- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And they also have some pretty awesome custom team merge.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I like to think of it as a PFF meeting our lads, but with a little bit more depth.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Check them out at def dash charts.com or deaf underscore charts on Twitter and Instagram.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I am your host, Cameron Clark, and I am back for another loaded edition of our weekly college football show every single Wednesday of the season.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Let's get to it.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: We have a jam-packed show today.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: We are going to go through some MLB updates from the playoffs, some WNBA playoff race updates.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: The NHL is well into the season, now entering the third week of the season.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: So we will catch you up on some of the biggest news and stories around the National Hockey League before we get into our college football week six recap and our week seven preview.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So let's get tailgating.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Starting in the Major League Baseball playoff race, we we saw game one of the ALCS, the American League Championship Series, take place on Monday of this week between the Rays and the Cleveland Guardians.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: The Rays went with their dominant right-hander, Drew Rasmussen, who was great against the Yankees in the ALDS, was great all season, was a contender for the Cy Young.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: He was fantastic once again.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: He had six innings pitched, seven strikeouts, no walks, and only two earned runs.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: The Rays got out to a pretty good start in this game.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: They struck first in the first inning with RBI singles from Junior Camonero and DeLuca, but that was all for the scoring until the sixth inning when outstanding rookie outfielder Chase DeLoder hit a solo home run.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And then very next inning, the Guardians scored three more runs to make it four to two.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: The Guardians would tack on three more additional runs in the uh top of the ninth inning to take game one, seven to three in Tampa.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Game two will be Tuesday, October the 13th.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Game one in the NLCS between the Brewers and the Dodgers, with the Brewers hosting this series in Milwaukee.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: These two teams kicked off game one on Sunday with two of the best pitchers in all of baseball, Jacob Mizarrowski and Tariq Skubel.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Jacob Mizarowski managed just four and a third innings in this one on 94 pitches.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: He allowed just one run to go with five strikeouts.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And on the other side, Scuble went five innings with seven strikeouts and gave up two runs.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: The Dodgers drew first blood in the NLCS thanks to Andy Paes RBI single driving in Otani in the bottom of the second.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: But the Brewers shut the door there and in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Bryce Tarang hit a boom solo home run to tie the game before the very next inning where Luis Lara drove in what would eventually stand as a very low-scoring game one, game-winning run.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: The Brewers take game one two to one.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Game two, though, both teams found a little bit more offense.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: This was a bit more of a back and forth contest.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: The scoring was kind of spread throughout this game.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: The Dodgers took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth, where William Contreras hit a game-tying solo home run blast.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: And then in the very next inning, Contreras drove in another run in the sixth before the Brewers eventually scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take game two, seven to four.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: So the Brewers currently lead the NLCS two games to zero as we see this series shift over to LA for game three and four.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Game two, as I mentioned, will take place after the recording of this podcast Tuesday night on October the 13th.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: We will be sure to keep everybody updated as we inch closer and closer to the World Series showdown between either the Brewers, the Rays, the Guardians, or the Dodgers.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Let's move over to the WNBA as now we know who will be matching up in the finals for the WNBA.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: We saw the Golden State Valkyrie and the Las Vegas Aces in one series and the Atlanta Dream and the New York Liberty in the other.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: The Aces who have the best player in the WNBA, Asia Wilson, and the uh fifth-time MWNBA MVP were swept by the Golden State Valkyries and their league best defense.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Both of these semifinal series took a minimum of the minimum three games, and two of the most star-studded teams in the WNBA are gone.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: The New York Liberty and the Las Vegas Aces.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: The Valkyries won three games to nothing over the Aces, and game three was a close game.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: The Aces clearly did not want to go away.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: They actually forced overtime late in the fourth quarter before the Valkyries again put the clamps on defense and got this series closed off 87 to 77 in overtime.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And the dream they closed out Brianna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu with a very, very close game three.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: The dream did take it 85 to 83 to again sweep the New York Liberty and create our finals matchup between the dream and the Valkyrie.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: I really am interested in this series.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I know it doesn't have the star power that we would have gotten with a Liberty Aces matchup or a Liberty Fever matchup per se, but this pits two of the best defensive teams.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: The Valkyries were the best defensive team by a wide margin in the WNBA.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: The Dream were actually fourth in points allowed in all of the WNBA, and they were still the third best scoring team in the WNBA.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: The Valkyries have a legit home court advantage in Chase Center, and I think that defense has been the best all season.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Gabby Williams has also really started to turn it on in the playoffs.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: I'm rolling with the Valkyries.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I think that they will pull down a WNBA title.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: I am taking the Valkyries over the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA finals.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Game one of the finals set to tip Saturday, October 17th at 3:30 Eastern Time on Peacock.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: So we will be tuned into that on the Tailgate Cam podcast.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Let's get to the National Hockey League.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: The Carolina Hurricanes, man, they have been good.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: They currently have the most points in the NHL with 11 points already.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: They are on a five-game winning streak, and they just absolutely dominated on a back-to-back road trip Saturday and Sunday, beating Chicago and Philadelphia with a combined score of 9-3.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: All-star Sebastian Aho currently leads the Hurricanes with both goals and points.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: But not all is good news for those Carolina Hurricanes as they found out on Tuesday that playoff MVP Jordan Stahl tore a calf muscle and will be out up to two months with that injury.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: The Ottawa Senators, they started their season five and one and are currently on a three-game winning streak.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Their goalie, Linus Ulmar, currently leads all goalies with five wins and also sports a wonderful 1.27 goals against average.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Over the last week, the Minnesota Wild have had the best power play percentage of an even 50%, and they lead all hockey teams throughout the entire season with a power play percentage of 41%.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: So that if you get a man down against the Minnesota Wild, you better count your blessings, say a Hail Mary, and pray for help because 41% of the time the Wild are finding the back of the net with a man advantage.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: The New York Rangers, they've also started the season off with a great start, five wins in their first seven games, but they received some terrible news last week as Russian goaltender Igor Shisterkin, one of the best goalies in all of the NHL, is now out for the season.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: He had to leave the game last week in the second period.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: So devastating news there for the New York Rangers.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Will be very interesting to see if that team that plays in MSG is able to keep it rolling without their star goalie.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: We are now two weeks into the season, and the Calgary Flames have still yet to record a single point in five games.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: The Flyers, who are right above them, they are the second lowest scoring team in points in the NHL.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Their goal differential is at negative 20.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: And they have also yet to win a game in regulation.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: They have lost two games in overtime, so that's where they got their two points from.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: But they have not yet won a game.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And man, things don't look like they're getting any better in Philadelphia right now.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: We will continue to keep the tailgate covered on all NHL news and scores all season long, all the way through the Stanley Cup playoffs.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And tomorrow on our weekly NFL show, we will go through our soccer recap.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Coming up next on our Tailgate episode today is our college football week six recap, week seven preview, and with that comes our Tail the Tailgate segment.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Stick around.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: So we gotta start with what was the biggest game of the week, which was number two Georgia traveling to Tuscaloosa to take on the at the time undefeated and 5-0 Alabama Crimson tide, who were ranked number six in the nation.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Uh Georgia got this victory 20 to 17 on the road in Tuscaloosa.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Gunnar Stockton, he was incredibly efficient in this game.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: 18 of 22 for 249 yards and a touchdown.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: This was Georgia's first real test of the season.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: They had played virtually nobody.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Arkansas, Vanderbilt, uh I mean, really not being tested.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Western Kentucky, and this was their first real test, and they passed it with flying colors.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Their defense looked phenomenal, especially later on in the game.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: They really started to lock Alabama up and slow that offense down.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm not really concerned about the result for Alabama either.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: This was Keelan Russell's first real test.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: I know they went on the road and played at Mississippi State, but Georgia's defense is an entire world above what defense that Mississippi State can roll out there.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And Alabama will have more opportunities, including this week against Tennessee, to be able to pass the sniff test yet again.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, Ryan Coleman Williams, just as a note, was injured in this game.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, he will be able to make a return later on this season.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Uh, but after the game, I did see that head coach Calen De Boer said that it was questionable if he would be able to play in week seven.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: The Red River Rivalry, a game that me, much like the entire world, picked the under quickly went over because of some defensive and special teams touchdowns.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: This game was an exciting game, a struggle through large stretches for both quarterbacks.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Oklahoma finally won a turnover battle.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: They got forced two arch manning interceptions, and Oklahoma did not turn the ball over once themselves, and it proved the difference in the game.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Texas outgained Oklahoma by about 150 total yards, but they were held to just three of 14 on fourth down.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: The block field goal that Oklahoma got, that's what's going to get all of the headlines and the attention.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: But Arch just continues to really struggle for Texas.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: He had a bad fourth quarter pick six, which put Oklahoma up seven with about 10 minutes to go in the game.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: And it's really becoming a question of whether Arch will be able to elevate himself out of this current level of play that he's in.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: It's just not good enough right now.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: And people are putting the blame on him.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: People are putting the blame on Sark.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: I will put the blame on both of them.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: I think Sark has had good enough offenses that he can manufacture an offense, no matter who his quarterback is.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: It's not like all of the years that he was the OC at Alabama or USC when he was the head coach.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: They had tremendous quarterbacks every one of those years.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: And unless Arch is a complete fraud, which I don't believe that he is, they should be able to be a little bit more confident, competent, excuse me, than three of 14 on third down.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Uh my big takeaway from this Red River rivalry, though, John Mateer and Brent Venables are vampires of the season.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: They just earn themselves a brand new lease on life with this win over a rivalry.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Obviously, in college football, this is such a short-term memory type of sport with their fan bases.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Things get remembered and forgotten in such quick fashion.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: But when you win big rivalry games, especially if you're the head coach at Oklahoma and you beat Texas, that will assuredly put you in some good graces with your fans, your alumni, and your athletic administration.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: So big win there for Oklahoma, being able to get that game-winning field goal and secure that win to bring them up to three and two on the season.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Texas falls from number one down to the seventh spot in the week seven rankings following that 27 to 24 loss to Oklahoma.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Now over to the Big Ten.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Two five and oh teams, number seven, Indiana went on the road to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the five and oh Nebraska Cornhuskers and Matt Rule.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Indiana's defense was incredible in the second half.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: They held Nebraska to just seven points and allowed Josh Hoover and Indiana's offense a lot of time to muster a 17-7 second half comeback.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: I'll give myself a little bit of credit here.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: I perfectly predicted the way that this game would go.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: This is the Matt Rules special, and honestly, we can start calling this Nebraska Inc.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: to steal something from the LA Chargers.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: And that is they were going to be in this game.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: They were never going to get blown out of this game, and they were never going to win.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Nebraska does not have the bodies or the mental makeup to win games against a fiercely sharp mental team like Indiana.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: And Indiana rolls on.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I also think that the Tailgate Cam podcast needs to give quite a bit more flowers to the wide receiver duo from the Indiana Hoosiers.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: And that is wide receiver Nick Marsh and wide receiver Charlie Becker.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: They are two of the most dynamic wide receivers in all of college football.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Nick Marsh was absolutely phenomenal in this game.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: In this game alone, he had six catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of like a back and forth show, honestly, with him and Becker.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Some weeks it's Becker, some weeks it's Marsh.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: This week Becker only had three catches for 52 yards only, one of those being a 43-yard bomb that Becker came down with because he is great with those high contested catches.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: He's 6'4, 208.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: And then on the other side, you have a guy like Nick Marsh, who himself is 6'3, 210.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, just absolute specimens.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Nick Marsh is up to 530 yards, six touchdowns on the season.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: And Charlie Becker himself is now currently sitting at 530 yards in eight touchdowns.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: So there's no preferred option.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: They simply have two number ones that they feel like they can go to at any point.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: And it is a hard duo to stop for opposing defenses.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: The last thing that I want to touch on here with this game was this a moral victory for Nebraska?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: You could argue that given where the program has been at the last decade plus.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: But the thing is, Nebraska continuously finds themselves in this position because the bottom of the Big Ten is not that competitive.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: They are able to make their record look better, and they don't really play anybody in non-conference almost ever.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: I think winning the game would have been the impressive thing here for Nebraska to do, considering they were up by seven heading into halftime.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: That falls on Matt Rule.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: It falls on Whoopsie Daisy King, Anthony Calandria.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And honestly, the the mental toughness, the mental fortitude of Indiana to prevail in games like this, time and time again.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: There's a reason that they won the national championship last year, and it's not just because of Fernando Mendoza.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: They have a winner's mental toughness.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: They have a tremendously long winning streak.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: They won 16 games last year.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: They won six games to start this year.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: So this this team just doesn't experience losing, even in a game like this, where their offense didn't play great in the first half, three total points.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: They rided the ship, overcame, and found a way to win.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: That matters in my book.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Speaking of finding a way to win, number 10 LSU, who was four and one, went into Lexington, Kentucky to take on the four and one Kentucky Wildcats.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: CJ Baxter, the Kentucky running back, he was outstanding.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: The first play of the game, he had a 77-yard run, which set up his own touchdown run on the very next play.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: And that was the theme of the day.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: He had 123 yards and two touchdowns.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Sam Levitt on the other side of the ball, LSU's quarterback, just continues to be a turnover machine.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: He has 10 touchdowns on the season and eight interceptions, which is second to last in all-starting quarterbacks in all of college football.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Inexcusable there for Sam Levitt to continue to turn the ball over like that.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: I have seen some people speculate because he was hurt last year with the Sun Devils in Tempe, Arizona, that he may still be hurt.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: And if he is, if he's not, I don't care.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: LSU spent$50 million on this roster, and they have other options.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Houston Longstreet is a former five-star prospect.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: They have Hudson Clark as a backup quarterback as well, or Landon Clark, excuse me.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: To me, this is on Lane Kiffin.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: You made your bed, you paid this much money for a quarterback.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: The other guy you wanted, Demon Williams, who you were willing to shell out a bunch of money for to try to pry away from Washington, he's also been terrible.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: So what would you have been better off with?
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Sam Levitt out of the Big 12 or Demon Williams out of the Big Ten when both of those quarterbacks have looked very, very mediocre so far this season.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: What does this mean, though, for LSU's first season under Lane Kiven?
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Is this a disappointment?
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Is this a failure?
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Well, it's too early to tell.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: They're still going to be ranked heading into week seven and their matchup.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Um, they still have an opportunity to make the college football playoff, but their margin for for error is completely gone.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: They have no more margin for error.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Um, and this is kind of the way that most college football fans probably wanted to see LSU season go.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Um, they wanted to see Lane Kiffin struggle and fight through this.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I necessarily am rooting for them to struggle, but I definitely don't believe in this team.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: I don't think that Sam Levitt is is fully bought into this offense that Lane Kiffin is calling.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: I I think they lack physicality in the running game, and I think they lack physicality.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: On defense, on the defensive line.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: They have a lot of top recruits on defense, but it doesn't look like it.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: That that empty running lane, you could have drove my car through that for the two-point conversion that Kenny Minchie ran in for Kentucky to win that game.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: And the other takeaway here is what is the ceiling for head coach Will Stein with those Kentucky Wildcats?
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Honestly, I think the ceiling is the ceiling.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: I think he can reach very high levels of expectation that Mark Stoops was unable to really get to with the Kentucky Wildcats.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: I think the thing that differentiates him from Mark Stoops is the fact that he is an offensive play caller and an offensive guru.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Look at what Oregon is doing without Will Stein calling that offense now.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: They have completely floundered on offense all season, even in the games they've won against Boise State and USC.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: They looked pretty bad for large stretches of both of those games.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: And they've lost two other games to Oklahoma State and to UCLA last week.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: So look at what they've done without their play caller and Will Stein.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: I'm a fan of Will Stein.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: I I liked the hire when they brought him in.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: I just thought it made so much sense for who Kentucky is as a program to go for that young swing for the Finches coach that came in at SEC Media Days talking like he was ready to bring Kentucky back to a real state of relevancy.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: And so far he has delivered.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: He two weeks in a row has gone for it for two to win the game in overtime on the road in South Carolina and then at home at night against LSU.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Most first year coaches, especially ones at Kentucky, would have taken the moral victories there, not Will Stein.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: That dude is trying to win.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: He put his game on the line against South Carolina, put it back on the line against LSU.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: In two weeks in a row, they delivered on those two-point conversions in overtimes, and they were able to get the victories.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Kentucky moves to five and one, and they enter the AP poll heading into week seven at number 15.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Incredible rise for the Kentucky Wildcats.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: The other team that I just mentioned, talking about Will Stein, is the Oregon Ducks.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: The number 12 ranked Oregon Ducks hosted the number 21 and undefeated 4-0 UCLA.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And Oregon absolutely got whooped physically in this game.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: My first call out in this game has to go to head coach Bob Chesney.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: He looks like one of the best hires of the cycle.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: They have a very manageable schedule right now.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: UCLA has a legitimate opportunity here to turn this start of the season into an incredible finish if they're able to sustain some of the success.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Dylan Rayola was terrible in this game.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: He threw two interceptions.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: He was eventually removed from the game.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: To me, this is not a surprise.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: This is who Dylan Rayola has always been in three plus years at Nebraska.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: He has never been a consistently good winning quarterback.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: And this is not surprising to see against a well-coached UCLA team and a coach that just recently played against this Oregon scheme with a much better quarterback in the college football playoff last year with James Madison.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: And to me, this means Oregon is toast.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: The way they've played this year, I don't think that they're going to get enough respect from people.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: And if Dante Moore is smart about this, he will not risk his health to return to this two-loss team midway through this year.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: I think they're toast.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: And on the flip side, one more special shout out to UCLA.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: I got to give some love to running back Wayne Knight yet again.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: He had over 100 yards in this game against Oregon and a touchdown.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: He came over with head coach Bob Chesney from James Madison.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: He was one of the best running backs in the Sunbelt Conference last year.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: And he's been one of the best running backs in all of college football this season.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Wayne Knight is the real deal.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Great win there for the UCLA Bruins.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: Finishing up in our big game breakdown, the Texas AM Aggies traveled to Columbia, Missouri to take on the 14th-ranked Missouri Tigers.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: And Mizzou completely dominated Texas AM on defense.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: A week after holding Jaden Ball to 12 carries for 13 yards, Mizzou's defense allowed Texas AM 29 rushing yards on 23 carries.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: That's under 1.2 yards per carry for those math majors out there.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: A tremendous defensive performance from the Missouri Tigers.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Treasurer Greco had two interceptions, including a big one in the end zone, on a sudden change on the first drive of the game.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Austin Simmons, I don't know if there's enough good superlatives to say about that young man.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: He deserves praise, he deserves respect.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: And mostly and most importantly, he deserves to be feared by opposing defenses and opposing defensive coordinators.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: I don't think that he was on anybody's radar for how great he has been this season, but the arm talent combined with the weapons that Mizzou has on the outside, Donovan Alubide, Caden Lee, Brett Norfleet at tight end, Caleb Goody in the slot.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: They have a lot of weapons.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: I didn't even mention a few other guys, uh, Demarion Folks, Nayshawn Montgomery.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: They have a ton of great skill players on the outside.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: And Austin Simmons can absolutely fit that ball in wherever he needs to.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: He has been tremendous all season.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: He only has one interception on the season, and it was a tipped pass on the first drive against Texas AM.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Um, really not his fault at all.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: His right guard, Curtis Pliegler, got completely blown up on that play.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: Austin Simmons has been tremendous.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: He deserves to be respected, praised, and like I said, mostly feared.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: Last note from the Mizzou AM game, Mizzou running back Jamal Roberts.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: I know we don't have Ahmad Hardy holding it down in the backfield, but Jamal Roberts has set SEC history with 200 yards and two touchdowns in back-to-back weeks, sharing that record with Henry and Leonard Fournette.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: A few other notable performances around college football from week six before we get into week seven.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Number 20, Iowa pounds the Washington Huskies on the road.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: They jumped out to a 27 to nothing halftime lead and held on 41 to 24.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Jeremy Heklinski with a fantastic 202 yards and three touchdowns, leading Iowa to a big time victory against the Washington Huskies.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Washington, your season is over.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: The Maryland Terrapins, they held Jeremiah Smith to just four catches on Saturday.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: The problem was two of those were touchdowns, and Ohio State rolled to a 45-16 win, and Maryland is 2-4 and spiraling.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: USC improves to 6-1 with a strong showing on the road in Happy Valley against Penn State.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: They got a 31-23 victory, thanks in large part to a great game from Jaden Maieva, their quarterback who went 21 of 33 for 301 yards for the Trojans.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Boise State, they survived a strong effort from the Fresno State Bulldogs to keep their group of six playoff hopes alive.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Boise State snuck out of there with a 38-31 victory.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: Florida, they got absolutely abused by South Carolina quarterback Lenore Sellers.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: Lenores had 279 yards and four touchdowns.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: And the hot seat under Shane Beamer slightly cools.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Slightly cools as they got a 38-19 road victory over the Florida Gators.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: A few of our best performances from week six.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Oregon State freshman wide receiver Jesse Legree.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Man, this guy needs to be talked about.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: He needs to be talked about all day and night.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: He is a freshman free phenom from Baltimore, Maryland, who went all the way across the country to Oregon State.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: And Saturday against San Diego State University.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: He had 10 catches for 191 yards and three touchdowns, bringing his season totals up to 932 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Absolutely incredible from that freshman there.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: Louisville running back Isaac Brown, who had lost his job to their starting running back, K-John Brown, who was hurt and left this game, started in replace of him and went 17 carries for 235 yards and two touchdowns, and essentially iced the end of this game against the Florida State Seminoles last Friday night.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: I mentioned Jamal Roberts and that historic performance that he has now in back-to-back weeks.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: He went 34 for 222 and two touchdowns against Texas AM.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: And lastly, Arizona Wildcat wide receiver Isaiah Mizell.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: He had six catches, 183 yards, and two touchdowns in a big, Big 12 win for the Wildcats, 52-31 over the West Virginia Mountaineers.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: Now let's move on to our week seven preview and our tail the tailgate segment.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: And on the season this year, we are 31, 24, and one.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: We are up a whopping 4.2 units.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Last week we went 5-3, and we were up 1.65 units, just chugging along during this college football season.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: So it's time to make our picks for week seven.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: Starting off with the game of the week, number four, Ohio State.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: They traveled to Bloomington, Indiana to take on the fifth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Ohio State comes into this game, favored by three and a half on the road.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 51 and a half.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: And I'll tell you what, we are rolling with the Hoosiers.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: I think they got the sloppy out of their system last week in a slight trap game, but I do believe that Indiana is well coached, well positioned to play this game at home in a close matchup and pull off the upset again.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: I think they own a mental advantage over Ohio State.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: I do not think they will let Jeremiah Smith beat them like everybody else does.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take the Indiana Hoosiers plus three and a half against Ohio State.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Our next game, number 13, Missouri, their five-and-one record.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: They take on the road to Oxford, Mississippi to face the ninth-ranked Ole Miss Rebels.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: Ole Miss is favored in this game by six points.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 59.5.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: We've mentioned the outstanding rushing defense for the University of Missouri.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: And I also think that Ole Miss is going to play a more conservative style of game, knowing that Missouri has equal firepower from a passing perspective on the other side.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: I think Mizzou will force Ole Miss to be one-dimensional against their old teammate in Kowan Lacey.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take the under 59 and a half.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Seems very contrary to how these two teams might match up on paper.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: But I think stylistically, for Mizoo to win this game, which obviously I am rooting for on the Tailgate Cam podcast, for Mizzou to win this game, I think it needs to go under.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: If this game is in the 60s, 70s, or even 80s in points, Mizzou will not win this game.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take the under 59 and a half in Oxford, Mississippi.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Moving out to Provo, Utah, the number two in undefeated 6-0.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: Notre Dame Fighting Irish travel on to Provo, Utah to face the number eight ranked BYU Cougars who sit at 5-0.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Notre Dame takes a 10.5 point favor in this game with the over-under setting at 46.5.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take a kind of a sneaky play here.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: I do think that BYU could come back late in this game and maybe force this to be a cover or possibly win the game.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: But I do I like Notre Dame's advantage at the quarterback position to start this big game in a positive way.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: I don't think they're going to make a ton of mistakes early on.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: This crowd can be very, very loud, but I'm going to take Notre Dame first half minus six.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: I like Notre Dame's positioning to be able to run the football on Notre Dame and CJ Carr at the helm for Notre Dame to be able to throw the ball all over the field.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Give me Notre Dame in the first half minus six.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Now let's stay in the Big 12 and let's head to Houston, Texas, where the number 20 ranked Houston Cougars and their 5-1 record host the number 18 and 4-1 Oklahoma State Cowboys.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: Houston is favored in this game by 4.5.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 62 and a half.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: I've said it all season.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: I've said it in the preseason when I gave out a few dark horses.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: Houston is a team that I like.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: Houston is a team that I believe in.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: I love Connor Wegman.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: I love Mikai Hughes.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: I love Sanford, their other running back.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: And Willie Fritz is a big game coach.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: I think Oklahoma State, this is the peak of what their value will be in the public's eyes.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: I'm taking Houston, minus four and a half at home.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: I think this is a great spot for the Couggs.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Give me Houston all day and night, baby.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Let's move down to the ACC for an in-state Florida rivalry.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: The 3-3 Florida State Seminoles, fresh off of their Friday night loss to Louisville on the road.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: They traveled down to Coral Gables to face the 5-0 and number three ranked Miami Hurricanes.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: Miami is favored in this game by 21.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 55 and a half.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: And I'll cut it straight to the point.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: I think Miami will be incredibly motivated to not let Ashton Daniels run all over them.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: And so far this season, that seems like the only consistent way that Florida State can muster consistent offense.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: And if Miami stops that, I think that this game is going under.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: I think there's a chance Miami could shut out Florida State.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take the under 55 and a half here in Coral Gables between Florida State and Miami.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: I know Florida State's defense is nothing to write home about, but they should be motivated in this game, especially in the first half.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: I like the under 55 and a half here.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: Let's go back to the West Coast number 12 UCLA in their 5-0 record, fresh off of their big upset win over Oregon.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: They host 4-1 Wisconsin, who has won four straight games since their opening weekend loss in Notre Dame.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: UCLA is favored slightly at home by two and a half.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 43.5.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: This is a very, very interesting matchup.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: I have been on UCLA's praises since the beginning of the season.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: I have been a big fan of what Bob Chesney's done.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, but I think this is a letdown spot.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: I think that this is a letdown spot for the Bruins for two reasons.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: One, they have played a pretty hard schedule, a lot of travel.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: They went to Maryland, went to Oregon and back-to-back weeks and played extremely well.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: And now they return home, sleepy kind of kickoff.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe they're not thinking about Wisconsin and Luke Fickle.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: But I'll tell you what, there might be some whoops of Daisy with Colton Joseph, Wisconsin's quarterback.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: He has a tendency to turn the ball over, but that guy can also move and he can throw.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: And that is the recipe for an underdog to get a road victory.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: Give me the Badgers on the money line.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Wisconsin moneyline is the pick here in Los Angeles.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: Let's move back to the SEC for our last two games.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: Number six, Alabama, in their five and one record, fresh off of that game against Georgia last weekend.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: They traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee for one of the oldest, most hate-filled rivalries in all of college football.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: Alabama, Tennessee, number 14, Tennessee.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: They are home underdogs to Bama.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: Bama comes into this game favored by eight and a half.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 51 and a half.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: I do not, I am not a fan of what head coach Josh Heidel has done.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: They brought in their five-star freshman quarterback, Faison Brandon.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: They let him go through the ringer.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: They start him at home in front of college game day against number one Texas.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: And then you bench him the next week against Arkansas.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Like that's where that guy's supposed to get his confidence back.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: I'm not a fan.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: George McIntyre did not inspire confidence last week in that game against Arkansas.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take the Tennessee team total under 21.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: I think Alabama has a strong propensity to force turnovers, as I highlighted on the podcast last week, led by defensive coordinator Kane Womack.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take Tennessee and their team total under 21.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: And for our last game, not something that I want to see.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: The four and two Florida Gators, they travel to Austin, Texas to take on the number seven Texas Longhorns.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: They are going to be upset.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: They are going to be angry.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: But the good news is for the Florida Gators, Arch is still the quarterback for the Texas Longhorns.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: In the last few games that I've seen, that has not gone well for the Texas Longhorns.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: The over-under for this game is set at 52 and a half.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go under 52.5.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: I think Texas' defense is absolutely for real.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: I think Florida's defense is motivated in this game.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: I think Arch should be motivated.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: They lost on the road in the swamp last year to a bad Florida team.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: But I think that both defenses step up.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: I think that this is a closer than expected game.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: I think Texas could pull away late, but I expect this to be low scoring.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: Give me the under 52 and a half.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: Now, before we do our quick roundup recap, a few other notable games this weekend.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: Number 16, Mississippi State, without quarterback Camario Taylor, who got hurt in the game against Alabama.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: They travel on the road to now number 22 ranked LSU and they're off their second loss at Kentucky.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Virginia, they traveled to number 24 SMU for a big matchup in the ACC.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: 25th ranked Northwestern in the Wildcats.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: They traveled to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: And like I said, the Kentucky Wildcats all the way up to number 15.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: They take that number 15 ranking out to Norman, Oklahoma this weekend for a matchup between Kentucky and the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Now to recap our picks, we are on Indiana plus three and a half.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: The under 59.5 in Missoula and Old Miss.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: Notre Dame first half minus six.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: Houston minus four and a half.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Miami, Florida State, under 55.5.
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: The Wisconsin Badgers Money Line.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: Tennessee team total under 21.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: And Florida, Texas, under 52 and a half.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: Those are our tail the tailgate picks for the week.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: So it is time to wrap up our episode with our gold star of the weekend.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: I thought about this.
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: I thought about where I could go with this.
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: There was a lot of great performances.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: I highlighted some just from the college football landscape.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: There were some great performances all day, like Jalen Warren in the NFL.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Um, great performances all day long.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: But what is the point of having your own podcast if you can't be a little biased?
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give the gold star of the weekend to Jacksonville Jaguars running back, Amir Abdullah.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: That man captivated the heart of a city with his own two feet with eight seconds left in the game in London in Wembley Stadium, where the Tottenham Spurs play, not very well, I might add, but the Tottenham Spurs play in Wembley Stadium, and Amir Abdullah with eight seconds left, returned that kickoff all the way out to the 38-yard line of the Philadelphia Eagles to set up a game-winning field goal from Jaguars kicker Cam Little.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Amir Abdullah, you are the hero, you are the gold star of the weekend.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: And what to watch this week on the Tailgate Cam podcast?
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: What are we watching?
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: WNBA Finals Game One, I mentioned, is on Saturday at one or at 3:30 p.m.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: Eastern on Peacock and NBC between the Valkyrie and the Atlanta Dream.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: We will be tuned in on the Tailgate Cam podcast to all of the WNBA Finals games.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: Loaded slate, uh, nice UFC card this weekend.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: There are sports all around.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Next week, we will have a guest on to break down the preview of the NBA season.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: And we will be back tomorrow with our NFL picks and our soccer roundup.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for listening to the Tailgate Cam podcast.
