- 1:20So next time, you're in Blacksburg head on down to 301
- 1:24South Main Street and let them know Curtis.
- 1:26And Brian, since you body, we are back after a week off.
- 1:30How you feeling tonight, man, I'm feeling great man, but I am
- 1:33feeling we have so much to unload, and I just look just the
- 1:38last. What?
- 1:4048, 50, 50 hours, man. It's been only it.
- 1:45It's been a frenzy, it's been a frenzy.
- 1:47If we were, we were putting this together.
- 1:49This episode, we started putting this together in the labs where
- 1:51you re like we got enough to get this episode, but it might not
- 1:54be a long one than everything happened as well.
- 1:57Okay, we gotta we gotta we have extra, you know 20 30 minutes.
- 2:00We can we can pad on here and talk about.
- 2:02So let's hope it's an extra 20 to 30 and not an extra like our
- 2:06because that could be continually would happens
- 2:08tonight. I mean, but hey, it's all the
- 2:12times. That's how it goes man, and it's
- 2:14all good time. That's one of the big things
- 2:16about it. This is you know, a lot of good
- 2:18stuff in this episode, a lot of good good stuff and you know
- 2:22where we decided to kick it off the night, was the stuff that
- 2:24happened on Sunday and that is all the commitments that came
- 2:28down after a big OV weekend up in Blacksburg and where the
- 2:33Hokies got three commitments, to the class of 2023.
- 2:38And with that subsequent commitment, Brian, you know?
- 2:42We we looked and hovering about 40 Like we still said 35, but we
- 2:47knew there were some guys, we could potentially land and I
- 2:50told you I looked after the three guys committed.
- 2:53We were at 34, overall 33 composite in with those three
- 2:58commitments, which we're going to discuss here in a minute.
- 3:00We're up to 30 overall with the 24/7 and 33 composite.
- 3:03So a massive jump for the Hokies in the rankings and something
- 3:09that you. You said a year ago, 30 to 35
- 3:13next year's where I want us to be slightly above where we
- 3:16finished last class often. It seems like we're right on
- 3:19that track for you. Yeah, I mean, it looks like
- 3:21that's where we're trending right now, you know, a big
- 3:25close, maybe another one or two to kind of close that out.
- 3:28Would be nice for sure. It will be but, you know, we're
- 3:32almost at a full boat at this point.
- 3:35Yes. We are, you know, I think we're
- 3:38probably keeping one spot open. See what happens with the
- 3:43certain Richmond Richmond earned linebacker that will remain
- 3:48remain nameless for the time being.
- 3:52He doesn't need to rename nameless.
- 3:53I mean, you know, so but other than him and maybe maybe one
- 4:00other, you know, that's out there that we either we've been
- 4:03following lightly or heavily the last six to eight months.
- 4:09You know, this is kind of Kind of what we're working with here.
- 4:14But I mean, three big ones over the weekend, you know?
- 4:19We heard about some of the, we had a bunch back on bunch of
- 4:24commits that were back on campus this weekend.
- 4:27Yes. They were had a good handful
- 4:29that we were hoping to kind of either Flip or close on this
- 4:32weekend and we had a pretty good percentage with that pretty good
- 4:36percentage for this class and the portal, which we're going to
- 4:38just do the portal by itself because it has its own Beach
- 4:40right now. But let's Start frying with the
- 4:43sort of lead dog that started the trend on Sunday night.
- 4:47And you know, it's the borderline for Star wide
- 4:52receiver, Aiden, green out of Powell Tennessee and Powell high
- 4:57school you know six foot and a half hundred seventy pounds.
- 5:02Held offers from Cincinnati. You know, Arkansas, a lot of
- 5:07different places for this kid and, you know, it was one of
- 5:13those. They felt like if they could get
- 5:14on campus, once he decommitted from Cincinnati.
- 5:17Yeah, I think they knew they could get him.
- 5:20And next thing, you know why live happens, you know, he's in
- 5:25the top five fifty four, the country top 80 receiver, so
- 5:28you're getting what's viewed as a good player.
- 5:32Did you have a chance to look at highlight reels?
- 5:35Yeah. I mean I think this is a guy
- 5:37that could potentially come in and be a potential immediate
- 5:42impact player. I don't know if he's going to
- 5:44necessarily be kind of in that, three or four man rotation, but
- 5:49I think he could definitely be somebody that you're going to
- 5:52see out there in year. One kind of doing some things
- 5:56for us. Really good athlete.
- 5:59I like his hands moves in and out of his brakes.
- 6:03Well, so I think he's going to be a big addition for this team,
- 6:08whether he has immediate impact in 23 or whether we're waiting
- 6:12for 424. Before we really see what he can
- 6:15really do. That's going to be the big
- 6:17question but very solid pick up ya.
- 6:20Big question about a lot of these guys and I think this is
- 6:22something we'll start finding out the next few weeks is who's
- 6:24coming in early? Obviously any time, I mean
- 6:28early, you know that immediately, you know, helps
- 6:31them out and you know with with green be and why don't there's a
- 6:35Mission of need, we know that. So if he's able to come in and
- 6:37pick up the Playbook quick potentially there with him,
- 6:41Little underweight, you know, I'm hoping he's one of the guys
- 6:45that chooses to enroll early just to get quickly into a
- 6:48weight program that maybe by the end of next summer, he's put on
- 6:51ten to Fifteen of good weight especially at a need position.
- 6:56If we're talking about guys that we want to get in early, any
- 7:00wide receiver, offensive, lineman or DNA that we can get
- 7:03in. Early.
- 7:06Yep all the better. Yep, and just an FYI.
- 7:10Primary recruiter man making some hey lately fontelle Minds.
- 7:16You know does work on start to put up walls around the 804 man,
- 7:20he is but walls. Well let's talk about the guy
- 7:23who essentially pulled out of the 80 for and that was Jeremiah
- 7:28Coney over at Hermitage I mean a you know myth 3 star guy But,
- 7:36you know, six foot and a half hundred ninety four pounds.
- 7:39Now, that way, that running back dad makes him a little bit,
- 7:42potentially more ready, out of the gate?
- 7:45We'll see what you think with the film.
- 7:47You know, was initially committed to Appalachian State
- 7:50and it's one of those. There's there are just certain
- 7:54G5 schools in certain positions if they recruit.
- 7:59You feel like it's something for ab State and how their run game
- 8:03has been really the last decade. Plus if you flip a running back
- 8:07from them you feel like you've done something because you know
- 8:10they have a reputation. What's the tape saying?
- 8:13So far on on him this is a guy that you know, could push for
- 8:20some playing time early just because you know we do kind of
- 8:24have a void in Kind of a bigger body running back.
- 8:31Now, you know, we got we got Thomas coming back, he's going
- 8:35to be the all-purpose, hopefully can stay healthy Kings, very
- 8:37good, change of pace back. We're looking for that kind of
- 8:41big body running back that has some good Vision between the
- 8:45tackles. Do we end up addressing that in
- 8:47the portal? Or are we going to kind of put
- 8:49that on a true freshman that's coming in for us in Jeremiah?
- 8:54Coney, because he's kind of in that big body area, I think, you
- 8:57know, So, we'll see if he can kind of get closer to that 200
- 9:02range if he comes in early and on campus and has offseason with
- 9:07us, but there's some potential there as well.
- 9:10So I like his game, like I said, you know, big body, good Vision
- 9:17breaks tackles well. So I think he's got some, some
- 9:20potential to be there. But I mean, another solid pick
- 9:22up fontelle mines, doing his thing in the 80, for which we
- 9:26love to see. Absolutely.
- 9:28Now do you see someone like him? Do you think definitely running
- 9:31back? Know we played some linebacker
- 9:33in high school but as he definitely a running back in
- 9:36your eyes. Yeah I think he's definitely a
- 9:38running back. Just just his skill set.
- 9:41Everything overall he's definitely a running back.
- 9:43I think he's got potential where he can play on the other side
- 9:46but I wouldn't unless it just doesn't work at running back
- 9:51then then I wouldn't I wouldn't entertain that.
- 9:54Yeah. And to that point, I'm looking
- 9:56here scrolling up and down. Stu Holt was his secondary so
- 9:59that even more kind of solidifies likely going to be in
- 10:02the running back and stay in the running back room once he gets
- 10:07to Blacksburg. All right, so the last one was,
- 10:12I think the most surprising, I think with we heard greens going
- 10:16to get on campus and Kony was taking that trip after they both
- 10:20decommitted. That was one of those.
- 10:21Okay, if we get them there, we likely are going to flip.
- 10:28The other one came out of nowhere because it was such a
- 10:30late addition that he was making the visit and that is the
- 10:35quarterback out of Springfield Central and Springfield Mass
- 10:39William pop Watson. The third, you know, a composite
- 10:44composite 3 star. 24/7 has a three star quarterback in
- 10:50originally committed to Nebraska and I know I can't remember who
- 10:57made a comment. About it.
- 10:58So about Mark, Whipple more equipped with more powerful,
- 11:01likes him as a quarterback. You have some other stuff there
- 11:04and just overall I mean had interest from programs like
- 11:09Tennessee Oregon, Michigan, Kentucky on and you don't know
- 11:14the level of interest but the reality goes they were
- 11:18interested in and he lands in Nebraska and Nebraska even the
- 11:21last three or four years, losing a bunch of one score gains was
- 11:24still pulling top 15, you know, talent-wise Yes.
- 11:28And even though he's coming from Massachusetts, it's not a big
- 11:32football state. We all know that, you know, but
- 11:36occasionally you can find, you know, Diamonds in the Rough from
- 11:40Massachusetts. And, you know, we Hokies know
- 11:43that very well. But what do you thinking of
- 11:45Imran? Yeah, I like this kid.
- 11:47A lot. Like, looking at his game.
- 11:50He's a true dual thread. He's not just a running
- 11:53quarterback, he's not just a pastor.
- 11:56He's a guy that can kind of Do it all really good footwork,
- 12:02really good. Polished mechanics.
- 12:04As a quarterback for a high school player consistent whether
- 12:10he's throwing on the run or whether he's standing in the
- 12:13pocket. So I mean that's good to see.
- 12:17Not great arm strength, but he can make all the throws.
- 12:23Yeah, I mean, I think he's going to be somebody that could
- 12:26potentially push for a starting role.
- 12:28And again, a couple Seasons right now, when you say polished
- 12:32passer is it does that just mean it's refined when you don't see
- 12:36it. If someone's under his footage
- 12:37still the same mechanism is that with me, whether he's throwing
- 12:42on the run, whether he's standing in the pocket, Diet,
- 12:46whether he's getting pressured, that those mechanics, they say
- 12:50pretty, pretty close to the same, which means that he's
- 12:53going to be delivering a good ball every time.
- 12:58Said, I mean there are occasions where he'll miss but it's
- 13:04consistent. And when you can do something
- 13:06like that consistently, you can kind of work on that the other
- 13:09parts of the that contribute to accuracy as you're kind of
- 13:12building on that. I got you got you.
- 13:15All right? So with that, that takes to
- 13:17class up to 23, total likely, only 22 that will be on full
- 13:23football scholarship. You know, Jimmy Mullen the
- 13:25wrestler, I know there's some stuff.
- 13:28Out there that, you know, it's one way or the other.
- 13:31Sometimes they have to be counted to football if they're
- 13:33playing football. But either way, I think you're
- 13:37right. I think we're just a handful of
- 13:38guys away from finishing off this class.
- 13:43I don't know if it'll come potentially next, Wednesday, or
- 13:46if it's going to be something after the Wednesday day of
- 13:50getting the additional players. And obviously, the big one is
- 13:54sitting down and Verano right now.
- 13:56And that would really be an absolute cherry on top of this
- 14:01second class. And also, the way this class is
- 14:04held together after not the best on-field results.
- 14:08Yeah, I mean, especially, you know, we talked about since the
- 14:12season has ended between the the in-home visits and the stuff
- 14:16that's happened. The last couple weeks on campus.
- 14:20They've really done a good job of kind of keeping everybody
- 14:22together. Keeping everyone on the same
- 14:24page and kind of keeping Body in the boat and committed and ready
- 14:31to roll into the season particularly guys that were
- 14:34getting some some decent push to to do other things.
- 14:39Thinking more of Lance Williams and Dante love it here.
- 14:43Yeah who do did get some some other legitimate power 5 offers
- 14:48kind of down the stretch there now so it'll be interesting.
- 14:52Will be obviously watching that next Wednesday seeing what all
- 14:56happens. But now, let's go to sort of the
- 15:00bigger story now, this time of year, right?
- 15:03Because it's now that college football has changed in the
- 15:06portal. Officially opened.
- 15:08Its the main episode man poorly season, it is the portal open
- 15:12roughly eight days ago after the college football.
- 15:15Playoff was announced and you know, we had DJ Harvey go in
- 15:20before our last episode and since then you know matthäus
- 15:24Carol looking Rudolph does Mamu & Moss.
- 15:29Armani Chapman, Enzo Anthony Keyshawn artist.
- 15:33Jason Brown, Eli atoms and then maybe the one that surprised us
- 15:37all was Caleb Smith other than Caleb Smith Brian, anybody else?
- 15:43Oh, shocker to you on that list or made you go.
- 15:46Hmm, no. I mean the the ones that stand
- 15:50out are probably Carol just because he did get some run kind
- 15:54of the start the season but he had gotten I think kind of
- 15:58pushed a little further down the depth chart than he would have
- 16:00liked as the season went along. I think Rudolph with how the
- 16:05linebacking corps, some of the younger guys in the linebacking
- 16:08corps of come along, You know, it's just only so many mouths to
- 16:15feed, right? It's true.
- 16:17It's only so many mouths to feed.
- 16:19It's only, it's only so much of what you can do in in the whole
- 16:24approach this year. It looked like from Brett
- 16:26practice, he mentioned a few weeks ago, 30 to 35 guys.
- 16:30He had to have conversations with, that's a lot of people on
- 16:32the team, even if you get up to the 120, that's roughly a
- 16:35quarter of your roster and you know, it's Which Way can
- 16:41Conversation to go and then who choose to go in the portal?
- 16:44I know. I don't think we're done seeing
- 16:46guys under the portal yet. I have a feeling if you guys are
- 16:49probably going to enter some time between now and the first
- 16:53of the year 325, they're probably waiting for that that
- 16:58spring money to kick in and then they'll figure that out.
- 17:01What is it? Was we starting to see that.
- 17:04We know we're losing a lot of guys, anyway, just because of
- 17:07the covid years going to be gone.
- 17:08It did not take Take long for this coaching staff to jump
- 17:14right on it and get in there. And the first one is, maybe
- 17:17somebody here that should have been here a long time ago and
- 17:20currently, you know, I'm looking at on three if you guys haven't
- 17:24checked out on three is really dipping hard and do the transfer
- 17:27portal, like they are essentially creating rankings
- 17:31stars and the Hokies quickly, route the gate a guy that should
- 17:36have been here a long time ago. Like I said, the number four
- 17:39ranked portal entry Ali Jennings.
- 17:42Everybody should know that name very well played at Highland
- 17:45Springs went to West Virginia and he played it Odie.
- 17:48You two seasons in the you know, this season, nine games over 950
- 17:54yards, 50 for receptions nine touchdowns almost 18, a
- 17:58reception, and it wasn't just him sitting here.
- 18:04Like all, he just beat up on the little schools.
- 18:07He just beat up on the schools that don't have all the talent.
- 18:11I mean, it was every school. I mean, we saw what he did to us
- 18:15late in that game. He beat Dorian strong on one of
- 18:17those under throwing balls. He put 200 up against TCU, he
- 18:21almost put 100 against UVA. He put 129 on Liberty, the kid
- 18:27bald. And I think later in the year
- 18:29against Georgia, State and Marshall, he did have his to
- 18:31lesser games, but he hasn't played since November.
- 18:34So I had to go look and see if maybe he got a little banged up.
- 18:37But what up? What a land for the first guy.
- 18:41Portal to commit this season Brian an immediate automatic
- 18:44starter at wide receiver. Yeah I mean that's a that's a
- 18:47position upgrade right out the gate and that's that's whether
- 18:52you know, the situation with Kayla Smith ends up with him,
- 18:54coming back to the Hokies next year.
- 18:56Next year. And not, you know, we talked
- 18:59about it when we previewed, ODU, Ali Jennings is a legitimate NFL
- 19:04caliber wide receiver. He's got that type of skill set
- 19:09getting a guy like that at Virginia Tech is huge.
- 19:14It's huge and it's definitely one of those, it's a culture
- 19:18Builder. It's it, get your eyes on your
- 19:20program. It says, hey, this can be a
- 19:24destination for this caliber of player.
- 19:27Yeah and it's great to see it again.
- 19:31We continue to talk about the 8004 and Highland Springs and
- 19:34Hermitage a on and schools like that.
- 19:38I do have to say, I wonder how much of the relationship
- 19:42building that's been happening in that area.
- 19:45Came back and helped by in this, when I mean, I know the fontelle
- 19:48minds connection was bigger, right.
- 19:50He can't find tail recruit him down to ODU, but how big was
- 19:55maybe Lauren Johnson? How big was that coaching?
- 19:57If we're print Prime that entire staff is getting the trust from
- 20:01Highland Springs now, and phone calls were made potentially Ali,
- 20:07I would have seen assume he still speaks to his coaches in
- 20:10high school like most guys do in essence, it's the restoration.
- 20:13We're starting to see the fruits of that labor come through.
- 20:18Yeah I mean it's definitely kind of built like I said building
- 20:22that Foundation that coach prize tried to talk about like this is
- 20:29this is a culture building Type move and hopefully you know this
- 20:35isn't the end of end of the run. We're going to see some more
- 20:39big-time names get Get you put in attached to the Hokies going
- 20:44forward, man. Absolutely.
- 20:47And it didn't take long last night to that to happen to go
- 20:50ahead and get number two from the portal and Chiron, drones a
- 20:546-foot 295 lb. He is a coming in.
- 20:58You'll be a redshirt sophomore next year.
- 21:00So three years of Eligibility left out of Baylor.
- 21:04We finally landed, the 4 Star Quarterback out of Texas for
- 21:09Star Quarterback out of Texas. Wow.
- 21:13Yeah. And so this is this is big for
- 21:16the Hokies because, you know, we talked about quarterback being
- 21:21other than wideout being the position.
- 21:23We had to Target in the portal for especially from a skill
- 21:27position standpoint. At least someone to push Grant
- 21:31Wells, if not an upgraded position.
- 21:34I've looked at this guy's tape, I think he's an upgrade from
- 21:36Grant Wells and in every aspect he's got a live arm.
- 21:42ERM. He's got more athleticism.
- 21:44He is strong as an ox by the squat tape.
- 21:48We see strong as yeah. Yeah, I mean he's put up 585
- 21:52with I wouldn't say he's but he's putting up 585 easier than
- 21:57most people do. And and a lot of people that
- 22:00have, you know, 60 to 80 pounds on him, would put it up.
- 22:05So Really, really strong player. Saw some extended action against
- 22:12West Virginia did did really well other than kind of a late
- 22:16pick when he kind of got in trouble in the backfield.
- 22:20But did really well overall against that defense had some
- 22:24other games where he saw some action this year.
- 22:26So, overall, again, I think it's a significant upgrade from from
- 22:33Grant wells in terms of ceiling if we're talking about Floor.
- 22:37I think the floor is a little higher than what what wells is.
- 22:40Okay. So higher floor and the ceiling
- 22:44is, you know, much higher in terms of what he can do, just
- 22:48because he's got more athleticism and he's stronger
- 22:52and he still got the arm to go with that.
- 22:54Do you? Are you also going with a higher
- 22:56floor? Because of I would say the less
- 22:59baggage and I'm not trying to like completely, not Grant, but
- 23:04we knew Grant had a propensity for turning the ball over. /.
- 23:07This kid, he played in five games, he's taking 20, he's
- 23:12basically through 23 balls, you know, is does that adjust your
- 23:19floor as well? Because with Grant, we talked
- 23:21about, we transfer, if he can clean up the interceptions, it
- 23:26would significant. He keeps the higher production
- 23:28with the passing can be okay. Is that one reason you put that
- 23:33floor a little bit higher because of essentially, the lack
- 23:35of maybe scar Shoo, I'll say it's not just that I'll say it's
- 23:39a couple things and I'll give a shout-out to Chris Coleman on
- 23:42this when we talk about a shifting in flaw and hell man.
- 23:45Oh, man, oh man, Chris calls, the storm earlier earlier today
- 23:51already, but I'll let you go ahead and continue with the Good
- 23:56Year. Yes.
- 23:56So I can Christmas play. When we talk about the shifting
- 24:00in philosophy, what I think we're not going to see next year
- 24:04is as much of a Reliance or over-reliance On the Run game
- 24:10and play action. I think we're not changing
- 24:13schemes, but we're changing philosophy of how that scheme is
- 24:18being executed in the game playing week to week, okay?
- 24:21So you're going to, you're going to see some more run to pass the
- 24:26set up the Run. You're going to see the ball
- 24:29getting out of the hands of the quarterback a little bit
- 24:31quicker. You're going to see more running
- 24:34with the quarterback whether that's Read option things like
- 24:38that, you're going to, you're going to see a little bit more
- 24:40of a mix and match of the philosophies and less just
- 24:45power, Run play action or dumped down to the tight ends.
- 24:49That there's not going to be kind of that.
- 24:51I mean. And that was, you know, that was
- 24:54what we kind of rolled into the season with were like, okay,
- 24:56we're going to run the bowl, we're going to work the short
- 24:58passing game to the tight ends, to try to move the sticks.
- 25:01And we're going to take deep shots down the field to try to
- 25:04get some quick strikes through the air.
- 25:07And it was, it was very it was it was literally Hit or Miss.
- 25:11If we hit a big gain in the Run game, if we were able to hit
- 25:15some of those big game big gains in the passing game, we looked.
- 25:18Alright when those weren't there and they started keying in on
- 25:23the tight ends and we couldn't run between the tackles it
- 25:26looked as ugly as an often says it could.
- 25:29What you're getting with drones is the ability to open that up
- 25:32some more both with his athleticism and with his arm.
- 25:35So it's a lot of What you're saying is with this shift,
- 25:39especially with the running probably more RPO quick passes.
- 25:42Essentially, you're forcing an additional either linebacker.
- 25:45Safety to commit to the inside versus with Grant.
- 25:49Even though we're there were times when they let him run, he
- 25:53did pick up some yards. This is truly that dual threat
- 25:56that a lot of people clamor for a true dual threat and I again
- 26:00you said RPO and that's what it's going to be.
- 26:02We're going to we're going to be putting linebackers and Those
- 26:06kind of spill Area players in a lot more conflict this year with
- 26:12with a player like drones. All right, well, for everybody
- 26:17spring is going to be fun. Yeah, we got a big big draw to
- 26:21the spring game, now, big draw because we got to admit them to
- 26:27Big pieces that are getting added to that offense.
- 26:30Abso-freakin'-lutely, I want to flip next Brian and we kind of
- 26:34already hit this while going through the Old.
- 26:37But kind of the farewell to certain Hokies and, you know, we
- 26:41already talked about, you know, Jason Brown.
- 26:45We talked about our mining Chapman but, you know, Jalen
- 26:48Holston had now Drake due to his head.
- 26:52Now, Jaden blue and it looks like Caleb Smith, he's in the
- 26:56portal, does he come back to us? He go elsewhere, obviously Silas
- 27:01Kinsey and Johnny on the offensive side of the ball
- 27:04garbage and Griffin Dax tomorrow, He Connor free on
- 27:09Marine DJ Harvey, you know, when we look at this that's some
- 27:15production guide. Are you guess it?
- 27:18Will you look up and down there guys who are star most of that
- 27:22production is Smith and then big the big veterans on defense, the
- 27:27big that's on defense along with steady play from Silas and
- 27:31Johnny but as we look at this and you know you say farewell to
- 27:35them I don't think with this list, maybe, with the exception,
- 27:42maybe, with the exception of Garbutt, There's not like a
- 27:46glaring glaring I think we all now.
- 27:49We see Chris Marv and we see you know, Chris Marsh coach the
- 27:53linebackers that you need to have better this year.
- 27:56The safety units got better. We saw the young guys play.
- 28:01We're doing young guys. Played the better.
- 28:03The unit's? God Oh man okay hey you go at
- 28:13your pace man. I mean are we watching the same
- 28:17tape? I mean it's true.
- 28:19The the more they got acclimated and I'm not just saying that the
- 28:23veterans didn't get the job done.
- 28:25A lot of them did they played well but the the more that we
- 28:29got the up-and-coming players involved in the the defense The
- 28:35more consistent that defense looked both, I'd say the
- 28:38linebackers and the safety and cornerbacks in particular I
- 28:43think defensive line, it was more of a mixed bag, right?
- 28:48Just somebody telling you that that Bryant Cobbs is agreeing
- 28:52that this is an accurate statement.
- 28:53Brian. Just so, you know, somebody out
- 28:56there is an agreement with you. Well, wolf.
- 28:58Let's look on the offensive side of the ball and let's look
- 29:01especially at the line. And it seemed like every time
- 29:04Braylon, well, he had his errors, but there were times
- 29:06when it came to running game. He was just monster and people.
- 29:10And we saw Xavier chaplain in that last game and Xavier.
- 29:12Chaplain played one game. So you're talking about, get
- 29:15them acclimated, and I think I mentioned something to you from
- 29:19day is Brent, I decided to build this from the inside out, not
- 29:23the outside in and I don't, and I really think that's why we're
- 29:29seeing what we saw last year because he's essentially, In the
- 29:33culture inside, right? If you creates the culture
- 29:36inside and you build everybody here versus bringing a bunch of
- 29:41people in Well, I think it's I think it's twofold.
- 29:45So I think when we look at it we knew there were holes last year,
- 29:50we fill the holes that had to absolutely had to be filled with
- 29:54what we could fill it with and what the philosophy was at the
- 29:58time. But what I like that I'm seeing
- 30:01from this staff is, you know, you said building from the
- 30:06inside but also the ability to evaluate pivot and put a plan in
- 30:12place and then eat that plan. So we're already seeing it now
- 30:16with, you know, with getting drones in with getting Jennings
- 30:20and we've identified the areas of need.
- 30:24We've identified the missteps and philosophy relative to the
- 30:28talent that we have on the roster right now and where we
- 30:30can address that talent. And we're adjusting and putting
- 30:36a plan in place to execute. Yeah, and so far, we're
- 30:39executing that playing pretty well in terms of the guys that
- 30:42we needed to close. Out for the 23 class, and who we
- 30:45needed to prioritize in the transfer report.
- 30:49All right, well, I'm going to ask this and this is going to go
- 30:51back to the portal peace while we talk about.
- 30:54Obviously, you're losing to good offensive.
- 30:55Lineman we saw Chapman more play you got Clements again, finally,
- 31:02going up versus down. Finally, at the end of the
- 31:05season, he wasn't awful at the end of the season.
- 31:07He was just mid which I mean, if he'd have been made all year
- 31:11shit. Okay, we would have been a
- 31:15little better. But let me ask this because what
- 31:18we haven't seen, and we don't hear much buzz from her.
- 31:21I haven't is we're not hearing a lot of Buzz with the offensive
- 31:24line. The big thing to me is that
- 31:28targeting in the portal with the with the Lyman is a little bit
- 31:30more difficult than some of the other position groups because
- 31:35it's a lot harder to get a good eval of guys that aren't
- 31:39starters on other teams right now.
- 31:44So you're either looking at taking a chance on a guy that is
- 31:49going to be stepping up a level whether it's FCS or G5 or you're
- 31:54taking it even bigger wrist on And a guy at the power 5 level,
- 31:58that's only been a rotational or full-time second-stringer for a
- 32:06P5 program. So I'm thinking there might be
- 32:09something where he's taking a little bit longer to eval, and
- 32:13bring to see offers later now, I hope we don't end up, missing
- 32:15out on cream of the crop guys, because of that.
- 32:20But I get a conservative approach in terms of evaluation
- 32:25because part of the problem. Them that we ran into this
- 32:27year's. We had guys that didn't fit what
- 32:30we really needed to do from a philosophy standpoint.
- 32:35And it took a longer time for that to jail for them to get
- 32:39comfortable with the system and things like that.
- 32:42Alright, alright, so we'll see how that goes over road.
- 32:45We have about trying to do the math here about 37 days until
- 32:51the portal officially closes, which is again.
- 32:54I think I know this Is that one thing you're happy about?
- 32:58It's got an opening date in the closing date.
- 33:01You can't just be committing in the middle of the Year.
- 33:04These are the times. All right, couple other notes
- 33:08concerning football. One other note.
- 33:12I'm glad Mansoor d'Alene got name to a freshman All-American
- 33:16team that kid deserved as a 24/7 freshman All-American team.
- 33:22You know, obviously not a consensus or anything with
- 33:24multiple lines but at least one did recognized his talent.
- 33:28So kudos to him again, makes you feel better about that secondary
- 33:32room as we get into 2023. Another thing to note on because
- 33:39we're going to talk oops here in just a second.
- 33:42What a win? I don't know if you got to see
- 33:44this problem but what a win for the Hokies on the map.
- 33:50The Hokie wrestling team takes out number seven.
- 33:52Missouri at home on Sunday 1715. This was the second time in, as
- 34:02many years, they've upset Missouri.
- 34:03Missouri is a top program in the country especially after coming
- 34:08off that the heartbreaker to Ohio State.
- 34:13This this team's good. That's all you can say they're
- 34:16good and hopefully some you know hopefully national championships
- 34:20come out of it, this year. Yeah.
- 34:23I mean, I think this is another, I mean top to bottom.
- 34:26It might be a better Squad than last year.
- 34:28I think it's a deeper Odd. We'll see if, if it's as
- 34:32top-heavy. I think I think it can be.
- 34:37And, you know, you, you pushed Ohio State to the Limit, you got
- 34:40a big win at Mizzou. So I think that, you know, we're
- 34:44moving in the right direction here, it's going to be
- 34:48interesting because, you know, over the next few weeks, you
- 34:51know, they've got, they got Stanford, the Cornell and in
- 34:56January to me pretty big Cornell, another good wrestling
- 34:58program. And then obviously, we look at
- 35:02early mid January with NC State. You know, essentially the slowly
- 35:06but surely becoming the wrestling rival at Virginia Tech
- 35:12in in the ACC. All right, let's talk some
- 35:15hoops. An expert on, let's flip it over
- 35:17and let's talk about the men's team first.
- 35:20We looked at this stretch of games that they had to go
- 35:23through starting at Minnesota, which we got to talk about, and
- 35:26we said, go 500, great. Go three in one hoorah.
- 35:33But to go for an, do you know beating Minnesota, handedly
- 35:40beating UNC Beating the brakes off of Dayton and then a game.
- 35:45And you got to watch together in the second half on Sunday, be no
- 35:49key State. I mean, let's talk with you and
- 35:51see what a win in general against the Tar Heels.
- 35:56You know, you take a look at that game.
- 35:59The Hokies really dominated till about the 4-minute mark in the
- 36:03second half and North Carolina made their run to get back in
- 36:07it. But, you know, Justin what's in
- 36:10the second half, 21 points, grat gets a double double.
- 36:16You know, what else, did you see from that game?
- 36:18That really impressed you on that Sunday and unfortunately,
- 36:22they keep giving a Sunday games, which is, you know, thank God.
- 36:24We have man caves or we can watch multiple games at once but
- 36:28a number a over when the, when we were wrapping up the game
- 36:32against Okie state, so I know you're great.
- 36:35Your setups, great did. It was, we're watching the NFL
- 36:38games and we're keeping an eye on the Hokies game.
- 36:41So, it was it's That you got to have at least three TVs, guys.
- 36:45It's just a rule. Yeah, so I mean, look at the
- 36:49UNC. I mean I know they were short of
- 36:51Armando be cut so you know, they were one down but I think we did
- 36:55a good job of taking advantage of that and you know muds
- 37:00beating them up in the boards that was huge.
- 37:06And just overall keeping them in check and not really.
- 37:11Letting the moment get too big when they started that run.
- 37:16They said, okay, the runs here, whether it and we've seen that a
- 37:20lot from this team this year. They've given up some leads but
- 37:25they generally weathered the storm and then been able to kind
- 37:29of close things out. And as they did here, they
- 37:32weathered that lead, you know. On a Couture, liked it up from
- 37:37three. We whack keep talking about that
- 37:3947. We were 37 against Carolina, a
- 37:43couple more percentage points lower and maybe it's a different
- 37:45outcome of. Maybe it's a lot tighter, but
- 37:49you know, I think what's happening is we know we need a
- 37:53second ball handler because that's normally.
- 37:56Like, that's only when it starts happening.
- 37:58Right, getting a little sloppy with the ball.
- 38:01May be a turnover, may be forcing a bad shot because of
- 38:03not moving the ball correctly. Turnover and a little bit of
- 38:07some transition. And, and perimeter defense,
- 38:11which I mean is also kind of going back into, all right, is
- 38:15our is our primary ball handler in our secondary ball, hindered
- 38:18getting gassed as we get later in these games.
- 38:23Yeah. That'd be, that's the answer.
- 38:24Yes. So Rodney rice when he's ready
- 38:28to go. That's the big one that's by the
- 38:34New Year. Hopefully.
- 38:35By the time we're releasing them up in the New Year.
- 38:38Absolutely. So 80 72 Victory there.
- 38:41The dating game, I did not watch a minute of this game, I don't
- 38:45even listen to it on the radio. I was out of town for business.
- 38:51Come back to eat, come back out to eat.
- 38:53And I'm like, well, let me get on my phone.
- 38:54Let me see what the score is. And I was like, it was a sports
- 38:57bar down the street. I'm like, they probably have it.
- 39:00By the time I got in, we were up, 18.
- 39:02Let's just say, needless to say, I didn't go back.
- 39:05Check out to lunch 18-point blowout because they just had
- 39:09and I don't think we expected this.
- 39:10We expect the dating to be At least a formal opponent.
- 39:15They just took it too. Well, they were predicted to
- 39:18finish what one or two in the A-10.
- 39:21Yeah, I'll let you go down it and they're not going to fit in
- 39:24there. Not going to finish their.
- 39:27I'll although I a 10 as a whole is down this year.
- 39:32So do with that what you will. But but still it's importantly,
- 39:37I mean, you still got to take care of your business, right?
- 39:40I mean, that's still a solid. Solidly talented date and team,
- 39:44they're not garbage. No, but we bet we made him look
- 39:47that way. Made with that way.
- 39:49You almost beat a team by 30 from the, a 10.
- 39:53It says a lot, especially if it's a day to VCU.
- 39:56Those type teams from the A-10. And, again, I didn't you have to
- 40:00go back out. I just sat there and I can't
- 40:04remember what game was on TV. I watch that and just kind of
- 40:06updated and it grew bigger, and he grew bigger, and it was like,
- 40:09more have mercy. We're gonna beat em up, 40,
- 40:11which almost has is Roma. All right, let's talk about the
- 40:16game. We got to catch the second half
- 40:18together on Sunday, the Oklahoma State versus Oklahoma State.
- 40:22Cowboys, I watched the first half.
- 40:24We give me a to come over to your house.
- 40:28Bad point lead. This is good.
- 40:30I get to your house and that lead is all, but gone in an Okie
- 40:36State's favor and I was like, Brian, what's happened?
- 40:40You know, what the heck happened in these first few minutes that
- 40:45I missed and you were kind of hanging out there.
- 40:47I mean the first in the first half we were you know they had a
- 40:50lot of turnovers. We were able to take advantage
- 40:54of some of them probably not as much as we should have and lead
- 40:57the first half. Have been probably bigger than
- 40:58it was and then in the second half, you know, you come out,
- 41:03you missed a couple bad shot, you have a couple bad turnovers
- 41:07and their hidden right there. Clicking on the offensive end at
- 41:12least early in that that second half.
- 41:14They hit a about two or three, threes in back-to-back.
- 41:18Possessions. We weren't putting points on the
- 41:22board. We are having some in a lot of
- 41:24empty possessions. And that kind of that that cuts
- 41:28into a nine-point lead real quick.
- 41:30Yeah it does. Well we look up I remember when
- 41:33me and you were sitting there talking it was like a they
- 41:35essentially had went on a 21-day run to open the second half and
- 41:39it's completely flipped. It took the lead on themselves
- 41:41but give this team a lot of credit.
- 41:44Give a lot of the different. A lot of different players on
- 41:47this team credit as well because they really showed a lot of
- 41:51heart. A lot of an old term we don't
- 41:54use anymore but a lot of Grit, you know, you had kid, give
- 42:01solid minutes off the bench even though he didn't score much,
- 42:03same with Michael Collins poteete, eight points 6, boards
- 42:10played some good position, defense down low.
- 42:14He made their cannot think of the guys name there.
- 42:17Big guy Boone, maybe he made him work.
- 42:22He had to work for his points in the second half, especially
- 42:25later. And then, all of a sudden, about
- 42:27three minutes tie ball game. Basically, the Hokies just go on
- 42:33lock, essentially outscore them 6:48 in the final three plus
- 42:39minutes and in this game in reality, you look around, you
- 42:44know, mutts had a solid game, the seal has Grand, how solid
- 42:48game Padula? Had a solid game, this wasn't
- 42:52like you and see where months, it was months and a few games
- 42:55ago it It was Padula and earlier in the season, it was Grant,
- 43:00this was essentially that game where it was, it was all parts
- 43:04and it had to be all parts just because of what happened with
- 43:07that run early in the second half.
- 43:10Yeah, I mean you had a couple guys in foul trouble months had
- 43:14to go out for a good portion of the second half.
- 43:18So that's why you had guys like kids step up, poteete Step Up.
- 43:24Obviously Grant had a good game. We saw Padula hit a couple big
- 43:29shots there. When we were down to kind of get
- 43:32us back even then get us, get us the lead.
- 43:36So I mean it was it was a all-hands-on-deck effort to
- 43:39close that one out and we've had a couple of those this year so
- 43:42far that I think it prepared us for that type of atmosphere when
- 43:45we get into ACC play. Absolutely.
- 43:48I think some of these games they rack our nerves.
- 43:52They may He make us go a little senile little bit crazy, but
- 43:56reality is you just said it brown.
- 43:58There's gonna be games under 5 minutes in the ACC, and it's a
- 44:01one or two point game, or a tie game and the seams went through.
- 44:04It already the know how to lean on things, so we see that we see
- 44:08in the Penn State. Now, it took care of you state.
- 44:13Yep. And finally, finally, finally
- 44:17Braun after going 10 and 11, they finally get ranked this
- 44:20week, number 24. Yeah, I still got time.
- 44:25Yeah, they should have been 24 last week.
- 44:28Hopefully in probably 20 this week, but it is what it is.
- 44:32Next game up, is Grambling State, which is next Saturday
- 44:36and I think BC is next, Wednesday, Grambling State is
- 44:39going to be a sneaky good matchup.
- 44:43That's one. We can't sleep walk through now
- 44:46that can't become a Charleston. Southern.
- 44:48No, that can't be coming to Charleston.
- 44:50Southern you need to go ahead and put what you got out there
- 44:53and close the door early and finish the game, alright?
- 44:57Want to talk this real quick with the ladies hoopsters.
- 45:00I mean, obviously they dominated BC, you know, start to finish,
- 45:07they dominate UNC Asheville and when by 38, but it was the game
- 45:11preceding those two and the Wind over at Tennessee.
- 45:15And I know Tennessee. This year is not what they were.
- 45:17Last year, they were top 10 team last year like, there's seven
- 45:21and four out of the gate this year.
- 45:23But either way that 74 is deceptive.
- 45:28I mean, let it look who they lost to and and what the score
- 45:31was and how they lost its true. It's not, I mean, I know I know
- 45:34they'd fallen in terms of being, you know, a ranked team but
- 45:39they're much better than their record indicates right now.
- 45:43So You can just you can just look at the the point I'd come
- 45:47and say alright yeah well that's you skirted by an unranked.
- 45:52Yes this is a little different, a little different than that.
- 45:56It's me. That's why I'm saying, they're
- 45:57not top team, they're a top 25 Team without a doubt, but
- 46:01they're not a top-10. What they were I think last year
- 46:04but just to get the win on the road there that was a absolute
- 46:09nail-biter at the end. We could have been an easy win.
- 46:13But you know, No, that is what it is.
- 46:15The big one though, to me the game this Sunday.
- 46:20The game this Sunday determines if we're just a good team you
- 46:26know sweet 16 Elite eight or if this team has a final four
- 46:30running because Notre, Dame's women team is essentially one of
- 46:35the elite women's teams in the country.
- 46:37I think they have one loss to share their number six or number
- 46:40five in the country. I mean, there's your test, you
- 46:44go out there and win that game. That is a signature.
- 46:47Win for Kevin Brooks. It's a signature win for the
- 46:49program. But that also puts people on
- 46:51notice that this team can win a National Championship this year.
- 46:56Yeah, I mean we're on, they're on the cusp, it's closed.
- 47:00They're, you know, they may not be a favor to do it but they're
- 47:04certainly putting themselves in the Dark Horse category,
- 47:07abso-freaking-lutely. All right.
- 47:09Brian. Um, one more thing before we hit
- 47:13the break here and you know, if everybody in the college
- 47:17football World had been paying attention You know, Mike Leach
- 47:21passed away today. and, You know, if you ever watched
- 47:30interviews with the guy, I mean, it wasn't going to be about
- 47:34football off time. It was gonna be about some
- 47:37random things and make you chuckle.
- 47:38Make you laugh. You know, they were showing
- 47:41different interviews. I forgot 60 Minutes interview
- 47:45him like 12 years ago. Yep.
- 47:48You always kind of wonder how that Scott Pelley.
- 47:51Felt when he'll go interview Mike Leach as a football coach,
- 47:54this will be easy. What?
- 47:58But, you know, I don't think there's a topic that you could
- 48:02bring up that he couldn't say something about that was either
- 48:07thought provoking or mine fucking what just hilarious or
- 48:12just a larious. The whole thing about the, the
- 48:15marriage thing, if you've ever seen, you seen the marriage when
- 48:18he had up at y Zu, right? Yeah.
- 48:21When we talked about, oh my God, that's just, it's just
- 48:24hilarious. Hilarious.
- 48:25Arius and obviously you know as much as he was a personality he
- 48:29was himself. The guy was also a supreme
- 48:32intellect, the guy got his JD from Pepperdine.
- 48:35The guy was smart and if we talked about it we've talked
- 48:39about we're in a day and age where everything is as common as
- 48:44which bone was to our high school Youth and he was the guy
- 48:48that did it. How money was the guy who
- 48:51brought it to the mainstream, Mike Leach, made it work in the
- 48:55Moon. Great.
- 48:56What he did at Texas Tech and what he did everywhere because
- 49:00everywhere he went the program's got better with that offensive
- 49:03system then. Yeah.
- 49:06And took the non-traditional roads some would say because he
- 49:10had to and some would say because he wanted to and I'd
- 49:13probably both are a little bit true.
- 49:17Absolutely. And you know he was a character
- 49:20and you know in we were talking with our our buddy Rob e Compton
- 49:24today. Our coach buddy and Robbie
- 49:28actually got the opportunity long time ago when he was
- 49:31coaching at our high school called up.
- 49:34They were trying to implement some Airaid Concepts to what
- 49:38they did called up. Texas Tech said, hey we want to
- 49:42come see you guys and him and David techie who's got?
- 49:47He's ahead, he's brought that tribe.
- 49:49His head coach building Wilkesboro, they got a chance to
- 49:53go out there for a week and spend time.
- 49:55Lucina staff at Texas Tech to understand those Concepts and
- 49:59this was probably one of the coolest things that happened.
- 50:03Ron, you know, you saw Robbie talk to us because he was like,
- 50:06what story. There was more than one, Mike
- 50:08Lee Story Robbie had. So he got to meet them.
- 50:12And this was Lincoln, Riley was on staff.
- 50:13Ruffin McNeil was on staff. So he got to the front Robbie.
- 50:16And Dave, got to know those guys.
- 50:18And then they coach these see you right?
- 50:19In their backyard when they were down in Greenville, North
- 50:22Carolina coaching. And, but when he told us about
- 50:25what, Was really cool. Is they were an AFC, a clinic.
- 50:28And for those who don't know, afca is the American football
- 50:32coaches association. They have big clinics every
- 50:35year. They could send February says
- 50:37right after the season wraps, so if you're a lot of High School
- 50:41coaches, get together these a lot of them take the time to go
- 50:43because you're in seminars, everything.
- 50:46I don't know if it was always in Orlando, with this one was in
- 50:48Orlando. Correct?
- 50:49I think this one was in Orlando. Yeah, it was in Orlando.
- 50:53I'm looking at the message Robbie sent us here.
- 50:55And so they go there and they run across coach Leach and he
- 51:01called him over. So first of all, these are two
- 51:05guys from a small, High School in southern rural Virginia.
- 51:09One of the most well-known is Collegiate football.
- 51:11Coaches waves, you over at this conference in from there he took
- 51:16them. This is like a, who's who's
- 51:18list? He wouldn't introduce them to
- 51:20Gary Patterson. Vinnie introduced him to Bob
- 51:23Stoops at Oklahoma. Then he introduced him to Matt
- 51:26Brown, they got to hang out with Ruffin and Lincoln a little bit
- 51:29who were on the staff at that time.
- 51:31Even more at the AFC, a conference.
- 51:34But here is the funny part and this is where it's like, Mike
- 51:37Leach. So as he's introducing, our
- 51:43buddy, Robbie and go to a techie.
- 51:45He told all the coaches, these guys are from South Boston.
- 51:50The one in Virginia, not the one up north, where they whack
- 51:54people, and I think that's a perfect summation of whom my
- 51:57cleavage. Number one, the fact that he
- 52:03recall that information from previous interactions with
- 52:08again, you know, to High School coaches that he came across, you
- 52:12know, one time before that, that's impressive. the
- 52:20interjection of the humor there is, is impressive, you know,
- 52:25this, this is probably right around the time when You know.
- 52:32Some movies like Mystic River. Probably just came out.
- 52:36Arted little card in probably just came out.
- 52:39Yes, so But yeah, it's one of those things where you get the
- 52:44story like that and its people ever.
- 52:46If people everywhere to question and say I'm not look that Mike
- 52:50Leach has stuff that doesn't seem real like nope, we have
- 52:53someone that met him. They could confirm what you saw
- 52:57was what you got. Rest in Peach coach leech, you
- 53:01will be missed for your humor for, you know, just your
- 53:07creativity man. And it's a great coach going way
- 53:10too soon, right? Yep.
- 53:12You change the game and you did it with the smile on your face
- 53:15and he put a smile on everybody else's.
- 53:16So rest in peace. Yes sir.
- 53:18All right before we get into some more topics tonight, we are
- 53:21going to take a quick pause for a message from our digital
- 53:24partners. As we take a quick break, we'd

- 53:38You can get your free report by visiting.
- 53:40Grassroots digital studio.com forward slash free Dash website,
- 53:45Dash report. Now back to the episode.
- 53:48All right Brian so we definitely have some other things we want
- 53:50to talk about just college football related and obviously
- 53:54since we last Out a boatload. A boatload of coaching hires
- 54:01have taken place in. We're going to focus, just on a
- 54:05handful, but I want to mention the other ones that have gotten
- 54:10hired. I think one, that definitely
- 54:14surprised me. I don't know if it's a prized.
- 54:16You was Troy Taylor out of Sacramento State.
- 54:18The FCS programs gets to call to go over to Stanford.
- 54:22Did not see that coming and all At all, at all.
- 54:27But did you know that Roy Taylor on your list for Santa boy?
- 54:33Taylor was out on my short list for anywhere, let alone.
- 54:35Stanford, all right, so he goes there and that's no disrespect
- 54:39to him. I mean, I think it still They
- 54:42wonder if it's a it's interesting, I don't think it's
- 54:45a bad hire, it's an interesting higher.
- 54:47Well, they did this previously they did this previously, is
- 54:52they did this with harbach because Harbaugh was at San
- 54:55Diego, which was an FCS program in the state of California.
- 54:59The difference is everyone who the hell Jim Harbaugh was,
- 55:02nobody knows. He'll Troy Taylor is so it's
- 55:05like we're going the same route, but this time we have no
- 55:08notoriety. It's just a good football coach.
- 55:10And from, you know, the looks of State, he is a good football
- 55:14coach so there's that one now, a couple of the other ones.
- 55:18Let's roll these out. USF.
- 55:21Takes Alice goldish. The Tennessee EOC will be very
- 55:25interesting to see if that affects the Tennessee offense.
- 55:29Any sense heiple does have his hands.
- 55:31So involved, I also find it. Interesting.
- 55:34UCF goes down, the route of coordinator with really good
- 55:38offense again the Jeff Scott hire from Clemson.
- 55:41Absolutely will. It's trash and I don't think
- 55:45he's a trash coach. I just don't think some guys are
- 55:47cut out to be head coaches. Was FAU shocking to you with Tom
- 55:54Herman. Or is it just one of those he's
- 55:56reintroducing himself? I thought it was.
- 56:01I thought he could have done better but I think it's a it's a
- 56:06good. If he wants to get back into
- 56:09more of a blue blood program quicker.
- 56:16This is probably the better route than taking a risk on a
- 56:19Level P5. And if you fail, you pretty
- 56:22much, said, yourself back a good ways, coordinator forever, when
- 56:28that happens coordinator for everyone that happens.
- 56:31Um, Kevin Wilson leaves will be leaving Ohio State to head down
- 56:34to Tulsa. He has been in an offensive
- 56:36coordinator there for a while. He also had been a head coach at
- 56:41Indiana. Sounds like, second swipe at
- 56:45second swipe at, you know, a head coaching job.
- 56:49Obviously, I was watching Tulsa closely they didn't they didn't
- 56:54do it, I think they do. But, you know, it is what it is.
- 56:59I mean I'm just being real. How about this, how about this
- 57:02one for you? How about this one for you UAB
- 57:04hires Trent Dilfer has been coaching High School.
- 57:09Is you a be trying to find the white Beyond?
- 57:17Wait now because if they were trying to do that they would try
- 57:20to hire like Peyton or somebody not you know drought Trent
- 57:25Dilfer not the guy that literally what is it?
- 57:31Trent Dilfer is a game manager though.
- 57:34He wasn't gay manager. I mean he's always had some good
- 57:36insights on the board's. Next few here want to talk about
- 57:41just hit before we hit kind of the ones that are really
- 57:43affecting that or I see more affecting the Hokies Lance
- 57:48Taylor, the running back coach for Notre Dame takes Western
- 57:51Michigan. You know, he's the Run game
- 57:56coordinator there, so not even an OC yet.
- 57:59I mean I guess some guys it's just and I don't know where
- 58:02lands Taylor from, so maybe he's from that area and it's just one
- 58:05of those. I'm going to take the chance.
- 58:08They'll know, it's a head coaching job.
- 58:12Here's the name and I'm very shocked by this Barry.
- 58:15Odom. Went to UNLV.
- 58:17He is recently in Arkansas. I know they had a six and six
- 58:20season but kind of shocking to see him go that direction to a
- 58:25program like UNLV which is you know, the old guy was there had
- 58:31a couple okay Seasons but it's not like one of those.
- 58:33It's not like a San Diego State or like a program like that out.
- 58:38The west where you feel like, you know, they can they can get
- 58:40up pretty quick and be good. And that's not to say UNLV can't
- 58:45and hasn't it's just it's not as ready.
- 58:48Made of a situation for a guy, like Barry Odom.
- 58:56You know, we'll see if that ends up working out.
- 59:01It's definitely a different path and he took last time.
- 59:03So, you know, you kind of see, see how that works out for him.
- 59:08True true. All right.
- 59:10And with that, Let's go to the ones that I think are could one
- 59:16that could have been impactful and the others that will be
- 59:19impactful. The one that could have been
- 59:22impactful if he had taken. Any potentially any job that was
- 59:31open the Louisville. The Georgia Tech's etc.
- 59:35Etc. East Coast ACC or adjacent
- 59:40School Deion Sanders who goes to Colorado.
- 59:45And anybody can talk about all the stuff he said.
- 59:48That's that is what it is. I think a lot of those things
- 59:52take place like that when coaches get places.
- 59:54I just think he's got publicizing it but him and
- 59:59Colorado, I mean, you discussed this brine And it's if he goes
- 1:00:06and wins in Colorado, if he just wins four games next year and he
- 1:00:09gets up to eight games in year 2 year, 3, what's going to happen?
- 1:00:14He's going to get Blueblood offers quickly.
- 1:00:17Yeah, this is essentially I think a three-year plan for him
- 1:00:21and Colorado. I think he just has to make a
- 1:00:25bowl year, two and three. If he gets if he gets that that
- 1:00:31team as awful as it was this past season to a bowl in year-2
- 1:00:34and year-3 especially if you're in a seven or eight win team in
- 1:00:38year three. Yeah I mean they're going to
- 1:00:40come calling. Yeah and to me I think this is
- 1:00:43why he took that That job too. I don't think Dianna needs
- 1:00:47money. I think Dion between
- 1:00:48endorsements and playing two sports for basically close to
- 1:00:51ten years as the pay scales were starting to go up in those
- 1:00:54Sports. I don't think he needs the
- 1:00:56money, but I think what he saw as if I've also been an analyst
- 1:00:59make it, which I mean, the money in that game is risen
- 1:01:02significantly. So, you know, he's been making
- 1:01:03good money there to between NFL Network in Barstool.
- 1:01:06I mean, you know, he's making good money doing that stuff
- 1:01:09before you jumped over to Jackson State.
- 1:01:11But I think it's this is a program where he looks and says
- 1:01:13there. Nothing expected.
- 1:01:16And by that he could say, even if I went three or four games
- 1:01:19next chamber, like all your failure, I'm turning this
- 1:01:21program around, I'm building it, but he knows if he can make it a
- 1:01:25quick turn around. He's going to get a Blueblood
- 1:01:28offer. Who knows what that might be?
- 1:01:30I think just for our sake, he did not go to a more mid-level
- 1:01:34ACC school like we were about to discuss because also thankfully
- 1:01:40Mike Norvell had a good season. Well, but but let's let's,
- 1:01:46let's, let's talk about that real quick.
- 1:01:48If Florida State goes and hires him, okay, if Florida State goes
- 1:01:55at hiring, I mean, it's more of a trickle down for us than it is
- 1:01:58an immediate sure because if he steps in somewhere, like
- 1:02:02Louisville or Georgia Tech, I mean that's immediately he's
- 1:02:07going to be feeding off the Blue Bloods while stealing from
- 1:02:12similar level programs like Tech.
- 1:02:14Yeah. And that's where like, that's
- 1:02:16the one that worries you Colorado.
- 1:02:18You feel like it's going to be more of a California tears.
- 1:02:23And just saying, FSU eats at a higher level of the food chain
- 1:02:26than we're, we're doing and they do.
- 1:02:28They do? They do they do I won't even if
- 1:02:32anybody wants argue about that, let's argue about it.
- 1:02:35That's just the way I feel now. The next one I want to talk
- 1:02:41about and I think you're pretty excited when this guy got hired
- 1:02:45because you've watched his offense a few times and, you
- 1:02:47know, we can prepare for and that's Liberty hiring Jamie
- 1:02:50Chadwell out of coastal. Chadwell who'd been getting a
- 1:02:54lot of Buzz. Basically gets a five times pay
- 1:02:57bump. Yep.
- 1:02:59To go to Liberty Hill be eventually in Conference USA.
- 1:03:05So its it's like a, it's a lateral move, it's a lateral.
- 1:03:09Move, the Only thing you'll say, you getting paid more and he's
- 1:03:12in a less competitive conference at the same level.
- 1:03:15So same Prestige, less competitive and expectation.
- 1:03:20Why's he doesn't have to win 10 games every year anymore.
- 1:03:25Sure, you can win seven or eight and they'll probably still be
- 1:03:29happy, very true. But as far as the Hokey goes to
- 1:03:33hook, he's going to be playing this team for the foreseeable
- 1:03:36future. Unfortunately both in Blacksburg
- 1:03:39In Lynchburg you mentioned to me about looking at it like you
- 1:03:44were like the day Hugh, freeze went to Auburn.
- 1:03:46It was like, thank God. No more preparing for that shit.
- 1:03:50Yeah, it's like you look. Chadwell's offenses, like we can
- 1:03:53control this How do you oh, do you can control it?
- 1:03:57I think we, I think we can control that if if only you can
- 1:04:00control it and look at the strategy that ogod you put out
- 1:04:05there, get that offense and check was able to do more
- 1:04:09offensively than I think a lot of people expected against them.
- 1:04:12I think the the the blueprint is kind of out there on on what
- 1:04:19Coastal is doing now. True me what Chadwell was doing
- 1:04:22at kostal, it's going to Interested to see if.
- 1:04:27If Grace and follows him, that's fine because Grace is because
- 1:04:31got one year left, right? Yeah, that's fine.
- 1:04:35I think the bigger thing about this and I think for us, it's
- 1:04:38more of a, not a sigh of relief and it's Assad relief breathe.
- 1:04:42But what he was doing was he was essentially taking division, one
- 1:04:47guys and because he was Hugh freeze.
- 1:04:50He could recruit them to Liberty without an issue, right?
- 1:04:53Yeah, not an issue. Come here.
- 1:04:54Play for me. I can develop you.
- 1:04:55I can get you moved on. On to bigger and better things.
- 1:04:59I don't think Chad Wells. Got that cloud.
- 1:05:01I think Chad Wells going to have them recruiting both.
- 1:05:06For high school and portal where they should be.
- 1:05:10We're Hugh freeze has been well above their pay grade for the
- 1:05:13last few seasons. Hugh freeze made his hay in the
- 1:05:16portal Chadwell is going to be all about, just like he was at
- 1:05:20Coastal. Taking guys that are to and low
- 1:05:24three-star guys, and getting more out of them because they
- 1:05:29can operate well within this system.
- 1:05:32Absolutely, by the way, there's one other thing here.
- 1:05:35I didn't know. About this and it's not Netflix
- 1:05:40Robbie into Luke. It's a Hulu series that it's
- 1:05:42talking about Liberty. They are so Jamie Chadwell in
- 1:05:48the Hulu series. All right, let's go there Pool,
- 1:05:51Boys. Involved potentially, he wasn't
- 1:05:54Myrtle Beach man. So I mean the last two I want to
- 1:05:58do so that semen. The last two I want to hit
- 1:06:01tonight. Sign of interchangeable is
- 1:06:05Scott's Satterfield leaves Louisville to go to Cincinnati.
- 1:06:10Thus opening the door and allowing Jeff Brahman.
- 1:06:14Let's start with Satterfield first.
- 1:06:15I think Satterfield just felt the Heat.
- 1:06:19I think Cincinnati wants Luke fickle left.
- 1:06:21They knew they needed to get a proven P5.
- 1:06:24Head coach as they make this transition over to the Big 12
- 1:06:28and I think for him it's like well now my ass is not on the
- 1:06:31hot seat anymore. I'm going to go and that's all
- 1:06:34it was if he was off the hot seat he was all thoughts eat
- 1:06:40enough where he would get this type of offer and he struck
- 1:06:43while the iron's hot. And I mean, he's probably safe
- 1:06:48room of us wouldn't have done that.
- 1:06:51A lot of people wouldn't, but he know, he's now safe to four to
- 1:06:53five years for them. They know that he's a quality
- 1:06:56coach. Is he gonna blow the doors off
- 1:06:58of Everybody? Probably not.
- 1:07:00But is he gonna be able to settle them into the Big 12?
- 1:07:02Yeah, he's got a solid floor. Yeah.
- 1:07:06They they they know what that transition.
- 1:07:08He's talking they're not going to enter there and he's going to
- 1:07:09be god-awful, he will keep them at least above that kind of
- 1:07:13forward to five when fret. Threshold it might miss a bowl
- 1:07:17but it's not going to be by more than one game or so exactly.
- 1:07:21But when that happened, unfortunately and I do not like
- 1:07:25this, I do not like this at all. He is not a great recruiter, but
- 1:07:29the guy can Coach Jeff brohm to Louisville.
- 1:07:33Should have everybody's ears perked because we saw him, you
- 1:07:38know, we saw him knock off of how State we saw him hanging
- 1:07:41with some of the big boys when he was at Purdue including the
- 1:07:45In championship game where they took Michigan to the third
- 1:07:48quarter with the game, that guy knows what he's doing.
- 1:07:52He knows how to coach, quarterbacks, it's not, like I'm
- 1:07:56so scared of him. But, you know, now the next time
- 1:08:01we play Louisville, it's going to be a damn fight because of
- 1:08:04how good of a coach is. My question is, you know, you
- 1:08:08tell me what you think. I'm not sure why.
- 1:08:12Jeff brohm took this move. Its alma mater, man.
- 1:08:18It's all. That's all.
- 1:08:19That's the only thing I can feel because I said and best there,
- 1:08:27it's a parallel boov. And if you look at the other
- 1:08:31intangible factors like Meteorites, and things like
- 1:08:37that. It's a step down.
- 1:08:39It is and but it's, I think it's going home.
- 1:08:42I think he knows he goes there, he's got more leeway.
- 1:08:48And he probably has about the same amount of leeway in Purdue,
- 1:08:51but I think it's just one of those things he played there,
- 1:08:54probably a harder path to a championship game to at
- 1:08:58Louisville, so problem. Well, I don't know.
- 1:09:02I've been with without divisions.
- 1:09:05Willow. No.
- 1:09:07But the Big Ten is going in the direction of having no
- 1:09:09divisions. Now.
- 1:09:11Sure, but I mean it's still a harder path.
- 1:09:15I guess. I just think it's one of those
- 1:09:17home things. I think it's one of those.
- 1:09:19He wanted to probably go back home.
- 1:09:20I mean, Brom isn't a spring chicken by any means.
- 1:09:24I mean Bronze in his early 50s, he's probably, he's been
- 1:09:28coaching. I mean, he played essentially
- 1:09:31for seven years and he's been coaching for almost 20 He's
- 1:09:35basically been coaching since he was in his 30s.
- 1:09:40Maybe it's one of those if I win here silently.
- 1:09:43They're going to keep me around 10 years and I can retire.
- 1:09:46I'm interested to see if Brian Braun comes as his brother did
- 1:09:50coaching with him and staff. Everybody knows Ryan Braun.
- 1:09:53That poor guy took the absolute biggest worst beating I've ever
- 1:09:56seen a quarterback. Take when the hook is play them
- 1:09:59in the Gator Bowl about 16 years ago.
- 1:10:01We just shit out of him. Absolute shit.
- 1:10:04Yeah. Yeah, like watching that game,
- 1:10:09it got to a point where it's just like I mean I'm glad we're
- 1:10:12beating their ass. But there's your coaching
- 1:10:21Carousel. Purdue still open, obviously,
- 1:10:24with the passing of my cleats. You know, Mississippi state will
- 1:10:26be open, will be interesting to see what they do.
- 1:10:29But that pretty much I think that went a lot faster than
- 1:10:32anyone expected. It seems like has got locked in
- 1:10:37and fuck. The next thing you know, just
- 1:10:39about everything filled up in the in the game of headsets.
- 1:10:48So let me go real quick and I know we don't have them all up
- 1:10:50here, but who is since we've pretty much rounded it out, best
- 1:10:55tire of the bunch. I mean, best tire.
- 1:11:03It's got to be Colorado. I mean, I think trajectory wise
- 1:11:08that's going to put them back in in the discussion.
- 1:11:11And within two years, I'd say close s going to be Louisville
- 1:11:17with Jeff brohm. All right.
- 1:11:18Well, I should have said, what we talked about the original set
- 1:11:21to because I'm still thank you for Reese.
- 1:11:24I think freeze to Auburn is still the biggest, the best one
- 1:11:28because he knows we can't out there.
- 1:11:30When we haven't talked about that, we talked about Purdue Oh,
- 1:11:33did they hire somebody today? Ryan Walters Ryan.
- 1:11:38Walters why does that name sound familiar DC for Illinois?
- 1:11:43But that thing sounds really familiar.
- 1:11:45All this is a new and this is breaking Brian focusing.
- 1:11:50Here, Ryan Walters a 36-year old, where did he play of the in
- 1:11:56the league or anything? Well, you played it Colorado.
- 1:12:01Um, I don't know how I feel on this one.
- 1:12:07I mean, I mean with us playing Purdue to start that season.
- 1:12:11I'm glad I've got it. They do have a defense, so be,
- 1:12:15we're going to get it. I mean, he is good on defense, I
- 1:12:18should say, I don't know if we'll see, Purdue playing that
- 1:12:20stat of Defense out the gate, but I mean, he's definitely
- 1:12:23somebody that can come in. And with, with the pieces they
- 1:12:26have. I think their defense are going
- 1:12:27to maybe causes some Problems. But we'll see, we'll see.
- 1:12:32But they just lost an offensive Guru that kept them in games so
- 1:12:36they will see how it goes there. All right, Brian, let's hit this
- 1:12:40real quick. Few things on this.
- 1:12:44Did you applaud the committee about eight days ago when they
- 1:12:49announced Georgia Ohio State in the Peach Bowl?
- 1:12:53Michigan, TCU in the Fiesta Bowl?
- 1:12:56Yeah, they got it, right. If you're going to be, you're
- 1:13:01going to pick for they got it right?
- 1:13:03Alright. Can I ask you this?
- 1:13:06If the Rose Bowl hadn't committed to 2024, would they
- 1:13:10have done something stupid? Divorce tactful maybe, maybe
- 1:13:17political flag. Let's just irritates the shit
- 1:13:20out of some. Well I mean I think we said it
- 1:13:22we said you know whether they put Alabama in or out it was
- 1:13:25going to cause a Ruckus and I think would cause more of a
- 1:13:29Ruckus if they put them in and then leaving them out.
- 1:13:32Absolutely. Maybe.
- 1:13:35You look at the resumes, it just didn't make sense to put Alabama
- 1:13:38in there. Like I test be damned, you still
- 1:13:41have to play the games yourself to win the games, being a having
- 1:13:44good losses, doesn't matter if you didn't win anything.
- 1:13:47Well, my best piece was watching Sabin on on that Saturday night.
- 1:13:54I didn't get to see it all. That's all Clips.
- 1:13:56We'd be favored in Vegas. You're also favorite against LSU
- 1:13:59and Tennessee and you didn't win those games, so you still have
- 1:14:04to win the game. Are in front of you.
- 1:14:07I mean, we don't we don't just play this game on paper.
- 1:14:10So you should play the game on paper.
- 1:14:12You'd be the national champion every year or every other year
- 1:14:16touche touche does the baby George and maybe Ohio State
- 1:14:19sneaking their year to year because they might have a little
- 1:14:22bit of better class or the combination of classes might be
- 1:14:25a hair better than Alabama's a given year.
- 1:14:28But most years give or take, it's going to be Alabama right
- 1:14:31there, right? So That's why we play the games.
- 1:14:37That is why we play the games. If you, I said it in the Tweet,
- 1:14:41if you want to be in and you don't want to have to have this
- 1:14:46conversation, Then win enough games where you're not sitting
- 1:14:50at home during your conference Championship, especially with
- 1:14:54two losses and they wouldn't have been there either way this
- 1:14:57year, regardless, if they were divisions are not in the SEC
- 1:15:01which I think the SEC is getting rid of them soon too.
- 1:15:03All right New Year's Eve. I'm sure you're going to be
- 1:15:08making a big spread. Getting a good Bible.
- 1:15:11Which game are you looking more forward to You know what, I
- 1:15:18think Michigan TCU is going to be more interesting to me, okay?
- 1:15:25Because I think, TCU can score, Michigan.
- 1:15:30You can stop. We'll see what, where the, where
- 1:15:36the rubber meets the road there? I think the difference is going
- 1:15:39to be Michigan's rushing attack. I think it's just going to be
- 1:15:44too much and that that offensive line is a bunch of monsters.
- 1:15:48Including you know they got the Remington us all.
- 1:15:50Oh, I got one Remington and Nagurski, right?
- 1:15:55I think so. No, we won the Remington the
- 1:15:56center. I mean I'm more interested to
- 1:16:00see this I'm more interested to see if Ohio State can actually
- 1:16:05hit their potential. Because I don't think they've
- 1:16:09hit their potential all year on either side of the ball and now
- 1:16:12they've been get. They've been reprieved.
- 1:16:14This is 2014 again. They've been reprieved, they're
- 1:16:18playing a southern team. In their backyard that has a
- 1:16:23very good defense but a game manager at quarterback.
- 1:16:28We all remember how that game when 2014 when Alabama, lay left
- 1:16:33crushed in the Sugar Bowl, so we'll see.
- 1:16:38I'm actually I'm just looking forward to both of them and you
- 1:16:41know, eating good food, having a good drink.
- 1:16:45All right, so we just kind of mentioned this a few minutes ago
- 1:16:49with the Rose Bowl who have amended their contract and it's
- 1:16:52finally happening 2024, we will have 12 teams playoff and
- 1:17:01looking at it too. I think it's also going to be
- 1:17:05just eyeballing where the championship game is it is going
- 1:17:09to be a return of importance to New Year's Eve and New Year's
- 1:17:12Day. I think it's going to go back to
- 1:17:14like, when we were kids we're in there were games those days, it
- 1:17:20was implicating National Championship type stuff.
- 1:17:25Yeah, I think that's the big thing is that you're going to
- 1:17:27see New Year's Eve New Year's Day those games.
- 1:17:31Not just matter. Now again but they matter.
- 1:17:34In terms of the big picture, the big picture that's going to be
- 1:17:37quarterfinal games. Yep.
- 1:17:39Honest-to-god believe that. And it's a return to glory to me
- 1:17:42for those days because I remember as a kid you kind of
- 1:17:45would there would always be that New Year's Eve night game.
- 1:17:49That was of some importance of some importance.
- 1:17:53Yep. The New Year's Day you Had the
- 1:17:55rose, the sugar, the fiesta all over the place.
- 1:17:58But the reason I say that and people are like, why are you
- 1:18:01saying this? We haven't heard the schedule
- 1:18:03yet, but one thing we know already in the soon as they drop
- 1:18:07this, I called Brian meet him, talk about 30 minutes on the
- 1:18:11championship game is on the 20th.
- 1:18:13That is effectively two weeks later.
- 1:18:18Later than it has been being roughly.
- 1:18:23If that's the case, when are you going to be the home dates?
- 1:18:27The home dates would likely Fall like on this weekend?
- 1:18:30It would be the first weekend of bowl season.
- 1:18:34My every year, we'll talk about in a few minutes here.
- 1:18:38We're going to pick some of the games real quick. 16th and 17th
- 1:18:41are your first big bowl games. My bet in two years that
- 1:18:46weekend, which is the 20 and 21st that's going to be your
- 1:18:49home playing games. Because then okay, you're going
- 1:18:54to give everybody, you're not going to change Conference
- 1:18:56Championship week, right? But everybody's going to know
- 1:18:59and roughly have two weeks to prepare whether whether it's
- 1:19:02fans buying tickets teams, making travel Arrangements, etc,
- 1:19:06etc. Did you get the Army-Navy game?
- 1:19:10Then it's this. Right?
- 1:19:13It's this perfect sequence and then obviously, New Year's Day
- 1:19:18quarterfinal games and then what did I show you Brian about when
- 1:19:24I think the semis would be and you started looking Doug and
- 1:19:26you're like crap that that actually makes freaking sense.
- 1:19:32Yeah, I mean, I think we're looking at what we said.
- 1:19:35Kind of that. What was it like eight or nine
- 1:19:39to 14 day window between kind of each round depending on where
- 1:19:44New Year's was falling? Yeah.
- 1:19:48But when we looked at it, the last weekend of the NFL season,
- 1:19:52in which everybody knows last week in the nfc's and Brian are
- 1:19:55there. Thursday night games.
- 1:19:57No. Are there Saturday night games?
- 1:20:00No other Monday night games? No, it's one day, everything on
- 1:20:06Sunday, everything's on Sunday. And if you look at the way it's
- 1:20:10going, I think they're going to be targeting that Saturday every
- 1:20:15year, because there's no, Petition with the NFL.
- 1:20:18But for casual football, fans, who are getting prepared for the
- 1:20:21last weekend away saying it's two of the biggest cotton and
- 1:20:24college. Football games right here,
- 1:20:26probably at 4:30 and 8:00 on a Saturday night.
- 1:20:29In the middle of January with nothing else to do.
- 1:20:32Yep. And then roughly, after that
- 1:20:34happens, you roughly have about what a nine-day window until the
- 1:20:37national championship game. Exactly.
- 1:20:40So they're your boy in the NFL. Yep.
- 1:20:44So we're looking at, I think we said seven, eight eight to
- 1:20:47twelve between each round in there, like, depending on where
- 1:20:51that that New Year's Day falls and that's going to be big
- 1:20:57because it's going to give give them an opportunity.
- 1:20:59Like you said to have full reign of a Saturday again.
- 1:21:06No competition from the NFL, you got your own day there, it's on
- 1:21:10a weekend. You can have like a three or
- 1:21:15five and then have your 8:00 or 8:30.
- 1:21:17Yeah, but it's all yours and it can be a build up.
- 1:21:21There can be a huge game day at both locations.
- 1:21:24You know, these are going to be bowl games and that does sort of
- 1:21:30stink a little bit because You know, but that is what it is.
- 1:21:38But again, I think just looking at 10,000 feet.
- 1:21:41It's like this perfect here here here here and it's four games in
- 1:21:46a month. But with enough break time in
- 1:21:49between for each for the players to essentially, get the
- 1:21:51appropriate amount of rest you're not going on a five-day
- 1:21:53short week. Everything's going to be thought
- 1:21:55out and maybe in the future they move the game back to like a
- 1:21:58Thursday, which would make sense, because I hate Monday
- 1:22:00night games. It kills you, unless it's your
- 1:22:03team playing. All right, Brian.
- 1:22:07Let's make some bold picks because Friday afternoon.
- 1:22:10They start. We are glad they do.
- 1:22:14We are glutton for punishment. Let's hit up here.
- 1:22:17The Bahamas Bowl. I don't know how this bowl.
- 1:22:21Doesn't get more Fanfare because it's the Bahamas in December.
- 1:22:24It's like 80 it's Breezy. It's nice.
- 1:22:27It's Miami of Ohio versus UAB. I'll leave this one.
- 1:22:32I have no clue but I'm I'm trying to trim gel for manages
- 1:22:36games and that team that team is going to manage a win to impress
- 1:22:42their new head coach. Yeah, I'm gonna go UAB as well.
- 1:22:49I think they get it done. It feels right, it just feels
- 1:22:52right now. The next one is actually a bit
- 1:22:56more interesting and to me of that first weekend it might be
- 1:23:00the most interesting bowl game. It's the Cure Bowl on Friday
- 1:23:03night with the 25th ranked UTSA roadrunners versus number. 24.
- 1:23:09Troy CT. UTSA wins a Conference USA
- 1:23:13championship. Ian ship, Troy wins the Sun
- 1:23:15Belt. What do you think on this one?
- 1:23:18Brian? Because you feel like these are
- 1:23:20two very well-coached football teams.
- 1:23:21Both with I think double digit wins already.
- 1:23:25I feel like it's going to be a good game just because of, you
- 1:23:29know, you know the this the level of competition for both.
- 1:23:34Yeah, I think it's gonna be a good game but give meteoroid,
- 1:23:38I'm gonna take Troy here, they finished the season as good as
- 1:23:43Team at the G5 level, okay? And as as good as as a lot of
- 1:23:51teams could in the country altogether but the way they
- 1:23:54finished the season, I think they're going to they're going
- 1:23:56to close about take care of business.
- 1:23:59All right I'm gonna I'm gonna go against you here Jeff trailer
- 1:24:02down at UTSA that a guy who legitimately had coached High
- 1:24:06School football for like 20 plus years and then just UTSA.
- 1:24:10Hey do you want this college job?
- 1:24:12He takes it. He's been sick.
- 1:24:13Successful. There the whole time.
- 1:24:16His only two losses this year are Houston and Texas and the
- 1:24:21Texas game was legitimately a game.
- 1:24:23Until the late third, quarter beat some really good teams in
- 1:24:28Conference USA dominated. Most of them dominated their
- 1:24:33conference Championship game so I think UTSA takes it just to be
- 1:24:38contrary and just so you know watching it's a Friday night
- 1:24:42when you're wrong. You're You're wrong.
- 1:24:44I hope so. On Saturday, a slate full of
- 1:24:49game. Six bowls.
- 1:24:51Everybody says, why do they keep bowl games on they suck.
- 1:24:56But you know what? People are going to do Saturday.
- 1:24:59They're going it's cold outside. If they have shopping to do,
- 1:25:03they're going to get it done in the morning, then they're going
- 1:25:05to come back and they're going to crack a beer open.
- 1:25:08Pour it pour a little glass of a little mixture there and they're
- 1:25:12going to sit their ass on the couch and they're going to watch
- 1:25:15bowl games. All stinking day and it starts
- 1:25:20with the Fenway Bowl Louisville versus Cincinnati.
- 1:25:24Can we please have both the coaches on the sidelines for
- 1:25:27this one just for pure hell. It's also a revisiting for the
- 1:25:32battle of the keg of nails and old rivalry trophy.
- 1:25:36Yeah. So you get an old rivalry
- 1:25:38trophy, you get the coach Swap and you get a layout where
- 1:25:43typically the teams are on the same side line.
- 1:25:46Exactly. It doesn't get any better than
- 1:25:49this and it's an 11:00 kick, I think, let me check.
- 1:25:51I think that's another thing. Fenway's always, an 11:00.
- 1:25:54A, yes, it is breakfast. If you want, if you want to eat
- 1:25:59breakfast, brunch time, get you a mimosa, get you a Bloody Mary.
- 1:26:08Get you a Benny get you something good.
- 1:26:12So who do you get? I got to lead this one, right?
- 1:26:16Um I'm gonna say this I think Louisville's going to take this
- 1:26:20game I think the addition of Brom definitely gets them a
- 1:26:23little bit more of a boost. I think losing fickle is a lot
- 1:26:27for Cincinnati. I think it's an energy.
- 1:26:30I think this is going to be an entertaining game.
- 1:26:32Just knowing both Styles. I think Malik Cunningham I think
- 1:26:35he's playing. I'm not seeing He has not opted
- 1:26:38out, has he? I haven't seen that he has, so
- 1:26:42I'm assuming he is until I hear otherwise, let me just make sure
- 1:26:45here. He's day-to-day got banged up a
- 1:26:48couple weeks ago so I don't see anything.
- 1:26:51I'll take Louisville in an entertaining game at Fenway
- 1:26:55Park. I'm going to take sense of here
- 1:27:01just to be contrarian. I think this is gonna be an
- 1:27:04interesting game. Regardless both teams have
- 1:27:07similar level talent and your argue Louisville probably has
- 1:27:10the best playmaker since he probably has the better top to
- 1:27:14bottom roster and turns of what they've been able to do so.
- 1:27:20I'll take Cynthia by hair there. Just to have something to text
- 1:27:24about that morning, right? Yep.
- 1:27:27All right. Well, let's go rejoin.
- 1:27:28Our Bloody Mary's are enjoying a bloody mary.
- 1:27:31Absolutely. All right, let's go to this one.
- 1:27:34I don't know how this bowl. Doesn't get more recognition.
- 1:27:37It's in freaking Vegas, but the Las Vegas Bowl Florida versus
- 1:27:43Oregon State. Oregon State, 14th, obviously
- 1:27:47pulling the huge upset over organ in the Civil War at the on
- 1:27:52Thanksgiving. The weekend who you got in this
- 1:27:54one, Brian. I'm taking Oregon State.
- 1:28:00I like the way they closed the season.
- 1:28:03I don't like what? Florida look, like down the
- 1:28:05stretch. I think this is Oregon State's.
- 1:28:08All right, Oregon State, I'm with you there.
- 1:28:11If for nothing else, with Anthony Richardson, declaring
- 1:28:14for the draft, which to me. He should not be declaring for
- 1:28:17the draft. I don't get that.
- 1:28:20I do not get that whatsoever. You're at least a year to early
- 1:28:23Sun way too much. I've know if there was not
- 1:28:27enough development this year in his game to go, and I also with
- 1:28:31Mi Elders, there's less reason to jump unless you're fully
- 1:28:37ready like Just, you know, a quarterback like him at Florida.
- 1:28:42Could rake in 250 300. Yeah.
- 1:28:47Easy maybe even higher lower in 36 figures, right?
- 1:28:54If that's not enough to to float, the boats and need to be
- 1:28:57floated until your game is where it needs to be to take the next
- 1:29:01step. Don't go man.
- 1:29:05This is this isn't two years ago when you know you make this type
- 1:29:08of decision, you're looking at your long term versus your short
- 1:29:12term within IL. It's a different kettle of fish.
- 1:29:18Who plays quarterback for Florida?
- 1:29:20I don't know. And I haven't researched it that
- 1:29:23far, but it's not Anthony Richardson.
- 1:29:26So in that is, right? And then Anthony Richardson, I'm
- 1:29:29not losing my, yeah. You're right.
- 1:29:30Okay, it's one of those days. I, um, let's go next out to the
- 1:29:36LA Bowl in Wazoo versus Fresno State.
- 1:29:39I'm taking this one. Real easy, Fresno State on a
- 1:29:42roll, beating Boise for the Mountain, West Title, I think
- 1:29:46they continue to do it. It in their backyard.
- 1:29:48Give me Fresno to keep it rolling and knockoff wazoo.
- 1:29:55Yeah, I'm right there with you. Fresno State and this one,
- 1:29:59probably not even whatever the spread is I'm taking.
- 1:30:03I'm taking Fresno in the points. Fresno's only laying three.
- 1:30:07So you got to be in the game were gone.
- 1:30:10It all right, if we give you Fresno, all right, the next
- 1:30:12one's in, is the ugliest. One of the day.
- 1:30:14It's the LendingTree Bowl. Five and seven Rice versus six
- 1:30:18and six Southern Miss, they happen.
- 1:30:23Yes, we know the six. And 16s happen.
- 1:30:26All the time. Rice shouldn't be here.
- 1:30:29Southern Miss Yeah, give me give me Southern Miss.
- 1:30:34Give me the farb Scandal. Let's do this.
- 1:30:38Let's see how many times. Will the far Scandal be
- 1:30:42discussed on this path, which is going to be on ESPN.
- 1:30:47I'd go 5 verily School lead with it.
- 1:30:52They're going to lead coming out of halftime.
- 1:30:54They're going to have some sort of expose somewhere during a
- 1:30:57good time out where they don't go to break.
- 1:31:02It'll be something absolutely. Alright, couple more here for
- 1:31:05Saturday and we're going to hit next week's games up until when
- 1:31:08we are alive. Next week, New Mexico Bowl SMU
- 1:31:12versus BYU who you taking in this one.
- 1:31:16Brian. Man.
- 1:31:22This is a tough and I think I'm a role as at SMU here though.
- 1:31:26Yeah, I'm with you on that SMU close the season, strong winning
- 1:31:30three of their last four. The only loss was to AAC winner
- 1:31:34Tulane and BYU's just been kind of up and down like all year,
- 1:31:40they played good some games, they play Bad some games so I'll
- 1:31:46go with the team. That's been a little bit more
- 1:31:47consistent I'm with you with SMU.
- 1:31:49I late Saturday night Fresco Bowl.
- 1:31:52Go and Fresco Frisco Texas, the runners-up of the Conference
- 1:31:56USA, in Mountain West Boise versus North Texas.
- 1:32:01I'm going to take Boise North Texas, kind of luckily to get in
- 1:32:06to see USA championship game. You know, you kind of look at
- 1:32:10what they did probably their best.
- 1:32:12When all year was probably, Yes, thing the best one all year,
- 1:32:23maybe Live tech, maybe Western Kentucky.
- 1:32:26Now I'm not saying a lot so give me Boise.
- 1:32:29Yeah, I'm riding the mean green here.
- 1:32:31All right, North Texas for Brian the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
- 1:32:39Brian Marshall versus UConn UConn, give up, give your own
- 1:32:46Colts head coach son, some credit went up there and Coach
- 1:32:49them boys to a six and six record versus one of our lead.
- 1:32:55Favorites last year for the Hokies job while we were sitting
- 1:32:58here for over a year ago, discussing that in Charles, huh
- 1:33:01food, you know big wins this year against Notre Dame.
- 1:33:04Big wins against App State Wait, but what are you thinking on
- 1:33:09this one? I think UConn has the better
- 1:33:13story I think Marshall has the better team Marshall takes it.
- 1:33:18I'll go with Marshall to I think Marshall also have likely a home
- 1:33:21field advantage down in Myrtle Beach.
- 1:33:24All righty. That's a 230 kick on Monday
- 1:33:28afternoon. Can they push those back?
- 1:33:31Can they all be 5:00 kicks? There's a little bit.
- 1:33:34It's like Tuesday, you got two games on Tuesday, you got
- 1:33:37Eastern Michigan, versus San Jose's.
- 1:33:39A330 kick at the pins at the potato.
- 1:33:41Bowl. I don't know much about either
- 1:33:45of these teams. I'll just go Eastern, Michigan.
- 1:33:53I'm gonna go Eastern Michigan to take.
- 1:33:56Your bowl. Is alright, it already.
- 1:33:59So then we got the Boca Raton Bowl.
- 1:34:03The question is, will this bowl end up in a fist fight?
- 1:34:06As it did a few years ago when Memphis and BYU played it, which
- 1:34:09was always interesting this year.
- 1:34:11It's even more interesting that it's Liberty versus Toledo.
- 1:34:17It's Liberty versus Toledo. Who are you taking in this game?
- 1:34:28Boca Raton. Gimme, I'm going to take the
- 1:34:32flames. You want to take the Flames?
- 1:34:35The Hugh freeze less frames. I think go down in flames.
- 1:34:40I think Hood Toledo. They won the MAC.
- 1:34:43Probably should be in a slightly better bowl with that.
- 1:34:45Is what it is Toledo to me. Had a really good year.
- 1:34:49We picked against them a couple weeks ago.
- 1:34:52You know, I think Toledo takes this one.
- 1:34:56All right, there is only a believe we got one more.
- 1:35:00We pull that up here on the 21st, so, a week from tonight
- 1:35:05and a week, Nolan's the New Orleans Bowl.
- 1:35:07But a week from tonight, we will be sitting here with talibans
- 1:35:14with Jeremy. Y'all, if y'all have not watched
- 1:35:19this episode watch it live, it's super entertaining because we
- 1:35:27got Jonathan tally spaces expert.
- 1:35:29Kurt bamas. Biggest hockey, fan, we got
- 1:35:36everybody knows, dr. Lord, Jeremy counts.
- 1:35:40Ha ha. We've, we've done this.
- 1:35:46We've had Jeremy on the last two years.
- 1:35:47We had tally on with Jeremy last year.
- 1:35:50I feel like this is going to be our annual state of the program
- 1:35:56yearly episode where we bring these two on.
- 1:35:59Absolutely and just we're going to cut up, we're going.
- 1:36:03We're going to talk a little kind of close out early Signing
- 1:36:06Day and then we're going to, we're going, we're going to cut
- 1:36:09up and talk to program and hit every corner of what happened
- 1:36:13this season. What's happened with the class?
- 1:36:15What we need to do between now? And when spring practice starts
- 1:36:20up kind of touch on a little bit of everything, is we kind of
- 1:36:24roll into the new year abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 1:36:28So next, Wednesday, Wednesday not Tuesday.
- 1:36:33I was going to ask Brian. If you can do it Thursday but
- 1:36:36you know I got a guy accommodate.
- 1:36:38Well I'm see Thursday, I will be in South Boston.
- 1:36:42And if you remember last year, the internet connectivity issues
- 1:36:46I was having this oh I'd prefer to be able to do it while I'm
- 1:36:53still here because it we're going to let relying upon South
- 1:36:56Boston, internet connections at all.
- 1:37:00I'm just more upset. I told you, I'm about to take it
- 1:37:01easy because I got to work the next day.
- 1:37:03I can't do it. I did what I did two years ago
- 1:37:06when I was off. That was all on.
- 1:37:10All three of us were hammered that 10-man.
- 1:37:13Now that little Hammer. Yeah, full hammered and all of
- 1:37:16us are feeling good and Jeremy was feeling real good last year.
- 1:37:19So yes, he was Jeremy's promise. He's going to paste this year.
- 1:37:23We'll see how that goes. These processes I'm just going
- 1:37:28to tell it just eat a full meal. Man, you see the full name?
- 1:37:31All right. One more game to pick.
- 1:37:33It'll probably be back here on the television screen as we are
- 1:37:38talking to Jeremy and Hali next week.
- 1:37:40And that's Western Kentucky versus South Alabama.
- 1:37:44In the New Orleans Bowl South Alabama, 10 and to Western
- 1:37:48Kentucky Aiden for so to pretty good G5 teams going at it here,
- 1:37:53we think on this one Braun even though we won't be really well,
- 1:37:56you'll be watching, it'll probably be right there for you
- 1:37:58but little bit. Above me while I'm throwing back
- 1:38:02some shots and crushing some beers while we talk state of the
- 1:38:06program. But I'm going to take Western
- 1:38:08Kentucky here. All right, good deal.
- 1:38:12I'm gonna go opposite of you for the last pick.
- 1:38:14I'm going to go, south Alabama, South Alabama tending to their
- 1:38:18only losses this year were to Troy by four and they lost.
- 1:38:23If you remember the UCLA game early in the year where you
- 1:38:25Shelly pulled a freaking miracle and scored a touchdown with,
- 1:38:31like I think it was like two or a field goal, two seconds left,
- 1:38:35like literal Miracle. So give me South Alabama.
- 1:38:39All right, other than the Ryan, In Walters news, which came out
- 1:38:42of nowhere because I guess I had looked at my phone close enough
- 1:38:46in the last few hours here. What else you got?
- 1:38:49Run? That's all we got man.
- 1:38:51All right, ready to close whenever you are.
