- 0:37The fight always starts small.
- 0:39A purchase, a number, that raised eyebrow, and somehow you end up in the same argument you've had a hundred times.
- 0:48Money is one of the top things couples fight about, but the fight is almost never about money.
- 0:55Today let's talk about what it's actually about, because the real issue actually surprises people.
- 1:02And once you see it and you see that peace is possible, you can do something about it.
- 1:08So stay with me and let's get you two back on the same team together.
- 1:22Hello and welcome to Financially Confident Christian.
- 1:24I'm Ralph Estep Jr.
- 1:26And I just want to thank you for taking a little time to spend with me today.
- 1:30I'm your guide as we work to break that cycle of financial shame and find confidence.
- 1:35And today we're going to try to break a cycle that I see so many people struggle with, and that's getting on the same page on money with your partner.
- 1:45We got a listener question who's married, and they're living in this constant state of tension.
- 1:52What they actually say is the same fight on repeat.
- 1:55But they want, they love each other, they want unity, and they don't want conflict.
- 2:00But she's feeling exhausted and she's feeling lonely.
- 2:04Now maybe you've got a question just like this or something else that you want to talk about with your finances.
- 2:09I would love to hear from you.
- 2:11The easiest way to get in touch with us is go to financiallyconfidentchristian.com/question We'll put a link in the show notes, but that's at financiallyconfidentconfidentchristian.com/question Let's get right to today's listener question.
- 2:27Now, I'm going to start with the subject line because this one popped out of me.
- 2:30It said this, my husband and I can't stop fighting about money help in all caps.
- 2:36So we got to help this person.
- 2:38This is what they wrote.
- 2:38Hi, Ralph.
- 2:39My husband and I love each other.
- 2:41I'm going to pause for a second.
- 2:43That's actually a good thing, but let me continue.
- 2:46But money is tearing at us.
- 2:48He's a spender and I'm a saver.
- 2:51And it feels like every few weeks we're back in the same fight.
- 2:55It's like that boxing match.
- 2:56It never ends.
- 2:57But let me get back to their question.
- 2:59He buys something.
- 3:00I get anxious.
- 3:01He feels controlled.
- 3:02I feel ignored.
- 3:04And round and round we go.
- 3:06We've been married for 11 years and this is the one thing we've never figured out.
- 3:12It's gotten to where I almost dread looking at the bank account because I know it'll start something.
- 3:17Neither of us is being malicious.
- 3:19We just see money completely differently.
- 3:22I don't even know where to start a conversation about it that doesn't turn into an argument.
- 3:27How do couples actually get on the same page with money?
- 3:30Is there hope for two people who are just wired so differently?
- 3:34Thank you, Ralph.
- 3:35Well, thank you for sending in your question.
- 3:38I've said this on the show before.
- 3:39I truly believe that money is the breaker of more relationships than any other issue.
- 3:47But I want to say something bold here, because you need to hear this.
- 3:50It's actually not about money, and that surprises a lot of people.
- 3:55It's the fear underneath of it.
- 3:58So we got to reinforce them.
- 4:00I love the fact that you said you love each other, which means you're a team.
- 4:02You're not enemies.
- 4:04But we got to figure out how to balance this team and give you a path back to unity.
- 4:10So the first step is to realize you're not fighting each other.
- 4:13So many people think it's a battle of him versus me.
- 4:17I want this.
- 4:17I want this.
- 4:19I'm a saver, he's a spender.
- 4:21That's not where we need to start.
- 4:22You got to recognize that both of you are on the same team, and you're fighting a problem.
- 4:28And that problem usually is two things.
- 4:32It's the problem of freedom, and it's the problem of security.
- 4:37It's not an attack when you are feeling like you're not getting heard and you're not trying to control the other people.
- 4:44So the first thing you got to do is drop that opponent's lens.
- 4:48You guys are teammates.
- 4:50You're not adversaries of each other.
- 4:51You're not playing some match where somebody's got to win.
- 4:55It's not that you're against each other.
- 4:58It's the two of you against the problem.
- 5:00So how do we get to a point?
- 5:02Well, we got to start by finding the fear underneath the fight.
- 5:04Like I said at the beginning, this is not about money.
- 5:09It's about fear.
- 5:11There's a deeper fear underneath of most of these things.
- 5:15Now, you mentioned you're a saver.
- 5:17If I had to guess, you, fear insecurity.
- 5:21You may have come from a place where you were like, Ralph, we were always struggling.
- 5:26Very, very common.
- 5:28You don't want to live in that fear anymore.
- 5:30You want that security.
- 5:32But at the same time, you got to recognize that the spender may came from a place where there was a lot of restriction, and the fear for them is that restriction.
- 5:41So if you really want to break this, you got to ask each other a very sincere and honest question.
- 5:48What are you afraid of?
- 5:50Look at your partner and say, what are you afraid of?
- 5:52Now listen, I'm going to talk a little bit about how you do it, because it's not saying in the middle of an argument, say, what are you afraid of?
- 5:56You're going to get yourself in trouble.
- 5:59But you got to name the fear.
- 6:02Because once you name the fear, the symptom goes away.
- 6:04You're not arguing out a purchase.
- 6:07You're arguing about a fear neither of you has named.
- 6:11Now, how do you effectively do this?
- 6:13One of the things that I encourage couples.
- 6:15I've been doing this for 30 years.
- 6:16I work with a lot of people.
- 6:17Sometimes people come in and I'll say, hold on, let me take off my accountant hat and let me put on my counselor hat, because I wear that a lot.
- 6:24But one of the things you can do right away is have a regular money meeting.
- 6:29Yes, put it on the calendar.
- 6:31Now, it needs to be calm.
- 6:32Not when you're having a heat of a purchase, like when your husband comes home and says, guess what?
- 6:36I just bought a brand new tv.
- 6:38Not a good time to have a meeting, but a regular money date.
- 6:42Put it on the counter, make it short, maybe have a coffee together, and you decide on what those fears are.
- 6:49You decide on a plan before that tension hits.
- 6:53Because if you can have that one calm meeting, it's going to break down a dozen heated debates.
- 7:00Talk about money on a calm Tuesday.
- 7:03Not in the heat of the moment, but in order to break these fears and to really work together.
- 7:08You said, I've been trying to do this for 11 years.
- 7:10You got to look about building a shared plan with room for both of you.
- 7:15One of the things that I've been married 26 years.
- 7:17The thing I will tell you, successful marriages understand a very big word called compromise.
- 7:24You both have legitimate fears, you both have legitimate desires.
- 7:30But you got to build something together.
- 7:32You've never, you never built these for.
- 7:33You can't impose your fears on the other person just as they can impose theirs on yours.
- 7:39If you're the saver, you want to be the saver.
- 7:42You got to fund that security.
- 7:44But at the same time, if you're the spender, you got to feel like you have some fun money with no questions asked.
- 7:51You got to honor both of those things.
- 7:53When you don't honor those things, you build up resentment, and resentment drains that emotional bank account between the two of you.
- 8:01So you've got to design a plan around those differences.
- 8:05In the end, a good plan gives the saver peace and the spender freedom on purpose.
- 8:11So how do you do that?
- 8:12Well, one of the things you can do is set shared goals that pull you together.
- 8:17One of the things when I counsel couples, I say to them, hey, what could we do today?
- 8:21What are the plans?
- 8:22What are the things you dream about?
- 8:24Owning a home, maybe a vacation home, maybe trying to travel, spending time with your grandchildren.
- 8:31That shared dream can unite you together.
- 8:34Like I said, a trip, a home, being debt free.
- 8:37And if you think about getting in a boat, right, let's say you had oars.
- 8:41Well, if you get together, you're rowing in the same direction, you're going to move a lot more efficiently.
- 8:48You got to move away from your, to my and our future because if you aim together, those fights fade away because you have a set thing.
- 8:59Here's what we're aiming for.
- 9:01What I have found is couples who aim at the same dream, stop fighting over the same dollar.
- 9:07It's really that simple.
- 9:09I want to go a little deeper though, because you said something that really encouraged me today.
- 9:13You said you'd love each other, but the money is tearing at you.
- 9:17And I want you to hold on to that first part because it's the foundation of everything else is built on.
- 9:23The love is still there.
- 9:25I was talking to somebody the other day and we had a very frank discussion.
- 9:28They said, ralph, do you think if we, if we don't love each other, that you can make this work together?
- 9:32And honestly, I don't think you can.
- 9:35And I know that might sound harsh, but if you love each other, if you truly love each other, I'm convinced that there is something you can work to fix this together.
- 9:45I think it's going to be a work thing and it's going to be partly faith too.
- 9:49Here's what our faith doesn't promise us.
- 9:51It doesn't promise you're suddenly going to think alike.
- 9:53I can't tell you that there's some magic potion that all of a sudden you're going to have a money making this week and you're going to hug each other and say, oh, we're both on the same page.
- 10:01It doesn't work like that.
- 10:03It's going to be a time of understanding each other's fears and working through questions.
- 10:09It doesn't promise that spender is going to become a saver.
- 10:12You're not going to convince your husband to be a saver, just as he's not going to convince you to be a spender.
- 10:18And it doesn't promise that every conversation goes smoothly.
- 10:21You are going to have bumps in the road.
- 10:24But here's what faith does promise us.
- 10:27And we're going to talk about a scripture that says two people walking together in agreement are far stronger than one or either one working alone.
- 10:36It says in the scripture, can two walk together?
- 10:38Unless they've agreed, of course.
- 10:39Think about a cord.
- 10:41The strongest cord have multiple strands.
- 10:45The two of you of two strands is a stronger cord.
- 10:48That's a difference.
- 10:49That's a strength.
- 10:51And the Lord will teach you to walk in step together.
- 10:55So come back to the same team.
- 10:57Seek agreement.
- 10:58It's not about who wins and who loses.
- 11:00The goal was never to win the argument, it was to win as one.
- 11:05That one common unity in flesh.
- 11:09Friends, you're not incompatible.
- 11:11You just need to find balance.
- 11:14The love is there, the hard part is done.
- 11:17You just need to build some skills that you can learn together.
- 11:20So here's my win for today.
- 11:22I want you to schedule that first money date.
- 11:25Be intentional about it.
- 11:26Not stress, not some post purchase.
- 11:28Well, I can't believe you bought this.
- 11:30Don't come to it with an agenda.
- 11:32Come to it with this agenda.
- 11:33I'm going to listen and I'm not going to blame you.
- 11:37Start off by saying, hey, what are your fears about money?
- 11:40Not complaints, not I can't believe you did this.
- 11:43What are your fears?
- 11:45Just one conversation.
- 11:47Not try to rehash 11 years of marriage together.
- 11:50Just start with one calm talk where you talk about your fears and honestly spend more time listening than talking.
- 11:59Which leads us Today's Bible verse comes from the book of Amos.
- 12:02This isn't one we quote most of the time, But Amos chapter 3, verse 3 says, can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?
- 12:10And I love this Bible verse because you think about it, if you're going to walk with somebody and your partner says I'm going this way and you're saying I'm going this way, guess what?
- 12:18You're not walking together.
- 12:20Your finances in a marriage need to be the same way.
- 12:24Money sets a big direction and if you are on different parts of the money, you're going to be going in different directions.
- 12:30You can't go on a journey until you agree to some pace that goes where we're going.
- 12:35It doesn't mean you're the same, it just means you have an agreement.
- 12:39And when you have that agreement, God's going to honor that and you'll live that verse out loud.
- 12:45How about we pray right now together?
- 12:47Heavenly Father, I bring before You, a husband and a wife who love each other and you've given them that love, Lord, but they keep colliding over money.
- 12:55They're tired of the same fight and that longing for peace in their relationship, Lord, I just ask you right now to draw them back together, Lord.
- 13:04Help them to see each other as teammates, not opponents.
- 13:06Not that one needs to win and one needs to lose.
- 13:09Hear the fear beneath their words, Lord and bring to them calmness and kindness and help them to both be real active listeners.
- 13:18Help them to build and unite around a shared plan, Lord and remind them that that cord swarmed is not easily broken.
- 13:28And we ask this in Jesus name.
- 13:31Amen.
- 13:33Friend, I know you came in here with dread, but I hope today I've given you a little way to think about the teamwork that can come out of this.
- 13:41You were wired differently and that's okay.
- 13:45But you're never been enemies.
- 13:47You just need to find the balance.
- 13:49So here's my takeaways today for both of you.
- 13:52Work together.
- 13:53It's your fight against the problem, not your fight against each other.
- 13:58Find that fear underneath.
- 14:00Plan those calm money meetings, not heated discussions.
- 14:03Build that plan.
- 14:05Visionize that future.
- 14:07Find that security.
- 14:08Find that freedom.
- 14:09Find those shared goals in that same dream.
- 14:12And I'm telling you this can actually work.
- 14:14I've seen people fix this after years, years of marriages and I know you can do it too.
- 14:21And I want to leave you with one more thing.
- 14:22If you've been battling something like this or some other financial question, I would love to have your answer on or your question on the show.
