- 0:01One of my favorite little sayings is that the only kind of control
- 0:05that we're supposed to have is self-control organizing our
- 0:09attitudes requires self-control.
- 0:12It is the recognition that we are responsible and able to take charge
- 0:19of our thoughts and our feelings and straighten them out according to truth.
- 0:25Hold up truth to ourselves and align ourselves to that truth
- 0:30that exists outside of us.
- 0:32We don't have our own truth.
- 0:34We don't create our own selves, our own meaning
- 0:39And definitely not our own truth.
- 0:42Instead, we align ourselves to the objective actual truth
- 0:48that we find in God's word
- 0:50I'm Misty Winkler, author of the book Simplified Organization: Learn
- 0:54to Love What Must be Done, and you found the Christian Homemaking
- 0:57Podcast during Organize October
- 1:01so during Organize October, I put out a short, meaty episode every weekday.
- 1:08But also inside my community, Convivial Circle, which is all about helping
- 1:13women to excel at homemaking and do life cheerfully, we are getting into
- 1:19the nitty-gritty of applying these ideas and helping one another put them into
- 1:24practice, notice the small wins, and have organized attitudes that really stick
- 1:32I'm gonna give you a little taste of what it's like by sharing an excerpt
- 1:36from one of our weekly seminars.
- 1:38I was talking about being responsible instead of being a victim
- 1:44Grab a basket of laundry to fold, and let's organize those attitudes together
- 1:50you-are-responsible-for-your-attitude-convivial-circle-1790702856: but as we've identified our excuses
- 1:53this last month, .. and before we are going to be able to organize our
- 2:00attitude, we have to recognize that we're responsible for our attitude.
- 2:05Excuse-making is very similar to thinking of yourself as the victim,
- 2:13and victim thinking is so prevalent today that we often don't recognize it.
- 2:20We don't recognize that being a victim and being responsible are opposites, and
- 2:29you're choosing one path or the other.
- 2:33You can't straddle those two things.
- 2:35And almost all underdog or heroic-type tales and biographies that really
- 2:45inspire us have people who were victims of things they had no control over.
- 2:53Bad things happened to them due to no fault of their own.
- 2:56They were victims.
- 2:58But the triumph story is that even though that was true, that didn't
- 3:04define them for the rest of their life.
- 3:06They took responsibility, used their personal agency, and moved forward anyway.
- 3:15Most hero stories are stories of people who refused to be defined by
- 3:23whatever they were a victim of And that's not just special people, that
- 3:29is ev- available to all human beings.
- 3:33We are all able to be responsible and have agency and move f- forward.
- 3:39So we don't even have to ask necessarily.
- 3:42We don't have to start by deciding whether or not our excuse is
- 3:47legitimate, whether or not we are a victim of our circumstances.
- 3:53For a lot of us are in a happy family.
- 3:58M- I mean, a lot of us here have exactly what we wanted.
- 4:01It just turns out to be actual work and harder than we thought.
- 4:06So when we're making excuses and acting like the victim, it's just a total
- 4:11lie, and it's just self-pity, and it's very tempting, and it's very easy
- 4:16to fall into because of the cultural milieu, the air that we are breathing
- 4:25And so we don't realize that's what we're doing, and it's a total lie.
- 4:31But even if it wasn't, even if, you know, there's illnesses or other people
- 4:38completely sinned against you and your life is legitimately harder than you
- 4:43thought it would be due to no fault of your own, due to actual difficulty and
- 4:50maybe actual oppression in some kind of way That doesn't change the fact that
- 4:57you're responsible for yourself and your responses and that you still have agency
- 5:02So even if you don't want to confront or think about or question whether or not
- 5:09the thing that's making you feel sorry for yourself is true or not, you say,
- 5:14"Well, whether it is or isn't, what's the responsible thing for me to do next?"
- 5:21Because there is always a path of faithfulness to move forward in
- 5:27God has provided a way of escape from every temptation
- 5:31that we may be able to endure.
- 5:33Like, there is a path of good works that God has prepared before for us to walk in.
- 5:38There is a path forward out of temptation into good works that God has laid out,
- 5:45and we need to pray and ask for the clarity and the insight to see it.
- 5:54But we also need to repent of lies and ingratitude and a lack of faith that
- 6:01are our intentional blinders that we put on that-- preventing us from seeing
- 6:05what's actually right in front of us, which is the path forward of faithfulness
- 6:10So no matter what your excuses are, n- whether they're legitimate or not, we
- 6:15don't even h- I don't even have to know.
- 6:17We don't have to figure that out
- 6:19In faith, you can move forward because God has a path in front of you, and His
- 6:24Word is a light to your path So if you can't see it, are you reading the Bible?
- 6:30Have you prayed and asked God to light your path and reveal it?
- 6:34Or maybe you know what that path is and you just don't like it,
- 6:37and you want a different one.
- 6:39You're not really praying for insight into what the path forward is,
- 6:43you're praying for a different path.
- 6:45And, I mean, Jesus prayed that prayer and God answered, "No."
- 6:49If there's any other way.
- 6:51Sometimes we pray that prayer as well, and generally the answer is no.
- 6:57Like, you have to go through the thing, you have to go down this path,
- 7:00whatever it is that you're avoiding or not wanting to do, but it's the
- 7:05faithful right next thing we can rely on God and move forward down that path.
- 7:11Whether we feel like it or not, we can move forward being equipped and called
- 7:18Yes, that's true.
- 7:19Sarah says, "The world frames this message as really unsympathetic,
- 7:24but it's actually very empowering.
- 7:26I'm not a slave to my situation."
- 7:28Exactly.
- 7:30You're not a slave to your passions.
- 7:32You're not a slave to your circumstances.
- 7:35You're not a slave to your sin if you're in Christ.
- 7:38There, you can be free and you can move forward freely in faithfulness,
- 7:44which will be a path of joy.
- 7:46And that's why we say repent, rejoice, repeat
- 7:51Yes.
- 7:53Allegra says, "Many times I want to be helpless and holler for my husband to come
- 7:58rescue me when he's working from home, but really it's like the boy who cried wolf.
- 8:03Eventually my husband ignores the noise, and I keep feeling like a victim until
- 8:08I stop myself short and get a grip.
- 8:10I'm an adult.
- 8:11I set the tone for my household, and I don't get to be rescued because
- 8:15this is where God wants me to be."
- 8:17And our husbands do like to help us, and we can receive that gratefully.
- 8:22But also, we were created to be helps for them.
- 8:28We weren't created to be damsels in distress.
- 8:31And generally, men don't want to marry damsels in distress
- 8:37and have that in perpetuity.
- 8:40You wanna be a queen with capabilities, allowing your husband to do his work.
- 8:46You can do your work, which enables him to do his work.
- 8:50Mm, Naomi says, "It's so hard not to feel like a slave."
- 8:54Bingo.
- 8:55And sometimes that's the bad story that we're telling ourselves, right?
- 8:59Sometimes it's our little psalm story where we, in our imaginations, imagine
- 9:06ourselves as a slave to the housework, to the dishes, to the laundry, and
- 9:12like, "Woe is me that I'm doing this slave menial work," when it's not really
- 9:18actually the kind of work that it is.
- 9:20It is attending, gardening, cultivating, home-building work that's valuable,
- 9:29and every job has grunt work
- 9:32And so sure, there's some grunt work in this very meaningful role
- 9:37that we've been given that is high agency and high responsibility.
- 9:41And we do need to be a slave In some sense.
- 9:47Because scripture says when you are no longer a slave to
- 9:50sin, you're a slave to God.
- 9:53Who are you going to obey?
- 9:55Who is going to lead you?
- 9:57Who is directing your steps?
- 10:00Who are you following?
- 10:01Whose household do you live in?
- 10:04You can't have two masters.
- 10:06You're gonna be a slave to unrighteousness or you're gonna
- 10:08be a slave to righteousness
- 10:11Yeah, it's Tiffany.
- 10:12So it's both daunting and empowering to realize that we can control
- 10:16ourselves and our attitudes.
- 10:19We want to be the Proverbs 31 woman above the incessantly dripping wife.
- 10:25So your choices, who do we wanna be?
- 10:28The Proverbs 31 woman is out there doing things.
- 10:31She has high agency, high responsibility, not a victim to difficulty,
- 10:38laughing at the times to come.
- 10:41She's not worried.
- 10:42She's doing her thing.
- 10:44That's what we wanna be like, and we can.
- 10:46That's what God calls us to be like, and that's why we can Because we're
- 10:50moving forward in the joy of the Lord
- 10:53So when we're responsible for our own thoughts, we are exercising the
- 11:00only kind of control we're supposed to have, which is self-control
- 11:05And we are taking our thoughts captive, directing our thoughts, putting truth
- 11:10in, and letting that align us, right?
- 11:14We're gonna be working on alignment cards for the whole month of October, which
- 11:18is external, outside, objective truth that then we match our thoughts up to.
- 11:26We match ourselves up to this external objective standard
- 11:31and get straightened out.
- 11:33We straighten out our thoughts, make them line up with God's word
- 11:39Stop trying to, get ourselves crooked by trying to get around truth
- 11:43Oh, that's a good example, Naomi.
- 11:46Naomi says, "Sometimes my husband will be in a hurry and
- 11:49forget to kiss me or something.
- 11:51I can spin such a story about how mean he was and probably doesn't love me anymore.
- 11:57I literally lose a whole day like a spider spinning all these tales,
- 12:02tying myself up in a string."
- 12:05I- there's probably not a wife out there who hasn't found herself doing
- 12:10something like that at some point.
- 12:12You take one little thing which actually there is a perfectly understandable
- 12:18reason that's not a big deal, and we make these stories happen It's so tempting
- 12:26And it's so hard once you've got yourself spun up in one of those stories.
- 12:31Like, it'd be like being tangled up in your own spider web that you made
- 12:35It's so hard to then have that moment of humility and
- 12:39repentance to say, "I was wrong.
- 12:42I was making all of that up.
- 12:44There was actually nothing valid in any of that."
- 12:50Man, that's humbling.
- 12:52And it's better to do it when it's all still just in your head and
- 12:55you haven't let any of it out yet.
- 12:57Repent quickly.
- 12:59Ask God to show you when you're telling stories That are spinning
- 13:05you up and making you stuck and actually have no basis in reality.
- 13:13This is a thing that we do, and we don't have to.
- 13:16We can stop it
- 13:17And it's not like, well, once it happens, then you lose.
- 13:21F.
- 13:22You failed.
- 13:24Repentance is the next step forward in faithfulness.
- 13:28There's always a step forward in faithfulness.
- 13:30It is true, the holidays are coming, and the real thing that makes our homes
- 13:36festive and enjoyable for Thanksgiving and Christmas and any other family
- 13:42gathering is mom being cheerful, loving her people, and happily putting together
- 13:51a convivial feast for her family.
- 13:54A feast not only of food, but also of fellowship
- 13:59of any time of year This is the time of year That moms need to be convivial.
- 14:06That we need to have our attitudes under control and set the tone
- 14:11for everyone as a gift to them
- 14:14We need to build our home, not tear it down
- 14:18If you've been struggling with that, then Personal conversations and
- 14:24mentoring might be exactly what you need to get over that hump and start
- 14:29living and walking with Christian joy
