- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You the adventurer?
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, you.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Do you desire knowledge of immense worlds and arcane power?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: A codex of untold stories and lore?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Or perhaps simply easy listening for your daily commute?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Then feast your eyes, or more accurately, yes, upon Dungeon Pedia.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Shit's about to get nerdy in here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: Taylor Stanfield.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: And I'm Travis Peasley.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: Happy New Year!
- 0:52SPEAKER_05: We've all survived the horrors of 2019.
- 0:56SPEAKER_05: You know what?
- 0:57SPEAKER_05: I mean, it wasn't that bad, but it wasn't great.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: It was not not great as a generous way to describe it.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: And I'm continuing my grand, I don't even know how many years tradition of being sick on New Year's.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm not the only thing I've got left is that stupid drainage, but Yeah.
- 1:17SPEAKER_05: So I wonder if at this point it's just like your body's normal thing, like, oh, it's getting close to New Year's, it's time to get sick again.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, it's like your body knows that it's been like 360 odd days, so you just start getting ill.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: See, that used to happen to me with my birthday, and you know this.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: I used to always get sick around my birthday.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: It was bullshit.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: It was total bullshit.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: But you know what, everyone, we survived the year.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: We lived on, we're living on to go into 2020 and learn more about Dungeons and Dragons.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 1:49SPEAKER_05: Also, you know what's in 2020 for me?
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: What?
- 1:52SPEAKER_05: It's my freaking 10-year reunion from high school.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, God.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Sometimes I forget how old you are.
- 2:00SPEAKER_05: It'll be 10 years May of 2020 that I have graduated that hellscape of high school.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: See, I was freaking out about it having been five years for me.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Not that they do anything at our high school for five years, but I just realized when I was talking to one of my coworkers about it that like I graduated high school like five and a half years ago.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's it's a weird feeling.
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: But um in any case, we do hope that you guys had a fun and safe New Year's Eve, New Year's Day.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because this is coming out on New Year's Eve.
- 2:32SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: So like be safe tonight.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: If you know you're drinking, be smart.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and if you had a if you had a wild New Year's Adam, I hope it was at least safe.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: And hopefully you guys aren't too hungover for work tomorrow if you work.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, because if you drink, falls on a Tuesday.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: And tell all of my fellow retail and general service industry workers workers.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: I'm with you, bud.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 3:05SPEAKER_05: Our work doesn't close for New Year's, doesn't close for Christmas, doesn't close for shit.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Our work doesn't close.
- 3:11SPEAKER_05: Our work doesn't close.
- 3:12SPEAKER_05: It doesn't even close for like five inches of ice on the ground.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: Literally anything.
- 3:17SPEAKER_05: So we understand your pain.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: We get you.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: And if and if 2019 hasn't been a good year for you, because I'll be honest, hasn't been a spectacular year for me, despite the blessing that Dungeon Pedia has been to my life.
- 3:30SPEAKER_03: And also projectile dysfunction.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: If it hasn't been the best year for you, I hope 2020's better.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, me me too.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: And you know, my year's been, I would say, pretty, pretty great as far as like years have been.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: And I I just I hope that things just continue to be exciting moving forward.
- 3:49SPEAKER_05: Well, hopefully.
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: I guess we're gonna end everybody's 2019 on a part two.
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, we're going straight back to the beholders.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm so proud of you, Travis, for doing what I cannot do.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: You might say that beholders have 2020 vision.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: Title of this episode.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: Title of this episode.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: Alright, nope.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: That was fair.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: Crushed it.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: That was really good.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Crushed it.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: Got in one.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Got in one.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: So uh I am actually going further past second edition this time.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: I would hope so.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: That one's like if part one was like through second edition, and then the second part is just like all the time.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: All second edition.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: Part two is in all second edition.
- 4:37SPEAKER_05: I am still going through a few other interesting things I found from the second edition iTyrant book.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: I read through a little bit more, just a little things that were kind of interesting, and I'll be honest, might be slightly gross and/or disturbing to some people.
- 4:52SPEAKER_05: So here's your uh pre-warning for that one.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: See, you say that to like warn some other people, but you would say that to like entice me.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is nasty, and I would be like, give it to me.
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: Correct.
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: Well.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: So before I get into that though, I did find something pretty interesting that I just wanted to point out.
- 5:09SPEAKER_05: So there was someone I found, Keith Parkinson.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:13unknown: Cool.
- 5:14SPEAKER_05: Uh he was an artist for TSR for five years.
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: Uh back early on, I believe uh 1982 is when he joined TSR.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:24SPEAKER_05: He is actually the artist that characterized the more like popular appearance of the beholder with the like armor-like scales and those like jointed anthropod-like eyeball stalks.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: So not just a ball with eyes.
- 5:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: Not a round boy.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he was the one that characterized that more popular version that we have now.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: I just saw that and was really cool and also a little sad because he is also no longer with us.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: Uh Keith Parkinson passed away in 2005 from complications of leukemia.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: Rest in peace, Keith Parkinson.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: And thank you.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: Thank you for these lumpy boys.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Yes, thank you for the clearly superior lumpy boy.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: So I just wanted to throw that out there first.
- 6:07SPEAKER_05: Give him credit where credit is definitely due.
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: Now, on to iTyrant.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: The interesting things I found.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: Part two.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: Part two.
- 6:16SPEAKER_05: Um, so I found out that they do not urinate.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: Great.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: I'm really glad that we've established that.
- 6:24SPEAKER_05: Which I touched a little bit on in the first one, but they do not urinate.
- 6:28SPEAKER_05: Cool.
- 6:29SPEAKER_05: Um they do, however, leave behind these stone-like droppings.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: No.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, they're like um like birds and and snakes.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: It's all just all just in one.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: But instead of like birds and snakes, how theirs is like liquidy, these are not.
- 6:50SPEAKER_05: These are legitimately solid.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: They like pass kidney stones for poop?
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: Pretty much.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: So it says that these droppings look like steaming masses of a mix between sand and sedimentary rocks.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: Cool.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: They are like a kidney stone a little bit.
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: Well, they are usually five to six cubic feet in volume.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: Oh my.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Not quite a kidney stone.
- 7:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Although I'll be honest, it felt like one.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: No.
- 7:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: That's too big.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: That's too big.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: How big are beholders again?
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, in second edition, I believe they are up to four feet in diameter.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: Which I know cubic feet is like a different thing.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: But well, I didn't go through.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: Is it though?
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: Like in this context, like that's like that feels like it would like take up way too much of the beholder for it to have internal organs.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: Okay, I will I will raise you a claim.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Think about our dogs.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Think about how much poop they produce for their body size.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: It's too much.
- 7:53SPEAKER_05: It is quite a bit.
- 7:54SPEAKER_05: That doesn't really okay, that doesn't really I don't want to talk about this actually.
- 8:00SPEAKER_05: So, alright, we'll skip past that a little bit.
- 8:04SPEAKER_05: We'll skip past that part.
- 8:05SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 8:06SPEAKER_05: The beholder poop, I guess, will harden into like a rock, like as hard as a rock within a couple of days.
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: And once they do that, they are virtually impossible to distinguish what is an actual rock and what is beholder poop.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Because it sounds like the contents are actually very much the same, like sediments and minerals and stuff, like rock, beholder poop, kind of the same thing, just different sources.
- 8:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 8:39SPEAKER_05: So if you're in a beholder layer and you pick up a rock, oh no.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: It's possible that that's not a rock.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 8:46SPEAKER_05: And the only significance that these droppings have is to help determine if a beholder has moved into the area.
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: But only if you catch it when they're still kind of like fresh-ish and steaming, so only within the first couple of days.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: So you better hope that that beholder really has a bad digestive tract.
- 9:06SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 9:07SPEAKER_05: Um, they can apparently be eaten.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: Uh beholders, not the droppings.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, hypothetically, you could also be able to do that.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: I just want everyone to be aware that that's a possibility in your life.
- 9:21SPEAKER_05: I don't.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: So you can eat a beholder.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: The meat looks like unusually dense and very greasy pork, but tastes like beef jerky that has been soaked in butter and rubbed with sand.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: This is upsetting.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: Okay, uh I'm not claiming that I really know anything about this kind of thing, but I did look it up.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: Apparently, five cubic feet would not be is not unreasonably large.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: Because apparently the cubic feet of a beholder, if you average it four feet across each way, is 64 square feet.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: So that's not unreasonable.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's that's still unreasonably big for poop, probably, but but I mean the beholder is also big.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: And again, I don't I don't know anything about that kind of math, really.
- 10:15SPEAKER_05: Someone else that's really like knowledgeable about that can help us here.
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, about cubic feet versus the diameter of something.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: Tell us if that's and how many cubic feet of poop you can contain.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: Like, tell us if it's if it's okay.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: Just just just tweet at us, please, please.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: Anyway, I'm sorry.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Uh also, I can't for some reason the image pops into my head of Gordon Ramsay trying to beholder meat and just laying into the guy for picking beholder meat.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: It's so raw, it's still producing an anti-magic feel.
- 10:50SPEAKER_05: Ah, yes.
- 10:52SPEAKER_05: Oh no, if Gordon Ramsay ever hears of this.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: Please don't.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: Like, we're sorry.
- 10:57SPEAKER_05: I just hope that you laugh at it because I love Gordon Ramsay personally.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: Gordon Ramsay's great, and I realize that like I can't do that accent.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: But the the joke popped into my head.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: And the meme is good, so the meme is super good.
- 11:10SPEAKER_05: A beholder can feed a village of 50, like an average beholder.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:16SPEAKER_05: Can feed a village of 50, so there's quite a bit of meat to it.
- 11:19SPEAKER_05: There is one slight catch to beholders and cooking them, I guess.
- 11:24SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 11:25SPEAKER_05: Um, you have to prepare the meat, cook it, and serve it all within six hours of it being killed.
- 11:31SPEAKER_05: Otherwise, apparently, beholders just turn into a solid mass after they're killed.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, kind of like their poops.
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they just turn into like this very hard, solid, dead beholder.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: So literally, you like can't save any of the meat.
- 11:45SPEAKER_05: No, you cannot save it.
- 11:47SPEAKER_05: I believe it did mention something about using a specific spell that could help lengthen Oh yeah.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: There's the time of it.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's uh would General Repose work, maybe?
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: General Repose would probably work.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: Um because it sounds like it'd be part of their decaying process.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: General repose holds off decay.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: And then I think there's actually like some I could be thinking of Pathfinder with this, but I think there are actually some spells to like preserve food longevity, and it includes meat.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know that there's spells to purify food and water.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: And that might be.
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: I mean, purification might work in this case.
- 12:24SPEAKER_05: I'm not sure on that one.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: Or it might not work because beholders are just unholy to begin with.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: So true.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: It might just melt it and just gets rid of it, and it's like, there, that's how you purify a beholder.
- 12:35SPEAKER_05: So this particular thing I picked out uh for Lewin.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: Oh, just for me.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: So you cannot raise a beholder from infancy to adulthood and it still be loyal to you.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: No.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: You cannot.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: Wait, what is why is that for me?
- 12:52SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: I figured you would enjoy that.
- 12:55SPEAKER_05: I figured your mind would have gone to can I raise a baby beholder?
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: The answer is no.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Sad.
- 13:01SPEAKER_05: Um, the hatred and paranoia of other races that beholders have are inherited.
- 13:08SPEAKER_05: So eventually, even if you like feed it and like bathe it every day, it will grow to hate you and eventually kill you.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, so just like regular children.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: Jesus.
- 13:22SPEAKER_05: I don't see a problem with that.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: I I have nothing to say to that.
- 13:26SPEAKER_05: So um in this book, it does mention something fairly different about reproduction.
- 13:33SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 13:34SPEAKER_05: Um, this is just a little one-liner thing that I have here.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: Um it says that it gives birth to live young instead of like eggs.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: And usually three to six at a time.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Okay, so now it no longer lays eggs.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: It just pukes up live.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: I prefer I prefer the eggs, honestly.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Live babies.
- 13:53SPEAKER_05: Oh, don't worry.
- 13:54SPEAKER_05: I've got more about reproduction a little bit later.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: I'm so glad that we talk about beholder sex and like waste removal so much.
- 14:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Like, I I feel like that should be a featured segment of every creature episode we do.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: Is like, how does this thing fuck and how does this thing poop?
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: But what if we don't know?
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: Well, we need to try to our best to find out.
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: Um, this might make people a little sad.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: Oh kinda depending.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: Um, beholders have been known to contract diseases, though they can't contract them from humans and vice versa.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Right, they're not um communicable.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Communicable.
- 14:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:33SPEAKER_05: But one of the diseases that has been observed is spasms.
- 14:38unknown: Oh gosh.
- 14:38SPEAKER_05: Which is actually like the worst thing that a beholder fears as far as like illnesses go, because it is a degenerative condition that sets in during their like elder age period.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Um, it causes them to slowly start to lose like mental coherence.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: They'll start levitating in like a random direction.
- 14:59SPEAKER_05: The eye stalks can start spasming from what people said in apparent pain and will like just randomly attack any creature that the eyes come across.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: So this is kind of like the Alzheimer's dementia of beholders for the whole thing.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: Pretty much.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: They last between 10 to 15 minutes at first when like the first onset.
- 15:22SPEAKER_05: And they get worse over time and occur more and more often until eventually they will just spasm continuously.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: Oh Lord.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: See, like at first, I thought that it was almost funny for a second because when you said spasms, I was just imagining like a vibrating beholder.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: And I was like, funny, but that's like no seriously sad, actually.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: Like I'm they're definitely assholes, but like they're deplorable creatures.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: But that's like what sucks.
- 15:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: It it is.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: While most beholders are uh what's the word?
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: Solitary.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: There have been cases of beholders being found in a hive.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: Ooh.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: Though that is like incredibly more rare.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and you mentioned beholder cities.
- 16:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, with the cities and stuff.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: A hive consists of a hive mother, and then either and then anywhere between five to ten beholders, or in extremely rare occasions, five to twenty abominations and beholder kin.
- 16:27SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
- 16:27SPEAKER_04: Hmm.
- 16:28SPEAKER_05: And this is actually usually there to establish the start of a beholder city.
- 16:36SPEAKER_06: Ah, okay.
- 16:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: Or also, in some cases, the destruction of a human or demi-human community if the beholders look at them like, yeah, we kind of want to get rid of them.
- 16:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_05: So it also talks about how they wound up in the multiverse, which I did mention a little bit before.
- 16:54SPEAKER_05: This one is slightly different.
- 16:57SPEAKER_05: Rather than the Great Mother, I believe it was called.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: Yes, I want to say.
- 17:03SPEAKER_05: This involves a true breed beholder named Vicrispa.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: God, they got great names though.
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: They do.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: Their naming schemes are pretty good.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: Uh she lost her sight in a battle.
- 17:15SPEAKER_05: Oh, that sucks.
- 17:16SPEAKER_05: Like, like her main eye.
- 17:18SPEAKER_05: And eventually became the first beholder mage.
- 17:21unknown: Hmm.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: Uh over time she was able to develop the ability to travel across planes.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: Well, that's badass.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, pretty good.
- 17:29SPEAKER_05: And as I stated in the last one, most of it is in search of knowledge.
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: They're just knowledge junkies, basically.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: Oh man, imagine like her main like big eye is just like all cloudy and like fucked up.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: Like, imagine how cool that would be.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: That would be really cool.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: She's got like a big scar like through it.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, that'd be dope.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: I love eye trauma.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: By that I mean I hate it.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: But the result would look cool, I feel like, in this case.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: You gotta roll it, roll with it.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 17:58SPEAKER_05: She would take true breed beholders with her, like during the travels between the planes and everything.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: And sooner or later there was a force of false breed beholders that were badly beaten during warfare with the true breeds.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: So would these be like the traitor beholders?
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah to the descendants of the traitors?
- 18:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, these are like the descendants of the traitors, basically.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: Um they finally actually managed to capture Vicrispa and stole her knowledge of planar travel, and then they fled to other planes in hopes of growing their numbers to eventually return to destroy the true breeds.
- 18:39SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 18:39SPEAKER_05: So that's how they wound up just across like the entire multiverse, according to this particular theory, is Vic Rispa, basically.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: So did it say where she was originally from?
- 18:51SPEAKER_05: It did not.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: It just mentioned her.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Okay, cool.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: So hell.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Probably.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Probably.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, not probably, not literally.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: I'm not literally saying the nine hells, but like hell.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: Because they nasty.
- 19:04SPEAKER_05: And now we're going to jump to third edition.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: Yay.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: We made it out of second edition.
- 19:09SPEAKER_05: We made it out of second edition.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: It took forever, but we did it.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: We did it.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: Across two episodes.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: So in third edition, they appear back in the monster manual.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: In this edition, they are now marked as being six feet wide.
- 19:23SPEAKER_05: So they have now grown even more.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: They're just expanding slowly.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: Um, they no longer have knowledge of every language.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: Like they don't speak every language as opposed to from the earlier earlier versions.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: But now they speak their own beholder language and common.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: Which seems kind of weird for a race that knows so much that they don't speak most languages, but I'm not really gonna question that, I guess.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I guess it's more like if you speak the trade language enough to comprehend everyone and you speak your own language, you probably get a little bit of an ego about it.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: I mean they speak.
- 20:06SPEAKER_05: They're very egotistical creatures.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: So they speak two languages, so they're doing better than I am.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: This is true.
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: Same here.
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: Same.
- 20:14SPEAKER_05: Uh each of its eyes produce its magical effects once around, or I'm sorry, can once around.
- 20:22SPEAKER_05: Though they can still only aim three of the eye rays at targets and like any one arc.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, is it three now?
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: It used to be four, right?
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, actually, I believe I believe so.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: Early on it was four, it's now been cut to three.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they got nerfed.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: They're expanding, but their abilities are being diminished.
- 20:41SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 20:42SPEAKER_05: Very slowly.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: They still have the ability to, if attacked from above, just shoot all of them up.
- 20:49SPEAKER_05: Oh man.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: Uh their rays have a hundred and fifty-foot range, and due to their like numerous eyes and everything, they obviously can't be flanked.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:59SPEAKER_05: That hasn't changed either, which still makes sense that if they can see and the eyes twist in every direction.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like it's gonna be damn near impossible, if not just outright impossible, to sneak up on them.
- 21:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:13SPEAKER_05: There I'm gonna touch a little bit on some variants because I thought uh some of them were kind of cool.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: Hell yeah.
- 21:19SPEAKER_05: There are four variants that are listed in the monstrous compendium Monsters of Pharun from third edition.
- 21:26SPEAKER_05: Uh the one that I'm going to cover is actually Vikrispa's Beholder Mage.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: They have now made a Beholder Mage variant for the game for DMs to use.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: Modeled after her.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:39SPEAKER_05: Pretty much.
- 21:40SPEAKER_05: Though it is written kind of strangely, because the Beholder Mage is listed as a prestige class.
- 21:48SPEAKER_05: And gives the following requirements before a creature can become a Beholder Mage.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: Uh one, they must be of the Beholder race.
- 21:58SPEAKER_05: Okay, cool.
- 21:59SPEAKER_05: Uh Two, they must put out their central eye disabling the anti-magic ray.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: So gotta blind yourself.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: Stab yourself in the eye.
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: Huh.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's just those two requirements.
- 22:13SPEAKER_05: So it's not really much of a prestige class.
- 22:16SPEAKER_05: It does say that a lot of beholders are kind of against disabling their biggest like eye purposely.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, that feels kind of intrinsically anti-yourself.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: Also, like, I don't want to stab myself in the eye.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: You know, if somebody told me that if I just stab myself in the eye, I could do magic, like, I would probably do it.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, you got two of them, so well, yeah, that that's the difference.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Is I I have two of them.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: And they have eleven.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: Eleven.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: Well, but that that's their big one.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: That's their big one.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: If I had one eye that was better than the other ones, I probably wouldn't want to stab it out.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: Also, just a quick note I'm very sorry that uh Prince is here to also offer his commentary.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 23:02SPEAKER_05: Yes, he has uh gotten very clingy in the past couple days.
- 23:05SPEAKER_05: I think it might be the cold weather.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: He really liked the first beholder episode and he heard us talking about him again and was like, Dad, I want to hear.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: Tell me about beholders, Dad.
- 23:16SPEAKER_05: So he's sitting outside the door yelling at us.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: So sorry if that comes through.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:21SPEAKER_05: Uh their hit dice is set to a D4 for a Beholder Mage.
- 23:26SPEAKER_05: I think usually it's a D10.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's very bad.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's um not good.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: That sucks, actually.
- 23:37SPEAKER_05: Um they know six cantrips starting at first level, and they know six cantrips all the way down at that point.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: Their cantrips never change as far as the amount that they know.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:49SPEAKER_05: This is the kind of interesting part that I really like though.
- 23:51SPEAKER_05: When they gain the ability to cast new levels of spells, so basically when they level up, uh, they actually have to sacrifice one of their eye stalks.
- 24:02SPEAKER_05: Man.
- 24:02SPEAKER_05: Once they do this, that eye stalk that they sacrifice loses its spell-like ability, but now is used to cast that level of spell that it was sacrificed for.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's kind of cool.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Nice.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: So you lose your ability to put people to sleep, but now you can set things on fire and make them sleep forever.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 24:23SPEAKER_05: So if you know they sacrifice that for level five spells, that one I stalk can cast level five spells.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's like the it's like the level of a spell, not even just like one new spell.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, it's the whole level.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: That's the whole level.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh.
- 24:37SPEAKER_05: And they do have a list for like, I guess, the DMs that are making this to say they know so or they have so many spell slots for this level.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: But yeah, that's just that one eye is there for that one spell level.
- 24:51SPEAKER_03: And so at one point, at some point, you could hypothetically stop and have all these like doe spells, but also still have your death ray.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:59unknown: Cool.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, if I'm correct, third edition has only up to ninth level spells.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Uh well, actually, I could be wrong on that.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: I know that's the case now in fifth edition.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: I'll tell you they don't have 12th level spells.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: So well, at some point, so you could just save your your death ray for last.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: Travis, I I want you to kill my character so I can play as a beholder mage.
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: No.
- 25:22SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, they do not require any physical spell components because their central eye, once this whole transformation happens, acts as an arcane focus for their spells.
- 25:34SPEAKER_05: Cool.
- 25:35SPEAKER_05: Uh the semantic.
- 25:39SPEAKER_05: The somatic components are supplied by the weaving and waving of its spell stocks.
- 25:47SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 25:48SPEAKER_05: That's pretty cool.
- 25:50SPEAKER_05: And then the verbal components are supplied by the beholder singing its special spell casting song.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: That's amazing, actually.
- 25:59SPEAKER_05: They cannot talk or use their mouth for anything else the round that they cast any spells because they do have the bite attack.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: But basically, they sing and cast spells.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: Okay, but here's the thing: like, we we all have a visual on beholders.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: Their singing voices are actually beautiful.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: Imagine that.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: That would be interesting.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: That would be interesting.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: Like it's just an ugly, lumpy looking little thing with a fucked up eye, but like it opens its mouth and it just has the voice of like a choir boy.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: An angel.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like a choir boy, like that one video of the one who like takes a hit off the helium balloon and then just like that video.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like that.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: I'm in favor.
- 26:44SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 26:44SPEAKER_05: So jump to 3.5.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: Uh in the monster manual for 3.5, they have two different types of beholders listed.
- 26:54SPEAKER_05: You have the beholder.
- 26:56SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 26:56SPEAKER_05: Like the normal beholder.
- 26:57SPEAKER_05: And then you have something called the goth.
- 27:01SPEAKER_05: Before you get excited, it's G-U-A-T-H.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: But I had to look it up, and from my understanding, the pronunciation is just goth.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: I know, I know you just made that caveat, but let me say, me.
- 27:20SPEAKER_05: Uh the goth is also known as the lesser beholder.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: So they are the weaker version of the normal beholder.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, I can't take this seriously.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: So tell us more about the goth.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: She's right here.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: Hi.
- 27:37SPEAKER_05: Jesus.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: She's also over here.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: Hi.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: We're both pretty good.
- 27:44SPEAKER_03: Jesus Christ.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: I don't know why this is so funny to me.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Anyway, the goth.
- 27:49SPEAKER_05: They are four feet wide.
- 27:52SPEAKER_05: They have their big central eye, but they only have six smaller eye stalks on top of their head.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 27:59SPEAKER_05: Um, their eye rays have a hundred-foot range rather than the hundred and fifty.
- 28:03SPEAKER_05: And their ray powers are sleep, inflict moderate wounds, dispel magic, scorching ray, paralysis, and exhaustion.
- 28:11SPEAKER_05: So they don't actually have like the death ray.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:14SPEAKER_05: Or disintegrate.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, some of them, those are those are still pretty good though.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: No, they're still pretty good.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: That's an assortment of spells I would like to have.
- 28:21SPEAKER_05: Um, their centralize is also not anti-magic.
- 28:26SPEAKER_05: Uh instead, it casts stunning gaze on anyone who looks at it, which I don't know, just seems odd to me that you would that even a lesser beholder wouldn't have this anti-magic cone.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it kind of feels central to a beholder.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I just I don't know.
- 28:44SPEAKER_05: That one I was kind of like.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: Like you had me at the name and you lost me at the stunning gaze, you know?
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:53SPEAKER_05: But they do still have in 3.5 the regular beholder who has all of the normal things, except for now they are eight feet wide.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Why do they keep getting bigger?
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: They're just they're they're oh my god.
- 29:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 29:10SPEAKER_05: So I'm not gonna do a whole lot of talking about the Noah Beholder because nothing's really changed there from even like third edition monster manual.
- 29:18SPEAKER_05: They have all the same eye powers and bigger.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: They're just getting fucking bigger.
- 29:23SPEAKER_05: Now, there was something really cool that I found for 3.5.
- 29:28SPEAKER_05: And the book Lords of Madness, they actually got their own chapter.
- 29:32SPEAKER_04: Ooh.
- 29:33SPEAKER_05: Uh Lords of Madness was just a supplement book for 3.5.
- 29:37SPEAKER_05: It kind of expanded more on like aberrations and stuff like that.
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 29:42SPEAKER_05: Um, it's this we're now going back to The Great Mother.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Okay, cool.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: She's back.
- 29:48SPEAKER_05: Yep, she's back.
- 29:49SPEAKER_05: It states that she spawned the entire beholder race from her flesh.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: Okay, so like in the normal way?
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: I Oh, what if what was the name?
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: She like cut off pieces of herself and they turned into beholders?
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Possibly?
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: That sounds appropriate for how nasty they are.
- 30:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Here's a hot thought though.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: What if what was her name?
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Vic something?
- 30:12SPEAKER_05: Vic Rispa?
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: Vic Rispa.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: In my head, I just was calling her Vic.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: What if sh it's one of those things that it's like she's just an alternate form of her great mother?
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
- 30:23SPEAKER_05: She could be.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: Like how for some people it's Asgrass, some people it's Io.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: That would, I mean, that's not really anything.
- 30:29SPEAKER_03: That's just still kind of the cool thought, though.
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: It is a cool thought.
- 30:33SPEAKER_05: So how much do you think a average eight-foot-wide beholder weighs?
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Um, I'll say about a ton and a half.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: I feel like, yeah, I feel like they're pretty dense.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:45SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't know the actual conversion between this because I don't know how much is how many pounds is a ton.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: It would a ton and a half would be three thousand pounds.
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: Okay, so you were actually fairly close to that.
- 30:54SPEAKER_05: Oh, yay.
- 30:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, they are between four thousand to five thousand pounds.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Okay, so about two tons to two and a half tons.
- 31:02SPEAKER_05: Jesus.
- 31:03SPEAKER_05: So they're pretty fucking dense.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll say.
- 31:06SPEAKER_05: Um, they vary drastically in appearance from like smooth, shiny skin to bony, interlocking plates.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: To the hide kind of that I imagine the thick hide.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: They can also have like vastly different variations in color and even design.
- 31:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, the example it gave was like they could have stripes or like spotted skin.
- 31:31SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: Nice, nice, nice, nice, nice.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: Due to this, each beholder thinks of itself as the true form, and any other variations are considered inferior.
- 31:43SPEAKER_05: So humans.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: Damn.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: We all just got called out.
- 31:47SPEAKER_05: Shots fired.
- 31:48SPEAKER_05: And that I should note is actually like mentioned in previous editions as well.
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: I just didn't cover it because I got to that and was like, I'll just cover it here.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because there's the most variation that there's yet.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: Uh their eyeballs are actually like quite hard and solid, like the central eye.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: Ew.
- 32:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, about the same strength as a stone similar in size.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: Oh god, can you imagine touching that?
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: And it's just like I don't want to.
- 32:16SPEAKER_05: Kind of like a solid-ish mass.
- 32:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: It's like, I wonder if it's still like wet though, like eyeballs.
- 32:22SPEAKER_05: Probably.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: This hard, wet mat with whoops.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: Whoops.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: Whoopsie daisies.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's that's gross though.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: I don't know why that's so gross to me.
- 32:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's kind of strange.
- 32:35SPEAKER_05: Um they're nasty.
- 32:37SPEAKER_05: They are.
- 32:38SPEAKER_05: Their eyes, like um the eye stalks.
- 32:41SPEAKER_05: Like the iris, sorry.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: It said it seems to be some sort of like translucent crystal that consists of hundreds of interlocking sheaves.
- 32:51SPEAKER_05: Each of them are capable of their own like independent movement.
- 32:55SPEAKER_05: So the beholder has this great ability to adjust its iris to be as big or as small as it wants.
- 33:02SPEAKER_05: It can even make it to like touch the sides of its eye pole.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: I'm imagining like a camera lens, like it rotating around and like Yeah.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: Uh I don't know why that's so disconcerting to me.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:17SPEAKER_03: Are their eyes different colors?
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: Can they be different colors?
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: Yes, they can.
- 33:21SPEAKER_05: They can be anywhere between brown, blue, green, violet, red, like they can be a lot of different colors as well.
- 33:28SPEAKER_05: Um their eyes also have as many as a dozen like differently sized and shaped lenses, kind of like back behind it, which gives them like superior like 60-foot dark vision.
- 33:43SPEAKER_05: But in brightly lit conditions, this gives them the ability to count the legs of a mosquito at over twice the distance of their 60-foot dark vision.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: Whoa.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: Hawks.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: I can count the legs of a mosquito.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: Six.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: There we go.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: I just know it.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: We just I don't need crazy eyesight beholders.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: Well, here's the thing: beholders probably just know that too, because they're they're so such knowledge junkies.
- 34:15SPEAKER_05: You're right.
- 34:15SPEAKER_05: Damn.
- 34:17SPEAKER_05: So, um, they are gender neutral.
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: Cool.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: And in this, they only become fertile once in their lives.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: I don't like your use of the word fertile.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, guess where we're going?
- 34:31SPEAKER_05: Yes! Remember how earlier I said I had more information on their whole sex lives?
- 34:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, birthing and everything.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: It's it's it's here.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: Oh, we're here.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: We're finally here.
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: Can we not?
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Um can we like yes?
- 34:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, we could not, but I'm gonna.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: Aw, damn it.
- 34:55SPEAKER_05: After the break.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, I don't want to come back from break.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Too bad.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, give me time to prepare.
- 35:02SPEAKER_05: Hey everyone.
- 35:03SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much for listening to our beholders part two episode.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:10SPEAKER_05: I know it's been a little um disturbing.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Nasty.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: Gross.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: Well, but in a fun way.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: Oh well.
- 35:20SPEAKER_05: I think our opinions on that are a little split two to one here.
- 35:24SPEAKER_05: Just um if you like the podcast, which honestly I don't know why you do after this episode, because it's been nasty.

- 36:07SPEAKER_02: And that's definitely something that we're going to do in the future.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we'll probably be rolling it out at some point in the future, but we just uh gotta get shit in order.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, unfortunately, I mean we all know how it goes when you have too many projects and too much shit going on to really get something going that you're excited about.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: Yes.

- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your pastor.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: I don't know why that popped into my head.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, sure.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Why not?
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: I mmm.
- 38:24SPEAKER_05: Only if your pastor's one of those that's not holy against dungeons and dragons.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: Holy cards.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 38:32SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 38:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 38:35SPEAKER_05: That was that was purposeful there.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh, it was?
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry I explained your joke and made it less funny.
- 38:43SPEAKER_05: No, that actually made it even better.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: Well, you know what's even better than any of our jokes?
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: What?
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: That's our theme song, Blacksmith, by Alexander Nakarada.
- 38:52SPEAKER_03: True story.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: So big thank you to him for making our podcast listenable with his music.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Alexander.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: Let's get back through the rest of the episode so we can get back to that second part of Blacksmith.
- 39:06SPEAKER_05: Yay! Back to the beholders.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: I was forced to stay.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you were.
- 39:14SPEAKER_05: So they still give live birth.
- 39:18SPEAKER_05: Cool.
- 39:19SPEAKER_05: It goes into more detail about it though.
- 39:22SPEAKER_05: No.
- 39:22SPEAKER_05: I'm so glad it does.
- 39:24SPEAKER_05: So their womb is below the back of their tongue.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: I'm having a face journey right now.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: Like, I realize that you can't see it, but like I just I what uh I'm having a face journey through a beholder's face, trying to figure out where that is.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: Like where that would be and how big it could be.
- 39:50SPEAKER_05: Pretty pretty massive.
- 39:52SPEAKER_05: Um, it becomes swollen over time.
- 39:55SPEAKER_03: Uh you're using so many bad words, Travis.
- 39:58SPEAKER_05: Oh, here comes another one, too.
- 39:59SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: They just date up to 12 young over a period of six months.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: Believe it or not, we're all adults.
- 40:12SPEAKER_05: Like it's just some of these words are pretty uh pretty pretty out there.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Uh it it's not even just okay, like the words themselves, perfectly fine.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: If we were talking about like humans or animals, like I'd be fine.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like, oh, the gestational period of a human is roughly nine months.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: That's okay.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: But for some reason, thinking about it this way.
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: It makes me angry because I first of all, I I am not really in favor of beholders giving live birth.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: They just do not seem like the correct type of animal to do that.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Second of all, I just don't want to uh just for something, it's just weird.
- 40:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:51SPEAKER_05: So during the final two months of this, I guess I mean I should say like during this whole process, they do have like the increased appetite.
- 41:00SPEAKER_05: They eat more and blah blah blah, all that lovely stuff.
- 41:04SPEAKER_05: Which I guess when you think about what a beholder eats is kind of bad.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: They crave like soy sauce and their ice cream.
- 41:14SPEAKER_05: Soy sauce on their humans.
- 41:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: So during the final two months, the wound grows so big that the mouth cannot shut and the tongue kind of just like hangs out.
- 41:27SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 41:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: Uh when ready, they I don't I do tr try it again.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: That you that is not the phrasing you can use.
- 41:40SPEAKER_05: After the gestation period?
- 41:42SPEAKER_05: Okay, that's it.
- 41:43SPEAKER_05: Okay, that's better.
- 41:43SPEAKER_05: That's better.
- 41:44SPEAKER_05: That's better.
- 41:45SPEAKER_05: Uh they unhinge their jaw.
- 41:47SPEAKER_05: Oh god.
- 41:48SPEAKER_05: They just and regurgitate the entire womb.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 41:56SPEAKER_03: Hello.
- 41:57SPEAKER_05: They then bite off the womb.
- 41:59SPEAKER_05: No! You're not supposed to do that.
- 42:03SPEAKER_05: And it floats gently in the air.
- 42:08SPEAKER_05: Oh man.
- 42:10SPEAKER_05: And the young beholders have to chew their way out.
- 42:15SPEAKER_05: Oh! No!
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: Okay, that.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 42:20SPEAKER_03: First of all, excellent use of the word regurgitate.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: Uh second of all.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: Also, I'm sorry to everyone listening, but I still don't have my voice back, so I'm sorry that it sounds so bad.
- 42:32SPEAKER_03: No!
- 42:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, okay, to be fair, something about the the babies having to eat their way out of the uh uterine lining.
- 42:43SPEAKER_03: Let's just throw some more words out there.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: Like something about that makes sense to me for the way beholders are.
- 42:51SPEAKER_03: Like the you you're only allowed to like live if you're strong enough.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Like eat your way out of there.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: So I will say I don't like it at all.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: I think it's bad.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: I think it's gross.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: But something about the sack being being thrown no, not that it not being thrown up, but the fact that they are in a sack that exits the chariot.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: Does it feel better?
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: Because it's almost an egg.
- 43:19SPEAKER_02: It reminds me of shark the shark types of sharks who give live birth.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Um, like dogfish.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: They have those weird, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: It's like a soft egg.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:29SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 43:30SPEAKER_05: Um, the harrowing journey is not quite over.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 43:34SPEAKER_05: Okay, I should enough relaxed.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: The parent will then observe the young and determine which ones look most like them.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 43:45SPEAKER_05: The others that are not chosen are promptly, along with the womb, eaten by the beholder.
- 43:51SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: The remaining few are then forced out of the lair within like the hour to fend for themselves.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Jesus.
- 44:01SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: So not only beholders are also cannibals.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 44:05SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm just glad that we got that sorted out.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: Uh they then reach maturity at around two years of age.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 44:14SPEAKER_05: In 3.5, they can live to be up to like around 100, maybe a little older.
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: But the ones that do live to be 100, they begin to lose their power of their eye stalks.
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: And the eye stalks will kind of start to wither away.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: They get glaucoma, you know.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:31SPEAKER_03: Probably.
- 44:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: I just want you to know you've also deeply upset Prince.
- 44:35SPEAKER_03: I have.
- 44:35SPEAKER_03: He just told me.
- 44:36SPEAKER_03: He's like grossed out right now.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: He's yelling.
- 44:38SPEAKER_05: And I decided to skip the whole like digestion digestion.
- 44:43SPEAKER_05: Digestion.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: Digestion area that this book had about like what exactly goes on when they eat and everything because it was just too much information.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: I appreciate that.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: See, I wish you had, because that reminds me of an experience that I had when I was in veterinary school learning about cows.
- 45:03SPEAKER_03: So I kind of, you know, I w I went back to that place and now I'm thinking I'm gonna be stuck there for a few hours.
- 45:10SPEAKER_05: Probably.
- 45:11SPEAKER_05: So I'll I'll leave that.
- 45:14SPEAKER_05: We'll skip out of that one and let's uh let's head to fifth edition.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: Um wait, what no?
- 45:20SPEAKER_02: What?
- 45:21SPEAKER_05: You're kind of that's the next logical step, right?
- 45:24SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no.
- 45:25SPEAKER_03: You're missing something.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: You're missing something.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: I don't know what it is, but I feel like you're missing something.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: Starts with an F.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: Fuck.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: No.
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: No, we already talked about that.
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: Um fire?
- 45:35SPEAKER_05: I don't have any fire here.
- 45:37SPEAKER_05: I like fire.
- 45:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, um you know what it is.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: You guys are gonna make me do it, aren't you?
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: Alright.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: We're going to fourth edition.
- 45:45SPEAKER_03: I feel like after the the me getting big mad in the big mad in the Draco Lich episode, I feel like we need to be a little kinder?
- 45:56SPEAKER_03: A little kinder.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: We're not gonna be, are we?
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: No.
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: So maybe someday.
- 46:02SPEAKER_03: I apolog I apologize for getting as big mad as I did, by the way.
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: I've I've cleared my head, but here we are.
- 46:09SPEAKER_05: So So, and it's not quite as bad as what we ran into with yours, but they still kind of fucked it up.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 46:18SPEAKER_03: Are they four feet again?
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: Did they shrink?
- 46:20SPEAKER_03: Uh well, possibly.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: So they really I'm okay with that.
- 46:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're they were getting a little too big.
- 46:27SPEAKER_05: They really don't give like a lot of lore behind beholders until they released Monster Manual 3 for fourth edition.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: Damn.
- 46:36SPEAKER_05: In which they say that the beholders do not belong to any plane, but instead they come from the far realms.
- 46:44SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 46:44SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, that's what that's the kind of lore that I'm used to in regards to the Volholders.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what I had been thinking of when I mentioned Aboleths last time.
- 46:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so that one I was just kind of like, okay, that's fine.
- 46:55SPEAKER_05: They do have many different like variants.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: Like they have variants on pseudo Draco Witches.
- 47:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 47:04SPEAKER_05: Again, just too much for me to really cover here.
- 47:08SPEAKER_05: But um they do appear in Monster Manual three.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: One, two, and three.
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: Three was three was just where they got their.
- 47:17SPEAKER_05: Three was just where they kind of expanded a little bit more on it.
- 47:21SPEAKER_05: Um they come in two different forms and the like their, I guess, original beholder forms for fourth edition.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so.
- 47:33SPEAKER_05: Um, but neither of them are the fucking normal beholder.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: You do you have the prep beholder now?
- 47:42SPEAKER_03: Maybe the jock.
- 47:43SPEAKER_05: They are the beholder eye of flame and the beholder eye tyrant, which I know sounds like that's the normal beholder, but it's not from what we've learned previously.
- 47:56SPEAKER_05: It's just not.
- 47:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: Are you gonna go into why Yeah?
- 48:02SPEAKER_02: I can go.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: Deep breaths.
- 48:06SPEAKER_03: Nope, it's fine.
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: Wusaw.
- 48:08SPEAKER_05: Uh going into the Eye of the Flame.
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry, the Eye of Flame, not Eye of the Flame, Eye of Flame.
- 48:15SPEAKER_05: They have a passive called Eyes of the Beholder.
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: Um, the Eye Turn also has this same passive.
- 48:23SPEAKER_05: This is a five-foot aura that at the start of an enemy's turn, if they're within the aura and in line of sight of the beholder, which is everywhere.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 48:37SPEAKER_05: The Eye of Flames use a random eye power on that creature.
- 48:41SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 48:42SPEAKER_05: So they basically just get a random eye shot every fucking turn.
- 48:48SPEAKER_05: And it's really every enemy's turn.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: And it's really convenient that it's always the death ray.
- 48:54SPEAKER_03: Your DM's definitely not doing something silly behind there.
- 48:57SPEAKER_05: They do actually specify that you're supposed to roll for that one randomly.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: That's her joke.
- 49:02SPEAKER_05: That's my joke.
- 49:03SPEAKER_05: So I say basically they have to be within five feet.
- 49:07SPEAKER_05: So any melee are just gonna get fucked.
- 49:11SPEAKER_05: Every turn, they're gonna get hit with something.
- 49:14SPEAKER_05: But does it still have the possibility of getting hit with something?
- 49:16SPEAKER_02: Does it still have an anti-magical field?
- 49:18unknown: Nope.
- 49:19SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 49:20SPEAKER_02: Well, because I was gonna say, if that were the case, um, and which I know that's a whole other thing, and I'm sure you're gonna rant about that, but I was gonna say, if it has that and an anti-magical field, it's basically unbeatable.
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, you have arrows and shit, but it would need to roll really, really poorly.
- 49:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: Spell attacks and shit, or you would need to roll really, really poorly on your saving throws if available.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: Or you would need to roll really well on your saving throws for it to not just completely body you.
- 49:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 49:49SPEAKER_05: So the central eye, it's no longer the anti-magic cone, and it's no longer like a constant effect.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: It is just an at-will power.
- 49:59SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: That causes the target to gain a vulnerable 10 to fire damage, and then any attack that deals fire damage to that target also deals an ongoing five fire damage.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Okay, I will say, I don't hate the idea of it being an at-will.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: I I kind of I don't I don't hate that.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: Like I could, I could understand how that could be maybe something that would be helpful balancing.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: So then it could be, even though it's at will, maybe it's like the beholder can't use the anti-magic field at the same time as a certain number of its other eye abilities or something like that.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: I could see that being a balancing thing.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: But it's not even anti-magic now.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: So that's where I have a problem.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: I have many problems, but that's neither here nor there.
- 50:46SPEAKER_05: See, and the other problem that I have is they can use up to two of their eye powers per round, which they have fire ray, telekinesis ray, and fear ray.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 50:57SPEAKER_05: So they can use up to two of those each round.
- 51:00SPEAKER_03: They only have three?
- 51:01SPEAKER_05: They only have three.
- 51:02SPEAKER_03: Oh boy.
- 51:04SPEAKER_05: But the thing is, at least one of them has to be a fire ray.
- 51:09SPEAKER_05: So this at willpower that causes them to gain vulnerability to fire damage and then causes fire damage dealt to them to deal five ongoing fire damage, are going to always be hit with this fire raid that it has to use every round.
- 51:27SPEAKER_02: I I just once again with fourth edition, I just have a hard time wrapping my mind around like the mechanics of like like mechanically why.
- 51:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:38SPEAKER_05: Which there might be something that we're missing in all honesty, as far as the different like actions and mechanics, because I know fourth edition mechanics are a little weird.
- 51:45SPEAKER_05: It just doesn't make sense.
- 51:47SPEAKER_03: And again, never played it, but and I don't like it.
- 51:51SPEAKER_05: So let's move to the eye tyrant.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: Which, again, has the same Eye of the Beholders passive ability that the Eye of the Flame did.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 52:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 52:02SPEAKER_05: The whole aura random eye power thing thing.
- 52:06SPEAKER_05: Fuck you.
- 52:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 52:08SPEAKER_05: Um, the central eye doesn't have the anti-magic cone either.
- 52:12SPEAKER_05: Oh boy.
- 52:12SPEAKER_05: You could at least stick that on the standard beholder.
- 52:15SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 52:16SPEAKER_03: Because like if you want to make a fire elemental beholder, like whatever, cool, fine.
- 52:20SPEAKER_03: Give it you know.
- 52:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 52:22SPEAKER_05: They don't stick with anything fucking normal in this.
- 52:25SPEAKER_02: Fourth edition was an experiment.
- 52:28SPEAKER_05: Ugh.
- 52:28SPEAKER_05: It was.
- 52:30SPEAKER_05: But instead.
- 52:31SPEAKER_03: Experiment with no control groups.
- 52:34SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 52:35SPEAKER_05: Or if it had a controlled group, they just ignored them.
- 52:37SPEAKER_03: They didn't include them in their results.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: They they created a control group and then forgot about it.
- 52:44SPEAKER_05: Anyway.
- 52:45SPEAKER_05: So instead, the central eye dazes the target until the end of the beholder's next turn.
- 52:52SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
- 52:53SPEAKER_05: Which is again an at-will power that it can use.
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: A lot.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: Remember what I said earlier about at-will and balancing?
- 53:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it can now daze the target.
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: What is balance?
- 53:08SPEAKER_05: Um, they are back to having the what is that, 10 eye powers?
- 53:14SPEAKER_05: Eye rays.
- 53:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: Because they got their big eye and then they got 10 little ones on the top of the eye.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:19SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 53:19SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 53:20SPEAKER_05: And they can also use two different eye ray powers each round.
- 53:27SPEAKER_05: And this is the same for the Eye of Flame as well.
- 53:30SPEAKER_05: They have to target a different creature.
- 53:33SPEAKER_05: So there's a little bit of a like, you know, I don't want to say balance, I guess leeway there.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:40SPEAKER_05: Like you can't use the same eye, or you can't use two different eye ray powers on the same target in the same round.
- 53:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you you can only say like normal fuck you, not super fuck you.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 53:52SPEAKER_05: And they have the searing ray, withering ray, sleep ray, telekinesis, hold, confusion, fear, petrifying, death, and disintegrate.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: So the the classics, more or less.
- 54:06SPEAKER_05: More or less.
- 54:06SPEAKER_05: I think the withering ray is a little bit different because they don't that would that would have been in place of the flesh to stone ray.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: But a lot of the classics are there.
- 54:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, a lot of the classics are there.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: And that's kind of really all I have time to cover for fourth edition.
- 54:23SPEAKER_05: Like I said, there are a lot of variants, but the eye tiron is as close to.
- 54:27SPEAKER_03: I gotta ask, is the fire beholder on fire?
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: Okay, I just wanted to know if that's what we were dealing with here.
- 54:35SPEAKER_03: Or is it just like orange?
- 54:36SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 54:37SPEAKER_05: It might just be orange.
- 54:38unknown: Oh gosh.
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: Actually, now that I'm looking at it.
- 54:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I don't actually think it's even on fire.
- 54:45SPEAKER_05: I think it's just orange.
- 54:47SPEAKER_03: So I guess the eye tyrant, despite not having the anti-magic ray, which we you know, like I like Taylor said, I think.
- 54:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I feel like that's very much like you the you very much like you think of it when you think of a beholder.
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: And in lore.
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, you you finished your thing, but I I want to add something real quick.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's really all I had.
- 55:07SPEAKER_03: It's just that it feels like something that you really do think about when you think of a beholder.
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and in lore, it's like so like even in the lore, the beholders are against the idea of losing that, which is why they don't all just gouge out their eyes and become mages.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: Like that that was mentioned as a thing that was very was very the beholders would be against.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but they changed it completely, took it away, doesn't exist.
- 55:38SPEAKER_03: I gotta say, these changes have me feeling pretty irate.
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: Get it?
- 55:45SPEAKER_03: Because it's I and I was sitting on that one for a couple minutes.
- 55:50SPEAKER_05: Uh no, we get it.
- 55:52SPEAKER_05: And I'll have to give you a fair one on that one.
- 55:55SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 55:56SPEAKER_03: Props where they're due.
- 55:57SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: Alright.
- 55:59SPEAKER_03: Worked very hard on it.
- 56:00SPEAKER_05: Am I allowed to go to fifth edition now?
- 56:02SPEAKER_02: You are allowed to go to fifth edition now.
- 56:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, good.
- 56:04SPEAKER_05: I tried to say that.
- 56:04SPEAKER_03: Is that really it?
- 56:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's that's it.
- 56:07SPEAKER_05: Like I said, they don't give a lot of lore to beholders in fourth edition.
- 56:11SPEAKER_03: They didn't make five other dumb variations.
- 56:13SPEAKER_05: Oh no, there are a lot of other dumb variations.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: Variants.
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: I just do not have the time to cover it and also go on tangents about them.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: So peruse the dumb variations at your own leisure.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: Okay, and they never mind.
- 56:30SPEAKER_05: I believe one of the variants was actually a zombie beholder, so if you're interested in that, go for it.
- 56:36SPEAKER_05: A zombie.
- 56:37SPEAKER_02: I just threw my pen, by the way.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: I was just playing with my little pen and I threw it down.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: She threw it on the ground.
- 56:45SPEAKER_05: Fifth edition.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: Fifth edition.
- 56:48SPEAKER_05: Uh starting with the entry from the monster manual, they're still relatively, you know, the same size.
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: That's another thing.
- 56:55SPEAKER_05: It didn't mention at all what the beholder's like average size was in fourth edition.
- 57:01SPEAKER_03: Like they obviously have their size category in the stat block, but not like they didn't say they're like six, however many feet in diet.
- 57:09SPEAKER_03: Stupid.
- 57:09SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 57:10SPEAKER_03: I'm mad.
- 57:12SPEAKER_03: No, we're in fifth edition now.
- 57:13SPEAKER_03: We don't have to be mad.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: Or maybe, maybe we do.
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: We do not.
- 57:17SPEAKER_05: It's all relatively simple and back to what it's supposed to be.
- 57:22SPEAKER_02: Back to the basics.
- 57:23SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 57:23SPEAKER_05: They have the anti-magic cone from the central eye now.
- 57:27SPEAKER_05: Uh they can shoot three I-rays per round.
- 57:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, choosing one, two, three creatures.
- 57:33SPEAKER_05: So all of the I rays can in fact hit one creature if the beholder feels threatened enough by like one.
- 57:39SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 57:40SPEAKER_05: And uh the range is 120 feet.
- 57:43SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 57:44SPEAKER_03: For everything.
- 57:45SPEAKER_05: Uh yes.
- 57:45SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 57:46SPEAKER_05: They have charm, paralyzing fear, paralyzing, comma, fear.
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: I was like, wait.
- 57:54SPEAKER_05: Charm, paralyzing fear, slowing, innervation, telekinetic, sleep, petrification, and disintegrate.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:05SPEAKER_05: Wait.
- 58:05SPEAKER_05: And death.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: Okay, I was like, wait, this I was counting on my fingers, I was like, wait, that's only nine.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: We're missing one.
- 58:11SPEAKER_05: And death.
- 58:12SPEAKER_05: Where to go?
- 58:13SPEAKER_05: Yep, they have all those lovely rays as well.
- 58:16SPEAKER_05: Again, kind of back to the same thing.
- 58:18SPEAKER_05: Um, no more flesh to stone, but paralyzing is also roughly about the same.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the effect is the same.
- 58:26SPEAKER_05: Um, they do have their legendary actions, as was introduced with 5th edition for most legendary monsters, or all legendary monsters, actually.
- 58:33SPEAKER_05: All the big ones.
- 58:35SPEAKER_05: Um, which in their case, their legendary actions are just that they can cast a random I-Ray.
- 58:41SPEAKER_05: But yeah, their legendary actions, they don't have a whole like long list of them.
- 58:45SPEAKER_05: Three legendary actions for the encounter.
- 58:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 58:49SPEAKER_05: And they can just shoot a random I-Ray.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 58:52SPEAKER_05: Which, fair enough.
- 58:53SPEAKER_03: Do they even have like legendary resistance or anything?
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: Uh yes.
- 58:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: They do still have that.
- 58:58SPEAKER_03: The normal thing.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: Pretty much if you have legendary actions, you have legendary resistance.
- 59:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 59:03SPEAKER_05: And they have layer actions.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: Yay.
- 59:06SPEAKER_05: Which are pretty cool and interesting for the beholders.
- 59:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 59:10SPEAKER_05: Uh they have three of them.
- 59:11SPEAKER_05: One of them is they can create a 50-foot square area on the ground within 120 feet of it that becomes slimy, which the area becomes difficult terrain until initiative count 20 on the next round.
- 59:27SPEAKER_05: So for a round it becomes difficult terrain.
- 59:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 59:31SPEAKER_05: Uh they can make it to where the walls within 120 feet of the beholder sprout these grasping appendages.
- 59:38SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 59:38SPEAKER_05: Don't like that.
- 59:39SPEAKER_05: Me either.
- 59:40SPEAKER_05: Uh this also lasts until initiative count on the round after next.
- 59:46SPEAKER_05: So this one does last a little bit longer.
- 59:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:49SPEAKER_05: Each creature of the beholder's choice that starts its turn within 10 feet of the wall must succeed on a dexterity saving throw or be grappled.
- 59:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 59:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_02: Are they just hands?
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_05: It just says grasping appendages.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_05: So I'm assuming it could be hands or maybe tentacles of some sort.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: Because for some reason the idea of hands is very upsetting.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_03: Like that one part in like labyrinth.
- 1:00:15unknown: Yeah.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: But also, like, you know, tentacles work too, I guess.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_05: And then you have an eye opens on a solid surface within 60 feet of the beholder.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_05: One random eye ray of the beholder shoots from the eye at a target of the beholder's choice that it can see, and then it disappears.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_03: That's kind of dope.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_05: So, you know.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_03: Just get a death race straight to the nard.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_05: They also have regional effects.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, these are effects that are caused when the creature moves into like the area and creates its layer.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Okay, I was like, regional effects.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_05: Like, wait.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_03: Is this an Alolan beholder?
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_05: And these effects are harmless, just weird.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_05: It's kind of a way to like allow the players to, if they know anything about it, be like, okay, something is very strange because it kind of like warps time and like warps reality around this area.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_03: Okay, so first of all, you just described most of my hobbies.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_03: Harmless but weird.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_03: And also, that's like fucked up kind of.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: A little bit.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: Like it warps time.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_03: What?
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's kind of strange.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_03: That's like Blair Witch up in this.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_05: One of the examples it gives is that a creature within one mile of the layer sometimes feels like they're being watched when they're not.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_05: Uh when the beholders sleep, minor warps in reality can occur within one mile of the layer.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_05: And these like minor warps will vanish within 24 hours.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_05: But it can be anything from like marks on a cave wall could appear suddenly, or like even marks on like a wall of a town.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_05: A trinket could just randomly appear out of nowhere.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_05: Uh slime could coat a random statue.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: I I I I don't I actually hate that.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: So what you're saying is that the Blair Witch was a beholder.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_05: The Blair Witch was a beholder.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_03: Also, I would watch that movie, except I wouldn't, because it would scare me too much.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_03: But also, like DD flavored Blair Witch project.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_03: Go.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_05: Woo! One of the last things I'm gonna cover is from Volo's Guide of Monsters.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_02: Yay!
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_05: Uh they do go into a little bit more of their lore and everything.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_05: And running out of time, which I kind of figured I would getting close to this.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_05: So I only picked like this kind of interesting bit here.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_03: Prince is so excited for this.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_05: Um, their mind is so like versatile and powerful.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_05: That they can envision literally like any possibility to a certain situation or scenario.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_05: Kind of like a chess master, like thinking ahead several moves, the beholder would be able to think ahead to the end of the game.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_03: Except that would make you really bad at chess, because that's what I try to do, and I'm really bad at chess.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_05: Same.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_05: Um they do well, I guess they volo has a question mark.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_02: Question mark.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_05: Has a interpretation of how these things reproduce.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_05: But it's not anything like it was before.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_03: It's not explained.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_05: He in fact barely like says that this can barely be considered their reproduction.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_05: They just don't have any other explanation.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_05: Um, their minds remain semi-conscious, even like as they dream.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_05: As a result, if the beholder dreams about itself or possibly even another beholder, on rare occasions that dream can bend and shift reality and warp and take a physical form in real like reality and become another beholder.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_03: It's like Athena.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_03: Dang.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_03: That is significantly cleaner.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: And cool.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: And a lot of and like very clean compared to what we talked about earlier.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, earlier we got down in the nitty-gritty.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_05: So that's kind of how they think beholders reproduce for the most part, is just on these rare occasions, they can just manifest from dreams of a beholder.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_03: Immaculate conception, if you will.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_02: Kinda.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_02: I just fuck you and your puns.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: I wasn't even trying for that one, actually.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_02: It just kind of happened.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it just happened.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_02: Congratulations.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_03: Thanks.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_03: Congratulations.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_03: You woke up from your sleep and you had a baby.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_03: Can you imagine that?
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: Just like I mean, there have been like women who like fell into comas and then woke up and had a baby.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, but like like regular kind of like you go to bed and then you wake up eight hours later and you just have a fucking baby there.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_03: Could you imagine?
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_03: No, I don't want to.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_03: I don't want to either.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_05: It does also specify that because of beholders' xenophobia and like higher speaking of themselves, very high opinions of themselves.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_05: When this happens, they usually just fight to the death.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_05: Like immediately.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_05: But sometimes they will just escape or not worry about it.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_05: Especially if that beholder happens to be.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_05: Like the same look as the one that dreamed it into existence.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_05: In that case, it's not an inferior beholder, it's just another.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_05: It's a true form beholder.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_04: Hmm.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_04: Hmm.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_05: And then in this, they can be up to six feet in diameter.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_05: I think there was a graph or a list that said like four to like six feet.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_05: If a DM is creating one, they can roll for the size and whatnot.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_05: Better size.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so they shrink back down a little bit and are, I mean, still big, but they're condensed.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_03: It's like upgrade, upgrade, upgrade, go back.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_05: They're like, nope, too much.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_02: It's like the the that year that everyone kept trying to make bigger phones for some reason.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_03: They were just getting bigger and bigger and bigger.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_02: And then we were back to our normal scenes.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_03: And then it's like, wait, maybe that was too much.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_05: Then they were like, okay, we made a mistake.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_05: Sorry guys.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_05: This is excessive.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_05: But uh as far as Beholders Part 2, that is all I have.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_02: And it's quite a bit of information, yet again, and I am still just like in awe.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm still just thinking about that wet sack of babies.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_02: I would like to not.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_03: I got stuck there somehow.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm just still thinking about how nasty fucked outs it is.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_05: And again, there's still a lot of information that I didn't cover.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_05: There's all the variants and stuff.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_05: So if again anyone has any questions that I didn't happen to cover in this one, by all means, tell us via Twitter, email, what have you.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_05: And I'll look into it and probably do another episode over just answering those specific questions.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_05: Because I have actually loved looking up these beholders.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_05: It has been crazy and awesome at the same time.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_03: I have a question you might not be able to answer.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_03: I would like to ask that question too.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_03: Why did somebody like no hate?
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_03: Because this is the kind of shit I live for.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like you why did they why did somebody feel the need to go into such detail about their bodily functions and their reproduction?
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_02: Like Lynn, I literally just bought you, or like, okay, for Christmas, I got Lewin and a uh fucking unofficial like Pokemon anatomy book.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_02: So like Lewin, you're exempt.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_02: You cannot comment further.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_03: And then at one point I did was definitely open on one of the pages and said, ha ha, it says anus.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_03: So like it was.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_02: Lewin, the question of why is because people like you exist.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_02: That that's actually fair.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: I really should have reflected on that before I asked.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_02: And I I there is no hate, there's just a lot of intensity because I love you and I love the way you are.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_03: Whoa.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: That sounded more emotional than I intended it to be, but that's because my well.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_03: Still, this was very enlightening.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_03: There were some things that maybe I didn't actually want to know.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_03: But but now I know though.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_05: But you found out anyway.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_03: And my life may not be better for having found out, but I found out, so whatever.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_03: It's certainly still something alive.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_03: It is something.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_03: Well, I hope you all found this as enlightening as I did.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_05: Or possibly disturbing, I guess.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_05: Or both.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_05: Or both.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_02: Thank you guys so much for listening.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, don't forget to follow us on Twitter, on Instagram, wherever you so desire to follow us and receive updates and little snippets of, you know, whatever this is.

- 1:10:21SPEAKER_02: Any question honestly, we've been tossing around the idea of doing like a little questions and looking up the answers thing for a while.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_02: So if you have any questions about like any of the lore that you're just like, yeah, I don't really want to look it up myself and pour through the all of the manuals and stuff.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_02: Can you do it for me?
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_02: Send it to us.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_05: Yes, we can in fact do it for you because that is what we're here for.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_03: So with that, I think that'll be it.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_03: I think Taylor and I need to go recover.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm good.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I figured.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I no, actually, I think I'm okay, but I I need to go lay down.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's all of the coughs are up, perhaps.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_03: But with that, I think we'll catch you next week here on Dungeon Pedia.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_05: It's like my piece.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_02: Why does it throw up its egg zac?
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_05: You mean it's womb?
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_02: It's womb.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_02: Shut up, it's an egg sac.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_02: No, it's not.
