put a fence around the graveyard and build a
- 58:03Speaker 1: road into there so people could come and look at
- 58:06Speaker 1: the dead people's place. No way. He doesn't want the
- 58:12Speaker 1: general public to have that much access to her property.
- 58:15Speaker 1: It's on the back end of his place. They run
- 58:18Speaker 1: cattle there, they hunting there. In fact, the grave site
- 58:23Speaker 1: is real close to his daughter killed her first deer
- 58:25Speaker 1: last year. Just feels to him like just unnecessary. He's
- 58:34Speaker 1: one of what we what we would do. It was
- 58:35Speaker 1: a real clear kind of answer to this. Listen if
- 58:37Speaker 1: it was Abe Lincoln or something. Still, No, listen, honest Abe,
- 58:43Speaker 1: they took it a long time ago. Anyway, they wouldn't
- 58:46Speaker 1: be talking about it anymore. But let's say it turns
- 58:48Speaker 1: out that that's where honest Abe was buried. I'd be like, listen,
- 58:51Speaker 1: it's honest Abe, the great emancipator. Let's put a road in.
- 58:57Speaker 1: But just I don't know, and series a great h
- 59:00Speaker 1: John Jay Austin, God bless him. But I don't know
- 59:02Speaker 1: if that like if that of all, I don't know
- 59:05Speaker 1: if that warrants that, because then the next thing you
- 59:10Speaker 1: go to do, you know, like like you go to
- 59:13Speaker 1: do like some habitat work, like you're just gonna create
- 59:16Speaker 1: friction that's gonna burn you down the road. Well, what
- 59:19Speaker 1: you say if you don't want to be just a
- 59:20Speaker 1: total jerk, as you say, Hey, if this is your family,
- 59:24Speaker 1: I'll take you back in there anytime you want. Dude,
- 59:27Speaker 1: Judge Judy Bam. Maybe he should be running a book
- 59:30Speaker 1: called claic. So you should say that's a great solution,
- 59:35Speaker 1: clay That's what I think this gentleman should do. He
- 59:37Speaker 1: should say it even make it better if it has,
- 59:42Speaker 1: Like if there's some emotional attachment here, family, you're a historian,
- 59:48Speaker 1: just please reach out. We will get you taken care of.
- 59:51Speaker 1: But you don't want just people coming back there because
- 59:54Speaker 1: they can and they got no business being there. Don't
- 59:57Speaker 1: know these people what he put a road in there.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: You lose some of that integrity of like the actual
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: cool old grave site to and stuff. And then you
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: got the grave diggers coming in and me eater super
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: fans claiming their family to go check out this grave site.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: You got a guy being like, it's my grandma, and
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I was thinking about how I'd like to visitor on
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: opening day lay still doping day was very special and
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I'd like to be there to honor that with my
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: old rifle. Um. Yeah, I don't know. That's a good solution,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: I think. So that's good, clay Man. We gotta do
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: a judge, Judy show Man. Does your verdict hold up
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: when you decide guilty not guilty? Well that's the hard
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: part because then you have to have the historical society
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: be down here. You have to have like there talking
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: about the duck guy and the bear guys sitting here,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: and they have to all agree six D all right
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: to duck Farmers of America. George. I got a couple
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: of questions for you. You know, I know you haven't
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: been long, live terribly long. This place is where you
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: live has been your family for a very long time. Yeah,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: thirty nine. My grandpa bought it. Grandpa bought um uh.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Do you feel that you've watched like we're hunting white tails.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Do you feel that over the of course, through your
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: family's experience that um, white tails have kind of like
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: displaced because we see mule deer very few we see
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: like we've seen like a mule deer buck, maybe two
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: mule deer bucks. Do you feel that on white tails
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: are kind of have the upper hand here. I think so.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: I think it's definitely changed. I don't know if it's
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: just like we've definitely seen the white tail population rise
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: and with that has been like an equal decline in
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: mule deer. And I remember there being like nicer mule
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: deer bucks here when I was like m hmm, like
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: upper grade school, maybe middle school. But yeah, it's definitely
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: it's not that way anymore. We have a hard time
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: seen like honestly, like the buck we saw last nights,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: one of the better mule deer I've seen out here,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: and like, oh that was three or four years. Yeah,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: and then uh, what about pronghorn, that's that's shifted to.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: I think some of that has to do with I
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: think that they're winning to agriculture fields and they're not
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: coming back, They're just staying there there. Yeah. I mean
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: even even when I was in high school, we had
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: like a huntable population, I would say. But so you
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: think like like egg coming in and you know, you
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: have you have all these irrigation you have like nineteen
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: uh pivots, it's a cluster. Yeah, you have nights like
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: I think there's like four center pivot center pivots per
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: or four per section or section or something like that.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: So it was nineteen of them to the to the
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: what south of you south that that in your father's
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: you know, when your father was your age, those weren't there.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: That's why I understand at least there definitely wasn't as
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: many of them, and that change definitely wasn't Yeah, I
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: think that that changed stuff a lot. I think that
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: we saw the effects of that even a little bit
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: on this hunt, where normally the deer would just live
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: like on the river, and maybe there wouldn't be as
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: many of them, but they would still live on the
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: river and in the hills and stuff. But they all
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: suck into those pivots and it's hard to tougher to
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: hunt them. Another new thing. It's interesting. So the other day,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: while I was writing my song up on the hill
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: looking watching you guys hunt a song about me? Or
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: weren't Glenn know the song about should have been, Yeah,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: it's all about you. Yeah that I'm involved. We saw
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: there help me. We saw a white tail deer, We
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: saw a mule deer. We saw bison, and now these
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: weren't wild bison, but they to the eye appeared to
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: be wild bison on a big land far away. We
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: saw wild elk, We saw thirty elk come through. We
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: saw wild turkey. The only thing that we didn't see
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: that you just described was an But I mean, that's
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: a pretty I've seen. I've seen white tail, mule deer,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: pronghorn elk I'm talking about, yeah, you know. And then
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: a bunch of things that aren't yeh that I mean,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: that's a pretty good that's a pretty good swash. And
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: then then the bison off in the distance, which, like
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: I said, all n't wild, but for the vast majority
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: of our land mass here, that's what that's the best
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: you can hope for. So just pretty neat, pretty neat.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Was that was that feller that killed that big elk here?
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Your first ELK client? It was, yeah, you guys killed
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: big bolt. We did. We got tell about how that
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: whole thing is going down because those definitely haven't been
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: here a long time. No, I was like, I think
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: just Nebraska as a whole has been seen an uptick.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: I think they added like I don't want to say fifty,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: but it was something like that, like fifty more ELK
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: tags this year, just to the whole state. Um, but
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: it's resident only hard to draw once in a lifetime,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Once in a lifetime. So how did you get hooked
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: up with the ELK client? He just called me? Honestly,
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: I don't even know. I think I learned after that
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: he called everybody else, and everybody else was full. But
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: so we got a hold of me and asked if
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: we could make How is he like picking where like
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: it's statewide or not state No, it's yeah, it's unit specific.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Yeah of course, not statewide. Yeah that makes sense. So
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: he had a unit and he was calling around, Yeah,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: called you. I think he was Yeah, I think he
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: was late to the game and told me that a
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: bunch of other people were already full. So he called
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: me and asked we had a decent like if we
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: had a good chance, And I said we I thought
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: we did, and yeah, shot up like a three. Was
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: he pretty happy? He was super happy? You have fun? Yeah,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: he was super happy. Yeah, it was good. It was
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: honestly the first evening, the whole deal. Yeah, And and
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: it was like the elk. I would not say, we're
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: like residing on the place they were passing through. So
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: it was just it was a huge waiting game. Were
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: you just sweating it going into that? Oh yeah, how
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: long is it? Se uh? It starts to see it
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: ends and it's like five weeks. So he had time
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: to try something else. Yeah, yeah, he had some time.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: We didn't get in on the opener. I was on
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: like another hunt, I think, and so I couldn't get
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: here until like the very end of September um and
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: it starts the third week of September. So since that
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: was just your first ELK client that you have, just
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: kind of like make up a price pretty much. I
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: just looked at what everybody else was doing and like
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: got right in line what I thought they were doing.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Can you explain what how the state requires? Like they
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: have a they have a landowner thing, but like the
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: requirement is interesting. Yeah, so the landowner wants to enroll,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: you have to prove from what I've I've been working
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: with a game and fish guy to try to get
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: us in like as a landowner. There's like a landowner
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: section that's like north of town that's like all the
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: landowners just automatically they can apply for land and attack.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: But us, where we're kind of out of like the
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: main zone of where I would say most of the
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: elk are or have been, we have to apply like individually,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: so we have to like enroll the ranch into the
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: landowner program, and then all the family members can do it. Yeah,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: if they're directly related to the owner, they can. Yeah,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: they can apply. And it's something like for every six
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: and forty acres, like two family members can apply or
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: something like that. And it's still a long shot. It's
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: still a long shot. Yeah. And uh so you have
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: to prove that you have elk on your place for
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: I think it's three of the four seasons. Yeah. Yes,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: you have to prove cam photos like what do you
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: got to have? Yeah, pretty much trail camp photos like
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: any video, any of that stuff. I'm gonna use trail
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: camp photos just because it's day stamped and whatnot, So
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: you can prove that kind of thing. But the the
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: interesting thing about being in the landowner deal is you can,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: once you prove that you hold elk on your place,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: if you draw a tag, your tag is good for
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: all of the Bordeaux unit or all of the unit
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: that you're land is in, not just your land, which
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: is you can if you had that's different than you could. Yeah, dear,
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: you have to stay on your own place. Um. You
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: know those like hostage things where you have the hostage
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: holding the newspaper. You gotta get like an elk hold
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: in the newspaper to prove when he was there, you know.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Huh Yeah, I wonder how to what degree did you
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: gather it's pretty friendly or like to what degree did
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: they trying to put the screws to you. You know,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: I just sort of saying, like, no, I mean, because
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: you can set the trail camp whatever the hell do
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: you want. Yeah, I don't know. I don't think I've
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: gotten that far into it. It'll be interested, they d
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: like a real good faith thing, or they're like, are
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: you sure? Well, it sounds like if somebody was trying
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: to fabricate that and couldn't prove it, they wouldn't have
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Elk clear anyway, so they couldn't kill one anyway. Did
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: you see what I'm saying. It's good for the whole unit. Yeah,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: it's good for the whole unit. So if we drew
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: as a landown, we caught clean that paying attention I'm
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: trying to follow, man, But yeah, you can go for
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: the whole unit. So it's interesting they haven't really I mean,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: like twenty question me yet. They just put me on
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: the list and told me to like start gathering some
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: things to prove that Elk has been through there, or
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: we hold Elk at least some of the year, and
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: then they would get ahold, oh yeah, you guess my witnesses,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: you got fall, you got fall held up? Yeah, well,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: you know it would be great here's here's keep this
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: in mind. You know how that shed we found them,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: you haven't picked up yet, so there you know the
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: story and told us about. We've glassed up shed twice
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: and she hasn't walked over and got it yet. You
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: need to go over there because you know when they
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: like the date range that it dropped to get a
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: real nice picture how it's kind of settled into the
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: sand in two it's in C two and be like, well,
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: you know he was here in March. Whatever. M hmm.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: I like that. That's good. That's detective work right there.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: But man, this is strong. We're building a strong case.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Is it brown or is it white? It's white. It's
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: on your land though. Really, yeah, y'all been holding back.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Y'all should have told us this. Yeah we found that
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: first uh first morning. Yeah, the first morning we would
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: have had time to go get it. I feel like
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: this this is a little bit off topic, but this
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: is I'm I feel like I need to bring this
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: up because we're hunting in two different you know, like
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: we're going hunting and you're going hunting. So when we
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: come back together, I'm kind of a stickler on this.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: In the camps that I run, okay, is that there
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: needs to be a formal meeting. I saw you do
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: that to give information, because like I'll pass by Jordan
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: and be like, what y'all see, and you know, she'll
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: say something. Then you'll pass by and say something totally different,
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: and then the cameraman go, well, this happened, and no
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: one knows what's going on. So that's why. That's why
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: I like when you come back, it's like and it's
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: like Steve was gonna tell us what happened today, and
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: that's where we would have known about the elk. It's
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: the last day of the hunt this case, and pointed
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: to Clays. Yeah, you're right here, we are. We all
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: knew it. You didn't know it. My hunt would have
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: been more robust the last three days if I had
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: known there was an elk glass and that sucker up
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: or trying to y'all took this from me. It's still tonight.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: When you guys get a deer here, um, you have
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: to go down to the check station. Yeah, that's a
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: rifle season thing. That's what that's for. Yeah, talk to
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: you what all like, why and what all happens and
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: where you go? That might be interesting is a good
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: it's probably a good question. We didn't do it last year.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: Um with COVID and stuff. They just check stations. Yeah,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: muzzle order, you don't have to do check station and
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: archer you don't have to do check station. You just
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: call in and like you tell them like male or female,
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: white tailer, mule deer. If it was a like if
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: the buck had more than eleven inches spread or something
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: like that, and they pull a tooth. No, So why
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: do they need the whole thing? Why do they need
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: the whole thing there? They don't take any like biometrics.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Do they take any measurements or anything. The bucks are
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: two and a half years old. Yeah, that's the thing
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: that happens. He didn't take a CWD thing, did he know?
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: I told him he could and he didn't. Yeah. He
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: just cut the he like cut the side of the
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: mouth open and he looked and he said, look like
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: sharp teeth two and a half years old. Didn't pluck one,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: didn't touch it and didn't pull a gland. No, they
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: just want to have it be that, I think so.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: And then he puts the metal. So there is a
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: thing that goes on down there, But they're not like
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: really maximizing information that could be pulled from these deers. No,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: I've seen them sometimes like they'll cut and like pull
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: a gland assume for CW. But I don't other than
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: that's pretty much all. I mean. My kids went, we
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: took a deer and after you season, we took a
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: deer and new check station and you could, uh, they
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: grab a tooth and they we'll pull a gland. Yeah,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: we missed out on the gland pulln we already skinned
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: the head. Oh yeah, I wasn't think about I would
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: say that one of the glands if I have been
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: thinking about it. In the Braski guys, Um, everything's over
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: the counter. Yeah. The rifle tags are capped so and
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: they are a unit specific so like muzzloader season over
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: the counter. I don't I don't even know if there's
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: a cap, and if there is, I don't think it's
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: ever been met. And that is statewide. There are certain
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: like restrictions on like mule deer in the Pine Ridge area.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: I know you can't shoot a muled your dough like
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: on the north side of the river here. Um, and
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: then I think you can only you can still shoot
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: a muled your dough on this side of the river. Yeah,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: on the south side, but not on the north side.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: I don't know if that's a great idea. Yeah, so
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: then you might be speeding along the inevitable man. Yeah,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: So that's one thing. And then there's like certain areas
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: in southern Nebraska where there's like mule dear conservation areas
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: where you can't shoot a mule deer inside of them
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: at all, or you have to draw for a buck
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: tag in those archeries the same way, but rifle, they
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: make you their unit specific and they are capped and
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: they sell out pretty damn fast. The mule deer tags
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: on the north side of the river soiling like two
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: days got do you guide those? Um? Yeah? I I
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: kind of shy away from the mule deer thing just
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: because of what we're talking about. Like a lot of
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: the guys I want to shoot mule deer, you know,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: they want like a good representation of a buck, and
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: I just don't think that I can't like promise that
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: the type of the deal. So if they want to
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: shoot a mule deer, like, we'll hunt for a mule deer,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: but I sell a white tail hunt. And then I
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: do like a trophy fee type thing on top of
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: the mule deer, or on top of if they shoot
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: a mule deer just to make people more conscious of, like,
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: don't shoot a two point type of a deal just
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: to shoot a mule deer. I'm trying to help us
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: out there. But you know, she killed a real big
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: mule there a couple of years ago. I don't know
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: if you want to talk about. You killed a real
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: big one this year Idaho. Yeah, so you killed a
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: big one in this place. He was like high one nineties. Yeah,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: really bought by the highway. M hmm. So he wasn't
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: even down here, but killed it with a bow. Yeah.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: Is that one of the ones in the hallway? It's
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: a picture. Yeah. I don't know if there's a picture
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: of him up there or not. There's some big mealies pictures. Yeah,
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: you shot that one with the bow out here. That's
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: doing something. Man. What did you creep up on it?
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Have a blind little canyon creeped? Really? Mm hmm. That's
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: cool man. And now you have a big stomper out
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: in Idaho this year. I got a good buck in Idaho. Yeah.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: How big was this one? We never I he's probably
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: like a mid one sixties buck and never we haven't
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: measured him. He's in getting a yuro Mount currently Freedom Mount,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: Freedom Mountain. That's right, I forgot about that. Um do
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: you know this about your state? This feels like a
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: Western state, right private. Yeah, it doesn't surprise me. That's
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: tough going actually surprises me a little. This price and parks. Yeah,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: it's pretty much probably you run into that too, like
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: like when you see Texas, you know, yeah, I mean
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: they even sold off their school trust lands like and
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: then but they have like a so they'll have like
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: a certain what I was like two percent or whatever
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: the hell it is public but Great Bend National Park
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: m M. You can't hunt in there anyways. You can't
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: hunt anyways. Yeah, so it's kind of yeah, not like
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: what good is it? But it doesn't mean from a
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: hunter perspective. So you go like, oh, there's least some
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: public land, and then the bulk of public land is
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: park account anyway, So you probably got a situation like that.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: There are some parks, but most of the I think
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: some of like most of the public lands all in
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: the north west corner of the state, like Shattern Area,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Harrison and then it gets hammered. And that's all like
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: in the Pine Ridge unit, so on the north side
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: of the river. That's where some public is. Yeah that's where. Yeah,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: that's where a lot of it is. But this state, um,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: they have Open Fields and Waters program, which is cool. Yeah,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: that's like putting your like CRP or whatever. You can
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: open acres and that forty acres enrolled. And something that
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: I've never heard of called the Stubble Access Program. Haven't
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: heard of that either. After you harvest wheat and milo
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: and whatnot, it's people can go in and hunt birds
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: in western Nebraska on the Stall Bowl an adjacent habitat.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Oh that's not a bad problem. It's very specific. It is.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: That's harsh your crop. Harveish your crop, guys, and come
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: in and hunt the stubble fields. But they keep people
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: out of it when the crop is still standing there.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: Nothing nice, Yeah, for sure, bad approved. What's that? More turkeys?
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: You got that? All right? Listen, we got a real problem.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: We're running out of our hunt time. Steve has shot
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: here yet, but you know, you know, I don't care.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: I've had a great time. Yeah cool, I'm glad I've
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: had one of the better times I've ever had doing anything.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: It's been humbling for me because I'm I don't think
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: before this a rifle hunt's ever gone over two days. Really,
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I just kind of assume you can tell you're sweating it. Yeah,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: we saw, but here's the thing. We could have shot
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: bucks because shot one a minute ago. That's true, we
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: could have shot smaller, dear, But and there was one
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: that we watched for a while and you're like, Steve,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: let's get serious. What do you think about that buck? Yeah,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: there was a point I kept looking at him and
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: I was like, I mean, it's not a bad, dear,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: but it's just we've all but here's the thing. We've
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: all seen bucks where you said, I shoot that buck. Yeah,
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: so the difference, what do you think about that, dear?
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: And I shot that buck? You know that was a difference.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: It was like on the border and I was like, no, yeah,
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: we've seen molt ones. You're like, I was making some
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: commentary on the hilltop when the buck in question came out.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: That was kind of the one that she was going, well,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: you know, that's a decent bedded down out by us.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: Twice I was. I was setting up there and I
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: said Steve Ronella on day three, is gonna shoot that buck. No,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: we've had bucks. We've had bucks, we just haven't had
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: seen a lot of nice bucks far off, seeing little
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: Bucks up close, and we just haven't. The corn is up.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: That's one thing I don't think we mentioned. There's a
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: bunch of pivots in this time of year. A lot
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: of those deer are still in there. I think it
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: is a hole down in that corny. I mean miles
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: of cors like the Wild West and miles. Yeah, I
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: think it's holding them, maybe more than I thought it
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: was going to. But it's just there's it's so unpredictable,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: like being on the hilltop. You see, like we've seen
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: a shooter buck almost every single time we've set up
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: there because we have this macro view, and it's just
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: you know, sometimes they come out here, sometimes they come
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: out there. There's just so much surface area that corn
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: it's just hard to know where they're gonna be. Yeah,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: we saw a shooter buck last night. There was a
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: mile and a half away going the other way. Yeah,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: chasing hot after a doll and you're just like it's
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: kind of like you see it, but it kind of
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: doesn't it doesn't matter. Yeah, uh, I like seeing that stuff,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: though it can easily go the other way where people
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: are like, well it doesn't even matter. So why are
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: we sitting here if we can see him but we
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: can't get to him? Michael Valad I guess yeah, I
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: don't want. I think I've had a wonderful time hunting here.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: Every sit is like it's half it's half sitting half
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: spot stock. Yeah, every sit is exciting. We've been seeing
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: big box. Clay got a nice book. Yeah, I could
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: tell if like whatever has to night, if we had
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: another day, I'd have no doubt we'd get them. We're
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: probably gonna go get one right now. We got an
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: evening left. The bottom of the ninth kind of kind
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: of picked up. Um, Jordan tell everybody how to find
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: you again. We told him how to find you before. Yeah,
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: Running Water Hunting dot com is probably the easiest, and
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: all my contact infos on there. You can kind of
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: get the layout of what we offer. Yeah, Turkey's white
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: tails like very limited amounts of mule deer Elk sounds
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: like if you're in Nebraska resident elk and one of
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: the lucky few you do it again, you're feeling cocky
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: about it. Now that you killed that huge bole, I
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: would do it again. I would only do like one
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: one one elk hunter. Yeah, maybe depends if the landowner. Yeah,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: if we, like somebody drew a landowner tag, we probably
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: wouldn't take anybody. Oh really, so you're strict about it? Yeah,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: you played pretty conservative. I think so. Like I there's
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: there's some other outfitters that have taken like a lot
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: of elk hunters, and I heard this year that they
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: were having trouble finding the size, and I think that
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: that's from a lot of numbers. I think even deer
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: and stuff should be uh, if we're not gonna put
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: like a sigh is restriction in like a a lot
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: of guys are doing like we're not going to shoot
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: a deer under one forty type of management style. Like
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: I think if you don't do something like that, you've
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: got to be kind of conservative on how many people
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: you take it. Well, we could have killed the elk
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: if we'd have been been hunting elk this week. I mean,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: we had elk that we could have made a play
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: on on Jordan's land. And that was to say, I mean,
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: like this one little sector of calendar because those we
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: saw the other day, Yeah, they were coming right through.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not saying it would have been easy,
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: but we could have. We've just seen Elk. We could
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: have got it's cool to be looking out. See all
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: was bison and here comes hurt out. It was all right,
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: we better go yet. I gotta take my pajamas back
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: off again, my regular clothes back on. We're gonna go. Yeah,
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: get a big Jordan's thank you, Thank you, guys. This
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: has been so much. It's been great. The people don't
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: know it right now, we're all sitting in lazy boys. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: I was gonna say something about that. This farmhouse. It's
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: really neat where you keep people this this farmhouse. It
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: feels like you're in someone's home. Small. Yeah, that's it's great.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: It's been great. Appreciate it. He doesn't have a lazy
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: lazy boy. A lot of Western aren't hanging here, which
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: has got me like, I feel like I'm gonna go
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: deep on this year. I asked my wife for Christmas
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: to get me. I want to frame. I told it right,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna put it in the bedroom. I want a
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: framed print of C. M. Russell's The Free Trappers, and
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: I was gonna be like, and that'll be the end
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: of it. It will be the end of it. But
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: now I found another one. Following the River by Robert
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: Duncan song I have to go talk to her and
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: be like, listen that wall for Valentine, for Valentine's I
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: need Following the River by Robert Duncan's good paint. Alright,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: thanks so much,
