- 3:00your police force in action. It was Tuesday, June third, was warm
- 3:07in Los Angeles. We were working the day watch out a homicide. My
- 3:12partner's Ben Romero. The boss is at backstrand, Chief of Detectives. My
- 3:15name is Friday. I was off duty, reporting back in on an emergency
- 3:20call. Was three fifty seven am. When I got to the basement of
- 3:23the City Hall the car pool. Let's go Friday. Sorry to call you
- 3:35back in. Couldn't be helped, all right, Ben okays, giv what's
- 3:43up in double murder? When I don't know found out about it forty minutes
- 3:47ago? You got any ideas roughly? Samemo? Was that sixty four thirteen
- 3:53nor which giver No? Sixty four to thirty? What do you mean the
- 3:55same momo? I'm the same guy, brickbat killer. How many does this
- 4:00make counting tonight? Four? We got anything at all? Uh smug his
- 4:04fingerpinned. We can't even classify him. Sounds like a smart operator. We
- 4:09gotta get him if we have to shake down the city from one end to
- 4:12the other. Big job to kill her, big killer. At four twenty
- 4:25six am, we're pulled up in front of sixty four thirty Norwitch Drive,
- 4:28a small group of bungalow apartments facing on an oval shaped garden court. Two
- 4:32uniformed officers were stationed at the door to the apartment. Hi jeev Iathellas we
- 4:36went inside, Wellberg from Thomas side was waiting for us. This way in
- 4:43here. Well there they are, Yeah, mother daughter Joe on the floor
- 4:53beside the bend. Yeah, a red brick, mss Hafters. We know
- 5:02how you must feel about all this, but would you please try to answer
- 5:05a few more questions for it? Yes, all right, poor Margaret,
- 5:12miss Hafters. How long did you know missus Diaz and her daughter? Nine
- 5:16years? This November they moved next door. I remember it so well.
- 5:23We got along right from the start. And as far as you know,
- 5:26the only close friends mother and daughter had live right here in the apartment court.
- 5:30Yes, Margaret was a pretty girl, but she was no chaser,
- 5:33no boyfriends, very close to her mother, the two of them very close.
- 5:40Did they keep any amount of valuables in the apartment? Money, jewelry,
- 5:43things like that. No, Missus Dias and Margaret didn't have much,
- 5:46you know, very modest. Didn't come. They both worked, and you
- 5:49can think of no good reasons. No, No, poor Margaret, poor
- 5:56missus line in the shock, Wellberg, Yes, would you show him?
- 6:02His half is back to our apartment? Sure, Sar, thank him as
- 6:05half and we appreciate it. Well, Joe, let's check with Ed.
- 6:14He's back in the bedroom. You get anything from the neighbors, the usual
- 6:21Ed, No jealous boyfriends, ex husband's nothing like that boys find any evidence
- 6:26yet Skaber's still working on it. You got any theories? And we know
- 6:30the killings were all done by the same guy. Cuts the same pattern out
- 6:33of the window screen, cuts the same pattern with a glass cutter out of
- 6:36the window, reaches in and flips the locks. All right, where's that
- 6:40leaving? And before he gets inside he makes sure there are only women in
- 6:44the house. That means he probably watches the house for a few days.
- 6:46Once he gets inside, he wants only one thing to kill. He's never
- 6:50taken any valuables as far as we can tell, He's never searched for any
- 6:55What kind of a man works like that? I think the guy's killed?
- 6:58Crazy? Hey, fols, Yes, Donald, here's a break. Two
- 7:01fair prints, one thumb, one forefinger. What you get? Pete only
- 7:05got nine points? Not enough to go into court, but enough to make
- 7:09him. We'll know him when we get him. Yeah, found the prints
- 7:12on the lens of the old lady's eyeglasses. Probably knocked him off the night
- 7:15table when he went after him, and when he was done, he put
- 7:16him back on the table. Yeah, had blood on his hands. He
- 7:20Yeah, that's funny, isn't it. Why would he go to the trouble
- 7:25of picking up the woman's glasses after he killed her. We'll ask him when
- 7:28we find him. All right, man, Joe might have something for him.
- 7:39We can usually hold it just one yeah, crime lamp jones, Yeah,
- 7:45yeah, all right, I'll tell him. Right ed backstrand. If
- 7:49you're through checking the victims clothes by eight o'clock, you can knock off asleep
- 7:54until noon. What if we're not through, take it up with the chaplain.
- 7:57Here's what I wanted to show you over here. A couple of casts
- 8:01bare footprint that's right, those from the Deer's place found him outside the dining
- 8:05room window in the flower bed. Take a look, good cast size nine
- 8:13ten missing toe there, huh, left foot, first toe, that's lucky.
- 8:20One of the guy took his shoes off before he went in that house.
- 8:22That's the way it looks. You leave any other princely three with his
- 8:24shoes on? Here they are here? Yeah. How would you say the
- 8:30guy is built? Lee? Oh? From the impression, pretty heavy man.
- 8:33There's no full length of stride, or I might give you an idea
- 8:37of his height. How about them bricksley here? They are all trails.
- 8:43Use this one in the first murder, this one in the second, this
- 8:46one last night, leaves him around like calling cards, and there's no way
- 8:50to check him. You'll never get a fingerprint off a common red brick like
- 8:54this pin surface is too rough. Well, I got an idea of his
- 8:58weight that the first toes missing from his left foot. That's something one we
- 9:03had yesterday. We can check that. Mission towing the amputation filego. Yeah,
- 9:07well we better get back, Pete. Ought to have those prints ready
- 9:09to thanks a lot late. Okay, fellas say they post the bodies yet,
- 9:13Yeah, they're doing it now, same as the first two. The
- 9:16brain concussion hemorrhys. They didn't have a chance. Hold at a minute time,
- 9:20laft Jones. Sure in just a minute, either one of you,
- 9:24fellas, I'll get it. Joe okay, yeah, me yeah, good,
- 9:30will be right over. They got to make on a two fingerprinks okay,
- 9:39Joe, single print file made him on the index finger. Let me
- 9:43see, Pete take a look, Ben. Yeah, doesn't look like a
- 9:48killer, does he. Joe kind a nice looking, that's right, Pete.
- 9:50They said the same thing about John Dillinger. The name at the top
- 9:56of the makesheet read Carlos Richard Monterey, male occasion, age nineteen, height
- 10:01five feet eleven inches, weight one hundred and sixty five pounds, dark brown
- 10:05haired, dark brown eyes. Last known address sixteen sixty three Naples Street,
- 10:11Los Angeles. Previous arrests one auto theft, February eighth, nineteen thirty six.
- 10:16That was all than and I had been expecting more. The information on
- 10:22the Mama sheet for Monterey was thirteen years old. So was the picture,
- 10:26So was the description, so was the address. In thirteen years. A
- 10:30man can change in a thousand ways, soaking his habits, his appearances,
- 10:35address in thirteen years. Everything can change except two things, a man's fingerprints
- 10:41and a physical to formity. I'm listening too. On the left foot,
- 10:50Carlos Richard Monterey. Here there is Joe, sixteen sixty three Naples. Yeah,
- 11:03come on, somebody's coming. Yes, what is it for police officers?
- 11:20We'd like to ask you a few questions. Oh yes, would you
- 11:24like to come in? Thank you, ma'am. Yes. Would you mind
- 11:30telling us your name? Mon today? Monday? What is it you want?
- 11:35You're married? Yes, my husband is Francisco Monterday. Would you explain
- 11:41how you are here? We thought you might be able to help us.
- 11:43We're looking for a man named Carlos Monterey. I I don't understand you.
- 11:48We're looking for him man. We'd like to talk to him. Do you
- 11:50know where he is? Yes, Carlos is dead seven years ago. He's
- 11:56dead, my husband told me. And does your husband o'carlos? Or did
- 12:00he know him? He was his brother? What about your husband's parents,
- 12:03Miss Money? Where they they both did sometime? Now? Have you ever
- 12:07met Carlos? No? Never, I have only heard of him. What
- 12:11have you heard of him? Ms? Monrae, do not ask me?
- 12:15This is important, very important. Francisco wouldn't like it if I told you
- 12:18it's important, Miss Money, believe it, Cardiness. He's sick his mind
- 12:26well eight years. Francisco has not seen him, not heard from him.
- 12:28He thinks he's dead, but he only think so, Miss Monaey. No
- 12:31one has told him his brother's dad. He just thinks. So. What
- 12:33else he did to think? What is your husband now at his work?
- 12:37Mister Dorr asked reading him mean grocery, Monte Carlrot grocery. Here's your change?
- 12:50Thank you, missus myers. Now look, officers, you know how
- 12:56it is. You don't like to let these things get out. That's why
- 12:58I trust you can trust as mister Monterey. We just want to check on
- 13:01a few things. Oh fine, always glad to help out if I can.
- 13:05Can you tell us if your brother was ever in a mental institution in
- 13:09his life? Oh? I know there was nothing wrong. Nineteen twenty three,
- 13:15got a little bad someone. Dad had to put him away for a
- 13:16while, just till he calmed down. I remember the day. Sometimes,
- 13:22dumb stupid kid, what he know, standing there by himself in the train,
- 13:26crying in the public nurse stupid way he cried, what do you do?
- 13:33I cried too. I was only ten, such I saw him go.
- 13:37He was alone. Later on, mister money, your brother was released
- 13:39from the state institution. Yeah, he was sixteen, and he started running
- 13:43around, playing tough, carried it gun, live by himself. He never
- 13:48came around. He dropped from sight about nineteen thirty eight, and you haven't
- 13:52heard from him since. Nothing. Never seen him. Do you know of
- 13:56anybody who might have seen him. There was a girly had Anita something on
- 14:03Soteo Street, Anita Martin. Yeah, that's it, Soteo Street. Maybe
- 14:07she's seen it. Ask her, Maybe she's seen it. Carlos, Carlos
- 14:16moderee and not in a year less March. She was in when I was
- 14:22working at the Peacock Donald, South Maine. He came in. We talked
- 14:26for a while. That was all. And you haven't seen Carlos for the
- 14:28past two months or so, I tell you no. Has he reatten two
- 14:31years? He phoned once. Three weeks ago he phoned here. He left
- 14:37a message with my girlfriend, but he didn't call back again. Now that's
- 14:43it. That's all I know. Thank you, miss Martin. Here's our
- 14:45card. If he does call on, you'll let us know. Yeah,
- 14:48I'll let you know. You like Carlos? Is that anything like him?
- 14:54No? I didn't like him. It was funny, but he was nice,
- 15:00you know. I pitied him. Why did you pity him, Miss
- 15:01Martin? Well, he was a good fellow who was strange. He could
- 15:07smile, you know, he had a nice smile, but you could tell
- 15:09he was never laughing. There was something in his mind, something I don't
- 15:16know. Least a year close to the two. I haven't seen Carlos.
- 15:24No letters, not a card, nothing. It was in the ease.
- 15:28The last time I heard when was that year ago January. I was in
- 15:31here sent me a calendar. Sometimes he could get along fine, very well,
- 15:35other times terrible. He couldn't keep him down. How they managed to
- 15:39stay out of jail, won't we Vicinny? I don't know. Sometimes he
- 15:41should have been in jail five times over. When you say you don't know
- 15:45of anybody who might have a recent picture of Carlos a snapshot, no,
- 15:48no, no one I can think of. Okay, Vincentny, here's our
- 15:52card. If you do think of somebody, let us know when you'll hell
- 15:54sure glad to if I hear of anybody? What kind of a day is
- 15:58it outside? Hot? Hot? By five o'clock that afternoon, Ben and
- 16:11I were certain of one thing. Carlos Monterey was in the city of Los
- 16:14Angeles somewhere. We drove back to the office and told ed Backstrand about our
- 16:18interviews with Monterey's relatives and his friends. Inquiries and requests for further identification and
- 16:23information on him were immediately relayed to the state mental institutions. The thirteen year
- 16:27old picture of Monterey taken from the files was copied and distributed with a note
- 16:32of caution as to the age of the photograph, and APB was sent out
- 16:36stakeouts were placed at the home of Monterey's brother, at the brother's store,
- 16:40and at the apartment of Anita Martin. A special detail of three hundred men
- 16:44was ordered to join the dragon Net already in operation. The details at the
- 16:48airport and the bus terminals were alerted, as well as the details at the
- 16:51union depot and the main post office. By six o'clock that night, almost
- 16:56one thousand men were actively working at the job of tracking down Carlos Monte.
- 17:00At six thirty PM, Ben and I drew a four hour relief period.
- 17:03We drove out to Ben's place and his wife fixed us some dinner. At
- 17:07ten thirty that night, we reported into the office, picked up at Backstrand,
- 17:11and we drove out to join the man hunt. Unit thirty two are
- 17:17on the corner of Southflower lowis for three ninety W AMA three six seven,
- 17:22Unit twelve A Code one sixty six A at eighty six four of Wall Street.
- 17:30It's the man about A five oh seven AMA three six seven Unit forty
- 17:36two five four three oh East Grand Apartment leven KMA three six seven. We
- 17:41cruised with a Dragonet operation until five o'clock that morning. Ben and I took
- 17:45turns driving. Actually, the tremendous job of scouring five hundred square amounts of
- 17:51city for one man was only beginning. Unless there was an unexpected break,
- 17:55The search for Carlinos Mount of Ray could wear on for weeks. It did,
- 17:59night after night. The man went on him day after day. There
- 18:02was no break. Sixteen days later, on a Sunday night, I went
- 18:06to bed early. I read a while, and then I turned off the
- 18:07lamp and went to sleep. Hello Friday talking. Sorry, Joe, get
- 18:19in here as fast as you can. What's the matter that girl Monta Raye,
- 18:23the one you talked to. Yeah, she left her apartment, went
- 18:26to her girlfriends. Yeah, she's dead there it is what liarly Red Brick
- 18:37founded by the body. How long she's been dead? Scare her? And
- 18:40she was seen alive about an hour and a half ago. Got three bare
- 18:42footprints, good length of stride. Found them down in the lot beside the
- 18:47house. What do they look like? Same guy? First toe missing from
- 18:49the left foot, the same weight impression should be about five foot eleven.
- 18:55That checks out without you, God, doesn't it all right? So it's
- 18:57the same guy. What about those shoes we found? Yeah, they correspond
- 19:02they were impregnated with foreign matter. What'd you find? Articles of lettuce leave,
- 19:07dry onion skin, traces of red cabbage, maybe vegetable counter maybe?
- 19:14What about the City Wholesale Market down on Front Street? What about any market
- 19:17in Los Angeles? No, Lee, That wholesale market is big enough to
- 19:19hide anybody. Hundreds of traintions working there, some of them even sleep there.
- 19:23For a guy like Monterey to be perfect, it's a fair guess.
- 19:26Check it when it opens. They open at two am, two thirty.
- 19:29Now I'd get back to the office and pick up as many extra menags.
- 19:32You need to get down there right away, okay, Ed, And you
- 19:33know he's a rougherence to watch it. On Monday, June twenty third,
- 19:40at two minutes past three am, we pulled up at the City Wholesale Produce
- 19:42Market. With the exception of fifty four police officers in plain clothes who mingled
- 19:48with the buyers and sellers. Business went along as usual. The market itself
- 19:52covered almost three square blocks in the lower part of the downtown area, was
- 19:56divided off into hundreds of individual stalls by flimsy wooden partitions. To make the
- 20:00search even tougher. The place was crowded. For the first forty five minutes,
- 20:03we had the men circulated at random through the crowd on the chance that
- 20:07one of them might spot Carlos Monterey from the thirteen year old picture. It
- 20:11didn't happen. After that, we started the systematic canvas. We talked to
- 20:15the customers, We talked to the managers of the different booths. We gave
- 20:18them Monterey's description, We showed them his picture. Nobody recognized them. We
- 20:22checked the employment records one by one. Not a sign. Sorry, Sergeant
- 20:27Mike to hell, I've never seen the guy. Okay, mister Snyders,
- 20:30thank you. We sure picked the sweet jobs, don't we. Oh yeah,
- 20:33we could spend a year at this, oh, Sergeant Sergeant Friday,
- 20:37Yeah, comanski to find something. I had the booth over there against the
- 20:40far wall thinks he might have hired Monterey a couple of days ago. Come
- 20:42on, Ben, where over there, sergeant you showing Monterey's picture? Yeah,
- 20:47he thinks it might be him. Mister PRESIDENTI this is Sergeant Romero.
- 20:52Sergeant Friday, Yes, I told your boys, sergeant this fellow Carlos I
- 20:56hire him to help lest Thur's the day big a rush for me now,
- 21:00so I hired him. You're sure he's a man in the picture things so
- 21:03a little older maybe, but I know faces he's the man you're looking for
- 21:08him. You say you hired this man last Thursday. That's all right,
- 21:11it's a big rush for me now in the morning. I hire him a
- 21:14Thursday. He worked the tours the day Friday Saturday. But he don't show
- 21:18up this morning, so I got an oid. Use too many minutes to
- 21:21pick it from you don't show up. I let him go. What kind
- 21:23of work did he do for you? Same as he did before? Schiller
- 21:26done the heavy work moving the stores they're cleaning up. What kind of produce
- 21:30to Shiller handle? Miss Frans nanny fancy, very fancy, vegetable choice,
- 21:34no potatoes, expensive red onions. Shiller sells to the bigger hotels. Sillar
- 21:40handle brown onions, mister fans name only the best big god dealer that the
- 21:45Shiller sells it to the big hotels. How long has this Carlos been working
- 21:48around the market. I don't know. Is it just the like of the
- 21:51race? First he working for me, then Lord go Marcini, then a
- 21:55Schiller. Hey, why are you looking so harder for him. He stole
- 21:57you somebody, he murdered somebody. Yeah, my mommy murder. Do you
- 22:03have any idea where Carlos live for me? No? No, And if
- 22:07it comes it back here, I tell her to get out of it.
- 22:08I got nothing to do with this straw. You'll tell him nothing, mister
- 22:11Presidenttie, here's our card. If you see Monterey again, call us say
- 22:15nothing to him. Sure, sure, Joe, call the chief at the
- 22:18office where your messages came in Banks now, Ben, Yeah, there's a
- 22:21phone booth. See no, I don't wear raight ahead a little laugh.
- 22:23Oh yeah, you got a nickel see. Oh yeah, there you are.
- 22:29Thanks. I'll see what Ed wants City Hall two five one one one.
- 22:51See detectives always had him. Hi, Mike, Ed there and take
- 22:55it on extension too. With you banks man talking, we'll fasten this one.
- 23:00Joe, what's up? Me? And post office Corlis Monterey picked up
- 23:03a letter there less than five minutes ago. Come on, Ben, there's
- 23:15that over there with Welberg. Yeah, traffic short jammed up around here.
- 23:19Hi, Ed Friday, you all said Wilberg. I'll set Chief Spring Street
- 23:23to San Pedro sunset. The first gotta cover good. What's the story?
- 23:27Both office detail tipped us off. Five minutes after eight, a man answering
- 23:30Carlaus Monterey's description picked up a letter at the general delivery window there was sixteen
- 23:34minutes ago. Who spotted him. Sam Lane got to look at him just
- 23:37as he was leaving the window, called to him to stop, but Monterey
- 23:41ran. Lane called me and we threw an it over the area for six
- 23:42blocks around, and Monterey is still somewhere inside this area. I don't know
- 23:45how I could have gotten out. What's next? And I'll give him an
- 23:48hour to break for it. After that we start a house to house search
- 23:51for the whole area. Stop all pedestrian and vehicular traffic for identification. If
- 23:53you're gonna jam up the depot traffic, that's cheaper than murder. Romero get
- 23:57going. The first hour we counted off in five minutes segments like Backstrand we
- 24:03felt close enough to moderate to touch him, but he still wasn't there.
- 24:07The north and south ends of the blockade started to move in, slowly,
- 24:11searching every store, every house, every conceivable place where a man might hide
- 24:15out. In the meantime, Ben and I worked the Spring Street side of
- 24:18the blockade and watching the faces of the pedestrians as they came through, one
- 24:22by one, examining all vehicles and their drivers. The morning war on,
- 24:27the sun came out and it started to get warm. By eleven o'clock that
- 24:32morning, Monterey still had not been found. The temperature was ninety three.
- 24:36In Los Angeles, it was still climbing. The search went on. At
- 24:40ten minutes past two pm. Backstrand made their rounds. How's it looks gimmer?
- 24:45Not good? Going slow? How much longer you figure? I don't
- 24:48know, and it'll go to after doc that's showing district now here is like
- 24:52events in this Yeah, nothing nothing are someplace inside this blockade. He's gonna
- 24:57be many chance getting relieved for the men in our squad. Some of them
- 25:00been working straight through since yesterday. Mmmm, we'll see check with me a
- 25:04run five this afternoon. Thank you, Skaving, keep a shop, look
- 25:07up one slip, that's all it takes. The search went on at three
- 25:12o'clock that afternoon. The temperature was ninety five. We swelltered and we waited.
- 25:18At three forty five, Backstrand sent a squad of men into the Union
- 25:21Depot to search it from top to bottom. There was one false alarm when
- 25:25one of the men thought he saw him on a race slipping out a side
- 25:26door into a taxi. It turned out to be a train conductor. At
- 25:32twenty five minutes past four, Backstrand passed along the order to our detail to
- 25:34start moving in. House by house was a tedious job, and it went
- 25:38slowly. The men were tired. At five point thirty the relief squad showed
- 25:44up. Ben and I stayed on. After another two hours of house to
- 25:48house searching, the trap was narrowed down to a three square block area a
- 25:51single block wide and three blocks long. It started to get dark. Backstrand
- 25:56ordered out batteries of floodlights. By eight pm, the courton closed in around
- 26:00the last two square blocks. Lines, drawersets, giver ready to move good,
- 26:04what do you think? Well know, pretty soon one way or the
- 26:07other. Prank, keep that traffic moving, all right, you two get
- 26:11going? Say a light us given, Joe. Let's take a look in
- 26:15here. Okay, here is an old building. Yeah what Kamanski go?
- 26:22Oh, no, you're a man to go away. There's his flashlight on
- 26:26the end of the corridor. There he's sigma. Yeah, come on,
- 26:30Comanski yees down below searching the basement. Come on, Monterey, he's been
- 26:34there. I think here this way where over here? I watch the step
- 26:41that life's bad there he is, says he's a janitor. He's been slut
- 26:47All right, come on, how it happened? Can you tell us?
- 26:48Yeah, man, a big man hit me. I came down to him.
- 26:52Get the baskets. He hit me in the rain. And over to
- 26:53the new building. The new buildings at the one next door. Yeah,
- 26:56just a few minutes ago. Nobody's come out of this building for the past
- 26:59half hour. Every door in the place's guarden. Oh no, I'm at
- 27:00the doors. He went through the tunnel. I saw him over there's the
- 27:03tunnel. I'll take the look, Joe. Yeah, the tunnel next the
- 27:07two basements, same company, whole building, new building, a tunnel ton
- 27:10next to the basement. Come on, yeah, comanski, get out the
- 27:12backstrands. Tell them what's happened, right, sergeant, call an ambulance.
- 27:18All right, Ben, through the tunnel. That's where you're going. The
- 27:21right's bad here it is. M had a door up ahead the yeah,
- 27:27I think so, yeah, yeah, let's go good. There's a stairway.
- 27:33Come on, watch the doors. Joe the elevator. They're both on
- 27:45the third floor. It's head for the stairs, man, come on one
- 27:56more floor, Yeah right, come on, hurry look top of the stairs.
- 28:00There he goes. All right, hold it, you ducks from the
- 28:04elevator. Joey's going down. Well, we'll never make it on the stairs.
- 28:07Yo. Look the gun of elevators, the control levers fence. Let's
- 28:10try it anyway, Try to kick the control lever. Kick it, bam
- 28:17the good all right, Ben noted the lever back. Come on quick,
- 28:22yep, what's the matter, Joy's jim, we're going back all right,
- 28:26let's kick it here here here that doesn't can you reach the door control?
- 28:30What just now? See? Yeah, I'm pay well he's still in the
- 28:34building. Both elevators are here now yeah, down the hall, Ben,
- 28:38the office of the left, I think, yeah, okay, here we
- 28:41are. I keep there the door all right, min all right, put
- 28:47on that gun and come on out. Okay, Joe, let's take you
- 28:53watch it, maw. He's going everything he can get his hands on.
- 29:02All right, Monterey, come on you okay, then take him. Guilt
- 29:08him. Hum nice looking guy, clean cut, Yeah, doesn't figure dead?
- 29:26What's that my wife would say, he doesn't look like a killer.
- 29:30Doesn't what's the killer supposed to look like? He knows. The story you
- 29:42have just heard is true, only the names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 29:48Carlos Monterey was examined by five different psychiatrists appointed by the Superior Court and
- 29:55was found to be seen. He was tried and convicted of murder in the
- 29:57first degree. He was executed in the lethal gas chamber at the State Penitentiary.
- 30:07You have just heard the seventeenth in a new series of authentic cases from
- 30:11official files. Technical advice for Dragnet comes from the office of Wa Wharton,
- 30:15Acting Chief of Police, Los Angeles Police Department. Tonight's program is dedicated to
- 30:21motorcycle Patrolman John Kramer of the El Paso, Texas Sheriff's Department, who,
- 30:26on the afternoon of April twenty sixth, nineteen forty, gave his life so
- 30:30that yours might be more secure. Dragnet came to you from Los Angeles,
- 30:41your Tune for the Stars on NBC. Welcome back. Well a very solid
- 30:59apple and good job. I think I'm doing a whole lot of characters with
- 31:06various ethnic backgrounds and making them sound realistic rather than caricature, which a lot
- 31:11of the other full time radio shows would often be unable to do. This
- 31:18one definitely quickly became a man hunt case, and it's just it's a fascinating
- 31:22process the way that it's told here. I also had another thought on Ed
- 31:30Baxtrand in this episode. Raymond Burr's performance here reminds me of his later performance
- 31:37seven years later as another captain, Captain Lee Quince in Fort Laramie, a
- 31:45Western where he played a cavalry captain and Andrew Ryns did that over at OTR
- 31:52Westerns dot Com. Not encourage you to check that out. I'm not huge
- 31:56into westerns, but Fort Laramie and have one and have done We'll Travel are
- 32:01definitely exceptions to the rule. So great acting by Raymond Burne that and similar,
- 32:09I think to just the way he plays it here. There's a certain
- 32:14toughness and no nonsense about Backstrand that is interesting, even if it's kind of
- 32:21distracting from where Dragnet's going to go. Well, now on to some listener
- 32:27comments and feedback. Gary says, love the programs, Thanks for all the
- 32:31hard work. Well, thanks so much, Gary, I appreciate everyone listening
- 32:35out there. We'll be back on Monday with the Saint and join us next
- 32:39Saturday for another episode of Dragnet. In the meantime, send your comments to
